Can't save files that are downloaded through browsers

Q: Can't save files that are downloaded through browsers

This is happening to a friend
OS: Win7 home premium x32

He sent in his laptop to be fixed(dead screen) and when he got it back, he cant save files that he downloads no matter the extension( .msi, .txt, .rar, .exe, .jpg, .zip). It worked fine before.

When he downloads something through any browser( IE, Firefox, chrome) the download will start for 1sec and then stop as if its done. the default download location is desktop and no incomplete files or anything is made.

He can browse sites, watch YouTube, or anything else fine. Speedtest and pingtest results are normal. I can upload files directly to him through Skype and he can download that without issue.

Things I have had him try

.clean boot (no anti virus or anything else running)
.safe mode
.reset IE to default
.made a new windows admin account
.changed broswer default download locations
.no router to configure
.system restore to before he got it back
.ran chkdsk (no errors)
.made sure windows updated
.disabled windows firewall and defender
.scanned PC with malwarebytes
.cleared all browser cache and history
.no content restrictions
.no proxy
.ran the cmd "sfc /scannow" (results were fine)

Any other possible things to try would be greatly appreciated.

A: Can't save files that are downloaded through browsers

SO IE, firefox and chrome all have download problems? So it's not a browser specific problem. Actually they can download because you see movies and pictures in your browser.

Can you save files in another folder?
Can you create files on desktop (for example save an excel file)?

First I apologize if this is the wrong forum for this question. I currently have Adobe Acrobat XI Pro installed on my computer. I'm wondering what would I have to do in Windows in order to have the option to save files I download from email attachments or other ways as PDF instead of having to later on go back and save them as PDF.

Thank you

I have Windows XP. When I download a file (WP, pdf, etc.), and it asks me to open or save it, it will only let me save it. If I try to open it, it seems to download, but then the relevant application never opens, and I get a message that I may not have the appropriate permission. So I have to save it, then open the application myself, then open the saved file. Any ideas on what the problem is? Thanks for any assistance!!

Greetings, recently when I download files in IE10 using the "save as" option to save to a specific location, the ".partial" file will show up at that location but it will have 0 KB size, no matter how far along the download as determined in the "View downloads" window.

I believe the downloading file is being buffered in

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5

because I can find the file being downloaded within a specific folder given a random, 8-digit, alpha-numeric name, and that file is the correct size for how far along the download is.

I would like to reset things so that the downloaded file is buffered in the actual location where the file is being saved and not in Temporary Internet Files since I have Windows on a small partition and cannot afford unnecessary usage of space if it can be avoided.

Thanks for reading this and for any help you might have.

A:Files downloaded in IE10 save in one place but buffer in another

Hi and welcome to Sevenforums,
I wouldn't directly save items to another partition as your doing,
Just use the default downloads folder to begin with,
After the file is scanned.... by windows.. then you can move it where you want to,
The downloads folder can be cleaned using built in windows tools such as Disk cleanup and or clearing your browser history with the downloads folder checked,

Large files are usually the ones you have issues with I'm guessing

had this problem for awhile now, no matter what browser i was using...(firefox, chrome, internet explorer)... it crashed or froze up or hanged when trying to save a file.... A month ago a friend told me to remove quicktime, i-tunes, and all the other apple components.. (apple software update, icloud, bonjour, etc) and then reboot the computer... and since then ive never had this problem again -- no crashes, and no freeze ups since i removed all apple products

so do you think Apple software is causing browsers to malfunction? thats what it looked like to me, if you have this problem, uinstall apple and see if that fixes it

According to my download history (which I have cleared following other attempted solutions) my last download was 7 days ago. Since then, I have been unable to download files without using a non-browser download manager (I went through a complicated process of transferring a download manager from a USB to see if that fixed the problem - it did insofar as that the download manager works as a replacement for the browser's downloading options). I mainly use Chrome (latest version) but the problem has persisted as I attempted on both Firefox and Internet Explorer (also latest versions). I first noticed this when attempting to use "right-click -> save image as" on a forum which has always and still does allow users to save images. I later found that this inability extends to any file I click to download. Clicking on a file or on "save as" causes nothing to happen, whether I have a download folder set or not, and persists even when changing my download folder, reinstalling Chrome, and clearing my download history, cache, and cookies, as the most common fixes suggest. This issue is also true for clicking on any sort of "Browse..." or "Choose file..." button for uploads, such as when attaching a file to an email or a forum post. The window to select a file simply does not appear, however, I am able to drag-and-drop a file for uploading. These buttons and the process of downloading worked fine when restarting in safe mode, which has me theoriz... Read more

A:How to save photos that I downloaded

I don't have an external HD or use any backup or cloud service.

You should consider purchasing an external HD [relatively inexpensive] or a USB Flash Thumb Drive [inexpensive] to copy/paste your files to. You mention 1000's of pics so if you buy a thumb drive be sure it's of adequate size. Test it first. Everyone should have one or the other. Having both is even better.

Alternatively, you could perhaps, depending on your experience & comfort level, create a new partition on your hard drive that you could copy your files to. That partition would remain untouched when you reinstall windows. A popular tool for partitioning is Easeus. It's freeware, user friendly & you can get it from here: http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm  Last, you could start burning your pics to DVD, but it would require several Discs at the least.

I'm not sure where this question should actually belong, but I just put it here.

Anyways, like the title says, is it better to immediately run a .exe file or save it? Most directions online say to save it and then run it. But saving it takes space (I know just a little) and more time.

Which one's better? Why?

When a webpage is downloaded, the URL is not saved. Is there any way to have the URL/path downloaded with a page, perhaps as metadata?

I searched for browser extensions and asked if there were any, but it seems that there are none. Someone said that there's no standardised metadata for such files.

Does anyone here know of a solution? Thanks.

Hi, I have over time downloaded quite a bit of nice software. However, my Laptops harddrive is smal and I have now an external harddrive via USB setup. How do I make sure the software is transferred to the E: drive with all its files. Whenever I do a 'copy and paste' I find it is not working. I reformatted my smal harddrive and when reversing the software installation from the E drive to the C drive it does not work. What do I wrong or how should it be done. Any advise is appriciated.

I went into the event viewer, I can see when the lid is opened aka the computer is turned on and off; is their a log of what apps were used by day or what apps have been downloaded. i can not go to the download folder because if something was downloaded the person would have deleted it out of there because he is smarter than to leave evidence. i am essentially looking for two things, what was done on my computer on 3 specific days and if a keylogger was downloaded our something else that records my activities on these 3 specific days. i am to the point where i Will probably restore my computer because i am being there is something on there, but i am looking for proof to call the person out. he is either deleting his web history when using my laptop our using a Mozilla private screen.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

When I visit some malicious links with chrome running in SBIE, I find that some downloaded malware samples will not incur any alert from EIS.
This is not incurred by a false-negative detection, since when I manually scan the sandbox folder with EIS, the malware samples can be detected and removed.
I do not think that Emsisoft has a policy that automatically add any process running in SBIE to the white-list of real-time/on-access scanning, since there also exist some malware samples downloaded in SBIE can actually be detected in the real time.
I should say that this problem makes me worry about the monitoring capability of EIS.

I have a number of files I would like to try and save off of the disk, and/or I would like to know if there is any saving the hard drive for future use. I record music and use adobe programs for freelance artwork. Also there are a number of pictures I'd love to recover (though as far as I know they're backed up on google drive). The .wavs of some recordings were recent and were not backed up in time before the disk crashed.

I apologize, this is lenghty but i'll throw it all out there.

As best as I can remember this is the sequence of events:
My daughter was born three weeks ago, my wife decided to pop in a usb thumbdrive to save baby pictures to my pc (Dell Optiplex755 refurbished, Win7 32 bit, Intel dual core processors, Seagate 7200.12 Barracuda 1TB hardrive).

A few pictures, unknown to me at the time, were corrupted wither on the flashdrive or the camera's memory card.

After she moved the pictures to the computer it froze, and she restarted.

Windows Desktop Manager crashed, and CPU in task manager was at 100% always.

I ran an error check, and four files were found to be corrupt and fixed (3 photos, 1 reaper file, and 1 system 32 file. (I'm an idiot and I didn't write down the system 32 file.)

After error check, I noticed a yellow exclamation next to optiplex in devices, and I was notified that the driver for my intel processors was not compatible suddenly with windows. I tried to download new optiplex drivers but chrome and internet explorer would fr... Read more

It almost sounds like you got some malware from that USB stick.

If you have a friend with a Linux computer, or have access to one, you can often hook up a non booting drive and recover files that way. I don't know the exact procedure but something like this may help, too:

The computer involved is using Windows 7 Pro 64bit and Office Professional Plus 2010.

I am having a problem I cannot find a solution to. I have one user at a clients location that has recently stopped being able to save excel files in their my documents. The my docs is being redirected to a server. The files open correctly and can be edited, but when save is clicked an error box says the document not saved. Using cntrl-shift-i I found the error code to be 100490. I can open any other file and save them just fine. And any new excel documents can be opened and saved correctly. The file can be saved into the same folder using save as is and the document is renamed. However, the user cannot erase the old file.

Doing some digging I made sure the trust zone was enable for the network path and trusted locations on a network were allowed. They had already been configured.

I checked for the windows update that microsoft reported could fix this problem and it was not installed. I went ahead and tried the hotfix, but it would not run because of the missing update.

I tried changing permissions and ownership. This where it gets strange the user has full control enabled on the folder. On any other folder or file I can right click and view the security tab. However, on the excel files when I click the security tab a red line is displayed that says "This file is currently not available for use on this computer." If I try to make a security change on a whole folder any excel fil... Read more

I have a problem with saving files from my browser on Windows 7 (64). This affects any browser i try, including IE 8 (32), Google Chrome and Firefox.

When saving a file, the 'Save as...' dialogue box comes up and a few seconds after this the browser freezes, usually accompanied by an error (Internet Explorer has stopped working and needs to close - similar thing for Firefox and Chrome).

Oddly this doens't seem to effect IE8 64-bit - this browser works ok.

I've googled this but can't seem to find anything specific - it all seems to point towards browser plugins etc, which in my case doesn't sound logical, as it's affecting any broswer i try reglardless of plugins.

Can anyone help with this as it's becomeing increasingly frustrating!

Hi alexondrums,

Do you mind trying to boot into 'Safemode with netoworking'?(Press F8 during startup)

This is just to rule out any third party or application causing this. If you could also export your System+Application log (Start > Search > type "eventvwr.msc" > hit ENTER) so that we can have a look through them, that would be great.

Also press the "More information" button (if available when it crashes) and post the dumplog, either directly to the post or in an attached .txt file.

Referred from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic413843.html ~ OBHi everyone!I originally posted in the Vista forum but was recommended to post here. here's what I've said so far: When trying to save a file in word, as soon as the box opens up showing the navigation folder, word crashes with the "Microsoft Office Word has stopped working". In Firefox, when I click a picture and try to save, it does not crash when the folder navigation pops up -- but if I try to change the folder, thats when it will crash. Also, sometimes, when attaching files, like in gmail or this forum, it will crash as well.I feel I should note, I recently had the google redirect virus three times...I guess it never fully cleared. In my attempts to clear this I made quite a few changes and this last time I ran combofix. I should note, though, that this problem was prior to running combofix.I have been working on this for a week straight to no avail. I have tried so many things I'm not sure I can remember them all, but here are some. I used the Microsoft Fix-it Solution Center and ran "Diagnose and repair Windows File and Folder Problems automatically" and "Fix Windows system performance problems on slow Windows computers". No fix.I ran windows startup recovery. I do not have the Vista discs as they never came w/ my computer and when the BBY Geeksquad "optimized" my computer they messed up the gateway built-in recovery. Received a few MS Excel files from an outside vendor as e-mail attachment. I am able to save the attachement to My Doc or desktop and then open or open them directly from Outlook 2003 or 2007.

But when I tried to save the doc with or without making changes, the spreadsheet just sits there and saying Saving at the bottom. I waited several miniutes to be saved, but it just sits there. It does not taking any extra resources. On Application event viewer, it just displayes application hang error.

I know I've done this before. I get on a free wav download site, find a wav file and can't save it.

I've tried playing it in a new window and trying the "file" and "save as" feature, but it is always greyed out and can't be used. Same with right clicking. It greys out the option to "save target". Do I need to change something in my Internet Options or am I just losing it?

Help! and Thanks in advance.

I recently reformatted my WinXP hard drive. When I try to download various file types (using right click, save as), Firefox is renaming the filename in the "Save As" dialogue to a different extension. This doesn't happen for all file types. .wmv retain their name. mp3 files, though, will be renamed to "filename.mp3.mp2". A similar thing is happening to mpgs. All mpg files are being renamed to "filename.mpg.mpa".

This is happening on all webpages, so it isn't just a single site causing this. I originally posted this question on the official Firefox help forum, but I didn't get any solution there. Then, I decided to try this in another browser. In Internet Explorer, the SAME THING is happening ! Weird ! But, in Opera 8.02, it IS NOT happening (i.e. it works like normal in Opera).

Is this some sort of spyware? I run AdAware, Spybot, and Microsoft Antispyware daily. I also have Symantec Antivirus (run-time protection).

Anyone else ever experience this before? Thanks

A:Browsers Renaming File Extension (right click/save as)

I would uninstall Firefox and download the latest version of it, 1.0.6 I think. Then install it. It may fix the problem with a fresh install of it.

Hello, Please help me. I have Windows 2000 Professional. I'm pretty new to all this as I have only had a computer for about a week. I got some adware threats detected by Norton Antivirus 2004 and have done a lot of reading up and I am now tring to delete them.

One of the removal instructions provided by Norton promps me to delete a file in C:\Winnt\Downloaded Program Files but when I go to view this folder it looks like there are no files inside. Now, I know there are files in there as Norton Antivirus has picked up one in there and when I view the proporties for that folder it states there are 12 files inside but when I view the folder with Windows Explorer it appears empty!

I've gone into folder option and changed the settings so it shows hidden files and hidden system files yet this still doesn't let me view the files in this folder. How can I delete this file if I am unable to view it?

If anyone can point me to a turorial that explains this or explain it to me I would really appreciate this.

Please help a n00b.

Cheers, Luke.

A:Unable to view files in C:\Winnt\Downloaded Program Files

I'm assuming you have done this to Show hidden files and folders:
Go to Control Panel/Folder Options/View and select "Show hidden files and folders"

Also, place a check in "Display the contents of system folders"
And,uncheck "Hide protected operating system files(Recommended)"

If the above doesn't work try this:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced.
Create the REG_DWORD ShowSuperHidden (if it doesn't already exist) Set the value to 1, click OK, and close the Registry editor

Until today my computer, running Windows XP Home Edition, had two user accounts; one for my mother (titled "Nancy Loury") and one for me (titled "Kev"). However I found myself simply using my mothers more often and saw having two accounts when both of us really only use one as redundant. So I decided to delete the Kev user account. The account had all of my very important files in it under My Documents. When I went to delete the account, it of course asked me if I wanted to save the contents of the My Documents folder for the Kev account under a folder labeled "Kev" on the Nancy Loury user's desktop. I of course did want to save them, so I clicked "Save Files", the account was deleted, and on the desktop is the file labeled "Kev" which, according to the system, should hold all the contents of the My Documents from the Kev account. I clicked on the folder and to my horror I found that it was completely empty; the system had not saved a single one of the files in My Documents like I had asked it too and like it said it would do. Nothing is there.

I've no idea why this happened, all I know is I'm extremely upset about this. What do I do to recover the files from the now deleted My Documents?

Not sure what happened. The Visio files were opening just fine a few minutes ago, and now when I try to open them, IE prompts me continuously for "Open, Save, Save as." I tried all three options for the fun of it and IE still prompts every time.
Tried opening them from a remote PC and they open just fine. Can't do anything with them on my PC except view them in Visio itself.
I've tried resetting IE settings. Uninstalling IE 11 and going down to 10. Nothing in event viewer for IE.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I have OS XP(3), IE8, Office 2010

I am trying to d/l a pptx file from our organizational website (that I use regularly). The file is shown as a pptx file (as displayed by the properties feature), but when I click to d/l it, it shows up as a zip file to be opened and the computer tries to unzip it, but doesn't do a very good job in doing so.

I have tried to d/l other pptx files from other internet sites and they work (d/l) OK.

I have the same OS on another laptop and it d/ls this particular file from this particular site just fine.

I can change (rename) the extension on this file (from zip to pptx) and it works fine

I have tried everything reccomended on various PPT forums and it hasn't worked.

The file association is Microsoft PowerPoint.

The file d/ls perfectly with Firefox.

What is it about the configuration of XP/IE8 that lets this happen?

The issue here is that this particular file has been posted to the website for members of our organization to d/l and use. Many of these members are not savvy enough to be able to 'manipulate' the file and use it as it was designed. I am tryng to make this d/l as user friendly as is possible.

Hello, I have an HP laptop running Vista Home Premium 64-bit. It's actually been relatively fine for me until the last few days. I was having some problems editing video files and couldn't figure out why, so I updated to service pack 2. Around the same time, although I honestly cannot be sure that it was because of the update, none of my downloads will work. I believe it happened once or twice before I updated my sp but now I can't download ANYTHING. It's bizarre. The entire file will download and the file will show download progress just like normal. But, once complete the file shows up as 0 kb and doesn't open. I've tried using firefox 3.5.3 and IE 8...both do the same thing. I have also checked my permissions and made sure that I am allowed access to all of the folders that the documents are saved in. Nothing seems to help.

I really don't want to have to format/reinstall windows since I have quite a bit of stuff I would need to backup. Any help would be EXTREMELY appreciated. Thanks.

I just downgraded from Vista SP2 to Vista SP1 and by doing so, have somehow screwed up my downloads in both Firefox and IE8. Whenever I download in either one, the download results in a file that is 0 kb.

The strange thing is, Google Chrome somehow wasn't affected by this downgrade (if that's what caused this) and I can download files fine in that browser.

Can someone tell me what's going on here and how to fix this in IE8 and FF 3.5? I've already tried reinstalling FF and it didn't help at all.

I just did a clean install of Win 8 Release Preview, 64 bit. I moved my profile from C: (SSD) to d: (HDD) using a recommendation I found in the forum. I did not move the program data. I wanted to download and install some programs, but when I do, I can't get them to run. They are setup .exe programs. In IE if I click to open, nothing happens. I clicked on View Downloads in IE and it opens a Window with the downloads and if I try to open one a list is shown that asks how do you want to open this file and a list of programs like IE, Notepad, Paint, etc.

I've pre-ordered Win 8 to install when it is shipped.

Does this problem only occur in Internet Explorer, or do you have another browser that works correctly?

Have you tried doing a System Restore to fix the problem?

If you can, post a HijackThis scanlog:

Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

Recently - I've been having a strange problem. when I download a photo or image, or even capture a screen shot and save it to a folder, I cannot see it in that folder. I originally thought i had not hit save properly or not saved a file that I thought I had - but when i tried to re download an image or capture it again and name it the same thing - I got a message saying there was already a file by that name in the folder.

I have tried ensuring all hidden files are shown, and refreshed the window to no avail. but when i restart the computer, I am able to see the files in the folder as the should have been displayed all along. also confusing - when i look in the folder after saving...say if I've saved 12 images into the folder from the net or screen capture, but the folder is only displaying 1 image - it was say the folder only contains one image...

how can i fix this so i do not need to reboot every time i want to see newly created images?

I have a Downloaded Program File entry, that has "unknown status", no creation date, and it says "none" under Last Accessed.

It does claim to be 4kb's in size.

This program file has no name, but instead, is a grouping of numbers and letters, all enclosed in parenthese..{}.

Highlighting it, and right clicking it only brings up the properties of the entry.

It cannot be deleted either from the keyboard, or from the menu...File>delete..Edit>cut.

The properties of this entry show it to be an Active X control, (with no creation date, no access date and no status. It does not appear to be damaged...it does not say that there are any damaged files associated with it).

I dont feel comfortable giving you the codebase http address, because Im not sure if it turns into a link that anyone can access. But I will tell you that it includes the words; fpdownload, macromedia, polarbear, ultrashim.cab

Using my search bar to go to that location brings me to a folder, with an apparent program that has yet to be installed.

There are 3 icons in this cab folder...a .dll icon, a configuration/notepad icon with the name "erma", and the remaining icon is an INSTALL icon.

Clicking on any of these icons brings up a command to "extract", or copy.

The file is in a hidden Temporary Internet File, looking for it would be like looking for a needle in a hay stack. You can go to Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View put a check box in Show Hidden Files and Folders, and uncheck Hide extensions for known programs. Then do a Search for *.MKV files making sure you search for Hidden Files.

When I click on either of the first two options, however, the box simply clicks and unclicks with no actions following it. Almost as if you click "Post" in a forum, but you hold the click on it and move the cursor elsewhere, stopping the system from performing that action. Is there a way to do this ?

I work ( well actually volunteer )  in a school with 60 plus fully updated windows
7 machines - all have IE9 and Word Starter. Recently, we made the move to Active
Directory. Word Started worked for about a month after and then the system admins made
a change to the OU with the outcome being that WS now fails to function. Their
answer to this is that WS is not really an enterprise level product and should
not have been working at all and to remove it completely. I hesitate to do this
since I cannot reinstall it as it is an OEM product. I have moved everyone over
to Open Office ( this was installed as a backup on the image ) to fix that
emergency. Now, when teachers go to web sites that serve up .doc files, upon
download with IE9 ( ironically this does not happen in FireFox ), the file extension
actually changes to a .wiz file. Luckily, Open Office will open these but, I
have to reset the default program to open this file type every few reboots. I?m
needing to know what settings in AD might have been change or need to be
changed back to restore Word Starter functionality.
Thanks for any help.

A:IE9 changing all downloaded .doc files to .wiz

Hi,

I suggest to go to
tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab, click "Reset advanced settings" for
test.
Also try to change another download location for test. And in Windows Explorer, do not show the extensions for files.
If the issue persists, you can try to reinstall IE9, or temporary return to IE8 to check if the same issue occurs.
Hope that helps.

I downloaded a file and when I tried to install it, it said it was unable to download because files may be corrupted.

Since it was never installed on the computer, does it mean that I don't have the file anymore?

And if it is still on the computer, how do I find it and how do I get rid of it?

A:What happens to downloaded files that are not installed?

A file downloaded stays on the computer until you delete it. How do you find it? Look in the folder you downloaded it to. Depending on where or why the install failed, it may have left files in various places on your computer. Trying to find them to delete them could be very cumbersome and not always necessary.

Hi,

I have an interesting and recent problem. If I download a file with windows explorer, its file extension is automatically converted to .exe, even if it is a jpeg, zip, or any other file. I have no idea why this happens but it is a huge problem, because I have to rename every file extension manually.

Any ideas?

Thanks.....

Hi, and thanks in advance for your help.

First, please note that this download problem does not seem to be browser-related. It happened both in Firefox and IE.

When I receive an attachment in an email and click to download it on FF, a FF download window opens up and I see the "progress" of the download happening. This is all normal. But when I click to open in (or try to right click to open off a menu) --- nothing happens. If I click save instead of open --- nothing saved where I've sent it.

Same as above if I click to download a PDF or exe file from a website. (With one strange exception: if I click on a link that instead of opening a pdf file directly, opens a new tab which then, with no further action from me, somehow "opens" a pdf, either in the tab, OR as a stand alone pdf --- appearing in the tray of open programs under the Adobe icon at the bottom of my screen --- which I then can save!)

On IE, the only difference is that once the dialogue box appears asking whether I'd like to save or open, and i click on one or the other, the dialogue box closes, but nothing has been opened or saved.

I run AVG anti-virus (free version), which is up to date, and reports no problems. I run a scan using their PC Analyser, which found some registry errors ---- which i could fix using their PC Tune-up..... except I can't open the download of its exe file!

I also run Zone Alarm's free fire wall product. I have run both these prote... Read more

I have a problem with IE6.

When I click a file to download, I am prompted with a box asking me if I want to save or open the file. If I click save, the file saves properly and I can then open it. However if I click open, the file does not seem to be created. If it is a .txt file for example, notepad opens up and says that it cannot find the file (the path is something like Temporary Internet
Files/content.ie5/something). The issue does not occur with IE7.

Any ideas ?

Thank you.

A few days ago I started having problems with all the .exe files I download, from game patches, to AVG 9.exe at that point I also uninstalled AVG 8 to replace it with AVG 9 only find the same problem with my Men of War patch came up with the AVG 9.exe, and that is a window that pops up saying ''Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access them'' Now I'm left with an outdated game, no anti virus, and I haven't a clue what to do as I'm on the Admin account and the path in the ''cmd line'' section is what leads to the exe, so I don't see whats wrong. Im downloading files to my desktop, but the only way i can access them is going to open containing folder option from the download box (firefox), which just takes me to the desktop folder. if i navigate to the desktop folder manually, they cant be found. nor do they come up in a search. this just started happening hours ago, so unless something out of my control made these files hidden all of the sudden, im not sure what is going on. i have downloaded different file types from different websites, so its not just a problem from one site or file type. any help would be appreciated.

A:files downloaded to desktop cant be seen, but are there

Interesting problem. I should think if you downloaded files to the desktop, and used Windows Explorer to view the desktop, then you should see the files. Why not create a folder in your Libraries called "Downloads" and configure Firefox to download files to that folder (Firefox options, options, general tab). See what happens then. Curious.

Welcome to TSG myodie. I'm going to put your topic in the Business Applications forum since it evidently involves Word.

But do let us know what the file extension is on the files you are trying to download (you can also try right clicking on the link and selecting "save target as" to specify a download directory if possible). Try to supply a link to the files you are having problems with so others can check them out.

I tried to get to the new thread under dvd burning but couldnt find "new thread" - This is my 1st time here so please forgive me. How does one get a downloaded file into dvdshrink so it can be processed for burning? I have dvdsanta but trying to get the best use out of dvdshrink and dvddecrypter also. Thanks and thanks for your understanding.

A:downloaded files and dvdshrink

ok new thread is usaully under the thread chart .it's a gray button .

well first of alll u need to turn the downloaded file in dvd form. For movies, avi is only one single file. i use winavi.to turn avi movies into dvd form. after u've turned the avi movie into dvd form.go to dvd shrink, but i doubt the file will be over 4.7 gb. so this is mostly done with dvd movies.that are over 4.7 gb in size so that u are able to fit it on a dvd blank disk.

for dvd shrink to work u must open dvdshrink then press open files on the top menu . then select files then once that opens u press analysis. then after that's done edit what u want i usually get rid of the french language waste of space. then press back up and then whaa laaa . once that's done burn the files onto a disk using nero or any other burning program .

dvd decrypter works similar u open the movie in a drive then decrtypt it. then if the movie is still way to big then use dvd shrink
i usually only have to use dvd shrink though because dvd shrink has a bulit in decrypter .so it's an all in one process with dvd shrink .unless the file. is really protected then use dvd decrypter. have a nice day and good luck .

This is a new problem that has cropped up. Whenever I download a file to my computer, I am unable to open it up to run or install it. I have the problem with .zip files, .PDF files, .exe files, etc. I see the download occurring, and it all seems to be going fine, but when it is done, it is not on my desktop where I have my files saved, and when I right-click on the file in the Download box (where it shows the status of the download), the option to open the file is faded and won't work. What could have happened to my settings to make this happen? Does it mean I have a virus? I have AVG virus protection and it is up to date.

I have a second computer (laptop) that is running Windows 7. I have no problem saving files to that computer, so I can copy them to my Flash drive and move them to the desktop computer, but I'm sunk when I try to get a program like Adobe Acrobat Reader that downloads and installs in one operation..... I can't save the program to bring to the desktop computer.

The Norton one will be your update ActiveX,
The Flash is macromedia ActiveX control.

Both can be deleted,

However when you next update Norton it will be reinstalled, and by deleting the shockwave control will mean you will not be able to view some websites properly

Both are legitimate controls and can be safely left on your system

I have this problem that most every file I download gets corrupted. From music files off iTunes to .exe files, they all get corrupted. I don't know if this is stemming from the same problem, but whenever I try watching Youtube videos, the red streaming bar will continue to fill up the bar as if the entire movie has finished downloading, but the video stops dead in the middle as if I reached the end of the video. It's probably not my internet connection, because when I tried connecting my laptop to the same Ethernet cable as my desktop, my laptop doesn't experience this problem. I've tried cleaning my registry which didn't help as well. It could be malware, but unfortunately, I can't update Adaware or AVG as the update files aren't immune from this problem. I just downloaded a file of the game rome total war (which looks amazing). But for some reason when I send the file to be compressed so I can put it in my computer, it says that it can't be compressed. When I click on it, it doesnt do anything except say its not a valid win32 application. What else can I do?? Thank you!

A:Problem with downloaded files

its probably because the download was a bogus file. Make sure its an exe other than that why do you wanna zip it up? If you use XP compression, its naff and usually gets bigger not smaller!.

Try opening other EXE's also, because there is a virus (I think its the [email protected]) that screws all the file associations and stops you opening any EXEs. For this there's a simply registry fix.

Hope it helps

Hello, my name is Ryan and I'm having a problem with added UFO extencions to my downloaded files. I've recently put an email on a microsoft community support site, so here it is...

After downloading a specific type of file from online,
I am unable to access it in any way. This seems to happen
with files that are saved as the .UFO type. For example,
I've recently tried downloading AOL instant messenger,
which saved as Install_AIM.exe.ufo, but after double
clicking on the file, and trying to explore its contents I
am unable to open it in any way. Many other files I've
downloaded also cannot be opened. I have a windows XP home
edition, and I have netscape 7.0 as an internet provider.
Any help would be welcome. Thanks.

Hello Ryan,

It appears that some application is adding the .ufo extencion to your
downloaded files. This may be due to using some type of download manager or
even possibly some other 3rd party application running in the background,
you might want to check the settings in Netscape to see if the cause might
be with the browser. You might want to try the download using Internet
Explorer, if this is successfull then you might want to contact Netscape
support for assistance. Your example of the AOL (Install_AIM.exe.ufo)
download you might try to remove the .ufo from the file name and then
double-click the file to see it it will run.

Thank You

I run Firefox 3.0.3 under Windows XP SP2 Home.
I have downloaded, a new batch of .jpg files from a trustworthy site that I have been using without any problem for a couple of years. With the latest batch of files I find that whenever I try to open any one with PaintShop Pro, I get an Open File - Security Warning asking me if I really want to open it from an unknown publisher.

If I check the file's properties, I find it is blocked. I can unblock each file individually, either by changing the property or by checking an option on the Security Warning.

I can see no reason for this happening suddenly. I have found various possible solutions proposed (but for slightly different environments or file-types), but they do not work for me. Is there any really proven solution for either preventing the blocking in the first place or removing the block en bloc?

Aren`t they going to your downloads folder, set it up so all your downloads will go there, it`s the default location in Windows 7, unless you`ve changed it.

In Chrome it`s in Settings/Advanced Settings/Downloads

Set it to download files to the downloads folder. You can always move them someplace else later.

From time to time, my CPU rises to 100% and pretty much lags me out from doing anything.

- I have all the latest drivers installed.

- sometimes, the CPU is fine, and when im done downloading a song or a .zip file, the files end up being corrupted or the song ends up skipping because it wasnt downloaded correctly.

- videos on youtube tend to load very slowly at times, and its not just from the server ive tested the same videos with my laptop and all runs smooth.

I was wondering is this because of my Video card or possibly my Power supply ? im not to sure whats causing the problem. And I dont see any certain program pop out as being overworked. Firefox is being used the most at around 50% and Ive only got Winamp/ZA Firewall and Firefox open with all this lag still.

- All of my drivers are currently updated from Windows update

Heres my system specs, any recommendations or probable upgrades I should do to my Pc/ Or help is greatly appreciated

CPU: Intel Pent 4 3.06GHZ, 3065 Mhz, 1 Core (2 Logical processors)
Memory: 2 GIGS of DDR2 RAM
VIDEO: Geforce 9500 GT
Power Supply: 300 Watts
I remember before installing Windows 7, windows 7 advisor said theres probably going to be problems running Windows Aero with my Graphics card.

A:100% CPU / Downloaded files corrupted /

No, your graphics card should be working perfectly well with Aero. I highly doubt it has anything to do with power supply.

I'm beta testing ZoneAlarm Extreme myself and have found it to be excellent. They just put a new version which you might want to get and install. You can upgrade without removing the old one.

Here is a link to that: https://www.zonealarm.com/security/e...A-60day-1user#

But what you should really do is use the backup feature found within ZoneAlarm so it saves to your documents folder.

Then completely uninstall ZoneAlarm from your system. You can restore your settings from the backup easily when you want to reinstall.

Point is, get that off your system and then tell us how things are.

We have similar CPU and you use all the same apps as me. Nice.

Another recomendation, although it's unlikely will fix anything, is to visit NVidia's site and install the driver for your graphics card from there. WU drivers...well....are WU drivers...even though they are from the manufacturer too.

Here is the graphics driver you should be using: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_wi...1.07_whql.html

And very good luck to you!

Hi!
Whenever i download a file such as .msi installer, .exe executable, or .zip archive with IE and run it, it crashes (not IE but the file that was downloaded.) This recently started happening on my Home Premium 64-bit Vista installation, and the problem remains after reinstalling Vista two times from scratch. If the file was downloaded on another PC and saved to a flash drive, it runs fine on Vista. I have tried the sfc /scannow command, as well as disabling any firewall, antivirus, etc. and changing the IE settings. This occurs on a clean installation of Windows Vista also. Here is the crash report, for example this time I was trying to install the FireFox installer after downloading it with IE:

help with this issue would be GREATLY appreciated as it has been plaguing me for months!

A:Please help - Downloaded files are corrupted

I know and understand the problems you're having as I too have had the same issues. I'm running vista business 64bit connected via wifi to a belkin router, and when I download files (zip, rar, exe etc) they would all be corrupt. However I noticed this problem would come out of the blue and then vanish without explanation. After trying countless things to resolve the issue I made what I think may be a discovery:

Last night in an attempt to resolve the issue I disconected from my own home network and connected to my neightbours instead, and all of a sudden the problem was gone. When I reconnected to my own network the problem returned.

Now for the strange part, I have a vista 32bit laptop which is connected directly to the same belkin router via ethernet cable and it never has experienced this problem, however if I have something downloading directly onto the laptop, then at the same time start downloading something on my 64bit vista workstation via wifi, the problem disappears. In other words if my 64bit downloads without using my full 8mb bandwidth the problem goes away. So now I am getting past the problem by forcing my vista 64bit workstation to download alot slower than my bandwidth allows.

I have no earthly idea why this is happening, but in my case at least it would appear that the problem is localised to the network, or router or modem. As I stated when I connect to my neighbours 2mb wifi network the problem 100% stops!

If anyone can shed any further light on this is... Read more

After downloading and saving an exe file from an internet site extension jpg is added so that file appears as filename.exe.jpg. This just recently started on my XP so I have done something to add the jpg file extension. If I rename the file without the jpg extension everything works fine. What have I done and how do I correct it?

A:jpg added to downloaded exe files

Not sure what happened to cause it. Since it happened recently, try system restore.
