Problem transferring MS Works Calendar

Q: Problem transferring MS Works Calendar

Hello,
I am helping a friend migrate from Windows XP with old applications to a new computer Windows 7 Pro 32 bit. I am trying to make the transition simple for him, so transferring as much of the old applications as possible. The one that is kicking my behind right now is the Calendar in Microsoft Works v9. Installation of MS Works v9 on the new computer did not present any problems, so both computers have the same version.

What should have worked is to simply copy the mswkscal.wcd file from old computer to new computer. It partially worked, but not well enough to be useable. The old computer has calendar event items that go back to 2001, so there is a lot of sentimental and historical information to be preserved. There were 3 significant things that I observed.
1. The name on the calendar tab started out as "My Calendar" on both computers, but changing it did not solve any problems.
2. There are no events displayed in the calendar view screen, none at all. When I opened the "Reminders" view then there were several items listed for the current date, just like they should be shown. So the events are there somewhere, but cannot be seen. When I opened one of those items on the Reminder list, it did have the proper Recurrence information.
3. I tried an export on the old computer (both as .vcs and .ics) to import on the new computer and again ran into problems. The import on the new computer gave an error that the file was not formatted correctly (I later decided maybe the file is too big). When I opened the exported files (using Notepad) I noticed that there was not any information about Recurrence (such as a birthday happening every year), so if I can get the import to work it would still be only part of the needed Event Detail information. For an interesting twist I tried the export to html (limited to 24 months, also created a matching .vcs file) and the import accepted it, but again there was no Recurrence information.

So the first of my questions is, is there a special trick to getting the mswkscal.wcd file to be properly accepted on the new computer, as this seems to be the only way to get the Recurrence information transferred?

My second question is, if my friend decides to switch from the Works Calendar to the Outlook 2013 Calendar, how do I get the Recurrence information to transfer?

It really shouldn't be this hard.

A: Problem transferring MS Works Calendar

I do not know Ms Works too well but I believe it can export to an ICS file (*.ics). The Outlook.com calendar (former Windows Live Calendar) at https://calendar.live.com supports importing ICS files, so I would at least try that first and then see and decide if it would be the right time to let Works retire. To use Outlook.com calendar you need a Microsoft Account (Hotmail, Live, MSN or Outlook.com email).
Step 1: Export Works calendar as *.ics file
Step 2: Go to https://calendar.live.com, click Import:
Step 3: Select Import into a new calendar, browse to your *.ics file, click Import

Hi Friends,
I'm using Windows XP Home sp3, fully updated, and Works 2002 version 6. (I know it's an old version, but it's all I've got for now.) The Works Calendar doesn't display holidays, none at all. I can't imagine why anything called a "calendar" would be made without holidays by default, but I'm guessing this allows holidays of different countries and cultures to be set up.

Anyway, I found in the Edit menu > Add Holidays. I choose the holidays I want displayed, and click OK. But none are displayed.

I found in the Windows Works Discussion Group a recent message about adding holidays, where it was suggested that an internet search for for iCal holidays would turn up a file that could be downloaded, and imported into the calendar, that would add the holidays. But after searching and trying to download, that file turns out to be an ICS filetype which is incompatible with Windows .

So I'm hoping someone here will be able to advise me about adding Holidays to the Works Calendar? However at this point, I would even appreciate knowing about any free calendar programs which don't rely on advertising in order to be offered for free. For example, I'm hoping there's an Open Source solution.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it

I've got a client who is using microsoft works 8.0 calendar and recently had to replace his hard drive and reinstall his operating system. The problem we're having is that all of his calendar data is stored as a .wcd file and the calendar will only import icalendar files and vcalendar files .ics and .vcs. Is there anyway to convert the data file from .wcd to .ics or is there a way to get the calendar to read a .wcd file? He is using Windows XP, service pack 2. All of my searching on Google lead me nowhere. Microsoft's website was no help either. If a .wcd file is from an older version of Works calendar, where can you get that version of works? Any help on the matter will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

It has been decided that my computer is free from malware, so I've been referred to this forum.

I recently downloaded malwarebytes anti-malware program. The instructions were good and it worked fine. But, now I can't access my calendar for reminders. I get a generic error message saying "Microsoft Works 8 has encountered a problem and must close."
It does not say what problem.

I have a Works 8 installation disk, but I think if I just reinstall Works, I'll lose all the notes on my calendar.

The only other thing I use from Works is a simple database which is working fine. Only the calendar reminder feature won't run. If I reinstall Works I could lose all the info on my database and I don't feel like re-entering over 1000 files.

I have the database backed up and it looks like I 'should' be able to run the backup file if the original gets wiped.
However, although I have backed up all the files in Works calendar folder, I don't know which one(s) hold the reminder info. I've tried replacing existing files with the backups, but they don't run so it looks like the problem is not with the calendar data files themselves, but something more basic to Works 8.

I recently found that if I right click on WksCal.exe and choose "Run as..." and use "administrator ", I get a different error message. This one simply says that Works could not find some needed files and suggests that they may have been moved or eras... Read more

I use Windows XP Home Edition.
I installed PalmOne Desktop software on my Dell computer to be able to type addresses, appointments, etc. on the computer and have it appear on my Palm Zire m150 and vice versa. Everything always worked fine.

Then I decided to synchronize data between the Works Calendar and the Address book of my device, so I set up synchronization by following the directions in Works Task Launcher.

Now the sychronization between my Palm program and my Palm hand-held no longer works. It freezes up in the HotSync process when it is trying to synchronize the date book. I suspect the problem is with the Works Calendar addition to the mix.

Works gives no instructions on how to disable what I enabled, i.e. the Works calendar-Palm pilot connection.
I don't need or want the Works calendar and would not mind getting rid of it and all the data on it altogether, however, I can't afford to lose the Palm data.

Can you help?

Thank you,
Madelyn

I downloaded some Microsoft updates, rebooted, and now my Microsoft Works Calendar won't come up. I've been to MS website and tried their fix - it didn't work. Next option is to delete Works and reload. My question is - will this deletion get rid of all of my data files along with the program? Also, is Outlook Express part of Works? I've had a persistent problem for several months since I migrated to a new hard drive. Outlook 2010 calendar is working, but only in Active List view. Any attempt to change to Preview or Calendar view produces the error message, "Could not read the calendar." Changing from Active List to List works some of the time, but inconsistently and sometimes it will hunt for the list and offer the same "Could not read the calendar." error message. This is very frustrating as I find it difficult to manage the list view and am accustomed to seeing the calendar week view.

I use an Android phone and use gmail and Google calendar to see mail and appointments on my phone. So, I've got Google Calendar Sync 0.9.4.1 running. Google Calendar Sync appears to be operating normally. I have a nice calendar view on my phone or web-based from my computer. I have tried adding the Google calendar to Outlook but it is a duplicate of the default calendar and I can't set it as the default. Also, MS Office does not permit me to delete the default calendar.

I don't like any of the work arounds. I just want the calendar to work like it should. Research discloses no real hint of anything that works including running scanpst. Scanpst does a great job at fixing the problem by wiping the whole calendar thanks very much MS.

What is the difference between iCalendar (.ics) & vCalendar (.vcs)? Should I export the Works calendar to both?

A:MS Works Calendar

These links from Filext.com may help you understand the differences somewhat better:
Extension: ICS
Extension: VCSTo me, it looks as though the VCS extension is used more often, but if you will be interacting with programs such as ICal or Lotus Notes, then you may want to save in ICS form, too.
If you ever find yourself in a bind and need a different extension version that what you have, you might want to check out ABC Amber iCalendar Converter.

I am running Works 8 in WinXP Home. Included in this program is Works Calendar which I have used extensively as a reminder for appointments on my desktop.

Recently, Works Calendar won't open in the Task Launcher; or, any other way. When I attempt to open I get a error message that reads;

"Works cannot access one or more files needed to run the
Calendar. The files may have been renamed, deleted or
moved. Try reinstalling Works, and then reinstalling the
program again."

I've tried reinstalling, following three different MS Knowledge Base Documents that describe how to overcome this problem, but none makes a difference.

I had a similiar problem in a earlier version of Works some years ago and finally found that I had to reinstall a file in Win98. Unfortunitly, I don't remember; or have, a copy of this file and am hopeful that someone else has encountered the same problem and knows the solution.

Whenever I back up MS Works Calendar, it restores in triplicate when I restore the files. What gives here?

I'm glad I can save the information, but when I restore the data, I seem to be a very busy woman!!! Everything is repeated THREE TIMES!!!

I like this program, but it has several glitches and when I start having trouble with my computer, this MS Works Calendar is the first program to show up with corrupted files. Since my calendar data is some of the most critical information I have, I don't want to use an application that is not trustworthy.

Can anyone shed some light on why this program won't perform consistantly? I would like to use it if I can get a grip on controlling it's idiosyncrosies.

Cannot obtain correct printing from Microsoft Works Calendar.

The Microsoft site says this is common with Internet Exp.5.5-

I am using 6.0 and still have the same problem.

Have checked the printer with other programs and the printing

This should do it.
Open the calender, from the file menu select "export > HTML". Remember where you saved it to. Close the calender and go to the file you exported and double click it. It should open in Internet Explorer. Now select print from the file menu.

First of all, please let me say that I'm happy to have found this group, I have found what I have read very interesting.

Having said that...

I have Outlook 2000 on my Dell Dimension 8200 with Windows XP. I have always wanted my computer to boot with my calendar reminders for the day.

The thing is, (correct me if I'm wrong?) I have always believed that Outlook is resource intensive, so booting and keeping Outlook running would interfere with whatever I'm doing.

My Dell also came with Works 2002, and puts just a calendar reminder in the startup which would work for me, except that I've worked with Outlook first ( and didn't get my reminders till I opened it up )

What I was considering doing was somehow importing my Outlook Calendar to Works, let Works start up with the computer with my reminders... and then just continue to work with Works. ( I will also want to hotsync that with my HanSpring Visor for easy updates )

Would this be the best way to this? Is there an (inexpensive) easier way to do this?

Thank you in advance,
Ronjie

Works was already installed on the PC when I purchased it in May, 2010. I was able to gfet the Works Task Master on the screen and access all of the programs except the calendar. Now I cannot get the Task Master to run.

Naturally, HP did not give me a Works CD. Is there anything I can do?

A:Solved: works calendar will not open

This is a program that is prinstalled on most HP Computers and you wouldn't have gotten a disc for it. The only way to reinstall it is actually going to be to do a Factory Recovery on your computer, or Purchase the Works Program and do a fresh install of it.

My Dell OEM installation of MS Works 8.5 does not display any of the standard USA holidays. I've searched through the MS Knowledge(less) Base of useless information but couldn't find anything on this subject - even though I have to believe that Mr. Gates Brownies would have thought of this very common need.

Please tell me how to get Works to display these holidays. Help will be very much appreciated.

Help! I posted the following in the business software forum 2 months ago, and have had no replies. Surely there is someone out there with a possible solution!

My MS works reminder system has failed - it no longer pops up automatically to remind me of an entry on the calendar. I tried reinstalling Works, but this did not help.
It is possible this is related to a new computer, but I thought it was still working after the program was transferred to this computer.
I am using XP Pro (was XP Home on the old computer).
Someone suggested copying the shortcut to the start menu, but I am just computer illiterate enough that I couldn't figure that one out. Besides which, the program worked fine for a long time after the original installation.

My computer is working slowly and is running 41 processes when there are no programs running.

Whenever the computer boots, I get a "Windows was forced to shut down..." message which I think refers to my calendar trying to deliver an alert upon start up.

I cannot get MS Works to run, but receive the same error message as above.

Thanks in advance,

George

I had to do a complete wipe and restore. I thought I was doing it right by having a solid backup (Norton Ghost). After completing the reinstallation of my software, I went to my backup to restore my calendar data from microsoft Works 7 which is very important to me. I cannot seem to find the data. Restoring Microsoft works 7 Doesn't populate the data that was in my calendar. I tried to restore selected items from C:/program files/common files, and the files from Microsoft shared with no luck. My computer prior to the restore was a real mess, so I do not want to restore a lot of corrupt files. Does anyone know where the data is stored?

From what I have read, mswkscal.wcd file is the calendar data file; I think it may be kept in a hidden folder, so be sure to do your search for it accordingly.

Hello,
I've searched these forums and found a partial clue to help me solve this problem, but need some additional info.

When I try to use the MS Works Calendar, I get the following error message:

"Works cannot access one or more files it need to run the Calendar. The files may have been renamed, deleted or moved. Try reinstalling Works, and then starting the program again."

I have reinstalled Works, but am still getting the same error message.

When I searched these forums, I was disappointed to find a few topics about the Works Calendar, which were closed because no one had ever replied. However, I did find this one which indicates that the problem can be solved by applying a fix from MS. But it doesn't say where to find the fix, or even name it. I have searched MS up and down, but can't seem to find whatever this member found.

So, does anyone know what fix they might have been referring to?

I'm using a rather old version -- Works Suite 2002, version 6 -- but when it works, is quite sufficient for my needs. This is on XP Home SP 3, fully updated.

Thank you very much, I really appreciate your help

My son says you are the best for troubleshooting, so here goes. I have a Toshiba laptop wireless and all the programs came pre-installed with a Recovery disk ONLY included. I have Windows XP Home Edition. My problem is with the Microsoft Works 8.0 Calendar, which was pre-installed along with Microsoft Office S&T Edition, which I do not use. The Calendar was working fine until yesterday and now I get an error message that just says "Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close." Then I can choose whether or not to send an error report, which I have....several times. I've read the "official" Microsoft version of the fix, but it is telling me that I possibly have a corrupted file and to reinstall it from the Works CD, which I do not have. When I run the recovery CD, there is no Microsoft Works listed in programs to recover. I'm really at a loss! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!! MomM

Before I describe my problem, I want to let you all know that this is my work laptop.  My work IT people have already tried a lot of things such as combofix, malwarebytes, restore points, etc for THREE DAYS.  Therefore, I apologize in advance if the work that they did make it more difficult to fix.  I am coming here as my last resort before they reimage my computer.

At the beginging of this week (2/25), I noticed that I cannot access any website via Chrome.  Chrome shows a circle animiation in the upper left hand corner of the window.  I have no problem in accessing the same website with IE.  One interesting observation is that all icons (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Search, etc) show "color" when I bring up Chrome.  This usually mean that they can access their associated services.  Chrome can still access my gmail setting, including my bookmarks etc.  I looked and did not notice any redirection in my proxy settings.

I contacted my IT guys then an they tried every which way possible to fix my problem.  They noted that Chrome would work in "no sandbox" mode but that's not safe.  They said I had some malware infection and they took care of them.  However, even Malwarebytes show zero infection, Chrome never works.  IE never has any problems.

I hope that I can find some help in this forum.  Here is the DDS log.

I finally joined after lurking around trying to google my way out of my problem. I really need to speak with humans about this.

I have two hard drives, both WD, a blue 250 and a black 500. If I go to transfer something off my C drive to my E drive it'll go for about 3 seconds then hang. Sometimes I can cancel out and save myself a hard reset. Most of the times I have to hard reset when it freezes. My big problem is the fact that I cannot transfer files to my secondary hard drive. The thing that really pisses me off is that sometimes once in a blue moon it works just fine. I had it going about a month ago where it would transfer slowly (10-15 Mbs) but at least it kept going. It will not transfer at full speed like I'd really want it to. I've ticked any box I can, I've found no reliable way to jiggle the handle on this problem. I turn every extraneous process off and it still freezes. This problem wasn't always present. I installed Mass Effect 2 and Fallout 3, both fairly hefty games on it and I can play with no huge system freezes. Fallout 3 is a little crash happy but I'm sure that has more to do with the game than the HD. I was able to install Dragon Age onto it and in 29 hours of playtime it has only crashed 4 times and they were all run of the mill "not responding" crashes. I can watch video that is already on the second hard drive with no problems even 1080p stuff. Basically if it's already on it I can use it, but the second there is any movement ... Read more

A:My only problem. HD transferring

Wow man, plenty of detail.

I've had the same problem, and I was pretty sure that the drive was toast, buuut...

Sometimes these "controller failures" turn out to be a dodgy cable that either has come loose, or isn't fit properly on the motherboard or drive connector. If you don't have locking SATA cables, they are a good investment. I find that WD drives have a slimmer SATA connector that not every cable fits into snugly.

As far as the RAID issue, that really shouldn't be a problem (I don't think, anyway), because Windows or Nvidia has the RAID controllers installed by default. My wife's Nvidia based board loaded them with the driver pack, but my AMD based board didn't until I started using AHCI mode for my drives. Then I had to load a RAID driver, even though I'm not using RAID.

Check your cables, and see if it improves. The fact that it's intermittent makes that a good possibility. Post back and let us know how it works out.

I've just bought a new PC and installed Windows XP - all working fine with a Maxtor external drive also installed and connected via USB/Firewire.

I needed to get the data from the 80gb Samsung HD installed as a second drive in my previous computer. I decided it would be easiest to just take this out of the old computer and put it in the new one.

It was hard getting the Samsung HD into the new PC because of the cables layout - it doesn't fit fully in the bay either but in my experience they never do. I think I managed to get it connected without damaging it (cutting my finger in the process, bah) but I had to swap the two spare connectors around so that the one previously connected to the pre-installed master drive was now connected to the slave.

When I turned the new PC back on it listed the Samsung drive as the Primary Slave so I figured all would be cool. But Windows XP failed to boot and the PC just seemed to stall after getting past the initial Windows startup/loading screen.

I managed to get XP to boot by resetting the PC, going into Setup and changing the setting for the Samsung drive from Auto to None.

Problem is now I don't know how to get XP to recognise the drive properly. Windows lists it as D: (previously this was the DVD-ROM, which is now E - E was previously the Maxtor external drive!) but says 'this drive is not formatted. do you want to format it now?'

I took out the slave drive and replaced it with another. This drive in now is actually the one I originally intended to use. The previous slave drive had been a master drive before - perhaps this was a problem. The new slave drive had been the slave on my previous PC.

I'm trying to help a friend who has just installed Office 2016 on her computer, which was recently upgraded from Win7 to Win10.

She's been using Outlook.com and has accumulated a fair amount of email, contacts and calendar appointments. I've managed to get her email to show up by adding it to Outlook 2016 as a POP3 account. I was able to import her contacts into Outlook 2016 from a file called OutlookContacts.csv. Now I'm trying to get her calendar with all its many calendars and appointments into Outlook 2016.

I'm not sure why but the appointments all show up just fine in Mail and Calendar for Windows 10, even though we did nothing to put them there (as far as we know). But she'd like them to appear when she clicks on the Calendar in Outlook 2016 and I can't find any information on how to do that. I've also looked for some kind of Export function in the Mail and Calendar for Windows 10 app but I came up empty.

How do I get her calendar into Outlook 2016?

I can't be the only one who finds Microsoft *awful* at documenting this kind of basic functionality. Millions of people must have tried to do the same thing before me but if there's any information out there on how to do this, it has eluded me so far....

A:Export calendar from Mail and Calendar for Windows 10 to Outlook 2016?

You can manually export calendars from Outlook.com using a round-a-bout method I posted at this link. However, I don't think that's going to help you because what you really want to do is set up Outlook 2016 so that her email, calendar and contacts sync with (and stay in sync with) her Outlook.com account.

Therefore, instead of setting email up as a POP account and then importing calendar, contacts, etc. separately, why not just setup Outlook 2016 to work with her Outlook.com account? I haven't done it with Outlook 2016, only older Outlook versions that used Hotmail Connector, however the following instructions for Outlook 2016 seem fairly straight forward.

If she has two-factor authentication switched on for her Outlook.com account, then you may need to generate an app password from her Outlook.com account, and use that as the password instead of the actual Microsoft Account password.

The Basics
Using Windows 10 Calendar (Outlook) as my primary calendar. The calendar contains two accounts, my Microsoft Live Account and my Gmail Account. In the left panel, I have the Gmail Calendar checked ? the Outlook calendar is unchecked. When I add an event, the default dropdown is my Gmail calendar which is what I want as my default.
My Problem
Events that I add to my calendar show up in both my Outlook calendar and my Gmail calendar as expected ? or maybe not quite as expected. I?ve just discovered that if I add an event several months in the future, it momentarily appears on my Outlook calendar and then is deleted (I see a brief deleted message appear). If I then go directly to my Gmail calendar, the event I just added shows up as expected. As of today (March 24), the cutoff date when the Windows/Outlook calendar automatic deletes begin to occur is September 7 (or 167 days from now). I haven?t yet experimented to see if the cutoff date moves forward every day.
Very strange. Anybody know what?s going on. If you have a similar calendar setup as mine, give it a try and see if your experience is the same. By the way, my Windows 10 system is fully updated.

I recently just switched my Os to a SSD, and it runs pretty fast but I've run into two problems.

Occasionally my system just freezes for like 20 seconds, I have no idea what is causing it.

Secondly the 2tb drive that came with the system ( the one I replaced with an ssd) shuts down when I try to transfer files to it. I formatted it, and when I try to move files to it, it goes pretty slow, and eventually says location not available and the drive completely shuts off.

both these problems are extremely frustrating! Any help would be wonderful. I feel like I did not install this ssd right or that it isn't functionally properly!

A:Transferring files problem.

First problem might be connected to second one, whenever you do anything on either disk and if that HDD is in poor shape it it would reflect in whole system. You could start with checking HDD for errors, defragment it, turn "Sleep" mode for it off and eventually divide it in two or more partitions.

Hello everybody,
my online outlook calendar does not sync with my Windows Calendar app. I am talking about the online calendar which can be accessed after sign-in here: Prihláste sa do svojho konta Microsoft which for me used to always take all the information from my desktop calendar app, and vice-versa, when I entered an event online, it also appeared in my desktop app. This was useful for syncing with my phone and generally accessing my calendar when not having my laptop on me. This is now impossible for me to do.

Now they don't sync and it's quite annoying, I am getting desperate and thinking of using some other app (if you have tips, tell me. I went through this: Resolve sync issues in Mail and Calendar apps in Windows 10 - Office Support it did not solve the problem. I have updates on (I apply them manually). Thank you in advance for any help.

Also, I am adding a picture if it helps, on the left is my calendar, when I access it online, on the right is my Windows App. You can clearly see that there is a lot more on the right. I just want the events to appear in the online calendar as well, as they did before...

Check the device manager to see if the card reader is working correctly. It will have a exclamation point or red x next to it if it is not. Deleting it and rebooting the system will allow Windows to reinstall the driver. This will fix it in most cases.

My OS is Windows XP Home Edition SP3 and up to date. I share this PC with my daughter who normally has a limited account while mine is the administrator account. For some strange reason while uninstalling/reinstalling my Firewall, on reboot I have lost the Windows starting, Log-On, Log-off and Recycle bin sounds. All my other video / audio sounds are working perfectly and it isn't a fault with the soundcard.
In Sounds and Audio Devices>Sounds, I have the appropriate sounds when I test them but the ones mentioned above are not working on my account. I checked my daughters account and they are all working there so thinking it was a corrupt account problem I decided to open a new account and transfer all my files to it before deleting my old account on completion.
First I changed my daughters account to administrator then following the tutorial I downloaded from here one time I opened a new account. I then entered my daughters "now administrative" account, ticked the two boxes and applied to show hidden folders and then I have to copy and paste the files and subfiles from my old account to my new account but cannot as I cannot see the folder for my account. I can see my daughters account folder as well as the shared and new account folders but not my present account folder.
I have a vague memory of making my account folders private once but cannot remember what i did, so cannot undo it. I have googled the problem but did not find a solution, so hopefully I can fi... Read more

A:Problem transferring files to new account?.

on you acount you need to follow these instructions to make them unprivate

To make your folders private
Open My Computer.
Double-click the drive where Windows is installed (usually drive (C:), unless you have more than one drive on your computer).
If the contents of the drive are hidden, under System Tasks, click Show the contents of this drive.

Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
Double-click your user folder.
Right-click any folder in your user profile, and then click Properties.
On the Sharing tab, select the Make this folder private so that only I have access to it check box.
Notes

To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.
This option is only available for folders included in your user profile. Folders in your user profile include My Documents and its subfolders, Desktop, Start Menu, Cookies, and Favorites. If you do not make these folders private, they are available to everyone who uses your computer.
When you make a folder private, all of its subfolders are private as well. For example, when you make My Documents private, you also make My Music and My Pictures private. When you share a folder, you also share all of its subfolders unless you make them private.
You cannot make your folders private if your drive is not formatted as NTFS.

I just bought a 120gb Intel 520 series SSD and I'm trying to transfer some of my files from my 1TB HDD. I'm using Intel's Data Migration Software which they recommended I used. For me though, it will not let me transfer because I have over 120gb of memory on my HHD. That was expected though.

I was hoping that this migration software would let me transfer some of my files (games from steam or OS if I have room) over to my new SSD but it will not. Does anyone know of a way to do this with this software or any other free software?

Sorry that I do not know much about SSD's, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A:Tech Problem: Having issues transferring to new SSD

Hello squintz69 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

When attempting to transfer files from a larger capacity drive onto a smaller one the first thing needed is a look at just large the files and folders are. The Steam folder here wouldn't even fit on any 120gb drive regardless of the type of drive. The main sub folder to back up from the "C:\Program Files(x86)\steam folder would be the SteamApps folder which contains the user account information, game saves, any patches, and any game mods added onto the Steam game library.

Try 158gb for a start! That's likely a bit larger then what you have there but shows why the Intel migration software is running into problems. The amount of data you are trying to transfer is larger then the capacity of the SSD you have there.

Rather then any transfer program the best way to see files copied over is by the manual copy and paste as you watch the drive fill. You will want to right click on each folder as well to see how large it is as well as how much actual drive space is remaining as you go along.

If you were transferring files from the 120gb drive onto a larger 1tb drive the opposite would be having plenty of drive space left over and not running into the "out of memory" error seen when any drive reaches capacity. The manual copy and paste, pick and choose which files, folders method is the better option to avoid this type of problem.

I have 2 computers both have win7 32 bit.
When I go to transfer a game by thumbdrive, it somehow magically
changes the exe file, to the point that even the icon changes back to a standard one and it will not install

the game is dream chronicles. All settings and compatibilities are the same. When I put the thumbdrive with the program on it, into my main computer it is fine, but when the thumbdrive is placed into the other computer it changes. I have checked permissions and run scannow, and also have run the fix for file extensions. Restarted several times and even let the battery run down.

All help greatly appreciated and will be tried!

What version of Windows 7? It could be possible that your main computer's hard drive is BitLocker encrypted or maybe the thumbdrive is encrypted with BitLocker on the go.

Hi,
I bought an inspiron 5448 from Singapore from a retail store. And I registered my product while I was in Singapore. But Now I am in Sri Lanka and my laptop went dead yesterday. I am still within international warranty period. So when I contacted service provider for Dell in Sri Lanka (Softlogic) they asked me to transfer the warranty to Sri Lanka.
So when I try to transfer it , after entering the service tag in the very first step of the process I get a message
'This system cannot be transferred at this time. Please go to Retail Registration to register your system.'
Since I have already registered there's nothing I can do further in retail registration. It says 'your pc has already registered'. Since my Laptop is dead and I need to solve this issue quickly. PLEASE HELP.
Thanks in Advance.

A:Transferring warranty and ownership problem

I am really disappointed in the way that dell supported me on this issue. I have sent mail to the support, put two posts in support forums. But its been a month since my laptop is down and i get zero response from dell. I will not recommended dell for anyone because of this bad bad customer support. Finally i managed to fill the transfer request but its been 10 days and no progess on that also. Disappointed

My laptop has Win XP Pro SP3. I copied 2 files (1 DOC, 1 PDF) to a 4GB FAT32 USB stick with nothing else on it, and took them to my sister’s place to print (I don’t have a printer) – she has a desktop and a laptop, both running Windows 7. I was able to read the 2 files OK on the Windows 7 desktop and print them.

My brother in law then copied several jpg files from the Windows 7 laptop to the USB stick. However, when I took the USB stick home and put it in my XP laptop, the jpg files didn’t appear in Windows explorer, or with the DOS DIR command – the only 2 files shown were the 2 I originally copied. Further, the PDF file is now shown as having 0 length, and both files appear to be corrupt – I couldn’t open either of them with Word or Adobe reader. However the used space on the USB stick (properties in Windows explorer) is shown as about 32MB, which I seem to remember is about the total size of the files copied from the Windows 7 laptop (the DOC and PDF files were very small). My brother in law used the "safely remove hardware" option before removing the USB stick.

Are there problems copying files from Windows 7 to XP via USB sticks (I don’t know anything about Windows 7), or is it more likely to just have been some glitch while copying the files?

I am in the process of moving to a different computer. The one I had before is a laptop ASUS with Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. The one I'm transferring to is a Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I copied a very large folder onto a 32 gig flashdrive, put it in the new computer & it did not show. Other smaller files did show, but not this one. The flashdrive shows the space being used. How do I get the file on my new computer?
