Making All Files Visible In Downloaded Program File

Q: Making All Files Visible In Downloaded Program File

Hi,

In c:\ windows\downloaded program files, I see references to Java and Shockwave. But there are a number of files in this folder that I do not see. I have all files visible in the folder options.

I know that there are other files in this folder because I can see them when using command.exe.

Advice please

Thanks

A: Making All Files Visible In Downloaded Program File

It may be better to get the folder out from under the Windows folder. I have been downloading to C:\download since Win9x and it's worked well.

My computer: Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 AMD 64bit

I am aware of the two folder for program files, but this scrn shot(attachment) will explain it more..
My "Program Files (x86)" folder is not showing up in my C drive list, it is still there, but not appearing any ideas? I think other folders are not showing as well..

A:"Program Files (x86)" folder not visible anymore

in Vista, some system files and folders are marked hidden. If you want to see them you have to set them to be seen using folder properties
You can set the properties for individual files and folders, or system wide.

Generally, the system folders are marked hidden in order to protect them from untrained users accidentally deleting necessary files.

in search options you can choose to search system and or hidden files and folders.

My computers are both running Win 7 64-bit. I am thoroughly confused when it comes to placing programs that I download into their proper folders: That is, program files (x86) vs program files. I have read stuff on this, but still confused. for the most part, even when a dl'd program suggests being installed into PF, I, for whatever reason, place it into PF (x86). Although I have read that placing the program into the wrong folder may cause the program not to work properly, so far I have not had this problem...nor any other problems that I am aware of. Could someone please set me straight on this issue?

A:Program Files or Program Files (x86)-Where to place downloaded program

I let the installer put it where it is supposed to.

If I trust the software I trust they know best where it should be installed/placed.

If I can't trust the software maker why am I downloading/installing their program?

Hello, Please help me. I have Windows 2000 Professional. I'm pretty new to all this as I have only had a computer for about a week. I got some adware threats detected by Norton Antivirus 2004 and have done a lot of reading up and I am now tring to delete them.

One of the removal instructions provided by Norton promps me to delete a file in C:\Winnt\Downloaded Program Files but when I go to view this folder it looks like there are no files inside. Now, I know there are files in there as Norton Antivirus has picked up one in there and when I view the proporties for that folder it states there are 12 files inside but when I view the folder with Windows Explorer it appears empty!

I've gone into folder option and changed the settings so it shows hidden files and hidden system files yet this still doesn't let me view the files in this folder. How can I delete this file if I am unable to view it?

If anyone can point me to a turorial that explains this or explain it to me I would really appreciate this.

Please help a n00b.

Cheers, Luke.

A:Unable to view files in C:\Winnt\Downloaded Program Files

I'm assuming you have done this to Show hidden files and folders:
Go to Control Panel/Folder Options/View and select "Show hidden files and folders"

Also, place a check in "Display the contents of system folders"
And,uncheck "Hide protected operating system files(Recommended)"

If the above doesn't work try this:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced.
Create the REG_DWORD ShowSuperHidden (if it doesn't already exist) Set the value to 1, click OK, and close the Registry editor

I have two programs in this folder , one of which is my antivirus(norton) and the other is Download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab. I ran an hijack this log about a week ago and it did not show up on the log. Ikeep a log to compare readings, this scan it showed up on the hjt log. Are these programs already installed and can be deleted from the folder?

A:Downloaded program files?

The Norton one will be your update ActiveX,
The Flash is macromedia ActiveX control.

Both can be deleted,

However when you next update Norton it will be reinstalled, and by deleting the shockwave control will mean you will not be able to view some websites properly

Both are legitimate controls and can be safely left on your system

I downloaded Norton Internet Security from the Net. Tried to install it but ran into a problem so I want to do an XP Home System Restore to a date earlier than the download. Doing so will lose all the recent downloaded Internet files so I need to find the NIS download file and burn it to CD before doing the restore. The desktop icon properties show the path but Windows Explorer only shows four temporary Internet folders, I think it creates new ones for each session, and I cannot find earlier ones. I've tried "show hidden files" but without success and have run a search in Explorer as well.

Any suggestions on how I can find older downloaded Internet files?

A:Where does IE6 put the downloaded program files?

Where the download is saved depends on your browser settings and whether you selected a folder at the time.
If you can remember the name of the downloaded file (or part of it) you can do a search for that file. If you cannot remember go back to the download site and follow the links to download and at some stage the filename will be visible.

I have a Downloaded Program File entry, that has "unknown status", no creation date, and it says "none" under Last Accessed.

It does claim to be 4kb's in size.

This program file has no name, but instead, is a grouping of numbers and letters, all enclosed in parenthese..{}.

Highlighting it, and right clicking it only brings up the properties of the entry.

It cannot be deleted either from the keyboard, or from the menu...File>delete..Edit>cut.

The properties of this entry show it to be an Active X control, (with no creation date, no access date and no status. It does not appear to be damaged...it does not say that there are any damaged files associated with it).

I dont feel comfortable giving you the codebase http address, because Im not sure if it turns into a link that anyone can access. But I will tell you that it includes the words; fpdownload, macromedia, polarbear, ultrashim.cab

Using my search bar to go to that location brings me to a folder, with an apparent program that has yet to be installed.

There are 3 icons in this cab folder...a .dll icon, a configuration/notepad icon with the name "erma", and the remaining icon is an INSTALL icon.

Clicking on any of these icons brings up a command to "extract", or copy.

I do vaguely remember going to macromedia.com, (adobe.com) a couple of weeks ago, and downloading and installing the adobe flash player and the shockwave player. I seem to remember that when I first began us... Read more

Hi
I have a desk top PC with Windows XP SP3 and use IE 8. When I clicked on Tools> Internet Options.>General Tab>Browsing History>Settings and then View Objects I found there were 17 entries with one dating back to 2005. Some entries are associated with programs that have long since been removed. Of the 17 files listed 10 were shown as "Installed" in the Status column while 6 were shown as"Damaged" and 1 as "Unknown".
Some of the "Damaged " files have either "none" in terms of size or "none" shown as a creation date.
Can anyone tell me whether or not it is safe to delete these entries?
I would appreciate any advice
Thank you.

Good evening everyone---

First, I will state that I'm using WinXP Home and IE6...

I was wondering if anyone could please tell me how to get the files within the C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files folder to appear? It used to display all the active x controls and plugins that I had downloaded, but now it shows zero items? However when I right click on the folder and choose properties it says it contains 6 files. They also do not appear under add/remove programs in control panel.

I would like to get these files to appear, so that I can right click on them and choose the remove option.

If it isn't possible to get these items to appear, is there some command I can execute in order to remove/unregister these active x controls/plugins?

Much Thanks in advance!

Hi.
I have an HP Pavilion running Vista home premium.

When I am cleaning my computer out at the end of the day, I open up internet options and "veiw objects", which brings up my DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES folder.

In there are 3 or 4 active x files.

But 1 in particular has a status of DAMAGED.

Vista is different in that I cannot just delete this damaged file, like I could in XP, or in earlier windows versions.

All I can do is right click it, which brings up a "properties" link.

This damaged file is an active x file, and the "code base" reads like this:

http://platformdl.adobe.com/NOS/getPlusPlus/1.6/gp dot cab (I changed this to read 'dot com' because it appears to be a direct hyperlink to my computers files...and I dont know if anyone could click on this and open my files...so, i added the dot com)

The link takes me to a gp[1] file that looks like it originates from my adobe illustrator installation, and inside this file are several Adobe GetPlus application files, a .dll and a .ocx active x file.

Here is the explorer folder trail to this GetPlus folder that is apparently corrupted.

Temporary Internet Files>Low>Content IE.5>PO6ALQ9S>gp[1] (which appears to be a cab file, as it has that icon that looks like a two drawer blue file cabinet with the bottom drawer half open).

I was looking around my PC - internet prop, settings, view objects and found many DL program files. Some are listed more than once installed, same day and version; some status unknown; some total size '0'. Surely some can be deleted - if not all - but?? Surprised the control panels add-remove does not show these programs to be installed??Esp Java runtime enviroment? Where do these programs originate from?? I know the Java program I am running is 1.5.0. updated to 6 but it does not show in this file. Even found some Symantec Script Runner Class and RuFSI Utilit Class files installed created 6/06 but I deleted all AV system a long time ago??

All of the Downloaded Program Files on my WinXP were listed as "damaged". So... I went off road and just simply deleted the file...the Downloaded Programs File, not each seperate file, as I had some type of error when I tried to do so, I believe something about the file was being used somewhere else, to close everything and try again, but would not delete no matter what I closed down.

Now, go figure, there is no longer a Downloaded Program File on the system.

My question is...does this return when there are new files that are downloaded for use? Or???? This is sounding more and more like an X-Files case...should have not cancelled the show!

Thanx for your time and help!! Hopefully I will get it some day!!

I have "Damaged" downloaded program files, all of them at this status. What the heck could cause this? And what are these files in the first place? I have copied them prior to this damaged thing, on floppy disks. Do not know what the heck to do with the copies, but have them.
1-What are these "downloaded program files" and what do they mean to me, my system?
2-What could have caused them all to show as "damaged" in the status of each file? How do I figure out what caused this so it does not repeat itself? (had only 1 prob that day, with install of Microsoft updates?). Really think I should find out if I did something naughty that system did not approve of, so I can apologize to it and fix it up so it is happy with me again.
3-How do I use the copies of these files, if I need to, and do the "out with the old, in with the new" dance...how do I install the new files back into the system and get the damaged ones out?
Thanx for you help, again...have a great day!!

A:Damaged Downloaded Program Files?? What's this all about??

Downloaded program files are ActiveX controls and Java programs that are downloaded automatically from the Internet when viewing certain pages. They are temporarily stored in the Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk.

These can include perfectly legitimate applications, like Macromedia Flash player, Quicktime player, the Google toolbar installer, and the like, but also spyware.

The best way to view them is as follows:

Go to Internet Options > Temp Internet Files > Settings > Show Objects.

If any of them are damaged, right click them, and choose Remove from the context menu.

You'll just be prompted to download them again whenever Windows or an application needs them.

Cheers,

Hello,
While searching for programs/files to remove that I no longer use I opened my downloaded Programs file and found "Adult Links". (Yes my husband visits those sites) Anyhow, when I try to remove it, a box comes up with the following: "These program files are currently being used by one or more programs. Please close some programs and try again. You may have to restart Windows" I closed all programs except "Explorer and systray" and restarted, but it just won't go away. I've been trying for a couple of weeks now. Also if someone knows how to remove it, could there possibly be a way to block it from coming back?

I'd really appreciate any and all suggestions.
Thank you

Hi, I am still having a problem trying to get rid of a file dealing with Dialer.one0none. The only time this shows up is when running Norton Anti Virus scan, as being in c:/windows/downloaded program files\109554.exe. I cannot delete it using NAV. When searching for this file, it is no where to be found.
My question is this, Can I delete the entire contents of the c:/windows/downloaded program files? Maybe this would get rid of it.
I am running Windows XP Home ed. I am on cable and do not have my phone connected to the computer. There don't seem to be any problems other than this keeps coming up on my virus scan as a threat and when I try to delete it, it fails. I have tried the Safe Mode way, also have submitted a HJT Log earlier. I just need to know if the c:/windows/downloaded program files is needed. Thanks for your help. Roger

Go to Default Programs in Control Panel open it, select Set your Default Programs. First off you need to know the extension of this file you do not want any program to open, example, jpeg, gif..etc.. Select each program that can open this file and uncheck that extension for it, then would be back to unknown.

I have enabled file sharing on my home network so that my wife's XP machine can access photos and music stored on my Vista Home Premium box. Also share printers.

I have set up non-password protected sharing, and it works fine overall - I can see everything she shares, and vice versa, printers work, etc.

The only problem we're having is the photos. Whenever I add new photos they don't show up until I re-share the folder. If I put new photos in a sub-folder, the sub-folder is visible and can be opened without errors, but it appears empty until I re-share the entire photo folder.

I cannot find any information about this problem, but it just occurred to me that I gave the guest account read-only access to the photo folder instead of full permissions. I guess that's one thing to try when I get home, but I would like to keep it read-only so that nothing happens to the pictures accidentally.

Any other suggestions?

this is vistas own protection, since you are adding the files at a later date, the files and folders are shared individually, so even if you add the photos to a shared folder, the photos wont be shared as they werent included when you shared the folder initially, just right click the new folder and just share that folder, you are just adding the folder then and all its contents to the shared network.

I understand the process of how to remove downloaded Active X controls using the Disk Cleanup Utility.

My question is, exactly how many versions of the same Active X control do I need to keep?

For example, I have 3 Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0 controls showing in the list.
Two of them were installed on 07-28-2010 and are both for updates. They appear to be the same kind of control as each other.

The third is called "Classic Java plug in for Netscape and ..?' which I don't know where that came from....if it was an option in an update, I didn't choose it. I wouldn't choose that because I don't have/use Netscape. It was installed on 2-2-2011.

Can I remove the classic plug in for Netscape and one of the other update controls?

Thanks!
p.s.....I am utilizing your suggestion page about "Slow Computers/browser ..check here first". this is where my question originates from. I run XP Professional Service Pack 3.

Hey everybody

I'm not sure if the title is a good description, but what I need is a program, that will allow us to make audio presentations that we can put on the web.

It would have like exciting background music, applause, sound effects, stuff like that. It would be where we could record on the microphone the top agents of the week also. Are there any good programs that can do this?

Thanks.

Do you mean kill the program if it's running and restart it, or check if it's running and start it if it isn't?
Does the program have a unique Image Name that shows up on the Processes tab in Task Manager?

Im downlaoding a file splitted to a bunch of RAR archives (350 MB each) and the uploader included a .CRC file for each archive of them.

I know i can test the archives using Winrar itself but i didnt finish downloading them so i always get: Volume Absent & File Corrupted

So i kinda figured out that i might use each .CRC file to verify the archive related alone, but the question is HOW TO DO IT? Already tried qsfv but not working. Thanks in advance

I followed some internet advice recently to get my computer working faster. Is a compact pressario, Pentium 4 with 1.0 GB RAM. Apart from being a little slow it was working fine before that.

I ran msconfig to disable non essential services on startup
I ran prefetch and deleted all the files in that folder
I ran services.msc and changed some of the services to disabled or manual

On restart the computer took ages to reboot. All desktop icons eventually came on but the taskabar-startbutton-system tray was missing. I eventually managed to get this on by clicking on properties and toggling autohide, but i have to do this everytime and whats more the taskbar does not show me which windows are open.

I tried changing everything back to their original settings. One frustrating thing is that services.msc wont let me change stuff anymore. clicking on any of the services does nothing (no response to clicks)

I tried system restore from safe mode to change to last good settings but no dice. there is no taskbar visible in safe mode either.
can someone please please help me?
thanks

I am on a Dell Inspiron running Win7. I recently moved my Acrobat Pro to this laptop and I wanted to use Acrobat as the default pdf printer and reader. The laptop came with MS XPS Document Writer and XPS Viewer as defaults.

To start, I right-clicked the file and selected "open with" and chose Adobe. I checked the "always use the selected program" option. The Adobe Reader window opened and I got this error message:

Adobe Reader could not open ***.pdf.downloading because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

Note the file name now has both a .pdf extension and a .downloading extension. When I look in My Documents, File Type for about 70% of more than 27,000 files now says DOWNLOADING file and the files all have this extra extension. It seems to have impacted pdf files and doc files. None of them will open. I tried to open one of the doc files with WordPad and it just brings up a blank page.

Now when I right-click and choose "Open with," I only get three options - Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat or WordPad. I've tried to find the application for XPS in Program Files to see if opening with that and changing the default back to that would help but I can't find the application anywhere.

When you say you moved Acrobat Pro I assume you mean you did a normal install on the laptop. If you remove the .downloading extension (any.pdf.downloading to any.pdf), can you open the file? I had a few problems, which I hope have been resolved, but I still have two downloaded files which say they are damaged.

In XP using IE, Tools -> Internet Options -> Settings -> View Objects
the following files have the status "damaged:"

Async Downloader Class
cpbrkpie Control

A. Do I fix them? Delete them? Ignore this?
B. What is the likely cause of this? Virus? Worm? Spyware?

When attempting to load a second virus software, the following file was deleted from my Temp Internet Files: C:\Documents&Settings\my name\localSettings\temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ECJHRSQ9 motiveSB.exe
Was this something sinister? It seems to have fixed everything except my mouse (2 of the 5 buttons don't operate as programmed and I'm having no luck finding new drivers for it).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi tonedef -

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

What version of Office are you trying to install (e.g, 2003 or 2007)?

Have you changed any file permission settings or "Taken Ownership" of any folders/files?

The "scan disk" that you mentioned running... was it "sfc /scannow"? If not, click on START | type cmd.exe in the Start Search box | right-click on cmd.exe | select Run as Admin

In the screen that comes up type the following:

sfc /scannow (space after sfc) - press ENTER

Let this run. Try Office re-install.

Good Luck. . .

I had  pre-installed manufacturer WIN 8 software on my computer.  I made recovery disks.  (you are only allowed one copy)  I think I made a mistake in upgrading to the 8.1 version.  I thought it was just an update.  I didn't realize it was going to be so involved.  If my computer fails to start, I don't know if I should make just a recovery disk, or if I can get a COPY of the WIN8.1 version.  It said once you go to 8.1, you can't go back.  I didn't like that.  Can anyone tell me more about what single copy I can make, and how to do it?  If you make a copy to a flash drive, and it fails, you are up a creek.  So I would rather have a dvd copy.  But just for if WIN 8.1 won't start, a bootable pen drive would be nice.  But once again, it said only one copy.  This is confusing to me.  I don't have an external hard drive, or anything to make a full back up on yet.  I do have my pictures, and documents saved to a pen drive though.

A:Just downloaded 8.1 have questions on making copy

You are only allowed one copy per license, not one image per media that you create (ie you can have a copy on a Blu-Ray, DVD, USB drive, Pen Drive).  As for what to do if your hard drive goes South, you can contact your computer manufacturer, and order a copy of 8.1 for that model of computer, or reinstall 8, then download the 8.1 iso from Microsoft, and save the .iso to a DVD, so you can reinstall 8.1 after installing 8 back on your hard drive.

Of course there is always making a image of the hard drive and making a boot disc, to restore that image also.

Hello. Today I downloaded a video that had been converted online into WMV, and when I played it in the Media Player, it wasn't what I wanted, so I deleted it from its source file. However, now it's staying listed in that Now Playing List to the right of the main Library, and sometimes, when I go to open the player, I can't even get it onto the Library screen in the first place because it freezes up trying to load the first Now Playing video screen, with that darn video. And I managed to righ-click it in the Now Playing list and click Remove from List, and it was gone, but I opened it other times after and it's still there! I'm not certain that it is the cause of the freezing, but it may be.

I have tried repeatedly to reinstall Act! by Sage 2009 and I get an error message that says the program recognizes a previous version of Act and it requires that I exit the installation and remove all previous versions. I was able to unistall Act! using the uninstall programs option. However, Act files remained in the Program Files. When I try to remove the ACT file in Program Files it will not allow me to because it says the file is open in Windows Explorer. I tried opening Windows Explorer to try to locate the file and close it but I could not locate any Act files. I tried disabling windows explorer and it removed all icons from my desktop and I couldn't access any drop down/ pull up menus so I didn't know how to proceed. I need to unlock file sharing between 2 computers on a network to 1 Program File folder. They are both running vista32. I have searched all night with no luck and only hope that someone here has an answer. This is for a flight simulation game that can use another computer to run a few separate programs that add features to the game. People are not reporting problems while using XP. So I know this can be done, the question lies with Vista and is capabilities. I have share my whole C drive then program files then the folder that I need to be able to get into, but when I try to access the folder from my secondary computer it lets me know that access is denied. I can access pretty much any other folder on the computer other than program files. Any help??

Thanks!

A:Unlocking file sharing for Program Files

Hi Twig1983. . .

I don't believe it is possible to share the entire c: drive or the entire Program Files folder in Vista because of sub-folders/files in each of which you (the user name you logged on with) are not the owner of, not to mention files within each whose attributes are system and/or hidden. The "<access denied>" screen that came up is a product of Vista's User Access Control (UAC).

However, there are usually ways around any rule.

A few questions first, please. . .

1. Are these PC's XP-> Vista upgrades, or new Vista installations?

2. When you elected the share, were you logged on with an admin account?

3. Is the admin account that you use one that was set up at the time of the Vista installation?

4. Is the user account on PC#2 an admin account or a standard user account (that you are using and get <access denied>)?

5. Do you get the <access denied> message simply trying to read the folder/file from PC#2? What about during program execution?

6. Prior to the <access denied> message, is there a UAC prompt?

7. Yes >> Does it ask for a password, or can you simply select "Continue"?

8. Are you sure that it is the Program Files folder you are failing on or could it be the ProgramData folder (which the Program Files folder uses for most of its non source-code data under Vista)?

9. Have you looked at the Event Viewer?

10. Is it necessary to elect to share the entire c: drive and ... Read more

Most likely you opened the pdf with reader - when you close reader it does not really close and retains the pdf files..

If you open task manager you will see that reader is still a running process - even though it is closed..

All the metro apps seem to do the same thing - you close and the process stays open.

Was able to get them to appear by checking view hidden file icons in the folder options section of My Computer. However all the icons are now light in color compared to new file icons that have been created since. the light color makes me thjink they are still somehow tagged as hidden files.

Also when I go to Start > My Programs, it is all empty and none of the programs that were previously listed are there any longer.

How do I edit a file in the ProgramFiles(x86) directory?

There is a .xml configuration file which is supposed to be editable to configure the app the way I want it (that's why it's called configuration file, MS!). Here's the file tree: C:\Program Files (x86)\TeXnicCenter\packages\math.xml.

I can make changes in Notepad, but cannot save anything back to this directory. I am the sole user and administrator of my system (see the pic?), so I should be allowed to do whatever the heck I wanna do! It is a Win7 Ultimate (x64).

How do I edit this file? Thanks

Question 2 (this one is really rhetorical-venting): Why-oh-why would MS keep me from editing my files in my directories on my personal computer? It's mine! (Did you notice that pattern?)

P.S. - I have no idea what the correct subforum for this question is (since I never expected to have to ask such an inane question). I'm sorry if it's in the wrong place (feel free to move it and scold me appropriately ).

A:How do I edit a file in Program Files tree?

You forgot an option in your poll for "No, and I'm glad it is this way, especially since other major OSes have been this well protected for years".

For the record, I have no trouble going into my Program Files directories and making changes to files. I just have no need to do so. Sounds like you have some permissions issues, or your UAC settings moved to be too strict.

Our sys admin gave me administrative rights on this PC. I can install applications, see system files, etc. So I'm wondering why this problem?

A:Have admin rights but can't create new file in Program Files (x86)

Because only the SYSTEM is allowed to create files in there. (Through the installer)

You can however go to the folder you want to hand create files in and open the settings/security and go to your user and add full permissions. You can then create files by hand in that folder.

Since I'm running XP-SP3 this looks like the most appropriate forum category for this help request.

Issue:
Like many people I have thousands of data and image files spread out over several hard drives.

I would like to organize these files so I can find what I want when I need it without doing massive Google Desktop searches that don't even get close to narrowing down what I'm looking for without going through pages and pages of possibilities. Using the advanced search features helps some but not enough.

Example:
I work with a lot of Photoshop files. So I have .psd files saved in directory folders for a specific project. I know I should use some kind of file naming structure but most .psd files have ended up being named something project oriented. While that is great for that project, if a say 6 months later I want to find a .psd image for a different project that I know I have on one of my hard drives "Somewhere" . . . the search is on.

The resulting search adventure results in not being able to find the file I'm looking for under what ever search terms I use and I end up taking the time to create a whole new graphic

After creating a whole new graphic, I maybe find the file I was looking for and basically end up kicking myself for not organizing files.

Request:
Recommended File Management software that will allow me to find all .psd files (For example) and either copy them or in some cases move them to a master file folder for all related... Read more

We have a Windows XP (Service Pack 2) that sorts the files according to date (rather than name as usually), when the user is in the Open File dialogue of any program (Adobe Creative Suite products, Microsoft Office programs etc.). The user can re-sort the files by clicking the sorting buttons in the dialogue window, but doing so every time we open a file feels a bit boring.

In Windows Explorer the folders are sorted aplhabetically, so the explanation cannot be that it fetches the sorting priority from the settings of Windows Explorer.

Any ideas how to fix the problem?

I had a HDD in an external enclosure. Something got messed up (I think it was disconnected by accident during a file transfer) and now when I plug it in, the drive is recognized in "My Computer" and disk management but it says that the drive is not formatted and asks me if I want to format it. I had data on it that wasn't backed up (Doh!) so I plugged it into one of my computers and tried a couple of recovery programs. I was able to recover most of my files but it seems the recovery programs can't get the original file names. (It names the files recoveredfile01.pdf, recoveredfile02.doc etc.) Since it would take me hours to rename every file I am trying to find a way to recover the names too. Anyone know of any programs/methods that would do this? Obviously the files are still there... I would assume the names are there somewhere also. For your information: I am running Windows XP Pro and the HDD was formatted in FAT32. Thanks for your help!

I used to see file editors back in the early days and never was able to handle them due to arcane
help files, TMI and other problems associated with pedantry in lingo.

Soon I will need to edit my HD of duplicates and no longer- needed items.

Please don't mention the "ability" to hold down the control key and make a box and delete what's inside.

No, what I need is something along the line of a wildcard delete such as delete myfile*.*

Is there anything like that in Win7 freeware? Something with a bit more control than
a screen full of highlighted things or the opposite: clicking each and every item, delete and confirm?

A:A file editing routine in Win7 or a program to deal with bulk files

Your title says "file editing". Your text refers to deleting.

Are you talking about identifying duplicate files and deleting the duplicates, so that you have only 1 version?

Are you referring only to files that have the same exact name, regardless of content? Or do you mean files with the same content, regardless of name?

Text files? Pictures? What file extensions generally?

You can do a lot from the command line using switches and wild cards.

There are good duplicate file finder applications. And the "Everything" search engine is great for finding files with identical names.

I bought Easy Hi Qrecorder program a few years ago. It worked fine. I had to re-download to a new computer as the other had crashed.

I use XP home edition. The Easy Hi Q recorder is reputable, from Roemer Software. I redownloaded it to the next computer which had been recently cleaned out of my son's user account and all his programs and files.

The Easy Hi Q downloads fine and installs. But when I click on the execute file to start it, I get "DWGTrueView 2010 wanting to install instead, which was part of an Autocad program my son had, for mapping. I can't seem to get rid of this mix up. Then of course it can't find the "source" file from that autocad program since it has been deleted for months. I also tried a clean disk and defragmented after deleting all my sons files.
I just want my Easy Hi Q recorder to work properly and open up.

I just tried an XP repair using the XP disk. Still no change. And it took all afternoon to do this.

I used it to backup my computer when switching from xp to 7 and ever since then i can not see the files even though when i go to the properties it still says the space is used. (its 1T and amount used but invisible ~2gb) The rest is empty. How do i get these files visable again? I tried searching for hidden files and it didnt work either.

I have tons of important pictures, videos, and documents and need to get them back. Im hoping not to have to do an expensive data recovery service.

So the drive shows up fine in Windows explorer or My Computer but you see no files at all? That's pretty strange. You could always try one of the free recovery programs like Recuva to see if anything shows up.

I have a program for which I need to save project data within its Program Files location in order for it to be displayed in the program.

I can drag-drop files into that folder, load the program and see the files where they should be ...but then when I go to that folder through Windows Explorer, it appears empty

or, rather, it isn't empty (I added a whole library of files a week ago), but anything I've added recently doesn't appear.

what on earth is going on?! is there some special 'hidden' default protection on Program Files contents? I can't find any setting for that folder that is unique and would explain this behavior.

A:files not visible in Explorer...

Hi, Lykho.

I am guessing it might have something to do with permissions. By design, the Program Files folders are meant for storing installed programs. User stuff (project data, documents you create, files you download, so on) are meant to go in your user folder (Documents, Downloads, Music...).

What happens if the program is installed in a folder created in your user folder or a folder created in Libraries?

Hello.

My problem is that yesterday I installed windows 7 and I forgot to install anti virus for a while...

I only used malwarebytes anti-malware and after every search it found another virus, (may be false positive but I deleted anyway). I just looked around my HDD for some files when I noticed they were missing... So I thought "great, the virus deleted them". Then I watched how many GB it had deleted... The answer was 0. My first thought was that the foolish virus had only hidden them, and so I selected all folders in the entire drive and unchecked the "hidden box". The problem was that the folders and files that were missing didnt reappear but only the usual hidden files that use to be in folders hidden... any ideas? They are highly welcome ...

this might be a piece of cake to some and I may look as a fool in the end but I have absolutly no idea what to do...

Is there a 'hidden to others' feature that may have been selected that I am not aware of? This is an odd one for me.

When I have the dwg file open, the .dwl file is visible to all, but not the dwg.

Update, I copied the dwg file one level up in the directory and the file was visible to everyone. I then copied it back into the folder it needed to be in, replacing the original, and now it's visible to all.

Hi friends, my o/s is windows 7 x86. Previously I had created three backups on different dates for restoring back in case of need. Today, when I wanted to restore my computer to an earlier date through " Backup & Restore" only latest image is available and the two earlier ones are missing.

Though in " Manage your space" the other two are also visible. In the partition of my hard disc where images are stored, only latest one is available. As I never deleted them, I wonder where they have gone?

Please help and thanks.

To restore your PC from a System Image you must boot from a System Repair Disc. All existing system images should then be available.

If data is burnt on either DVD or CD (+R or +RW discs of different manufacturer) and then re-inserted into my Sat Pro M40 PC it can only see folder names but it cannot see any files in the folder. When you click onto the folders it states that they are Empty!

When the same discs are inserted into other devices (onto DVD drives connected to a TV) the folders show the files and the files open without a problem.

Sometimes the same disc when re-inserted into the pc, cannot be detected as drive is invalid

Audio and Video discs are no problem and open immediately.

I am at a loss because although I have backed up all my data I cannot re-insert the data if I loose it.

A:Satellite Pro M40: Files on DVD/CD not visible

Hi

There are different reasons why you CD/DVD drive doesn?t handle the burned CDs.
First of all not all CDs or DVDs are compatible.
I had a lot of issues with my burned mediums? sometimes the drive was able to read it, sometimes it was not possible.

I have changed the burning speed to a lower level and this has improved the situation a little bit. I changed also burning software.
Now I use the Nero burning Rom software. It?s really good program.

But the main reason for such issues is the drives laser lens malfunction. After a long time of working the lens cannot calibrate properly and therefore cannot handle the inserted medias? in this case only a drive replacement helps.

Hi there,

I have this strange problem with my new laptop with Windows 8!!!

I backed up everything from my old laptop to a new one which included many software that I downloaded of the internet and collected otherwise.

All exe files were gone from my laptop and when I searched for "*.exe", I noticed they were found and they were showing as if they are in the folders where they belong but they are not visible in the folder. Further, I cannot click and run any of these exe files!!!

Any help would be great! If you need further information please let me know.

Thanks a lot!

Sounds like it hid the files. I'm assuming the installation files (typically stored in the downloads folder) are the ones you're having issues with. Where did you put those files? Also, when you double click the files, what happens? Do you get an error message?

I have a "server" (actually just another workstation with a big disk) running Vista. I access files on it over the network from my notebook running W7. I have a directory on the server where I can see, open and edit all but one file - that one file seems invisible from the notebook. The permissions of the files in this directory seem identical. If I make a copy of the invisible file on the server, the copy is visible, but the original is not. If I rename the original file to something else, then rename the copy to the name of the original, then the file that's invisible is the one with the original name, not the original file. This suggests that its the name that's the problem, not some other property of the file. If I try to rename the copy that I can see to the original name using the notebook, I get a message: "This operation can only be performed when you are connected to the network". This is very odd, because I am connected to the network (evidence the fact that when I create a copy on the sever, it's visible from the notebook). If I make sure that I'm not trying to rename the file to a name that already exists on the server (even though I can't see it from the notebook) it makes no difference - I still get the error message.

This is driving me nuts - what's going on?

By the way, the troublesome file is named OrganGEMA.h.svn-base - I have files elsewhere on the server that are called the exact same thing and they don't cause this problem - it's j... Read more

Hi,

In Internet Explorer, when I look at:
Tools->Internet Options->General Tab, Browsing History, Settings->View Objects
a window pops up titled C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files. I came across this while trying to resolve another problem....which will be in another post and has nothing to do with this post.

The status of one of the files is "Damaged" and I have no idea if it should be deleted and reinstalled or deleted and not reinstalled, or just left alone. It also states the install date was on 4/29/05 (which would be before I purchased this HP Pavilion laptop--I purchased it after September 2005). The last access date for the program states today, 12/7/07.
Here is the program file description:
{49232000-16E4-426C-A231-62846947304B}
Under Properties is the following info:
ActiveX Control
80KB
Status: Damaged
Code Base: http://ipgweb.cce.hp.com/rdqnbk/downloads/sysinfo.cab

Would this damaged program be affecting the performance of my laptop? Since it's been installed since I've owned it, I wouldn't know if the performance is slower than it should be or not, or why the laptop is accessing a damaged file (and what happens when it does access this damaged file???)

Any info would be greatly appreciated....
