What happens to a file when you 'save' and 'copy'?

Q: What happens to a file when you 'save' and 'copy'?

Hello everyone here on this lovely forum

I have some questions I really hope you can help me with.

Create (save as) an file (A = 10.10.2015)
Makes changes (save) to the file (B = 20.10.2015)
Copy the file from 20.10.2015 to another harddrive (C = 30.10.2015)

What happens to the original file (A) when I make changes to it and ?save? the changes (B)? Will the original file from 10.10.2015 be deleted or is it saved somewhere else on the computer?

Is there any connection between the file first made 10.10.2015, and the new file that is created with ?copy? (30.10.2015)? There is only a connection between B (20.10.2015) - C (30.10.2015)?

Is there any info on the copied file to the hardrive, about the first file (10.10.2015)? No data, not even a the date (the date is 10.10.2015)?

Should I perceive it this way: When you ?copy? a file to a new hardrive, the copied file ONLY contain the changes last made and the date it was last changed, and there is no connection to the original version when the file was CREATED?

Best regards

A: What happens to a file when you 'save' and 'copy'?

When you save a file. The original is changed and cannot be found again.
When you save as, you have two files the original and the copy.

I have a spreadsheet that is used by a number of users and has a macro built into it to collect updates from several other sheets. I want to add to the macro so that once it has been updated and saved the macro then saves another version of the sheet in a seperate folder with the date and time it was saved as part of the file name.

I have tried

ChDir"H:\Resourcing Teams\Placements\Weekly activity\Archive"
ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs Filename:= _
"H:\ResourcingTeams\Placements\Weekly activity\Archive\" & Now.Day & Now.Month &Now.Year &" .xlsx", _
FileFormat:=xlOpenXMLWorkbook, CreateBackup:=False

But get errors

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

I'm currently in the process of copying files back from the cloud in the exact same location where I had them before and now it says that the file name is too long and prompts to see whether I want to skip the file or not. The error message given does not
give the full file name or the path so it is impossible to see which files were copied successfully or not. This never happened with XP! Then afterwards I found that some of the files with long names did copy successfully whereas others didn't. I find this
to be a very user unfriendly process and I'm totally confused! These are critical files and I'm sure I haven't exceeded 260 characters or whatever. This is soOoO frustrating!!

C

A:file copy error message not sufficient + file name too long will not copy

Hi ,

There is a limit of filename length within Windows Explorer. In the Windows API (with some exceptions discussed in the following paragraphs), the maximum length for a path is MAX_PATH, which
is defined as 260 characters.
The shell and the file system have different requirements. It is possible to create a path with the Windows API that the shell user interface is not able to interpret properly.
This means that your long filename can only be handled at the command prompt level and you cannot drag and drop an illegal length filename within Windows Explorer.

Please simplify your folders and titles.

More information, please check the part of Maximum Path Length Limitation in the link below.

One of my user is having this problem on her Windows XP PC:

Dell GX260 with Windows XP Professional running 512MB RAM, Office XP, Acrobat 5.0

When opening a Word file & edited in Word XP, the user cannot SAVE or use SAVE AS the file, when try to exit out the file, get prompt to either SAVE, CLOSE, or CANCEL the file, at that point it will still not save the file, the only way to exit the file is to hit CLOSE to exit.

I initially thought this might be a Word Xp problem, so I ran the repair tool in Office XP, that did not fix it.

I then uninstalled Office XP, reinstalled Office XP, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then ran the Office update to download the latest patches from MicroSoft, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then UNINSTALLED Acrobat 5.0 from the PC, that FIXED the problem.

WITHOUT Acrobat 5.0 on her PC, the user was now able to open & edit a Word file, and able to SAVE the edited file, also able use SAVE AS to save the file as a new copy.

I then reinstalled Acrobat 5.0 thinking the previous copy of Acrobat 5.0 on the PC might be corrupted, as soon as Acrobat 5.0 was back on the PC, the same problem with the SAVE feature came back in Word XP.

I then installed the patch update for Acrobat 5.0, that did not fix the problem.

At this point, I am out of clues on how to fix it....The user tried Acrobat 6.0 before on the same PC, but decided to reverse back to Acrobat 5.0 because of format problem with 6.0.......so Acrobat 6.0 is no... Read more

With regard to clearing lists of [recently opened and/or saved] file names in Windows file dialog boxes, Orbital Shark had described the following procedure (from his 01 Nov., '10 post-) How to Clear This Dialog Box ? :

"If you want to selectively clear the Common Dialog file names MRU, you need to delete these two registry keys manually:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ LastVisitedPidlMRU

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ OpenSavePidlMRU"

My question is as follows (and it is probably a silly one, therefore please bear with me and thank you):

Is the prescribed procedure to delete the *actual keys* ("LastVisitedPidlMRU" & "OpenSavePidlMRU"), or instead to delete the *contents* of those keys? i.e.: Should I select/highlight the key within the left panel of the Regisgtry Editor, and then select delete; or should I select/highlight the key within the left panel, and then select/highlight in the right panel all the contents of that respective key, and then delete all those contents (not the actual key itself) indicated in the right panel?

Thanks much for your patience and for your help! Win

A:Residual File Names in Save/Save As Dialog Boxes

Hello Windough, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Deleting those actual keys would work best. If you like, the tutorial below will help you do this automatically instead of having to manually do it in regedit.Common Dialog Boxes - Clear Dropdown List of Recent Files History
In addition, you might look at this tutorial if you do not want to have this history kept.Common Dialog Boxes - Enable or Disable Dropdown List of Recent Files

Firstly, my employee's are running into a problem where they cant save their files because the file is "in use" according to windows 7.

What i've narrowed it down to is the fact that windows uses the files to display details or even a preview of the file whether it be a thumbnail or a window pane preview of the file or even simple details barring it from saving the file after it is opened, edited, and ready to be saved.

I have disabled all the obvious frills that might be conflicting such as: "file previews, show thumbnails etc." just cant quite get this resolved.

Also, windows 7 and its short term memory loss wont allow some of my employees to save their favorite folder views (I understand that windows 7 tried to implement a more functional window mode, allowing users to have multiple view for their different folders) but the "pick one and stick with it option" of "Apply to all folders" the obvious approach doesnt work. Or merely works for a few days then reverts. I've seen regedits about changing the "bag size" and such but that looks a little more involved than i want to get with the registry, also potentially affecting something in the process.

Any tips?

I'm trying to copy a VHD (22g, dynamic I think...)

I tried richcopy. It says copy started, but then stops....

I saw someone mention xcopy /j, to achieve the unbuffered I/O perf. you get with richcopy...

it's running, but no indication as to how long it takes (EDIT: just finished, > 10 mins),

what's the syntax for single files?

Can't you just paste the path into the source?

(starts, and stops... any logs?)

A:how do I copy a BIG single file (using richcopy?) big file copy

Use this command if the VHD is sitting on C:

robocopy "C:\Users\yourName\VHD Folder" "S:\Storage Folder" *.* /COPY:DAT /E

Change yourname and replace VHD Folder with the name of the folder where the VHD resides. S:\Storage Folder is where you want to store it.

I have a corrupted system on my boot drive (C) I do not wish to format this large drive and start over. I am wondering if I copy the registry to an external drive, install and format a new system drive, and then copy the saved registry and my programs from the old C drive (The drive is okay, it simply has some bad system files on it) to the new C drive would this work??

I would save the registry from the new drive before copying the old one over in case this does not work. I ask this as a way to get around reinstalling all my software from CD's again or many which are not on CD's but are downloaded from the internet.

I have never run across this problem before. There is a picture on the net that a tried to copy & save, but only 1/2 of it shows up.

The picture is on a two tone background. I right click on "Save picture as", and continue saving as jpg. When I open the picture in my Photo Shop, the bottom 1" of the picture has been cut off.

How can this be remedied?

A:Copy & Save Picture As

There is probably a simple solution, but I've got a complicated one for you. Try taking a sreenshot, paste it in your paint program, then cut the picture and then 'save as'. I know. I know. Seems like there ought to be a simplier, easier way....and there probably is, but I can't think of it now.

I have a acer laptop.I don't have any blank dvds & am not buying any.I want to know how I save a copy of the PQservice to a external HDD that is just used for backing up files.
Then if I ever decide to use the PQservice or sell the laptop & put it back in the laptop's HDD.How would I do that?

I want to find out how to do this as soon as possible.Because I am going to DBAN the HDD clean. Then reinstall windows 7 on it.Same os version laptop runs(home premium 64b).It's just the OS that has nothing extra, none of that silly crap(games etc.) that the manufacturers throw in.I want to do this to save some GBs on the HDD.
The external is in NTFS.I think the PQservice is fat32 or 64(OS in the laptop is 64bit).
Can I just create a new partition on the external, put how many bytes needed & format it to fat32?And still keep the other/original partition in NTFS?
I know DBAN may seem overkill but, laptop was bought off someone & they left it how they had it.Bunch of junk in it.

A:How do I save a copy of PQservice to a external HDD?

It seems like the easiest way to do this would be to image the drive (or at least that one partition). Then the drive image can be stored on anything like a regular file. You would have to image it back to use it if you needed to use it. I believe that those things are usually required to be bootable so merely trying to copy the partition contents may not work by itself.

However, If you just want to copy the partition files then I don't think it matters that the original partition is fat32. Somtimes the recovery software can be run from windows without needing to be booted directly. In that case the file system formatting does not matter. But to be safe, I'd do a full partition copy so you get the formatting and the bootability saved as well as the files themselves.

Hi, I think many has this problem as I found it in other forums without clear response. Sometimes my Internet Explorer 9 does not like Adobe Reader 9. So I open a document pdf which has no security issue, and I just click on the save a copy icon. The icon responds with a virtual click. And that's it. Does not appear the radiobox where I can chose where and how to save. Nothing happens. And I can't find the downloaded pdf in any temporary folders either (I can index system folders and do a search there). So I have to go to another computer where I do the same in Firefox and it works, I can save the pdf file. But this is not OK that I have to use someone else's computer. I just wonder why these intelligent guys who create IE and AR can not make something that works? And since years this problem has been existing. Any idea how to patch it? Cheers and happy new year !

A:Save a copy of a PDF document open in IE9 does not do anything

In IE9, enable the classic menu-bar which is disabled by default.

Now when you open a PDF in IE9 via the Adobe Reader plugin, just click File >> Save as. It will save it as a PDF file with a default filename.

I've been backing up my computer so as to do a complete recovery. All of a sudden while sending pictures to a flash drive everything seemed to go OK. I can see the pictures transfer to the drive, close the drive and then go back in and everything is still there. If I properly eject the drive, remove it, then place it back in, all the files I transfered are now gone. There are other files on the drive that are still there but what I now add are totally gone. There's 27gb free out of a 32 gb flash drive. I also previously tried to copy to a 128gb flash drive and whatever I copied turned into weird characters from the bottom up while I watch it and I can't open the files nor delette them. I've rebooted and everything is still the same. Any ideas?

A:Can't copy and save to flash drive

Your 32GB and 128 GB pen drives may be fake drives.

Try those on another PC and if the same things happen, no doubt about those being fake.

You may also tell us the model/make/ manufacturer of those pendrives, where you bought those and at what price?

Did you buy those because those came at a throw-away price?

Please copy whatever you have on those drives to another location and test those with H2testw.

This used to not happen but now when I turn on either one a copy of messages has been left on the server despite
the fact that I don't have that option checked and of course that results in many messages downloaded that I have no further use for.

hi all,

Going wind7 soon. Want to copy folder lists and files/contents in window explorer and print them out, then compare with the folders etc on my external HD backup to make sure whats there and if I need to save anything else.

Is there a software that will do this, or way to copy/paste or something similar?

suppose there could be print screens or snip tools but that sounds like a lot of extra work.

thanks,

A:copy/save & print folders lists?

Well, it's probably not the easiest way to do it, but you can go to any Windows Explorer list in Windows Explorer and do a Prt Sc (or in my case Fn key + Prt Sc). Then paste the image into WordPad and save it as a Word doc. Note though, that when you do this step, it appears to "save" in Rich Text Format, but when you try to open the Word doc, you may have to do a Save as, into RTF again.
Then, when you go back into Windows Explorer to access the file, strangely, the image you printed is saved as a folder, and within the folder is the Word doc in which the image is actually printed.

How I can download email content on my laptop. I don't have printer. I want to save email message on desktop

A:How to copy, save, print email message content on desktop

Which email package are you using; how do you access your emails?Meanwhile... Presuming you can access and read the content OK..., simply highlight, select/copy the content to a Word document or other similar text application. Give a it a suitable name save it either to the desktop - better still to a specific folder... - and you're done.Incidentally I wouldn't dump loads of email files (or otherwise) onto the desktop itself; rather create a folder within "MyDocuments folder" and store them all there. The less you have on your desktop itself the better; less clutter and also doesn't use up RAM resources either... Although nowadays RAM aspect is likely less an issue than in the distant days of low/small RAM installations.

I don't know what on earth happens to my computer. First, this afternoon my computer suddenly slows down A LOT...like for example when I try to open the Windows Media Player it can't open and a message says it's due to low memory...when I was not using any other programs...and then everything else is slow...I can print articles though. Later I restart the computer but it stays the same. Then after some time strangely it gets back to normal by itself and I thought everything's over.
But then tonight when I turn on the computer the problem comes back again. Can't open some high-memory programs...even the Kerio firewall program disappears by itself! In addition, I find that all of a sudden I can't use the cut/copy/paste function on virtually any program that has that function...Word, Notepad, Windows. I was particularly frustrated as I was doing some assignment that becomes quite inconvenient without those functions. And the Edit/Save function on the Internet window was also blocked. ("Luckily" the Save function in Word was not blocked.) Could someone suggest what has happened? Thanks a lot.

A month or two ago I started noticing that when I try to save files to HDD from Opera it takes about 4 seconds for the (explorer) file menu to appear and let me save it.

Now I noticed the same in Subtitle Workshop and Irfanview, only that in these it takes even longer, like 7 seconds, for the load file menu to appear after I click on the "open file" icon.

Some other programs, like VLC and Winamp, don't have this problem.

Any clues?

Using Win 7 64bit, BTW. Everything updated.

I have searched up and down and around the web for a fix for this with no luck.
Hope I am posting this in the correct place..

Whenever I request a "File|Open" or "File|Save" from any application, the
mini-Windows-Explorer dialog box that opens freezes and hangs the entire
application. Happens with almost all applications. Not limited to just Microsoft programs.
It does not matter if I like change the download folder or if I rt click always the same.

Back when it was under warranty Hp tells me to just restore to original settings. I hate to do that. But I am about to see that this might be the only fix for it. (But I am hoping not.)

I think it started a long time ago when I was changing the USB ports I used for my external Hard drive and it changed drive letter. (maybe maybe not.. just seems I remember that being something that had happened when I first recall things hanging...) anyway I have all drives in the place I want them now and this issue still happens even if I dont have that external drive plugged in.

If I need to post more info please just let me know.
Thanks so much.
Appreciate the help...

I'm in the process of repair/recovery of my machine (Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2). I'm following exactly the instructions in: http://attachments.techguy.org/attac...chmentid=62075, but a problem has developed. The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed, no? Or is there a way out somehow?

Thanks to anyone who's been there and can help...

BTW I have the XP installation disk that came with, and a diagnostics disk which I have not yet run.

A:Blue Screen: Registry File Failure; can't copy corrupted file to tmp directory

Never mind, I had it wrong--didn't read the document referred to above carefully enough. The procedure worked like a charm, and the document is very easy to read and entertaining to boot! (pun intended).

The document describes a procedure that closely follows a Microsoft KB document (which I now can't find) but does not contain any warning regarding whether the OS is an OEM (original equipment manufacture) install or not. The Microsoft doc says not to use the procedure on an OEM-installed OS, but I just did it on my Dell, so that warning seems to be incorrect.

Many many thanks for the help provided by this document and this site.

Hi,
I would like to create a .bat to copy files from source folder to destination folder.
Some files in source folder already exist in destination folder (Same name)
What I would like is that files existing in destination folder to be rename to f.eks filename_BAK.extension.
Eksampel.:
Source folder include. FileOne.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt
Destination folder include. FileOne.asp - (NO FileTwo) - FileTree.txt
Result. FileOne.asp (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileOne_BAK.asp) - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileTree_BAK.txt)
Now in desination folder.: FileOne.asp - FileOne_BAK.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt - FileTree_BAK.txt
Files in source folder are placed in different folders, but in same structure in destination.

Kind regards

I cannot copy or paste jpeg files from my computer to my SD 2GB cards. Also, I get this msg when I try to print jpeg files. Using Adobe Elements I am able to archive these files. Oddly enough I can attach and send these jpeg files via email. Prior to August '08 was able to do these tasks without a problem. I suspect that there is a software compatibility problem since this problem came on suddenly (maybe iTunes?). No problems importing jpeg files from SD cards. I've looked at several sites on the internet but none seem to have the right solution for my problem. THANKS for any help that you can provide! -Stu

A:Error copying file or folder; cannot copy img the directory or file cannot be created

This has caught me more than once.

The problem is a limitation on the number of files and folders allowed in the root folder of a FAT16 file system (as for a memory card) of 512. (Note, this number is reduced much further if longer file names than 8 characters are used, as most people will want to).

When transferring the files onto the card, new files will be rejected when you hit this limit.

So keep your files in separate folders, so they are not all in the root folder.

For files and folders in root it might be worth keeping your filenames under 8 characters in length so you can use the full 512 files on root folder.

Hi All
I have a rather large file system with lots of folders & subfolders. When I want to save previously on Xp operating system I'd search in explorer open the folder I want then copy the address (e.g c:\customer records\client name\job address).
In windows 7, when I copy the folder address i get this "search-ms:displayname=Search%20Results%20in%20electronic%20files&crumb=location:S%3A%5CSEQ%5C011_Estimating %5Celectronic%20files\CHERMSIDE , 17 smith ST"

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

Hi Guys,

I want to make one batch file which daily copies yesterday's files from one folder & paste it to another folder.

I.e.
C:/111 folder has following files.
1.zip had yesterday's date
2.zip had yesterday's date
3.zip had last sunday's date

now, when i will run batch file today, it only copies 1.zip & 2.zip & move to another folder C:/222

So C:/222 contains following
1.zip had yesterday's date
2.zip had yesterday's date

Please note , i have to run this batch file daily which should not require any changes.

When I use the XCopy command in Windows 2000, I can copy any file I like; however, when I use copy-and-paste or drag-and-drop in either Windows Explorer or PowerDesk, I get the following error:

Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read from the Source File or Disk

I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and came up with only one article, Q224378. This article seems not to apply to my situation because it applies to Windows 2000 Server. I am running Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2. I did attempt to install the fix that article Q224378 suggested anyway; but, I got an error message that I was attempting to upgrade a program that didn't exist on my system.

I have also learned that this error applies when copying from either of my SCSI CD-ROM drives, not when copying from hard disks or floppies.

Any Suggestions?

I have Windows XP-Pro SP2 installed on a P4 1.8GHz CPU with 768MB RAM

I would like a script that opens a commamd window and calls for a file (icon file) to be copied to a specific folder on 5 different drives. I would like to be able to either paste in the file path or drag and drop the file onto the command window. The icon file will always come from the same folder "C:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders" and be copied, sometimes replacing a file with the same name, to these 5 folders:

"W:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"X:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"W:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"N:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"D:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

I apologize if I am using incorrect terms. I don't know if a batch file could do this or if it would have to be done with vbs. I would appreciate the help. I know nothing about writng vbs script and only a little about writing batch files.

Have you made sure that the card formatted to work in the device? That, or the card being bad, would the be the only reasons it won't allow you to just copy and paste.

If the card is from a "Phone" or a "Tablet" I would suggest putting it back in the device it came from, which it is formatted to, and then plugging that device into the laptop via USB. That should resolve the problem.

I have the game 'Crysis' on two backup DVD's. I had to put the installation files in a .rar and split them so I could back it up (I downloaded the game digitally from EA)

So when I insert disk 1 and try to copy 'Crysis.part1.rar' to D:/Crysis (D: is my data drive, C: is strictly the OS and maybe 2 or 3 applications installed on it) it copies most of it, but when it gets to '5 seconds remaining' it comes up with this error. It takes like 6 minutes to copy it and then it errors out when it's almost done! I've tried 3 times and the error popped up every time. The disk is spotless... I mean it looks brand new. Not even a speck of dust or any smudges at all.

Why am I getting this error?? I don't know what to do! If I can't copy it I'll have to redownload the entire 6gb installation package from EA, which will take probably 4-5 hours.

Structure:
• I have a network directory that stores photos of individuals in jpg format. There may be only 2 pics of each person, or there may be 7 pics.
• Each persons pics are stored in a randomly named directory / subdirectory. dont have any control over the original program, it's just the way it was written, does not seem to follow any logical pattern, possibly a HEX naming structure based off the date & time, who knows (I will include a sample directory tree at the end of the post).
• Included within each of these created directories, along with the pictures, is a standard text file (filename "B.TXT") which includes the date the picture was taken, the persons name, and other information.
• Each time a person comes in and their picture is taken, the program: (i) creates the random directory (ii) stores the pics (iii) creates the "B.TXT" file with the persons information (iv) generates several other program specific files that I have no need for.
• The program names each of the pictures with the exact same names, which is why they are stored in different directories, so they will not overwrite. The retention period on each individuals directory, pics and files is approximately 40 days.

I'm currently using Richcopy to move about 4TB worth of data from our colo facility (1000 miles away) to our office. And that data also gets routed overseas first before coming back (don't ask). Needless to say, connectivity while not bad, could be better.

The small files are zooming right along, the issue is the larger files (the ones that are hundreds of MB or even several GB).

From time to time, I briefly lose network connectivity for a second or two, when that happens, the files currently being copied abort and once connectivity is restored, Richcopy just moves on to the next files. So when Richcopy advertises that it 'resumes', it seems it is talking about resuming a file copy queue, and not resuming partially copied files. Those have to start over from the beginning.

Is there a tool similar to Richcopy with the functionality I'm looking for?

Thanks!

I have XP SP3. I run avast and then malwarebytes once a week. I also have FF 4 and IE 8. Lately I've been getting a box that pops up on some sites (especially ebay and etsy) that either ask me to save the file to a disk or cancel. If I hit cancel and then try it again, everything is fine. Examples are below: (error, type of file and website)

All_bargains.php
php file

EbayISAPI.dll
dll file
http://myebay.com
I only get these in FF and not IE. I noticed it usually seems to happen when I click on a picture or the link next to the pictue. ( but that seems to be the basis of ebay and etsy) I did notice that if I'm in FF--I go to tools-option and then application--the following say save to a disc(always ask) beside it: dll file, irc, ircs and webcal

Is there something I need to download or what program do I assign to these items. I'm so confused. I've looked everywhere for an answer. Please help.

In Excel 2010, I opened a Read-only file, made a lot of changes, and tried to File-Save As.

Nothing happens.

A web-search I got some info, maybe the MS Office update tool was recently installed? Not in my case.

go to explorer, the read-only file and check off Read-only in Properties. Can't, its not saved to anything, and Excel gives a message the file is read-only, please save under a new file name.

I tried File Save As, but nothing happens, no dialog box to input a new file name.

BTW, this is a large excel file, around 27 MB.

A:Excel file read-only, but can't File-Save as

Offhand, wondering if the Save As dialog box is opening behind the Excel program window. Maybe reducing the size of the excel window, then trying save as again? (it may be visible if that is happening) Also a possibility is to just try Save. That should produce a message and also offer the opportunity to Save As. Any additional info you can acquire will be helpful for resolving this.

Hi there,

Have you ever seen that File|Open and File|Save As does not work at all for any application? Basically nothing happens, the dialog never opens. I have tried in several browsers, Word, Visual Studio ... nothing. The common dialog to handle files never opens and as a result I can not do more "complex" things like choosing a file to upload, adding a reference in a Visual Studio project.

I have googled the web with no results. Any clues? I have a fairly new laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate x64bits. Antivirus (Microsoft Security Essentials) says the system is clean. I have rebooted several times with no luck either.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

The file is corrupted or unreadable." Each box has a different sys32 file, including ..em32\00004509 and ..em32\0000767d. I've ran spybot and SUPERAntiSpyware, both removed a whole load of crap on the laptop but not the damn virus im after! Also ran Security Check: Results of screen317's Security Check version 0.99.24 Windows 7 x64 (UAC is enabled) Internet Explorer 8 Out of date! `````````````````````````````` Antivirus/Firewall Check: Windows Firewall Enabled! *******NO COMBO FIX LOG IS ATTACHED***********First, thank you for what you people do here. I suddenly began receiving the error "Windows - Delayed Write Failed. (Failed to save all the components for the file \System32\0000390c. The file is corrupted or unreadable. This error may be caused by a PC hardware problem)In addition, my desktop went black and lost my desktop icons. A box popped up saying I needed to purchase some time of computer fix. Researching the problem, I came across a forum that suggested running ComboFix from your site, which I did. After running it, I found the warning not to run it unless specifically instructed to. In any event, I did run it and currently my desktop icons are back, however my desktop background is still black and I have a new icon on my desktop that is a red circle with a white X on it. Please let me know what else I should do, if anything. I have not deleted ComboFix.exe from my computer or performed any other tasks. And again, thank you for what you do. Warmest regards

It seems that any time I edit a photo in Windows 10 Photos (i.e. crop, filters, etc.), then save a copy of the edited photo, Windows 10 automatically reduces the resolution of my photo. This is causing an issue when I then try to print the edited photos or use them in photo books. Is there a way to save the edited images in the same high resolution as the original photo?

Your browser should have a setting through which you can control the download location.

In Firefox, it's at tools/options/general.

About a week ago, I started having issues saving excel spreadsheets. If I try to save them, I get the message that file is currently in use, try again later. I can rename the file and save it, but when I open the new file again and try to save that, I get the same message again. No one else is using the files and I have done the following to try and resolve this:
- deleted my profile on my primary Windows XP SP3 PC
- went to a Windows 7 PC with the same results.
- Ran Process Explorer to see which service has the file in use and got the message non-existent process

This only appears to be happening in Excel 2007, Word and PowerPoint are fine and no other users are reporting this issue. Has anyone else seen this happen?

Thanks for your help!!

Hi all,
This is a great board-- I have received a lot of help from here!
This is my next project.
Open the attached file and, on the right of the form, there are six cells with text.
I need to concatenate these with one space in between each one, then copy the group of them and use the clipboard to paste so I can open the "save as" dialog box and paste it as the filename. We need this in our environment to be able to create the file name quickly, paste it and save the file.
I want to be able to do this with a button that activates a macro.
You can see the button on the right side when you open the file. The macro assigned to it called "createfilename". The code is in module 1.
I got it started, but I know it needs help.
Thanks!

Good day all

Learner here, reasonably OK with Excel, well some of it, but struggling with VBA.

I have a Excel 2013 workbook with 96 worksheets in it. Each sheet records hours worked on projects in that week and is summarised. Using VBA I want to copy each sheets summary range, BH3: BI390, to a collection sheet and sum as I do so, i.e. copy, paste special add, them to get a record of hours worked to date on the projects.

There are four other sheets which I do not want to analyise and I think I know how to exclude them.

I realise I can do this using 3D formula but the number of sheets increase by one each week and I don't believe that 3D formulas can accommodate this whereas I understand VBA can?.

I have spent a couple of days searching various forums about this and cannot find an answer. It seems to me it ought to be a relatively simple operation but then what do I know.

I have tried recording a macro to do a similar thing, copy past special and add, on one sheet and then adapting to suit with no success.

Following is the code I tried following this approach, don't laugh.
Code:
Sub ConsolSheets()
Dim ws As Worksheet

Application.ScreenUpdating = False
Sheets("Consolidate").Activate

For Each ws In Worksheets
If ws.Name <> "Master" And ws.Name <> "Log" And ws.Name <> "Total Summary" And ws.Name <> "Consolidate" Then
Application.CutCopy... Read more

Hi all

Just a stupid little problem with W7 I noticed which is VERY confusing but simple to fix.

I changed via the dialog the TEXT SIZE via the screen resolution in the control panel to CUSTOM SIZE.

With one of the newer "Cinema" or Very Wide screen (1680 X 900) displays after I'd increased the text size to over 160 % I didn't get the possibility to SAVE any documents any more via the SAVE AS button. The SAVE dialog would appear but the SAVE button was missing.

The effect was noticed in Office 2007 (all programs) Notepad etc etc.

Seems to be a Windows fault as this should not be allowed to happen.

on more traditional "Squarer" type monitors -- no problem.

I couldn't find the answer by googling but a bit of "trial and Error" fixed the problem.

I cannot save a PDF file format from an all-in one printer model HP F4400 it doesn't give me the option. it is an old printer

A:cannot save pdf file

I assume you mean the scanning function of the F4400, not the printing function? You cannot save a scan as a PDF file?Did this printer use to allow you to save scans as PDF files? If yes, then try re-installing the HP software for the F4400 from the supplied HP installation CD or download from HP website. If this printer has never given you the option of saving scans as PDF files, then the printer software does not support that option. There is an excellent scanning software which works with most USB scanners and it is called VueScan. It allows you to scan and save as a PDF file: http://www.hamrick.com/You can try it for free to make sure it supports your scanner. If you want to keep using it, registration costs approx $30 (US Dollars). message edited by phil22

Hi, First post. Thanks for having me.

I was unable to start Windows XP and was in a sort of start-up loop. I reinstalled Windows and I have had to start again from scratch. Everything seems to be working OK but when I start up each day I get messages to say that certain files have been lost due to a hardware or network failure and to save these files elsewhere.
The files are :
C:\Windows\system32\config\SysEvent.Evt
C:\$Mft
C:\Windows\repair

How can I save or recover these files?

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks, teddyboy2.

A:Save file?

When you re-installed Windows was it a "Clean install"

A clean install of XP is done by deleting then re-creating the C: partition during setup.

A clean Install is the best way to re-install windows, If you did not do it this way, start over and do a clean install.

Hi!
I am using IE 7 and currently on Windows Vista Home Basic. When I try to save files (.pdf,.ps,etc.), say to the Desktop, IE starts downloading the file but after the download is completed, the file is not present in the specified location. Whe I try searching for the file, an error is reported saying 'Windows is searching for the file, to locate the file yourself, click Browse'. I'm able to save .mht files and .txt files but only if I open them in a new tab and click 'Save As'.
Maybe it's a UAC problem but I don't know how I can correct the same (I am the Administrator).

A:save my file

If you have a large file that is that important or irreplaceable to you, you really need to back it up on a CD-R/DVD-R or some other reliable media or both.

You should not be relying solely on your computer to keep that file safe for a number of years because too many things can happen during that time, such as the hard drive dying.

I was reading a PSP tutorial and (in the process of learning about textures) learned about making my own texture files, which are saved as bitmaps. In the texture folder.

I thought what I was doing was more of a gradient. Which I could then use with text. So, I tried saving it as that, but there is no way that I can see (in PSP) to do this.

I looked at the other gradient files and they are jgd extension. I've been looking in google (and in search here) and all I can find is how to put a jgd file IN the gradient folder. Not how to get it to jgd. I looked in the file association option in preferences (PSP7) and have everything checked, except gif (which I leave unchecked because a lot are animations and I want Animation shop to open them).

You'd think PSP would have a way to save a file that they use and apparently is unique to them (the extension)

But then the PSP tutorial said it was made using Adobe Photoshop and Page Maker

I probably won't be making a lot of gradient files of my own, just trying to learn all I can as I go along....

Greetings!

My WinXP system was infected with viruses several times like Agobot, I-Worm/Plexus, etc. and the AVG antivirus safely healed all those viruses in the system.

Yesterday, I ran the AVG and found nothing. But the "Wmon32.exe" and "IEXPLORES.exe" files were found also listed in the Startup Tab under the System Configuration Utility. Based on the Trendmicro website, the "Wmon32.exe" was a Worm/Agobot.VL file so, I decided to remove the two files in the registry through safe mode.

I also ran HijackThis program to make it sure that the system is now free from those annoying files but I do not know how to interpret and read the scanned and saved log file.

Okay, long story short....when I went to save picture files off my camera the file names would match previous files in that folder. It would pop up a copy over box, clicking no it would automatically rename the file and save it. I do't know exactely what may have happened, but now I must manually enter a file name. I am getting rather annoyed as I use the same folder for each month, and was quite content with it's easy flow prior too.

Window 7, Aspire netbook, standard windows photo tools...

I get this issue with internet image saves as well, I imagine it's some internal system setting that got changed. I checked my options in folder settings, and the the browser settings. I don't know where else to look, or other applications that might help. I tried a restore point but that also failled to reset how it use to be.
