Q: "msdt" (microsoft Diagnostic Tool)

Anybody know how/where to uninstall Microsoft Diagnostic TOOL (MSDT). Got on their site last night as they offer free help on SP1 and inadvertently clicked yes when I meant to click no when asked if I wanted to download the tool; comes with ActiveX too. Now, I can't find any uninstaller for it, anywhere.

Hi, BigFeat, and welcome to the forums.

Before I suggest something as drastic as back up your files and format and reinstall, I want to see if anyone else has a solution to this problem that is non destructive.

However, I have a feeling this will happen again - unless, of course, there was a power failure during the night...which has just gotten me thinking.

Since you can use the command prompt, re-initiate the installation via the command prompt and see if it will let you start / pick up / finish from before....

Could anyone explain the differences to me.
Also, does anyone know a good piece of virus toolkit that can actually remove them as well as prevent them?

T.I.A.

A:Difference between a "virus removal tool" and a "patch"?

A virus removal tool removes the virus from your computer meaning that the file is already on your system and running, so it stops it from running and removes the file. A patch however is used to prevent bad things from being installed, usually released when big worms hit, like SoBig, MSBlast, CodeRED...etc...So patches are to prevent and removal tools are to remove files already installed.

I am hoping that someone can help me with what may be a complex question.

I have a spreadsheet, similar to the demonstration file I have attached. In it, there are a range of columns. One set of columns (A - D), shows a list of numbers that are references to items in a store, and it also shows their location in the store, so it acts as a floor-plan. The next column (E) lists those items again to show the dollar amount that those items have produced in total sales (F).

So, what I'd like to do is to add a conditional formatting to show me the "cold" and "hot" spots on the floor-plan so I can see where sales are most concentrated. I would assume that this would be done with a colour scale (using the range of values in column F to work itself out)?

Either way, the figures in column F would change weekly, so the relevant cells in columns A - D would need to automatically change when they're matching cells in column E - F change.

I hope this makes sense, as it's difficult to explain, but any help that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

I ran windows update diagnostic because my Windows Update was failing to update my PC over the past several months. I downloaded the diagnostic from go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=231149

Two major errors were not fixed that sound serious.
"Service registration is missing or corrupt"
and, "Windows update error 0x80070057 (2016-07-30-7-06-01P)"

The rest were fixed, all the rest being "Problem installing recent update." I don't take that to mean that the intended updates were actually installed.

Okay before I get into it this started a while back
Since then an app I was trying trashed windows and I formatted same deal

So I really don't see any spyware keyloggers etc as being involved.
But just in case I have scanned clean with several scanners.

Here goes my attempt at an explanation...
Basically out of nowhere my laptops keyboard will go into what I'll describe as a diagnostic mode for lack of a better term.
Using my keyboard will simply repeat this pattern, "1234567890-=qwertyuiop[]asdfghjkl;'`\zxcvbnm,./-+\"

For example if I type "welcome" I would get "1234567".
If I come back a few minutes later and type it again I'd get "890-=qw"
Once I type enough to get to the end of that pattern it starts again.

However IE seems to be somehow involved but I can't tell you specifically how really. But in this case I launched a new IE window and it stopped.

I know it's not much to go on I've done my best to try and explain.
If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Kenny

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Hi guys, first off I haven't been here for help in years literally this was the first place I thought of because a few years ago many generous people helped me solve my problem, this place is awesome. Please pardon me as I am only decently literate with computers but try my best.

Ok I am trying to solve an annoying problem for my parent's computer. My dad was typing a normal document in Microsoft Word (OS is XP with System Pack 2, and it is Word 2002) and he said that just yesterday for the first time, after typing for maybe a half hour, a window would pop up with a "runtime error" and it would freeze untill he clicked ok on it, and it would then shut down loosing all his work that he didn't save.

So I got on the computer and opened Microsoft Word, and was able to duplicate the problem time after time but not every single time. When I simply open word, then click to close Word, the box appears, and he verified it is the same box he saw. It says exactly as follows, no more, no less, and every time reads the same -

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program:C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 10\WINWORD.EXE
abnormal program termination

So I tried to research it, and came across a fix on Microsoft's support site saying remove something called COM Add-ins. I did so by following each step removing the one COM add in i found, and it did not resolve the problem at all. It still errors out. SO I grabbed the master disk and un... Read more

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?

Hi there - me again! I don't know if you can help me out with another problem...

I often see on web pages the option to upload something from your own pc onto the web site - I've seen sites asking for CVs other for photos (jpgs) etc. You click a button that says "Browse" and it takes you to explorer and you select the file you want, click open and it inserts the file into the page you were using (e-bay pictures for example).

I have an excel spreadsheet that has a photos section and I would like to use the same insert/upload set up as I described above.

Can I do this in excel and if so how? I can figure out how to tell the button to load the same picture every time but not how to open the "open file" window.

Thank you very much

Hello, my system is affected with the "Security Tool" malware, which prevents installation of anti-malware softwares such as malbytes anti-malware.
It has created a random directory in All Users\Application Data and further prevents from running any software.

I can run in safe mode, and delete that directory, but it comes up again. Cant install, MBAM still in safe mode. Infact MalwareBytes installs perfectly, but then when I load it up, a dialog box will appear (entitled "Setup"): Unable to execute file.. (directories) CreateProcces failed; code 2. The system cannot find file specified (the file specified being "mbam.exe").

I have tried to rename the setup, no avail.

I am running off of Windows XP.

I am attaching logs from DDS and GMER.

Hi,

You didn't mention that you've tried to run ComboFix. Please post its report if any was generated.

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)
Note: If the window shows a message that says Error deleting file, please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this site and don't post on these vary often as usually most of my queries have already been experienced before and explained when searching hard enough. However, i have failed to get round this issue and the BSOD is a bit beyond me...
Like i said in the title it seems to be usually when using Catia's DSLicMgt licence tool. However, it has happened when performing other small tasks, so not sure how much use that is. also when using Matlab and Simulink it has happened.

I have used the DM Log Collector and attached all the files which were placed on my desktop after running the .exe

if anyone could help i would appreciate it. also i left it running most of the day doing a memtest86+, as i was out of my office and returned to find it showing no problems at all, did this as it was suggested in someones post on a different site. Also i have scanned with malwarebytes, kaspersky which both found no issues and done windows disk error-checking and all came back fine.
also... Windows updates are all upto date.

Cheers,
Mike Apicella

Since yesterday when I try to launch several applications they don't work and show "... has stopped working" error message. They had been working perfectly before. I didn't change or install anything. They just stopped working.

So far I found these apps not working:
DS3_Tool.exe
LANoirelauncher.exe
FIFA13Demo.exe
Xbox 360 Controller Manager.exe

I reinstalled every aplication several times, also reinstalled .NET Framework, graphics drivers, scanned whole pc with KIS 2013, CCleaner, jv16 Power Tools and performed a SFC Scan. Didn't help.

I can't also install SF Diagnostic Tool. The following error message appers:
"This tool will collect the logs files required to troub has stopped working"

Does anyone know how can I fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks & Greetings.

To be honest, I just downloaded Windows Update Readiness Tool because my "Turn Windows Feature On or Off" shows up blank every time I open it just like the picture attached.

So, I researched that the way to fix it is by installing Windows Update Readiness Tool, and so, I did. But, when I try to install, it LITERALLY "fails" to do so (as seen on the other pic) . Can anyone help me resolve this problem? I want a concrete answer with steps for me to follow. I don't care however complicated those steps may be, as long as they definitely fix the issue.

Thanks to all who help

I am using Windows XP on a Dell Laptop, with Norton Anti-Virus running automatic daily scans, always to the latest Virus definition release/level.

Yesterday (Sept 29) it detected more than 200 infected files. Norton's attempted "Clean" action failed so it took the next action and deleted the infected files. The Filenames that the Norton program deleted were:

a) A0008700.exe (thru) A0008791.exe
b) A000861.exe (thru) A0008681.exe
c) C:\WINDOWS\System32 and about ten with similar names

Does anyone know how my computer may be affected by the deletion of such files, especially if I lose anymore? The Virus name is [email protected] Also, what's the best way to get rid of that Virus?

I owned Windows 10 PRO, which is installed on my laptop right now.

I want to reinstall Windows 10 on my laptop (including DISKPART format) from bootable USB media, so I downloaded the Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's site.

But when i'm getting to the part of choosing language, edition and architecture - In 'edition' there are only "Windows 10" and "Windows 10 N" options. No option for PRO edition.

I remember few month ago when I used the tool - there was option for PRO edition.
So my question is - If i'm making a bootable USB with "Windows 10" edition, and install windows from it after full format:

- Will my license (PRO edition) be automatically activated? Without issues or entering a product key? (I don't have one for WIN10 because I've upgraded from 8.1.. Few months ago It activated my windows automatically when I've installed from bootable USB after format..)

- Will I get all the PRO features automatically?

A:Why there's no "PRO" eddition option in Windows Media Creation Tool?

The ISO contains home and Pro.

If you had 8.1 Pro then it will find this key in the BIOS and install 10 Pro automatically. You can skip entering the key if it asks you and it will activate automatically.

If you had 8.1 Home then (if it finds this key in BIOS) it will install 10 home. If it finds no key in BIOS (if you had 7 originally before 8.1 for example) it will ask you what you want to install.

What OS version(s) did you have in the past on this PC (including when you bought it). Did you buy it with 8.1 Pro?

You can also run Showkey - Windows 10 Forums before you start to see what keys it can find (it will show any original key as well as the generic 10 Pro one which ends 3V66T).

Hi everyone!

Yesterday my HP laptop (Windows 7) started getting BSOD with various types of errors (mostly "STOP: 0x00000F4", "STOP: 0x0000007A", "c00021a" and one "missing %hs, c0000135"). Most of the time it restarts without any issues and works fine right after the BSOD and then an hour or two later I get a BSOD again.

I have tried restoring to Last Known Good Configuration, startup repair, hard disk check, virus scans and I also uninstalled any recently added programs I could think of and cleared up more than 50% of my hard disk space. None of these seem to have helped and I still get BSOD regularly.

I have attached the folder from the SF Diagnostic Tool and would appreciate any advice!
Thank you!

Hello guys, the last week I've been strugling with these nasty BSODs. At first I thought it was my HDDs as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier as well due to their somewhat long years of service. However, I've recently reformated my computer and installed W7 on a brand new Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn't.

I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this forum and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm somewhat desperate, as I need my computer working for both work, school and amusement.

I've been trying to run Memtest in order to test my memory but without any results. I'm also currently running on only on 4GB chip instead of two, to see if the problem still exists. Also, without any results.

This is the second time I'm writing this thread btw, I was just about to post it and my PC crashed.

Here is my two logs + dxdiag (last crash didn't generate a log oddly enough).

Here is additional hardware/gear that I use:

Razer Megalodon 7.1 Headset
Razer Naga
Logitech G19
Logitech C920 (Webcam)
Corsair 750W PSU

My temperatures are also good. Both CPU and MB idles at around ~25. GPU's all good too. I'm also using a Corsair 650D chassi with dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly and I also did exactly this 2 days ago when I reinstalled the pc.

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)
Enable Boot Logging Enable Low-Resolution Video Debugging MOde Disable automatic restart on system failure Disable Driver Signature Enforcement Display Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver
Start Windows Normally
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned above. The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere.

Ok so I opened up the .msstyles file (using Restorator) located in the theme folder of this VS. I went into the images directory and located what seems to be the images used for the buttons. Intuitively, it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones (perhaps from another visual style) and it should change them. However, would this actually work? Could the theme get messed up in some other way (like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller)? I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy.

But I did run into another problem. For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory. Where else would they be?

This is a very wierd problem that occurs whenever I open up the "Options" window from the "Tools" menu. After I open the window, if I simply click the "OK" or "Cancel" button, then I won't be able to navigate anymore. I don't even have to make any changes, I can simply open the window, click "open" or "cancel", and I get the problem.

Can this be a CSS bug?

It only occurs in IE (6.0) for windows.
It doesn't occur in firefox, netscape, safari (mac), firefox (for mac), or IE for mac.

A:Opening "Tool >> Options" causes IE to stop navigating

Hi and welcome to TSF

Can you get as far as 'delete cookies and temporary files' followed by 'Reset Websettings' on the Programs tab?

With your XP CD in a drive go to Start>Run and type sfc /scannow>Enter - this will reinstate any lost or damaged IE files.

Have you run some online AV/Malware scans to cross check your security status? - http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

I would suggest running this issue past one of the security specialists on the HJT board to see if it rings any bells for them:-
http://www.techsupportforum.com/showthread.php?t=15968

If you need to post a HJT log please be sure to use the HJT Help board as otherwise a response may be delayed.

Several days ago I noticed that after searching on Google and clicking one of the links, I wouldn't go to the link I clicked, but instead I was redirected to a random advertising site. Sometimes if I clicked the Back button and clicked the link again, it would go to the proper site. Other times if I did the search again, and clicked the link again, I would go to the intended site.

Yesterday the Security Tool monster reared its ugly head. Windows pop up; my desktop is black, and I cannot open programs, including Malwarebytes and Hijack This Log (I was able to open HJT and run a log (posted below) after I booted in Safe Mode. I can connect to the internet, but sometimes I get the blue screen or my computer shuts down and restarts on its own. Of course, every few minutes the Security Tool windows pop up.

Thanks in advance for help.

Oops, I cannot open the HJT log to copy and paste it here; I'm going to attempt to attach it instead. I think I did it....

The issue is a Malware/Virus Program that is on my Wife's laptop. At startup, the virus shuts down all other programs except the Operating System. The Virus program says the computer is infected, The Virus Program sends the user to a screen to put in Payment information to buy the fake program. This Virus makes the background turn blue and also there are 1's and 0's in the background too.

Scans and attachments are included. I do have a recovery/reboot disk available if needed.

I was using the hide update tool from MS; https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930 - Its great and works as it should - scanning available updates.

But; I can hide updates that seems very nice, like lots of Intel drivers and other nice to haves. The thing is I can hide them, IE - stop them from being fetched in the main update tool - but the main update tool shows no updates are available, I'm fully updated it seems :|

And it annoys me. I'd like those updates!

My desktop (windows xp) has a handy little feature that I downloaded from WIndows that allows me to simply right click an image and resize it. Usually I make it smaller. Makes it so easy for sending gobs of pictures to my friends in emails.

I can't seem to find a simple way to do this in Vista, nor a place to download the tool. Any other simple options?

Yeah, I got infected with it too. Except I tried doing most of it myself and I think I kinda screwed up doing so. I ran AVG and Malwarebytes and erased it, but now things are getting even more frustrating as I can't open programs without running it as an administrator. I can't even run the task manager without some dumb error message popping up saying that the "application cannot be found." Almost all of the simple programs like iTunes or Firefox tell me that the extension .exe doesn't know what program to use to run it. Halp?

So I have this "Security Tool" that has downloaded itself onto my computer and I cannot get it off. It keeps giving me pop ups as to whats "wrong" with my computer. Along with that my Symmantic antivirus keeps finding viruses that I can't seem to get rid of either. They are Packed.Generic.258, Infostealer, and Backdoor.DMSpammer. File names for the last two show up as qtplugin.exe and rundl22.exe. And on top of it all my background is completely blacked out and I cannot get to my icons (or see them for that matter), the only things I can see is my menu bar and the start button. I've tried using system restore with no luck. symmantic antivirus with no luck, ad-aware with no luck, winfix and cleanup with no luck. I'd ask someone to investigate this "Customer Protection Tool" I've installed off http://www.netiba.com and it's now arousing my suspicions.

I've originally heard about it in an email apparently from Stormpay.com, where I hold an account (which I've never used). Stormpay said it was now certified by NetIBA and I was invited to download NetIBA's tool that would sit in the Taskbar tray and alert me for every site I visited in Internet Explorer that wasn't registered with them. Of course, I've found Stormpay did appear to have registered with them as a genuine financial organisation site, as a NetIBA baloon message showed.

The problem is that I don't know what this tool actually does it, and as I can't find references to NetIBA anywhere in the Internet (using Google), I think it may be a malicious tool that's actually being published under a new name. I did run SpyBot, Ad-Aware and SpywareBlaster but none of them see it. Another thing that makes me wonder is that a file called Setup.log in the folder where I've installed this thing is garbled (it isn't text) and I wonder why would any sane application want to do that. The main executable, NetIBA.exe, shows as 1220608 bytes in size, apparently created on 2/Mar/05 at 14:11:26, but when I see its properties in Windows I don't see a Version panel, which arouses my suspicions still more.

I hope someone can install this application (carefully) and try a... Read more

Hello All,

I wonder if there is someone who might be able to solve a recent problem I got with the Snipping Tool application (ST).

ST was working perfect until very recently and then it suddenly started giving my problems; everytime I tried to save an image I kept getting this error (See picture).

I've tried several things to fix this issue such as running DLL-Fixer (initially a thought it was a .dll issue), running Malwarebytes, HitmanPro, and a full scan with Norton IS-2014 and Eset Online Scanner. I found nothing, or at least nothing serious.

Afterwards, I performed a Clean Boot and checked applications in both *services* and *startup* to see if there was a conflict with the ST. I noticed something odd with one of the applications (on startup) called ADM Hydra Vision Desktop Manager (AHV): I realized that was able to get proper functionality of the ST after unchecking AHV and rebooting again... So, I thought that I had isolated the problem. Consequently, I decided to let AHV uncheck from the start up list (using System Configuration) and rebooted again, but after a while the problem resumed once more.

Any ideas?

This is a very wierd problem that occurs whenever I open up the "Options" window from the "Tools" menu. After I open the window, if I simply click the "OK" or "Cancel" button, then I won't be able to navigate anymore. I don't even have to make any changes, I can simply open the window, click "open" or "cancel", and I get the problem.

Also, this occurs for a particular site that we are developing (so I cannot post the site URL). The problem started occuring after we reskinned the site.

Can this be a CSS bug?

It only occurs in IE (6.0) for windows.
It doesn't occur in firefox, netscape, safari (mac), firefox (for mac), or IE for mac.

I know it's tough to provide a solution without seeing the actual site and the problem, but any ideas would help.

A:Opening "Tool >> Options" causes IE to stop navigating

Hi Skewbastev,

Does this only happen on the one machine or on different ones. If it's only the one machine, then it could be that you have a bug in IE itself. Try a repair of IE by clicking on Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, then scroll down the list and highlight Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and Internet Tools by clicking once. A button will illuminate under the list saying Add/Remove program. Click on that and then click on the option to Repair, and click OK.

See it that does the job.

Cheers

You might check to see if you have any remote access drivers installed like LogMeIn, Teamviewer, GoToMyPC, etc. Look for them in Device Manager and just delete/uninstall them.

You can always reinstall anything if still needed.

Help! I just noticed this problem today, though it may have been going on for longer, as I don't use this computer often.

I know that i have at least one malicious program, called Contextual Tool Adssite. it causes popups that say your computer is at risk, and shows a fake virus scan window. I had seen this a few times and always killed it without clicking anything, but I'm afraid one of my parents (they are pretty much computer illiterate) may have seen it and fallen for it, and allowed something in. "Contextual Tool Adssite" shows up in my list of programs, but cannot be uninstalled without a "key". Is there some other way to remove this?

The major problem I noticed occurring today is error messages reading saying "the memory cannot be 'read'". They happen whenever I try to run any program that wants to update/download things...I first noticed this problem while trying to play Left 4 Dead (lol). As soon as the level would load, the program would exit. This happened a few times, so I restarted my computer, and then the same thing happened whenever I tried to run Steam. Now steam won't even open, nor will Java updater, Norton updater, or anything that seems to want to update itself. The most common program i've noticed in the error messages is "spoolsv.exe".

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong and how to fix it?

Hi All,

My PC ha been completely hijacked by some "Windows XP tool" which I think was a drive-by download. I am using Windows XP.

When PC boots up this program comes up right away and starts checking the PC for errors and things like that. I can not click on or download or uninstall anything.

1.If I click 'activate' web browser goes directly to this tool's website and I can't navigate to any other site.
2.The all program button has been disabled.
3.F8 safe mode does not prevent this program from running, it runs anyways.
4.Can not do a systems restore either (F10).
5.Task manager is disabled so I can't end task.

I think I need a bootable CD to remove this issue. Any free solutions out there? Any and all suggestions are most welcomed.

My desktop has been taken over by a serious malware called "Security Tool"

I suspect it came when my eldest son went onto a Nissan Forum which he said has a bad name currently for passing PC infections

What happens is this:
* A false security system called "Security Tool" downloads itself and installs an icon in the bottom right hand corner of my screen (actually two icons)
* It continually takes over my screen with messages saying that there are serious viruses and malware infecting my PC. I "X" them out but they keep coming back insisting I activate the illegal security ststem "Security Tool" and run it. It brings up another screen showing that I have 21 serious viruses and malware.
* I tried uninstalling this crap in Start>All programs, but it deletes its new program listing but the program remains. I think it actually re-installs back in All programs
* I have the latest updated Zone Alarm Security Suite installed and set to max but it did not stop this malware. I notice though that every time I turn on anti-phising it tyrns itself off. I tried a ZA "deep scan" but it timed out. I tried a "normal scan but it timed out. I tried a quick scan but it didn't find anything. By timed out I mean this maleware causes my PC to turn itself off after about 10-15 minutes. A strange screen pops up taking over whole page and says something like for security of your PC your PC is being turned off.

The short answer is NO.

2.
Registry cleaners/optimizers are not recommended for several reasons:
Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.

Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not ca... Read more

Building a new system. Just had a question on installing the "Windows USB Installation Tool" BEFORE installing Win 7. According to my MOBO spec's.............GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1151 - GA-Z170X-UD5 (rev. 1.0) by the operating system section, it states..... "Please download the "Windows USB Installation Tool" from GIGABYTE's website and install it before installing Windows 7". How exactly can I do that BEFORE installing the OS? Using Win 7 64 bit clean install. Thanks for the help.

A:GA-Z170X-UD5...... "Windows USB Installation Tool"

Your link is to the specs of your board, could you provide a link or wording to exactly what it is you`re talking about ?

It`s actually under support>utilities , you don`t actually need it, you can use any program you want to put your install files on the usb stick, but if you`re installing 7 then use a dvd, it`s sooo much easier.

But then maybe there`s something magical about Gigabytes software, but anyway it`s a program to put the iso file on the stick, or after you put the iso file on the stick, it`s not something you install before you install windows, as you`ve already guessed.

I downloaded and extracted it and this is what it contains, I assume you would add it to the iso after you format the stick, but it looks like it might have some usb and sata controller software needed during a W7 install, you`d have to find Gigabytes instructions on how to use it.

There is a Program Files directory for the prog(s), but no uninstall prog there. How do I get rid of this mess? A general google search for "remove att-rc self support tool" to no avail . . .

Try booting into safe mode and removing them. Are you sure you dont need them?

I have a blue shield with a X and a red shield with a x in my task bar. They keep having pop up windows that ask me to download the lastest software or they tell me that a virus or worm or trojan is trying to send my credit card info. Outlook won't open. I have tried to run malware bytes and it won't open - gives me the message that the file is infected and is trying to send my credit card info. I try to run a HJT report but it won't open and wont let me down load it. Please help. My computer is pretty much useless at this point. Thanks.

Hey, I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2. I had a run in with a trojan virus that Avast caught about a week ago but had not had any trouble with it until this morning. I booted my computer and all hell had broken loose.

There's 2 shortcuts both on my desktop and in my start menu called "Online Security Guide" and "Live Safety Center", both of which reappear when I delete them.

About once a minute, Internet Explorer pops open trying to access a site at htepo.com/....etc
I have IE in "work offline mode" so the web page is never actually loaded. I use Firefox for all of my browsing. There is also a tool bar in IE called "Security Toolbar 7.1" which I did not install.

A bubble in my system tray keeps popping up claiming "System performance monitor: Warning" yadda yadda yadda, with a flashing yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it as a symbol.

Finally a Windows popup occurs every so often saying "You are unprotected from new version of [email protected] trojan" etc...

I ran Ad-Aware (free version) and it didn't find anything.

Here's my HijackThis log (I have my HD partitioned into two, which is why hijackthis is run from the H: drive):

Anyone know how to keep the width of rows and columns the same as the information you're pasting in?

I have created a spreadsheet, and I would like to keep the formatting and just plug in the new information as I go. However, everytime I copy and paste the "template", the information just squeezes into the default column/row width. I want it to resize the columns and rows as they are in the template!

I'd appreciate any advice - resizing every single column and row is very annoying (especially when you have a lot of work to do!)

A:Excel's "Format Painter" tool

Version?

Resizing every single column and row? no no no.
Ctrl+A, Format-->Column-->Autofit
Ctrl+A, Format-->Row-->Autofit

Or, record yourself a macro to do it for you. Store it in your personal macro workbook.

Hello. I have a laptop whose hard drive is ruined and I want to perform a clean Windows install on a new hard drive using the Product Key found on the label on the laptop.

I downloaded an ISO image of W7 Home Premium 64 bits from here and used W7 USB/DVD Tool on my Windows 7 32 bits desktop to create a bootable flash drive. At the the following message appeared:
Files copied successfully. However, we were unable to run bootsect to make the USB device bootable. If you need assistance with bootsect, please click the "Online Hlep" link above for more information.I looked around on the Web and found this page. I understand where the error comes from as stated in the link but the problem is that I cannot download the bootsect.exe file since I don't have a microsoft store account and I haven't bought Windows 7 HPrem. either, it came pre-installed with the laptop.

Is there any other way of getting the bootsect file?

Thanks for the help.

A:Windows 7 USB/DVD Tool - "unable to run bootsect"

Hi there
The USB tool often doesn't work so do it manually as per described here ( at the botom in the section using the command line).

4 Ways to Create a Bootable Windows 7 or Vista USB Drive

There might be a method in the Tutorials too on the Forum. -- Choose the Manual / command line method.

(Note if you don't have a DVD drive then use a "Virtual Image" mounter tool to mount the ISO to extract the files - alcohol51% free edition is quite good as are others -- Windows 8 has this facility built in to the OS as standard BTW).

A Google Chrome extension is a slap in the face for Facebook.
By Eric Doyle, 22 Oct 2010 at 14:44

As a lover of Facebook but a supporter of privacy, developer Brian Kennish has devised a Facebook application claiming to block information to and from third-party advertisers.

Kennish, a developer at Google, decided to develop a program to counter Facebook Connect?s ability to follow users as they browse registered sites on the web. It also suppresses the ?Connect via Facebook? sidebar.

As a member of the Chrome team, his application is an extension for the Google browser. He therefore felt it necessary to make it clear on his download site that he developed the utility as a private individual and that it had nothing to do with any Google initiative.

He had been keeping his head down since he launched Disconnect. ?Thanks, but I wouldn?t be a very good interview right now. Here?s an algorithm to simulate: No comment,? was his only response on Twitter.

On his blog he elaborated: ?I?ll have more to say about the making of and response to the Facebook Disconnect extension later.?

Kennish claimed Facebook Connect had a history of leaking personally identifiable information and Facebook Disconnect blocked this traffic from the third-party sites to Facebook servers.

A:Facebook privacy tool "Disconnect"

Anyone who trusts a company like Facebook with their private data is just asking for trouble :/

Not only has Facebook been caught selling data on, its privacy tools have been repeatedly shown to be 'window-dressing' with no real protection offered.

I installed the update from the disk in the hopes it would repair some issues I was having(which I have repaired by other means since). After installing the upgrade, besides not solving my initial problems...it caused a lot of other problems...one in particular was I lost my internet connection. I called my provider for help and they gave me phone # to Msoft for free SP2 help. After about an hour with a tech on the phone...he put me on hold for a few minutes to consult some other "experts". Came back and said..."uninstall SP2!"

It appears that Msoft has "rushed out this upgrade"...it needs reworking!!

I thought I was computer savvy until this problem came up. When I double click my computer, recycle bin, control panel, etc, the hourglass comes up for a few seconds, goes off, and nothing else. No error messages or anything, just nothing. I have viewed a few of the threads covering this and a common link was the hijack this result. I have posted that here, and really hope that someone can help me with this. I have run SpyBotSD and adaware, I have run mutiple virus scans, I did an SFC, and the final thing was to repair windows using the original disk, none of which has help. I am running Window XP w/SP2. Any other suggestions would be certainly appreciated. Hope to here from someone soon. MTCS, out.

You may want to reinstall the operating system.

Backupthe files that are importantto you before you reinstall.

The "New" installation will overwrite the current one

If you do not format your hard drive before the reinstall the installation should not harm your files (That's why I suggest backingup your files) and will speed up the installation process.

Hi:

Looking for insight/advice re: KB3054476.

According to Infoworld, it was "Optional" in May, but I was not offered it then.
This week, it was offered as "Important" and "Recommended" (!), but only for one of my 2 Win7/64 boxes.

I have read the MS KB article, as well as THIS FORUM THREAD, the latter of which includes a report of a BSOD due to this particular update.

However, there isn't much out on the web about it.
And most of the discussion about it is overly technical for me.
And I am confused as to why it was previously offered as "Optional", but now is "Important" or "Recommended".

I don't *think* I "need" it (as I have no webcam on this box). And I don't like to tempt fate by fixing things that are not broken.

So, 3 questions:
Is it safe to install?
Is it really necessary/important?
Or would I be OK to hide it?
Thanks very much in advance!

A:KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional"

The status of updates changes with circumstances.
If an update isn't relevant, it won't be offered at all.
If however it's relevant but the related software is not apparently in use, it may be 'optional' - and gravitate to 'Recommended' or 'Important' if the related software is in use.
It can also be promoted through the hierarchy by MS depending on feedback through WU and error-trapped feedback.

If you have (and use) a webcam, then it's probably best to install the update.

Ok, so basically, whenever I turn the computer on, 3 error messages appear:

- A virtual driver failed to inicialize DLL. Chose close to end the program. H:/Windows/system32/code/pRee.exe

- A virtual driver failed to inicialize DLL. Chose close to end the program. H:/Windows/system32/code/pRee1.exe

- Error loading H:/Archiv~/GBPLUG~/gbiehcef.dll. Couldn't find specific module.

(sorry if some terms are incorrect, my computer is in Spanish, to I tried to translate as best as possible)

Please help me solve this terrible problem, it is really getting me on my nerves! (oh, and if this helps, I've recently donwloaded this so called "Limewire acceleration", and whenever I ran the setup, it didn't work. I don't really remember the name of the website I downloaded it from, sorry...)

A:Can't Open "My Documents", "Trash" or other files in "My Computer"!?

Hi and Welcome to the forum

I am almost certain that you have malware problems. Most like caused by you doing file sharing/ P2P - Limewire.

Suggest that you go here and follow the directions:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...oval-help.html

Please be advised that the malware people are very busy and it could take a couple days to assist you.

hi,

OK, this is a weird one.

I wanted to move the "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos" folders to another HDD. I moved the "My Documents" Folder to this HDD without a problem but the others I accidentally set the whole HDD as the folder (if that makes sense). So now the music, videos and pictures folders are set to this HDD and dont have an actual folder to change the properties of. Therein lies my dilema.

If anyone can offer any advice on this curly issue it would be greatly appreciated.
