How to remove delete icons from taskbar notification

Q: How to remove delete icons from taskbar notification

I installed a few apps yahoo IM for example. It installed a taskbar notification icon, but when I deleted the application and rebooted it still shows a choice in the Customized section of the Notification Area in the Menu.
I found a fix for this, not sure if its the best way but it works! SO I hope some of you will enjoy this!

Be Warened you need to regedit!

#1. Regedit to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

#2. Delete the entries for IconStreams and PastIconsStream. (close Regedit)

#3. CTRL + ALT + DEL Start taskmanger Find Explorer in the Processes tab and end the task

#4. While in Task Manager click file, New Task (RUN) and type explorer

#5. Reboot

#6. Your GHOST icons should be gone now, however your customized settings will also be gone so you will need to change them again.

Hi experts,

after an automatic update on our PCs (W7P), some (not all) notification icons on the taskbar are missing and most of the ones visible are not clickable. Please see screenshot here:

You could try a system restore point to before the issue.

Hi ...

Click on 'Show more Icons' on the Taskbar, then click 'Customize...'
Now at the bottom of the Dialog click the link 1. 'Turn system icons on or off' then in the following Dialog (at the bottom again) click the link 2. 'Customize notification icons' again, - now just keep repeating doing steps 1 and 2 for a couple of times, THEN try clicking the 'Cancel' Button - and see how many times it takes to close the Dialogs?

On the first time you click The 'Cancel Button' it should close the Dialog - right?
But instead it takes a couple of 'Cancels'

Crazy aint it?

It's just Canceling each action you made if you chose 1 link it Cancels that then you need to Cancel the Notification Area next.

I've tried searching google and here, but without much success.

The problem is quite simple actually, but I don't know the cause or the resolution of the problem:

Notification Icons on the right side of the taskbar are not being loaded upon boot.
As I gather, programs are being loaded, but not shown on the taskbar.
A log off and log on resolves the problem, but ain't the permanent solution.

Also, a reboot doesn't solve it.

It's quite random actually, not always, but it happens more often than it doesn't.

I read something about timeout of the shell32.dll or so, but I only found modified files for Windows XP.

Can anyone help me out with this? Where should I start looking?

Thanks
Kosta

The icons in the Notification area (next to the time) of the taskbar, are too small to be legible. the rest of the Taskbar icons are OK. The hover text is also too small

Tried to widen the taskbar - no change. Under View - changing the size, only changes the desktop icon size.

Any thoughts? Thanks

A:Solved: Notification area of taskbar - icons

It could be that the resolution is too small for the monitor. Just asking, what is the size and type of the monitor anyway?

Right-click your desktop > Screen Resolution. Click the drop-down box next to Resolution, and change it to a lower value. 1024x768 for standard monitors, or 1280x768 for widescreens is reasonable.

Hi everyone,

Basically I want to have my left aligned task and navigation bar as narrow as possible. That being that the width of the vertical bar is narrower than the START button.

Let me tell you first that I searched for this in within the forum and there is another user who was wondering about this without being able to explain it and no apparent solution.

For those who may think that it cannot be done, I DID accomplish this before. In fact, I had it like this this morning until I had to rebooted the system. Unfortunately, despite several efforts, I have absolutely no clue on how to replicate it. The setting went back to a double lined icon bar size after the reboot and it's been bugging me for a few hours now.

Check this snapshot to see what I am talking about. I tried all the obvious settings within the properties. AutoHideTaskbar/HideLabels/NoLock. But I can't seem to be able to single line those notification icons. I even turned off all notification icons (date/clock/net/batt/etc) and the result is the same.

The way it looks in the snapshot is perfect for me but for the life of me, I can't seem to get it to look like that again. Spent way too much time already trying to figure this thing out.

Any ideas? Much appreciated.

PS. The snapshot has been edited to hide my ip address displayed by Rainmeter on the right.

A:Single line notification icons on a left taskbar. How did I do this?

Hi CmdrB and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you right click on an empty area on the taskbar and select properties. Set the dialogue as shown in the screen clip.

You may then need to unlock the taskbar. Right Click and select unlock and then drag the edge of the taskbar to the correct width.

Using this control panel applet, I can configure how these icons behave. But ... I can't actually delete the icon entries in this applet for apps I've uninstalled, etc. It's worse with some apps, for example: SpeedFan. This is a portable app, and I have it start with Windows. There are now *three* icon entries for it showing in this applet. I installed and later uninstalled Skype, yet it still persists in the Notification Area Icons app, with two instances, no less. (I used Revo Uninstaller to remove the app and registry entries, and I then cleaned the registry with Reg Organizer 5.0.)

In addition, I can see no rhyme or reason as to how the icons are listed in this applet. Every time I want to make a change to a program's icon, I must scroll through the entire list and find every instance. Why no way to sort, delete, etc.?

Or is there something I'm missing?

TIA!

How to remove particular program icons from the notification area? (it's not about hiding them)

I use the new taskbar (superbar) of Windows 7 primarily as an application launcher and window manager and it shows quite clearly which programs are running and which are not.
Now, in the notification area, some programs show a program icon when running, and some do not. The ones which do show an icon there used to not show a bar on the older Windows taskbar (either minimized or not), probably to save out space I guess. With the new taskbar using only icons to show, there is enough space for all programs running, and there is no use in saving out space by putting icons in the notification area. In fact, programs which put an icon in the notification area also still appear on the taskbar, because I pinned them to it. So now i have programs displaying two icons on my screen, which makes it quite bloated when running several programs at the same time.

I would like that only programs show an icon in the notification area which start on startup and run the whole time my computer is on, like Antivirus software, Firewall, Deamon Tools, printer software, stuff like that.
Programs I don't necessarily run all the time don't need to show an icon in the notification area, I just look at the new superbar to see if they are running or not, and can start them right from there if not.
Right now, there are quite some programs which show a notification area icon that seem unable to be removed / del... Read more

A:How to remove particular icons from notification aea?

Sometimes the options for an icon in the system tray are optional where you simply uncheck the box during the initial install. That's one way to cut down the ever growing number to start with. But users also have the other option to remove them entirely.

Quote:
Remove the icon. Your icon may provide relevant, useful status, but even so, users may not want to see it. Windows allows users to hide icons, but this feature isn't easily discoverable. To keep users in control, provide a Display icon in notification area option on the icon's context menu. Note that removing an icon doesn't have to affect the underlying program, feature, or process.

In registry editor go here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

Delete: "PasteIconsSteam" and "IconStreams" keys.

Close the registry editor and then go into task manager and kill the explorer.exe process.

Restart your computer, and hopefully the uninstalled programs should dissapear from your notification area!

Hope this helps.

My friend had an issue where he recently installed a program, and then went on to uninstall it. He cleaned out all the registry issues and leftover files.

However, in his notification tray (Win7 Professional), the app icon remains. Not in the actual notification tray, given that the app never does anything.

When he goes to the little arrow, and then hits "Customize", the app shows up. Is there any way to get rid of it manually?

He's already reinstalled/re-uninstalled the program. Didn't work.

Hello all,

I discovered that many of my portable programs were leaving multiple reporting instances in the notification tray. Two repeat offenders were GPU-Z and HDTune. It seems like every time I run these programs, they leave an obsolete notification in the tray. So, I started looking for a way to address this issue and the attached document provides the answer that works for me.

The document was originally intended to work on Windows 7 but I have used it successfully on Windows 8 Pro. Now, although this is not a permanent fix (eg, the icons will be back if I run those programs again), I can at least manage them on a periodic basis. IMPORTANT: If you decide to try this procedure, please use it in its entirety because if you just do the regedit part, the icons will come back on next boot so you must also start and stop windows explorer. When you start and stop windows explorer, ONLY the icons that were active at the time of the explorer restart will be regenerated.

And finally, please only attempt this procedure if you are absolutely comfortable with it - use at your own risk.

Good luck.

And I can't figure out how to remove the "show desktop" icon in the systems notification tray.

Thanks in advance for any help

A:Windows 7 Restricted User - Remove Right click on taskbar icons; Remove show desktop icon

Hello Megan,

Hope you're doing fine.

Disabling context menu from application on the taskbar
Please note the task bar context menu for any application for windows 7 is sub-divided into two sections :

   a. Jumplist(to access recently opened files)
   b. Creating a new instance of the application, Pin/Unpin, Close window

We can only disable the Jump List of the Taskbar context menu but not the "new instance creation, Pin/Unpin, close window"

Please follow the steps below to disable jump list:
1. Right-click on the Taskbar and then select Properties.
2. Click on the Start Menu tab and uncheck "Store and display recently opened items in the Start menu and the taskbar".
3. Click OK.

Disabling Show Desktop from the system tray
Regarding the requirement of disabling the "Show Desktop" button alltogether from the System tray, this is by design.

There are no ways to remove it. All we can do is to disable aero peek at Taskbar properties by right clicking and uncheck the option "Use Aero Peek to preview the desktop".
There's a third party software which addresses this sopecific purpose but I'm not pretty sure if this works perfectly for Windows 7 SP1 as well. Please refer to the link below.

The reason I want to resize or remove them is because I've got my taskbar set very small (as you can see in the picture) and the icons are too big to fit properly on the taskbar.

I've tried fooling around in the WindowMetrics registry key, but I couldn't find anything useful.

I pinned a folder named "Security" to my taskbar using the method on this page:

http://windows7center.com/tutorials/how-to-pin-any-item-to-the-taskbar-in-windows-7/
Specifically, I followed these instructions:

What we are going to do is pin a fake item to the taskbar and use it as scapegoat to change it to any function you’d like.

1) Pin any item to the taskbar.

Pinning folders as a separate item on the taskbar:

If you don’t like using jumplists, you can pin folders as an actual item. Navigate to the desired location and give the address bar a click. Copy the address that shows up. Skip to step 10.

Hold shift and right click the icon we pinned to the taskbar earlier, and choose Properties. Select the Shortcut tab, and paste the address into Target. Proceed to step 11.

Erase anything that is in the Start in box.

Click ok and you’re finished! The icon will not change unless you restart the explorer.exe process or log off then log back in.

The icon was on the taskbar but when I rebooted it was was gone. So I pinned the same folder again using a different method and when I tried to name that icon "Security" I got a msg saying there is already a link named "Security" so I assume the original one is still there, but I can't see it. Then when I rebooted, that second icon was also invisible.

So now how do I get rid of the darn things?

Thanks much,
Harold

Here is our dilemma. At the community college I work at, the librarians have requested that certain icons be pinned to the taskbar for all users. By default, Internet Explorer, File Explorer, and Store are pinned on the taskbar in Windows 8.1.

Well, they want none of those icons pinned to the taskbar, but they do want other icons pinned. I have tried a script to get rid of them on logon, but it deletes the icons so slowly that users can actually notice the icons disappearing on logon (it takes about 2 seconds per icon to delete). The librarians dislike this.

So, has anyone figured out the mechanism that creates these three icons? I would like to figure out a way to disable their creation in the first place, if possible. Already, Windows will allow additional icons to be added; it simply won't allow these three to be removed.

Dear TechSupportGuy,

I have searched through the forums and found only partially related situations, so I sure would appreciate any help with the following, particular, buggy XP home behaviour on my PC:

Every time I reboot, everything is otherwise fine, except, that the Volume, Network Connection, Safely Remove Hardware, and (notebook) Power icons are always turned off, or missing...

However, if I bring up Control Panel's Sounds and Audio Devices icon, and recheck the box that says "Place volume icon in the taskbar", suddenly, all 4 missing icons suddenly appear, in the Taskbar area, one at a time, and stay on, as otherwise normal.

But, as soon as I reboot, they all 4 disappear again, and the Sound/Volume checkbox above is made unchecked again, by itself, and the process can repeat itself as above.

If I goto Control Panel, Network Connections and try to turn on the Network Connection icon in the taskbar, though I check it, click Apply/OK, nothing happens.

What can I do to keep all four of these icons on in the Taskbar, even after rebooting? Is something wrong with my registry?

Thanks for any help,

David

This references: Quick Launch Bar: icons don't wrap even though there is room - a post by chillz which discovers a "bug" with the taskbar not resetting the row-sizing for toolbars when dragging the taskbar to the left then back to the bottom.

I, for a while now, have been using a custom quick-launch toolbar on my taskbar with the taskbar being 2 unit-lines in height and having the taskbar on my secondary ( left ) monitor. When I first set this up it showed 3 lines of small icons in the toolbar and up to 2 lines on the standard taskbar. This was perfect because the toolbar didn't reset the order every time I launched an application contrary to how the pinned application system works. With pinned applications, no matter what position I drop the icon, the order always resets and floats from place to place so that system of organizing icons is disgusting because you have apps between icons of apps that aren't running some times and other times the running applications are above and below with or without grouping enabled.

The vertical display would be the ideal way for me to view unlaunched applications ( see aforementioned topic ) because they group together and launched apps come after; in horizontal mode the taskbar is chaotic without a toolbar organizing the apps to one side but then you lose the functionality of the pinned-application system ( if you forfeit usage of that chaotic horizontal system in favor of how the vertical system works but in horizontal mod... Hello... Running Windows XP2 Home. For some unknown reason when I booted up PC today my taskbar notification area no longer hides inactive icons when not in use, as it has in the past. I checked the settings in taskbar properties and hide inactive icons was in fact selected. Tried unchecking and re-selecting this option, as well as re-booting PC, but the icons in this area all remain visible regardless of programs in use or non-use. I have run anti-virus, and spysweeper scan which both came up clean. Have also tried system restore which didn't change the situation. Does anyone have any suggestions how to remedy this?

When I boot my computer, the task bar notification area shows icons for CA Security Center, a local area connection, and sometimes Intel PROset/wireless but that is all. If I run "Task Bar Repair Tool Plus" and select "Show all listed Tray icons," the remaining icons are displayed until the next boot. Can anyone suggest a fix for this annoying problem?

My notifications in the taskbar has changed. The volume and network icons have disappeared. I've right clicked on the taskbar and gone to Properties. There I've gone to the Notification tab and found that the volume and network icon are greyed out. Tried unclicking on Hide Unused Icons and Customizing but the option is still greyed out. I've lock and unlocked the toolbar to no avail. Help and thanks in advance.

Recently I got infected with something which caused persistent pop-ups when I start iexplore.exe. It will usually crash or redirect me to another site. I fixed it using SmitFraud and Deckard, with also Malwarebytes. However now, although that problem is fixed, another came. Now everynow and then a window pops up and redirect to System Defender. Also when starting up, there are also red circles with crosses saying there is a need to download some antivirus package, and a exclaimation mark in a yellow triangle telling me to do basically the same thing. Hello again.

A niggle that's potentially quite a problem is that my 8.1 laptop Taskbar is not notifying me that "New Updates are Available."

I never set to install them automatically, I like to know what's going on and choose how to use my connection and processing power, but the notification from the Log In screen is easily missed and not satisfactory in my opinion. I think there's a third party piece of software to correct this, but I was wondering if there's a better way to restore the function?

Many thanks.

This is something that has been bugging me for a while now...

When I get a notification of new email (or other taskbar notification), it takes precedence over what I'm doing. So, if I'm typing something, I'm suddenly bumped out of the program when a new notification comes in (making the notification the active window).

How can I keep this from happening? I want to be notified when I get new mail or Adobe CC has an updates, etc., but don't wish it to take over from what I'm working on.

Hello,

After waking up, as per usual, I turn on my computer. Let it boot up, and login to my user (who is administrator). After walking away, I sit down, and notice I have no icons in my notification area on my task bar. I proceed to restart my computer, thinking maybe my computer is loading rather slow - I was wrong.

I then began searching for help through Google and I found others with the same issue - most of which had been resolved. I decided to try each of these solutions, unfortunately, none of them seemed to work in any way. (If you're wondering, I tried Reset_Notifications_Icons_List.reg, Notification clear [program] and manually removing the 'explorer.exe' process and adding it again through the Task Manager).

Also, my pinned taskbar programs seem to be a lot large than they previously were. Which I'm not happy about.

Images below show changes in my task bar;

Before:

Now:

As you can tell in the picture now, I am also no longer able to change settings.

If anyone could give me a solution to this issue; much would be appreciated.

Thank-you in advance.

My "Notification" area has icons I would like to remove.
"Customize Notifications" window, does not remove them and some settings in that window are just ignored when set to "Always Hide".
I believe this part of the TaskBar slows boot too and clogs memory.
I would like to get rid of...
"Windows Security alerts" (my "CA Security Suite" works well),
"CA Security Centre" (already have a Desktop shortcut)
"Realteck HD Audio manager" (have never used it)

PLUS ...
In "Customize Notifications Window" there are 5 "Past Items" that are meaningless to me.
1. Name has 5 new messages (...has folder icon)
2. 100% (...yes that is its caption, has "Windows Security alert" icon)
3. 2:28 hours (95%) remaining (...with folder icon, values never change)
4. Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerater Driver for Mobile (...never used)
5. Windows Task manager (...I never use + is accessible via Taskbar shortcut menu anyway.

So I have a problem...

I am currently running a SONY VAIO VPCCW21FX with an NVIDIA 310M graphics card installed. Recently, a black box has appeared in the right side of the taskbar, starting from just left of the change language dialog and going all the way right. When ending the explorer.exe process, the box remain, and when highlighting it, the loading cursor appears. I've attached some screenshots to give a better visual. Any ideas and/or known causes/fixes to this issue? It does not seem to affect performance at all, but it worries me that a more serious unseen issue may exist as well.

Thanks!

Edit: it should be noted that clicking the box turns it white, and after a few more clicks it goes away. Also, I apologize if this was posted in the wrong forum... I am still unsure as to if this is a hardware issue with my graphics card or a software issue.

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I use MailwasherPro to deal with spam. The default behavior for it is "Only show notifications" and when I change that to "Show icon and notifications" that change is not permanent. It will eventually change back to the default behavior, usually after a reboot. Ideas?

A:Change to taskbar notification is not permanent

The icon will show when in use for a bit. Meaning it will only show for a bit then go away. Unless you put it and have it set to always show icon.

Plus make sure you set it correct in the program as well as the default notification system in win7

Windows XP Pro with newly installed SP3. After installing SP3 the volume icon disappears every time I boot up. I have to go to Control Panel>Sounds & Audio Devices>turn off 'place volume icon in the task bar'. Then go back and turn it on. The icon appears, but when I turn the computer off and boot up it is gone again, and put on the 'Past Items' list.
In the task bar properties> Customise Notification> 'volume' is set to 'always on'. The 'lock the toolbar' is then turned on. I click 'Apply' then 'OK'.
How do I make the volume icon stay in the notification bar permanently? Is there a way to set it in the registry?

I noticed the same problem. I think the solution is to make the shortcut read only before you pin it to the task bar. I did this a few days ago and they seem to be keeping my new icon.
If you later want to unpin the shortcut from the taskbar you will need to remove the readonly check from the taskbar shortcut properties. Although it will unpin without doing this you will be left with the shortcut in the real folder and have to go there to physically delete it.

My problem is specific to the unpinned icons in Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit. The pinned applications stay put just fine. This problem started a couple of days ago.

It seems that, when I have multiple unpinned applications open, sometimes the icons of the unpinned applications move around at random times (it seems that the last active unpinned application moves to the right even though it wasn't the program opened last). And sometimes, when I have only one unpinned application on the taskbar, its icon seems to move from some slot to its right back in its position.

For some reason I suspect some malware or virus may be the cause.

I tried uninstalling ATI Radeon HD6450 drivers and reverting to an older version, as well as uninstalling every program that was installed since the day the problem started, to no avail. I found four malware in the meantime but even removing said malware did not solve my problem.

A:Unpinned taskbar icons moving around the taskbar

I don't think it's malware. If it's any consolation, my machine at work does this occasionally, and it's clean. I don't know what's causing it, but I've just chalked it up to being a quirk in Windows.

Scenario; I use auto hide for the taskbar. I am using program 'x' in full screen when program 'y' sends a notification in the background - one I do not need to see or know about incidentally.
This causes the taskbar to pop up, and stay up, in my way until I click on it. It covers crucial parts of the program I'm using in full screen until I dismiss it. With a program like say Skype or Discord as program 'y', this is happening every few seconds, every time someone sends a message. It is maddening.
I need a way to totally disable the taskbar popping up every time anything happens in any other program that is running. Any ideas? Thanks!

This is my first strange problem I encountered since signing up on this board. I will post screencaps tomorrow. I have been told to look to underneath my battery's compartment to find the COA. Nothing else unusual, except that I was prompted to hit F1 and also my clock reset itself in Windows. What I see here now in the notifications area in the taskbar, is a blank space which appears to be an invisible icon to the left of the date/time. I can tell because the area is able to be highlighted as if it were a normal, visible notification icon, but the notification icon itself is invisible. Also, when I click the "show hidden icons" arrow, there appears to be big white space full of invisible icons too. As I mouse over them, the 'icons' seem to disappear and the area of icons become normal again.

Hi all!

Is it possible somehow to modify the vertical spacing
of the icons in the notification area (systray) ?

I set my taskbar height bigger than the default,
so my icons are placed into more rows:

If I place the taskbar to the left or right side of the screen,
the icon spacing is somehow became normal.
(But I don't want to use it placed like this)

So what this depends on?
Is it a thing that can be modified by editing msstyles,
or is there a registry key for this? Or something?

I've customized the Taskbar Notification Area innumerable times. The problem is I'll set certain icons to "Show icon and notifications", but a short time later they've reverted to "Only show notifications". Is there a way to get the customization to remain as I've set it, despite reboots, program launches and closings, etc.?

A:Taskbar notification customization doesn't stick

Shot in the dark here, but have you ran a sfc/scannow? It will check system files for any corruption and possibly repair them, just click on the link for a tutorial on how to do this. SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Taskbar Notification Tray - "RollerStoller NORAD" operations[Control Panel --> Notifications --> Show Icons and Notifications]  Almost any program or utility that can place an icon into this tray, I welcome and allow same to do so.  I want any/all such icons to be visible at all times, from boot to shutdown.  Reasons:  I want my "RollerStoller NORAD" to inform me, directly or indirectly, of anything becoming amiss or already amiss.  When any particular icon or icons "go missing" a few times, I begin to check out the Windows innards and attempt to find out the cause[s], and apply appropriate solution[s].  Also newly-installed, welcomed, things appear -- letting me know such are ready for action.  Having between 21-27 icons in that try can sometimes lead to icon-lathergy on my part, however, I try to eye-ball the group daily, and hopefully become alert to any missing-in-action icon[s] -- 'cause sometimes that means a particular program or utility is not working completely.  This "NORAD" has come in handy numerous times, alerting me of this, that, the other.

Do you have a question? Are you saying that this app keeps disappearing from the task bar and you are trying to figure out how to make it stay?

I recently got spyware quake and the .tmp BHO. I went ahead and used smit remover and ran Ewido and got rid of everything. I also used Spysweeper and scanned rootkits and stuff. I can't find anything in the log but the annoying "your computer is still infected" icon in the taskbar is still there. It shows a red "non smoking" sign and a green wheel chair.

Funkyecat, Go to the link below and under the letter "N" scroll down to "Notification Area - Icons Disappearing" where you'll find possible solutions.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

Edited to add: You may also want to try the "Restore to XP Default * (clickable)" vbs file at the link below.

To use the VBS Files: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double
click the vbs file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

NOTE: If your anti-virus software warns you of a "malicious" script, this is normal if you have "Script Safe" or similar technology enabled. These scripts are not malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry.

I installed "Core Temp" and then uninstalled using CP. I noticed I still had "core temp" listed in the notification area icons screen. Searched the registry for "core temp", nothing found. Ran CCleaner, no help. The notification area icons screen shows...

"Core temp.exe"
"Core 7: 58*C to Tjmax"

I have done several manual searches of the registry and can't find anything. Anyone have any ideas on how to eliminate this?

Could you possibly describe how it looks bad? Are you talking about the sound icon to the left, or the Show Desktop button to the right of the clock? What exactly do you want fixed?

I am running XP Service Pack 3 home addition.
In the bottom right toolbar (next to the clock) I have 4 icons (always show)and several hidden icons (always hide).

Every few weeks, and for no reason, the customised notification against certain icons just changes from " always show" to "always hide" or " hide when inactive"

I keep changing it back to "always shown" but after a day or three it changes again

( not always the same icon and not always the same time length before it goes back/wrong)

Any suggestions please

Updating my printer, Hewlett Packard kindly plonked a "HP Support Assistant" icon in my notifications area, to the left
of my "Hidden Icons" up arrow. This is not shown my Control Panel for Notifications. It will not move if I try and drag it - it simply starts to open!

How do I get rid of that unwelcome visitor? (preferably not by messing in my registry?)

Is there a way to hide/remove an application icon in the notification area to mask the fact that an app is running? I don't mean the usual option to not show the icon, which is still visible if you click on the "show hidden icons" button. And while we're at it is it possible to prevent a running process from displaying in the task manager? I'm thinking about anti-theft applications like Lojack.

A:Notification Icons - can they be hidden?

Preventing a running process from displaying in Task Manager....sure...that is called a rootkit.

Hiya!

Recently, i attempted to customize my notification bar with some nicer icons. I replaced the icons for the sound, network, battery and action center. For about a day, the action center had different graphics, but the rest stayed the same, and now all of them have disappeared!

Im running win7HomePremium x64

the .dll s in question are C:\Windows\system32
ActionCenter.dll
SndVolSSO.dll
batmeter.dll
puidui.dll

If someone ould help me get them back, even with the standard icons, that would be great

I am having problems with the notification Icons. I pull the ones I want out of the overflow box onto the right hand end of the task bar but the next time I start my Laptop they are back inside the overflow box. I have tried opening the overflow box and clicking on "Customise" and setting the required Icons to "Show icon and notifications" but when I start up the are missing again.
