critical setup file damaged

Q: critical setup file damaged

Hi,
I've got a Toshiba Satellite under Vista with blue screen problems.
It doesn't work under normal mode, Error = STOP : 0x0000007F
only works under safe mode.

I've tried quite a few things but they didn't work. Ultimately, it seems that :
the critical startup file C:\windows\system32\drivers\axeth.sys is damaged.

what can I do?
thank you in advance for your help.

----
see attached file also

I couldn't run the system health report. Apparently RACAgent is "disabled" (I'm trying to translate from French) and so non data and no reports possible.

For the rest:
Vista . . .
- x86 (32-bit)
- the original installed OS on the system : yes
- an OEM
- OEM = came pre-installed on system

- What is the age of system (hardware)? 3 yrs
- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) same age / no

Hi. I'm new here. Am hoping someone can help me with my infected computer.First off; I have Windows Vista, Dell Dimension, McAfee Antivirus. My McAfee alerted me to a found trojan and said it got rid of it. Shortly after I started having computer issues and the following message came up:Critical error damaged hard drive clusters detected?? Private data is at risk!!Then it says there is no disc space.I went to another computer to try to find some answers. It was suggested to run Dell Diagnostics and I did that, going through the memory and all hard drives. It came up with no problems. I then went to Device Manager and started looking into that when the error messages came up again.Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

I purchased Bit Defender Internet Security 2008, installed and updated. Once running I found that it had deleted a VPN PPtP connection that I had installed in Vista Home ultimate. I've tried since, with the firewall on and off to set the vpn up again and cannot get Vista to do so. I go through the Wizard and when I try to connect it immediately tells me to "try again". If I choose to it just sits there trying to connect and never does. Diagnose doesn't start when the button is pushed and set up and connect later doesn't work either. Vista does not set up the new VPN PPtP connection, no matter what method I've tried.
BD hasn't been much help so far and I'm wondering if others have had this problem and if yes, what did you do to correct. I can't seem to find a utility to fix the Set up a connection wizard.

Make sure the drive is switched on and properly connected to your computer. If the disk is a SCSI disk, make sure your SCSI devives are properly terminated. Consult your computer manual or SCSI adapter documentation for more information.

Hi, I reformatted my hd the other day and now I get this error message when I boot up and try to install windows xp. After this it just says press eneter to continue and takes you back to veiw c: and unpartitioned space. I've tried both quick and the normal format but they both end in the same result.

I don't think my hd is damaged as when I go into my BIOS it still shows up and I've even checked to make sure it's all connected and such.

The computer has a samsung HD161hj 160gig.

Any help/sugguestions would be great.

I am trying to install Windows XP Home SP2 onto a brand new IDE hard drive but it gave me an error when trying to install it.

I then tried to format the drive (using the Windows XP disc) but after sitting through the entire format process it gives me the following error....
Code:
Setup was unable to format the partition. The disk may be damaged.

Make sure the drive is switched on and properly connected to your computer. If the disk is a SCSI disk, make sure your scsi devices are properly terminated. Consult your computer manual or scsi adapter documentation for more information.

You must select a different partition for windows XP.
To continue, Press ENTER"
There is only 1 drive to choose from when I run the XP setup disc, here is what is displayed on the screen....

Code:
190780 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]

C: Partition1 [Unknown] 190782 MB < 190782 MB free >
I have tried doing a quick NTFS format and a normal NTFS format but they all result in the same error message above.

Any ideas or things that I should try?

Hi all

I recently installed a new ssd into my laptop and installed a fresh installation of windows 10 onto it. When it started up after the install and reached the screen where you setup a user and password the computer froze and I got the message "Critical Process Died". It then did its thing collecting info and restarted and I managed to get into windows. I thought it may have fixed it but then when I started to load up files and software I kept getting the error screen again.

Now I have done another fresh install on windows on the drive and the same thing happened, Right at the user setup screen the error message appeared again.

I have checked the ssd with sfc scannow but it didn't find any errors.

Could someone help me out as I need the laptop for work on Monday!

Thanks in advance

Hi everybody.
I got dell latitude d800 laptop with dead display and without os (supposed to be XP, sticker is intact).
Hunting for affordable good shape lcd panel will take a while so I made unattended cd with nlite and installed XP but external monitor didn't fire up
I checked the installation with live CD and it looks like complete install so I got an idea that the install is lacking dell drivers particularly video driver (nvidia fx 5200 go card).
Even more: it's possibly lacking any video driver 'cause native display was disconnected.
So I have to somehow inject video driver and force setup to install it. Then XP must fire up external monitor and then I can update all the drivers.
I read about winnt.sif and $OEM$/Drivers directory but that all about "naked" drivers like .sys .cat .inf ... but the drivers I got from dell have also .dll .exe and other files but nvidia driver even has its own setup.exe.
How to make XP setup to install such drivers during unattended setup?

Hello everyone
I'm having a problem with opening a recording from my phone. The mp3 format file got corrupted because while recording the I absentmindedly swiched off the phone :-( and NO software on this planet is able to open it. I've tried mp3val ,mp3diag mp3 direct cut, audiocity and a bunch of other http://www.free-codecs.com/download/MP3_Repair_Tool.htm

http://www.mp3toolkit.com/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/292712/mp3-files-in-unknown-file-format/
All of these were not even cabable of opening the file not to mention fix it. Converting the mp3 to different format was imposible as well.
The size in MB and lenth of the mp3 file is correct, so there must be somethig in there to recover I guess .since the damage was caused by incorrent finishing of the record.
ANY sugestions what else can I do or where to seek help :-) :-)

I am sorry if this has been answered before, but I have been searching the internet for a fix for hours. I am willing to offer any and all assistance required to help fix this problem!

My dad has recently passed his laptop to me in a fit of frustration and asked me to fix it. He complained of many viruses and spyware from his step daughters, and started formatting the computer in a fit.

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A 105 and I am trying to install Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 from an OEM disk. I have followed the instructions for installing Windows XP when booting from a disk, up until the quick format in NTFS format. I get the following error message:

Setup is unable to format the partition the disk may be damaged.

It goes on to say something about a SCSI drive, but I don't think the laptop has one.

How do I get this to format and install? Help!

A:Help! "Setup is unable to format the partition and the disk may be damaged"

Is the OEM disc for this particular computer? If lets say, you are trying to install XP onto an HP computer with a Dell OEM disc, it will not work as there are specific drivers embeded in the disc for that particular machine. Try formatting with a 3rd party boot disc, like Partition Magic or Dpart etc and not doing a Quick Format. There could be bad sectors on the disc that only a full format will fix.

Hello Kruger, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You can use a clean copy of the batmeter.dll.mui file from my system in the ZIP download below to replace your copy with.

You will need to take ownership and allow your user account full permission of your C:\Windows\System32\batmeter.dll.mui file first (Option Two in Method Two in the tutorial below for how), then copy and paste the new downloaded copy at that location to replace it.

Take Ownership of file

Hope this helps,

Because I wrote on the non data side with permanent marker 3 years ago, hairline marks have appeared on the data side where the writing is.

Obviously there are some corrupt sectors. I have tried ISO Buster, but the file it produces is not readable with Pinnacle Studio. Although Power DVD will play some of it ?

Is there a method to recover this file so I can read it again with Pinnacle Studio ?

I defragged my Win XP Media PC a few days ago and then I noticed a clicking noise coming from the hard drive, I called PC servicecall (managed to find a freephone number!!!!) and the chap suggested I do a scandisk, he said to call back with the diagnosis later.

After the PC did two scandisks I managed to stop it when it was about to do a 3rd, I rebooted the PC and it loaded with no 'start' button or clock on the taskbar, so I rebooted. Then I got a message saying 'it can't load as a file was missing or corrupt windows/system32/configuration/system' it said to put in the original CD and type 'r' to repair.

Well the PC didn't come with any CD's and I only have one that I made after I'd had the PC for a month - a recovery disk.

So I called PC Servicecall back and told the guy what happened and I've got another harddrive arriving tomorrow - trouble is I need to get the info from my hard drive before I send it back to them.

I've looked at MS support site and there's options to do a manual repair (I'll copy and paste info here)
Method 1: Replace the SYSTEM Hive
Method 2: Restore the SYSTEM File from the SYSTEM.ALT Backup File
Method 3: Reduce the Size of the SYSTEM File
Method 4: Restore the SYSTEM Hive from Backup

Hey all, I dropped my hard drive with a lot of .mov footage on it and thus sent it to a data recovery company to retrieve everything. After getting it back, most of footage was good, but a few files don't open in quicktime(or any program... it just says, 'this is not a movie file.') Is there any file recovery businesses around? or software that I can try?
thanks

I need to know where and what type of drivers I need for this problem CD damaged file needs drives see picture

A:damaged file need drives

That appears to be a very old CD ROM.

It could need the motherboard drivers, or possibly its that old that its one that is supplied from a soundcard interface, in which case it needs the sound card drivers.

You really would have to give us a clue as the what the PC hardware is though.

Back at Christmas of 2002 I transfered all my files with a intellimover program. I found these files while clicking the Tools button on my browser window, Internet Options from there and then View Objects. The first thing in this downloaded list is a filed listed as
{9F1C11AA-197B-4942-BA54-47A8489BB47F} and it says that it is damaged. It also has a date on it that is before my transfere. This file came from a HP Windows98 computer to my now Dell XP WIndows. It's only 4kb. It also says it was accessed today for some reason. Is my computer really using this file?

Is this a file I need. I think its a windows update thing but now sure. Thank you for any help.

Sorry to hear that you lost some files, but before you do any upgrades or clean installs you should always backup your important files.

Could you see the icons of the spreedsheets???

If you could there is still hope of recovering your files. But if you unistall Xp you will lose everything.

Hi,

I have an important file, created in Word 97, that I need to use. I saved it and had been opening it easily to work on it but all of a sudden it seems I cannot open it. I cannot find it anywhere except in the previously opened list when I open Word, but when I click on it there to open it I get the messages "this file cannot be found" or "the directory name is not valid". When I search for the file it comes up but when I try to open it I get the message again "this file cannot be found". I would be so so grateful to anyone who can help me open this file, recover it, repair it or whatever I need to do in order to have it back! I am sure I have not deleted the file and I am using Windows 7.

Thank you in advance,

Subio

I think your only chance would be to use Winrar's own repair tool under tools in the menu bar.

Running Windows 2000 with service pack 4 and 48-bit addressing enabled on a P4 system with a 300-Gigabyte hard disk.

Drive C: FAT32, 14.6 Gigs
Drive D: FAT32, 4.4 Gigs
Drive E: NTFS, 260 Gigs

History: This drive C was originally set up using a Windows 98 boot disk and the Windows 98 FDisk and Format commands. Windows 2000 was then installed on that partition, 48-bit addressing was then enabled and the two logical drives, D & E, were then set up.

OS runs fine and all drives are functioning without error. I want to delete the current installation of Windows and do a clean, new installation. I attempted to reinstall Windows 2000 and it says that all three of my partitions are "UNFORMATTED OR DAMAGED" so I aborted the installation and returned to my running copy of Windows 2000.

Is there a work-around for this? I would like to be able to set up Windows 2000 again without losing the information on the partitions.

A:Adobe PDF file is damaged. How can it be fixed

If the manual is for a piece of equipment you can download it again from the manufacturer's website. If it's an "in house" compiled manual (eg training etc) that is damaged, there's a free online repair utility here: http://www.pdfaid.com/repair-pdf-fi...if that doesn't work, there are many more PDF repair softwares that you will find with a search engine, for example this is what Google Search found:https://www.google.com/search?q=rep...Be aware that many of them you have to pay for.If you had used a search engine in the first place, there would have been no need for you to submit your post.message edited by phil22

Intermittently when we open a pdf in the browser in one of our main Enterprise applications, we get the error "The file is damaged and could not be repaired."

Downloading and opening always works (however for our system this is a less than acceptable workaround).

The only common denominator we can find is that this is only happening in IE6 (no matter what version of adobe reader). IE7 always opens the pdfs fine, regardless of the reader version.

I've seen this mentioned all of the place, and it often mentions that it's some sort of problem with the pdf and that reader 8 handles it better.

Any solutions yet?

A:Everytime i click on a file on my pc or an USB it says it's damaged!

That looks like it may actually be a message from mcaffee which is not known to be a reliable Malware tool.

First thing I would suggest is BACK UP ALL YOUR IRREPLACEABLE DATA, (photos, documents Music, Video Etc), so if things get worse at least you have that to fall back on.

Next thing is to download MalwareBytes Free and run a full deep scan of your complete system and report back when this shows your system is clear (may take more than one operation)

Note the Free Version is sufficient for these tests - No need to click BUY

I am working on a Windows XP Home edition system which frequently freezes immediatelt after startup.
On booting I get the meesage invalid boot.ini file booting from C:\windows
The sytem then boots up OK but intermittantly freezes when windows has loaded.

When I look at the boot.ini file it is 0kb and empty.
Using the results from other posts I have copied the existing file to another folder for safety then created a new boot.ini file as follows...

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS

but when I then try to boot up the system goes into a loop of restarting before windows loads
When I replace the old file it goes back to the error message followed by a successful boot.

Would this problem be the cause of the freezing as well as the error message?

Not sure if this is the right seciton but it is a general issue so, ill go for it. Basically, i was using a "screen recording software" called debut video capture, to record me doing a series of tutorials and when on webcam, was showing screen to screen with the software as sort of like a "live" tutorial with my friend for something in photoshop, when all of a sudden, the computer crashed with a BSOD of logitech webcam controller driver crashing, i have since repaired that, but i now two of my tutorials (as this happened twice) and now corrupted .AVI files.

One is entitled "untitled 106.avi" as that is how debut video capture names the files, so basically it was recording, computer crashed, a file of 165mb and 35mb are both corrupt but i care more about the larger one as it was 6 minutes long, VLC player called it a "undf" file (undefined video?) and ive tried countless recovery tools only to have no luck.

I dont care for the audio i only really want the video.

So my question is, does anyone know how or anyway i can recover the video from this file with software or otherwise? ther is definately physical data as just recovering up to the point of crash would be nice but alas, ive not found a way so i come here to see if i have missed anything?

Any help would be great! thanks :)

A:Recovering a damaged/corrupted AVI file?

Hi Lithium

I think your best bet is to simply create the videos again. Even if you were able to save a certain percentage of the video, it would be quite a bit more trouble to then have to patch together the remnants with newly captured fresh video. If the tutorials were thirty or forty minutes, that might be different.

Best of luck

I am concerned that my PC may have picked up a worm (or other unknown issue) from someone else's infected machine I am working on.

Not sure if the .jpg header corruption is caused by virus or malfunctioning hardware.

Perhaps this a piece of cryptographic malware?

symptoms currently are: .jpg file headers (and ONLY .jpg) randomly getting corrupted resulting in the message "Can't read file header !  unknown file format, empty file or file not found".

Not ALL .jpg files are affected - mostly picture files created by the user via their personal devices
Commercial images do not seem to be as affected. (album covers, downloaded images, cover art, software file images).
Other image file-types are not affected (gif, bmp, jpeg, etc).
There is sufficient data in the files, so it's not just a shortcut with the data on an unknown or disconnected drive.
Also, this seems date sensitive - pics affected are dated 3-13-2013 and newer.

I have tried:  used different viewers, renamed file extension, opened in notepad attempted to edit header, take ownership, system restore, forensic software to revive deleted temp files, changed computer clock settings to before the date and time of problem file creation, checked hidden file settings (none are ever hidden on my machines but I doulble checked - all good)

Sometimes I'll get the error: file is damaged and cannot be repaired, when I try to view this pdf: http://lacnyc.org/profdev/Spring09_Catalog.pdf

I've cleared out my cache and temp files and tested in IE7 and Firefox. It seems to be random when I can view the PDF or receive the damaged file error. I've had 2 coworkers also try to view the PDF from the above URL in IE7 and Firefox and both using Adobe Acrobat 7. One person was able to view the PDF without errors in both browsers (however, upon refreshing the damaged file error occurred) while the other person received a blank page on both browsers and no errors. After installing some updates, the person received the damaged file error. I also checked with another person who used IE7 and Adobe Reader 8 and received the damaged file error.

I have yet to receive errors when I open the PDF from my desktop using Adobe Acrobat 7.

This problem seems to have started when the site was moved to a new server. The file is stored as binary data in a MySQL database. The old server had MySQL 4.0 on Windows 2000. The new server has MySQL 4.1 on Windows 2003. I copied the database from the older server to the new server. And we even deleted the binary data for the PDF and "uploaded" a new one. The file is 5MB and seemingly there are no problems with view PDFs that are smaller in size.

I post all this detail hoping someone would have some suggestions. I have yet to find a common thread as to why viewing the PDF ... Read more

What OS are you running? Sounds like XP, I'm guessing.

Firstly, I'd run a disk check:
Start -> Run... -> type "cmd" (without quotes) -> Press Enter -> type in the following:
chkdsk C: /f /r
Press Enter and it will say it cannot lock the current drive and to run on next reboot. Type Y and hit Enter -> Reboot your computer and let it run through the check (it may take some time, depending on how big your HDD is).

If that doesn't fix it, then try the suggestion here (the post where he talks about creating a new Identity / importing your previous data):

I have an Excel 2007 file saved in xlsl extension format on an external 32 Gig flash drive but absolutely nothing will open it.

I have tried renaming the extension to xls and used older versions of Excel (2003) but no matter what I do, I still get the message that the file is unopenable!

I know there is available software that professes to do this but for one file I don't feel like forking out $100 odd bucks to get it back!

The problem arose after I installed a new HDD, reinstalled MS Office 2007 and from that moment on it refused to look at the file whereas the previous Excel 07 on the old HDD had no problems whatsoever.

Hi guys, after about a 6 weeks of struggling with this problem and exhausting about every option I can think of or recommendation I can Google, this is just about my last shot at trying to retrieve my files from this HDD.

Maxtor 6Y120M0 120GB SATA

Basically, about 6 weeks ago I had what I *think* was a low power situation while I was asleep. It seems like it was very minor because it didn't even reset some of the clocks that usually get reset. My building seems to have "dirty" or fluctuating power on a regular basis. So, I awoke to find my powered down computer unstartable. Had I known low power was as much of a risk as surges I certainly would have used a UPS (which I have, now...).

Turns out my PSU, MB, and one of my 2 HDDs (the one with the OS) were fried. Granted, I have had many power fluctuations over the years, most using very cheap PSUs, and have never had a problem. Turns out the Antec SmartPower 500w I was using is rife with problems, and may have played a role in what happened.

I did various testing (that I'd rather not go into) to come to the conclusion that those 3 parts were toast. My HDD wasn't getting power so I did some reading/Googling after tracking down a new/old MB and installing XP SP2 on another HDD. I bought a like drive off of eBay and pulled the PCB from it, and oila, the drive was getting power and was seen in BIOS. However, it would not boot XP. I tried everything to repair it but the hard drive had issues with freezing... Read more

A:An outlook express store file may be damaged.

The recovery of the information that was lost was done with the help of the following steps:

-The list of newsgroups from each news account is re-downloaded
-Subscribed newsgroups are reset and the messages are again downloaded
-IMAP's and the newsgroup folder's synchronization options are reset
-The message rules are edited, that are capable of moving and copying of messages to the folders, other than the Inbox
-The mail folder hierarchy is recreated with the dragging of the folders into place in the Folders list. The folders list will not contain the folders, which are created for the grouping of sub-folders and which do not contain messages. These folders are to be created again

How do you recover lost/damaged files from a damaged disk (external)?

I'm not sure if its just damaged or crammed way too full but it started when I plugged it into another computer at the front along with another hard drive which I've never done at that particular computer before but I thought it would be fine since I always plug in both at the back of my own computer.
At the other computer this disk disappeared and only the other one showed up. So I plugged out the other one and tried to make it show up. It didn't and when i plugged it out "Drive H:\ needs to be formatted" showed up" I just kept trying at all the usb ports to failure.
I tried to plug it in my computer and my laptop leading to the same result.

I'm talking about a "1TB FreeAgent GoFlex Seagate", image http://www.geek.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/seagate_goflex_review_05.jpg. I took the butt part out and installed it in my computer directly. I think that's when the chkdsk utility showed up after windows started. I let it run when it started up. it finally showed up! The files still worked. but it was still almost full so I bought a new hard drive to transfer the files to and then format the old one and start clean, or so to say.

I plugged in my new hard drive and tried to transfer some files. It transferred some, but others gave me a few errors in transferring. Then I tried to transfer it to my laptop. It can't transfer directly from one external ha... Read more

Appears to be a root kit. Thank you for your help! I am out of work and trying to get a business started to support my fam, but can't do it without this computer working, so I really appreciate it. Not exactly a beginner. Can understand and follow most instructions from tech. (Have used an online tech service before. Am more familiar with my PC than the average person. I also know how to do maintenance on my PC and am familiar with the most known antivirus programs).

Blue screen after root kit, ati2dvag file damaged, plus more...

I am in safemode. I can only work briefly in full windows mode. A month ago, PC started shutting down to a blue screen, at Microsoft page it said problem with ati2dvag file. It would not let me run or install antivirus programs. In safemode from a USB, I ran Malwarebytes and Spybot and VIPRE rescue. VIPRE found a root kit. I ran Eset online scanner which found and removed a trojan.
I followed instr from a web site for replacing the damanged ati2dvag file, but it would not allow the reset.

Also, windows firewall will not allow me to set it. I followed instr online to get it working, and then it worked. But after the next blue screen shut-down, it did not work again.

All of a sudden, my Inbox items have vanished in Outlook 2007 on my Vista OS HP notebook.  I do not run MS Office, btw.  OUtlook purchased as a standalone.  The number of items in the lower left bar reflects the accurate number of items but they are not visible suddenly.  I imported the pst file into Thunderbird as a backup and - amazingly - the inbox is visible and nothing is lost.  In Outlook I am getting a damaged .pst error message but scanpst.exe runs the issue is not resolved.
Obvious solution is to use Thunderbird but it doesn't sync with Blackberry.
Any one have thoughts or suggestions?

Best Buy sold us a 1GB PC2-4200 DDR2 to upgrade our Compac Presario SR2020 NX. The sold us the computer and said this was compatible. When we installed it at boot up the message reads /Windows/system32/config/system file is corrupt or missing and we had to learn how to repair without the software, since all they sell with it is what's on the computer, no disks. The only thing I can think of is the computer has a DDR slot even though they told us according to their records it has a DDR2. They said we had to bring it in to the store for them to help so I thought I'd try here first. Any ideas? I can't read anything on the memory slots to tell if it's DDR or DDR2.

Thanks in advance.

Have completed a RECOVERY of WIN XP, and no sooner had I updated to SP-3 and IE8, this annoying error message "Couldn't find the file swflash.ocx". I checked c;\windows\system 32 and found "iuctl.dll" damaged. I also found also found the listing of the damaged file, which is a multitude of forty letters, symbols and figures. Any idea how this damaged file can be fixed?

It has me beat how this file is damaged when, I had the same problem with this annoying file before I restored the computer to original factory settings.

Have you installed Flash?

You can copy the file from your CD, if you have one. You might find a copy in the dllcache. Start > Run: dllcache

Or search your machine.

Why did you recover? The problem that caused that may be causing this. Were there any errors during recovery (if there were, recovery failed)?

Yes, My friend got the Vista Internet Security 2012 rogue virus. The only way I could attempt to get rid of it was to go into safe mode and run a portable version of Superantispyware from my flash drive because I could not install Malwarebytes. Everytime I would try to install something a box comes up asking what I want to open it with. I am assuming the rogue virus damaged Windows file association. How do i repair that so I can install programs to clean the rogue virus further? Thanks.

Some days ago I noticed I'm completely unable to access Gmail's front page from my computer, I can't even get to the Login page. Neither in Chrome, Firefox 3.6, or Internet Explorer...

My mom has an HP Mini 210-1044NR laptop. It no longer boots up right. I've tried to get the desktop screen to load in normal mode and safe mode, yet I keep getting the same error message.

It says Windows Explorer has stopped working. Windows can check online for a solution to the problem the next time you go online.

If I click close the program, it gives her a black screen and nothing happens. I cannot get to the start menu, even. Ctrl + Alt + Del brings up task manager, but it doesn't really give me much to work with.

I did have the desktop loaded at one point, but then it all froze up and shut down.

The problem details are:

Problem Event Name: InPageError
Error Status Code: c0000010
Faulting Media Type: 00000003
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.11
Locale ID: 1033

Is there any way to fix this? Maybe bring the desktop back up? Or even get to the start menu to run something and fix it? I am going crazy trying to figure out what to do. Please help!

My internet stopped working tonight, so I restarted it. When it restart it went directly to Startup Repair, it wasn't able to automatically fix anything. I've tried restarting it and even removed the hardrive and it does the same thing. I can't get past the startup repair screen. It is more or less shutdown and restart, contact the administrator or your computer provider. The "root cause" seems to be the following:

Boot critical file C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\uolbyzn.sys is corrupt

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I am running on Vista Home Basic

A:Need Help:Boot Critical File C

Hello,

This is very strange. Normally from this position we would insert the Windows CD, boot to the Recovery Console and we would send you a list of commands to copy back the file from your Vista DVD. However, I do not have this file on my working Vista Home Premium, and searching Google comes up with not a single hit. It is a bit strange for a virus, but I suppose it could be. It is not any normal System file, or any normal file of any program. It is not even showing up in manual virus removal websites. Also, have you tried Safe Mode and Last Known Good Configuration?

I was having problems with my Maple Story, so I un-installed and re-downloaded the program. However, when I tried to open the setup wizard, it gave me the error:

Error reading setup initialization file

I looked online for troubleshooting solutions, and I have so far found two options:

-Re-download because the error could be the result of a failed download that wasn't identified when the file was downloaded.

-Find and delete old files that could be stopping the file from being reaad properly.

I need help with the second solution, as in how I search for those files. Also, any other solutions for this problem would be much appreciated.

Quick background: I've been an IT admin for a major university for the past 12 years managing 300+ Windows and Mac user machines. So, this likely isn't your average network connectivity/name resolution/permissions/firewall issue.

I have an important user's Windows 7 Enterprise (32 bit) machine that cannot connect to any windows file shares (Known good ones on multiple servers). At this point I would have normally just wiped the Windows install out and reinstalled but the user apparently has had this issue for many months (Possibly since May) and hadn't noticed. This resulted in his home directory being stuck in an offline state and all of his modifications are "stuck" on this laptop.

To further complicate things, before I knew the extent of the problem, I removed it from our domain and whatever issue is plaguing this windows install also is preventing me from being able to re-add it to the domain. Therefore I cannot login as the user with the cached offline files at the moment.

Here's what works:
-DNS name resolution
-NetBIOS/WINS name resolution
-Pinging the machines with the shared volumes
-Web access

Here's what doesn't work:
-Accessing any file shares. After about 30 seconds the error says "Windows cannot access \\servername\share"
-Accessing local file shares (i.e. \\127.0.0.1\c$ ...\temp, etc.). I get the same error here.
-The network troubleshooter doesn't find any problems.

The above behavior is the same whether conne... Read more

A:Critical file sharing issue

Well, couldn't get the file share access thing worked out but I did some experimenting on another Win7 machine and figured out how to get another user's offline files back (Assuming you have admin rights).

Here's what I did:
-Disable offline files
-Navigate to c:\windows\csc
-Take ownership of the directory and all sub directories
-Assign your account full control permissions
-Copy the files you want out of there

This sounds relatively simple but I was very paranoid about messing up the files in the process. Windows XP used to keep offline files in some sort of convaluted/compressed format that was not really usable on its own. Apparently they changed this is Win 7 and that's a good thing.
