i did the steps in this link because i thought its a similair problem :

Startup Repair Infinite Loop Recovery

When my PC automatically updated to Win 10 all went smoothly, it did not ask me for a Microsoft account and always showed my name on the start up /welcome screen (the one with for squares). We needed no password to access the PC and anyone in the family could use it. Last week my daughter was looking at some photos on the PC and decided to 'share' some with her sister. To do this she had to log into her own Microsoft account. Now our PC has changed, it shows my daughter's name as Administrator and we have to use her personal password to access the PC. Why has this happened and can I get back to how it was before - no access password and my name as Administrstor?

Good Morning,

I've searched around but can't really find any details on this;

I girlfriend has a Dell desktop, running XP SP2 - It has no previous problems but was out of use for around 6 months and so she somehow forgot her password to log on.

To get around this I booted into Safe Mode and changed the password through the Administrator account which I've done a dozen times before without issues. I restarted and then got the error:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

At which point it keeps rebooting itself - it will not start in safe mode and will not go back to the last good configuation (although I've rarely seen this work sucessfully anyway).

I'm hoping I can just do a repair of the registry files via the XP disc, however what sort of success rate am I looking at as there are files she really needs to get hold of.

Secondly, I took out the hard drive (XP SP2) of an older system I have at home in the hope of making this the master drive and slaving the corrupt drive and try to pull the required files this way, I've obviously changed the boot sequence to boot from this new drive - I get the the XP loading bar screen, where it just restarts itself again.
I've tried all the combinations of running just this drive, but with the same results - just seems a little odd that I wouldn't boot from a completely different drive (this drive is known to be working correctly).

Both drives are... Read more

The Microsoft option is the easiest as long as you have an XP CD.

I recentlly had a problem with my PC where when i turned it on the HDD light would just stay on and nothing would start or come up on screen (no beeps but all fans started). I purchased a new CPU (same model and speeds) to see if that was the problem and it still did it so i got a new motherboard (same model) and again still nothing. I changed the power supply with another i have on a PC i KNOW works and its STILL the same. I even used the power switch out of the other PC as well as trying with no ram and different ram but STILL the same problem. I dont understand how that can be possible when EVER part is different from that of what is in the computer. No HDD or sata or IDE drives were connected, no cards or anything but still the thing wont start.

New/different motherboard
New/different CPU
Different Ram
Different case & power switch
NO other cards or devices

So WHY is there STILL the same problem ????????

The stats of the PC are as follows

AMD Sempron 3000+
Asus K8V-VM Motherboard
1GB DDR400 Ram

Any help would be VERY much appreciated because i am COMPLETELY stumped on what the problem is when ALL the parts are different and i cant afford to be spending any more money on the system.

Thank You

Hello! My MOBO is Asrock 980DE3/u3s3 and I had the kingston value ram ddr3 4 GB 1600mhz up until now . I recently purchased a Kingston hyper x savage 16GB DDR3 1600 mhz dual channel kit . I installed them and the monitor was in standby and would not start . The pc seemed to be working just fine , but the monitor was the issue. I tried using my old RAMs but I would get the same thing now . The weird thing is that it worked just fine with a 3rd ram memory, a kingmax 2 gb ddr 3 , 1600 mhz single channel . Now I am just getting the 3 beeps with the Hyper X Savage . All parts have warranty . Which one should I exchange ?

Hey all, after using AlienwareGUI for a while to swap to a theme I uninstalled it after a while. The result made the IE icon on the start menu the IE6 icon. I've gone to the quick launch IE icon and changing that icon back to IE7 but it still didn't fix the start menu one. Anyone know how to get it back?

And yeah, doesn't look like much of a problem but I go nuts about it. Probably because im a perfectionist and every other IE icon has the IE7 one. <_<

Hello Erind. It sounds like your System Repair is going to an internal ram disk. You might see if this tutorial helps solve your problems. When you get to Step 11 it goes into more detail about using the "X:\" special provision of the command prompt.

Startup Repair Infinite Loop Recovery

As the tutorial says in the beginning, "the instructions presented within this tutorial must be followed correctly, or you can damage your Windows 7 installation even further." Please keep us informed of your progress.

maybe someone has the knowledge and time to try to help me with my problem. I had problems with my laptop fujitsu siemens amilo pro v2060 - the lcd worked just at some angles when opened, I sent it for a repair, and finally I got it back, they changed the connector wire and then ...the windowsXP doesn't start.

Here is what I see

here I have several options, but not one works..also not to start windows with last known working settings, when I click some options I can see windows logo for one sec and then darkness and this..

diagnostic screen of fujitsu siemens...
I dont know if this menus can help me to get my windowsxp back..

and when I walk throug I see also this ..but I don't have knowledge to use this commands: boot and such things

I am afraid that I lost windowsXP and all of my data - if I tell more exact..I send my gf's laptop on repair...and now I probably ruined everything - wish I will not be at late night news . If someone has knowledge to help me..thank you.

A:Solved: windows will not start up after lcd connector was changed :(

Contact the repair place that did the repairs and get a return authorization and send or take it back for them to get the job done right. If they turned on the computer after making the change they did they would have seen that it does not boot up. This is called warranty work.

I have the following problem: Two days ago while browsing a pop-up window caused my Internet Explorer to freeze. Since I was almost done browsing I chose to shut down the PC altogether and only a few hours later realized I had caught some kind of spyware or virus:
Whenever I boot IE is opened automatically.
The startpage was changed to some kind of websearch with different entries already given (and named "about: blank".
Whenever I changed that into my standard it was changed back as soon as I closed the IE and at every reboot. Also at one point when I was online something should have been downloaded, but I just canceled that request, not having a closer look at what that may have been.

Since then I took the following actions:
manually looked for files that had been added to my system at the time of that frozen IE. I found some and moved them to a different folder.
They were: javaqh32.exe, oirqw.txt, netis.dll, d3ue32.exe in the C:\WinNT folder, mswb32.dll, yqarj.dll, wmaa.dll, sdkud.exe, sysnk.exe, syspj32.exe in the C:\WinNT\System32 Folder. Since I manually moved them I thought I?d better mention them in case your hijackthis will overlook them.
I remember that javaqh32 was in the loaded processes, as well as d3ue32 and I managed to get them out of there and to different folders by starting my system under DOS and move them then.
After that I also updated my Adaware (was 6.0, but I also downloaded your named SE 1.06 version today), updated it and run i... Read more

A:automatic IE start and startup page changed

Greetings, and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Right click on this link and choose Save As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards.

Hiya guys,
I've just done a fresh install of Windows 10 on a new build.
I noticed there are a couple of bits I can't seem to get back to how they were before, last time it was the free upgrade from win7, this time it was a clean install via windows 10 media creation tool.

I've attached a screenshot of how my start menu looks now, before reinstalling I had the power, settings and file explorer at the bottom of the start menu as a list, along with 'all apps', which would open the A-Z list of apps.
As you can see now, the power etc are now icons on the left, with all the apps as a permanent presence next to them.

It's not a huge issue, but something that's frustrating me that I can't figure out how to change it back, I don't launch apps from the A-Z so i'd rather not have it there.

Has this changed in a recent update or something? My PC was without internet for a few months until today so maybe I missed a change.

I have checked and I have the latest build of windows.

Thanks, Mark.

I made a change to my start-up menu and as a result, the sound no longer works, I can no longer get on the internet, when I go into Device Manager, its empty. I tried system restore. It showed previous dates I could revert back to, but I wanted something more recent, so I went into "create a restore point" to set my own date and it set the date to the current date (at which everything is lost) and got rid of everything previous to that, so now I can't use that either. I tried using my memory stick to download files to the computer, but it doesn't recognize the stick in My Computer. What's funny is that when I use Malwarebytes, "H:\" drive shows up to be scanned. Also, I can backup Quickbooks because it too recognizes my memory stick. I am computer ignorant (as my name implies) so if I need to provide any more info, let me know. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi guys, is it possible to change the colour of the white start button in Window 8.1?

My screen is suffering from screen burn because of the bright start button and I'm thinking it would be less severe if the button was a darker colour.

I've looked through all personalisations and everything but I can't find a way.

The button does change to black though when "High Contrast White" is selected in the personalisations, but I can't find a way other than that to do it

I don't think it's possible to change the color other than what you found. There may be some 3rd party app to do so. I know of none.

Thank you in advance to anyone who is willing and able to guide me through a possible virus. As the title states, my computer has begun acting strangely and I fear it is infected.
Normally, my start up page is Google, when I use my Chrome browser, however, after searching and downloading a movie, things began to get weird. My computer is acting generally slow, and suddenly my start up browser has changed to Yahoo. I fear these are signs of a virus and I would like to take care of this situation before things get worse.
I am fairly inexperienced with virus removal, and I am not sure how to best approach such a vague situation. I ran a Trend Micro Titanium    internet Security, but no threats appeared. I would like to go for a general thorough examination of my computer.
I am using a Windows 8 Operating system.
Thank you again.

A:Start Up Page Changed. Computer Is Slower. What Did I Do??

You may have installed the Yahoo Toolbar without knowing it or accidentially changed your startup page without realizing it.Many toolbars, Add-ons, screensavers, and weather monitoring programs come bundled with other software (often without the knowledge of the user) and can be the source of various issues and problems to include Adware/browser hijacking. Even if advised of a toolbar or Add-on, many folks do not know that it is optional and NOT necessary to install in order to operate the program. Toolbars and Add-ons can usually be removed via Add/Remove Programs or the Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7/8, so always check there first. If the program is not listed in Add/Remove or Programs and Features, the next place to check is your browser Add-ons.- How to Disable Addons, Extensions or Plugins in Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer- How to Disable Add-ons/Extensions in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google ChromeTo set or reset Google Chrome's Home Page, please refer to How to set the home page in Google ChromeTo restore the default settings in Google Chrome, please refer to: Reset Default Page Settings in Google Chrome

A few months ago i sold my old gateway computer to my aunt and cousin.

Anyways i loaded what i though was enough security and told them not to do anything dumb sat them down showed them how to use the anti-virus software, adaware, spybot blah blah..

I get a call about a week ago from my aunt saying she can't log onto her computer. i ask why? she tells me as soon as she turns it on it asks her for a password (this is before windows or anything loads up, right after the gateway symbol comes up and the press F10 for blah blah which you can't do anyways)
She must have downloaded a virus that tracked her keystrokes or something cause then she told me for about a month she was having problems with all of her passwords being changed and all this stuff i told her she definitely screwed herself over by not telling me the before it got to bad.

I tried to wipe out XP and reinstall but it will not let me boot from an XP CD or floppy disk... no matter what i try to do that stupid password login thing comes up and after two try of typing stuff in a weird smiley face pops up and then you have to restart.

Is there any hope for this computer? what steps or tools do i need to revive this PC if any or is it just a total loss and should i just tell them to throw it away and look for a new one for them

Sometimes when starting up my Windows 8.1 laptop, the scroll setting will be set to scroll one line per tick scroll. When I go to the mouse settings on the control panel, it says "5" lines per mouse scroll (which is what I have it set to.), however it only ticks one. This means every single time this happens, I have to reset the setting to 5, despite it already being there.

I do not know how to reproduce this issue, though would love this minor nuisance to be fixed.

Hello, I hope someone has the answer for a new problem that has cropped up on my machine. I run Windows XP SP3. Previously, when I started my computer it always went directly to my desktop without stopping at a Welcome screen or requiring me to type my username and password (this is the way I liked it). For some reason, now the system goes to a Log On to Windows screen with the blank Username and Password boxes, which are then immediately greyed out and another box appears on top of it: Logon Message: The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case. I clicked OK and my computer went to the logon screen with my name and one for a guest. This is a screen I never use, but I clicked on my name (there is no password) and it finally went to the desktop. I thought, Okay, no worries. Then I noticed that the Start Button and system tray were missing. As I opened up Internet Explorer I started noticing other problems: I lost the ability to cut and paste in any program, most URL links did not work when I clicked on them, pages sent to my printer no longer printed, I could not choose different fonts, colors, or get simple formatting like paragraphs to take effect when sending emails or posting to forums like this (hence the run-on nature of this post), I cannot even move icons around on my desktop (they are locked, even though that is not checked in the desktop prope... Now I have lost all programs and internet connection from the laptop and can't do anything with it.

Question: Would I need to reload windows 7? or can I do it an easier way.

Hello everyone.
Today I tried Windows 10... it's not bad at all but for the moment I prefer to stick with Windows 7.
So I downgraded and everything is fine a part from a small detail in the start menu...

As you can see my Windows 7 is in Italian but there are three entries that are in English.
Documents-Pictures-Music instead of Documenti-Immagini-Musica.
All the settings in control panel are on "Italian" so I don't know why this happened.

Any way to fix it?

When my pc restarted after a windows update (Windows 7 64 bit), Windows 7 would not restart. The auto repair utility was unable to make repairs although I am able to use it to get to DOS and see my drives, folders, files etc.

It seems like the C: drive (solid state 58gb) is now named the D: drive and the former D: drive (500gb internal) is now named C:

The problem signature states:
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline
Problem Signature 01 and 02: 6.1.7600.16385

I have been able to put in a bootable AVG disk and scan the drive for viruses (none found), but when I put in a Bart disk, I get the BSOD.

I also found a link showing how to set the disk partition to active for the 58gb solid state boot drive, but still could not auto repair.

Any suggestions are welcome. The repair factility can't find recover points (probably because it can't find the operating system).

I have a Windows 7 Computer on which Corel Paint and Corel Paint Shop Pro were installed.  I clicked on a picture I was editing and all of a sudden all of my icons on my desktop changed to the Corel symbol and every time I try to open them I get an error message saying that they cannot open.  All of the files on the desktop and start programs are .ink files linked to corel.  Even Corel would not open.  I have already tried System Restore and that did not work.  I tried deleting the Icon cache data base file and restarting the computer and that did not work.  I even deleted all of my Corel products and that did not do it.  The only things I can open are recycle bin, control panel and windows explorer (which I have to open by right clicking the start button).  I cannot open any of my other installed programs without getting the error message that they are now .ink files and cannot be opened.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Icons on Desktop and Start all changed to Corel logo

Search on 'Corel Draw' here.  Does that sound like the problem you're having?  Some reported a fix here.  Where the check mark is.  Idea is to download that zip and double click the .reg file in it, per the Microsoft Moderator who made it.  Supposed to work in Vista or Win7.  But I've not had the problem, so haven't tried it.
Someone here in BC might know if that really works; it might be malware, so let them help you first.  It's not a new problem.  If you'll read the first link, others had the same problem when they clicked on other folders and files.
In fact, you can click here to see how common the problem (I ran a Google search in that link).

Yes if you know how to use a resource editor like Restorator and know where to find the existing icons. There are a few icon sets that come with auto installers but not many. Unfortunately location maps all seem to be a bit piecemeal and scattered across the net at the moment.

Hello There ...I really hope someone can help me , I am at my wits end !!

I have a Toshiba Satellite A60 running windows XP SP3

Satellite A60-672
Part Number : PSA60E-02Z02P7Y
Key Features
- Intel? Celeron? processor
- Microsoft? Office OneNote ? 2003
- 40GB Hard Disk Drive
- 15.0" TFT colour display

The problem is that somehow I have changed the boot path and windows will now not start I get this message

Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.

Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.

Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information

when I try and enter safe mode nothing happens ...try to restore to windows worked ...nothing infact nothing in F8 works ...entre bios changed to boot from CD.....nothing !! ...the CD/RW-DVD ROM is not working so I can not just run the product recovery disk which would have been great now I have no idea what to do next.....I really hope someone out there can help me I am way to young to have the grey hairs this is giving me

A:Changed boot path by windows will not start

Do you know you have changed the boot path? As in you were playing around with your setting etc? Or are you guessing that is what happened due to the error message?

From this error message
"Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware."
I would rather think the hard drive needs to be checked unless you deleted critical Boot up files or changed your boot.ini (But you would know if you edited or deleted a file).

Since the F8 boot menu is starting up but nothing is working on the menu the only way to fix this would be to boot from a CD and run chkdsk or run the recovery CDs or run a Windows XP repair from CD.
Either way you going to have to get that CD drive to work.

I have been incredibly stupid and changed the settings in my BIOS setup. What is even more stupid is I did this by making it "Load Optimal Defaults" so I dont actually know what has been changed.

As a result of this windows 7 now cannot start, it brings you to the error fixing part where it searches for errors, cant find any and offers you some more options including system restore. Ive done a system restore but that has also not fixed it. I have little idea how to fix this, windows 7 was working perfectly until I changed the BIOS, but not knowing what was changed means I cant change it back.

The BIOS version is: 4core1600twins-p35 p1.40

Any help would be immensely appreciated. Thank you very much!

A:Changed BIOS settings now Windows 7 wont start

Hi Rhodri and welcome to Windows 7 Forums

This should be quite easy to fix. All you need to do is to reset the BIOS to its defaults. Boot up and enter your BIOS. You are looking for an option to reset it to its defaults (this is NOT the same as Optimal Defaults). Alternatively, remove and replace the motherboard battery - this will cause all settings to be lost from the BIOS, so you need to make a note of your current settings on a piece of paper so that you can restore them afterwards. This will include the date and time. For details on how to do this, the location of the battery and whether or not there is a motherboard jumper that accomplishes the same thing, see your motherboard manual. Please ensure that your system is unplugged from the mains whilst you do this.

Hello, I hope my note finds you doing well. I am running Windows XP SP3.

Previously, when I started my computer it always went directly to my desktop without stopping at a Welcome screen or requiring me to type my username and password, which is the way I like it. For some reason, now the system goes to a Log On to Windows Screen with the blank Username and Password boxes, which are then immediately greyed out and another appears on top of it: Logon Message - The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case.

I clicked OK and my computer went to the logon screen with my name and one other account for a guest. This is a screen I never use, but I clicked on my name (there is no password) and it finally went to the desktop. I thought, Okay, no worries, then I noticed that the Start Button and system tray were missing. As I opened up Internet Explorer I started noticing other problems: I lost the ability to cut and paste in any program, most URL links did not work when I clicked on them, pages sent to my printer no longer printed, I cannot move icons around on my desktop (they are locked even though that is not checked in the desktop properties), I cannot choose different fonts and colors when sending emails or posting to forums, and sometimes simple formatting like making a paragraph does not take effect.

I tried some suggestions I found online like openi... Read more

Hello. I have Windows XP Home Edition, SP2 on two separate bootable hard drives in my Dell XPS B1000r. I have my 80 GB “main” hard drive and a 40 GB “extra” hard drive. I mainly boot from my “main” 80 GB hard drive, and that’s the drive that won’t boot after I changed the drive letter.

I wanted to rename the Drive letters associated with each of these hard drives. I was able to change the “extra” hard drive using the Disk Management option. I was not able to change the letter of my “main” hard drive, because I booted from it. I used Regedit to change the boot drive letter, based on the Microsoft Help & Support article:;EN-US;Q223188

I renamed the “main” 80 GB drive from F: to C:. I then renamed the “extra” 40 GB drive from I: to D:.

This wasn’t a smart move on my part, because after I renamed the “main” bootable hard drive, Windows will not load on that drive. When I boot to my “main” drive, I get the Windows “Welcome” screen that hangs there for hours. When I force restart, I can boot onto the “extra” 40 GB hard drive, though.

Troubleshooting I tried:
I tried starting the main drive in “Safe Mode”, but it won’t load. I also tried starting the main drive with “Last Known Good Configuration”, but get the same “Welcome” screen and it won’t load any further.

I believe I need to get into my registry for the “main” drive. Can anyone help me to get back into the registry for this ma... Read more

My son accidentally changed the start-up type to "Disabled" on the Group Policy service and now I (as Administrator) cannot access or do anything requiring admin privileges.

I cannot open Services, Regedit, or any other Admin tool, nor can I run a command prompt as Administrator. I am afraid to shut it down for fear of not being able to access anything when rebooted.

This laptop doesn't have a CD drive; otherwise, I would repair Windows files with the Windows disk I have.

I've tried every way I found when researching the problem, but I am denied access at every turn.

Can somebody please help??

My username is not "J" but now I see that in the start menu instead of my real name.

And as I said when I boot my username is correct and if I browse by path I see C:\Users\Pether.

Hi folks,

I recently ran into frustration trying to save or make new any files in the root C:\ directory, with Windows7 Home Premium being set by default, of course, to not allow this. I did a cursory skim of some information online about changing these settings, and made some changes a bit hastily. Specifically, for the C:\ drive I took ownership of every subdirectory and gave my account full permissions under security. Annoyingly, this didn't fix the original issue of saving to that drive (which I no longer care about anyway), and it caused (at least) two new problems. Now my start menu has far fewer listings than it used to have; I imagine some programs were listed in it based on the previous permissions. I tried to do a system recovery, both through the OS and with a recovery disc, and that does not work either. It lists restore points, but after restarting it says that the restore was unable to complete.

So, my questions are thus:

Can I fix the permissions and ownership of just the restore directory and program components, enough to run one, and revert?

Or, failing that, is there a way to undo recent ownership changes made? I poked around in the Event Viewer, but it's not laid out very clearly.

It's ok if it's not possible or easy to do it this way; I can grab just my vital files and completely reinstall Windows if it's absolutely necessary, but it seems excessive. I doubt the system restore files are corrupted. More, let's say, confuse... Read more

Now if i can find the mobo and switch it out, how difficult is it? And i want to keep the hdd data. How do i keep that data once i plug the hdd to the new mobo?

A:Laptop needs mobo to be changed. How can I change it?

You look up the make and model number for the motherboard in that HP and either get one from HP or somewhere else like Ebay. You will need the workshop manual for your model from HP -- download as a PDF.
If the motherboard is identical to the one you have, and you have fitted it correctly, the disk should just work as before.

It is not difficult if you follow the manual and take care not to force things, but you do need to be patient and mechanical skill is a good idea.. You should make a paper/card template for the screws and bits as you take them apart.

My cousin tried to connect his laptop to my Linksys WRT54G2 router, in doing so he entered the pin on the router. I then went on my laptop so i could use the internet but my linksys router did not appear on the list of wireless devices that i could connect to, instead it showed his laptop (which is called LUCYSPC_NETWORK) as the router. I could connect to this connection but instead of asking for the WPA/WPA2 security key which my Linksys router asks for, it asks me for the pin on the back of the router. i have a Compaq F700 laptop which is about 2 years old. recently i played on it (a lot) so much so that the processor completely burned out. since my model is not supported in India and no private engineer seemed to know what to do, i had the processor changed for a pretty hefty sum. two months down the line and my computer is acting all funny again.
1. it shuts down and restarts at odd hours .. sometimes after 2 min. sometimes after 2 hours.
2. sometimes the screen kinda distorts... like that "thread" slide transition in MS PowerPoint.
3. it hangs at odd hours.. sometimes before sometimes after it shuts down.
4. and when it shuts down it restarts continuously till it gets it right.

do you think its because of the processor ?

A:Changed laptop processor screwed again?

Well it certainly needs work... a good cleaning out of all the debris, dust, firch, mogus, and grunge... first..
Then make sure all memory banks are filled with good quality memory.
The processor should not need replacement, but the CPU fan might need it, if you use it a great deal.
But I would start by a clean reformat and reinstall of the hard drive... and then work up from there.

A:Changed CPU on my laptop but monitor won't turn on

The handbook for the Aspire 5100 you can find here in PDF format says:
Platform ? AMD Turion? 64 X2 dual-core TL-50/TL-52/TL-56/TL-
60/TL-62 processor or higher with 1 MB L2 cache,
supporting AMD PowerNow!? Technology and AMD HyperTransport
? Technology?

Mobile AMD Sempron? 3200+/3400+/3500+ or
higher with 512 KB L2 cache, supporting AMD
? Technology and AMD HyperTransport? Technology, 64bit OS support.

even though the new CPU is the same socket doesn't necessarily mean it will work with that system. Other times it may work but requires a BIOS update to develop compatibility for the CPU. Your best bet is to talk to ACER directly about whether or not that CPU is compatable with that model.

Hi guys,

I’m having trouble with my laptop HDD, it is locked read only. This isn’t my OS drive, though I have a few programs on it, it is mostly pictures, music and games. A few months back I had to do a clean install of my OS drive. I uninstalled all the programs off of this drive but I kept the other data that is portable, and didn’t wipe this drive. That is probably why this issue is happening. I should say first it isn’t completely read only. I have installed both a program and a game to the drive today, and it didn’t give me any errors. However I cannot make changes to current files. In the root directory if I right click->New there will only be a folder there with the administrator shield. If I go into another folder, I can create more types of files when I right click-new, but I get ““Error 0x80070522: A required privilege is not held by the client" when I try to create a new .txt document, for instance. Lastly, if I right click a folder, uncheck read only, click apply, there is no longer a blue box, but if I press ok and go into its properties again, it is read only again.

These are all the steps I have tried.

The taking ownership shortcut :

Here's some context: I have a two year old laptop, model Acer Aspire E 15, E5-571-56WG. I noticed a few months ago that two or three screws had fallen out of the bottom of my laptop, and about a month ago, that it was making noises (like one of the internal compnents had broken loose and was suspended inside my laptop). I had one screw with me, as I'd found it at the bottom of my bag, and screwed it back on to the bottom. The small noises were still there though. Anyway, I've been noticing recently (like about 3 times in the past week) that my laptop sometimes randomly shuts off on its own. A lot of people on the internet said it was probably a problem with the fan, so I didn't bother checking it out yet. But about an hour ago, something else happened - the laptop screen kinda stopped working. Instead of displaying the Google Chrome browser, the screen had horizontal, multicolored static lines flickering on it. I shut down the laptop and turned it on again immediately, and it's working fine now, but I'm not sure if this was random or if I should get it repaired. Do you think you could tell me what's wrong with my laptop, or give me some advice regarding it? I take it to school everyday (if that matters) and I'll be needing it next month so I want to make sure it's okay. Thank you

Hi guys, I need a wireless adapter that supports 5Ghz.
I have an older laptop that has some issues, but the card in it works fine, so I swapped it into this laptop.

It installs fine, I updated the drivers etc, but it will not 'turn on'. When I troubleshoot it, the error is that it is currently turned off. The button to turn on and off my wireless doesn't do anything to change it, so although its plugged in exactly the same as my other, it's as if my wireless button is specially designed for original adapter only.

If it helps, on my other laptop, the wireless was switched on with a on off switch on the side of the laptop, rather than one of the F keys.

The adapter in my laptop is a: Ralink RT5390R
The one I tried to install is a: Intel Centrino advanced-n 6200
The laptop I am trying to install it on is a HP Pavilion G6

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I had a local computer guy replace the inverter for my laptop, because everything was working except the backlight (I used a flashlight lightened from behind the screen after I disassembled the screen. Everything worked great!)

I just went to the guy's house to pick it up. We had ONE test to see if everything was running ok. It surely was. Then, I just got home and turned it on the second time after it was repaired. Everything got so dark again. I could barely see things on the screen. Why?? What happened?

Hi mdrobbo03,

Can you let me know what version of Windows 7 this is? 32bit or 64bit.

Also, does this occur in Safe Mode? Tap F8 whilst the computer is first booting up and choose Safe Mode. Want to see if it is a program that may be causing the issue as when looking into the issue, certain programs written for a 64bit OS when installed onto a 32bit OS can cause the problem sometimes.
Can you remember installing any new programs prior to this occurring?

Can anyone help?

My son decided to update our router firmware, together with this the password was changed. My computer which hosts the Internet connection works fine, all other laptops have now been connected successfully after simply changing the password. However my wifes laptop won't play ball. It is a Samsung R510, with Vista Home Premium OS. It worked fine prior to updating the firmware. I have been through the process of changing the password and have the correct security encryption in place, exactly the same process as with the other laptops. It then says successfully connected, but shows in the bottom right of the screen, Unidentified network access local only and will not connect when the browser is opened. I have tried to diagnose but the usual windows prompt to reboot both modem and router has no effect. I have set it to private, as advised elsewhere, I have switched the firewall off and removed security software, all to no avail.

From another post in this forum I tried the command prompt, then ipconfig/renew. The result of that was the following message:

An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Connection: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out. No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has media disconnected.

Not sure if that information helps anybody. So any help much appreciated. Let me stress that no changes were made to the laptop at all, it is simply not connecting following the firmware update a... Read more

Hey folks!

Recently purchased a new laptop - (However I'm on Windows 7)

I went about trying to plug it into my television (Toshiba 40BV701B) via an HDMI cable and had the notorious problem of not being able to find the right screen resolution. I went into display settings and started mucking around to find the right one. However, I must've selected a resolution setting that was too bizarre or something (think I went really high) because the image didn't show up on the TV (nor on the laptop as I had set the laptop screen to switch off when plugged into the TV) and after a few seconds of nothing my laptop made its 'something has been removed/unplugged' sound and the screen flicked back on. A few seconds more and it would make the sound of 'something has been plugged in' before switching its screen off and seemingly trying to connect to the TV again. This would repeat for as long as the HDMI cable was connected.

I get the feeling that I could sort the problem by changing the res for when the laptop is plugged into the TV, but the only way I know how to do that is when the laptop is plugged into my TV and there is no longer any screen working when this happens! I probably should have done a system restart at the time, but think I have left it far too long now.

Any help would be much appreciated,

A:Changed screen res for HDMI connection. Screwed up my laptop!

When you change resolution Windows gives a few seconds of the new resolution and a dialog box comes up asking if you are happy with the new settings. This could account for the sounds you heard a few seconds after plugging into the TV.

Have you tried changing the settings for extended display and leaving the laptop screen on. This will make it much easier to change around the resolution settings.

My mother in law has a toshiba satellite p775-s7100 and this morning she told me there was a toshiba update, I was on her laptop yesterday and saw there was an update for her bios, so I'm assuming she clicked the update button and messed the update up somehow. Now when we try to boot the laptop, it'll go straight to the windows error recovery screen with the options to start normally or start the start up repair. Choosing start up repair loads the files and the bar fills up at the bottom of the screen, then the screen goes black with no mouse and it doesn't do anything else from there. Choosing to start windows normally starts the normal boot with the windows logo but as soon as it starts, it freezes there. It shows "Starting windows" And two of the dots that spin around to form the logo appear, but as soon as the two dots appear, that's when it freezes. She didn't completely break her laptop did she?

A:Laptop won't start after update, can't start start up repair either

In some cases windows Recovery disks may help.

Here is the link for Windows 7 x86 edition :

Click the download button on the page and then burn the iso file to a Cd-r medium.

But if Win7 recovery cd is not of help ,in that case Live CD 's come to aid.

Here is the list of linux livecd's :

Linux | The LiveCD List

Booting via a livecd (free Linux distributions) needed files can be recovered and copied
to external mediums and system afterwards can be re-setup.

Linux livecd can be burned onto a dvd-r /cd-r disk or to an usb flash memory.USB is faster and better
of course.

Laptops like Toshiba have recovery partitions in many cases, and a special recovery
option is provided upon bootup.(F9 - F10 likewise..)

hope your problem gets solved.

Check the Keyboard Language Settings, it's down by the Clock. Press "ENG" and a language prefs panel pops up. I'll bet you have it set for a UK keyboard, or other country. You can do this with the mouse so no key presses are rquired - But if you have to, press the Enter key which is associated with the Num Lock Keypad, it should be shown with alternate colours, you press the FN key to get to them,

I have a dlink router that previously had a WEP password set, and at that time our Macbook Pro laptop was connecting fine. I decided to change the network name and change password security to WPA2 (instead of the WEP) and I made the network name "hidden." After doing this the main computer (IMac) and a PC are still connecting fine, but now the macbook laptop won't connect. I have typed the new network name and the new WPA2 password on the macbook pro in Network Diag., but still won't connect. It is seeing the new network name, and I know I am typing the correct new password, but the macbook pro won't connect. Interestingly, if I unplug the router and plug it back in, the macbook pro will then connect fine, but only for a brief time. Later in the evening, it can't find the connection again! I hope someone here could pls help me. Thanks in advance.

I have a year old asus k55n that has been upgraded to win 8.1. Was running a bit slow, so i was checking settings, and noticed that in msconfig it was set to the limited boot option (the last one on the list), not normal boot. I had noticed before, and when i would set it to normal, it would be back at the limited option the next time I used the computer. This time, however, upon reboot, it took a longer time than usual to boot, and then it gets to the screen where there is usually the user name and password box (with the power button in the lower right corner and the accessiblity button in the lower left), but there is no password box or user name/image. I can change the accessilibity options, and use the power button, so the computer hasn't frozen. I suspected perhaps there was a secure boot issue, so i toggled those settings in bios to no avail. Tried recovery disk, booted up ubuntu 14.04, and all the files are there and doesn't appear to be any issues that way. SFC /scannow says errors found but couldn't fix. DISM says repairable, but i cant seem to run it in such a way that it finds the source files to do the repair, and i'm not sure that is an issue, as using the advance options from the recovery menu I can boot into safe mode and the computer runs fine. ANy help whatsoever appreciated, and thanks for taking the time to read my long rambling post.

It even shutdown on its own when launching the Startup Repair Process.

Hi there,
My first post, and thank you for having me here
I have a Dell Inspiron 1300.
A couple of problems.
1) I changed the memory from 512 to 2gb recently (ddr 2 4200, kingston). I got a message not long after I changed the memory saying I should reinstall/change (not sure) drivers, so I downloaded R92578, which I ran.
2) on startup Window I now get option to start using Windows xp he, or 'restore windows xp he.
3) I downloaded a 'da vinci' theme from dowtheme and now I can't get rid of all of it. I am still left with 'Mona Lisa' on my start page (where the account names are displayed) and if I choose not to 'restore windows xp he' it goes to a da vinci drawing, and then boots to Mona etc. I never thought I wouldn't like seeing Mona so much
4) I tried to install my logitech webcam 9.5 and got the blue screen of death with an lvs something message. So I did a system restore to the day before I did that.

The ram was changed first from all of the above...can anyone can tell me where I'm at, and am I in a lot of trouble?

Thanking you in advance, and I'm not sure if I'm on the right forum board here?

The other day I was working on my computers when I became locked out of my desktop computer and my laptop computer as it would not accept my password after multiple attempts. I currently have three computers set-up. My desktop computer, my laptop computer, and my server computer. I was working on my server computer at the time through RDP on my laptop. The server did not have any other outside traffic passing through it except for a No-IP client that updates a host domain to point to my IP address. I shut down the server and went to log back into the remote desktop from my laptop after reboot but I mistakenly logged into my desktop remotely instead. Afterward, when I tried to log back into my desktop computer it would not accept my password. I then locked my laptop which uses the same password and it would not accept the password either. Both computers I had to use this tutorial to reset my password and log back in. I am now concerned as to what may have caused my password to no longer be accepted. I am also concerned for the security of my network. I posted a topic with a DDS log here, but have yet to receive a response. I understand that there is an average response time of 5 days, but I'm just very concerned for my security now and have been unable to figure out the source of this problem. Any response and help is greatly appreciated.

Then restarted system and got this message:

I have gone to CMOS set up and used f7 to optimize and hit f10 to save
come back with the third error.

this computer has always done a memory test when it starts up 99% of the time I let it run, total startup time if I do, 10minutes, if I skip memory test still 10 minutes.

Now slower than ever trying to start up

I have read your various threads and none I found discuss these errors just suddenly apprearing. This computer was a built from scratch by an IT friend of mine who has moved away I have all the documentation that came with it.

I have tried system restore back one week did not work, I was following ASK tech page guide and downloaded REGSERVO program came back with 6800 errors and wanted 39.00, well as you know the economy is in the tank and I do not have the extra money, but i do have the extra time if someone could walk me through what to do.

I use Norton utilities and clean the drive/registries/and explorer weekly.
Please send any advise possible
Thank you

A:sudden error message CPU has been changed or CPU Ratio changed failed

REGSERVO is a Rogue program that tells you, you have problems and "we will fix them for you for $39.00!" "But. Wait! for an extra amount for shipping and handling we will really screw your Windows installation up!"

Of course they make you wait until they find the registry errors to tell you that you have to pay $39.00. I just did a google search on REGSERVO and the only ones that give RegServo good reviews are, and hear is the drum roll, Regservo itself. Stay away from any of these programs that say they will fix your registry then want money to fix the problems they found.

Also there is no need to run any registry cleaner. More often than not it will not help your problem or speed up your computer, and can indeed break your registry to the extent of having to reinstall windows.

If this is the system in yur Computer specs, have you been having any problems with needing to adjust the date and time lately?

Hi all-
Apologies in advance as I am not exactly technologically sound.
I tried plugging in my digital camera today, and though it did not come up, I hunted down the Removable Disk (E) drive, which I figured would open it. It told me that I had to choose a program to open it with, so I chose some kind of picture viewer. Then all the icons on my desktop turned into said picture viewer, and I cannot open anything but that program from the desktop. Also, when I go into Programs and try to open them, they don't work there either. Help!
I am using Windows 7. I have tried System Restore but it told me that it could not complete it and gave me some kind of error message with 0x80070005. It recommended that I turn off my protection or whatever to complete it, but I have Norton 360 and no idea how to turn it off!
Any help is greatly appreciated- we just bought this computer in November and now my husband is ticked off!

Welcome Tuckersmom !
When I connect my camera to either of our computers, the camera itself indicates on the viewer how to handle the pictures....

not even sure how to start this. i dont know exactly what i did but everything was changed. i was going to try to watch a movie thats on my laptop, it said 'avi' and when i clicked on it nothing happened. i dragged it into itunes to see if it would play there, nope. i right-clicked it, picked 'open with' VLC, still nothing. right clicked it again and chose windows media center, nothing happened. i tried transfering the folder with the option available in media center, still didnt play.

when i closed media center i saw all my desktop stuff was changed to open with media center, i knew immediatly i screwed up pretty bad somewhere. i right clicked internet explorer and changed it to open with internet explorer, it then changed everything to open with internet explorer. when i clicked on internet explorer it didnt open, but it did open the download bar as if i downloaded it. it says "Internet Explorer.Ink" or .lnk. when i click open, the window comes up but closes right away.

can someone help me by telling me how to get everything back to normal?

It sounds like what you've done is associate a .lnk file (shortcut type) with an application and now all shortcuts will run with that application. The avi file you were referring too may be just that as well: a shortcut.

This has also been known to be caused by a malware infection, in which case if you suspect it, you'll have to report it to our security team in the appropriate Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help subforum.

This may help with the situation.

First try to log in Safe Mode (F8) and use System Restore. If not, you need a Windows installation CD, so you can repair Windows at Windows Repair (WinRe) console.

hp pavilion desktop bought march 2009. windows vista xp svc pack 2 home premium. ie9.
i may have made things worse of course thru search engine remedies. i have possibly checked or unchecked boxes in internet options box. i also possibly clicked on something in a download programs box to open under ie (default) and now everything wants to open in ie, changing my icons, etc. but, even more damaging, i could click on anything from desktop to control panel, a window will flash but a view and track downloads box will pop up asking me if i want to run or save. no matter what i hit, the program's publisher couldn't be verified -- learn more--(something about signatures and certicates -help box will pop up). even now the download window keeps coming up with iexplorer in it, so this is probably getting worse. also when i first log on and my deskyop's coming in, a hundred windows try to pop up and of course still all turn into downloads/run or save boxes. oh and this whole thing happened sun or mon night ( 5/18-19/2014). i almost dread what you can tell me, but i've got to know. and a lot of the things through the searches said to run regedits, etc. or download cleaners, etc. (which are probably still stuck in this computer). in any way, i was still running into the download/run or saves, so i can't even get into my own computer sort of. and finally, i can get to the internet --my yahoo (homepage if i go to control panel and click on the welcome and then "more info") or i ju... Hi, and welcome to TSF.

I'm guessing you're a fairly new computer/internet user, otherwise you would know that posting everything in CAPITAL LETTERS is considered shouting. It is also extremely difficult to read.

For that reason, I haven't even tried to read it, I'll wait for the edited version.
