"extend volume" option is greyed out!

Q: "extend volume" option is greyed out!

I am plying the "Disk Management" in my Vista to try to increasing the volume of (J. However, I found the "extend volume" option for (J is greyed out!
At the moment, the situation (Disk 0 Basic 298.09 GB Online) is:
55MB Healthy (EISA Configuration)
RECOVERY(D 5.12 GB NTFS Healthy (Primary Partition)
OS (C 250.43 GB NTFS Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)
1.46 GB Unallocated
OS2 (J 41.01 GB NTFS Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Logical Drive)
Do you have any suggestion?
Thank you so much in advance.

A: "extend volume" option is greyed out!

I don't know how large you want J to be but, since the total disc space is allocated, I think you're going to have to shrink your C: drive to get extra space for the J. You don't have much to work with if you only have 55 Mb of free space.

I deleted a partition I had added previously for a Linux OS. After deleting it turned green as in "Free Space" I want that available space given back to C. I have included a screen shot of where I am. I don't know what to do next. The "Extend Volume" Option in C is not activated.

A:"Extend Volume" option on C greyed out. Free space available but how?

I`m fairly certain the entire space has to be deleted down to unallocated space, then you can extend C

I recommend making and using a Partition Wizard Boot CD to do all your partition management.

Here's the story. I bought this new Samsung 840 250GB SSD.
I first did a clean install of windows 7 on it and it worked fine. Windows installed without much problem and everything. Then something didn't look right about the partitions. It looked like because I had all my HDDs connected while installing windows on the SSD the windows created the system reserve on the old HDD rather than the SSD. So I went back and decided to start from scratch with all the HDDs except for the SSD disconnected. I tried reinstalling windows on it but this time it didn't work. I tried formatting the SSD and it just gave me an error saying windows couldn't install on a GPT disk. I went into bios, made sure the PC was booting from the UEFI DVD drive and it still kept giving me the same error.

So I then booted up my old HDD. I tried formatting my SSD and now I can't delete the partition!
This is what my disk set up looks like:

If I click "extend volume" on the "New Volume (G" disk, it says "there is not enough space on the disk(s) to complete this operation".
If I try to create a "new simple volume" on the "unallocated" partition, it says the same...

Have I destroyed my new SSD now?! I just want it to work like a new clean disk...

Hey. I recently reformatted my hard drive. Although I have a Dell XPS laptop, I didn't have the disc and reformatted it using my friend's Dell Inspiron disc. We did, however, log into my account on the Dell site and we installed the drivers that originally came with my system.

Everything seems to be fine, except for two problems... (1) the screen resolution feels "squished", like the dimensions aren't right, and (2) when I go to shut down, the option to stand by is greyed out.

Any thoughts?

A:"stand by" option greyed out / screen resolution squished

This seems like your video card drivers aren't installed correctly. I would double check what model video card you have. Go to the Dell site and plug in your Service Tag #. That should pull up what drivers you need to load. If the video drivers aren't loaded correctly it may very well cause the standby/hibernate function to not work.

I have a C: drive which I want to increase in size. Under disk management there is 20GB of "Free space" - (right next to the C: partition). But neither disk management or EASUES partition manager will allow the partition to use this space. How to I change "free space" to "unallocated" so that it can be used ?

A:Cannot extend volume (disk management) although "free space" exists

Can you post a snip showing what you have? An image makes it easier for us to help you. For example, you said that there was 20GB of free space next to your C: partition. What you didn't say was whether it was to the left or right of it.

On the laptop though many folders have this option greyed out (though not all): for instance I like this option (by date) for the recent folder (C:\Users\Martin\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent). OK on the PC, greyed out on the laptop.

Hello,I got 3 equal disks which were a dynamic Raid-5 before. I want to create a Dynamic Raid-5 again in Windows 7 but it's greyed out in the context menu. I can create a mirror, stripped or spanned volume. But no Raid-5 volume. All disks are dynamic disks already and unallocated.Anyone able to help?

A: "New RAID-5 Volume..." greyed out in Disk Management

Sorry for late reply.
After confirming with our product team, it says that RAID-5 is only supported on computers running Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2000 Datacenter Server,  Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 Operating Systems. In Windows 7, only hardware-based RAID is supported.  Thus I recommend that you check your computer to see if it meets this requirement and visit the motherboard?s support web site to download the RAID drive controller drivers.

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

I need to programmatically make some adjustments to the Internet Explorer security settings. Most of these settings I have found but there are a few I have not been able to get a clear exact location for in the registry. I will be using a .BAT file to make
the adjustments on 100+ PCs.

Here is what I am looking for.....

Under the "Internet  Properties" found in control panel, under the "Privacy" tab there is an "Advanced" option button. When I click on it I get an "Advance Privacy Settings" options box. On it are several settings.
The first setting, "Override automatic cookie handling" needs to be checked in order to access the other options. I can do that by adjusting the DWord value of "PrivacyAdvanced" under the "Internet Settings" key in the registry,
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet settings", to be specific.

What I have not been able to find are the registry entries for the "First-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, the "Third-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, and the "Always allow
session cookies" check box. Please see picture below....

Hello all,
I have seen posts about this problem but was unable to find an answer. I am running Firefox 3.6.17 on Windows 7 Pro 64x. When downloading files from the Internet I am unable to "Open" or "Open the containing folder", in other words I can't get to the download. I am running the free version of Zone Alarm and use free AVG anti-virus. I don't recall changing anything in those programs recently. It seems like all the sudden I am not able to download content any longer. It has worked fine in the past. This is a homebuilt machine. What would be the things to try, either in the antivirus or firewall if there were setting changes made there? Barring that are there any other things I could try?
Thanks in advance for all the help.

The "Idle-time Full System Scan" in Norton 360 v4 is bogging down my computer constantly, and there is no option to turn it off in "Automatic Tasks".

I contacted Norton and (after several attempts to find someone at Norton who could understand what I just said above and getting "hung-up" on over Norton chat. Inexcusable!!!) I was able to get a hold of a technician who told me that Norton intentionally removed this option "for security reasons, because they didn't want people turning it off".

The problem is, people will then be forced to turn it off by turning off ALL scheduled tasks (under "Settings/Scheduling/Schedule:Manual Schedule") and that is an even worse security problem than the relatively small one that would be created by turning off idle-time full system scanning.

Once the system has completed a full system scan, all files are on-access scanned anyway, so running a full system scan every 3-4 days is rather silly and extremely annoying--especially, because it will continue to try to run every time the system is idle if you cancel it.

A warning urging the user to not turn off idle-time full system scans without fully understanding the risks, and after explaining the risks, would be VERY preferable. Or at least the option to run the full system scans when the system is idle on a certain day of the month/week! The schedule for idle-time full system scans really needs to be separate from other tasks. In fact, t... Read more

Hi all,

Sorry to repeat a question I see a lot of instances of, but none of those seem to be addressing my problem correctly.

I have not done anything new to my computer in recent days, so this problem has caught me off guard (I see most instances of this problem come after upgrading to Windows 7, I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

A:Stuck on "Starting Windows", Repair Shows "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted"

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

3. If neither of those work, its likely that because of the fact that when windows is repairing itself, it is generally putting copies of its system files in the same physical location on your disk. Because your disk is obviously not completely dead, ie....its still loading to the windows 7 startup screen, its just copying files to the bad sectors on your hard drive and gets stuck when loading. This is especially my guess because you said Safe mode is having same problems, even after attempting to repair. In the past, I've tried and salvage a disk by reformatting it and only leaving on partitions which do not contain the bad clusters. This takes some time, and some guess work.....and really this is only a "bandaid" fix because once the disk has bad clusters, its only a matter of time before these things give out. You wouldn't want to trust your important data on it anyways....

I hope this leads you in ... Read more

Ok, so I got my Maxtor 300 Gig SATA Hard Drive and used the XP utility to create it. This is the first time I did that--I was so used to using Fdisk, I always did it that way in the past. Anyway, I'm using it as a data drive and followed the wizard in XP and ended up with a "Dynamic" volume instead of basic. I guess that's the default when you go through the wizard--I just kept clicling the "next" not even really paying attention to the choices as I usually do since I'm impatient!

Anway, I Googled and noted you need this for RAID drives and its not recognized in OS other than 2000 and XP, but is there any advantage to it? I'm not running a RAID configuration and my main OS disc is "basic". Does it matter? I can change it to basic it seems pretty easily according to MS article on it.

Hello .

You can use the Partition Wizard boot CD to Move/Resize the left side of the Extended into the unallocated space, this snip below will give you an idea of the process and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

As good and reliable a program as Partition Wizard is, I would not trust the installed version for the operation you need, use the boot CD as suggested and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

First download the Partition Wizard Bootable Disk (PWBD) ISO file to the desktop, be sure to get the PWBD and not the installed version; scroll down to see the download link for the Bootable CD ISO file at this link below. Partition Wizard Free Bootable CD

Then use ImgBurn to burn the ISO to a CD, at no greater than 4x speed with a verify; it was designed for use and works best from a CD rather than a DVD; then boot the created CD to make the changes, it doesn't take any input from the user to setup, just relax and let it load. I believe that is normal since the recovery console assigns letters based on which partition it sees first. It is not aware of the fact that the System Reserved partition doesn't get a drive letter assigned as does Windows.

But today I needed to restore my computer to a previous restore point. Every time I press F8 to get to the advanced boot option I see everything is okay except the "repair your computer" option. Somehow the "repair your computer" option disappeared. I tried ctrl+F11 button and the F11 button too. F11 button worked for my previous vista home premium but for Win-7 it's the F8 key. Can anyone help me with this please? How may I get the "repair your computer" option back? Is there any way to edit advanced to boot option to get that option back? Hi all,

Here's my setup: Nvidia video card>HDMI out to Sony Home Theater System>HDMI out to Samsung HDTV. I use this to get 5.1 LPCM surround sound for video games. It worked fine until I did a firmware update on the Sony unit. Now, the HDMI audio is greyed out in Windows 7 audio playback options. Nvidia Control Panel sees the device as audio compatible, but Windows does not.

Audio DOES work if I connect a different display (through the same system). I connected an Acer computer monitor and everything worked normally. It also works it I connect it directly to the Samsung TV. The Sony unit works on its own or with the Acer monitor connected. When the monitor is connected, Nvidia Control Panel sees the home theater system as Sony AV System and Audio Playback reports SonyAVSYSTEM. When the Samsung TV is plugged in, Nvidia CP sees the home theater system as Sony Digital Display and Windows audio just says the cable is unplugged (doesn't report anything). I'm getting picture with this setup, but I can't even select the audio option.

I'm going crazy at this point, I have Sony working on it from their end and Samsung insists it's not their fault. Is this a Windows problem? I find it strange that Nvidia CP can recognize the unit and marks it as audio-capable, but Windows says a cable is unplugged. A:Nvidia HDMI "not plugged in" (greyed out), video, but no audio

Although you are having some type of issue with the audio, its really an issue with the Video Card, since the Video card generates the audio for HDMI. If I understand your post, you are only concerned with HDMI audio and not the regular PC's audio (which is separate and thus the RealTek has nothing to do with it).

If you haven't done it, install (or reinstall) the latest NVIDIA drivers for your video card and see if that helps.

Does anyone know why "send page by email" is greyed out in Internet Explorer 8?

This add-on is installed and enabled in IE 8, but it still will not work.

I normally use Firefox and even though I read a few bad reviews about it's ?Email the Web? add-on, I went ahead and installed it because there is no alternative now for the newest update for Firefox because the "Send Page by Email" Firefox add-on isn't yet compatible with the newest 3.6.12 Firefox update... it appears that I'll have to install Safari to use the built-in send page by email feature.

Though Internet Explorer 8 comes with a "send page by email" add-on pre-installed, it does not seem work anymore... even though it?s "send page by email" add-on is enabled, the option is still grayed-out and inaccessible under ?file?.

The ?Email the Web? add-on for Firefox installs and has a nice interface button, as well as the file menu choice, but that?s where the good things end and the problems start. The initial interface is a bit cumbersome, then it takes me to a webpage to log-in to a Google account, and if I don?t already have a Google account, I have to jump through all the hoops to create one, then I must be logged in to that anytime I want to send a webpage by email, then instead of working with my default email app, I need to enter email addresses manually unless I have a gmail account to import addresses from... then after the 10 minutes that it takes to get thr... Hi All,

To make a long story short I have a win8 system on a SSD with about 200gb free on the left of the C: partition (left over from previous OS I dual booted). The ssd is gpt partitioned and boots using EFI.

I tried moving the partition to the left using Gparted which worked but windows wouldnt boot. I tried recreating the bcd files with no success. After doing some research I was lead to believe it was due to keys under HKLM\System\MountedDevices having the partition offset hardcoded as it would start to boot windows then crash with an error saying boot device inaccessible.

I got it booting again by moving the partition back to the correct position and recreating the bcd files again.

So are there any guides or tools that can move the partition to the left and update the relevant areas of windows so that it can boot? Or extend the partition to the left without breaking it?

I want to uncheck it, so that I can have normal logins again.
I went into Control Panel/Display/Settings and I couldn't find the option again.

Do you have any ideas?

I'm running XP Pro 32-bit SP3. In my music collection (located in My Documents), I typically put an image file for an album labeled folder.jpg so it's displayed on the folder when looking at thumbnails. However, I've noticed something strange that I can't figure out. Some folders I'm positive have a "folder" image are no longer visible within the folder in Windows Explorer. I can put the image's file path in and actually view the image, but I can't see it when looking in the folder. I have "show hidden folders" checked on, but the image still isn't visible.

In the meantime, I had started using XYplorer as an Explorer supplement, and it turns out I can see the image file in the folder using XYplorer (though it's displayed as a hidden file is/not opaque). When I check out the properties for the image, the "Hidden" checkbox is checked, but it's greyed out so I can't unhide it. It's only these "folder.jpg" images I've had trouble with, so it's over my head. I've tried the "attrib -h" command that I've seen around, but it doesn't do anything for me. Any help appreciated!

If the Properties/Hidden box is greyed out then the file is considered a System file

You should use

I am having this exact same issue on my Lenovo E520. In the Advanced User Accounts - the box to check to "require users to press ctrl-alt-del" is greyed out. In the Local Security Policy I have disabled the Interactive Login. With these changes made the computer will require the Ctrl-Alt-Del during the first reboot but will revert to the factory settings upon subsequential reboots. I believe it is caused by the fingerprint scanner software or drivers but the uninstall option is not available in the Delete Programs utility. Also I am leary on removing these as I don't want to cause conflicts with the other Lenovo factory installed software. Any suggestions?

Hi Guys

The option to connect using a dial up modem is disabled.

I've searched on the net to find out a resolution, and have tried the following:
- start the Remote Access Connection Manager service
- start the Telephony service
(both of the above report the error "1058 the service cannot be started either because it is disabled, or it has no enabled devices associated with it"
- deleting nextId from telephony (using regedit)
- deleting rows 25 and 26 from some other regedit entry

all of which, after reboot, still prevent me from selecting the dial up model option.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

No need to feel like an *****.

First of all you can try using a windows 98 boot disk to boot to your CD. I'm not sure where that will get you, if you don't want to reinstall the OS (and lose everything).

Secondly, you shouldn't have a problem putting that HDD into an old computer and pulling the files off of it. Just make sure the jumper is set properly on the back of the drive (Master, Slave, or Cable Select). Plug it in and power it on, Windows should find the drive and allow you to transfer files.

As far as the error code goes and what can be done..... I don't have a great answer for you, but maybe someone else will. Just be patient and see what comes along.

Hey everyone,

I have an old laptop with a battery that lasts about 3.5h in "Power Saving" mode. I'm going to be stuck next week for about 7 hours at a location with few available public outlets and need to stretch my battery life as much as possible.

I've already done the obvious generic tips of "defragging the hard drive", "dimming the screen", "using few/no external devices", "tweaking my power usage settings", etc, but it's not enough.

I'm looking for some good "techie" solutions now like "underclocking the CPU" or "removing the CD drive". All suggestions are appreciated. I'd love to try to squeeze another 2 hours out of this battery if possible (no, I don't have another battery and don't need to buy one just for this one event.)

(PS: Another idea: Removing HDD and booting from USB Flash drive?)

A:Looking for "techie" ways to extend battery life

Removing the HDD and booting from a flash drive is probably the worst decision you can make. Flash drives have very slow speeds (even though they are flash memory, they arent fast) and very little capacity. Keep the HDD.

There are only a few more ways to improve battery life other than dimming your screen and adjusting the power usage settings. Under-clocking the CPU is really done by the "power saving" mode.

Try these suggestions:
1) Run this tool:
2) Turn of your network adapter. There is usually a switch on the side of the PC that toggles the network adapter on and off. That will save you a ton of power. Also make sure bluetooth is off. I dont think your older PC will have it, but just make sure.
3) Use this tool to remove any unnecessary processes from start up. This will speed up your computer while also reducing the amount of processes that run (thus reducing CPU and RAM usage).

I can suggest other options, I just need your OS. If it is Windows 7, it is easy too, if it is XP, I cant really help there since I forgot the OS.

I am looking for an E-Z way to select a certain number adjacent cells in an MS Excel VB macro.

Yes, I know, I know, there are a bunch of ways to do this but I was wondering if there were an easy way similar to the way you can do this in a MS Word VB Macro.

In MS Word if you have an active selection you can extend it (in this case, seven characters to the right) thusly:

Selection.MoveRight Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=7, Extend:=wdExtend

This is great because you don't have to figure out where you are or calculate at which character the selection should end. You just tell it to include the next seven characters to the right.

Is there an analogous, simple method for cells in Excel VB?

A:Solved: Looking for easy way to "Extend Selection" in MS Excel VBA

Hi there,

Of course there is. Some commands which you might be interested in are Offset and Resize. Although we need to know what you are trying to do. In Excel VBA there is little need - almost none - to select or activate anything. You can work with the ranges as desired without performing these inefficient actions. What are you trying to do? Here are a couple of ways to get a larger extended selection...

'Selects from the activecell, the 7 cells to the right
Activecell.Resize(1, 8).Select

'Selects the cell 7 cells to the right of the activecell
Activecell.Offset(0, 7).Select

'Selects the cell 7 cells to the right of the activecell, then extends the selection to the 7 next columns (same row)
Activecell.Offset(0, 7).Resize(1, 8).Select

Hey, so I have been using two monitors for quite a while now with no problems. I recently reformatted my computer and straight away, I had no support for my second monitor. I have an Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 as my primary display and the onboard graphics card that I hope to use with my secondary monitor. Like I said, up until after the reformat, everything was working fine. It says I have to latest driver for the onboard card. It also looks like a screen saver is on the secondary monitor. I can also move windows over to it but they just don't show up. I have this picture and as you can see, the '2' monitor is 'grayed' or 'dotted' out. I don't know if that is part of the problem. I can click extend, but when I hit apply, it doesn't do anything. Any ideas?

Hello all,

So recently I had a spot of trouble installing new creative audigy drivers. After much headache I was able to reinstall the sound card but now under sound playback options all the drop downs are greyed out and it simply says "no playback devices". My sound card is installed properly with no problems in the device manager. my windows audio under services is on, I have tried uninstalling the sound card, reinstalling it, installing old drivers... pretty much everything one could do with the sound card.

After some research online, I find this is not an uncommon problem. The common solution seems to be a clean install of windows, but I was hoping we could fix this without resorting to a fresh install.

Any ideas??

Thank you for your time.

You are doing it right. It is just sometimes software developers do things like that (another example would be MS Office).

Do you recommend "basic" or "dynamic" volume/partition method in Windows 10?

I plan to format a new 4TB HDD to be used for 3 purposes:

1. A secondary disk for windows paging file. Size = 3xRAM = 50 GB
2. Data drive (mydocs, music, video, photo, downloads, etc.) ~3.45 GB
3. Space for a image of my OS + apps of ~500GB

The OS and apps are on a separate SDD.

A:"Basic" or "Dynamic volume/partition method for HDD?

I'd keep the page file on SSD (you want it on the fastest drive you have) and have one partition on the new drive. There is no need to create a separate partition for system images - they can just go in their own folder.

Couple of days ago I switched over new ISP in Macedonia, on T-Home with a Optic Broadband (I don't know if that's the correct terminology) and they gave me a new router, Huawei (don't know the exact model, will update asap). The thing that confuses me that there is no cable modem, the optic cable goes straight to the router and it's used like normal router, Wi-Fi, one LAN port for PC and another empty port. Because the W-Fi coverage isn't that good, I was thinking of setting up a secondary router, insert the LAN cable that goes from the Huawei router to PC now to go from the Huawei router to the new router. From the new router to put a cable that goes from the secondary router to the PC, BUT, there is big BUT in my mind because I can't see any way that I would configure the second router to get to that internet connection. As the title there a registry setting to change the amount of time Windows 7 waits before showing an application's window title with "Not Responding" in it?

All too often (especially on my slowish laptop) Windows is just too quick about it, and those apps continue just fine after a brief moment or two.

A simple question, but one to which the answer was impossible to find via Google. Either it's for XP/Vista, is an ugly workaround or simply a registry setting that has nothing to do with the issue, or I find articles about how to actually kill hung processes automatically. Doh.

A:How do I extend the time until an app is marked "Not Responding"?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have Vista Basic Home and I want to put more gigs into my "C" Drive. I want to take from my "D" Drive which is located right next to/to the right of my "C" Drive. I am familiar with the basic steps but, when I get to the step to right click "C" to choose EXTEND, it won't let me. I think it's becaue of the my "D" drive is to the right of my "C." Any input would be greatly appreciated.

A:Extend "C" Drive

The problem is that you first need to shrink D to get the free space and then you can expand C into that free space. At the moment, you have nowhere to expand to. If D is your "Recovery Drive" you really shouldn't do this and should leave that partition alone as it may be required to restore your system should a major problem occur. It may need more space than it is using to carry out that function which may explain why it seems to have available space when it may actually not have as much as it seems if it is to work properly when/if needed. You should contact the computer manufacturer to discuss this before proceeding if this is the case. If you really need the space on C: drive, post back and I'll repost some procedures and tactics designed to free up space on C: and perhaps remove the need to repartition.

If it is still an option you can and want to consider, the following articles should help. How to Shrink a partition: Disk Management - Shrink Partition to get the free space from D. Then how to delete and expand a partition (in this case, you would just be extending into the free space you created when you shrunk D - you would not be deleting D): Disk Management - Delete and Extend. I believe you can do this with unallocated space and don't actually need to turn that into a named partition, but I could be wrong and you may need to create a partition of this unallocated space to expand C into (but I don't think so). If so, just do it, name it, and then proce... Read more

Hey guys, I need some help here. Here my disk management screenshot:

Okay so basically I want to extend my "WD2" partition, which i tried doing there, but then I get that message so I just pressed No because I'm not sure what dynamic disks are.

I then tried doing it through command prompt, and when I do "extend", I get:
? Virtual Disk Service error:
The size of the extent is less than the minimum ?

So yeah, not sure what to do right now and why it's acting like that in the first place.

So 2 questions:
What would be the best way of handling this?
Why is it doing this? Would it not do this if the unallocated space was on the far right?

Hmm, read up a bit on Partition Wizard but can't figure out how to get rid of these 2x 8mb unallocated volumes, so I haven't pressed Apply yet.

A:I need help to extend my "WD2" partition

Those 8MB spaces can't be moved or re-alocated. They just are.
As for the 9GB unalocated space you should be able to move that into the WD2 drive. But because the WD2 drive is 90% full it doesn't have enough room on the drive to move thing around to allow it. First move some of the stuff off that drive so you have something like 50% free. Then try incorporating that 9GBs into the WD2 drive.

Not sure if it's related, but my DISPLAY is locked at 640 X 480.

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?

I have read quite a few threads talking about this both here and elsewhere and none of them seem to give me any advice that both applies to my specific situation and resolves the issue.

I am using an XFX 5770 card with a dual monitor setup and would like to be able to run theater mode l did in the past on my old system with a 4650 card (XP installed on the old system).

The two monitors are the same that I used on the old system when the theater mode worked as are the cables (HDMI to a 52" Samsung and DVI adaptor to VGA cable for a small regular monitor). Since the cabling and the monitors are the same as they had been when it was working on the other system I ruled them out the cause of the trouble.

I have tried the 10.6 and 10.5 CCC versions and nothing seems to work.

Here is a screen grab of what the CCC looks like for me without the theater mode option:

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi everybody,

I recently followed Microsoft to this wonderful Windows-10 offer.
I didn't much like it, so I restored an image made just before I upgraded to Windows-10.
Image is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
This image also contained the many Microsoft Nags telling me "I'm ready to go".

I thought I got rid of most of those.

Now I find that using the Windows Update utility still lists the "Upgrade to Windows10 Home" link, as an optional update. I don't want to do that.

My issue is: No matter how I try to ignore that link, (hiding the link, checkBox OFF), Windows Update will always begin with the "Upgrade to Windows-10" ... all 3GB of it.

So, if anyone can help me get rid of not only that Optional Update link from my life, but anything else that might be lurking, I would be grateful. As a matter of fact, I will choke down a healthy shot in your honour.

How can I remove the "Filmstrip" option from the View submenu of the right-click context menu for folders?

I've been doing a lot of troubleshooting, and something I changed a while back must have added the Filmstrip option. For a very long time, the 'Thumbnails' option was at the top, so I keep setting it to Filmstrip by mistake. I know it's not a big deal, but it is annoying, and since I never want to use Filmstrip view, I'd like to just remove the menu option completely.

Hi I have a concern. Just restored an acronis OS backup. Only two drives connected. Sata one is OS. the E-Sata one is a backup drive.

I can access both drives fine via explore, open or double click.
But on the esata backup drive,, I keep seeing a 3rd option "Open Autoplay...". It also allows me to access the drive.

I tried unchecking the 'use autoplay for all media and devices', but this option still persists.

Is this normal for Vista x64 Business?

- Thanks.

A:Solved: "Open Autoplay..." context option normal in Vista?

That's quite normal for all removable storage devices on all editions of Windows Vista.

"I tried unchecking the 'use autoplay for all media and devices', but this option still persists."

Unchecking the option merely stops the autoplay dialog box from opening automatically, whereas the right-click context-menu for "Open Autoplay" allows you to open the autoplay dialog box manually. It's a matter of personal preference, but the manual option will always be available in the context menu regardless of the settings in the Autoplay options.

Hi everyone -

Since the new year, I have observed in a few systems including the one I use most frequently, that a right-click on any program or file brought up in the start menu brings up only one selection - "Properties". And when selected, "Properties" brings up the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" screen - just as if I were clicking on the Quick Task bar itself and selecting Properties.

I haven't really gotten into this yet and before I do, I wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced anything like this or knows what may be the underlying cause.

All virus and malware scans are clean; DSS incorporting HiJackThis are free and clear of debris.

Thank you. . .

A:Right-click Start menu programs only brings up "properties" option

Hello mate i had the exact same problem!

If you open the registry editor and go to:

There you should find a key called "NoChangeStartMenu".
Make sure the value of this is set to 0 and if not change it.

Also check here:

You should find the same key "NoChangeStartMenu"
And make sure this is also set to 0.

Restart your computer and your problem should be solved.

Right *deep breath*

The first thing that went wrong with my computer was to do with Mcafee On access scan. A week or so ago the little "V" sign stopped appaering in the system tray. Also, when I start the computer the red box that says "welcome to Mcafee" and which version you're running and stuff stopped appearing. I accessed the on access scan through program files and it told me that the on access scanner was enabled and working so I wasn't too fussed that it didn't appear.

Now, yesterday my computer went weird. The "run" option on the start menu disappeared and so did the "Turn Off Computer" red button. Both of them just disappeared. Task manager was also unavailable. When I pressed Ctrl, Alt and delete a box just popped up and said something like "task manager has been disabled by your administrator". I ran Virus Scan, Ad Aware, Spware blaster and Spybot Search and destroy. They all found various stuff on my computer and I got rid of it. After I did that Task Manager worked again, Which was good. However the "turn off computer" and "run" were still missing from the start menu. Well I googled around a bit and realised this guy had the same problem:

He managed to resolve it by logging off and running a program called ewido. I downloaded the trial of ewido and ran it, following his instructions. It found loads of stuff but when I'd quarantined... Read more

Is there a way in 10 to add modifiers or switches to a default program?

For example, I would like a .xlsx Microsoft Excel file to open with C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" /e "%1 (That is, adding " /e "%1 to the command line of the .exe file)

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations lets me change the default program, but not HOW the program opens.
When I click on a file type, a pop up only gives me the option of keeping the existing default, or looking for a different app. But no right-click option or otption to modify how the program opens (as I believe there was in XP & 7).
(Also, is there a better way I could have described the issue in the subject line?)

Thank you,

A:How do you edit default program for file type to include "/" option?

I would think you should be able to edit the shortcut to the executable with command switches or create a batch file to run using those same switches. Nothing should have changed with this process in Windows 10.

a friend told me how to set up my screensaver so that it scrolls thru all my pictures in "my pictures" folder. I've done so, but there's quite a delay between pictures, it doesn't seem like it's showing pictures from the whole folder, sometimes the pictures are very small off to one corner, and in-between pictures the screen is blank for a bit and usually has a symbol on it such as a musical note, "exit", a figure running, etc. My friend seems to have hers set up the same way, but it doesn't have these problems. It just scrolls thru her pictures, one after the other, with the pictures taking up the whole screen.

I used default program editor, it doesn't show the way to remove it.
I tried using shellexview, shellmenuview, both not user friendly, cant seem to find what I want.

However I have found the registry in regedit to the rotate ones through shellviews but it won't let me make any changes. I tried giving permission so i can change it but it wont give me permission to give permission to change. when i change it says some program still running it but of course nothing is running it and ontop of all that I don't even know how or what to change.

Those "Rotate..." items are put there by Windows Photo Viewer. If you only see them with jpg files, I guess you are using another image viewer that has taken the associations for everything but jpg? You might try to add jpg to that other photo viewer's associations.

Otherwise, a quick fix is to disable Windows Photo Viewer. Navigate to:
C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer\PhotoViewer.dll

Take ownership and full control of PhotoViewer.dll
Rename to PhotoViewer.dll.bak

You might like an alternate image viewer - how about FastStone Image Viewer
download link here
I recommend using the portable version.
In the settings interface, associate all your image files with FastStone and everything will open with it, and no context menu "Rotate.."

P.S. I did look for a registry or a dll-hack fix, but it is not readily apparent - maybe buried in binary code somewhere ...

remove the disk and reboot. You should be fine.
