Windows Explorer has stopped working when playing movie DVD

Q: Windows Explorer has stopped working when playing movie DVD

Hi,

I am trying to play a DVD movie that I burned about a year ago. It has always worked previouly, but now when I try to open it from Autoplay or from Computer, I get a message telling me that Windows Explorer has stopped working. Can you help me with this one?

As always, thank you and

A: Windows Explorer has stopped working when playing movie DVD

Good Evening Folks:

I am having a problem with Windows Explorer and WMP11. I have the original King Kong movie that I downloaded and burned over a year ago. Every so often I drag it out just for the enjoyment of watching it again. This time, however, when I attempt to play it I get a message telling me that WMP11 has stopped working. If I try to open the files on the disk the message tells me that Windows Explorer has stopped working and will have to restart.
When I first started to dig into this problem I was because I was getting a message telling me that the DEP had stopped working. That has been cured by disabling DEP, but now it is Windows Explorer that stops working. There are also a few other glitches that have appeared such as a language bar that appears on the screen whenever the UAC window opens and an internet connection that will not run in protected mode even though that function is enabled. I have scoured the net and have seen a number of people who associate this problem with the installation of Vista SP2? If this is the case I will dump SP2 even if it means reinstalling the O/S.
I'm running a 32 bit Vista Home Premium O/S.
Any comments will be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Powell Lucas

Hey, Fellas, I'm back.
Lately when I've tried looking at different folders and files on my hard drives I keep getting "Windows Explorer has stopped working and will restart." It's driving me nuts, I can barely do anything.
Also, same thing with Internet Explorer...I'm getting real sick of Vista's shoddiness..

Windows Movie Maker, which came with MS Vista, simply stopped working one day. I tried to open it and I get a pop up that says "Unspecified Error." I know that is not much to go on. I don't think I did anything to prompt this such as do an update or install new hardware.

In an attempt to fix the problem, I did an MS update. It didn't help.

My computer is an HP Pavilion Slimline. My processor is an AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ (2 CPUs), ~2.5GHz. I have 2G of RAM.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey,
I was wondering if anyone could help me?  I have been having a lot of issues with my computer and using the internet. I keep getting messages such as ‘windows explorer has stopped working ‘and ‘Host process for windows services stopped working’. I haven’t been able to stream videos (with the exception of youtube),  download certain programs and browsing sites is slow.  I remember my computer being fine until a window update but I don’t know if that’s a coincidence or not.  I have tired uninstalling windows explorer and system restore to no avail.
I would really appreciate any help or advice.
Here is a report for one of the error messages I received.

This post is to hopefully throw some more light onto a problem that I've only just found a workaround for.
The workaround is not a fix by any means but it allows the software in question to work again.

Problem :
Sony Vegas 10.0c ?Stopped Working? and no amount of uninstall/reinstall and/or deleting all traces in the registry would fix the problem.
The problem is apparent with all versions of Sony Vegas prior to 10.0c, Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD, and associated packages (DVD Architect Studio 5.0 and Sound Forge Audio Studio 10.0 etc)

Diagnosis and workaround:
Turns out that there is some sort of conflict when Microsoft Office 2007 is installed too.
?WowExec.dll? in the Office install folder is the offending article and as soon as the dll is renamed (wowexec_bak.dll) the ?Stopped working? issue vanishes. I don?t know if either Microsoft and/or Sony have made a fix for this problem but renaming the WowExec.dll file is a temporary workaround. A few error messages may appear when running Vegas for the first time when WowExec.dll is disabled but it allows Vegas to run again.
This issue was on Windows XPSP3.
Anyone else encounter this problem? If so, is anyone aware of a permanent fix?

J

Hi,

I installed ad-aware and spybot s&d on my mom's computer to clean it off. When I ran ad-aware, it found a ton of crap (one of which was windupdate), but when I tried to delete them, ad-aware froze up. After that Explorer stopped working (I can't view folders, internet, etc.). I wound up deleting the files in safe mode, but the Explorer problem remains. Here is the HijackThis log:

Thanks in advance

HI Guys, Thanks for being here with your solutions for mere mortals like myself.
Yep, I'm getting the "Windows Explorer has stopped working", then it makes you reboot.
It does this continuously and Vista is running slower than my 95 year old granny.
I read your idea of running the "scannow", and this is what I got:

Windows resource protection did not find any integrity problems.

So now I'm completely stumped.
I've run all the diagnostics and defragged also...
Any more ideas??
Kindest Regards, Jo

Go to Start/Search and type Eventvwr.msc and press enter. On the Left open up Application and System. Look for any Red X's double click them and post what it says here. You can try this: Error message when you log on to Windows Vista: "Windows Explorer has stopped working" but you may have malware on your computer. Check online for a solution and restart the program or Restart the program are the only options available. However, I can continue, just have the screen splash up several times while working and have to close the error box. This error has only been in the past couple of days and I have not installed any new programs or extensions that I can remember. When it first happened I supposed it might be RocketDock, however that did not change when I discontinued and rebooted.

This fault does not involve a BSOD nor stop the process you are involved in (has happened with both firebox 3.6, IE8, as well as with Painter 11, Microsoft Spider game). In all instances I have not been using Windows Explorer. I did a search for the dll involved with no success for one since Windows 7 came out.

Since this problem has spanned two versions of windows including a fresh install of Windows 7, I would suspect it may be a hardware problem. If your Gateway is still under support, you could ring them and have them walk you through some hardware diagnostics. If it's not under support, I would see if there are any built-in diagnostics within your system setup. Memtset86+ is a great memory testing tool.

I just bought a new notebook with Vista. This is the first time I've come in contact with

this operating system. My problem is this, alot of the time when I go to open a file, or

unzip a compressed file no matter what unzipper I use (winrar, winzip, etc) I get this error

that shuts down explorer which in turn closes all the files I have open. It happens ALOT!!

The error reads as follows: " Windows explorer has stopped working. Windows can check

online for a solution and try to restart the program." Then gives these two options.

" Check online for a solution and restart the program." or " Restart the program." I'm to

the point of tossing this thing. If anyone else has this problem with a fix I'd be ever

so grateful!! Thank-You. Drafter

Hi folks.

I need some form of help, or advice. I surf extensively daily on the net on my laptop, a HP Enby running Win 7, 64bit. For a while I am using mainly IE9, after trying out the IE10 beta for a short stint. Of late IE 9 is getting slow, and since the IE10 was officially launched no more in beta I switched over. But still the surfing speed did not improved, in a way I moved back to IE9, then to IE10 again to and fro as I was quite frustrated with the slow speeds I experienced.

In addition, recent days, the dialog box, "Win Explorer has stopped working, would you like to close the program or, find a solution?" has been appearing a few times, when it does not all along.

Secondly I am using the free version of Win Patrol, and now this one also began to be problematic, stopped working too quite often.

Can someone assist to check if there are problems in my system?

Thank you.
Terence.

Upon logging into Vista, i get the following message :

"Windows explorer has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available".

I have a windows vista and about a week ago, the error message, "windows explorer has stopped working" popped up right after I logged into my laptop. It said something about checking for a solution. I got impatient and pressed cancel, and then it said "windows is restarting". I forgot why, but I closed that out and that was it. I'm not sure if I should restart it, since I closed the window that restarts it, but I want to know if CLOSING that window will cause prob;ems in the future, even though my computer is working okay (except for it running a tad slower).

A:Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working

Can be several different causes.

1. Malware or infection of some sort

2. Bad hardware like a CD/DVD drive, or other hardware that shows up in windows explorer.

Sounds like a possible Malware infection

MS Windows Vista Home Basic SP1
Intel Core2 Duo CPU T6400 @ 2.00GHz, 2.0GB RAM

Okay, so you guys must have heard of this one by now; I've been researching the hell out of it and it seems pretty prevalent amongst new Vista users. Whenever I open Windows Explorer for anything it comes up with "Windows Explorer has stopped working" which is then followed by "Windows Explorer is restarting". Then my Taskbar disappears momentarily and reappears without Windows Explorer restarting--as if nothing had happened. This happens quite sporadically which is almost ten times more annoying than it happening consistently; at least then I can predict it. It also happens when I attempt to open the Control Panel. Except whenn CP crashes, it hangs for a long time before I have to kill it with the Task Manager.

Now, what I've tried:
1) System Restore - It restores fine. WinEx even works for while. But alas, it fails after about a session.
2) ShellExView - Tried it. Disabled every non-MS shell. Didn't work.
3) Virus scan - No virii. Minimal spyware. Cleaned my registry--without success.

I'm pissed. I hate Vista. This is a brand new laptop--it's ludicrous for it be acting like this. If this problem can't be fixed soon, I might just convert to Ubuntu.

My computer has started having a recent issue. A couple of days ago when I restarted my computer, when I got to the "Welcome" screen, it then said a second later "Preparing your desktop". After about 4 or 5 minutes of that, when it got to the desktop, the background is black, about half of my icons are gone, and a message pops up saying that Windows Explorer has stopped working. I think this is the result of a virus I got when not being careful about downloading a torrent. I can get into Safe Mode, but I think the virus is causing the screen to freeze every 8 seconds. I've already done numerous virus scans, one turned up nothing, the other showed 255 threats. I removed them and restarted, but it did the same thing. Help please?

Problem - as soon as I boot up my computer I get this message. I have maybe 1 second to click on my Start menu before it pops up.

If I click to restart the program the message comes back instantly.

I managed to run my antivirus.  Nothing detected.

I've installed a separate copy of Vista on another partition, and can boot that up. That works fine. It's not a hardware problem.

Any suggestions?

A:Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days, please post a new HijackThis log. Thank you for your patience. If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped. Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. The reasons for this request are: Posting the log as an attachment may delay getting a response as it takes time to download the file. Please copy and paste the log in your thread for quick reading and review. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I don't think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so. Thanks.

There could be some problem with your modem and internet connection. I don't know if this will help, but I tried it and it worked. Turn off your modem (if you have one) for a minute and turn it back on. Wait for another minute and try opening you internet. That should work, but if it doesn't, contact your internet service provider (e.g. telecom) and ask them what the problem could be.

I am running Vista Home Premium. BitDefender Internet Security 2009.

I installed a small program called SUMo tonight. Other than that, I updated my WinPatrol, RoboForm, and I updated Java 6 update 11 to update 13.

I keep getting a pop up that Windows Explorer has stopped working, then looking for a solution, then it says it's restarting but then when I try to open my control panel the same thing happens all over again.

I restarted and so far it hasn't happened since my last restart, but I have restarted several times tonight due to this problem.

I have scheduled a check disk, but does anyone know what could be causing this?

A:Windows Explorer has stopped working

Explorer is crashing, probably because of an add-on which has a problem. If you run WERCON, then check the "problem history" link on the left hand side, there might be entries in that list corresponding to your Explorer crashes.

If you paste those "appcrash" numbers here, someone might be able to help you work out why it's crashing.

My computer keepss telling me that Windows Explorer has stopped working then restarts. I believe that this started happening after I updated The Weather Channel desktop app which happened to install some program called ARO. This ARO program automatically started running and I immediately shut it off since I didn't know what it was. I have since uninstalled The Weather Channel program but would love it if someone can help me with this problem.

Hi All

Dell Inspiron 15 running Windows 7

When I start the computer it all seems normal until the desktop appears and the icons load. Before I can do anything I get a pop up saying Windows Explorer has stopped working. I have the option to restart windows or check on line for a solution. Both options give the same results. The icons disapperar and then reappear but I get the same pop up before I can do anything.

I recently had a huge malware problem that I was working through with CatByte in this thread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic481194.html . I thought the problem was fix but now I can't do anything with the computer.

Hey Kim,The malware issue could have caused some damage to Windows. Try running the system file checker from safe mode and that may fix the problem. For information on running the system file checker you can click the link below.System File CheckerYou may also want to wipe the system clean and format the drive then reinstall Windows since your system was infected with the malware. Let me know if you need any other information. mfc80u.dll is a part of MS Visual Studio and normally it shouldn't have anything to do with Windows Explorer functions. The file is used by various Microsoft applications, such as Visual C++, Microsoft C/C++, Visual C++.Net etc.If Visual Studio is installed, the file should reside in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\Tools\Bin folder.See, if you have any Visual Studio listed in Program Files.

Every time I right click a blank area of my desktop to make a new folder, a window pops up that says:

Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working

under that it gives 2 options:

"Check online for a solution and restart the program"
&
"Restart the program"

Selecting either option does nothing---I still get the error message when I right click .

P.S. This is in Windows 7 Home Premium

There should be information on why in event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Go to windows logs>applications tab. You need to look for critical errors (they have red in the left hand column) that say things like app hang, app crash.

When you find them (there is going to be a lot of data) use the built in snipping tool to make a screen shot. Upload it to us using the attachment icon (shaped like a paper clip) on the reply form.

My operating system is Windows Vista

The pop-up message "Windows Explorer has stopped working" is closely followed by "Windows is checking for a solution to the problem..." which in turn is closely followed by "Windows Explorer is restarting..." At this point the desktop momentarily goes black and then returns.

Whilst the pop-ups are present I am unable to operate the PC

I believe that this was triggered by a 'Trojan' bug?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a virus... Weird behavior even for Vista... I suggest running your computer in safe mode and doing a virus / spyware scan... See what it comes up with. And also see if the same thing happens in safe mode.

Hey guys, I'll go straight to my problem, 'cause I'm really pissed off right now, because it's really annoying.

I'm using Windows 7 Build 7600 Ultimate x64 RTM

Everything was fine untill 2 days ago.I was browsing some random sites with mozilla firefox when I clicked on the taskbar. The mouse turned into that circle-loading thingy and then the Windows explorer has stopped working window popped up.I chose restart and it restarted the Windows Explorer program and everything was fine...for about five minutes.I searched in google for a fix or something and here's what I did.

I stopped some things from starting with windows from msconfig, but that didn't help.I saw what programs I had recently installed and uninstalled them, but that didn't help either.I used system restore to go a few days back...still nothing.I updated the Windows with all Important Updates, uninstalled Firefox and a few other things, but still no use...
I scanned my computer with Spybot: Search & Destroy, it found more than 80 tracking cookies and succesfully deleted them.
Then I scanned with MBAM and It came up with 2 results, one was desktop hijacker and the other one, I don't remember...I "fixed" them and now MBAM comes up with nothing and I don't know where the old logs are saved.
I also scanned with NOD32 and it didn't find a thing.

I noticed that when windows is loading it kinda spends more time on that window that comes up after you c... Read more

A:Windows Explorer has stopped working.

Hello MALicious and welcome to Seven Forums.

Try refreshing Windows Explorer. To do this, open Task Manager and highlight explorer.exe (do not confuse it with iexplore.exe.) Then click on the End Process button. Everything on your desktop will disappear. This is normal. Still in Task Manager, Click on File > New Task (Run...) > type in explorer.exe > OK. Within a few seconds all of your desktop icons will reappear and Windows Explorer will be refreshed.

If this problem continues you might want to check for damaged or corrupt system files. Run a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot the computer after each scan.

Upon logging into Vista, i get the following message :

"Windows explorer has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available".

Nothing happens after clicking ok. I get a black screen and just the mouse cursor. I can start task manager but that is all. I also get the message from time to time upon login:

"Host Process for windows services stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available".

There is no desktop, start up bar or icons and this is the same when i go into safemode. I have tried system restore but this doesn't work at all.

Also when i attempt to a start up repair i get the following :

A:Windows explorer has stopped working

Consider malware as a likely cause.

Possible ways to fix the problem.
Remove your laptop's hard disk drive.
Connect it to a different computer.
Copy your important files to CDs or DVD. Not a flash drive because, if your computer is infected, 1 or more of YOUR important files may be infected [ even a song or an image ].

THEN, run anti malware scans, targeting the HDD of your laptop. ONLY some programs are capable of scanning in such a manner. I know of no way to check your registry for malware using this method. I know of no way to check for rootkits using this method.

OR
Reformat, re-install.
This will replace [ wipe out & create a new ] registry.

Scan for malware; check for rootkits.

I'd first run system file checker.
Start - Search - Type.
cmd
Right click cmd.exe - run as administrator.
Type
sfc /scannow

Press Enter.
Let it run to completion but do not close the command prompt window.

To save the log file copy and paste the following in command prompt and press enter.

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

Copy and paste the Sfcdetails.txt file from your desktop in your next post.

Hi I'm kinda new here, i hope this is the right place to post my thread,

Whenever I would open folders such as "My Music" or "Documents", the browser would sometimes lag and freeze, then a message came up saying "Windows Explorer has stopped working" and it would prompt me to end Windows Explorer, causing my desktop to go blank and come back a second later.

task manager couldn't seems like its not working too, when i end task programs, nothing happens.

also, when i want to shut down my laptop it will always take a very long time, i even have to "force shut down" my laptop.

what should I do? can anyone help?

Hello!

Okay, firstly I'd just like to thank anyone who answers in advance regardless of whether or not I get my laptop functioning normally again, because you took the time to answer, and I'm very grateful.

Okay, so here is the deal. I'm using my laptop when one-day, this error comes up saying 'Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working' and then about every 5 seconds after that message comes up it's say 'Windows Explorer is restarting'. It goes on like this on a continues loop. I can still use my laptop, at least I can use the google chrome, because my entire laptop doesn't actually shut-down. It's more like it refreshes or something.

I have ran disk-check. I have also checked for viruses etc. and I don't have any. I have also done command thing sfc /scannow, here it said that it fixed some files, but not all of them.

I've also tried to do a 'memory diagnostics' but nothing comes up, when I write it in my search bar.

The weird thing is, sometimes I turn my laptop on and of, and when my laptop turns on it's fine. In this case another error box comes-up and says something like 'host process shut-down' but everything seems to work fine? But later when I restart it for some reason it goes back to the same problem.

Yes, so this is me.

Again thank you in advance.

Also this is my sysinfo

So, all of a sudden, I get the message "Windows Explorer has stopped working" followed by the old explorer shell restart process.

This problem only happens when I try to right click on an executable to access the menu - although not all executables are affected

I have no restore points before today's events

I've run Spybot, AVG, Defender, etc to check for nasties, but nothing helps.

I've tried sfc /scannow at command prompt - no help

I've tried UAC off and on - no help

I've uninstalled everyhting installed on today's date.

Looking at the event viewer I get this message:

"Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x47918e5d, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791a7a6, exception code 0xc0000374, fault offset 0x000b015d, process id 0xbd4, application start time 0x01c8e7962c1ebc18."

So, is the problem is with ntdll.dll?

How can I get rid of this problem and return to normal?

Please help me as soon as you can

I keep getting the windows explorer has stopped working box. Then it goes to windows explorer is restarting. it does this nonstop an infinite number of times. I cant access anything in start menu due to it restarting. I have run Sfc /scannow from cmd as admin and it found nothing. I don't know if this is malware related or hardware failing. This happens when not accessing internet explorer or any browser. It starts after a reboot and wont stop. Any help is appreciated.

A:Windows Explorer has stopped working.....

It is often a problem with an a program that has added an entry to the context menu. It is a hard thing to go through all of them and try to find out which is the cause.

You could also be infected. Any other symptoms?

Directions are here (same method as the one they use):

Context Menu Repair

But, are there any particular things that bring it on, or any specific folders that cause it?

Hi, lately my computer has been acting up a lot. Now all of the sudden every time I go into "Computer" Windows Explorer crashes and resets. I'm not sure of the problem to be honest, I have tried a System Restore, next thing I will try I guess is a clean boot, is there anything else I should do that could check what the problem is or fix it?

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

A:Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working.

Sounds like one of two things, windows is having difficulty checking one of the drives. If you push ctrl + r it'll bring up the run box if you put c:\windows in there and click OK does it load the folder? If not then it could be spyware or a virus, i'd advise getting malwarebytes and spybot and running full scans in safe mode.

If viewing the folder worked then try the same thing opening all the different drives until it crashses.

When I turn my Vista laptop off in the morning of 10th July, it ran a windows update as it has on many occasions before.

I turned the PC back on in the evening to be presented with "Windows Explorer has stopped working" and a black screen.

I have tried restoring to a previous restore point, turning of UAC, all to no avail. It will run programs from Task Manager as long as I know how to get to them.

Any ideas gratefully recieved

Your experiencing this same Windows Explorer issue with several totally different work stations? I just wanted to be sure I read your post correctly.

How much RAM do you have dedicated to programs or how much RAM do you have in each work station?

There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Go to the windows log>application tab.

You want to look for critical errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

You do not need to do anything, unless this happens constantly. Are you having this problem all the time?

If you would like to check to make sure that windows is not corrupted, and to see if anything is wrong with your windows installation, see this tutorial using option 2 here:

"Windows Explorer has stopped working" followed by a new small window "Windows Explorer is restarting" and then within ten seconds it repeats the small windows over and over. When the small windows are open, cannot access anything else on the computer. Can access other programs on the computer during the ten seconds the small windows are not open. Have tried system restore and problem persists.
Have also somehow acquired Virusprotectpro (granddaughter has access to laptop!) which I understand I need to get rid of (Virusprotectpro, not grandaughter!)

Hi:

(plucked from microsoft answers)

Try using System File Checker to scan your OS for missing/corrupt files, complete these steps:
Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
In the results area, right-click cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator. You will be prompted to type the password for an administrator account. Click Continue if you are the administrator or type the administrator password. Then, click Continue.
At the command prompt, type Sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.

The scan may take some time, so be patient. Windows will repair any corrupted or missing files that it finds. If information from the installation CD is needed to repair the problem, you may be prompted to insert your Windows Vista CD.

Good Luck

Hi there.I hope someone can help me. I'm using Vista Home Basic on a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop. My problem is that Windows Explorer keeps crashing and giving me the messages "Windows Explorer has stopped working", and then "Windows Explorer is restarting", and then making the whole desktop disappear and restart. I was trying to transfer the files over to my external hard drive to free up some space when it started happening. I can still open other things in Explorer such as Control Panel, My Documents, etc.I have tried several fixes, none of which have worked, including: System Restore - I restored to a point before I noticed it happening, but it didn't work. I don't have an earlier restore point. Tried turning off UAC as someone in another forum said it worked for them - it didn't work for me. Have checked in Programs & Features for any programs that shouldn't be there. There was nothing suspicious, but I uninstalled everything that had been installed recently anyway, and the problem kept happening. Have scanned with AVG, Spybot and Trojan Remover. Only Spybot found anything, but the removal of these items did not make a difference. Currently scanning with Housecall, but it's taking ages. how are you trying to transfer the files? drag and drop, cut and paste, right click and select "send too"? give all 3 ways a try and see if it gives you the same problem.

also do you have more than one device your trying to transfer too? try and see if it errors when transfering to any device or just a certain one.
