I've created a batch file containing the xcopy command to copy the entire partitioned drive to a folder on an external hard drive. However, when it is executed it works fine but the destination folder, called Backup, becomes a hidden system folder. Does any one know why this is the happening. I'm performing the xcopy on my parents computer, which is on win7.
Code is as follows:

REM This copies the intire H drive (Laptop Parition) to G drive (Segatemega Drive)
xcopy H:\ G:\Backup /D /E /C /R /I /K /Y

A:xcopy - destination folder becomes a hidden system folder - why?

Not my forte but I believe adding the attribute to remove hidden and system would work. Not sure about the syntax, but since you seem to have a handle on it, something like:

xcopy H:\ G:\Backup /D /E /C /R /I /K /Y
attrib -h -s G:\Backup

Hi guys,

Ran into a bit of a problem that I cant see to get around. Hopefully someone can help me out here.
I was working on an androidstudio project and had to install an emulator which required me to go into the AppData path in c/. Long story short, I couldnt find it so I played around with some settings in the properties of c/users/"myuser", namely the attributes "Read only" and "Hidden" attributes of the folders themselves and the folders/files within them. Now there is a bunch of files and folders which are "missing" (Hidden) or "readOnly" from my desktop and my folders . Some real clusterf**k of a problem Basically I would like to find out if there is a way to revert my user settings since I cant really tell at surface level exactly what is hidden or what has been changed to read-only.

So far I have tried to a system restore to no avail as well as trying to revert my changes but I cant seem to make that work either.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I used folder options and have enabled "show hidden files and folders". I now want to show hidden files in all folders with the exception of one, single folder.

Anyone know how I can manipulate this single folder to not show these hidden files without it applying to all folders? I have tried everything in "folder options" with no luck. Is there a tweak to this single folder's desktop.ini that I can perform to make this happen?

Here's the problem I'm having. This virus keeps popping up in McAffee on my computer: Downloader-ER, and its housed in 2 files (bridge[1].exe and bridge.exe) in 2 separate folders:

D:\Documents and Settings\My Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\KHYNCPYJ\bridge[1].exe

It won't let me delete or quarantine the files because they're in either hidden or read only folders, all I can do is hit the 'stop' button in McAffee. Even when I search in Windows, it can't find either file, and that's with the hidden files and folders being searched.

Now, when I go into D:\Documents and Settings\My Name Here\ there's no Local Settings folder, and when I go into D:\DOCUME~1\MYNAMEHERE~1.DAN\LOCALS~1\Temp\ there's no bridge.exe.

What I'd like to do is go into those folders and delete the files manually, but since the folders and files are hidden I can't get into them. How do I make my computer show me all of the files and folders in those particular folders so I can get rid of them?

Hello ismail,

not really sure you can do that but what you can do is

1 put a good password on the BIOS / you will have to enter the BIOs to do this

2 put a password on the hidden (administrator account ) in safemode & set it for private

3 put a password in your account & set it for private

4 then create another user account as a administrator / now follow these instructions and remove all rights to the account that you just created

when you power on your system start tapping the (F8)key & keep tapping it until a screen is revealed that gives you the options

safe mode with comand prompt
safe mode with network

and many others

you will want to select (safe mode ) then enter

then a screen with all types of codes will scroll down

then you will get the welcom screen stating that windows is loading

then you will get the user log on screen

here you will have a list of all users and a hidden (administrator account) you will need to log onto this account

Sorry to post this in this Forum....having too many problems posting in the proper Forum...continues to say I am not a registered user although I am.

Recently, a friends computer got ransacked by viruses and spy-ware. While I have cleaned it up quite a bit (using Hijack This, Ad-Aware, Spy-bot, AVG, CW Shredder, A2, etc.) it still freezes after logging in. The computer will say it is loading the users settings after login but then will freeze after only the wallpaper has loaded, no start menu or desktop icons will load.

I have booted in safe mode and the same thing happens. I have run virus scans on the computer and have been successful in deleting many viruses but one is still lingering in a temporary Internet file that is "hidden". Because the start menu and desktop icons are not loading I have no way (that I know of) of changing the folder view (under the Tools menu selection of My Computer) to show all hidden files.

Does anyone know another method to show hidden folders? And has anyone else ran into the problem where their computer freezes after loading the wallpaper but not the start menu and desktop icons? I'd surely post my Hijack This log but it is on the other computer. If necessary I can transfer the file if suggestions seem to be limited based on the above information.

I download RogueKiller and saved it to the desktop and performed the first scan with windows and browsers open. then realized that they should be closed so did another scan with everything closed. you can find both reports attached.
then as you instructed I used the "attrib -h -s -r -a /s /d G:\*.*"
my flash drive name is G:\
nothing seemed to happen in the command prompt as you see in the attached photo
then I checked my G:\ drive
the administrator shortcut still exists but the autorun.ini is gone for now. not sure if its permenantly gone though.
when i double click on the administrator shortcut i recevie this error: can not find script file "G:\Microsoft.exe".
at some point in the middle of these steps an unnamed folder showed up in the G:\ drive and a file with this extention: ".init" or something and one more file which sadly i can not recall its name. i shift+deleted them successfully.
after these steps I downloaded Rkill and ran scan. you can also find the report attached to this post.

I shoud also inform you that prior to these steps I used autorun exterminator for killing the autorun.ini but it did no good and kept cycling in a loop which the program deleted the autorun file but it kept regenerating itself over and over again.
oh and my anti virus does not detect any threats. it is ESET Smart Security.

Need some help with my system, as its behaving erratically and I suspect its a virus but I've no idea how to start to get rid of it.

Symptoms are as follows:

Everything has started from my Outlook 2007 going nuts. And I have had to completely close down one of my email IMAP account folders, as it can no longer be accessed. If I try to, Outlook when crazy, and kept flickering for a few minutes, without me being able to control it. The only way was to Task Manager > End process.

The same flickering has also affected other programs including Photoshop, Acrobat and InDesign. In the later three, it tends to stop after a while, but then continues if I do something else.

The problem with Outlook (e.g. the IMAP account) said that it was corrupted. Therefore I have tried to use scanpst.exe to at least to look at the .pst file. However, when I tried to find the the .pst email account file inside my Doc settings folder, I couldn't because it was hidden as a system file.

Hence, suspecting I have some kind of virus, I tried to uncheck the Do Not Display Hidden Files, Folders option -- only to find that there is only one option -- which is always checked. Therefore I cannot display all system files etc.

After a few attempts to alter the registery to SHOWALL, it remains locked. Therefore I suspect there is a virus problem blocking me from finding the .pst file, and to resolve my email problem.

I may have done something very stupid -- as I downloaded and ran what looked lik... Read more

Hi all,

My girlfriend's recently over the last couple of days got a virus on her laptop, I'm writing this post from my uninfected laptop as i'm unable to from hers.

The laptop showed signs of problems 3 days ago with a popup message from a program called "Security Suite" (not antivirus that was installed) claiming there was a virus on the machine, and that to click here etc to solve the problem.

Virus protection on the laptop was Avast! Antivirus (free version) and Spybot Search & Destroy anti-malware. I ran both these programs, Spybot came up with some adaware bugs that were removed. Avast claimed to find a rootkit in the windows driver system folder. It claimed to need to run a boot scan to delete it, which i did - however the problem got worse.

I'm sorry for being so vague, the problem now is that every time we login to the computer - in normal mode we get the message:

Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save your work now.

I tried running in safe mode to run the programs you listed in your "first steps" post but after a minute of being logged in, the computer restarts.

Would it please be possible to get some preliminary advice on how to stop this new message so i can access the programs listed?

Many thanks to you all; and apologies for the vagueness and lack of detail.

Hello all, I have two problems which I think might be related. First off, everytime I want to go into my c: drive, windows asks me what program do I want to use, and I manually select windows explorer, then I am able to go in c: drive...never did that before..just noticed the problem maybe a week or so. Secondly, I am not able to view hidden folders, when I select the view hidden folders and apply the selection, I then go back to see if it is still selected and it is not. It reverts back automatically to do not show hidden folders, further more, I've noticed that I've been experiencing frequent error messages while I am navigating to various websites, and windows explorer now has to close. Hello Muy Raro,

Infection is showing here, so let's get to some repairs, then see about those other problems as well if our repairs don't resolve them (I think they will). Be sure when posting to include the entire logs (the HijackThis log is missing the header portion).
To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.
Download ComboFix.exe from here to your desktop, but I would like you to rename the file as you download it (do not download it directly without renaming it). Just save it to your desktop as MyCombo.exe. Then click the MyCombo.exe file to run the repair.

When the command window opens, select 1 (and Enter). Allow the scan to run. When completed a text window will appear - please copy/paste the contents back here. This log can also be found at C:\ComboFix.txt.

When starting ComboFix will cause your computer's internal speakers to produce two beeps, and during the start process display two warnings. These are intended to discourage people who are not getting help in the forum from just experimenting with tools they do not understand. Just to inform you so you will understand that the procedures are expected, and okay.

Hello there,

I've come accross this issue and it appears as if one of my USD drives may have infected with some sort of virus/spyware which prevents me from selecting the "Show hidden folders" check box in windows xp (2 desktops and my laptop). I found this thread and noticed that the person who originally posted the problem was able to resolve it following the help from one of the moderators:

I tried this myself and no luck. In fact after deleting teh DWORD entry from regedit and entering "1" as the value, every time i go back to regedit its set back to 0 :(

I've tried AGV & McAfee scans and no luck.

I used ERD commander to remove some hidden EXE which resided in the root of C:\ yet the problem still continues.

Has anyone found any other possible fixes to this issue?

Hello I hope you can help, you have before and that was great!

I have had no problems since you last helped me but I ran a Spyware Doctor scan and found around 30,000 .exe files that were obviously some kind of trojan. I tracked them down and found them in the System Volume Information folder where I the system restore points get filed. I went into safe mode, activated permissions to get into the folder and deleted all of the files. This worked for a while then they just reapeared again!

I found somewhere that someone said to just deactivated the system restore service which again worked but hasn't corrected the problem.

I have just run another scan and it again has found over 30,000 files (around 2gb of data) in the RECYCLER folder (which I understand in the deleted files area).

Can you help me firstly get rid of them and help me find what ever it is that is causing these problems and get rid of that forever!

I really rely upon and need my laptop for work and this is seriously slowing things down.

Can someone help?!

Hello thistle2 and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can hide malware from us when we are performing a fix, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:Please click on Start, then Run, and type msconfig and then press Enter. When the window opens you should be on the General tab. Click on the Normal Startup item. Then press ok until you are out of the program. It will ask you to reboot so reboot normally. Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it here as a reply. I will review it when it comes in.OT

Hi I have been facing problem (breaking my head day & night to solve this) with some malware/ spyware kind of thing which is keep on creating the virus files (exe) in the name of parent folder with folder icon. The file size of the created file is 789kb. I have suspected the files regsvr.exe, rundll.exe, winhelp.exe and killed those processes, files from windows-system32 folder & in other places, also removed the startup entry from the registry but eventhough it's starting from next boot, I have scanned my system even in safemode after disabling windows restore.

I am using Symantec Corporate Edition 8.0 with latest updated definitions and Spybot S&D 1.5.2 with fully updated as of today. None of these are identifying the trojan activity. I have also tried online scan thru symantec and trend micro both says no virus. Spybot says there is a spyware "007 spy software" infection it's fixing it, but still no use from next boot onwards any of those three files will start running.

I don't know from where it's coming back after I deleted those files from the system with that names.

it's also creating a autorun.ini (with the code to run the file rundll.exe), copying regsvr.exe in the shared drives and in pen drives.

Since no antivirus is identifying these virus to know the name to get a fix, Iam not able to solve this.

It will be helpfull some one can help me on this issue to solve.

my mail id is [email protected]

A:Solved: virus spreading by creating exe in the name of parent folder with the folder

finally I have found the solution for the issue.

1. Turn Off the "System Restore".

Select my computer icon in the desktop and right click then click on properties you will get a window with multiple tabs select the System restore tab and check on the "Turn off system restore".

2. Delete the hidden "SSData" folder in "C:\Windows\System32"

Type the above path in the Run or Windows Explorer, then select it's content or the entire folder and press del key to remove. The above SSData folder will be in hidden.

3. Remove virus startup entries in "MSconfig"

This you must do very careful to avoid problems in loading windows/ other programs

4. Use Symantec Corporate Edition 10.0 to remove viruses

To remove this virus created files in the name of parent folder and virus files you must have the Symantec Corporate Edition 10.0 and above recent versions of Norton products with latest definitions.

I turned my computer on after work and found that it seemed like everything had been deleted, as in I had no installed programmes anymore and my documents, pictures and videos libraries were empty. Also that I had no record of my email anymore.. So I had a look and found this new user folder (Dan.Dan-PC) which was created in my users folder.

My old user (Dan) is still there which has all my old information and library structure there but it is not being showed anymore. It is some virus which is loading these new libraries on startup!! Please help me!!!

I did a scan with AVG and got this:

One of my user's folders has disappeared from the folder C:\Documents and Settings in Windows Explorer, and can only be displayed if the 'Hide protected operating system files' box is unticked in Folder Options - View.

This probably means that the user's folder has, somehow, been set as a system folder.

How can this be reset so that it displays correctly, ie when the 'Hide protected operating system files' box is ticked.

My friend (we'll call him David) created for some sick and twisted purpose a folder path that contained 107 (no joke) folders within folders, something in the order of, "C:\folder\folder\folder\folder\..." David is now unable to delete the folder directory. When he tried to delete it, it says "Are you sure you want to move the folder and all its contents to the recycle bin? (yes, yes to all, or no)." He clicks "yes to all" or "yes", and it says, "The folder contains items who's name is too long for the recycle bin. Do you want to permanently delete it?" He clicks "yes" or "yes to all" again and it says, "Cannot delete z: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and filename."

Anyhow, does anybody know how to delete this file? Any assistance would be greatly apreciated.

I tried deleting these account folders, but to no avail.

I kept the documents in my previous accounts before deleting them. It has no use now. Other documents were easily deleted, except for that GOOGLE DRIVE folder.

Whenever I try, this always happens:

I am using the administrator's account, but I still get the message all over again!

I tried deleting the subfolders of GOOGLE DRIVE, but:

I also used this method but look:

"Access is denied."

Sometimes, I also get these messages:

I guess that "S-1-5.." is the deleted account.

I have no idea what to do now.
Help me please?

Please click Here to download HijackThis to your desktop.

Click the Download button. When the Trend Micro HJT install box appears, double click on the HJTInstall.exe. Click on Install.

It will be installed by default here: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

First, please forgive me if I have overlooked this issue in the many searches I have performed thus far.

I would like to know if anyone has a way to change all folder icons within a single folder to one specific icon without performing each one individually. I have over 1,400 folders within a master folder of which I would like to change the child folder icons. I really don't wish to perform this on a folder-by-folder basis.
This is not a Default Folder Icon Change inquiry. This is simply all child folders within a single master folder. I would also be interested if the change would affect all folders of a specific type. Windows 7 does allow the 'setup' of a folder to be distributed (details view with selected details, order, and column size for example) but the icon did not distribute as well.

Any suggestions?

A:Bulk Change All Folder Icons in Single Folder or Folder Type

First, a little bit of theory. What happens when a person sets a custom icon for a folder in Windows 7?
1. Attributes of a Folder change to Read-only (of the folder, NOT content!).
2. A hidden system file created inside that folder, which contains a link to the icon.

Thus, having such file as model, it is possible simply copy it across desired folders, and change attributes of those folders correspondingly.

Secondly, having this idea in my mind, I have put all of my little knowledge of Batch files together and created a script.
BEFORE script is started the following is needed to be done:
Master folder needs to be selected and a custom icon applied to it.

1. Script is placed inside that master folder and launched.
2. First, script checks if hidden system file with custom icon settings is there.
3. Secondly, script looks for subfolders and start changing its attributes.
4. Thirdly, script copies this settings file to all subfolders of current master folder, including all levels of subfolders.

For 100 folders it took about 21 seconds, for 200 folders with different levels of subfolders it took about 57 seconds on my laptop.

I have included remarks (comments) in the source code for better understanding what is going on.

UPDATE: Original file deleted. Script was not meant to be applied to system folders.
Please check a newer FIXED version at this post.

Alright, you guys have always been extremely knowledgeable and helpful here, so I'm back with this problem. I have a feeling I know exactly where it started (I used to burn games to store for later on if I ever decided to play them again, these problems started when I tried to copy an old game from DVD to my PC). The issues that arose at first, were that everything was disappearing from my desktop. Wallpaper first, it disappeared and left just a black background, all my icons and files were turned to "hidden" (which probably explains the wallpaper issue, not being able to find the file since it was hidden). After that I started to lose sound, all my movies would play, but without sound, music worked fine for a bit, but now iTunes tells me it's detected a problem with my audio configuration and may not be able to playback. My normal Windows sounds are working however (minimize, shut down and start up etc etc). Lastly, I tried to do a System Restore, but it comes up that System Restore is unable to protect my computer and that I should restart and try again. In the last little bit, another error pops up, I forget exactly what it was, something about a General error with something 32, maybe Win32? It turns my start bar back into the old classic look, rather than the default blue XP one (which to confirm, I am using Windows XP). Hopefully that's enough starter info and hopefully someone is able to help. Thanks in advance, regardless.

Have you tried deleting the Internet Explorer History? If that doesn't work, you could always try My Computer. Also you could try going into the folder that your hidden folder is in, click on Tools>>Folder Options, go to view and check "Show Hidden Files and Folders". This will allow you to see the folder and browse its contents. Just make sure you change the setting back otherwise the folder will be able to be seen.

Alright so here's the prob...

First off I've got vista home premium, and there's this folder, named "!", in my user directory that I can't see, and I already chose to display hidden files and folders. The path is supposed to be C:\Users\myname\! and I have proven it exists because when I try and create a new folder named "!" in my user directory, it says that this folder already exists, and gives me the option to merge it.

Once I merge it, it dissapears. I've tried opening command prompt and typing "DEL C:\Users\myname\!\" and it asks me am I sure, and I put "Y" and hit enter. After hitting enter the blinking line goes down one space and I can't type anything or do anything further, I have to close command prompt.

I'm stumped
Thanx in advance for any help.

Hello Sophie,

What is it exactly that you're trying to do? The link you posted - - is for a download, rather than being the name of a folder you'd expect to find on your computer.

However, to display hidden folders, go into your control panel and double-click on the Folder Options icon. (If using Vista, change the control panel view to Classic.)

In the Folder Options box, click on the View tab. Under Files and Folders is a subheading, called Hidden files and folders. Select "Show hidden files and folders," click "OK," and you should be good to go.

I sort the folder by "date last saved" so that my newest songs are always at the bottom and the oldest are at the top, after the sub folders

However, whenever I open the folder, windows seems like it is re-searching and rebuilding the cache, taking upwards of 5 seconds in order for the folder to be sorted again.

This only started happening after I reinstalled windows, however that is all that has changed. My music is on another drive, the same drive that it was before I reinstalled.

Why does it keep doing this, and how do I get it to remember how it is sorted?

everything becomes unhidden, except for one folder and all of its contents.

I get the error:

access denied - the folder

When I try changing the ownership of the previous folder that contains the hidden folder that won't unhide, I get the error:

Also, I have seen that there are some folders within C:\ProgramData corresponding to softwares that are no longer on my system. Is it safe to delete these folders?

A:What's The C:\programdata Hidden Folder?

From what I could gather from Microsoft's site and other websites, the folder C:\ProgramData contains part of the Operating System. It is not recommended that you change the location of the folder let alone deleting it! That probably explains why the folder is hidden from view.ProgramData:"... By changing the default location of the user profile directories or program data folders to a volume other than the System volume, you will not be able to service your Windows installation. Any updates, fixes, or service packs will fail to be applied to the installation. Microsoft does not recommend that you change the location of the user profile directories or program data folders.

You have to change a couple of things, this is what I do:

a. Put check mark in Display contents of system folders.

b. Remove Do not show..., elect Show hidden files/folders.

c. Remove check from Hide extensions for known file types.

I then can see all files and file extensions, thus making myself able to clearly have some idea of whether I have the right path or not.

I used xcopy to copy a huge number of files to a folder on an external hard drive. When I was done, the folder was nowhere to be found on the hard drive, even though I have "view hidden folders" enabled. I could, however, see that the disk space was being consumed. I went into DOS and could cd into the directory and see everything (even though it didn't show up in the directory listing there either). This was on Win XP. I plugged the external drive into a Vista machine and the folder is visible, but its semi-transparent, as hidden folders are. How to I make it into a regular folder?? What might I have done wrong?

EDIT: I finally spotted the "hidden" checkbox in properties under Vista, but it's grayed out... ??

EDIT2: Okay, googling around about grayed out hidden checkboxes lead to the attrib -s -h <file/folder> command, which fixed my issue. The remaining question is, why in the world did this happen?

I'm trying to update this texture mod for this game emulator I use however when I removed the the texture mod, the game still had the textures from the mod.

I later discovered that it also puts the textures in a cache folder so I need to also remove it from the cache folder. The only problem is, the cache folder is hidden.

I already tried enabling 'Show hidden folders' from the folder options but it is still hidden.

How do I unhide the cache folder.

I am a regular user of Winmend Folder Hidden. Love it. Great piece of software.
Just the other day I had to recover the contents of a USB pen drive, that I could no longer access, as it was showing as 'RAW'.
I used recovery software (M3RawDriveRecovery) to recover the folders & files to my PC.
I took some time but I managed to recover the folders & files.
I had folders & files on the USB drive that were hidden, using Winmend Folder Hidden.
When I was using the recovery software I could see my Winmend hidden files seemingly being recovered.
What I am left with now (on my PC) is a folder, titled 'Winmend~Folder~Hidden'. If I click on that I just get a folder named '...'
When I look at the properties tab of the folder titled 'Winmend~Folder~Hidden' it shows me that there are 257 folders...which sounds correct, in terms of the amount I had hidden, using WinMend Folder Hidden.
So I am wondering if there is any way I could possibly recover these folders & files?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's the steps to show all, hidden, and hidden system files for XP:

(Including how to Find these type of files with Search tool)
Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search>Files and Folders>> and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Hope that helps....

Ok, I tried to move my personal folders to another drive & got things screwed up. By following some of the advice here I was able to get things back to the default.

I only have one problem. Under C:\Users\Carrie I can't see the Documents folder. I can see all the other personal folders, but not the Documents folder. At the top of the tree, under my name, Carrie, I can see the Documents folder. If I unhide files & System files I can see the Documents folder under C:\Users\Carrie.

I have compared the Documents folder properties with the other personal folder properties to see if I could see a difference. The only difference is on the Document folder the hidden attribute has a check by it but it is grayed out. You can't change it. I thing this might be the problem, but I don't know how to fix it.

Could someone help me?

Hello cstout,
Welcome to the forums.

The first thing I would try is to take ownership of the folder. Info here if needed. Take Ownership of file

This tutorial will also show you how to check owner in the properties/security tab.

Hi there,

Im sorry if this is simple, but i was on my account trying to unhide a folder in the users folder and then it started updating all the folders, once it had done this i can now longer see any documents, music, pictures or anything, not even the recycling folder...everything has gone, but when i go show info on a song on itunes it says the usual (being where the music is stored:users/userdocs etc) but it does still let me play it, so i know its all there but just hidden!

My lack of computer skills and trying to be clever means i have no idea what i have done!

Please, how do get all my stuff back, many thanks for your help in advance, and happy new year!

Hello Maattack, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you did not try to move them, then see if doing only steps 22-24 in OPTION TWO of the tutorial below for each user folder may be able to unhide them for you.

We have two fairly new vista 64sp1 machines. We are using a monitor cal program that on one machine will write the color profile to the system32/spool/drivers/color directory without a problem. The program on the other machine will not. I can browse from the cal programs and on one machine I can see the spool directory and the other I can't. Though I can see most of the other folders in system32.

The other clue is I can see the spool directory with WINDOWS explorer on both machines. But with INTERNET explorer 7 I can only see the spool directory on the good machine. I can also see the spool directory with programs like Thunderbird on one machine, but not the other. But programs like notepad are ok on both.

The spool folder permissions appear to be the same on both and I have tried unhiding folders and even superhidden folders with no luck. I have also tried running the program as admin and compatibility modes. I have spent two days trying to fix this and if anyone has an idea how to fix this it would be great.

A:Another hidden folder puzzle, I think.

Let me rephrase this. Why on both machines would I be able to use explorer, notepad etc., and see the system32\spool folder,
But when I use Internet Explorer, Thunderbird and my calibration program to open a file and browse to the system32 directory the spool folder is missing only on one machine?

Both have Vista64 sp1 with all the updates?

I just downloaded and unzipped Tor (a browser that preserves anonymity) on my Win7 Pro x64 system. During the unzipping process I told the self-extractor to create a Tor folder in my Program Files (x86) directory and extract everything into it. When it finished I opened Windows Explorer to navigate to the directory, but couldn't find it (see NoTor.jpg attachment). I re-ran the extractor and it shows the directory, and everything previously extracted (YesTor.jpg). I have show hidden files and folders checked in Control Panel | Folder Options. I realize there's a lock on the Tor folder, but I thought that had to do with access control, not visibility.

I'm asking here rather than at Tor as I'd like to learn the Windows principle involved rather than just solve this immediate problem.

A:Exposing a hidden folder

The padlock is related to ownership and permissions.

In this particular case, the folder Tor is owned by the system, hence the padlock overlay.

Have a look at this WSF thread on a similar issue to yours.

Hello All,
I am working on a windows 2k machine. It was hacked a few weeks ago. The machine has since been cleaned of the programs. Here is the problem The HD is showing 4.3GB of disk space free, and is showing 73.2GB being used.
When I show hidden files and then look at the properties of the different folders I am only seeing about 6.4GB of disk space being used.
Is there a utility to show all hidden files? I have gone into tools/folder options/view/show hidden files, but I do not believe that the computer is showing me all of the hidden files. Does anyone know how I can search this hd for these hidden files?
I believe that while the machine was hacked it was serving music, and movies, but I can not find any trace of those. This is a critical machine, and I can not just do a format, and then install everything from scratch.
Any help or hints would be appreciated.

Hello:  I wanted to delete every fragment of AVG TuneUp, and thought I had done so, both with manual means and via the tool they claim removes everything.  I ran a scan recently to check if all my stuff was up to date, and voila, a component of AVG is still there.  Furthermore, I ran a FRST scan to see where it's located and it's in a hidden folder (not cool). Tried to research how to unhide it and nothing works.  I don't want to venture into FRST fixlist territory or the registry because I don't know what I'm doing.  Thanks for any guidance.   Windows 8.1 by the way.
If the FRST and Addition texts are needed, I'll load them.

In my newsreader program, I can select a posting and "save as" and the 'downloads' or 'attachments' sub-folder within my newsreader program folder are there. When I go to file explorer in the same program folder they are absent. When I do CMD and go that the newsreader program folder they are not there. Not sure what's going on.

A:how to exposure a hidden folder

If the program is not responding, try uninstalling then re-installing.
Without knowing what program it is, can't give much more than that.

The forum rules won't allow us to give too much help; most of these programs require a password, and trying to bypass that is against the rules.
That said, some of the simple ones just move the folder into the System Volume Information folder, in a cryptically named folder. A search for a file you know to be in that folder can often find it. You'll need to add your user account on the Security tab for the System Volume Information folder to gain access to it. (Right click | Properties | Security)

is there any program or something like that what shows you what folders and when they have been created EVEN if they are hided ?

I found a good hiding solution, it's like this -
I go to Start --> Run (Alt + R) --> type CMD --> then a Command Prompt opens and it has a line like this "C:\Documents and Settings\Matt.MATT-C197669C00>" and then I got to C:\Documents and Settings\Matt.MATT-C197669C00 and there I create a folder named "asjad", then in command Prompt I type in "attrib asjad +s +h" and then my folder disappears and if I go to search and type "asjad" into search it doesn't find that folder. If I go back to command Prompt and type in "attrib asjad -s -h" then my folder appears again. Then I go to search and type "asjad" into search and it finds it.
!!And my question with that is, Is there a program or something that finds that folder ? It would be great if it would show the date when this folder is created, but if it doesn't it would be good too if it would show latest first or something like that !

Now my next question is - Can I search a hidden pictures or pictures in hidden folders or anything ?
Can I, I really need to find some of my brothers pictures and delete them .

Thank you !

A:How to find hidden folder ?

In Search, click More Advanced Options and check the box for Search system folders and also the box for Search hidden files and folders

You can change the view settings in Windows Explorer (Tools | Folder Options, View tab) so those files are visible.

To show the date created, in the Search window or Windows Explorer click View | Details, then click View | Choose Details... and add Date Created

This isn't as easy as it sounds. I checked "Show Hidden Files" And I unchecked both "Hide blah system files etc."

So I go to my second hard drive D... And I see the Recycler folder. I click on it, and it shows me four recycling bins with really long names and weird letters and numbers that nobody in the world understands.

I click on each one of the recycling bins held in the "Recycler" Folder, and they are empty. But I want to retrieve files from them that I know are there.

How do I know they are there? My McAfee scanned for viruses, and I was watching and reading the scanned folders and files with my hyper speed vision. I noticed it said:
Scanning: D:\Recycler\...\BlahFolder\Blah.jpg etc etc etc

While in each recycling bin, I once more went to Tools > Folder Options > View. And verified the settings there.

I'm sure microsoft has reasons for keeping their own deleted files from the public. And I know about some rmdir/s commands to delete directories and remove them for good. But I want to possibly recover them. It wasn't important before because I put it out of my mind that the files were lost forever. But there are some important family pictures that I believe are only in those files which I thought I lost.

Thank you for your help.

A:C:\Recycler Folder Hidden

I don't know of a free method of retrieving those files, by Norton Utilities has a toll that allows to recover previsously deleted data(what you need to clear) and to Empty Norton Protected Files.
