PC keeps running v slowly twice a day

Q: PC keeps running v slowly twice a day

Hi, my Pc every day starts running really slowly like it is virus checking (although I have set the check and backup to 2am), I can hear the processor clicking away as though it is being stretched and quite often I get a notification to say the PC is low on memory and to close programs, it seems to happen for about an hour twice a day. How do I find out what it causing it to run slow, I am assuming its a background task scheduled each day?
Thanks

Please help, my computer isn't very useful right now. Here's the deal:

1. My computer keeps on freezing up on me, and I don't even have many programs running. When my computer finally starts up, I log onto windows, and it takes seriously two or three minutes for windows to load; two weeks ago it took 20-30 seconds for windows to load. When windows finally loads, and I click on a program (ie. Internet Explorer or Opera Web Browser), it takes another five to seven minutes for one the programs to appear on the screen, then another minute or two for the program to load. When I close a program, it does one of two things; my computer will freeze, and I'll have to restart it; or, it will take a couple of minutes to close the program. And I'm just working with the basics; Internet explorer, opera, open office, and windows media. I'm trying to add music to my newly added iTunes library, but that's almost impossible.

2. My computer won't shut down. This computer is only seven months old, it's too young for such problems. When I go to shut my computer down, I select the shut down icon from the start menu, and expect my computer to shut down. Rather than shutting down, windows pop up telling me that the programs that I had been running are not responding, and I have the option to wait or end the program. I end the program, and the window comes up again, it's almost like my computer isn't properly responding to its commands. Again ... Read more

Hi. My computer has been running much slower than normal. When you open a new window or even try to select a user from the first screen, it really takes its time. Even once the window is open, you can still hear the wheels turning inside the box like it is really struggling to run its basic operating system. When you type something into a web page text box, there is a lag from when I press the key to when the letter shows up.

I have Windows XP and an AMD processor (I don't know which one).

Thanks
Eric

Hey,

Recently, I received a message from the windows firewall about a wuaudit.exe and I blocked it. Now, I can barely go to websites or download anything, much less post in this forum. I have used spyware search and destroy which did not remedy the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

when i close out of steam games, my computer will run slower than usual, even if i end all processes related to steam. my computer will stay at this slowed speed untill i restart my computer.

Hi there, thanks for viewing this.

Recently, my internet explorer 7 and firefox has been running quite slowly. After googling a bit, I found out that this problem could be caused by the iexplore.exe virus.

Many iexplore.exe was running in the processes tab of the Windows task manager when my internet browsers were not in use. This may have caused the slowness.

I have a logfile of TrendMicro's Hijackthis v2.0.2:

get rid of all the bloatware that comes with the dell system(bloatware is extra programs you know you wont need). Just uninstall those and then use the revo uninstaller to completely uninstall those programs. below is the link to the revo uninstaller:

My internet connection drops all the times, and sometimes it lags alot. My roommates all seem to get a better, more consistent connection. We run a wireless 802.11b.

I was wondering if this could be a result of any malware so i ran HJT, again.

If not malware is there anything you suggest to trouble shoot the problem.

Someone borrowed the computer and brought it back and now it runs extremly slow and McAfee says it has picked up a few trojans while it was gone. I have the logs but for some reason gmer did not work. I do have a 64-bit operating system so I am not sure if that has an effect on it.

Hi guys

I wonder if anyone can help.

My PC (HP Compaq Pentium 4 3.00GHz with 1GB RAM) is running XP Pro with SP2.

It boots up pretty fast, and runs well after that. I work from home and so typically use it for up to 10 hours a day, using apps like Firefox, MS Office, Skype, etc nothing too intensive.

The problem is that after a couple of hours all the apps start running really slowly. I reboot and the machine runs great again.

I loaded the free Comodo firewall a month or so back but I'm convinced this started in the last 2 weeks. Yesterday I run a Spybot S&D and also malwarebytes anti-malware scan but this had made no difference.

I've got another 1GB of RAM on order and this will help but I think there may be another underlying problem.

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance , JD

I am hoping someone can help me out. My boyfriend got a new HP notebook with Windows 7 home 64x. It has been running fine for about a month.

On Saturday he had the laptop on and was browsing his usual websites (nothing new) when suddenly the PC slowed down to a standstill.

It runs terribly slow when opening any apps and then suddenly runs as normal, then its back to being slow (it is more often slow than not) I have run a scan to check for viruses (just a quick one as it take so long!!!) I am trying to download some security pdates but nothing is happening.

I did check the CPU usage and it is normally about 3%, sometimes peaking at 13% when I first open a program.

Does anyone have any advice? I don't want to try things blindly as the system is so slow each thing takes 5x as long as usual.

A:OS is running VERY slowly!!!

The first thing that I would do is run an antivirus scan, as you did, and then download and run malwarebytes.

This may turn up negative, but even the common sites like google can cause problems. These "people" that write virus etc are very proficient at what they do.

Hey,

I am running the original day of defeat which requires less than 1Ghz of speed and I am using a laptop with a dual core 2.2Ghz and when I run the game I get 10FPS. My mate is running the same game with a single core 1.6Ghz processor and getting 60FPS we are using the exact same graphic settings and screen size so this makes little sense. The only difference is that he uses xp and I use Vista home premium 32bit SP1

My system specs are:
dual core 2.2Ghz
2Gb RAM
358mb Intel Graphic Media Acellerator
160GB HDD

This is the ACER ASPIRE 5720 Notebook

When I run CPUZ it states I am running at 1600MHZ not close the the 2.2GHz advertised.

I also updated all the drivers as well and defrag and virus scan regularly

Just want someone to take a look see and let me know what problems I may have. It appears any browser I use starts up very slowly it may take several minutes. When it does finally open it hangs...the frames appears then it sits for quite some time before it finally loads the page. Browsing with IE is hit and miss for the most part it takes forever to open the page. When I use Safari once it loads it seems to browse pretty well only hanging once in a while. IE now has been not completely loading e.g. my favorites icon is there but just a black box with no text, my tab bar is blacked out exept for the tabs with no red close X. I got a blue screen of death appear and had a reboot last time i opened it. I got McAfee from my ISP and found a bunch of malware/spyware. Any suggestion or solutions would be helpful. Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Alan and welcome to TSF.

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

There's nothing showing in your log. The only interesting this is QuickTime appears to be installed at your root drive rather than Program Files - is that correct?

Let's try an online scan.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

A Welcome screen will appear - click 'Accept' at the bottom. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: Extended
Scan Options:Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK

Now under select a target to scan: Select My ComputerThis will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Take note of the name(s) and location(s) of any file(s) it detects but fails to clean.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Post back with the Kaspersky log.

I've tried disabling processes in Task Manager and the only one I've found that helps (doesn't cure it completely) is spoolsv.exe (found in C:/i386). It seems to keep coming back, although it could be a legitimate file. I renamed it to spoolsv.BAK in the i386 file and that has not been changed. I'm using (as you can see in the logs) MS Security Essentials and firewall. I've also run Malwarebytes, but nothing has detected anything viral.

Hi I have a Dell 710m with a 2.1ghz pentium processor (M). I ran a "see if it will work" program from dowload.com to see if a game demo would work. It requires a 1.2ghz processor, which i thought I was fine with. It said its running at 598mhz performance rated at 897mhz. Could someone tell me if I can change something in bios? I went to the setup menu and couldnt find cpu speed. Thanks! Max

Hi techguys.

I recently added verizon DSL to my computer (two weeks ago) and everything worked fine up until yesterday.
All of a sudden, my web pages are loading pretty slow (dial up speed) and it takes a lot longer than usual for me to download things. I just tried to download a 2mb file, and it took almost two minutes.
Also, when I try to watch music videos, they often freeze.

As I said, these problems are new, and I have no idea what's causing them.
I constantly clear my cache and delete my temporary files, but it isn't helping.

I haven't turned off my computer in a few days, but I did restart it yesterday; could that be the source of my problem?

I'm running on a Dell Dimension 4550
Windows xp SP1

Thank you, any help is much appreciated.

Hello Seedman,

You currently have 2 Anti Virus programs installed. While it may seem to be added protection for you, more than 1 Anti Virus can cause conflicts and confusion between the AV programs as well as system instability. Please choose and run only 1 and uninstall the other via the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

If your system still seems slow, please run an online scan:

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan Click on located at the bottom of the page.
A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Run a new scan with HijackThis and save the log.

I am wondering if someone may be able to help me. My PC has been running very slowly the last few weeks now and it is getting very irritating.

I have scanned it with AVG antivirus, Scanned with Spybot S&D, and adaware. I have also ran Ace Utilities to clean up registry etc. All to apparantly no avail.
I have since downloaded HJT and include the logfile below. Can someone please decipher and see if there is anything in there that looks a bit dodgy?

Hello,

I have been having a number of problems with my laptop in the past day, the most recent being that it is running very slowly. I will start with the problems that i had before this and how i fixed them.

Last night I was not able to boot past the windows splash screen without being greeted by a BSOD. It indicated that a driver was preventing windows from being started. I searched this driver and saw that it was related to the program Daemon Tools Lite. I booted in to safe mode and removed this program, which allowed me to get to my desktop.

I did notice however, that despite being able to get on to my desktop now, It took an unusually long time to load past the spash and login screens. Once on my desktop, everything was running very slowly. Applications took a very long time to process and open, and even something as simple as a right click has a significant delay before bringing up the menu. Upon testing programs i learned that trying to interact with Google Chrome in any way (including attempting to uninstall) would result in my computer freezing and having to be hard reset. So once again I booted into safemode and removed then reinstalled Google Chrome. It no longer freezed my computer, but it has not solved the slow problem.

So just to summarize, everything is running very slowly regardless of how many processes are currently open. This includes trying to open programs, windows files and menus/taskbar. When ... Read more

Hello,

My Laptop is running slowly. I've followed all the steps outlined in the "Is your PC running slow...?" These steps seem to have helped quite a bit, but I want to make sure I don't have any malware installed.

I've followed the steps to get the logs as detailed in the "NEW INSTRUCTIONS..." post for malware removal first posting. Please find my dds.txt copy/pasted below and attach.zip, including attach.txt and ark.txt, attached.

Unfortunately, I do not know if there is any infection, nor can I describe any issues other than slow performance.

Thanks,
Heezea

My PC has been progressivly running slower, but particularly since I changed over from Norton to McAfee software. When I run the tool procexp.exe, it shows Mcshield.exe dominating CPU time and when I kill this process, programs speed up markedly

Recent sequence of events has been:
- Uninstalled Norton and then installed McAfee antivirus & firewall software
- Deleted (stupidly) remaining files containing references to symantec, norton & nav (made backups before deleting)
- re-installed McAfee antivirus & firewall software (with some improvement in speed)
- followed the proceedure in 'Hello and Welcome to the TechSupportForum'
'what to do before you post a log...'
- set Ad-ware preferences and ran
- ran 'trend micro' virus scan
- ran Hijackthis (log file attached)
- ran Hijack This Analyser (report attached)

Mcshield.exe still dominates CPU time. Boot up time currently ~ 2 1/2 min

Would appreciate help on how can speed up programs

Hi rmc and welcome to TSF! Please copy/paste your logs in here, thanks.

Welp, the logs look pretty clean of malware. I will make a couple quick recommendations. When your reboot at end and reply, copy/paste a HJT full log this time, not the analyzed version. May move your thread over to the XP forum for follow-up.

============

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O23 - Service: SymWMI Service - Unknown - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe (file missing)

Reboot into Normal Mode and let us know if any help.

Hi,
I have a Siemens Scaleo P Pentium 4 3.4mhz computer with 512mb Ram, 149GB hard drive and have used 84.4GB, so there's plenty of free space. Over a period of time this has gradually slowed down, to the point where it can take 15 minutes or more before I can have a browser open and working. It's got to the point of fix it or bin it . Occasionally I do get a low memory warning. I recently bought PCTools Registry Mechanic and Spyware Doctor - but these made little or no difference. Registry Mechanic tells me that my system is slow, but does not seem to be able to improve it .
Sometimes when I boot up the system it will not start, and I have to switch it off and start again, other times the mouse will not work - if I do ctrl-alt-del then the mouse will work but I cannot use any buttons on the bottom bar, including the start button - I have to shut it down through task manager.

Having looked through other peoples suffering of slow computers, I see that often a request to run Hijackthis is made, so I have taken the liberty to run this already - details below.

Thanks in advance to anyone who will provide help and guidance to me.

About 5 days ago while Windows was loading I got a bluescreen error message (I have my computer set to restart straight away when this happens so I don't know what the message was). It kept restarting and restart and I had no idea what was wrong, I tried booting in safe mode but it kept restart once it got to MUP.SYS.

I used my boot disk to run a disk check which seemed to fix the error, now my computer is running very slowly and my CPU usage is very high even while my computer is running idle.

Attached is my HijackThis scan log. I hope someone can identify the error

Hi
My PC has recently slowed to a crawl - historically has run fast, but lately very slow. E.g, when I open a Word or Excel document, from clicking on open to file opening is about 12 seconds, where it used to be almost instant. Very frustrating!
I have looked in Process Explorer & can't really see anything too horrendous. I have a couple of programmes that use SQL server, and have, this afternoon, killed that process, with no increase in speed.
Am running Win XP Pro SP3 with 3GB RAM. Am wondering if there is a memory problem as I have also recently been unable to run some programmes together, which have in the past run fine - e.g. CorelDraw 10 & Page Plus X4 (Plus, if I have either of them open I can't open a pdf file.)
Any help gratefully received
Thanks

I've done everything recommended here. My Dell Inspiron 9300 [XP Pro SP2 1GB RAM] used to run very quickly. (about 2 years old) Recently, it runs more slowly. For example, a virus scan takes more time to launch. Opening programs takes longer, etc. I'm referring to the pc's operation, not the boot speed. Someone told me that's typical of Windowsand the solution is to reinstall Windows and that some people do that every 6-12 months! Any suggestions/solutions?Thanks. It was also suggested to make a disk image after the reinstall to save time in the future. Any recommendationswhich program to use? Slow Computer ChecklistBecause many members post about their computer responding slowly, BC is posting a summary checklist of general steps a member can take to resolve this problem, and briefly discussing the three most common causes: malware, uncontrolled applications, and lack of maintenance. MalwarePerhaps the greatest contributor to a poorly performing computer is malware. Usually this is associated with downloading an application that contains spyware, by not having browser security settings high enough, by carelessly downloading P2P files, or by failing to install security patches in a timely manner. Step 1. Update the definitions of your anti-virus and run a complete scan of your hard drive in Safe Mode. Resolve any unfixable issues. A friend's PC was running slowly so I have uninstalled all the old programs they no longer use, stopped the start up of those they don't need to run at start up. I also ran adaware to clear up anything, nothing really meaningful found.

The performance does seem to be a little better but wonder if someone could have a look at the HJT log to see if anything jumps out at them as it shouldn't be there. Thanks

So I went to tools-internet option-advanced- reset. I reset IE and it runs like lightning now- maybe this will help someone else. There must have ben some add-ons lagging it down. works great now.

Hi guys. I'm helping my girlfriend with her computer. You've been very helpful in the past! The main issue is that her computer is running so slowly that it's almost impossible to use it when not in safe mode (which is the only way I was able to run these scans). I noticed she had utorrent installed which I removed though she states she hasn't messed with torrents in a long time. Please help if possible. Thank you!

My WinXP Professional computer has been running very slowly. In looking at the task manager, winlogon.exe seems to be running around 95% most of the time.

I have run NAV and found no viruses and Adaware and found a few files that were removed after the scan.

In addition, the task bar and much of the windows are blacked out.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Computer running VERY Slowly

Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

I don't know what the "freedom hidden window" thing is you are seeing, some more info or a screenshot would be helpful.

It might be associated with this > C:\Program Files\Common Files\Command Software\dvpapi.exe

http://www.google.com/search?hs=tyX...idden+window"++"command+software"&btnG=Search

I see it present on other scanlogs where that is a reported issue.

But it's quite possible that your slow internet is due to the parental controls associated with McAfee -- if it is busy filtering.

You're 3rd party firewalll may be a factor too.

A:Solved: PC running very slowly

Well, I'm COMPLETELY uneducated in the "hijack this" log's.

With that said, I'm pretty sure I see two different anti-virus programs taking up space at the same time.

I'm guessing you are using McAfee and you used to have Norton. Norton IMO has a tradition of using up resources and can be hard to uninstall. (kinda like a virus!)

There is a special remover that may help. I stress MAY.

Either way, I don't think having two anti-virus programs of any sort running at the same time is going to help you.

May be the problem. Maybe not.

I'd get rid of one or the other though.

My PC is running Internet Explorer 9. Recently I've experienced delays of 5 - 10 seconds in getting some pages to load. Not aways, but often. I believe I have plenty of available capacity, so I don't think that's the issue. Have others experienced a similar problem with IE 9? Is it possible I need to change some settings? Sure would appreciate some help. Thanks. RCD

Hi guys,

I am unsure as to whether I have posted this in the right forum or not. I do not think my PC is running slowly because of a virus so, I guessed it was just 'general' XP support. If I have posted in the wrong forum, I would be grateful if you could move it to the correct forum. Thanks.

Anyway, over the last couple of days, my laptop has been running very slowly. It seems to take a lot longer to boot up fully (ie. all the icons to load on the desktop) than normal. Today it took probably 20 minutes. Other performance appears to have been affected as well - for example, it took about 20/25 minutes to load Control Panel and Add or Remove Programs.

However, having left my computer to 'sit' for a few hours, it now appears to be running slightly better. So, clearly, it is a boot up problem. Now, I do know that I have quite a few processes running but am unsure as to which ones I can close without affecting my system!!! Nor do I know how to post the details of those processes here. Task manager says that, at the moment, I have 70 processes taking up 40% CPU. I have one hard drive (of 74.4gb which has 13.1gb free space).

The steps that I have already taken are: virus scan and removal of some unwanted software. The virus/spyware scan did not pick anything up.

I will be happy to provide any further system information and would be very grateful if you could help me out on this one.

Would it just be easier to wipe the hard drive and start afresh?

A:Laptop running slowly

Download CCleaner and delete temp files, run Registry cleaner too. Next download www.malwarebytes.org run full scan, delete nasties. Next go to Start/Run and type cmd in the command prompt type chkdsk /f/r Type a Y to reboot the computer. The Check Disk Utility will run at next boot up. Then Defrag the computer.

Hi there,

I hope someone can help.

I have an HP desktop running Windows XP Home (with the SP2). Until recently I have NEVER had any problems at all with this machine.

A few days ago I admit I tried to download a *dubious* file, and unfortunately all hell seemingly broke loose! My Norton AntiVirus 2007 made no attempt to block or acknowledge any virus or attack. Internet Explorer was producing pop-ups constantly and everything was running at such an incredibly slow speed that it was practically impossible to perform a basic task like open Google. One website recommended I try Spyware Doctor. This found 126 infections of various type. It seemed to be saying one of the worst was Virtumonde. After 'deleting' these viruses I was immediately inundated with Norton and Spyware Doctor pop-ups saying various terrible things were being blocked and trying to attack my system. If anything, my PC was slower AFTER using 'Doctor!

I did a Google search on Virtumonde and found this site. Someone else's post recommended VundoFix which seemed to work (found about 7 files I believe) and said it got rid of them on reboot.

I was STILL having major issues. I ran Norton scans and Spyware Doctor scans and even Windows Defender scans, sometimes finding the odd spyware or tracking cookie, which it deleted.

I've since tried SpyBot and Ad-Aware 7.0 (as recommended by BC) - these found a few more 'infections' and seem to have dealt with them.

I no longer have an... Read more

Hello and welcome, The first thing to do, would be to check how many processes your system is running, you can do this by looking in the task manager under the processes tab. to free up some resources, you should go to start then run and type services.msc a list will pop up, http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm this site will help you choose the configuration that works best for you.Download a program called advanced windows care, http://iobit.com/AdvancedWindowsCarePersonal/index.html tell it to do a scan to fix some problems.http://www.ccleaner.com/ will help you clean up your system from unnecessary files.http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag/index.php is a good and fast defrag tool.

OK so I mainly use my PC for work but the old Dell had was beginning to groan under it's workload and the hard drive was nearly full. As it was about 5 year old I decided to replace it with something faster.

The result was I bought a 64bit, AMD FX (tm)-4130 quad-core processor 3.80GHz, with 16GB of ram and 2 x 250GB Samsung SSD's. It's built on a GA-78LMT-USB3 Gigabyte motherboard

This seemed like overkill and I was anticipating it would fly through my stuff, mainly Excel, Webplus X8 and a bit of word processing all run on Windows 7 professional, but it actually seems to be slower than the old Dell.

I've tried everything I can find, cleared clutter out, reduced the size of my outlook file, been through numerous "do these 10 things to speed up your computer"! lists but it just seems very slow and sometimes hangs with a big Excel spreadsheet.

Before I finally just bin the thing and buy another Dell, has anyone got any ideas of what it might be. I suspect it's got to be something radical simply because anything I do doesn't seem to help?

The base "Windows Experience" scores are processor:7.2, RAM:7.2, graphics:6.6, primary hard disk:6.4 if that helps?

Thank you for your help in this

Hi there,

I've already posted recently concerning problems with one of my sons' computers, so here is the 2nd one (running XP).

No error messages, no viruses, spyware or malware etc found, but the whole system is running very slowly. I thought I'd solved things when I got rid off 150,000 temp files, but, while things are a bit better, it's still not real good.

I've had some issues with a programme called SweetIM from Macrogaming, but I think I've managed to get rid of that.

Oh yeah - nearly forgot - when I try to shut down, I get one of those 'The program is not responding' messages for iexplore.exe. When I hit 'End Now', it goes to a 'Ending Program - please wait' message, but then back to 'The program is not responding'. And it continues in that loop 'til I stop the process using Windows Task Manager (and even that takes a few goes to open).

And one more thing - I sometimes get a message saying that 'Spooler SubSystem App has encountered a problem and needs to close' and inviting me to tell Microsoft about the problem.

Anyway - here's the log file. Any help much appreciated!

Having run ComboFix, without a helper, I came to the ComboFix Log File and the instructions stated that the computer needed further analysis to find out if there were any further infections.I do seem to have lost that file probably because I must have saved it incorrectly so as requested I have attached the DDS files.
i could not create a GMER Log as the scan did not complete after running for 3 hours Windows shut down with the message "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer." DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. When it tried to restart itself I had the message "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" which I did with no response.
I had to press and hold the "ON" button to shut down after which it started correctly

Over the past 4-5 days I've noticed my computer is running extremely slow. It's somewhat bareable, as I can still play games but say I want to play poker and web surf often times it starts to freeze/delay. Sometimes even if I click on a web page it will sometimes pause for a second as if it has to reload. Feels like I'm on a Pentium 2 or something even though I have a Phenom X3. I don't think it's a virus because nothing fishy has been going on, and I did check my hijackthis and it seems alright to me. But I pasted it below just in case...

From what I can see in your log, a scan for malware and spyware and other "nasties" is in order.

Download and save these 2 programs:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46

SUPERAntiSpyware 4.42.0.1000

Close all open windows first, install them both, then restart your computer.

Follow these instructions next:

Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Click "Updates(tab) - Check for Updates".

When the definition files have updated, click "OK".

Click "Scanner(tab) - Perform quick scan - Scan".

If infections are found during the scan, the number of infections will be highlighted in red.

When the scan is finished, click "Show Results".

Make sure that everything is selected, then click "Remove Selected".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click "Yes".

Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.

Click "Logs"(tab).

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "Open".

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here.

Start SUPERAntiSpyware.

Click "Check for Updates".

When the definition files have updated, click "Close".

Click "Scan your Computer - Perform Quick Scan - Next".

If infections or problems are found during the scan, a list will appear.

Oh yeah, Norton Antivirus said it fround a trojan today, but was unable to delete it so I felt it was time for another checkup. Heres my log

Greetings, and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

Viewpoint Manager

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."

I was hoping I could get some help removing excess programs from my girlfriend's PC. It's starting to run excessively slowly. We received it as a gift from my dad and I think he had installed quite a bit of software we will never use.

It is a HP laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium.
HP Pavilion dv9000.

When all is said and done, I'd like to have Picasa installed on it to edit pictures and Internet Explorer. Pretty much everything else goes unused.
Thanks!

Hello. I've used these forums twice before with great success in dealing with my past computer issues and I am now helping a friend with her computer. She has a laptop which has been running very slowly for a week or so. It's even refused to boot up a few times (gets stuck in the loading screen). When it finally gets started, it takes a long time to browse the internet (just clicking on IE will freeze it up). I also know she ran torrent programs such as utorrent (which I deleted). This was not a well-protected computer in the past - I'm pretty sure the first time microsoft updates were installed was as recently as a few weeks ago.

Hello, my computer is running very slowly, it takes forever to load pages on the internet, I cant sign in to check my email, and I can't download files because it says transferring and nothing happens. My computer is also very slow on start-up and there is this putt-putt sound that it makes when something is loading, etc. Last week I had a system.exe-bad image pop-up every time I started windows and randomly throughout, and I did some research and used combofix to get rid of it. It worked, I guess it detected that I had a rootkit, but my computer is still running slow, perhaps even slower now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My computer is a dell with windows xp. This happens several times a day.===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not fa... Hello puternoviceiam and welcome to TSF,

Nothing really showing up in that log. Let's try some general cleaning and an online scan.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it.

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!

Run Cleanup! using the following configuration:

1. Click Options...
2. Set the slider to Standard CleanUp!
3. Uncheck the following:Delete Newsgroup cache
Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
Scan local drives for temporary files
4. Click OK
5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.
* CleanUp! will not create any backups!!

------------------------

Perform an online scan using Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner Click Check Now & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
Please ignore any entry it finds and wants you to... Read more

Hi there, I'm wondering if someone can check my HiJackThis scan and let me know if there's something on my machine.Symptoms: - no browser hijacking, but my machine has been running slower and slower every day for about two or three weeks now (even in safemode). - window contents take several moments to appear. Choose a drive, click on it, the window opens, but contents take 4/5 seconds (or longer) to appear...- switching between windows takes a few moments, even when there are very few apps running. - drop down menus on windows take a few seconds to drop down. - I have to click more than once to get any function to begin (save. Save. SAVE!). - When the buttons finally do seem to activate, it takes moments for the function to begin. What I've tried so far: A. - went through the checklist found at: "Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware". Did everything suggested.- discs were recently defragged- there aren't a lot of services running on my machine (i used Spybot a few months ago to help me turn off unwanted services).- there aren't any obvious culprits in taskmanager/processes; nothing there seems to be running too high. A couple of SVCHOSTS.EXE files are running about 20-24,000K, and one of them seems to have a lot of virtual memory devoted to it (virtual memory starts at 24,000, and creeps up to about 100,000k after about a day of running, but levels off there.- for some reason Spybot shows that FIVE instances of CTFMON.EXE are run... I've been having a slow experience with my computer for the past while. It used to be pretty quick at loading and booting up in Windows and running games and everything, but now a days its starting to become somewhat sluggish. My computer is 4 years old so I'm aware that that could be a factor in its performance, but I also know that it could still keep up in gaming and such if a few things were corrected. Examples of issues I notice are slow boot times into Windows (part where its at the blue windows loading screen), somewhat slow shutdown time, slow time to load up tray icons (MSN, Firewall, Anti Spyware, Volume Control, ect), sluggish performance in games in terms of framerate even with settings at minimum (aware this may be a video card issue), slow load time when opening applications like My Computer for the first time. I was just looking for some insight and feedback to see what some people, experienced with this issue, may give in order to get my computer back running the way it used to be.

The amount of games installed wont be helping, Check that your Pagefile isnt too large. Also, go to Properties of your main HDD and run Disk Cleanup (with all options selected) that should also free you some HDD space.

Hello,

I have Dell XPS m140 with 512 MB ram. When I boot up, my page file shoots up to ~650MB and hovers around that number. The system is very slow when I try to do anything. I had a virus about 6 months ago and went through a lot of hassle getting it removed but Iím wondering if I still have some remnants hanging around. I donít remember the name of the virus but if someone could look at the log below and tell me if you see anything out of the ordinary that might be a clue, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance to all.

Adaware-6 is no longer supported. Uninstall that version.

Download AdAware SE Personal: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Install the program and launch it.

On the bottom right-hand corner of the main window click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

In the main window: Click Start and under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

To start the scan, click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and then click Next)

Reboot and post another log.

Hello,

My computer is running very slowly, and I cannot figure out why. I defragmented, ran a virus scan, etc. I also use adaware and spybot regularly to check for spyware. Nothing seems to help. I am confused because this computer has run well up until recently. It is older--we purchased it in about 2002-2003.

In case this is important--it is a Dell and I'm running Windows XP.

Can anyone help?

Thank you!

Hello, My laptop has been starting up very slowly lately and I have had some issues with spyware/trojans etc. I believe I have eliminated the malware but my computer still runs slowly. One other problem is that when I have a window open (mozilla, MS Word, etc), every thirty seconds or so the window becomes inactive and I can no longer type on the screen unless I click on the window again. It seems like a small issue but it is rather frustrating. I have run Spybot and Ad-Aware, which both came up clean, and I also use Symantec AV.Here is a HJT log.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 2:42:34 PM, on 8/24/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EvtEng.exeC:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\S24EvMon.exeC:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\ZcfgSvc.exeC:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\WLKeeper.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\s... Hi,

Recently, my computer seems to be lagging when I play my games, such as Assassin's Creed II. I've checked the requirements for the game and I definitely meet them but the game still runs slowly. The strange thing is that it used to run just fine. This is my problem. I have no idea what's gone wrong, and would love some help trying to fix it.

When I log into http://www.care2.com then access my email within care2 the following has just started to happen. I get the following dialog box:

"The Script on this page is causing IE to run slowly - If it continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the script?". If I click NO, the page opens that I wanted, if I click YES, I get a partly loaded page - I then go to Task Manager/Application and it shows "not responding" against care2 pages open, so I end the task.

I have checked my Internet Option/advanced/browsing, but cannot locate a problem with the items enabled. I have not touched any settings within Internet Options/advanced at this stage. The same thing happens when I use Firefox.

Thanks, would be pleased of some help when possible.

Happy New Year to all

A:IE and Firefox running slowly

It is a problem with the script on the page you are on and what has to be done is to notify the owners of the page there is a problem. If it was your computer then this would be a problem on all of the pages you visit. I would go back to the page and see if there is a way to leave them an email about the problem.

Hi there;

I have Asuru laptop, Windows 7 64-bit with 8 GB RAM.

Just bought it 5 days ago. However, recently the booting up process has been horrendously slow, taking ten minutes for even the screen to refresh.

I loaded up the laptop in Safe Mode; this seemed to help somewhat. In an attempt to fix the issues, I went to Event Viewer. Was not able to access Event viewer or the information contained within it, was presented with the following message:

"Event Log Service is unavailable".

Please help! I have ran CHKDSK to little avail.

Well, the title sums it up. My computer is running painfully slow and I think I may have a virus or malware. Shockwave Flash has been crashing often, so I've disabled it. Aside from that, start up takes longer than it should, Google Chrome crashes at least once every time I use it and pop ups have become a pretty common occurrence. Programs like iTunes and Word freeze and crash frequently, too. I've cleared some space on my hard drive and run Windows diagnostics, but not much has helped. Here is my Hijackthis log. Hallo,

The performance of my laptop (Toshiba P100-160 Satellite Pro, Vista installed at purchase) has dropped off over the last couple of months and I am not sure why.

It is somewhat erratic, but can take 5+ minutes from turning on to being able to start an application. It can take a couple of minutes to open a Word/Excel file in Office 2007 (dunno why I didn't get OpenOffice...) and much longer if opening from the web.

Occasionally it can totally freeze for a few minutes making clicking noises before it starts working again.

When typing here, or using clients like MSN, I often find that I type much faster than the text comes up on screen, and find myself waiting to see if I made any typos (and I'm no touch-typist).

I was just living with the slowness until I went away for a couple of weeks with a friend, taking her MacBook which was lightening fast in comparison.

I have tried a number of things to improve the situation:

Moved all my photos from notebook to portable hard drive
Moved all films to portable hard drive
Removed a stack of programs from the start-up menu
Defrag hard drive
Clear temporary files etc

I also changed some visual settings in windows to try and put less strain on the processor, such as removing transparency.

Removing photos and video means I have 47.4GB free (of 91.4 available). I'm surprised there is that much space taken up as I removed a whole load of games etc too.

The thing that takes longest is probably using Windows Explor... Read more
