Dell Vista Laptop frustrations

Q: Dell Vista Laptop frustrations

Hi, I have just registered.
I am interested in computers having started with a TRS 16K level 2 in 1981, followed by a BBC model B, followed by a PackardBell 16MHz PC. I then bought an Acorn RISC computer upgraded to StrongArm and only changed bacvk to PCs because I needed email facilities.

Here are details of my present PC
Hardware
I have a Dell Dimension 5000 P4 with HT technology (3.00 GHz, 800fsb, 1MB cache) with 1GB Ram
160GB HD
128mb ATI Radeon Graphics
Sound Blaster Audigy
etc
Software
The operating system is XP SP3
I use Avast, ZoneAlarm, CCleaner, Spyware Doctor.
I use Woks and Worksuite, Picasa3, Micrografx\Picture Publisher,
Serif PagePlus11, Serif PhotoPlus10, Audacity,
I am very happy with the setup

My wife has my old Desktop which had W98 and which has been upgraded to XP SP3 (from a new XP upgrade). This is an Intel Pentium3 732MHz with 512 MB Ram and serves her purpose for emails and word processing.

Two weeks ago I ordered a Dell Inspiron Laptop with Dual2Core processor, 2GB RAM and 250MBHD. It came with Vista just a week ago. I successfully connected the laptop to my wireless modem and two other desktops. I deleted McAfee and installed Avast and ZoneAlarm which caused problems. I ended up with open windows on the screen when setting up Avast which I could not remove. Even the TaskManager would not close this application. I opened folders to put photo images in and before I could the open folders disappeared. Vista upgraded each time I connected to the internet.
I have become so frustrated with Vista. I asked Dell to replace Vista with XP but they said they could not. I have reluctantly requested Dell to collect the laptop and refund my money.
Have other Vista users found similar experiences to me?

A: Dell Vista Laptop frustrations

Your issue (likely software) is most likely Virus\Malware related, have a look here:
UPDATED 8-step Viruses/Spyware/Malware Preliminary Removal Instructions

But because the Ram was only recently upgraded, there is a high possibility of that:
Please run Memtest on your Ram

I sense a Vista owner who has discovered they do not like Vista after all though
Oh and I came from similar days, but never owned a computer until about 4sim cards of 1meg ram (might have been 2sims cards, can't remember) But involved in computers before that as well

OK, I have this 2013 HP laptop that had 64 bit windows 8 on it. Guy hates windows 8 and it wouldn't boot up anyway. I wiped it, restoration partition and all. This was intentional. I put Windows 7 pro, 32 bit on it since it only has 4gb of ram anyway and I don't have 64 bit. Now there's no drivers for any network interface, cabled or wireless, no USB drivers, etc. HP only has windows 8 64 bit drivers. I've tried that website where you enter device ID to get manufacturer info so I can try to find drivers but it never works for me.

Can anyone help me find 32 bit drivers for the wired LAN based device ID ? If I only had that I could take care of the rest myself. Man I hate HP.

In the last two days I've had one oddball problem after another with...well, I honestly don't know what "with", for sure. It could have been a Cox Cable Internet problem...but, I have no Cox software installed on my computer...It might have been a Windows problem too.

But, it has begun to look like Mozilla may be the main culprit, several times the error box saying that Mozilla has generated errors and is shutting down has brought everything to a halt...with the added bugtracking dialogue boxes popping up...

...and I feel as if I've been let down by a long and trusted friend that's never given me a minute's problem since I first installed it over a year ago. I even entrusted it to take care of all my passwords and logins...and now it's turned on me...

Which is all a little scary, because when I start taking computer problems personally, it's time for me to take a break and go pet the dogs, or something.

Unfortunately, I have a load of work assignments with deadlines on Tuesday morning, and I can't afford to stop, but I need to be online for some parts of my work...and I can't stand the idea that I'm now back to square one, and actually connected to the Internet fulltime using IE only. (Eeek!) It's been a long time since IE has been my default browser, and it's making me very nervous. (yes, I have firewalls both hardware and software kinds, and anti-spyware, popup blocking, AV, all faithfully updated an... Read more

A:Frustrations, Frustrations - Mozilla-IE

I know what you mean about missing Mozilla -- you could use Firefox 0.9.2 which is just the browser without anything else. Thunderbird 0.7.2 is the email client. I like using the two better than Mozilla because it starts up and runs faster (I used to use Mozilla).

As for Windows Updates doing anything to my browsers... not that I can tell. Firefox and Thunderbird are running as they should be. Although Windows Update did take a little longer than expected (sort of stalled). I turned off the software firewall to speed it along (no, I'm not nuts, the router has a firewall as well).

Just my two cents

running a Windows Vista network. no problems with 3 wirless computers running Windows XP. and no problems printing remotely using the desktop running Vista. new Dell laptop is running Vista and trying to add a printer, it doesn't see any of the printers. At first it didn't show the wired desktop on the laptop under the network. On the wired desktop under network, It showed the laptop as a music sign and not a computer icon. We deleted the workgroup name and retyped it and changed it to a private computer. have disabled both firewalls. The laptop is running Trend Internet Securioty. It then found the wired desktop on the laptop. But it still doesn't see any of the printers that are connected to the wired desktop.Tried to find the printers by typing in \\192.168.100 under the run command. It said it couldn't recognize the wired DNS address 192.168.100. That is the ipconfig address from cmd and then ipconfig from the wired Dell laptop.

What do we need to do to have the laptop see the printers?

Hello all, I just acronis'ed (partition resized) Vista x64 from the whole hard drive 451 to 150gb and to make space for windows 7 installation on the free 300gb. During the resize the laptop went to sleep so I had to reboot --- but after rebooting, I could not create a partition because it reported as no space available. Somehow ? I got out of that and managed to resize again, this time successfully (so I thought) to 150gb. Installed Win7 successfully on the 300gb partition but now unable to boot back to Vista although the bootup gives both options win7 and vista. Ran EBCD and set up windows 7 boot with vista as second choice. Still no luck - Vista will not come up - even in safe mode - it just sits there with a black screen and the arrow cursor.

Tried the original install disk and did repair several times from the CD on vista partition but still did not start - I then went to command and ran bootrec.exe /fixmbr etc... it said successful but still no luck in vista boot. The 150gb partition seems to be intact there are program files and program files (x86) folders with all the installed stuff on it. Anyway I moved all what could be moved into the win7 partition in preparation for the worst!! (a fresh vista re-install). Is this my only solution now ??

Laptop is a Dell and has data backup - laptop still under warranty. If I re-install Vista I can re-install all the programs but how can I get back the Dell software for the online backup facilities ?

Hi there!

I wasn't sure if I should post this in the Vista or XP thread, but since I'm currently running on Vista, I thought this more appropriate.. sorry if I'm wrong :\

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop, which came installed with Vista Premium 32. I've had it coming up to 2 years now, and it's in need of a reformat I think.

Whilst reformmating, I also want to downgrade to XP... I'm find it hard to justify the strain Vista has on my humble system, since it's not powerful enough to run anything using DirectX10 and the like.. I think a nice, more streamlined XP would turn my system into a faster leaner one... (imho).

I've backed up everything, except for my outlook emails, (I need to get onto that) but am I forgetting anything?

Vista is embedded on this laptop, but I don't think that's going to be a problem if I reformat and do a clean XP install.

It's also been a very long time since I've done this. Is it better to reformat, then do the reinstall? I can't even remember how to do the first, thought I know it's fairly simple... F1 springs to mind..

Is there a particular version of XP i should be aiming for?

My system spec:
Dell Inspiron 1501
AMD Turion 64 x2 1.6 GHz
Memory: 1GB (I was sure it was more than this!)
System type: 32-bit OS

Any guidance would be appreciated

Thankies

Hi, I just purchased a Dell yesterday and started using it today.

It came with the basic McAfee 30 day trial software but no other anti-virus or spyware software.

Anyway, looks like I have a spyware/malware on my computer.

I constantly get IE popping up with a "Best AntiSpyware Solution" window promoting me to scan my computer. The link is something like http://antispywareexpert.com/...

Can someone please help? I have attached the hijackthis below.

Thanks.

A:Spyware on Vista (Dell laptop)

Hi,

Just an update.. I downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and ran the program. It found a few infected files and removed them.

Since then, it looks like my laptop is running better - I'm not getting the popups from IE (which also pushed some popups with the url http://83.149.75.33/...)

Anyway, I'm posted an updated HiJackThis log as well as a Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log.

My Dell laptop which runs vista is painfully slow. I have McAfee, Adaware, Spybot and all the Vista security. I have tried Mozilla software to see if e-mail and internet would load up faster but no luck. Here is my Hijack this log, which looks pretty full to my inexperienced eye. I'd like to start by apologizing to everyone here at bleepingcomputer, I really feel as though I've insulted you by "leaving" the last thread. I was having some personal issues, that have since been delt with. I more than understand if you do not wish to assist me.Anyways, the computer has been running from time to time over the last few months, all offline. A few memos typed, a few offline games played. The school year is about to start, and we usually get our timings via email at about 2330hrs the night before they happen.Orginal thread found here:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...p;#entry1619083Recently, I tried to follow the most recent steps, but found nothing but 404 errors. Have never had a network/connection problem with this laptop (2 years).
Today I decided to reload Vista. All else is OK.
Cannot connect however.
Device Mgr. indicated all 'Other devices' not there including "Network Controller".
Have tried to go through install procedure from MS Driver CD that came with the laptop. No joy.
Previously I always connected to my wireless home network.
Now I cannot connect to my ATT router even with a cable.

Hi

My sister, knowing I've successfully sought help on Techguy before, has gone on holiday and left me with her laptop, which is refusing to boot up. Here is what I've witnessed so far:

Boot up fails and presents (very quickly) a BSOD with the message:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The initial session process or system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000 (0xc0000034 0x001005c4).
The system has been shut down.

(I only managed to capture this message by rebooting the laptop, pressing F8 and disabling automatic restart).

Next boot: run Startup Repair, which returns with the message:

Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

View problem details gives me the following:

Problem signature
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairV2
Problem Signature 01: ManualRepair
Problem Signature 02: 6.0.6000.16386.6.0.6000.16386
Problem Signature 03: 6
Problem Signature 04: 393222
Problem Signature 05: CorruptVolume
Problem Signature 06: NoRootCause
Problem Signature 07: 0
Problem Signature 08: 2
Problem Signature 09: WrpRepair
Problem Signature 10: 2
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

Where do I go from here ??? The terms ManualRepair and CorruptVolume would seem like something I should worry about.

Can anyone offer me any tips please ??? Do these problem details mean anything to anyone ???

Here's hoping for another Techguy success...

HI.

I have a brand new Dell laptop with Windows Vista. I have an HP printer that worked fine with my old computer. I have downloaded the HP driver for my printer from the official HP website (I've deleted and repeated this process several times). Prints go to the queue but don't print. The scan function works, so the connection is fine.
HP techs tried to troubleshoot but ultimately gave up and blamed Dell.
Dell blamed HP before even trying to help, and recommends that I call their tech support line and pay them to troubleshoot.
Microsoft is currently trying to troubleshoot but has been unable to solve the problem.

This is driving me crazy!!!

A:cant print from Dell Win Vista laptop to HP printer

when you were re-installing the printer, did you just delete it in the printers menu, or did you uninstall all of the files that came with it? I only ask because i have had a similiar problem, but when i completely removed all the software then re-installed, it worked. Give it a shot

I have a laptop with windows vista and started to have problems yesterday afternoon. I left on while I left for a couple of hours and came back and was never the same.

The first thing I noticed was the computer said I was hooked up to wifi but icon on bottom tool bar had and "X" through it and everytime I click on IE icon would take forever to come up and then when it did all the farther it got was "IE not repsonding". The "tools" function would not work. I reset IE from drop down window but did not help anything.

Then another thing it is doing is it wont power down when I command it to. It will do the hibernate funtion but wont turn all the way off unless i manually hit the power button. Then when I turn back on says was shut down improperly.

Also the "safe mode" does not seem to be functioning either.

I ran the internet protection program (which also took forever to come up) and says there are no viruses, etc, but sure is acting like it!!!

What is the deal?

A:Dell Laptop Windows Vista won't power down, etc.

Sometimes shut-down problems are related to improperly installed updates, but this doesn't sound likely from your description.

Head over to the Hijack This section of TSF and carefully follow the instructions on what to run and how to post the results. Someone trained in malware removal will get back to you.

Hi,
   Bleeping Computer,

BC Adviser was kind enough to help me with viruses in my old Dell Windows Vista Laptop in another topic.

I was trying to change my sign in or log on password. It became somewhat difficult when I needed to get into the Administrator level account first. When I started to see this information my computer said some files were contaminated. That had me stop. I went into start and then wrote, Computer Management, and opened it. Microsoft site stated to type in cmd in the Start search box and then press Enter, but I was unable to get past that. I don't believe I did any damage because the operating system seems fine.

I would surely appreciate any help trying trying to change the Log in or Sign in Password.

Thanks

I have an LCD screen that I connect with a VGA cable to use as a second monitor. I had a lot of trouble setting it up a long time ago, but somehow it magically setup correctly one day when I rebooted and has worked beautifully for a few months.

I recently changed some settings on my laptop (just disabled/re-enabled some services) and now when I hookup the LCD screen, it makes it my primary monitor with a resolution that it can't handle such that my laptop screen is blank because it is only outputting a signal to the LCD screen. Because the signal is in the wrong format I can't see anything on the LCD screen (it just says 'format not supported') so I can't change my personalization to the correct setting.

I'm doing this through the nVidia control panel and personalization in windows, but the real problem is my computer only detects the tv at start up, or coming out of sleep-mode with the 'force tv detection option' so I can only change settings that affect the tv if the computer has detected it. However, like I said before, once the computer detects it, it defaults to a resolution that doesn't allow me to do anything...it's quite the catch-22.

If anyone has any suggestions on what I could try I'd greatly appreciate it...

deleted, or unistalled? There's a difference, I assume you know. "File missing" tells me you deleted stuff but didn't uninstall it properly. But, even if that's the case, your HJT log doesn't seem all that big to me. But then, I don't have a gold shield so I can't give any advice. Why are you worried about it anyway? Hi, I have an older Dell vostro 1510 laptop running Vista 32bit , I started using it recently after my son took my newer one to Uni, anyway, it is freezing every time, not long after the desktop appears.
This does not happen in safe mode.
Thinking it was a software or driver issue I performed a factory settings reset but was surprised to find the issue still exists.
It removed all the software and files that I had put on the laptop and I had to install the graphics card drivers (long story but I changed the motherboard for one that had the intel graphics card instead of the faulty nvidia one) so I assume that it had overwritten/re-installed the operating system? Or could I have to perform a clean install of that to fix the issue? I tried re-seating the 2 ram modules and booting with one then the other on its own but didn't work. Any thoughts or ideas on this would be great, thanks.

Now I want Vista back, but no "Operating System" CD came with my laptop. I only have a partition that's called "RECOVERY" that came with my laptop, but I have no idea how to use that. Even the laptop's manual doesn't tell me how to do it.

Any ideas?

You mean you log in as admin all the time? not very secure. they make admin password access limited for just this reason. Do you know about the built in (hidden) admin account?

Our problem is if it isn't your account (how do we know if it is) by telling you how to circumvent it we would be doing something illegal.

We can certainly tell you how to create a non admin account, easily. do you have any idea what the password was?

I need some help on my Dell Inspiron 1571. Vista is O/S, 2 GS Ram, 260 G , AMD Dual Processor.
At the point of booting up the black screen ask for the restore utility disk. I have tried it several times. Did the Bios to start from CD/DVD- no go. Also, changed to DOS to find the directories of the Dell utility disk and it does not see it. Do you know the fix? Any more information needed? Thanks a million.

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop that came with Windows Vista Premium. At random, unexpected times when I am on it, the whole computer locks up and the screen freezes. The mouse pointer doesn't move. The keyboard locks up. Like I said, it happens unexpectedly and I have no idea why. But here are some things I noticed when this has happened and hopefully you can analyze what I should do to fix this problem. First off, I notice, and I'm not sure the technical name for it, that the outlined cylinder icon that is in line with the power icon and battery icon in the bottom right hand corner of the physical, monitor boarder, does not flash green in spurts like it normally does (which I'm guessing the reason it does is because programs are running in the background). In does not highlight at all, although the power icon is still outlined green. So it is like the lights are on but nobody's home. The second thing I notice is that many times after this happens, the internal fan kicks on to high speed. This I feel is because the internal components are overheated. Is this true? If so, how do I fix this problem or the overall problem of this lockup, if you have any idea what might be it's cause. Thanks very much.

Was using Facebook and clicked on a video that a friend posted.

The video didn't come up, it said the Flash player needed to be updated. Clicked on it.

Then the computer froze. Then it wouldn't let me do anything, no files would open or close.

Shut the computer off and turned it on. Then two new icons had appeared on the desktop. "Run Virus Scan" & "online spyware test"

Tried to start Norton Internet Security. The registation had lapsed, and it said had to renew. Couldn't log on to renew.

But a window in Norton came up to say Trojan Virus and a Severe infection.

Restarted computer in safe mode.

Running Norton Internet Security Full System Scan. It is not finding anything.

A:Running Vista on a Dell Laptop, Trojan Virus?

I think I am dealing with the same or similar Trojan infection now.

I have run:

Norton Internet Utilities.
MBAM
Avast!
superantispyware
ATF Cleaner

and the problem still seems to be present.

Argggh.

I thought it was working, when I could open explorer in the infected machine, but when I went to type in a web address, the keyboard typed gibberish.

I have been at this for several hours, and could use some moral support or technical know how please.

I have seen many problems like this but can't seem to find the answer.
New Dell laptop, Inspiron 1525, works well with wireless and dial up. Taken to work and tried to simply plug into my exisiting broadband server with a working ethernet cord, unplugged it from my working HP win XP and tried making it connect over to the laptop and no luck. It connects to the local network, but then will not move on to the internet/
. I took out Norton and put in AVG after many attempts and someone suggested that Norton was blocking. Have tried putting in IP numbers etc. please any help????!!!!
it has been weeks without answer and I just want to switch from the desktop to a laptop. Is it something in the dell itself or vista program?. I get the famous "error 815" something about the server name, what is that. nothing seems to take.
thanks, help please
Robin

Does your work place have an IT department? If so, they should be consulted.

If instead it's just a free for all at work, what kind of network? Domain? Using auto or static IPs? Can you be more precise about "connects to the local network" and about "will not move on to the internet/"?

You can download windows vista legally from HERE ( originally from Digital River ) and then follow the instruction to create a bootable DVD. You need your own license key to activate it.

Hello,

I'm on a Dell 1537 Laptop which is less than 6 months old, and it's running on Vista. It has the standard sound and video card that came with it.

A week ago, I attached the computer to my new Television which is an insignia with the video cord. As soon as the video cord was removed the blue screen of death appeared with an OxOOOOOO7E error message.

Since then, the error and crash dump have become fairly reliable whenever anything inserted into the computer (USB, video, HDMI) except for the power cord is removed from it.

I have removed all recent files and programs as well as examined my drivers because that was a suggested thing to do on other forum posts.

The same crash dump has recently reared its ugly head without anything being unplugged from the computer, and this usually happens when on the internet and with multiple programs running.

I have attempted a full scan using both McAfee and MalwareByte, but they usually don't go all the way through because the computer crash dumps during the process. I did manage a quick scan on MalwareByte with no problems and it did not solve anything.

I hope you can help! Thanks a lot,
Elliott

Hi; new to the forum so apologies in advance for being clueless.

Massive thanks in advance to anyone who can try to help with my problem!

I've had this laptop just over a year and had no problems until recently, when I restored the machine to factory settings on the advice of a friend who works in IT (I'd had some problems, possibly AVG-related and couldn't boot up at all). No other changes have been made to hardware or software - in other words it's the same setup that's worked fine up until now.

Since restoring the settings the laptop boots to Windows but freezes up completely 2-3 minutes later and I have to power off and try again; I've tried changing power usage and sleep / hibernate settings but the outcome is the same again and again and the amount of time before it freezes isn't sufficient for me to download updates or drives in case that is the problem. Once it freezes I get no response from CTRL+ALT+Delete but if I C/A/D before the freeze I get a black screen (only the pointer visible) for 30 seconds, then an error message box saying "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog - Failure - security options".

A:Dell Inspiron Vista laptop freezing 2 min after startup

Update

Left the laptop on overnight to boot windows normally, since I'd noticed on occasion one or two functions did seem to be working, just extremely slowly. Now I have BSOD w/ messages and can't eneter Safe Mode (the computer restarts and offers me Startup Repair and Boot Normally, both of which lead to the BSOD). The blue screen comes with an error message, sometimes 'This application has failed to start because user32.dll was not found' and the rest of the time 'This application has failed to start because basesrv was not found' .

A few days ago I ran a boot test (diagnostics) at startup and got the following:

[Memory - March U Test]
ErrorCode 0123
Error Code 2000-0123 Memory integrity test failed

Error Code 3600:0749
AC_Adapter_Invalid AC Adapter detected

I haven't physically touched the RAM or any other internals and the AC adapter is the one that came with the laptop, which I've been using without any problems for over a year.

Again, any help would be much appreciated.

When it gets to stage 3 of 3, it says 100% complete and nothing happens. If I manually try to shut it off, it says "Shutting down" ...then I hold down the button and it shuts off. When I turn I turn it back on, the same thing happens........it continues the same thing, 1 of 3, 2 of 3 and 3 of 3.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hello all.

I just got a new 1530 from Dell about a month ago and just yesterday, it started having start up problems. It failed to start once yesterday morning, and I decided to run "start up repair". A few seconds in, it asked if I wanted to use system restore, and I selected yes. However, the start up repair wouldn't stop, so I manually turned off my computer. When I turned it back on, it worked perfectly fine. However, when I tried to use it again later, it booted successfully, but then simply turned off when I tried to connect to a network. When I tried turning it on a few seconds later, it failed to start up again. Using start up repair again, it said it was trying to repair the disk. Although it said "this may take more than an hour to repair", it was still working after I left it on for 12 hours. Frustrated, I turned it off and tried to see if it would start up normally.

In short, it didn't. In fact, it said "Disk read error. Press ctl+alt+del to restart". Upon doing so, it tries to boot, and then displays the same message (Disk read error).

I'm running "pre-boot diagnostics" right now because I really don't know what else to do....

Desperate for help,
LittleBunny

First partition magic doesn't support vista. it was written in the XP hey day and doesn't know how to cope with vista or win 7.

there are many undelete 3rd party applications. You should stop using it untill you retrieve the data

If the data has not been overwrittin you should be able to retrieve some if not all.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop. The keyboard continously "skips". When I type - whether it's in an email, instant messaging, or surfing the net - whe I type, the cursor will suddenly reposition itself to some random place in my previous text. This problem started when the laptop was brand new (it's one year old). I've typed fast, I've typed slow. I've made sure my hand or thumb is not accidentally brushing the touch-pad. I've rebooted, I've reinstalled, all to no avail. Any suggestions? I cannot send the computer back to Dell at this point because I actually took out Vista and installed XP to see if it would fix. I reverted back to Vista, but I'm sure Dell would see what I did and the warranty would be void.

My daughter's Dell Inspiron 1525, service tag J53SWG1. The laptop is running Windows Vista Ultimate with the most recent service pack. (Windows update does not show any available updates.)

The laptop has been giving Blue screen errors for the past 3 -4 weeks. The stop errors are always different. Most of the BSD occur either surfing the web or playing games on Facebook.

I updated the driver's via Dell Support & installed a new copy of McAfee Internet Security. I ran an antivirus scan an it came up clean. I ran Malware bytes scan & it also came back clean.

My daughter uses a cool pad under the laptop, plugged into the USB port, to ensure it stays cool. (I've use the laptop without the cool pad & the laptop did not get hot.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry I didn't know what to put for the subject, and I hope I'm in the right forum. Forgive me if I'm not.

My Dell Inspiron 1420 (Vista) laptop is two years old. About 4 months ago, it started doing something weird. When I'm typing an email, I get a few paragraphs down and the cursor suddenly jumps back up several lines into what I had previously typed and starts typing there. I have to delete the letters and move the cursor back to where I had left off and begin typing again. This happens repeatedly. When I'm writing a private message in Facebook, the same thing happens plus I can only type a few paragraphs and then I can't type any further. Actually, I am typing but the lines are "jumping" and I can't see what I'm typing. It's so hard to describe unless you've seen this in person.

About two months ago, my hard drive crashed. I went to a computer repair guy and he put a new hard drive in and reloaded the software that was on it (which wasn't really anything, as I never did even install my word processing software). Anyway, I was thinking that would solve the problem, but it still does it.

Has anyone come across this or do you understand what I'm explaining that you could help me? It's very frustrating.

Thanks for any help!
Sue

I'm still trying to fix my sister's laptop (more out of sheer determination at this point). I gave up on trying to fix the black screen problem and on trying to get to her files, and did a full Factory Restore... Vista booted up perfectly after that...and then I tred to get online.

Here's what I know: The wireless adapter is enabled (when I press "F2" a little icon pops up with an antenna with waves coming off of it, so I know it's on). When I run the connection utility, it says "Windows cannot find any networks", but my network is fully operational and I am connected to it on my computer, laptop, cell phone, playstation, and tivo, so I know the signal is working. I ran a diagnostic on the adapter and it passed everything, so from that I can see that the computer recognizes it and it is functioning. I also tried to update the driver but still had no luck.

Any other ideas? I'm still floating with the idea of wiping vista and using my OEM CD to install XP, but I want to make sure the thing is functioning properly first. Any suggestions are appreciated.

A:Dell laptop w/ Vista doesn't recognize wireless network

Hi liguy,

OK, on the laptop:

1. In Network and Sharing Center, is Network Discovery turned on?

2. In Manage Network Connections, are there any other connections shown besides your wireless? Any with a red X; if so, disable it.

3. If the above is all OK, open a command window (Start, Run, type Cmd in Open: Box and click OK). In the command window type ipconfig /all (space between g and /, no space after /), right click on window, click on select all, right click on window icon at top left, select edit > copy, and paste result in your reply.

Please let us know one way or another.

I have a home network with an computer using an XP operating system and it is networked via a Linksys WRT54GS router. I also have another desktop that uses windows Vista Home Premuim. Between the two machines we use either a Lexmark e232 and or a HP G85 printer. There has never been a printing or shring issue between these two computers. I was recently given a Dell 922 Printer and bout a Gateway M-Series laptop running Vista Home premium. For the life of me, I can't get the laptop to print via network with the Dell. The laptop doesn't have any problem adding and or printing to the other 2 printers.
The error I keep getting is 0x0000000d. I tried the registry fix that Microsoft recomments, but with no luck. Any help or guidance is appreciated.

A:Can't network a Dell 922 between and XP server computer and a laptop with Vista Home

This is a procedure that I've had success with installing Vista printers when the normal install didn't work.
Temporarily connect the printer to the Vista machine and install it as a local printer using the proper Vista drivers.
Disconnect the printer and move it to the XP machine it normally connects to and make sure that it's configured as a shared printer.
Open the Printers and Faxes folder on the Vista machine, right click on the printer and select properties.
Create a new Local Port for this printer with a name of the full network path name to the shared printer, i.e. \\computer_name\printer_name.

I have a Dell XPS M1330 with Windows Vista. I recently started a project which requires a lot of video editing and was handed a JVC GY-HD101E camera. Everything has gone smoothly except I can't seem to import my videos from the camera to my computer through Windows Movie Maker and the IEEE 1394 (firewire) port. When I start my computer with the firewire cable plugged in, a window appears in Windows which says "Installing driver software" and the new hardware is identified as a "Digital Still Camera". The first step of the install is called "Searching preconfigured driver folders..." and it usually fails within 30 seconds. However I was able to go further in the process one time. I deleted the file called INFCACHE.1 in the C:/Windows/inf/ folder which seems (according to my net research) to have caused a lot of driver problems. After restarting the process began again and got to the second step which was searching through windows update for a driver, a driver was found which seemed to be downloaded and the installed, so the process finished. However it didn't seem to change anything since Windows Movie Maker didin't find any camera and when I restarted the driver process began again and failed once again.

I also tried connecting the camera to a friends iBook but it didn't even find the camera.

I have spent the better part of the last two days searching the web for clues for how to fix this but I have yet been unsuccesful. The... Read more

Hey all,

Windows Vista shutting, forcing an update on me and I had to turn off computer at that moment so I manually shut it down. Launched it again and Vista was unable to boot, so I put in installation CD and did a repair. Then Vista installed but it now lacked the drivers needed for network adapter.

I installed the Realtek RTL8168/8111 but still I cannot connect to internet with wireless. Under other devices the following have explamation points:
Mass Storage Controller
Network Contorller
SM Bus Controller
Video Controller

The computer is a vostro 1520 dell laptop. All hardware on it is the defaults that came with computer.

Thanks for response.

There should be a service tag located on the laptop's bottom. Surf over to Dell's support site (Dell - Drivers and Downloads) and input the service tag. You should be able to download the drivers you are missing.

To whom it may concern...
My brother in laws daughter was playing games and has accidentally pressed some wrong button on his laptop changing the orientation of the monitor image. I'm a MacUser running Vista on Parallels... and I have been trying to figure out how to fix it for them. I have gone into Control Panel and then into Monitors... as I was hoping there would be a setting to rotate the monitor view.... but no such luck. Can anyone tell me how I can fix this... as his daughter also needs to have it working for school assignments.

Any comments most welcome...

I have experienced a lot of problems when I first attempted to install XP on on my laptop which came with windows vista preloaded. I somehow managed to setup dual boot.

The problem then was to find the right drives for me dell XPS m1330 laptop. Dell would not support for XP.

So what did I do? I wrote two posts on my blog with step by step procedures to:

1. install XP on a vista laptop
2. XP drivers for Dell XPS m1330

Hello
My husband uses Chrome and it is running very slow. Firefox seems unaffected.
I recently wiped my computer after a nasty virus and have been trying out various security systems recently trying to decide what I want to buy. Currently using trial version of Avast. Can I install WinXP Pro from older Dell laptop on to new Dell laptop?

I am using a Dell Inspiron 8200 right now and in order to save some money on my new Dell laptop, I'd like to order Home or MediaCenter with the new computer and then install WinXP Pro myself instead of paying the extra $119 to have them do it. Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

A:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Battery plugged in not charging. Can I use adapter from a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop ?

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

While I have been a loyal IE user for years I have given up on IE9 and returned to IE8 because I have just found IE9 much too unreliable. Sample issues with sites (including some major commercial sites) that do not occur with IE8 or Firefox include:

1. Scripts on websites that don't run, or hang.

2. Website section tabs that do not work.

3. Ordinary random hyperlinks that require using the control key to make them work and then when they do come up they come up under the page I am viewing rather than on top as they should. (This always happens with links that require control key use in IE9.)

4. Links to pdf documents, such as statements from financial institutions, that show the first page of the document as a blank white page instead of displaying the actual content.

And again, none of these problems occur on these same sites when I use other browsers on the same machines.

Problem:

XP assigns the same IRQ to my video, sound, wireless pci adaptor, and 1394 host controller. I want to assign just one IRQ to major devices such as video and sound, and to the PCI wireless adapter card as well.

Symptoms:

Graphical hitching and hang-ups
Frequent loss of internet connection over wireless network (never happened before on my older comp)

Attempted Solutions:

I have physically switched the pci cards (I only have 2 pci slots) and the other configuration had the vid card and wireless adapter on the same IRQ, not separate, which is better, but still not what I need it to be.

Tried assigning IRQ's in BIOS. XP just switches them back thanks to ACPI.

Thinking about disabling ACPI (probably a bad idea) and assigning IRQ's myself in BIOS??

Also, (and I really dont want to do this) if I format my XP drive then assign IRQ's in the BIOS, then install Windows again will XP keep my IRQ preferences?
System Specs:

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254)

A:IRQ Frustrations

Look in Device Manager under "Computer". If it shows ACPI Uniprocessor or ACPI Multiprocessor, I have never seen an IRQ conflict ( and I have built a lot of PCs).

Switching to "Standard PC" and trying to set the IRQs manually will usually cause more problems than you had before. And trying to switch back from Standard PC to ACPI is near impossible. I would look someplace else.

Can you elaborate on the problem you are trying to solve?

Hoping you can help a desperate household with three web surfing and gaming teenagers. Somehow, something has installed itself and is hiding. I've uninstalled all obvious programs in Control Panel and deleted their related directories, yet every day we have to kill 40+ ads. I worked some more tonight on this but after running Hijack This see that there are some culprits still clinging (seeing I-Lookup even though I downloaded and ran their uninstall program). The ads coming up have just IE in the title - looking at properties tells me "cdn2.adsdk.com".

Really, really, hope you can help by telling me what to delete.

I can't download any links. I tried doing an online scan but I get a quick pop-up (that I can't read) and the window closes. I tried to load one program and it told me to enable the ActiveX from the menu bar--I had no yellow bar. I checked my ActiveX settings and they are fine.

Now I have trouble even keeping a IE window open. I'll be working along just fine and then the window will close. I'm going into surfing withdrawal! Please help.

BTW, I have IE 6.0, and Windows XP--not sure which service pack. Also, please list your steps slowly--I'm blonde and getting old : )

I have a new laptop (~2 months old now) it came with windows 8 which I upgraded to 8.1.

I find that windows occasionally takes a really long time to load from the login screen,
or firefox will hand when trying to open,
or videos will hang for a second and then go wonky for a seconds when the laptop is moved or bumped.

I'm wondering if adding in a SSD and dumping windows on it will fix these problems. I really don't want to spend any more money on the thing, but these annoyances are getting to me... Luckily the Laptop has an extra bay for an additional HD so space isn't an issue.

I'm just not familiar enough with the root cause of windows 8 issues to tell if this will help or not. Any insights would be greath!

They use Windows XP Drivers.

6) But Windows Media Player recognizes the media and allows us to burn
music to the CD-R or CD-RW. Records it and ejects the CD-that it is
supposed to do. The only thing it will not do is allow me to copy data.
Weird and frustrating.

This is something I've been searching for an answer to for many months now.

I want to have my TV set up as a second screen, i cant get it to work no matter what I do, ive got it plugged into my Video in on the TV (although I've tried pretty much every socket, including the YbGrwhatsit) - I've tried using an AV adaptor and plugging it in via a standard AV. I've tried with 5 TV's now and 2 Graphics cards (A Radeon 1550 and my new GeForce 9500) - My computer doesn't detect any of the TV's, (even though the latest one is a 42" HD TV.) I've tried forcing it to output to TV and even that doesn't work.

What on earth is going on. Is it something very simple im missing?

Couple of notes in case it makes a difference.
Im in the UK.
Using XP Pro SP2
Im using a S-Video wire (I believe thats what its called)

Any help at all is greatly appreciated!

Ok, so as posted on here before, I had a whole mess of problems with Windows 7 Pro 64bit that I didn't have with RC, and don't seem to have with Home 64bit on the other computers.

First was Adobe CS3 not working. It would install, but when I'd go to launch any of the programs nothing would happen. The process world run but I'd never get so much as the load screen. This wouldn't work in the admin or my account but would work in Virtual XP.

Next up was Office 2k7. It would work fine in admin but I'd get "Microsoft Office has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application." I got that to go away but Word won't open files unless it's already open, otherwise I get "There was a problem sending a document to the program". And whenever I do launch an Office program I get the annoying installer/configure ever time. Keep in mind this all works no problems in admin mode.

Now I got o burn a music CD with WMP and it tells me "connect a burner and restart". I go to admin mode and it's fine.

:Edit:
Now that I've gone back to my account it works

--

Honestly though, as someone who loved Windows 7 RC, and the Home premium installs on other computers at home seem fine, it's just really frustrating having so many issues with my copy.

So...should I format, reinstall and try again? Just use the admin account permanently? Make my account full admin (if that's even possible)? I dunno.

Hey guys...

I've been having difficulty with brightness and video for some time now. I've maxed out the brightness on my monitor and I've managed to lighten up my desktop and desktop applications, but there are still some things that stay awfully dark, such as games (when I start up a fullscreen game, the gamma resets to the same level as it was before I tweaked it for desktop applications) and DVDs (I have tried the overlay control, but my computer crashes as soon as I change anything). The games are simply too dark to play and have no feature in them to change how bright they are (or console commands etc.).

I am using an NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 and I have some knowledge of computers and hardware, but this one leaves me stumped. Overall, I am very pleased with this card, but these problems are quite frusterating (I'm sure other people have dealt with this problem before too) and I would appreciate any advice or help.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

A:Video Frustrations

I want to think it might be a problem with the monitor, but I'm leaning more toward the video card, possibly the drivers. You said you were getting crashes, this leans toward drivers. If it were simply the monitor dying it wouldn't cause a crash I wouldn't think. Try updating your display drivers, or if you recently did, roll them back. There is always the possibility that it is the video card itself, it could simply be a bad card, or if you've tweaked it, something could have gone wrong or the fan may have gone bad and mucked up the chip.

I would try the drivers though, that sounds like the most likely cause.

I no longer trust it. If it cannot properly Backup, how can I trust it to Recover in time of need?
Does anyone know of a product the actually works? User friendly and follows the Kiss Principle. What price? Just paid a good chunk for this and do not relish paying more to "see if it works"!

On another note. Reason I wanted to backup is to apply the service pack for XP. This been working OK? Been waiting, hoping by now the glitches had been worked out with a current D-Load.

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!
Please close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix and make sure you are disconnected from the Internet after downloading the program and before scanning.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.

Download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have ComboFix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running ComboFix.

I am growing more and more frustrated with IE9, both from the standpoint of browsing and from the standpoint of managing websites myself. Issues encountered with IE9, but not with IE8 or Firefox on the very same site include:

1. The way beyond annoying "net-nanny" requirement to use the control key when clicking on some harmless links in well trusted websites.

2. Having the linked page then show up underneath the page I was viewing instead of on top of it as I would expect and desire (and where every other browser puts it).

3. Having linked pdf files show up as just white space, pdfs that work flawlesssly with other browsers. (And that happens with some major sites too, i.e., Chase Bank, not just small "mom and pop" sites.)

4. Scripts that won't run (although they work fine with every other browser), and which IE9 does not inform you have been blocked or give you the option of running.

A:IE 9 problems & frustrations

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I'm not sure what you want exactly...? A few thoughts, though:

1. Hmm, actually haven't encountered this. Maybe you could add the websites in question to your trusted zone, though.

2. Not experienced this either. You can set IE9 to open new pages in tabs instead of windows, that might help.

3. Unlike other browsers, IE9 will use ActiveX-based plugins. Maybe the plugin that comes with your PDF reader is not registered correctly or not working right.

4. What kind of scripts?

My son had a Windows 7 box with a 1 TB hard Drive partitioned with separate Swap / Temp (D), Gamed (E), Programs (E), and Data (F) drive partitions. This has served us well in the past as reinstalling the OS. To restore programs and games under the replaced / upgraded OS, we simply installed over themselves keeping all custom files, saved games etc.

He recently added a 120 GB SD for Windows and his most used programs / games. The idea was to keep the original boot partition on the hard drive as a backup (only 64 GB) in case the SSD went south. The same user name was used on both Win7 professional 64 bit installs.

My problem is that trying to install some programs over themselves or even to delete folders on F:\ results in permissions issues that can't seem to be resolved in the normal properties / security / advanced / editing fashion.

Suggestions ?

A:Permission Frustrations

You are going to have to take ownership of the drive's files manually, and change the permisisons. I take it you did a clean windows installation onto the SSD, and added the 1TB drive as a data drive?

You will have to change the permissions from advanced options under security, see attached, and click the circled check box. This way you will not have to do it for each folder within the folder you are changing as well.

With TakeOwnership.zip, open the .zip file, and run AddTakeOwnership (I think that's what it is called, it will be obvious though if it is not) and right click on the folders you want to change permissions on, and select take ownership.

Problem is .. on 'this', my other pc .. the screen capture image has perfect colors!??

The posted image in the forums shows up as perfect too.
They Must Think That I Am Nutts!!

Yes, the other pc has been connected and tried on several other, brand new monitors and has the same washed out crappy colors.

All the cables are new too.

Thanks for allowing me to Rant!!

I bought a new beefish laptop with intel i7, geforce graphics card and the hardware is working well however for the past 2 months I haven't been able to use win 10 apps. I can't view pics, play music, vids and a bunch of other apps simply do not open. I get an error message...

I can't restart the PC to an earlier date. I also can't reset the PC to factory settings. Windows 10 simply refuses to allow me to do this.

My computer stats are as follows

Processor: i7 6700HQ
Memory 12.0GB (11.9 useable)
System: 64 bit X64

USB is 3.0

Again my pc restore options wont go back long enough. My factory reset settings calls for me to restore from a backup but following the steps retrieves an error.

Please help. I have a 4 month old laptop that basically doesn't function because of this windows 10 store. I consider myself semi computer literate but I've tried everything I can think of to no avail.

To use the Microsoft Store and Apps, you must be signed in with a Microsoft Account, (eg) a Live or Hotmail Email address. Please log out and login with a Microsoft account.
If you are logged in with a Microsoft account and still have problems, go to Start/Search and type CMD, Right click the CMD results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt, type SFC /scannow and press enter. this will replace any missing system files.

Well, I thought I would jump on board again yesterday, as my wife's computer downstairs had a hard drive crash 2 days ago and needed to be reloaded. I went ahead and loaded Windows 8 on her machine, as after all, her machine is primarily for entertainment.. ie watching movies, music, games, facebook, etc.. We don't do a ton of multi-tasking on her machine. It is our play computer. So I loaded it up, and was looking forward to being wow'd. Here is what I am facing. I am hoping these problems are just my own ignorance, and are easily solve-able.

1) Our Netflix account is based on my email, but I tried to base the downstairs computer off of my wife's email. Unfortunately, Microsoft will not even let me install the netfix app on my wife's computer, as her email is not associated with it. That's it. No option for me to use my email and load the app on my wife's computer. So eventually, I tried changing her to an offline account, and using my email as a microsoft account, just so I could get get the netflix app loaded. This worked, but it really caused a host of other problems, like now the mail app is all associated with me, etc. What a stupid mess.

2) After getting netflix app installed, my wife and I settled in last night to watch a Grey's Anatomy. Unfortunately, try as I might, I could not get the app to move over and display on our large 60 inch screen rather, than on our 22 inch pc monitor. I tried making the 60 inch the primary monitor under screen resol... Read more

Also.. why can't I just close an app by pressing x in the upper right corner any more. If they felt like it was UN-sightly, the hide it unless I move the mouse there, but I should not have to grab the top of the screen and drag down to the bottom, every time I want to close one of these new applications. This is an insult to all mouse users.

on some older programs, curiously I got this message:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\autoexec.nt. This file is not suitable for running DOS and Windows programs. Click "Close" to terminate the application.Click to expand...

I said to myself, "wtf mates?!" and got the file AUTOEXEC.NT off the Windows CD. Now I'm getting this:

The Win16 Subsystem was unable to enter Protected Mode, DOSX.EXE must be in your AUTOEXEC.NT and present in your PATH. Click to expand...

Anyone have any sort of idea what the devil is going on here?

Thanks,

EDIT: AUTOEXEC.NT was VERY curiously not in /System32 on the computer in the first place!

I have formatted Windows 8.1 many times (Installing Windows 8 then upgrade to 8.1 which is a pain)
I formatted again recently after buying 2 new ssds. (for storage not for the OS)
Anyway, these are my usual Windows 8.1 install steps -

1) Install W8
2) Install intel network drivers to gain internet access
3) Install Windows updates
4) Install W8.1
5) Install intel network drivers again along all remaining drivers.

Recently after formatting to 8.1 I started to install my drivers in order. For some reason the Intel network card drivers would freeze my system when trying to install. I had to hard reboot to get back to windows. Again it would freeze my pc upon installing the network drivers. I resolved it by installing the drivers from the device manager.
But if I tried to uninstall the drivers, my pc would freeze?
I then installed my Corsair Link drivers.....and again my pc froze, hard reboot again. what is causing these freezes? My motherboard?
I formatted 4 more times and I had driver corruption and freezing every time.
I then tested just on Windows 8 without 8.1

1) Install W8
2) Install intel network driver and all remaining drivers
3) Install W8 updates

Now my Windows 8 installation is fine, everything installed perfectly I am concerned whether to upgrade to W8.1 incase it corrupts my ALREADY installed drivers.

Is the update to Windows 8.1 corrupting my system? It never used to. Should I buy a standalone Windows 8.1 disc?
Is anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks ... Read more

A:Recent frustrations going from Windows 8 to 8.1

You may want to check for an updated Intel network driver - not all drivers that work for windows 8 - work properly with windows 8.1

And there is no longer a need to install windows 8 and then upgrade to windows 8.1

Just download and create windows 8.1 setup media - it now reads win 8 and win 8.1 keys

Hey all
So first off I have the home computer (XP) and my computer (7). I have a Bigpond 2wire 2071-A modem, a Belkin N Wireless router (F5D8233-4v3) and a Belkin N USB wireless adaptor (F5D8023 v3). My computer (7) has the wireless adaptor.
On both computers while either watching video or downloading, it will cut out for a split second but thats enough to stop it loading/downloading. Lately my computer has being connecting but will have 'No Internet Access' and I need to reset the adaptor to get it back.
Everything is updated but I don't know much about configuring the firewalls etc...
Any ideas?

May help to make sure you have the latest router firmware; then reset the router to factory default settings and reconfigure it.

Is the router losing its connection with the modem/ISP, or are the computers losing connection to the router? If the latter, how are the computers connected and do they lose connection at the same time?

I really LOVE a dynamic desktop & it was one of the reasons I originally upgraded to Win 7, but I'm sure I'm not alone in the way it's set up. I sometimes point it to folders with upwards of 800 pics, & invariably as I work through unticking those I don't want I accidentally miss & the whole lot are then unticked. Cancel & start over only for it to happen just as I'm about to save my new selection !!

And why oh WHY does it keep closing out after you save?

Anyway I could fill a book with my irritations so figure it's about time i see if there's any Reg hacks or tips etc, or maybe an easier alternative program that might just function properly with some more options e.g. view pics full size so that you can better determine whether you want them included (fine on a laptop where you can scale them all up)

Anyone help me out? Am I missing something?
Thanks

Create a new folder and just put the pics you want to use in there, 800 is wayyyy to many select that folder for your desktop pics. Of course you need pics with the proper resolution.

I'm trying to make it so that Navigation pane would be disabled whenever I open folder shortcuts, such as music, documents, pictures, but I want to keep it enabled when I got to My computer or Windows explorer. However it seems that its either enabled or disabled for all folders. Any way to fix that?

Also, is there anyway to make windows remember each folders individual settings? It seems whenever I open a folder, and resize it, any other folder will open exactly the same size as the previous open folder. I believe even Windows XP had an option to remember folder settings.

This excelent feature we had in XP, was taken out of 7.
In point of fact, the more one uses Windows Explorer the more I hate it.

So far no fix but there are a couple of apps out there that will lock size and position of any window when its re opened.

Hello,

I just want to say thank you for reading my concern. The technology community has and will continue to change the world. I am grateful for any help offered.

I am growing frustrated with my performance on my machine, and I am looking for some pointers.

I currently have two hard disks and three partitions. The largest disk, a 200Gb but high performance Seagate drive (I don't have the specs, but I didn't buy on the side of value, rather I bought for performance), has a small partition that holds the Operating System and Applications. This is the primary partition. I also have a relatively large partition to hold documents and multimedia content. My second hard disk is an older drive that I backup to on a weekly basis.

My performance gripes concern overall cpu performance. For example, when I am listening to Windows Media Player (v 10), and I open Firefox, the music will skip. Same thing happens when I close it. Also, as I type in Word the music will "blip" occasionally when I type quickly (I am using a wired Keyboard). Additionally, Explorer is pretty unreliable. If I leave the computer on for a few days, it is almost guaranteed to crash a few times, and sometimes the machine resets in the middle of the night when I am sleeping.

I am a decently advanced user (A Computer Engineer), so I understand most of the concepts of performance and it bewilders me why my machine seems to be "underperforming."

I understand that these concerns can b... Read more

I'm close to my wits end, can someone out there please help me?

My system has contracted rotating BSOD syndrome and I cant seem to fix it.
No matter what I try to do, I get a DIFFERENT BSOD each time, always after the loading XP screen, right before u would 'normally' see the blue "welcome" screen. Some of the BSOD's include:

"Page_Fault_IN_NONPAGED_AREA"
"PFN_LIST_CORRUPT"
"A thread tried to release a resource it did not own."
"the windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly."

This strikes me as very strange, as I have 3 SEPARATE installs of XP on my system -each on a SEPARATE hard drive. The extra 2 are purely barebones backups that have almost nothing installed on them. Each OS has its own exclusive partition on a diff drive, and yet they all seem affected.

Even stranger: sometimes one of my OS's load up correctly. If my system is turned off for a period of time, it seems I have about a 10% chance of it loading to desktop OK. But the desktop only "lasts" for about a minute or 2 before another BSOD. And, even weirder, about an hour ago, one of the backup OS loaded perfectly fine, out of the blue, and stable too. it mentioned something about installing "new hardware." But now I cant get it back! Because my system defaults to automatic restart, it keeps on restarting and crashing like on a loop, eventually with it actually loading fine.

Also weird is that booti... Read more

Recently, the company my dad works for decided to start phasing out some of their IDE drives/drive arrays for SATAs. Well, one of those batches of drives were 15-20 320 GB Maxtors. I was a temp at the time. So, while I was waiting for my supervisor to need me, I took the time to remove the drives from their caddies. My dad told me that the drives were ready to use and just needed to be partitioned. No they weren't. They needed to be initialized. No problem. I've got an IDE-to-USB adapter I can use. I tried initializing the drives with the jumper optioned set two ways: jumpered (master) and unjumpered (slave). Yes, I unplugged the drive before switching between settings. I kept on getting a message similar to "I/O Device Error". I tried both combination's across three different computers (if some information seems to be lacking, the computers are in use and I'm giving information based on what I can recall): DELL Inspiron 9300 (2 GB RAM, Pentium M 1.60 GHz, Win 7), Intel D845GBV (512 MB DDR, Pentium 4 1.60 GHz, Win XP), and Intel D865PERL (1+ GB DDR, Pentium 2+ GHz, Win XP). No luck. I told my dad the problem and gave him two drives to see if he could do anything with them. He unjumpered them (slave) and hooked them up to his laptop via IDE-USB. I believe he has a Vostro somewhere between 1220 and 1720 with Win XP installed , but not a V13. He got them to the point that they just needed drive letters. My question is what was I not doing, lacking t... Read more

I have tried everything I know to be able to play Half-Life 2, including buying a new computer. I made sure the computer had everything the game needed and it still will not work. It says I have an unsupported video card and that the video hardware does not meet the requirements that were set for the game. The computer is a new Dell but I still went through Intel to update the video drivers. I made sure we had Direct X 9c. I have contacted Steam and they sent me a generic form email with things to try. I have tried the ideas they suggested but it still will not work. I heard this was such a great game but it has frustrated me to much. Does anyone have suggestions?

Hello, guys. This is my first time posting here, and I hate to ask for help out of the blue like this, but I'm completely stuck with this one.

My problem goes thusly: I've been running Zone Alarm Pro for quite a few months on my computer, occasionally putting up with the bug that disables the internet connection while ZA is running (it's generally easy to fix -- close and re-run Zone Alarm), but without many issues. Recently, however, Zone Alarm has developed an annoying habit of stalling my connection. Upon further experimentation, I found out that it only happens while I web page is loading: If I open Zone Alarm, and then open Internet Explorer or Opera, my homepage will stop loading halfway through, and none of my online programs (browsers, Trillian, anything that needs a connection) will function. The same thing happens if I open Zone Alarm with a browser alraedy open and try to go to a different page. As soon as the TrueVector service initializes, the problem starts.

It's a very recent thing, and I haven't installed any new software or hardware lately, besides Opera (to test this very problem) and a cooler for my video card.

I'm using Windows XP, Internet Explorer 6.0.whatever, Opera 6.04 (both browsers cause the problem), and I'm on a DSL connection with a LinkSys router (I don't have either of the built-in software protections, Zone Alarm and PC-Cillin, enabled). I have 2 computers hooked up to a 5-port hub, along with a cable internet connection. The ethernet cards on both computers are working correctly, however I can't get the two computers to see each other on the network. Both workgroup names are identical. I have TCP/IP and NetBEUI installed on both computers, with TCP/IP being the default protocol on both computers, my Primary Network Logon is Client for Microsoft Networks on both computers (yes, I enter a password!) and I have enabled file and printer sharing, and have shared drives and printers for both computers. On the Windows 98 computer's Network Neighborhood, it always shows itself, and I have occasionally (after the other computer being on for some time) seen the Win95 computer in Network Neighborhood, but have not been able to connect to it. The Win95 computer has never been able to see the Win98 computer, but was once able to see itself in Network Neighborhood (until I changed something...). I have tried lots of things, including setting the Win98 computer up as the browse-master, and disabling that on the Win95 computer, but nothing seems to work. In addition, the presence of the Cable internet connection complicates things, because I can't change the Win98 computer's IP, or remove TCP/IP, if I want to keep my internet connection! Can anyone help?

1.  You may have no idea that there is something called "Lenovo Settings". When you click on the Windows start icon (bottom left) you can see "Settings", but click on the "All Apps" option at the bottom and navigate to the "L"s and you should see "Lenovo Settings". 2.  Your microphone may be switched OFF. So no amount of shouting at Cortana will get a response; at this point, asking Cortana to "Open settings" would be really useful!  To turn the microphone ON, go to "Lenovo Settings" (see above) and either: On Home page click on the microphone icon at top right, or the "Audio/Media" icon half way down the icons list on the left. 3.  You may have to press the "Fn" key (bottom left, to right of "Ctrl") to use function keys F1 etc. Searching documentation, Cortana, etc. is fruitless and web/forum not much better. The answer, of course, is "Lenovo Settings" - click on the "Input" icon 4th down in the icons list on the left. There should be an item "FUNCTION KEYS" where you can select the action of the 1st 13 keys (F1 to F12 plus Esc) in the top row of your keyboard. 4.  While you're setting the function keys, you should see the "KEYBOARD BACKLIGHT" item. Long way round to toggle key-lighting on/off. Quick way: Press "Fn" + space bar, together. Good luck guys, apologies if there are some differences for non-Yoga 3 machines.

I've been using XMarks for a long time to back up my bookmarks. I have another PC which I want to back up my bookmarks from as well. Uploading bookmarks from one computer or the other (different browsers), overrides the other computers bookmarks. I've contacted XMarks support regarding this problem; unfortunately there solution doesn't work. I'm done my share of searching for an alternative, which can fill these gaps.

A:Bookmark Syncing frustrations

I don't know which browser(s) you are using, but I'll give it as if you are using Firefox. Go to the Add-ons page (or if you have the button on your toolbar just right click it from there). Open the Xmarks menu options. There is a tab for Profiles. What you need to do if you don't want the exact same bookmarks on all computers is to create a different profile for each computer you want to back up. You can also go to the Sync tab, and un-check the auto sync feature, but next time you do sync, it will override the bookmarks on the computer. The best way is through the Profiles manager. You can create multiple profiles, and even change profiles on existing computers back and forth.

Obviously since I'm here writing in this forum we all know that, THAT didnt happen! I also checked my IRQ and noticed that my graphics card was on 11 and so was my modem....tried to change that but my computer hates me .... and I hate my computer. tiamakki,

Welcome to TSG.

Could it be possible that the new card was not seated properly?

You could try uninstalling the old card driver, shutdown, and install new card.

Some motherboards require a Garth or APG Controller driver, if it is not present the driver will install but not operate.

Is this a name brand computer? If so make and model# might be useful.

I have a client with 100 older Windows machines, all set up on a workgroup "Office". They can see each other in the "My Network Places/View Workgroup Computers" option in WinXP.

Some of these in the Workgroup allow access to their files; others prompt for a username and password. Huh?

OK, now I added another 10 new XP machines; once I updated their Workgroup name to "Office" some of them appear on the Workgroup list and others do not. Of those that appear, some prompt for username and password; others do not; yet others are "Not accessible; you may not have permission to view these files."

Some of the new computers have the option "Make my folders private" checkmarked and greyed out while others have no checkmark. I cannot find a way to uncheck those greyed out machines.

All of the new machines have "Enable simple file sharing (Recommended)" selected.

Yeah yeah, i know -- use Linux. I cannot. This isn't my choice here, and its just a huge frustration trying to get XP and the workgroup to act like a basic, unfettered workgroup.

I want access to everything, everywhere. But no matter which way I configure the options, some machines work and others do not. Is there one set of basic settings that I should have? And how do i uncheck the "Make Private" option for users My Documents folders?
