Avast 7 free! AV + Comodo Free Firewall Conflicts

Q: Avast 7 free! AV + Comodo Free Firewall Conflicts

I have always used Avast and Comodo as my AV/Firewall combination. I find it to be very useful, and although Comodo provides many annoying popups, they are useful and informational (I would consider myself a competent computer user, though no expert).

Recently, I just wanted to see how good my combination was and if there was a better one. I found topics that said of how Avast's web shield completely bypasssed Comodo's rules. I tested this:

1) Block chrome.exe in Comodo completely
2) Check that both Comodo and Avast are updated, and Avast web shield ON
3) Open Chrome and see what happens

Results: At first I thought it was fine, google.com was blocked. Then I tried clicking on bookmarks. yahoo.com would open, youtube.com would open, etc. I was shocked to find that Comodo was letting these websites open even though chrome.exe was blocked!

After doing some more research, and realizing that this was a big problem, and that many solutions did not work, with avast being blamed or comodo being outdated, or even that Win 7 64 bit was limiting comodo, I tested it again with web shield OFF.

I repeated the process of blocking chrome and opened google.com and other websites. This time all the websites were blocked!

Is there a solution where I can keep web shield on and have comodo be effective in blocking? Or do I need a new firewall?

No one has a solution?

Offtopic: Spybot S&D or SUPERAntiSpyware? It's kind of obvious, but is spybot still horrible?

Hi,

I want change my computer protection.

I want install Avast or Avira. But Avira doesn't have a firewall, so I want install avira + comodo firewall.

Which would be better for zero day malware protection and signatures: Avast Internet Security 2016 Or Avira+ Comodo firewall

A:Avast Internet Security 2016 VS Avira Free + Comodo Firewall

Avira + Comodo firewall is almost unbreakable. Best signatures and best proactive for zero day malwares.

Hello, I have an Acer Aspire One netbook running Windows 7 Home Premium, and I need protection. It only has 1GB of RAM, so would I get Avast! free 5.1 or Comodo internet security 5.0? I was thinking of maybe MSE 2.0, but heard it is not RAM friendly.

A:Avast! Free 5.1 final vs Comodo Internet security 5.0

I wouldnt use Comodo AV since its hasnt been tested and it has an okay detection. The backbone of the whole suite of comodo is the D+ which is a HIPS.

Why not use Avast Free + Comodo FW w/ D+? You get a very good AV and an excellent firewall+hips program.

anybody tried this one?

I've installed instead of sygate

seems o.k. so far apart from an annoying

when you install it says a 30 day trial

but when you register and get a key to activate

once it's set up and running it now says expires feb 2007

also says at the moment just reapply for a new key after 12 months

Any thoughts or trials anyone?

Hello Everyone,Just cruising around this great site checking out some of the 'goodies' on offer. In doing this I became mildly interested in this Topic Title's free firewall. Comodo is listed at the head of this Forum in the free replacements for commercial software. Sounds good. So I visited the Comodo site where, as would be expected, the firewall gets rave reviews and claims. Again sounds good. Plus I have noticed several site members do use the product. Then I did a search of the Forum on Comodo hoping to find out what users of the product actually have to say about it; what a/v and spyware detection they might be using with Comodo; things like that. That is when I ran onto this, shall we say, less than good review of Comodo. You can read it here. The relevant bits come at the end of the thread in the form of two off-site links, after which, the subject/thread just goes dead.So what once looked to me like good, multiple recommendations for Comodo suddenly turned into something else. I'm confused. Questions arise. Are or were the makers of Comodo mixed up in commercial spyware? Is the firewall fragile and not kind to multiple user accounts? What's the bottom line on Comodo's free forever firewall? Anybody know?Regards... A:Comodo's Free Forever Firewall

Hey Jeff -Me again.I've not used Comodo's Firewall, so I can't give you any specific info, but I do notice the dates on those posts, some referencing information over a year old. Many people may recommend ZoneLab's free Zone Alarm Free Firewall (at the bottom of the page). You can find negative information on it, too, and virtually any legitimate product if you search hard enough.I'll sit back now, and let folks who have used Comodo's product reply.Have a great day.

New Comodo Bug. We found a second new bug in Comodo which may cause conflict with MBAE and result in browsers not being able to open correctly. It seems when MBAE injects after Comodo there is no problem, but if Comodo injects after MBAE then Comodo doesn't handle the chained hooks correctly. A fresh re-install of MBAE might temporarily solve the problem (as it sometimes makes MBAE handle the API hooks after Comodo) but the definite bug fix must come from Comodo.

You would use CFW along with SpS Free? In my opinion, this might not be a good idea.

As far as I know, HIPS softwares will use hooks to monitor the activities of applications.

I know little about hooks, but I hear that hooks of different security products could conflict with each other with a non-zero probability.

I am afraid that such kind of conflicts would not only influence the stability, but also influence the protection. (I have no evidence, just some thoughs...)

Now I know many of you will say there is no need for a firewall that will replace Ms's own one in Windows 8.1 and yes, I agree with you. But I wanted someting a bit more visually appealing and engaging. Plus I like experimenting with new software

Anyhoo it's not a problem but after a week I noticed that Security Centre was flashing messages at me that anti-virus protection was switched off. I currently use Avast which of course disables Defender. It listed Avast, Defender and Comodo as all switched off. I was able to activate Defender and I am now receiving updates for it.

Avast runs as a on demand scanner much in the same way as Malewarebytes. I can see that I have to update definitions manually.

So looking more closely at Comodo, all I have is a shortcut to Firewall (MS one is switched off) on my desktop but looking at the directories I can see that the folder is called Security which implies an anti-virus. It does have a scanner but if that is an anti-virus then it's rubbish

I'm happy with Defender as my principal defence even though Avast would be my first choice but annoyed that Comodo would sneak in something that is totally unwanted and conflicts with my chosen setup. This is beginning to sound more like a rant but I hate being duped.

And ps, my cpu is not up to virtulisation but it's interesting to see that I have a virtual desktop with Comodo. Don't know what to use it for as my browsing is limited but I'm always open to suggestions

A:Does free Comodo Firewall contain an anti-virus?

I dislike the free one ( and I vaguely recall it's a trial? )

I have heard good things though about the PRO version.

As for the virtual part. A lot of people will use virtual desktops as their safe haven for banking online as it doesn't save no history or cookies to the computer/program.

Hello everyone,

I am hoping someone can please help me with the following...

My current security setup is...

AVG free anti-virus
Windows Defender anti-spyware
Zone Alarm free firewall version 6.5.737.000
Cyberhawk http://www.novatix.com/cyberhawk/
Firefox browser with no-script extension
Sandboxie

I also do periodic scans with AVG anti-spyware free (real time disabled), spybot search and destroy, lavasoft adaware, a-squared, and bitdefender online scan.

My current setup is working fine, but recently when I tried to upgrade Zone Alarm free, it caused my computer to crash and restart so I had to go back to version 6.5.737.000 which always worked great. I have also read reviews that the most recent version of ZA is also causing crashes. Additionally, ZA free is now about a 38 MB download which takes some time to download on a 56 k dial up connection.

I like to keep my security software updated, but do I really need to update to the most recent version of ZA ? If not now, then when ?

I have been thinking of trying the free Comodo firewall as it seems to have good reviews, although I heard that the company was previously affiliated with a spyware company. I heard similar rumors about the company behind spywareterminator previously being affiliiated with spyware.

Is comodo 2.4.18.184 a better choice than ZA free ? The upcoming release of comodo (version 3.0) is supposed to have HIPS, so as long as it does not conflict with cyberhawk, I guess I should be OK, or I can do ... Read more

A:My current security combo & Comodo Versus ZA free Firewall

I am currently in a similar position to you, although I got there in a different way!

I was using Win 98 quite happily and had NOD32 and ZA Pro (one of the 6.0 series because it was the last one that worked with '98 and, like you, I had read a lot of stuff about the problems some people were having with the 7.0 series). My 98 computer suffered a terminal crash (due to an error of mine!) and so I now have XP Home. I have made several attempts to get a new d/l of ZAP but without success, probably because my anti-spyware sub expired during the period I was 'offline'.

Like you I was appalled at the prospect of a 38MB d/l for the free version on dialup so I got Comodo. It's too early to make a judgement about whether Comodo is better, worse or just different to ZA, because I'm still very much in the learning process with it. Perhaps a long term Comodo user will respond and give us some feedback?

In cleaning up a mess over on the "HJT log" forum the advisor who helped me out noted that I'm only using the built-in Windows firewall, and that I really need a firewall that can monitor outgoing as well as incoming traffic. Based on my experience, I'm inclined to (belatedly) agree with him. He suggested either ZoneAlarm or PC Tool Firewall Plus.

I'm leaning towards ZoneAlarm, based on what I've heard in the past, but I would like to know if anyone has any experience in running the ZoneAlarm Free firewall with Avast! Antivirus 4.8 (free version). Will they work well together without conflicts? A quick check on Google was inconclusive.

Does anyone have any real-world experience?

I am trying to download this Belkin Advisor program so I can have it tell me the guts of my computer for... who knows whar reason really. I got to get this info to Garmanma for him to help me. I successfully completed the download to my program files and when I clicked to open it I got an error message that read "not a valid Win 32 application". As I've seen this before today I thought maybe I should try opening the file with this new IZarc program to maybe unzip it..? I don't know what I'm doing really. So then I downloaded the Belcan Advisor again but this time I put it in my systems Win32 file and tried to open it from there. That error message read "access to the specified device or path or file is denied". What the heck am I doing wrong now? I re-read the Belcan sites FAQ and there was mention that my "firewall" might be denying something. I don't know that I have a firewall but I do have Avast downloaded on this Win2000 Pro and it's the free version and it seems to run all the time and I have never had this problem before so I don't know the answer. Today I will show you small tip how to deal with avast free ads

Pros:
- No ads in avast UI, and probably no annoying popups
- AV components still work normally. Signatures and program updates are not affected - Tested
- Potentially less resource & bandwidth usage
Cons:
- Avast UI won't be able to connect to the internet: "The online content is unavailable"
- Must be unblocked to register a new 365-day free subscription
- (...to be added if any...)

Screenshots:

Spoiler: Expand

Steps:
1/ Control Panel -> System and Security -> Windows Firewall -> Advanced settings
2/ Outbound Rules -> New Rule -> Program -> Next
3/ ?This Program Path? -> Browse... -> to Avast install directory (usually C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast) -> choose AvastUI.exe -> Next
4/ Block the connection -> Next -> Next
5/ "Name:" -> Type AvastUI -> Finish

You can do similar steps if you use other third-party firewalls, Make sure you block AvastUI.exe

Have fun

I've previously used Avast free antivirus with ZoneAlarm firewall and also with Comodo firewall. I'm currently using Norton Internet Security but was thinking about switching to Avast free antivirus & using the Windows 7 firewall. But I was looking on the Avast forum & it appears people are having a problem with that combination.

I've read through a lot of the threads on this here forum & am left with mixed thoughts. There seems to be some problems & some people are switching from Avast 8 back to Avast 7, or to the latest version of Avast 8 which I have not seen any comments on. And of course some people are not having any problems.

Is there a consensus of opinion on which version of Avast free to use with Win7 Firewall?
If it version 7, where can I download a copy from?

A:Avast free antivirus + Win7 firewall ?

Hi Mike99,

I'm using the latest Avast 8 version with Outpost FW Pro (latest version 8) without any trouble even though they are not compatible. Outpost program files are added to Avast exclusion list.
Both of the above try to do the same thing but I don't allow it.
Outpost FW has 'Web Control' and 'Antispyware' but I don't use them. Avast handles Spyware for me.
Avast has browser plug ins, I don't use them. I use Opendns.
I also use Winpatrol free + WOT in Firefox 19.0.2

I once tried using ZoneAlarm free and Avast on a Windows98 computer. It worked well but I haven't used it long enough to be sure.

I now have a chance to try ZoneAlarm free and Avast free on Windows2000 computer.
I'm uninstalling McAffee firewall and on-access scan (hope it does not leave traces!)

I intend to take the latest Avast, and ZA 6.5.714 (not 722 which is current, but has some issues with the hosts file). There is also Pest Patrol running as resident on this computer, a corporate version, not the one from CA.

I will be using Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D on demand.

Any suggestions? advice? golden thoughts on the mix and installation?

Apologies for the long post.

I am still using windows XP pro, unfortunately. (I tried to create an bootable Ubuntu trial disk at a friend's pc, in order to use the web that way, but unfortunately, my dvd player couldn't fully read the dvd-rom.) Meanwhile, I logged on in this unprotected state, to download a strong firewall like zonealarm.
Obviously, something happened because the next time I booted up to my computer, malwarebytes wouldn't start, Avast free was disabled and "locked" and my firewall (windows) was turned off. I disconnected my LAN, and tried to figure out what to do. I tried rebooting into safe mode, but that did not help.

At some point, I attempted a system restore, which turned out to successfully restore access to my virus protection. I was quite leery about going back online, however.

I ran Avast, and super antispyware, but they found nothing. I set a password for avast free. The next time I turned off and restarted my pc, Avast was again turned off, despite my previous system restore.

I enabled the web connection in order to install zonealarm. However it prevented me from accessing most websites, and I kept getting popups asking to access the web. I have k9 webfilter installed also. It seemed to me that there was some kind of conflict between zonealarm, firefox, and k9filter, although all were listed as trusted in the zonealarm settings. Finally, in frustration, I uninstalled zonealarm and despite the risk I came here to look for... Read more

I currently use ZA Free 7.0.302, but due to the size of it (since the Pro stuff is just turned off) and it possibly acting weird, I was going to use ZA Free 6.5.737 on my replacement laptop coming up instead. Then Comodo Free FirewallVersion 2.4 was recommended to me. But then I saw that it supposedly has a vulnerability that won't be fixed until the next version (if that even).I also see that it says "after downloading and installing the firewall, just register with us and you will be sent a free license. After activation, this license will never expire." -- so what information do you have to provide to register? This firewall stuff kind of makes my head spin since I'm no expert, but I'm trying to decide what I should go with between these two on my replacement laptop. Opinions with explanations understandable by a non-expert are appreciated! I am also considering buying the AVG Internet Security, which seems to include a Firewall. How does that one measure up? I'll have Windows XP Pro, I use Firefox for all internet browsing (except for Windows Updates and the occasional Office Updates), and I have dial-up. Some A/V, antispyware, etc. programs I plan on using are: SpyBot, Ad-Aware SE Free, AVG A/V Free, AVG Antispyware Free, and maybe Comodo BOClean Anti-Malware Version 4.24 and SpywareBlaster. To turn off Windows Firewall, click start>run and type in firewall.cpl then click OK. Click on the circle next to Off(not recommended) then OK.Don't worry, using any firewall other the Windows one is preferable, as Windows only protects you from incoming threats, not outgoing threats!About the vulnerability, there will always be one, no matter what firewall you use, as hijackers and other computer bad guys come up with new tactics....but Comodo has worked fine for me and has even alerted me to the fact i have IRCbot (a backdoor trojan/worm)!!!But about which firewall is better, i don't know. I can't say so because i haven't used the AVG firewall. Avast free vs Bitdefender free for newbies about security. You can sugges other free products that are easy and protect well. Only antivirus.

A:Avast free vs Bitdefender free for newbies

If they absolutely don't know anything ("Hey, what's quarantine? What's scanning? What's definitions?") then Bitdefender without a doubt. If they know basic settings and to tell the difference between false positives than Avast!. I'll have to vote Bitdefender here, but Avast! is a much greater antivirus with those with basic security knowledge.

Update: See below post. I know longer reccommend Bitdefender. +1 to Avast!

hi !

there is a new version of Comodo firewall available, with some new protection, fx. a built-in sandbox.

Download site:
Firewall Software Download | Free Computer Protection

but, why cant i download the firewall "normally" ?

i tried, but i only got the cfwfree_installer.exe: 2,7 MB

when i start it, the installer wants to download the complete firewall, 48,2 MB, and it tells me that: "the present version 3.x must be uninstalled before proceeding."

i?m confused, should i uninstall my firewall and run my computer WITHOUT a firewall while i?m upgrading the firewall ???

WTF ???

of course i always disconnect from the internet while i?m upgrading my security.

is the FULL download available somewhere ?

A:Comodo FREE firewall, "FULL" download ?

yes, i know, but why download from a 3rd party when i can get it directly from comodo ?

problem solved, i?ve downloaded & upgraded now.

Pros:
both offer great protection if tweak optimally.

Cons:
Avast! - I don't like their UI.
Avira - I hate the launcher.

So, I'm choosing a free antivirus software to use on my daily driver (I'm a vary advanced user) and I'm trying to decide between Bitdefender free and avast free.
First, I've heard that Bitdefender is dead/unmaintained/buggy?
Also, I've heard avast is kind if shady, I've heard rumors that when you call tech support they pretend there are problems on your computer to get you to pay money, and that it downloads malware on the users pc (Just rumors I've heard, Not accusing them of anything).
So which do you think I should go with? Thanks

A:Avast Free or Bitdefender Free?

Hi Robo11 First, I've heard that Bitdefender is dead/unmaintained/buggy?It's false. Bitdefender is still actively developped and have quite a good share of the Antivirus market. About the buggy part, it's down to the user's experience. Personally, most of the experiences I had with Bitdefender were quite bad. It was buggy, hogging resources, hard to uninstall, etc. But for some, it might just be the "best Antivirus" they ever used. Also, I've heard avast is kind if shady, I've heard rumors that when you call tech support they pretend there are problems on your computer to get you to pay money, and that it downloads malware on the users pc (Just rumors I've heard, Not accusing them of anything). It's false as well. There's no reputable Antivirus company that would do such a thing. Also, avast! forums offers malware removal assistance in the same kind as BleepingComputer, and there's also UNITE members helping on its forums, so I really doubt that this would ever happen. If you're torn between these two products, since both of them are free, I would suggest you to give them both a try (one after the other, not at the same time) and see for yourself which one you like better. My personal choice goes to avast!, but that's just me. You might also want to consider quietman's advice when it comes to choosing an Antivirus product.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/407147/answers-to-common-security-questions-best-practices/#entry2316629I also noticed that you posted the same thread... I just installed bit defender free edition but I'm alreadt getting confused. I can't find it's settings menu anywhere, when opened from the task bar all it gives is a small window in the bottom right corner, the "my bit defender" box on the page claims i need to register it (but this is the free edition??) and when clicked opens a small box window which just displays white saying "you need to have javascript enabled to view this page". whats more i find this page which suggest bit defender isn't an antivirus at all but rather it is a purely on demand thing like the free edition of malwarebytes, what is going on here? Please explain.Thank You.http://www.bitdefender.com/support/bitdefender-free-edition-549.htmlSee the section marked "important" at the bottom of the page.My machine windows 8.1, previously had AVG but I fully removed that before starting bitdefender's installation.Should i uninstall bitdefender and switch to avast instead?

A:Need some help bitdefender free vs avast free

Can you open the Bitdefender program/interface, then take a screenshot of it to post it here so we can see what you're seeing? Also, many free Antivirus products will ask you to registry in order to use them. So they are free, they just ask you to register yourself in order to be able to use them.

Which antivirus to put a bunch of SpyShelter Premium +Windows Firewall Control(binisoft) ?
Win7 x64 Other ? Thanks

A:BitDefender Antivirus Free vs Avast Antivirus Free vs Avira Antivirus Free

Resource Usage (eg: CPU, RAM): draw, with the indication of Avira, since BitDefender takes overall a little bit less of CPU time, but consumes much more RAM.
Level of Protection and Features (eg: Antivirus , Firewall, Behavior Blocker): Avira has more features, configuration options and is generally more effective when it comes to the malware detection (Proactive and Reactive).
Overall Winner: Avira.
Edit: I've just noticed, that you've added Avast - as the third contestant - to BitDefender and Avira. Still Avira is the winner here. Avast is not too hungry for PC resources and perhaps has more features, but its engine is not so good, and its detection ratio usually lags behind both: BitDefender and Avira.

I thought it would be a good idea in keeping with the overall goal of this site to start a thread to give people a list of legal and secure sites for downloading free or dirt-cheap movies, music and software/games.
I believe this would helpful in terms of not just telling people not to visit/support pirating websites,
but to also give them other alternatives so that there wouldn't be a temptation to go there anyway

A few months ago, my mother bought herself a new laptop and at first she used the free Norton trial for antivirus and firewall protection until it expired, then used the trial version of Kaspersky, which is about to expire. I was thinking about downloading Avast antivirus on to her laptop for her, but as far as I know, it doesn't have a firewall, so I was thinking of also downloading the Comodo firewall.

So my question is this: is Avast antivirus with Comodo firewall a good combination? are they compatible? And do they work well on a laptop? I have heard of some laptops having problems running Avast so I'm not 100% sure about using it, and I'm not sure if there are any compatibility issues between Avast antivirus and Commodo firewall, so that's why I am asking.

I appreciate any help or opinions on this.

My home computer is connected to the internet through a router then a cable modem. I have the router so I can use my laptop (wireless) too.
I use McAfee and ZoneAlarm(free). Not long ago McAfee revamped their software and that is when the problems started. When surfing the net especially ebay your could never get the page to load, or it would do a redirect. It affected the desktop more then the laptop but does affect both. If I shutdown ZoneAlarm everything works fairly well (on both). So my question is do I really need ZoneAlarm or firewall with a Router? I'm not understanding what I'm reading when I try to figure this out for myself.
Also I am looking for a new anti-virus because I am aggravated with McAfee's changes to their software if you have any suggestions. I still have several months left on my subscription but would like to be ready to switch.
Thanks for any info you can provide.

I hope someone can help me to resolve this.

I have just installed Comodo Free Internet Security on my own pc (this is my partner's) and now less than five minutes after I log it on my mouse pad and key board freeze and I can't do anything.

I tried to get as far as control panel to uninstall comodo but it freezes before that point.

I was very careful when searching for the download as have had problems previously with downloads from cnet which seems now to include all sorts of stuff. I went to what I believe was the official site to download it.

My pc is windows 8. I can't see anything on my desktop relating to comodo that I can quickly click and disable but I've not had this pc very long and still getting used to windows 8 so may be missing something.

Can anyone help me?

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/window...-safe-mode.htm
Read this guide carefully and yes go through the pages so you will know how to initiate safe mode in 8 or 8.1.
Once you get access wait for the desktop to load, hit the star button, go click on search.
You type control panel, click that once and wait for it to open.
Navigate to add and remove programs find the program that is comodo and attempt to remove it by its default uninstaller.

May I ask if you have any other antivirus/firewall suite that would conflict with comodo ?

Hi guys

I have the following product installed on my one computer : Comodo CIS 2009 free. (http://www.comodo.com) which is not a rogue antivirus. I want to know how to set it so that a pop up doesn't occour asking me for an action everytime I install programs, is it normal that it does that or is it a security measure that no malware gets installed by mistake? How do I control what applications are allowed and what are blocked?

Regards

Roger

A:Comodo Internet Security Free

It is there so that nothing can be installed without you knowing about it. When you get the pop-up, if you know what it is, select 'Installer or Updater' and then say yes to installation mode. You will usually get one other popup to allow and then it will install quietly.

This is necessary to prevent you suffering a drive by download from an infected website, which are very common now.

With CIS nothing unknown can install itself on your system unless you allow it.

How long have they been around ? Who are they ?

How does their anti-virus free programs compare to AVG, Avira, etc. ?

Good for malware ? How does it compare to MalwareBytes ?

Much thanks, as always,

A:Comodo Free Anti Virus ?

I use COMODO CIS & Firewall but it will not get recommended here on Seven Forums as it's tricky to configure and isn't user friendly.

Properly configured it does indeed block 100% of zero day (unknown) threats but the user needs to know how to identify false positive detections and what to allow when prompted.

It's possible to disable certain features in order to avoid lots of pop ups that require a user to make a decision.

If you want a guide you can find one here:

How to Install Comodo Firewall | Gizmo's Freeware

Edit: As far as I know the free version has the same features as the pro version but without the dedicated help and support that's available in the pro version.

That's because AV-Test is primarily a signature detection test using default settings.

It's not safe to run both of them at the same time if they both installed (assuming Comodo Internet Security also includes an antivirus). This is because having two antiviruses can cause problems with your computer in its performance and compromise the security of your computer.

As for which one is better, it's really a matter of opinion, let alone that I haven't used either of the products.

Hi guys. I've spent this morning testing some AV's with Malware Hub samples, tweaking settings for better protection. I usually use Emsisoft Internet Security, but lastly i'm a bit concerned about its detection and protection against new malware. I have experience with ESET and Kaspersky, but i was looking for a lighter solution, not too bloated. I was a bit surprised, when i tested Avast with Jack's Maximum Protection Guide, that the results were near perfect in all samples i ran on Malware Hub, while other suites, as ESET, Avira or Emsisoft, had worse results. Now, i'm running Avast Free and i wonder what components do you have installed and what cons have you found in a regular use of this AV.

Thanks

A:About Avast Free...

If u want a bloatfree avast just install web and realtime shield. u dont need more to have the core protection moduls and for maximum security. i dont use it anymore but found no cons, it is realy light, one of the stablest av u can have and realy good protection if u tweak it abit. nothing wrong with using avast if someone of my family want a av, i always recomment avast because its easy and can be made to sit and forget.

My Norton 2006 will run out in 15 days and want to replace it. This was a three month trial package installed in my new Dell 530 when I ordered it.

Been looking at AVG 7.5 Free or Avast as free anti virus programs until I can buy either Kaspersky or Bitdefender for fuller protection. I realize AVG and AVAST do not have separate firewalls like Norton does. Something I would miss but was Just tired of Norton's resource hogging that slowed down my new PC to think of renewing it.

But which free one would be better?

This computer is a huge business investment for me after using less than decent computers in the past. Since I also do more than "occasional" gaming (and act as a PC gaming website admin), this one will have to last me for several years if possible.

Dell Inspiron 530
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2ghz
320 HD gig
1 gig RAM
512 Nvidia 8300GS video card

My ordered my computer with WinXP SP2 instead of VISTA

Although I have IE7, my browser of choice is FireFox. RARELY use the IE7.

Ad Aware 2007 is my anti spyware program (used LavaSoft for years) I use my local ISP provider's McAfee "Postini" to filter my email for any virus/spam. WildBlue satellite has just become available to me. But still use dialup occasionally.

Please read it before start: Free Secure Email Certificate

These days when e-mail has become the main means of personal and business communication and stealing information is what trade secret crimes thrive on, the problems of securing email and safeguarding privacy are on everyone's mind.

Even if your job does not imply sending your company's secrets that need to be protected from unwanted eyes, you may look for a little personal privacy. Whatever your reason is, the most reliable ways to secure your communications with co-workers, friends and family are mail encryption and digital signatures. Outlook email encryption protects the contents of your messages against unauthorized reading, while a digital signature ensures that your original message has not been modified and comes from a certain sender.

Encrypting email it Outlook may sound like a daunting task, but it is actually quite simple.

I am not sure but you can try the similar steps on Thunderbird to use the certificate on your mails.

Does the Free Security Combo Comodo IS +SpyShelter can be considered the Best free Security Combo that exists Today?

A:Does the Free Security Combo Comodo IS +SpyShelter can be considered the Best that exists Today?

I wouldnt go as far as stating best combo.

Depending on the user, some will say CIS on its own is the GO TO
Others will toss in anti execs
others will prefer WD + WF + Smartscreen

Spyshelter does include a HIPS module however (free version is limited). To get the most out of SpyShelter, go for Premium or Firewall.

I changed my antivirus to Avast!, and was using AVG. After installing Avast! and re-booting, the stupid clicker keeps having one of those 'loading' timer things appear next to it. I think it has something to do with the antivirus, or my system. If anyone has had this problem or knows how to end it, because it;s REALLY getting on my nerves, advice is gladly accepted!

Someone on chat said I might need a logfile, though I doubt it. Gonna make one and name it Avast! Problem, and link it back here.

A:Avast! Free For Windows Xp Pro

Do you still have AVG installed on the system? It may be the one causing the problems if so uninstall it and try downloading Avast! Again.

I use Avast with my Win 8.1 and have been happy with it til now. I have been getting daily reminders to update my Avast to a premium version and to stop getting the reminders last time, I uninstalled it and reinstalled it making sure I have the Free version downloaded and not a Trail version but it has started to prompt me again after only a few weeks on the new install.

If I have the free version I wouldn't expect to be prompted to upgrade to a paid version or is this what to expect? Is this the same for others that have it?

A:Avast FREE Version....

1. Yes that is what you may expect
However, if you are using Free Antivirus 2015, the only way to disable the sale offers is to upgrade your protection to the paid one.
2. The simple solution is to uninstall AVAST and use the FREE and no sales pop-ups - Windows defender included with 8/8.1
and indeed IMHO your system will run more smoothly and with no problems - as against the use of the FREE Avast.
Avast is good of that there is little doubt, but I am not convinced that the free AVAST is the best for Windows 8.1

With respect to the Best Free Antivirus 2015 competition, I'm starting a thread series where users of the various products will be joining together to state the Pro's and Con's of each antivirus/internet security software and why they think it is a contender or not for the Best Free Antivirus.

How to post your reply?

Each person can post either one Pro or one Con of the product per post. You are free to share your views with respect to that.
One person's Pro/Con can be a matter of debate in the following replies.
Try not to post (Pro/Con) twice in a row just after your previous reply, unless it's necessary.
The first post will be updated by me with what user's think is good and bad about the product, so an informed decision can be made for newcomers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE PRO'S
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Really light on the system
Fully customizable installer: can select features to install
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE CON'S
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many ad's and pop-up's

Hey. I was wondering if Avast! 5.0 Free Edition and ESET Smart Security 4 would conflict with each other or not. I don't know since when I tried using AVG and Avast!, I couldn't connect to the internet. Please help, thanks.

A:Should I use ESET S.S. 4 and Avast! Free 5?

I can only think that you would see conflict between the two programs as they are both Anti-virus. I would say try it and see but make sure you are testing in a sandbox, not leaving your test machine vulnerable.
My 2-cents (not-worth much )

Was recommeded to install Avast as one of the best free AV programs. When doing that I'm told its on a 60 days trial period - in fact with the new 5.0 version only 30days. After that point I should decide if I want to register and start paying. So what's the deal here, is it free or only free for a period?

Hey guys I ran a full format on a PC that I use to download and save drivers. After the format I installed XP sp3, the I installed Avast Free. Well when it came time to Register, I clicked the Register button and a new page opened asking if I upgraded. So I opened Avast, went to Settings, and under General I clicked Registration, and it said, "You Are Registered". My question is, how ? I never filled out the registration, not my name or e-mail address. It never gave me a way to register. Any ideas on what is going on ?

A:Avast Free Registration

Did you have avast installed prior to the format? If so, avast probably stored your prior registration info on their servers so when you connect with them, they can identify you and your computer. I believe its the same info you see when signing into your avast account (https://my.avast.com/en-us/devices) which lists your computer.

I have been using Avast Free Antivirus for more than 4 years without any problems. It quietly does it's job in the background. It has a relatively small footprint and the false positives are extremely low. It's set to automatically update the Engine and virus definitions, and to notify me of Program updates. So far so good...

But, now it's doing things without my knowledge.
1. Avast SafeZone Browser. This downloaded and installed without any input from me - twice! It even added 2 shortcuts to the Start Menu. The folder in Program Files now has a size of 364 MB!

2. Avast Antispam. Also downloaded, installed and disabled Windows Defender (Windows 7) without my permission.

It's always great when free software adds additional features/components but, it's not acceptable when they download and install without the users knowledge.

It might be time to move on...

A:Avast Antivirus Free.

Was that a default install/upgrade? Was there no Advanced/Options checklist available?

Latest Avast Free
Win 10 64

TaskManager - Startup - Startup Impact shows "High".
Do you see the same on your system?

A:How is Avast Free on Win 10 working for you?

Yes, I have Avast! Pro version, and got the same.

But, it does not have a lot of impact and slowdowns on my startup time.. Windows 10 still boots fast.

The title says it all. I am actually using both without issue. Well, I do have one small issue and that is that WD pops up with a message at boot up that it has not been started. I think I can fix that by going into Services and have it start automatically with a delay. But do I really need both? I am using W7-64.

A:Do I need Win Defender if I use Avast Free AV?

Believe it or not there are some threats that a program like Defender will catch that an Anti Virus may miss... With system security, you dont want to take any chances... Use both!

I need to uninstall Avast free but am having problems.

Avast does NOT show on windows Programs and Features. Therefore I can not uninstall it from there. I have Revo Uninstaller but it also does not show up there.

I downloaded aswClear and tried to run it in Safe Mode. Got the error message below.
I also tried to reinstall avast and got the the same error message.

What next?

Thanks

A:Uninstalling Avast free

See if this works ....
Download AVAST Software Uninstall Utility
Special Note: Needs to be started from Safe Mode, the program will offer to reboot you into Safe Mode on launch. If you did not install the Avast product to the default install location, you need to point to it in the box.
