A: Can not turn on firewall, error 0x6d9

GianniR,

Let's try to find the cause...

Please use the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Download: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/
Select the version that applies to your system.
Save it to your Desktop.

Double-click the downloaded file to run it.
When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.

Press the Scan button.

The tool makes a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory from which the tool is run (Desktop).
Please provide the FRST.txt in your reply.

The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log: Addition.txt
Also post the Addition.txt in your reply.

Next, download the Farbar Service Scanner

Save to the Desktop Make sure the following options are checked:Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center
Windows Update
Windows Defender

Press: Scan
FSS creates a log, FSS.txt, on the Desktop.
Please provide the FSS.txt in your reply

Ok - I'm trying to fix my friends' computer - Toshiba Satellite L455-S5975 running Windows 7 32-bit

Windows firewall is off and I need to "Update Firewall Settings". When I click use recommended settings, I get a message that says it "can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070424" I get the same thing when I click on "Turn Windows Firewall on or off" and "Restore Defaults"

When I click on "Advanced Settings" I get "There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in" followed by it "failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer you are managing. Error code 0x6D9."

I scanned the computer using both Avast and Microsoft Safety Scanner (full scan and took over 2 hours) - no infections or issues found

I installed all Microsoft updates and followed suggested restarts.

I ran Microsoft Fix It and I get a message that the firewall isn't running or stopped and it can't be fixed.

I have gone into services as an administrator to try and start Windows Firewall...it isn't there - not in the list of services (local)

I also used SlimDrivers to update all the drivers on the computer.

What I am not seeing is how to uninstall and reinstall Windows Firewall...any other program or hardware issue, that would seem to be the easiest solution - but I have yet to see how to do that with Windows Firewall.

I even started the computer in safe mode... Read more

Every time I try to start my firewall from the control panel, no matter what I press, I always get the same screen telling me to update my settings with a red bar on the side.

If I click on advance settings however, it opens the windows firewall with advance security screen and tell me that there was an error with snap-in and gives me the error code 0x6d9.

I have already tried starting the windows firewall service while in administrator mode but it also gives me and error 'service specific error code 5'.

I have run out of ideas.

It took me some time to notice this error and other than it being annoying to me it's not really effecting my PC much. The picture below is the error that shows. What I have done...

Tried starting the service manually a number of different ways and the service will seem to start for a moment then stop.
When I go to the Windows Firewall settings an click Use Recommended Settings. It doesn't seem to actually do anything. I'm assuming it tries to start the service and then stops.
There are no types of viruses, root-kits, malware, etc on the PC.
Ran the SFC with no issues.

What I think happened is that I had Bitdefender Total Security on my system. I decided I didn't want to renew so I uninstalled it, but instead of using their uninstaller I used Revo Uninstall Pro to do it because I always trace any programs I install with it. I think I may have gotten to click happy and maybe fudged something up Windows uses for its firewall. But the issue could of always been there I just never noticed because I used Bitdefender's firewall.

Can anyone assist?

A:0x6D9 Windows Firewall error

Sure. Download the .bat file I attached and run it as Administratior.

After if finishes running open the run box (windows key +r) and type "services.msc" hit ok.

Find Windows Firewall in the list right click on it and chose properies and make sure the startup type is automatic. If it's stopped then click start and then ok.

Now from the run box type "msconfig" under the services tab find Windows Firewall make sure it's checked then click apply and ok and exit without a restart.

Now Windows firewall should be in working order.

Hello everyone,
My firewall doesn't start anymore. The problem started after removing the damn iStartSurf (virus or whatever threat that is). I used adwcleaner_3.310.exe ( What is adwcleaner_3.310.exe ? | System Explorer ) that is the one that, I suppose, really removed the problem and then Malwarebytes Anti-Malware just in case. This last didn't find anything as I was expecting. (these steps are part of a guide for removing iStartSurf)

After rebooting, because adwcleaner finished its task, installing the anti-malware, while scanning with the latter I saw (not sure it wasn't already there since the log in) the control center complaining about the firewall off.
I thought because of the scanning. At the end of the scan I couldn't turn the firewall on anyway.

I have followed a lot of guides and used different "fixing tools"... but nothing.

---------------------
My Configuration:
windows 8.1
Avira antivir
standard windows firewall
removed malwarebytes
removed adwcleaner
------------------------

Error reported:
- If I try to start the firewall from servises.msc it give me the error code 13
- If I try to open the advanced settings of the firewall from the control panel I get the error code 0x6D9
I don't know anymore what to do.
Guys help me, please!

With malwarebytes and AVG free 2013, I have removed some bad stuff from the computer, but Windows Firewall gives error code 0x6d9 when I open it to turn it on. I also am unable to download files. Firefox simply cancels the downloads. IE will not download either. Says security settings do not allow it (or such). Thoughts on remedying or seeing if anything else is on the computer? Malwarebytes shows nothing else. Thank you.

Hello!

I just did a fresh clean install of Windows 10. I was just installing all my programs back and then suddenly I get an error saying Windows Firewall is not working. In detail it says;

The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer that you are managing. Error code: 0x6D9.

My options are to use "recommended settings" but it does not work.

Everything that I have search on the internet gives me solutions to other previous versions of windows and nothing on this error with Windows 10!

I have not installed any additional virus software, i'm just using whatever windows 10 provides me.

Please help, I don't want to have to do yet another clean install!

Thank you

Hi, I'm running Windows 7 64-bit (I think) and I cannot run Windows Updater or switch on Windows Firewall. On a possibly related note, Windows .NET framework refuses to install or work properly on my PC.

Windows Updater: When I attempt to check for updates the updater simply says that the "service is not running" I have been unable to turn the service on by any method I have tried. Whenever I run the inbuilt troubleshooter and recommended Microsoft Fixit files, they merely say they have either fixed the problem or not detected the problem. Sadly, this isn't the case as the problem has not been resolved at all. When I ran the troubleshooter recently, it provided a report which I have attached as a .pdf in the hope it may help lead to a solution.

Windows Firewall: The Firewall says is is 'Not running reccommended settings' and will not restore those recommended settings if I ever click the button to 'fix' the issue. If I open 'Windows Firewall with Advanced Security' the program merely states "there was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in. The Windows Firewall with advanced security snap-in failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer you are managing. Error Code: 0x6D9

I have seen that these issues have been solved on this forum before without system resets and hope such a solution is possible for my computer.
Thanks for your time,
Joel.

A:Help?: Cannot Update Windows & Firewall Not Working (Error 0x6D9)

First of all, welcome to BC !

The firewall and updater problems are very common symptoms of malware infection. Your best bet is to post this problem in the 'Am I infected?' section of BC and get any question of malware resolved before going looking for other possible solutions.

When you post there, include the make and model of your computer, as well as your operating system. If it is self-built, then list the main specs. And be patient !  These people are busy !  And if you are asked to do something which you don't understand, post back to them for clarification.

Hello,

I have a problem that other users have already described here (and been able to remedy with assistance):  the Windows Firewall on my laptop does not work any more -- I cannot configure it through the control panel, and when I try to open it, it shows the message:

"The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer that you are managing [obviously, that is not possible].  Error code: 0x6D9."

My operating system is Windows 7, 64bit version.  All recent Windows updates are installed.  I have Malwarebytes installed and ran a scan recently, with no results except for one tracking cookie.  I also have Sophos Antivirus installed, which also did not find anything when I ran a scan.

Perhaps somebody could be so generous and tell me what I could do about this?

Cheers,
Daniel

Hi!
Our laptop, which my mother and brother use the most, seems to be infected, but I don't know with what. When someone tries to surf the net and uses a search engine, a window pops up and redirects them to another website. The thing is, we came back from vacation last Wednesday and we had brought the laptop along. I have not used it since we came back, but my little brother has. On Friday morning my mother reports that there is a virus that causes the websites to redirect and the peace in the house hasn't been the same since. My brother can not recall which websites he visited and I couldn't check because a CCleaner scan was preformed and the registry was cleared as well. When I checked the Windows Firewall, it was turned off. I tried to turn it on, but when I click the 'Use recommend settings' button nothing happened. I opened the Window Firewall with Advance Security but got an error that the security snap-in failed to open (error code ox6d9). I will post a screenshot of this below the dds.

I have Mcaffe Version 8.8 installed on the laptop. When I try to open the console, I get an error that the program is not allowed to login because of a remote computer called '.' wont let login. Then after that I get an error that ordinal 1112 cannot be located in the dll WSOCK32.dll. After these errors, the console opens but I can't preform any scans. I will post screen shots of the errors below the dds.

Hi, I originally posted this in the standard 'Windows 7 Help' section and was advised to post it here, so sorry for duplicate topics.
I have previously run virus detection software and it does not appear to have fixed any of these problems, but I will, of course, happily try again if it is deemed the best option with recommended software.

I was advised to include the following information...PC Model: Acer Aspire M3910Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
I have also attached a transcript of the DxDiag Diagnostic readout in the hope that it will help.

Windows 7
Lenovo Y580 2011 model
Recently installed/swapped out for a new SSD and spent the past few days installing windows updates and other programs I needed.

It was only until today did I bother /have a need to access my windows firewall settings. Upon opening Windows firewall with Advanced Security window I am met with a:

There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Adv security snap in  /  the snap in failed to load.

I ran a few quick scans with Malwarebytes Anti malware but those were all PUP files (still had them removed, then restart but same issue)
since I only checked today I can't tell how long this has been an issue.

am I infected? should I restore my computer to a early point before some of the windows security updates?

I'm so surprised.

A:Trouble accessing Windows Firewall Error Code: 0x6D9

Hello, I highly doubt you are infected. Windows Firewall is causing the issue, to solve this problem I recommend downloading Windows Repair and following my steps.

Step 1. Install the program

Step 2. Drain all the power in your computer by unplugging all cords and taking out the battery. After that keep pressing the power button a few times like you are turning it on to drain the power left in your computer.

Step 3. Put the battery back in and the power cord (if you need one) and turn on your computer.

Step 4. Run Windows Repair and select the Step 5 tab (Backup). Next press backup under Registry Backup. You may want to create a restore point too, which is next to it.

Step 5. Go onto the Repair tab and click Open Repairs and make sure you have Registry Permissions, File Permissions, WMI and Windows Firewall checked. When ready click Start Repairs and wait until it has finished.

Step 6. When it has finished copy the log in the Log tab and post it onto this topic.

Step 7. Wait for me to reply

Thanks Aramus

Hi, I have been having issues with windows firewall and have tried quite a few things to attempt to get it working. When I go to windows firewall in control panel, the only option displayed is "update your firewall settings" with a button labeled "use recommended settings." Clicking this button locks up the window for about 15 seconds, once its able to be interacted with again, nothing has changed. Clicking on "advanced settings" on the left takes me to the "windows firewall with advanced security screen," this is where it displays the 0x6D9 error code and it mentions trying to restart the windows firewall service. It is set to automatically start in Services, but never starts and trying to manually start it gives me a message that says windows could not start it.

I have looked at a few other threads on here and have run 3 programs I found recommended in them: AdwCleaner, Junkware Removal Tool, and DDS.

Any help with this would be very appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

My firewall hasn't worked for a long time, and has never been a problem. Now, however, I need to fix it. When I open the window to change settings, I can't because I get an error about 0x6D9.0x6D9
When I went to Microsoft, my PID had expired, and their page said to use a file called MicrosoftFixit.WindowsFirewall.RNP.27303904791259753.5.1.Run
Can't set windows firewall to default because of Norton 360. When I disable Norton firewall, and reboot, it still can't set firewall.
I used command prompt taskkill /IM Norton 360 /T /F to forcefully terminate Norton 360 service that didn't work.
Additional info:
Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64
Norton 360

A:Windows firewall, Norton 360, 0x6D9

First I would uninstall Norton 360. Norton 360 Removal tool

Next, run the Windows Firewall to repair tool. Windows Firewall Repair

Now reinstall Norton 360. If you get Norton free with Comcast subscription?

Here's the link. Norton Comcast Free

Norton should disable Windows Firewall during install.

When prompted, I would not install Constant Guard. It will really slow down your PC.

If you do not have Comcast and purchase Norton 360. Go to the Norton website, find your product and download. You may have to enter your license key to activate.

Hope this helps.

I need to open port 443 but when I try to open advance settings in windows firewall I get error code 0x6D9. If I try to turn on the firewall I get 0x80070424. I tried system file checker tool with no issues, but when trying to reset the firewall settings, the netsh advfirewall reset command came back with an error telling me to make sure the service is running. Please help!

A:0x6D9 error code

The 0x6D9 error indicates you've got some services that the firewall needs to have running that aren't running.
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/unable-to-turn-on-windows-firewall-error-code/03c682a0-1ed1-482b-9324-bfd572fa7036

The 0x8007040424 error may also indicate that certain services that are needed aren't running, but it could also indicate your system is infected.
Try running the fixit tool first: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968002

Wife updated Norton twice and had two Norton Firewalls and Windows Firewalls running together. Paid twice for the 2 updates. Removed Norton Completely and then re-installed Norton 360 Security Version 5, but am still unable to turn off Windows Firewall under Windows XP Pro and also cannot turn on Automatic updates, getting message "we're Sorry, the Security Center could NOT change your Automatic Windows Update setting. To try changing these settings, go to SYSTEM in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates Tab, select AUTOMATIC (recommended) and then click OK. None of this works, then tried using an app to reset Security Settings and that didn't work either. Any suggestions on what I try next. I would like to reinstall Norton 360 Internet Security Version 5, I know there are those out there that hate Norton and the overhead that comes with it, but over the years I've gotten used to it and I like it very much. Greetings....I hope you can help me with my problem. I have had McAfee Security Center installed on my computer since the day I bought it (approx. 2 years), & recently I've been getting alerts telling me that my computer is at risk because the firewall is not turned on, & when I go into settings, & click turn on, it comes on for a brief second, and then turns back off immediately. Got on to McAfee's help center, ran several programs they suggested, i.e. McAfee virtual technician, Stinger, & also programs suggested within their forum, i.e. Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Tuneup Utilities, none of which helped resolve my issue. I even uninstalled/reinstalled McAfee, & the only thing it did was stop giving me the notices, but if I go into settings for the firewall, it still says its off, & when I click turn on, it does for a brief sec, then goes right back off again. And when I checked the Windows firewall, it gives me an error when I try to change the settings (Error code 0x80070424). How to turn windows firewall off? I can't click the Turn Windows Firewall On or Off

A:How to turn windows firewall off? I can't click the Turn Windows Firew

This may have been disabled on your computer, particularly if you are in a Domain (e.g.: at work, in a library, etc).

However assuming that you have Administrator rights to your computer you should be able to turn it on and off by going to Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Turn Windows Firewall on or off.

If you cannot turn the Firewall off through the above approach try the following Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Looks for the 'Windows Firewall' Service, double click it, then click on 'Stop'.

From within the Service properties you can also stop the Firewall from starting with Windows, etc.

I keep getting a message that says Windows cannot start the Internet Connection Sharing service (ICS). I uninstalled Kazaa, too. I have also lost the connection to our other computer and cannot "Set up a Network" under network tasks. I see the LAN connection but that's it. I've also tried setting up the network on the other computer, too. That firewall is working fine...

Ok I am going to try this again. I posted yesterday following instructions given but I did it wrong. I am having a problem getting into my AOL mail. After signing in when I click on mail the page never loads all the way and freezes. After several attempts of going back and forth I can get to my mail. I did a virus scan with Windows Security Essentials and it found the Rogue WIN32/Fake Vimes virus and deleted it, but it did not fix my mail problem. I also can not turn on my firewall. It states that Windows Security Center can't be started. I ran the scans given in the instructions and have attached. The gmer scan took about 2 1/2 hours and when completed said that it hadn't found any system modifications. I hope I am doing this correctly. Will look forward to your reply.

Press the Windows "logo" key and "R" key then copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

%temp%\attach.txt

A text file should open. Save it to your desktop then attach that file to your next reply.

When you run this tool, remember to choose 'Skip' not 'Cure' if it finds something. We just want a scan, not a fix.

Download tdsskiller.exe and Save it to your Desktop.

Double-click tdsskiller.exe and click 'Run'

Click 'Change parameters' then under 'Additional options' tick both boxes > OK.

Click 'Start scan'.

If no infection is found, click 'Close' and let me know.

If an infection is found, select 'Skip' from the dropdown menu under 'Cure' then click 'Continue' > 'Close' > 'Close'.

It will produce a log here > C:\TDSSKiller.2.7.28.0_date_time_log.txt

My wonderful daughter (I'm really geting tired of fixing up the computer after her escapades) installed Kazaa++ and somehow disabled Windows firewall and I can't turn it back on. I keep getting a message that says Windows cannot start the Internet Connection Sharing service (ICS). I uninstalled Kazaa, too. I tried right clicking on MY COMPUTER and went to SERVICES and APPLICATIONS and checked there. Windows Firewall is set to automatic and when I hit the start ICS link, I get "error 10047, an address incompatible with the requested protocol was used"

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I believe I've tried most of the standard Windows options of turning on Firewall. I did a system restore and got it back, but the lost it again after trying to open a port for Kazaa. Now I can't even get back with system restore.

Greetings,

I have a Windows Vista 32bit HP Laptop. Recently, I uninstalled McAfee Anti-virus and other Verizon home security software, because I am no longer a Verizon Customer. I also purchased a new router. During router installation, I turned off the firewall trying to get the router to work. The firewall was turned off and I haven't been able to turn it back on since.

When I click on the Firewall icon with the white "X" in the Taskbar to get to the Security Center and then click on the "Turn on now" button, the following message is displayed:

Security Center can't turn on Windows Firewall.

When I try to turn it on manually and click on the "Turn Windows Firewall on or off", the following message appears:

Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall service?

When I click "Yes", the following message appears:

Windows cannot start the Firewall service.

I have run out of options and am a bit concerned about my computer's security.

Your help is greatly appreciated,

S.

As aforementioned, the firewall will not turn on. When I try to turn it on, I get this message:

Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall service?

When I click yes, it says it's starting the Windows Firewall service, then I get this message:

Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall service.

A:Firewall Won't Turn On

In Start Menu, search box type Services. When it shows highlighted hit Enter. Scroll down to Windows Firewall.

If it says Disabled in the Status column, right click on Windows Firewall. and click Properties. There's a drop-down box in the middle that says Startup Type. Set it to Automatic. Now up in the top left corner there should be a link you can click that says Start. It should let you start it now.

Greetings.

As it stands, I cannot turn on my firewall...whether it is the Windows one or Norton.  Neither will engage.

To go along with this problem, mine is the only computer in our home (newest computer at that) whose speed on the Internet has dropped dramatically.  Whereas my computer and every other device in the house connected to the Internet enjoys upward of 50Mbps downstream and 11Mbps upstream, my computer suddenly slowed to a crawl a few weeks back.

My ISP is Comcast.  I have talked to their tech support and even had a technician out to my home to check our connection and swap out our router, all to no avail.  I have connected both wireless and hard connection, with no appreciable difference.

I can't shake the feeling that my firewall not engaging and my slow Internet speed are somehow the result of an infection on my computer that I have been unable to detect or remove.

I have gone through all of the basics...clearing cache and temporary files, removing any browser add-ons and extensions, running chkdsk, virus scans, Malwarebytes Anti-malware scans, Spybot Search and Destroy...but nothing has worked to allow me to restore the functionality of my Windows firewall, or the Norton firewall.

I am running Windows 7.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Tom

I haven't been able to turn on my firewall in a long time. In Windows, you go to the start icon, system and security, windows firewall. There, you can turn windows firewall on and allow/disallow programs through the firewall.

Hello. First of all I apologize if I put this on the wrong section.

This problem hit my laptop recently, he shows a warning from the Action Center saying "turn on Firewall" but everytime I click the warning an error message pops up saying "Action Center cannot turn on Windows Firewall.". When I try to do it manually no error message appears, it just does nothing.

Tried using Malwarebytes, found 9 threats and deleted them but didn't solve the problem. Tried "sfc /scannow" as administrator, and it found corrupt files but couldn't fix all of them. Then I went to the services, by clicking win + r and typing services.msc, and noticed that the Firewall service wasn't running. Tried starting it, but an error message popped up saying "Windows could not start windows firewall on local computer...specific service error 13". Tried rebooting after all this, but the problem still persists.

I never used any antivirus or malwaye/spyware software, always stuck to Windows Defender which may have been my mistake. Can anyone please help me? I really don't want to reinstall Windows

Thank you for your time.

Hi again, I have another problem or two. I got a limited account and the firewall block every single game I want to play online. Is there any way I could turn it off while I'm playing without administrator privileges?

And, my msn messenger have been virus attacked and changed the nicknames and so on, I have got rid of the virus but my msn is still a bit messed up. Is there a real program that could "fix" it? I don't want to just google a fake program and get hacked again...

Sorry, if this should be posted somewhere else.

64 bit version. I'm trying to work through an iTunes problem - it tells me that the iTunes application could not be opened - and in an effort to diagnose the problem I wanted to turn off the firewall on my antivirus.

I turned off AVG, but when I go to Control Panel and click on Windows Firewall it reads:

Home or work (private) networks Not Connected
Windows Firewall state On

Public networks Connected
Windows Firewall state On

There is an option on the left 'Turn Windows Firewall on or off' that does turn blue and becomes underscored when I hover the mouse over it. But left or right clicking produce no result.

I ran GMER but it didn't produce anything. Also, the only items that were checked were: Services, Registry, Files, and ADS. The rest were greyed out. Maybe because I'm running 64 bit? Not sure. So there was nothing to post from the GMER scan.

I have followed the standard procedure for turning off the windows firewall. But I can not turn off the security wall. I went to control panel-> security center. Then clicked on windows firewall. Chose off option and then OK. But the windows firewall is still on in the security center panel.

I am having problems loading both Internet Explorer and Firefox; the altter one does load after a couple of attempts. IE even when it loads does not work properly. For example, in hotmail, some time I can not open inbox or if I could, could not open a particular mail. I am using Norton firewall/antivirus. I thought Windows firewall may be responsible for my problem.

I would appreciate any help

A:Can not turn off Windows Firewall

I doubt if that's the cause of all your problems, but=
Enable or disable XP Internet Connection Firewall = http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/learnmore/icf.mspx

To turn XP firewall on/off = start/control panel/double-click on network connections/right click on the icon for the connection you are using/properties/advanced/ check or uncheck box next to "internet connection firewall"

After you turn it off, you might want to =

Disable SP2 security alert = start/settings/control panel/security center/in the resources click - "change the way security center alerts me"/uncheck white small boxes and click ok

I installed the beta firmware update for my router & now the firewall is causing some problems.

Is there any problem with turning off the router's firewall? I have comodo firewall v3 installed the 2 pc's so that leaves the wii & ps3 unprotected.

A:Turn off router firewall

Not to sound negative but that is the exact reason why I don't download any beta versions of anything. The company's putting out the beta versions are wanting us the user to do there dirty work for them. So all they have to do is write a patch or rewrite the program. I stay away from all beta versions, no exceptions. As to your problem I would try system restore first to get it back to where it was. If that does not work I would uninstall router software and reinstall again using original software.

Ugh.  Was having some trouble accessing a site I use for work daily (my company and all its employees work virtually).  Kept having trouble but all others did not.  Did a little bit of research and somehow figured out that I might have some type of malware.  I have Microsoft Security Essentials, ran a scan, results....nothing, all is fine.  But was concerned that it had not run a scan in almost a month.  Ended up figuring out that my firewall was not turned on.  Clicked on Update your Firewall Settings, the only option that it gave me was to "Use recommended settings".  When I click on that, it does nothing.  Sometimes it will tell me that it can not do that and ask me to manually do it, sometimes it says nothing and it still says my firewall is not on. Regardless of whether it gives me a message or not, the firewall does not come on.  I've installed Malware Bytes (free) and SuperAntispyware (free), run both, found some issues, got rid of them, shutdown and restarted and still no firewall.  Feeling a little exposed at this point and frustratingly tired....nothing has really worked.  Any suggestions...please....anyone?

A:Can't Turn on Firewall (Window 7)

If Malware has damaged the Windows Firewall service you can use the command "sfc /scannow" to repair it.

I recommend using the boot recovery or safe mode for no interruptions, simply run CMD.exe as Administrator and type in Sfc /scannow
It will take a while so be patient.

Alternatively if you have a restore point you can use that.

I have XP SP2. It comes with Microsoft firewall running. I am using Comodo for the firewall, but I can't turn off the MS firewall. Going to where I would turn it off, it's greyed out so I can't. I've tried running some utilities that supposedly do it, but it comes back with 'your Group Policy won't allow this'. I can't find where to change my group policy, or why it's on in the first place. This is a stand-alone PC. How do I turn off the MS firewall? It is causing me problems accessing the Internet thru my browser.

Hi B-lockdown080,

Your opening post is rather vague.

Could you provide some more information about the error message you are getting when you are trying to re-enable the firewall?
Could you also provide us with which operating system you are using?

I am assuming it is the default Windows Firewall you are trying to re-enable.

The more information you provide, the better.

Thank you

Go to your Control Panel; find "Windows Firewall."
Doubleclick on the icon to get the "General" tab on the dropdown menu that will show.

Please understand that the XP Firewall will only inspect incoming packets; therefore you may wish to use one of the many free firewalls available to assure you have complete protection and computer security.

Hi, I've spent over a week trying to undo the damage caused by a web site. Initially I could not bring up task mgr (ctl-alt-del). Three of my Admin Tool shortcuts were disabled, had to get rid of SpySHeriff, and probably some other things I forget now. All these problems were fixed (I think, but not sure). Now I have one problem I can't seem to fix. The Windows Firewall is disabled and all options on the General Tab are grayed out (can't be used), ON OFF the NO EXCEPTIONS. At the top is an announcement that says "For your security, some settings are controlled by group policy"Maybe I have something left in my computer so thought I'd upload a HJT file. Hi all!
Since last couple of days I am facing trouble in enabling Windows Firewall on my machine which uses Windows 7 Ultimate x64 as the Operating System. It all started with an error that I received while using Internet Download Manager v6.11 regarding Base Filtering Engine. I googled the error and found a fix for the said problem and fixed it in no time. Just out of curiosity I read the post further and found that there could be some other services that might not be working properly, so I checked for the same and was shocked to realize that the windows firewall was not working. Its start up type was ?automatic? however the status showed ?stopped?. When I tried to start the service I got following error:
Windows could not start the Windows Firewall on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service- specific error code 5.
Now I read a couple of posts and they said various things about being attacked by some malware or Trojan etc. I use Microsoft Security Essential as anti-virus and scanned the entire computer. It found more than a dozen of Trojans and some hack related viruses which it very smartly handled. I also used Malwarebyte and found at least 100 of infections. I don?t know if I did good or not, I removed them all. Then gain I tried to start the Windows Firewall service after I restarted my system, yet again it gave me the same error that it could not start. Wh... Read more

Hello Vinny and welcome to Seven Forums.

Couple of things you can try. If you have a restore point that goes back to before the initial problems, try restoring your computer to that date/time.

System Restore

You could also see if your machine has any damaged or corrupt system files by running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

MSE is good, but no anti-malware product is 100% effective 100% of the time. If there was such a product we'd all be using it. Here are a few more free scanning tools recommended on this Forum.

Malwarebytes

Hitman Pro

SuperAntispyware

Comodo Cleaning Essentials

Windows Defender Offline

Hi,

I realised as of now I haven't had a firewall or windows firewall running on my computer for a while. I thought AVG free came with one. So I downloaded Comodo Firewall immediately.

I change my antivirus to avast recently. I use Superantispyware and malwarebytes antimalware.

Many solutions told me to check Base Filtering service and windows firewall were running. They were not. I only got Base Filtering Service to start.

I scanned my computer recently with Avast and found a virus that was on my computer , it was Win64/Sirefef.F , could this be the problem to my firewall not running at all?

1.  Run a virus scan with a good antivirus program.  M$ had admitted that MSE is only a base line program, and a full one like AVAST should be use.
"Holly Stewart, senior program manager of the Microsoft Malware Protection Center, has told Dennis Technology Labs in an interview that Security Essentials is intended to provide "baseline" protection and recommended that users install an anti-virus on top of it for better security from advanced threats".

I recently uninstalled McAfee from my daughters Dell Laptop and replaced it with AvG antivirus. Now the Windows 7 Firewall won't turn on. It doesn't even give you the option in the security settings, the only option is "use recommended settings", which when selected does nothing. The mouse point gives the hourglass for a few seconds but then nothing happens.

I looked at the Windows Firewall service and it was "stopped". It was set to Automatic. I attempted to Start it from there and got an error message stating "Windows Firewall could not be started" or something close to that.

At this point I am at a loss of what to do next aside from reinstalling Windows 7 from scratch or using System restore. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I cannot turn Windows Firewall on. It keeps giving messages about not being able to access 'Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service. Ahhhhhh! I'm guessing; not positive--but can I also assume that something to do with this would make it NOT possible for me to login to some internet sites, since I can do NOTHING to the Firewall settings. It's like it won't let me change anything about it. And , I did already clear cookies. Does any of this make a bit of sense???

Hi Guys,
my current issue is that my Windows Firewall is obviously broken, and cannot be fixed. The thing is that I once got a notification that Firewall was off and I went into Firewall to find the page saying "Update your Firewall Settings", and a button that says "Use Recommended Settings", whenever I click this button, the busy pointer comes up and the page refreshes only to show the same dialogue; in fact all pages in the Firewall section show the same thing.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Save both reports to your desktop.
Include the contents of both logs in your next post.

After having removed the fake Win 7 security program from my daughter's laptop tonly issue I am experiencing is that the McAfee firewall will not turn back on - even the main security center window shows that the firewall is on, but the when I click to review firewall settings, the firewall window shows that the firewall is turned off and when clicking on it to turn it on it just goes right back to the off position. So I don't know if it is actually on or not...your help is appreciated.

Hello,

First we need to pull up your application logs to see if there are any errors there. Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer, or type eventvwr.msc in the start menu search box and hit enter.

Do you see any errors? If so, post the Event ID, Source, and the error message details as well.

Hi,

After finally getting rid of the 'Metropolitan Police virus', and restoring registry files accordingly, my firewall is failing to turn on. It just loads for a minute then times out. The same happens to Windows Defender.
It seems to have corrupted important components on my system.

I have run several scans which claim to have found the troubled files and deleted them, however I am still having problems.
The 'Google misdirect' bug is also lingering too, and my internet speed has become affected.

I've tried nearly every seperate solution aside from getting individual advice based on scan logs. If someone can just advise which scanner to use, I'll then attach the log.

Error code: 0x6D9

Help is much appreciated. This is driving me crazy and hindering my online work.

Thanks in advance!

So I have been having trouble with windows firewall as it doesn't allow any programs access my internet and as a result doesn't allow connections to my TS server I am running among other things.

I have disabled it in the Control Panel as well as disable it in the services.msc and it always turns on when I restart my PC.

If anyone knows how I can permenantly disable windows firewall from turning back on (not just on startup) that would be much appreciated.

I have a HP 2010i running Windows 7. I have been having a problem opening my mail in AOL. After I sign in and click on my mail it brings me to the mail screen but the page never loads all the way and freezes. I can eventually open my mail after going back and forth a few times. I ran a virus scan using Microsoft Security Essentials. It detected the Rogue WIN32/FakeVimes virus and deleted it. However, I still can not open my AOL mail correctly. I do not have the AOL software as a program on my computer, I just go to AOL.com. I can get to my mail correctly on a home laptop and other computers just fine. Also, I can not get my Windows Firewall to turn on. After doing the diagnostic tests provided by Windows, it states "Windows Security Center can't be started". Your help would be greatly appreciated.
