Printer properties cannot be changed...

Q: Printer properties cannot be changed...

Hi

I've got Vista Ultimate 32bit installed and a Brother MFC-9045CDN printer.

I've installed the printer driver twice (is supported) one for b&w printing, one for color printing. The user does not have permissions to manage the printer and therefore cannot change the properties.

Unfortunately when I change the properties using the Administrator account they are still not changed when the user accesses the printer. They are only changed for the Administrator.

How can I change the printer properties for all users by using the Administrator?

Thanks for your help.

Hello i Have the above problem while I try to share a printer on a domain network.
My windows firewall (localy) is also damage, is that the problem that I have to solve first?

Windows 8  - cannot share a printer error message appears "[Window Title] Printer Properties  [Main Instruction] Printer settings could not be saved.  There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper.   [OK]

A:Windows 8 - cannot share a printer error message appears "[Window Title] Printer Properties [Main Instruction] Printer settings could not be saved. There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper. [OK]

You may need to reinstall the printer. Remove the printer driver from Control Panel\Programs and Features, then add the printer from Devices and Printers.

Please note that if the printer driver is not in the list in Devices and Printers, I suspect that the printer is currently not compatible with Windows 8. In this case I suggest you contact the printer manfuacturer for more information.

I did something colossally stupid. The screen size of my laptop was magnified, everything was larger, so I went into screen resolution and tried to change the resolution. It only gave me one option (800x600) so I went into the advanced settings and tried to adjust that. Apparently that was the worst thing I could do. I went into the properties of the monitor and adjusted something that I thought I knew what it was but clearly I did not. Yikes. The screen went black and never came back on. I tried hooking up an external monitor but it says Out of Range. I tried restarting it and booting in safe mode but not even the bios screen or anything shows when it is restarted. I have a Dell Latitude D830 running Windows 7.

A:can photo properties be changed?

Open the pictures in an image editor and save them with a
different file name and save as the GIF file type.
Using a different name will leave the original intact and the GIF
extension should be compatable for upload.
Depending on your version of windows, you can use the paint program.
For instance,in windows 7,click start, type paint in the seach box,
then click the paint link.

After having setup successfully Win 7 Pro some years ago printing worked fine for several pdf printers
and connected USB laser printers.

Then, recently, I must have changed something accidentially in System.

When I now want to print (e.g. a Word doc or web page from Firefox) it doesn't work anymore.

EVERY printer does not work!

Further investigations revealed that the printer ports are vanished in printer Proprties dialogs.
Its completely empty!

Have a look at the attached snapshot.

I don't know which event or action caused the printer port deletion.
Maybe a new Win Patch or an uninstallation of driver or a registry key adding.

However re-installation of printer drivers does not help since the required underlying ports are gone.

How can I re-install them again?

Is there a manual Registry add script?

got some kind of Computer virus

maybe not so much of a virus as some kind of Kiddie script.

it has changed the properties in windows XP so now when i left click on an icon .... the find target info screen pops up.

it still right click like normal ..... in fact, if i right click on it and choose "open" then it's fine.

it left clicks like normally within my browser and within other programs
it only does it on my desktop icons ... if a create a new desktop shortcut/icon it doesn't work correctly. If i create a shortcut anywhere other than my desktop it works like normal.
if i actually go into the folders and click an application .Exe it opens like normal.

any suggestions about how to change it back .... its the only change i found so far.

sorry if i didn't explain it completely enough ... feel free to ask for more information.

I did something dumb. The screen resolution on my Dell Latitude D830 was changed to 800x600 and it wouldn't allow me to change anything. I went into the advanced settings and on the troubleshoot tab I changed the driver settings because I am an idiot. As soon as I hit enter the screen went black and I couldn't get anything. I tried to connect to an external monitor, and it said the resolution was too low/high and another said output is out of range. I hard reset the computer and while plugged into my TV got the message:
RTC mode fixed - Time and date may be wrongInvalid configuration information - please run SETUP programTime-of-day not set - please run SETUP programStrike F1 key to continue, F2 to run setup utility Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics.
When I hit F1 it started Windows in either repair mode or normally. I did this and re-installed the driver from Dell, but when I restarted the computer it would freeze whenever it gets to the welcome screen. If I hit F2 after a hard reset it goes into the BIOS setup (I think is what it is) and when I exit that the screen goes black. When I hit F5 the screen goes black. I have no clue what to do. I was resigned to just re-installing Windows but I can't exit the BIOS after I changed the Boot menu to restart the computer to boot from CD drive. Sorry to be long, just wanted to be thorough. Thank you very much for any help.

Hello,

This issue already happened in Consumer Preview of Windows 8, but after installing the Release Preview I still see this.
I have a WeTab 32GB tablet to run Windows 8.

After installing Windows 8 CP I had to install Mobile Partner software in order to connect to 3G. After connecting once the connection showed up in the "Networks" part of the "Settings" charm. Is was shown as a broadband connection. Tapping it once enabled me to connect and check the box to connect automatically. If I choose the "Properties" I was able to set it as a metered connection. This all happened in the Metro UI.
If I went to the "Wireless" tab of the "PC Settings" the connection was showing up as "Mobile Broadband" device.

For some reason (I am not sure what changed) at some point I don't see the connection in the "Wireless" tab of the "PC settings" anymore. Next to that the icon in the "Networks" charm has changed (it shows a phone). Tapping it once only enables me to connect. Tap and hold to view the connection properties sends me to the classic Windows desktop where a classic properties screen is being displayed.

I am not able to select to connect automatically.

I was hoping this would have changed after installing the Release Preview. But after doing so and installing the Mobile Partner software it automatically included my settings. So I still have this issue. How can I change this back?

I want to change the printer properties to print black and white draft one time, so that I do not have to change it everytime I print something.
Under 98, I knew how to do this... I could change the properties under control panel. But under 2000, it doesnt give me the draft black and white options in the control panel?
Any ideas how I can change the settings so I dont have to change them everytime I print?

Hi everyone,

I've scoured the internet for an answer to my problem and have come up with nothing so I figured I'd post here to get some help. I have a 12 computer network running with a shared printer. To shut off printing capabilities for one day, I went to each computer and went into the printer properties, security tab and clicked on deny permission for printing.

Now when I want to undo that setting, it won't even let me go into the properties or preferences for the printer. It gives me an "Access Denied." I've tried stopping and resetting the spool service but to no avail. I've tried to go through every property and option on the printer server options and the network hub computer to restore access but nothing works. Do I have to completely take down the whole network and make a new one? Any help would be appreciated.

I am looking for a way to stop users from accessing the Printer Properties, specifically when going to File > Print in an application and then clicking on the Properties button next to the printer name.

I have tried using permissions, but they are insufficient. I have also looked through the group policy settings.

I have even used Sysinternals Regmon utility to try and lock down sections of the Registry that are opened when the user goes to this dialogue box, but the problem here is that the changes are made using the spoolsv.exe and this is running as SYSTEM and not the user.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Hello --
I have a clean install of Win7 Professional (32-bit).. installed Adobe Reader 9.. installed Win7 SP1 and all necessary and recommended updates.. updated Reader to v9.5.5 (this is the only/latest version supported by some of our company software).. There
is nothing else installed on this machine.

The problem: When I open IE10, click on a pdf link (the pdf displays properly in the browser), click the Print icon in the upper-left, click Properties in the Print dialog, the Properties dialog comes up and then freezes.  The tabs, buttons,
and mouse pointer graphically change, but clicking does nothing.  Clicking the underlying Print dialog box makes the Properties box flash, so it's not totally locked, but just unresponsive to clicks.  The only way to close the dialog box
is to stop the iexplore process in taskmgr.  This happens with any printer selected (tested on local and network printers, and even MS XPS Doc Writer, and Fax).

I can save the pdf and print from Reader directly with no problem, and I understand that I can deselect "Display pdfs in browser" in Reader options, however, those workarounds won't satisfy the users.

I'm at a loss as to what could be causing this or how to proceed further in troubleshooting this..  Can anyone lend a hand please?
Thanks.

ON the surface, it sounds to me as if you have a corruption of system files. The problem may be more extended than that, especially with some of the viruses around today.

A few things you can try:

Trend Micro's Housecall- http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

An online virus scanner. Takes a while to load, esp. over dialup, but is good for a quick check.

System Restore:

Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore. In the program that pops up, chose "Restore my computer to an earlier time." Click next. Then on the calendar that pops up, chose a date that has a bold number and is a day before the problems started happening. Click next, follow directions. You will have to reboot.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/plan/faqsrwxp.mspx has more info.

System File checker...
Start->Run->Command

In the box that pops up put in "sfc /scannow" without the quotes. Press enter. When it finishes, reboot the machine.

See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=310747 For more info.

Also be sure to run a scandisk on your harddrive and to check for bad sectors just in case.

Let us know what you try and what results you get.

Hope this helps! BTW- Welcome to Techspot!

I tried to print a coupon from a commercial website, but instead got a message that my printer properties had a setting of "Keep printed documents" that needed to be unchecked before I could print the coupons.

Okay, so I went to the printer properties via the control panel and unchecked that specific box (under the advanced tab), clicked the "Apply" button, and then clicked the "OK" button.
The problem is, this change wouldn't seem to take effect, or hold. Even when I immediately reopened the properties page the checkmark was again there...unchanged. I've sent off a request to Brother already, but they only have business hours and I may not hear from them util Jan. 2, or later.

Have you check the defaults on the front control panel of the printer? If the printer thinks that there is not the correct paper in tray two, then it will go to the next tray that it thinks has the correct paper.

English is not my native tongue, I apologize for any misspells or similar in advance.

I?m connected to a Konica Minolta C224 network multifunction printer. I have never had any similar issues with any other of my printers.

Let me also say I work in traditional Desktop view.

I have no issue printing, not once did it refuse a print job. Issue below are not tied to a specific software, I?ve experienced it in software from at least Microsoft, Autodesk, Adobe, Foxit?

When opening Print Dialog I am mostly not allowed to go to Printer Properties/Printer Advanced Settings. I say mostly because every now and then I am allowed. When hitting the Properties button my system freezes. A popup dialog box appears stating different things but the last couple of times it has been ?A RPC (Remote Procedure Call) could not get through? (Or similar ? remember: I?m not using an English system). I hit OK. At this point the software is frozen and locked ? I have to go via Task Manager and Kill Task. Meanwhile, all other running programs are not affected.

So the story above could just as well include a slightly different popup dialog box message but the problem is the same. I can always print with my standard settings but if I want for example multicolour or duplex I have to have a separate printer installation for that.

So if I go to my Control Panel -> Units and Printers I do actually face the exact same problem. I enter C224 Printer Settings but if I now try to go to Printer Properti... Read more

My MIL printed her Avon invoice to a Quicken PDF printer??? And now she can't switch it back. I don't remember well enough to talk her through it and she needs it pretty bad. She's 80 and doesn't really understand what has happened and she lives a long way from here. Can someone give me a play by play to restore her HP Printer? In the control panel it shows two printers one is a PDF and the other is her HP. The HP shows "Not Ready". It has been too long for me and I don't have an XP machine here at the house to look at. I just thought I could have her delete the PDF printer but everytime she prints her Avon stuff, it will probably happen again. She says she has tried to print numerous things today and they just keep going to a queue.

Hello,

My printer worked fine up until a few days ago. It is an HP B210a setup over the network with it's own IP address. My roommate started printing on it without asking me. He said it was an "accident" but I'm not sure how that could be the case. Anyways, I tried searching for a solution, like a password and in my haste I changed the permissions without thinking first. I made ChaCha(admin), me, have full permission and denied everyone else. Boom, printer no longer showed up in devices and printers. Spent all day yesterday installing and uninstalling the drivers. Used HP's troubleshooting utilities to no avail. When my roommate came home and turned on his computer a few days later, the print jobs I had sent started printing through his computer. He removed the device from his computer but that didn't help either.

The printer shows up under Device Manager>Imaging Devices but not under Devices and Printers. HP's diagnostic utility comes up with 2 errors, the first is that the driver is conflicting which makes no sense since I am downloading the driver straight from their website, using their software, and two it shows the printer as offline. I've used the recommended software etc., to try to do a fresh install. The printer shows up when you go to print something but as offline. Did my roommate hijack my printer or did I mess up by changing the permissions to only me. Why, as the admin, can I not see/communicate with my printer? Is there a way to set the permiss... I am on a small network, where the printer is connected to a PC (WinXP). The laptop (Vista) is on the network. The printer is an HP Deskjet 5550 that is "shared" on the network.

I installed the Vista drivers for the printer on the laptop.

No issues with connecting to the printer and just plain printing.

My problem is when I want to save ink and alter the printer's printing properties. ( I am usually printing an email or from Word 2007.) So when I go to Print and choose the network printer, then click on Properties... the panel never appears until after I click on "OK" [to print].

I tried to change the settings another way through the Control Panel -- Printer -- [right click network printer] -- Properties.

Under the "General" tab, I click on the "Printing Preferences" button and the panel flickers, like another window was supposed to pop up but doesn't. When I close the network printer properties, I see another panel appear for less than a second then disappears.

Hi all!

I use PDFCreator, which is a neat and free piece of software. However, it has problems properly printing under some conditions. The easy fix is to open Printers, left click PDFCreator, pick "Printer properties", go "Ports", "Configure Ports", tick "Run as user".

Under XP, this fixed it all, with 7 I get the following error: "An error occurred during port configuration. Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000001)."

How can I bypass it?

Thanks!

Hi;

I have a folder of home videos that I back up to a USB key with Syncback. The key is nearly full and I'm trying to reduce the size of that folder. But here's the thing; If I right-click on my 'Home videos' folder and select 'Properties', it tells me I have 564 files in 85 folders, taking 2.67Gb.

However, if I open the folder and search for *.* to show all the files, then select all, right-click, 'Properties', it tells me I have 2224 files in 249 folders taking 6.41Gb. Still, at the bottom of the Windows Explorer window it says 649 items selected.

This is the case on both the folder in My Documents on the PC and also the matching folder on the USB key.

Treesize also shows 2.67Gb for both folders.

In fact as far as I can figure, what with everything else on the same USB key, there wouldn't even be room for a 6Gb folder.

I've tried showing both hidden and system files and folders but there's nothing extra to see.

Can anyone please explain this anomaly? I must be doing something wrong but I can't figure it out!

Hi guys, so I have a little problem, I've downloaded FileTypesMan because I wanted to change the .exe files appearance on my computer.

I did this using this program - all .exe file icons changed, however, with them changed ALL the shortcuts to all the programs that I have on my laptop - now they all look the same.

I can't figure out how to change it all back.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
THanks

this is very confusing to me ive never seen it so i found a way back onto the internet by using a shortcut i had.

not even sure how to start this. i dont know exactly what i did but everything was changed. i was going to try to watch a movie thats on my laptop, it said 'avi' and when i clicked on it nothing happened. i dragged it into itunes to see if it would play there, nope. i right-clicked it, picked 'open with' VLC, still nothing. right clicked it again and chose windows media center, nothing happened. i tried transfering the folder with the option available in media center, still didnt play.

when i closed media center i saw all my desktop stuff was changed to open with media center, i knew immediatly i screwed up pretty bad somewhere. i right clicked internet explorer and changed it to open with internet explorer, it then changed everything to open with internet explorer. when i clicked on internet explorer it didnt open, but it did open the download bar as if i downloaded it. it says "Internet Explorer.Ink" or .lnk. when i click open, the window comes up but closes right away.

can someone help me by telling me how to get everything back to normal?

A:[SOLVED] changed one thing to open with a different application and it changed everyt

It sounds like what you've done is associate a .lnk file (shortcut type) with an application and now all shortcuts will run with that application. The avi file you were referring too may be just that as well: a shortcut.

This has also been known to be caused by a malware infection, in which case if you suspect it, you'll have to report it to our security team in the appropriate Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help subforum.

This may help with the situation.

I have tried system restore back one week did not work, I was following ASK tech page guide and downloaded REGSERVO program came back with 6800 errors and wanted 39.00, well as you know the economy is in the tank and I do not have the extra money, but i do have the extra time if someone could walk me through what to do.

I use Norton utilities and clean the drive/registries/and explorer weekly.
Please send any advise possible
Thank you

A:sudden error message CPU has been changed or CPU Ratio changed failed

REGSERVO is a Rogue program that tells you, you have problems and "we will fix them for you for $39.00!" "But. Wait! for an extra amount for shipping and handling we will really screw your Windows installation up!"

Of course they make you wait until they find the registry errors to tell you that you have to pay $39.00. I just did a google search on REGSERVO and the only ones that give RegServo good reviews are, and hear is the drum roll, Regservo itself. Stay away from any of these programs that say they will fix your registry then want money to fix the problems they found.

Also there is no need to run any registry cleaner. More often than not it will not help your problem or speed up your computer, and can indeed break your registry to the extent of having to reinstall windows.

If this is the system in yur Computer specs, have you been having any problems with needing to adjust the date and time lately?

Hi all-
Apologies in advance as I am not exactly technologically sound.
I tried plugging in my digital camera today, and though it did not come up, I hunted down the Removable Disk (E) drive, which I figured would open it. It told me that I had to choose a program to open it with, so I chose some kind of picture viewer. Then all the icons on my desktop turned into said picture viewer, and I cannot open anything but that program from the desktop. Also, when I go into Programs and try to open them, they don't work there either. Help!
I am using Windows 7. I have tried System Restore but it told me that it could not complete it and gave me some kind of error message with 0x80070005. It recommended that I turn off my protection or whatever to complete it, but I have Norton 360 and no idea how to turn it off!
Any help is greatly appreciated- we just bought this computer in November and now my husband is ticked off!

Welcome Tuckersmom !
When I connect my camera to either of our computers, the camera itself indicates on the viewer how to handle the pictures....
To replace the icons on the desk top, right click any empty place and select refresh, I think this should restore them for you.
My daughter uses Norton 360 and we have found that it disables the system restore. She does regular backups with Norton 360. If you have done that, you should be able to restore from one of those backups.

When I start the pc it gives the message above, also it does not let me save the cmos settings for cpu i.e. it just hangs but it does let me change the settings for date time etc so I think it rules out a bad cmos battery.

I copy e-mail into a Word document, write an answer and copy it back into the mail. The mail-and-answer document is saved locally (a strategy that keeps my mailbox always empty). But when I open the document later on, just to look at it, when closing it asks if I want to save the changes, even though I made no change. If I write first into a new Word document, this doesn’t happen, so maybe some flag is set when I first copy the mail into Word. Any idea where this is located and how to unset it? (using win7 x64)

I used a program called "Types" to change a few file icons in windows. I did the same thing on a laptop but used a different program so I didn't get this problem. After I changed the default icon for .exe every exe program changed to the default icon I had selected. Not just the programs I already had on the computer but it uses the default icon for new programs downloaded and even ones viewed on disc. And it changed all shortcuts to the default icon.

I've been able to restore most of the shortcuts through the properties menu. Interesting thing is I have to do it twice on every icon since the first attempt seems to do nothing (and refreshing the desktop doesn't work).

I've downloaded additional icon programs that have a restore setting but that hasn't worked. I've tried a registry fix but that doesn't work. Neither has using the windows restore point. I've gone into the registry itself and changed around the default icon for the exe. Sure it'll change the icon but no exe programs with their own icons will return to their original state. My last attempt has been to delete the icon cache and that has also failed.

So now that google has let me down I'm hoping someone here can help me. A big thank you in advance cause this is really annoying.

Now type each line and press enter after each line.
Note the spaces.

A:Changed EXE Icon Now All EXE's are changed to default Icon

It's much safer to change application shortcut icons on a "one at a time" basis, using the built-in Properties > Change Icon feature which most shortcuts have. Using software to do it is unecessary and also (as you've discovered) risky.

Doesn't the software have a way to restore defaults?
If it doesn't, you'll have to restore each one manually by right-clicking one, choosing "Properties", then clicking "Change icon". Click "Browse", navigate to that shorcut's parent application in C:\Program Files, find the main executable and select that.

Hi,

My computer is working fine - but I recently purchased a new Samsung ML2570 laser printer that just died when the starter cartridge ran out of toner (or actually when the printer counter hit its predetermined set no. - probably 1000). At least I think that's what happened. The starter cartridges come without fuses. Replacement cartridges or toner refill kits come with fuses that are supposed to reset the counters, so when I refilled the starter cartridge and inserted the fuse that came with the kit, the printer still didn't work. I tried again with two more fuses, with no luck. I don't have a printer jam and all the doors are well-latched before I turn it on. Does anyone have any idea what I should do next to get my printer working again? My email is [email protected]

My Mom has an HP laptop. She recently purchased a new HP printer and I have been trying for the last 4 days to get it to install/connect. I've been in touch with HP but the links they provide aren't resolving the issues.

First, using the CD that came with the printer: hangs up at around 85-90%. It doesn't not show up as installed. I copied the CD to the desktop, modified Setup.exe in CFFExplorer and Run as Administrator and it appears to completely install; however, when I go to Device Manager, it says no driver is found. I sometimes have the option to update and sometimes that seems to work but I can't access it through Add a Printer (which has the green bar run across the top, then pulsate and freeze).

Trying to install using the driver I download from HP results in no installing screen appearing but it does hang up in the background and the only way to stop it is to Restart. The same thing happens if I try to use HPs Wizard.

I've installed several HP printers through the years and not had this much trouble. That doesn't even include the dozens of times I've had to reinstall my own HP printer because of its contrariness!

Additionally, attempts to uninstall the old printer results in it hanging up/freezing soon in to the process, whether I try to uninstall from the Start menu, file or Uninstall program. A:Unable to install printer drivers, uninstall old printer, update Windo

Hi columbia93, welcome to 7F!

Printers are touchy animals, when installing any printer you have to follow the install procedures exactly as described by the manufacturer.

This may be the root cause:

Quote:
FYI - I've not checked her machine in a while

Not that you haven't been able to check it, but there may be an accumulation of problems on your Mom's machine that also are stopping the update process.

I am trying to find one of 7F's tutorials on improving performance of a computer, but it boils down to cleaning out all detritus that a machine can accumulate of a period of time.
I did find this but there is another one: Hard Disk Space - Free Up and Recover The first three options would help

Run Antimalware/virus scans, run a Check Disk then a sfc /scannow then try to uninstall that old printer driver, and if that works shut down the machine, and try to install the printer without the HP disk, when it looks, but asks if you have the disk say no and allow the OS to install what it has.
It is my understanding that HP Printer drivers already come with Windows 7.

But do the cleanup first and see if that helps.

I'm having difficulty getting the printer which is attached to a Win XP Pro system to be available for use by a Win ME system on the same network.

The printer is a HP Deskjet 697C. It is installed and working on the Win XP Pro system.
Both systems can see each other on the network and transfer files back and forth with no difficulty.
The printer on the XP system is marked for Sharing and File and Print Sharing is enabled.
The XP Firewall is turned off, as we use Zone Alarm Security Suite.

When I use Add Printer on the WinME machine, and try to browse for a network printer, I can expand the network to see the computer name of the XP machine, but the shared printer doesn't show up as a choice.

Hi Guys,

I'm getting quite frustrated with this issue and wondering if anyone has seen it, and able to resolve the issue. The issue is I have a network printer selected as the default in Windows 10. I have the option "Let Windows manage my default printer" turned off. At one point randomly, the default printer goes back to the Adobe PDF as the default.

Steps taken:

* I have checked the registry settings to ensure that the options "let Windows manage my default printer" is switched off. I can confirm this.
* Switched the default printer back to the network printer and performed a reboot. The network printer remains as the default. At some point of the day it goes back to Adobe PDF.
* Had a Microsoft support dude to look at the issue, but he has no idea either.

A few of my pilot users has also experience the same issue. Any ideas anyone?

How mine is set up is
In settings
Go to Printer icon
Make sure your named printer is in default.
Turn on let Window manage your default printer.

Printer - Turn On or Off Let Windows 10 Manage Default Printer

That way if your printer you named was the last one used
The next time you go to print
Your printer should appear

Hi to all.

I am having an annoing problem with shared printers.

The user that share a printer lose the default printer in any case when another user print on this shared and it turn immediatly default printer only for the user that share the printer.

The printer shared is a label printer without network port and all was working very well before this , in my opinion, unusefull improve.

All user have the " not manage default option" , win 10 pro but seems that "default option" do not effect at all with shared printers.

It is clear that is a very bad working for the sharing printer user that have to check every time what the actual default printer.

any suggestion or is it a win 10 bug ?

ciao

I'm an intern at a non-profit for the summer and was given my own little office. The small problem I have is with trying to print webpages, specifically the format that a page would be when you try to print off google maps...
When printing in other programs such as office I can select which printer. (There are 5 network printers, 2 that print double sided, 2 that are desktop units in other people's cubes, and 1 that is the fax machine). However when printing off a webpage I am only given two options, "MS Office Document Image Writer" and "Microsoft XPS Document Writer".
How can I make any of the other printers availible/show up when I'm trying to print a webpage? The tech guy is covering about 4 other jobs and told me I'm free to fiddle/add/edit system stuff on my machine. I tend to be pretty good about most things but am not experienced with networking.
Any help would be appreciated, let me know if any clarification is necessary.
I'm running Windows XP all current updates have been installed.
Thanks!

I just upgraded my XP home edition to Vista home premium with an upgrade disk provided by Dell. Before the upgrade I uninstalled my HP 2575 printer and software because it was listed as a compatibility issue. After upgrade I reinstalled new software from HP for my printer from the HP website. I plugged in the USB cable from my printer. Vista recognized the new device but would not put it in the printer folder in the control panel. Vista did find driver software online but could not install it. The HP solution center tells me no HP devices have been detected. When I try to print I get a message that I don’t have a printer hooked up. That’s the back ground here is what I have done.

Hello, I am happy to supply whatever tech info to resolve this issue which has defeated me for 6 months. I cannot connect my HP G60 laptop Vista to HP printer or Kodak. Having looked at old threads I am not the only person to run up against this very hard problem. I would prefer not to bin my Laptop and buy an apple mac for compatability issues with 3rd party software. My solution at present is using a stick and transferring to XP sony lap top which is a nightmare as both have different versions of microsoft office. I am new to this forum and apologise in advance if my thread post does not meet the standards required of this collective. many best wishes to all.

My new windows 7 computer is a dell package from staples. It's an Inspiron 660, 3 ghz, 4 megs ram, 64 bit, intel pentium processor. It's running Windows 7 Home edition. It's on a 'workgroup' network with two xp machines, one of which shares data files that reside on the win7 machine.

My usb receipt printer is an Epson tm-u220D. This printer is not plug and play, so the driver had to be downloaded and force fed. No problem there really; after a few tries we got the printer to print a test page and the accounting software (Bottom Line Accounting) seems to recognize it fine.

This setup is used as the cash register in a retail store, and prints receipts for customers on paper rolls.

Here is the minor glitchy problem - when we print a receipt it prints fine, but then we can see the red error light on the printer start flashing, and the next receipt won't print until we switch the printer off and back on. Also we see a local downlevel document in the queue that goes away in about a half minute whether we turn the printer off or not, and it instantly disappears if we do turn it off.

It's gonna be a pain to switch the printer off and back on between every two customers.

Surely there is an easy fix for this problem - any printer experts out there? Thanks in advance!

I am running windows xp pro, I had installed sp2 and found usb problems. In trying to fix the problem I accidentally deleted the port the printer was using, the "virtual usb port". I have recently removed the sp2 from my computer which helped in other areas but my printer is not being recognized by anything since deleting that port. Does anyone know how I can get that port back. All other usb devices work fine, scanner mouse keyboard ect..With power on to the printer it shows "printer not responding" or "printer offline". The printer is a cannon s9000. If it helps I am running a Abit kt-7a raid mobo, 1.4ghz amd athlon, win xp pro build 2600. I thought of installing xp on top of the current install but wasn't sure if i'd make things worse..Any help greatly appreciated.

I have an old Dell C840 that I've been using for a long time with Windows 7 Ultimate. Apart from the odd driver problem, it has been working fine for a long time.
About a month ago my niece took it in her head to tidy my desk while I was out. I had left the machine running a backup on the mains with a battery inserted. She managed to unplug it and somehow remove the battery, causing it to crash and corrupt both the registry files and my backup disk.
I've managed to get it working again from the existing registry files except for one big feature.
I've tried SFC /scannow which only failed to recover one file - which isn't used anyway.
Now everything seems to work OK except that some installs just disappear into a black hole and (I suspect the cause of the lack of install) NO property sheets work ~(just flicker the AV and disappear into the black hole)
When I say none of them, I mean not one from anywhere - right click, control panel or anywhere. It is only the property sheets that don't work , everything else seems to be OK.
Google does not help in this instance as none match this case.
I've tried removing all AV, Firewall and Antimalware. I've tried checking the registry and removing all old redundant stuff. I've tried Safe mode. I have no restore point available as I use ERUNT to do a daily backup and all those got corrupted. The last full backup I have is on an OLD disk from over a year ago.

I am fully expecting to have to do a fresh... Read more

I had some problems recently and was advised to create a new profile... which I did, and the new profile seems to have solved the problems I was having... however, now my recycle bin has a plain document icon, there is no "empty recycle bin" option in the right click menu and when I try to choose properties I get a message saying "the properties for this item are not available"... the one thing I've tried is sfc scan, but it did not solve the problem. Any thoughts? I'm on Home Premium.

Windows 2000 computer set unused over a year. unable to connect to internet at this time. in troubleshooting i found that i was unable to access TCP/IP properties. The button will not activate. i tried to install TCP/IP protocol. The message: "An error occurred during the installation of the device. The inf or the device information set or element does not match the specified install class."

I downloaded a virus scan onto a CD and run this. No infections found. i downloaded windows 2000 updates onto a CD and run those. i contacted the internet tech support- unable to find a problem. I deleted the subkey pertaining to the network interface card (i think it was the right one) and search for updated driver and installed it.

What else can i do?

EDIT: Somehow the tab that was missing has started to appear again, don't know how because I haven't done anything but it's back anyway!

I recently re-installed windows 7 ultimate, the same I had the last time on my computer. But I noticed one thing. Before I re-installed windows, all the files, programs, etc. in their "Properties" looked like this:
Tabs in one row only, and also a tab either named "customize" or "icons".

But now all the file and program properties look like this:

It's in swedish, to translate, the tabs within the red lines are

"Safety"
"Information"
"Previous versions"
"General"
"Compability"
"Digital Signatures".

My issue is, before I re-installed windows, the tabs in properties for both files and programs, (anything almost) wasn't lined in two rows like in the picture above, they were only lined in one, just like with folder properties. And I had the ability to change a file or program's icon in "properties". I don't know how get that back, I've tried to google it but I can't find anything on how to fix this. All I can find is people showing how to get "Customize" tab to work in folder properties, but I've always had the "Customize" or "icons" tab in all my program files properties too, and I want it back. Please help!

/Becca

A:Need help with properties!

Don't know about the single tab row thing. Maybe you for some reason had fewer tabs before so they fit on only one row? These in the picture don't seem to fit in only one.
