Snipping Tool Error Message - Solution?

Q: Snipping Tool Error Message - Solution?

I have been using the Snipping Tool for quite a while now but today when I tried to use it I get the following error message:

"The Snipping Tool is not working on your computer right now. Restart your computer, and then try again. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator."

My Problem Steps Recorder & Screen Recorder both work fine.

I ran MS Office Diagnostic and tried scanning for issues via the Action Center with no results. I tried using the Turn Windows Features on/off and deleted Tablet PC options, rebooted, reinstalled Tablet PC options, rebooted, etc. Nothing seems to be resolving this problem.

I have not installed any new software. I have not used any registry cleaners. My Reliability Index does not report any issues. I'm totally stumped here! Is there anyway to uninstall and reinstall the tool? Registry key editing? Services to enable?

Nope, but you can run a system file check to verify and repair system files
type cmd in search>right click and run as admin>SFC /SCANNOW

Hi

I am using Vista Home Premium, SP2 with updates installed to today's date (August 16, 2014)

After rebooting my computer, I go to use Snipping Tool and I get this error message:
" The Snipping Tool is not working on your computer right now. Restart your computer and try again..."

I close the error message, and I execute Snipping Tool again, and it executes properly. I can use it without a problem until I reboot the computer, and the same error happens again.

I have tried some things like, checking for 1. Windows Updates,
2.remove and adding after a reboot: Tablet PC Components' in Control Panel Programs and Features/Turn On Windows Features. 3. Cleaning up the registry with CCleaner. 4. doing a sfc/scannow

Help is appreciated,

update#1 on problem:
1. tried starting Vista in Safe Mode, still had the same problem error with Snipping Tool
2. about to try Vista Restore back to the time when it was working correctly
will report back

update#2
tried system restore, Snipping Tool worked perfectly but then I reinstalled all the latest Windows updates (about 10 or eleven of them and the error message returned). This must mean there is a flaw in one of the updates.

Help is appreciated.

Hello All,

I wonder if there is someone who might be able to solve a recent problem I got with the Snipping Tool application (ST).

ST was working perfect until very recently and then it suddenly started giving my problems; everytime I tried to save an image I kept getting this error (See picture).

I've tried several things to fix this issue such as running DLL-Fixer (initially a thought it was a .dll issue), running Malwarebytes, HitmanPro, and a full scan with Norton IS-2014 and Eset Online Scanner. I found nothing, or at least nothing serious.

Afterwards, I performed a Clean Boot and checked applications in both *services* and *startup* to see if there was a conflict with the ST. I noticed something odd with one of the applications (on startup) called ADM Hydra Vision Desktop Manager (AHV): I realized that was able to get proper functionality of the ST after unchecking AHV and rebooting again... So, I thought that I had isolated the problem. Consequently, I decided to let AHV uncheck from the start up list (using System Configuration) and rebooted again, but after a while the problem resumed once more.

Any ideas?

Is it just me or is anyone else having trouble accessing the Snipping Tool from the new Metro Start? I seem to be able to click on it, but then nothing happens... I've resorted to making a desktop shortcut for now, but was wondering if anyone had the issue fixed.

A:Snipping Tool

Nothing happens?

Mine inconveniently opens on the Metro Screen itself. Sometimes it just auto minimizes straight after being opened. Check task manager to see if it ran then hid.

I ended up pinning it to the start menu with the Classic Start Menu Enable/Disable toggle context menu.

My snipping tool is acting up. I click the icon (on task bar) and it starts to glow a reddish colour and flashes slowly. Maybe about 1/2 a minute later, the snipping tool window opens and then again, sometimes it doesn't open at all. I was trying to snip an email pic in Outlook.

I had to leave the office here because I used foul language and had to chill out a bit. I use this tool alot.

So please tell me you know what the problem is.

I have moved it to my start menu and so far so good, but I would like to have it on my taskbar.

Thanks and have a good one!

I don't know what happened here, but my shortcut that points to the snipping tool turned into one of those generic icons - and it says that it can't find C:Windows\System32\SnippingTool.exe... Sure enough, a check of \System32 shows it's not there. I didn't go in there... so I have no idea what happened here. It's not in the recycle bin either, so it didn't get accidentally deleted, at least not recently.

So, is it as simple as grabbing a copy of SnippingTool.exe from another installation and pasting it into \System32...? Any risk in this (aside from it not working if there were some dependencies that are also gone?)

If that doesn't work does sfc restore this?

Thanks, --ch

I have had Windows 7 Pro since September of 2010, had to re-install windows due to a drive by virus hit, re-installed in November 2010. Has worked great ever since for the most part. Have used the snipping tool many times. Now a couple of weeks ago it disapeard. I have looked in the two program files area one these folders has an X86 in the name, anyway I cannot find it anywhere.

I did install in March of 2011 a program called Printscreen program by American that I used for years in XP and was surprised to find that it worked in Win7 pro at least I thought it did then I discovered it would not work inside another program running in win 7 so i removed it via Programs and Features. A short time after that i found that the Snipping Tool is gone.

Hi,

Have been using that MS "Snipping Tool" that came with W7 on my PC quite often.
Really a nice little add-on.

However, I cannot get the "Eraser" function to ever work.

I looked for an update of it to download, but can't find anyplace.
Is there one ?

And, anyone know how to get the Eraser to function like it should ?
I think, but am not sure, that it did at one time.

Thanks,
Bob

The eraser will only erase things that you put in with the pen. It will not erase anything in the actual snip.

A:SNIPPING TOOL

Hello,

If you are using Windows XP, you might want to try a free program called PrintKey 2000, version 5.10 Full. It should do what you need, and I have had no problems using it myself for several years, both at home and at work. Not sure if it also works in Vista or 7, though, but you might give it a try to find out.

The "about" feature of the software claims it is free for use by an individual or Company.

Please note, however, that the software is no longer supported by the manufacturer, as they are now selling a more advanced version called PrintKey-Pro. The older, free version should still be safe to use, though.

Good luck.

Has anyone else noticed this bug with the Snipping Tool?

This is a Window snip of CPU-Z and I highlighted the name of the processor. Notice the blank area above the snip, and where the highlighted mark is. It is as though the highlighting and pen annotation are done on a separate layer which is superimposed on top of the image. Unfortunately, this layer seems to be out of alignment. Sometimes, the highlighter and pen don't seem to work.

It is supposed to darken the screen while snipping. The actual snip should work well. If not, check that you have latest video driver from http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx

Alternatively, you can use ctrl+print screen to capture. Then paste into your favorite app like Photoshop or MS Paint. In PS, after capture, hit file | new.

Any hints on this?

A:How do you use the snipping tool in Metro?

Welcome to EightForums, phxheat13.

Good question. Yes, the snipping tool is a Win32 desktop program, so I believe it won't work on the Modern/Metro side. There may be an app in the Store. I'm on my 7 side currently, but when I'm in 8 I'll check it out.

You can use WinKey/PrintScreen combo that will take a screenshot and place it in a folder named the same for you to edit in an editing program or app.

I have read most posts re problem of missing Snipping Tool. I have tried most everything but nothing worked to restore it. I am running Windows 7 and have done the following:

1. I checked System32 folder and it was not there. I unchecked "Tablet PC Components". When I went to recheck it nothing happened. I rebooted and tried to check it again and nothing happened. It wouldn't recheck.

I have read several very lengthy articles concerning adding Windows original Snipping tool to XP Home. None of them were very helpful.

My questions are: Can Windows original Snipping Tool be added to XP Home, and if so, where do I get it and what other software programs are required for it's installation?

When I try to take the snip all I'm getting is a picture of a black screen (hope this makes sense).

It's a while since I used this feature, but it always worked perfectly until now.

I can't find the 'snipping tool' in my accessories folder. I am taking a Word 2010 class and one of the assignments requires this tool. I have never seen it but it says that it is available in Windows 7-accessories folder. I have Windows 7 but no snipping tool. Can't locate it with search either.
Please advise.
Thank you, Karin

A:[SOLVED] Where is the 'Snipping Tool'?

It should reside here:

%windir%\system32\SnippingTool.exe

You can access it by pasting the above in Start search and then hitting Enter.

If it is missing from Accessories go to the Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off (you will have to be on an admin account to do this) and check the box for Tablet PC Components.

Hi All,

I am running Windows 7 and need to use the program Snipping Tool but can't find it in my Accessories program list.

Do I need to download the program off the web?

Cheers

A:Snipping Tool Not Installed

In your Start menu type Snipping Tool in the search box.

RIGHT click on Snipping Tool when the results are shown.

Choose Send to/Desktop.

If you don't want a desktop shortcut you can add it back to accessories.

Drag the icon to the Start icon and drop it in.

Next open up your Start menu, look in Programs for the icon. Drag and drop it into the Accessories folder. You will probably have to drag it BELOW the Accessories folder icon in order for it be moved.

Or you could pin it to your taskbar which is where I have the Snipping Tool since I use it a lot.

Anyway, managed to locate it and created a shortcut to my desktop but cannot get it fixed into my task bar again!
When I open the dialogue box it does say "pin to start" but that's not the same as task bar, is it?

I want it here

Can anyone help me?

What happens when you enter snip in Start/Search and hit the Enter key?

If nothing then you may have inadvertently turned off the optional Tablet PC features, of which Snipping Tool is one (since 2005).
Click on Start button, and go to Control Panel.
Click on Programs link then Programs and Features.
Click on Turn Windows features on or off link. If User Account Control pops up for confirmation, click on Continue button.
Scroll down the list of features in Windows Features dialog window, tick the check box for Tablet-PC Optional Components to enable and show the Snipping Tool
Then it should show up under Start/All Programs/Accessories.

I've read another thread with the same problem of "no save" but the solution there doesn't apply here. Until last week, I could use the snipping tool and save the results.  I use this a lot - it's a brilliant feature.   Now, when I click on "Save As", nothing happens.   If I click "Close" I am asked if I want to save the snip first.  I click "Yes", the application closes. What I can do is to click "Copy" in snipping tool, and then open Paint Shop Pro and paste into that.   That is an awfully long way round, and I'd prefer to save direct, as I have been doing since I started using the Beta of Win 7 early this year. Less important:  if I ask snipping tool to "send" the snip, it insists on opening MS Outlook, which I don't use.   Is there a way to persuade it to use Thunderbird, my mail client? Windows 7 Home Premium, IBM ThinkPad T43 laptop, nothing unusual.

A:Snipping Tool will not save

I finally managed it. The problem occurs if you don't have My Pictures folder in the place pointed in registry:  "HKEY_CURRENT-USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" I've deleted that folder - I don't need it so that's why save stopped working.

Hi there,

I've encountered this problem when trying to save. The app freezes and error report shows up (that the program has stopped working). --see screen ("V?stři?ky" is Snipping Tool in Czech)

Details of error --see attachments

It's caused by COMCTL32.dll stored in C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft.windows.common-controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.7600.16661_none_fa62ad231704eab7

System restore didn't help. Tried sfc /scannow - reported errors that cannot be fixed. --see attachments (CBS.log - errors in the end of the file)

So I wanted to perform a repair install, but the installation compatibility control failed - couldn't upgrade x64 to x86, but I definitely chose x64 (now running x64) ... weird

Any ideas how to fix it? Snipping Tool or sfc.

Hi geeks and gurus.

I'm using Snipping Tool quite a lot. Just late yesterday evening I had to make some snips. This morning Snipping Tool is no more anywhere to find. I mean, the icon in Quick Launch is suddenly a generic one, clicking it gives the error message "Windows can not find ..."

Start Menu > All Programs > Accesories, where you normally find the Snipping Tool, has all the other shortcuts but Snipping Tool is missing.

I would not like to do a system restore or repair installation only for this. Any ideas?

Mostly I'm wondering how could this happen? I am not one of those users deleting files and programs accindentally, normally I am quite careful.

I am running Vista Home Premium on an HP laptop. It has actually been quite good.
One thing I love is the Snipping Tool. Recently it stopped working. I checked the shortcut, which was pointing to Windows/System32/snippingtool.exe . I went to that directory and the file snippingtool.exe had a size of 0 bytes.

So I went to my brothers' place, where he has the same setup, and copied the file snippingtool.exe (270K) onto a thumbdrive, then deleted the 0K file on my machine and replaced it with his 270K file. However, when I attempt to run the file, nothing happens. I pinned it to the start menu, right-clicked the file in System32 and selected Run as Administrator, nothing happens.

I suspect it needs some other file or files, or some setting in the registry, or something else--Anybody got any ideas what?

Thanks,

Al

Hi:

Whenever I start using Snipping Tool (Vista 64) for the first time after boot, the system gives me this message:

"Snipping Tool is not working right now , .... restart computer...."

Without reboot , I just close this message dialog window and restart the Snipping Tool the second time, it works fine , capture and save images , etc.

...but it is annoying this happens every time after reboot; if I use Snipping Tool the first time after reboot, the same message pops up, subsequent calls to the Snipping Tool works fine.

This pops up all of the sudden. I never got this before , just works even the first time after reboot.

The only thing I did a few days ago was the installation of a network printer . I deleted the printer from the network and uninstalled the driver, didn't help.

I also tried the followings but none of them worked:

1) rolled-back of the registry to the point before installing the printer.
2) used sfc /scannow to fix system files.
3) as some suggested online, killed the Snipping Tool process and restarted it.
4) Used Office diagnostics
5) used virus /rootkit scans
6) replaced it with the original copy of the SnipperTool.exe
7) de-activated firewall.
8) removed Tablet features (thus Snipping tool), etc , then re-activated the Tablet features.

I want to get rid of this annoyance , any help is appreciated.

Regards

If you are trying to snip from an app you will have to use the Prt Screen function.  While on the desktop you can snip anything just like you used to.  Prnt Screen will create a folder in your Pictures folder called Screenshots (or something like that) and each screen shot will be numbered.

I have windows vista home edition with snipping tool. I have been using screenshots taken during online slot gaming to show the company they have a problem, basically the game is doing something its owners say is impossible? An independant adjudicator has advised that if the company wished they could say I have manipulated the screenshots therefore refuse to investigate they also claim no court in the world would take screenshots as irrefutable evidence given that software like photshop is readily available to use for the manipulation of images?
My enquiries have shown me that they are wrong with the later point and if anyone would like to comment on that I would be interested to read those comments but what I'm realy seeeking is "how can I prove my screenshot are genuine and unmanipulated.

A:Snipping tool screenshot authentication

I'm not sure you can prove it yourself - as they say, these images could very easily be manipulated by someone using commonly-available software (to say nothing of someone with access to the very expensive and highly sophisticated products available to professionals and people with money to burn). A screenshot is, after all, just another image file - there's nothing special about it to even prove what machine it came from or when it was done or that you were actually at that site when the "screenshot" was taken (other than what is in the image which could, as they would contend, all be manipulated quite easily and with exceptional quality as well - especially if using state-of-the-art equipment and programs).

I do, however, believe those professional users of top-of-the-line equipment and programs would possibly be able to tell if the image was original or if it had been manipulated (at least if they scanned at a high enough resolution and went pixel-by-pixel over the ENTIRE image) - but I could be wrong about that depending on how the image was taken and at what resolution and using what file format and whether or not that format was converted and a host of other things that surpass my knowledge of what is and isn't possible with state-of-the-art equipment and programs. There would most likely be subtle changes in the individual pixels which they might possibly be able to detect and if none were detected it would likely be an original (but with enough time an... It's been awhile since my last visit...

The last couple of months my computer has been excessively slow to open mp3s and to use the snipping tool. I shrugged it off as 'typical Windows behavior' for awhile, but today the snipping tool froze the system for over a minute several times, and I discovered the average 'opening' time for an mp3 is about 30 seconds.

Some searching on the web lead me to some old (2009) posts about Windows Update KB955430 not installing correctly as the possible culprit. I checked my update history, and sure enough, KB955430 "FAILED" way back when.

I tried downloading the update manually, hoping that it would repair itself but I get "This update does not apply to your system" when I try to run it.

According to the history the failure occured in 2009, the oldest restore point I have is in early 2011 so that's out.

Re-installing Vista... I'll be honest, I have no idea if I even have the discs (it came pre-installed), and if I do, I have no idea where they are.

I could install Windows 7, but would that fix the problem, or would the install be corrupted thanks to KB955430?

Truthfully, I could live with delayed mp3s but I use the snipping tool a lot.
