Avast free antivirus + Win7 firewall ?

Q: Avast free antivirus + Win7 firewall ?

I've previously used Avast free antivirus with ZoneAlarm firewall and also with Comodo firewall. I'm currently using Norton Internet Security but was thinking about switching to Avast free antivirus & using the Windows 7 firewall. But I was looking on the Avast forum & it appears people are having a problem with that combination.

I've read through a lot of the threads on this here forum & am left with mixed thoughts. There seems to be some problems & some people are switching from Avast 8 back to Avast 7, or to the latest version of Avast 8 which I have not seen any comments on. And of course some people are not having any problems.

Is there a consensus of opinion on which version of Avast free to use with Win7 Firewall?
If it version 7, where can I download a copy from?

A: Avast free antivirus + Win7 firewall ?

Hi Mike99,

I'm using the latest Avast 8 version with Outpost FW Pro (latest version 8) without any trouble even though they are not compatible. Outpost program files are added to Avast exclusion list.
Both of the above try to do the same thing but I don't allow it.
Outpost FW has 'Web Control' and 'Antispyware' but I don't use them. Avast handles Spyware for me.
Avast has browser plug ins, I don't use them. I use Opendns.
I also use Winpatrol free + WOT in Firefox 19.0.2
See my PC Specs for more.

A:Windows firewall issue - Avast free antivirus stopping it being turned on?

I will attempt to see if the above message will this time finish. I had written out a longer thread than the above and when I posted it stopped abruptly on the second paragraph well before the rest. Even when I repeated it and then copied and pasted it on word it then finished at exactly the same place. And it did the same on wordpad or notepad. The issue I was having occurred after a windows update and I found both disconcerting and rather strange and also very odd that whatever I tried to do it would not post the whole message I had written. I have now done a system restore back to yesterday afternoon, as mentioned in the earlier message of which I could not wholly post, I did not do a system backup restore before updating, which I normally do. I will now attempt to test this message first to see if it posts in its entirety before I repost the original message.
Testing now..

Which antivirus to put a bunch of SpyShelter Premium +Windows Firewall Control(binisoft) ?
Win7 x64 Other ? Thanks

A:BitDefender Antivirus Free vs Avast Antivirus Free vs Avira Antivirus Free

Resource Usage (eg: CPU, RAM): draw, with the indication of Avira, since BitDefender takes overall a little bit less of CPU time, but consumes much more RAM.
Level of Protection and Features (eg: Antivirus , Firewall, Behavior Blocker): Avira has more features, configuration options and is generally more effective when it comes to the malware detection (Proactive and Reactive).
Overall Winner: Avira.
Edit: I've just noticed, that you've added Avast - as the third contestant - to BitDefender and Avira. Still Avira is the winner here. Avast is not too hungry for PC resources and perhaps has more features, but its engine is not so good, and its detection ratio usually lags behind both: BitDefender and Avira.

I have always used Avast and Comodo as my AV/Firewall combination. I find it to be very useful, and although Comodo provides many annoying popups, they are useful and informational (I would consider myself a competent computer user, though no expert).

Recently, I just wanted to see how good my combination was and if there was a better one. I found topics that said of how Avast's web shield completely bypasssed Comodo's rules. I tested this:

1) Block chrome.exe in Comodo completely
2) Check that both Comodo and Avast are updated, and Avast web shield ON
3) Open Chrome and see what happens

Results: At first I thought it was fine, was blocked. Then I tried clicking on bookmarks. would open, would open, etc. I was shocked to find that Comodo was letting these websites open even though chrome.exe was blocked!

After doing some more research, and realizing that this was a big problem, and that many solutions did not work, with avast being blamed or comodo being outdated, or even that Win 7 64 bit was limiting comodo, I tested it again with web shield OFF.

I repeated the process of blocking chrome and opened and other websites. This time all the websites were blocked!

Is there a solution where I can keep web shield on and have comodo be effective in blocking? Or do I need a new firewall?

In cleaning up a mess over on the "HJT log" forum the advisor who helped me out noted that I'm only using the built-in Windows firewall, and that I really need a firewall that can monitor outgoing as well as incoming traffic. Based on my experience, I'm inclined to (belatedly) agree with him. He suggested either ZoneAlarm or PC Tool Firewall Plus.

I'm leaning towards ZoneAlarm, based on what I've heard in the past, but I would like to know if anyone has any experience in running the ZoneAlarm Free firewall with Avast! Antivirus 4.8 (free version). Will they work well together without conflicts? A quick check on Google was inconclusive.

Does anyone have any real-world experience?

I am trying to download this Belkin Advisor program so I can have it tell me the guts of my computer for... who knows whar reason really. I got to get this info to Garmanma for him to help me. I successfully completed the download to my program files and when I clicked to open it I got an error message that read "not a valid Win 32 application". As I've seen this before today I thought maybe I should try opening the file with this new IZarc program to maybe unzip it..? I don't know what I'm doing really. So then I downloaded the Belcan Advisor again but this time I put it in my systems Win32 file and tried to open it from there. That error message read "access to the specified device or path or file is denied". What the heck am I doing wrong now? I re-read the Belcan sites FAQ and there was mention that my "firewall" might be denying something. I don't know that I have a firewall but I do have Avast downloaded on this Win2000 Pro and it's the free version and it seems to run all the time and I have never had this problem before so I don't know the answer. Any help?

Today I will show you small tip how to deal with avast free ads

- No ads in avast UI, and probably no annoying popups
- AV components still work normally. Signatures and program updates are not affected - Tested
- Potentially less resource & bandwidth usage
- Avast UI won't be able to connect to the internet: "The online content is unavailable"
- Must be unblocked to register a new 365-day free subscription
- ( be added if any...)

Spoiler: Expand

1/ Control Panel -> System and Security -> Windows Firewall -> Advanced settings
2/ Outbound Rules -> New Rule -> Program -> Next
3/ ?This Program Path? -> Browse... -> to Avast install directory (usually C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast) -> choose AvastUI.exe -> Next
4/ Block the connection -> Next -> Next
5/ "Name:" -> Type AvastUI -> Finish

You can do similar steps if you use other third-party firewalls, Make sure you block AvastUI.exe

Have fun

Apologies for the long post.
I am still using windows XP pro, unfortunately. (I tried to create an bootable Ubuntu trial disk at a friend's pc, in order to use the web that way, but unfortunately, my dvd player couldn't fully read the dvd-rom.) Meanwhile, I logged on in this unprotected state, to download a strong firewall like zonealarm.
Obviously, something happened because the next time I booted up to my computer, malwarebytes wouldn't start, Avast free was disabled and "locked" and my firewall (windows) was turned off. I disconnected my LAN, and tried to figure out what to do. I tried rebooting into safe mode, but that did not help.
At some point, I attempted a system restore, which turned out to successfully restore access to my virus protection. I was quite leery about going back online, however.
I ran Avast, and super antispyware, but they found nothing. I set a password for avast free. The next time I turned off and restarted my pc, Avast was again turned off, despite my previous system restore.
I enabled the web connection in order to install zonealarm. However it prevented me from accessing most websites, and I kept getting popups asking to access the web. I have k9 webfilter installed also. It seemed to me that there was some kind of conflict between zonealarm, firefox, and k9filter, although all were listed as trusted in the zonealarm settings. Finally, in frustration, I uninstalled zonealarm and despite the risk I came here to look for... Read more

I once tried using ZoneAlarm free and Avast on a Windows98 computer. It worked well but I haven't used it long enough to be sure.

I now have a chance to try ZoneAlarm free and Avast free on Windows2000 computer.
I'm uninstalling McAffee firewall and on-access scan (hope it does not leave traces!)

I intend to take the latest Avast, and ZA 6.5.714 (not 722 which is current, but has some issues with the hosts file). There is also Pest Patrol running as resident on this computer, a corporate version, not the one from CA.

I will be using Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D on demand.

I have been using Avast Free Antivirus for more than 4 years without any problems. It quietly does it's job in the background. It has a relatively small footprint and the false positives are extremely low. It's set to automatically update the Engine and virus definitions, and to notify me of Program updates. So far so good...

But, now it's doing things without my knowledge.
1. Avast SafeZone Browser. This downloaded and installed without any input from me - twice! It even added 2 shortcuts to the Start Menu. The folder in Program Files now has a size of 364 MB!

2. Avast Antispam. Also downloaded, installed and disabled Windows Defender (Windows 7) without my permission.

It's always great when free software adds additional features/components but, it's not acceptable when they download and install without the users knowledge.

It might be time to move on...

With respect to the Best Free Antivirus 2015 competition, I'm starting a thread series where users of the various products will be joining together to state the Pro's and Con's of each antivirus/internet security software and why they think it is a contender or not for the Best Free Antivirus.

How to post your reply?

Each person can post either one Pro or one Con of the product per post. You are free to share your views with respect to that.
One person's Pro/Con can be a matter of debate in the following replies.
Try not to post (Pro/Con) twice in a row just after your previous reply, unless it's necessary.
The first post will be updated by me with what user's think is good and bad about the product, so an informed decision can be made for newcomers.

I've tried many free antivirus over the years, but these two have always consistently been the ones I liked the most.

After some issues with Windows 10 last year, I had to briefly switch to Avira but after the issues were fixed I got back to Avast because it was the one I had learned to rely upon in the last few years. However, I'm open to reassess my position between these two excellent products. Something that has also spurred me to reassess the situation was the fact that LifeHacker has recently changed their recommendation from Avast to Avira as the "The Best (Free) Antivirus App for Windows".

On one hand Avast offers a more complete feature set:

File System Shield
Web Shield
Mail Shield
Behavior Blocker (DeepScreen)

Still, I disable the E-mail blocker because I solely use Web mail. I also disable the Web shield because:

It seems to slightly slow down my browsing
I don't like to have all my HTTP traffic analyzed by the AV or any other program
Sometimes it doesn't play well with HTTPS because it internally to scan the encrypted traffic which changes the original website's certificate (I know I can selectively disable the Web Shield for HTTPS only)

So, in practice, I have been using the File System Shield and the Behavior Blocker at default sensitivity settings (no Hardened Mode) to avoid too many False Positives and issues with less known software. I've had no problems with this set up for a long time.

Regarding Avira, it lac... Read more

avast! continues its series of updates and enhanced antivirus software solutions by delivering streamlined GUIs and several brand-new protection features. avast! Free Antivirus 2015 is one of the products from the antivirus editions (Pro, Internet Security and Premier) that comes with an updated interface and fresh features.

It gives you control over your home network security, supports HTTPS scans for malware and threats, as well as lets you activate a smart scan which looks for threats, updates and other issues.

The Software Updater now automatically pre-downloads software updates in the background without interfering with your work. Plus, it grabs the updates from its own servers, so the process is basically much faster.

MyAvast online console which can be run via your web browser also benefits from updates. It displays a simplified design with widgets and integrates the Rewards program where users receive Karma points and badges for mainly contributing to the online community.

They need to work more on the Suspicious Behavior (HIPS), some malware can bypass it.

I have had avast! for a few months now and loved it...until a few weeks ago, I noticed that it had stopped working. When I open avast! it says my system is unsecured and to re-start avast. When I click the start now button, it opens a box wanting me to allow avast to make changes to my hard drive. Even after clicking yes, it still won't start. I even tried un-installing avast and it won't let me. Anyone know how I can either fix this or remove it? Not to computer smart when it comes to codes & computer language (so the easier to understand the better )

Let me start off by saying I am new to this forum (first post) and not technologically inclined AT ALL, but my new years resolution was to immerse myself in things that I do not fully understand so here I am
Alright... so my computer has been moving mega slow (start-up is slow, freezing when watching things online) so I initially ran a complete system scan using my free Avast Antivirus software, and sure enough threats were detected. I was prompted to run a 'boot-time scan' which is currently under way (i'm using my netbook to write this). I have been writing down some of the infections coming up and researching them for more details, and this forum is where I have ended up.
Some if the infections that are coming up are as follows:
     -WIN32:PUP's (oneclickdown-A/searchprotect-A/installer-K)
-DLL error 42127 (CAB archive is corrupted)
-CAB error 42144 (OLE archive is corrupted)
     -NSIS:oneclick-D [pup]
I would like assistance understanding ...
     -what these infections are??
-How do I determine whether to repair vs. delete ??

Real-time Protection
For some antivirus products, the minimal file access that occurs when Windows Explorer displays the filename is sufficient to trigger real-time protection. Avast waits until just before a program executes to run a real-time scan. In testing, it wiped out almost 80 percent of my malware samples immediately on launch.

Avast detected most of the remaining samples at some point as they attempted to install and run. In a couple of cases, it activated a powerful analysis tool called DeepScan. Avast also invoked DeepScan to make sure that a couple of my malware-testing programs weren't themselves malicious.

In one case, fortunately the last sample I tested, Avast requested a boot time scan for complete cleanup. That scan took almost an hour, and required my attention every so often to make decisions about the disposition of particular malware traces. You can launch a boot time scan at will, if you suspect the regular scan has missed something.

One way or another, Avast detected 93 percent of my samples, the same asF-Secure Anti-Virus 2015. However, because Avast allowed installation of some executable malware traces, its final score came out to 9.0 points, while F-Secure managed 9.3. The absolute winner among products tested with this sample set is Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus (2015), which earned 10 of 10 possible points.

Avast's previous edition was among the first products exposed to my malicious URL blocking test. For many, many months, its... Read more

I am using "Avast Antivirus Free 2015".When i ran the Full System Scan, the Antivirus didn't found a single Virus or Malware.

I had seen somewhere on youtube that, having "Malwarebytes Anti Malware" works great along with your regular Free/Complete Antivirus Software for complete protection. So,i installed "Malwarebytes Anti Malware".After scanning,it detected almost 85 PUP Malwares, which i quarantined with the help of "Malwarebytes Anti Malware".I would like to mention that the "Scan for potentially unwanted programs (PUPs)" is check Marked in my Avast, which you can see from the attached Picture # 2 (Below) of Avast General Settings.

Now,does this means that my Free Avast Antirus 2015 isn't effective OR PUP Malwares are no big deal?

A:Almost 85 PUP Malwares not Detected by Avast Free Antivirus 2015....

Avast is one of the best free Anti-virus programs out there. You need a few different tools to get everything off of your PC. Avast doesn't typically scan for PUPS by default, typically I believe you have to place a checkmark in the box you show for Avast.

Avast is going to be really good at blocking viruses above all else. You will want to continue to scan with Avast and Malwarebytes as well as programs like Superantispyware, Adwcleaner and/or Junkware removal tool. Now as a warning, running all of these, even if up to date, does not ensure a clean system.. There are a lot of places to look and clean on an infected computer.

I've read in the pinned topic "List of Antivirus Uninstallers and Removal Tools > Antivirus removal tools"  at the top of this section about antivirus removal and It says to always use add/remove to uninstall programs from the computer. But when I go to the Avast site it says that the preferred method of uninstalling is to use their uninstall utillity. I'd like to say that I'm not having any issues with Avast nor am I unhappy with the product. I'm uninstalling because I want to try the free trials of Kaspersky and BitDefender and make a decision after that.
I've read a few times across multiple forums of people having problems uninstalling Avast so before I start I would like some feedback on which process I should go through to have the best chance of uninstalling without problems. I'm using Vista if this info is needed. Thanks

A:How do I uninstall Avast Antivirus Free 2015 properly?

Hi there,The Avast uninstall utility (AvastClear) is only to be used if the uninstallation of Avast products go wrong and left behind remnants on the system.I do suggest that you uninstall it the normal way using Programs and Features - preferably in Safe Mode since the service will not be running and less likely to leave behind trash. If it refuses to uninstall in Safe Mode (programs that depended on the Windows MSI service to uninstall will not work), do a clean boot and uninstall Avast from there. After that run AvastClear.Hope this answers your questions.Regards,Alex

I was recently browsing People of Walmart when I get a message from Avast stating that malware has been blocked. I'm going to guess that it was from an banner ad on the site because the site that it originated from was not People of Walmart, but somethink called Afnolink. That was the only site I was browsing at the time. But when I check the statistics for Web Shield, it says there has been no blocked malware. I've checked all other Shield statistics and they are all clean. So, where did the info for it go? Does this mean that it was not sucessfully blocked?
P.S: If this is in the wrong section, I'm sorry.

A:Avast Free Antivirus not showing blocked malware

I actually don't see a section for blocked malware. I do see a part where it shows number of scanned pages and number of infected pages. This is under Shield Traffic in the Web Shield area. What does the "infected pages" number show?

A few months ago, my mother bought herself a new laptop and at first she used the free Norton trial for antivirus and firewall protection until it expired, then used the trial version of Kaspersky, which is about to expire. I was thinking about downloading Avast antivirus on to her laptop for her, but as far as I know, it doesn't have a firewall, so I was thinking of also downloading the Comodo firewall.

So my question is this: is Avast antivirus with Comodo firewall a good combination? are they compatible? And do they work well on a laptop? I have heard of some laptops having problems running Avast so I'm not 100% sure about using it, and I'm not sure if there are any compatibility issues between Avast antivirus and Commodo firewall, so that's why I am asking.

I appreciate any help or opinions on this.

Hello, I'm new here. I just clean installed Windows 10 and am wondering what AV to use. I've used avast! free for the last 3 years (windows 7 and 8), but now that I'm on a new sparkly clean OS, I've decided to reevaluate and survey the field for cheap or preferably free options. Panda , Avast, Avira, BitDefender, etc.

It seems to me, from what I've read, the most balanced in terms of zero day and general protection (online or off) is Avast (talking about across the board protection, heuristics/behavior/signtatures/yada yada, avast just got HIPS too). Comcast offers Norton for free though, a full security suite. Norton is never mentioned as a top contender nowadays. However, how does it compare to avast free? Thanks folks!

A:AVAST Free Antivirus 2015‎ vs Norton Security Suite

Hello welcome to MT

I 'd pick Avast free, I'm used to its settings... and with hardened mode can protect more effective. Its been a while since I used Norton. It was pretty good when I used it.

It depends on if you want a change or go with what you know... but both are light and decent choices.

Tonight I received the following error message when I tried repeatedly, but unsuccessfully, to update my free version of Avast antivirus:

Error processing packages.

Finally, I gave up trying. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled the free version of Avast. The program installed without any problem; however, for some reason I've thus far been unable to install the latest update, either automatically or manually. Although the onscreen indication read "Initializing, please wait," I waited 15 minutes and nothing happened.

Shortly thereafter, I received an automatic onscreen prompt from Avast to upgrade, but after one minute I got the following error message:

Last encountered error:
Invalid File Signature. Setup will terminate.

I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who may help me solve this problem. Thank you

Today, I wanted to check out avast! Pro Antivirus latest Sandbox settings, but things took a turn for the worse. On a clean install of Windows 8.1 32-bit, I downloaded 3 malware packs from the Virus Exchange, but soon realised they were compressed as .7z. Windows natively only supports .zip files.

I headed to 7-zip's website to download the standard version, which redirected me to the file hosted on SourceForge (this is normal).

At first, I clicked on Run, but IE notified the file may have been moved or deleted. Next I tried to Save As and then I got this Warning from Avast! Pro Antivirus, telling me the version I am trying to download is outdated.

If I choose to "Download the Latest Version", it redirects me to Softonic and the download starts automatically (IE prompts for Run or Save As) for "SoftonicDownloader_for_7-zip.exe" at 378KB.

Now I have a Softonic Adware Installer running without avast! warning me of PUPs and the original developers version blocked.

To prove I didn't delete the file from SourceForge, it's here on the desktop.

I cannot be more disappointed! These are default settings in avast! Pro Antivirus, with a custom install consisting of the File and Web Shield and Sandbox. All other Shield and Tools are not installed. Note: PUP detection is disabled by default.

I also found this thread on the Avast Forums,

A:avast! Pro Antivirus, Fake Warnings, Softonic Partnership and Free Adware!

Further looking, I discovered it was the setting in the Reputation Services. I would advise any avast! user to un-check this for the time being.

[x] Check for newer versions when downloading installation files.
When checked, your avast! will identify any outdated software version you may be trying to download and will prompt you to download the latest version instead.

Hi, I have been using free versions of AVG antivirus and Zone Alarm firewall for some time now and, possibly by good fortune, have had no problems whatsoever with any nasty things that can come to you in today's online environment however recently I have noticed a noticeable slowing in performance of the network (I have 2 desktops and 3 laptops on a home network, 1 -wired and the others wireless). I regularly run scans of AVG and MalwareBytes on them all but was wondering if any of these packages could actually be using a lot of my network resource just by working in the background and if anyone could suggest alternatives ?

A:Best free antivirus/ firewall

AVG led the way in free anti-virus software, but have unfortunately in recent times not been as well regarded as they used to be. Malwarebytes is an excellent product with low resource usage.

I recommend uninstalling AVG and trying Microsoft Security Essentials. Give it a try and see if it improves your network performance.

I would also turn on Windows Firewall.

First, thank you for your reading.
I want to ask you about the better setting for building secure PC on Windows 10 as a consumer.

I am using Bitdefender Total Security 2017 as the main anti-malware software and firewall software on my PC. It looks good.

But at sometimes, Bitdefender is heavy a little, especially when updating signatures.
And booting time of my PC is long. Updating time at start up Windows is also long. I think it.

So I seaching another security softwares for my PC, and I find some softwares which I guess that it is good for using PC. The soft is Avast Free 2016, and Microsoft EMET or Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free Edition.

Which is better, Avast Free 2016 or Bitdefender Security 2017. I will use EMET or MBAE for covering protection of vulnerability when I use Avast Free.

What is Bitdefender and Avast Free regarded as security software for Windows 10 Consumers?
Which software do many people regard as a good solution?
I heard that Bitdefender is getting very high level score in many tests, but it is heavy for many PC.
And I aloso heard that Latest Avast Free gives security enough for many consumers, but sometimes do false detection, and it may be serious for OS at sometimes.
Please teach me about above things. I guess my English is not well, but I will read all replies from everyone. If I will be late replyng you. excuse me.

Thank you!

I've used to use Kaspersky Internet Suite 6 before, and I just found it totally amazing, the best all-in-one security program I need, unfortunately I cant pay for it anymore.. so I'm looking around for something new.

I've tried Zonealarm + Avast! but they just didn't work well at all. Right now I'm using comodo as my firewall and NOD32 as antivirus.

With comodo, I feel that sometimes its not giving me the proper protection, I donno it's just a feeling that the default network monitor settings don't secure me. I had to manually turn off ports 135, 445, 139, 69, 4444 because of a crash I would have pretty often and after hours of research on the net.

The problem I have with NOD32 isn't security, its more of resources. Everyone says that NOD32 uses the least amount of resources, but right now EKRN is at 27,704k mem usage. That in itself isn't so bad, but the problem is when I browse online, or download torrents, the CPU usage just shoots up. I trolled the forums a bit and disabled web access protection and http filter but it still takes up alot of CPU when firefox is open and browsing.

Any suggestions?

My computer recently received the gift of this virus:AntiVirus Soft: my twin sister's boyfriend has a degree in Computer security so he ran ComboFix and gave me a few things to download.Prior to the attack I had Spyware Doctor, Malware Bytes, and AVG 9.0 installed and I ran them every few days.AntiVirus Soft made me unable to open any of these and tried to prompt me to buy a new antivirus. Needless to say, I didn't.So after my computer was somewhat fixed, I installed COMODO Internet Security as well as Microsoft Security Essentials. They are both running at startup and it takes forever for Firefox to open (1-3+ minutes) and everything lags more than before the virus. After the huge fiasco was over I scanned my computer with Microsoft Security Essentials and it came up with this:Exploit:Java/CVE-2008-5353.CTrojan:Java/Selace.MIt removed these items.I then scanned with Malware Bytes and it came up clean.Still, my computer lags way more and I can't re-install Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9 (which wouldn't open so I removed it) because of a 1311 error. It also won't let me open Frostwire and prompts something about quarantines or firewalls when I try to.I now have both COMODO and Microsoft Security Essentials running at start up. My friend says it is bad to have more than one running at once- so which do I choose? I am completely stupid when it comes to this. Haha. One website says:"1. Make sure you have an Antivirus... A:Which free antivirus/firewall/antispyware scanner is best?

Personally, I would recommend using either Avira AntiVir Free/Personal edition or avast! for an antivirus program, just be sure that you only have 1 anti-virus program installed on your machineFor a firewall I would recommend Comodo, please note that the Comodo firewall installation also includes an Anti-virus program, if you decide to choose another anti-virus (not Comodo), then please be sure to only install the firewall, you will be prompted during installation if you want to install just the firewall, or the firewall and the anti-virus.The on-demand anti-malware scanners I recommend are Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAnti-Spyware.For additional protection, SpywareBlaster is a great program to protect you from visiting malicious sites, and blocking tracking cookies. Note that SpywareBlaster isn't an actively running program. You download it, run it once, and then make sure you update it every week or 2 and you will always be protected. It works by tweaking some IE and Firefox settings to block tracking cookies and provide additional protection.

I use a third-party firewall that allows full control.

But some of my friends use the firewall built in to Window 7. To each their own.

I've taken a look at that firewall, and it's actually fairly flexible.

It has quite of bit of incoming traffic blocked by default, but leaves outgoing traffic wide open. I want to help them restrict outgoing traffic on their systems.

Many of them use Avira's free antivirus. I would like to configure their Windows 7 firewall (aka Windows Firewall with Advanced Security) to work with Avira, while still blocking as much outgoing traffic as possible for them.

Blocking all outgoing traffic with the Windows firewall is trivial, but I haven't found any documentation on Avira's site on how they recommend configuring the Windows 7 firewall to work with their product (perhaps because they want you to buy their pro version that has a firewall, but as of this post, their pro firewall does not even support IPv6!).

So before I reinvent the wheel and figure it out myself, has anyone already set up the Windows 7 firewall's outgoing traffic rules to work properly with Avira free antivirus (that is, not break it or impair its functionality in any way)?

Also, interestingly, I see no Incoming Rules for the Windows 7 firewall for Avira on their systems. How is this possible given that they regularly get program and definition updates?

Suggestions, advice, and/or information needed for a good free anti-virus and personal firewall. "Free" meaning . . . free installation and free updates.

I have heard about Avast!, AVG, Zone Alarm, and Sygate. Are there other free anti-virus and personal firewall that may be much better than these?

1. Which is the better anti-virus: Avast! or AVG?
2. Which is the better personal firewall: Zone Alarm or Sygate?

Would appreciate personal experiences and/or links to websites (unless this forum prohibits such information from being shared), which may address my concerns and where I may be able to download the recommended anti-virus and personal firewall.

As additional information, I have 3 PCs at home with 3 different OS, where I plan to use the free anti-virus and personal firewall.
1. Windows XP Professional Edition
2. Windows 98 SE
3. Windows 2000

Although all PCs have DSL connections to surf the internet, there are times I use dial-up connections. The PCs have LAN cards, but I have not networked them . . . though I plan to do that later on, once I learn how to do it.

I use the PCs on the internet primarily to email and to search for information. I hardly use the PCs for network gaming.

A:Windows Keeps Reporting that Antivirus is Turned Off, and cannot enable real-time shields on Avast! free version.

Hello and Welcome to Bleeping Computer!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE:... A:Zone Alarm Free Firewall Works Well with Win7?

It is a fine product, but in my help to members with BSOD problems, Zone Alarm has been suspected as the cause in several instances.

A:ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall Version: released:

Hi Littlebits. Your post prompted me to read user reviews for ZoneAlarm. The toolbar fix may rectify the most common complaint expressed by users. Since we use Bitdefender Free, Malwarebytes, Zemana Anti-logger, & Windows Firewall for our Windows 8.1 system, I wanted to ask: 1) What are your thoughts on ZoneAlarm? ..and 2) Do you see weaknesses in this, our computer's (freeware) armor?

Should I keep it?
So far it's lighter than WD and Baidu.
The two of which let malware slip in and destroy an install of Windows before I could react. And so far every firewall test I've ran has been superb vs. Windows Firewall.

I'm not all too worried about HTTP scanning or "the cloud" either. Since if need be I can just use Traffic Light or Avira Browser Safety in combination with Adguard. (I made the jump to chrome) just that it has better protection then Baidu or MSE/WD and will block something if it gets passed my browser be it on-access or when I run a scan.

I'm also curious because many testers elsewhere have given the Pro version which only adds 4 functions I really don't think there's much need for (at least in my usage case. I've only ever gotten infected from malvertisements) really high (on par with BD and the like, higher than AVG and Avira). (Score of 99%).

A:Opinions on Zone Alarm Free Firewall + Antivirus 2015?

i would not use the av module. the firewall is fine but the av is realy mediumcore/bad. low detection rate and not up to date kasperskys signatures. if u get infected with top avs than its not the av fault, maybe u should learn abit what to install and what to click on the internet. i would uninstall zonealarm av/firewall and would go with something like Panda, avast, qihoo, avg or avira. all nice fee avs with decent protection. if u want a firewall u can try out comodo firewall, private firewall or online armor. all have hips modules so u will get pupops and need to understand them.

I have an older computer, Compaq Presario 4770 with a Pentium 200 processor, 32 MB RAM, running Windows 98. I am looking for FREE firewall and antivirus programs that will run on my system. I have tried Avast, AVG, and Zone Alarm, but they all require a faster processor and won't work properly. I cannot afford upgrading or buying new. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can try?

A:Need Help Finding Free Antivirus And Firewall Programs For Older Computer

AntiVir Personal Edition Classic 7. It has the highest detection rate of the freebie antiviruses. It does not have a e-mail scanner but that should not be a problem if you configure it for optimum protection. Take off scan boot sectors only. Put everything at the highest option. It uses very low resources but I am not sure if it wil run so you should try it out

Avast Free Antivirus vs Windows Defender and Windows Firewall.
I almost never use Avast as an On Demand Scanner anyway just protection. What do you guys think?
Which is better when it comes to the following:

Resource Usage (eg: CPU, RAM)
Real World System Impact
Level of Protection and Features (eg: Antivirus , Firewall, Behavior Blocker)
Overall Winner

A:Avast Free vs Windows Defender and Windows Firewall

If we're talking about Windows "10" Firewall/Defender, I might be inclined to go with Windows Defender/Firewall + some other realtime prot like Zemana over Avast AV. However, if we're talking about Windows 7, I'd go with AVAST. In my circumstances as a W7 user, I'd go with AVAST.

I had Avast Internet Security for about 3 years. Recently, I had a computer problem and took my computer to Best Buy's Geek Squad. They installed Webroot, and uninstalled Avast. I am glad they did. Avast had automatically renewed my subscription last year and the year before, and altlhough I e-mailed them several times, I couldn't reach them to tell them that I did not want the installation. I don't want Avast anymore, but am afraid that, in the fall of this year when my present subscription expires (although the program is no longer on my computer), they will reinstall avast and automatically charge my credit card again. I need to be able to talk to someone who will assure me that this will not happen. Does anyone know how I can accomplish this and be done with Avast?

Many, many thanks for your help!

A:Solved: Must contact Avast antivirus people, make sure they don't reinstall Avast.

Hi! I would call my credit card company and tell them to stop the payment to Avast. If you have uninstalled Avast, they can't install it. You would have to install it.

Yesterday I used the Avast uninstaller - avastclear or such name -  to uninstall Avast trial software.  I then installed BitDefender Total Security trial yesterday.
This morning in my BitDefender Event Log, I see this entry:
The application C:\program files\common files\av\avast! antivirus\backup.exe attempted to connect to the Internet using TCP protocol on port 49etc.  Bitdefender Firewall has granted access for this application.
The next entry, about 24 minutes later was:
Firewall module status changed
Firewall has been enabled
I did nothing to disable the Firewall and have a question for BitDefender, but I am miffed that Avast is still slinking around on my computer after I uninstalled it.
Is that legal for them to do that?  How can I get ALL Avast off my computer?
Thanks for help in understanding this.

A:Uninstalled Avast but "avast! antivirus\backup.exe" accessed network

Backup.exe is distributed by emergency update to all avast the explanation by petr_matrix, Avast team in this avast topic. Did you use Windows Explorer to physically search for and confirm that backup.exe is still in that location?Yesterday I used the Avast uninstaller - avastclear or such name - to uninstall Avast trial software.Did you run avastclear in safe mode...per these instructions? If not, that may explain why it was not removed.BitDefender Total Security includes a Firewall. Anti-virus vendors which offer suites with a Firewall allow their programs to manage Windows Security Center & Firewall by default so it has complete control in order to prevent conflicts and duplicate warnings. This management action is normally taken during installation and many users are unaware of this fact. Windows 8/10 Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials are also typically disabled when installing third-party anti-virus software.

Sophos Home Free Antivirus vs Panda Free Antivirus 2016. Which one do you pick and why?

A:Sophos Home Free Antivirus vs Panda Free Antivirus 2016

I have to say that I haven't tried Sophos until now. But my opinion about Panda goes like this.

Resource Usage (eg: CPU, RAM)?Panda is efficient in both of them, but during scans it may use more CPU resources

Real World System Impact?Quiet Low

User Friendliness? 5/5

User Interface? 5/5

Level of Protection and Features (eg: Antivirus , Firewall, Behavior Blocker)?4/5
Overall Winner? Since i haven't tried Sophos I cannot give verdict for the best between the two.

Thankyou And Happy New Year.

Avast and SecureAPlus have been fairly interesting for me. Both seem to have great scanning and protection. Which would you choose?
NOTE: I have heard that SecureAPlus may have a really slow scan in the beginning. If that something you don't like that fine, Avast has a slow scan as well so I am not counting against either one.

I had previously installed NORTON SECURITY and accidentally uninstalled it. It would not open after re-installation. Now AVG free and AVAST free will not open from download. Win 7pro

A:AVG free AVAST free NORTON SECURITY will not open

first off you should only have one anti virus program installed on your computer. did you use norton's uninstall tool ? run the tool , restart , run the tool the second time.

I am running avast free, spybot s&d free. should I turn off windows defender? What about malwarebytes pro instead of spybot? will more then 1 antispyware program slow down my computer?

A:avast free,spybot s&d free and win defender

I haven't used spybot in many years, it got too glitchy and difficult to use for me...
I tested several Anti Malware programs years ago and chose Malwarebytes (MBAM) Pro, no regrets here.
If you're thinking of MBAM paid, you should get the PRO Lifetime license while you still can. - malwarebytes pro

MBAM Premium (Ver 2) is an annual license (yearly fees).
I don't use Windows Defender, I use MBAM real time on all my systems.

For additional "real-time security" I also use:
WinPatrol - WinPatrol- Ruiware, LLC
EMET - Download Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit v3.0 from Official Microsoft Download Center

On April 8, I took down Microsoft Essentials and downloaded free Avast.

I also have Century Link and failed to explore if they had free anti-virus, which turns out, they have Norton.

That said, should I stay with free Avast or transfer to free Norton?

Thank you.

A:Solved: Free Norton vs. Free Avast on my XP

what version of norton are they offering for free ?

you will get a lot of different opinion with that question, also products change over time, for example MSE was one of the better products late last year, but is slowly falling down the comparison sites tests.

here are some comparison sites

Avast free vs Bitdefender free for newbies about security. You can sugges other free products that are easy and protect well. Only antivirus.

A:Avast free vs Bitdefender free for newbies

If they absolutely don't know anything ("Hey, what's quarantine? What's scanning? What's definitions?") then Bitdefender without a doubt. If they know basic settings and to tell the difference between false positives than Avast!. I'll have to vote Bitdefender here, but Avast! is a much greater antivirus with those with basic security knowledge.

Update: See below post. I know longer reccommend Bitdefender. +1 to Avast!

Hello everyone, which one do you think is better? Personally I would choose and use Avast because Avire has terrible 0-day protection and heuristics but what do you think, and does anyone know why their file scanner is called Luke Filewalker?

A:Avast Free vs Avira Free

both offer great protection if tweak optimally.

Avast! - I don't like their UI.
Avira - I hate the launcher.

I've been reading so much about these two AVs and just cannot make up my mind which would work best on my Vista HP. Can I run them side by side as one webpage suggested? Or will that throw a spanner in the works?

I'd appreciate some advice please as although I have Avast at the moment I don't find it particularly easy to work out.

I just installed bit defender free edition but I'm alreadt getting confused. I can't find it's settings menu anywhere, when opened from the task bar all it gives is a small window in the bottom right corner, the "my bit defender" box on the page claims i need to register it (but this is the free edition??) and when clicked opens a small box window which just displays white saying "you need to have javascript enabled to view this page". whats more i find this page which suggest bit defender isn't an antivirus at all but rather it is a purely on demand thing like the free edition of malwarebytes, what is going on here? Please explain.Thank You. the section marked "important" at the bottom of the page.My machine windows 8.1, previously had AVG but I fully removed that before starting bitdefender's installation.Should i uninstall bitdefender and switch to avast instead?

A:Need some help bitdefender free vs avast free

Can you open the Bitdefender program/interface, then take a screenshot of it to post it here so we can see what you're seeing? Also, many free Antivirus products will ask you to registry in order to use them. So they are free, they just ask you to register yourself in order to be able to use them.
