Hibernation in it self saves everything thats in RAM at the time the system is put into that mode. It should not lock the PC as that wasn't the state it was in before it hibernated. perhaps lock the PC before you push the hibernate button!
I've discovered an alarming feature of Vista which I'm hoping is something that can be switched on or off in control panel. BTW, I don't have a machine running Vista on the bench right now so I can't check this out for myself.
When I put "cleaned up" machines on the sales floor, I password protect the screen saver to keep meddling people out (hey, it's a pawn shop) and also so that they will need to get a salesperson involved in order to check out the computer.
On the Vista machine that was on the floor at the time, (it sold quickly) when coming out of the screen saver, a user could simply click the Guest account instead of the password protected account and get into the machine!! Can anyone say FRONT door?! I realize that Vista has many more safety features than XP, but this seems - to me - to be a huge oversight on the part of MS software engineers.
Can someone give me the low-down on this issue? Thanks!

Hi...maybe someone can help me. My screen saver will not come on and the monitor is not turning off, even though I've set it using the advanced power settings. Also, when I put the computer into Hibernate mode, it always turns itself back on, usually in the middle of the night.
Any help would be great, thanks
After a brief search I saw where others were having similar problem. One source causing the
problem was using a wireless mouse. The posts were not recent but it might be worth checking out
if you are using a wireless mouse or keyboard.
When I try to enable hibernate from the cmd I get this message:
"The following items are preventing hibernation on this system.
there are one or more legacy drivers installed:
An internal system component has disabled hibernation."
I'm not quite sure how to fix this. I haven't knowingly changed anything on my system and everything was working until a few days ago.
Any help you can provide will be appreciated!
I have set up my Win 7 Pro 64-bit screen saver to bring up the password logon screen upon activation of the mouse/keyboard/whatever.
Late last week, whenever I moved the mouse or clicked the keyboard, the screensaver would go directly to the desktop, bypassing the logon screen. I went to the screensaver utility and unchecked and rechecked the 'On resume, display the logon screen' box, selecting 'Apply and OK' each time.
This would work for maybe two or three times and then go back to returning to the desktop.
I've run MalwareBytes, IOBit, and Norton and all come up virus/rootkit free.
There are a few seconds of "grace" time, meaning when the screensaver launches you have a few seconds to "wake it" and go back to your desktop without locking it.
I guess I can assume you're not talking about that, right?
Im trying to set a password for my screen saver and there is a box saying "On resume, password protect" but then it doesnt and there is nowhere to enter a password? Can anybody help me please?
Go to Control Panel > User acounts > Change the way users log on or
off, and untick "Show welcome screen"'Next, look to the left of the page
under "Related tasks" click on Manage Accounts, then on the right under
"Pick A Task",click on "change an account" then click on your account
(and assuming you have administrator rights)click on create a password
and there you go
On screen saver I have option "on resume, display welcome screen" instead of password on resume.
If I want to have protected screen save (screen saver password) I can see no option to do so, I checked power/advance tab prompt for password when computer resume from standby but still did not work.
Hi Sinan !
Go to control panel => user accounts and set a password for your user account. Then you'll be able to enable that option in the screen saver tab in the display properties.
All the boxes are checked in the properties box for both prompting for password after standby and resuming from screen saver. But it does not prompt for password. If the computer is restarted or user logs out it prompts.
Are you starting the screen saver manually or is it starting due to inactivity? If starting manually, it is normal for no prompt for the password to be displayed.
Hello All,I am new to the 8 forums so if this isn't the right place please let me know.So I am looking for a screen saver that has a built in password. I Do not want to use the one offered by Windows as it causes all kinds of commotion when it re-logs in. Anyone know of a freeware or even cheap payware screen saver that has its own password???
I looked at a few here:
I checked 3. They all work on XP. One said Vista also. I'm not sure if there's support for newer OS. But each one lists the OSs it runs on.
Several of the students have passworded the screen saver in windows 95. I do not know the passwords and need to change the screen saver and delete their passwords. Can any one help me solve this problem.
Bootup the pc, and immediately go change the screensaver--don't bother attempting to change the password.

my windows 98 screensaver "password" is not working any more. under control panel, it's "checked" but when my scrollling marquee screensaver comes on i can just move my mouse & the screen shows... it used to prompt me for my password so my sensitive screen data can't be seen by any passerby. I've rebooted & shut-down my compaq deskpro computer completely & did system scan on my norton systemworks. can someone please offer suggestions?... in easy-to-understanc terms? MUCH thanks.... firefighterg email: [email protected]

when i work on my computer i sometimes work on private stuff ,thing i don't want other to see.
however sometimes someone enter the room and want to talk to me ,i don't want him to see what is in the computer screen.
i need a way to setup a hotkey (i choose F9) so that when i press it the screen goes black + when i try to resume (by pressing a button on my keyboard) it should ask me for a password and does not allow the black screen to go off unless the password is correct.
in other words ,once i press F9 nobody should be able to see what i was doing unless he knows the password.
any idea how i can do that ?
i tried searching and i managed to bring a black screen on F9 by using a program called "winhotkey" , but still it does not ask for password on resume. and yes , the option "on resume display login screen" is enabled and the user account have a password.
p.s. the program "winhotkey" just makes a hotkey to any program you wish .i just hotkeyed the scr file to the F9 key.
any help will be appreciated. thank you

I want to set up a screensaver password on several XP machines on the sales floor, but when I check that box and say "OK", it does not prompt me for a password. Has the former owner used a password here and, if so, how can I change it? Thanks!
Nevermind...I found it. The user must have a Windows logon password and that's the same used when the screen saver is interupted.
The check box in the screen saver settings "On resume, display logon screen" is gray and i can't uncheck it. I would like to uncheck it, any suggestions?

My wife is a teacher and needs to be able to instantly enable her screensaver with password immediately enabled when she leaves the classroom for short periods or at the end of the day.
I have tried several ways but all result in immediately enabling the screen saver without password protection or with password protection only at the end of the normal wait period.
This IS a security issue but not sure if it should be in this forum??
Any ideas will be appreciated.
Hi Google..Desktop lock..which will lock the Desktop and be freed by a password.
This computer is admin ; and to protect elected to use text screen saver with expectation to have it password protected. To do so I went into Gpedit.msc and firstly enabled password protect the screen saver. The screen saver did not offer a password when I access the machine. I then enabled screen saver timeout.
After a few minutes the screen saver kicked in. I again could access the machine without being challenged for a password. Last I enable 'screen saver' and that did not work. I am unable using the obvious tools - to password protect the computer using the password screen saver.
And after all this effort I thought I'd change the screen saver from text to photos to see if that would help and 'wait and on resume' are now greyed out?
If there is another obvious method to enable a screen saver with a password protect let me know.
Why not use the simple method of right clicking the desktop, choose personalize, screensaver and then check "on resume display login screen"? Although I am not sure why its not working after using gpedit. Did you restart the pc? Did you try gpupdate /force in command prompt?
Also make sure there is a password on the user account.

Password - Require on Wakeup - Windows 7 Forums
We have a laptop on our home network that is running as a NAS mapped drive. Very happy except for one thing.
Screen saver kicks in after 5 minutes and needs a password to hide. At that point the mapping is dropped, so the NAS becomes useless until it gets a password.
It makes no sense to disable the screen saver password, so I have to use a VNC to access the laptop, fill in the password and it again becomes our NAS.
How can I get the mapping to ignore the fact that the screen saver requires a password?
Turn off the screen saver, set the display to turn off after 5 minutes instead.
Also, why would you require a password for the screen saver to kick in in the first place?
Today I have had 2 different users return to their Windows 95 workstations only to find their computer in screen saver password protected mode. In each case, the user had never used the screen saver before. And the screen saver would not accept their system password. I had to manually boot the computer and then remove the screen saver setting. All work they had open at that time was lost. I am using eTrust 6 with signature file July 28/04. Anyone else experience this before?
XP Service Pack 3
Screensaver is enabled and so is 'Display welcome screen when coming back from screensaver'.
This works most of the time, however on a regular basis the screensaver will resume to the following screen and just stay there forever.
The only thing to do is to press the power button, at which point a popup alerts that a user is logged in, do you still want to shut down.
I am aware of the Screen Saver setup and modify capabilities in the Personalization menu. I am also aware that there is a Preview button there also.
There is a program in the Windows system files that you can put on the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen. You can then click this Icon and manually start the Screen Saver.
I however (in my infinite stupidity) have forgotten the name of this program and where it is located. Can someone please tell me what its name is and where it is located?

I have XP Home Ed, SP2. For quite awhile I have had the starfield screen saver selected. A few months back my monitor began just going BLACK while I was listening to music or browsing around. Several told me it was due to the transformer in the monitor going bad and/or the video card. I replaced both. The BLACK OUT problem persists. I have to cut the power switch to the monitor for a couple of minutes and when I turn it back on the screen saver is there. Now it seems that MAYBE the screen saver starting up caused the problem. So last night I decided to change to a different saver ... tried all of them ... they all came with XP ... and each time they froze as I tried to change the settings or do a preview. Actually when I would choose one it did not display in the little window. Finally I got down to the WINDOWS XP screen saver and it works. So, of all the savers tht came with XP only the WINDOWS XP and the starfield will work.
1 - How do I make the other savers work?
2 - Could this screen saver problem have anything to do with the BLACKOUT problem?
Thanks for your help, suggestions, hints.
Hi, I realise this might well sound pretty trivial, but I'm ~Gutted by the loss of a beautiful screensaver, .. happened just this evening ..been on my laptop for years....
... Another pic got clicked on by mistake, took over as screensaver and deleted the original....
I cannot find it anywhere In my Pic files....
. It has totally disappeared... Is there ~Any way I can retrieve it ? I have ,already tried system restore, but it doesn't help..
Gutted by the loss of a beautiful screensaver
Well that doesn't sound like any of the screensavers that comes with XP. What SS did you lose?
Do you still have all the provided ones & do they work?
Opening or clicking on a pic [perhaps you meant screensaver] should not cause the complete loss of a screensaver.
Right click on your Desktop, select Properties, and click on the Screensaver Tab. Click the drop down arrow. Check that you simply didn't overlook it.
Windows XP screensavers are located in: C:\Windows\System32 The files have the extension .scr
My screen saver does not come on at the time I set it for. I've tried adjusting the time intervals in Control Panel, but the desktop stays on, with no screen saver. I'm running Windows XP with Service Pak 2. Any ideas?
For desktop pc better performance, I suggest you set your desktop background/wallpaper and screensaver to "none", then right click on desktop, click properties, click 'appearance', choose ' windows classic style'.
Then Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display/display properties/screensaver/monitor power/power schemes/settings/turn off monitor after 10 minutes, and set the next 2 drop down boxes ( 1. Turn off Hard Disks, and 2. System Standby) to "never"/apply/ok/ok.
Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Advanced tab /under Performance click on Settings / Visual Effects tab/
Adjust for best performance / Ok / Apply / Ok
Then Start/Control Panel/Display/display properties/screensaver/monitor power/hibernate/take check mark out of "Enable hibernation"/apply/ok/ok. Do not to use hibernate on desktop. Standby & Hibernate Issues in Windows XP = http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_standby.htm
I have windows xp pro and I am having issues with my screen saver and my monitor turning off after one hour like I set it to. My screen saver comes on sometimes but at night when I run norton antivirus it never comes on again it seems when norton begins. Even after it is done checking for viruses. On the other hand. No matter how long the screen saver is on during the day, my monitor will never turn off after an hour like i set it to in power options. Any suggestions
might be secondary screen saver that acts like a real program and not a screen saver try using a differant screensaver just to see if you get same results
I have windows XP, i had set a screen saver with on resume ask for password.
now i want to change it , it is not allowing me to changa it as the option is grayed out . only the option none works.
Hi have you got a systems restore point you can go back to before you put password in.
Your password is the same one as you use to log in with to remove it you have to remove your password you log on with.
When I move the mouse to turn off the screen saver, the "Turn Off Computer" dialog pops up. If I have any applications running when I move the mouse to turn off the screen saver, the apps automatically close. I have been searching to no avail for help on this one. Here are my system specs:
Dell Inspiron 8200
Windows XP SP2
nVidia GeForce 440 Go video card
Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 1000 (wireless keyboard and mouse)
Samsung 19" LCD external monitor
Would that be a screensave provided with Windows or is one that you have downloaded elsehere? Have you tried looking under settings/options for the screensave?
I have a new computer(HP Pavilion) and am loading software. Early I had set window display properties including screen saver options (my picture show) which worked fine. However after loading Norton Internet Security 2007 the screen saver and monitor power functions do not work. Screen saver never comes on and monitor does not go to sleep.
They are setup correctly in display properties and the preview works correctly. Any suggestions on how to solve this one?
It is nortons system scanner that is active in the backgound. Try disabeling it check again
Hey... I set my screen saver to come on when I'm idle for 10 minutes, and I set my screen to automatically turn off in 20. I realize, that sometimes (more frequently now) the screen saver doesn't come on. Instead, the screen just turns off after 20 minutes. Sometimes when I'm not there to witness the screen saver not coming on, I know that it wasn't on because I have it password protected. It irritates me when the screen goes off before the saver, because when I'm not home my computer isn't password protected.
In order for this to be corrected, I have to re-set my screen saver options. Sometimes, the time is still the same, but other times it is changed to 180 minutes, and I know that no one has touched my computer. It seems weird, and I haven't had a clue as to what causes this problem.
BTW, I have XP Home Edition..
Try this right click properties on desktop then click on screen saver then click on power (monitor power) and set the monitor to whatever setting you like monitor less or greater for monitor to shut off also check your power scheme so it correspond with your desktop or laptop...
1. I click on Screen Saver.
2. I then right-click on Screen Saver.
3. I then click "Set as background."
4. But instead of getting a full lscreen 18"x11" pic I get a small 9"x7" pic.
What am I doing wrong?
Are you trying to change a wallpaper?
Go to Control Panel>>> Personalization>>>Desktop Background
At the bottom left, Select "Fill" or "Stretch" under Picture Position.
I recently wiped and restored the operating system on my Wife's computer using a fresh install of Windows XP Home and for some reason the Screen Saver will not kick in. I have the Screen Saver set to kick in after 12 minutes of idle time and it isn't. I have checked all the settings I can think of and they are right to the best of my knowledge and experiences. We just bought a new LCD widescreen monitor for her computer and I don't want to see the screen get 'burned'.
If anyone has experienced this problem or knows of this problem and can share their ideas of how to fix it with me it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

when the screen saver comes on, it imediatly turns off. it will pop up for about 1 second and then cut off. someone in a diff thred told me to post here when i mentioned it in a different post. said something about malware.

help me out guys!
I'm running WinXP Home. I've recently added a second account with "limited" control. I've set both accounts to Never Turn Off Monitor and to use No Screen Saver. I have the rest of the Power Options set to always have the computer fully on, IE: No Hibernation, Standby, etc..
After the computer has been idle for about 10 minutes, the Windows Logon screen saver still appears. This only occurs when the logon screen is on, showing the two accounts to choose from. I've gone back to both accounts and confirmed they are still configured as described above. This has only started after I added the second account.
I don't mind the screen saver so much, however it takes a very long time to "wake" the computer back up.
I've tried to delete all of the screen savers from the Windows folder, however they are rebuilt. I changed the screen saver value from 1 to 0, via the Registry. I've even tried change the time to limit for the screen saver to activate to 9999 minutes. Nothing seems to work.
Since SS is per account, I believe that the screen saver will pop on when you leave it at the login screen. Try not using the welcome screen.
Windows XP Pro, IE6, Zone Alarm Firewall, AVG, Counter Spy, Ad Aware etc System clean.
Ok I have been chasing this problem for awhile. Here is a description of the problem:
I run 3 open IE windows. If I click on a link and a new window opens I move that window to the lower right corner of the screen to keep from distracting my view. During the session all subsquent windows will open in the bottom right rather than the default upper left. Screen saver starts and runs normally but after about an hour the screen saver will start to run in the background and the last open window will be on top. Clicking the screen brings the screen saver back on top but it closes the window that was visible. Now the wierd part if I do not move the new open window to the lower right then the screen saver works normally. I do automotive repair and we look for cause and effect or commonality ie what is the common function that would cause the effect or code. What could be the common function that causes the screen saver to run in the background after moving an open window? Any one have any ideas? TIA
Purchased new Dell Desk Top with Windows XP Service Pack 1 alrady installed. I can not get the screen saver to work. Tried resetting it. Nothing. The monitor will power off when in the personality screen.
First the screen saver: Right click anywhere on the desktop and select properties, then select the screen saver tab.Choose the screen saver from the dropdown list (you can preview before you set it) then make sure you click apply then ok.
Next the monitor:Go to control panel/power options,on the next box, under settings for home...,are the settings for powering off the monitor (I have mine set to never, just my personal preference)
If the above dosen't work, then log on as administrator to make the changes
I bought a Acer netbook with Win 7 starter and then upgrade to Home Premium. Problem is I can not get the screen saver to work. Plus I can't change the wallpaper...
Before the upgrade there was a program on the netbook called Oceanis. I removed the program Oceanis.
After the upgrade I reinstalled Oceanis with no luck...
Hello Rickers, and welcome to Seven Forums.
In Windows 7 Home Premium, you do not need to install the Oceanis program. It's only for Windows 7 Starter and Home Basic editions instead.
Home Premium comes with the personalization feature included.

I had 2 viruses that I think are the cause
of a SCREEN SAVER PROBLEM I have now...
THE STORY :
I used to be able to open DIRECTLY some Screen Savers I have in a FOLDER.
A left double click and it would start and run IMMEDIATELY,
like any other program, (without right click, Install, etc.)
We don't always need to configure it right? And it's faster.
Then, I HAD those viruses (not detected by AVAST!!) :
AV2009 and also blphcv8e3eab.scr,
I GOT RID of the viruses and made a BIG CLEAN-UP of my PC.
I also runned Spybot, Eusing Registry Cleaner, SmitFraudFix,
MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, SpywareBlaster,
Panda online, KASPERSKY, SECONIA.
(Once or twice a week, I run Spybot and Eusing)
Since the Viruses experience, I realised I had a problem with my Screen Savers.
May be due to the blphcv8e3eab.scr virus??
They would not run anymore with left double click!
When I do so, I only get the configuration window.
So, I have always to do the long procedure,
either right click on the Screen Saver application, Configure, or Install, etc.
or right click on the desktop, Propriety, Screen Saver Tab, etc.
Before the VIRUSES, it was not necessary to Install.
They would ALSO run immediately, like any other application
we open with normal left double clicks.

Alright so, in the past few days I have been returning to the computer and turn on the monitor, and I have set the screen saver to nothing but just pure black. And when it comes up, the screen is still completely black except for the taskbar. And the black is in boxes, if I open an application for example Windows Live Messenger, it will clear the black off the screen in the area the Windows Live Messenger window takes up. I usually have to open a full screen application to clear all the black off the screen.
I don't know what is going on will someone please help me.
did you properly install your VGA driver ?
try to decrease your resolution and color first.
OK, so, as a "security" measure, when I'm away from my computer for any extended amount of time, I set the screen saver to 1 minute and turn off the monitor. Of course, I have "On resume, display logon screen" selected.
Well, even when the screensaver is turned off, it'll still go into the login screen every once in a while. Like, I'll get up and walk away for 2 minutes, come back, and I'll be looking at the log-in screen even though it didn't go to screen saver mode. I know I didn't change anything to have it do this, since it also happens on my laptop on occassion.
It's got me pretty confused, anyone else run into this?

I did an upgrade from Win 7 , and Screen Saver / Turn off display after 5 mins was working under Win 7 64 bit
As my title suggest Screen Saver / Lock screen Slideshow / Turn off display after 5 mins are not working under Win 10
The Lock screen Slideshow is there when Win 10 starts but only shows ONE image, never moves to another.
THINGS I've done so far to get any of these working ...Screen Saver / Lock screen Slideshow / Turn off display after 5 mins
I’ve turned off all the Wake on lan functions
Tried different folder/ images for the lockscreen Slideshow ,window spotlight and picture
Tried to set new power options , was able to get SLEEP to show up in "Start" as it was not there before, but once click , the display DID turn off, but wouldn’t turn back on with mouse movement keyboard presses, had to do a hard reboot. Win 10 started without issue and the SLEEP mode was no longer aviable via the power "start" menu.
Anyone have a clue how to get all of these working. Really would like my display to turn off after 5 mins , and the Screen saver to work , the Lockscreen I'm not fussed about

These crashes are DirectX/graphics card related. DirectX comes installed with Windows, so this may indicate Windows corruption. It may also be that you have corrupted drivers or a graphics card hardware problem.
If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.
Run a system file check to check Windows for corruption: Click Start Menu
Click All Programs
Right click Command Prompt
Click Run as administrator

I have a Dell 1750 Inspiron laptop that I use "as a desktop" as every piece of hardware is connected to it.
It runs with Windows 7 Home Edition. It has a 4gb memory and a 450gb hard drive which is less than half used.
I have the screen saver set to Photos and usually have a cut-in time of 1 hour idle.
The screen saver cuts in exactly when it should and scrolls through my photos for as long as the laptop is left idle.
However, as soon as I touch the mouse/keyboard, instead of reverting to the "normal" screen the photos disappear, the blank screen fades for a few seconds and then a message appears in a box, saying that the Photos Screen Saver is not responding, and gives the options of either close the program or wait for the programme to respond. Waiting doesn't seem to work so I have to click on close the programme and then cancel the statement that Windows will try to find a solution, because it doesn't!
I have tried to vary the time before the screen saver kicks in, anything from 1 minute to several hours but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
Can anyone help please?
Have you checked the timing for when the HDD turns off or Sleep or Hibernation kicks in [I disable both of those and lengthen the time on the HDD to several hours], Control Panel, Power Options?
The reason I mentioned the HDD is the symptoms you mentioned seem to apply. The screen saver could be in memory and not affected by the HDD until it's asked for something.
I am using windows XP and I bought a new wireless mouse. Microsoft wireless notebook 6000. It works great, I like the new features but when I have it plugged in my screen saver and power saver options do not function. I have tried to turn the mouse over or remove it from the room so there is no movement possible but the screen save still will not come up. I replace my old mouse which is an optical mouse and no problem screen saver works fine. I really like the new mouse but I need my screen saver any thoughts?

Starting a couple of days ago, Screen Saver and Sleep Mode are not starting as scheduled. I'm running Win 7 64bit and have had my setting established since I got the computer. There appears to be something running in the background that is preventing them from starting. As I watch the screen, I see something flash on the screen for a second, just a quick flash, not long enough to see what it is. The only thing I have running at startup is "Computer and Outlook 2013" which I have always had in Startup.
I looked at MSConfig and Services, but could not determine what this might be. Is there anyway to nail down what is causing the quick flash on the screen, as I think it is probably preventing Screen Saver and Sleep Mode from starting.
Thanks for any insights and tips on what to do.
Uncheck everything in msconfig>Services and >Startup tabs (after Hiding all MS Services), reboot to see if problem persists.
Then add back your AV to see if it's involved, very possible if its bloatware like AVG or Avast instead of recommended MSE or Panda Cloud.

There's no reason to use a Screen Saver which were to protect old CRT terminals. So I'd turn it off and use one of the Aero theme slideshows which are spectacular. You can even have the whole collection from 120 Original Windows 7 High Resolution Scenery Regional Wallpapers Free Download by downloading the folder then browsing to it from Control Panel>Personalization>Desktop Background.

Log On Screen Saver - Enable or Disable
Hello ZMan, and welcome to Seven Forums.
You will not be able to have a slideshow with the logon screen saver. As in the tutorial, it can only be a blank black screen if enabled. Anything else, and you get that message in the NOTE box at the top of the tutorial.
This is what someone else wrote in another topic: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/741250-windows-warning-message-win32-adware.html
"I booted my computer up today, and saw my background wasn't available anymore. Then I see the message, "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer". It says that Win32/Adware.Virtumonde and Win32/PrivacyRemover.M64 are on my computer."
I had the exact same problem but i followed the instructions that someone posted in that topic, these were the instructions posted by "drdrew1469":
"I just got through fixing this (I hope). What it did here was change the background and set the screensaver to the sysinternals bluescreen screensaver (which you may be seeing) while at the same time setting policies in the registry to disable the two aforementioned tabs in the Display properties window.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System \NoDispBackgroundPage and [same]\NoDispScrSvrPage (they are both set to 1. Delete both entries.
Then check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run for any funky alphanumeric filenames (I'm pretty sure it's just a random string anyway so posting the string probably won't help you much). Delete these keys and the associated file(s). (Doesn't hurt to check msconfig either, but I found nothing there)."

I am having a very wierd issue with vista's screen saver. So basically when I leave the comp idle it goes into screen saver then turns off the monitor after 15 mins. Sometimes, more often than not, I come back and move the mouse and hit a few keys on the keyboard and nothing. The monitor wont come out of standby I try turning it off and back on, and nothing. I have the latest drivers for everything in my system and I checked the power management settings and they both are able to wake the computer up. I have a G15 keyboard and I keep the leds on and when this happens the leds are off and the lazer for the mouse is off too. Any suggestions as to what my problem is would be fantastic!

I am having a problem setting a screen saver on my new Windows 10. When setting a screen saver and selecting "Preview" or setting a screen saver and having it go to it at the appropriate time limit, the screen saver displays properly.
However, when hitting a key or mouse move or click, instead of returning to Windows, it displays a black screen and locks. I have tried everything, at the black screen, to return to windows without any luck, other than manually turning the PC off and rebooting.
I have a very strange problem, I'm stumped and would appreciate any help.
On my new HP6910 laptop, when my XP Pro SP3 (system default XP) Screen Saver comes on, the screen has a partial heavily corrupted copy of the bottom taskbar at the top of the screen (!) and when I ctrl-alt-delete and enter my password the taskbar at the bottom is missing all of its text but otherwise looks reasonable. The Oulook, Word, and other started tasks in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen have their icons, just no text, even if there is a group of them and you hover the mouse over the group and they expand. Most of them still work, but Windows Desktop Search (WDS) doesn't work and I have to close them and restart them. This seemed to start a few days after I installed WDS, added a DVI monitor to the docking station and the same day I installed Activesync 4.5. I've reinstalled WDS and removed my wallpaper but this didn't help, I'm about to reinstall Activesync but it takes a few hours to sync for the first time so I thought I would see if anybody had any other ideas before doing this.
All help is greatly appreciated!
I installed a screen saver shortcut link and subsequently deleted it a short time later after a driver update solved the power save problem. Now, however, when I click on "Troubleshooting" on the control panel, a box with the following message appears: " Windows cannot find 'C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe' Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again"
If I click on 'OK' in the box, Windows Explorer stops working for a short while. If I just close the box nothing happens.
Can anyone help me with this small annoyance?
I was looking for a United Methodist Church logo that is commonly used and went on one of the UMC websites to see if I could copy it to my computer for purposes of incorporating it into graphic artwork for some t-shirts that my client wanted us to print for them. I found the logo and clicked on the outside of it and dragged my cursor over the image until it became "transparant blue" and sent it to my computer. I thought it was going to my artwork file, but instead it went to my desktop. The problem is that it is now permanently on my desktop. I cannot highlight it, encompass it in a box or move it at all. This image is not from the screen saver program. It's not an icon. You can't even click on it and move it around on the desktop. It doesn't respond to any right clocks or left clicks at all. It is permanently rooted in this one spot on my desktop screen. I want this image REMOVED from my deskktop. Please tell me how to do this. Thank you very much.
Right click on yor desktop and click Properties. Click the Desktop tab, then Customize Desktop button, then Web tab. In the Web pages box delete everything (except My Current Home Page which is not deletable).

I downloaded a free sample of a screensaver from digiscapes.com just to have a look - and then uninstalled it. Now I constantly get a pop up window telling me I'm running an unregistered Buddy Saver screensaver. My husband reinstalled and uninstalled for me, but I'm still living with this Buddy Saver annoyance. How do I get rid of it ?? (I also sent them an email weeks ago to ask what to do but no response). Thanks
It is probably running at startup. Go to start > run and type in msconfig and enter. Go to the startup tab and uncheck the item for it listed there.
Slowly but surly I am getting the system up and running...now we are in the fine tuning stage...
I now have the screen saver working, but there is one slight catch, after the screen saver has been on for a while and I move the mouse, the screen clears and what is left behind is the log on logo and I have to click on that to get back to the primary screen,
How do not have to go to the log off screen and just continue with my screen/window that I was on before the screen saver kicked in.
There is a checkbox in the screensaver settings that needs to be unchecked, see image below.

While the Windows 7 desktop background pictures fill the screen, the screen saver photos do not.
Is there a way to have the latter fill the screen as well?

Hi, first post here by a rather happy Lenovo Yoga 13 + Windows 8 user.
As the topic says, is it possible to have the lockscreen turn on automatically after a few minutes?
As it is now I can only get to the lock screen after waking up the computer from the screen saver. I would like to have it configured so that the traditional screen saver is bypassed and it goes straight to the lock screen and stays there forever until I swipe it up.
I think the lockscreen is a very beautiful feature and it's great to see all these small notifications. It would be wonderful to just be able to glance at my computer and seeing these notifications without actually having to touch it.
I feel it's kind of useless to only see the lock screen while you're actually logging in, because then you'll see your notifications anyway on your start screen.
The easiest way is to right click your account icon on top right of Start Screen and Lock it.
Don't know of a way to auto lock.

I've had several instances lately, when I got to move my mouse to disengage my screen saver the computer freezes for a good minute and a half before returning to my desktop. Today, I went to preview the screen saver through display properties to see just how often this happens but my comp locked up after clicking preview. I did get this message 3D fly objects is not responding. I clicked end task but it took a while to unlock. Also, shortly after I received the message "Run a dll as an App". I've never seen this before. Not sure if this is connected but, With help from the site I deleted some spy ware last week. Also, sometimes when I shut down my computer the computer freezes on a blue screen and never turns itself off. I eventually just hit the surge protecter switch. Any ideas if this is connected or how to fix?

I reformatted my wife's computer last week and installed Windows 7 Ultimate. The computer uses a Gigabyte motherboard and I used the driver disc that came with the Gigabyte motherboard. The Display Adapter is a ATI Radeon HD4250 with the ATI Catalyst Control Center. The resolution is 1280 X 1024. When I try to set the Screen Saver, the apply button is greyed out. After pressing OK I go back to the display, but the screen saver never comes on.
Go to amd.com to get your video drivers, download and install them, restart the pc and see if the screensaver will run.
Never use video drivers off the cd, always go to the manufacturer`s website. In this case amd.com

I have Windows XP. I noticed recently that my screen saver is not kicking in after the required time I have entered (30 minutes). I read something about a dialog box for SP1 or SP2 for Windows XP. Do you have a wireless USB mouse? If so, unplug it and try a $5 standard PS/2 mouse. I bet it works then

Computer had gotten real slow so after trying a few things (running malwarebytes, ccclean, register??) I decided to dump everything and start over.
Loaded up programs and things were a lot faster but the computer still didn't seem right. At times in typing, the letters would not type or a differnt letter typed.
Also internet explorer won't open so I have to use windows update to get on line, when I click explorer, internet properties comes up even off of Start programs internet explorer.
My computer (after apx. 5 minutes of non use) makes me log in again.
Ran malwarebytes, security essentials, so I'm not sure what is up.

The screen saver is not working,
when we go to the screen saver setting - there is a message - "The screen saver can't run because it requires a newer video card or which require Direct 3D"

My friend has two drives in his computer.........one is the boot drive with windows 7 as the OS and the other is the one he stores all his photographs on and other data.
How can the screen saver for windows 7 use photographs direct from the storage hard drive? or will he have to copy all his photographs onto his boot drive to facilitate this.
Thanking you in anticipation of your help.
RIGHT click an empty spot on the desktop.Choose Personalize.Choose Screensaver.Click the drop down arrow under Screensaver, select Photo Gallery.A preview will be shown in the box. Since this will be from the default setting, pictures on the C drive, he will need to click Settings/Browse in order to choose the storage drive pictures folder. After he does that, click Save.If he does not want to use all the photos, he can create a folder and copy the photos he does want to use to that folder. He can then navigate to that folder using the method I described.5 more replies
Normally when my computer is idle for about 10 minutes the screen saver will come on and then shortly after the screen saver with stop and and the screen will go dark, like it should, and the computer will go to sleep. But since last night that has not been happening. the screen saver does not come on and after maybe 20 minutes or so, the screen goes dark and the computer goes to sleep.
Try a system restore to before the problem started. If that doesn't help, you might try this fix from kellys-korner. Scroll down to line 51, ScreenSaver Disable/Enable. Instructions to run VBS Files at top of web page.
Gateway 675XL 1mb ram. About 2 weeks ago, my screen saver quit working. Can't find any programs interfering with it, nor did I change anything. Now it will not come up at the allotted time. Any suggestions!
You may need to go to Control Panel and then Power Options and increase (or set to never) the settings to turn off monitor.
U might need to Run System Restore, which enables the system to go back to a date before U had a problem. Everyone forgets about the most popular fix. Is simply running System Restore, which seems to undo just about anything for most folks.
