Q: BSOD - SF Diagnostic Tool Info is attached.

My Toshiba C660D has been suffering from BSOD. So I re-installed the OS, but after a week or so it is doing it again. It was slow booting/closing and then the Black Screen. I have installed a different HDD and the OS again and it is currently working, but I had another BSOD earlier today and it is slow to reboot. I have also changed the memory. Can anyone please help?

Many thanks in advance.

I've been getting random BSOD. It doesn't seem to be connected to any one program or situation but usually happens when i'm playing games. I built this computer myself:
Asus Sabertooth Z77 MB
Intel i5 3.4Gh
NVidea GTX 560 GPU
8 Gb Ram

I have attached my zip folder for the SF Diagnostic Tool as instructed by a couple other threads on this site.

I don't know if it's related to the BSOD but i also just recently have had games randomly crash on me as well. Starcraft II, League of Legends, Dead Space 1 and 2.
This has all just started happening in the last week. I have had no such problems before then.

I'm sorry if i'm leaving out an important piece of information. Please tell me what you need from my end, and thank you very much for helping me out.

A:Random BSOD, SF Diagnostic tool zip file attached.

Welcome aboard, brook4.

Your crash dumps indicate memory corruption mainly, with mostly a bugcheck 1A.

Bugcheck 1A may occur for a corrupted device driver, too. So, before blaming the RAMs, we want to make it sure that it is not any driver that is causing the crashes. In such a situation, it is better to enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.

Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

Let us know the results, with the subsequent crash dumps, if any.

Depending on this, we will decide our next step.

Hi, first thanks for helping. BSOD happened when I tried to load FIFA14, it has never happened before... And my computer restarted and when every time I try to open FIFA it would go back to the desktop when it starts loading. (I'm not good at computer... but when I check the files of FIFA14, there is one called FIFAcrashdump-..., tell me if you need it, I hope this could help you a little, thanks again)

A:BSOD playing FIFA14, attached with info from SF diagnostic tools

So this is a MacBook Pro.

A game like FIFA14 is not for Intel HD Graphics 4000. It requires more graphics resource to play the game successfully.

Hello! Thanks for reading through my post

So over the last 6 weeks, I have been getting the blue screen a several minutes after start-up. Last week it happened a couple of days in a row. I had a tech come and to my surprise he just ran a virus scan and disabled some start-up items. Next day I had blue screen again and then finally got blue screen with a sharp noise and immediate shut down.

Not knowing what to do....I did the following:

Bought a second HD and installed it. Cloned C Drive.
Was going to do a fresh install but of course had no disks. Got ISO file from Microsoft and burned to disk.
When I rebooted with disk it said there was something wrong with startup and asked if I wanted to recover windows? Anyways, I said yes.

Now when I reboot, I get a Boot Menu each time. Choice between Windows 7 or Windows 7 Home Premium (recovered) - which only works with the installation CD. So far the Windows 7 is working. I am not sure what I did though or why I am getting Boot Menu each time?

My next question is, I have not had the blue screen for two days, but how do I know if I have resolved the problem? What do I need to do next?

Because I didn't know what to do, I did all the things I know how to do hoping one of them was the right thing. Here is a list of what I did:

Updated and ran all anti-virus tools: AVG free, Spybot, Malaware Bytes
Updated drivers from Manufacturer's website
Checked BIOS, there is one update but it's to do with CPU so I just left it as is

This usually doesn't happen if I try to sleep within a few minutes of starting up my computer, but trying it after prolonged use, the monitors turn off right away but I'm hearing the fans whirring for about five minutes before the computer just quits and turns off rather than going to sleep.

My configuration is as follows:
i7 3770K
MSI Z77-G43
16GB Patriot Viper 1600 ram
Samsung 840 Pro SSD

My SF diagnostic zipfile is attached with further details about the crash. Any advice would be appreciated.

Haven't actaully seen this computer BSOD for me, but the customer has told me has done so. I have checked the event viewer and seen logs of the computer has unexpectedly shutdown. No information there to say why. I ran a Surface scan on the Hard Drive to check for bad sectors, none was found. HD Sentinel says HD is 100% healthly. I also ran HotCPU benchmark software to put the computer under heavy load to see what fails. No errors found. So I've come here. I've attached a SF Diagnostic Scan log.

AVG is contributing to your BSOD's. Please remove it for testing purpose. Use Microsoft Security Essentials.

Recommended from a strict BSOD perspective, compatibility & stability compared to other security software:

Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

Malwarebytes - Free

Good and Free system security combination.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable!:-

I right click to run as admin it launches correctly but when I hit Grab All it bombs telling me it cannot find the path \\desktop. It does this both on the computer I am having the BSOD on and my normal workstation.

Any advice?

Search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. Zip them and upload those.

Also upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.

The SF Diagnostic Tool couldn?t create the file I guess that you announced would end up at my desktop as expected. The file that you suggest me to compress and deliver as an attachment either were invisible or failed to be created by the SF Diagnostic Tool. If you have any comments of how or why it won?t end up as expected I would be glad to hear suggestions and ideas of how I can fix this as well.

I don?t know if it was a good alternative but I decided to pick up the separate files during the process of the SF Diagnostic Tool one by one and then compress and send them to you in a zip-file. I hope this will work as well and gives a hint of what it is that causes my BSOD.

(I have noticed that BSOD in 90% of the time occurs when I start a render process with Lightwave 3D 9.6 and that it most of the time happens after 20-25 frames. The other times BSOD appears hasn?t got any special connection to any software process that I am aware of.)

Regards, Jack

Hello again,

HP Pavillion ZD 8129ea is my other laptop. The ZD 7k/8k series were just a another faulty design HP disaster. These laptops overheat very easily due to design flaws, and my own laptop only manages to work with an Akasa (rather huge) 25 CM fan attached below it working at max rpm.

If I remove the Cooling Board and/or stop the fan, I get a f****fest of BSOD's (blue variety), general protection faults, and black screens fiilled with pages of incomprehensible characters such as:

jsdsflfd*&$&*^)&$JKKLJFLKJHFJ*($(* %$P*)$*)OUKJNFJ:*)*$)$*P*$)*$*$FJJFJFJFJFJF*)$)$&*$&*$$&)FLJKF_())(%_(&%%)%()%)(%{(&_+%+U VIFIJ{"IPKJJ{KF"{"JPKFJ"K{PFJKL

In addition, characters displayed in DOS (such as the text in the Windows-has-failed-loading-do-you-want-to-start-in-safe-mode screen) also appear garbled.

Yet another testimony to Hewlett Packard's epic success in designing laptops. This particular laptop, a high end model, had initially cost me over $2k.

(It follows that I never bought another HP product following this epic fail)

By contrast, my Pentium 4 Toshiba laptop from 2003 still works, and my P20 Toshiba laptop only failed after, um, 7 years of hard daily usage.

Attached please find the diagnostics generated from the BSOD_XP_v1.3_jcgriff2_PROD.exe.

I am running XP SP 3 on the HP laptop as well.

Thanks in advance for your help, guys.

I have bought a new PC for my wife without OS. It is an Acer N2120G supplied only with FreeDOS on the HD. I have installed Win 7 Pro via a USB flash drive, using the Windows DVD/USB tool from the install DVD without any great difficulty.
Everything works but once she started using it she got crashes about once a day. I tried it myself and get the same problem. At present there isn't anything elaborate installed. Mainly it will be used for browsing and emails and a few of the built in card games. Having installed Win 7 Pro sp1 32bit, I wiped the FreeDOS partition so that is now unallocated empty space.

She had to stop using it so I could check it all. I got advice from the Win 7 Forum Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool stops at 88% complete so I started with simple checks like PW and SFC and they looked fine. I went back to the AMD website and their auto detect told me that I had all the up to date drivers.
Just to be safe, I updated all the drivers from the AMD automatic system. I was especially cautious about the graphics card as I know that can be very sensitive! But the crashes still occurred - maybe after 6 hours - maybe after 6 minutes

I set the PC to run the Memory Diagnostic from Administrative Tools. Just the standard shutdown and run option. it froze at 88% complete. After some hours I gave up and after a reboot, tried again - same freeze but at 21%. Then I tried the memtest86 having downloaded it for recording to a CD. I can't take it anymore! I've been dealing with this problem for a year or two now.. Basically had this problem since I had this PC and I should of returned it when I first got it but as I need my PC for school and work I really had no option to go without a PC. Anyway my PC crashes several times a day and its very frustrating. It seems to crash from a lot of things but nothing that really does it specifically every time. I play League of Legends and when you are using its desktop UI it will crash during champion select scree but while running the game it RARELY crashes. It's odd. I go to get  a drink and my pc is idling, and I come back to a BSOD. I let something DL over night and it crashes. I play games on full settings and it works fine for hours on end. I browse on chrome and scroll around for a little and it crashes. I haven't kept track of all the error codes but I see a lot of "A clock time Interrupt was not recieved', also "irql_not_less_or_equal" and some others that I get randomly.
See attached info.

Hi, I built my own PC but unfortunately I'm experiencing BSOD's on an almost daily basis.

Please note, I had not used this PC for over 15 months due to moving abroad. I have since moved back and I now remember the problems I was having. That is why there is a 15 month gap in dump files / crashes.

I have attached the dmp log using BlueScreenView program.

The BSOD's appear to be random and different each time. There is no one thing that keeps causing the crashes.

I have no clue and would appreciate the advice.

Thank you.

I mostly get this error code while doing things such as playing games: starcraft 2, rift, WoW, css, and now BF3 beta. The occurances are very random and mostly happen when I am playing a game, sometimes I am not playing a game and it happens. Also sometimes it doesn't even BSoD it just randomly reboots out of no where. Every single BSoD is the same 0x00000124 stop code.

I originally tried reformatting and that obviously didn't do nothing. I've updated my video card drivers. Last night when I started playing the BF3 beta its been worse than ever, almost every single round I would almost be guarunteed a BSoD or a random reboot out of no where.

I attached all the info requested for the BSoD threads as well as a zip of 3 of the dmp's from last night but I think one of the requested files has all of the dmps, please help me!!!

I noticed it said two device drivers are not installed on the system health report. I am using wireless so the ethernet controller wouldn't be being used I dont think.

Hi guys,

I've lately been getting very frequent blue screens. They've been occurring for a while but until the last few days they've been rare. Now they are happening every few hours randomly and can be triggered 100% after I spend 10 minutes in Photoshop.

Looking at the minidumps in BlueScreenView I can see ntoskrnl.exe in every entry and most crashes are either error 0x0000003b or 0x1000007e.

PC is 6 months old, the Windows install is 4 months old. I had to reinstall windows due to an issue with my SSD which caused my PC not to boot. It was due to a known issue with Vertex 2 drives, which could be part of the problem.

I will be running Memtest86+ overnight to test for errors.

System Specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate x64, full retail
Intel Core i5 2500K
Asus P8Z68-V Pro
G.SKILL Ripjaws 8GB DDR3-1600
Nvidia Geforce GTX 460 1GB
Asus Xonar DG Soundcard
WD Caviar Green 2TB HDD
Corsair Professional HX650W PSU

Any help is much appreciated.

SSD's have been problematic recently. We've seen numerous BSOD's due to them. Here's the info that I have so far:

There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
- Update chipset and storage controller drivers to the latest available from the manufacturer of the device (not the manufacturer of the motherboard). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard!
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.-
Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a problem with the SSD OR an incompatibility with your system.
It's my opinion that SSD's aren't reliable enough (with current hardware) to be used on a system that needs to work reliably. Until I see reliability I will not recommend, nor will I use, SSD's for critical applications.

Recently, my computer has decided to show the BSOD everytime I watch videos and play games. I only play LOTR ROTWK on my computer and as it is pretty old it shouldn't really be putting strain on my computer.

My computer was custom built around 2006 and i have attached the diagnostics file with all the hardware info. I have tried updating all my drivers with driver genius but i still get the BSOD. The one I'm getting now is the ntkrnlmp.exe and before that I was getting a c-media ac97 BSOD which was rectified by updating my Asus xonar dg sound card driver.

EDIT: I just was playing and got this error:

My profile states Win7 Pro 64x which is my 'home' machine. This post is for another 'work' machine that is 32bit.
I inherited a Windows 7 machine because it 'has issues'. I started from scratch and reloaded Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 32x Ver: 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601. It works well except it freezes (It has no recognition of the mouse or keyboard) randomly either while Win7 is loading (stops at logo screen) or anytime while in use. I have learned if it freezes while booting this works: Hard shutdown, reboot into Safe Mode then only do "Restart" and it works fine. Until a random freeze.

I have a Toshiba a200 Satellite laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit (which I recently installed as a fresh install to try and solve my problems). I have several problems, and I'm not sure if they are related or seperate to each other. Here they are:

Often, when I am away from the computer, even if it's only for a few minutes, when I come back it is frozen -- the screen looks normal, but the mouse won't move and the system won't respond to Ctrl + Alt + Delete. I have to hold down the power button until it goes black, and then reboot.
Often when I reboot, and almost always when I boot up for the first time of a morning, the computer fails to start -- it will get to a black screen and freeze forever, or it will freeze on the "Windows is Starting Up" screen, and I will have to hold down the power button again to shut it off. It will usually start after the second or third time.
Sometimes, firefox (and sometimes other programs too) stops responding for about 30 seconds, and then comes back fine. It's not that bad, but it seems a bit odd. This is just a minor annoyance -- the other two problems are more worrying.
I've attached a zipped folder containing the reports from the SF Diagnostic Tool.

I hope someone can help me. I'd be really grateful.

Not sure if this will help, but the system has frozen twice in the past few hours, and this error occured both times in the event viewer:

Sometimes Windows can take forever to shutdown. Its not just with one installation but with many I have noticed this fault that Windows will leave you in the dark as far as what its doing when shutting down. I wish there was an add-on or some registry setting that would enable diagnostic details to be displayed on the screen as far as what its doing instead of a spinning circle! Sometimes you just want to know if you should just hit the reset or wait..

I am new to these forums and unsure whether this is the correct formum to post my comment.

I recently followed your instructions at to remove Windows Diagnostic on a friend's XP computer.

The computer was successfully cleaned except that Windows Diagnostic had mischieviously changed the properties of "Documents and Settings" folder and all subfolders to "Hidden". So My Documents, Favourites, Start Menu, Desktop settings, etc, could not be seen or accessed. I fixed this by unhiding all the folders that should not be hidden (by comparing folder properties on another XP computer)

I thought that you could consider adding this information to your removal instructions.

Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

Hello everyone.. Ran across this link

in another (GASP, CHOKE) forum and thought I'd post it here for review/ comments.

I used the download file to create a boot floppy which runs the diagnostic. You also have the option of burning it to a CD.

One advantage I see over other memory diagnostics I've used, is this one runs it's test sequence (a set of 8) continuously until you stop it. This allows one to run a repeateitive test sequence over an extended period of time (like over night) and have a better chance of detecting an intermittent fault.

Check it out

Hello,If it is one thing that I have noticed from working on Dell computers, it is that most of them use the tools provided by Dell a little differently from model to model. Especially if your PC is a few years old. You may need to insert one of the disks that came with your PC, if you have one that is a couple of years old. The newer Dell's don't come with any of the disks unless you beg them, and pay $10.Most of the newer Dell's that have the diagnostics onboard, are generally accessed like this.1. Turn on (or restart) your computer.2. When the DELL? logo appears, press F12 immediately.3. When the boot device list appears, highlight Boot to Utility Partition and press Enter.4. When the Dell Diagnostics Main Menu appears, select the test you want to run.Hope this helps, nos

I've experienced some strange events on my computer and I thought the first thing I'd do is run some disk diagnositc tools. I have five physical disks:
C: system/program disk
D: backup of C
E: data disk
F: backup of E
G: Spare disk ... using as 2nd backup of C

Since C & D are Western Digital devices, I downloaded one of their LifeGuard Diagnostics: DLGDIAG for Windows, and ran the "Extended Test" against C, D, and G. All passed. The control panel says that SMART status is not available -- I forgot how to turn that on (as far as I know, it should work with all five drives).

Any hints on a more demanding disk test that would not wipe the disk clean ... I do not want to have to reinstall my software because of the test. For what it is worth, I'm using Acronis True Image to make image copies of C to D and G.

Suggestions appreciated!

I'm resurrecting WDT for Win 10, it's been quite useful at Eightforums - but Win 10, especially with digital entitlement, has different needs.

I uploaded a beta at github for those that would like to test and give feedback in terms of what is required etc. The thing at EF was I was one of few interpreting the diagnostic report, so making the report itself more user friendly is one of the main things we need to sort out.
The current report is almost verbatim what Windows' licensingdiag.exe utility produces.

NB Office is phase 2 so that will not be a priority right now.

Releases ˇ Superfly-Inc/Windows-Diagnostic-Tool ˇ GitHub

PS It also needs a new name.

NB: It may hang on first use - if so close and restart... it's a known bug.

Hi. I have had my PC perfectly running since 2010. I have played all kind of video games with no problem with my GXT 580. Recently I hired and installer to add more ram to my PC and a SSD drive. He tried for a lot of time to install the additional ram and did some stuff on the bios with no avail. He then told me that he was going to leave the PC at that (with the original ram) and installed the SSD. Everything was great and I have been using my PC for almost 6 months without problems. The problems started last week when I decided to play again some video games. Whenever I was playing games (Planet Side 2 or GTAIV) then the infamous BSOD appeared. I think that if I never played any video games (since the new installation) I would have never experience the BSOD. I highly suspect of something the installer did. Please, please help me!! Thank you so very much!!!

Got infected with this virus, which looks and acts just like what is described in the Hard Drive Diagnostic Uninstall Guide. On starting up, it starts going through its thing, but when I ctrl-alt-delete, Task Manager button was greyed out! I got it back by booting in safe mode with command prompt and then deleting this from the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DisableTskMgr

Now I can ctrl-alt-delete and stop the popups that the malware displays, but then I am just stuck in a blank, black safe mode screen with no taskbar. I can pull up a command prompt, but no idea what to do with it. I can get back into the task manager, but nothing is running in applications, and the list of processes doesn't mean anything to me.

I'm ready to make a log, but not sure how to get the log-making files onto the computer.
Thanks in advance.

I ran the extended test overnight and this morning it had rebooted into Vista. The problem is that there are no results in the toolbar to be viewed as the tutorial said it should be. Where can I view the results of the memory test?

A:Memory Diagnostic Tool Problem

Which memory test, which tool, and which tutorial? I'm presuming that you're using the built in memory tester - and it should've given you a notice if it passed the test or if it found any problems. If you didn't get a message, then I'd suspect that the test terminated abnormally - so you'll have to run the test and see if you can get a message from it (or see when it terminates). This'll involve a lot of boring, staring at the screen - but I've found not evidence of a log file or results page that will be displayed. Here's a link to the BC tutorial on the memory test:

I'm trying to augment the HP USB 3-in-1 diagnostic tool, which also includes the ability to update the BIOS on any machine.  I've figured out that the .BIN file is the BIOS update file and to put it in the \Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\New folder to allow machines to be updated.  However, when I tried to update a HP EliteBook 8540w, it didn't work, giving me an error message of "Signature file not found." Since I'm able to update other HP systems (dc7800, EliteDesk 800 G1, ProDesk 600 G1, etc.) by putting just the .BIN file on the USB drive and selecting the update BIOS option from the BIOS, I figure it would also work using the HP 3-in-1 diagnostic tool.  Apparently, the 3-in-1 tool uses some form of CRC check to validate the BIOS file first.  The problem is, I don't know for which file the tool is looking, so I'm stuck. Does anyone know the file structure of the BIOS section of the 3-in-1 diagnostic tool?  I need to know what files need to be put in what locations in order for the BIOS update function to work correctly.  Any help which is provided is greatly appreciated. Thanks,Timothy

I have been downloading just about every diagnostic tool that I could find on Cnet, however none of them produce an error report that I can see so far. All the tools tell me what I have on my system, but what I want is a thorough analysis tool that will tell me what is wrong with my system. Does such a thing exist?

The problem I have is that my systems works ok, on a very basic level, like for tv streaming, internet and MS office. But not for anything that requires any degree of advanced graphics, even with old simple games.

I have no idea what is wrong and it is annoying because I cannot use my Steam account anymore!

Also, the fan on the graphics card goes nuts when do anything that requires it to work....

Any advice welcome!

I recently purchased a Dell Studio 1747 laptop. However, it had numerous issues. I managed to get enough replacement parts for it to finally be fixed, however, I would like to test one of my old memory sticks in Windows 7 Memory Diagnostics to see which one is defective. I had 4 GB of RAM. Surely, both couldn't be, right? I think only one of them was defective. I want to test to see which stick it could be, simple enough, right?

Even simpler question. In the Windows 7 Memory Diagnostic Tool, what is the max amount of RAM it can scan? In Vista/XP it was 4 GB. Is it the same for the Windows 7 version? I am running a 64-bit OS. If not, shall I just remove one of the existing (good) sticks of RAM and replace it with the questionable one and run the test?

I've already ran the test on my new, freshly replaced RAM, which came back all-clear, so, I know any new errors should be attributed to the extra RAM I put in.

I've recently "inherited" a laptop from my father, who on a whim decided that the 17" screen (which was essential in the previous purchase) was now too big and he needed something compact to travel. My XPS One 2710 has stopped turning on and attempting to boot.  I've looked through support/forums for info on this, but nothing matches my symptoms:
- press power button...  fans start, the power button illuminates white and a small LED indicator above it also illuminates in white...  5-7 seconds go by...
- the screen is illuminated, but is black.  No Dell logo appears.
- then the screen illumination turns off (darker black) and the white LED above the power button turns off.  The power button maintains its white illumination but the LED indicator turns off.  Fans keep spinning.
- pressing F12 to get the system diagnostics during this process does nothing.

I can't seem to get any text/BIOS/UEFI or anything to appear on the screen.  Anyone know what the source of this kind of problem is or what other indicator I should look for?   Is it likely I need to ship this back to Dell for repair?

A:XPS One 2710 - Can't get Dell logo or any boot/diagnostic info. Help?

Did you install Win 10 on this XPS 2710?
Dell hasn't tested this model for compatibility with Win 10. And if you search these forums, there are many posts about a "black screen of death" that Win 10 may cause on the XPS 2710.
There aren't many reliable fixes, aside from a new motherboard, for this problem, and quickly reverting to whichever version of Windows was installed prior to Win 10. But XPS 2710 motherboards are expensive and hard to come by...
And other fixes that seem to work for one user don't always work for other users.

Well, I have dealt with viruses in the past, even the tough ones that had to be removed manually. But this one definitely has been frustrating. I cannot seem to get rid of it, I've hunted down using a few tools and still have had no success. Anti-Virus programs are not picking it up. Now for the most part I'm stopping it from using up my CPU and blocked it from downloading and wasting my bandwidth, but I want to be rid of it. The file executable is named stdrt.exe, it creates a file folder, within Windows/temp, generating a letter/number combo title. I have tried to delete registry keys that referred to the stdrt.exe file and have removed the temp file and killed the stdrt.exe process numerous times with no success. Hi All

Can anyone recommend a hard drive diagnostic
tool for Toshiba MK6465GSX.

Have done some research on this topic and from
my understanding, there is no tool released by the
manufacturer which actually works - the story is
that Toshiba tests come back as failed even if the drive
is OK.

I currently have no problem with my drive but am
interested to know in case of any future problem.
Therefore a solution is not urgent.

I also looked at DOS Seatools however it seems
that the DOS version can only be used on Seagate and
Maxtor drives.

So if anyone has any suggestion on a bootable diagnostic
tool for my make of drive please post.

Not as good as a manufacturer's specific diagnostic, but good enough.

Good Morning,

This SF Diagnostic tool is very useful, but failed to copy the .dmp file from the workstation with the issue. At first I thought that it could have been because I was running the tool remotely, so I proceeded to ask a person in the office to run it for me and we got the same outcome. SF Tool failed to copy the .dmp file. I found this strange so I went ahead and ran it on my own work laptop running windows 7 pro 64 and it completed as expected. Any ideas why this is failing? I have attached the .zip file to see where to go from here...

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit version on a new computer (30 days old). After experiencing several BSOD, I decided to run a memory diagnostic. However, every time I try to run Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, it starts up to run it but then I get a screen saying it cannot be run because /boot/memtest.exe is missing or corrupted.

It was suggested by a helpful Microsoft tech from India that I should do a "in-place upgrade" however in following the instructions I got to the point where it asks whether I want to do a Upgrade Install and keep my files, programs, etc. or a Custom (advanced) Install but lose my files, programs, etc. The tech suggested I do the latter but I don't want to have to reinstall everything.

1. Any idea why my memtest.exe is not working?

2. What is the proper way to "rewrite" the OS (and presumably a function version of memtest.exe) onto my hard drive without losing all my data.

The way to do this would be the In Place Upgrade. Why memtest.exe isn't working - most likely because it's either not there, or the path to it is incorrect. My suggestion tho', is to download a free, bootable memory testing utility and leave the system alone (if it's working properly otherwise). Here's a link to one that I use:

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the hardware forum so forgive me and please move if appropriate!

I purchased 4GB of RAm a few mnths ago and also got a copy of Vista HP64. From the get go I had all sort of issues in Vista - games would not run, the OS seemed to crash a lot, would get messages like MS Outlooks data file was not closed properly. Windows defender would crash all the time.Tried about 15 different nVidia drivers... gave up. I tried 3 different HDDs too.

So anyway I moved back to XP because I assumed it was simply Vista.

This week I downloaded Win7RC1!! I'd heard nothing but greta things on podcasts, in forums etc. So i installed.

From the start I've had again defender crashing, "windows logon" errors, action centre shows me a LOT of errors that it's detetced and fixed. I get a few "explorer has stopped working" errors too. UGH! Games do not work - they freeze either on loading or after 30 seconds or so of gaming. I've had 4 or so BSODs which I had heard were basically unheard of in Win7! They were of varying variety.

All these erros in 3 days worth of running Win7? Seems a lot.... and errors on core components of Win7 too.

I ran Memtest86 and both my 2gb modules passsed multiple runs. I figured the RAM was ok. I swapped in a different graphics card, still the same problems. I went to the drastic measures of buying a new MB - figured... Read more

Try running with just the good module inserted. That'll (most likely) tell you if it's the RAM or not.

Memory tests are software assessments of the bits being sent through the RAM - so there's lot's of other things that can cause errors. If you're curious, read the documentation that comes with MemTest.
