Downloaded from what online link?

The last I heard, 32-bit was the recommended version even for 64-bit systems?

On a fresh install it takes my laptop 12-15 hours (honestly, no kidding) for Microsoft to say hey you got no updates, here is the list what ones do you want to install. Then many hours more to download them and install them.

Is there a way to download all the Windows 7 64bit updates manually (by a program), not one by one searching for them on google and have them all installed automatically by a program?

I have seen some older programs that did this but they don't seem to be current and I still have a about 100 updates after they installed the updates.

I would like to find a way to batch download and install all the updates to a fresh install of Windows 7.

Thanks

I've got a working PC running W7. This OS was installed from a disk.

Now I've put together another PC and I'd like to buy an online copy of Windows and install on this new PC.

It's got no OS at the moment. Can I download the OS with the PC that already has an OS, burn an ISO of the OS to a stick or a disk, and then install this on the new PC?

A:Possible to download W7 online on one PC - install on another?

Of course you can, but does it come with an activation key ?

You can buy windows right from Newegg, or in your case, somewhere near you.

You can always install ubuntu or Linux for free.

Hi guys, I have just recently upgrade my computer from Windows XP to Windows 7, but since then I haven't been able to install most games.

During installation, each game has a different error message but generally, the problem seems to lie in games that require unpacking large files, such as *.bin. For example, while trying to install Assassin's Creed 3, this message appeared:

An error occurred while unpacking: archive corrupted! Unarc.dll returned an error code: -7. ERROR: archive data corrupted(decompression failed)Click to expand...

or

Decompression failed with error code: -12. Bad CRC in the archive data0.binClick to expand...

Please help me, I'm going mad.

Computer's spec:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600)
Processor: Intel Core i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz (4CPUs)
RAM: Elixir DDRam 3 2GB x2
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
DirectX 11
Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D
BIOS: 9/24/9 Ver: 08.00.15

What I've tried so far:

Updated drivers of graphic card, mainboard, etc.
Ran as Administrator.
Installed in safe mode.
Tried installing these games in another computer (everything's fine)
Reinstalled Windows 7.
Formatted entire HDD, reinstalled Windows XP (now even Windows XP has this problem)
Bought a new HDD

Hello, I plan to buy a used genuine copy of Windows 7 with the product key.

I thing is, I read this article about how I won't be able to go online with my modem after a new install:

The myth of driver backups | PCWorld
Basically when I do a fresh install of Windows 7, I will not be able to connect online to update my drivers for my ethernet & display & Windows will not recognize the drivers from a USB stick without an installer either!?

I will have to manually download them from the manufacturers site, but my PC is used & had a lot of off shelf upgrades, it isn't a HP/Dell/Acer PC to just get the driver installer from their website.

How would I know what to download & where?

A:Windows 7 won't go online & won't download drivers after clean install

Yes, just download the drivers installer before reformatting and you'll be able to install those.

This tutorial helps in determining your exact hardware: Speccy - Advanced System Information Tool

Look at the model of the network card, motherboard, chipset, video card, wifi adapter, or any other thing you might have. Then with the manufacturers/models, just google those and download them from each individual website.

The HP/Dell/Ace/whatever brand is just a commercial name. They only take ready parts from the hardware manufacturers, assemble it, infect with crapware and relabel it before selling, but that's all. The drivers themselves will never come from them, directly.

You may have other Spyware issues. First you can disable the Firewall. If the Spyware program opens then it has it's own Firewall that conflicts with Windows. You should also download CCleaner delete temp files, run Registry Cleaner too. Then download malwarebytes run full scan delete nasties.

This is a multi-layered question...

First thing that has been happening for over a week is...
I get the blue screen with it saying "checking file system on c:" "type of the file system is NTFS"

As of two days ago, I am unable to connect to the internet. I checked with ISP and performed tests and they said there is nothing wrong with my connection, which is proven since I can connect with my other computer.

I have read that this could be a harddrive crashing problem or that I need a new NIC card?

Next question: if it is my hard drive crashing...how do i back up my files, also how do i back up my itunes (I have over 1000 songs on there)?
If it is in fact this NIC card thing, what is it and how do i do it?

Obviously, I'm not very computer adept.

Please help ASAP! Thank you!

Welcome to TSF....

Let's see if fixing the chkdsk part is going to help? Try this:

Click on the Start menu and open the run dialog.
2. Type "cmd" and return (without quotes)
3. Next type "fsutil dirty query <letter of drive that chkdsk keeps checking>" (for example, C:
4. If the returned message indicates that the volume is dirty, go to step 5
5. Next type "chkdsk <drive letter> /f /x"
If you get this below answer YES.
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? <Y/N>
6. After that finishes, repeat step 3.
7. If the volume is no longer dirty, reboot and chkdsk should not reappear.

The "fsutil dirty query" reports the current state of the flag.
"Chkdsk /f" forces Chkdsk to run whether or not the flag is dirty--- it's a way to ensure that errors are fixed, regardless of what the flag says.
"Chkdsk /x" goes a little further and helps ensure that any files that were left open get closed; it actually implies "/f" so you don't need the /f if you're using /x .
With either /f or /x, at the end of the run, Chkdsk should set the flag to clean

I'm trying to write a program that detects file sizes of online images..

So far I've tried to use FileLen to achive this and found out:
1.) It doesn't seem to be possible to get it to work with online files

2.) It doesn't seem to work if you set it to look at an imported image
(eg: Image1.Picture = LoadPicture("C:\Test.jpg")
Text1.Text = FileLen.Image1)

And i'd rather not download the files or use Winsocks unless i REALLY have to,
I am trying to run it to check over 10,000 images so downloading is not really a great option for me

Any help?

Also I tried in frustration purchasing the SP2 installation CD, but had problems sending in my order!

I have also gone to the link provided by Ried (http://www.updatexp.com/0x8007007E.html) and gone through each step provided on that site, but none of it has worked (no matter if I choose Express or Custom in the Windows Updates page.)

I have spent a long time diagnosing and trying to fix this and have run the two windows diagnostics programs, but no luck so far. I have also tried sfc /scannow and it didn't find any errors. I don't think my anti virus is interfering with getting any updates and am loath to switch it off and leave my pc vulnerable for hours while it says its looking for updates. I deleted the updates list and stopped and restarted the wuauserv service. Before I did this I noticed there were a number of failed updates in the list.
I also typed msconfig into the command window and stoped all non Windows services and rebooted, and left this running for a few hours.
I think the dism/online/cleanup-image/restorehealth command would probably have fixed this issue but it wont run in my version of Windows 7. I get error 87, option unknown.
I can't think if any thing else to do but a clean installation in windows 7.

All of them worked except the ATI Mobility Radeon x1300, and when i try to download/install it, it just comes up with unknown error code 80200053. Now my computer is stuck with low resolution and using a generic PnP standard VGA Graphics Adapter driver and I can't find a way to get my video card to work :/

Can anyone suggest a way to install the driver?
I tried downloading the driver online, but those versions are not compatible with Windows 7?

Welcome to the Se7enforums! kev

Your main problem will be trying to find 7 drivers for the X1xxx series anything since that series is no longer supported for 7. You will need the Vista equivalent however that should go right on and work without problems since that will support vpu chips prior to the 2xxx, 3xxx, and 4xxx still seeing active support. Hey, about 3 weeks ago I was getting a constant rundll93.exe error. I ran several anti-spyware and bitdeffender and none still detected it. So I had lost internet connection and soon enough the PC would freeze upon boot. So, I repaired my XP with the installation disc. Everything has been fine except I can't delete one folder in my "mybackup" folder and have started getting redirects while browsing, I can't install any antispyware/ antivirus software. I get page not displayed or he likes. Rundll93 has started showing up again and several sites have been getting blocked. I have only been able to download malwarebytes antispyware, but it won't allow me to run it. The free online Panda scan detected W32/P2PShared.AN.worm and BCK/TDSS.AU but can't disinfect it. Hello everyone
It's a long time since I don't write an article in MA but I decided to explore some important concepts to analyze malware.

"Understanding packers and detecting a packed file" is a topic treated by @kram7750 in this thread :http://malwaretips.com/threads/malw...ng-packers-and-detecting-a-packed-file.42356/

I will talk to unpacking
The manual unpacking is definitely the most complex to learn. Although a malware can be sometimes much more difficult by a packer, it is much easier to explain the theory behind a malware, rather than explain the operation of a packer. This is primarily due to two reasons. First, you need to have a unpacking knowledge of a wider number of arguments: it is not enough to understand the machine code and know that debugging. In addition, the term "packer" is very generic. The packer implement all sorts of anti-reversing techniques and even an entire book would suffice to explain them all in detail.

I will try to make myself understood even by those who don't have a clue what a packer. However, it is useless to deny that you have to engage, and not just to see this introduction. Do not confuse, even if there are other threads, this article represents the real end of our route. If you include the following, all the rest you'll learn without difficulty and it will update your knowledge base package. Here, we define the article on manual unpacking the culmination of knowledge. To write this introd... Read more

I have just replaced my old desktop for a new one that comes with windows 7 64 bit. But not sure why ever since I started using the new desktop to unpack rars and especially rars with parts, both winrar and 7zip often have error messages like:

"Packed data CRC failed"
"The volume is corrupted"
"The file is corrupted"
etc.

For example, one of my family member who lives in Ireland wants to send me a bunch of videos and photos taken from a trip they went. He packed these bunch of files into three part rars and uploaded onto a file hosting website and so I have to download each one of them. I first tried jdownloader and downloaded them but couldn't unzip it. Then I tried to download in the normal way using firefox but still couldn't unpack. And I started to think is the pack corrupted?

But then I tried to use my netbook (with win7 32 bit starter os) and downloaded the files through this computer, it unpacked smoothly without a hassle. I then tried to copy the files I have downloaded using my new desktop to my netbook and try to unpack them there but again it saids the file is corrupted. That means somehow it's not winrar or 7zip's problem but the way my new computer writes the files into the hard disk creates corrupted files?

So what's wrong with my new computer? Even my old desktop won't have these problems. Is it because of the 32 64 bit difference? Perhaps my Ireland cousin packed the files with winrar 32 bit and i used 64 bit didn't work? Or ... Read more

Whenever I download a large archive, whether it's 7z, RAR format or some bin format (that's unpacked via provided installer), I always have problems unpacking.

What happens is that, while extracting, I receive errors about some files that are corrupted and cannot be extracted. The FUNNY thing is, if I try to extract the same archive again it says some other file is corrupted while the one that was "corrupted on my first try now extracts properly. I don't know how is that even possible.

1) I know that the archives I download/get from friends are not corrupted, and I can trust those sources.
2) I've tried basically everything, like re-downloading, trying with numerous attempts, and updating the software I use (7z, Win RAR, or Daemon tools for those bin archives I mentioned).

Any help? Thanks,
VAO

I'm wondering if your hard drive has some bad sectors. You might run a disk check program to see. Your drive manufacturer will probably have one.

Hi, RedClank, and welcome to the forums.

Are you experiencing this problem with *any* downloads, or just in these games?
Are the game downloads being performed *in-game* - as in you connect to a multiplayer server and it is downloading mod files / maps / etc?
Are these Steam games or independent?

I'm having problems downloading programs from internet explorer onto my computer. (windows xp)
I am currently trying to download the new program on ABC.go.com to watch videos online, but I have tried to download from other sites with the same results, so it's not the program that I'm trying to download, it has to be some setting on my computer preventing it from loading. Here is what happens:
I click on the button to download the program
A screen pops up to give me the option to run/save/cancel.
I click on run and it verifies the information, then pops up with another box with the name/publisher information and the choice to run/don't run.
I select run. A box will pop up saying it's installing. About 10 seconds later that box disappears and nothing else happens. No error messages, the program isn't downloaded, and my system slows down.
How do I fix this problem?

We have 2 computers which have both recently been formatted and Win XP SP2 re-installed. They were both running fine until yesterday, we could download whatever we wanted. Both have been running a registry cleaner and wondering if this is the cause of the problem. Whenever I click on a link to download the usual message I get is "the website requires you to be logged in" (This is the same case on all sites) Been through all the router settings and even disconnected from that and gone striaght from the modem. Have ran a "sfc/ scannow" in the cmd with the windows disk to see if all the files are intact and doesn't seem to be a problem there. Also tried the basics of running through the internet options but everything is set correct, nothing has been changed in there anyway. Getting close to just doing a system restore but really don't want to, please help someone, thanks.

To whomever can help:

I was given a computer for my daughter. It was JUST installed with Windows 7 home Premium sp1 when we got it. When I have tried to check for updates, it gets stuck- even if I leave it for hours & hours, it still continues to "check for updates" (& I have very fast internet). I have ran microsofts windows update troubleshooter, but it still does the same thing. I have ran the things listed in the sticky needed to be done for problems with windows update, with no issues. Please help.

I have a new install of win 7 32bit SP1 and installed the system drivers and when I update it installed the latest version of Windows Update Agent, I set updates (before checking) to NOTIFY ME BEFORE DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL - so I know from my experience of hundreds of installs that it should take minutes to tell me whats available THEN i can download them....THEN i can install them... but it goes into a loop,,,constantly saying its checking for updates, this soaks up my 2Gb RAM and 50% CPU constantly

so i hve tried the microsoft troubleshooter fixit here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/971058

it says its fixed something but cuold not fix issues with installing updates?

My problem is that if u wanna unpack an exe file, could be a setup exe., then it will save the data in the temp folder (Windows drive), and my problem is that i made a patision (or however to spell that in english.. ) so i got 10 gb for windows, so if my windows ****s up i will be able to just reinstall without worrying too much for my files. (Programs like registery mechanic will often solve the registery prob.) Anyways, this means i don't have enough space on my c-drive, as i should have given it more ofc.. Should have given it 15 instead, as my programs are on that drive aswel... anyways! thats not the matter.. the matter is that when some exe. files wants to extract they want to extract huge amounts of software before installing, im talking about 1,3 gb + here, and i cant get that much space without deleting half of my programs or so.. SO what i want to know, is there a way to manualy unpack an exe. file ? Or is there a way to change its unpacking destination, so it won't save in temp.. thanks for all upcomming answer.

- Hans, Denmark.

A:Hard times unpacking exe files.

Change the place where it unpacks to the other partition you have for files, programs etc. This should be on the extraction wizard.

Hello,

I have a Toshiba laptop that will not do Windows updates. It just hangs on checking for updates. Here's what I have done.

completely wiped and reformatted hard drive
fresh install of of 2 different versions of windows 7 - Home premium - what the laptop came with, and Win 7 starter (mine), and I have the same problem with both

changed update options to check, but let me install
I've done MS fixit 50202 in aggressive mode
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821)
I've done the stop wuauserv and bits services, deleted the SoftwareDistribution folder and restarted services.

It just hangs on checking for updates - eventually all network activity stops, cpu hangs around 50% and memory at about 60%, with all that being taken up by svhost

I even checked to see if the network adapter needed newer drivers...
the machine seems to be running fine - I can get online, and can install other programs..

CBS log attached,

Thanks for your help

Hi,

After installing the win8 consumer preview win8 has detected my DATA partition and said it needs to be scanned which it did. No errors, win8 working great!

Since then each time I start either xp or 8 each one wants to scan the partitions of this drive. Luckily I disconnected my PATA drive (with XP) so I can boot depending on what cable is connected.

However I am a bit worried about what 8 did, this now trigers these checks on each system loader..

The only disk 8 sees is the sata 1tb divided into
h: (from xp point of view) - here is the win8 system - NTFS
Y: (from xp point of view) - here I keep data, photos, etc..

when using xp i plug the PATA (PM) and boot from this (c:)

Can you advise, I have restarted XP three times to check whether it will resolve itself:

1st boot:
scanning y: (data) -> ok, but "correcting errors in the uppercase file" at end

2nd boot
scanning h: (win8) -> ok
scanning y: (data) -> ok
scanning i: (what the hell is this?) -> ok, but slows down on step 1/3 (verifying files, sounds like its reading something slowly - tara tara tara), after 30 secs proceeds and OK

3rd boot = same as 2nd

shall I try running some commands (eg chdsk /R) and get rid of 8 for my sata drives files safety? Please advise, my config is on the left.

A:[SOLVED] chkdsk checking on boot after win8 install

Command then chkntfs /x c: (assuming that's your drive format). If necessary run the command for the other drives also, or you could run the command for all the drives at once.

After days of research I'm going to be switching to Wildblue Satellite from dial-up. My only concern is the FAP.

I plan to get the Pro package so I have higher limits. I sell on eBay 6 days a week, 8 hours a day. I must upload photos with my auctions. The only downloading is updates to my program.

Before I commit I need to find out how much I actually upload and download on an average day. I may not need the bigger package or I may need to wait until I can afford Hughesnet instead.

Are there any free programs online I can get to keep track of this for the next few days or is there a way I can figure this out on my computer itself?

Thanks,

You appear to have a 6-year old Dell Latitude E6400 laptop.

What's the "service tag" number and/or "express service code" number on it?

---------------------------------------------------------

That model laptop supports up to 8 GB of RAM, but it appears to have only 2 GB of RAM in it.

You should take advantage of its 64-bit operating system by installing 4 GB or more of RAM in it.

Adding more RAM will also improve speed and "snappiness" in it.

while the download/install worked fine on a 7 laptop, I'm caught in a viscious circle with a 7 desktop where it refuses to install the program stating that a newer version of the program is already installed; and must be un-installed, before the online ID assistant 7 can be installed.
I also get warning boxes stating "another installation must complete before this installation can start",; but nothing else is being installed at that time.
I have tried to uninstall all microsoft live essentials programs; used Revo, used Iobit, started only essential diagnostic programs, used windows installer cleaner, then tried to install; shut off the Norton 360 antivirus while trying to install; all to no avail.
I'm only doing this to allow internet access to the windows 7 devices media player.
it bugs me that the installation worked on the laptop; but not on the desktop. What am I missing? Both are 64 bit; but the laptop is 7 Home Premium, whereas the desktop has 7 Home Professional.

I was looking to buy microsoft office either version 2002 or 2003. I came across this site. www.brandoem.com. They offer software for sale and distribute it by download only for very(what seems to me!) reasonable prices.
I have three questions.
1. Is this site genuine? Maybe someone has bought from them before. I am in Ireland where to buy this software would cost at least $400.(i think!)
2. What approximate size would this download be?
3. Will microsoft office that I buy in the USA going to work here in Ireland. i.e. its not region specific is it?

Any help with any of my questions would be really appreciated.

For about 3 to 4 weeks now, nearly everytime I get online (using Juno speedband) my service starts to get really slow, so I logoff only to find that an unidentified update is downloading while I surf. I can't see if the download is happening untill I click log-off. Once I click log-off I get this message:

We are downloading additional features of our software that will enhance your user experience. You will be automatically logged off after the download is complete.

Beneath that is a progress bar, that shows it is downloading part I of II.

I thought this might be connected to windows, so I set windows XP to notify only but not automatically download AND then downloaded every windows update I require including SP2. No change though, I'm still getting the phantom download.

I have a 2-month-old Compaq Presario with Office professional. Only other software I've added was Norton Internet Security (which I've set to update automatically, but they always identify their updates), Spybot, Ad-Aware, and Spyblaster. All are up to date yet the phantom returns.

Any thoughts? How can I stop this? I got so frustrated one day, I decided to let the damn thing completely download, but once it did there was no install program, and the next time online it all started all over again.

A:phantom download starts automatically when I get online

You might want to consider running HiJackThis and posting the log for someone to review.

I just performed a clean install of Windows 7 from a DVD I had purchased. Then I proceeded to install updates, more than 200 of them, that took an entire day.

Not too long after I had purchased the DVD copy I had downloaded a backup copy from either the Microsoft site or a sister site hosting the file. This was a few years back though.

My question is this: Would the Windows 7 (in this case 7 Home Premium) online download include service packs and critical updates to a more current point in time, or is it the same as what's on my DVD?

And regardless, does any one have a valid link to the download site at present?

Thanks all

A:Windows 7 online download - original or Updated

https://heidoc.net/joomla/technology...-download-tool

The above link may work.

No one can tell about what you previously downloaded. Maybe 7 HP, maybe 7 HP with SP 1 included. At one time, either was available.

As far as I know there's no way to get 7 HP SP1 and all critical updates in a single download.

I can tell you that an official ISO of Win 7 HP with SP 1 integrated is 3.09 GB.

This help request might fit in alternate discussion threads, but this seems like the most logical place to post... these could be 2 separate issues, but it feels like they are connected to me.

Problem:
A - Unpacking any RAR, Zip, 7z, etc file - particularly large ones results in CRC or other unpacking errors 90% of the time. Sometimes a simple retry works, sometimes re-downloading the compressed file works.. sometimes nothing works. Anything over 1GB is almost sure to fail miserably every time (often fails on different files within the package.
(this occurs using winzip, winrar, 7zip)

B - Multiple game client crashes - Oblivion, Various MMORPG (WoW, LOTRO, many others) crash constantly.. if the computer doesn't freeze or blue screen, the error is 100% the client .exe file .. it doesn't happen just on strenuous load sequences or 'laggy' areas.. it can just happen sitting in the middle of an unpopulated area.. varies once per 1-5 hrs.. rarely goes 3 gameplay attempts without at least 1 crash.

Both errors have occured pretty consistently over the last 3 years.. i give up on some games that have more crashes than others.. and give up on some because i can never even unpack the game to play it.

Original System: Dell XPS 600 Purchased October 2005 .. problems started right away - but I just ignored most of them until after warranty

Hardware Replaced:
Video Card (6 mos ago).. was nvidia 7800 gtx, now nvidia 8600 i believe..

When I try to complete updates from windows updates, I keep on trying to install/download Windows Vista SP 2 and I get an error -8007045D. I have been trying to troubleshoot this for too many hours and I have learned that there are different issues that could be causing the problem.
I have tried all of them, and not one works for me.
I did receive a piece of advice from the forum here which I am now trying. Inst/download from Windows online, manually for my Vista 64 bit system. I am hoping it works and in addition, I am hoing that the windows issue was the reason that my windows in general were sluggish and freezing often.
Does anyone have any other ideas of what could be going on with my system?
Thanks

Basically my old HDD died from bad sectors and I had to format and install Windows 7 Enterprise on a back up hdd that was flooded with useless documents from the past.

Went ahead done what I had to do and left Windows to check for updates, Steam install some games and League of Legends update.

However everything finished but Windows was still checking for updates and I noticed the svchost.exe (netsvcs one) uses about 1.5 GB out of 4 RAM. Immediately knew that this was caused by the Windows Update service that's under it.

However turning Windows Update off is never a smart thing to do and I don't have the kind of time to manually download updates.

I know that it will probably blast me with 200+ updates (has happened in the past but never used up so much RAM and finished way faster than 6 hours with all my usual post installation stuff.

Anyways some info you should probably know:
-I'm using a Wireless adapter (TP-LINK TL-WN722N) and I have read threads here that Windows Update would sometimes fail to do what it should with Wireless adapters, unfortunatelly that isn't an option at the moment.
-Resetting Windows Update manually and through Fix It doesn't work.

So first thing I'm looking at is updating the Windows Update client, please do tell if you think otherwise, or if not link me to the newest Windows update client or probbably any hotfixes that could fix the problem (never done this before and wouldn't want to mess up, so I decided to ask you guys )

might be due to fact that Enterprise and Ultimate, are different versions.
If you using the Ultimate key on an Enterprise install, or visa versa, then it will hang as its failing validation.

Ok im sure this will be an easy one for you smart people out there. My son went into my comp/ local disk properties /tools then clicked on error checking.

How do we stop this? Its taking forever. He has turned the comp off and left it but when he turns it back on it starts again. Please help he is driving me crazy.

Comp is running xp home.

thanks for help in advance

A:error checking

Hiya

If some of the files on your son's pc are being used, Windows may need to run the disk checking tool on startup of Windows. This may be what's happening. If you leave it running when it boots up, the error's should be found and repaired.

Did he select the options to 'automatically fix file system errors' and 'scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors'?

Hi,

When I discovered that a number of images and files are being corrupted (I can't open them anymore but it worked fine a few months ago), I became worried and wanted to run a scan for bad sectors, however, I cannot do so.

When I try to run the disk check from the properties in "My Computer", an error pops up saying that windows is unable to complete the disk check. When I tried to run it in the command prompt (ie typing chkdsk) It says: The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). click on OK to terminate the application.

How do I, if possble, solve the problem of corrupted files and the disk checker?

Thanks.

A:Error checking

Go to the support site for the manufacturer of your hard drive. In their download and drivers section they will have a disk utility to scan the hard drive. Give that one a try

A:Error Checking

Hi,

If you want the drive(s) checked at the next startup, simply put a checkmark into one of the two boxes at the error check tool screen...
When you restart the PC, the check will automatically start up.

Depending on the individual circumstances it might be wise to do a check about once a month...

Hi I'm new I have a desperate problem that is surely solvable, but beyond me.

this is what happened..

I put in my SD memory card and tried to open a folder on it that has family photos of precious memories and it wouldn't open, saying there was an I/O device error i think. so next I right click on the SD drive > properties > error checking. I ticked the box for recovery of bad sectors and let it do its thing. When finished it tells me it HAS recovered files and has put them in a folder called 'found' on the drive. When I look at the drive it has a completely new structure of hidden folders starting with 'private' and .dat files in the many subfolders amongst others. the whole lot is 38mb which is likely to be about right. no sign of a 'found' folder, and there is no sign of a 'found' folder anywhere on the computer hard drive hidden or otherwise.

I downloaded a trial of 'file recover' but it could only find deleted files, none of which are relavant. I've also tried other 'recovery' programs but all they do is recover very old deleted files. the files I need back have been transformed into this mysterious structure of folders and weird files.

please can anyone help me as I would be so sad to loose these photos.

When i check for errors on my computer i get a message saying it can't check when it's in use. Why?

Here's a screen shot:

A:Error Checking...

Hi Kray Z.
As the operating system is in use, there are Windows files loaded, as well as third party, which by itself prevents such files to be checked during the checking for errors. The check is done at boot before such files are loaded, so the question in the message. I hope I was clear.

Hi. Over the last week or so suddenly my download speed seems to have slowed dramatically. Most noticeably, while attempting to watch videos such as youtube, USA Today, and other news sources. The videos show for 5 to 15 seconds and then keep buffering. On speedtest.net, download speeds are anywhere from .19Mbps to .65 and upload speeds are fairly consistent at .68.

I reported this to my DLS provider, Verizon, and they line tested (ok) and sent a new modem to replace a 5 year old one. Speeds are still the same with the new modem. I run a weekly AVG sweep and periodically do Microtrends Housecall and Malwarbytes Antimalware checks (from past experience here @ BC  ). Nothing comes up on all three.

I'm not timing out on sites it's just noticeably slower with little to no video capability. I have 30 GBs of free space of approximately 290 capacity. It is a Windows Operating system and I'm running XP.

Is there anything to be done?  I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks very much,
Don

Windows Defender has been recommended by tech. Following on-line directions, it would not download. Is there a live link for download simplicity & success? Would there be a conflict with Defender & anti-virus Vipre?

A:Download Windows Defender - Online Directions Not Valid

Hello Authorship, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Windows Defender is included by default in Windows 8 and 8.1, so there's nothing to download or install for it.

When you install a 3rd party antivirus program, Windows Defender gets disabled by default.

You'll need to uninstall Vipre if you would like to use Windows Defender instead.

I am trying to clean my laptop of malaware etc. as per instructions on "Do you have popups or other malware infecting your computer" here. Everytime I click on the download url for AdAware internet explorer shuts down. So I went on and downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy...no problems downloading and running that. So, I tried to do an online scan of my computer using House Call but IE shut down when I tried to start that also. I have AVG virus protection running. Could this be the problem? Should I disable it while trying to download AdAware and trying to run HouseCall? Thanks for any help you can offer!

OK, I was finally able to download AdAware and ran it...had a bunch of tracking cookies but that is all. Downloaded Spybot and ran it...no problems there. Used the spybot startup tool to stop some startup processes that weren't needed and did a full virus scan which found no problems. So, I guess I am good to go. The link posted in the "Do you have popups....etc." pinned thread did not work for me...I finally looked around on BC and found another url for it and was able to download it from 3Geeks or something like that. Whew. I am tired...

Hello everyone, and thank you for taking the time to look at my topic!  I'm sure a lot of you might have better stuff to do than help some stranger on the internet with their computer problems, so thank you so much for your aid.

My laptop has been acitng up a lot recently, moreso in the past 2 days.  When I download a file, it automatically comes up as 'failed' in the download menu.  Retrying the download usually doesn't do much, so I've been trying to download things(antiviruses) from another computer.  The thing is, when I try to move them from the USB/External harddrive onto my laptop, it won't let me, sometimes coming up with a message that tells me to skip or ignore, and sometimes just not doing anything at all.

Also, I'm not 100% sure how to convey this problem in the best way, but my temp folder is messed up too.  Playing games, things like 'temp error etc etc etc' shows up, and other information about it.  That's really all I can say about my problem.  If there's anything anybody can help me with, that would be REALLY amazing!  Thank you again!

EDIT:  I'm also on windows 8.1

edit #2:  Not able to download mbar, it tells me (and tells me something along the lines of this for other things I've tried to download too), 'Could not create file "C:\Users\Cameron\Desktop\mbars\mbar\Data\swissarmy.ref'.  The fiel or directory is corrupted or unreadable."

A:Can't download files online, TEMP folder not exactly working, etc

While I can't help you remove whatever caused it, this might help with your download problem:

Start -> Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections tab

If you see anything inside the white box, select it and click "remove".

Then, click on the "LAN settings" button. If the checkbox labelled "proxy server" is checked, uncheck it unless you or someone you know, such as your ISP, set that up.
