Hi All

Can anyone recommend a hard drive diagnostic
tool for Toshiba MK6465GSX.

Have done some research on this topic and from
my understanding, there is no tool released by the
manufacturer which actually works - the story is
that Toshiba tests come back as failed even if the drive
is OK.

I currently have no problem with my drive but am
interested to know in case of any future problem.
Therefore a solution is not urgent.

I also looked at DOS Seatools however it seems
that the DOS version can only be used on Seagate and
Maxtor drives.

So if anyone has any suggestion on a bootable diagnostic
tool for my make of drive please post.

Ty in advance for replies

A:Hard Drive Diagnostic Tool For Toshiba

I have used Hitachi drive fitness test. It seems to work with all brands of hard drives.

Not as good as a manufacturer's specific diagnostic, but good enough.

I have also heard that Hiren's Boot CD has a Toshiba diagnostic on it, but it is probably the same tool you used.

Is there a diagnostic tool I can run to figure out what folders and files are taking up all this space?

I can perform a Standard test without any difficulty. However, when I tried to attempt an Extended test the process halted at about 10% of even the
first test. After about a quarter of an hour it was still at this point so I pressed Esc to cancel the test.
How long would this Extended test normally take ? Was I a little premature in stopping it ?

Your throughest testing would be memtest86.

Its a boot cd thats run startup and let run.

Got infected with this virus, which looks and acts just like what is described in the Hard Drive Diagnostic Uninstall Guide. On starting up, it starts going through its thing, but when I ctrl-alt-delete, Task Manager button was greyed out! I got it back by booting in safe mode with command prompt and then deleting this from the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DisableTskMgr

Now I can ctrl-alt-delete and stop the popups that the malware displays, but then I am just stuck in a blank, black safe mode screen with no taskbar. I can pull up a command prompt, but no idea what to do with it. I can get back into the task manager, but nothing is running in applications, and the list of processes doesn't mean anything to me.

I'm ready to make a log, but not sure how to get the log-making files onto the computer.
Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I recently purchased a Dell Studio 1747 laptop. However, it had numerous issues. I managed to get enough replacement parts for it to finally be fixed, however, I would like to test one of my old memory sticks in Windows 7 Memory Diagnostics to see which one is defective. I had 4 GB of RAM. Surely, both couldn't be, right? I think only one of them was defective. I want to test to see which stick it could be, simple enough, right?

Even simpler question. In the Windows 7 Memory Diagnostic Tool, what is the max amount of RAM it can scan? In Vista/XP it was 4 GB. Is it the same for the Windows 7 version? I am running a 64-bit OS. If not, shall I just remove one of the existing (good) sticks of RAM and replace it with the questionable one and run the test?

I've already ran the test on my new, freshly replaced RAM, which came back all-clear, so, I know any new errors should be attributed to the extra RAM I put in.

Thanks,

How exactly do I burn the windiag.iso file that mtinst.exe creates to CD? Do I simply use the "burn Iso File" option of my burning software [Nero 6]? Do I rename the file to remove the .iso extension, and then "burn Iso file", as in the instructions for creating slipstreamed installation cds? Do I need to use Nero's "create bootable CD" option and then burn the iso file?

Any advice on how best to use WMDT? MS suggests using the menu options to turn the CPU cache off and to run the "extended memory map" rather than the default standard map.

Well, I have dealt with viruses in the past, even the tough ones that had to be removed manually. But this one definitely has been frustrating. I cannot seem to get rid of it, I've hunted down using a few tools and still have had no success. Anti-Virus programs are not picking it up. Now for the most part I'm stopping it from using up my CPU and blocked it from downloading and wasting my bandwidth, but I want to be rid of it. The file executable is named stdrt.exe, it creates a file folder, within Windows/temp, generating a letter/number combo title. I have tried to delete registry keys that referred to the stdrt.exe file and have removed the temp file and killed the stdrt.exe process numerous times with no success. So, I'm posting here today hoping I can receive some help on this matter.

I scheduled windows to check for memory problems. Then when i restarted windows it was stuck in a loop of checking memory problems. It didnt find any problems. When the test finishes it just starts over. And if i hit exit it just restarts the test. Restarting my computer doesnt help. And i tried pressing F8 to go to safe mode but it wont open it just goes straight to wmd. I found this online which said it would stop it:

The fix should be done on the command line by launching a command prompt as administrator...

bcdedit.exe /bootsequence {current}

Then...

bcdedit.exe /default {current}

But i cant get to command prompt. Also i put my windows disk in that came with my asus computer and i cant access command prompt threw there either. It doesnt even give me the option to repair windows. Just restore. I think if i could make a boot disk to load command prompt i might be able to fix my promble. So if anybody knows how to fix this i would greatly appreciate it. Also restore is NOT an option.

Hello , I am writing to you from my friends computer.

I am running windows 7 for long time and I havent came accross this yet , so this is what happend in shorter version :

I was using my computer when the screen just went black. I just tought to myself its probably something wrong with my memory so i ran the Memory Diagnostic Tool ,I picked the first choice that it recommended "Save work and restart the system".

The computer restarted , and the tool started to work after 15-20 minutes it was nearly done 90 somthing % , i just went down stairs to get a drink and when i came backed upstairs i realised that the scanning is at 8% again , I tought maybe thats how it works , scans 2-3 times , i lefted the computer working over the night when i waken up the tool was still working , went to work , came backed and the tool was still working , i just said to myself this has to be wrong , i unpluged the pc left it over the night. Turned it on , the diagnostic tool started itself again , The scan was neraly over when just again i realised that this think goes in infinity. I pressed the " Esc" button as it said to finish but when i press the button the scan just resets and goes from 0% again

It doesnt want to let me run safe mode or anything else , only go to bios set up.

I would really appreciate if you could help me guys, bye

Hi, I'm new on these forums and this is my first post. Nice to meet you all.

Anyway, I have windows Vista Business and it's my first time switching from Windows XP. I explored most of the OS already and tried out the new features. Here's my problem:

I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool 5 days ago, for the first time. I hit "run diagnostic check on the next reboot" and it scheduled a diagnostic memory check for me.

I know i don't have memory problems but i ran the test anyway. It came back with no errors in my memory. Now I log back into windows after it self-restarts and it tells me that no errors were found. Now all is good, except now every time i reboot, the memory diagnostic tool runs, checking my memory.... it takes 8 minutes if I don't cancel the test myself and it's getting annoying.

Is there anyway to stop this thing from running every time i boot up? The diagnostic test runs after the P.O.S.T. and before Vista begins to load.

here are my machine specs:
Lenovo T61 laptop
Intel Core2Duo 2.4ghz T7700
Nvidia 140m
2gb RAM and 1gb turbocache

A:Memory Diagnostic Tool keeps launching on boot up windows 7

Find out for sure by testing your RAM with memtest 86 for 5-6 passes or overnight to stress it. RAM - Test with Memtest86+

You are testing both the RAM and the slots here. I would also remove the RAM and examine the slots for debris, which is a good time to thoroughly blow out the dust in your PC.

If this doesnt' solve the error message then run SFC -SCANNOW Command .

I have bought a new PC for my wife without OS. It is an Acer N2120G supplied only with FreeDOS on the HD. I have installed Win 7 Pro via a USB flash drive, using the Windows DVD/USB tool from the install DVD without any great difficulty.
Everything works but once she started using it she gets crashes about once a day. I tried it myself and get the same problem. At present there isn't anything elaborate installed. Mainly it will be used for browsing and emails and a few of the built in card games.

She had to stop using it so I could check it all. I started with simple checks like PW and SFC and they looked fine. I went back to the AMD website and their auto detect told me that I had all the up to date drivers.
Just to be safe, I updated all the drivers from the supplied driver CD. I was especially cautious about the graphics card as I know that can be very sensitive! But the crashes still occurred - maybe after 6 hours - maybe after 6 minutes

I also wiped the 5GB partition used for FreeDOS and set it as an unallocated, empty, space as we will never need the full 500GB on the HD.
A couple of days ago I set the PC to run the Memory Diagnostic from Administrative Tools. Just the standard shutdown and run option. (I had already tried a WinDiag CD that I have had for years and that didn't show any problems, but I know it was designed before 4GB RAM was allowable. So I thought it best to try again with the up to date tool.)

Use the RAM - Test with Memtest86+.

I'd also scan with Malwarebytes, SFC, establish a Clean Boot, and the rest of the steps from Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

Compare the install you did with the perfect install compiled in Clean Reinstall Windows 7. It's always best to delete all partitions during reinstall or if there was a foreign boot agent on the drive as in FreeDOS then I'd wipe it first with Diskpart Clean Command lest that boot code remain on the disk.

My laptop (HP Pavilion dv2000) running Vista Premium SP2 has started running really slowly recently and I've been trying to find out why. One of the steps I've taken in trying to detect the issue is running Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool at startup. I ran this test successfully in the Basic Mode which includes MATS+, INVS, and SCHCHR, and when I say successful, I just mean that I don't see any results but the test completed. I tried running the test twice in Standard mode (same tests as basic + LRAND, Stride6, CHCKR3, WMATS+ and WINVC) and my computer powers off abruptly each time before the test even reaches 5% completion in the first run.

A:Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool Powers Off My Laptop

If the computer powers off during the test, try this free memory test:
http://www.carrona.org/memdiag.html (read the details at the link)

If it still shuts off, then you've got a hardware problem. Blow out the vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or vacuum cleaner - it'll cause damage) and ensure that the fan is working.

Beyond that, it's gonna require taking the case apart.

Hello all. I'm currently talking to you from Safe Mode in Windows 7 32 bit.

I've been running Windows 7 for quite some time now and I haven't run across any hiccups like with the previous versions of Windows... until now.
I recently bought a copy of Star Craft 2 from Gamestop. Doing this allows you to be in the beta program... so I figured "Oh, good stuff".

I tried to patch the program and I received an error during the patch process. To make a long story short, Blizzard informed me that I should run the Windows 7 memory diagnostic tool to make sure that my RAM wasn't at fault, using the extended test. I figured "Ok, no problem".

I ran the tool, selected "Save work and restart the system".

The tool loads up and starts to run with 1 pass with a "basic" check. I realized after about 10 minutes into the check that I could hit F10 and change the options. I hit F10, changed the test to Extended and hit continue. The screen refreshed VERY slowly with the updated changes, except the progress went from 10% complete to look like "_%" for every spot that could have a % at it.

I thought that was odd, so I hit the Exit button.

The system rebooted.

The system started to hang at the BIOS POST screen a little longer that it usually does... normally it only stays there about 2-3 seconds... it now stays there for around 10-15 seconds.

The Windows 7 logo starts to load and then freezes half way through loading graphic. The system han... Read more

OK, here's the deal: I have an old Quantum Fireball ST hard drive. It hasn't worked for some time, and I keep trying to run a diagnostic on it. I've tried Maxtor's PowerMax (downloaded the latest, version 4.09) and it won't detect the drive at all. Just for grands, I tried Western Digital's diagnostic on it. WD's diagnostic pulled up the drive name and everything, but said it couldn't run any tests because it's not a WD drive.

So here's my question, why can't Maxtor read their own friggin drives!?!?? And if they can't do anything to it, is there another program out there than can test the drive?

Depends on the make/model of your drive. Western Digital has an excellent little utility to check THEIR drives. Do you know what kind of drive you have? You may need to open the computer and have a look on the drive. Then go to the drive's manufacture's web site and see if anything is offered.

Hello
Is anybody familiar with the Drive Health program from Helexis Software Development? I would
like to know how reliable it is. I have been running it for about 10 or 11 months, and it now says
that my HD is going to start to deteriorate on or about Tuesday and I should backup my data.
I also ran into a problem trying to backup my C drive (NTFS) onto an external HD (FAT32). The
error message said it could only backup about 4g, when there is about 111g more space on
the external HD.

A:Hard Drive Diagnostic Utilities

Lone Star:I am not familiar with the tool that you mentioned. I would be inclined to try a tool from the manufacturer of the hard disk to check the integrity of your drive. What is the make and model of your drive? The following link should be helpful in troubleshooting this problem.Hard Drive Installation and Diagnostic ToolsYou also mentioned backing up files to your external hard drive. I am not sure if you are trying to backup the entire drive. I would suggest that you try copying only data files that are critical. At least, you will those backed up in case something goes wrong with the drive. What was the exact message that you received when you attempted the backup. Is your hard disk under warranty?Hope that helps.

Hello,

Looks like my laptop became infected while I was having help fixing my desktop! When I try to start up my computer, immediately I get a pop up from Hard Drive Diagnostic saying that certain programs are "not supported on this machine." My screen stays black without any icons and the systems tray doesn't come up either. It pretty much stays black with the Hard Drive Diagnostic screen staying on top of anything I try to open. I can open up in safemode and I went through the protocol for posting a gmer log. DeFogger worked, DDS downloaded but there was a pop up saying this file dosen't have a program associated with it. When I ran GMER, it seemed tobe doing fine but my computer shut off and rebooted about half way through the scan.

Sorry I don't have any logs...

Hello and welcome to Bleeping ComputerPlease refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process. Please also continue to work with me until I give you the all clear. Even if your computer appears to act better, you may still be infected.Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.Once we start working together, please reply back within 3 days or this thread may be closed so we can help others who are waiting.First, please try following these steps here in the removal guide, specifically the Automated Removal Instructions for Hard Drive Diagnostic using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware section.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-hard-drive-diagnosticPlease post the TDSSKiller log, the Rkill log and the MBAM log in your reply...and a DDS log after all that if you are able.

I have this seemingly unbeatable malware called hard drive diagnostic. It is basically a program that hides all desktop icons, removes all program files shortcuts, installs crap on your computer, hides all the folders in "my computer" and pretends to be a crappy antivirus.
I have tried following this guide: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-hard-drive-diagnostic
It worked fine once, I started the malware program which eliminated the adware files, restarted the computer and found the same malware files again. Now I can no longer run Rkill or MBAM, not even off of a usb drive.
Any other suggestions before I start formatting my hard drive?

My computer keeps showing a screen that says Hard Drive Diagnostic and makes my background black. It will not let me take it off or shut it down and keeps telling me all these kinds of errors such as "Boot Sector of the hard drive is damaged- Critical error". I have searched for hours and found no info on how to go about removing this. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Guys,

Let me start by warning you that I am not a whiz when it comes to computers!

My Dell Dimension 4600 has been getting a little cantankerous of late, to the point where it failed to boot up today (I'm on the laptop!).

I've looked for solutions, and the end result after getting a "blue screen" with an "Unmountable Boot Volume" message is the following:

IDE Hard Drive Diagnostics
Primary SATA
Drive 0: No device
Secondary SATA
Drive 0: No device

Primary IDE
Drive 0: WDC WD600BB-75CAAO - Fail. Return Code: 7
Drive 1: Maxtor 6E040l0 - Pass

etc...

Is this the dreaded hard drive crash?

Any advice gratefully received!

Angoos

A:Dell IDE Hard Drive Diagnostic: Fail!

It is either a dead hard drive or the motherboard has stopped talking to it. My bet would be the drive, given the symptoms.

External backup for 2 Win7 home computers.

Prices are currently at a premium for a 2T 2 1/2" USB 3x external backup drive.

I will retire the XP machine soon that is being replaced by the new Win7 machine. The XP machine has 2 drives--one of which is slower than molasses and you can hear the thing churning away when nothing should be going on (indexing off).

I've never had much luck with diagnostic software--in particular PC Doctor when it was shipped with Lenovo systems.

Given the costs involved buying the software makes little sense.

Is there, in particular, hard drive diagnostic software that really can diagnose a problematic drive?

If I knew which drive was bad then I'd put the good one in a container and use it until the USB 3 externals come down in price.

Mark

A:Existing hard drive diagnostic vs. new external

I believe all hard drive manufacturers offer their own diagnostic tools. Seagate, just for example, offers SeaTools which can be used on any hard drive.

SeaTools for Windows | Seagate

These tools try to stress the drive to expose any problems. The stressing could possibly push a failing drive over the edge. If you need to find the hard drive manufacturer, a free tool called Speccy would hold.

We had this problem on my wife's computer running Windows XP and tried to remove it ourselves. First, I did properties of the icon on the desktop labeled "Hard Drive Diagnostics". I went to the location shown in the properties and tried to remove the 3 files and got a message couldn't delete, so I renamed them with the extension .old to no avail. We tried to use the Uninstall guide that was posted by Grinier on Dec. 6, 2010, but after running TDSSKiller, IExplore.exe, and then running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Anti-Malware scanned and returned nothing found. We have also tried to revert to last known Windows download as suggested by another PC support person at my wife's work. I hope you can help us as nothing seems to help. We have 4 users setup on this PC by my wife and the original problem was on the "Jennifer" user. We used the "Jennifer2" user and at first it showed no sign of the malware, but the next day it showed up there as well. I am attaching the requested logs. If you need anything else just let me know. What do you use, and what do you think is the best?

A:Best Bootable Hard Drive Diagnostic Tools

The UBCD contains numerous diagnostic tools, the most important ones in regard to hard drive diagnostics are the ones from the hard drive manufacturer's themselves. You can also download the same diagnostics or newer versions of them from each hard drive manufacturer, for example if you have a Seagate hard drive you would use/download the Seagate SeaTools diagnostics to test the hard drive.

The PB diagnostics are likely similar but customized for PB.

I restarted my computer to find that my hard drive was partitioned.
I extended the drive back and rebooted.
Now in windows explorer I am at a loss of about 200 gb of space.
The space is apparently missing.
I will attach two pictures.
One of the Windows explorer and the other of a tool I used called partition wizard.

and here is partition wizard

Partition clearly shows that I have all the space I originally had, but windows explorer doesnt.
How can I fix this?

Hello,

I recently had a hard drive diagnostic virus that I removed following the guide on bleeping computer. I'm now left with browser redirect problems. Internet explorer is unusable, firefox is manageable.

Search results in google appear, but when you click a link the redirect kicks in and sends you to an unrelated page, although it's typically to random search pages, kelkoo or out of date websites. Nothing commercial or obviously malicious.

If you frantically click a link you can bypass the redirect. Or clicking the link and then "back" and repeat 4 or 5 times will also bypass it. Once you've bypassed the redirect you can generally browse ok, except that it's quite slow.

If you open a new window or tab then the problem starts all over again.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Running: Windows Vista Home Premium

The first sign of trouble came when I got a "hard disk failure" warning and Windows crashed. I restarted the computer and to my horror, the desktop was black, with only an Internet Explorer icon. Everything else was gone, even the Start Menu was blank. Then the fake antivirus popups and this message popped up: "The system has found problems with one or more installed IDE/SATA hard disks." I first ran a full scan on my PC with McAfee AntiVirus Plus, which I have. It found 2 problems and I restarted, but got the same popups/warnings/missing files upon rebooting. Crap.

I Googled and found out it's a trojan called Hard Drive Diagnostic, so I used bleepingcomputer's official thread about removing it, found here: (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-hard-drive-diagnostic) and followed the steps first in Safe Mode with Networking (I've been told this is what you do to remove viruses). However RKill found no processes to stop, so I rebooted in Normal mode and ran Rkill again. This time it stopped a malware process, and I proceeded to run a full MalwareBytes scan (without rebooting, as instructed). After a 2 hr 30 minute scan, it found 10 Objects Infected (never had a number this high before!) and I Quarantined/erased and rebooted.

To my dismay, the fake virus scanning popups/warnings popped up. Still, I proceeded with the next step and downl... Read more

A:Hard Drive Failed during diagnostic. Error Code 2000-0142

The drive needs to be replaced.  If the system is under warranty, call Dell with the error and they'll arrange that.
if the system is out of warranty, and you need a recommendation for a replacement drive and installation instructions, we'll need the full model number (i.e., Inspiron N5110, 5521, etc.).
You're also going to need a set of recovery media -- if you did not prepare one when you received the system, you'll either need to download and make that (newer systems) or call Dell to purchase it (older systems).

Hello,If it is one thing that I have noticed from working on Dell computers, it is that most of them use the tools provided by Dell a little differently from model to model. Especially if your PC is a few years old. You may need to insert one of the disks that came with your PC, if you have one that is a couple of years old. The newer Dell's don't come with any of the disks unless you beg them, and pay $10.Most of the newer Dell's that have the diagnostics onboard, are generally accessed like this.1. Turn on (or restart) your computer.2. When the DELL? logo appears, press F12 immediately.3. When the boot device list appears, highlight Boot to Utility Partition and press Enter.4. When the Dell Diagnostics Main Menu appears, select the test you want to run.Hope this helps, nos

Hi. I have had my PC perfectly running since 2010. I have played all kind of video games with no problem with my GXT 580. Recently I hired and installer to add more ram to my PC and a SSD drive. He tried for a lot of time to install the additional ram and did some stuff on the bios with no avail. He then told me that he was going to leave the PC at that (with the original ram) and installed the SSD. Everything was great and I have been using my PC for almost 6 months without problems. The problems started last week when I decided to play again some video games. Whenever I was playing games (Planet Side 2 or GTAIV) then the infamous BSOD appeared. I think that if I never played any video games (since the new installation) I would have never experience the BSOD. I highly suspect of something the installer did. Please, please help me!! I've been getting the BSOD for almost a month now. It's just at startup which usually leads to a couple restarts and then everything works perfectly fine. Sometimes my .exe's don't work, sometimes my USB ports aren't recognized, and sometimes it just flatout freezes. But again, after a couple restarts everything goes back to normal. Anyway, I'm trying this tool and hopefully it works!

The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

I have a Logitech MX300 with wireless 3 button mouse.
The left, right and scroll wheel work fine, the center button doesn't seem to work at all.
I have the latest version of SetPoint and tried setting it up with different key mappings but to no avail.
I'm not even sure if it's working.

Is there any diagnostic tool that will show me when I push a button that it's being activated?

I first tried to get it to work in WOW(World of Warcraft) but no luck. I then realized it doesn't even seem to work outside the game. I mapped the button to be an 'X' and opened a text file. Pressing the button resulted in no action, no X's.

I'm running Win7 64bit.

Any ideas or info about a tool?

Thanks!

A:Is there a Mouse Diagnostic tool?

I have found that when one button stops working, it usually means that the mouse has gone bad. I think that Logitech warranty is 5 years, and when I sent them a message about a mouse limping like yours, then sent me a new one, without even returning the old one.

I've experienced some strange events on my computer and I thought the first thing I'd do is run some disk diagnositc tools. I have five physical disks:
C: system/program disk
D: backup of C
E: data disk
F: backup of E
G: Spare disk ... using as 2nd backup of C

Since C & D are Western Digital devices, I downloaded one of their LifeGuard Diagnostics: DLGDIAG for Windows, and ran the "Extended Test" against C, D, and G. All passed. The control panel says that SMART status is not available -- I forgot how to turn that on (as far as I know, it should work with all five drives).

Any hints on a more demanding disk test that would not wipe the disk clean ... I do not want to have to reinstall my software because of the test. For what it is worth, I'm using Acronis True Image to make image copies of C to D and G.

Suggestions appreciated!

A:Need Disk Diagnostic Tool

The disk manufacturer's tests are, in my opinion, the right ones to use.

I have a Samsung SV 320 3n HD in my 2003 HP Pavilion a320n windows xp desktop and according to an old Samsung web page I found that the HD diagnostic scanner to use for this HD should be HUTIL. I have tried both the iso version on a CD and the .exe version on a floppy and I couldn't get either to run. They both get to the first screen and don't go further. All the Samsung computer stuff has been bought out by Seagate and there is no support for this old drive or even a download for HUTIL on the Seagate website.. Can someone recommend a HD diagnostic scanner that might run on my old machine? Right now, I can't get it to boot in normal or safe, can't do system restore, or go bsck to last known good config, but I can boot with standalone virus scanners and have run several different ones without finding anything serious. I really just now, want to find a HD diagnostic tool I can run and get a report of some kind on the condition of the HD
Thanks

Hello everyone.. Ran across this link

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

in another (GASP, CHOKE) forum and thought I'd post it here for review/ comments.

I used the download file to create a boot floppy which runs the diagnostic. You also have the option of burning it to a CD.

One advantage I see over other memory diagnostics I've used, is this one runs it's test sequence (a set of 8) continuously until you stop it. This allows one to run a repeateitive test sequence over an extended period of time (like over night) and have a better chance of detecting an intermittent fault.

Check it out

I'm resurrecting WDT for Win 10, it's been quite useful at Eightforums - but Win 10, especially with digital entitlement, has different needs.

I uploaded a beta at github for those that would like to test and give feedback in terms of what is required etc. The thing at EF was I was one of few interpreting the diagnostic report, so making the report itself more user friendly is one of the main things we need to sort out.
The current report is almost verbatim what Windows' licensingdiag.exe utility produces.

NB Office is phase 2 so that will not be a priority right now.

Releases Superfly-Inc/Windows-Diagnostic-Tool GitHub

PS It also needs a new name.

NB: It may hang on first use - if so close and restart... it's a known bug.

For some reason I decided to run a full Extended Scan of my Western Digital hard disks (4 years old) using WD Lifeguard Diagnostic Tool for Windows. The tests ran and the drives passed. (Feb 28)

On the next startup (unfortunately this was partially unattended, I just caught the tail end of it) it looked like chkdsk was running. Some notes I jotted down (not well):
"Deleting corrupt attribute record (128, " " )
"One of you disks needs to be checked for consistency"
"60 reparse records processed"
"deleting index entry sessionstore.js in index $ "
After that, over the next week, some strange behavior occurred:
I went to scan some documents and received an error regarding a "bad image" of specific Epson DLLs, and suggestion to reinstall the drivers. The kicker: the scanner worked. I reinstalled the drivers anyway - end of that problem.
My laser printer disappeared from Devices and Printer. The kicker: I could still print to it from any program. Then it just reappeared, still the default printer.
Certain programs (Firefox, Thunderbird) do not start, or take quite a while to start (spinning orb). A restart of Windows clears that up when it happens. Watching task manager processes while waiting for the programs to start I noticed 3 instances of Windows Media Player come up and go off, then the program opened.
Shut Down was delayed on random occasions - in some cases requiring a Hard-Off
All these symptoms are new and occurred ... Read more

You should be able to see the info in event viewer
Check Disk (chkdsk) - Read Event Viewer Log

Pretty weird stuff you got going on - media player starting like that. It might take less time to put in a new drive and make a fresh OS build than to ferret out way this stuff is happening. But if you want to play with and learn from the situation that you have, Process Explorer might reveal what is launching media player.

Hi, hp Pavilion p7 1010, 64 bit, Windows 10 home edition.   My desktop is running perfectly except for this problem. For years I have had the hp Hardware Diagnostic tool on my PC.   Recently, it got uninstalled somehow.  I have unsuccessfully tried to re-install it and I keep getting this message: 1.  Hardware Diagnostic Tool will be installed in an UEFI partition on the hard drive.2.  HP Tools Partition cannot be found.3.  main drive already has 4 partitions.  Additional partitions cannot be created.4.  Error 1722- problem with Windows installer package. The download then stops and does not complete.   Over 3/4 of my C: drive is empty.   I don't understand why this program that was installed and worked for years, somehow disappeared and now will not re-install as it seems to think there is not enough room for this file??  Can you off me a suggestion as to how to reinstall this program.  I like to run this about once a month to check on the over functioning of my PC.Thank you, beachguy

Search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. Zip them and upload those.

Also upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.

Hello,

I have been downloading just about every diagnostic tool that I could find on Cnet, however none of them produce an error report that I can see so far. All the tools tell me what I have on my system, but what I want is a thorough analysis tool that will tell me what is wrong with my system. Does such a thing exist?

The problem I have is that my systems works ok, on a very basic level, like for tv streaming, internet and MS office. But not for anything that requires any degree of advanced graphics, even with old simple games.

I have no idea what is wrong and it is annoying because I cannot use my Steam account anymore!

Also, the fan on the graphics card goes nuts when do anything that requires it to work....

Any advice welcome!

Thanks

I ran the extended test overnight and this morning it had rebooted into Vista. The problem is that there are no results in the toolbar to be viewed as the tutorial said it should be. Where can I view the results of the memory test?

A:Memory Diagnostic Tool Problem

Which memory test, which tool, and which tutorial? I'm presuming that you're using the built in memory tester - and it should've given you a notice if it passed the test or if it found any problems. If you didn't get a message, then I'd suspect that the test terminated abnormally - so you'll have to run the test and see if you can get a message from it (or see when it terminates). This'll involve a lot of boring, staring at the screen - but I've found not evidence of a log file or results page that will be displayed. Here's a link to the BC tutorial on the memory test: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/using-vista-windows-memory-diagnostics-tool/

I'm trying to augment the HP USB 3-in-1 diagnostic tool, which also includes the ability to update the BIOS on any machine.  I've figured out that the .BIN file is the BIOS update file and to put it in the \Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\New folder to allow machines to be updated.  However, when I tried to update a HP EliteBook 8540w, it didn't work, giving me an error message of "Signature file not found." Since I'm able to update other HP systems (dc7800, EliteDesk 800 G1, ProDesk 600 G1, etc.) by putting just the .BIN file on the USB drive and selecting the update BIOS option from the BIOS, I figure it would also work using the HP 3-in-1 diagnostic tool.  Apparently, the 3-in-1 tool uses some form of CRC check to validate the BIOS file first.  The problem is, I don't know for which file the tool is looking, so I'm stuck. Does anyone know the file structure of the BIOS section of the 3-in-1 diagnostic tool?  I need to know what files need to be put in what locations in order for the BIOS update function to work correctly.  Any help which is provided is greatly appreciated. Thanks,Timothy

Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Can you put Recovery Drive D on a flash drive to free up hard drive

To be honest a recovery drive won't give you much space (10 GB or so?). You are better off with a USB external HDD and move your less accessed data to the external.

I wonder what others will say.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit version on a new computer (30 days old). After experiencing several BSOD, I decided to run a memory diagnostic. However, every time I try to run Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, it starts up to run it but then I get a screen saying it cannot be run because /boot/memtest.exe is missing or corrupted.

It was suggested by a helpful Microsoft tech from India that I should do a "in-place upgrade" however in following the instructions I got to the point where it asks whether I want to do a Upgrade Install and keep my files, programs, etc. or a Custom (advanced) Install but lose my files, programs, etc. The tech suggested I do the latter but I don't want to have to reinstall everything.

1. Any idea why my memtest.exe is not working?

2. What is the proper way to "rewrite" the OS (and presumably a function version of memtest.exe) onto my hard drive without losing all my data.

A:Missing Vista Memory Diagnostic Tool

The way to do this would be the In Place Upgrade. Why memtest.exe isn't working - most likely because it's either not there, or the path to it is incorrect. My suggestion tho', is to download a free, bootable memory testing utility and leave the system alone (if it's working properly otherwise). Here's a link to one that I use: http://www.memtest86.com/

Hi,

This is a new Diagnostic Tool i did my self that will put all the files in one directory.
Its like the SF Diagnostic Tool but this one i tested is working without any exceptions or errors.

You can download the tool here: https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resi...Iu2opNumRTUB9w

If there is any problem tell me here please and i also added a button called: Send Email
In case there is any problem with my program this button will be activated and then clicking on it will send an email to me with a text file that will describe the problem.

But so far i tested the program on win8 win7 winxp and vista and its working.

Next step and the last one will be a new button called Zip Files clicking on him will make automatic zip file of all the files ready to upload to the forum.
