I called dell as the system is only 4 months old, and i have warranty, however they informed me that for software related issues they would charge 264.00!!!

You could say that I'm rethinking my purchase choice.

Hi all,

Need some extra help here. I attempted to get the debugging tools to read the minidump files post-mortem, but can only get into safe mode, which doesn't help me. I've attached the zip of the output from the jcgriff2 app.

I'm not positive, but it may be related to an attempt to install Spanish & Japanese optional language packs to Windows 7 Ultimate installation alongside a recommended update.

Initially, it crashed during start up at the 'configuring windows' screen at 15% into it. Two system restores later to take me back two updates, and now it returns to the 'configuring windows' screen on startup and crashes at 0%. Not sure if additional system restores will do much good.

Thanks,

- Matt

Hi,

I have an Acer netbook running windows 7 starter...for several days each time I close the laptop there are updates that attempt to install but fails to do so for some reason...there are also issues of configuration, seemingly every time I start the laptop.

I have read the uploader tool page but before going through this process would like to ask why the laptop fails to update ? ...I recently got rid of any microsoft office programs...does this have anything to do with the failure to update ?

below are the updates that have failed several times ... sorry but the image is very small !

A:Windows 7 update failures and configuration issues.

It`s a couple of days since I posted the above but the updating failure continues...I`ve no idea if the failure is caused by this laptop not in fact having the required internal programs to ensure the updates are accepted...something is obviously not right.

edit ti add...maybe the laptop just doesn`t need these updates...?

I have a Samsung laptop a few years old - Core i7, 2TB HDD, 8gb Memory. It was supplied with Windows 7 and I have the W7 installation dvd that came with it.

Over the years I have booted from this DVD and re-installed a fresh copy of W7 several times with no problems whatsoever.

A few months ago I succumbed and upgraded to Windows 10 - no problems - it all ran fine.

I wanted to go back to W7 so I deleted all partitions on the HDD, booted from the W7 DVD as usual. Selected country:UK and created a new partition on the HDD (whole of the HDD). Files were copied to the HDD in the usual manner, Windows 7 installed up to 100%, then onto features etc. The installation went with no problems up to the fourth step - installing updates. I though it was a few seconds away from completion and re-boot. However, I then got the message 'Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration'.

Repeated several times, deleting and re-creating partition on the disk but the same happened.

In the end, I installed Windows 10 on the HDD by booting from a USB stick with W10 on and it installed no problems.

Anyone got any idea what it going on? It looks like my install of W10 has changed the disk somehow so W7 cannot ever be installed again on the disk.

Installation cannot proceed."I tried to install Windows 7 in a new partition but the process reaches 27% this time and stops with same error.I've reformatted my hard disks completely and installation process reaches 99% then stops with same error.I checked BIOS settings and found only DVD and HDD listed (no third option).the Microsoft suggestion about the registry tweaking did not apply for me (and I tried to install a fresh copy from scratch).I'm using 2 HDD in RAID0 configuration and works OK with Windows Vista, I did load the drivers to Windows 7 during installation but still getting same problem, any suggestion???

Simple solution found for Dual Boot errors!

Here is an update. Since no one else has seemed to find a solution I actually managed to find my own. Just to recap you on what had happened to me, I was trying to dual boot Windows 7 x64 with Windows Vista Ultimate x64. Somewhere in my use with Vista my BCD was corrupt/deleted and caused this error to appear. (Windowscould not update your computer's boot configuration.) After searching my computer I found the registry settings were correct, and file access to the folder that contained the BCD was correct, However my BCD was corrupt/missing and so I was unable to finish the installation and get my computer to dual boot. I found this out by typing bcdedit.exe in command with admin access and it gave me the warning "BCDedit.exe could not be run. BCD is either corrupt or missing".

In order to fix this it was quite simple. I had to use the original installation disc for vistato repair my computer's boot files. Unfortunately I didnt have an install disc that would work with vista since I purchased mine before SP1 came out, so in order to repair it I had to create a slipstream disc with the SP1 updates added to it. after repairing I instantly was able to see both Windows 7 and Windows Vista in my boot manager when I restarted my computer. I easily fixed and finished installation with out a hitch, and I'm now staring at internet explorer inside of Windows 7 typing this message. I hope this will help anyone else ou... Read more

So yesterday automatic Windows update installed IE10, today I noticed that links in certain applications open in IE10 instead of my configured default browser, which every link from this or any other application used to open in before that update and the reboot that followed the update.
I checked the Default Programs section in the system control panel, expecting maybe Microsoft wanted to get themselves in any more trouble with the EU and changing the default to IE. This was not the case however, all the associations were still pointing to the configured default browser, I noticed however I could not uncheck the defaults already set.
So despite the obvious configuration being correct, links would still open in IE10 even after yet another reboot.
I went ahead and checked the registry associations, and found that http(s) protocol as well as htm(l) filetypes were associated with Internet Explorer with various EditFlags set (presumably to prevent changing them through the user interface, or to ignore the user interface settings).

Seriously Microsoft? Don't you have enough trouble yet?

Also, if any of you thing there's a better software for receiving faxes in my computer instead of to the printer, please give me your recommendations. I know that my Windows fax system sometimes does to picki up the fax calls.

A:Problem With Windows Fax Configuration

Do you have a V92 Voice / Fax modem?
Is it connected to a phone line?
Personally, I like having the HP all in one answer incomming faxes and print them out. Before getting one of these I tried several (paid and free) fax software packages. I liked one called Communicate2000 best.
They have a newer version now

It is a full communications manager meant to integrate email, fax, cellphone etc managment with your computer

For PC access it is best to use one of those services which gives you a fax number and emails you the fax.(Efax?)
I can't say I ever found a free fax software I liked.

Current Setup:I have a Windows 7 Ultimate laptop. Recently, I was working for a client - where the only way to get Net access was to set up a second (corporate) domain that fitted their corporate policies and a user profile for use when at work. To enable it, their corp IT changed my computer name to fit their naming convention and set me up with two domains and users. I log in to these profiles as corporatedomain\corp_user when at work and as machine_name\my_original_user_id.

Removing corporate profile and possibly returning to my original machine name: My assignment is done, and I want my machine back (from the messed up configuration and policies). How do I delete the corporate domain/profile and the user they created? Ideally (though less importantly, I'd want to change my machine name back to the original name as well.

Possible Virus Infection: I think I might have a virus infection on the machine. They had cornficker.B worm on their network, and it is possible my machine got infected. Windows defender detects it, but then does not seem to find it when it tries to clean. This is causing my system to not shutdown properly. Since my suspicion is that it might be associated with their profile - I want to first drop the corporate domain, profile and policies before tacking it - unless someone has a better advice.

Sorry if I am asking too complicated/long question, but I desperately need help on how to proceed.

A:Solved: Windows 7 configuration and virus problem...

I searched the web to find how to delete the profile, user and change computer name, and went ahead with it - after backing up the data. The steps were: Computer -> Advanced system settings -> User Profiles -> Select profile and click delete. With that, the first question I asked was resolved.

I am running some tests on the virus infection issue, and will open a new thread if needed in the right forum. Am closing this thread as a result.

This is a bit complicated! Prior to installing Windows 8 my computer went through the following "Evolutionary steps"

1. New motherboard fitted
2. Windows XP installed (baseline full install)
3. Windows 7 upgrade installed on a new disk drive, which then became drive C: - I created a dual boot system
it was also possible to boot Windows XP from what then became drive D:
4. Installed Windows 8 upgrade onto drive C: (also created a bootable USB dive with Windows 8 upgrade on it)
5. After installation, deleted the Windows.Old (Windows 7) because was running out of disk space
6. Deleted all files off the Windows XP Drive C:

In terms of hardware ID's the Windows 8 drive C: is hardware ID 0
The Windows XP disk drive D: is hardware ID 2

Now I am trying to "reclaim" the old Windows XP drive and reformat it for general use, I don't want to use it as a system disk.
The system will not let me!! Here is the status from DISKPART:

Hi all,

Here's what's happened...

i have Windows 7 on a 500GB SATA hd running fine.

Yesterday I decided to install Windows XP Pro SP3 on a spare 160GB SATA HDD which I have, and I did this via the notebook upgrade bay (2nd HDD caddy) where the DVD drive would be. I left my 500GB internal (Windows 7) HDD in the computer and during the XP setup DVD specified for it to install on the 160GB HDD.

The problem is every time I boot my computer, it tries to boot XP.. even if i change the boot sequence or try to manually boot the internal HDD from the boot menu...

i tried to remove the 160GB XP hard drive hoping that this would leave the computer to boot the 500GB Windows 7 x64 OS... But instead i get this message on the screen..

"Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.
Please check the documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information."

Can anyone give me any advice on what I need to do to be able to boot properly into my Windows 7 HDD again?

I have Hirens BootCD at my disposal and have managed to boot into Windows 7 fine using the option presented on the first screen. After a reboot the message above returns...

Many thanks in advance,

I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to fix my computer. The problem started today and goes as follows: Whenever I try to start my machine up, it gives me the message "windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem". I have tried formatting, reformatting, and doing that some more. I have tried using the command chkdsk /r in the XP recoverty console. I don't know exactly what's up with my disk. I believe I cought some sort of virus or something that modified my hd perhaps. But, anyways, I can't even install XP (Home or Professional) because after it finishes formatting and copying the necessary files to the HD, it reboots and just goes back to this same error. I am out of idea so please ANYONE'S help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

Try downloading the diagnostic software provided by the manufacturer of the drive - for example, Seagate provide SeaTools and Maxtor provide PowerMax - I know others do the same.

I am running windows 7 Ultimate (64Bit) using your latest device driver from your Web Site R2.68 download which shows up as the Rev 6.0.1.6602 driver. I have also tried using the original driver supplied by HP Rev. 6.0.1.5190 and both have the problems listed below.

Problem: I can only enable the 2-channel audio device. I cannot configure the speaker arrangement as five speakers on the Reltek HD Manager Display control panel. In addition the configure button is grayed out on the windows "Sound" Display Control Panel.

The displays shows only two channels of audio enabled. But the Default ConfigurationButton is Grayed out.

The Realtek HD Manager Display recognizes and shows that I am using an SPDIF Digital Coax Connection. I have a Digital Output Tab on that display but I do not have a Speakers Tab or a Microphone Tab displayed.

What do I have to do to configure the speakers? Is it a register setting that is not being properly set up? What are the registry keys for this device?

Thank you for your help!

a few months ago i let my sister borrow my laptop. when i got it back the next day i turned it on and it started up as usual but before it went to the desk-top it came up with-

configuring updates: stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete
please do not turn off your computer

this is nothing new but it stays on 0% for 1/2 minutes then restarts, goes back to this page and does the same again, round and round in a loop.

i left it running like this for a couple of days to see if anything happened but still the same

does anyone know how to fix this?

A:update configuration HELP

Possibly, your sister powered down the laptop during updates. Try system restore from recovery console:If you have Windows XP CD... (if you don't have Windows CD, scroll down)1. Boot from the CD.2. When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts. Select the repair or recover option by pressing R:3. You'll find yourself at this screen:4. Once you are at the Recovery Console you will be given at least one choice of Windows installations. Normally the choice you want is the number 1 choice. Click the number 1 key at the "top" of the keyboard and click enter.NOTE: at this point your numbers to the right of your keyboard are turned off. If you insist on using these keys for your numbers remember to hit the Numbers Lock key before clicking a number over there or your computer will automatically reboot and you will have to wait through the previous steps to get back to the console. 5. You will be given a message asking for the administrator password. Unless someone or something has messed with your computer there is no password so you just click the Enter key. 6. This will bring you to a prompt that says: C:\WINDOWS>7. Type: cd \ Press EnterNote: between "cd" and "\" there should be a "blank space" otherwise the command won't work8. The prompt should now say:C:\>9. Type: cd system~1\_resto~1Press Enter.===============================================================================Note: If it gives... Read more

I first had a dial up modem. I got frustrated with that, so I got DSL. I got a virus, so I purchased Norton Internet Security package with firewall, etc. via download. When I attempted to use the Live Update feature, I got this message:

Initializing...
Connecting to liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com...
Unable to connect to host
LiveUpdate could not connect to your Internet Service Provider. Verify
your dial-up information is correct.
LiveUpdate session is complete.

I then deleted the dial-up configuration thinking that it would then recognize the DSL connection. Not so! I'm getting the same message. Any suggestions as to how I can get the Live Update feature to work for me? (Windows XP)

Hi PJ Staley,

Please do this. Click here to download Hijack This. Run Hijack this.
Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

*Note: When you download Hijack This Do Not download it to a temp folder or to the desktop. Create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This and put it in that folder.

MS about this error
The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista and Windows 7

Restore system:
System Restore - Undo

Hey guys, I had an Updating issue recently and am still not clear on the best settings for the Update Settings?

I just installed a bunch of Optional and Recommended Updates, but was sure to exclude the Bad Guys for the W10 Upgrade stuff: KB3035583 and KB2952664

So I still don't know if this is the best or not. I was not accepting Optional and Recommended before, but since having this Update issue though I would change my actions.

This is my current setting:
1. ?Check for Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them? Is this good, or should I got with checking for them Manually.

Now wondering what this setting should be:
2. ?Give me Recommended Updates the same way I receive Important Updates?

Can someone shed some light on this for me? Thanks, Nasty7

Help!
Had an incomplete install of a program...computer otherwise working fine...did a system restore to try to go back to preinstall...in the system restore shutdown and restart, now hung up in a update configuation loop that is in third step up to 99% that shuts down only to do the same thing over and over again. So my system never gets to the mainscreen acknowledging system was restored.
I tried F8 going to safe mode, but configuation step 3 takes over again, goes to 99% and shuts down to restart.
I tried the vista 64 sp1 disc...cannot acccess another restore point since it says the system is already in restore mode....just never gets there with the endless 3rd step update configuration loop.
The disc also does not offer the repair/update mode as an option...only full install.
I do have norton ghost 14 on the system...so there is a complete backup file on another internal drive...but no way to get to it to initiate a recovery.
VERY FRUSTRATING!!!
Could time remedy the situation...letting the computer lay idle for a few days...then try to boot up??? I've heard that this on occaision could work with Vista.
Any other thoughts???
Thanks!

BTW, computer is a hp desktop with Vista Ultimate 64 sp1, 4 gb ram, and intel dual core processor, with a bunch of bells and whistles.

Had this problem on 2 machines; I read and tried all the fixes suggested on the internet; about a dozen of them over and over again.
Problem is the HARDDRIVE!
I had a fresh install and had the problem with existing harddrive.
Also had problem on an up and running computer about 4 months old; just never got around to fixing it.
I tried all the fixes on the new one to no luck. I know some windows setup settings look for certain hardware for some setup processes so I tried an old drive I have kicking around. I Cloned the new drive onto it and ran the computer and then SP1 and all worked. I cloned back to the new drive and about 187 updates have now installed. It's working perfectly.
I had the same problem on the second computer and cloned it onto a different drive and then to an SSD also; it worked on both drives; also had 187 updates install.
Even after reinstalling the OS twice and immediately trying the SP1 it still didn't work until I cloned to the older harddrives.
Finally!!

I've check on a few forums and someone always says to restore the default value for the UpperFilters registry entry and then restart computer. In the steps that follow, it says to modify UpperFilters and to type PartMgr and click ok. This seems to work for some people, I however already had the PartMgr value on there. I do not have a Windows Update problem, but I do have a Microsoft Update problem. The latter is a tool to check for updates for Microsoft products other than Windows.

I finally installed Office 2016 Professional X64 this week and I should be able to configure Windows Update to check for updates for it, but I can't, as the link at the bottom of "Windows Update" home page ("Get updates for other Microsoft products. Find out more") to do so, points to this meaningless MS web page as shown on right side of image, below:
Microsoft Windows Update

Currently, system is set to receive updates for Windows only, and doesn't offer an option to configure it for other Microsoft product updates.

Anyone have a resolution for this, as it's essential to be able to update this product.

I've Office 2010 Professional installed on my other Win 7 Ultimate laptop, and updates for it have never been a problem. It's set to receive updates for Windows and other Microsoft products, unlike this machine.

This machine is less than a year old, but I chose to "downgrade" the OS from Win 8.1 Pro to Win 7 Pro when purchased. Could that be the issue here?

This works quite well, especially the last paragraph:

A:Windows 7 Update update kb2762895 problem.

Have you tried the download again it's possible it could have corrupted. You don't say what system you have, make model etc. or what security programs you have. Is everything up to date with everything and have you run scans to make sure you've not got any unwanted things running.

Automatic updates said I needed this update but it failed to update more than once. So, I went to Microsoft's website to download it from there to see if that made a difference. When trying to install I get the message "This update is not applicable to your computer". I had no error messages. I have Windows 7 Service Pack 1 64 bit and I.E. 11 so I don't know what to make of this. On the face of it the update ought to apply to my computer but something clearly isn't right. All the other automatic updates installed correctly. Does anybody know what's likely to be happening here please?

The two updates I received today according to the add or remove programs list are:
Hotfix for windows xp (KB976098-v2)
Update for windows xp (KB973687)

Now Windows is asking for a restart, problem is I think it installed SP3 as that was the latest update I saw when I opened the Windows update icon in the task bar a little while ago.
I may update to SP3 at some point, but I'm not ready for the hasle at the moment so is the windows update code number for SP3 the same as the one I mentioned above in the add or remove programs list? And should I restart my pc before uninstalling SP3 or could I uninstall it now without even restarting.

I just got an ASUS Eee 1005HA netbook a couple of months ago. I installed Windows 7 and everything was going great until today.

I can still see and connect to my wireless network but I am not getting any internet access and I keep getting the little yellow triangle warning on the network connection icon. When I troubleshoot it says "Wireless Network Connection" doesn't have valid IP configuration. I spent several hours on here and other sites trying to fix this, but nothing has worked thus far. I have tried resetting my IP configuration multiple times, installing the updated wireless drivers off the Asus sight, and resetting my network adapters several times.

I can't really access the router settings because I am at college right now and use the college's wireless internet. I have been using the internet just fine on my netbook until just today, and I really can't imagine what happened. It just all of a sudden stopped working and I can't figure out how to fix it. I think in trying to fix the issue I might have messed things up even more. Help?

I believe this is caused by some software I installed for my printer so I uninstalled the printer
All this and I still have the problems.

I just checked the event viewer and it shows this attached screenshot.
What the h*ll is this? Need help on this. MSC says resetting IE setting will probably fix the problem but Idont want to do that. Will someone help me to find some other way to fix the probem.

Hello.

Hope someone can assist me with the issue I am having in windows 10 Pro.

A few days ago my system Automatically updated to Windows Pro v1511 (OS Build 10586.14)... all went well and seemed to be OK.

Now to my Problem...

When I now go to check for updates it does its checking for updates thing then installs any available update but once it has completed this and I click on "Advanced Options/View Update History" in that all I get is a blank page and all it says is no updates have been installed yet....

But I know that it has installed windows defender updates? because I have seen it download them and complete the updates?

I have tried the reset (windows update .bat) file floating around on the forum, but all that does is clear everything and still no updates are showing in the list when I go to "Advanced Options/View Update History"...

Can anyone please help me get that all back to normal....

This has only been an issue since this update to Windows Pro v1511 (OS Build 10586.14)..

How do I know that the updates in Defender or anything else for that matter are actually installing.. seeing that they are not being listed in the "View Update History" list...

Is anyone else having this issue and if so any assistance on how to fix this will be appreciated...

cheers

I need to set up three user accounts on two computers the accounts on each computer is going to be monitored.
Each user will be assigned access for certain folder or files and certain applications, like internet explorer.
And all usb ports and dvd drive will be blocked. Only the admin will be allow to have full access.

So i need to do something that allow ( managers) to monitor employees activity on the system during working hours.

On one pc is windows xp pro on the other os windows 7 home premium.

Any idea how i can acomplish this task?

I.was thinking of group policy on both computers but on home premium there is not group policy.

Also the users will be using almost all the same programs and files just the with different information.

Thank you in advance.

But for Windows 7 Home Premium you will not have the
Local Security Policy so you may need to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro for that.

This is easier to control with a server like Windows Server 2003 or 2008.

Alright, I have been working at this for an eternity. I am connected to the net through a wired\wireless linksys router. My wireless connected PC is working as I am writing on this forum with it, it is a laptop that uses XP.

My problem is with my main PC connected by wire to the same router. That machine uses Vista 64bits. Vista tells me is the problem is

''There may be a problem with your Domain Name Server (DNS) configuration''

Now I've been trying to fix this stupid problem for ages. 've tried flushing my DNS, My TCP\IP is all set to automatically find the DNS. I've tried various CMD solutions I've found on the net, nothing's resolved my problem. I would love for any help provided, thank you in advance.

So, suddenly my internet stopped working (im using lan adapters you put in the socket). I ****ed up I think, I was dicking around and I manually changed the ip, subnetmasker and the default gateway to what my laptop has. I copied the dns server adres too, and I made an adres up for the alternative dns server. This obviously didnt do jack ****

So I changed the properties back to "automatically assign ip adres" and I went into cmd, I typed "ipconfig/all". It now shows NO default gateway, and it shows the ip that I copied from my laptop, the dns servers show: fec0:0:0:ffff: : 1%1
Fec0:0:0:ffff: :2%1
Fec0:0:0:ffff: :3%1
Now, I would realy like some help here, since im not a computer expert (as you probably could tell). Ask me what you need to know!

Domain Name Server Configuration
When I connect to the Internet, I can stay connected for a while, then the connection just drops. When I diagnose it, it says that there is a problem with the Domain Name Server Configuration, and says it was unable to ping microsoft.com. Then shortly after I will reconnect.

I'm not sure what all you need to know in order to help me with this, but what do you think I should do to repair this? These disconnects are getting really annoying.

I am connecticut through a wifi on a dell laptop.

The error report by Windows Network Diagnostics:
''There may be a problem with your Domain Name Server (DNS) configuration''

I have read some of the post here about this problem with Windows Vista, but I noticed that most of them seem to be laptop. My problem is with my Windows Vista Home Premium Desktop Computer, so that lead me to make the post. Anyways the problem is with the wired internet connection from the computer to the router it seems from reading other post. The other computer in the household that is connected to the router which has Windows XP installed has more consistent wired connection to the internet than my Windows Vista Desktop Computer. In other words, when I am watching from my computer a video or playing a game online the connection will usually drop and after a couple of minutes come back online. My temporary fix solutions are: Wait for the connection to come back online, restart the computer, and turn-off and on the modem. I am able to access the router setup page, unfortunately my computer skills are limited so I do not know where to put certain information and numbers unless specified. Here is my computer/ Router Information:
My Desktop Computer:
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit Operating System Service Pack 2
Motherboard AMD GIGABYTE GA-MA770-UD3 AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX
Router:
LINKSYS Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54GL

Please help me find a solution to this problem.

We have been seeing a lot of problems with the above adapters for over a year, mainly concerning WPA and WPA2 encryption and windows Vista.

The adapter gets an IP configuration, and shows as connected, but communication is non-existent or sporadic.

Log into the Router and disable the wireless security and see if you are now able to connect to the internet and surf OK.
--- Please post back here if that works or does not work.

Here are a number of possible solutions

--- 1) In Device Manager right click on the wireless adapter and "update driver." That apparently has worked for some posters.

--- 2) Download and install the latest wireless driver from your laptop manufacturer's web site support section, as some manufactures, appear to now have a working driver available.
Toshiba - update has worked for some PCs
HP The latest HP Atheros driver dated Sept 2010 has fixed the issue - so check the driver date, However, that does NOT apply to all HPs / Compaqs machines
- the poster did an online scan for driver updates on the HP website here HP Product Detection which resulted in a solution. Solved: Can't connect to internet wirelessly - Atheros AR5007 Wifi through Clear Comm - Tech Support Guy Forums

A couple of days ago, my computer decided that it isn't going to connect to the internet on a certain network. I can connect to the router, but between the network and the internet, there's a happy red X, and my network status is Local Only. When I do Window's disgonstics, it tells me that "There may be a problem with your Domain Name Server (dns) configuration". This is a weird problem because I used to be able to connect to the network (it's wireless, btw), no problem, but I came back from vacation and my computer won't let me. I can connect to any other network and get online, but I can't connect to internet service I actually pay for. One thing I've noticed is that I can ping the router, no problem, but I can't ping anything else.

I've tried researching this problem online, but I've seen lots of posts of people with this problem, but no solutions. I've tried disabling Ipv6, and making sure that all the settings are to aquire IP and DNS address automaticly, but none of this helped. Can someone please help me figure out what I've got to do to make this stop, it's very irritating being in the middle of doing a project and not being able to connect to the internet.

A:Problem with my DNS configuration?

A lot of people seem to have a similar problem (me included)

I don't have a proper solution yet but what I do for now is open a comand prompt window. (Hold windows key and press R then type "cmd" and press enter) and type "ipconfig /renew.

This gets me back on the internet but unfortunately I have to do this every time I switch the computer on so there must be a better solution out there.

I added a DLINK DAP-1522 to a Netgear wireless router to extend its range. I set up the DLink as an "Access Point" for Wi-Fi clients to access the network. One thing that I notice was that I could access the DLink configuration web browser when I'm connected to the Netgear router or the Dlink unit.

The opposite doesn't happen. When I'm connected to the DAP-1522, I can not access the "Netgear configuration" web browser. Also, I'm not able to access the internet or the other computers in the network.

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue that I just noticed today. Originally, when I would click on links in Google, I would get redirected to some random advertisement site. That was a red flag to me, so I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and went ahead and deleted whatever it found. Then, I started noticing that my Microsoft Security Essentials is not working. It says "Security Essentials is not monitoring your computer because the program's service stopped. You should restart it now." When I click to start it, I get the following message: "Couldn't start the Security Essentials service. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Error code: 0x80070424." This raised another alarm for me as that usually is a sign of an infection, I believe. I then went to my control panel to check on Windows Update and noticed that the icon for it is just the red shield thing with an X in it. When I click to check for updates, I get: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I also noticed a little bubble on the Windows Update screen that says, "Find out more about free software from (null). Click here for details." I can't say that I've ever seen that there before, so it's a bit suspicious. Lastly, when I go to check on Windows Firewall, I see it in red and saying "Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to ... Read more

A:Virus, Windows update, user profile and now Genuine Windows problem

If it gives you a access denied message while trying to activate windows; you may very well need to change the permissions for your user name in order for you to have access to it as windows 7 has quirks about having access to certain items even if your user name is a administrator. As for the non genuine windows thing; I strongly advise you in the future to never go to a non genuine site for any free browser. Always type the url directly into the address bar of the browser you use as that way you will encounter less issues. To get rid of the non genuine opera copy. I would download and install revo uninstaller from the link below and that should help to get rid of any registry entries in windows as well as the program folder:

http://www.revouninstaller.com/downl...e-portable.php

download, install, and run the uninstaller from the above link then do a google search for opera browser. Thats your best bet at this point.

I've been trying literally for 3 days straight from the time I get up to the time I go to sleep to try to fix this. I don't usually post on forums about this type of thing but I really need to fix this. Internet Explorer is of course, pre-installed on my OS.

A new job (I'm a freelancer) requires me to use Internet Explorer to activate a program (Autodesk 3dsmax) -- the activation screen doesn't show up!!

In any case, thats another problem all together but to fix that I need to fix Internet Explorer, and to fix Internet Explorer I need to fix the Windows Updater & to fix that.. I do what? I've tried every single thing possible.

So I'm probably going to need a more customized solution. I'm not sure what could fix my specific problem.

Extremely sorry to have to ask for help & thank you in advance. Even if it can't be fixed I'm extremely grateful for any help or advice that can be given.

Its important I find a way to fix this fast since I'm so behind on work now, so even if theres a regular user that has any good information - anything thats fairly well hidden, tips, tricks anything -- I'd be really happy to hear it.

Seems fixed - not sure what the root cause was - but in case someone finds themselves in a similar position, this is what worked for me. Plugged in a wired keyboard and mouse booted into safe mode, disabled all services apart from microsoft and intel ones. Stopped all programs loading on startup including anti-virus. I then restarted and booted as normal (ie not safe mode) I could now run windows update, so I did. Had a little trouble restarting the anti virus service but did a repair from the add/remove program in control panel followed by an update. Enabled all the services and programs I had stopped restarted and everything now seems ok. Not yet checked with the windows update troubleshooter not sure if I want to do that or not.........

I own an IBM ThinkPad R40, with a standard INTEL Network card (wireless). Oh! I can connect to my home network (A Netgear router) and when I am at the college I teach at, I can access their network too. The problem is everytime I want to connect, I have to go into the Advanced settings for the Network card and "Configure" the card. I think the real problem is that the "radio button" gets turned off everytime I power down the laptop. Yep! Kinda hard to connect to a server when your radio button is turned off. Okay, so I go in an turn the radio back on. Everything is fine, I can download pages like crazy. The only thing is, once I am done with my session and turn the power off the laptop, somehow the radio button gets turned off and I have to go through the configuration process all over again. I suppose I can keep doing this, but It would be really nice not to. Anyone have any suggestions.

Somebody earlier made a suggestion about a "toggle switch" but I don't know what they mean. If anyone has an idea, please let me know.

A:Memory configuration problem!

hello and welcome,

Generally boards that support different ram types do not support using the different types of ram at the same time.

I would get rid of the EDO's and just put the 2 big sticks of SDram in the machine (128mg) should be fine if your running Win98 or ME.

I'm on ADSL Zoom X3 modem connected to my PC with No other Router connected

when I used a bittorrent for the 1st time (Azureus), I got NAT error problems, this happened to everything I tried.
It tells me I have no remote access & icons stay on yellow?
I checked all the wizard configurations & whatnot, they all told me I have a NAT error

I just want to know if theres anything I can do? because when I switched to my AOL 56k connection, the NAT error was not present there
SO is my NAT messed up or not set up correctly???

I don't have a router so I can't open any ports only on it,
I'm only with my DSL modem, so I went to my DSL setup page

I went to the NAT CONFIGURATION OPTIONS
the screen had this info:

NAT : Enable
Mode: Dynamic

Session: blank (no other options listed but can be typed on)
User IP: blank (no other options listed but can be typed on)
Action: add (& another option for delete)

Number | Session | Name | User IP
# of NAT configurations: 0
I tried switching to disable NAT!
the description makes it seem like hackers can get to my IP & whatnot without it, but I tried anyways, BUT I could not connect to the net anymore after that, I had to re-enable it.

All I know on on Azureus is that in options it states 6881 as the incoming TCP listing port.
there is no Session or User IP info there to find & typing 6881 on User IP just tells me it's an inncorrect IP
can anyone help?
anyone with any knowledge of this??
is it poss... Read more

hi guys

and first of all i thank u for reading this

I am using the fallowing configuration

intel 946GZis

intel core 2 duo 1.86

3 gb of ddr2 ram

and a nvidia 8400gs 256 mb g-card

I need help in 2 things here

i had this problem sometimes but suddenly a day my system failed to boot . usually before that my system boots with a "CMOS error "(my sytem time changes even though i replaced a new cmos battery)after i push the reset buttons twice or trice after getting no display in my computer

but suddenly a day whatever i try nothing worked and i was not able to boot my computer

so i started to examine and when i removed my graphics card from my mobo i was able to boot my system

and one more thing i noticed from my bios is that my ram which is like 1 gb that i brought while building my computer was 667 MHz and after that i upgrade the ram with another 2 gb but it was clocking at a speed of 800 MHz

so while that give any problem?

and my computer is working fine now after removing the graphics card..i have the old 1 gb(667) ram in the first ram slot and 2 gb(800) ram in the second ram slot

my system memory shows 3 gb.. but when i switch ram from their slots, some times i face booting issues.

i am currently not using the graphics card but when i used the computer before i used a overclocking software to overclock my graphic cad.. and i am confused
now.

the confusion is ..

1) was the boot issue was because of the faulty graphics card?

A:I need help with my configuration - boot problem

1) was the boot issue was because of the faulty graphics card?
if it is i have to change my grapics card ..and will my pc support 9600gt?

your MB will support the 9600gt. you can use any PCIE card (as long as you have enough PSU)
2)two ram clocking at different speed?
Always best to have matching ram. a mismatch can cause problems in many different ways. but if you want to use the diff RAM modules together, try putting the slower (667) in the 'A' channel. the RAM will operate at the speed of the slowest module(s)

3)whether its because of any problem in my mother board
It could be the MB. it is much more likley that it is the Graphics card, especially since you said you were OC it.

Has anyone had a problem with this plugin? When I check the settings in Firefox, java is enabled. There is a help page at http://www.rjonna.com/ext/gspace.php? but when I read the FAQ, there is no help or solution for this problem.

I have no access to the internet through ethernet. It says "local area connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration.
I tried rebooting modem and laptop, using different operating system,
"ipconfig /release", then "ipconfig /renew". Is there anything else I could try?

Thanks

A:Ethernet ip configuration problem

I found myself experiencing this same issue about three weeks ago. Incredibly annoying problem. I now have a new modem (probably not needed) and a new ethernet card (possibly not needed).

I am assuming that your modem is wired directly to your computer. If it is connected to a router you will need to disconnect it and wire it directly to the computer. Now please do the following:

1. Click on start; go to all Programs; go to Accessories; right click on Command Prompt and click on Run as
Administrator.

2. In the command prompt window type
netsh winsock reset
and hit enter. This may take a bit of time so have
patience.

3. You will now have to restart your computer in order
for the changes to take place.

The following information is taken from:
How to change a 169 IP Address | eHow.com

4. Once you have restarted the computer go to:
Control Panel
Network and Internet
Network and Sharing Center
Change Adapter Settings

5. Now right click on the Local Area Connection and
disable it.

6. Now unplug the power to your modem. If it has a
battery backup remove the battery.

7. Leave the modem unplugged for at least 30 seconds.

8. Plug the modem back in and allow it to reset for at
least one minute. Once all the lights on your modem
are back to their normal state the modem has reset.

9. Once the modem is re... Read more

Hi folks. I am fairly computer illiterate, I use them for e mail, to shop, and to get information. About a week ago, computer started acting funny while on the internet. Now I can rarely get to Hotmail, and most of the time I can't get to some Microsoft sites, and so far tonight I've not been able to get to any Mozilla sites. Also, my System Restore doesn't work, I get an error message saying "System Restore was not completed, your files were not changed". Also also, I deleted Internet Explorer, I was going to download it again, but I discovered that that's (downloading Explorer) not possible - at least I haven't been able to do it. I did that with XP, and it worked fine, but I guess they somehow embedded Explorer in Vista and you're not supposed to delete it. I've Googled to try to find solutions for this problem, and I did find something that said it would get rid of any virus, malware, and whatever else, and it appears the virus is gone, but looks like it did some damage before I got rid of it.Normally, if I'd been in my nice clean country, I would have taken my computer to Best Buy at first sign of malfunction, paid $40 and had the thing back the same day good as new, BUT, I'm stuck in Peru at the moment, and I have yet to find a single person who could do anything right over here, and I'm not about to let any of them anywhere NEAR it.So, anybody have any suggestions for me - besides to get a Mac next time ?

A:Virus, Configuration Problem, Etc?

I dont think you have uninstalled IE as it is part of the OS...more later.Do you have a virus scanner? If not try the link http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.htmlI would also download and install super antispyware and run a full scan. http://www.superantispyware.com/In your search box type Internet Explorer and you should see the short cut to it just copy it back to your desktop, hold down the right mouse button and drag it, then select copy.

Hi,
My wireless internet has stopped working. When I look at my wireless network connection, it says:
Windows cannot configure this wireless connection.
If you have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection, use that softwware.
If you want Windows to configure this wireless connection, start the Wirelss Zero Configuration (WZC) service...
When I go to services.msc, I find that WZC is not running, but set to start automatically on startup. When I try to start the service, I get an error saying:
Could not start the Wireless Zero Configuration service on Local Computer.
Error 126: The specified module could not be found.
I had the same problem last week, and I was able to fix it by changing the settings on the NDIS Usermode I/O Protocol. I did this by going to my registry to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Service/Ndisuio and changing the value for Start from 4 to 2. However, the value is currently still set at 2, yet my wireless is broken again.
Any help would be appreciated!

Hi folks,

Glad to be on board, this website came highly reccommended by to me by some fellow members of a Boston Red Sox fansite, and I must say, the info here is great.

I finally have a question to ask:

Recently, I set up a pretty complete wired home network so that I could work from home more often. In so doing, I added two laptops and another desktop to my office, which used to house just a single desktop. They are all connected to my cable modem through a router.

Over the past several months, my partners and I have been using AIM and MSN Messenger's talk programs (I believe this is called Voice-over-IP, is it not?) pretty regularly throughout the day to stay in touch.

When the single PC was connected to the internet without a router, these programs worked easily and flawlessly. Now, as the four PC's are connected to the internet through the router (and are therefore behind the router's firewall??) I can not use either application for voice conversations on any one of the four PC's. Simply put, they will not establish a connection to my peers on the other end.

I am now on my second router (switched from D-Link to Belkin). The tech support from both companies has been horrible, and neither has been able to help me connect using these apps at all. They are all pretty sure that I will eventually need to open the correct port or ports, and will need to configure the router accordingly, but none of them seems to know how to do so themselves, and as suc... Memory Problem

I decided to add some more memory to my 256MBs, so I ordered the exact same module as I already have and it turned up today. I installed it and swiched my pc on. The first screen came up and it informed me that it had tested the memory and that it was OK and also that there was now 512MB of ram. Then it went to the next screen which had some said about Highpoint Technologies and there it stopped.

I took the new module out and re-booted and everything was normal. Then, I put the new module in on its own and re-booted and everything was fine. So now I'm stuck as to what to do. I know that my motherboard is capable of taking up to 768MB of ram so that was not the problem and it seemed that both modules were fine. I had also enabled ECC in my BIOS as both modules are ECC.

So, if anyone can help with this matter I would really appreciate it.
Cheers.

Si

Okay, so. I have a modem (Motorola sbv5121) and I have a router (D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G VDI-624). I just want to set up a wireless network. On the modem, all of the relevant LEDs are solid. TEL1 LED is blinking, but I believe that's because there's no cable in that slot. Irrelevant.

Then I have the modem connected to the router. Its LEDs also pretend that everything's okay. But I have no Internet connection. My computer does have an IP address assigned. But when I connect to the router, I don't have a WAN IP address (it's 0.0.0.0).

Now this router comes with a handy wizard, and gives you a choice between static and dynamic IP and PPPoE.when configuring (also some other options). I'm pretty sure that I don't have a dynamic IP, so that leaves two options. Is there any way I can check that? The owner of the router is currently away and I can't ask him. What do I do now?

Hello everyone,This is my first post on this site, but I assure you - I know my way around a computer. I am a Virus Removal / Networking Specialist for Iowa State University, and I have run into a unique problem, that I, nor our most skilled technicians have been able to solve. I have two machines (Client computers, that have been checked in; to utilize our services) that cannot connect to the internet. Both machines are Dell laptops running Windows XP, SP3: One on Professional, one with Media Center Edition. Both were getting a 0.0.0.0 IP Address. One still is, but I will detail Why the other one is still in question. We Have done almost EVERYTHING to fix these machines. We started with the obvious: Check Hardware Switch / Software Radio Button. This is working. We removed an IE Proxy from one of them, the other needed to be Auto-detecting the settings. Disabled Wireless, Testing just Wired - same issue.By now, We started thinking more advanced. We did a winsock reset on both, we reset the userinit, we ran a few virus scans / malware scans (finding nothing) SFC scans failed. We ran ComboFix (and I have the log) but it didn't really fix anything. Eventually, we tried using a boot disc. Everything worked PERFECT in the boot disc So we know it is NOT hardware related. Still nothing in Normal or Safe modes. Just a minute ago, I used System Restore (basically I cheated ) and It seemed to fix one of them; both wired and wireless had valid IP's. Then XP restated itself .... Read more

A:URGENT: IP Configuration Problem

I seem to have spoken too soon. Now the other machine has been restarted, and both wired and wireless are "limited or no connectivity" 0.0.0.0 IP address. Ditto for machine 1. Aaaaaargh! :D
