BSOD When Installing Games on Steam/Launching Games Through Steam

Q: BSOD When Installing Games on Steam/Launching Games Through Steam

It started yesterday when I attempted to launch a game (Civilization V) through Steam and got the BSOD error. I uninstalled and re-installed Steam, my graphics drivers, everything I can possibly think of, including a general fix Steam itself responded to me with (which was completely unspecific to my issue - they clearly can't be bothered), and I am to the point where I have asked for a refund for my games, because it is just that hopeless.

In a last ditch effort to get my computer straight, I downloaded BlueScreenView, and this is what it has told me; Mind you, there are multiple errors.

From this afternoon (before driver re-install and disc check):
- SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION 0x0000003B
- File names listed as issues: ntoskrnl.exe and tcpip.sys
I also had this issue last night

More recently (after all of my "fixes"):
- DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL 0x000000d1
- File names listed as issues: athrx.sys and ntoskrnl.exe (again)

Even in older crashes, ntoskrnl.exe has been listed as an issue, and I don't have enough knowledge of this sort of thing to have any idea what this means! Is there hope for me?

A: BSOD When Installing Games on Steam/Launching Games Through Steam

I have disabled my wireless connection and connected to the internet to download using an ethernet cable, and all is going well at the moment.
Launching games was also an issue, but the downloading has been fixed!

Hi !! First time here (as many I think, so Hello again !!)
First of all, I'm French (well, excuse me for my (sadly) bad english ).
I've seen many BSOD marked as answered, so I'm trying here 'cause I've exhausted all my skills .

Bug Description:
Before wiping win 7:
BSOD and freeze time to time on WebBrowsing, log on screen, Steam Description. Always BSOD hal.dll (hal+0x12A3B)

After wiping Win 7 : - BSOD on The Witcher 3 (only game reinstalled ^^) (almost everytime same same moment, same moment). And everytime on Steam in any game description. Clicking on game, video charging 2 sec and freeze or BSOD.

Background: I have performed a new Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 installation 3 days ago, and still nothing.
What I have tried :
- MemTest with solo memory, and with both memory
- OCCT for GPU/CPU/Power Supply
- Hd Tune for SSD/HDD
- Almost all drivers up to date (not all but GPU, SDD Firmware, BIOS, and some others)
- Up to date Win 7
- Tried uplug all component except SSD (OS), and the BSOD was still there but many minutes later as usual
- Change RAM slot and playing with 1 ram only
- no Overcloking performed
- 100% fan speed and heat never go higher than 65? Celsius for GPU and 60 for CPU on stress mode
- Safe Mode and no freeze on Steam (althrough I can test The Witcher 3 on Safe mode ^^)

Config on my description for major components !

I'm really need help on this one, and I hope I have created the thread like you want. (Say anything and I'll correct without questi... Read more

Stop 0x124 is usually a hardware related issue, but actually it may be caused by anything and everything in the computers environment. Unfortunately the crash dumps are not very effective for the 0x124 BSODs.

Please read this: Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try

Read the article carefully. Proceed with the remaining tests. Let us know if any assistance or clarification is needed.

I decided to come back to civ 5, and when I press play, all that happens is a small box saying "checking for updates" comes up for a brief moment, followed by another box saying "Searching for steam game updates" again for a brief moment. Nothing happens after.

This also happens when I try to open skyrim. I have installed DirectX and C++ again, also restarting steam and my PC, but nothing seems to happen. I also tried executing it outside of the steam client, nothing happens in skyrim, but with civ, the box that shows what version of DirectX I want to run comes up. Whatever option I choose the same thing happens; nothing, it just closes.

I would appreciate it if someone could help, I haven't found anyone else with this problem.

Thanks.

Hi all,

I'm having a problem when I try to launch Steam games, as whatever game I try to launch doesn't actually launch. A message comes up about the game "preparing to launch" but then nothing after that happens. Some games give me an error saying Steam is not running at all, whereas others just do nothing.

I've already completed all the troubleshooting steps on Steam's website but none of them have actually fixed it. The only temporary fix that works is restarting Steam, but this becomes very annoying when I have to do it multiple times a day every time I want to play a game.

Any help on this problem is greatly appreciated - thanks

Not sure if many of you noticed, but post Windows Insider build 14936, the Steam overlay would refuse to work with 64 bit games. Starting with the public beta build of Steam that is available today, that issue is resolved.

You can opt in to Steam beta builds by going to Steam's settings>Account and clicking the "Change" button under the Beta Participation header. Select "Steam Beta Update" from the dropdown menu, hit OK and then hit the button to restart Steam.

As with any beta builds, you may experience bugs. I haven't run into any showstoppers in the time I've been running Steam betas, but your mileage may vary.

Hello, I've been having quite a few blue screens lately after installing and playing a few games I bought off the Summer Sale not too long ago, and they seem to be jumping all over the place as to what the issue really is.

It was mainly when I would play the game "Saint's Row the Third", which would result in a random BSOD between a few minutes to an hour or so of play, if the game itself didn't crash first for some reason, but I just recently installed TF2 for the first time on this new machine of mine and I've gotten several BSOD a day now as a result. Like... Now I get about 3+ crashes a day, and almost always guaranteed a crash whenever I try to run that game, compared to before where it was isolated to SR3 or the occasional one here or there.

I partly fixed it I think this morning, as I got a message about a .sys file related to Avast! Anti-Virus trying to access memory after it was freed in a BSOD message earlier on, and it improved my stability quite a bit after I uninstalled the whole progam, but I've had a few more crashes since I wiped that out earlier today. I'm at the point now where I just accept that I need help, as these issues have been messing with my PC for a few months now. I've included the .zip with the various files from the diagnostic tool, and I'd greatly appreciate any help on fixing this.

First of all, I know, its a terrible title but... its all true, and that's the best way I could think of to say it.

Now to explain my problem, I own Garrysmod, a steam source-mod. It is a game that grows dynamically as I connect to server's, download addons, and receive mandatory game updates.

The game file has exceeded 50Gb before.

After getting infected with "Windows 7 Antivirus Pro" and making (I freely admit it, and I REALLY should have known better) a terrible mistake and breaking all .exe's while removing the infection, I was forced to re-install windows. However, for whatever reason (another stupid mistake) I re-installed windows on the wrong hard-drive. So now my C: drive is only 150 Gb, and my backup (both of them) are 1TB.

I do not have the space to have garrysmod on my C: drive, which is where steam is installed (Last time I tried installing it somewhere else it would not work.)
------------------------------

Now that the background information is done lets move on to what you can help me with!

I have been looking for a way to install garrysmod on another hard-drive without reinstalling steam and trying to get it to work on another hard-drive. I believe I have found one, but I am really a coward when it comes to this sort of thing, (I HATE re-formatting) the solution I have found apparently tells the computer that the directory/file is on C: when it is actually on another hard-drive, but I found it in an old forum thread, and the mem... Ive been experiencing a BSOD whenever I play PC games e.g. Rust, CSGO.

I have not been able to find a fix for this I have tried reinstalling drivers for everything and I have also run memtest which found no errors and that is all I could really think that the problem is. This issue mostly occurs after roughly 6-10 minutes of play time, otherwise the PC runs normally. Ive checked to make sure this isn't a cooling issue which it isn't. Ive uploaded a screen cap of speccy to better help with the specs.
also I think this is and unrelated issue but certain windows updates will not install i have attached a image of this too.

A:BSOD when playing MOST steam games

Your dumps are a mixture of mainly hardware fault 124 errors and a graphics driver error which could be a knock on from the 124.

0x124's are typically related to a hardware issue and can only be isolated by stress testing the major components.

If overclocking, reset all overclocks back to their default settings and then follow these:

RAM - run for a minimum of 8 consecutive passes

RAM - Test with Memtest86+

CPU - run the HIGH test

CPU - Stress Test Using IntelBurnTest

Video - run the FURMARK test for 20mins

Graphics Card Problems - Diagnose

Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark

Storage - run the SHORT test using the DOS version

First post here. My friend recently assembled a new PC for me. I've been getting BSODs lately and I need your help on finding out why. Counterfeit installations such as yours contains heavily modified code that causes the installation to behave it unexpected ways. Analysing BSOD's and determining their causes on these sorts of installations is very unreliable.

My recommendation is to start with a clean slate, and install a genuine version of Windows. This will minimise the problems you are experiencing, and make subsequent diagnosis of BSOD's far more reliable. Once you are running a genuine Windows installation, and are still experiencing BSOD's, we will be happy to help you solve them

Hello
Recently I have been receiving a periodic BSOD on my computer. During game play, the window will become clear and minimise. The game will not recover and the event log shows the following error : "Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered." The computer continues to function until a game starts. For some games it BSODs on launch, others it happens once it loads a level. I have tried a clean install and driver updates. This does not happen every time, and in some games (such as CS:GO) disabling multi core rendering seems to avoid this issue. Hopefully someone can give me a hand with this.
Thanks in advance.

I just got a new computer built and got a new monitor along with it but a problem has arose. I can use the computer but when something that required a lot of RAM or just a lot of priority to open for example "Steam" the software in which you can download games and such (Basically XBOX or Play Station but for computer), It just lags a little bit and goes to no signal. I know the problem isn't with the monitor because I've tested other monitors and I have done the same with the cable. I'm using a DVI cable not a VGA. I have updated my drivers for my graphics card several times and on the GeForce Experience application it says my drivers are up to date. HELP!

Hi guys,

I've recently been getting random BSOD when playing games such as The Witcher 3 and Project Cars.

It doesn't seem to be a cpu temp or load issues as max temps are below 60 and load never really gets higher than 50%.

Even after observing the above I think I've traced it to be a CPU problem, but if someone were able to take a look at the attached dump file that would be great.

*edit* I have followed the rules and used the dm log collector now.

Thanks,
Dan

Hello and welcome to Sevenforums!
The cause of your BSOD is the hardware.
I would try running Memtest86+ or Seatools for DOS and Windows, try both.

Hey guys i posted here before about BSODs related to my RAM (hence the amount of dumps in the folder, i think you can ignore the majority of the older ones, the ones from today i presume will prove most helpful). I have since fixed that problem (afaik) and now present you genius' with another!

Not long ago i started experiencing bluescreen's whenever i tried to load portal 2, pretty much instantly. Other games such as CS:S or Portal 1 work fine, i'm now also experiencing the bsods with boarderlands 2.

I read somewhere that it could of been my bios, so i updated that but the problem persists.

If theres any more information you require please let me know.

Thanks,

Chris.

A:BSOD while playing Steam games?

Welcome
The best place to start, would be to make sure it is not a driver that is to cause. Im leaning toward hardware, but the reports were not clear at best.

Driver Verifier
I'd suggest that you first backup your data and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Windows 7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vista you'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer" option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the syst... Read more

Dumps are attached. the BSoD's normally occur while I'm playing certain games on steam, namely Flatout: Ultimate Carnage, Red Orchestra 2, Killing Floor
I have had the computer since Christmas and I had to reinstall windows twice because of Dell technical support being notorious for telling me to wipe my drive and reinstall windows and then they had a tech remote access my computer and download the necessary drivers.

A:BSoD while playing certain games on Steam

Your .dmp file shows a stop error of 0x124 which is a general hardware error .

Quote:
A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint.

Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress

Some generic advice.

If you are overclocking STOP. Return to the default settings at least for now.
If you are running a RAID update its driver.

I recently built a new computer and everything seems to be running smoothly; however, certain games will give me the BSoD upon startup and I'm not sure what the problem is. I'm sure it's hardware but certain games will play. For instance, I'm able to play Skyrim(and HL-2) without any incidents whatsoever. However, when I play Portal 2 or Deus Ex: Human Revolution, before the games even load I get a crash, I also get a strange error message about my GFX card when I attempt to load up L4D-2 (will update with link to a SS of the dialog box when I'm home) and that game runs but very poorly. The only non-steam game I have tried is QuakeLive(browser plugin) and it runs fine as well. All drivers are up to date. Dump file from crashes pasted below.

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests (located at this link: Hardware Diagnostics ). They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

Quote:

H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
Hard Drive Diagnostics (read the details at the link) - Test ALL of the hard drives.

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: Free Online AntiMalware Resources (read the details at the link)
There are also free, bootable antivirus disks at this link: Free Online AntiMalware Resources - Bootable Disks

Please stop using the Turbo mode (and remove any overclocks) while we're troubleshooting. See if that restores system stability.

Then please run the rest of the free diags at the Hardware Diags page

You have multiple STOP 0x101 and 0x124 errors, this is most likely a hardware error - but it can be caused by compatibility issues, low-level driver problems, or even malware. The diagnostics listed above are the first step in troubleshooting these problems.

Hi,

I've been having this problem for a while now but have pretty much just been ignoring it, but its got to the stage where I can't play games without it happening. I've tried googling the errors I get but am not sure if what is coming up is specific to my problem.

I'm running windows 7 x64, I have a GTX 660SC and an i5 3570k processor. I am not overclocked. I have attached the file generated with DM Log collector, if anyone could give me any help it would be much appreciated. I believe the latest blue screen is the most frequently occurring one, although there does seem to be a few that pop up.

You have a lot of errors with stop code 124. This stop code relates to hardware errors. Analyzing one of the dump file shows that there is problem with CPU cache:

This problem has occurred "somewhat"(I don't know when exactly) recently. I used to be able to play full screen games just fine but now (for some reason), everytime I launch a full screen game, it auto minimizes.

When I alt+tab back(or click the game icon on the task bar), it remaximizes the game but quickly gets minimized after a second.

Games play fine while in "windowed" mode(Warcraft 3, etc).. Full screen keeps minimizing.

I use Windows Vista Ultimate (64 bit):

Nvidia GeForce 8300(onboard video card).
I've done scans with Avast, Malware Bytes, and Super Antispyware and they all found nothing.

Three months ago(same system), full screen games played fine however I was on sort of a "full screen" gaming break, so I only recently tried playing full screen games like Warcraft 3 and this is when I encountered the "auto minimizes" problem.

The only major difference(between the time full screen games worked and now) is Avast 5. I upgraded from Avast 4.8 to Avast 5, other than that, there were no other major changes with the computer I am on.

Avast 5 is on Silent/Gaming mode, and I tried disabling all the shields temporarily to see if it would fix the issue but it didn't.

Does anyone have any ideas(or need anymore info that may help)? Any help will be appreciated, thanks.
Edit: I found a solution(though still looking if there is another way to "fix" this issue) - Right click on a program shortcut(or progr... Read more

Hello,

2 days ago, I had a couple BSOD errors which occurred when playing "Counter-Strike: GO". I figured that they were related to my graphics drivers, and since then have updated them. The BSOD stopped occuring after that.

Today however, a new BSOD error occured, talking about a potential bios issue, however there was no driver listed and no dump was collected after the issue. Because of this I decided to use verifier.exe to figure out which driver caused the issue.

I followed the steps outlined here and my system did indeed bsod upon startup, before even reaching the user screen.

This dump file should be the most recent one, and the one I am having trouble with. The required files are attached.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi There,

This last one you are concerned with is caused by Comodo,

Code:

Probably caused by : cmdguard.sys ( cmdguard+8339 )

You might want to uninstall it for the time being if you are troubleshooting another issue.

When you say a potential BIOS issue, what was it that pointed you to that?

This computer was able to handle them just fine until a week ago when I noticed extreme changes in speed and gui not showing up properly. I don't recall installing anything recently other than updating steam games. But I did notice they started happening more when I verified the game's cache and it reinstalled the whole game.

It also happens when the internet browser is left open for more than 20-30 minutes.

PLEASE HELP , after extensive searching I am led to this site to try and sort out my problem

Until recently I have had no problems playing games that I have launched from steam. Only recently have I started to notice that when I launch specific games in my games library the BSOD with the system_service_exception error code 0x0000003b appears, this can be intermittent.

I have installed blue screen view and it seems to indicate that the driver atikmdag.sys and ntoskrnl.exe is causing the issue linked to the ati kernel mode driver and NT kernel and system which are their file names respectively, I have tried reinstalling the new catalyst drivers but this doesnt seem to make any difference. this is as far as I have gone

the minidump is uploded
the age of my system now is approximately 2 and half years - I have also considered updating my motherboard e.g flash bios and update chipset drivers but I do not know if this will make any difference.

Any thoughts or opinions will be greatly appreciated . Thank you

Ok, so this is very likely to be a hardware issue. I once had this problem my self, my fix was to clean out the dust. Even though there was none veiwable i took a vacuum and cleaned it. It worked. Now check for dust, dirt etcc. Next if you have overclocked STOP and revert. Follow the posted link above it has all of the needed information. And the most likely solution to your issue. If you are still having problems, i suggest lowering v-core. This do not touch for now though.

And i also suggest running these to help diagnose hardware for any issues.

Stresstests:
Ram : RAM - Test with Memtest86+
General hardware: Hardware - Stress Test With Prime95 ( (Three pre-set configurations are available: Small FFTs and In-place FFTs, and Blend. Small and In-place modes primarily test the FPU and the caches of the CPU, whereas the Blend mode tests everything, including the memory.)
Graphics: Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark (Do the above Graphics test only with the latest drivers, and then Run it until the temperatures stop increasing; should be less then 10 minutes. If you don't see any crazy glitches or distortion on the screen, The test most likely passed. Take note if the Temperature gets too high, or you see Visual artifact - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia to stop the test.)

I've had this computer for 5 months now and it only started to do this about 20 days after I switched from Windows 10 back to Windows 7. Today is like the 25th day after that or so.

Some remedies I've tried was to install all the optional updates from Windows Update, running CHKDSK, running sfc /scannow, and decreasing the maximum processor state via the Power Options menu. It seemed to work fine for a day then back to the same problem and I can't seem to figure it out...

Used SF Diag Tool v4 (recommended on seven forums) to retrieve my files.

Good day, I've been having BSODs while playing Steam games. Sometimes, I also get it when I'm just browsing the net using Chrome.

Thank you very much!

PS
I have monitored my temps (using CAM and hwmonitor) for a long time, I haven't had any of my internals overheat.

The first blue screen i received today was while playing Borderlands The Pre-sequel, and gave me a Memory-Management error. The second blue screen was during a CounterStrike game and gave me the Critical Structure Corruption error. I recently built this PC and have done nothing that would put it in danger. I ran the windows memory diagnostic and during the test it gave me a hardware error. I have not run memtest yet, but will be doing it over the course of tonight. Just looking for some help from the forums. Thanks in advance for any help. VELOCITYY-Wed_08_05_2015__03205_16.zip

Hi ScVelocityy,

Welcome to the 8forums.
I have looked a little bit at your dump files and I think the critical structure corruption error is related to your memory.

Download and run MemTest86+, How to test and diagnose your ram with MemTest86+ | Sevenforums.

Hello everybody,

I have built a custom computer couple months ago and began to notice blue screens off and on, sometimes it would fix itself and I would not see one for days but now it has become a bit consistent when playing most 3D applications. I performed my own tests to see if any hardware issues might exist, I did a memtest with no problems in the memory, swapped videos cards, installed every single driver from sound card, to video card, solid state and beyond, However I still get this problem. I also went into my bios setting to ensure that nothing is overclocking my CPU. I had both video cards (NON SLI because it would always bsod in sli) so I was using one of the cards dedicated for gaming for a little while. The problem would only occur when I loaded into a game. I would get a black screen and enough time to predict it was going to bsod, the game would hang and allow me to alt tab to desktop seconds before everything froze completely and crashed. I decided to take one of the video cards out and see if it duplicated the symptom, to my surprise I was able to run the game for a little while longer (approx 15-20 minutes) and then it would blue screen again. I tried this with the single card three times and continued to have the same issue. Otherwise the computer is stable on desktop with no problems so far. I have become very frustrated with this build as there are so many hardware components involved and narrowing it down would be difficult without rmaing every singl... Read more

Problem is persisting after reinstalling Windows, can't really pinpoint it to any certain program, since the problem seemed to start right after installing ''the essential'' drivers and stuff from MSI disket that came with the motherboard. I hope the files attached help, I'm sorry for not being tech savvy at all I'm happy to provide additional information if needed, provided that it is not beyond my techincal skills.

Thank you for taking your time to help,

I'm getting blue screens when playing games on steam. The games I've noticed it on are:
Skyrim
Loadout
Sleeping Dogs
DmC Devil May Cry
Shadow Warrior

According to BlueScreenView the cause for the last few crashes is dxgkrnl.sys, and has previously been atikmpag.sys. As far as I know the drivers for my graphics card and motherboard are up to date, and I'm excluding my Steam folder from F-Secure's real-time scanner.

Thanks for any help!

Hi all,
I've been getting pretty frequent BSODs ever since updating to win 8.1.

As far as I can recall, they seem to have been triggered by playing Steam games (CounterStrike, to be precise). From then on, the BSODs will pop up even when I'm not in a game (and without Steam running in the background).

The BSODs are (sequentially):

1) DRIVER_VERIFIED_DETECTED_VIOLATION
2) IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
3) A completely blue screen with little white squares
4) KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE
5) IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (frequent appearance)
6) DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (avgloga.sys)
7) DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (dxgmms1.sys)
8) NTSC_FILE_SYSTEM (Ntfs.sys)
9) SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
10) SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (dxgkrnl.sys)

I've removed AVG antivirus after BSOD #6, but they still keep coming.

So I did a clean install of 8.1, installed all the latest drivers (from the ASRock and AMD website) and hoped for the best.

It ran smoothly for a day or two, and that was when I thought I'd fire up Steam and give it a try.

Barely 10 secs into a game and the BSOD appeared:

'irql_not_less_or_equal'
I rebooted it and an hour later this guy came up:

'attempted execute of no execute memory'

Then the system ran with no hiccups for the rest of the night.

This morning I got a bit cold turkey, so I went into Steam again for about 30 mins. No BSOD!

I'm wondering, does any of you guys here know what is going on?

Hey,

since a few days I experience BSOD while playing/starting Steam games (noticed it the first while playing Payday 2, tried Space Engineers later and it happened there too).

This only happens while playing or starting Steam games, I played WoW for hours now without any problems but as soon as I try to play a Steam game I get a BSOD. Also my games now got black borders which I was able to fix for Payday but it's still strange that they appeared at the same time as the BSOD.

Have been experiencing BSOD regularly and occasionally RSOD. It is happening at least once each time I play intensive steam games, most recently Project Cars.
I am not overclocking.
First i though it must be the temp of the CPU or GPU, but the CPU is sitting at 45 deg and GPU is maxing out at 62 deg as i have an aggressive fan mapping to ensure that it was keeping cool.
Have stressed tested memory with memtest86+, CPU with Prime 95 and GPU with FurMark
Windows is up to date.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi timo,

Welcome to the 8forums.

The level 0 cache of the CPU is causing the problems.
What tests from Prime95 have you performed?

Please make sure your drivers are updated.
Please uninstall ASUS software.
Please make sure your BIOS is set at default settings.

Hi I am currently having problems with the BSOD. Windows seems to think it is a memory problem, but every time I run the windows memory diagnostic tool it doesn't find any problems. The BSOD occurs most frequently while playing games on steam, however it has happened at random. I don't have the error code that pops up during the BSOD but I will try to get it if I see it during a crash again. Sorry I am a bit of a computer novice, but I have included the .zip file that is requested. Batman Arkham Asylum gave me a notice once before a BSOD that said I was out of virtual memory, which I thought was related to RAM. I currently have 8gb of RAM.

I have adjusted the sticks of RAM on my motherboard just to see if it was a bad port after the BSOD started, but that did nothing. I would like to know if it is indeed a memory problem, and how to fix it. Or at the very least know what is causing the problem.

Thanks.

Welcome
From your dump reports the problem seems to be due to a bad driver or a hardware problem, which includes memory. Based upon your post, memory will be the place to start. Take this test for 8 passes. Then test each stick in a good slot for 6 passes each.

Hello, and welcome to SevenForums!

First of all, have you overclocked your graphics card at all?

The 0x00000124 error code appears during a hardware complaint, such as overheating. If you have overclocked your GPU, RESET IT IMMEDIATELY. This could be causing numerous critical errors in your GPU, causing the whole system to crash. Also, overclocking can severely damage your GPU. I would only recommend it if you know what you are doing and are not just following a tutorial.

But, this could be other things too. I see that your GPU driver is WAY out-of-date. Download the latest drivers via the AMD website.

Best of luck,

PeregrineX

Unfortunately I forgot to record the error, but next time the BSOD occurs (which is randomly), I'll update this post.

So whenever I open a steam game, or alt tab from a full screen game, I either get the errors: "PAGE IN NONFAULT AREA" or "SYSTEM SERVICE EXEMPTION"

I recently just bought this computer, but this occurred on my old one as well. Any help would be appreciated, and apologizes if I left anything else out.

Hello!
Since last weeks I've had multiple BSOD's and it seems to happen mostly while I play games through steam. Games like GTA4, The witcher 2 and Sleeping dogs cause the crashes while I for some reason can play Shogun Total war 2 for hours without problems. Games that are not connected to steam, like Battlefield 3, seems to work good as well. I don't have any cd/dvd tools like Daemon tools installed. I would be very grateful if someone could help me with this problem.

Since then, the PC keeps crashing when I download large games off steam and sometimes it crashes while I'm watching videos on youtube. Two errors show at different times when it crashes and the main error is: driver_irql_not_less_or_equal (wdf01000.sys) and the other one is: driver_irql_not_less_or_equal (usbxhci.sys).

Here is the dump file.

DESKTOP-E7VPUUU-Sat_27_08_2016__80359_84.zip

Your help is much appreciated. =)

What USB devices are plugged in? Please disconnect everything and let me know if the issue still occurs. Try running sfc /scannow from cmd as admin.

I have been having troubles with my Graphics cards ever since I got this computer. Some days it works fine others its a complete disaster. Recently I got a few games and when the games I used to play crashed or whatnot it would just close the game. Now I am getting BSOD and having it reboot my PC. I use Soluto to help me find what what might of caused the problem and this is what is sent to me :

Bug check code: 00000116

Probably caused by: dxgkrnl!TdrResetFromTimeout Driver

The VIDEO_TDR_ERROR bug check has a value of 0x00000116. This indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed.

Keep in mind I have two of the same graphics cards. I used to cross-fire but then Realized no games would play with it activated so I disabled them. After a while I tried messing with my setup so I could have three monitor setup ( two monitor and 1 40"HDTV. While im still using only two of the monitors I orignally got my first BSOD when i was trying to play a game on the TV monitor and no longer use the TV.

I am very out of touch with computer skills and I dont know anymore what else I should do to try and fix this problem. Ive thought about getting a new graphics card to try and solve the problem because for the last few years problems only seem to occur with the Card and nothing else but i could find another solution then spending money that would be great. Thanks in advance!

System Specs

Samsung Series 3 Laptop Model NP350V5C.
Age: About 4 months.
CPU: Intel Core i5 3210M @ 2.50 GHz
RAM: 8 gigs
GPU: AMD Radeon. HD 7670M

BSOD Description

I was playing Portal 2 tonight for roughly 90 minutes, when on a loading screen, the game froze. Next there was some short, vertical, multicoloured lines that were overlaid on the loading screen, that kinda looked like a small barcode repeated over and over in a line. The system then crashed to the BSOD.

The BSOD itself said that "attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed". I did take a picture of it, if anyone wants me to upload that.

The game is a fresh install done just last night. I have had this problem before with Portal 2 (hence the reinstall), and I also have had it with Dear Esther and Fallout: New Vegas. At first I thought that my computer was trying to run the games on the integrated HD 4000 on the CPU, so I set my laptop to high performance and plugged it into the wall so it would (hopefully) only run on the AMD GPU. Dear Esther and Fallout both appear to be fine (previously they crashed on start up but I was able to play about 30 minutes of each last night), but Portal 2 crashed again tonight.

To my knowledge, my graphics card drivers are up to date, as the version number on my computer matches that on the Samsung website.

Hello!

My Dell XPS L502X laptop is constantly having hard crashes, watchdog BSODs, and extremely high disk (and sometimes memory) usage. This normally occurs while using the Netflix/Hulu apps or running games in Steam, both separately or simultaneously. I can generally get almost an entire day of Netflix/Hulu, and sometimes am able to play a game for awhile before the crashing occurs.

For reference, here are a list of the errors I have encountered:

In the last 48 hours I downloaded Skype and BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing). I also updated my drivers for my AMD Radeon HD 6950 video cards (as part of attempting to resolve a BSOD related to ATI drivers.
When attempting to play any Call of Duty games on Steam, I will either get a black screen that then closes itself, or a BSOD. Also, when BOINC starts, I get a BSOD every time. I have uninstalled both BOINC and Skype since the issue started shortly after installing those two programs, updated my video drivers, performed repair installs on DX and VC++. Additionally, I deleted the "appcache" folder from Steam thinking that perhaps I had corrupted data there as the application will recreate that folder if it is missing. Lastly, I tried removing all local content for the games giving me issues and reinstalling them which when reinstalling COD:MW3 from disk causes a BSOD when I switch from Disk 1 to Disk 2. I have run out of ideas, and am hoping that the below files will assist someone in helping me.

A:Steam games in the Games application

The Games app is really intended for Microsoft downloaded games; I don't believe there is any way to put your Steam games here. However, if you would like to use the Games library that was in Win7, it carried over to 8, although it does not have a Metro
application. If you need me to help you with that I can.

Hey all.

Recently, my laptop got its first BSOD, which happened when I was switching channels in KvIRC (An IRC client). After I rebooted, the entire folder containing KvIRC was deleted, so I guess there was something with the contents that windows disagreed with.

After that, I tried opening up Steam (the video game platform), but my laptop straight away froze, crashed, and brought me to the blue screen. As far as I can tell, all steam-related files are still in place. The only recent hardware/software change to my laptop is the removal of my CD Drive. Software-wise, nothing has been installed/uninstalled in a few weeks.

After searching around for a bit, I came to a couple of threads which advised of doing a sfc /scannow, however I got the message that "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them", and I'm unable to determine which files need fixing.

I ran antivirus scans with ESET NOD32, Malwarebytes and Hitmanpro, all resulting in 0 detections.

I tried recreating the BSOD instance, and as thought, launching steam caused another BSOD, except this time it was delayed, by 30 minutes. My laptop has been running for 12 hours now (I didn't try launch steam again), and so far, so good.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide me

EDIT: I've included the SFCdetails.txt in the attachments, in case this can help anyone determine what's going wrong.

A:BSOD When Launching certain applications (Steam.exe, KvIRC.exe)

Just to bump my thread and also provide an update to the situation.

Since the creation of this thread, my laptop underwent 5 or 6 additional BSOD events. I've managed to actually remember the error code (it's been the same one in each case) and it's 0x0000007A, followed by a few other string of 0's in brackets (I think one of them was 0x0000000000004, probably more 0's). There's also some text that reads KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR. The crashes have occurred at seemingly random intervals this time, so I don't think it's application related after all, since there's been crashes even while idling, but I might be wrong.

The only hardware/software change since the creation of the thread was the installation of a few video games (Europa Universalis IV and Civilization V). Hardware-change-wise, nothing different.

I've included an updated report, in case anything's different.

Cheers in advance for any help provided

If I was to buy a Steam game from a brick & mortar store, I realise that I must activate the game online.

BUT....

My question is, do I need to be online to actually PLAY the game, once activated?

Because if so, I won't be purchasing the games.

I was looking at a version of CoD, and another, today, quite reasonably priced.

I do not play online, and do not multi-play. I'm a 'single-player dude'.

My internet connection, while quite fast, has an 8GB/month limit, so online gaming
simply isn't an option.

Thanks.

Hello this is my first post so I apologize if this thread belongs in another area of the forums, but this seems like the right place. Before anything, I will give some general info about my desktop computer.. I know basic things about computers as I use mine a lot to play games/watch videos, etc. but not enough to troubleshoot effectively so I will give as much info as I can:

OS: Windows 8.1, 64 bit (6.3.9600 Build 9600)(?)
RAM: 8 GB
Processor: Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40 GHz (X64 based), 3401 MHz, 4 Cores, 8 logical processors
Graphic Card: AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series
Motherboard: ASUSTek (I could not get the build name/model, it said its unavailable in System Information from Admin tools)
Monitor: AOC 2367M
Network Adapter: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
Memory: I have two hard drives.. one is an SSD, the other is a regular one

So on my computer, I play a lot of games on a daily basis and while playing one on Steam (Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed) one day, and at the time, I was running Windows 7. I was in the middle of a race and the monitor screen flashed and the game crashed. I thought nothing of it, until I launched Left 4 Dead 2. Every 10 seconds, the game would freeze for about 5 seconds with a black & white horizontal bar in the middle of the screen, and then go back to normal.. but its funny, it only happens in the menu screens, but this does not happen during the actual game (this is only the case for Left 4 Dead.. everything else crashes one way or... A:Can't run most Steam games

Hi and welcome to TSG.

As you have an Asus motherboard I would recommend using Asus PC Probe II to look at temps and voltages, it is likely to be give the most accurate results. You can get this from the Asus website. Ideally it would be useful to know the temps of individual components, particularly the CPU and GPU, rather than just overall system temps. If you can get these with the PC both at idle (sat at desktop doing nothing) and under a bit of load that would be useful.

What is the exace make, model and wattage of your PC power supply?

I bought a Lenovo z580 laptop with a dedicated Nvidia GT 635m./w windows 8

Every time I open a game,Steam makes me aware that it is running off of the i5's built in HD 4000 graphics.
I have went to the Nvidia control panel on my graphics card to run when a game is open just to get the same result - Graphics are still running off the i5's HD 4000.

Why is it so difficult what is making it such a pain in the arse to simply use a built in device for what it's supposed to do.

I also have checked and all updates on graphics card are up to date.

A:Can't get GT 635M to run my Steam games

The problem probably lies within your BIOS rather then Nvidia settings. You may have to disable the Intel HD 4000 graphics in BIOS to enable the dedicated GT 635.

Hi,
I seem to have a problem with steam games, and I can't for the life of me figure out what exactly is wrong. I keep getting the BSOD whenever I try to play a source engine game (generally ranging to a minute in game). I've reformatted my computer, re-installed steam and games, and installed up to date drivers. I still get this problem even though I know I have the requirements for the game since I've played it fine before. This is the STOP message in the BSOD:

And this is the log created when I restart my computer.

Does anyone know what the STOP message means? I have two separate sticks of 1gb ram for a total of 2 gb, and the game at most only requires like 512mb. I've exhausted everything I could do. My computer is still freshly clean when I reformatted, only containing all necessary drivers/windows updates and steam+game. Hopefully someone else knows the answer to this. Thanks

The thing is that I'd like to play the games on both OS's without having to DL'd them separately for each OS.

The idea I had was to somehow tell the vista steam (I have all games installed in xp and I want vista to find them) that my profile folder is actually the one on my other partion, the xp one.
Kind of quickly and not very detailed, but hopefully you get the idea.

I have also tried everything Steam suggests and still nothing. This is really a hassle since I have to change my name and all of my console commands etc. If anyone can help that would be amazing.

Also to my last thread being closed, I own a copy of Diablo2 and the Expansion. Just couldn't find the discs, which doesn't matter now since the new patch.

All help appreciated

HELP!

I am using Windows 7 x64 bit edition. Everything works great with XP so I know I'm not having any hardware specific issues, it's definitely a compatibility issue somewhere within windows 7.

When I am playing steam games (counterstrike, team fortress 2).. about 5-10 minutes into the game, it locks up and closes. When it closes it pops up with an error but it closes out too fast to see what it says. I have an nVidia 9600 GT.

What I've tried:

-Updating my drivers to the windows 7 drivers.
-Using the drivers that windows 7 automatically installs for you.
-Running the games in compatibility mode for XP service pack 2 and administration mode.
-Reformatted three times.
-Updated directX.
-The video card is not overheating (tested it).

I really need some help. It's very frustrating and I can't figure out what's going on!

Thanks for any help.

you might want to install the drivers for your graphics card direct from nvidias site.

Hey everyone, I've had Steam for quite a while now. I used to play it all the time until April. In April, I think that was when Counter Strike:Source updated and the game started getting laggy. I've tried absolutly everything I could think of and what Steam has told me to do. I've updated all drivers on my video card and sound card and BIOS on the motherboard. I've figured out that it's not a internet thing because this has happened on my friend's cable connection. I know its not internet also because it happens to me on Half Life 2 when I play, but mostly when there's action going on. I've turned down my hardware acceleration, didn't work. I ran the diagnostics from Steam, i disabled ATI Hotkey Poller and that didn't work. I can't install Omega drivers because I have Windows XP Pro x64. I don't think its my OS because when I had regular Pro, it was the same. I've completely reinstalled my whole computer with everything and it still does this. I'm really sure its the software because it doesn't do this in BF2, while I'm running everything High there. I tried running 3dmark to give some support there, but my cpu keeps overheating and shutting down before I get a score. I've gone to pcpitstop.com and they say I have poor video and poor cpu performance. I'm running a P4 640 3.2ghz w/HT using the 64 bit on a ECS RS400-A with a Radeon x850 xt. And now, I've created a HiJackThis log:

I Recently broke my mouse and bought a new one to replace it.

But steam doesn't seem to want me to change it.

When I use the mouse to look around, the delay between my moving the mouse and the view moving is terrible, coupled with the mouse being too sensitive.

I know for a fact that it is steam as only steam games do this.

Any ideas (short of re-installing steam) as to how I can solve this problem?

A:Games In Steam don't like my mouse.

Just a shot in the dark but you could try this.

You could try the old trick.

You need to exit from Steam and delete the clientregistry.blob file typically located:
C:\Program Files\Steam\ClientRegistry.blob
The next time you run Steam it will do a short platform update and then it should finish the game updates.
Again, be sure to go check all the game properties and make sure they are set to "always keep this game up to date".

Seems to solve many of the problems people have. Hope it works for you
