Hello,

My laptop's screen goes black when I connect it to the TV via a HDMI cable, however this is completely new as it used to work fine. I can still watch things on my TV but I have to look at the TV screen where text comes up quite small and it makes it hard to do stuff, so I was wondering if anyone would know why my laptop's decided to start doing this, and how I can get it back to both screens working at once? The volume and everything else works ok, it's just a bit annoying is all!

I have Windows Vista Home Edition, not sure of the details, but I got it just when Vista first came out.

Thanks!

Hey guys.. so I connected my other SA350 monitor from my other broken computer to my main one, and it shows a black screen. They're the same monitors, and the power to both are on. I'm on Extended, the other monitor's input is HDMI and the output port on the computer is DVI (Amazon Basics). Main monitor is VGA to VGA. What should I do? Updated system specs for your convenience.

A:Second monitor connected by HDMI to DVI shows black screen

Solved. Sorry, it seems the monitor is just Pfftt. It's dead, and it's going to the Samsung Service Center ASAP.

Hello,
I have a Sony Vaio T-series laptop (model SVT13126CXS) running windows 7. As of yesterday the screen is black...it doesn't display anything.
Laptop powers on (lights are on, fan makes noise, etc.).
I was able to plug an HDMI cable from my laptop to my TV and I am able to use the laptop using my TV screen (laptop screen is still black, but displays on TV works).
And the odd twist... this is a touch screen laptop, so I am able to touch my laptop screen and it makes clicks and moves cursor on my TV. (for some reason, the track pad doesn't work while its on TV display though).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you can give me steps into diagnosing the problem, that'd be great!
I live in a small college town and there is only one computer repair shop and since it's a monopoly he rips people off. Charges $95 for a diagnostic (if you get it fixed, it goes towards the repair; if not, it's $95). Charged my friend $120 for macbook charger and it wasn't even an genuine Apple product!

Hello all,
I am using a dell studio xps 1645 with ati mobility radeon HD5730 inbuilt.

Problem i have been facing past few weeks is that my laptop screen is going black and is crashing a few minutes after booting up when i connect to ac power.

I did a few diagnostic tests. It is working perfectly in safe mode. It is working perfectly when i disable my graphic adapter and boot in normal mode. The tricky part is that it works perfectly with graphic card enabled when im using with battery. As soon as i connect AC power it crashes with black screen in a few minutes/seconds. I also uninstalled and reinstalled the graphic drivers and BIOS is also up to date

I recently updated my graphic card drivers but still it worked well for a few days. I could play games with no problem at all.
I used to have a heating problem aswell. The screen would lag and audio would distort. I have cleaned my heat sink now but cannot test it out as my laptop crashes. Also my battery is pretty old now and gives only 30 min backup.

Any help would be much appreciated

Can you try another AC adapter there? Does it behave the same?

Hi, (I use Windows 7 and Window+P doesn't work)

Sillilly, as I often do things, I have bought a Dell U2410 monitor to rig up with my HP laptop to use as an Extended Monitor. I hooked them up and no problems ensued. The default 'Duplicate Screen' option came into play and I had the same screen showing on each monitor. So, I changed to 'Extension' setting and the Dell went blank.

This is where it gets silly. I (for some reason) clicked on 'Show Monitor 2 only' (The Dell monitor) and after that, both screens went black. I unplugged the HDMI lead connecting them, and the laptop screen came back as it would. Now however, every time that I plug the HDMI cable to connect the 2, both screens stay black.

My question is; can I change the default setting to 'Duplicate Screen' BEFORE plugging in the HDMI?

OR... Can I simply delete the Dell monitor (driver?) from my laptop so that it forgets my choice and resets to the default Duplicate Screens setting on it's own?

The problem is that when both screens are blacked out, that I cannot change anything as I can't see anything!!!

Thank you for your awesomeness and replies.

Kind regards,

Me!

P.S. Windows + P doesn't work. If I unplug the HDMI from the laptop, I can use Window+P. But it doesn't matter what mode I choose before reconnecting, both screens still go blank. If I try Window+P when they are connected, nothing happens.

A:Black Screen on Dell U2410Extended Monitor when connected to HP Laptop

194 views, and nothing!! For anybody who may come across the same problem, I figured it out. Plug in a VGA at the same time as the HDMI is connected and change the settings. Quite easy really. Though I did lose several hours before figuring that out... I hope I save you guys some time. Also, the screen didn't show up because the HDMI port on the laptop is faulty. Test that too if you are having problems. It can be repaired at any computer repair shop by re-soldering. Thanks forum for your immeasurable help!

I am using a Toshiba Qosmio 64x. I know the monitor works. The computer recognizes it, but I cannot get anything to display on the monitor.

I started it up today with the monitor plugged in, and the monitor displayed as my main display, but when I switched to "extend these displays", it worked briefly, then went blank. I have restarted several times trying all different settings and cannot get. it to work. Again, the computer recognizes it, but the monitor screen is black.

Hi,
I have a Latitude E6440 with an Intel HD Graphics 4600 video card and I have noticed that when the power cord is connected the monitor connected with HDMI goes black and back again randomly. This usually happens several times per minute.
I have both tried with another HDMI cable and monitor but with the same result.
This never happens when the laptop is running on batteries.

I have 2 users 2 laptops both windows 7 Prof 64 bit - connecting to a Windows 2008 Server via Terminal Server, mainly one laptop gets an occasional black screen, when minimizing the session, working on the laptop and then goes back to the session it sometimes takes 30 sec to 2 min and then the user is back connected to the server like nothing happens, the other laptop has an occasional a black screen but not as much and does the same all day, minimizing working on the desktop going back to the remote session etc.
I had Dell Support look at all the settings on the server and everything looks fine.

The connection is not disconnected when it comes back up.

Any ideas what could cause this issue ?

I have an Elitebook 8530p that I am trying to connect to my TV so I can view online TV on my TV screen. I can stream the online TV and watch it on the laptop ok, and I can connect the laptop to the TV with HDMI cord and I see the picture on the TV too, but as soon as I push the play button and it starts to stream the Laptop freezes. This happens on both TV's in our house with different HDMI cords which leads me to believe it is an issue with the laptop (not the TV's or cords). I have tried pushing the Fn + F4 buttons to clone it but that makes no difference. I have tried changing the display settings but I don't really know what I am doing! Another post said to choose full HDMI setting but even though the laptop has a HMDI port it didn't appear to have that setting. Is it too old?

A:Laptop freezes when connected to TV through HDMI

The problem is most likely the video card driver, so yes technically your laptop is too old, but luckily you can save that geezer! If updating the drivers doesn't work then you can try changing resolutions.

Solution found here:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...o/7fafd27d-816f-456c-afa6-3c7fec3909e3?auth=1
a. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

b. Click System and Maintenance, click System, and then click Device Manager.
Note If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-click System, and then click Device Manager.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

c. In Device Manager, expand Display Adapters, right-click the display devices, and then click properties and under the driver tab click on Uninstall.

d. When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click OK.

e. Restart the computer.

After the computer restarts, the drivers will be automatically installed. Check after this procedure. Also check if you have any exclamation mark or cross marks alongside the display devices listed in device manager.
You can update the drivers using windows update. Refer to the below mentioned link and use the steps provided accordingly -http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Update-a-driver-for-hardware-that-isnt-working-properly

You may also check if there are any updates for the drivers at the manufacturer website. You may even install the latest drivers from the manufacturer... Read more

When I unplug the laptop to skype and then plug it back into the tv when I am done I get a, "NO RGB signal" message from the tv. I don't know why it is doing this, I have been able to use system restore to get it working again, but it is no longer working. Any ideas?

Try this:

Hold down the input button on the right side of the Tv. This is the bottom button
With the tv off, press and hold the bottom button (input)

When the TV powers up and you see the input menu, release and press the button
to change the mode to your preference.

Recently my hard drive went out and I had it replaced with a solid state drive. The problem I'm having now is when I hook up my Samsung Smart TV through an HDMI cable (also tried a new cable with same results) I get wavy, scrolling lines on my laptop that go away when I disconnect the cable. The lines don't show up on my TV and this didn't happen before having my computer repaired.

The Staples tech wants to charge me again for diagnosing it after paying over $270 for a diagnostics and replacement of the hard drive. He said it's not possible for it to be a problem with the new hard drive so it would be another charge even though it didn't do it before having it repaired and my computer reformatted. I'm concerned I'm going to burn something out if I keep using it this way but I also don't want to pay more if it's something simple. He said it could be the motherboard or graphics card but I'm not sure whether or not to trust him. I'm a senior with little technical knowledge.

I want to use an HDMI cable so I can watch Xfinity programming that's available online only. I can live with it doing this as long as it isn't hurting my computer. Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

I have connected my HP Laptop with Windows 8 to my TV through an HDMI port. I watch netflix and youtube. A couple times a day the sound will just quit working. I check the audio and it says it is still hooked up to the TV. The only way I can figure out how to get it working again is to restart the computer. This has never happened while audio was playing, just when it is not in use for a little while.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey guys, I'm actually new here, so I am not sure if this is in the right forum page, but I need help. I have had a problem with my HDTV and laptop for a few months and finally decided to start a thread for help. The problem is that the HDTV is blurry and fuzzy when connected to my laptop via HDMI. However, I realize this is an overscanning issue, because in the AMD Catalyst Control Center, whenever I set the scaling for overscanning to 0%, the fuzzy text and screen is fixed, but the edges around the screen like the taskbar are cutoff the edge of the screen. I do not think my TV has an option for "Just Scan", but maybe you guys can find something I can't. Here is the manual:

Also, I am running Windows 8.1 with an AMD Radeon HD 7520G graphics card.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Hi, new here. After searching for information on my problem I could not find a single thread with the same issue.
Having said that, here goes.

I just bought a new TV and attempted to connect it to my laptop via HDMI. I have used both the laptop and the cable with other TV's in the past with no problem but when I connect the two the laptop powers off as if the power has been cut. It will not boot when the two are connected and only happens when the TV is on. The laptop will boot into safe mode but it seems that HDMI out is disabled in safe mode so I cannot test it. I have checked and my graphics drivers are current. Hope someone can help! Thanks.

More Information: I have since exchanged for a different TV (Different Brand) for an unrelated issue and it doesn't work with this one either, same issue.

I messed up display settings for when I attach a TV via HDMI to my laptop. I set the system to display only on the TV (OK, not a totally stupid idea) and then picked a resolution the TV doesn't support (that was TOTALLY stupid!) When I disconnect the TV, laptop display works as normal. As soon as I connect the TV, laptop screen blanks and TV goes to Invalid Format. I have tried to change display settings through the control panel with the TV disconnected, but as soon as I plug in the TV, it goes back to the bad resolution on the TV and no laptop display.

Is this stored in the registry somewhere? I want to reset the flag telling the system to display only on 2nd display.

Please help

A:Invalid Format when laptop connected to HDMI TV

Hi OldWraith, welcome to the Seven Forums.

This should work:Connect the TV, don't mind the Invalid Format warning
Press WIN + P to open Display Switch dialog. You don't see it as it's on the non-working TV display but trust me, it's there:
(Screenshot from our tutorial Display - Change Main Display)
Press Right Arrow > Press Enter to change from Display 2 only to Display 1 only
Now you should have the desktop on laptop's display, you can change your display settings as you wish

I have a brand new MSI Media Live box. The Installation process went fine except when it came to startup after installation. I always receive a blue screen and sometime I have the "irql_not_less_or_equal" message. The system works perfectly when I startup using the VGA connector. I have verified that HDMI does work if I startup using the VGA connector and then extend the desktop.

I have downloaded and install the Windows 7 driver from Nvidia. My card is Geforce 6150. The error descriped above happened using my Philips Tv and also my computer LCD screen.

Any Ideas?

Problem started a little over a month ago on my HP laptop running Windows 7 64bit.

When I connect the laptop to my either of my TVs through an hdmi cord everything works fine. Videos run smoothly and the audio is in sync as if there's no problem.

If I try to watch a video on just the laptop though the problems start. If I try to play anything (songs/videos) in Windows Media Player then it says "Windows media player encountered a problem while playing this file".

When I play a video on YouTube the video runs smoothly but there isn't any audio to go with it.

If I go to control panel - sound - speakers and headphone properties and try to play a test sound it says 'failed to play test tone'

Attempted to update the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC driver but windows said it was up to date. Same thing with the Intel(R) Display Audio driver.

Thanks for any help

A:hp laptop audio and video problems (unless connected through hdmi)

Are you leaving the HDMI cable connected to the PC when you try to us the PC's sound (IDT)? Generally, when an HDMI cable is plugged in and detected the sound automatically switches from the "Speakers" (the IDT) to HDMI as the default audio playback device and thus no regular PC sound.

Hi,

I've recently purchased a Samsung T23A750 monitor and to my disappointment when I try to watch a movie the built in speakers are not functioning. I have a Sony Vaio Z216GX connected via HDMI to the monitor (HDMI-DVI) port. I can definitely see the video, but no audio is playing from the speakers. The built in speakers are not at fault- I did a self-diagnosis of the monitor and the speakers seem to work fine. I also set the monitor as the default for the audio and even when Win 7 says its functioning properly, the speakers still don't work. Conversely, setting the default to my PC speakers work fine. I'm sure its not the HDMI cable- I used the same one to hook my pc to my tv with everything working fine. Any ideas??

Okay, so over the holidays I received a brand new Hisense television and I was watching movies and tv shows on my laptop on the big screen through an HDMI cable for a few weeks. Before that I was doing the same thing with the big screen in our living room for months. I got up one day and wanted to plug it in but I kept getting a message saying no signal. I had had it plugged in the night before and it worked just fine. Yes, I checked to make sure it was on the right setting, HDMI 1. I also tried plugging it in the other HDMI slots on the tv and it didn't work in those either. It is doing the same thing to our tv in the living room and it just doesn't make any sense. The only thing I can think of is that my computer has some kind of driver that just needs to be updated or something but I have no idea which one. HELP PLEASE!

The problem is that when I connect the two, the laptop screen goed black and the TV says 'No signal.' Pressing the FN F4 does not work. Also I'm not able to get back into vista on the laptop. The screen stays black even after unplugging the HDMI cable. I have to hold the power button to switch the laptop off. Not a good thing.

Any tips or advice?

Hi, I just got my Thinkpad P70 4k with Nvidia Quadro M3000M graphics this week, running Windows 10 Pro.I have run into a lot of issues regarding HDMI output - switching to discrete graphics disables the HDMI output and i can no longer change the resolution or scaling (nor does the Nvidia Control Panel show up). In mixed graphics mode the HDMI output works, and i can change the resolution  but after waking from sleep the image only shows on the external (HD display) connected over HDMI.I have to disconnect the HDMI cable to get video on the laptop screen and the reconnect it to get video on both screens.I suspect that the Intel Graphics runs the Laptop Screen in mixed graphics mode, in the Nvidia Control Panel I can only control the external display.    I am running the latest BIOS (2.03) and updated the Nvidia Drivers directly from NVIDIA (10.18.13.6256).  On another note I also had a black screen issue after updating the BIOS to 2.03 (no idea what version came installed) everytime i rebooted and had to disconnect the Bios Battery twice, but that somehow (??) got resolved after taking out a SD card from the Card Reader.

Asus P5Q-Pro (BIOS v. 1613), Intel E8400/3Ghz, 8 GB OCZ PC-6400 DDR-2, Sapphire ULTIMATE HD4670 (512 GDDR-3) w. Catalyst 12.2, Windows 7 Home Premium (dual boot w. XP-SP3 on separate HD's). RAID-enabled system w. 1 GB RAID-1 storage attached.

A:HDMI on HD4670/Win7-64 = Black Screen on Start-Up! (works on XP-SP3?)

Had exactly the same problem.

I did two things to fix; First I lowered the resolution to 1280x1024 and it worked, but that drove me crazy, so I bought a Intel card with 1gb of video memory, which I'm told is the minimum one should use if one wishes to use HDMI HD 1920x1080. It probably would have worked fine with an ATI as well, but with at least 1gb of RAM.

The card I bought was a Gigabyte GTX 450 and I might have been able to go lower, but since it was only $90 I figured it was worth it.

If you have a card with 1gb perhaps you could give that a try, or try lowering the resolution and (maybe), color depth.

The machine in question was Windows Server 2008 R2, but hey, it's essentially the same as windows 7.

Just my 2 cents worth.

The problem started as a HDMI-cable was plugged into my running Satellite T130-17E and the screen was closed down. From that point the notebook screen stopped working. When booting the windows start-up logo is on for a couple of seconds and just before the entering the desktop the cursor is visible on the screen. But except from these short moments there is no action on the notebooks screen. When I reinstalled the driver to the graphic card there was some short moments (less than 0,5 sec) when the screen was active.

I can use the notebook without any problems via HDMI to my TV. And when I adjust the screens brightness (FN+F6/F7) the black screen can get more back-lighted.

When I turn off the HDMI-output or plugs it out - nothing happens on the notebooks screen.

Can some of you please try to help me out as I really need my notebook to work normal again. If you can help me sort out this problem I'll be very grateful-

Kind Regards,
Jacob Lindberg

Start your notebook with HDMI cable and wait until windows is fully loaded. When you see the desktop on the TV use FN+F5 key combination and switch to the LCD back.

Can you do this?

Hi,

I am new to this forum and I am having some trouble with my laptop. My laptop screen was cracked, and my future brother in law removed the screen completely, and then connected an external monitor. Everything was working fine until he performed a full system restore because of a corrupted file. Now the screen goes black on start up. In safe mode a pop up states that the installation cannot be completed in safe mode and automatically restarts, putting me back at square one. Is this issue fixable or should I just throw it away?

I have an acer laptop/now desktop running Windows Vista Home Premium if it helps.

A:External monitor connected to laptop goes black after system restore

I don't have much time but this will help others. When does the display go black? After the standard BIOS post information when it goes to Windows? When do you get the error message?

I assume this may be a refresh rate problem but there's not enough info to go on.

Hi
i have an acer aspire 5738zg with radeon hd5400 series, 6 gigas of ram, windows 7.
today when i turned on my laptop everything was working as usual then all of a sudden after a few minutes
the whole screen got covered in some zigzag lines yellow then pink and after that the screen went black.

i forced shutdown my laptop , tried to restart but the screen wouldn't turn on.
i tried unplugging the laptop , removing the battery and pressing the turn on button for 30 seconds. also tried removing 1 stick of ram then the other but it didn't work.

then i tried to plug my laptop to an external screen via hdmi. but it didn't work either, i know the laptop is on i can hear the sound and the hard drive light works.

what could be the problem ?
i don't understand why the hdmi is not working either, yesterday i plugged my laptop to the tv to watch anime and was just fine.

any help would be appreciated

thanks

I've seen an NVIDIA laptop use a "Resize Screen" program that works majestically. Unfortunately, I do not have a laptop with an NVIDIA graphics card (It's a Radeon, I think...in a Sony VIAO). Is there a program out there that will resize a screen to fit the TV? As you might have already guessed, when I use an HDMI cable from Laptop to HDTV, the screen just doesn't fit properly! Annoying...

Hey folks!

Recently purchased a new laptop - http://www.samsung.com/hk_en/consumer/computer-peripherals/notebook/series-3/NP300E5C-S02HK (However I'm on Windows 7)

I went about trying to plug it into my television (Toshiba 40BV701B) via an HDMI cable and had the notorious problem of not being able to find the right screen resolution. I went into display settings and started mucking around to find the right one. However, I must've selected a resolution setting that was too bizarre or something (think I went really high) because the image didn't show up on the TV (nor on the laptop as I had set the laptop screen to switch off when plugged into the TV) and after a few seconds of nothing my laptop made its 'something has been removed/unplugged' sound and the screen flicked back on. A few seconds more and it would make the sound of 'something has been plugged in' before switching its screen off and seemingly trying to connect to the TV again. This would repeat for as long as the HDMI cable was connected.

I get the feeling that I could sort the problem by changing the res for when the laptop is plugged into the TV, but the only way I know how to do that is when the laptop is plugged into my TV and there is no longer any screen working when this happens! I probably should have done a system restart at the time, but think I have left it far too long now.

Any help would be much appreciated,
Cheers!

A:Changed screen res for HDMI connection. Screwed up my laptop!

When you change resolution Windows gives a few seconds of the new resolution and a dialog box comes up asking if you are happy with the new settings. This could account for the sounds you heard a few seconds after plugging into the TV.

Have you tried changing the settings for extended display and leaving the laptop screen on. This will make it much easier to change around the resolution settings.

Hello,
We recently purchased a Dell laptop and later found that we cannot transfer what is seen on the laptop screen to the TV using an HDMI cable (the cable works fine, as shown when used with my other laptop). What happens, though, is that we hear a noise on the laptop when both ends of the HDMI cable are plugged in, but the TV screen remains black.
What could be the problem?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

I was moving our Dell Studio 17 laptop and the screen went blank. I thought it did a power save or something. But I could not get it redisplay anything..no flickers, nothing.

I rebooted, nothing.

I opened up the back and reseated the ram and verified the hard drives were secure. I vacuumed out any dust. No difference.

So I tried using the HDMI with our TV and it displays just fine. I try to toggle the screen (function F8 on my laptop) and it makes no difference. HDMI is always shown.

In the past when we use the HDMI to display netflix movies on our TV, I hookup the HDMI and the laptop automatically switches to the HDMI display and turns off the laptop display. When I unplug the HDMI, it wouldnt turn the laptop screen back on. I would have to reboot with the HDMI disconnected for the display to come back.

Now rebooting doesnt not bring the screen back.

Anything else to try? are there settings somewhere forcing the laptop to not send info to its own screen? BIOS?

This laptop has an ATI card and uses the latest drivers. It does have the Catalyst control center where it detects the displays. It seems the 'unknown' laptop screen and TV (when HDMI is connected, the only way I can see the screen at this time)..but it calls them duplicates and calls both of them #1 display.

Thanks for the help

Hello and thanks for reading,

I have a 2 year old HP pavilion dv6 series laptop running windows 7. Yesterday I turned it on and it started normally but when I tried to browse on Firefox it gave me the blue screen (for the first time ever) and it shut down. Fearing I had a virus I ran it in safe mode and started a scan and began transporting my pictures via Dropbox just in case it died on me. Sure enough a weird error message (couldnt figure out what program made the message pop up) popped up saying I had a bunch of urgent viruses.. I didn't click on it at all and before I couldn't think of what to do the blue screen popped up and it shut down. When I tried to restart it the HP splash sign popped up and the screen flickered black and a blinking cursor started in the upper left corner. So this is where I stand now... Black screen with blinking cursor. Set default setting in BIOS (didn't work) and F8 (safe mode) or F11 (system restore) does nothing... The black screen just stays there. Any ideas? Is it a gonner? I'm hoping to get back on and get my pictures if possible. Help please!

I recently did a factory restore on my laptop since it was giving me really bad problems before(BSOD on boot, unable to start in safe mode, etc). I assumed that it was caused by a bad video driver installation. Once I did my factory restore, this problem was solved, but it seems like a new one arose.

In the first few days the laptop was working fine, but I recently realised that if I unplug my AC Adapter, my laptop would work for awhile but will eventually die. The screen would just go black, then I would see weird colors and then it would go black again and I would be forced to hold the power button and restart. The funny thing is, this never happens when I have it plugged in.

I then realised that it happened when I plugged it out and moved it around, so I assumed it had something to do with the wiring inside my laptop. But it seems that isn't the case since even if I move it around while it's plugged in, it doesn't happen. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with my power supply at this point, but I'm not really sure.

If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it!

EDIT: It just happened to me as I tried to access my task manager. I did CTLR+ALT+DEL and my screen went black, and my laptop simply restarted itself.

A:Laptop screen failure; random colors followed by black screen

EDIT: It seems it has gotten way worse. It happened while it was plugged in, and not only that, but when I tried to turn on my laptop again, the screen remained black and I heard these beeping noises. (6 beeps in succession, over and over) Sometimes I turned it on and it didn't even beep. I managed to actually get my laptop to boot, but I'm afraid it will happen again.

Hi all,
I connected an external screen for testing a presentation (just a second monitor), and ticked presenter view, clicked extend desktop and then it correctly identified the monitors., but the resolution on the external was low. So I turned it up, and fiddled around a little, then suddenly my laptop screen went blank (probably after I clicked yes to something) amd only the external monitor now shows anything. In display settings it now suddenly has two of my external monitors, and not my laptop one listed...

Identifying them shows nothing on my laptop, and the screen being "1"

I really need it back to my laptop screen, as it's hard to do stuff when the laptop is 1m away from the screen! I'm writing this post like it...

So please help!

Edit: Oh and by the way, unplugging the screen gives No Signal, and nothing to the laptop

Edit 2: Somehow I made both monitors appear in the list again, but still only the external will display anything. If I choose my laptop screen and click extend to this, it asks me to keep changes, I say yes, then it greys out again
Thanks,
Nappymonster

Both my Desktop and Laptop have HDMI input. I also have the HDMI cord on hand right now I just don't know how I'd go about setting it up. I'd like to use synergy to control the desktop AND have it's output be on the laptop until my power supply arrives and I can fix my TV.

the VGA doesn't transfer data signals through digital technology, it uses analog, that's why the picture appears correct on the VGA, the HDMi though uses a technology called HDCP handshaking, the PC needs to handshake the display for it to show the images being encrypted from the desktop, if that handshake doesn't take place then the image will appear scrambled.

you can read up about HDCP here High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia but your options are just to use the VGA cable, or if it is a software fault then ... Read more

Hello everyone!

First of all i would like to thank everyone for the answers and help you share and i am new to this forum. I tried to search before making this thread but i havent found any answer that could help me.

I just bought 2 LCD monitors ( Acer and Asus) they all work perfectly But i have a problem, a huge one. The Asus monitor refuses to work when the VGA (acer) is connected and vice versa.

The Asus is a 23" LCD monitor, its connected via HDMI.
The Acer is a 18,5" LCD monitor, its connected via VGA.
My laptop is an Acer 7736, 2,20 GHZ, 4 GB RAM, 1GB graphic card from ATI Radeon.
So i beg you please to help me, i have tried everything possible, been trying for the last 7 hours and i even downloaded Ultramon but it doenst work either.

I only want them to work in same time, what can i do?

Here is the link, i even tried updating the drivers on the graphic card but nothing works.
Thanks in advance!!!

A:HDMI trouble when VGA connected

A lot of laptops do not have the ability to go to more than two monitors (Edit: this is including laptop as monitor). You can probably have both work if you close your laptop lid, otherwise, only the laptop and VGA or laptop and HDMI will work. (Edit: if you close laptop lid, the two monitors VGA and HDMI will work but only with laptop monitor closed)

I think there is a piece of hardware you can purchase that can turn a USB port into and external display adapter, but I don't know if it was GFX card specific or if your card needs or supports a particular piece.

My laptop suffers from this as well. I tried it and confirmed it after seeing issue on this forum a few weeks ago.

You need to adjust the graphics settings for the correct resolution for the TV.

So I was using an external hard drive to transfer some files from my desktop to my laptop. I was transferring files to the external hard drive when it had some sort of error; can't remember specifically what it was. I decided to plug in a laptop charger into the external driver, then plugged the usb back into the drive. I suddenly heard the external hard drive working like crazy, then there was this smell that smelled like paint coming from the external hard drive. Holy crap, did I just fry it? I didn't notice the smell at first. I also can't say that the smell was too foul... Anyway, my computer said that the external hard drive was installed, but I can't seem to find it on My Computer. So I thought, whatever, I have most of the files I needed anyway. I unplugged the usb from the drive and plugged it into the drive on the laptop. Then holy crap, the laptop fan went off like mad, almost 10 times faster then it was going at the moment. The laptop screen went green, then the entire thing turned off. By then I found out that it was a bad idea to plug a laptop charger into an external hard drive, then into a laptop. What the hell was I thinking?
I turned the laptop back on. Okay, the power supply and motherboard is working. The lights turn on when I press the power button, some other light turns on whenever I plugged in a charger for the laptop. Everything seems to be functioning, except that the laptop screen is black and there's nothing I can do to make... Read more

Which drivers have you updated lately? Have you done a BIOS upgrade? What software have you installed lately? Has your hard drive failed? Have you run a Memtest to insure your RAM is not loose or failing. These are few of the things that can cause this problem. Have you plugged in to a external monitor What happens if you do?

Hello,

I have a Sony VGN-NS10L with Windows Vista Home Premium with service pack 1, link below for all the specs:

http://vaio.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProd...=1218032875460

I have only had this laptop for 4 months now and it was fine until yesterday when I uninstalled Mcafee and Microsoft Office from my machine using add and remove programs. After the machine restarted it was going very very slow so I decided to copy all my documents to my external hard drive, during this process the machine froze and niether alt f4 or ctrl, alt, del would work. I literally had to wait for the battery to go dead as I couldnt remove the battery.

After the machine went dead I turned the laptop back on and after the Vaio logo it said the machine didnt shutdown correctly and would I like to start windows normally or launch start-up repair, I tried starting normally first but I get a blank black screen just after the windows loading screen. I held down the power button to restart the machine and this time tried the launch start up repair option. The start-up repair comes up "Windows Loading" with a percentage bar but then promptly gives me a blank black screen.

I have pressed the power button countless times to restart the machine, I can manage to get to the bios if that helps anything, I have also pressed f8 on the machine and tried starting it in safe mode, as well as the last know good configuration but that crashes like the other options did.

I turned the laptop on this morning to... Read more

Hey everyone. I'm hoping you can help me with this problem.

I have an Asus K55V laptop with Win7 installed. I normally use an external monitor plugged in while i play games. Apparently there's 2 graphic cards in the laptop, an Intel HD4000 and a Nvidia GT630M. I don't know if this is possible, but I tried disabling the Inten HD4000 in device manager so the laptop would use the Nvidia card only. This gave me a problem, and now my laptop screen is totally dead, even after restarting the system several times. This happens with and without the external monitor.

Anyone who can help me?

I have a Compaq M2000 laptop using Windows XP Home, updated with all the updates, about 4 years old. I have a newer one, but I use this one quite a bit so I don't have to lug the bigger one around the house. I bought new memory, put it in and got a black screen. I took it out, put the old memory in and it worked for a few days. I was using it last night and got a black screen. I could faintly see the page I was on, I shut it off and could power up and only saw the black screen.

I hooked it up to a monitor, it starts to work, I get the Windows XP logo, then the monitor goes black.

Any ideas what to do? I would think the old memory is in okay, because it worked for a few days.

Thanks!

Nancy

A:Laptop with black screen

I just hit Function and F4 and was able to get the monitor to work. It works with the monitor plugged in. When I went to graphics properties, it shows the monitor as the primary, I changed it to the laptop and the laptop is still black. Evidently I have a problem with whatever controls the laptop screen. Not sure I want to invest much money in this, might just look for an everyday laptop to leave upstairs so I don't have to carry my work laptop up and down the steps.

My Toshiba Satellite laptop screen goes black after loading windows. During the bootup process my screen works fine, but once it is loaded it goes completely black. Anyone have a solution for this? Thanks for any assistance you can give me.

A:Laptop Screen goes black

There are several possibilities for this but a little more info and a quick test first..
First it would be useful to know the model number of the Toshiba and the make of the graphics card.
Second, have you tried it in SAFE mode and does it work (I think it will).
Next, do you have a spare monitor that you can plug into the back? If so, does that work under normal Windows?
Have you updated any of the drivers recently - and that includes Video drivers both separately and as an updated driver with Microsoft updates??

There are other posts about black laptop screens, but this is my situation.

My son mistakenly plugged in a base speaker unit into the VGA port on the laptop. Since that time, my screen is black. I cannot even attach an external monitor and have it work properly.

I have tried, per previous posts, to take all devices off and hold power button with no battery for 30-60 seconds. When I go back to restart the computer, the screen will try to light up, but for an instant it is like a bulb goes on/off real fast. This happens after the power button has been held down.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hello everyone! I always find this site useful so I wanted to post this question before I head out and purchase a new laptop today.

I purchased an HP g7-1167dx ( http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02880006 ) laptop 3 1/2 years ago. Paid $529.99 for it and have been EXTREMELY happy with it. Fast and did everything I wanted it to. I have always just closed the top and let it stay in sleep mode and would simply reopen it in the morning for another days use. I went to open it yesterday morning and I heard the fan & dvd drive "start up" like they always do, but then no image on the screen. I thought "well that has never happened". So my only option was to hold down the power button to reboot, which I did and the same thing happened.

After looking online I tried a "hard reset" or something along those lines that consisted of removing the battery, holding down the power button for 30-60 seconds, then plugging it in, booting up, then shutting down and then replacing the battery. That did not work. I swapped the memory module underneath the laptop, nothing either.

So after taking it to Best Buy Geek Squad, they removed the hard drive and tried a boot and still got nothing. He told me it is most likely the motherboard, which was an estimated $300 fix with parts and labor to send out for a fix. I decided to do some research and think about it. So my question is (sorry for taking so long to get to it) if the motherboard was fried would I still get ... Read more

Hi everyone!

I've run into problems with my HP Compaq 6715b laptop. I've been getting black screens at random times - never during startup / shutdown but just during normal use.
I've tried to see if it's a display problem by hooking up an external monitor etc. but there was no signal. Another symptom which makes me think that the monitor is not at fault is because the music I'm playing at the time of a black screen stops as well.
All I can do is switch it off then back on again - starts up ok though on the bright side!
If anyone knows what I can do to fix this just let me know!

Thanks!

I too have the same problem with my Dell Vostro 3400. It happened to me thrice.

The laptop screen just goes blank and nothing seems to work. The only option left is to Force ShutDown using the power button and start up again. And it does start up properly though at start up it gives the option of SafeMode booting.

I called the Dell guy and he said he would be replacing the Fan and heat sink. Will this really solve the problem???

Hello. I purchased a Compaq F572 Notebook with Vista about 3 weeks ago. All of a sudden now, when I turn on the laptop, the welcome screen appears and as soon as the taskbar starts to display, it goes to a black screen. The only way I can get my laptop desktop to show up is to connect a second monitor, with both monitors displaying the desktop. When I disconnect the second monitor and turn the laptop back on, the same thing happens - welcome screen and then black screen. My display settings are set for "mirrored" image. Please help!! Thank you!!!

Hi,

1. Have you tried plugging in an external monitor?
2. Do you get the Splash screen at start.......anything?
3. Can you get into the BIOS?
4. Can you boot into safe-mode?
5. Is the screen totally black or can you see anything faint at all/backlight etc?

Also, your laptop model may have a design flaw. And this maybe an answer:

Quote:
Open the screen to a wider angle before pushing the power button. If the angle of the screen to the keyboard is less than 90 degrees it appears to trigger the problem. By opening to wider than 90 degrees, the problem goes away. Once the screen is activated it doesn't matter what angle the screen is put at. The wide angle is only necessary at boot up.

Cheers

Hi, it's been a while!

I have a HP Pavillion dv7 laptop. I am using Vista. Recently, my laptop keeps getting a black screen when I am in the middle of doing something. I have to hold in the power button until it shuts off and turn my computer back on. I lose whatever I was working on. I have 139GB free of 287GB. I am not sure what is going on, but it is getting REALLY annoying, real fast!

Any input?

Thanks!!

My vista laptop has been acting unusual for the past week.
Normally after it has goes to sleep, I touch any key and it wakes up.
But now when I touch a key, it wakes up, but the screen stays black. :-(

I can shine a flashlight and see that the icons are vaguely present.
There is a function key to switch the display from external to internal
or both. When I select that key, I will get a regular display for about 3 seconds.
Then I select that key again and same response.
After about 5 or so of these, the screen is normal (until next sleep).
I tried restoring to Jan 13, before the updates and it still has
the problem. I also ran chkdsk and no help.

And when I connect an external monitor, the external monitor only shows my
wallpaper, it has no icons.

Any ideas what this is?

My uncle says his HP laptop screen suddenly went black. He says if he puts a flashlight on it he can see images. He took it to the store he bought it from and they told him it would cost $1200 to fix it. I was like that is a crock. He bought a new laptop instead. If he can see an image when using a flashlight there has to be a way to fix this issue. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

A:HP Laptop screen goes black

Maybe??

Make sure the lid close switch moves freely. The lid switch is a small button located close to the LCD screen. This button triggers the hibernation or sleep mode when the screen is closed. If the lid close switch is dirty, it might get stuck inside the laptop case and cut off the power from the inverter board. The inverter board works as a power supply for the backlight lamp and if there is no power coming to the inverter board, the backlight lamp will not light up either.

I am working on a dell inspiron 9400. The screen on the laptop is black with nothing at boot on through startup. It works fine with an external monitor. Everything I have read says this would be the screen itself, the invertor, or the cable to the motherboard. I have tried a new screen with the inverter installed as well as a new cable but nothing changes. Any help would be appreciated.

You could try a BIOS flash, if this doesn't work then it could be a fault with the motherboard... I've had similar to this with an Acer Aspire One netbook. Good luck

Also, I hear beeping noises by the battery area. I hear the fan for about a couple of min. or so then dead. HELP HELP HELP..I need my comp. School will be starting up soon. Can you hear the hard drive start up? Also if you look real close at the screen can you make out anything on the screen? The backlight may have burned out. Also was the computer running while it was charging? I'm guessing no as you said "you turned it on this morning."
