Laptop screen flickers and then turns black

Q: Laptop screen flickers and then turns black

Hello,
I am not sure if this is the right place to ask my question, but I have a HP Pavilion dv9610us Notebook, running Windows vista 32bit.
I was working in 3ds max 2011 yesterday, and then my screen began to flicker and go semi-black with horizontal/vertical white lines, and it kept going back and forth until the screen went black altogether.
I restarted it a few times, and most recently the screen appeared for a few seconds, and then it flickered again and kept going black, so I turned it off.
I am not very familiar with PC computers, so I am not sure what is the problem, but I am hoping that someone can understand my issue and give a solution to it! I have read around on various sites that say it may have to do with a backlight bulb issue or something along those lines, but I have no idea if that's what it is.
Also, I connected it to my tv, and the screen shows up on there... so I don't what that means, but hopefully it's not too complicated to fix.
Now, I am thinking it's the screen/display inverter, but I could be wrong. Is the problem that I need a new screen/display inverter, or is it something else?

Thanks in advance for any help!

There could be several reasons for your problem, but I am leaning toward your graphics driver, see if it works in safe mode.

Hello all,

This is my first post here, so please excuse me if I have created this thread in the wrong place. For quite some time (perhaps about two-three months) my screen has been flickering and turning black at random times. Sometimes my screen will be fine for a few days in a row, and then it might flicker for a few minutes and eventually just turn black. Usually what I do is turn it off and on a few times and eventually it returns normal. The thing is, I know it is still turned on because my music player will still operate, and it is a lighter shade of black, meaning I can still faintly see what was on my screen. Further, I initially thought it was an issue related to my charger being wrecked, but I have since replaced this and the problem persists. My guess is that it is some sort of virus, which I am basing on my quick reading of some other websites where others have reported similar problems. I'm really not a tech whiz, so does anyone have any suggestions?

Any input will be highly appreciated.

A:Screen flickers and turns black

I'm not very well versed in this area, but it does sound like a case of a faulty monitor since your programs run as per normal during those flickers.. You might wish to post more details on your specs and age of your hardware.
Have you tried replacing the monitor for testing?

whenever i play a game, approximately, 40 mins-1hr later, both horizontal and vertical purple lines show up on my screen. the game is still visible though. after about 5 mins of the purple lines, which get worse every minute, the screen flickers and turns black continuously. after approximately 2 mins of this, the screen turns black altogether. when i try alt+tab the screen stays black but i know it's worked because i hear the sound that the messages my friends have left me on msn

this has been happening for the past few days. one game does work, oblivion, and my friend gave me this on a disk. some other games which have the above problem are frozen throne, fable- the lost chapters and soldier front. frozen throne and warcraft 3 are iso files and i thought that that might've been the problem but soldier front is a free online game and it also has the problem.

could it be a problem with my graphics card? NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT. (Resolution 1024 by 768 by 32.)

any help will be really appreciated. THANKS in advance!!!!

A:Screen Flickers Then Turns Black(When Gaming)

Possibly a heat issue. Have you cleaned out the inside of your system recently?
Try installing something like Speedfan (free download, easy to find via Google) and have that running. Then you can monitor your CPU, GPU etc temperatures.

Also, ensure all your drivers are up to date.

No guarantees this is the problem but anything that is fairly quick, free and easy is worth a shot first of all.

I need Urgent help please. I have Windows Vista Home Premium x64 on a Gateway laptop. Whenever my recharger is plugged in to my laptop, and I try to use my laptop, the screen goes very dark (you can still sort of see, but its really dark to even work with the laptop). This happens about 5-10 seconds after I open my laptop's screen. In order to get rid of the darkness, I close the laptop's screen, reopen it, and 5-10 seconds later the screen goes black again. When I do not have my recharger plugged in, this problem won't happen. I also tried System Restore, which failed. However, when I go on Safe Mode, the problem does not occur even with the recharger plugged in. By closing the laptop screen, I mean taking the head (idk whats its called) and putting it down and picking the head back up. I really appreciate the help guys, I really need to get my laptop working again. For any other information about the laptop required, please ask. Thanks!

I've read around and tried the following:

Alt+F4

removing the battery with the power cord unplugged and holding the power down for 20-30 secs (reset BIOS?) then put the power cord back in and tried to turn it on.

Just turning it off and on a few times(I guess it could be stuck in sleed mode?)

I tried to light up the screen with a flashlight to see if the LED went out but screen was still black.

It's a toshiba satellite sli1

Thoughts on other things I can try?

If there is dried cat vomit near one of the top hinges, there's a small micro switch that senses that the top cover is closed. If this switch is damaged, it will give you the black LCD screen

My computer has always ran fine, other than a little problem with the video card overheating if I don't keep the cover off. Last weekend I took my computer to a friends house, upon my return, I plugged my computer back in, turned it on, a few hours later, the screen started flickering off and on and then my computer locked up. Ever since then, when I turn on my computer all the colors are messed up, the start menu bar turns red, the background screen turns green, and occasionally the entire screen becomes staticy.. The screen is also flickering as well, but I can still operate the computer while I can't see whats going on. I have no idea what this problem may be caused by, I read some of the older posts about it possible being the moniter, but ive used this same one for several years now. Any help would be appreciated!

The other day, my laptop decided not to boot. I turned it on in the morning as usual, and the screen turned black, after the Gateway logo appeared. The screen is still on, can tell by the back light. It just wont go past that to the windows password screen.

After 10 minutes or so, the windows checking for errors screen appears. It checks etc.. so I let it go, 14 hours later its still checking for system errors..

Whats your suggestions??

Laptop is Model NV53 running windows 7.

A:Screen turns black after Gateway logo on my laptop

If Check Disk is still running 14 hours later, then your HDD has too many bad sectors for it to fix. Let it finish, if it says there was an error, or it never finishes, then you will need to get a new HDD. You can test this theory by downloading the ISO image for Drive Fitness in my signature, burn the image to CD using IMGBurn also in my signature and boot the troubled computer with the newly created CD and run the Short and Extended tests. If either fails, you need a new HDD.

It doesn't shut off because I could see the back light, it just turns completely black. What's causing this problem and how do I fix it? I checked the Event Logger and there are tons of errors and some critical kernal-power things.

I have an alienware 17 which comes with integrated graphics card (Intel(R) HD graphics 4600) and dedicated graphics card (NVIDIA Geforce GTX 860M). I want to use dedicated graphics so I switch to dedicated graphics by pressing the fn key and f5. A window pops up and says a reboot will be necessary. After selecting yes it reboots and shows the Alienware logo but instead of bringing up the windows 10 start screen-- the screen simply goes black (with background light shining so it looks grey.) If I plug it into a tv with an hdmi cable then the windows start screen will be displayed on the tv and I can go forward playing. Also, if I switch back to integrated graphics then my laptop screen works again.
Can someone please help me fix my computer so that I can switch to dedicated graphics and not have my screen quit working? When I use dedicated graphics Fallout 4 will auto detect hardware and set it to high quality. On the contrary, when using integrated graphics low quality is recommended.

Hello

To be honest that?s a really long story and I think we can?t help you here and tell you what the problem is exactly because it?s just an user to user forum. I think you need professional help from notebook technicians, they can check what the problem is.

According your posting I think it?s a hardware malfunction, maybe the mainboard but this must be checked from professional technicians.

You should contact an authorized service provider in your country. You can find a list of them here:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads > Find an authorized service provider

I?m sure everything you can clarify with the ASP. The guys are really friendly and do a good job.

Good luck! :)

Hi,

Desktop #1 Problem:
When all cords and such are plugged in, I press the power button. The desktop turns on for about 1-2 seconds and then restarts. The bios doesn't flash, the os doesn't boot. As far as I can tell the desktop restarts indefinitely. Any ideas what's going on here?

I found someone with a similar problem here

Desktop #2 Problem:
I bought some 3M Dust Remover a few days ago. I disconnected power, along with everything else, from a desktop of mine. Pulled the cover off and started blowing the dust out of the case. I put everything back together, plugged it in, and the desktop doesn't work. It boots to a blank screen with the the power and hard drive led's stuck on, on the front of the desktop. The led on the back of the power supply turns on, I can hear the hard drive spin up, it detects the cd/dvd drives, floppy drive and then just hangs with the led's stuck on. Anyone have an idea what might be going on here?
--Desktop Type: Compaq Presario S4200NX

Thanks for the help, I'm hoping to get atleast one of these back online w/o buying a whole new desktop.

A:HELP! Desktop turns on and restarts repeatedly, other turns on to black screen

Hi….

Desktop 1:

Do you see anything on your screen at all while this is happening?

Have you tried to press the setup key to see if the BIOS will come up and make changes?

Do you have any USB devices (other than keyboard or mouse) hooked up? If so, try disconnecting them and see if it will at least POST or attempt to go into the OS.

WARNING: Before checking the capacitors, disconnect the power cord on your system and press & hold the POWER button to allow the power to discharge! Also, you should always ground yourself before touching computer components to prevent static discharge!

Just FYI, some of the motherboards in this series of HP’s have issues with the capacitors.

You should take a look at the capacitors to see if the tops of them are raised or discolored. Also, if you put your finger on the top of the capacitors, they should feel as if they are INDENTED and not flush or raised. Raising or discoloration (up to and including a black tar looking substance on the tops indicate a leaking capacitor).

Desktop 2:

Any POST sounds (beeps) produced at all?

Have you tried the monitor from Desktop 1 on this one?

Anything at all displayed on the monitor, to include CHECK CABLE message?

Recommendation: Open the case again and ensure that all the cards, memory, drive cables and so forth are all connect properly and not loose or dislodged.

Do you know how to RESET your BIOS to default using the onboard jumpers?

A:Screen flickers/goes black

You are having a problem with the LCD screen's Flourescent backlight. If the screen is still under warranty send it in for repairs.

If you want to do a little home research....see if a tap on the edges brings it back on. That would indicate a loose connection of some type.

I have been struggling with an intermittent problem for many months, and it is getting worse. I am running windows vista on a toshiba satellite laptop.

My screen will go dark (not quite as black as when the computer is off) when I am using it, and although the computer is still working, I cannot see the screen. Then, on startup, I can occasionally see flashes of the startup logo, which is enough to let me know it is loading. My cursor quits working as well.

After I run spybot in safe mode, and run it again at startup, it works for some time. (This last time was 2 days). So I believe I have a nasty virus. I run Norton 360 all the time, spybot rather frequently, and malaware bytes about once a month.

I am able to get it in safe mode by hitting the down arrow once, and hitting enter.

It is very frustrating. I don't think it is the video card, as it is repaired after spybot use.

Any suggestions?

That is weird situation I'd say. I am unsure what actually is the issue here, perhaps one way of finding what may be happening is having a look at your Event Viewer Logs. You can find Event Viewer, in Control Panel, Administrative Tools.

Also please follow these 8-steps, and post your logs at Malware and Virus Removal Forum for analysis. Regards

I have an Acer Apsire 7741z and it starts up without an issue, the screen appears without any problems but after about 10 to 15 minutes the screen begins to flicker and then goes blank but the laptop is still running. I then let it cool down for about 5 minutes and turn it back on and it starts up and the screen again flickers and goes blank. I tried hooking it up to an external monitor but it's doing the same thing with the monitor (it goes blank and I get the No Signal message) What can it be? Thank you in advance for any help you can provide me with.

I have an ASUS x750ja laptop running Windows 8.1.

The problem: From startup (including bios logo), the screen briefly displays what it should, then goes black. Bios logo, then black. If I enter the bios, it goes black at the first screen. It'll flash the Windows logo, then go black.

I've hooked it to a secondary monitor via HDMI. It seems like a hardware error, but whenever the monitor gets a signal to refresh, it flickers back on. For example, when I have it hooked to the external display, and configure it to extend the display, the laptop screen turns on for a second.

Furthermore, the brightness keys still function.

Hi, My screen is flickering and then eventually just goes completely black after a certain point when opening the lid of the laptop. It has to be at basically a 90 degree angle to the keyboard to function correct. Beyond that it begins the flickering.I've seen comments saying this common and due to ribbon cables. However I only bought my laptop at the beginning of the year and do not wish to fix this myself as I assume it's covered by warranty. How do I go about getting my laptop repaired?
System Specs are as follows:

Start with a call to Dell support - the technician will troubleshoot with you and then if a warranty repair is needed, will initiate the process.

Hi everyone I'm hoping I can find a solution on this site because I don't want to buy a whole new computer. My problem is that my PC will crash to a random solid color such as beige or grey. This started 3 days ago when I was playing csgo with my friends and it happened once. I thought it was just like a BSOD and I rebooted my PC and everything was good for 3 days. Then all of a sudden my PC would crash to these solid colours frequently and eventually to a point where I can't even start up a game because it will just crash instantly. During these crashes I'm sometimes able to hear sound and other times I'm not. It crashes every 30 mins to an hour when I'm not gaming. My dad and I built this PC 2 years ago and I have NEVER experienced any issues with it. All of a sudden with no warnings of symptoms my PC would crash. I got a HP laptop. Offlate,my screen has been flickering a lot...to the extent that i cant even see a thing. If i give the screen a small jerk i.e move the lid up and down, the flickering stops for a while and starts again. The flickering has got so severe now that the screen does not stay stable for more than a couple of minutes.

Is it just a loose wiring problem? Could i solve this at home with a proper set of screwdrivers?

If not, could you please let me know what kinda problem this is, and how do i work it out?

A:Laptop screen flickers a lot

It sounds like you have a break in the ribbon cable that runs from the base to the screen. I have the same problem with mine, but it is ok if I don't try to close the lid. These cables get stressed every time the lid is opened and closed.

A few months ago i had to order a new laptop screen because my old one cracked. When i first had a family member install it, it worked fine. After about a month of having it in, and working fine, it started to mess up. The area at the bottom of the screen, the height of the taskbar started to get lines in it. Eventually it actually started to display the very top of the screen in that small space.
At first i thought that maybe the screen was acting up because the bottom corner screws were too tight. I don't personally know if i have a screwdriver that can unscrew those tiny screws so i never tried to loosen them.
After a few weeks of that problem, my screen started to flicker, or jump. Not flicker on and off, but the screen would flicker around. It's difficult to explain. Now, sometimes the flickering gets so bad a can't see what I'm doing on my screen.
I'm wondering if it's possible that the wires hooked up to the screen are bent or pinched or if their just not plugged in all the way? Or if this is a problem i can fix, and not an issue with the screen itself, because i can not afford another screen.

A:Laptop screen is jumpy and flickers.

I would remove the connections to the screen and then reconnect them, making sure they are clean and secure.

Hello,

I am encountering an issue of when the Dell optiplex 755 boots up, it boots through the Windows XP logo just fine, once it tries to transition between the logo and loading the system up, it just shows a black screen and nothing else happens. I tried using a bootable Windows XP flash drive to repair the system files and it loads the Windows XP setup ok but when it runs through all of the commands on the bottom of the screen and the last one says "Starting Windows" , it takes me to a blue screen (screenshot below). I have HIRENS and have done a lot of the chkdsk commands to fix the files and everything comes back ok. I tried to clone the hard drive with the same exact hard drive and still the same issue. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks for your help in advance.

When I turn on my Dell e1505 the screen lights up but flickers heavily, then goes out before the startup is completed, then flashes on for a brief moment and goes out again. It does the same thing on every restart. I've already replaced the inverter board which seemed to fix it, but then after 10 minutes it flickered out again and now shows the exact same on/off pattern it did with the old inverter.

The screen is on, just with no light. I can see the icons, etc., very faintly if I shine a flashlight on it. Also I plugged a CRT into the back and that works perfectly.

Is there a way to tell if it's the backlight, cables, or motherboard that's the problem? Or is it clear which one it is to anyone here who recognizes these symptoms?

Thanks

Greetings, As the subject describes, my laptop screen flickers quickly and at irregular intervals.  I notice it once every 3-5 minutes or so but it could be more frequent, perhaps at times when I am not concentrating on the screen or it is too light to notice.  It is quite irritating and noticable though.  The flickering started about 3 weeks ago and doesn't seem to be getting much worse.  I spend time in both Fedora 24 linux and Windows 10.  It occurs in both operating systems, but seems to occur more frequently in Fedora.   I had the original screen replaced by a repair shop last year for an unrelated issue.   The flickering is not like the problem posted here:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T440s-Screen-Flickering/m-p/3300477#M108... Any advice is appreciated.  I am afraid my laptop is no longer under warranty, so I will be stuck paying to repair this issue.  If so, I would probably disassemble and replace the effected part myself since I have the tools and some experience doing this.   Thanks

My laptop screen keeps flickering for like 4-5 minutes when ever i wake my laptop from sleep and on startup it stays on a blue screen for  7-8 minutes before going to login screen. how to i fix this? Please help.

A:Laptop screen flickers while resuming from sleep.

Hi, Check if you still get these problems if you disable Windows 10 hybrid boot - you can do this as follows. Open Settings and select System.  Select Power and sleep, then click on Additional power settings - in the following window, click on 'Choose what the power button does' in the left hand pane. In the subsequent window, first click on 'Change settings that are currently unavailable' ( near the top of the Window ) and then remove the checkmark from the box against 'Turn on fast start-up (recommended)'.  Click the Save Settings button, then close any open windows and shutdown the notebook by right click the Start Menu icon, select Command Prompt (Admin) and click ?Yes? to the uac prompt. Type ( or copy and paste ) in the following command ( including spaces ) and hit enter. shutdown /s /t 0 Start the notebook and let Windows fully load. If this has corrected the issues, it may be worth turning Fast Start-up back on ? sometimes just deleting and re-creating the file will resolve the problem. Regards, DP-K

You are unclear, so are you saying you never get an image on your laptop screen? Or does it eventually come up? Do you see the Dell logo at bootup? Can you boot into Setup (Bios)? Can you press F12 at bootup and do the Dell Diagnostics?
Have you tried a separate monitor?

Hello, I really need help with a problem I've been having at random. This has happened 5 times (and counting) and they were all at times I was of course away from my computer. The screen goes black and my keyboard and mouse doesn't light up anymore. My computer is still on but I can hear my CPU fan racing every time this happens.

I don't know exactly why this happens other than a possible graphic driver error but I am updated to the latest. I check my event log and this is the only error that I see happening each time this happens:

I have a Dell Inspiron and it seems that they are the worst that have the problems. It is a vista and a year and a half old. Before it died/crashed it would turn black. In the light i could still see the programs running and it just faded the screen. I tried setting the hibernation to never and turning off screen to never but it still fades to that same blackness. I cant even see properly through it and i cant do anything to turn it back to it was before.

I rebooted it to the factory edition but it still does the same thing. Please help!

Alright, today I hibernated my computer (I usually hibernate) left it for an hour and attempted to turn it back on, now it loads fine but once it gets to the point where it should display the vista logo and then the log in screen the screen goes blank. The hard disk light is blinking fast so fast it's almost just staying on and the wireless does its blinking patterns as if it's redying the wireless connection but the screen remains black. I've tried safe mode, same result. Two screens, same result. I booted Ubuntu and it was fine so I'm using that now.

First of all, any insight into how I should go about fixing this?
If not, I have extremely important files on the hard drive is there any way you could recommend getting them back?

Thanks for any help, I'd hate to have to take it in and risk the guys at the store deciding it's easier just to wipe the hard drive or something.

A:Screen turns black before reaching the login screen

Are you using a Ubuntu Live CD, or are you dual booting?
If you're dual booting, you can access your ntfs partition from Ubuntu using steps listed on many many web sites: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...earch&aq=f&oq=
Some are easier than others.

As for fixing your Vista. I have reservations because in some of my steps Vista has this nasty habit of overwriting the master boot record with its own without warning you (making you unable to boot into ubuntu if you dual boot), so research some more, and proceed with caution. If you boot into the Vista DVD, I think you can click repair, and you have a bunch of options and it looks like this:
http://neosmart.net/wiki/download/at...eryOptions.png
I haven't tried them in a while so I can't really recall what each does.
You can try going back using a restore point. Be VERY cautious with "Startup Repair". I think that's the one that rewrites the master boot record. (if you really need to try it, research how you can backup the master boot record in ubuntu, then restore it if needed - usually a flash drive, a floppy, or a bootable CD may be needed - you most likely would be able to do it from the live cd if you know the steps though).
And if all else fails, do a repair install. Can't recall how it's done, but there are many sites dedicated to that topic. You can also ask around the forum about it.

Hi guys,

Basically as the title suggests, when I turn on my PC it powers up, I hear fans spinning yet my screen will stay black. To add to this when it stays blank my keyboard also does not light up.

So far the only way for me to access my PC is to turn it off and on a few times, usually including completely disconnecting it from the power for a short while.

PC Specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit)
AMD FX(tm)-6100 Six-Core Processor
GeForce GTX 760
8.00 GB RAM
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610 EPS12V 610W Power Supply

Rocca ISKU Illuminated Gaming Keyboard
Rocca XTD Gaming Mouse
(First time having a gaming mouse/keyboard so I was not sure if maybe they caused problems, sucked extra power etc..)

I'm not too experienced with the ins and outs of computers but all I can think is maybe my PSU is not giving enough power (though I get no warning beeps), my Keyboard might be the issue? I hope you guys can help. I've thought, maybe do I need to update the BIOS? If so how do I do that?

A:PC Turns on BUT my screen is still black/blank?

Is this a new build that will not post or has it been running then developed a problem?

Have you tried disconnecting ALL drives [both hd and optical] removing any usb device ie printer, scanner, hub, etc and then pw ON? See if the mb will reliably complete POST. If it does complete post a few times, then start connecting devices one at a time until you find the failed part. If it does not complete POST in the above config, then you will need to start swapping parts with known good units; start with the pw supply.

Next post ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact mb installed, exact ram installed, etc. Note 8gig of ram does not really tell us much; 8gig of corsair 123xxx, tells us a lot more.

If you can get the system to post, enter the bios or uefi and post the following info; cpu temp, system temp, 12V, 5V, and 3.3V values.

Inverters and bad backlights can be hard to diagnose without just replacing the parts but it sounds as one or the other is out/going out.
If you check these out yourself, good luck. Laptops are a bear and unless you've done a few, a repair shop may be best.

I am using Windows 8 on my laptop. If I connect my laptop to a video projector and left it idle for about 4 minutes, the screen turns black. So I am trying to avoid this. Here is what I did so far. First I found that for Windows 8, the option of presentation setting is not available in Control panel -> Windows Mobility Center (Fig. 1).

Next I looked for the screen saver and found that I have not activated it at all. Also the (Fig. 2)

Next I tried to Change the power setting by going to Control panel -> Change power setting -> Change when to turn off the display and set all of the as Never (Fig. 3)

I still got the black screen after doing these. Finally I noticed that after I left my laptop idle for about 4 minutes, it says "maintenance is in progress" in the "Action center". After searching through web, I found that an easy way to stop this maintenance during my presentation. I disconnected from the wireless internet temporary when giving a presentation. I tested this and after disconnecting from internet there will be no "maintenance is in progress".

However, the screen still turns black during presentation, even after disconnecting from the internet. Any help will be appreciated.

Ok so, im trying to help my friend with her broken computer.
She got hit with the avsoft virus, It took me a while but I finally got malwarebytes on her system, and had to rename the .exe in order to get it to run in safemode and it seemed to have worked pretty well, i then wanted to boot it in normal mode and run a full scan to make sure we got everything.
Anyway, we were experimenting with it for whatever reason (i guess malware removal had us feeling brave) and we unhooked her monitor, and plugged her desktop computer via the monitor cord into my laptop. i know that you can plug a monitor into a laptop and use that instead of the laptop screen, so we wanted to see if it would work with the desktop instead of the monitor. You know, like use my laptop as the monitor and keyboard.
I went into the my laptops nvidia control panel and messed around with some of the settings
All of a sudden my laptop screen went black.
I just rebooted, and my laptop was fine but when we plugged her monitor back into her desktop and rebooted it would not reboot correctly.

The lights on the computer would turn on, you can hear it is running, the fans are running, it makes one beep, just like a normal startup. the screen displays a logo (not the windows logo) an everex logo for a few seconds, and then some text comes up (like normally) and looks like it proceeds to load but it flies by so quick you cant read it, and then nothing. Hello. I've come to hopefully find a solution to a boot up problem I'm having with my computer. There are several factors that I'm honestly not sure will play a role or not, mainly because I'm not very understanding when it comes to computers.

The problem is that when I push the power button of my computer, it sends no signal to my screen. I can't tell if it loads anything or not either. I can think of a few things that might have some effect on this, but I'm not sure.

About three months back after cleaning my neglected tower of dust and such, it started to shut off rapidly after boot up. To inspect the problem, I had a friend look at the computer. He removed the cooling unit on the Processor revealing that my 8year old computer had next to no thermal compound. So after putting of ordering some for about three months, we had applied some about 2 days ago. The computer then booted up fine, but seemed to have an excess amount of lag. So I wiped the computer and reinstalled XP tonight. When it was booted up, it worked fine, so I went into IE to download firefox as it's my preference, then started reinstalling my drivers. First I installed my Videocard, then kept my computer booted up for my sound drivers which I got from the Compaq homesite. After doing this, I rebooted my computer. Not I wanted to get simple things such as AIM and and Java. So when i go to boot up Firefox from it's default homepage, my computer shuts down. when I go to reboot it, it doesn't start and I'm ... Ok, so after further testing, hooking my monitor to my onboard video card gets no results either. I've tried removing my memory sticks one by one, also leading to no results. I've tried a different power supply as well, giving nothing new.

Hi, at first I thought this might be virus related. I went through with help from Howard_Hopkinso, and removed all virus' and malware. But my problem persists.

I have an Alienware Area 51 m7700, 120 Gig HD, 3 Gig memory, 3.8 GHz Pentium 4 HT duo processor. NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra.

What happens is when i try and playing a source game for little while the screen goes black, sound skips, but the laptop still runs. Also happens when i click on certain internet links.

I assume that i need updated drivers, which i did. but that didn't work either.

I am lost, any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Screen Turns Black, but computer still on

Try doing a system restore... If this doesn't work, you will have to wipe the laptop's hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows

Hey Tech Support Guy's users,

Yesterday, I got back to my house, and went on the computer for a short while, then while looking on the internet, my Inspiron 1525's screen died on me. Not only my main screen, but also my other monitors as well, saying there was no signal. I was assuming that it is a dying Video Card, but I wanted to have more insight regarding my question. Is my fear correct, or it is the drivers? I haven't updated my drivers since 4 months ago, so I doubt it is my drivers.

Any who, if you need more information from me, please ask away and I will respond as quickly as possible.

-Tempbid

P.s. I wasn't do sure if I was suppose to put it on Hardware or Window 7 section. Felt like, it could be a window 7 error.

A friend asked me to look at her Toshiba Satellite L455 Laptop. Apparently her dog chewed the power cord while her daughter was playing on it. The computer shut down. I replaced the motherboard thinking that was it and that didnt help. I replaced the screen inverter and the backlight and neither of them worked. The computer does turn on but the screen is black.. What could be the problem? If I replace the screen would that work?

Hi guys.

I have installed windows xp many many times and this is the first time its happned. So when i try to install, it seems fine in the beginning. Formatting, Installing some files, then it goes to the part where it prepares the installation and it says something like 39 minutes left. Its still fine there, buh when it goes down to around 34 minutes. My screen turns black and it just dies there. I tried turning on and off my monitor, no luck. Cap lock and Num Lock arent working at all. Fan stops and disc stops spinning.

These are the things i have tried:
1. Tried re-installing, re-formatting many many times
2. Low-level format my hard drive
3. checked my hard drive many times
4. Resetted my BIOS

Please if anyone out there has had the same problem and knows how to solve it. Please help me. Thank you very much.

AMD Sempron 3300+

ATI Radeon se 9600 series

sorry i dunno the exact brand and info on my system, i kant check right now anyway... cuz i dun even hav an OS. so.. please help.

p.s. I've also tried removing all USB all i left there were my Keyboard / mouse (NOT USB) and monitor.

A:screen turns black during XP Installation

Try taking out your graphics card, if your xp disc is SP1 try SP2.
The 34 minutes is the installing devices section.
Its the graphics card it is detecting..it may now be dead..or you can try using the onboard gfx just to pass installation..

Try another card/onboard and clean the agp slot with compressed air.

If you turn the monitor off and back on it will stay normal for maybe a second before it goes pitch black again. The only way i can keep it from going black screen is by slapping the back of my monitor and it goes back to normal for awhile.

Hi. I have a old Dell Inspiron 5000 Laptop and its having some issues. First of all, during the boot process, It'll freeze up. It happens at various stages (shortly after POST, During Windows XP boot Splash screen, during XP welcome screen etc.) I've also noticed that any movement of the laptop causes it to freeze as well sometimes. Also sometimes when i try and power it on, the screen will flicker vertical lines for a few seconds and just remain a black screen. Another issue is that When i power it on, the fan inside won't even come on and then sometimes a few seconds later it will cut off and then come back on (sometimes if i tilt it a certain way). I suspect a loose connection at the motherboard maybe. I have no idea how to dismantle a laptop (Only desktops) so any help much appreciated.

I'm running windows xp professional. I boot up my computer and it shows the windows loading page and then when the desktop should appear, instead the screen goes black and my monitor reads "no PC signal", as if the PC is not connected to the monitor. But that cannot be the case because it showed the windows loading screen on the monitor.
This problem keeps occuring now. It was working perfectly fine up to today. I booted the computer up in safe mode which worked fine, and re-installed the latest nvidia geforce 7300 se graphics card driver. I then rebooted in normal mode and the problem still occured where the screen is black and says "no PC signal." I don't know what to do now, i tried a new vga cable already, but that didn't fix it.
anybody else run into this problem and solve it?

Hello everyone, I'm new here, and I want to start by saying I have minimal experience with my computer (I just built it yesterday using a YouTube video to guide me) so when replying with an answer, don't hesitate to ask obvious questions.

I built my gaming computer yesterday, and it turned on, I installed Windows 10, and everything was working fine. However just a while ago, I took out one of the smaller cables that goes into the CD drive (not the one that supplies power, but the other one) and connected it to my hard drive, because I only had two of those cables and one was going into my SSD. I wanted my computer to detect both hard drives, so I went into the BIOS, and I saw that it acknowledged both hard drives, and then I clicked save and reset. Unfortunately, the new problem is, my monitor won't display anything. It was working 100% fine, and all I did was change the smaller cable from the CD drive to the hard drive, and now my monitor won't display. The cables going into the SSD and the HDD are both connected into the SATA ports on my motherboard, and they both are also connected to my power supply. I have checked to see if it was the monitor by some unlucky chance, and it is working fine (I plugged it into another computer, using the same power outlets, so it's not the outlets either). My computer turns on, and I hear no beeps or anything, and my screen does not display "no input" or anything like that, it simply has a black screen, the monitor is on, and c... Read more

I have a Lenovo Z585 and it seems to be stuck in the early stage of boot up. When powered up the Cap sensor buttons flash every second and the caps lock indicator flashes every other second. Any advice would be most appreciated.

I tried looking in the maintenance manual, but there are no mentions of what your blinking lights mean. I think you need to take it in for service.

Hey guys!

I recently bought a new computer (all separate components which my brother assembled for me) and everything works fine. But as soon as I launch any game (like Crysis, Painkiller, Bioshock) the screen turns black and it doesn't respond to anything anymore. Old online games like quake live run like a charm though. Beyond good and evil runs smoothly, but somehow the eyes don't always follow the rest of the model, making the characters look like retards all the time.

Sounds like your video card is not installed and setup properly. I'd recommend going through the whole installation & setup from the start. If the problem continues then you need to test the vide card.

Ok, so...I just got over my BSOD problem by disabling crossfire on my system. It was working fine for a few days (And it still technically is), but I'm having a strange issue now. The computer turns on and loads windows fine, but the screen is black until Windows actually loads. Basically, I don't see a splash screen for the motherboard and there's no way for me to get into the BIOS.

Has anyone experienced this problem before? Any ideas?

System Specs:
Processor: Intel i7 3960x
Motherboard: ASRock Extreme 9 X79 chipset
16 GB of RAM: Corsair Vengeance 1600 Mhz
Graphics: 2 x Radeon 7970's (Both cards are connected, despite Crossfire being disabled)
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate - 64 Bit

A:Screen goes black UNTIL windows turns on: Can't get into BIOS

Does the motherboard have a built in video port? You could try hooking your monitor to that to get into the BIOS. Then from there.. not sure, maybe the internal video port was enabled by a BIOS reset or something, try turning it off and maybe it'll then use your normal card(s) during POST?

Hello all

Just got myself this (old) new computer, that I was going to use for a media center. But it randomly crashes, and i can't seem to figure out why. I formated it yesterday, so I doubt it would be a virus.

Sometimes it goes black, and picture returns within a few seconds, but other times it freezes up completely. When I restart it (with the power button) I cant get pasted the BIOS screen, but if I unplug the power supply, and hit the power button a few times and then plug in the power, it starts up like normal. (does that make it a RAM issue?)

Freezes have happened doing the following: Using XBMC (both in menus and while watching a video), while Internet Download Manager was running. While file transfer was running, and a few times while i wasnt at the computer.

Specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
ATI Radeon HD 5670
Intel Core i3 CPU
6GB RAM
Phillips TV (Connected with HDMI)

Let me know if you need any other information.
Thanks

Hello,

A friend came to me for help, and I am leary of doing anything without conferring with the experts. Here is the history:

Originally the PC had a periodic BSOD - 0x0000007B. I was able to boot to the "last known good configuration", and run MalwareBytes (cleaning up a number of Adware problems), and I ran the ESET online scanner (which found nothing). I made a restore point just in case.

After one or two more boots, I once again received the BSOD 0x0000007B. Attempted to reboot using last known configuration to no avail. Now all I get is a black screen after the initial boot messages (no windows splash screen).

I have looked at your guides about running CHKDSK, FIXMBR, FIXBOOT. I'm just a little leary that I may lose data on his hard disk (he says that there is a tremendous amount of music on there). I have a few questions:

1. What will be the impact of CHKDSK on his local files (deletion, damage)?
2. I did type in FIXMBR, and it stated the following:

"This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record. FIXMBR may damage your partition tables if you proceed. This could cause all the partitions on the current hard disk to become inaccessible. If you are not having problems accessing your drive, do not continue. Are you sure you want to write a new MBR?"

Can I still run this without damage ?

I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing before continuing. I'm assuming this is an XP proble... Read more
