Reliability Monitor crashes Windows Explorer, event name BEX64

Q: Reliability Monitor crashes Windows Explorer, event name BEX64

Hi everybody,

On the laptop listed in my sig, Windows Explorer will crash and reset itself while trying to load the Reliability Report from the Windows Action Center. This just started today and doesn't happen every single time when generating the report. It only happens when I exit out of the report and then reload it very fast by pressing the back and forward keys in quick succession on my mouse. When I do this, the window will hang on the screen with the green loading bar that says "Reliability Monitor is generating the report. Please wait..." and a new popup will appear telling me that Windows Explorer has crashed and is resetting itself. I would be very grateful if somebody can please interpret the error report of this incident and tell me how I can fix the problem.

Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
Expand Custom Views
Click Administrative Events
Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
When asked, save the display information in English.
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Create a new folder by right clicking in a blank area within the folder Errors.evtx is saved in. You could also click New Folder at the top of the directory under the directory path box.
Name the new folder Errors.
Place Errors.evtx and the LocaleMetaData folder into the new Errors folder.
Right click the Errors folder -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file here.

Hi all,

Since upgrading to Win 10, I have noticed that with most (but not all) system shutdowns and restarts, it result in a nice red X with the 'Windows was not properly shut down" Clicking on it gives no clues, just says "The previous shutdown at [time] on [date] was unexpected.

There is no other indication other than what the Reliability Monitor reports. I would not even be aware there was an issue. The PC starts as normal with no errors on every boot. Any ideas on what might be causing this?

A:Reliability Monitor shows constant Windows crashes

Try running sfc /scannow using the command prompt with admin privileges. If the results of running this command line executable results in some errors found but window was unable to correct them then run the dism commands given here:
DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image - Windows 10 Forums You will not know the results of this repair action for a day or so because the reliability monitor needs 24 hours to report a new condition of your OS.

Hello and welcome to Sevenforums.
Having crashes upon the .explorer usually reveals problems in the Windows Context Menu. I'd suggest you to download a software called ShellExView. The idea of ShellExView is to figure out, what shell extension is causing your explorer to crash.Use the software with this procedure- Disable one extension that doesn't belong to Microsoft. In many cases there are running 3rd party shell extension along Windows, and may cause the crash. If the crash persist, undo the selection, and proceed to the next non-Microsoft extension. Keep doing so, until you've found the culprit.

Download Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes will investigate malware and worm targets, and try to remove them. It's very handy in that manner.Run a full scan of it twice or more. In many cases it won't detect malware in the first shot.

To ensure Windows isn't broken, we'll recommend the sfc /scannow command. Here's how- Press Start | search 'cmd' | Right-click it
| open as Admin | type SFC /SCANNOW

SFC /scannow

If the steps didn't work, Create a new User Account on your system. The current user account you're using, may be broken and corrupted.

Best Regards,

To be clear, this occurs when right-clicking or pressing the context menu key on files and folders only. It does not display an issue when right-clicking on the desktop or the recycle bin, or the taskbar even. Right-clicking in programs like Firefox shows no problem either. It is only on folders or files.

The only recent software addition I made was to add Lightning to the Mozilla Thunderbird Application, but this is not showing signs of a problem either.

I've run ShellMenuView, and see that a couple of items here have the File Name item as "%1" - which seems a little odd. Does this mean they are bad links and I should remove or disable them? For example:

I check Reliability Monitor from time to time. I was taken aback today to find Windows Mail creating a critical event and appearing as 'Stopped working' each day for the past six days. There are five listings on day one, five on day two, two on day three, one on day four, two on day five and two on day six. 'Check for a solution' provides no solution. I do have to close and reopen Windows Mail on some occasions when it is stuck at 'Connecting'. The second attempt usually results in Windows Mail receiving mail. That, however, has been a situation that I have lived with for a long time and I am unaware that it caused a critical event in the past. Now, it seems, a critical event is created each time I open Windows Mail. That, I can monitor now I know it is happening but I wondered whether anyone can throw more light on this matter.
Please move this to 'Performance and Maintenance' if more appropriate.

Sorry for my dilatory reply. According to these analyze results, this problem indeed caused by duser.dll which belongs to Windows DirectUI Engine.
To resolve this problem, firstly, try to run Sfc /scannow command to fix system componments for test.
If no use, it would be better to access Windows Recoveroy mode to make system repair.
In addition, generally speaking, system dll file won't have problem, have you installed any app in your system that may harm to system file before this problem occures? If that it is, please try to uninstall it for test.

Hello. I know that you're not supposed to provide a hjt log here, and I won't. Mine is pretty clean and I've inspected every single entry in it. I'll just post here what I've been posting all over the Internet trying to find help with since nobody seems to have an idea (or care-one of the two):

I've worked for 4 days on this problem off and on and found no working solution yet. To make it short and sweet, if I right-click on any folders or on the hard drive icons in My Computer explorer.exe freezes. This is what the Event Viewer tells me about this issue:

I can click on any files and on the desktop without any problem, and the context menus seem to work fine. I've used ShellExView to look at the context menu handlers, icon handlers, and property sheet handlers, but don't see anything wrong. I've tried disabling all of the context menu handlers--no change. I've tried disabling the other handlers from third parties and still no change.

Hi dukemalisto and welcome to TSF

It seems to me you are either having really bad hardware failure or your O.S. is really pooched. You can try these things to determine which is going on.

First, find the manufacturer of your hard drive and run their Hard Drive Diagnostics Utility.. If everything turns up ok then I would suggest to Perform a Repair Installation

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

1.When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6.Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

If you have xp sp2 installed it needs to be incorporated into your xp disk or it will not offer the repair option only the clean install.

Hi all,

Just curious if anyone can tell me how reliability viewer is setup to view on remote win7 PC's.

I can go into Perfmon and connect to a remote PC, but when I right click on monitor to view reliability report it just opens my local machine report.

The RAC task is running on all PC, so the RACagent is up and going. I followed the technet instructions, but nothing I do seems to bring up the remote PC report. I can run the system diags on the remote PC and get all the correct info, so I know part of this is working. Its just reliability monitor that will not work correctly.

A:Reliability Monitor

I was curious so i played with this, and i see the Reliability Monitor history for the remote PC.
I started the remote Reliability Monitor program by typing reliability in the search box and clicking on View reliability history.

I'm a Home user, using TeamViewer free for remote access/help.

I connected from a Win 7 OS, to a remote PC running Win 7.
Your specs show Win 10 OS, i haven't tested with that.

The Reliability Monitor of Windows 7 is a very handy tool for monitoring the history of when which applications have failed.

Being a developer, it is to be expected that applications that are "In-Development" will cause problems, which in turn negativly affects the scores of the Windows Reliability Monitor. I utility I'm creating (for personal use) crashes regularly when closed, but also only if it is run from within the RAD Studio 2010 IDE. If I run the compiled EXE from Windows Explorer, then it does not crash, so I suspect that it is some kind of incompatibility between Windows 7 and the Delphi Debugger.

As you can imagine, this scenario is seriously affecting my Reliability Monitor:

So what I'd like to know is whether or not there is a way for me to "exclude" the IGRAB.EXE from being monitored by the Windows Reliability Monitor, so that it can display only those failures that I'm interested in, without my own development projects from screwing up the scores?

I suppose I could attempt to debug what is causing the crash, but so far none of the normal debugging techniques have worked. As I said, the crash only happens if the Delphi IDE was used to launch the program...

A:Reliability Monitor

Sorry Peter, I did search for this yesterday, but was hoping someone else would have some info. I don't think you can exclude certain programs, or even certain categories, sorry. A Guy

I think it may be better to ask this question here.
I recently upgraded the firmware (as reqd) on the Crucial M4 128GB and it went fine. Transferred the OS using Paragon Migrate OS to SSD. It also was straightforward. Except:
My Reliability Monitor doesn't appear to update. I know one of the SSD tweaks is to disable the Reliability Monitor and thought maybe the Paragon software did this. BUT the RacTask appears enabled.
>schtasks.exe /change /enable /tn \microsoft\windows\rac\ractask

So can I ask
1) Those using an SSD is your Reliability Monitor working like it did with your spinner?
2) Those who have used the Paragon product, is your Reliability monitor working as usual?

Since I got my computer I have tried to keep it running as well or better than original, which was something I used the reliability monitor for. That being said, I cannot anymore. Whenever I open it up, I get an Internet Explorer error and below is a screenshot of the error. I also have a similar error with certain help programs. I've googled for months to no avail short of forums that say "Windows Vista seems to be acting up, which means it's acting as it should."

A:Reliability Monitor Issues

Sounds like something or someone may have been over-zealous in an attempt to "clean" parts of the OS, or perhaps the registry.

Try this from an elevated CMD prompt (run as admin):

Regsvr32 vbscript.dll

It'll reregister some of the script handlers that would be used by that Reliability Monitor page. Does it make any difference to the outcome?

There are 4 sections, CPU Disc Netowork and Memory, in my setup, in CPU there is maxium frequency, in Disc there is Highest Active Time and in Memory there is physical memory used. There are blue lines and there are green areas that change frequently. I know how to change the maxium frequency in the CPU column. I don't understand the relationship between the Disc usage in the Kb/s and the highest active time. It doesn't matter much but I am just trying to get effeciency out of my Intel Duo core 2, 3Mb/s, 4 Gb ddr3 1333mhz , vista home premium 64 bit OS. I am runing Raid 1-0, if that helps.

While looking for other issues (now solved) I discovered that the Reliability Monitor graph/chart is empty.

Any suggestions, please?

Hi, and thanks for taking the time to look over my question.

My question is about the Reliability Monitor.

First, I am not showing any entries at all. Not even any blue update notifications, which have been there in the past. Is there any reason these entries are no longer being displayed?

Second, I understand that the Reliability Monitor will assign a stability index number, as an indication of how stable/unstable one's computer is. I have looked through the program, however I am unable to locate that numerical entry. If somebody could point me to where this can be located, that would be very much appreciated.

Reliability Monitor is an advanced tool that measures hardware and software problems and other changes to your computer. It provides a stability index that ranges from 1 (the least stable) to 10 (the most stable). You can use the index to help evaluate the reliability of your computer. Any change you make to your computer or problem that occurs on your computer affects the stability index.

Note: I do have this view set to Weeks, not Days- however there are no entries within the days either.

A:Reliability Monitor Questions

I don't know why you are not showing updates, I am. But I can answer the answer the question about the stability index. It is the vertical numbers on the left hand side. You might want to change the vew by to days rather than weeks and see if that shows more detail.

Hi Forum,
I seem to be experiencing problems with the above graph which often
is slow to advance in it's daily manner.... I like to keep any eye on my performance levels.
I had a problem like this previously and was directed by a member to tackle it through Programme Data and RACAgent adjustments.. the latter under a Command Prompt. This seemed to resolve matters at that time but lately this problem has returned. I did try this remedy again but the graph is "freezing" again after advancing just a day.
It seems the only way I can get a daily report now is approach it through a RACAgent command prompt which is a little troublemsome. Any advice out there ?

An irritating problem occurs with the Graph in above which should, ideally, remain at 10. Mine does for about a week or so. Then suddenly Applications fail everywhere i.e. Internet Explorer, Adobe Reader and a host of others "stop working" The graph sometimes plummets to 6 and crawls at snail's pace back to 7 or 8. I am lucky to reach 9 most times. Is there anything there to worry about ?. Idid Google the matter. Two suggestions were offered ..(1) a complete re-install (rather drastic as I did one a few months ago) or (2) use Firefox browser instead of the troublesome Internet Explorer. Help appreciated. Other than that system is efficient and speedy.

Problem: the Reliability monitor is blank. There once were, but no longer is any graphic on the top screen, or source reports on the bottom (there once were).

Steps Taken so Far:
-I've cleared the RAC published and State data, Reliability history, and problem reports.

-In Services, it shows that "Problem Reports and Solutions..." is started and on automatic.
-In Services, it shows that "Performance Logs and Alerts" is started and on manual.
-The Event Viewer is recording errors and warnings.
-The RAC published and State data files are not being remade (the folders remain empty).
-The Task Scheduler has nothing in the RAC folder.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking that their is a Task that is missing, but how would I fix that?

Hello Forum,

Has anyone noticed a most annoying scenario involving the above. I have recently had a Hard Drive replaced and ,from time to time, I keep an eye on the above monitor.
This commences at 10 on the graph naturally when first installed. A couple of days later their was a slight "blip" in performance dropping this value to maybe 8.64. It then, all things remaining equal, began to climb back, in small increments, towards 10. Weeks later, resting at about 9.84, it starts acting up. In my case, I could not turn off the PC in normal manner (mouse pointer froze) and there had to be a Disruptive Shutdown plummeting the graph to around 8.7. Climbing again then errors galore... "explorer stopped working", next "real player stopped working", Google Earth stopped working". I am now back from nearly 10 a few days ago to around 7.84..maddening PC is working fine and I suppose I am being overfastidious in this matter and I suppose these matters do not amount to much. However, very annoying. Views on the matter appreciated.

A:Performance & Reliability Monitor.

I am not trying to defend the variable readings from the performance, but merely give you my opinion on the subject.
When I check my monitor, I am glad that the readings change, it shows that the montior is sensitive to changes in the performance of the computer.
As you noted small changes are shown in the montior to indicate that during that point and time there is a problem.
The monitor is not suppose to be watched in lieu of enjoying the computer, but as a maintenance tool to help find solutions to problems.
If it were not sensitive to indicate changes in performance, how would you be able to use it as a monitoring tool when needed.
Especially, now, that you know that the fluctuations are not meaningful in real life situations, you could just ignore it. Look at it once a week, to satisfy yourself that the fluctuations are within normal limits. Use it when you continually freeze or have some other problem that you want to correct.

Today I was playing music on my computer and while I was out of the room it crashed. When I came back after the music stopped it was already at the BIOS screen so I did not have a chance to see if there was a blue screen or error message. When I looked in the event log there were no events logged for the time of the crash. This is the second time the computer has crashed in the past few days, and I thought that it was random since the last crash gave me a blue screen referencing the audio driver after I plugged in a USB headset while resuming from sleep. However, now it seems that this may be a recurring problem. I reinstalled Windows 7 64-bit several months ago after having many blue screens and I hope that the same thing isn't happening again.

Hello, can you help please, my reliability monitor is not working, it runs as per the schedule but does not produce any data, my problems started recently following a small corruption with the library docs, this corruption caused the R/monitor to run continuously, I rectified this error with a library scan, all is good there, I then ran the reliability reset batch file which reset the monitor back to zero. However when the monitor runs it does not produce the required files that live in the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\RAC folder under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\RAC\PublishedData and C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\RAC\StateData, these 2 folders are empty. I saved the original files however if I return the files to the 2 folders the reliability monitor does not access them. I have attached 2 x prints one of my RAC registry and RAC WMI.
I have also attached prints of my Task Scheduler Conditions, Settings and Triggers. I have searched high and low for a solution to fix this issue, I do not want to run a Windows refresh as I have numerous installed programs that I would have to reinstall. Hope you can help, please let me know if you require any further info, Many Thanks
Note: Do you think an update to 8.1 may fix this issue. We are due for release in Australia on the 17th Oct.

Recently, I formatted my HD and made a clean install of Vista Home Premium x64 w/ SP1 slipstreamed into the DVD I made. The install went very smoothly and I had all of the updates installed. Everything is working without problems, yet I noticed something weird in the reliability monitor that I've never seen anywhere before. There appeared to be a long (or infinite) string of unknown characters (when they show up as simply boxes) at the end of some text in the monitor. I posted a screenshot so you can see what I'm talking about since it's hard to explain in text.

Have any of you seen this? And do any of you know how to fix this? The program still functions fine and I haven't experienced any problems anywhere. This only occurs within the reliability monitor tab where your reliability graph appears, everything else in the monitor works and looks fine. It's just bothersome to have all of those extra characters at the end there.

Thanks for any help.

A:Reliability Monitor - Unknown Characters

Hello Spd2Last,

This is strange. I have not seen this before. Have you tried restarting the computer to see if it was just some weird quark?

You might also run a sfc /scannow command to see if it can find and fix any bad system files that be the cause. It probably would not hurt to run a very thorough antivirus and anti-spyware/malware scan to help be safe incase it is some form of malware.

Hope this helps,

Hi there!

I'm having a small but annoying problem with Vista (business)'s reliability monitor. Every day since one day in August last year it relists about 50 programs as having an "application configuration change", often with several duplicates (there's always the same number of duplicates for all of the programs).

It doesn't seem to be related to any other crashes or installs listed there, and some of the programs it lists, I haven't used for months.

I've tried moving the files out of C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\RAC\... where the reliability logs are kept, and that clears all the previous entries, but each day it still adds the 50 application changes.

I've scanned several times for viruses and spyware with a few different scanners, but have never found anything. I'm a bit stumped as to how to fix it, and if it could be caused by a larger problem I haven't noticed yet or something.

Well if anyone has any suggestions, it'd be much appreciated! If any other system info would help, just ask.

While the reliability monitor and event viewer can be useful troubleshooting tools, I have trouble what can safely be ignored. For example, I did a clean install of Windows 8.1, using local signin and did not setup OneDrive. Daily, there is a Critical Event complaining that OneDrive stopped working. (It might be more critical if it DID work! ) So, is this 'critical' for system stability or 'critical' for MS strategy?

I'd say for later one. I don't know why they are pushing One Drive like they are so eager to spend money on online storage. One Drive is useful if you have multiple connected devices but on a single computer, to be used as backup, internet would have to be very fast and even with a Gigabit connection not very practical for large amount of data.

I need some help.

Due to some personal carelessness, I damaged my C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\RAC folder. It was necessary for me to recreate the PublishedData and StateData directories.

Unfortunately, after that, Reliability Monitor would not show data. I tracked the problem down to a permission problem with the newly created folders. RAC Task runs as LOCAL SERVICE. Adding permissions (OI)(CI) F for LOCAL SERVICE to the RAC folder allows the RAC Task to populate its files to the directories. Before, it was running without writing data.

Then, to make the graph work, I'm currently having to set (OI)(CI) F for BUILTIN/Users, or the Reliability Monitor reporting does not work properly, even in an Administrator account (and BUILTIN/Administrators had full access inherited the whole time). The graph appears, but it is empty. The only way I've been able to get the graph to populate is by giving BUILTIN/Users full access.

My question is, can someone whose install of Windows 7 x64 isn't hosed please tell me what the permissions are supposed to be on the RAC folder, and its subfolders and objects? I'd like to set it back to the way it was installed, but I don't have access to a proper install of Windows 7.

For now, the jury rigged folder permissions are doing the trick, but I'd like to get it back to a clean state.

Here are the permissions I currently have on my RAC folder:

I know this has been discussed at length before, but I have tried everything I have read here and elsewhere and I still can't get the graph to show anything. The RAC task runs successfully and there are files in the PublishedData and StateDate folders which have the current date and are rather small compared to the same files on another computer I use where it works.

I have noticed that the graph has the message you get when you reset the monitor every other day so it would seem that it is resetting itself and perhaps that is why it doesn't show anything.

I have reset all file and folder permissions to default. Still nothing. I have compared my settings to a computer where it works and they seem the same.

I even decided to bite the bullet and do a repair install, but I get the cannot upgrade Windows 7 Pro to Windows 7 Pro error. And, yes I've tried running the setup.exe in Vistal mode, but still get the error.

I was wondering if anyone might have some updated information that I have yet to find. As I've said, I've done everything listed in this forum such as run sfc /scannow and I ran the batch file posted to reset it. I've deleted the files from the PublishedData and StateData folders.

I've considered trying a system restore, but I don't really know when it stopped working so don't know how far back I'd have to go.

If nothing else, does anyone know how I can get the repair install to work?

Thanks in advance should someone have an answer.

I have been having trouble with the broadband signal in my house. The router is at the front of the house in the master socket but I struggle to get a signal at the back of the house. I don't want to move the router as it is plugged in to the master socket and there is a huge difference in speed if I move it to the back.

Please can anyone tell me if there is some software which will log the reliability of my broadband showing when the connection drops and/or maybe keep a log of the speed? I have Googled but can only find software which monitors usage which I'm not bothered about as am on unlimited.

Windows 7 Reliability Monitor Graph problem.
I have 2 computers, both exactly the same hardware, running Windows 7 Home premium installed at the same time on both computers. (January 2010)
The reliability monitor graph in one computer works as it should showing the details and reliability index. In the other computer the graph does not work at all, it never shows anything.

Whenever I start or reboot that computer, it shows the message that the reliability monitor will take several hours to calculate the index and be updated for this first install of windows seven.

The reliability monitor window shows the problem reports as it should.
The RAC files in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\RAC are being updated by the scheduled RACTask hourly.

I have checked the RACTask in the scheduler, deleted it and reinstalled it, and it's history in Task Scheduler says its working correctly.

The Vista fix (found with Google searches) doesn't work. Does anyone have a Windows 7 answer/fix?

I have run SFC.exe scan now, it didn't fix the problem...

Hey Guys,

The Vista Reliability monitor is pretty cool, except, application failures frequently and easily bring down the stability index of the system.

Personally, I do not like that. One cannot judge the stability of a system purely on the stability of just one application on the system. For me, that application is Team Fortress 2. Every time I'm done playing it, it crashes on exit. This usually happens frequently with most Source engine games.

Unfortunately, b/c of TF2 crashing on exit, my stability index is 2.95! My system is not at all unstable!

Is there an easy way to modify the report so that it excludes application failures from the report? I have done a lot of searching on the internet, and I cannot find anything about it.

I have a desktop PC and Laptop both running Windows 8. The desktop PC has never presented an issue. Reliability Monitor on my laptop, however, always displays a date that is several weeks behind the true date. Today, it displays July 7th. The clock and date are correct on the laptop. Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon? Is there a fix?

I recently had a BSOD, but it does not appear in my Reliability Monitor OR in my Minidump files. It was within that last couple of days.

Where can I find out more about this BSOD? Do all BSOD encounters log information someplace, or are some crashes too intense to even log crash reports?

I have attached my SF Diagnostic Tool results, but I'm really not sure what good it will do because it is not showing the crash I am talking about. The crash I experienced was within the last few days (although I have regular BSOD experiences that I'm trying to resolve as it is).

Hi yefo

Could you be more specific... on which date you had a bsod... for some strange reason .... the last BSOD happened today

Log Name: Application

Attached files:

And the minidump is dated 070712-12838-01.dmp..... and it looks like a process called TESV.exe that caused the crash .... and i think its got to do with Skyrim software.. try updating it ....

This is just one of the latest.... there are others as well... but you need to be specific to which date your are looking for as the date mentioned on the name of the dmp file is different from the day it had BSOD.....

I have upgraded to Windows 10 first my laptop and, more recently, my desktop. I use Reliability Monitor daily. Three days into Windows 10, Reliability Monitor on my desktop reported an application failure yesterday: "Cortana - stopped working". There are two further such reports today within a minute of one another. My laptop has not reported this event so far. Everything in Windows+S>Settings is set to off on both machines - I do not want Cortana. Settings>Privacy is set to much the same on both machines, except in Speech, inking and typing. I see that my desktop is set to "Get to know me" and my laptop is set to "Stop getting to know me". I wonder if any other users have advice to overcome my issue in this minefield of settings that Windows 10 offers.

Does the Windows problem reports center ever find a solution to anything , i can't recall a single instance of this thing actually coming up with a solution to anything.

What good is it?

Thanks folks

A:Reliability monitor / No new solutions found , what a joke.

Usually no,
It states the actual .exe that crashed which is usually on the original crash popup message too :/

Usually clean boot will deal with third party crap and if it doesn't usually it's a rogue security suite causing the crashes,
Which that can be looked at closer by using safe mode with networking that kills all third party crap,
But yes it's a process of elimination to the direct cause

Im having a really tough to TS problem with the reliability monitor. For the last week, it no longer displays any data and the graph dosent render.

It just display as blank with no data. Some things to note...

1. The RAC published and State data are being updated and published each day as they shouold. So the data does exist.
2. I have tried the "Resetting RAC" methods that worked for Vista. But the fix dosent work for W7.
3. I cant think of anything that may have changed. I havent deleted any folders or log files.
4. I've used Process Monitor to trace the events when the reliability monitor executes and everything looks fine.
5. There are no errors or warnings in the event viewer.
6. I havent installed any Windows Updates.

So Im hoping that someone can think of something I am missing here. Oddly it used to work for some time and i ran it each day. Then all of a sudden one day it just stopped.

Could this be a permission issue possibly? I do recall changing permissions for C:\Users\Me\AppData. Are there any folders or logs within that path that might affect RAC? Are there any services that are required for RAC to collect and render data?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

A:Reliability Monitor Wont Display Graph

You're not a "registry cleaner" (ab)user, are you?

Does the same symptom occur in safe mode?

Is the wmimgmt service running? Stoppable? Restartable?

As a wild stab in the dark, one of the standard causes is the loss of COM registrations from components used in rendering that info. If you haven't already tried all that, do a web search on regsvr32 and "reliability monitor" for a list of DLLs worth re-registering.

My brother was having with his reliability monitor that stopped working 10/28/08. His os is Vista 64 Ultimate. Here is what worked to get his reliability monitor working again:

Go to control panel, click classic view, click administrative tools, then click event viewer. In the first column expand "Windows Logs" and click "System". In the 3rd column under "Actions", click "Clear Log", then "Clear and Save".

The center column had a "data is invalid (13)" error when he accessed the event viewer. After reading some posts, along with some trial and error, we finally got the above solution to solve his problem.

He noticed in a few minutes that it updated to 11/08. Then a little while later it was showing history to 12/08. By the next morning, his reliability monitor was updated to the current date of 03/14/09. All his previous data was saved and he has a fully functioning reliability monitor. I am happy to report that mine has been working fine for over a year. I just wanted to share the solution.

I hope this helps someone in the same situation...

Another weird thing I came across in the Release Preview (which I know is not a final product, but it is a strange issue).

If I open up Action Center, expand Maintenance and click on "View reliability history" the Reliability Monitor never loads, it's just stuck at the "Generating report" message and never actually shows the report. If I forcefully click on "Reliability Monitor" in the address bar, it shows up but has no entries whatsoever. And my current install of the Release Preview is already a few days old. I immediately noticed that the initial report (where it lists all the initial drivers and updates etc.) takes longer to actually show me anything "just" after installing the OS (in 7, it takes about a day, but in 8 it can take up to two).

+++ During the time I took to wrote this post, the Reliability Monitor loaded with no entries... Extremely weird seeing as how I never experienced this in 7.

While cleaning up logs, I found this in Event Viewer:Application and Services Logs:Microsoft:Windows:Reliability-Analysis Engine:Operational events:

Since the exact score is shown, can a task or gadget be created with this daily log to show the line graph with these numbers?

A:Secret to finding exact score in reliability monitor

In Vista, the monitor would not only show a line graph, but the exact current number. In W7, it shows the line graph and we have to infer what number it is from looking at its location. By going to the operational log, I noticed that the exact scores were given in it, and used by the monitor to show the line graph. Microsoft should have been able to continue adding the current overall score next to it like they did in Vista, but they chose to exclude it in W7. Besides creating a shortcut, is there any way to have an app that pulls from this log and shows you the number and the graph, or, shows just the number?

I am having an annoying intermittant problem with Reliability Monitor on my system (Windows 7 64-bit, Dell XPS 8700 with Intel i7 running McAfee Antivirus Plus). I have searched various forums and can find no reports of a similar problem...

Occasionally, and at random, my Reliability Monitor graph display will not show the expected information. If I open Action Center > Maintenance > View reliability history, I usually see the normal data table:

After about every 4th or 5th system startup (or restart), when I attempt to open the Reliability Monitor it will open to an incomplete display, with the message "Reliability Monitor is generating the report. Please wait.":

Note that this is NOT the "blank" display that seems to be commonly seen, where the Reliability Monitor needs to be reset. My reliability Monitor is actually working correctly. There is just a glitch or hang in populating the graphic display. The RAC task is completing as expected, and, when working, the reliability data is always up to date.

And also note, the data IS actually "present" in the table, it just isn't visible. If I click in the table in the position where a day's data SHOULD be, the details will be displayed below the graph normally:

If I reboot the system (either a shutdown > startup or a restart) MOST of the time the Monitor will display normally. The problem just seems to occur randomly.

If I end and restart the explorer.exe process without reboo... Read more

Mine's been out for a couple of years also and I gave up trying to fix it, but since I've seen your thread and found this one: Reliability Monitor Post #23 I've decided to try and see if I can get the graph working again. I can view all the problem reports just don't have the graph.

I did use Brink's Reliability Monitor - Reset tutorial and everything worked except the graph, Wa WA's post #23 has a few more items to try and I'm willing to try them.

I haven't tried step #3 yet, and I don't think I'd delete the files in the PublishedData, StateData folders, in step #3 just rename them to PublishedData.old and StateData.old, windows should create new ones but if I saw any balking from windows like I can't or shouldn't do it that way I'd leave the .old originals and create new/empty PublishedData and StateData folders.

I jumped over step 4 to try step 5 next, the security settings, now its a matter of time to see if the graph starts running again, but maybe I'll need step 4 if 5 doesn't pan out. Might take a while, the last report was dated back in March, but I believe it should still show that blue squiggly line.

My master boot record was no longer viable so I had to, of necessity, use a system image to restore everything (Windows 10 Pro now at 10586.494) two weeks ago. Since then, the Reliability Monitor has behaved strangely, either showing the blue graph line taking dips and upsweeps, but with no event information, or just a horizontal blue graph line at the '10' level. I cannot find the task, racagent, in Task Scheduler under RAC. I ran sfc /scannow and the DISM command to 'restore health', but both actions found no problems. I tried resetting the Reliability Monitor per other suggestions in this forum -- that just pegged the blue graph line at '10'. I can view two problem reports by clicking on 'View all problem reports' at the bottom, but no Windows Update or program update events show anywhere. Any help in solving this would be much appreciated!

perfmon.exe /rel runs reliability monitor

perfmon.exe /report runs System Health Report

permon.exe /sys runs a standalone Performance Monitor

After entering Reliability Monitor you will see down the bottom View problem Reports and I would love to have a shortcut just to see problem reports not action center only problem reports
Anything which has its own window must have a command to run it.Can anyone tell me the command launch problem reports not action center
thank you

A:Reliability Monitor and System Health ReportHi the following shortcuts

So do you want a shortcut for each command or one to run all of them? Should be an easy batch file...

You can run all three from one batch file...

Open notepad...

Type the following:

perfmon.exe /rel
perfmon.exe /report

Now save it as "whatever.bat" to your desktop... I called mine perfmon.bat.

For whatever reason, if I put the perfmon.exe line last it would only run the first 2...???

I didnt like the first file because the command prompt window remained open after executing the batch file.. so change it to this:

START perfmon.exe
START perfmon.exe /rel
START perfmon.exe /report

PS... create the first one... run it and then right click the batch file and edit it, then run again... the second one is cooler!

Windows crashes randomly at any time. I've upgraded Realtek audio driver as suggested in other threads, still it crashes any time, some times just after boot. I've also changed my power settings to 'high performance', so 'sleeping' shouldn't be a problem either.

Error message: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Though I've changed my settings to generate minidump file, I don't see any in %SystemRoot% folder. So I'm posting my event details.

My windows explorer crashes and restarts every time I perform some action (e.g., opening a file, moving a file, saving a file). I get the standard "windows explorer encountered a problem and needs to shut down; sorry for the inconvenience" message. In addition, trying to attach a file (mostly word documents) crashes the web browser - IE and firefox simply close, chrome gives an error message "plug-in crash - shockwave flash" and becomes unresponsive.

I very much appreciate your help.

In windows XP home edition, how would I print out the event monitor logs that happended on a certain day. Would it show when someone accessed the system via USB connection, i.e. plugged in an MP3 player. And would it show exactly when a program file was accessed or automatically opened, i.e. Windows Media Player.

Thank you

Hmmm, I know how you print the Event Viewer logs from the events in the log, but tracking a specific event? From playing with my XP machine I do not think that shows in the Event Logs. I just opened WMP and it created no new events in the Event Viewer.

There might be a way to access the Windows Media Player, recent playlist.

Is it possible to use Server 2008 R2, a Windows 7 workstation, or some software to collect the events logged in the Action Center on our Windows 7 clients? Also, is it possible to collect the events logged in the Reliability Monitor (View reliability history) from our Windows 7 clients.

I am interested in aggregating this information in a central location i.e. on a server/workstation, which our administrators have access to. Is this possible when using System Center Configuration Manager? A smaller scale solution would be preferred as we only have around 120 clients.

Any help would be much appreciated.

This is Agentless Error Monitoring (AEM) with SCOM, or Desktop Error Monitoring (DEM) with the MDOP package. I believe DEM is end of life, though, so AEM is probably the best way to go.

Hi there,

I have recently been having multiple problems with my computer. According to the ?reliability monitor? (screenshots attached), I have had multiple blue screens and ?Unexpected Windows shutdowns?. However, unless I keep missing the blue screens, I have not seen any of them. I find this very strange as I am sure that I would have noticed if my computer had blue screened! Also, while looking through the reliability monitor, I can see that every couple of days I am having ?Hardware Errors?. Again, I have not witnessed any errors or unusual things happening to my computer. Another issue is that multiple programs and apps ?stop working? every day, these errors I do witness.

Do you think that these issues are related or caused by hardware? So far I have updated all drivers and tested the ram with memtest86+ (and got 8 passes). I have attached the BSOD log files and screenshots of reliability monitor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I am running Windows 7 Home Premium, and on a daily basis the computer loses signal to the monitor . The event view is Kernal Power Event 41 Critical Crash.
The signal loss happened once a few years ago where I removed the video card and it worked again up until the last few months it has been getting progressively worse, so I got sick of removing the card, so I now find if I shut down the power, it comes good after a while.

A:Windows 7 Kernal Power Event 41 Critical Crashes daily

So, let's have a look at this report:

Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).
FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:

Hey guys, I'm going on my 10th hour of trouble shooting here.

Started my PC this morning, went and opened Steam, then windows explorer crashed without a message (Task bar disappeared) and locked up my whole PC for about 5 seconds before the BSOD. Rebooted to install "WhoCrashed" to read the minidump. During this process, I went through about 6 other crashes of the same nature. It doesn't seem to be dependent on load, however, because it'll happen just sitting idle on the desktop too.

On the most recent crash, I noticed that around the same time explorer crashed, my Razer keyboard and mouse both died out, leaving me no control.

I just got a new graphics card (NVIDEA Geforce GTX 960 4GB) 2 weeks ago and it was all fine up until now, so I'm not sure if it's related. We put in a Coolermaster CPU cooler at the same time, new thermal paste, etc. and all temperatures are normal (about 90 degrees F, same as always). None of my temps are off from what they've been for the last 2 years, and I don't think I've ever had a BSOD on this custom PC.

Updated NVIDEA drivers from safe mode, started looking into Motherboard updates, but not applying any because I can't even tell what I have already. Everything is fine and dandy in safe mode.

So, please, for the love of all things holy, someone help me out here... I'm good with PC's but I'm at my witt's end here. Attached you should find the proper log and an image from Speccy. Had to take it with my phone beca... Read more

This happened recently after my sister downloaded something from the internet, and when I opened the folder to transfer it to her flash drive, a notification popped up telling me that, "Windows Explorer has crashed," and then it restarts (not the computer, just explorer. It sort of "refreshes" the desktop), then loads, and then crashes again.

I can still use my laptop normally from adjacent accounts, and when I tried deleting the file (the source of all of this, I'm assuming) it says that I need the permission of my main account, even though this account that I am currently using is also and administrator.

Can someone give me a little help? If there is none to be found I can use this side account for a while until something can be done, but it is incredibly inconvenient.

I am using Windows 7 currently.

drives. We see this issue over the VPN which would indicate this issue is somewhat related to network latency and Windows Explorer trying to enumerate and display all pertinent info such as free/used disk space.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hey guys, thanks for viewing my post... This has been going on for about 2 weeks now and I can't figure out the cause...

Every time I open "My Computer" or anything with windows explorer, everything is fine for a few seconds... then starts to slow... then explorer completely locks up and crashes without an error message... screen shows only the wallpaper for a few minutes... then explorer starts back up, icons come back, etc and all is normal again.

This only seems to happen when utilizing Windows Explorer. I've tried to change the settings on the automatic thumbnail view thinking THAT was the problem, but it always crashes before I can go in there. (Plus I haven't changed settings in that area any time recently, and I do a lot of graphics so a thumbnail preview is a must)

I assume this is just a dumb XP problem, but searching for it with terms like "windows explorer crashes" etc comes up with only Internet Explorer results... I have 1.5g of ram and a decent processor in my HP Pavilion a535w... and only since a few weeks ago have I had any problems like this. NEED HELP!

Also, ever since about a month after getting a new graphics card... sometimes it takes 1-5 tries to get my computer to boot if just recently shut off or restarted. The computer appears to come on, but it doesn't make any loading clicks, and the monitor won't turn on.

I don't think they're related, but both are equally annoying.

Here is my HJT log bel... Read more

this is my godmother's system so for the most part i've had to peice together the exact issues but from what she's told me internet explorer and windows explorer crashes constantly while she is online gaming (e.g. and i have noticed on a previous visit that her homepage was indeed changed without her doing so.... now she has said that is has happened before... another thing is that the pc is running slow over all but imo i don't really see it.... i have so far run the online scans as well as her av that runs daily (avast)... also she has run spyware doctor and ccleaner as well as reg mechanic.... now the only firewall she had which is listed in one of these logs, was the windows firewall, i installed comodo personal firewall right after the scans were done.... she has a habit of running 2 av's at one time (which was the case up til today) and i have put a stop to this however i'm sure there's bits and peices left on her system from norton, avg and trend micro pc cillin..... if you have any advice where to look to get these fully off that would be greatly appreciated but not the main concern right now....

i have gone online and gotten instructions on how to remove some of the tracking cookies that panda pointed out... those would be Zedo, Mediaplex, Casalemedia and Fastclick... but i have not done anything to remove them yet, i thought i'd talk to you guys first....

any and all help is greatly appreciated and thank you in advance...

I have been troubleshooting explorer.exe crashes for the last few weeks.  I have read many of the other threads on explorer.exe crashes and tried most of the different troubleshooting steps, with no success.  So hoping someone here might be able
to assist.  Running Win 7 Pro SP1 x64.  Windows Explorer crashes regularly, usually as a result of double-clicking My Computer or other Folder shortcuts located on my desktop.  I can report the following:

-When reviewing the crash reports in AppCrashView or via Action Center, I see that Fault Module Name is StackHash_xxxx (where xxxx is a417, fa09, d638, 3d5b, 7f3f, c1c9, e2b0)
-Tested RAM modules using MemTest86 - PASS.
-Ran virus and malware scans - CLEAN.
-Ran SFC - NO integrity violations.
-Ran chkdsk /f - NO problems
-When booting in Safe Mode, the problem does NOT occur.
-When doing a Clean boot (with only MS services loaded) or a Diagnostic startup, the problem still occurs.
-Ran ShellExView and disabled all non-MS extensions, problem still occurs.
-Turned off Thumbnails, problem still occurs.
-Installed HotFixes KB2494427 & KB2638018, problem still occurs.
-Running Webroot AV.  Uninstalled and problem still occurs.
-System Restore is not an option as the restore points don't go back far enough.
-Enabled CrashDumps for explorer.exe and ran dumpchk on them, but don't know how to read them.

Crash Report summary and dump files are posted here.  Hopefully one of y... Read more

Hi all,

I really hope someone can help me out here, as this is my work box, and it will take me about a week to get everything re-installed and configured if I have to format :-(

The problem is that if I try to open windows explorer or internet explorer, they immediately crash. I suspect that this is due to spyware / virus.

I have since upgraded from service pack 2 - 3 and run scans with McAfee, Avast and SpyHunter3. Can't find anything ...
All open / save dialog boxes work fine though ... which is luckily the only way i can work now ... through firefox

A:Windows Explorer Crashes And Microsoft Explorer Slowdown

Hi Eric and welcome to the forum. You have some junk that needs to go, and I need to run a good scanner. Since you are having trouble downloading, I will use HJT first, then you should be able to download and run the scan. Follow these directions in the posted order.1) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe View the links then I suggest you use Add Remove program to uninstall this junk. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\palstart.exe <<< this program is nasty, see this: If you see anything about in in Add Remove programs, uninstall it also.3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = - Default URLSearchHook is missing(items with (no file) are not working right if at all. If you are sure they are safe, and you use them, install them again after we are done)O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Toolbar Helper - {02478D3... Read more

So whenever I click File Explorer on the taskbar or in the start menu, Windows Explorer crashes and I need to go into task manager and restart it. But if I click a folder on my desktop it doesn't crash?

I started up my computer and Windows explorer randomly froze up and hung.
I didnt do anything to provoke it. I just sat here waiting for my computer to boot up.
Then when I thought it was finished I opened firefox.
Then Windows explorer just freezes completely. I tried doing windows key + r. It opened the run window but it froze. Then I tried moving my mouse on the right to open up the charm bar, ( I think it's called that) to hit settings and then restart. When I clicked settings the whole bar just closed out and would close out every time.
I right clicked on the task bar to try and open task manager. When I clicked on task manager it wouldn't ever open.
So I couldn't even shut down properly. I just pushed the power button. Then I turned it on again and the same exact thing happened.
So I shut it off again.
Then I turned it back on and went to msconfig before it froze up and I set it to boot into safe mode.
Then I got into safe mode and ran a malware bytes scan and an avast scan. Nothing came up on either so I just went back to normal boot. The problem stopped now but I want to know what caused that whole thing to happen because it hasn't happened to me before.
So I want to look at event viewer to see if that'll explain it.
Where would I find that at in event viewer?

A:Where can I find Windows explorer in event viewer?

Go to Control Panel , open Administrative Tools . The Event viewer is the 5th option in the list .
Hope this helps .
note the Control Panel can be accessed from the All apps list on the start screen or the Desktop toolbar
note 2 the problem should show in Windows Logs under System or Application

Hi all,
I posted another topic after I was infected with malware in:
I appear to have removed all malware from the machine but continue to experience problems. Included below is an error from Windows event viewer, a log file from Minitoolkit and a brief description of my symptoms. Please take a look and thanks in advance for your time and any assistance you can provide. Thanks!
1. Computer will freeze within less than 5 minutes of startup, all programs/explorers/browsers are non responsive
2. Intel CPU Usage monitor pegs Core1 over to 100% and stays stuck there for the period of the "Freeze"
3. Computer sometimes breaks out of this after several minutes and returns to normal operations, only to freeze again in another 5-15 minutes
Steps Taken:
1. Comprehensive malware scanning & virus removal procedure (see link to other topic above)
2. Updated Video drivers, chipset drivers, etc. to most recent stable versions
3. Ran Windows updates and installed all priority updates
4. Ran Windows Memory Diagnostic (good)
5. Modified windows virtual memory cache size from (~alot) to 2048mb
