Hi guys. I have my TV connected via HDMI through my video card to my computer and also run sound through my computers speakers with the onboard sound. Normally I just change the audio device before opening a program depending on whether I want it on the TV speakers or computer speakers. The problem is that sporadically when I select the device for the TV speakers it doesn't provide any sound and no combination of turning the TV on and off, changing the audio device back and forth etc will let give sound on the TV speakers (but when i change to the computer speakers it works fine). I can't seem to reproduce the problem either, it just happens sporadically and the only solution is to restart the computer.
I have vista 32 bit ultimate. Any suggestions?
I have been trying to use my (win7.x64) Dell l502x laptop with my folk's new samsung lcd tv.
I finally got the sound bit working (opening nvidia control panel refreshes the audio playback devices list), but I have several erroneous devices that appear (and disappear) when connecting the TV.
I tried the same device (TV) with the same cable, with my brother's new toshiba laptop, and there were two playback devices (as expected) - speakers, and TV.
Mine looks like this
Can any l502x owners confirm (re driver install) if they did follow these instructions
R300420 Video: (Do "Custom Install", Uncheck HD Audio) nVidia GeForce GT 435M, GeForce GT 420M, GeForce GT 445M, Stereoscopic 3D, GeForce GT 525M, N12E-GE-B(LP)-GT 550M, N12E-GE-B ( GT555M), GeForce GT 540M, v.126.96.36.19921, A07 (155 MB)
willing to try anything to attempt to get this configured "properly".
also having issues with nvidia display driver crashing when external is connected, despite underclocking gpu as advised
I have multiple HDMI audio entries listed in the Sound Panel/Playback section. Mine are AMD HDMI audio as I have an AMD Radeon video card.
You have an NVIDIA video card so the reason for the NVIDA listings. The Toshiba may only have the basic Intel Video, for example, and the reason for only one entry.
Not sure this goes here, but in my research so far have found that Vista handles audio differently than previous Windows so here goes..
Running Vista Home Premium 64 bit on an ASUS P6T mobo with onboard audio that uses a SoundMax audio driver.
My old XP system detects my USB headset being plugged in and diverts audio out to the headset. On the Vista system I have to go into Sound from control panel and set the default playback device to USB headset in order to use the headset. Then when I am done with the headset I have to go back to control panel and set default playback to Soundmax.
Is there any way to automate this process? Sure seems like a step backward to me.
have you checked in control panel to see if the usb drivers are loaded correctly as it sounds like your usb port is not recognising or is not working try another usb device in the port try your headphones in a diffrent port on your comp to test both then check the drivers3 more replies
I have three audio devices on my pc (ATI HDMI, Via HD onboard and steelseries usb soundcard) and through all devices I only get audio out of the left channel. I have tried two pairs on headphones and my tv speakers all with the same results. I have looked at all the balancing end everything is set to even on both channels.
Windows 7 X64 ultimate
M4A78 PRO Mobo Via HD audio
Steel Series Usb SoundCard
As you have three devices, each one separately generates the sound. The only thing common would be the sound itself, such as a wav or mp3 file.
When you use the PC's sound chip (VIA HD) that is one hardware device and the wired on the motherboard output jacks. If you use a USB connected sound device then you are using that device to generate the sound and that device's physical jacks. If you use the ATI HDMI, most video cards have their own built in audio chip (unless this is an old video card that uses S/PDIF connection to the motherboard) and thus again everything separate for audio generation and connection.
One comment, if you have both the Via on board audio and the usb connected sound card enabled at the same time there can be conflicts and sound problems. Not the balance problem you have but there can be problems. If you want to use the VIA then physically disconnect the USB. If you want to use the USB, disable the on-board audio in the BIOS.
hi, i'm relatively new here, so i'm not really sure how to do this but alot of my games are having problems i.e. ? has cause in invalid page fault in unknown. I am led to believe it is a soundcard problem, i use an onboard sound card with the VIA VT1612A 2-channel audio Codec and i look in multimedia properties under audio devices, i had two different ones, Audio for via Ac'97 Enhanced Audio Controller(WDM), and Audio for Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM), i was told by a friend to uninstall the drivers and then reinstall to fix this, i did, now on top of those two devices i have a second Audio for Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM). I also have three MIDI for WDM-based Device. ANd Mixer for VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller (WDM), along with two Mixer for Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM),this may be normal, but like i said i'm relatively new at this and it doesn't really look normal, so can someone please help me? Thank You
Look at the back of your computer. Do you have onboard sound AND a seperate PCI sound card? If so then you need to disable the onboard sound in the BIOS setup and use only the PCI sound card.
Now go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall ALL VIA AC97, AC97, Vinyl audio drivers and anything else that looks like it goes to sound drivers.
Then go to Device Manager and uninstall/remove all remaining VIA/Vinyl/AC97 devices listed under the Multimedia heading. Reboot only after all are removed.
Then download the latest VIA Vinyl drivers. When you first run the new driver setup program it will look to see if there are still drivers installed, if it finds any then it give you the option to uninstall them. Do that and reboot.
Then run the VIA installation again and install the drivers, and reboot.
At any point Windows may redetect the sound card and want to reinstall the drivers - let it. Do NOT click Cancel on the Found New Hardware Wizard. If all goes well prior to install the latest driver the sound card should be detected as a PCI Multimedia Device and that means all the drivers will have been removed.
Here's the latest drivers: http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/Vinyl_AudioCode_v600a_M.zip
They are in a ZIP file, once extracted you need to run the SETUP.EXE file to install the drivers.
My system has a sound card and two USB audio devices. I can click the speaker -> options -> propertied -> mixer device and select 1 device and reboot and play via that device. However I would like to have all audio devices work at the same time. Is there a way to do this? If not, is there a way to switch without rebooting? (Windows 2000).
..................err? why do you need/want multiple audio devices from the one PC??????
Hi, I recently purchased a HP Pavilion dv6974 Laptop, it came installed with Vista 64-bit. It works fine and all, just one thing I want to figure out.
The laptop has built-in speakers, a built-in mic, 2 headphone jacks and 1 microphone jack. I plugged my headset into one of the headphone jacks, my headset microphone into the microphone jack, and my external speakers into the second headphone jack.
What I wish to do is to set it up in a way that I can play music through my speakers, and Ventrilo through my headset.
The way I did this before on my desktop was that there was this option in the Realtek Audio Manager called "enable playback multi-stream" that separated the two audio jacks on the computer (one in the back, and one in the front). Then I was able to choose a different audio driver for Ventrilo, and use the default one for music. This was on XP, and I only had one sound card btw.
And now for Vista, I've tried looking through the Audio Device Manager and the Realtek Audio Manager but couldn't find anything that would help much, except in the Realtek Audio Manager there's this "tie up all input jacks something something, etc" that sounded like it was what I was looking for, but all it did was mess up my microphone.
To add more to this confusion, there is actually another audio device in the Audio Device Manager, but it's the Digital Audio Receiver, and I don't really know what that does.
I've asked about this problem elsewhere, and some peopl... Read more
Hi, ForeverRen, and welcome to the forums.
I think HP would be your best bet in this instance....as they would be able to tell you for sure if that can be done with their hardware or not.
I'm not entirely sure if this is a Windows Sound issue or a hardware issue, so I'm asking this question both here and in a Windows Community Forum. Is it possible to output audio to multiple devices (i. e., can one assign more than one "Default Device")? For example, can I output to the USB-S/P-Dif device connected to my stereo and the bluetooth device driving my outdoor speakers simultaneously? I have an Envy dv7-7255dx, with the IDT Hi-Def audio codec, running 64-bit Windows 10 Home. Thanks!More replies
I'm trying to use my speakers for everything except one program. I want to use my headphones for a chat program called Ventrillo. any ideas or suggestions?
I've tried just about everything I could think of and still nothing. Tried changing audio output settings on everything and still cant figure it out. Anyone know if its even possible?
I've googled this endlessly with no result and I'm guessing it isn't possible but I may as well ask.
My laptop has one audio/mic port. I'm cheap and had a splitter laying around, my headphones, and a set of ear buds with a mic on it I combined to use as a headset.
This works fine, however, since the sound output is being split to both my ear buds and headphones, it doesn't sound as good and some things are faint, which isn't good for gaming.
Is there a way to manage my audio devices so that my ear buds is mic only and no sound, and my headphones get all the sound? I've found no options in Windows, just playback (speakers) and recording (mic). I assume because it's only one jack it isn't, but it can't hurt to ask.
I'll try to explain this as simply as possible... Currently, I have speakers, headphones and the headphone microphone plugged in. I'd like to record my Skype conversations using stereo mix, but stereo mix only picks up what goes through my speakers and not what goes through my headset. I've tried tinkering with the settings and haven't been able to get stereo mix to record what goes through my headset instead of my speakers.
How do I get stereo mix to record headphone audio instead of speaker audio?
For the past few hours, I've also been trying to get Audacity to record both stereo mix and my microphone. From what I've read, Audacity can't record two inputs at the same time, so is there a way to combine stereo mix and my microphone?
I'm using the latest Realtek HD drivers, if that helps any.
Thanks for your time.
You might want to check out VAC(Virtual Audio Cable). It is not a "free" program, so depending on you needs, it might help. here is a link to info about it:Virtual Audio Cable - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
and here is a link to download VAC:
Virtual Audio Cable - CNET Download.com
I used it myself to share music I was listening to over video chats. The program can be used in a number of ways. I no longer use, since I currently have a laptop with Stereo Mix, and that meets my needs just fine. Hope this helps.
Ok im not quite sure where this question should be posted but i noticed the problem when i was playin games so this is where i chose...
Basically i've got different sounds coming from my speakers and my headphones. I have teamspeak coming through my headphones but my game sounds and other sounds from the speakers. I cant seem to find a way to make them all come from the headphones.
Using windows 7 32 bit
Thanks in advance
Have you tried changing any settings within the Windows Sound panel?
Start > Control Panel >Sound > Playback tab
Look for Speakers...right-click and Disable
Look for the Headphones....right-click and Set as Default Device
hey guys. I recently been having so many problems with audio sync issues when mounting a 3D image. Video plays fine in my media player. (have tried totalmediatheater and poweriso11 seems to be the best so far). anyway it seems like it plays fine in 2D but 3D is giving it audio sync issues. I think ive pinpointed the problem and ive found that disabling my motherboard audio driver (intel) and enabling nvidia audio seems to have a better effect in 3D playback (again mounting). ive tried a few different 3d image backups by the way, i also didnt have a problem with intel hd drivers playing 3D but intel drivers started to give me a BSOD which lead me to buy a nvidia card for 3D. So back to the issue. Is there a way to have both audio drivers installed becuase I switch from tv to monitor for display and I have external speakers that I would like to use instead of my tv audio. I also have the latest nvidia drivers, chipset drivers, directx and most up to date bios. im running windows 7 64bit, gigabyte mobo, geforce gt 520, 12gb ram, intel i5 2500. Also says nvidia hdmi output not plugged in, in windows sound properties if someone can explain that. sorry for such a long typed problem.
I have to enable intel driver then reboot so I can use my external speakers, any easier way without rebooting and keep switching audio drivers.1 more replies
Our ISP recently updated their hard ware to work with the Sprint network. Note: our ISP is not Sprint, but the local phone company.
Internet: DSL 10.0 (highest speed available)
Modem: Comtrend (ISP provides)
Router: Belkin N
Computer: 10 yr old Dell running XP - service pac3 - wired connection
Kindle Fire (first edition, no HD, etc) - wireless connection
Xbox 360 - wireless connection
Xbox - went from constantly bumped from Xbox Live game by losing internet connection to not being able to enter a game at all
Kindle - went from occasional "network error' message during online tasks to having to restart download (multiple times) or refresh page for most any or all online tasks
Computer - have to click refresh to get most any page to load after the home page
What we've tried so far:
I have recently cleared the cache on both the computer and Kindle. XBox's new security measures have been met.
Do any or all of these issues seem to be related?
Is there a piece of equipment or something we may be missing to make all of these things work? I am a networking novice.
Who should I call to get these issues corrected, my ISP or a tech service? Note: if I start with the ISP and they do not find an issue I have to pay for the call.
First. You should try to NOT use a wireless connection for any type of gaming: PC, Mac, Console, etc. If you can hard wire the xbox you'll be waaay better off than using wireless.
Now... Yes, the issues could be related - there maybe an issue with the Belkin N router. I'd try to first reset the Belkin router to default settings, check on manufacturer website for instructions how, most routers you can press a "reset" button w/ a paperclip or ball point pen. Reconfigure the Belkin router, recreate the wireless network and see how everything works. If you are still having issues, humor me and connect the Dell directly to the DSL modem, bypassing Belkin router. See if you still have connection issues, if you do then it could be the DSL modem that is the problem and call your ISP to replace. If you don't have same issues then it's most likely an issue with the Belkin router. Replace it. Don't buy the dirt cheapest router at the store, but you most likely don't need the most expensive one either. Find a good middle ground router, ask sales associate to assist you accordingly.
Post back, Hope this helps!!
Hi, I very much want to know the answer to this problem. My setup is simple. I am working with my Mobo's onboard sound card (Mobo is Asus M3A32-MVP Wi-Fi) and here's the thing. I see multiple devices in both Vista and Seven (have a dual boot) - I see the front headphone jack, the SPDIF, the rear audio port (it's 5.1 surround) and also an HDMI. I've just recently bought two bluetooth headphones and I have paired them and see them in the audio devices panel too.
Now this is what I want to do. I want to hear the audio on all the devices simultaneously. If I turn on the audio system (connected to the SPDIF) then I should hear the audio there. If I connect multiple Bluetooth headphones, I should hear the audio from my comp on any and all of them.
So, why can't I do this? Apparently this was the default behaviour for Windows in XP. That is, any audio played was available on all connected devices. Now, here in Vista and Seven we have a major downgrade in that we have to select a SINGLE audio output device as the "default" device and when a device is selected as such, the audio stream is SOLELY passed into it. THIS IS SO VERY WRONG! It is so illogical to do something like this in today's world of changing and evolving multi-media environments. I mean, what if my Mom wants to hear my music from the kitchen at the same time that I'm listening to it as I work on my desktop. She should be able to simply plugin and start listening to what I'm hearing! This is RIDICULOUS!
I ho... Read more
I can connect to the Internet with my wireless router just fine, but only certain websites will load normally. So far, these include Google, Gmail, Youtube, Facebook, and Wikipedia. Most other websites just show that they are loading forever and nothing ever comes up. I've already tried power cycling/resetting everything.
As an example of what it says when I ping a website that doesn't work:

I also can't connect to Skype. Itunes doesn't respond upon launch, but only while I'm connected. It works normally while offline.
My phone has the same Internet problems while using wi-fi, but not while using data.
My Xbox One can connect to the Internet, but not to Xbox Live. When I test its network connection, it says "DNS isn't resolving Xbox server names"
What's also strange is that my roommate isn't having these problems on his computer and phone even though we use the same wireless router.
I've been stuggling with this for a few hours now and am at the end of my wits..
I've got two audio devices that I would like to link to my PC at once.
I've got one plug connected to the back panel, and one to the front. But one always cuts off the other. In my sound devices, the system registers them both as: "speakers, VIA High Definition Audio, Standard device"
Is there any way that I can connect them both at once, and still have both of them outputting audio?
I hope the internet will save the day!
Many thanks in advance!
If you use realtek,

Otherwise You're pretty much screwed, only other way is to use Virtual audio cable, but you'd have to set it up every time you booted (and it costs 20$)
I'm not sure whether to system restore or fight to try and fix my laptop but here are the problems that I am aware of.
- Recently the audio turns off randomly, USUALLY it turns off if I turn up the volume on the computer.
- The laptop has been getting progressively slower over the years
- The Icon Tray at the bottom, near the clock is broken, when I click the little arrow to expand, it takes about 10 seconds to load and then pops up as a huge, white, empty box. It takes a good few minutes for the box to close if I click on another window and the whole computer freezes up during that time.
- When I go to "Folder Options" and then go to "View", the icon for "Files and Folders" is a black square, and where "Hidden files and folders" is, there is another black box next to that with the two options listed in caps lock; "NOHIDDEN" and "SHOWALL". Both of which are un-ticked and cannot be ticked (I can provide pictures for any of these claims if that helps, I'm not the best at articulation).
Over the years I've tried various methods to fix problems that I just pick up from the internet when others get help, I've never actually sought help that applies directly to me. Here are my FRST and Addition logs.

The USB 3 stack is unstable in Windows 8.1 and Windows 8. I was hoping the upgrade to Windows 8.1 would improve the stability but no.
On two different motherboard systems I have had the same experience with 64 bit Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8.1 Pro compatibility with various USB 3.0 devices and hubs including:
An AFT PRO-57U front panel card-reader/hub, various Anker, Syba multiport hubs, and these are just a few I have tried, there are many more.
Symptoms are the same.
For example: the AFT PRO-57U slots are enumerated correctly as drive letters in Windows 8.1.
Then the drives (the PRO-57U slots) disappear, then reappear, then disappear, and reappear and so on. This happens consistently and the cycle time to disappear/reappear varies from 10 seconds to 10 minutes.
The Windows Device Manager shows the devices appearing and disappearing as enumerated devices. I have tried many trial and error methods to solve this, uninstalling and reinstalling USB motherboard drivers, different cables to the AFT PRO-57U device different

I am running an Asus M5A97EVO board on Windows 7 64bit. I run a Logitech G35 headset. So, I left out of province for work last year and was away for 8 months, once I returned I had a Hard drive failure and had to re-install windows on a new harddrive.
I cant recall exactly but I think the following issues came up after the install, they were definantly not there before I went away for work.
I play a PC racing game that uses audio
I use Teamspeak
I listen to Windows Media
I watch YouTube
I used to be able to do all 4 of these at once if I choose to. Now, If I have teamspeak open its hard to get my racing game going, sometimes I have to shutdown teamspeak, then get the game going then try teamspeak again. I cant listen to windows media and youtube videos wont load when I have my game and teamspeak running. If I close them, everything else works normally.
Its like I can only use 1 - 2 audio items at once, its really weird and I am at a loss as to what might be causing this.
Hopefully I have included enough information, anything else let me know and ill get it for you.
Not sure whats happening here but getting multiple displays for the same devices !!!!
Any fix, or is system Broken.
Looks like Ghosts of DLNA devices. Start by taking offline any DLNA capable gear, reboot the Gateway and also clear its IP Table.
Also clear out those ghosts from Devices and Printers.
For some reason this started in Windows 7, when Microsoft started to play games with DLNA and media Shares.
I have vista....up until today i have always been able to switch sound between my speakers and headphones just by pluging the headphones in and out of the hardrive but after a windows update i had to reinstall drivers...now i am unable to switch between my speakers and headphones automatically
my sound device manager asks for a deafult device and i can only choose the speakers or the headphones, but when I choose the speakers asdefault and try to plug in my headphones no sound comes out of my head sets
is there any way to fix it so that when sound is coming from my speakers and i plug in my headset the speakers are muted and the sound transfers to the headset...just as i was able to do before
thank you in advance and plz forgive me if this has already been covered.
Did you reinstall the drivers and software for your sound controller?
I have two USB audio devices that I cannot seem to properly install drivers for.
Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 & KORG MicroKONTROL
I am in communication with both product tech support teams but so far they have not offered a successful solution. As the same issue is occurring with multiple devices I thought it might be an OS issue.
I run Win 7 Home Premium x64
The problem is as follows:
The product drivers install correctly without error. However, instead of showing up in the Device Manager in either USB Controllers or Sound Controllers they both show in Other Devices with a yellow exclamation mark.
I have tried the following fix from this site (USB Driver - General Fix for Problems) and this actually enabled me to access a portable HDD that wasn't working, but it didn't fix the issue for my 2 audio devices.
I have also tried right clicking on the devices in Other Devices, selecting Driver Update. I then find the correct drivers listed but when I hit install I get the following error message on both:
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. One of the installers for this device cannot perform the installation at this time."
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Could it be the two devices are competing with each other and the driver installer gets confused? Details on the devices and the needs to use two of the same type probably would be helpful.4 more replies
I just recently purchased the HP 27xw from my local Costco Wholesale and so far I love it. But I do have one small issue I'd like to see if there's a work around for. I have plugged in both my PC (HDMI 1) and my XBox 360 (HDMI 2) into my monitor. But trying to "switch" bakc and forth between them is impossible due to the limitations of an on-screen switch found within the software on my PC. Is there a manual switch for this, perhaps located under the screen where the power button is? I can feel there are several buttons under there, but I don't want to press any of them for fear of screwing up something. Can anyone assist?
Hi, Please try the Source button which is next (left hand side) to the power ON/OFF button or OSD. They may help otherwise an auto HDMI switch can do the job very well. Regards.1 more replies
I consider myself an advanced user, but this one I've never seen, nor can I find info out for...
I haven't been able to plug a video camera or external hard drive into my computer via FireWire. I then tried a different cable, nothing. I then tried a different device and cable, nothing. I then tried a different computer with two devices, nothing.
My USB2.0 works fine with each device and computer. I also took the new computer into CompUSA and they tried their firewire device and all worked. I bought a new firewire cable, but I have the same luck with each device.
How can 2 external hardrives, and one sony camera not work, after working for a year. What happened? What do I need to do?

There are multiple websites that I cannot connect to, facebook, rottentomatoes, youtube, to name a few. Others seem perfectly fine. A few seem okay, but seem to be running slowly.
This is the case for both my computer (on which I am running Windows 7), which is connected directly to the router, *and* mobile devices which are connected wirelessly.
On my computer I have tried using several different browsers to no avail, but when I used the TOR browser to proxy, I was able to access them.
I apologize if this has been asked, but I haven't been able to find anything this specific.

Alright here's my situation:
I have a Core2Duo PC running Vista Home Premium 32 bit, hooked up to my TV using a HDMI cable. This has been working fine for 2 years now. Yesterday I decided to add some more RAM to this PC (4 GB instead of the standard 2 GB to be exact). I know 32 bit will only read 3 GB but I was thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit later.
Anyway I booted up the computer, worked fine of course, even watched a movie or two without problems. Then this morning I booted up the PC and I suddenly noticed the volume icon saying that there were no audio devices detected! I checked under Hardware and there are no audio devices whatsoever! So my HDMI cable is still giving me picture but no sound! Seeing as I'm using onboard audio I immediately booted into the BIOS and although I couldn't find a specific option that said onboard audio I did see something audio related being "HDA" (I assume HD audio) on automatic, the other option was ACRealtek97 or something. However it was enabled so no luck there.
Does anyone know how all of a sudden my HDMI cable isn't providing audio anymore? I even checked my Nvidia card which also stated that HDMI audio was enabled.
I hope anyone can help me, thanks in advance.

I'm gonna try and lay out my problem very simply, and then tell you what I have tried/done.
PROBLEM: When I plug in Headphones, I can not hear anything, and in the playback devices, nothing is shown to be plugged in. This goes the same for my other audio device which is a bose sound dock (for ipod but I connect using a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable)
Okay, so here goes. When I first build the system and installed windows, i wasn't thinking much of the sound as i was installing updates and video card drivers and what-not. I did, at some point, connect the bose to the computer using the 3.5mm jack on the front panel of the computer. It worked fine, I heard the little sounds the computer makes when logging on. Since then I have had troubles with my network card and ran windows update and various other things.
Now no sound works at all. When I realized this I tried:
-Changing the actual front panel cable that is connected to the mobo from hd audio to ac 97 (and changing the setting in the bios)
-Searched for many hours online trying many different solutions such as:
-rolling back drivers
Other things i've tried:
-install audio drivers from mobo disc
I have moved past being extremely frustrated and I now just dont know what else to do.
I would greatly appreciate any feedback what so ever :)
Ask me any questions you want
I have just installed the audio driver for my motherboard, restarted the computer and it seems that driver doesn't do anything at all. I have the speaker icon in the tray bar with a red 'x' on it, and it says: "No Audio Output Device is installed". Why is that? I tried the driver that's on the motherboard CD and also the one from Realtek's website, and while they are different versions, the problem is identical.
You have posted in Windows 7 forum but your spec says
OS: Windows Vista
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-P35C-DS3R
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
RAM: Kingston 2GB DDR2 667Mhz
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD2400XT
2. Is it the same system please but with 7, if NOT please post the spec
3. What does device manager show please for sound - on the entry there
first i'll give ye the spiel about my laptop audio setup
I spilled a pint of vodka and blackcurrant all over the keyboard a few years ago, all this has damaged is how my speakers work (despite the wireless card and under the keyboard being covered in sticky sugar crystals)
(a) the two embedded speakers emit faint crackling when music is played at max volume.
(b)the embedded subwoofer works fine
(c) the headphone socket only works when a jack is inserted halfway in a very particular manner (giving audio to one desktop speaker only)
I've been using cheap "Trust SP 2750p" stereo usb speakers for the last few months (not interested in spending money on a proper external soundcard setup)
My question is: Can I configure windows or some application to allow audio playback through the usb speakers and the laptop speakers simultaneously? The internal subwoofer is pretty powerful and should sound quite nice combined with the usb speakers at reasonable volumes.
I've tried googling this but to no avail
Realtek AC97 soundcard, Acer 2003 wlmi,
Is there a windows xp config or software available that'll allow me to play audio through my usb speakers and internal laptop speakers simultaneously?
many many thanks if you can help me out
First thing you should do is clean the sugar and gunk off the inside. I can't believe the keyboard still works
I have an Acer E1-571 suddenly I have an X on my audio controller icon on home page and no audio devices in control panel. I have tried installing sound video and gaming controllers and then tried to install update but it says best already installed and still no Audio.
Any and all help greafully appreciated and many thanks in advance
Look for audio drivers on the motherboard CD delivered to when after purchasing your system. If you can't find it or don't have mobo CD around, navigate to manufacturer website and download driver for audio device from there.
my computer's sound has stopped. I have searched through lots of websites looking for help.
I first noticed this problem when I tried to open iTunes and it came up with the message 'iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/video playback may not operate properly'. I also cannot listen to music or things online either.
I have looked at my computer's device manager and can't find any catergory such as 'sound, video and game controllers', which one site suggested to try and check the sound card. I have also tried to update quicktime but that did nothing. I have also tried looking at 'sound' and under both the playback and recording columns it says that there are no audio devices installed. THis appears to be the common phrase along a problem with the audio configuration.
This has not ever happened to my computer before and I have had it for about 3 years now. It is a toshiba laptop with windows 7 home premium.
Please help guys, I am really frustrated.
If its not being detected at all in the Device Manager, it will not show up anywhere else.
When you boot up your PC, enter the BIOS (could be called "Setup") and check to see if the sound is disabled. If it is disabled in the BIOS it will not show up in Windows. If its showing as enabled in the BIOS, do a BIOS reset (to factory setup) and see if that makes a difference.
If its not disabled in the BIOS there is a chance the hardware has failed.
We frequently visit state websites to use their Java based permitting sites and are wondering if it is possible to set IE to switch between which Java version is used. Certain sites require older versions of Java to function, while others require newer ones.
We can have both versions installed, however IE seems to use the latest version automatically, so we end up uninstalling it when we need to download a permit on the site that requires the older version.
If there is an easy way to tell IE which version to use, please let us know. Thanks!!

My problem is I need to have 2+ programs running that are normally a single instance only application. I've been trying to simply fast user switch and let them run in the background. I can log in fine on any of my accounts when it is my first log in (after boot) however; when I go to switch user it will bring me back to the account selection menu but it will claim I have a password for every account. This is not true as I created a few tests ones without a password and can be logged into fine on boot. It will display a password field however nothing works.. accounts that do have a password never work either regardless of the fact that the password is correct. I am running xp home sp 1, sp2 is not possible as I am on a 3200+ machine. Any suggestions?
My next train of thought is perhaps there is an easier way to run 2 programs which are designed to be single instance applications. Using run-as does not work and I can't seem to locate any resources on this front. Perhaps editing memory? I would give that a shot as I've done some basic editing to get odd things like this to work in the past but dealing with windows I have no idea where I'd start.
Thanks for any advice or suggestions!

First timer here. Hoping somebody can help.
What I'm trying to do is toggle back & forth between two user profiles within Outlook while it's open and running (just as you're able to within Outlook Express).
Let me further explain...
1. I set up multiple user profiles for Outlook 2002. (Not a problem)
2. When starting Outlook it'll ask me to select a profile.
Then, Outlook will open the selected profile accordingly. (which is fine)
However, to be able to switch from one profile to the other
(e.g. - Switching from Profile A -to- Profile B),
I must close Outook, restart it, then select Profile B.
3. Summary: I don't want to have to close Outlook & restart it to switch
between multiple profiles.
Does anybody know if this is possible? If so I'm hoping you'll be kind enough to explain how to make this happen in an elementary like way so that I don't screw things up.
Thanks for any help you may be to provide.
Never heard of a way to do this without closing Outlook.

I want do do some filming of me at my workstation for Youtube. I have three monitors, default color settings for them are fine for my eyes. But if I film them as they are, they are way too bright and have a strong blue tint to them as recorded on my camcorder, so the picture the camcorder records is totally washed out and you can't see anything on the screen. I have two Nvidia Geforce video cards and I can change the colour settings using the Nvidia sliders to make the monitors much darker and less blue, for when I'm filming, so that although it looks "wrong" to me sitting there, it looks "right" on the camcorder, but there's a lot of sliders to get through for the three monitors and there doesn't seem to be any way of saving the results in Nvidia as a distinct profile. Then if I want to go back to "normal" use I have to undo all the changes.
Can anyone point me to a method either in Windows or a separate application that would enable me, at the click of a mouse, to go from having three monitors at "correct, normal" colour and brightness settings to "being videod for Youtube" settings, and a single click back again without deleting the special colour settings please?

I just went out and bought a mic from bestbuy and I plugged it in, I had a small bit of trouble getting the headphones to work, but eventually got them working.
Now I am having trouble with the microphone part of the headset. It is plugged in properly to the back of the computer in the correct jack, but for some reason under "Recording" it is giving me the message of "No Audio Devices Are Installed."
I have no clue what to do and was wondering if anyone out there could be of assistance to me?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!
I just plugged in my old headset which IS a USB headset and it recognizes it but I am unable to speak, I dont know if its because the mic doesnt work anymore or if its another problem.
My new mic is NOT a USB headset, it has two different plugs, 1 for the headphones and 1 for the microphone jack in my computer. So is it because of that feature that my computer is unable to recognize the new microphone?
I have no idea what can be going on here. I recently updated to win 8.1 after I just got my freshly installed win 8 lenovo ideapad U510 back from the repair depot. The following errors occured that I can remember:
Kernel Security Check Failure
Bad Pool Caller
Driver Corrupted Expool
Most of it seems to occur when turning my wifi on and off, but it's happened plenty of other times right after booting as well. I have attached the diagnostic tool files - thank you so much in advance for any help you can provide
crashed again during a restart - with a new error now = Driver power state failure (sigh)
and again with yet another new error - System Service Exception
I have a strange problem with my PC's front audio jacks:
I use my computer with a television through HDMI, in order to get sound through the TV. The TV's headphone jack is difficult to get to and plug something into, and my computer has an audio jack on the front (which has never worked until now)
I got it working today by playing around with the settings in Realtek HD Audio manager; however, whenever I plug my earphones into the PC, they are not switched to and audio continues to play out of the TV. To make use of the audio jack I have to switch it to the default device, and then audio will play through my earphones.
This may sound lazy but I don't want to have to go through that every time I want to use my earphones. Consider that I will most likely be in the middle of a game, so it would be a pain to quit out, change the default device and start said game up again - especially if it's a multiplayer game.
I shall point out now that the only way I could get the front audio jack to work in the first place was to disable auto detection in Audio Manager.
So, what I'm asking is, is there any way to make it switch to the audio jack when I plug in my earphones?
My sound/audio output works fine whenever I start the laptop. I've noticed when I start Itunes, shut it down and close the laptop into sleep mode; when it wakes up there's no audio.
I have to reboot in order to get sound back. I can visually see the green sound audio reading in playback devices but no sound.
Is Itunes isolating my audio output engine somehow?
Drivers are up to date.
Any help much appreciated, cheers

Hey all, question for the multi-talented aliens among us . .
I have my Realtek Audio device connected to my home theater reciever through s/pdf and to my monitor through the green jack on the back of the pc.
When I am surfing the forums or what not, I have sound set to analog through my monitor. When I switch to Media Center, My output is moved to the s/pdf by right clicking the little speaker and selecting playback devices, and changng my default device, then startng Media Center.
However, sometimes . . . . . I forget to do this and I have to close Media Center and make the switch.
Question is this. Is there a hot key or software appy that can do this for me when I launch Media Center? . .. Perhaps a Batch file, witch I have no experience with.?
Oh man...I need this to, together with a solution for switching monitors. Why they do things like this? Change or remove things that worked well?
One possibility for you is to conect the tv audio on the front panel and combine the signal in audio preferences. A least with my Realtek I have this option. It is not switching but it is both at same time...
(Using IE6 on XP)
When I have multiple browser windows open and I am viewing one window, I get automatically switched to another window when page loading in that window completes. It's quite distracting; is there a setting I can change to prevent this?
Thanks for any help!
I have had a look around in the IE settings and I cant see something that will prevent this. I know it is possible in IE7 and Firefox.
I use w10 on 3 devices, a mid range gaming PC, linx7 tablet, and lumia640. On the whole the experience is pretty good, syncing works well, reminders, alarms, contacts etc. This was one of the reasons I opted for android early, using chrome on a PC gave a similar, yet skimmed down, one OS feel.
I've not had one BSOD since updating the 'rig', my mobile works great, and the tablet is amazing for ?49! I was talking to my father in law who uses all 3 main OSs every day, and we both agree that windows just feels more 'grown up' than iOS or android. He wants a win10 phone next to replace his android (he'll have to keep the company iPhone4).
So like I said, does anyone else have a similar experience?
yeah i have no probs with my Lumia 920, HP work laptop and 2 of table computers at home.
just pisses me off to have the same background on each computer and i seem not to be able to find a setting to keep that sync out
I want to use the audio simultaneously from my ati 4550 HDMI, Sony blue-tooth speaker via usb BT dongle, 3.5mm jacks on my mobo, and also from a spdif and digital coax linked to the mobo via on board header to expansion bracket with ports.
I know this all may sound like overkill, however I don't have the funds for high end switches / replicators, etc. So manually changing them has been a hassle.
I have done some reading and I know se7en doesn't let you. I did this with xp x64.
Anyone know of a "work-around" or hack to enable all devices at once?

i have a gigabyte mobo/amd cpu w/onboard hdmi
my issue is sound switching right now as it stands, i need to manually switch on my pc between the HDMI audio as my main device and my PC speakers as my main device... on my laptops this is not a problem, it can automatically detect if hdmi is plugged in and switch sound over..
the main reason is its a slight pain to keep going over after a movie and switch over, nor do i want to disconnect a hdmi cable every time..
any suggestions how to automate this problem???
Laptops have built in speakers and probably the reason the laptop has the needed hardware (and/or software) to accomplish this. On a desktop, speakers are not an "internal" device and probably the reason for this. I see the same issue posted on the Dell users forum.4 more replies
What a great Forum.
Have recently purchased a scanner radio for monitoring vhf/uhf local frequencies.
Fine radio, but a very poor internal speaker.
Would like to run its Line-Out into my PC, and use the PC's external speakers that I have on my desk, and
also, possibly, some of the audio apps/programs on the PC for adjusting the sound "quality".
Running Windows 7, the 64 bit edition on a Desktop PC.
Here's my question:
My son uses the PC also, as a different "User".
Even if he didn't use, I really don't want to go into the Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, and....
to change it over every time between the scanner's audio Line-Output, and some program he (or me) might be using, or some music he might have on an external HD, that also has audio on it.
What I would like, if there is such a thing, is a very simple, method (or icon) on my desktop that I can use to very simply switch these inputs with just a click or so ?
Is there such a method ?
Suggestions would be most welcome.
There probably is a utility somewhere to do that. But, I don't know what they are. A google search is your best option.1 more replies
Previous behaviour in Windows 7: I could leave an internet radio station playing on VLC for example and allow my partner to switch to her account we could still hear the audio playing.
I am aware that switching users in Windows 8.1 required me to apply the registry hack available in the tutorials.
Since MS might not have wanted to give us the opportunity to switch user as a default - making us sign out every time - it made me wonder if this is the reason the audio switches off.
But then again I can still leave a download running in my account and switch user and then when I return to my account the download has completed, so clearly activity is still occurring on the other account.
Any ideas how I can keep the audio going without having to run a new instance of a player in the switched account to continue listening?
Welcome to the forum!
Are they the same type of accounts as in Local or Microsoft? Don't know if that would make a difference but maybe.
Also is the default audio playback set the same in both?
We have a XPS 13 laptop here which is used in combination with a D3100 docking station. As soon as the laptop is plugged into the docking station, Windows switches over to using the audio port on the docking station.
How do I disable this? The user prefers to use the audio port on the laptop at all times, whether connected to the docking or not.(laptop is running Windows 10)

Using the system above, with my PC and TV at opposite ends of the same large room, I have to switch over audio via realtek default device, and video via windows display settings (show desktop only on monitor 1 or 2) whenever I want to watch a downloaded film on the TV and then back to PC to make this post, write email or whatever.
My question is how do I do this wiathout the need to switch audio and video back and to.
One solution I am considering is to get a 16:9 monitor for the PC and use "duplicate displays" on windows display settings and 2. get a pci sound card to drIve my PC 2.1 speakers leaving the onboard Realtek audio set to digital output via SPDIF for the 5.1 Amp & TV setup.
I welcome comments on my idea as well as any other suggestions or ideas.
i dont know about the audio part...google something like playing same audio on 2 different devices....but for video, u can use the EXTENDED desktop mode...then u can just drag and drop the video player onto the TV. and switching displays is pretty fast with windows 7, just hit WINDOWS KEY + P and a bunch of options will come up
In Mac OS Quick time does this (I can have 10 audios all playing simultaneously). WMP nor VLC seem capable of this.
I need a solution to this for both Linux/ubuntu and Windows 7. Maybe there's a way to customize vlc or wmp?

I have an ethernet connection running from a router to another room and I wonder if I could use that single connection for multiple devices (computer, game systems, etc). Will a hub work for a connection coming from a router?
Is it possible to have them all up and running simultaneously or does it have to be one device at a time?
If it's a standard SOHO router, and not a switch or a modem, you can have up to 253 devices attached. (There are 256 addresses available, but you can't use the first or last address, and one is reserved for the gateway--the router itself.) Note that the 253 addresses includes wireless devices.
Ok, this isn't really pc related, but I'm sure it's an issue many of you face every day. I have a PDA/GPS, cell, bluetooth headset and blackberry. I use each every day, which means every night I have to plug all four devices in to charge. Does anyone know of some kind of charging station that would house all four power adapters neatly and allow me to charge all four devices from one outlet? Is there some kind of travel charger that would let me plug all four devices in to charge at once? Such a hassle taking all four adapters every time I travel.

So here's the setup:
Windows Home Premium X64, 8GB Ram, I5-3570K CPU
Recently built. I understand there's been an issue with Windows 7 using different devices for audio outputs. I was told by MS IT to use Virtual Audio Cable (VAC) for 'combining' my programs/devices into the same output.
My computer is mostly built for Audio recording (Audacity, Adobe Audition), and virtual instrumentation (Reason 5, FL Studio, Abelton, etc...)
My issue is that while some of these programs work well with VAC, key important ones such as Reason 5 do not. With my particular soundcard and driver, there is a degree of latency between the time I press a note on the keyboard to when I can actually hear it.
FL Studio automatically bundles ASIO4ALL - an awesome '0 latency' driver pack that comes with a easy to use control menu. ASIO4ALL is automatically selected as the audio card driver.
However I am unable to use VAC whilst keeping the latency low at the same time.
I need some help if you please!
I have a Sonar X2 (Producer) studio. Something like your questions would be better answered on a board such as www.gearslutz.com where recording and DAW equipment is the topic of the forum.
I don't like ASIO4ALL, it can cause problems. I've had problems with trying to use it when I had a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40. I've seen other posts (on other forums) about ASIO4ALL problems.
I have a Roland Octa-Capture and an MAudio Fastrack Ultra 8R and I only use the drivers supplied by Roland and MAudio.
Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit. Home network. Already have 3 printer devices. One printer is All-in-One (HP). Want to keep that device installed and be able to use all functions. Want to add a desk top scanner for speed and versatility. The All-in-One is network cabled and also USB to my desktop computer. The desktop scanner is not network; would be USB to my desktop computer. I seem to recall reading somewhere (not sure of this - maybe HP literature to discourage buying other scanners) that you can't have more than one scanner. Doesn't seem logical. Is more than one scanner (using only one at any one time) OK?
As far as I know you have as many usb devices hooked up to one computer. There is a theoretical limit of 124, but it really is determined on how many usb ports you have as to how many usb devices you can hook up. Each device has it's own driver/software package, so I don't see any real reason you couldn't. I know for a fact you can have a printer (all in one) and scanner hooked up at the same time. My dad did using XP, Lexmark all in one printer and an HP scanner.4 more replies
i have speakers connected to the hdmi and have a fm transmitter connected to the headphones jack. how do i get the soud to come out of both? Picture:
You can't have sound from both at same time - it's either one or other because the headphone jack is designed to mute the speakers when headphones are plugged into it.
We receive Email on Desk Top, Ipad and Laptop that is repeated each time we open a computer and look at the mail . Also have two programmes on the Desk Top that again repeate the mail : Windows Live Mail and Mozilla Thunderbird. This causes untold mail and most annoying. How can I just see the mail once on either of the computers. We run Windows 7 on the Lap Top and Desk Top, the Ipad is the current model.
Hope you can assist me please, my husband and self are not very computer literate.
The closest thing would be to set them all up as IMAP instead of POP accounts. That way you get all the same email, the same deletions and moves, and the same emails marked as read across all devices. It doesn't quite prevent you from seeing the email more than once unless you move that email to another folder or delete it in which case the same thing will happen on the rest of the devices.
You would have to check with your email service to see if they support IMAP and to get the correct settings. Or post your email provider here.
Also, I changed the title of your thread from your name to something more meaningful.
I would like to connect a variety of wireless devices in my house to my work VPN while allowing other devices in the house access to my home network as normal.
I was hoping to find a wireless ADSL router that allows me to associate a LAN port to a VPN connection, then connect a wireless access point to that port. I could then run two wireless networks in my house, one that would connect to my work VPN and the other that would not.
Is there such a router?
If not, is there some other way of doing what I need?
Sorry for the bump, but would this do the trick?
I use laptop, with system speaker volume too low, almost inaudible.
It has inbuilt sigmatel HD audio, with 3.5 mm jack ( I do connect my headphone with it).
I also posses a bluetooth headset (DELL).
Is there any way I can get output to both the headsets?
I need this to watch movie, so that me and my room partner can easily listen via saperate sets fo headphone without difficulty.
as far as i know you cannot output to two audio devices at the same time from one program unless the program alows this (eg. PCDJ)
To solve the problem you could get a 3.5mm spliter and another set of 3.5mm headphones but this would probably require a trip to an electronics shop unless you have one already.
also post what OS you are running in case someone else knows of another way.
Okay this is something that has been problematic with Windows since Vista. Say I'm playing Borderlands 2 and I'm using a headset for the sound. I decide then that I want to unplug my headset and have the sound come from the speakers. I unplug it, but no sound comes out of the speakers for the game. They make sounds still, but the game doesn't come from it. And, if I plug the headset back in, I don't even get sound from that. This happens with other games too. How do I get a program to switch to a different audio output on the fly?
I suspect the issue is caused by the lack of proper audio driver in the system. Please check my answer to your first post which covers the audio issue.
When my child is logged on to her profile and playing an online game, she leaves the browser up and its always making noises and playing music...and this continues after we "Switch User" and log into my profile...its annoying due to the fact that while im on the computer and wanting to watch a video or listen to music, I have to have her log in and close it down...is there any possible way that something can be modified to have whatever is on the profile work on only that profile and not carry through?
Rather than switch user, log her off and then you can log on. This should take care of it.1 more replies
Forgive me if this isn't the proper place to put this, but I didn't see a forum specifically for audio issues.
Up until recently, my computer's audio setup behaved in a certain way regarding the way it would switch between sources. I use both headphones and a set of speakers I have the headphones plugged into the audio jacks on the front of my computer, while the speakers rest in the back. I often want to switch between sources in the midst of programs already running or otherwise displaying their content, say, if I have to get up and work elsewhere in the room beyond the range of the headphones. In the past, I was able to unplug my headphone jack on the front of the machine, and the computer would automatically route ALL current sound out of the speakers as the only remaining playback source. In other words, unplugging the front source would automatically switch sound priority to the back, INCLUDING programs that are currently running.
After being away from the computer this past week, I have returned and somehow this has all quite frustratingly changed. I still have both headphones and speakers plugged in in the same places, yet unplugging the headphones from the front seems to do nothing; the sound keeps trying to play through the unplugged headphones. Obviously, my thought was that I could just use the Windows Sound controls to swap the outputs. While this works when NEW sounds are created in newly opened programs, everything that was open and ... I recently installed a new video card(ATI Radeon HD 6870). After successful installation of the card and all drivers I found that my audio no longer worked. On AMD's website it says that the easiest way to fix this problem caused by an "IRQ conflict between the motherboard’s onboard audio device and the ATI Radeon HD graphics card." is to enable the on-board audio in BIOS setup.

Once again, my computer thinks it's been working correctly for too long
Here is the link to my previous thread: [SOLVED] Unknown BSOD from time to time
This time, it basically gives me a BSOD when the processor workload is higher than 20%, something runs out of memory or the computer has been idle for more than 15 mins. (Using YouTube, playing Games etc. etc.) Here are all the error reports:
Processor: AMD Athlon II x4 640
Installed Memory RAM: 4.00 GB (I don't know what manufacturer or model)
Motherboard: BIOSTAR GF8200E
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8200
DiskDrive: Hitachi HDS721050CLA362
As before, I have attached the needed files to the post. I was kind of stupid of me to mark the previous thread as [SOLVED] instantly.
Have you tested your RAM? You can use memtest 86+ or the ultmate boot cd. Have you tried booting in safe mode and then letting the computer sit for 30 minutes? Does the blue screen happen in safe mode?19 more replies
I've never needed a 2nd account until my partners laptop died. I've noticed however, that Win 8's implementation of it, is worse than previous versions of Windows.
Firstly, when switching user (which as far as I know can only be done with ctrl+alt+del) the screen will react oddly.
If I switch from mine to hers and then back, Chrome will be on my 2nd screen and explorer windows and apps open on the 2nd screen will be on the first. Sometimes it also puts everything (including desktop icons) on the 1st screen, as if I disconnected the 2nd screen. It is very frustrating if I have folders and icons on my 2nd screen in the way I want to see them and switching accounts will bring everything to the 1st screen. Any solutions to this? Or reasons behind it.
Another issue, although not a major one, is when logging off. I have a green lockscreen set for my profile, same as my partner. This, as the name suggests, should be the lock screen. But, if I log out (of either account) I get to a lockscreen which uses this wallpaper:
It also has a purple scheme rather than the red we both use. I've tried to find in the setttings a way to change this. But I can't.
Hello Darkstarr, and welcome to Eight Forums.
The tutorial below includes some other ways to switch users to help.
Lock, Log off, Restart, Shut Down, Switch User - Windows 8
It could be a video driver issue causing the displays to be reset and all windows to go to the main display instead of how they were.
In Windows 8 and 8.1 there are two "Lock" screens.
The user lock screen is the one that displays when a user locks the PC while still signed in to Windows, and when the user is selected on the sign in screen, times out, and returns to the lock screen. Each user is able to change their lock screen background image to an image of their choice. The default Lock screen image is the one that displays when there are no users currently signed in to Windows or selected on the sign in screen.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I am new to the site and went to hardware to try to fix an issue, Wayne and Frank both were very nice, Wayne recommended that i go to malware virus first, i have three issue i hope to receive some free advice on. the hardware issue was a wireless button not working, i believe the driver is bad, qualcomm atheros 9485 802.11b?g/n. but following directions seemed very difficult, as i am having an issue with redirects, new tabs opening and pop ups, so many in fact i am having trouble following download directions, i believe i have had as many as 6 at once, mostly multiple, but at times only one. When downloading often a new window opens when thing are correct, but not a half dozen and some are clearly not related, but many are close to what i want. i had a malware q pro something, google told me how to remove it, it returned, the conduit, thing has affect me, toolbars are installed with out my ok, so i read carefully when going through the steps. now i do not know what is my problem with all the unwanted pop ups, redirects new tabs new links, my wife works daily on a computer, she is a CAD operator, while out of town she bought me a new laptop just like hers except software. my desktop was down i was trying to re install either vita or windows 7, i had the system disks and a mirror of computer i bought. got to final step and crashes. have any suggestion on the virus issue as this conputer works with an ethernet cable but not wireless, so i... I am using my phones 3G to type this and it's a real nuisance since I cannot research information for essays and other important aspects that I need when studying for my A levels.
Anyway, it started last night around 11pm, everything died and I thought it was because of the bad weather.
I woke up to sunshine however the internet was still not working.
The router is a SuperHub 2 and it had no problems up till now, the lights for 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz are flashing and so are the other lights on the router - this the router is working.
The problem is the connectivity, I use my laptop, iPhone and computer all together when studying and playing games. All of which has the same problem. All have the 5 bars connectivity however they all say "no internet access" and no response from the DNS servers.
What is the problem then?
What I've done:
- I have release and renewed the IPs
- reset router numerous times
- turned on: off router numerous times
- fiddled with wires to make sure they're plugged in.
- turned on and off computers and laptops.
- set IvP4 to automatic.
- waited hours.
- went onto the Virgin Media router page via 192.168.0.X. Then I started the router up in factory status, starting I up a few times.
How do I fix this nuisance? I need the internet now, for work purposes.
Please help, since it's affecting me and my family members and all of our devices.
Does the Virgin Media router page give you a status of the WAN?
We had a bad storm last week and it took a few days after power was restored for Comcast to repair their lines.
I was able to get to my router, but the WAN address was 0.0.0.0 - can't get there from here!
If you have a WAN address, turn everything off (no power) then
power up your cable modem, wait a few minutes for it to cycle through what it cycles through
power up your router (if seperate) wait for it to cycle through what it cycles through
finally power up your machine and check the network status on the Virgin Media router
If you don't have a WAN address, report the outage to your provider. They probably already know about your area, but a call never hurts.

When I look at my drives in file explorer, a couple drives have multiple drive letters...
For example, my data backup drive, which is only one partition, shows up as drive "Int data backup (T(T(T" - unfortunately, it keeps changing the colon and closing parentheses to that goofy smiley face.
Same for a couple others... I've never seen this before in Windows 7, so what is this? Do I need to do something about it?
Also, in "Devices and Printers" from the control panel, I have FOUR occurrences of "DIRECTV2PC Media Server" and FOUR occurrences of "DIRECTV Mediashare Renderer"
Do they have anything to do with the multiple drive letters? What the heck are they for? And can I delete them?

I have an Xbox One, Windows Phone, and Windows 10 laptop. I have Hey Cortana enabled on all of them. I use it all the time on Xbox to control my tv volume and channel. I use it while I'm driving on my phone. I don't use it that often on my laptop, but sometimes I will use it to change songs or something while I am working. The point is, I have fairly justifiable reasons to have it enabled on 3 devices.
So lets say I'm watching football. I have my fantasy stuff up on my laptop, and my phone is near bye because its always there. I decide I want to mute the TV, so I say "Hey Cortana, Mute". The result? My Tv mutes, my phone and my laptop both tell me that they cant perform that function. I do that same with volume up? Same result.
Later, I say "Hey Cortana, call Wife". The result? My Xbox and TV either try to open Skype or give me an error while my phone calls my wife.
So year, having the same "Hey Cortana" voice commands for 3 devices was a poor idea. "Xbox, Mute" worked fine. I mean, I do feel like Cortana does a better job of understanding what I am telling it to do, but couldn't it have stayed as Xbox commands rather than Hey Cortana? I could just turn it off on my laptop and be happy with it, but I actually use it for my phone and my xbox.
Imagine when people actually start buying Surface Phones (if that ever happens). What were they thinking?
Lucky sod, we have three Xbox Ones, two PC's two Surfaces and three Cortana enabled Windows phones in our flat, we have discovered the meaning behind the phrase "She who's name must not be spoken"3 more replies
So on my home network, we have your normal cable modem, router, and gigabit switch setup. The router is a high speed linksys model (gigabit), and the gigabit switch is an 8 port. The ethernet goes all through the house, but I've recently built a media room. In this room I have a Zensonic High-def network dvd player for streaming media, a gaming/media pc, an xbox 360, ps3, modded xbox 1 for more media streaming and a wii. The wii isn't really relevant to the problem because it is wifi, but I'm proud of my media room.
The problem was that I needed to network all of these, and when the house was built, we only ran one ethernet port into the room. No big deal I thought, because as long as I'm just streaming media, a 10/100 switch would be sufficient. So I pulled out an old hub (not a switch). All of these devices were hooked up and it worked great. Then one day, it all just stopped. The hub was old, so I ran out and got a netgear fs605 switch on sale for 5 bucks at office depot. This still hasn't fixed the problem, but has helped me diagnose it. When I plug in the uplink, I get a blinking response. When I plug in the next device, it works and is recognized. However, every device after that causes the switch to stop working and just start blinking. No activity, it looks like an error code of some kind. Have I put too much on this little switch? It was working just fine for months on just a hub. Any thoughts?

I realize this is a forum for Windows 7, but I don't know where else to ask this question lol.
Earlier I made a thread about my mom's computer being unable to reinstall Windows 7 after a factory reset. I think I've found a possible fix for this, but I'm not entirely sure.
I'm currently in the process of installing Windows 10 on my own computer via the Windows Creation Tool, and I noticed that it gave me the option to not only install W10 on my own computer, but another's through a Flash Drive as well.
So my question: after I've installed Windows 10 on my own computer, would it be possible to also put a copy onto my flash drive to install Windows 10 on my mom's computer as well? And if so, can I bypass the product key requirement to get to the desktop? I've got some code that I used to grab my own product key in order to install Windows 10 for myself, which I can also use to retrieve my mom's product key if I can get to her desktop to open Notepad.
I've never booted a computer via flash drive, so I don't know whether or not I can do this. I don't have her product key, and I can only get it if I can access her desktop (unless there's another way, because the product key on the back of her laptop is too faded to read).
Thanks in advance!
Once you've made an install flash drive (or DVD or iso) from the Microsoft site, you can use it to upgrade any number of qualifying computers (genuine activated Windows 7 SP1) to Windows 10 without needing a serial. It must be the correct edition ie Windows 7 Home Premium needs a Windows 10 Home flash drive. A sneaky upgrade attempt from Home to Pro will appear to work, but won't activate (you will prob be nagged to buy the correct serial sometime in the future).
re : booting from flash - I found that the upgrade didn't work in that scenario. I had to run setup.exe from within Windows 7. If a clean install is your goal, once Windows 10 is installed, you can boot from the install media (flash, DVD etc) and install again, deleting all partitions. You don't need a serial for this, because MS 'remembers' the hardware and activates it accordingly. If you do this, all data and apps are deleted.
Edit - if your mom's computer isn't actually running, you won't be able to upgrade it to W10 for free.
I seem to have a bug in the USB drivers or such that I need help with analyzing. I have tried deleting the USB drivers and letting the system update the driver. I am rather a newbie at system diagnostics but somewhat proficient at computers so hopefully with your help I can iron this problem out. Thanks very much ahead of time

You have both Norton Internet Security and AVG installed. Please remove one or the other and see if your system is then stable.
Norton Removal ToolHaving two security programs that accomplish the same tasks can cause conflicts/freezes/hangs/crashes/etc. due to them using the same system resources simultaneously. If you had tried to remove one prior to installing the other, it may be that remnants remain and you should contact support for that product to get it properly removed now.
I have a dell dimension 2400 that I think is going kaput. I've had to format one drive twice and an alternate drive once (merely to test that the first hard drive wasn't the issue.) My primary problem and reason for my first reinstall was an OS hanging issue probably due to some hardware conflict somewhere - various solutions such as safe mode, repairing install and fixboot would not work (scared to use fixmbr without first checking all my options.)
Three soft formats later and both of my hard drive installs are ticking my ethernet adapter, among other devices, with a question mark. As an example, I've used the OEM disks provided for the 3com 4011 integrated ethernet controller, selected the appropriate driver and ended up with a code 10 on it. I boot to safe made and check all the hidden devices for obvious conflicts but no such luck, there are no other NICs installed on my PC and the rest cannot be removed ("you need this device to boot" message on uninstall attempt")
Does anyone know where I can find out which resources my device wants to use?
quick edit: it is XP
could it be a ghost device driver sucking up resources from a previous install?
question the third: HAAALP! according to the utility partition manager my system is in full working order (ha.)
many thanks for your gratuitous help.
I'm adding an everest report of the hardware for your viewing pleasure.
it can be viewed here:
Under XP, when I played an MP3 it would come out of my headphones and my SPDIF port to my AMP at the same time. Under vista I seem to have to choose and keep changing them manually (setting one as default) . Also, when I change them, it doesn't seem to take effect till I restart that application, mp3 player, movie player or whatever.
I seem to have similar issues with mic vs line-in. and switching between them doesn't always seem to work if in use and Mute options also seem to not kick in.
I read some scare stories about DRM but I'm not sure that this is relevent or not .
In XP, this just worked. sound would go into the IN's and come out of the OUTs and could be muted where needed. Does this work differently now?
Does anyone know if Windows 8 will intergrate multiple output devices to play at the same time? Windows 7 doesn't do it... which is stupid. Pirates will always find a way to bypass this, but I'm stuck without this important feature!!! This is absolutely CRUCIAL for HTPC (home theatre PC) people and/or DJ's or Music producers / Artists. I also use audio levelers like SRS audio essentials which is considered another audio playback device. This is truly ridiculous that I paid all of this money for Windows 7 and I can't play to 2 sets of speakers at the same time. And if I want to switch to headphones for a second for any particular reason, i have to go through a process... and make it the default device and when I want to go back to watching tv I have to go through the process again...... SO ANNOYING..... it's my computer, I should be able to play to ALLLLLLLL of my devices. That's why I buy all these devices so I can use them all simultaneously. This is so basic. Can you please update Windows 7 with multiple playback on all devices. I don't copyright infringe or rip dvd's to external sources, but even if I was a shady individual, which I'm NOT, I don't need multiple playback device to do this. You're only hurting ME, the consumer that pays for things I use. It's MADDENING. PLEASE UPDATE YOUR PLAYBACK DEVICES TO INCLUDE SIMULTANEOUS OUTPUT PLAYBACK TO ALL DEVICES.... OR AT LEAST SEVERAL... I mean really... for this stage of technology, this is totally ridiculous.

I've read through a could of threads but have yet to find any answers for my problem. Basically my internet runs fine when a device is directly connected to my modem. However, when running through a router I get 2-10 second disconnects at random intervals on all devices hooked up to the router, be it wired or wireless. I've already tired three different router, all different brands, among other various things like updating/switch firmware and changing the router over to a new wall socket with no luck. I had my service provider come out and switch the modem, but that didn't help any. Any help would be appreciated.
what cable is between the router and modem - has this been changed ?
you mention "wall socket"
As you have made a lot of changes to the modem and to the router(s) - i can only think of cable
Before making each connection , do a powercycle - see how below
connect with a small cable between the modem and PC - and that works fine
then with a 2nd cable - do the same
now you have two cables that you know work on the modem
Also while in that configuration post an ipconfig /all - see how below
then using the same cables - connect from the modem to the router
and using the known cable connect the PC to the router
Now test again and see if this time it works
We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.
If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply

So my household needs to upgrade internet. Our internet speeds are slow (3mbps) and my mom works at home with various computer programs as she processes documents and claims. She cannot deal with the lag in her internet speed caused by my brother playing his new xbox one (which I've heard takes up the internet like no other) and me browsing the net all at once.
I'm asking because I don't know about internet speeds, our current plan in our area is the best one (I know 3mbps is not alot) but apparently that is the highest service AT&T U-verse provides.
So I'm wondering if anyone knows what would be a good speed for internet considering all of this, it know this isn't exactly a computer problem but I wouldn't know where else to ask.
Thank you for your help!

No problem, this is the right section to ask in.
Now I'm a bit confused as to whether your potential Internet speed would be 3Mbps or 5Mbps (conflicting information in title and post). Either way, you're right that that isn't very much bandwidth. Your mom should be able to do her computer work assuming the file transfers she performs involve smaller Word, PDF, and text documents. The primary factors here will be what you do while web browsing, and the Xbox One connection.
You likely won't be able to play Xbox and stream video well simultaneously - that isn't even taking into account possible file transfers of your mom's.
I'm not sure where you live, but most developed areas in the United States have Internet speeds much higher than this. I recommend doing some research online to find out if this truly is your only option. With modern Internet content, I would say ~10Mbps is a good minimum recommendation for a pleasant browsing experience.
If you cannot find/get an Internet connection with increased bandwidth, then you all may need to dedicate times for certain activities on the Internet.
Right now I have my computer hooked up to two sets of I/O devices (mouse, keyboard, monitor) and I was wondering if you can separate them so that for example I can surf the web on one set and have a friend play a game on the other. Currently they show and control the same things.
Both monitors are on the same graphics card, one mouse/keyboard is USB the other PS/2
Thanks for any help.
Nope, there is only one console manager. Since you already have the monitor and keyboard, why not find a cheap machine and just have two?1 more replies
My speakers are connected to the rear audio output panel and my headphone in the front audio output panel. I tried changing the setting in sound/playback devices. I can only use my speakers as default devise. My headphone can only be set as default commucation device but not default devise (click set as default devise but nothing happens). Beats audio control setting doesn't seem like there is anything to switch default devises. This computer does not have realtek control. I like to be able to switch all audio output between speaker and headphone. Please share with/enlighten me how I can go about this. Thank you.
Hello @EasyEnemy, and thank you for your post.I understand that you are having some issues with the audio outputs on your computer. I am happy to help with this. On checking the support page there are not any specific drivers for Windows 10 for your computer. With that in mind there are a few things you can try. Try out the HP Support Assistant to see if it can find any other drivers that could be compatible.HP PCs - Using HP Support Assistant (Windows 10, 8, 7)HP PCs - Troubleshooting HP Support Assistant (Windows 10, 8) If not, or if any drivers it finds do not help, you can try in installing the Windows 8.1 drivers again from the support page. HP ENVY Phoenix 810-192d Desktop PC Another option would be to try installing the older drivers using compatibility mode in Windows 10. This Microsoft forum page shows several things you can try: How to: Install and Update drivers in Windows 10. When I had windows 7 I could go to my internet browsing user (my only user with internet access) and navigate to the Pandora Music Webpage (or youtube or whatever) and start streaming music, and when I switched to my other user that did not have internet access for security reasons (not log off, just switch user) I could still hear the music.
Now that I've upgraded to windows 10 the music turns off when I switch users. Any ideas how I can get my internet streaming audio to continue to play when I switch to a user that doesn't have internet permissions?
Unfortunately, I don't think there's a way to fix this. Honestly, it seems like a bug that they fixed in 10 (or even in 8/8.1)0 more replies
I have noticed that the Dolby Audio application keeps switching back to the "Voice" preset regardless of what I do or how many times I try to change it. I have opened up the Dolby Audio app itself and changed to a different preset as well as using the Lenovo Settings app to set the "Dynamic" preset as my default, but after some time I find that the settings will always get reverted back to "Voice" again. In addition to these steps I have also tried updating my audio drivers to the most recent version, but this actually caused the Dolyb Audio app to be completely removed from my machine only to be brought back by first performing a System Restore and then performing a "Repair" operation from the "Uninstall or Change A Program" screen.I finally located the original Dolby Audio X2 Windows API SDK and Dolby Audio X2 Windows APP installation media (located at "C:\Program Files (x86)\Realtek\Audio\DAX2", not contained in the "LENOVO" hard drive partition which contains all other system drivers) and was able to update my driver and re-install the Dolby software to get it operational again, but the problem of switching profiles persists. How do I prevent this profile switching, or is it possible to configure the Dolby Audio application to select a profile based on the application that is running? I find having to manually switch my sound profile back to the "Dynamic" preset a pain.More replies
Well, I've finally hit the brick wall with this latest barrage of crashes and BSODs. When I wake up or return from anything over a half hour or so, my computer is almost always attempting to reboot from a crash, quite unsuccessfully. When I switch from speakers to headphones, there's a very strong chance I'll BSOD within minutes. And, just for fun, I'll get a random crash from time to time when browsing the ol' internet or something similarly mundane. The BSOD from idle doesn't show a code, but the audio BSOD seemed to direct me to a driver conflict. I'm no expert, by any means, so I thought I'd see what you guys thought.
I friend built this rig for me, and it was working fine up until I had to replace the last hard-drive. Now, it has a mind of it's own. I tried updating all my drivers after reading another thread about a similar issue. I also tried deleting and re-downloading a few drivers that seemed to be giving people with similar issues some grief. So far, nothing is sticking.
The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.
Follow it: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.
Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.
Dont run any disc cleanup tool before you upload another zip.
Everytime I connect or disconnect a USB device my default audio device changes to a different device.. anyway to prevent disable this from happening.. I use USB mostly to charge my smartphone and only occasionally to transfer files but it is an annoyance as not only I have to change the default device but have to restart flashplayer or videos on media players because it can't recover from change.
