BSOD after driver updates. No idea which driver is at fault

Q: BSOD after driver updates. No idea which driver is at fault

Hi, I've recently been using drivermax to update my drivers. After my updates, I've been randomly getting BSODs then and now. I looked into the minidump with bluescreenviewer but cannot find a fix to the problem. I've uploaded the minidump. Please help! I'm using a shared a computer so I don't know if the origin of the problem is caused by someone else.

A: BSOD after driver updates. No idea which driver is at fault

I didn't see the BSOD protocols....sorry! Here is the required folder. Also, i'm told that the computer crashes frequently when trying to run old pc game like bioshock or empire earth.

Hi all,
Ever since I purchased my Asus W3J (T7200, ATI Mobility X1600), I've been plagued by BSOD casued by no particular action and at completely random times and intervals. Suspecting the RAM, I replaced it (despite making it through many passes of memtest) but no dice, the problem persisted. The Windows Error Reporter tells me I have a driver problem and running my minidumps through Windb tells me the same thing but they rarely get more specific than that. I occasionally am told that my video driver is at fault but I've upgraded it every time a new one is available and have tried the Omega Drivers as well to avail. I've tried updating virtually every other driver as well since I can't be sure it's the video driver. Writing this very post somehow caused a BSOD so I've been forced to switch to my faithful Linux backup computer for the time being. Since the T7200 can support it, I think I may try to install Vista 64-bit and hope that a new set of drivers will resolve the problem. Is this likely? The three most recent Minidumps will be attached as soon as I can get the other computer running long enough to edit this post.

Thanks!
~ Brett

A:BSOD likely from Driver Fault, but which one? What to do?

When you have done Windb do you continue on to the kd> space at the bottom for further analysis by typing !analyze -v and then press enter to get detailed bugging information?

I have found that zeros me right to the driver causing the issue.

Edited Update: I read your minidumps and the two from 3/11 and 3/24 point to the ntkrpamp.exe and the one on 3/26 is due to win32k.sys. From what I have been reading, some from the archives of Tech Spot itself, 80% of it points to faulty RAM. Do a MemTest86+ for at least 10 passes to see if you have any memory errors.

Others here have greater knowledge than I, but if you have bad memory that can cause all kinds of headaches.

Windows XP Pro SP3. Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop.

Perhaps once every two days or so I get a BSoD. The BSoD says the source of the problem but it not always the same each time. For example I have had

win32k.sys
ntoskrnl.exe
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
SPECIAL_POOL_DETECTED_MEMORY_ CORRUPTION
plus probably others (which I didn't keep notes on)

This has now been going on for more than a month - my system has had no problems in the prior 3 years or so. Seems pretty random - I don't know what is causing the problem. Firefox crashes quite often but it is also the program I use most. I have had MS Word crash also.

Once I restart my laptop, XP always tells me a driver is at fault but doesn't say which.

The last changes I made to my machine were adding a Logitech USB hub and upgrading to the latest version of Firefox. I can't remember if the problem were occurring before that time or not. I investigated doing a system rollback but the only things listed were automatic Windows updates and hence I did not try this.

My antivirus tells me my laptop is free of viruses.

Please help - I have no idea what to do to fix this.

A:Keep getting BSoD. XP claims it is a driver problem but I have no idea which

Hi all, received a BSOD this morning. Ran crash analyzer and it determined that the driver probably at fault is hardware disk. I can post the full analysis but it's big. Any one run into this before? I just want to be sure it's not a hardware issues (i.e. my drive).

I should also mention, I will fire up Hiren's Boot CD tonight and run some physical hard drive tests. I also recently removed the Intel Rapid Storage driver to try to isolate some issues. Doesn't look like it helped much.

I've been having frequent BSODs for a while now. They happen intermittently, usually when I'm doing something graphical such as using skype, or streaming a video. I've tried a number of different versions of ATI's graphics drivers, to no avail. I've tried reinstalling them several times.

I ran driver verifier, but I couldn't get past the Windows bootup screen with it on. On a possibly related note, every time I start the computer, this screen freezes for a second, flickers once, and then continues.

I made this build about 8 months ago. I've got an ATI Radeon HD 5770 and I'm currently using driver version 8.850.0.0. Any help is very much appreciated

Thanks

A:BSOD - maybe display driver's fault?

edit - look at whole post please added more down below

What the minidump is pointing to is a windows core file that controls your network driver.
Though I can see how you thought it was graphics related as it's call ndis.sys ...looks like something display related but it's not.

First make sure the windows file is okay and not corrupt somehow by running this
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
(it's quick and easy even if it doesn't change anything)

It would seem you have norton internet security installed. Make sure it's not accidentally blocking any system level processes (this can happen sometime and would explain your problem) ndis needs to be allowed.

I've done a memtest86 ran it for 8 passes no errors.

I have quite a few minidump files and a dxdiag attached.

These BSOD basically happen when I am using a lot of USB devices it seems or anything that uses internet. I use a Hawking hi-gain USB dish hwu8dd rev. b and my mouse and keyboard are USB.

Could it be a possible failing hard drive? I've made sure all of my cables were secured correctly.

I've also made sure I am virus free and malware free I use avast anti-virus.

My system is stable if I am not doing a lot of things at once. But if I am running a browser or two, a game and an email client I will get a blue screen shortly after. I've noticed this problem while watching youtube videos or hulu I am guaranteed a blue screen.

I've done a SFC /SCANNOW in safe mode as well as a chkdsk /f nothing seems to resolve the issue.

I've gotten blue screens in the past and it seems to only have gotten worse now I can't do much of anything. I've recently added a webcam which is USB but removed it to see if it was causing the issue and still the same problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a RAID setup? First, make sure all your windows updates are done. Then update your gpu and sound drivers. Run driver sweeper after you uninstall the drivers, to clean up any leftovers in safe mode and then install the newest drivers.

Then run the memory diagnostic - search for mem in the start menu.

Then, try a clean boot.

I recently had to re-install windows in order to correct an error I was getting for League of Legends, but after stepping away from the computer for a few minutes, I came back to the computer in the middle of it restarting after a crash. Surely enough, there was also a minidump in the folder, so I'm hoping someone can help me make sense of this.

Included in the zip folder is the CBS log I got after running sfc.exe to check for corrupt files, which came back with a 'yes, but cannot repair'.

Tell us when you get these BSODs, i.e., randomly or are you doing something specific at the time.

You have errors 0x3B and two 0xA but they only cite Windows OS drivers and these are usually too general to be of much diagnostic help.

By the way, I noticed your system hardware (nice set-up; love to hear your feed back on that 635 processor) and you are running 6 gigs of RAM. Try running with just 4 gigs. Do you gain stability?

Hi,

I just uploaded Windows 7 professional yesterday (clean install, using windows xp previously). Everything went smoothly as far as I could tell and Windows 7 is now running on my laptop.

However every 10 minutes or so the screen freezes, goes black for a second and than returns to normal and a message appears in the bottom right hand corner of the screen saying 'Display driver Intel graphics accelerator for windows vista(R) has stopped responding and successfully recovered'

One time after this happened I got the a blue screen with a warning message (it was too fast to copy anything down) and than my laptop restarted itself. I have added a zip file to this message taken from \windows\minidump as I saw someone suggested to do this on another thread... I hope it helps with the diagnosis.

I'm not sure if the BSOD came as a result of the display driver fault as mentioned above. I'm not very savvy when it comes to computers.

One more piece of info - after installing windows 7, I installed all the recommended and critical updates for windows, but none of the optional ones. I can provide a screen dump of these if needed.

Hope I've given enough information and would really appreciate any help.

Thanks

You need to update your Intel Driver:

Code:
Driver: igdkmd32.sys
Refers to: Intel Graphics driver
Dated: Wed May 06 19:13:40 2009
Use the Intel? Driver Update Utility and check for a Win 7 32-bit version:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Default.aspx

Aim to update your drivers as many are dated 2009.

Once updated reboot the system and see if your issue remains?

Lately I've been having all the games on my computer crash within about 2-3 minutes of starting them, and sometimes I get a Driver IRQL Not Less or Equal BSOD in place of a crash. I had two of these BSOD's last week, and all of them seem to be followed by a Page Fault in Non-Paged Area BSOD. I've ran Memtest 86+ to make sure there's no fault with my ram, and they cleared 3 passes, and chkdsk shows no errors either. BlueScreenView reports that the Driver IRQL error is associated with a USBPORT.sys driver, and the Page Fault BSOD is associated with a msahci.sys driver.

A:Driver IRQL Not Less or Equal BSOD followed by Page Fault in Non-Paged

Hi Barman42.

As you are having multiple bugchecks with multiple probable causes, the first thing that you should do is to test your RAM modules for possible errors. How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Let us know the result.

Hello all,

I just got a new PC but have been suffering from what appear to be totally random BSoD occurrences. It has occurred when a wide variety of programs are being run and I cannot find any commonalty between the events. Based on the error codes (driver irql_less_or_not_equal is the most common) I suspect it is a driver fault but I am not savvy enough to identify what one(s) is/are at fault. I've updated every driver I know of to what appears to be the latest verison and done a clean reinstall on graphics drivers to 353.30. I've unplugged all peripherals barring my mouse, keyboard and monitor and had the same result. Sometimes it will go hours without failing and sometimes it will occur multiple times during startup. I've also ran SFC /scannow as an admin with no faults found in 5 attempts. Malwarebytes has turned up no threats.

My current specs are:

Mobo - Asus Gryphon Z97 Armor Edition
CPU - Intel i7- 4790K
RAM - TeamGroup Vulcan Gold 16GB @ 2133MHz
GPU - EVGA GTX 980 Ti Superclocked ACX 2.0+

Brand new newbie to the forum - found it through googling "page fault in non pagefault error" so you guys made a good name for yourselves solving that particular problem

Anyway on to my woes...

I've got a 3 year old Medion Deskbrick that has been giving me heartache. The specs are:

P4 2.66 on a generic brand mobo
256 mb ram
250 PSU (more details to follow regarding this PSU)
160 GB HDD
NEC 3520A Burner

Thats the basic gist of the system. There used to be a video card, there used to be a sound card, there used to be a WinTV card but I removed all of those to try troubleshooting the problem.

Now onto the details:
1) Since there's no video card in, the integrated video card kicked in and is currently taking 32mb out of my 256 ram so my ram is detailed at 224 MBs during memtest.
2) Memtest seems to think my ram is ok after 7 or so passes but based on what I've ready in these here forums, memtest LIES frequently.
3) Originally I had a 250 PSU that was giving about 8A to the 12 rail....yea...you read right, 8A...needless to say, after trying to verify the ampage coming out with a voltmeter, the PSU quickly died and now I'm using a 250 backup PSU with a 18A 12 rail so everything should be fine in regards to the PSU for the barebone ness of my system.
4) The harddrive used to have things in it...but in my desperation, I did what anyone who panics would do: I formatted both my C: and D: partitions.
5) While trying to install Win... Read more

Hi there I'm new to this forum. I recently bought a refurbished Asus N56-VM laptop and straight away had a BSOD. It got to the point where the whole system was incredibly slow so I then put a fresh install on a new drive and continue to suffer from different errors including Page Fault errors, Driver IRQL and others. I have updated the drivers with DriverMax but to no avail. I have run Memtest86 and no errors were found. If anyone could help me out that would be great. Please see the attached files. Thanks in advance!

Which antivirus do you use? I am failing to find any. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.
Download, install and update those, and then run full system scans with both of them, one by one, too.

Free up the startup.
Click on the Start button
Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
Select the “Startup” tab.
Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
Apply > OK
Accept the restart.
I have seen some failing modules there, like nVidia filter driver and Athros network driver; but it is worthy to do these steps complete and observe the situation. If the scans come clean, and the situation remains the same, we will go for further troubleshooting.

So I just recently got a new laptop and I put windows 7 on it, I've been looking all over these forums trying to figure out these dang BSOD's and haven't found anything that seems to work. seems like all the info points to drivers.... I've installed / uninstalled / reinstalled Nvidia driver and plenty more. I will post the dump files, but I cannot post the system specs with the program in the "how to post BSOD post" or whatever that thread is, because the program crashes my computer and I believe it is when it gets to something about system display.... Anyways, I would really appreciate any help as this if very frustrating. In bluescreenview, it shows 14 blue screen crashes just from TODAY, all driver power state failures..... help would be amazing, thanks guys! Also, Just tried to upload the dump files and it says that I do not have permission to access them when attaching, not sure why? Thanks in advance everyone!

Hello,

I am hoping someone can provide some assistance in getting rid of this BSOD problem.

Here is what happened.

I was using two driver update programs: One called Driver Booster 2 by Iobit and the other called Slimdrivers.

I updated various drivers including Nvidia which I had previously uninstalled but it kept popping up so I just let it go. The next thing I know, after that is installed and there were no more drivers left to install, I ran Windows Update and it also wanted to installed Nvidia again. I didn't have much choice in the matter...before I knew it, it was installing and I had to restart my computer. When the computer turned on again, I used it for a little while then it started to overheat something terrible. The computer was so hot I thought it was going to start on fire. Almost as soon as it started overheating, I got the BSOD and within a second it restarted or shut down. I can't remember which. The fan was running at top speed but that still wasn't enough. I could have cooked an egg on the backside of this thing.

So the next day, I started the computer up again and I uninstalled Nvidia completely using Iobit's Uninstaller to remove all traces of it in my computer. But the other problem I have now is that it still runs dangerously hot within a few hours.

I've uploaded the zip file as per the instructions. There must be some kind of conflict going on.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

A:BSOD after installing NVidia updates and other driver updates

The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

Dont run any disc cleanup program before you upload another zip.

I have had BSOD for a while and being super busy I did not have time to look at it and get it fixed. Well Being a computer guy I assumed I could fix it myself. But with tons of research and trying to use every guide I can find I decided to try here(probably should have came here first). Today I started Driver Verifier and having it check all drivers. It crashed a couple times before I realized it was a process I had to stop. I then came here to try and get some help sorting out the driver. I recently set up a new Dell 7710 Precision Workstation (Xeon E3-1535M v5 w/Intel HD Graphics P530; Nvidia Quadro M5000M; Windows 7 Pro). The Dell Precision Optimizer (DPPO) tells me there are no updates at all (no Critical, Recommended, or Optional). However, the Intel Driver Update Utility tells me I have an older chipset (14.6.1.1030) that should be replaced by a newer chipset (10.0.27). I don't know if the DPPO is taking into account particular aspects of this system that make the 14.6.1.1030 the “correct” (even if not the latest) chipset. Perhaps the DPPO should override the Intel utility. Any thoughts?

Hello,

I have been having issues with wireless module not showing available networks on this laptop recently. I have had to reboot to get the wireless networks to show up. I checked the Dell site the other day and installed an updated driver for the wireless adapter, as well as the video card, sound card, and chipset. I have had 2 blue screens since updating these drivers (today and Tuesday). One other new item is Kaspersky internet security, which was installed earlier in the week. I have attached the information for review- please let me know if any additional information is needed. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Are you referring to a permission denial by attempting to attach the dumps directly? You'll need to zip them first before sending them over, as only certain file types are permitted. Plus there's a 5 MB limit (doubt that's the cause though).

I haven't been able to update my nVidia drivers for over a year now. It's starting to cause troubles: games started to crash. Now when I shutdown my PC it does the automatic Windows updates and when I turn it back on, I get the same BSOD. I have a feeling it's the video drivers that cause issues, so today I tried uninstalling them and installing the newest ones (306.97), but it didn't work so I had to do a system restore. BTW, my current driver version: 285.62.
P.S. I'm shutting down my PC by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del and then Shutdown, so it doesn't install the updates.

A:Cannot install any driver or windows updates, getting BSOD 0x0000007E

Welcome aboard, madbuddha.

Your basic problem is the dispaly driver, as the latest version is somehow unstable in cases. I would recommend you roll it back to an earlier one, a known good stable version, which I suggest usually, and in most of the cases it works.
Download and install Driver Fusion.
Reboot the computer in Advanced Boot Options, safe mode. Search Driver Fusion in your start menu, and remove all components of your nVidia display driver.
Boot normally now. Go to Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers, Drivers > Beta and Legacy; search there with your cards particulars for GeForce 306.23 Driver, dated 13.9.2012 and install it.
A few problems are there with the storage driver, as I am seeing. A search revealed that you are using nForce as the chipset driver, and that includes nvstor.sys as the storage controller driver. You need to try to update nForce, as it contains not only the storage controller, but also network controller and a lot of other vital drivers.

Go to Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers, search for nForce, as per your motherboard's chipset specifications.

What is most important that you have SPTD.sys installed. Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known BSOD causer. Uninstall the program at first. Then download SPTD standalone installer from Disk-Tools.com, and execute the downloaded file as guided below :
Double click to open it.

Problems started earlier in the month when updating my NVidia drivers. Computer worked for the last few weeks but would get random display errors. I attempted to revert to previous drivers however it did not fix the problem. 2 days ago, computer started crashing and will now only boot in safemode. I attempted a restore prior to the NVidia install, but the restore point was not available for that time period.

I've also uninstalled/reinstalled the video card and windows automatically installs the drivers.

I uploaded the zip file per instructions.

Hello,

After many many hours of searching forums for solutions I have been unable to find a solution to my problem - so I decided to open a topic of my own and hope someone can help me with my problem specifically.

My problem is similar to this topic, although the solutions posted there aren't working for me. In short: I have been experiencing random but frequent BSODs (16 and counting) with the message 'driver power state overload' being displayed.

In my quest for a solution I wanted to upgrade my drivers, when I noticed my Nvidia Geforce 650M graphics card seems to have disappeared. When I try to install the latest driver from Nvidia's website I get the error 'graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware'. Attempting to open the Nvidia control panel gives me the message 'An Nvidia graphics card was not detected on your system' and I cannot find the card listed in the device manager (only the intel HD graphics family is listed under display adapters)... To be clear: I'm quite sure my laptop SHOULD have this card, it's just not detecting it for some reason.

Since the symptoms of my problem are exactly the same as described in the topic linked above, I have tried to follow the solution described by Arc. Installed Driver Fusion, started in in safe mode and tried to delete Nvidia drivers - but nothing seemed to be listed here. I still clicked delete but not sure if this actually did something or not.

A:BSOD driver power state / Nvidia graphics driver problems

Hello Zephos.

As per the supplied data, this is the specification of your graphics.

Code:
Name Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000
PNP Device ID PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0166&SUBSYS_21031043&REV_09\3&11583659&2&10
Adapter Type Intel(R) HD Graphics Family, Intel Corporation compatible
Adapter Description Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000
Adapter RAM (2.080.374.784) bytes

Driver Version 9.17.10.2932
So, it says it is not nVidia. But as you are saying that it was Nvidia Geforce 650M, and it disappeared, the best option is to contract the vendor. I wish you are within warranty?

Hi, and thanks in advance...

Much of this is a repeat to other threads, until the graphic driver problem at the end...

(I also have an Ubuntu partition.)

I'd left my mp3 player plugged in overnight + an Asus Xonar DAC in a usb hub, when Windows wanted to do an update and conflict over drivers ensued. Strange, because I've selected for notification before updating. Also, have not been successful installing any new updates since the end of May. Was seemingly a common problem, I checked into it, too busy/lazy to pursue and succeed. This part is confusing...?

Woke up to blasting fans and unplugged everything peripheral. First, tried setting back to restore points prior to that night - twice. Could restart in Safe Mode and with networking. Then, could restart normally - but, shutdowns after 20 minutes or so.

Got crash logs, saw driver conflicts (not found) - saved.

Came here, read threads, did restart at Last Known Good Configuration. Restart - Nvidia Geforce driver not found. Went to Asus site, downloaded and installed driver (not lastest version, but last approved version and not much later than one that was installed).

It then went into a system cycled start/restart/etc. attempting to find driver, fix itself - forced to do shutdown to stop it.

Restarted this morning in Safe Mode, followed your instructions for posting. It's been running in safe mode for about 20 minutes now.

Same error again... I was using Google Earth, and my external monitor went black (this happens when I'm out of RAM, but I have additional 4 GB paging file, and 16 GB physical RAM), I turned my laptop to sleep (usually I can fix this black screen problem by turning to sleep and back on) and back on, and it showed BSOD - SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION:

BTW I don't have those crash-causing NVIDIA drivers installed for 2 months now, all I have is Intel HD 4600 Graphics which I installed in non-traditional way (by using 'Have Disk'), because there is no other way, Toshiba doesn't provide drivers like these anymore, so I had to update using original Intel drivers (they are compatible with my processor and intel graphics version).

I just ran driver verifier, and here are 3 BSOD messages that showed up

I am receiving random BSODs with the subject line description.  My first stop was to the HP Support site to possibly update any drivers (like bios??).  I found many driver updates available, including 2 for the bios.  I really have no clue as to which driver updates to install, even after reading the details.  I looked for where it says recommended or required or something but didn't see it.  I then installed the HP Support Solutions and did a scan to determine what drivers it thought I needed and it came up with none.  Now I'm real confused.  Does that mean all the driver updates on the HP site are just optional?  Can someone provide a good site link to read about how to determine which drivers are needed?  Thank you for your help!

In essence, I have gone over at least 100 forums trying to find one that I could UNDERSTAND. I am good with computers except for one detail... the names and lingo for everything does nothing but confuse me. I can send my specs if you would like. Mainly I am trying to find the driver for the ethernet controller on a Sony Vaio VGC-RB43. I have software that can download and update all of my drivers for me... except I cannot connect to the internet because my Ethernet Controller driver isnt there... which is why I believe that Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit is telling me that their is no cord plugged in. (which there is.) I am on my Mac mini trying to figure this out and find out what driver I need to transport from here to the Vaio. Please.... any suggestions?! Remember when the lingo or names get really technical... I will be lost.

I don't know if this is beloning to "Driver" or to "software" so I will write it here.
I'm trying to install SPTD v. 1.58 or v.1.59. It says it installs allright, and that it needs to reebot the PC, but after reboot nothing has been installed. I have tried to run the installer as Admin, but same result. AFAIR sptd should show up in Devicemanager when selecting "show hidden devices" in the "non plug-and-play" array. But no. And if I run the installer again, it says that there is no earlier version to uninstall, will I like to install? But it won't work.

I have tried to shut Avast down, so no program should holding SPTD up, but no luck. Where do I look for this error?

NB: SPTD is a devise used by Daemontool, Alcohol 120% and others.

You mentioned running the install as 'Admin' but have you run it with 'Compatability' for Vista? This might solve your issue, not 100% guaranteed but it's worth a try

Hi,

Does anyone know how to uninstall the Asus Enhanced Video Driver?

My machine randomly BSODs now that I have made the mistake of installing it. I have tried the Add/Remove CP applet, a registry search for the driver, a hard drive search for the driver, and re-running the setup.exe to see if it might allow me to uninstall as well as install. No luck.

When I renamed atkosdmini.dll to atkosdmini.old under Safe Mode, my graphics totally screwed up - leaving me with 16 colours in 800x600 mode. Now that I have renamed it to .dll, my machine continues to BSOD.

I am running Windows Server 2003, Standard, but I have heard it may also happen on Windows XP SP2. I have slowed the return of the BSOD's by Disabling Hardware Acceleration, but I really don't want to continue with an NVidia card that thinks its a standard graphics card, and BSOD's definitely don't make me happy.

Any information anyone may be able to offer would be most appreciated.

Cheers

Hi all.

My computer has always had intermittent BSOD but generally it's been only 1-2 a month and after a system restart everything works fine. In the last couple of weeks I've been getting BSOD after only a few minutes of operation every time I start up and generally after these errors the computer won't boot - sometimes it will be a black screen after BIOS check, sometimes it won't even get that far - just black screen without the BIOS check even starting. Usually the only way to get it to boot again is to disconnect the power and remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard. I've run driver verifier which has indeed generated it's own minidumps but I don't really understand what these error reports are trying to tell me - if someone could take a look and point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

thanks.

Running 32-bit Home Premium SP1. A desktop tower with a wired connection

Dug this PC out of mothballs and decided to fix it. There is no network adapter in the Device Manager, There is not even a heading for it (or LAN adapter, or Ethernet adapter, or whatever else it might be called), the 2 little monitors in the notification area hace a red X on them, and when I click 'Diagnose and Repair' I get the 'This computer does bot have a network adapter installed and configured'.

So I amble over to http://support.gateway.com/us/en/emac/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=1305 and download the chipset driver. When I extract it, it indicates that the Ethernet Driver is includes as part of this, but after a reboot I've still got no adapter. So I download the LAN adapter from that same site and extract that as well. It contains the exact same stuff as is in the Ethernet folder I got from the chipset. And there IS no setup file listed.

I have checked the Wired Auto Config Service - it is started and set to Automatic. If I reun ipconfig (elevated) from a command prompt it just displays the words 'Windows IP Configurtion' and nothing else.

I'm obviously missing something. I'm guessing the internal adapter has gone bad - I see no lights at all when I plug the ethernet cable into the port. Anybody confirm or think of something I missed?

Could really do with some advise, I have looked around but I cannot find anyone that has posted about having this problem. So I bought a computer about a year ago. And now I am upgrading to a new build so my brother can have the 1st computer. But as I wanted to keep all my programs, files etc I want to just move my hard drive over. So everything has changed in the computer apart from the RAM (my brother doesn’t need 8GB). I have even changed from a AMD to Intel Processor.

Now this is where it gets interesting, the motherboard in the 1st computer is an ASUS, I bought an ASRock motherboard for the new computer, put it all together and it worked fine, all I had to do was install the new mother board drivers, but I noticed that I had only put in one 4GB RAM card, one I added the other it wouldn’t boot, turns out it was Dr debug code 45, a common problem that is a manufacture fault, so I returned it and got my money back.
So now I have bought a new motherboard, this one is an ASUS board. After Putting it all together and turning it on, it starts to load, the windows image/animation shows and just before it would usually go to the login page it takes you to the black and white screen (I forget the name) that you get on start-up, saying that windows has failed to start and I have two options: 1. run windows repair. 2. Start windows normally. Starting windows normally simply restarts the process. Running windows repair runs for about half an hour then says its finishe... Read more

With the different hardware, Windows is confused. You can try startup repair but I doubt that it will fix it. Your best option is a clean install (reformat the hard drive and reinstall everything). But, before you do that you will need to backup the user data on the drive so you can recover that after you rebuild the hard drive. Copy the user files to another hard drive or some other media. You will have to reinstall all programs after you do the clean Windows install, you can't just copy programs.

I recently started a new job and was given a new Dell Laptop. I am having seemingly randomly BSOD issues. Some days it doesn't happen at all and some days it can happen up to ten times. I've got several BSOD errors (mainly CRITICAL PROCESS DIED). I believe it's a driver

related issue. I've tried updating all my drivers and firmware to no avail.

I used the Driver Verifier and immediately got errors with sedfilter.sys and symefasi64.sys. I had to boot into safe mode to turn the verifier off. I tried the verifier without those two enabled and got DRIVER VERIFIER DETECTED VIOLATION.

Help would be greatly appreciated, this issue is a real pain!

For the past few days someone I know has been getting various bsods at random times. Whether it be sitting idle or playing a game.
I've been using teamviewer and I have been trying to figure out what the deal is for a few days now and I can't figure out what's going on here.
I've never looked into blue screens so much in my life before this and I've just about given up.
From what I've gathered, this could possibly be a bad driver since this is a Windows 10 upgrade from a Windows 8.1, but I can't figure out how to identify it.
It started happening after a blue screen while playing a game. The computer itself is a prebuilt.
The bsod checkers I've used consistently point to ntoskrnl.exe being the reason for it. But I've gotten WDFLDR.sys, hal.dll, HDAudBus.sys and such along with it. However they have not appeared since (I've been trying to fix them by updating various drivers).
We've been fine for the past 2 days, then it happened again 3 times. A fourth time recently when I tried using that Dm Log Collector (and the computer was idle for hours just fine).
Can anyone point out any suspicious drivers that I should uninstall or update? Or perhaps any other issues?

This crash was probably caused by vfilter.sys which is part of your VPN client software. I would remove it to test. BTW for future reference could you zip all the DMP files into one zip file?

System:
Windows 7, 32 bit
Video driver: Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corp.WDDM 1.1)
Driver version: 8.15.10.1749 (originally)

Background:
I was required to install the Second Life Viewer Version 2 for a school project.
Unfortunately, this program told me that my video driver was not up to date.
I tried installing the Emerald Viewer and SL Viewer 1.23, but kept getting the same message.
I therefore went to the Intel site and downloaded this driver:

Problem:
After installing this driver and rebooting, my system would crash after a few minutes.
I saw a blue screen with the folowing message: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

I therefore loaded a previous recovery point, which uninstalled Emerald Viewer, SL Viewer 1.23, as well as the new driver. My driver was restored to Version 8.15.10.1749.

Nevertheless, the problem kept persisting. I deactivated my video driver entirely. Still, in my regular user account, the system keeps crashing. When I switch to my second account, "Administrator", an account where I activated... Read more

Hi there,

A few weeks ago I suddenly got a crash with a blue screen on my Vista Home Premium 32 bit machine. It's now about 2 1/2 years old and has never had any problems of that kind.
2 weeks of permanent use (and no problems whatsoever) the same happened again.

Both times, I didn't have enough time to properly read the error messages as the pc quickly rebooted.

Now the porblem has gotten worse and no day passes where it doesn't crash at least once.

Trying to fix an internet problem I since the installed a file which may have been contaminated by a virus. But I think that is another story...

Anyway... I have tried everything I could imagine... bought register cleaning softwares (which found ober 800 errors!!!) and updated all my drivers. I ran a virus scan which seems to be stuck at 61 % and couldn't fix one of the probably contaminated files (it is a windows file?).

After I had to stop the scan at 61% I fixed all the problems that had occurred til then and now it says my pc is protected (but is it really?)

I even had uninstalled and re-installed vista service pack 2.

I have run Memtest as well as the windows memory diagnostic tools - both have NOT come across any errors.

The problem is, I have lost all faith in my computer and as it is my work computer, it is really important that I can resolve this issue and have a computer I can trust (again).

I have the minidump file attached. Funnily enough, there was only one in my minidumo folder (I assume that the othes h... Read more

Hi there

We got the crashed on machine running on Windows 10 started on last Wednesday and it's been working well for almost 1 month. After troubleshooting and restoring, we came across it's something to do with the Intel Drivers Display update that might causing this.

Once we restored the machine, the Windows Updates has already listed the driver ready to install as well all KBs. My question how do I stop/clear this list from running?

To prevent this update automatically on the driver, I went to the System > Hardware tab > Device Installation Settings > No. However this only preventing it running in the future and I need to stop appearing from the list as stated previously.

I came across previously with Windows 7 which is relating on one of particular updates that causing stuck on Windows Updates ... I know there is away to stop this action and clear up this updates cataloq. But not sure on Windows 10.

I'm appreciated your feedback and comment.

Thanks

Use Windows Update to find driver updates

In Windows Update click Custom Install in the main column, and then click Select optional hardware updates in the left-hand column.

Windows Update examines all parts of your system to determine what needs updating and it may recommend more than just driver updates. It's a good idea to visit Windows Update regularly for driver updates and other non-critical updates.

Forget the driver update software, unless you are having issues you don't need to update any drivers and if you do you should get then directly from the manufacturers website and not via a 3rd party product.

Also please do not repost the same question in multiple sections of the site as that is against forum rules.

Really, he needs to bring you the whole box. You will mess up the activation doing it that way.

A:driver updates and bios updates

If your computer is running well I would not try to fix something that isn't broke. Other than installing updates for Windows and anti-malware, newer sometimes isn't better.

Hi,

I run PC Pitstop's Scan fairly regularly. I like that they give you instructions on how to care for problems manually, even though they sell programs that can do the adjustments for you.

However, I am a little bit frustrated as they said that I need new drivers for my video card and audio card. I did a search for the drivers they listed as updated, and one did not match the Windows logo verification process (and I was warned that this could have very bad results), and neither showed up on the manufacturers' sites. It seems that the only way I can get updated drivers is to pay for PC Pitstop's Driver update program.

Anyone have any input??

A:Driver Updates

The old adage applies here, if it ain't broken don't fix it. PC Pitstop contains a registry clean which we don't endorse the use of here at BC. The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results". Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

It would be best that you use the drivers from your Laptops manufactures site. Vendor specific drivers are best.

If you have a brand name computer you can get the drivers from the manufacturer's site (Dell, Compaq, HP etc.)

If you have a generic computer you can get the drivers from the motherboard manufacturer's site (Asus, Gigabyte, Asrock etc.)

I thought I would be real smart and go through the device driver and "update driver" on all the items. But, I keep getting this error "encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device" It also said that "The system cannot find the file specified". Does this mean that I won't be able to update my device drivers?
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate with SP1 on a 64 bit system.
Thanks for any help.

How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - will help you search Google for the name of the driver

Hello
Does anyone know if it will be necessary to update drivers etc. for Windows 8.1 as it was for Win 8?
I refer specifically to my HP AIO which required quite a large update to work with Win 8.
I understand the update not upgrade will occur in Sept or Oct and the RTM date in Aug.
I ask about the drivers etc. as I did not install the preview edition and perhaps some have done so and can speak to experience..
Thank you
Peter

A:driver updates

Hello Peter,

Usually the same drivers will work fine, but it wouldn't hurt to check the device manufacturer's website to see if they may have any newer driver versions that support 8.1 as well that may work better.

How do you update your drivers on windows 7 professional 64 bit ?

Thank you

A:Driver updates

Like any other software, just go to the developer site and download the last version, if any.
With drivers it's better to be careful and not update just for the sake of it, but only when a concrete problem you're having traces back to a driver.

Anyone got an idea how often Microsoft incorporates hardware driver updates in the Windows Update, or how that works in general? I noticed that for my graphics adapter (see specs) there have 2 driver updates been released by the manufacturer since the one that Windows Update provided.

A:Driver updates?!

Microsoft doesn't incorporate hardware updates but places them in the "Optional" catagory. If you check for updates manually in the Control Panel or when going to the update site itself directly and selecting the custom option there.

The MS update site will always be behind the manufacturer's own support site until newer versions are uploaded there. Likewise 3rd party sites that carry MS updates will always lag a little behind going directly to the MS download center.

One thing to do first however before jumping on updates just because they are newer is to check to see if anyone is reporting any problems with the latest before simply rushing to download and install. Occasionally the latest may turn out to be a problem and why need to fix what isn't broken already?

Acer posts drivers on their support page. If you are uncertain of which drivers to update with, there is a link above the listed drivers that says: Need to know the hardware on your system to choose the right drivers? If you click on that it will do a scan of your unit and tell you which pieces of hardware you have so that you download the appropriate drivers.

I have a question about Microsoft driver updates. I was looking at what was available for my machine and saw the NVIDIA display update (7/28/03) and Creative update (6/26/02). They both apply to my machine. Can anyone tell me:

a: What exactly will they improve for me, and

b: Are they worth 14.3 MB of my dialup download time?

This is not life-or-death, but I'm curious because I could not find any links to more specific information on the additional functionality that they might give me.

I would appreciate any help.

A:Driver updates (MS)

The Nvidia update probably will be of no use unless you have a recent card (less than 6 mo old), it may even slow the card down. If you do have a recent card, it's almost always better to get the driver from the nvidia website rather than the microsoft signed one.

The creative update is probably worth the download as you may notice improved digital signal processing through the newer driver.

Hi all:

So I just installed Windows 10 last night. It went fine and my system is working well. No worries there. I have been reading about updating drivers to Win10 compatibility. Is there a way to tell which driver need updating (beyond going into Device Manager and clicking 'update drivers' for each piece of hardware)? I'm mostly concerned about drivers for my video card and motherboard. Unfortunately AMD seems to have a hard time creating drivers that, you know, work, and I'm on a version of my GPU drivers that I know is stable. Any advice on installing Win10 drivers people have would help. Thanks.

A:Driver updates

You need to go to your mobo's website and see if there are 10 drivers listed and also if there is a BIOS update that maybe required or needed to fix some issues with 10. Do the samething for AMD GPU.

I have an AMD HD Radeon 6790 and the latest driver version is 15.7.1....and it's expressly for windows 10.

Hey, don't even know if this is the right place to put this, but I have a Compaq Presario SR1803WM with a 3.2ghz Celeron processor. and I was wondering if there is either af website or a program that will check my drivers and make sure they are up to date for free. If the programs you've tried give you the names of the outdated drivers, you should be able to download them for free from DriverGuide or Driver Files.

I am having a problem with reboots shortly after booting up each morning. I have had warnings such as Corrupt driver and Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and then it says check your hardware etc..or disable caching. I am not familiar with drivers, updates etc.. Just a web surfer and emailer!!!! I went into my device manager video/audio card listing and it says I have a MPU-401 MIDI Device Driver 5.12535.0 and a SIS 7018 Audio Driver 5.10.06160. Am I on the right track to finding out if my driver needs updating. If I go into the Windows after each one it says these devices are working properly. Just wondering if anyone has tips of where to start. I take it in for repairs and it comes back with a different problem each time! THANKS

A:Driver updates

when we install any new hardware, it is given a irq number, which is used for interrupt request(priority) to CPU, these will be strange things for you, however try uninstall the driver and install again or update the drive from device manager in system properties(control pannel).

Doesnt really matter that much. Provided everything is working, theres no real issue ( I remeber Crysis coming out, with really really bad issues- Nvidia issued new ones to cure it), so dont worry about it. Most of the time with a new driver, the fixes are minor, and you may find a quoted increase in speed, usually 5% on a good day. So generally, if theres a problem, lok fo rnew drivers, if theres not, update if you feel like it
