I'm running win7 Home Premium and just got a new hard drive.

I've been using Norton Anti-virus (from centurylink) and comodo firewall in the past. However, CL's site for downloading the anti-virus program is down (has been for 24 hours) and comodo's firewall now comes with defense + that conflicts with Norton and even though turned off not sure if that's good enough + it now pops up, even in safe setting on the firewall and I don't know enough what to ok and what to block - it didn't used to have the defense+ with the fire wall or popups under safe.

Since my main computer just got a new hard drive and I can't use until I find the right security for it & I was looking for suggestions.

I'm low income so want to use safe free programs and any other suggestions to include would be fine (I usually install free sandboxie, malwarebytes, peerblock, spywareblaster, did have ccleaner but heard conflicted with a program, had winpatrol but heard it conflicts with other programs, had Spybot Search & Destroy- but heard it conflicted with programs I had, I had DNS through comodo, ff with cookies monster, better privacy, ghostery, wot, adblocker+,linkextend, flagfox, noscript, FEBE, & redirect remover, used to have mvphosts - but caused some problems.

So would appreciate suggestions on free anti-viral, free firewall and any other security suggestions to run a safer computer.

Thank you.

A:best free firewall and antiviral combo

The best way to protect yourself is to devote an hour or two a day to keep abreast of the latest security news so that you can stay one step ahead of malicious attackers most of the time. I recommend the following sites for that purpose: Heisse SecurityInternet Storm CenterKrebsOnSecurityAs regards free security apps, all the big names offer adequate protection, but users don't bother to read the instructions and therefore don't configure them properly and that's the main reason they pick up viruses, trojans and other malware. Either AVAST or Avira are excellent, but the latter has constant nag screens which is the main reason I prefer Avast. The Comodo firewall is good too, but again, read the instructions to configure it properly. Malwarebytes is the last one I'd recommend, but you do have to manually update the freebie version.

A:BitDefender Antivirus Free vs Avast Antivirus Free vs Avira Antivirus Free

Resource Usage (eg: CPU, RAM): draw, with the indication of Avira, since BitDefender takes overall a little bit less of CPU time, but consumes much more RAM.
Level of Protection and Features (eg: Antivirus , Firewall, Behavior Blocker): Avira has more features, configuration options and is generally more effective when it comes to the malware detection (Proactive and Reactive).
Overall Winner: Avira.
Edit: I've just noticed, that you've added Avast - as the third contestant - to BitDefender and Avira. Still Avira is the winner here. Avast is not too hungry for PC resources and perhaps has more features, but its engine is not so good, and its detection ratio usually lags behind both: BitDefender and Avira.

Hello everyone,

I am hoping someone can please help me with the following...

My current security setup is...

AVG free anti-virus
Windows Defender anti-spyware
Zone Alarm free firewall version 6.5.737.000
Cyberhawk http://www.novatix.com/cyberhawk/
Firefox browser with no-script extension
Sandboxie

I also do periodic scans with AVG anti-spyware free (real time disabled), spybot search and destroy, lavasoft adaware, a-squared, and bitdefender online scan.

My current setup is working fine, but recently when I tried to upgrade Zone Alarm free, it caused my computer to crash and restart so I had to go back to version 6.5.737.000 which always worked great. I have also read reviews that the most recent version of ZA is also causing crashes. Additionally, ZA free is now about a 38 MB download which takes some time to download on a 56 k dial up connection.

I like to keep my security software updated, but do I really need to update to the most recent version of ZA ? If not now, then when ?

I have been thinking of trying the free Comodo firewall as it seems to have good reviews, although I heard that the company was previously affiliated with a spyware company. I heard similar rumors about the company behind spywareterminator previously being affiliiated with spyware.

Is comodo 2.4.18.184 a better choice than ZA free ? The upcoming release of comodo (version 3.0) is supposed to have HIPS, so as long as it does not conflict with cyberhawk, I guess I should be OK, or I can do ... Read more

A:My current security combo & Comodo Versus ZA free Firewall

I am currently in a similar position to you, although I got there in a different way!

I was using Win 98 quite happily and had NOD32 and ZA Pro (one of the 6.0 series because it was the last one that worked with '98 and, like you, I had read a lot of stuff about the problems some people were having with the 7.0 series). My 98 computer suffered a terminal crash (due to an error of mine!) and so I now have XP Home. I have made several attempts to get a new d/l of ZAP but without success, probably because my anti-spyware sub expired during the period I was 'offline'.

Like you I was appalled at the prospect of a 38MB d/l for the free version on dialup so I got Comodo. It's too early to make a judgement about whether Comodo is better, worse or just different to ZA, because I'm still very much in the learning process with it. Perhaps a long term Comodo user will respond and give us some feedback?

I have a D-Link firewall router and am presently using the Xp SP2 firewall but will turn it off when I install a 3rd party item. The Zone Alarm 5.5 used to lock up, drop the connection, crash and all kinds of other bad things. I ditched it. Does the 6.0 version do the same ?

I have heard good things about Sygate, Kerio and a few others.

What are your recommendations, experiences ?
By the way, Please just give me your take and no links to sites or threads, I have read a lot of them already and no review mentioned the ubiquitous and often-mentioned zone alarm bugs. So I am really looking for your opinions from using a firewall for a while.

Hi, I have been using free versions of AVG antivirus and Zone Alarm firewall for some time now and, possibly by good fortune, have had no problems whatsoever with any nasty things that can come to you in today's online environment however recently I have noticed a noticeable slowing in performance of the network (I have 2 desktops and 3 laptops on a home network, 1 -wired and the others wireless). I regularly run scans of AVG and MalwareBytes on them all but was wondering if any of these packages could actually be using a lot of my network resource just by working in the background and if anyone could suggest alternatives ?

A:Best free antivirus/ firewall

Hi,

AVG led the way in free anti-virus software, but have unfortunately in recent times not been as well regarded as they used to be. Malwarebytes is an excellent product with low resource usage.

I recommend uninstalling AVG and trying Microsoft Security Essentials. Give it a try and see if it improves your network performance.

I would also turn on Windows Firewall.

Golden

I've used to use Kaspersky Internet Suite 6 before, and I just found it totally amazing, the best all-in-one security program I need, unfortunately I cant pay for it anymore.. so I'm looking around for something new.

I've tried Zonealarm + Avast! but they just didn't work well at all. Right now I'm using comodo as my firewall and NOD32 as antivirus.

With comodo, I feel that sometimes its not giving me the proper protection, I donno it's just a feeling that the default network monitor settings don't secure me. I had to manually turn off ports 135, 445, 139, 69, 4444 because of a crash I would have pretty often and after hours of research on the net.

The problem I have with NOD32 isn't security, its more of resources. Everyone says that NOD32 uses the least amount of resources, but right now EKRN is at 27,704k mem usage. That in itself isn't so bad, but the problem is when I browse online, or download torrents, the CPU usage just shoots up. I trolled the forums a bit and disabled web access protection and http filter but it still takes up alot of CPU when firefox is open and browsing.

Any suggestions?

Firewall:
I'll be honest, I have no idea what free software is even out there these days for free firewalls.

Antivirus:
To my knowledge, AVG is as good as it gets for free virus software.

Spyware:
Ad-aware? Spybot? Is this bundled into AVG/other antivirus software now?

Thanks for the input.

I use a third-party firewall that allows full control.

But some of my friends use the firewall built in to Window 7. To each their own.

I've taken a look at that firewall, and it's actually fairly flexible.

It has quite of bit of incoming traffic blocked by default, but leaves outgoing traffic wide open. I want to help them restrict outgoing traffic on their systems.

Many of them use Avira's free antivirus. I would like to configure their Windows 7 firewall (aka Windows Firewall with Advanced Security) to work with Avira, while still blocking as much outgoing traffic as possible for them.

Blocking all outgoing traffic with the Windows firewall is trivial, but I haven't found any documentation on Avira's site on how they recommend configuring the Windows 7 firewall to work with their product (perhaps because they want you to buy their pro version that has a firewall, but as of this post, their pro firewall does not even support IPv6!).

So before I reinvent the wheel and figure it out myself, has anyone already set up the Windows 7 firewall's outgoing traffic rules to work properly with Avira free antivirus (that is, not break it or impair its functionality in any way)?

Also, interestingly, I see no Incoming Rules for the Windows 7 firewall for Avira on their systems. How is this possible given that they regularly get program and definition updates?

My computer recently received the gift of this virus:AntiVirus Soft: http://www.precisesecurity.com/rogue/antivirus-soft/Luckily my twin sister's boyfriend has a degree in Computer security so he ran ComboFix and gave me a few things to download.Prior to the attack I had Spyware Doctor, Malware Bytes, and AVG 9.0 installed and I ran them every few days.AntiVirus Soft made me unable to open any of these and tried to prompt me to buy a new antivirus. Needless to say, I didn't.So after my computer was somewhat fixed, I installed COMODO Internet Security as well as Microsoft Security Essentials. They are both running at startup and it takes forever for Firefox to open (1-3+ minutes) and everything lags more than before the virus. After the huge fiasco was over I scanned my computer with Microsoft Security Essentials and it came up with this:Exploit:Java/CVE-2008-5353.CTrojan:Java/Selace.MIt removed these items.I then scanned with Malware Bytes and it came up clean.Still, my computer lags way more and I can't re-install Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9 (which wouldn't open so I removed it) because of a 1311 Data1.cab error. It also won't let me open Frostwire and prompts something about quarantines or firewalls when I try to.I now have both COMODO and Microsoft Security Essentials running at start up. A:Which free antivirus/firewall/antispyware scanner is best?

Personally, I would recommend using either Avira AntiVir Free/Personal edition or avast! for an antivirus program, just be sure that you only have 1 anti-virus program installed on your machineFor a firewall I would recommend Comodo, please note that the Comodo firewall installation also includes an Anti-virus program, if you decide to choose another anti-virus (not Comodo), then please be sure to only install the firewall, you will be prompted during installation if you want to install just the firewall, or the firewall and the anti-virus.The on-demand anti-malware scanners I recommend are Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAnti-Spyware.For additional protection, SpywareBlaster is a great program to protect you from visiting malicious sites, and blocking tracking cookies. Note that SpywareBlaster isn't an actively running program. You download it, run it once, and then make sure you update it every week or 2 and you will always be protected. It works by tweaking some IE and Firefox settings to block tracking cookies and provide additional protection.

I've previously used Avast free antivirus with ZoneAlarm firewall and also with Comodo firewall. I'm currently using Norton Internet Security but was thinking about switching to Avast free antivirus & using the Windows 7 firewall. But I was looking on the Avast forum & it appears people are having a problem with that combination.

I've read through a lot of the threads on this here forum & am left with mixed thoughts. There seems to be some problems & some people are switching from Avast 8 back to Avast 7, or to the latest version of Avast 8 which I have not seen any comments on. And of course some people are not having any problems.

Is there a consensus of opinion on which version of Avast free to use with Win7 Firewall?
If it version 7, where can I download a copy from?

A:Avast free antivirus + Win7 firewall ?

Hi Mike99,

I'm using the latest Avast 8 version with Outpost FW Pro (latest version 8) without any trouble even though they are not compatible. Outpost program files are added to Avast exclusion list.
Both of the above try to do the same thing but I don't allow it.
Outpost FW has 'Web Control' and 'Antispyware' but I don't use them. Avast handles Spyware for me.
Avast has browser plug ins, I don't use them. I use Opendns.
I also use Winpatrol free + WOT in Firefox 19.0.2

Suggestions, advice, and/or information needed for a good free anti-virus and personal firewall. "Free" meaning . . . free installation and free updates.

I have heard about Avast!, AVG, Zone Alarm, and Sygate. Are there other free anti-virus and personal firewall that may be much better than these?

1. Which is the better anti-virus: Avast! or AVG?
2. Which is the better personal firewall: Zone Alarm or Sygate?

Would appreciate personal experiences and/or links to websites (unless this forum prohibits such information from being shared), which may address my concerns and where I may be able to download the recommended anti-virus and personal firewall.

As additional information, I have 3 PCs at home with 3 different OS, where I plan to use the free anti-virus and personal firewall.
1. Windows XP Professional Edition
2. Windows 98 SE
3. Windows 2000

Although all PCs have DSL connections to surf the internet, there are times I use dial-up connections. The PCs have LAN cards, but I have not networked them . . . though I plan to do that later on, once I learn how to do it.

I use the PCs on the internet primarily to email and to search for information. I hardly use the PCs for network gaming.

Thanks!

Should I keep it?
So far it's lighter than WD and Baidu.
The two of which let malware slip in and destroy an install of Windows before I could react. And so far every firewall test I've ran has been superb vs. Windows Firewall.

I'm not all too worried about HTTP scanning or "the cloud" either. Since if need be I can just use Traffic Light or Avira Browser Safety in combination with Adguard. (I made the jump to chrome) just that it has better protection then Baidu or MSE/WD and will block something if it gets passed my browser be it on-access or when I run a scan.

I'm also curious because many testers elsewhere have given the Pro version which only adds 4 functions I really don't think there's much need for (at least in my usage case. I've only ever gotten infected from malvertisements) really high (on par with BD and the like, higher than AVG and Avira). (Score of 99%).

i would not use the av module. the firewall is fine but the av is realy mediumcore/bad. low detection rate and not up to date kasperskys signatures. if u get infected with top avs than its not the av fault, maybe u should learn abit what to install and what to click on the internet. i would uninstall zonealarm av/firewall and would go with something like Panda, avast, qihoo, avg or avira. all nice fee avs with decent protection. if u want a firewall u can try out comodo firewall, private firewall or online armor. all have hips modules so u will get pupops and need to understand them.

I have always used Avast and Comodo as my AV/Firewall combination. I find it to be very useful, and although Comodo provides many annoying popups, they are useful and informational (I would consider myself a competent computer user, though no expert).

Recently, I just wanted to see how good my combination was and if there was a better one. I found topics that said of how Avast's web shield completely bypasssed Comodo's rules. I tested this:

1) Block chrome.exe in Comodo completely
2) Check that both Comodo and Avast are updated, and Avast web shield ON
3) Open Chrome and see what happens

Results: At first I thought it was fine, google.com was blocked. Then I tried clicking on bookmarks. yahoo.com would open, youtube.com would open, etc. I was shocked to find that Comodo was letting these websites open even though chrome.exe was blocked!

After doing some more research, and realizing that this was a big problem, and that many solutions did not work, with avast being blamed or comodo being outdated, or even that Win 7 64 bit was limiting comodo, I tested it again with web shield OFF.

I repeated the process of blocking chrome and opened google.com and other websites. This time all the websites were blocked!

Is there a solution where I can keep web shield on and have comodo be effective in blocking? Or do I need a new firewall?

Hello Forum!

This is my first post here and I hope I get it right.
Practically I want them to tell me their opinions on which is better between "Panda free antivirus and ad-adware free antivirus"

The so short djeo to be understood and be easy to answer

A Salu2! from Argentina!

A:What is better Panda free antivirus or ad-aware free?

Hello and welcome to malwaretips,
I think adaware got a better detection, but i would trust more Panda.
Both don't have proactive protection, and web filter are almost the same.
Adaware do more false positive than Panda (thanks bitdefender engine).
If you can use other antivirus than panda or adaware you should do it.

avast! is good compared to the others, and Bitdefender plus Malwarebytes just don't offer anything. Even thought, let's keep in mind that Malwarebytes is still just an Antimalware and not an Antivirus. Still nice to see it mentionned in an article like this to show that it doesn't put itself on the same level as the other security software.

I thought it would be a good idea in keeping with the overall goal of this site to start a thread to give people a list of legal and secure sites for downloading free or dirt-cheap movies, music and software/games.
I believe this would helpful in terms of not just telling people not to visit/support pirating websites,
but to also give them other alternatives so that there wouldn't be a temptation to go there anyway
(And also for people like me that Don't want to steal, but also don't want to pay more than I have to)

That is a good question.

I've tried many free antivirus over the years, but these two have always consistently been the ones I liked the most.

After some issues with Windows 10 last year, I had to briefly switch to Avira but after the issues were fixed I got back to Avast because it was the one I had learned to rely upon in the last few years. However, I'm open to reassess my position between these two excellent products. Something that has also spurred me to reassess the situation was the fact that LifeHacker has recently changed their recommendation from Avast to Avira as the "The Best (Free) Antivirus App for Windows".

On one hand Avast offers a more complete feature set:

File System Shield
Web Shield
Mail Shield
Behavior Blocker (DeepScreen)

Still, I disable the E-mail blocker because I solely use Web mail. I also disable the Web shield because:

It seems to slightly slow down my browsing
I don't like to have all my HTTP traffic analyzed by the AV or any other program
Sometimes it doesn't play well with HTTPS because it internally to scan the encrypted traffic which changes the original website's certificate (I know I can selectively disable the Web Shield for HTTPS only)

So, in practice, I have been using the File System Shield and the Behavior Blocker at default sensitivity settings (no Hardened Mode) to avoid too many False Positives and issues with less known software. I've had no problems with this set up for a long time.

Regarding Avira, it lac... Read more

every time I try comboxif get error that can't run because avg free is installed. could not remove avg free from computer. How do get combo fix to run?Edit: Moved topic from XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

A:combo fix won't run on win xp due to avg free

Hello, ComboFix will not run until AVG is uninstalled as a protective measure against the anti-virus. This is because AVG "falsely" detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove these files resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause damaging or "unpredictable results". This is an issue with AVG and since it cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends users to uninstall AVG first in order to avoid any possible issues.AVG also has issues with other security tools like Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. The built in firewall (not Comodo)

Malware bytes (not spyware blaster)

I currently have Spyware Doctor, PCTools Anti Virus, Spyware Blaster, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, AdAware, Spybot S&D, and Privacy Guardian installed. I know I know, way too many. I got desperate because some problems just wouldn't go away.

I cannot currently afford to purchase Kaspersky 2009 or any other program at the moment but would like to secure my computer in the meantime.

Was currently thinking of removing everything and just installing the following:

Avira AntiVir Personal
SuperAntiSpyware
Malwarebytes
Sunbelt Personal Firewall

and maybe PCTools Threatfire.

Would this be a good combo to help keep my PC clean until I can afford something like Kaspersky 2009?

I am looking into either downloading a freeware program or buying another Firewall/ Antivirus Program for my laptop.
I need a firewall that will help me use enough bandwidth as I possibly can while having an effective firewall working to protect me.
I need an antivirus and spyware program that will keep up to date every single day and has a MASSIVE known spyware an virus index so they have knowledge of all new viruses and spyware/adaware/malware out there.
I want every byte of data quickscanned when it enters my PC and have an in my face notification if anything is found on those bytes of data immediately when found.
I also do not want something that is going to hog up my CPU like crazy either.
SO TSG give me a list of options please???

Hi,

I was wondering what is the best free protection software I can use against virus/spyware/malware/etc, I can run on Windows 7. Currently I'm running Super Anti-spyware Free Edition, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free, and the latest McAfee Good Security Package provided by my Internet Service Provider (that claims to have the best protection on the market). I'm not sure how true this is, but would this be a good combination of programs to protect my system without conflicting with each other. What about Microsoft Security Essentials Free Edition (but I don't think I can run it with McAfee since it will conflict)? I used to run Avira Anti-Vir Free edition, until I switched internet providers and got McAfee for free. I did notice with McAfee that my system did use more resources, meaning I hear my CPU fan running a little higher than usual, but other than that, no issues.

Any suggestions as to which software combination I should keep on my system and which ones I should remove?

Windows 7 64 bit Home Edition (i3)

A:BEST Free ANTI-Virus/spyware/ malware combo?

If you're remaining with freebies:
Avast, Avira, etc antivirus will work for you [don't forget to not-install and/or disable un-wanted/un-needed modules].
SUPERAntispyware, SpywareBlaster, Spybot version 1.62, along with the others you mentioned will be ok.
I removed MSE from my laptops 'cause it wasn't needed.
Comodo Firewall [ditto on un-necessary modules] will work fine.
Windows 7's Firewall is really good! Comodo Firewall is not needed unless you want a "backup firewall" lurking unused.

I'm more and more going with pay-fors because I have better setup, configuration, settings, tweakings with pay-fors. Note: the data files for detection and alerting [and for many - removal] are the same for free and fee.

Greetings everyone! I recently replaced my McAfee Av software (provided by my ISP free), with the Avast 6 (free version). (My rationale for using Avast 6, is because McAfee is a system resource hog, and the Avast seems to run well concurrently with the MBAM Pro I have [real-time scanning enabled]). Since Avast has no firewall, my Windows Firewall is, of course, active again. My question: Is the Windows Firewall adequate, or should I be looking to acquire some other FREE Firewall product?(I've read some comments on other sites which claim Windows Firewall is considered mediocre).Any information/recommendations would be much appreciated!

A:Windows Firewall (XP Pro) vs other FREE Firewall products?

Most concerns you have heard about were with the Windows Firewall in the XP operating system. Microsoft significantly improved the firewall to address these concerns in Vista and then added more improvements in Windows 7.Windows XP firewall protects against port scanning but has limitations and it is no replacement for a robust 3rd-party two-way personal firewall. The XP firewall is not a full featured firewall. Normal firewalls allow you to specifically control each TCP and UDP port but XP?s firewall does not provide you with this capability. Instead, it takes a point and click approach to enabling or disabling a few common ports. The XP firewall does a good job of monitoring, examining and blocking inbound traffic but makes no attempt to filter or block outbound traffic like most 3rd-party personal firewalls. Thus, the XP firewall does not identify which programs attempt to initiate outbound network or Internet communications nor does it block the traffic when suspicious activity occurs. This feature can be helpful in preventing many types of malware attacks that may attempt to open ports or communicate with outside servers without the user's knowledge or consent. It also means that if your system has been compromised, a hacker could use your machine as part of a distributed denial of service attack.By default, Windows Firewall rejects all incoming traffic unless that traffic is in response to a previous outgoing request. I currently use Zone Alarm free firewall.
In 'add/remove programmes' it says that it is 8.9MB in size.
I've recently been prompted to update, which is 30.9MB. How come this is so big compared to what i have now.
I also thought ZA updated itself via the white arrow that appears over the icon in taskbar! or is that just updating the definitions, not the whole version.

I was thinking of using a different Firewall.
I've heard good reviews of Comodo & Kerido. I'm looking for something small in size, effective & easy to configure & use!

Any help appreciated

I've been using Comodo firewall along with AVG and super antispyware and haven't had any problems.

Hi,

I'm looking for a free firewall.
Which one should I use? ZoneAlarm free vs Comodo Firewall vs Outpost?

This would be used on a family computer so I need it to be as user-friendly as possible and possibly not many question popups. I tried Comodo already, it's great and advanced (I like the way I can have a in-depth look what's going on), but since we're now talking about a shared family PC, giving too much alerts might be an issue.

I also used Outpost Firewall in the past (on XP and Vista). I also liked that. I see they now have a freeware version, too. But since it's a 2009 version I'm not sure if it's fully compatible with Windows 7.

UPDATE:
For anyone reading this topic I'm leaving this here for reference, I hope this information will be useful for anyone looking for Outpost Free Firewall.

It seems that Outpost Free Firewall is now integrated into Outpost Security Suite Free. (AntiVirus is included too but if you have a different AntiVirus installed, Outpost will detect it and install as Firewall-only so they can work together!) I tested it with Kaspersky installed and it's OK. It's compatible with Windows 7.

A:Which free firewall?

What's wrong with the built in firewall?

Just got the NOD32 Antivirus from a PC shop and I need help.

Inside the package it says *VERY IMPORTANT!!* - Please make sure you uninstall all other antivirus software before installing this software. Running more than one security program could cause serious problems.

I am about to install NOD32 antivirus but AVG free edition antivirus is in the way.
The warning sign from the package of NOD32 is making me worry...
Is it ok to install NOD32 antivirus on my PC that has AVG free edition antivirus installed?

These are the security programs I have at the moment --

* Ad-aware 2007
* AVG free edition AntiVirus

A:NOD32 antivirus + AVG Antivirus (Free Edition)??
