Log On Screen Saver - Enable or Disable

A: Screen Saver Window 7 Logon Screen Slideshow

Hello ZMan, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You will not be able to have a slideshow with the logon screen saver. As in the tutorial, it can only be a blank black screen if enabled. Anything else, and you get that message in the NOTE box at the top of the tutorial.

Sorry,
Shawn

We recently reformatted my Mom's computer and cut down a lot of the fluff in Windows and all the other programs so it can actually run at a usable speed. But now, she doesn't have access to the slideshow screensaver option (select a folder and the screensaver is a slideshow of all the pictures in the folder).

Is there a way to recover this? In "Display Properties-Screen Saver" - it doesn't come up at all.

If not, what are some good, free, and relatively easy to use programs that aren't horribly bulky or full of crap to use for this? I mean, ideally it'd be the same thing as she used to do through Windows -- select a folder and be done with it, but I'm willing to try some other stuff.

Suggestions, please!

I have about 1,500 pictures that I want to use for my screen saver's slideshow. I want them to be displayed for about 2-3 seconds each.

The problem is that Windows XP allows me to set the slider at 6 seconds minimum.

Is it possible to get around this?

Thanks!

I'm running Vista Enterprise, fully patched. I have a 128MB video card and 2GB of RAM. When I try to use the screen saver "photos" the screen saver will start, but the photos will flash constantly black-photo-black-etc. When I preview the slide show, this does not happen. I've moved around the start time of the screen saver, to make sure that nothing else starts up at the same time.

Why is this happening???

I have set up my Win 7 Pro 64-bit screen saver to bring up the password logon screen upon activation of the mouse/keyboard/whatever.

Late last week, whenever I moved the mouse or clicked the keyboard, the screensaver would go directly to the desktop, bypassing the logon screen. I went to the screensaver utility and unchecked and rechecked the 'On resume, display the logon screen' box, selecting 'Apply and OK' each time.

This would work for maybe two or three times and then go back to returning to the desktop.

I've run MalwareBytes, IOBit, and Norton and all come up virus/rootkit free.

Any ideas?

A:Screen Saver to password logon screen failing

There are a few seconds of "grace" time, meaning when the screensaver launches you have a few seconds to "wake it" and go back to your desktop without locking it.

I guess I can assume you're not talking about that, right?

i have windows xp professional at work. we have multiple computers/monitors that are not in use at various times of the day. i am looking to change the logon screen saver(so no one has to actually be logged-on) on those computers/monitors to a powerpoint presentation(or something similar). i also need them to pull from a common drive/file, so it can be changed daily in 1 place(vs going to every computer and updating them individually). i have already played around with this, going through the registry and changing the screensaver(hkey users\default\control panel\desktop scrnsave.exe, edit string box, value data box). i was successful in changing the screensaver to the standard ones available, but cannot figure out how to change to pull from a common drive. is this possible? i am willing to buy software to accomplish this. thanks to all for any help! dan

I have a fingerprint readers installed on my desktop machine and my laptop. On my laptop, anytime it goes to sleep after being idle I have to use my fingerprint to wake it. This is not the case with the desktop. I would like to make it so. I thought the option for secure logon/wake was in the display/sceen saver settings, but I can't seem to find it.

A:Security logon after screen saver time out/sleep.

OThe only setting I know of is the checkmark next to the delay timer that says "On resume, display logon screen" (or words to that effect - the exact wording varies slightly depending on your settings). Checking this causes Windows to ask for password - presumably the fingerprint reader in your case.
Edit: The screensaver delay timer, sorry

a friend told me how to set up my screensaver so that it scrolls thru all my pictures in "my pictures" folder. I've done so, but there's quite a delay between pictures, it doesn't seem like it's showing pictures from the whole folder, sometimes the pictures are very small off to one corner, and in-between pictures the screen is blank for a bit and usually has a symbol on it such as a musical note, "exit", a figure running, etc. My friend seems to have hers set up the same way, but it doesn't have these problems. It just scrolls thru her pictures, one after the other, with the pictures taking up the whole screen.

I have my screensaver set for ten minutes and have my monitor set to go blank at 20. That is what yours is doing. If you want to change the time before it goes blank check in your Control Panel under Power Options. You should not leave your screen on all the time, there is no reason. Let it go blank after about 20 minutes.

This is a strange little problem that's really bugging me. Just recently my computer started to hang at the logon screen. Whenever I click on my account, Window's is telling me "loading your settings" as usual. Now the weird part is when it takes a bit longer then usual to load my account. Then when it proceeds to the desktop, there's nothing there!!! I can see my wallpaper but the taskbar and all my icon's are missing. I tried Ctrl+Alt+Del but the task manager didn't pop up either. I then manually restarted my computer and click on my account again. Now my account loads fine and I can see all my icon's and the taskbar. How in the world did it start correctly this time?! Mind you that this problem doesn't happen all the time but if I shut down my computer and turn it back on, it usually happens. Would it be perhaps that an application is trying to run at startup? Perhaps a virus of some sort?

Screensaver is enabled and so is 'Display welcome screen when coming back from screensaver'.

This works most of the time, however on a regular basis the screensaver will resume to the following screen and just stay there forever.

The only thing to do is to press the power button, at which point a popup alerts that a user is logged in, do you still want to shut down.

A:Window XP Pro Ctrl-Alt-Delete Logon Screen

Not too sure what will cause that, but perhaps if you were to disable and then re-enable it, it might come back to normal.

Go to Start > Run... and type in "control userpasswords2" without the quotes. Click on the Advanced tab, then uncheck the box "Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete".

Restart, log in as normal, then follow these steps again to re-enable it. Let us know how it goes.

I am aware of the Screen Saver setup and modify capabilities in the Personalization menu. I am also aware that there is a Preview button there also.
There is a program in the Windows system files that you can put on the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen. You can then click this Icon and manually start the Screen Saver.
I however (in my infinite stupidity) have forgotten the name of this program and where it is located. Can someone please tell me what its name is and where it is located?

Hello all-
Purchased a Dell desktop with Win 8 on it through an employee purchase program. Also purchased MS Office and Photoshop Elements. When I received the computer it had no boot disc and none of the other add on software. Was instructed to call their support number that came with the unit and everything was installed via the internet except the OS and some other programs. So I have no boot disc.

OK, so I did an update to my McAfee software and I rebooted and logged on and now get the doomed black screen of death. Have a cursor. Can get to boot options (F12) or task manager but that's it. HELP please.

Thanks to all who can assist me.

Hi,
I have a Dell 1750 Inspiron laptop that I use "as a desktop" as every piece of hardware is connected to it.
It runs with Windows 7 Home Edition. It has a 4gb memory and a 450gb hard drive which is less than half used.

I have the screen saver set to Photos and usually have a cut-in time of 1 hour idle.

The screen saver cuts in exactly when it should and scrolls through my photos for as long as the laptop is left idle.

However, as soon as I touch the mouse/keyboard, instead of reverting to the "normal" screen the photos disappear, the blank screen fades for a few seconds and then a message appears in a box, saying that the Photos Screen Saver is not responding, and gives the options of either close the program or wait for the programme to respond. Waiting doesn't seem to work so I have to click on close the programme and then cancel the statement that Windows will try to find a solution, because it doesn't!

I have tried to vary the time before the screen saver kicks in, anything from 1 minute to several hours but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Can anyone help please?

A:Photo Screen Saver wont revert back to live screen

Have you checked the timing for when the HDD turns off or Sleep or Hibernation kicks in [I disable both of those and lengthen the time on the HDD to several hours], Control Panel, Power Options?

The reason I mentioned the HDD is the symptoms you mentioned seem to apply. The screen saver could be in memory and not affected by the HDD until it's asked for something.

I did an upgrade from Win 7 , and Screen Saver / Turn off display after 5 mins was working under Win 7 64 bit
As my title suggest Screen Saver / Lock screen Slideshow / Turn off display after 5 mins are not working under Win 10
The Lock screen Slideshow is there when Win 10 starts but only shows ONE image, never moves to another.
THINGS I've done so far to get any of these working ...Screen Saver / Lock screen Slideshow / Turn off display after 5 mins
I’ve turned off all the Wake on lan functions
Tried different folder/ images for the lockscreen Slideshow ,window spotlight and picture
Tried to set new power options , was able to get SLEEP to show up in "Start" as it was not there before, but once click , the display DID turn off, but wouldn’t turn back on with mouse movement keyboard presses, had to do a hard reboot. Win 10 started without issue and the SLEEP mode was no longer aviable via the power "start" menu.
Anyone have a clue how to get all of these working. Really would like my display to turn off after 5 mins , and the Screen saver to work , the Lockscreen I'm not fussed about

Hibernation in it self saves everything thats in RAM at the time the system is put into that mode. It should not lock the PC as that wasn't the state it was in before it hibernated. perhaps lock the PC before you push the hibernate button!

I am having a very wierd issue with vista's screen saver. So basically when I leave the comp idle it goes into screen saver then turns off the monitor after 15 mins. Sometimes, more often than not, I come back and move the mouse and hit a few keys on the keyboard and nothing. The monitor wont come out of standby I try turning it off and back on, and nothing. I have the latest drivers for everything in my system and I checked the power management settings and they both are able to wake the computer up. I have a G15 keyboard and I keep the leds on and when this happens the leds are off and the lazer for the mouse is off too. Any suggestions as to what my problem is would be fantastic!

I have a very strange problem, I'm stumped and would appreciate any help.
On my new HP6910 laptop, when my XP Pro SP3 (system default XP) Screen Saver comes on, the screen has a partial heavily corrupted copy of the bottom taskbar at the top of the screen (!) and when I ctrl-alt-delete and enter my password the taskbar at the bottom is missing all of its text but otherwise looks reasonable. The Oulook, Word, and other started tasks in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen have their icons, just no text, even if there is a group of them and you hover the mouse over the group and they expand. Most of them still work, but Windows Desktop Search (WDS) doesn't work and I have to close them and restart them. This seemed to start a few days after I installed WDS, added a DVI monitor to the docking station and the same day I installed Activesync 4.5. I've reinstalled WDS and removed my wallpaper but this didn't help, I'm about to reinstall Activesync but it takes a few hours to sync for the first time so I thought I would see if anybody had any other ideas before doing this.
All help is greatly appreciated!

OK here is my problem.
I have a (my kid?s) HP Pavilion DV6-7002ax (aka dv6z-7000 (AMD-A10-4600M) using Win 7 (64) Home Premium and it has lately (last few weeks) developed a weird ?blue screen with active cursor? hanging habit.

After you log-on and the welcome screen pops up with the spinning circle and then before the desktop displays it switched to displaying a pale blue screen, with active mouse cursor.
Up to that ?blue screen? point, after logging on, the ?boot? is slow but normal, based upon my experience with this HP Pavilion.

This blue screen delay/hanging lasts around 3 ? 5 minutes and then the desktop loads and all is well.
I have searched the web and found many references to black and blue screens with active cursor related to HP Laptops but I have not found a real solution that has fixed my problem. Apart from just wait and wonder!

Suggestions I have tried include;
1. Scanned with Emsisoft Anti-Malware, Malwarebytes Anti- Malware, SUPERAntispyware (including in Safe Mode)
2. Specialty Scan with AdwareCleaner, rkill, TDssKiller, CCleaner
3. Registry Clean and Defrag with Wise Registry Cleaner
4. F5 > F8 > System Repairs Tools > Repair Startup (HP Pavilion has partition for System Repair)
5. F10 BIOS ? no issues that I can find
6. Command Prompt > sfc scannow (System File Checker)

A:Pale Blue Screen with active cursor after logon & Welcome screen

There is a hotfix for this issue, with the issue being so wide spread one would think Microsoft would put it in an update. The hotfix is called Windows6.1-KB2578159, make sure to download the 64 bit version from Microsoft's site. This will hopefully fix your issue. At the hospital I work at we have had this issue a lot and just now found this hotfix, so I can't say for sure if it will fix your issue. Also make sure you have all the Windows updates installed. Hope that helps.

After installing the latest NVIDIA 182.50 Drivers for my 8500 GeForce 8500GT card on my Gateway AMD x64 with Vista Home Premium 64bit, now at start up the Boot screen doesn't come up and neither does the Vista green loading bars, just get black screen, no signal until the Vista Logon screen appears. I used to get the Boot screen with F10 boot options and F2 BIOS options and the Gateway Logo, but not anymore.

Any idea why and how I can get the boot screen back ??

It may be that someone didn't turn off the PC rather that it experienced a damaging event and shut down.Suggest you check the RAM - remove and reseat and try rebooting. If not successful your mother board may be damaged - nasty thought. There is also this site which may be relevant.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831515If you can get your PC going suggest you check Event Viewer. Then restore files from the recycle bin and then use SHIFT/DELETE to get rid of them, delete a small file and see if emptying the recycle bin works OKPaul

Hi people, i've just registered to this forum to ask you about this, Since i've made a registry defrag with TuneUp Utilities (which probably has gone wrong), when i reset the computer, and I logon to my user, it shows a black screen, then back at the logon screen. If I do it again, the user doesn't show up anymore!
It happened three times already, i had to make new users, and i'm sick of it. Any ideas of what could it be?

A:Black screen after login for some seconds, then back at logon screen!

Welcome!

Yet another case of registry defraggers causing harm. In the future, you know now to stay far away from them.

I suggest a system restore to get to a point before TuneUp utilities. If that doesn't work, it will be time for a repair install.

Good luck!

A BSoD issue...

PIII Intel 82845 motherboard PC with Win XP SP2.
I had previously installed Vista Pack (thus replacing the Logon UI interface, other start menu etc) However that was removed half a yr back. It didn't quite uninstall Logon Ui. However, that did not pose any problem, as the XP without traces of Vista Pack continue to Boot up (although Logon screen splashed Vista type Logon Ui)..

That was to prepare you for history of this XP installation.

then, few days back, I used a exhaustive program called TuneUp utilities for XP 2008 edition. Somehow, I got hooked into changing Display setting etc. No probs. However, on few tries of changes, I happened to remember I clicked on the Configuration option of , 'Switch to Default Windows XP Logon UI' or something that prompted that TuneUp wants to bypass the VistaLOGON Ui.

After that setup change, the XP goes to boot process. On appearance of Logon screen, which somehow, it still props up old Vista Ui logon, a BOSD appears. STO P error. "Your system has been shutdown to prevent damage to registry."

I tried all options in Safe Mode, F8 button. I also used the "Don't shutdown on bluescreen option" That's how I managed to note down the Registry thing.

It also prompts me to disable 'Shadowing' option of RAM in BIOS. Although I doubt, cause the XP was working fine without any bios change.

I do not hv any backup disk or a bootable XP disk. Though I am having a Win95 partition and can boot to... Read more

Slowly but surly I am getting the system up and running...now we are in the fine tuning stage...
I now have the screen saver working, but there is one slight catch, after the screen saver has been on for a while and I move the mouse, the screen clears and what is left behind is the log on logo and I have to click on that to get back to the primary screen,
How do not have to go to the log off screen and just continue with my screen/window that I was on before the screen saver kicked in.

Hi, first post here by a rather happy Lenovo Yoga 13 + Windows 8 user.

As the topic says, is it possible to have the lockscreen turn on automatically after a few minutes?

As it is now I can only get to the lock screen after waking up the computer from the screen saver. I would like to have it configured so that the traditional screen saver is bypassed and it goes straight to the lock screen and stays there forever until I swipe it up.

I think the lockscreen is a very beautiful feature and it's great to see all these small notifications. It would be wonderful to just be able to glance at my computer and seeing these notifications without actually having to touch it.

I feel it's kind of useless to only see the lock screen while you're actually logging in, because then you'll see your notifications anyway on your start screen.

A:Can I use the lock screen as a screen saver?

The easiest way is to right click your account icon on top right of Start Screen and Lock it.

Don't know of a way to auto lock.

Hi,

I found out that Update 1 (KB2919355) causes logon screen and lock screen issue.

Custom background for both screens are not displayed, instead of custom background there is a solid black background.

Uninstalling this update rolls back this issue and both screens are displayed correctly. Confirmed on Win 8.1 Pro x64.

I'm gonna report it to Microsoft.

Best regards,

I have tried to reboot in Safe Mode and 'Last Known Working' mode but the same blue screen appears.

As I dont have a XP Home install disk (only boot disk supplied with laptop), I could not repair my registry so I have installed a parallel version of Windows XP Pro that came with another PC. I can access the hard disc so I will be able to back up most of my files BUT I cannot access the Documents and Settings of my user from the original OS because I selected 'Make this Folder Private' when I made the account.

Does anyone know of a way to disable the 'Make This Folder Private' option on an account that is on a parallel version of XP?

My PC was working fine before today, until I used Ultra UXtheme patcher for Win8 x64 and then applied a custom VS for Win8.
After a restart, Windows Explorer was not launching, so I opened task manager and did a sfc /scannow. After a reboot, I get to the Windows 8 boot menu (I have a dual-boot on this HDD with win7), and then the screen just turns on and off every few seconds, with the numlock light flickering with the screen.
I tried using the automatic repair, both from the boot menu and from a backup USB, but it does not detect anything. and I still have the same issue.
I restored the backups of uxtheme.dll, uxinit.dll, and themeui.dll, but that didn't help either.
Any help?
Attached is my ntbtlog.txt.
Thanks in advance. There is no BSOD, the HDD keeps on spinning a few minutes after boot, and the numlock keeps on flashing.
Anything else I can do from my win7 install? I'm currently trying to delete the theme.
Edit: deleting the theme doesn't help, safemode doesn't help either. IMHO, it seems to be a driver issue, but there were no driver updates when it was working?

Hi everyone,
I am so glad to have found this forum and to see that others in the past with similar problems have had them resolved, looking forward to nutting this one out
ISSUE
The computer is a win XP with RAID that freezes the mouse and the keyboard if a mouse or keyboard button is touched at the logon screen.
The mouse works fine until a button is pressed, you can even click on a user but are unable to enter a password due to the keyboard and mouse freezing at this moment.
NOTE: originally happened with a USB keyboard and USB mouse, using PS2 keyboard and mouse.
BACKGROUND
I am writing about my fathers old computer which suddenly started “freezing up” at the logon screen, after he wasted weeks trying to get it to work he decided that it was a hardware issue and bought himself a new computer.
Since then I have proved that there was no hardware error by putting an extra HDD in and installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
Everything functions fine under Ubuntu and the files are able to be accessed on the RAID.
DESIRED OUTCOME
While i can access and copy files as needed from the RAID i would like to return access to the win XP install and let my father use it again.
STEPS TAKEN SO FAR
I first attempted to run Live rescue CD's but they could not find the RAID drive.
- Bit Defender Rescue CD – Saw the ubuntu drive, no RAID
- Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 – Didn't see any HDD's.
So I ran the following AV programs from ubuntu 12.04 LTS:

A command prompt window will open telling you what has been removed upon completion.
Note: All usb devices must be removed from your machine during this step, except your keyboard and mouse of course.

Step 3:

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop.
Close any open windows
Double click the TFC icon to run the program. (Vista/7/8 Users, Right Click and select Run as Admin)
TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run
Click the Start button to begin the process

I'm trying to set up my computer so it will automatically go to a slide show of my images when the computer has been inactive for a few minutes.  I found some directions that seemed pretty straighforward and I followed them.  But now, not only do I not see my images, but the screen isn't going to sleep at all.  If I leave my computer and come back an hour later, the screen is still lit up with whatever I was doing before I left.   What did I do wrong?

A:Slideshow for lock screen

Hi, I don't know why you need slideshow in the first place. This won't help the life of your screen (work harder) and will put a hole in your pocket (more electricity). By the way, if you wish to burn your laptop screen please watch the following video (applied for W8 and 10 too).              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEhvlrtK8ik Regards.

Vanilla Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop running Windows Vista. It has never had a login account or password protection, and is only used in single user mode.

Yesterday, start-ups fine, no password. Today, I'm presented with the user logon widow prompting me for a password, and cannot logon to Vista!

No-one has meddled with the laptop. Don't know if SP1 was automatically downloaded
and installed - whatever the factory defaults were from Dell. I've not seen any references to this kind of issue on Vista, but have heard about a similar thing with NT.

Any suggestions how this could have happened?

Yes - I know I can reset passwords using the NT Password Editor (http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/).

When I first setup the slideshow it worked fine.
Then, out of the blue, it stopped working (due to an update I thought)
But since then it comes and goes. It can work for a few hours but soon goes back to sleep mode instead of the lock screen slideshow!

I?ve even changed and re-changed the NoLockScreen setting in the registry.
In short, nothing works.
Has anybody any new ideas on the matter?

I have tried a couple of things since yesterday:I removed the NoLockScreen key from the registry.

I also disactivated the automatic time/date setting for the clock (as advised on another thread - no I don't understand the link either).

After reboot the lockscreen slideshow worked once but has since resorted to sleep mode, as before!!??

What is interesting to note is that if I force the lockscreen (windows+L) it works fine but asks for a password on exit, even though it is set not to (and otherwise does'nt ask, on boot for instance)

So I've noticed that whenever you have the Lock Screen Slideshow enabled, the ScreenSaver gets disabled, and vice versa (whenever you have a ScreenSaver enabled, your Lock Screen Slideshow gets disabled). Is this a bug in Windows 8.1, or is there a reason why Microsoft set it this way? (I honestly don't see what the reason could be for this).

And is there a work-around that I can do to be able to have both enabled?

Thank you

I have a problem with my fresh install of Windows 8.1. In the settings menu I have enabled the option to play a slideshow on the lockscreen and that when my PC is inactive it will show the lock screen instead of turning off the screen
For testing purposes I have set the screen turn off timer to 1 minute, but here's what happens:
After that one minute, the screen will dim slightly for a brief moment as if it wants to turn off the screen/go to the lockscreen slideshow. Then one minute later, it will do the exact thing again. Like it's being waked the second it wants to turn off the screen
Is anyone able to help me? It would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

A:Laptop won't turn off screen and play slideshow

It would be better to make a Photo Gallery Screensaver and use that, just point it to the pics you want to use in the screensaver setup.

I think the very settings you used to set up the Lockscreen Slideshow are preventing it from Locking. I don't know if you can tell your system to go to a Lockscreen after a certain period, it's either a screensaver or OFF. I'll try to set this up on my test machine and see if the same thing happens.

Hi

I hope one of you experts can advise!

I'm running a relatively modern desktop, with a SSD dedicated to my operating system; and have just upgraded to Windows 8.1 64 bit, from Windows 8

Having selected the option to run a slideshow on my Lock Screen, using images from a specified folder, I find that when I boot up, only the default image is displayed - The slide show does not run.
However, if I return to the Lock Screen setting up page, and press the Winkey and L keys simultaneously, I find that my PC returns to the Lock Screen, and the slide show runs perfectly.
So why does the slideshow not run, from boot up!

A:Windows 8.1 - Lock Screen Slideshow fails to run

Hello Theo,

In Windows 8/8.1, there are two lock screens.

One is for the current user that is signed in and locked the PC.

The other is the default lock screen when no user is signed in.

The desktop slideshow will only play on the lock screen for the user that has it turned on, signed in, and locked the PC.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I have Musicmatch and choose slideshow for visualizations, but I looked everywhere and can't figure out how to make the little slideshow box in the upper lefthand corner go full screen.

A:How do I make Musicmatch's slideshow full screen?

I don't think it does it..

I searched the knowledge base in support for "fullscreen" and all it said was this:

How to run visualizations full screen

Unfortunately, Musicmatch Jukebox does not currently support the ability to run visualizations full screen. If you would like to try to run them full screen anyway, you may be able to to go to "Media Window" from the View menu to bring up the Media Window (or double click inside the Media Window on the Player), then resize the window so that it fills the whole screen.

Hi everyone! I was installing a new theme from custopack tools and suddenly my dell x64 laptop (Build 7601 windows 7 sp1 installed) crashed on me. Most probably due to the loose power adapter wire. Now i cant get it back to work. It goes fine till the logon screen but then the screen turns black. I can see the mouse pointer. Same thing happens when i login with safemode settings. Anyone familiar with this!

A:Black screen after the logon screen

You know we could run a lot of complicated procedures, but I think a repair install is your quickest direct route to just looking at your desktop again.

We have a number of HP ProBook 430 G3's (30+) which are able to power on, pass the Windows 10 splash screen, but then have a grey screen where you would expect to see the typical log on screen. We have found that clicking the mouse, pressing enter (to accept the user policy message) and inputting the password of the last user and again pressing enter, will load their profile - though the start menu doesn't work. From here, I can right click the Windows button and sign out, which returns me to the log on screen, but this time correctly. Logging in again without rebooting and everything seems to works fine. So far, we have not detected any kind of pattern or repetition as to why this might be happening. Nor can we prevent it from happening in the future. Launching into Safe Mode and rebooting seems to get the machine back to normal for a while, as does removing the battery and holding the power button for 30 seconds, before trying to boot. It has become a huge problem and we're clutching at straws to resolve. Any help would be really appreciated.

A few days ago, my laptop froze the first time ever and I had to restart it (using the power button). When I then started it, everything would go fine until after the Microsoft loading bar thing (when the screen is black and the mouse is in the middle). I can move the mouse at that point, and if I press Caps Lock, the light goes on, but it doesn't move on to the welcome screen. I left it on the whole night to see if anything happens at all, but it doesn't move. Alt+ctrl+del doesn't work. Safe mode loads the welcome & logon screen, but after that the screen is black with safe mode written on top and corner and the mouse is there and you can move it, but nothing else shows up.

What's funny (well maybe not) is that I installed ubuntu a while back (the -install as a program on windows- version) to try it out and see if it's that different and I kept forgetting to uninstall it and when I select Ubuntu as my operating system when I turn on my computer, it works
Yea, Ubuntu works perfectly. So i can access all my files and basically do almost everything on here, but I'd still miss Windows because of some programs ..

I tried repairing the computer (i inserted the vista disk), but it found nothing. I did a memory test (basic), but it's all nothing. :/
I did a "check disk for errors" test and it shows nothing and when the computer turns on after that, the windows loading bar takes forever and when it reaches the blank screen with mouse phase, it stays there for ... Read more

A:welcome screen & logon screen or anything after that won't show

See if you can boot in safe mode. If so do a system restore from the point that you tried to improve the system that was developed by Microsoft.
If you can, do the system restore from normal mode, if not try it as said above.

This doesn't quite fit into the BSOD section, because it's not really a black screen of death.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate, 64x,
ATI Radeon HD 4800 series video card
4 Gb Ram
And an Intel 2 Quad.

What happens is the windows boot screen appears, then I get a black screen with a mouse cursor.

If I hit "Enter" on my keyboard, then type my password, windows boots onto my desktop.

So really the log on screen is still there...it's just kind of not.

If there are more details I should post please let me know.

I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10. the upgrade went smoothly. I use a folder of pictures as a slide show screen saver. After the upgrade the pictures are on the lower left portion of the screen and are too big to see the whole picture. All other pages and programs fit the screen just fine like before. How do I fix this?

Mine does it now and again, never really bothered me tbh.

I use my pictures as a screen saver, but it won't ever turn off, I don't want it to sleep because it takes to long to boot up again, any other suggestions? I have Vista. I didn't have this problem with windows xp. I want into prefrences and just told it when to stop the screen saver.

A:screen saver

I don't really understand what it is you want, I have my Pictures folder as the Screen Saver and it is set to activate after 10 mins of the computer being idle all other power savings are set to Never, whenever I want to use the computer again it's just a question of moving the mouse and the monitor is back to what it was either the desktop or if I left a program or forum open it would be back to that.

I'm running XP home. On screen saver tab in the display control panel, when "Windows" is selected as the screen saver, if you select the "settings tab", then the "general tab", it states that: "The system agent must be active in order for you to display the screen saver immediately by moving the mouse pointer to a corner on the screen."
I can't figure out where or what the system agent is and a search in windows "help" yields no match for "system agent" Does anyone know how to activate it?

O.K. try this. Go to control panel, display. Click on screensaver tab. See what the time is set for. You can change the amout of time before the screen saver will click on. Do not forget to click on the apply button or it will go back to the original setting.

So, I made a 3D animation (using <anim8or, FREE) for my teacher to use as a screensaver. The thing is, i don't know how to do that second part.

The file is an AVI and that is the only filetype I am capable of without a converter (wich I am currently lacking...), so if tat's a problem, darn.

If you're like me, then you're confused about what I just said.
I have an AVI that I want to make into a screensaver. How do I do that?
EDIT: After doing a google search, I found something... but it sucks. Any reccomendation of the "Avi/MPEG to Screensaver" program (.exe file is avimpeg.exe) will result in a dead end on my part. Seing as every search result i checked was for this particular file.

Thanksabunch

well a screen saver was downloaded to this computer but it also had this whole other thing with it (i think it was like my web search or something) but i deleted that did a virus scan and several spyware/ad-ware scans and got everything off i could, i did notice that those programs would slow down my computer and my computer seems a little better but it still doesnt seem as fast as it once was so i am not sure if everything is gone or not, but anyway here is the log file
