Q: Searching

I have a new problem, when I have a folder open and I type the first letter in the search box, Windows Explorer shuts down and closes all windows?

This is new, and I did recently run Windows Update and did some updating.

Any ideas?

Bill

A: Searching

Lets get you working and then we worry about the consequence.
With a system restore, go back to when you were working. I guess before the updates. Go back a few days before the updates.

I have 2 computers that I have completely reformatted & Clean Installed Windows 7 on them both. I Have 2 Seperate win 7 disk for them. 1 is a desktop, Other is Dell Inspiron 1545. (Labtop) is the one im working on right now, (testing) I Have Done This Many Times In The Past With No Problems. now im having problems with both getting any more upgrades after windows update installs its version "Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320". After This They Both Hung Up. So For The Labtop, I Have Totally Reformatted Twice From Disk trying to fix this with no success. im stuck on internet explorer 8 and it wont let me go to almost none of the microsoft support pages to be able to run-try other fixes.
I have managed to run the sfc /scannow and it did not find any violations/problems.
I Have Also Downloaded The Stand Alone/Rediness Tool and ran it. It Still Just Says Searching For Updates. Not Sure What Else I Need To Do, Any Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated. Logs are attached.

A:windows updates searching, give error 80080005, back to searching

Hi Marie318 & welcome to SevenForums. I'll try to help you.
How long did you let windows update run? It sometimes takes hours usually 3-4 for the updates to appear. some reports of 24-48, but rare. SURT takes a while to complete, depending on the issues it finds.

I usually set my computer to sleep never, start windows update & call it a night. when I check in the morning, 200+ updates are ready to install. If you have 4gb of ram, choose about 100 or so & they should install, for the most-part. Trying to install all of them at once will most likely produce "out of memory" error. WU doesn't choose them in any particular order even though some are prerequisites for others. SP1 is a major one.

If you start task manager under the performance tab, while downloading updates, you will see the ram load. all updates are temporarily stored in ram until Windows verifies each update is complete & digital signature is valid.

Well...when I put an MMC or SD card in the slot after a long wait the autoplay dialog box comes up with the flashlight doing it's searching thing but nothing ever really happens. bummer! task manager tells me that "my computer" is not responding. This is a virtually new pc, about 2 months ago we got DSL, 2 weeks after that we got trojan.vundo and I am thinking that during the exorcism we might have lost something we needed. We have used the cards with the pc in the cameras previously with no problems. I am hoping this is a no-brainer quick fixer!!! Thanks a bunch.

Hi There!

I want my Windows XP Search back.

All I want to do is hit F3 type in a filename or a wildcard, have it search in every folder and every file for a filename match and show me the list of names. I have tried everything I can think of but I can't find a way to get it to search inside system folders.

Is there a way to get the behaviour I want to occur?

My son wanted some help on one of his games and downloaded something that he thought would work, He knows now that it won't. In addition to that he now has something called www-searching.com which I cannot, for the life of me, get the stupid thing off his HP Stream x360. I've run Ccleaner, Malwarebytes, and h=just finished downloading, installing, and running ad-aware with nor results. Ok, malware cleaned off a host of other shiz but the searching thing still remains. Every time I run Chrome, I'm redirected. Firefox forces me to malwarebytes.com.

I don't know if this is an associated problem but I also get a rundll error message when his laptop boots up.

1. I would love some help with this. 2. I would love some recommendations on the best (effective and price) on NetNanny or other similar programs so I don't have to keep putting out the fires. I'd love it if the fires never started.

Thanks in advance.

Whenever I use search to locate a lost picture or file, it always pulls up other files that don't even correspond to the name I inputted. Why is this and how can I keep it from happening because it's damned frustrating.

A:Searching for just what you're looking for?

You can use wildcards. It won't completely solve the problem, but may help.

If you know the file you are looking for has "pic" in the name, for example, and you know it is a jpg file, search for "pic*.jpg".

You get the idea.

I am looking for a power supply thats fits a Dell Optiplex GXI tower, original is 230 v without power off switch, I would like to find one with power off switch if possible.

A:I been searching every which a way

Well that depends on if you are going to be hooking the power supply up to a Dell motherboard. Most Dell power supply's are proprietary and can only be bought from Dell. Hooking up a non Dell standard power supply could blow up your system board.

My sister in law is having trouble with her computer booting up. It makes a series of beeps (about 25 she tells me) and then says something like searching for IDE drive. It stays there for a long time (about 7 minutes) then goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor.

She lives an hour away from me so I am not able to go over there until next week to take a look.

I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice I can pass along to her? I've never come across this problem before.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A:Searching for IDE

Worst possibility is the hard disk drive has died.
Perhaps the best possibility is the CMOS battery has failed and needs replacing.

But make sure there is not a CD accidentally left in the drive, as it could be trying to boot from it.

To get any error message suggests the computer is at least booting to the BIOS level, so its not all bad news.

I use search a lot and have some difficulties with 7 search.
I discovered in a post on some other forum (can't find it now) that there is a search "language" that allows powerful boolean searching.
If you know what I'm talking about, can you point me to a reference that I could use to structure my searches?
Or, better yet, a free download that provides an easy to use front end for searching.....

Greetings,
My son, in an effort to improve his gaming downloaded something wretched. While I've been able to clear most it, every time a browser in Chrome is opened he is redirected to www-searching.com. I've tried to change the homepage in settings. I've run Malwarebytes as well as Ccleaner. I've run Avira. Nothing has helped. I've opened Firefox and I'm redirected to Malwarebytes.com.

he also has a rundll error when he restarts his computer and I'm assuming that this is due to something that I got rid of during the malwarebytes cleaning. His computer is:

Ok so first off I am computer illiterate. I tried downloading a game. It said it was virus free. Well foolish me, I believed it. It downloaded other stuff. Now originally, I thought I uninstalled all of the unwanted programs. I ran a scan with my Microsoft Security Essentials and my Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium and removed the things which came up.
When I opened my browsers I noticed www.searching.com. And no matter how many scans I run, I try changing my settings to default, I try getting rid of the extensions, it still opens up as www.searching.com.
I have not been using it as a browser (I open a new window and use google). My computer seems to be running normally otherwise, but if it can cause my laptop damage, I would like it removed.
Please help. I came here because I really don't know what else to do and I just don't want to download another program which might cause more damage. Thanks

A:Searching

All of the keywords you type must have 4 or more characters. For example 'virus' has 5 characters, 'test' has 4 characters etc.
If you type a word that has less than 4 characters it won't find anything.

this question is actually for my mom's computer... she is completely computer illiterate, and so is my sister who lives with her... they constantly open emails and such that are always immediate red flags... well her computer runs pretty slow, and it's not that old... it runs on windows xp... so i was searching through her computer thinking, well maybe the hard drive is just too small and she has too many pictures, videos, songs, etc. that are taking up entirely too much of the space... so i start burning as much as possible, and then deleting them... uninstalling or deleting any programs that she doesn't use, etc. which is when i come across the windows folder on the c: drive... at the very top of the folder are many folders that look similar to "$NtUninstallKB923689$" all in blue text... this was obviously pretty suspicious looking... so i went on google and typed "$NtUninstallKB923689$" in and ended up on this site... i'm not completely computer illiterate, but i don't know too much about them... after reading a few other forums, from this site and others, it seems like when things are showing up with that title, it's associated with a virus... so i'm just wondering if that is a virus, and also what i can do to get rid of it.... like i said the only thing that seems to be too affected by this is the working speed of the computer, i'm not getting any error messages, or being redirected to any sites when i'm on... when i search for a file, if it is in my music or documents, i get two results when there is actually only one. is there a setting i could change or something? i put a screenshot just in case to show what im talking about. it seems to think my documents and C:\Documents and Settings\Samantha\My Documents are two different places. this is incredibly annoying when searching for duplicates of music..

A:searching

Right click on my documents folder and go to properties, and see what location it points to. If it points to C:\Documents and Settings\Samantha\My Documents it is the same folder if it points somewhere else then you are saving your files in 2 different places.

Hey all, I have windows vista home basic and i am searching for something.

Originally the directions i found were in windows xp but they got me to the same place in vista.

There is a place where you can change some numerical values to either 0 or 1. Doing this greatly improves your pc's RAM speed. When i did it, i noticed an increase in pc speed and preformance. All my programs ran faster and all my games ran at high fps. Well i need to find this place again. I've searched everywhere for the origional information but have found nothing. The result of, say, a word search in Google, for example, is a block of text the last line of which is the web site address. Usually, to access that website, you click on the first line of the block of text which takes you to that website. Recently, when I do this I am redirected to another search engine or, sometimes, to a totally unrelated website. Can anyone explain to me what is happening here and a possible remedy. It would be much appreciated.

So I've tried everything with this site. Here is what is going on/what I did

-The program (and any other associated program) is not listed in my computer under "Programs and Features". Any type of spyware/malware/adware programs are not installed (that are viewable).

-In my internet browser the homepage is set to Google, however I still get sent to searching.com when I first start my browser (Internet Explorer).

-I already reset my browser to default settings under "internet options" and "tools".

-I installed, ran, and deleted any type of suspicious files picked up from anti-virus programs which are:

Malwarebytes
Super Anti Spyware
Hitman Pro

My main question is this: Is there anyway (FREE) way to get this crap removed from my computer WITHOUT me having to go into my registry and manually delete everything associated with it?

It's not a huge deal that its my homepage, its more annoying and if anything it still shows my PC is hijacked.

Any help/advice is GREATLY appreciated!!

Our office is in need of a network storage solution. It's a small business and we don't have the money to hire a dedicated IT professional, so I am fitting the bill for that. I have some NAS questions that I need to answer before I make a decision.

How do most NAS drives deal with multiple user access? Say someone has an excel chart open and someone else tries to access it at the same time.

Will a NAS support links between excel worksheets? Our current cloud solution won't update linked charts unless they are all open.

How bad will the performance be if we have 30 people in the office using a NAS server at the same time?

A:Searching for NAS

NAS like anything else, can be done with a big powerful server, or a simple shared disk on a system sitting in a closet. You lack IT support, so what was your physical plan for making NAS available?

NAS only shared the charts, if they wont update unless they are open I dont think that is going to change just by hosting it someplace else.

30 people? Depends on the server and what each person is doing at a time. Things like excel sheets in my opinion are not a heavy load so it wouldnt be too bad at all. but if 30 people were like streaming video off of it, now that might make it slow down a little.

I'm trying to clean up my daughter's laptop.  I've run Malwarebytes and quarantined a bunch of stuff.  (I've ignored the many "pup..." items it found, and only quarantined the items it recommended quarantining.  Was that a mistake?)

But it's still got a browser startup page hijack to www-searching.com.  I haven't played with it enough to see if it's getting redirects.  But the startup page is certainly screwed.  This is the case for both Firefox and Internet Explorer.  In both cases, the startup page is set to something else (www.google.com or www.facebook.com) but they still go to www-searching.com on startup.

All the "fixes" for this hijack I see on the web involve the install/uninstall control panel and the add-on/extension menu in each browser.  I have uninstalled a bunch of things that were obviously adware/malware, but I can't find anything that looks like it could be this startup hijack.  Also, I've gone through both browsers' add-on/extension menus and I don't see anything there either.

Should I rerun Malwarebytes and quarantine every "pup..." that it finds?  Where else might the startup page be specified that it affects multiple browsers?

Windows 8.1

Thanks.

Hi. I have always kept Internet Explorer V6 up-to-date so I installed IE7 and the additions from a security point of view are good. There is a lot more clutter than I was used to in previous versions of IE, but I suppose I will have to live with that.

The big problem, and it may be a show-stopper, is the apparent lack of the pop-up Search menu (like the one for favourites, Feeds and History obtained by clicking the STAR) that can be auto-hide in full-screen mode. It may seem like a small detail, but I think it was a very useful feature that I used all the time while searching. Being able to have the results of your search always available and not having to switch windows was an immense plus, and I'm afraid that without it, all the security additions pale miserably.

Is there a way of doing this in V7 or do I have to go back to V6?

I'm sorry to say that l've lost it, my brain has died.
France has reloaded my system and i've been hours upon hours sorting their mistakes. Nearly there though.
Right, when l bring up IE, all that is is in the top right search panel is Bing. When l do a search through this all l get French addresses, although the http addresses don't seem to point to FR.
All l want is google as the main search provider but how do l add/change this?

I was wondering if any one knows of a www free people search that I can use. All the ones I have found you have to pay. Also is there a key of doing web searches to actually find what you are looking for> I do not have the time or patients to search through all the sites that result after a search. Especially when half of them do not hold any relevance to what I am searching for. One more----what is the best search engine to use? Thanks for your time.

A:Web searching

I find Google, on a consistent basis, is the best search engine. On occasion, I will use http://vivisimo.com when I have more of a scientific or detailed oriented search need.

RE: Finding someone, I think you may be in for more work than you describe. Here, however, is an artice from PCWorld that may be of assistance but there is a time/energy commitment:

Hi all,
I'm a new Windows user with a hopefully easy question. It seems like the IE7 address bar really wants to search for things. For example, websites without the 'www' in front of them get searched for instead of just going to the site.

My issue is that I need to connect to an IP address, but when I enter it into the address bar, I get a "Live Search" result for the IP address instead of just connecting to the address.

I've looked through the 'Internet Options' dialogue as well as the 'Change Search Defaults' dialogue, but I can't figure out how to turn off this automatic search so that I can connect to the IP address.

I'm sure I'm missing something really obvious, but could some kind soul tell me how to disable this automatic searching so that it never searches for terms I've entered into the address bar? I feel as I'm a grown adult, I'm capable of putting addresses in the address bar, and search terms in the little search bar to the right of it...

Thanks!
Morgan

Normal operation of the Address Bar:www.myfavorite.com = search

First of all I am really not sure what the problem is, but it is definitely a 'just me' problem so I'm sure it's got to be some sort of malware. It only started happening in the last 24 hours or so, I was searching fine on Wednesday morning

When searching in Google or Yahoo, (whether using Firefox or IE), the first result always comes up with a xxx.qxmp.us site as the link, but everything else is normal and all the other search results are exactly what they're expected to be.
Screencaps of what happens:

I have run AVG Virus Scan, I have run Ad-Aware, I have run Spyware Doctor, I have done a system restore to April 15. Someone recommended that I run HijackThis also, and post the results here to find out if that's what the problem is.

Well I don't know quite how this happened, but now when I start to type in a url in the address bar it starts to fill it in for me, of course it doesn't always complete a url

examples
I type "h", it completes h:\ (yes I have an H drive)

I type "u" it completes u.S. Access Board which can be found in documents and settings\owner\favorites. If I continue to type after that appears in the address bar, by adding a "t" (ut) the address bar changes to "utilities" which is a folder on my desktop

If I type in a "2" it completes "2008" again a folder on my desktop, if I hit the enter key it opens the folder in IE and shows me the contents of it

If I type "s" I get "search.freefind.com/" which when I hit enter brings me to this URL http://www.freefind.com/ neither of which are bookmarked, nor do they look the least bit familiar. A search of my computer using the Win search function does not find any reference to this in any folder
If I continue to type so it says "safety" it does not bring up the folder of that name which can be found in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents. If I hit enter it tries to find a URL named safety, and I get the Page Cannot be Displayed Message

so clearly it's not searching through my whole computer, it seems to be only searching the desktop and favorites and somewhere else as if I type
moz I get mozy.com. Which I have visited, a search o... Read more

I keep getting redirected. It's happened in yahoo, google it doesn't matter if I use firefox or IE. So I search for something and I end up at some strange site, I then go back click again then I get to where I want. If I type in the address so far that will work. It just doubles my work day since most of it is searching. Please be patient I'm a bit slow when it comes to the workings of the computer. Thank you

Hi

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. I am running Windows XP.
At start-up, my computer opens a window [Common] that lists four files: _helper. dll, helper.dll, _helper.sig, helper.sig.
When I close this window, I see my desktop, but...
my taskbar has changed
Internet Explorer will not open
Norton will not perform a scan
Sytem Restore will not run

I downloaded (via laptop) Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program
It installs, but when I try to run I get: Runtime error 372

I was able to run Hijackthis and have a log if necessary.

Following an infection by BlazeFind, and apparently Lycos Sidesearch, Bargain Buddy, n-Case, and DyFuca Internet Optimizer, that seem to have come in together, my IE6 can't find any URL.

It simply can't find google and when I type other URL's it converts to formats like www.www.cnn.com.com and cycles through .edu .org etc.

I've ruled out a sticky Ctrl key because it also happens when a full URL is typed, and the DSL connection is working fine for other applications.

AdAware and NAV and Spybot all think I'm clean, with current updated definitions.

I tried reinstalling WinME but it stalls early in the process, with repeated efforts to make it work.

A few days after this started, one of the other PC's on the same home LAN developed this symptom too but then self-healed after running all the cleaning software that hasn't helped this troubled computer. Isn't that weird!

Many thanks

The feature is helpful and even reminds the user to be careful. If you want a different Search Engine from Bing, you can change it. I prefer other browsers with a separate search box, but they still search when a typed URL doesn't match any existent ones.

I would like your help, please, towards locating Proplus.MSI which is apparently a prerequisite to re-installing Microsoft XP Professional With Front Page.

The background to my request is that, having removed Itunes from my list of currently installed programs and updates I am no longer able to gain access to any of my documents that were created using Word, even from my back-up CD or memory stick, each attempt resulting in the following messages:

1. Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft XP Professional With Front Page.

2. The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click "OK" to try again or enter an alternative path to a folder containing the installation package "PROPLUS.MSI" in the box below.

3. The file is not a valid installation package for the product Microsoft XP Professional With Front Page. Try to find the installation package "PROPLUS.MSI" in a folder from which you can install Microsoft XP Professional With Front Page.

4. Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network or CD ROM drive. For other potential solutions to this problem see C:/ProgramFiles/MicrosoftOffice/Office10/1033/SETUP.HLP.

It appears that removing Itunes has affected an important Microsoft file or a link to it, something which my enquiries so far have suggested is not an isolated occurrence. I have been unable to locate either an alternative path (mess... Read more

Hi,
I'm not sure where this question belongs to, so forgive me if I'm in the wrong place.

I seem to have a problem with google searching. When I google-search something it only gives me links to hijackthis logs. I even do the advance search, etc but still finding a lot unanswered search.

I was trying to search for items while fixing my own HJT log and also friends' logs.
So is there a trick to get a good result while using google? or is there a better search engines out there?
Thanks.

~Emily

A:Google searching an .exe or dll etc.

Hi Rose,So you're analyzing your own and your friend's logs, eh?Well, as a member of the Boot Camp at SWI, I learned that doing a Google search is a bit of a last resort, mostly because of all the unnecessary links it can give (like HJT logs at different forums. If you don't already know about this tutorial, here is a link to a very good one to help with analyzing logs:http://hometown.aol.co.uk/jrmc137/hjttutorial/tutorial.htmIt also gives links to HJTHot key, a good little program to aid in log analysis. Plus loads of information on what the entries are in the logs, where to go to research them and how to use SpywareBlaster to research as well. It's been recently updated and added to. Have you ever thought about joining the Boot Camp or any HJT training program such as they have at SpywareInfo, SpywareWarrior , etc?You can learn a lot and be more effective as well.Good luck!Deb

Asking for opinions on AVs will guarantee you dozens of different replies. You might want to have a look here

Many of the AVs are pretty similar so sometimes it can be about finding one that you like, that you can understand and one that suits your own system set up. You'll find general guidance and tips here

My mother recently bought a Macbook from craigslist. We then used it to purchase xcode, and a bit later two transactions were made in Mexico. This was actually not too far from where we bought the laptop.

From what I've read, remote virus infections are rare, and the real danger is self-installed viruses that are hard to detect. This would make perfect sense in this situation, as there were no other online purchases made with the card. I know this really seems more like a PC forum, but I am wondering if anyone knows anything I can do to search and remove the keylogger, or even where I should go to ask. Thank you for your time.

A:Searching Mac for keyloggers

There are several ways to detect a keylogger on a mac, from simply reviewing the processes running on the computer to using a mac os spy detection program.

Step 1 Open the Activity Monitor to check for unknown process. This system tool will allow you to view the programs (processes) currently running on your computer.

Step 2 Check and Research any unfamiliar processes running in your ?Activity Monitor.? Critical system processes sometimes have unrecognizable names, however, and keyloggers may have a name that sounds legitimate.

Step 3 Download and install a mac keylogger detector or another software firewall. This type of mac software alerts you when another program tries to connect to the Internet. It will detect a keylogger for mac before it sends information over the Internet, and allow you to block it.

If you place this topic in the Mac OS, you may get more replies.

Hi

Maybe this is by design but its got me stumped!

I have windows XP pro. If I put a cd in my cd rom drive that I know has certain documents eg: Word docs and click Start>Search>For Files and Folders. I specify to search ONLY the cd rom. I put in *.doc to search. It finds my files but it also searches the C: drive

I've checked all the settings but everytime I search my cd rom it also searches the c drive. I tried a few other pc's....same result.

Any ideas?

I just put WOW in caps because I can see the work I have ahead of me is going to be big time - time consuming. I put this under software because I do think this question applies to that, although I know I'm going to be posting questions under Windows 7 in the future - & probably lots of them.

Maybe a few of u might recognize me. I'm the guy who mentioned that I would soon be using a much newer computer than I had been. The older one still had Windows XP Pro as the OS (which I'm sure u folks know wasn't being supported by Microsoft anymore for over a year).

The computer itself was also old, although I was told it was a good computer in its day (whenever I mention computer I'm referring to a desktop).

And as a reminder, I'm still a computer novice compared to you folks, I'm sure light years behind many/most of you.

Well, the change has been made. Someone brought the much newer computer over & switched the old one to the new one (I think the new one is about 3 years old & I'm not sure if it has ever even been used before.)

I believe that the files that were transferred from the old to the new were done with a tool I saw called something like "File Transfer Tool" & I saw it had a trademarked name called "The Tornado, or just Tornado" which obviously was the companies way of saying their product was fast at this.

I did not know the person who did the change-over, but they basically just changed it as... Read more

I'm trying to search within log files (text files with *.log extention).

With XP this works easily with a check box. But Windows 7?
Searching in a directory doesn't find content of the files.
Sometimes there is a button under the results called (something like) "Search Content" (got other language).
But even with this nothing happens.

Is there a easy way searching in text files (with other extentions) in windows 7?

A:Searching within files

Here are all the steps I think you need to follow to actually search:
1. Make sure that Windows 7 is actually going to search files with your extension, and it appears that using this list properly is important *whether or not you are looking in an indexed location*!!
a. Hit the start button and type "search" in the search box.
b. Select "Change How Windows Searches"
c. Hit "Advanced"
d. Select the "File Types" tab.
e. Make sure the file extension for the files you want to search in is on the list *and* is set to "Index Properties and File Contents". I know this appears to be for file indexing, but it does seem to make a difference on whether you find the file in non-indexed locations as well.
f. Say "Ok" and exit all the dialog boxes

2. Actually perform your search on the folder in question. Depending on some other settings you may have to type "content: spam" to find "spam" *in* the files instead of files with the word "spam" in the name. Alternately, if you press the "Alt" key when you're exploring in the folder, you can choose "Tools / Folder Options" go to the "Search" tab and select "Always search file names and contents".

For example, wen I seach in google

i type C, and a list of keywords with letter C appear and these keywords that i've used to search before

i just wonder if other user account on my computer can see the same keywords or he/she only can see his/her own keywords that he/she has used, because there are 2 users on my computer

A:A question about searching bar

It depends on your operating system. If you are using Windows XP or Windows 2000 and you have separate logins, you won't be able to see each others previously used keywords that you have searched for.

So, for example, if you searched for porn, the other user won't know unless you both use the same login/user account.

Hi, when I search for anything on Google, Yahoo or Bing, I am being redirected to random websites when clicking on any links from the search results. My antivirus software apparently did not catch this and I've tried several malware and spyware removal tools to no avail. It's been happening for the past 2 1/2 weeks and has been very frustrating to copy-n-paste URLs by right clicking on the links and pasting in the address bar to access the real sites. Please help!

Hi

My Windows 7 search is extremely slow. e.g. If I click on the Start button and start typing the name of a spreadsheet file, it takes about 16 seconds before the name of any spreadsheet files to appear.

Worse if you try again a few seconds later, it STILL takes just as long - so presumably nothing is cached.

So:

A) How can I improve my search results speed?

B) Can anyone recommend dirt cheap, light, fast alternative?

I tried "Everything" search from VoitTools.com, which is brilliantly fast has a nasty habit of crashing (particularly on my Win8 laptop). It only indexes file and folder names, but if you name things intelligently for much of the time that will do. And then you have a nice list of stuff that match your search which you can sort in a different order, or right-click

Btw, I do NOT want to search file CONTENT - just filenames and do so super-fast!
For file content I use X1 Search which is fairly expensive but does a pretty good job, once it has opened (another 14 seconds or so) and once it has built its index (may take several hours).

Fwiw, I keep most of my documents in a folder in C:\ and this is about 3GB.
Plus I use DropBox which is about 5GB.

Any thoughts?

J
P.S. Here is a review of Everything search. Unfortunately like is says development does appear to have stalled on Everything.

and
download hijackthis, get the updates before you run it. make a directory in your C drive for hijack this and unzip to that directory, scan and save the log. cut paste the log in your next post.

Wow, this seems to be an epidemic! I use XP SP3, IE8 and FF3. Google and Yahoo searches are very slow, perhaps a full minute, and most often don't go to the correct site. Spybot, Defender and Symantec Corporate AV find nothing. Thanks so much for your help. Dave.

I am running XP at home and it is no longer on the internet. When I no longer had the internet I ran all the tools, HiJackThis, Spybot and.....hmmm....I don't remember the third as of this moment, but it is the one you guys always recommend as well.

ANYWAY, whenever I go to FILE, SEARCH, and I look for anything on my hard drive, I get a window that pops up says that there is a problem connecting to the internet. I called my Tech support and they said XP always checks the internet when you search....I know that is wrong, or else why do they give you that option as well if you search for something? It asks you where you want to search and if I don't say internet, it shouldn't check the internet.

Any ideas? Thanks!

A:Searching error.....

Well, you are right, it shouldn't be trying to access the Internet if you don't tell it to.

You said you ran HijackThis... care to post your results so we can check and make sure there isn't something odd in there?
