Counting Files and Folders

Q: Counting Files and Folders

Hi,

When we right click on any folder or drive, and then see Properties, Windows shows count of files and folders. My question is that what technique Windows uses to count files and folders? Does it uses FindFirstFile() and FindNextFile() API or some other techniques? My doubt is because my program shows count slower than Windows. Anyone please clear my doubt.

Thanks and Regards,
Abhay

Hello All,

I am looking for something to help me in my work. I have to keep line counts in text and CSV files in a log. I was wondering if it was possible to do this with a batch file?

Here is what i would like for it to do:
Open the DOS window in XP.
Drag the Bat file to the dos window
Drag the file needing to be counted to the same window(or copy the network address), click enter
and have a line count

Currently I use KEdit to get this information from the status bar (size) but thought a batch file might be easier (and quicker).

Can someone help me?

Tannks a bunch

A:Solved: Batch File for Counting Lines in Text or CSV files

Did some Googling around, never really thought of doing this in a batch file. I found a VBscript alternative you might be able to use from command line though.

http://www.computing.net/answers/programming/batch-getting-the-number-of-lines/15728.html

here's a vbscript alternative:

Code:

Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set objArgs = WScript.Arguments
myFile = objArgs(0)
Set objFile = objFSO.OpenTextFile(myFile,1)
Do Until objFile.AtEndOfLine
line = objFile.Line
objFile.ReadLine
Loop
WScript.Echo "Line count of", myFile , "is", line

usage:
cscript myscript myfile

The link above is the link to the page where I found this information, wanted to give credit where credit is due. With this script you could just call the script and give it the parameter my file from command line. If you really wanted a batch, you could easily create a batch that echo's each of those lines into a temp.vbs, calls the temp.vbs with a parameter %myfile using the "cscript myscript myfile" command then "del temp.vbs" at the end. Seems very redundant and pointless though.

Hope the VBS helps you.

You have posted four different logs since the end of October,2007, here, here, here and here (where you also stated that your copy of XP is not not genuine). Also, each log appears to be from a different machine. This would amount to the abuse of the free service given in the forums. Please be informed that these threads will now be closed. However since the last update whenever I either copy or move a file into any folder windows puts that folder under the Recent group in the taskbar. Is there any way to fix this?

Hello!

I would very much appreciate some help finding my missing files and folders if possible.

I am running windows Vista version 6.0, service pack 2.

I started windows, and noticed that 5 of my desktop folders were missing, and all of the files contained within. A search for document and folder names returned nothing (even with advanced search options). One of the missing folders was called "term 1". I created a new folder, and tried to change the name to term 1. A pop-up told me that this destination (desktop) already contained a folder named "term 1"- did I want to merge these folders? I was confused, because I could no longer see the original term 1 folder. I clicked "yes" hoping that a merge would result in a visible term 1 folder, but now the new folder also disappeared. After some intensive searching, I could not find any of the folders/files that were missing. Some other folders/files were still visible on my desktop though.

I restored my computer to a previous checkpoint (from 2 days ago, after a windows update). After reboot, I received a message that the restore was unsuccessful. At this point, all of my desktop folders and files were gone, aside from windows default desktop icons. A search returned no results. I remembered that restore can fail because of an AV program, so I disabled Norton. I tried to undo the restore, which was successful, but no files/folders returned. I then tried to do a restore to a checkpoint from befor... Read more

Hi

I've got an annoying problem with my small office network. There are 3 PCs on the local network and we share files. Usually (but not always) if you are in one of the shared folders and you want to create a new folder, once you've right-clicked and created the new folder, you need to navigate away and back again in order to actually see it. This also happens when re-naming the folder.

To be clear this is what happens:

Right click, select 'create new folder'

Nothing appears

Use back and forward buttons

New Folder now visible

Rename folder, but it reverts to being called New Folder

Use back and forward buttons

Folder now appears with the new name.

Two PCs are using XP and one Vista, it happens ot all of them. Only happens with shared folders.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Many thanks

I have been having problems with my laptop lately to say the least. I realized that it came pre-installed with Vista 32-bit but that I had a 64-bit processor so I added in an extra gig of RAM and did a clean install of Vista 64. Other than many, many devices not working at first (including the ethernet controller) due to driver issues, it was working fine. I had previously backed up my files in Vista 32 and tried to restore them after the installation, but the only way to do this was to use the "restore from another machine" option because Vista thought my backups were from another system due to the restore. After getting everything to restore correctly, I noticed that I had lost many administrator privileges that I had before.

After a few days, I got a blue screen of death and when the system restarted itself it said that a hard drive failue was imminent and I should backup and replace the drive. Unfortunately, it would not allow me to backup so I had to replace the drive and restore again with the same backup that was from "another system". I am having the same problem with rights to files and folders. Today, for example, I was using TuneUp Utilities' defragment utility and there were large parts of the drive that were "locked" and were not able to be moved. I assume this is because I had no rights to them after the restore.
My question (after all that!) is: how can I get the rights to all my files back safely and easily. I tried to go ... Read more

NoVirusThanks File System Protector is a powerful utility which uses a kernel-mode driver to completely lock a file or a folder and to deny write access to files (allow read-only). You can write rules for any process or only for specific processes, you can lock files or folders and you can also protect files from modifications (write access) so that processes can only read the file content, but not hijack or modify it. With NoVirusThanks File System Protector you can protect sensitive files and folders from unauthorized accesses or modifications, a swiss army knife against nasty ransomware like CryptoLocker family or to just protect important files.

On the ?Settings? tab you can specify a custom logs folder to save blocked events, and on ?Exclusions? tab you can manage trusted applications (using wildcards), so they are excluded from the block-rules. To edit the default rules or to create your custom rules, open the ?Rules? tab and then click the button ?Edit Rules? (it may ask you Admin credentials) to edit the Rules.DB file. The rules are updated in real-time and writing rules is very easy, you can use wildcards characters and aliases, example:

Code:

[%OPER%: DENY_ALL] [%PROC%: *] [%FILE%: C:\locked-file.txt]
[%OPER%: DENY_ALL] [%PROC%: *process.exe] [%FILE%: *\LockedFolder]

Hi ALl,

My sister was using the laptop browsing on websites and sunddenly the computer went off. Upon restart we could not access Internet Explorer button, the control panel, my computer and all system applications such as them were not visible on the start menu in the corner on the left hand side. All folders/files on the desktop were gone and an antivirus software kept coming up that was not known. I know a bit about computers and run AVG Free in safe mode and removed the anitvirus that was actually the virus itself in form of Trojan virus. This helped slightly but I still cannot see any files/folders that was previous to the virus. AVG now says the computer has no viruses but it is still not back to normal.

Any help will be much appreciated

I cannot move or copy files, folders, or pictures when using the XP files & folders task manager LINKS on the left side of window. These links will no longer move or copy files to new locations. I just get instant hangup when I click these links provided in XP view. When I try to close the hungup window it shows that it is not responding. Is there any way in windows 7 the show hidden files and folder and show system files, however hide only desktop.ini's and thumbs.db? Don't need to seem them. Annoying.

A:show hidden files folders (exclude files)

Hello event3horizon,

The only way that I know of would be to have Show hidden files, folders, and drives selected (dotted), and to check the Hide protected operating system files box. Of course, all hidden protected OS files will hidden as well. Hidden Files and Folders - Show or Hide
If you like, you could use the context menu from either step 2 or 3 in the tutorial below to quickly toggle to show or hide all hidden files when you like. This way you see them all when you want to, and none when you don't.Show - Hide Hidden Files - Add to Context Menu
Hope this helps,

Hello

Some days ago, i wanted to borrow my laptop to my friend, so for security purpose i right clicked on each drive and on Properties \ Security \ Group or user names \ Edit and i checked "deny" box for all items for the users. it worked fine and ll drives were locked.

Now, i want to regain access to my files and folders but i have some issues.
i went back the above procedure and checked the "allow" box. It gave me access to open drives and folders but i can't open any file!?
It seems like i have restricted myself and i can't get out of it

I also tried below procedure:
right click on drive \ properties \ security \ Advances \ Owner \ Edit \ Administrator (Replace owner on subcontainers and objects)

it didn't help

Note: my user is Administrator
I Use Win 7 Pro 32 bit

i really appreciate any comment

Thanks

A:Windows 7 Pro security for files and folders has restricted my files

When changing permissions, only do so for Groups and specially the User's group. Right click on the "Computer" icon and choose "manage". Then go to "Local users and groups", then "users". Look for the default Administrator account, the original and turn it on if it is off. Log in as that account and set permissions again.

Just bought a new HDD and moving large amounts of files and folders.
It appears that 'random' folders and files on my old hdd wont move to their new destination because I dont have permission to move them ?

The only way I can get them to move is to go into file->properties->security.. assign myself as an owner, then add myself to group/users and give myself full control.

If I do this to a 'folder' it gives me permissions errors about the 'files' inside the folder (i.e does not propagate downwards) so I have to do it to files ONE BY ONE which is taking ages and ages to move stuff...

why the hell have i lost ownership of seemingly random bunches of files ? and is there an easier way to get it back ?

thanks..

A:Moving files / No permission random files/folders

Yes, there is an easier way : Add "Take Ownership" to Explorer Right-Click Menu in Win 7 or Vista.

Hello.
I'm running Windows 8.1 64 bit.
When I plug in an SD card or USB drive into my computer all the files and folders are replaced with .lnk files with the same name as the original. In addition, all the files and folders are hidden, and I don't seem to be able to unhide them.
This does not happen every time I plug it in, but it happens fairly often. The motive behind the lnks is clear when I look at its properties. Here is an example of what one looks like replacing a file named splash.lua:

%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c "start %cd%splash.lua & start %cd%wyNdYUwEdFccnce.exe & exit"
It is starting another hidden file which is the virus.
I've run full scans with Malwarebytes AntiMalware, and Avast free Antivirus, but they found nothing. I even tried Malwarebytes AntiRootkit, and it found nothing either.

Possibly related to this, a folder appeared in the root of  both my hard drive partitions called $Recycle.Bin. I've heard of other people with this identifying it as malware, so I figured I should mention it.

However, the thing that worries me most is that if I didn't notice that the files were .lnks, I would have no idea anything fishy is going on at all. My antiviruses said nothing, and there's no reason to think I would have a virus.
Is there anyway to be sure there is no malware at all after I take care of it? For all I know, someone could be recording all my passwords and everything I type and I would have no idea.
Thank you very... Read more

Seeing that no one responded to your topic yet, I'd suggest you open another one in http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/22/virus-trojan-spyware-and-malware-removal-logs/

I would approach your problem using Farbars Recovery Scan Tool, but as per forum rules I can't give you instructions regarding that on this forum, so I can't help you in that regard in this topic.

When you create another topic in the other forum section you could include a report from USBFix: http://www.en.usbfix.net (alternate download: http://www.infospyware.com/utiles/usbfix/ click "descargar").
Once downloaded start it as administrator (right click > run as admin) and when prompted connect your drives containing .lnk files. After that click 'research'. When completed a report will open (can also be found at C:\usbfix.txt). Post that one to your new topic.
You can open USBFix once again and this time press 'listing'. It will create another report detailing your various filesystem root locations. Attach that log file, too.

Best of luck.

Hi there,

This is my work computer, so I don't have total control over it. I do have the administrator password. Windows 7 Pro SP1, it's one of 3 terminals connected to a Windows Server 2008 server. This contains the database for the business (small hotel).

So today I get to work to find the MSE icon orange. I open it, and it's asking me to restart the computer to complete the cleanup. I go to History, and find multiple entries of these:

Behavior:Win32/Crowti.B
Behavior:Win32/Crowti.E
Behavior:Win32/Crowti.A
Ransom:Win32/Crowti.A
Behavior:Win32/Crowti.G

Under the "Ransom" entries, the only file listed is HELP_DECRYPT.HTML. When I go to the folders, there is that file, and there are two more: HELP_DECRYPT.TXT and HELP_DECRYPT.PNG.

All our files though, appear to be OK, unencrypted and healthy.

I understand these files themselves are not the ransomware, but I am wondering how they got copied to all the folders. Is it possible for this trojan to run without adminsitrative privileges (i.e. someone had to enter the password)? If not, how could these HTML, PNG and TXT files have been copied to the PC?

I'm also trying to figure out how this might have happened. We have security cameras covering the front desk, and at the time the files are indicating on the "date created" "date accessed" "date modified" fields, which is the same date and time, no one was apparently using a browser. The resolution on the video is bad, but I think I can... Read more

Hi, my PC has been acting up and my hard drive free space started to change from 4.00 GB before the reboot to 38.7 GB after the reboot and I didn't delete anything. Now, my media files in my folders and subfolders are missing and saying "folder is empty," my wallpaper and desktop icon disappeared, my programs in the "program" folder of the start menu saying "(empty,)" and now my IE and Firefox has been hijacked. Even some of my software on my computer has stop working or stop loading up (such as disk defrag) and all of this happen after I rebooted my computer.

I wanted to know if there is a way to fix this? I did some Google searching to see if anyone else had this problem but I only found very little on the subject. I don't know if it's a user shell problem or not.

I wanted to also add that my user profile logo on my XP logon page has defaulted as well after the reboot.

I try to run chkdsk but I'm not sure under what option... and in every single folder it that those three files appear it says something like the first allocation unit is not valid and that the entry will be truncated.

Please help... I would really like to recover all my newborn pictures

A:corrupted files same three files in all folders, can't del

Always do backups, and always do some type of check later to see if the backuped data actually backed-up.

Sounds like the USB is kinda fried. They recommend that when you pull it from the computer, you're supposed to go down to the "safe uninstall" icon on the task bar on the right side first. Sometimes I don't bother. I would just put the computer to sleep for 5 secs, and remove the USB while it's asleep.

Did you already perform the clean install? If not, then the people at the major electronics chain- Tech service department can try to fish out the data for you. I would say the same thing for the USB, but IMO, there is less hope for that option.

Hi,

I am guessing this will be either incredibly easy and I am missing something, or incredibly difficult to achieve.

But what I am wanting is to setup my system so that one partition has the ability to view all of the hidden windows files and folders and also hidden system files.

However at the same time for none other partitions on my PC to have this ability.

I can set this up affecting all paritions but there are some that I do not want this feature on.

I know I can laboriously keep switching it back and forth on the drive I want but I would not like to have to do this unless absolutely necessary.

So does anyone know any method that I can achieve what I am wanting.

Running a scan disc before doing a defrag

Using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.

Making System Restore points, at least once a week

Makaing a system Image once a month (varies by user)

Not relying on your A/V common sense, should prevail. You know of many sites can cause a problem.

Do not use any reg cleaning or optimizing software.

Download and use Ccleaner about once every two months. Untick any registry entries.
http://www.piriform.com/

If you follow these instructions, you will be trouble free for a long time to come.

Be sure to back up your hard drive about once a month (varies by user) and to keeep system restore points up to date.

OE6 stores each named folder in a DBX file. The BAK files you see are failed compression attempts.

The error you get when trying to move mail to a different folder might be from an overly large or corrupt DBX -- which has a hard size limit of 2GB.

When you create a new folder in OE, a similarly named DBX file is created in your mail store folder on the computer.

There is a DBX file named folders.dbx, that tells OE how folders are sorted. Inbox, Outbox, Sent, Drafts and Trash, are automatically created if they are deleted from the store folder

You might have noticed that when you move a significant number of mails from one folder to another, that the source folder doesn't get any smaller. That's when you need to compact folders, or OE will decide on its own when to compact folders.

I would be careful here, since it sounds like you have an unstable DBX or two. Maybe start Windows in safe mode, and disconnect the PC from the internet before moving large quantities of mail around and attempting to compress the DBX files.

If I were in your position, I would also drag a copy of the entire store folder to the desktop, or external storage (with OE shutdown of course)

Can you tell what size your inbox.dbx is? Have any of them gotten close to 2GB (2,097,664KB)?Click to expand...

Good afternoon PedroHin, All of sub folders for OE 6 are gone and the .bak files are in the recycle bin. i added a sub folder in OE under the inbox. I have tried restoring one at a time the bak files then dragging the existing dbx file out of the "store" into a folder onto the desk top. renaming the bak file to a dbx file. Then closing the message store and opening OE and nothing is in the folder....have tried this 10 different times with different files all with no success. Any advice you can suggest would be appreciated. jkClick to expand...

Hi apachepilot and welcome to TSG.

Swapping out DBX files only works if the folder already exists in OE.
I think I see what you've got and may have an easy way to correct things.

This assumes you lost the folder tree in OE (you only have Inbox, outbox, Sent Items, and Deleted). The subfolders and your mail vanished. That's usually the result of a corrupt Folders.dbx.

Do the following with OE closed.
If you've moved all the DBX files from the Message Store into a folder on the desktop, place the BAK's into the Message Store folder. Change all the extensions from BAK to DBX.
MOVE the Folders.dbx into the desktop folder.

Open OE and a new Folders.dbx will be created and hopefully reindex all the DBX files (formerly BAK files).
That should recreate all the mail folders in OE. Everything will be a main folder like Inbox, but you'll be able to drag and drop them in the folder... Read more

It reports that 200 MB of data is in the drive but how the hell can I see that data? Whenever I create a new folder in it then it disappears as well.

To move all the mp3 files out use the Windows search and search for .mp3

This will give you all the mp3 files under that folder and you can select and move them all at once.

A:can't see files or folders

If you have recent restore points that's likely the most reliable way to get your network basic functions back. If you get back to square one I recommend using a registry backup such as ERUNT and/or new restore points before changing any settings. There may be a more recent registry backup tool than the ERUNT utility but I haven't tried any. Perhaps other posters will suggest some.

But when changing system settings a rule of thumb is to make a way to get back to the status quo so that each tweak doesn't lead you further down a dead end. If you can restore your system then you have more freedom to experiment.

Hello, I don't know if this has been answered before, if so then I couldn't find it. Within my pictures folder I have many sub-folders that contain thousands of .jpegs. I was wondering if there's a way I can view ALL files within my sub-folders without having to open each individual folder? I guess you could say something similar to hitting ctrl+a and opening all files. Can anyone help me on this? Is it even possible? Thanks.

John

A:Files & Folders

You would probably have to use 3rd party software to create an album and view the pictures within the software. You certainly wouldn't want to try and open thousands of picture files all at once. You would run out of memory very quickly!

Could probably write a batch file or vbscript that could cycle thru each folder and open each picture one at a time.

I have a 2 computer home LAN. Both machines run XP Pro, are connected via ethernet using a D-Link DI624 router. No software firewalls on either machine, not even the MS firewall.

My problem is that while I can connect, I can not see all files and folders. Sometimes I can't see entire folders. Sometimes, I can see the folder and some of the files, but not all of them. Usually, in a list of files, I can not see the first few files. For example; if I have a folder of songs named 01.song, 02.song, ...12.song, I can see songs 4 through 12 but not 1-3.

I have checked all file attributes, checked all permissions and even tried setting up the folder as a share, even though the entire drive is shared. What is weird is that when I set the folder up as a share, I could again see only some files but they are different that what I see when I drill down through the drive manually to get to the folder. It is not just this music folder, that is just an example. It is all folders.

I even tried accessing the files/folders on the target machine from that machine directly. In that case I can of course see all files using Explorer on that drive but if I try to get to it through the network location, I can't see all the files, even on that machine.

Can anybody help me?
P.S. I have run and rerun the network setup wizard.

ok so i discovered a new problem with my personal computer and was going to see if you guys had ever ran into this. While looking through some recent vacation pictures I saw that I was missing some pics from past events...In fact I was missing all the pics I have on my computer, other than the ones I uploaded last week. On some further investigating I discovered the same thing with my mp3's. All in all I was missing about 800 to 1,000 pics and mp3's. I was extremely aggravated and remembered loading up music on my mp3 player last week from Windows Media Player. When I checked WMP, it has all my files on there(pics and MP3'S). I can access them and everything, they work fine, but when I try opening their file location.......nothing. All i get is an empty folder. Do any of you guys know what could have caused this or have you ever had this problem. I figured it was a type of sync that WM did, but can't figure it out. I have ran AVG virus scans, Malwarebytes scans, system restores, etc and nothing seems to work.

I will do my best to sum up my problem.I turned on my old computer (Running XP) that has run fine for about 7 years today for the first time in about two weeks and immediately I had some script errors continuously popping up and even something saying something was wrong with the hard drive (which is where I suspect this problem lies). I restarted the computer and the hard drive error went away but the scripts kept popping up. In addition, when I went in to any folders on the Desktop or My Documents, My Music, etc. the files did not show up. However, the files still exist according to both the Folder Properties and when I tried to play a music file in iTunes that was located in My Music it still played. All of the files in Program Files are still there (though that may only be because of the System Restore). So, I did my research and found that it was a rootkit causing this problem (the scripts were related to a Google redirect thing, similar to the one outlined in this thread). After trying a couple of System Restores with no success, I ran Hitman (TDSSKiller would not run), removed the rootkit, and restarted the computer. The scripts and the Google redirects are now gone thanks to Hitman, but I still cannot access my files in Explorer or even through the Command Prompt. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Should I do a Defrag or Disk Cleanup or something like that to try to correct it? I don't know if it would be related to the rootkit or not, but the comput... Read more

W8 seems to have lost the right click option to "align to grid" and to turn off "auto arrange".

Is it possible to arrange files and folders like this ? I think W7 lost this feature too.

When you work with dozens, hundreds even, of files and folders and sub folders it's important to be able to group them logically. It's also a pain to have lost the customise option from folder properties and to now have to navigate via the actual file location to get to it.

W8 seems all about "Apps"... everything has to be an App. It's not all bad but it could be so much better.

Just type in what you did in XP and things should work. But, there is one trick, use the "Advanced Search" and add the check mark in "include non-indexed, hidden and system files (might be slow).

Hello. I bought a used computer a few months back (app. 7-8 mos. ago), but was not hooked up to the internet until 3 weeks ago or so. I got Aol dial-up & unsuccessfully tried to download their anti-virus program, but due to an earlier installation of Norton, some files were still on hard drive, & AOL would not proceed until they were found & deleted. So the bottom line was I was so thrilled to be back on the internet that I didn't push the anti-virus program issue. My fault totally, but when I finally did run a Pc-cillin scan, I was completely shocked at the NUMBER of viruses- I was only through 1/3 of my files & it was reading 7,000 +. However, as I looked at the files being scanned I realized that I did not recognize any of them & the virus which was pre-dominant, Worm GAO, was probably on the computer when I bought it, propagating away. Anyway, I realize the hard drive is toast, but are any of the files salvageable? Could I use Pc-cillin to scan individual files & save them to CD or do I still run risks of re-infecting a new hard drive? Also, I uploaded photos to Yahoo, so if people were to download them to their computers, will they contain viruses? How about saved e-mail? And yes, I definitely learned my lesson the hard way!!! Thanks to anyone, for advice. I have Windows XP Professional. System Manufacturer VIA Technologies, Model VT82C597. Hello All:

All I want to do is create an Audio CD from some .mp3 files I have.
(15 .mp3 files = 55.9MB)

I have tried ImgBurn, Ashampoo Burning Studio, and BurnAware.

I have tried changing the write speeds to the lowest settings.

It all seems to go well until the end of the burn when every program tells me the Write Failed. That's it- and I don't know why.

I have an IDE Plextor DVD/RW (PX-870A ATA) drive.

Any ideas about settings? Or anything else I should be checking?

TIA!

How long are those mp3 files, not in bytes but in minutes?

Things ro consider... when buring a standard audio CD, the mp3 files must first be converted wav files, the burning programs do this automatically.. at least most of them do. If the mp3s are encoded at a high bit rate the wav files could be quite large... is it possible you're exceeding the size limit for the CD?

The other thing to remember.. although it shouldn't affect the burn, use "Disk At Once".

2. i cannot save any new files, pictures, or anything. and its important that i do, i am a marketing advertiser and i really need to be able to work with my pictures and graphics.

3. i randomly hear some sort of sports radio channel through my speakers, even with my internet browser closed. sometimes its a poker channel, sometimes its baseball, just 10 minutes ago it was a stupid "guess what candy bar your tasting" thing. the only way i can stop it is to restart my computer.

4. my task bar disappears randomly and comes back maybe 20 minutes later. (as im typing this i dont see it)

5. my computer is running extremely slow. ive never had this problem.

6. ive tried running my spybot search and destroy, adaware, and kaspersky, and all 3 of them stop in the middle of the scan saying there was an error, and my computer shuts down.
if i can get some kind of help, i would greatly appreciate it. i dont want to lose any of my programs that i have paid for. i dont want to lose anything, and i cant afford to go out and buy a new computer.

To put it in a nutshell, I downloaded a game, tried to open it, however it never did. Now accessing my processes list... I have over 500 processes running, and counting. All under the name of the game. My laptop doesn't appear to be running noticeably slower, however these 500 processes are going to mess my computer up sooner or later..

I scanned the executable file with MalwareBytes, Kaspersky (my background AV) and Microsoft Defender. It was clean. Kaspersky however, noted that the program was potential dangerous, only because the digital signature was missing. I told Kaspersky to 'Limit' execution - only to stop dangerous actions.

I then continued to watch my process list grow up to 1000, running under my username. Then eventually, the physical memory overloaded and my computer crashed.

Several days later the same thing occurred. However this time, with a different game. I scanned it, and it was clean. I told Kapsersky to once again, limit execution with no digital signature. Within seconds of opening the game, I had over 200 processes, and the number was slowly rising. I had to hit 'End Process Tree' in order to stop my computer from crashing again.

One person suggested that it had to do with Kaspersky... As other games have worked in the past without limiting them.

I know it isn't a virus or anything malicious, perhaps a glitch? And how can I prevent it?

Additional Info:
Windows 7
AV: Kaspersky Pure

Thanks in advance.

A:500 Processes And Counting?

Try Googling the names of some of these processes. Perhaps that will help you figure out what's causing them or if they're malicious.

What are your system specs? PC Brand and model number, OS, cpu, amount of memory?
Also, do you have alot of icons in your task bar next to clock in the lower right hand corner of your monitor? If so, you can disable the ones you don't need running and that'll free up some resources.
Defragmenting your hard drive my also help speed things up.

Hi,

I am having problems turning off the Shared Files facility in 8.1. I do not need to share any information between computers, am not part of a domain, and don't need this facility, so would prefer that it was turned off.

I have had the same problem on another computer using Windows 7 Starter, and have posted details in the 7 Forum. The problems with Windows 7 computer now seem to be resolved (thanks to Aura and reast82) but I’ve tried to apply the same ‘fixes’ in Windows 8.1 and this is not yet resolved.

The fixes I have tried are these:

I've followed the path: Start > Computer Management > Shared Folders > right-click on any folder > clicked on ‘Stop sharing’, but I cannot change this option. It still says ‘Stop sharing’ and cannot be changed.

I tried another method using a command line  (Start > All Programs > Accessories > right click Command Prompt > run as Administrator) and typed:

 net share <sharename> /delete

(the sharename being the name of the file you want to stop sharing). This didn’t work.

I have tried to disable network discovery and then tried to disable the shares, following this link:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enable-disable-network-discovery#1TC=windows-7

While it was possible to select the option to turn off Network discovery and file and printer sharing, when I checked these ... Read more

Hello. Welcome to Bleeping Computer. If a folder/file is hidden, there is probably a good reason for it to be. They are likely essential system components. If you are unsure of what they are, do not delete them.To enable viewing of hidden files and folders:Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.Double-click on the My Computer icon.In the explorer window that pops-up, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. After the new window appears select the View tab.Move the dot to Show Hidden Files and Folders.Click the OK button. With Regards,The Panda

Hello,

Can anyone help me with this please. I do not know what the text below means but the obvious interpretation is that files and folders are being shared with remote computers, which I do not wish to do. I always opt to share nothing on my computer. Or perhaps it means something different and is harmless.

In Windows 7 Starter, I opened 'Computer Management' and then
> Shared Folders > Shares. Listed under this are the column headings:

Share name       Folder Path        Type             Client Connections        Description

ADMIN$             C:\Windows        Windows       0                                    Remote Admin
C$                       C:\                      Windows       0           ... Read more

A:Shared files and folders

Those shares are hidden as indicated by the $. Try running \\localhost\admin$ at a run box on your computer to get an idea.

They are used by the system / domain to execute commands remotely mostly. For the most part, I'd leave them alone unless you are hyper vigilant on security and are not participating in a domain or accessing your machine remotely. I believe disabling the server service will get rid of the IPC$ share. Check this article for some more info on the effects of disabling the shares.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842715

Suppose you, the admin, need to access COMPUTERA from COMPUTERB, Well, since we have built in hidden shares you jsut connect to it by \\COMPUTERA\C$ and voila; after enetring the credentials you're in. Good for when KVM is out ofthe picture

My files and folders are all out of order when I try to access them from MS Word 2007 (using File, Open), and there is no way to sort them! BUT, when I access the SAME tree of files and folders from Windows Explorer, everything is sorted A - Z perfectly. It's just that when I access these same files/folders from MS Word (using File, Open) the files/folders are all randomly listed, in a jumbled up order, and I have looked everywhere for a Sort button, but can't find one. (I can sort from Windows Explorer, but that doesn't change the order of the files and folders accessed through Word, with the File, Open commands.

This is a new problem, they used to be perfectly sorted --- and I haven't downloaded anything or done any Windows updates recently. I'm running Vista Home Premium (64 bit) and Office 2007.

A:Can't SORT Files + Folders

Just for chuckles take a look in the Tutorials section and see if there's anything about the Standard File Open Dialog settings. If not there, try tweak sites like Major Geeks and Annoyances.

edit: btw I don't have or use MS Word so I don't know if it uses some other dialog. But one of those tweak sites should have a fix.

I recently deleted some mp3 files and folders, then when I emptied the Recycle Bin I inadvertently answered "no" to the "are you sure you want to delete these files" question. Now they are sitting on my recent files / frequent folders page and will not delete again. When you analyze them they are 0 bytes, so not taking up any space (also may be the reason they won't delete) but they are cluttering the area and I need to get rid of them. My laptop is brand new, under warranty, but Dell support won't help me, saying it's a software issue and I have to either pay them over $100 or purchase a software warranty before they will help. I went on You Tube and found one video that demonstrated a method of deleting them through the "Command Prompt" screen, but this didn't work. This may sound like a small issue, but there are about 30 of these files and folders and they are cluttering the area...need to delete them. Help please.

A:Folders and files that will not delete

Hello and welcome!

This should be easy to resolve. The frequent folders and recent files can be switched off which will reset and clear all the items. You can then turn on again to allow new items to appear there as you use your files and folders.

A:C: 2 Program files Folders???

Hi Joey,

You will only see this in the 64 bit version of Vista. The Program Files (x86) folder is for the installed 32 bit programs, and the Program Files folder is for the installed 64 bit programs. It's just a way to help keep them organized better by MS since there are two versions of some programs installed.

A:Copy files and folders in VBS?

You may consider Shell( )ing out to XCOPY. There are command line switches that will do what you want.

Copies files and directory trees.

XCOPY source [destination] [/A | /M] [/D[:date]] [/P] [/S [/E]] [/V] [/W]
[/C] [/I] [/Q] [/F] [/L] [/G] [/H] [/R] [/T] [/U]

source Specifies the file(s) to copy.
destination Specifies the location and/or name of new files.
/A Copies only files with the archive attribute set,
doesn't change the attribute.
/M Copies only files with the archive attribute set,
turns off the archive attribute.
/D:m-d-y Copies files changed on or after the specified date.
If no date is given, copies only those files whose
source time is newer than the destination time.
/EXCLUDE:file1[+file2][+file3]...
Specifies a list of files containing strings. Each string
should be in a separate line in the files. When any of the
strings match any part of the absolute path of the file to be
copied, that file will be excluded from being copied. For
example, specifying a string like \obj\ or .obj will exclude
all files underneath the directory obj or all files with the
.obj extension respectively.
/P Prompts you before creating each destination file.
/S Copies directories and subdirectories except empty ones.
/E Copies directories and subdirectories, including empty ones.
Same as /S /E. May be used to modify /T.
/V Verifies each new file.

What exactly are hidden files and folders and why is it that a folder/file can be hidden yet I can still see it? How do you hide files? How does making a folder hidden affect the file and how it can be viewed? And if I hid a folder on my ipod would I be able to access it?

Edit: Please use proper thread titles from now on. Thanks.

A:What exactly are hidden files and folders?

I am not sure about the ipod, I have no use for them.

The hidden attributes allow you to hide the folder for other users, this is the only effect it has on the files/folders.

You have to go to the folder options and choose hide hidden folders.
Refresh or close the folders and open it back up. Then you will not see the folder.

The drawback is, that anyone who knows this and gets on your system can undo it and get your folders. This why you encrypt such folders.

edit:I forgot to mention you have to open the file/folde properties and choose the hidden attribute first then the other option in order for this to work correctly

Its sounds like you are only clicking on the attribute and not applying the other option

After uninstalling norton internet 2008 (wanting to try a different suite on trial) even though i used the removal tool, i decided to check for any files left over ( in case of wanting to reinstall), i unchecked the hidden files and folders and checked them. In documents and settings/ application data I found some symantec folders (4 accounts on pc). But i also found folders from programmes I unstalled months a go because of the security risks they posed eg Bearshare/ Limewire etc.. Is it safe to manually delete these folders? Im hesitant as they were in a hidden file. Also after i used the removal tool i followed the advice given on this website about the removal of norton in the registry( using tune up utilities 2007 instead of regedit as it has an undo button) but after search im still left with over 50 items do they all need to be deleted? ( i may want to reinstall norton at some stage ) or is it ok to leave them?

A:Hidden Files And Folders

Nope, they don't need to be deleted. They're "leftovers" that save your settings in case you choose to reinstall Norton at a later date.

Hope this aint too much babling but I just can't seem to figure this one out...
I have a Vista x64 machine where if I copy files to a USB drive then plug the USB into my Win7 x64 machine, the Win7 machine cannot see the folder/files.
If I go back to the Vista machine, move the folder into an existing folder (that Win7 can already see) it's all good, even if I copy the folder back out to USB root, it's still good. I got some kind of security issue somewhere? Any thoughts?
Happens vice versa too.
Also, an XP Machine can see the same as Win7 but not the ones Vista sees, a Vista x86 can't see the Vista x64 files either.
So it's definitely in the Vista x64 machine.
I'm so confused
Both x64 machines are Ultimate versions. My XP and other Vista Home are both 32bit. Not too sure what else to tell ya.
On the x64 machines the USB is NTFS mounted (I already tried changing that to a letter), on the other two machines the USB just grabs a drive letter.
I have no other sharing issues and have many USB drives plugged into the Vista x64 and all other machines see the files. Only lately do new files not appear.

Hi all

Sorry if I've posted in the wrong section, could not see the correct place to post. Also this is not a virus or trojan problem, it once was, but thats now been fixed. What happened was, after removing all viruses and trojans from my computer and memory sticks, I eventually got round to looking on the net (1 year later) for a fix for the hidden folders on my memory sticks, I found the fix which was to run the cmd prompt and put
D:\>attrib.exe -r -s -h /s /d D:\*.* into that prompt, now on my first memory stick this worked great, however on the second memory stick, when hitting return instead of working, the cmd prompt said that 'D:\' is not recognised. I did not put in 'D:\' I put in
D:\>attrib.exe -r -s -h /s /d D:\*.* the same as the first time, so not sure why it has not worked. Any help would be appreciated.

OK, I should state right away that I used unhide.exe to get my computers files to reappear and have since ran MalwareBytes a couple times. For the short time since then, my computer seems to run fine, but the appearance and start menu is different than prior to the virus. So, I'm not convinced it's back to normal. I want to make sure everything is ok because I'm going to reformat my computer after I get your ok.DDS.DDS (Ver_2011-06-03.01) - NTFSx86 Internet Explorer: 6.0.2900.5512 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_16Run by Compaq_Owner at 5:52:11 on 2011-06-07Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.2494.1779 [GMT -5:00].FW: Norton Internet Worm Protection *Disabled* .============== Running Processes ===============.C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunchsvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcsC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k WudfServiceGroupsvchost.exesvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXBCES.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exesvchost.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\AppleMobileDeviceService.exeC:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exeC:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k HTTPFilterC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exeC:\Program Files\Common ... I would welcome clarification on the following, which I need to understand in relation to my Cloud services, synching, disc storage space, etc:

1. How can you tell if a folder / file has been 'made available online only' and is a Smart File'?  I have seen some files which have a description in detailed view which says 'online only' but have many other files which I have  'made online' (I hope) and which do not have this label

2. If a file is online only will the size shown in Properties be its size on the internet but not it local, PC size?

3. What does it mean when Properties reports that the file size is xyz but the size on disc is abc?

4. I have been told that if you make a folder 'online only' all sub-folders and files in it are automatically made 'online only' but I have folders made 'online only' which contain folders / files which appear to be available off-line, eg. in their context menu the option to make them online is still shown

5. Is it normally the case that with a Cloud service you can choose to sync in both directions, or if you want you can sync in one direction only, either 'up' or 'down'?

A:Some questions on folders and files

I don't know anything about Smart Files or online files, but I can answer #3 and maybe #5

3 - newer disks have large® "units" - and they store the bits and bytes there until one is full, then they move on to the next one.  Eventually the end one isn't completely filled up.  This isn't a real big deal with a single file, but it can add up to a lot of space if you have a lot of files.

5 - Each cloud service has different software/services/procedures, so you'll have to check each individual situation to be sure
