Please Help! Multiple Desktops, Separate Paths, Same Account

Q: Please Help! Multiple Desktops, Separate Paths, Same Account

Hey All,

I'm hoping someone here can help me - I'll try and be specific as I can, however though I generally know my way around a computer I'm by no means an expert.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium, 32-bit SP1

Okay. Onto the problem. Somehow I've managed to create two (or more?) desktops (not just shortcut icons or copies). I don't know How, or When, so experimenting with "restore" times is kind of a moot point.

One I assume is at the regular path, accessible through "my computer" on the left hand side under "folders". I can't get it's exact path because if I right-click on it and go to "properties" it opens up "Control Panel>Personalization". Opening the "desktop" via that path shows the icons/shortcuts I currently have on my "visual desktop". ("Visual Desktop = the desktop I see on my screen). If I add a new folder to my "Visual Desktop", this is where it shows up, not in any of the following locations.

Another one is accessible through my user account name after I open up "computer" under desktop (path: C:\Users\*username). The files shown here are various shortcuts, none of which are actually on my "visual desktop".

Yet another one - the one that brought this entire problem to my attention - is accessible under my videos folder. Anyway, if I open the "Desktop" via this path, it shows one shortcut as well as one folder, both of which are on my "visual desktop".

This whole problem came to my attention when I was attempting to delete a folder in my videos. Obviously I can't delete it the typical way (right-click, delete) because my "desktop" is in use...I also tried removing the directory in command prompt (accessed through the start menu), though I'm not sure why since my desktop is still obviously "in use". (That was a Duh moment). Command prompt didn't come up with an error (file is in use/not accessbile) but simply didn't remove it.

I've thought about booting up in DOS and deleting it that way, however I'm concerned for two reasons:
1) Is this seriously going to mess up Vista/My desktop? and
2) Assuming DOS is successful and doesn't screw up Vista/Desktop: If I've (somehow, unknowingly) altered the default path for "Desktop" will I ultimately re-create the desktop icon in my videos folder the next time I add/alter my desktop?

So, my ultimate questions are;
1) How do I ensure the desktop path is correct (and what IS the correct path?)?
2) Is there a different way to go about deleting the "desktop" in my videos folder, other than DOS? and if not:
3) What are the chances I'm going to screw up my system?

I *really* don't want to reinstall Windows as a solution unless absolutely necessary.

Anyways, thanks for bearing with me in this super-long post. I've tried to be as detailed as possible but if you need more information just let me know.

A: Please Help! Multiple Desktops, Separate Paths, Same Account

Hello Lara,

First off, I had to report the post for personal info, as well as the movie listing. If you don't remove it, a mod will.

Second, you mentioned a second desktop. I am a little confused. Do you mean that you literally have a second desktop location? I know that the desktop is located under your user name, for example C:\Users\Lordbob75\Desktop.

There might also be another location, but it is under system files I believe. Can you describe your problem a little better perhaps?

We appreciate the amount of info given in this post though.

As for a solution, try putting in your Vista disk and clicking "Repair"" This is NOT a reinstall, it merely fixes registry errors. This might clear some of that up.

My wife and I have two separate accounts in XP, and I notice that whatever I put on my desktop also appears on hers. Is it supposed to be that way? I was hoping that we could have our own desktop configurations.

A:Separate desktops?

You both can have your own desktop setup, but it takes some doing. I believe you will have to enable a service, set up each user with their own profile, then set up each desktop the way you want it. There is also a registry hack that will not allow the user to manipulate the desktop if your interested.

I am not sure on the steps for this, but I will let you know when I get it together..

I have my PC in the office, connected to a 19" monitor through the VGA port, and a 720P plasma in the living room, connected with the HDMI port. I can do dual desktops, but whenever I turn off my TV, or change the input source, Windows disables the second desktop, and my icons all move back to the 19" monitor. How do I do the following?

Setup 1 (ideal): Totally separated desktops: the monitor is controlled by the wired mouse and keyboard, the HDTV is controlled by the wireless mouse and keyboard, the cursors cannot move from one desktop to the other.

Setup 2 (acceptable): Lock the icons in place so that, even when Windows thinks the monitor has been disconnected (in the case of a power off), it will hold the icon locations on the HDTV extended desktop.

Thanks,

A:Dual monitor, either totally separate desktops or lock icon positions?

You could set the dual monitor setup to replicate the desktop on both screens? So you can have the 19" monitor turned off and get the same desktop on your plasma vice versa. Or do you want the dual monitor functionality, so you have stuff on your 19" monitor that you don't want on your plasma?

I have attached a second monitor to my laptop which runs Windows 7, however, I need to set different resolutions for different monitors, because the display does not fit to fill the screen on both monitors.

It is also noted that the display is replicated, and I would like to have the effect of having different desktops e.g. being able to use different applications such as debugging code on one monitor on an IDE such as Visual Studio, and, viewing the browser on the other monitor.

Currently it does not seem possible since the behavior seems to be that the same resolution is replicated on both monitors.

Are more than two monitors supported?

A:Working with multiple monitors does not allow multiple desktops

Set it to extended mode instead of duplicate, then you can use both independently.

Hi everyone,

I got a new HP Pavilion laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. When I booted it up for the first time, there was already an administrator account on it named after the company who sent me the laptop. I renamed the user account and the computer to my name. Unfortunately, this change was not taken over by my profile folder or the profile folder paths. For example, if I go to the C drive and to "Users", then there's the Public folder and underneath it is my profile folder (which has a lock icon) - stuck with the previous name. I can access it and see the picture, music, desktop etc. folders with my stuff in them. I wanted to save a Word Document, and the username in the path was the old one, so that's how I first noticed the issue.

I searched and asked around and found out that I'd have to create a new user account and delete the old one to fix this issue. I came across two sets of instructions. I found one set over here in this Microsoft document for Windows 7 - it is about replacing a corrupted user profile, and it says that one would need THREE user accounts to do it...Very confusing...obviously, my user profile is not corrupt, but it looks like I have to replace it:

The second set of instructions I came across simply said that I'd have to do the following:

1) rename my current account back to the old unwanted name
2) create a new administrator account with my name and log into it

i'm sending this out from my iphone, so please excuse the format and lack of capital letters ;-)
i got a new hp pavilion laptop; os is windows 7 home premium 64-bit. when i booted it up the first time, there was already an administrator account on it, bearing the name of the company who had sent me the laptop. i renamed the user account and the computer to my name; but the paths connected to the user profile and the user profile itself (under "users" on the c drive) still have the old name. i did some reading and it seems that one has to rename the account back to the old name, then create a new administrator account with the name one wants and transfer the profile from the old account to the new one, then delete the old account if everything is working well; however, i believe that these instructions are rather for windows xp than for windows 7, and i have no idea how to copy a profile. i am not a computer geek and cannot fiddle around with the registry, and i'm new to windows 7. so: how can i rename the profile paths and my profile folder to MY name - or is it impossible to change, and will i just have to live with it? i also hope that if the situation cannot be changed, then this is simply a cosmetic 'bug' and won't cause any problems.

thanks in advance for your time and patience

I often "misplace" files that turn up later in different places. When I enter data into a file, I never know where it will show up... or not! E.g., there are at least 4 Desktops in File explorer and they don't always have the same information buried in them. Some files seem lost and suddenly they turn up in a place with the the same sub-adress.1) Desktop2) Desktop/my name/Desktop3) Desktop/This PC/Desktop4) Desktop/This PC/LOCAL DISK (C:)/Users/my name/DesktopHow can I simplify this so that when I put something in I can count on it being in just ONE place, and there are no folders with similar addresses where it may or may not be located? Something about the way FE is set up seems redundant but really isn't!

A:Why are there multiple Desktop folder paths in Windows 8.1?

You should be using the default Documents, Pictures, Music, and Downloads folders under your user (C:..../Users/<your name>/Documents) with shortcuts on your desktop to make them easier to open directly. Just simply look at the location it is saving things to before you click OK.You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

So I downloaded this program called Desktops from this site.
Desktops

Only after seeing it on PCMagazines Top Free Software of 2009
The Best Free Software of 2009 - Interface Enhancers | PCMag.com

I Unzipped the file and put it in to my c drive and installed.

Now, I cannot delete the Desktops folder from withing my Downloads folder. I found an Account Unknown in the file sharing section of the folder's properties. BUT WAIT, I have done my research, and I haven't deleted an account since long before I downloaded this program.

BUT WAIT, I tried to delete the unknown account anyways and it wouldn't let me do to it's inherent parent. haha that rhymed. So I went to the properties of the Downloads folder and the inherent parent of that folder is where I need to go.

But I can't see the properties of my account folder. In this case its Mike.

I have also updated my definitions on malware bytes and ran a deep scan as well as
with Vipre.

I am at a loss for words or thoughts. I have no clue how to fix this and would greatly appreciate help on this matter.

A:Account Unknown - Desktops

Welcome
With a system restore go back 3 days before you tried to improve the system. Then wait until morning, when you will be told how to proceed
System Restore - How to
Restore will remove everything that you have done. When back normal we can decide what to do with desktops
I will look into this great download and tell you how to proceed.

Dont worry, however, if your computer is operating correctly those unknow accounts are probably just the way the program operates. I think, it is best to leave the OS the way it was intended.
That is a safe Website, however.

...I was going to type up what I want to do, but I think that a post from this July sums it up pretty well. Hopefully someone will reply to it this time:

"I am using the 15" TFT as the primary display, and the 21" TV for games...this is working fine as long as I switch exclusively to the relevent display and work from there...e.g switch to TV then launch a game...

However I'd like to be able to configure the setup so that the main display remains on the 15" and I can launch games from here and they then go to the 21" TV, while the main windows desktop remains on the TFT...and if i'm being greedy, it would be good if i could somehow lock the controls to each display, so that I could keep a game on display2, while using display 1...e.g a game is playing and doesnt minimise the moment I open a window on desktop1...at the moment I have been unable to achieve this, the majority of software works fine, I just drag teh dialog box and expand it on the display I want...

But the likes of Vice City REFUSES to maximise to the second desktop...I'm using Hyrdravision and there is no individual application setting configurable for the likes of Vice City...does anyone know of any generic multiple display software which may be better than Hydra?"

I didn't post that the first time, but it is pretty much exactly the same thing I need to do now. Does anyone know if it's possible?

Windows does not offer that feature. I would love to see it implemented myself. That is a compelling feature of Linux for sure. Microsoft does have the virtual desktop manager in power toys and there are third party solutions to virtual desktops.

Hey everyone,

Could someone suggest a multiple desktop program that will give me a clean 2nd desktop (meaning that it doesnt keep the same icons and everything that are on the main desktop, if that makes any sense).

A:Multiple Desktops

the easiest thing to do would be to get a video card that supports multiple monitors. all you have to do is plug a second monitor into it and you are good to go. it will give you an extension of your desktop that can be used in exactly the same way, but if you want it clean, you simply dont put anything on it.

Another missing feature from Windows 8 is multiple desktops configuration (If I am wrong, people will soon put me right!)

I downloaded the Sysinternals Desktops.exe Desktops which works fine under XP and Windows 7, but is a partial failure under Windows 8

Although there are 4 desktops, all but the first have a black background which is not editable, and is dead - no mouse right click menu, no placement of files, no hot corners etc.

There is a transparent glass taskbar to which you can add toolbars, which if the folders contain programs or documents, the pop up menus work well, launching programs and documents. However the Taskbar is dead as far as icons, and the time is there, but not visible until the pointer hovers over where it should be, or it is clicked, when the set time and date applet appears. It is possible to drag items from the toolbars onto the taskbar and lose them in the favourites bar, which eventually I found under links>> chevrons, and the taskbar right-click menu is there with taskmanager to enable the launching of programs in the desktop.

Altogether a weird experience.

A:multiple desktops ?

Hello Paascal, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might give the free program Desktops a try to see if it may work for you for this.

Desktops allows you to organize your applications on up to four virtual desktops. Read email on one, browse the web on the second, and do work in your productivity software on the third, without the clutter of the windows you’re not using. After you configure hotkeys for switching desktops, you can create and switch desktops either by clicking on the tray icon to open a desktop preview and switching window, or by using the hotkeys.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I hope no one thinks I am being a little lazy but I have a few questions about multiple and simultaneous desktop usage with regards to windows 7 and server 2008.

At our workplace at the moment we are using a separate company to host some kind of cloud service that lets IT students (studying the basics of MS Office products) and company staff to log in to a remote desktop from any PC. Goodness knows how much the company are paying for this service but I would imagine that it would be about the same as employing someone full time.

We actually have a server with Server 2008 running on it but I have not had a really good look at it yet because of time constraints. It is just sitting there gathering dust because the previous person running the department didnít seem to have a clue how to manage the PCs on the network.

I know how to get a remote desktop running on a computer using a windows 7 operating system but you can only have 1 user account running at the same time. As soon as you attempt to remotely connect to another account on that host computer from another computer the original remote client is disconnected. That would obviously be no good if we wanted several people accessing those accounts from various computers.

Is this what server 2008 can do? In other words, can server 2008 be used to host multiple password protected desktops on remote computers on a LAN simultaneously?

We need some kind of arrangement like this because students come in on different days and ... Read more

A:Multiple/ simultaneous remote desktops

I don't know everything you need to do this. But at a minimum, you'll need to purchase licensing for terminal services. By default, all the Windows Server platforms support 2 concurrent connections. You'll have to purchase the appropriate license for the number of concurrent users you'll want to support. I think the other part is you'll also need to purchase the version of MS Office or the licensing which allows it to be used with terminal services. Not sure on this.

Is it possible to enable multiple desktops in Vista...???... Also can I have seperate desktop backgrounds on each monitor (2 or more)....??? I have no problem doing this with XP.

A:Multiple Desktops in Vista Ultimate x64

If you mean having both screens enabled? Well, for some reason, it's not automatic. You have to enable it yourself. Just go the the advanced settings tab in the customizing window. Here, I have attached a screen and put a red rectangle to show which checkbox to check so that it comes on the secondary monitor as well. Just click extend the desktop and it will work.

As for putting different backgrounds on different monitors, I don't know how to do it directly in Vista, so I use a program called Display Fusion, which I find pretty good, and you don't need to run it everytime the computer is on to keep the different wallpapers.

I purchase 2 of these desktops at the same time and have been experiencing random lock-ups on both of them over the last few months. I have updated the BIOS, done all Windows updates and have just recently upgraded them both to Windows 10......but the freezing is still evident. I would say that on average one of the 2 desktops freezes every 3-4 days and there is no pattern to what the computer is doing when it decides to lock up. When the lock-up occurs I am still able to see the screen but the mouse and keyboard inputs no longer register and I'm unable to change the Caps Lock status on the keyboard either. The only way to restore service is to either hold down the power button for 5 seconds or unplug the base unit. I have seen a few others who have posted online with similar issues but no mention of a resolution.

Not sure whether a query or some shared insight here.  Are you tapping the value of MDs or is it a matter of realising the value the Feature can be?
The ability to have Multiple Desktops can be a real asset and serve you well & be very kewl & helpful... helpful in the sense of organization & structure... can keep things neat & tidy OR not cluttered, not homogenised, not w/ a plethora of varied, unrelated stuff all clustered in one same place.
Can have a browser window in every one.  Can have various APPs & or applications in each one.  Can scan & select everything across all Desktops via Alt+Tab.  The Taskbar is accessible in every one.  And the Taskbar can display what is going on w/ all Desktops or each respective Desktop individually.

A:Making (Good) Use of Multiple Desktops(?)

I plan on using that feature on Windows 10 once I get it, but I'll only use it when I want to accomplish certain tasks. Let's say that I work on a fix for a thread on Sysnative, I always end up opening multiple Windows Explorer window, web browser and other programs. Rather than have all of them clustered with my other opened programs, I'll dedicate a desktop to it. Same for when it comes to programming: I would have my web browser, IDE, documentation, etc. open in one desktop and I would have one desktop that is casual for when I want to take a break. Once I'll have learned how to use the key combinaisons to switch from one desktop to another fast, it'll be easy.

So, here's hoping someone has a bit of experience with this subject.

Basically my question is about the capabilities of using a single monitor via the virtual desktops feature on certain games. Occasionally I'd like to be able to use a single monitor for my games, or have to as it doesn't scale well to three. So is it possible to set up virtual desktops to use a single monitor for a specific programme so that it will full-screen 1920x1080 to one monitor, still having the other two monitors active with various other windows open?

Hello, I got rid of At&t finally, and it was tied directly with Yahoo. Now Yahoo stays tied with At&t (more exactly, my old Sbcglobal.net account). I want to completely separate them and close out that old email account. I figure I can always add a new Yahoo account if I choose -- but I want to get rid of At&t completely. Please help. Dancing around on their sites does not allow me anywhere to solve the problem. And I did not call At&t since others have reported "since I have no account, they won't help".

A:how to separate Yahoo from old At&t account

I do have a Yahoo email account, but am hardly an expert.

First, the obvious:

Yahoo is a mess and is for sale the last I heard.

Yahoo email has always been an even bigger mess. Poor interfaces, not user friendly.

I've fumbled around in their interface for a couple of hours over the last 5 years and was not amused.

I do know that they will allow anyone to have more than one email address tied to a single account. I think the max is 2 or 3 and that you can't make more than one change every 6 months? Something silly like that.

Where and how to do that is not easy to find. I eventually found the location after being highly frustrated.

When I wanted a second Yahoo email address, I kept the same account and used the option to create a second address. I now have 2 Yahoo emails and could write you from either one. All email to either address shows up when I log into Yahoo email.

The best thing you can do is get rid of Yahoo, but I haven't done that myself. I just endure it because I don't often use it--maybe 2 or 3 times a month for a couple of minutes.

I refuse to go with Google for anything other than a search engine. I guess Hotmail is still around, but I've never tried it. That's Microsoft, I think.

That's why I still use an old-fashioned personal email application: Thunderbird.

If you figure Yahoo out, please write a tutorial.

If I were you, I might just abandon your current account. Walk away from it. Don't bother closing it out at all. Pretend you never even heard ... Read more

Sorry if this is brought up earlier, didn't succeed searching the forum.

What I'm looking for is the functionality in Vista similar to spaces in osx leopard, see video here for an example:

I find it a bit odd that this is not included in vista.. or have I ignored it??
Probably not because I was able to find a third party app on the web; Vista Virtual Desktop Manager at Vista Virtual Desktop Manager - Home

But unfortenatly it didn't work too well on my computer, and anyway I'm really not a fan of adding extra apps for functions that should be core functionality (read: bloating and conflicts with other programs..)

Does anyone know something about this?
Any chance this kind of functionality will be included in SP1?

Hello,
I have a Dell laptop 5721 17 " running Windows 7.
My wife has a H.P. All-in-One running Windows 8.1.

When her computer was installed, our grandson set it up and used my Microsoft account data.

I play a lot on y computer, changing things, installing, deleting, etc. She doesn't change anything... ever.

Now whenever I change something, relative to the account, on my computer it changes on her computer also.

This does not make her happy. When she is not happy, I am not happy. The neighbors are not happy. The animals in the zoo are not happy.

How do I go about separating these two computers so each has its own account?

Thank you

Which version of windows are you using?

If you are using Vista/Windows Mail, then things have changed.

Under older versions you used to be abe to set up individual identities in Outlook express. That can be done under File, Identities. Each Identity can have a password etc, so taht when they log in, they only get their e-mails etc.

This link should get you on the way on how to create identities etc

Hello,

Long story short:
I need to run 10-15 ish browser-windows of a webpage, at the same time, without the instances "knowing" about each other. They need to be as separated as if they where running on different machines/clients.
---

I want to believe this is possible, in that (for example) my old workplace had these computers in which the browsers where modified so that they where completely cut off the main system (no connection to the local system w.s.e (running on the network)).
---

My case:
In the browser-windows, on the server, there's a flash movie that's playing. It will stop if another is activated and played. I need to run multiple of these at the same time, but it's a bit tricky...

Any help on this subject is widely appreciated

I have 4 hard drives that I joined into one volume that I keep my movies/pics/music ect. on. I have purchased a new hard drive and need to remove one of the smaller ones, how can I remove the hard drive from the volume? Also will I lose any data on that drive?

Thanks

A:How to separate multiple HD that are in one volume.

Yes, you could lose data, please boot your backup DVD or USB stick and make two full image backups of your data partition before doing anything. If your OS and data is within one partition, oh well, make the two images anyway. Later, going forward, I rather you create 2 partitions, one for OS, one for data. It makes any restore of OS much less "eventful," 'cause your data will not be a part of that OS restore.

I guess this may be a tiny bit off the subject here, but I am attempting this in windows 7.

I have a program file manager tool called 'Directory Opus' that is capable of calling windows external programs and passing them the current directory the file manager is sitting on.

So far so good.

Now I want to call a cygwin (linux/unix emulator for windows) terminal with that file manager.

Checking properties on the cygwin Icon I got the path: C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -

So it is a path to a command and an argument to that command.

Actually I guess it is 2 arguments to a command since I think '-' in that position means to feed anything on STDIN to the command. At least that would be true in unix shell programming.

So using the Directory opus setup I pass this call:
'@async:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - <and here add {s}>'

So the call ends up:
'@async:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - {s}'

That call does just what it is supposed to. It passed the current file absolute address however cygwin terminal does not understand the windows path notation. If I were passing it: C:\subdir\blah\ It would just say 'No such file' Cygwin terminal wants to see /cygdrive/c/subdir/blah Or at least I think that is what is happing.

So to cut to the chase.... I'd like to put a little wrapper to Cygwin terminal in there with the code necessary to convert 'C:\subdir\blah\' to '/cygdrive/c/subdir/blah/'

But, I do not know how ... Read more

Good morning.

This may be a bit long winded for a simple question, but hear me out

I have two windows 10 computers on the same network in different rooms. One is in my bedroom, one is in the living room. My roommate's girlfriend has a 10 year old son that comes by sometimes. I like to have my pin up girls on the desktop in my room (no nudes...lol) but I keep generic desktop themes in the computer in the living room since I let other people use that one. I had to reinstall Windows 10 on the computer in the living room, and for some reason, the themes keep syncing and I can't figure out how to keep them separate (the computer also share the same Windows ID, it did it on it's own). So if I have my pin up girl theme in my room, eventually it shows on the computer in the living room. If I use a generic theme in the living room, eventually it shows in the bedroom. How do I keep these desktop themes separate?

Thanks for your time

A:Multiple OS's on separate hard drives, boot selections?

Edit the C:\boot.ini file by adding the bold line.
Change the timeout from 0 to 10 (seconds) or however many seconds you want to see the menu.
If the directory is "Windows", change \WINNT accordingly

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="C-drive Windows XP" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="X-drive Windows 2000 Pro" /fastdetect

The numbers behind multi and disk are normally (0)
rdisk(0) is master HD on primary IDE, (rdisk always starts at (0))
rdisk(1) is slave HD on primary IDE
rdisk(2) is master HD on sec. IDE
rdisk(3) is slave HD on sec. IDE

partition(1) is first partition of that disk, (partition always starts at (1))
partition(2) = second, etc.

Utilizing MS Access, is there a way to separate alpha characters from numeric characters in one field/column & create 2 separate fields/columns for each, e.g., HRES4212 to HRES [field 1] and 4212 [field 2]? I am familiar with "text to column" in Excel, but it's very laborious if the number of alpha characters is not consistently 4, as in the example above, e.g., RLC22, EWP1312, etc.

Dim x As Long

If x = 1 Then

Else

End If
End With
Set Myrange = ActiveSheet.Range("a1:a2") 'change to suit
For Each C In Myrange
Outstring = ""
Set Collection = RegExp.Execute(C.Value)
For Each RegMatch In Collection
Outstring = Outstring & RegMatch
Next
C.Offset(0, x) = Outstring
Next
Set Collection = Nothing
Set RegExp = Nothing

Hey,

I want to open multiple Excel 2007 files in separate windows because I have 2 separate monitors. This works with for example Word (just double click on two different word files) but not with Excel.
I read some work-around saying "open the first excel file by double clicking, then open an empty excel file via start button and then open the other file from within the new window."

But surely there is an easier way? For example setting folder options for Excel files?

I have Windows 7, 64-bit if that makes a difference.

Thanks

Having read the "Radified Partitioning Strategies...." thread I have finally come a long way in understanding the need and essence of proper and smart partitioning of drives...(oo how I lived in the dark ages)

However I can't figure out where to place the more demanding part of the program file folder; Should it be on the second partition of drive 1 (first beeing OS) or the second partition of drive 2 (first beeing operating system page file).

It seems logical in some way to put it on the second drive, as far as efficiency goes; drive 1 runs OS while drive 2 is smoothly running Programs, but this I am not sure of . I would definately like get the most out of Photoshop (working 100 mb files) - and Premiere in the near future.

Any tips will be highly appreciated !

Asus P5-AD2

Drive 2: 74 GB IDE

Drive 3: 120 GB Sata (file dump)

A:Program files; on separate partition or on separate drive?

You should differentiate between programs themselves and the files you are working on. The program files are loaded only once - when you start it up (or when you activate some subsystem), your documents are accessed more often - every time you save or load them.

How much are you going to use that swap file? If not that much (have plenty of RAM), then I would put the PS scratch files on the second disk with the program itself installed on the OS disk. PS end files (the images themselves) to the second partition on the first disk.

Hey guys,
(I hope I'm posting in the correct forum)

I need a moderately inexpensive computer set-up that is capable of simultaneously outputting 2 separate videos in 1080p on 2 separate large T.V.'s. (Video x on T.V. 1 and video y on T.V. 2). I'm open to either a mac based or windows based system.

What type of hardware would suffice?
What type of cable/connectors would be ideal?
What software would allow a single computer to manage this?

Thanks in advance.

A:Outputting 2 separate videos in 1080p on 2 separate large T.V.'s?

I think you can do it quite cheaply. I would use Linux as it's Very efficient at video playback. A dual HDMI output card is probably the only specific hardware you will need, most run-of-the-mill machines will provide the rest. Set up an extended desktop, drag the two instances of video player to their respective desktops and voilŗ. Not sure how the sound will work though.

Hello,
Program recommendation thread.
I need 4 virtual desktops; I have 1 monitor at 1080p, and 1 monitor at 720p. I would like the 1080p monitor to display the active virtual desktop, while the 720p monitor consistently maintains a "preview grid" of all the desktops available.

As of right now with the programs I've tried, the virtual desktops are stretching across both monitors. The preview panels cannot be consistently stuck to one monitor and not the other.

I need:
- The 4 virtual desktops to only appear on the 1080p monitor
- The preview grid to only appear on the 720p monitor
- The preview grid to always be active and open
- Preferably: To be able to crop and zoom in to which sections of each virtual desktop I want to appear in each preview grid

Which program out there would be most suitable for this? *NOTE* DexPot does not have all these fucntions
Thanks!

My question is if I do create 2 accounts. when I install a program (say iTunes)  will it also be available on her side when she logs into her account?  Or would we both have to install the program for it to work?

thx

A:multiple account on same computer???

If you install a program in admin it will be available to all users. Some programs offer the option to install only for the user installing the program or for everyone on the computer. I  would advise you set up a limited user account for browsing the internet as this can go a long way to avoiding malware infections.

The problem now is when the owner of the PC tries to signon as anyone other than the Administrator Account I did my work from, Windows will display "Loading your personal settings" then immediately change to "Saving your personal settings" and log the account off without even going to the desktop. I haven't had a chance to trouble-shoot this in person yet but I'm a bit lost as to what may have happened to cause this, especially when I only used the one Administrator Account.

We have tried IMAP accounts, but they seem to have a lag time, so multiple people will respond to the exact same email. What are my best options here? Now when I send email it always sends FROM the additional account even though it is NOT the default. Choosing the original default account from the accounts list makes no difference.

If I delete the second account I can send from the original account again.

If I add a different additional PO3 account the same thing happens.

I really didn't want to go back to OL from Thunderbird but I want a task list and calendar in the same app.

If anyone can help me with this problem I would be grateful. Otherwise, can someone recommend me an email client that includes a task list and calendar that can cope with multiple accounts?

Greetings,

I have been presented with an interesting work order. An elementary school who purchases their machines from us recently got a few dozen Windows 8 x86 tablets from us, and they really don't want to have to configure every single one of them as far as parental controls and account limitation goes.

I know that Windows 7 had Easy Transfer for copying accounts to another machine, but does Windows 8.1 have a similar utility that will copy over the user profiles along with the account limitations? If this isn't possible, would cloning the entire drive to each machine work? I know that in previous versions of Windows, this can cause issues with product keys which I can fix, but being unsure about Windows 8 activation, secure boot, and other possible issues, I come to the forums asking guidance.

Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I have 4 gmail and one ISP email accounts operating with Mozilla Thunderbird. I use my cell phone as a modem with GSM or 3G connection. I get totally confused with multiple messages - unable to send connection timed out, unable to send to sent folders. Mails in outbox can remain for days without my being able to send. Sometimes unable to save as draft. Result - I don't know whether messages have been sent or not. Sometimes lose messages completely. Read incoming messages may be recieved two or three times before being finally marked as read - even when I mark them as read!
The problems may be with our 'third world' connections but I believe that there are problems with Thunderbird. Has anyone had the same problem? More importantly, what is the solution - apart from going back to Outlook or handling each gmail account separately via google. Reluctant to do that since I only established multiple accounts because of Thunderbird's ability to use common boxes.

In our 3 man office, we use a mixture of Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007. We don't have exchange server. We have an email account that is our "service" account. Right now, whenever someone needs to send an email using the "service" account, we have to wait for the pc to be free and then send email from there. I know the pst file is not shareable. But, can someone suggest how we can have one email account that is accessible by multiple users and have the incoming and outgoing emails located in one files? Thanks.

A:How to access one email account by multiple users

You also want this to work across multiple PCs, not only multiple users, right?

If it is IMAP email there is really no problem. No need to worry about one file or set of file, because each computer will be synced with the email server.

If it POP mail you may be able to to it, but I do not know Outlook to say for sure. It would, of course, involve designating one PC as the host, share the files, and then redirect Outlook on the other PCs to use those shared files.

Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping someone will be able to shed some light on an issue I'm having with Outlook 2010 concerning multiple email accounts.

I run a small home based business and have 3 seperate web mail address ([email protected], [email protected] and [email protected]) To save time I wanted to have my email managed by Outlook 2010 instead of having to log into the 3 accounts to check on new messages.

I set up the first account (myname) in Outlook easily and can send and recieve emails to that address. I then set up new accounts in Outlook for [email protected] and [email protected], by going to 'File' and 'Add Account'.

Each account name appears as a separate entity on the left side of Outlook, with it's relevant name followed by Inbox etc. However, the inboxes for the 2 new accounts only contain emails for the [email protected] inbox and I'm not recieving email for the 2 new accounts. The server test didn't flag any errors either. I have looked in 'Account Settings' and 'Data Files' and each account has it's own seprate data file such as C:\Users\My Computer Name\Documents\Outlook Files\[email protected] but I can't figure out how to make the incoming mail for each address go into their respective separate inboxes in Outlook.

I'm running Vista Ultimate (64) on my desktop and Windows 7 (64) on my laptop and have the same issue on both machines.

Any help will be greatly appreciated and will hope... Read more

Subject: Using multiple signatures IN REPLIES for one windows live mail account.

Can someone please tell me which settings I need to change to make windows live mail let me select from various signatures I have set up for just one windows live mail account WHEN I AM REPLYING to email?

WLM will only let me either assign a default signature to the specific account or if I check the box to NOT use a signature and try to add one via the insert dropdown box, the signatures are greyed out.

I went to Tools | Options | Signatures and UNCHECKED the box that says "Add signatures to all outgoing messages".

Then, I clicked the default signature and clicked "Advanced". I checked the box for the account I wanted the default signature associated with, because the "Advanced Signature Settings" dialog box says,

"Check the account(s) for which you would like to use signature ADF graphical (my sig name). Only one signature may be selected for an account, and accounts with no signature will use the default signature."

I clicked OK, Apply and OK.

Then, I tried to reply to a message. I placed the cursor in the message body and clicked "insert" and the word "signature" was bold. I could only select it, instead of it showing a choice of the other signatures I have set up.

When I CREATE A NEW MESSAGE, the signature option works the way I want it to. Meaning, I can select w... Read more

I'm wondering if the option to relocate account folders such as Documents, Pictures etc. in Vista is possible with the setup I have in mind.

I have multiple PCs on my network and want to relocate the corresponding account folders from each PC - i.e. MyAccount from PC1 & MyAccount from PC2 - to the same locations on a NAS, thus whatever changes are made on one will be reflected on another - giving a kind of Active Directory 'impression'.

Example: Go to Documents and select Properties > Location > Move, and relocate directory to NAS. Do the same for corresponding account/directory on another PC and relocate to same location on NAS.

I want to know whether relocating directories from two separate directories/accounts/PCs to the same location on the NAS will cause problems, or whether files will simply be accessable from either account/PC.

If it's possible, will there be any permission issues (Windows and/or NAS) and could such relocation still be done (even if some tweaking is necessary) for directories such as Favorites, Contacts, Links etc?

I work at a company (500+ employees) and on one of our XP machines we run Microsoft Outlook 2003. We used to have it setup so when you started Outlook, it prompted for a Username and Password, and anyone could use their Exchange login to access their email. After we reformatted the computer, I can no longer get this to work. It only lets me log on to a specific exchange account that I have setup in in the "Email Account" settings. It still prompts for a username and password, but only the account that is set up logs in. It rejects any other login. All of us work off the same server and the same Domain and it was extremely convenient that anyone could log on to their email from this machine. How can i get this functionality back? Is there a setting I am missing?

Essentially I want to be able to access any account on our internal exchange server (one at a time, not simultaneously) without setting up each account individually.

Thanks.

Hi,

This is my first post. I installed windows 8 last night, not knowing all that much about it and realize its going to take a bit of getting used to. I'm upgrading (actually built a new computer, so its actually a fresh install) from a win 7 box that my wife and I share. We typically use a single user account, with auto login-- basically no or minimal security. She checks her email and facebook in a browser, and I'll do the same. I'm trying to figure out what's best for us with windows 8.

I want be able to try out and use the new interface and live tiles, but I suspect that given that we have different personal accounts for email, social networking, and such- it probably makes sense for us to have two separate windows accounts-- in fact, I'm curious if there is a way to have two sets of email/calendar live tiles on a single login account. Is this the case?

If I decide to use two separate accounts for win 8, instead of a single account, is there a way to make it easy to switch between users without needing to enter a password? (I suppose the answer will depend on whether the accounts are password protected to begin with; right now, I've got my account setup as a windows account w/ password).

Thanks.

A:Home computer: single account or multiple accounts?

I've been setting up 2 separate accounts for the past 2 weeks and I am nearly finished. The problem is I had to set up 2 new accounts on Outlook so as to be able to login and administer both and for each of us to login separately. The problem occurred when trying to separate emails for each other. I have had to login all our accounts on the web such as Amazon ebay etc, and give them each separate and new email addresses. Make no mistake this has to be done as in the future things will get very complicated having one email address for two people. Now it's finally done no probs.....

Ok, so this may seem like a simple, stupid question at first, but it's not.

I have a HTPC/NAS/Server PC in my living room. It is hooked up to my TV and my Onkyo 7.1 receiver though HDMI with a optical cable for audio. All that was kinda useless, just saying.

System Specs:
AMD A8-3880D @4.9ghz on aircooling @1.35v
8GB DDR3 @2133mhz
12TB of data storage
64GB OS SSD
Mini ITX AS-Rock motherboard
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

So here's my situation. I have 2 user profiles on my HTPC, one is strictly for media. I run XBMC, Google Chrome, a few games like GW2 and Minecraft, and Spotify on this profile. That is it, I have access to everything else locked out, because my friends like to mess with me and change settings.

Then I have my Server user. I run 5 minecraft servers that normally have around 50 people on them all together, and a ventrilo server. Along with my torrent program, and other various server apps running in the background.

I have my PC set to automatically log into my HTPC profile when windows boots. I also have my server profile set to start the 5 Minecraft Servers, along with every other app, at log in.

The issue is, my power tends to go out a lot. I have bad lines running into my apartment and my power company is working on it. I have it set to if there is A/C power loss, the PC turns back on once it is restored.

I want it set, so that when the PC boots back up, it will log in my HTPC profile and take it to the desktop, and at the SAME TIME, login my Server p... Read more

I know the paths for these OS' since I use them:

Could some kind souls please tell me what the 32bit paths are for:

And for Windows 7 also would be nice:

A:How to make xp app paths key available

Sounds like a permissions issue of some kind.

Right click App Paths then click Permissions
Administrators and System should have Full Control and Read access, Power Users should have Read and Special, and Users should have Read access. Creator Owner should have Special. These should all be greyed out, meaning they are inherited.

Looking for a way to add a single file to an existing .ZIP file, but need to specify the path within the existing file structure.

Example - I ZIP a directory and it's subs with all of their files. It has about 6 different subs and each of them have up to 10 subs of their own.
C:\WEBSHARE\WWWROOT\PE\SUB1\file1.asp

I need to add 1 single file and tell it that the path I want it to go to is:
C:\WEBSHARE\WWWROOT\PE\SUB1\file2.asp

BUT - the file is not coming from the same directory on the system being used to create the ZIP.

A:Paths , Librabries ?

You need to remember that library's only point to the actual file somewhere on the network or on your own machine in the "user" files. If you need to delate something from the library you should delate the file from the actual source "my pictures" My documents" "my music".

But there is a way to make it work like you want.

Just go into Windows Media Player, choose the "organize" tab then "options" then choose the Library tab and set it to "delate files from the computer when delated from the Library. Although I believe that only works if you are delating files from Library of the machine that contains the source files.

That should allow for delating from the Library, but only from the machine that the files reside on, I don't believe it will work accross the network. It think it still works best if you delate from the file source instead of the Library.

Attachment 171583

I moved them back to it's original place. I want to be able to move them a separate partician. I know that the problem has something to do with paths being incorrect.

When I click on the start menu and on my username icon it opens up my real user folders and not Libraries. I wonder if this is a clue. I have returned the start menu customizations to default and it still opens my user folders. Can someone help me figure this out?

Thanks.

Hi ariel5345

Have a look at this - Start Menu User Folder Buttons - Open to Users Instead of Libraries The second set of .reg files will reset your start menu open locations.

This should help put your user folders back to their default location - User Folders - Restore Default Location

Follow this excellent tutorial to help move your user folders successfully - User Folders - Change Default Location
