Random Freezing Lenovo Y580, Possible Hard Drive errors

Q: Random Freezing Lenovo Y580, Possible Hard Drive errors

Recently my computer has been occasionally freezing while I've been browsing online. It doesn't actually get to the point of BSOD but programs will stop working and I eventually won't be able to close or open anything, including task manager.

I tried running CHKDSK to see if that could fix things, (it has crashed since then unfortuantely), doing so somehow filled up my hard drive. I went from having around 700 GB free to only having a couple hundred MBs free. I tried this two more times.

I've attached the dump log as requested as well as the three logs of the CHKDSK that I found in event viewer.

Thanks!

Hi,

I need some help with bsods on Windows 8.1 OS. I'm not sure but probably there is my fault that this happens. I have Lenovo Y580 and a few months ago I updated my bios to version 5DCN40WW(v2.07), i downloaded it from Lenovo support website (in this time i got windows 7), then i decide to run Windows 8, but this bios was purposed for Windows 7 and now i cant find 'actualization' to my old bios wich was purposeed to Windows 8, I'm looking for version 5DCN89WW of bios to this Lenovo. Now I have 2-3 bsods a day, even after format, I've updated my drivers using SlimDrivers and downloaded actual drivers from Intel website,on the Intel website I had an information that product has been detected as Kontroler Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30) but this device is unknown or unsupported (current driver:2.1.0.16) and same thing with Audio Driver for Intel Desktop Board, product detected: Sound Bluetooth (current driver: 12.0.0.2951).

I did memtest86:

And this is scr from Crystal Disk Info:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7166435/disk.jpg

And at the end there are .dmp files:

If anyone could help me I'll be very grateful and maybe there is any chance that someone who has Lenovo Y580 can copy for me newest bios and post here? Laptop was in service but they didn't fix this issue and they didn't restore my old ... Read more

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

AFAIK, you have the latest BIOS for your system.
Here's a link to it: BIOS Update for Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - IdeaPad Y480, Y580

Out of 17 memory dumps there were 7 different BSOD error codes. The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

You can get a head start on the hardware diagnostics if you'd like - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).

Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your sys... Read more

Hard drive #1:
Just a few weeks ago my hard drive started clicking and suddenly my system froze. The drive wasn't dropped, bumped, or anything like that. It was fairly new as well. I was having some issues accessing my files AND I couldn't access the internet through any browsers. I was connected, could play internet-using games, but got no reply from websites. I decided to reformat. Well, that didn't go so well. Reformatting did not fix the freezing issue nor did it fix the internet issue. I attempted to reformat the partition on C but it simply wouldn't let me.

Hard drive #2:
I pulled out a newish hard drive and formatted it, installed my applications and continued on my way. Everything was working great, until a day later when the hard drive AGAIN froze in the middle of a session and this time I couldn't even boot. I was getting a boot error that mentioned not receiving a boot file name. I went into the windows repair console and did a chkdsk which turned up a few errors (and attempted to recover them I assume). I could now boot, but random freezing would still take place now and then and EVERY DAY I have to access the repair console due to boot errors. Almost every other attempt to boot resul... Read more

Try installing another operating system onto the disk and seeing if that crashes as well. If it doesn't you probably have a bad Windows cd. I suggest trying Kubuntu, a version of Linux meant to look somewhat like Windows (You can click here to skip directly to the download page). Just remember to actually install the thing. Most Linux operating systems can be ran directly from the cd without any need to be installed onto a hard disk. There's usually a program on the desktop that will install the system for you. If it runs properly for a week or two, get a new Windows disk. If it crashes just as much as Windows did, get a new computer.

Also, how much RAM does your computer have? If it's very low (256-512 megs or less) it can sometimes cause these kinds of crashes too.

RAM is good for sure. It has been tested and also is an RMA return from Kingston.
Power supply is good.
The BSODs don't seem to be a driver issue, as they often refer to many different things and also the OS kernel, and happen quite randomly.

I have also noticed very subtle weird things like EXEs being "corrupt", cds that I've burned missing certain files, etc.

I suspected the hard drive and did a complete error-checking, yet I still get many BSODs (about once every few hours and the frequency seems to be increasing). Its almost unusable. The hard drive SMART detection doesnt show anything abnormal about the hard drive.

I want to know how I can narrow it down without swapping in a new hard drive. I have a feeling some path on the motherbaord is no good. But motherboard issues are worth dealing with just throw it away and get a new one heh.

Of course, it could be the sound card this whole time. It is a Creative... so... heh
I guess I will try to run on onbaord sound tonight and see if I get any BSODs.

Any help appreciated,
Thanks.

A:random BSOD errors. I know its either mobo or hard drive - how can I narrow it down?

but the weird corrupt files and suich wouldn't be explain by BSODs occurring from a sound card driver issue (at least I don't think), which is why I have narrowed it down to hard drive or motherboard.

I will try running in safe mode tonight, yet still that won't help me figure out between a motherboard and hard drive problem.

Hello, As stated in the title, I have a Lenovo IdeaPad y580. I purchased it approximately three-and-a-half years ago, and only now is it really beginning to chug durings its processes. Point is, I want it to last perhaps another half year or so while I finish saving up for another computer. As a gamer, I'm fine with the limitations of the GPU, but sometimes my laptop legitimately has issues processing stuff, such as loading Google Chrome properly. I know enough about Windows to clean out viral matter and uninstall programs that I don't use that are running in the back. But does anyone have any tips or tricks to make this hunk of junk last maybe six more months before it becomes unusable?TL;DR I need to make my laptop run at least a reasonably sub-average to average level for six more months. Any tips are appreciated.

Hello, I recently upgraded my home internet to a 5GHz dual band connection which I came to learn could not be utilized by my Lenovo Y580s wifi adapater : Intel Centrino 2200N. In order to utilize my new internet, I purchased a USB dual band a/c dongle at BestBuy for $30, the only drawback being a small piece constantly plugged in / using one of my USB ports (not a big deal). I was able to connect with this device at 5ghz and for the past few months everything was fine and I received blazing fast internet using this USB as my wifi. Recently I noticed I I've been losing connection speed and internet. My transfer rate jumps from 6MBs to 433 MBs as and everywhere in between while connected at 5ghz, and figured my usb dongle might be faulty. I unplugged the device to test it, and connected using the computer's normal wifi over the 2.4Ghz channel. To my surprise, while the signal was strong, my internet speeds were also jumping between 1mbs and 60mbs, essentially the same thing that was happening while using the 5ghz USB. In an effort to trouble shoot on my own, I did the following:- Did a full mallware / virus check ( was clean )- I live in a Condo so I installed INSIDDER software to check my wifi channels: no real problems there- Connected several other devices using both the 2.4 and 5ghz connection, including laptops and Iphones/Ipads. All were fine so I know it's not my router- Called the internet cable company to see if they might be thr... Read more

Hi! At the start I'll mention that I am an "IT guy" (actually IT student)  so I have some higher than basic knowledge about the stuff going on with my computers but now even I am lost... I will start from the very beggining of my troubles - that might be a long story!

So, one day (quite a bit ago) I was playing League of Legends with friends like I did for over a year after purchasing my Y580 and the in-game "bug splat" error occured. It is not something unusual, it happens to people a lot in this particular game so I was like "meh, again they f*** up something with the patch". Then the system notification told me that "driver stopped working but has recovered" or something like that, which was a first time for me. I googled the problem but before I could read anything the screen froze and I had a first BSOD since installing Windows 8 (and I have it for a year straight now). It was IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL pointing at nvlddmkm.sys, part of Nvidia drivers.

I started doing obvious things - ran Windows in safe mode, everything was working fine. Then I removed Nvidia drivers completely, including registry entries and stuff. System loded in normal mode and was working - previously the blue screen was appearing before my Windows 8 login page even loaded. I managed to play games on Intel HD GPU and do my usuall stuff without any problems - as expected to be honest.

I did a memtest back then, also did it few days ago for 6+ hours wi... Read more

A:BSOD with both GPUs on Lenovo Y580

Hi David

Since you are familiar with computers, i will cut the crap and go directly to the troubleshooting. Please follow the below steps.

1. First uninstall both "Intel" and "Nvidia" drivers completely from the system. Laptops require tweaked drivers  specifically created for them rather than generic ones. If the Nividia adapter is disabled via BIOS, please enable it.

2. Then uninstall "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" driver and "Intel Wireless LAN driver" completely. Current versions are not compatible with "Win 8.1".

I currently have a Lenovo Y580 Laptop computer with a dvd burner optical drive. I am wanting a blu ray burner where I can watch iblu-ray movies, and occasionally burn files to a Blu ray disk. I have found this drive, but I'm not sure whether it is compatible. It appears there are several different sizes for optical drives. Any idea whether this will physically fit in my laptop? Thanks for your assistance.

A:Blu Ray Burner for Lenovo Y580 Laptop

Unless it is designed for that machine, and it states that it will work, I doubt very much that you can use it. Laptops, in particular, are very proprietary in hardware, and though some few standard pieces may be interchangeable, for the most part, even the connections for optical drives are often the company's own. You'll need to get a drive from the manufacturer or one that they say will work. (Or advice from someone who has actually gotten one to fit.)

Alternatively, you could look into an external case with a USB connection for a BluRay drive. Since most people rarely use them, except for data storage (double-sided ones can hold 50 GB's which makes a great storage medium) or videos, and they are expensive, it may be best to buy just one that can be used on all machines and keep for future ones. I have found no problems with speed playing BluRay over a USB 2.0 connection (In the worst case, the contents could be copied to your hard drive before playing, anyway, though I have never had to do that). And, of course, since a drive that supports all optical media for both reading and burning is only slightly more expensive than those that support fewer types, it is worth the money to get a good drive. Just another idea...............

I saw a lot about could not find recovery environment and win 8.1 but I think i have another problem. My charger is not working properly sometimes it chargers sometimes not ( and i have to unplug and plug back the cable into the acumulator) and because of this, when I tried to open my laptop it's shuting down after 1 sec. This brutal shuting down happened for 5 times I guess and  since then every time I boot it says "scanning and repairing drive (\\?\volume(f030c5da-d83f-45ed-". So when I realized that something bad happened I tried to return my win 8.1 to factory but when i got to settings/ change pc settings/ update and recovery / recovery / REmove everyting and reinstall Windows it got this beautifull message "could not find recovery environment " What can i do to get things to normal ( to make windows recovery working again). I m not interested in my data I can erase everything PS: Please don't say it's because I change something at partitions ( I lost onekey recovery when I change something at partition but reinstaling windows to factory was still working until this charger problems)??

Alright, so early I tried to overclock my Nvidia GTX 660m Card, and it worked. the base clock speed is 835mhz, and the memory is 2500mhz. I OC'd the clock speed to 970mhz, and the memory to 3000mhz. It all worked fine, and boosted my gaming framerate quite a bit in PlanetSide 2 and Skyrim. ( I used NvidiaInspector to overclock, btw.) I went back to the overclocking interface, and accidentally set the memory rate to around +1300mhz. I then, without realizing, clicked on set OC settings, and it crashed my card. It rebooted, but now whenever I go into Nvidia Inspector to check my clock/mem speed, they're both set on 405mhz while idle or if there's a high load on my card. It's been stuck like this for a few hours, and I've tried several tweaks to fix it, including a reboot, rolling back the drivers, and then reinstalling the drivers, etc., with no resolve. I really need some help, as this is affecting my gaming horribly, and I'm getting terrible framerates. Please give suggestions/fixes as quickly as possible!

Thanks,

I've been using this laptop for around a year or so now, and it's worked perfectly up until this point in time.  The issue that I'm currently having is entirely mechanical. At the moment, my keyboard is intact and works just fine. However, if I press a key, (mainly the 'e' key) off-center, it pops the entire key up and I have to click it into place. It's not life-threatening or crucial to the machine's function, but when I am busy typing papers or lesson plans, having a key on the most constantly used vowel key continually pop up really puts a dampener in things. I've taken the key out and have tried to click it back in. While I can't see what's going on (given that there's a key in the way!), I can most certainly feel it clicking into place twice, both clicks stemming from the right side of the 'e' key. It seems that, to the best of my knowledge, only two out of four prongs that are meant to keep the key in place and in line are actually snapping and holding the key down. Whenever I type off-center and to the right, the entire left side of the key snaps up and must be pushed back into place. I'm wondering if there's anything I can or should do. Given that I've had my machine for over a year now, I'm unsure if my warranty still covers it (speaking of, is there a way to check warranty status online?). Please, if anyone has any advice on how to fix or replace a busted key/keyboard, please, let me know!

A replacement keyboard (chicony, oki, or dafon are the makers - be sure to look for the manufacturer label and p/n right below the lenovo p/n on the back to get a genuine keyboard) would make a good spares, they are about $30 on ebay. I replaced a broken key on a few different laptops but much prefer to swap out the entire keyboard.  Once a single key goes bad it's likely that more keys will start to fail (note that 'e' is perhaps the most commonly used key on your keyboard because it's the most popular vowel.  Other popular keys like 't' might be failing sometime soon).  So I would suggest you buy a spare keyboard and save it until you can't live without it, the procedure to replace the keyboard is a 10 minute swap. If you want to replace a key, a sharp tipped (xacto-style) knife blade, and a loupe (magnifying lens) are important accessories.  Buy from a reputable site which has good instructions ( http://www.laptopkey.com/ ).  Unfortunately, the key and hinge are manufacturer-specific (OKI, Chicony, Dafon, see above) so you will need to determine it from the guide on www.laptopkey.com.  When I fixed our Acer c720 I also used needlenose pliers to bend a metal tab back into place, the key hinge wasn't seating correctly because the metal tab had bent and was open too wide.  The Acer c720 has a nightmare keyboard to replace with 75 different locking plastic tabs that bind it to the undersize of the palmrest, so i had little choi... Hi all;
Need to ask how to hid all the partitions in the factory installed HDD for Lenovo Y580.

This is the scenario.
Firstly, i successfully migrated all of the following partitions:
OEM/Hidden partition,
C partition: boot drive/ program files and data drive &
D partition: containing drivers

from my Lenovo factory installed HDD to the SSD and to use the SSD as the primary boot drive . Now, i plan to use the factory installed HDD as my data drive. (I am using a caddy tray for this whereby i plan to swap out the optical drive and pluck in the Lenovo factory installed HDD). However, for "safety reasons" i do not plan to re-format the entire factory installed HDD but rather to keep those partitions just in case if my SSD fails.

Hence, how do i turn all the three partitions above (in the Lenovo factory installed HDD) to become dormant? I want the computer to boot up from the existing SSD but then to treat the factory installed HDD as the data drive and not to read from any of the three partitions in the factory installed HDD.

ANy ideas on how to accomplish this? By the way, i am planning to use EASUS as my disk partition freeware.

A:Hiding partitions in Factory installed HDD (Lenovo Y580)

You will need to delete all partitions, or you will have boot up problems.

I've searched all over from http://www.eightforums.com to lenovo forums. I've called support and they demand a fee to provide me support for my brand new laptop. I'm desperate for a solution because I have exhausted all more likely resources for solutions to my problem. My problem is that the option to burn factory reinstall discs have been removed. In the windows 7 version of this laptop, One Key Recovery provided this option. For win 7 laptops, this allowed people to reinstall the OEM OS on their msata SSD. Now that option is not there. I've burned a system image disc set, I burned a bootable system repair disc. I created a recovery flash drive on a usb stick. Neither of these windows 8 options allowed me to recover to a new drive on the same laptop. I really really hope someone can help me. This is ridiculous.

Hello,

I'm going to post two different scenarios that happens when my computer needs a hard restart
My computer freezes completely (literally no movement on the screen or anything, it's not slow it's frozen). And an extremely loud buzzing sound comes out of my headphones or speakers. The same thing as above except without the loud buzzing noise.

I saw that this happened to someone else who had both the speakers and the headphones plugged in at the same time. However, scenario #2 just happened to me 10 minutes ago even though I only had my headphones plugged in.

I built this computer six months ago and it's the first computer I've ever built. I assume it's a driver issue but I can't really pinpoint the problem since no BSOD appears on the screen and I have no higher computer knowledge.

I'm attaching the zip file required.

Thanks,

A:Random Computer Freezing - Need to hard restart after freezing No BSOD

Wow, this sounds like the same thing that happened to a friend of mine when his hard drive was failing. Replaced the drive and the freezes went away. Even the buzzing noise.

Also you may need to look at what drivers you may have just install/updated.

Hoping you don't have any failing hardware "Motherboard, video card, etc". Those are expensive

Hi All,

I have searched extensively for this issue but haven't found any workable solutions so I'm posting.

Recently purchased a Lenovo Ideapad Y580 and performed a fresh install of Win 7 Premium 64-bit on a new SSD. Installed latest drivers for all hardware but discovered after the install that my wireless adapter wasn't able to find any wireless networks (it worked find under Windows 8 when laptop was first unboxed). My wired connection works fine though, I am able to connect up to my network without issue using a network cable. Also, I am able to connect to my home wireless network without issue using another laptop.

In addition, the adapter icon in my tray shows a red-X on it. I've found many issues through web searches that suggest driver updates or hardware disable/enable steps but neither of these approaches have worked for me. I am holding off re-installing my OS until I've tried some more simpler and less time consuming options.

Hey guys, first post on here after about a week of solid research and forehead-to-screen bashing (and a few months of increasingly more frequent issues) trying to figure out what is wrong with this computer.

Here's the specs:

? OS - Vista Home Premium SP2
? x64

? What was original installed OS on system?
-Probably sometime in 2009. Here is what the computer originally was: iBUYPOWER Gamer Gears of War 988 Desktop PC - Newegg.com (iBUYPOWER Core 2 Quad 8GB DDR3 750GB HDD Capacity Desktop PC Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit Battle Gear X3 - Newegg.com same one but has some feedback) purchased 6/2009. All of the basic hardware is original, except for the stuff listed in the Other Info section below.

? Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)?
-pre-installed in the computer IIRC

? Age of system (hardware)
-2009?

? Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS?
-2009? No reinstall if memory serves me right

? CPU
-Core 2 Quad Q8300

? Video Card

I'm at the end of everything I can possibly do to troubleshoot this.

1. I've tested the memory multiple times, passed.
2. Tested the hard drive multiple times, passed.
3. Tested voltage on PSU, everything good.
4. Inspected motherboard for physical damage.
5. Wiped entire drive clean with DoD standard and fresh OS install
6. Stress tested CPU*

* I did get errors from the CPU test so I went back to stock settings from my OC. I tested the CPU again and it ran a few cycles with no errors but when I woke up, my PC had crashed with some kind of error saying that Windows could not read from the hard drive?

SMART scan shows drive at 55% health.

What I can't figure out is the wide range of problems this computer has had. At first, it might freeze up only sometimes during graphic intensive operations, but everything ran very slowly. I tried clearing out caches and the recycle bin, doing some registry and program maintenance, scanning for viruses, and defragging my hard drive. That seemed to only make the problem worse as then opening drives and folders in explorer would make for long delays and sort of mini freezes. Eventually after one crash, windows lost the boot record, which was irreparable. I had to reinstall windows, but the problems persisted. Soon enough, I couldn't play games anymore without the machine acting up a couple minutes into gameplay. The graphics would begin artifacting almost immediately, sometimes with a freeze that alt-tab would fix, on... Read more

Hey guys,

So, the other day I'm surfin' the web and the computer just out of no where cut's off and comes back on. It didn't lose power, it just did a hard reboot (no shutdown screen) and came back on. I didn't really think much about until later on, it did it again. So I go into safe mode and start surfin' the web and eventually got an error message from firefox (one of those report to microsoft dialogs) and I click "don't send". Instant reboot. I get back into safe mode and start playing a few video clips on a media player. After a few it gets an error message like before and then reboot.

Now it starts freezing up when I try to go into safe mode, at the screen with the big list of drivers loading. I let it start windows normally and it runs chkdsk. Finds a few "minor" errors, unfortunately I don't remember what, and fixes them. Seems to be workin' ok.

The next day, try to start up the computer and it freezes at the blue windows screen. Same game all over again, except this time it wasn't doing the hard reboot. I did get an error message in safe mode, but I went into task manager and "ended" it instead of clicking don't send. I don't know if that made a difference, but it didn't reboot. Eventually it runs chkdsk again and it finds a "minor" error, again I don't remember exactly. It had something to do with a file called magnetspecs.txt. Anyway, it apparently fixes the file and no more freezing or errors.

The only thing new... Read more

Hi !

Please post your complete system specs. See the link in my sig and don't forget the information about your power supply.

I would have said some problem with your memory since this happened after you installed new memory sticks. I read the part about memtest reporting no errors, but how many different brands and models of ram sticks do you have now ? See whether removing the 2 sticks you added solves the problem.

I would also run windiag on the memory as it'll run other tests than memtest.

Download and install sensorsview pro (fully functional 21 days trial) and see what it says about your temperatures, fan speeds and voltages. Post a screenshot of those readings here. To take a screenshot press the print screen (or prt scr) key on your keyboard then go to start => all programs => accessories => paint, click edit => paste and save as a .jpg. Attach the image to your next post using the manage attachments button from advanced mode.

Random restarts and errors on the hard drive are likely to be caused by failing memory or an overheating CPU so start with the above tests.

I would also run the manufacturer's diagnostic utility on your hard drive. To find your drive's manufacturer, go in the device manager (start => run => devmgmt.msc), expand disk drive and google with the model ID you'll see there. Burn the bootable CD with the diagnostic tool and run the long/extended test on the drive.

While you're in the device manager, click "sh... Read more

Hello Everyone,

I bought a hp computer a while back and was changing out parts till eventually all that's left of it is the hard drive.
I bought a 2 r9 280x cards in January along with a new 1050 wt power supply. Since then i have had random bsods and freezing.

I could really use some assistance here as i have done all the trouble shooting i know to do myself.

Edit: Wanted to add that when this happens i am either streaming and have my dashboard pulled up or i am watching a live stream and maybe a youtube video at the same time. Seems like it could be connected to video so figured i would add this in here. I did have it crash today while playing a game in windows mode while working were normally i would have about 6 tabs pulled up on my 3rd screen and skype on my 1st. Btw i know it says 8g of ram i have 16 but pulled a card out to see if that would be causing the problem.

Hello every one,

I've been having a long term problem that has basically plagued my computer since I've built it. Yet the issue manifests itself in different ways through out the years.

The issue is. At certain, seemingly random points, my computer screen freezes with no BSOD. Computer is still running with fans going. No error message. Sound stops. Mouse is not responsive on screen. Nothing works. Screen is frozen on the last picture. A holding down of the power button for a hard reset is the only way to recover.

Through out the years since 2011 I've changed graphics cards and RAM chips in order to try and solve this problem. I've found that the RAM had no effect on the issue, but the graphics cards perhaps did.

Back in 2011, I had constant random freezing at random intervals during the days of the week whilst basically doing any thing. An SLI set up of two Geforce 9800s. I finally discarded one of the graphics cards to only run one and that seemingly fixed most random freezing issues for some time. Though it did happen on some rare occasion that I could not explain.

How ever. In 2014 I upgraded my graphics card to a GeForce GTX 670 OC and found that issues immediately arose again. I could not activity render videos in Adobe Premiere Elements 8 whilst working on the video editing software with out a hard freeze. Basically unable to render videos in real-time whilst working on them any more.

More issues started occurring later with this same card. When watching Youtube ... Read more

Hi, something is not right overall all of a sudden where the computer freezes at night and needs to be manually shut off. I've run some tools like RougeKiller and at one point it said I might have ZeroAccess rootkit but have not been able to show I have it or fix the overall problem. I noticed my windows log had many DCOM errors with description of "The server {9BA05972-F6A8-11CF-A442-00A0C90A8F39} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout." I looked in the registry and it just labels that as ShellWindows. When I searched google that error brought me here.

Hi! Thanks for reading this post :)

I've been getting blue screen crashes for the past month or so and it seems to be getting progressively worse. The BSODs began occurring about once every couple of days, now they seem to happen about 5 times a day. They seem to occur completely randomly - they can happen upon startup to even hours working perfectly and they don't seem to be associated with any particular program that's running. Most of the time the computer will crash with a BSOD but sometimes it will freeze or slow all processes right down (eg mouse would take couple minutes to respond and move to a different place on the screen). I've had this computer for less than a year and it works great in all other aspects.

I tried figuring out what was causing the problem and I bluescreenview as well as WinDbg to pinpoint the drivers responsible. The driver causing most of the crashes is ntoskrnl.exe, others are hal.dll, fvevol.sys, HIDCLASS.SYS and Ntfs.sys. When I looked them up they were all part of the Windows Update, and yes, my Windows is completely up to date. WinDbg reported that it was a memory corruption problem but I've run a memory diagnostic test and all seems fine. I'm at a loss as to how to remedy this. I've followed the posting instructions and attached the output file. I would really appreciate any help I can get.

Two days ago, windows explorer would crash about every 15 minutes or so. Then yesterday I woke up to my computer saying "Your computer could not be automatically repaired." and I was stuck in an automatic repair loop. I did a system refresh and was able to get into the computer again. But after about 5 minutes windows explorer crashed and wouldn't reopen so I restarted. Then I got a screen that said to search "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT" so I did what that said to do to fix it, but now my computer only boots into "Checking Disk: 0%" or "Repairing Disk Errors" and neither make any progress after hours. I am able to boot in a preview mode of Ubuntu from a thumb drive but I can't access my main hard drive because windows is in hibernation. I have files on my computer that are irreplaceable such as family pictures and activation keys for different products.

If you are running =only= Ubuntu then you should be able to access any part of any drive on your machine using numerous utilities available. For example, you could copy your target drive to another destination drive with, say, "dd" then work with the copy. Google has lots of hits for such type of recovery.

I'm not familiar with the "preview mode of Ubuntu" however you for SURE can boot Ubuntu (or some lesser Linux) standalone from a thumb drive and then access your hard drive either raw or even mounted as a FAT32 or NTFS disk.

[if you are getting disk errors or memory errors I for SURE would not want to be using Windows that actually USES that disk; you want to preserve the state as it is NOW and fix from there. Maybe "memtest" would be a good place to start - available online and works standalone and will not touch your disk(s) - just does a thorough check of memory]

Hi!

I would like to say thank you in advance to anyone who's taken the time to read this post.

I've had this computer for less than a year and it works great in all other aspects (check my profile for specs).

I'm at a loss as to how to remedy this, please help me out!

I have attached the .zip file containing all the crash info. I would really appreciate if anyone would have a look at it. Let me know if you need... Read more

My wife was having problems with her computer recently. Once windows was up she would get a hard drive error and it would shut down. We started it in safe mode and ran malwarebytes on it and it cleaned up a few things, but did not resolve the problem. With a friends help we found an executable file in the temp folder named "IJJGlTIlJx.exe" who advised us to delete the file. After deleting the file it is now booting up without hard drive errors, but when attempting to navigate to facebook, twitter, hotmail, youtube and some other sites it does not load the pages correctly.

I found another topic that someone had the same .exe file on their system, but am not sure if our issue relates to theirs or not.

Hey there folks, I've skimmed the forums and didn't see much that fit the issue i'm having. I bought a Asus g750 about two weeks ago. Three days after getting it up and running my laptop will hard freeze randomly about once every 1-2 days. It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue. I've ran a stress test on both the CPU and the GPU, both seemed to fall in normal ranges. The hard freeze typically occurs when I'm not doing anything heavy. Mostly when I am just sitting around typing on skype or doing homework while listening to spotify.

It is under warranty I could send it back. However, I cannot afford to lose it before this semester is over. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As I don't have to tell you, a system that's two weeks old should not be freezing up. However, a couple or three questions:

Have you added any new software? Been surfing the Internet? Clicked on anything that pops up to say you need to "install this or uninstall that"? Been somewhere on the Internet that didn't look safe, so you backed out? And, finally, been somewhere you maybe shouldn't have? Like to get a deal on software that's just too good to be true . . . You'd be surprised how many folks fall for this one.

Have you been to the Asus site? ASUS Click on Support and it will take you to ASUS Service | North America

I went there and it seems I need to Login or Register before I can get help, so it looks like it's up to you. BT... Read more

Hello and welcome Baxter mate some more in depth specs please as that model Googles up as a laptop.
If you use this and find out what the motherboard is it would help a bit more

Using HW Info general components

DownloadHW Info and pick the right bit version - HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download - (copy andpaste this site into the search bar) If you do not need the running informationin the smaller right hand panel close it. In the left hand window click on the+ for the individual device groupings and they will open out to the variouscomponents.

Go onopening out further until you get to the device itself. click on it and it willhighlight. In the right hand window there will be a very detailed descriptionof that device as in brand, speeds model number etc etc These are very detailedand are just what is needed for searching for drivers etc.

See my picfor an example - in this I have opened out one my components and then highlighted one of the one you need andyou can see the detail.
But I want you to open Motherboard

Hello,

My Windows randomly keeps freezing up on me. I have read multiple threads on this forum but none of the solutions helped me. I've tried switching HDD's, reinstalling Windows 10. Tested my ram with Memtest for 8 hours, no issues. Tested HDD's no bad sectors found. I've used HWinfo64 to check the voltages and temperatures they seem to be fine even under full Prime95 torture tests spiking around 75 to 79 degrees Celsius under full burn.

My setup:

ASUS Maximus VII Ranger
Intel Core i5-4670k (not overclocked)
8GB DDR3 RAM - 2 x 4GB CMX8GX3M2A1333C9
ASUS DRW-24F1ST drive
1TB SAMSUNG HD103SJ
1TB SEAGATE ST1000DM003-1ER162
MSI NVIDIA Geforce GTX 970
Creative Soundblaster Z
PSU OCZ600MXSP
Watercooling Corsair H80i
LCD Fan-controller BitFenix
CoolerMaster HAFX case

I must say the options the motherboard has listed in the BIOS, are overwhelming. Tons of options and features which are all set to "auto". No idea if this contributes to the freezing. It's not something that was present before. It started happening about 4 weeks ago. Nothing has changed in my setup.
I even started thinking about the humidity in the air causing system instability so I turned on a DE-humidifier to no avail.

Thanks in advance for helping me.

Ran Lenovo diagnostics and Hard drive and SDD (with factory windows 7) both okay, but neither boot.
I am able to start up win 10 from a usb drive (very slow).  Ran repair and asked it to fix problems.  It comes back saying drive is "locked".

Hi All,
With your help I was recently able to diagnose a faulty video card on my system that was causing a blank screen crash as soon as I logged into winodws. I've replaced the videocard, and now there's another problem - the machine randomly freezes. I've noticed it happening more often when i'm using the internet. It crashed as I was browsing with google chrome. Not quite sure if that was necessary for the crash, since it's what happens mostly on this machine. I've run a memory diagnostic and that came up clean. I've completely reformatted the hard drive, reinstalled Windows 7 x64, and downloaded all the necessary Windows Updates. The problem persists! I'm attaching a BSOD report, even though I'm not sure if It'll have any information regarding the freeze.

Thanks!

Our PC has been running slower and slower. Recently we began having random popup browser windows, additionally the PC randomly pops up a "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." error. Just in the past day or two, the desktop will freeze. Sometimes you can Ctrl+Alt+Del to get it back, other times a complete hard shutdown and reboot is necessary. Every time I run my virus scan (Avira AntiVir Personal) it detects files that should not be on the system, additionally, my antispyware is detecting things every time I run it.

Well, I've been having this problem for a while, but now it's getting a bit out of hand. When I go to stand-by and get out of stand-by, it says 'Unable to read/write from drive C:' and other times (just regular surfing, playing CS, etc) the HD locks up for about 10 secs. It also does a thing I'd like to call "HD-turns-off-then-turns-back-on-again-with-a-grinding-sound".

I've tried reformatting which had some '...trying to recover' errors. And I've tried ScanDisk on thorough A LOT of times and it came up with some bad sectors on some of the scans. I've also tried Western Digital's disk drive utils. but it has some weird error now saying the IDE isnt plugged in correctly, but it is.

Specs:
Win98
40GB Western Digital HD
[ I won't say all the other specs. I don't want to intimidate other people ^_^; ]

A:Hard Drive acting weird. Unable to read/write on drive C:, and other errors

Hi trunten

A grinding sound with a hard drive and many bad sectors is not good. It sounds like your drive has bit the dust. Since it is 40 gig there is a good chance that it is still under a warranty as most hard drives come with at least a 1 year warranty and many have a three year warranty. You could recheck the drives jumpers (master/slave) and reseat the data cable but I don't think that will help. BOL

Hey guys, I've been having a very serious problem lately. I'm in the middle of working, and suddenly, my hard drive goes" click, clock....click clock, click clock. Then my mouse freezes and I have to flip the switch on my computer to turn it off. Then, when I reboot, it says "no drive found", so I wait like 3 minutes, then boot again, and all is fine about another hour. Then the same thing happens..... click clock...freeze.

Now, there are a few factors to consider. My computer did this one time in 2004 (when I left it on for 3 days straight of Maya rendering) and hasn't done it again til about a month ago. Recent things that I have done since it happened was:

1.) Increase my page file size to 3.5GB (and add the "/3GB" line to my boot.ini) (also note, my page file is on my Slave hard drive on it's own 5GB partition at the beginning of the drive. It's split up a bit (cuz of the MFT). Prior, I had my page file set to 1.5GB (and it wasn't split at all) on it's own partition on my slave. No problems.

2.) I arranged my physical arrangment in my case of drives, my Master was on top and Slave just below it. Mind you, I have 11 fans in my case, two on the rear, two on the side, two in front (blowing direct over the HDDs) one on top, two on the PSU, one on both the CPU and GPU, so my PC is well cooled. It's also very much OUT IN THE OPEN under my large desk, so nothing is blocking airflow (except maybe the desk about 5... Read more

Always a good idea to look at your service manual / maintenance manual for this information before you order parts...Go to the support tab on this site, enter in your specifics then select your computer from the list. One your support page loads, at the bottom you will find a link to documents, choose it and read up on your service manual. It has quite a bit of good information about updating or upgrading parts, including a white list of acceptable replacements and upgrade paths.Good luck.CB

Hi, new guy here... I was browsing through the web to fix this problem, found many alternatives, tried a few and still got issues...

I had an old Dell Dimension 8100 with 4 IDE devices. 2 hard drives on the primary ribbon, master/slave, both 40 gig, no problems accessing any of those. 2 cd read/write drives on the secondary ribbon, master/slave. 768 megs of RAM. BIOS = A08. Windows XP SP2 Home edition.

When I boot up, I often get errors scroll past when its hitting the BIOS prior to going to the boot devices. Sometimes it will tell me the amount of RAM has changed, but in the past few months, that has gone away. Often I don't get any errors at all. Reinstalling Windows didn't affect this.

Just recently, it tells me consistently:

Secondary hard disk drive 0 not found
Secondary hard disk drive 1 not found

When I go into Windoze, neither cd drive shows up in the Win Explorer. So I shutdown, started up with a new BIOS on a floppy, as was recommended on the Dell site, moving from A08 to the XP2 BIOS. No problems flashing the BIOS, so I shutdown/startup:

Secondary hard disk drive 1 not found

So I F2 -> setup. Both hard drives are ok, the 1st cd drive shows up ok, but the 2nd one doesn't, its set to 'AUTO'. Save, exit...

Considering its music files this might not be the case but I found this out the hard way and figured I would share it. If your hard drive is formatted in FAT 32 and any of the files you are trying to transfer to that hard drive are over 4GB you will receive a message stating there isn't enough storage space. Hi Everyone, I'm at my wits end and was hoping someone might be able to help me understand what exactly I need to do, purchase to bring my laptop back to life. Long story short, I have had this for just over 2 years, no more warranty and the hard drive I believe is going out/has gone out. It all started with a failed windows 10 upgrade, kept looping, finally I blew away I guess everything on it. Now when I am trying to re-instal windows 8.1 it tells me that it cannot because the hard disk may fail soon. I can get mostly through the windows setup but it always ends up failing. My question is, can someone help me identify what exactly needs to be replaced? I am fairly tech savy good at following directions and installing things by myself. (garbage disposals, haha). What I am not good at is trying to track down what hard drive to buy would be? I hate to bring it to best buy as its $200 just for a diagnosis and then whatever to fix it on top of that.  Can anyone offer insight and help me become enlightened? Thanks so much, L

I have a Lenovo IdeaCentre K210 desktop. My hard drive ran out of room and now will not boot. I tired using 'safe mode' to delete some old files and I did recover some extra hard drive space but it still will not boot. (The .exe file that starts the OS appears to be hidden in a special 'Lenovo created partition and I am unable to find it in safe mode.)

I hooked my hard drive to another computer (using a USB device) to recover my data files but all of my data files are missing my latest saves? I seems that Lenovo creates a special type of file or partition called 'dynamic buffer.' I can only assume that my most recent saves are located there and are placed on 'C drive' when I 'release the dynamic buffer' (of course did not happen when the hard drive became full.)

Lenovo web site has a 'recovery' program but (if I understand correctly) it reformats the hard drive and reinstalls the OS. If this is true, all my data would be losted.

My best solution would be to be able to 'boot up' from my hard drive. I tried the OS cd to repair the boot problem but apparently it does not know where the special .exe file is and nothing is fixed.

The second best solution would be to find a software program that can extract my data from my hard drive. Anyone know of one?

Pen Drive and external hard drive keep getting errors! So I select to fix the problem scandrive recommended scan and repair. But there's never anything wrong with them it reports! And it takes ages to scan it takes 10-15 minutes for 32GB pen drive. Windows 7 Pro done it in a flash! Anything I can do about it. Thank you in advance.

A:Pen Drive and external hard drive keep getting errors!

The times that I have seen these errors appear are usually when I have been careless and removed the drive by unplugging it before it was safe to do so. Like you I find the scan appears to find no errors and the drive works fine.

I now make a point of always clicking the tray icon "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" and waiting for the message to say that it is safe to remove the drive. This seems to stop the occurrence of those errors.

Hope this helps you!

I recently acquired a Dell Dimension 4500 P4 2gig system from a friend. The system had a bum hard drive (according to the IT people where she works) is why I have it now. I purchased a new WD400BB 40 gig drive and installed it. I'm trying to partition/format this primary drive but I get a boot error "Primary master hard disk error". I'm not savvy enough to really describe when this error appears during the boot. I have a start-up floppy in the drive to do Fdisk etc. but it never gets to that point to read that floppy drive unless I disable the IDE part of the BIOS. Then it starts the floppy but fails very soon because I shut down the IDE hardware.
What do I have to do to get this hard drive playing?

Thanks in advance. . . .

About six months ago I started getting messages that ScanDisk, in Windows Me, found and corrected errors on my hard drive. The drive is almost four years old and had never shown any errors on my weekly scans till six months ago and now it has them on every scan.
The drive is a Quantum Fireball P LM30.0 and makes no strange noises nor exhibits any weird behavior. I have run the HDD Health utility on it and all parameters are within limits.
Is the drive on the way out and the utility just didn't pick it up, or am I just being paranoid?
I don't know if it will make any difference, but I have enclosed the log of the latest scan.

Thanks for your thoughts...

My computer started mis behaving, I thought it was a virus, but after researching it seemed to be a hard drive error.
I right clicked on drive c: and went to properties, selected tools and clicked check now, selected both boxes (auto fix errors and scan for and fix bad sectors.
After a very long time the processed fixed hard drive errors and now the computer seems fine. Should I still run Combo fix or something else?
I am running MCafee security suite but it keeps turning real time protection off and back on, I also lost all of my restore points from system restore?
Any help I would greatly appreciate it.

Drive: Seagate 160GB PATA

A couple of weeks ago, I started getting errors on the drive; Check Disk would begin @ start-up a few times and repaired some bad sectors. All was good for the next week, until a few days ago. The drive began to lock-up and became inaccessible. In the Event Viewer, I would receive a message that an error was detected on the device, followed by another error message that states data corruption will occur. Partition Magic would produce an error stating that the partition table was corrupt.

At this point, I rebooted PC and everything was good again, but after awhile the drive began the same sequence of problems. At this point, I rebooted again and moved the data to another drive. Again, everything was working fine after reboot, but the errors would reappear. After the errors would appear, I tried using Check Disk, but it couldn't repair the volume. I used WD Diagnostic Tools and it found bad sectors on the drive. It repaired the drive, but the errors would reappear again.

At this point I reformatted the drive and started from scratch. Everything was good for one day, but errors started appearing again yesterday.WD Diagnostics now said the drive was failing the cable test. I changed the cable and everything was good for most of the day, then the errors reappeared.

Anyways, when the drive is functioning, all the software programs I have say the drive is in good shape. So it makes me wonder if something other than the drive is the problem. Anyth... Read more

I have been trying to fix a comptuer for a friend of mine. I figured out I had to do a reformat and reinstall. I tried the one on the partition. That didn't work. I ordered the disks from HP. I still got errors trying to restore. I contacted them one more time. They took be in a back way to ERASE the hard drive before trying again. That didn't work! They had me run a PC Doctor diagnostic. From the results they said that the hard drive was corrupted, and I needed to replace the hard drive.

I would like to know if anyone else has any suggestions, or things I may be able to try.

Mainly though I would like to know what could cause errors like this, so I can try to avoid them in the future.

Thank you

I have a p4 2.0 with 256 ddr that I got from one of those cheap resellers on pricewatch.

Recently it started showing BSOD's occaisionally so used Sandra for a burn in and everything tests fine then ran maxtors utility on the HD and it said it was failing. So made an image of the disk and plugged in a second HD. Started having wierd things happening like it not recognizing one or both drives & I could n't get my image reloaded so I thought I had another bad drive.

I took drives out of a couple other computers and the maxtors all make a loud click or bank every so often like its trying to access the drive but having problems. Same thing on 3 different drives and couldn't get anything to load on any. I get a BSOD when loading win2k and sometimes a i/o error status 00001000.

The original drive is still working blue screens once or twice a day. I was able to make images of the drive but I can't get anything to load on any other drives, tried about 5.

Swapped out the ram too with no luck.

Any ideas on what to do next?

thanks,

I seem to be having a lot of problems with hard drives lately. I have the <windows root>\system 32\hal.dll error. Sometimes I can insert a winxp disk and go then go to the C:> prompt and copy this file from a mem. stick. Sometimes this works fine and then sometimes it won't.

It then has a Kernal load dll type error. I hate to pitch these hard drives if they can be fixed. Is there some type of utility, 'tool' or software that addresses this issue?

Thanks!

Nothing will repair a damaged drive but you can try and scan for bad sectors which may keep the drive from storing data there. Scan the drive with a diagnostic utility from whoever makes your drive and see if it detects any issues.

I'm having problems with XP recognizing my drives. Norton AntiVirus shows my disk 2 and disk 3 backup drives, but when I view them in explorer, I cannot view disk 3, it gives me a message saying that I need to format the drive, but if I did I would lose all the files that I had on it. I was able to use the file browser built into Partition Magic, and see all my files and folders, so thankfully, all my data is not lost. For disk 2 it just says "bad". What do you guys suggest I do? If im not getting an error code and all is well, is it really ok? thx for the advice

What are you using to check your disks? I have no idea what "electric errors" are supposed to be.

Please provide more specific details, i.e. error messages word-by-word. Other than the reported errors, are you having any other problem at all with any of your drives? i.e. unexpected failure to copy/move/read/save files, random crashes, etc.?

There are No Disks

There may be a group policy in effect to "hide" critical things from users. Is he the only user? Did he buy it like this? Is it a clean install.

Hello,

I recently had my corrupted hard drive replaced, and while they reinstalled Windows 7 Professional for me, they didn't install some Lenovo drivers that I was used to (like a trackpad one that enabled two-finger scrolling).  Since I installed the Realtek Audio driver, I haven't had sound in certain applications.  The Windows startup and login sounds are fine, as is audio in Windows Media Player, but when I try to play a song in iTunes, the diamond showing the song's progress doesn't move and the play/pause/skip buttons don't work.  On Youtube, videos play fine, but there's no sound.  It's the same on other online streaming websites like CBS.

Occasionally, the sound will come back after startup and stay that way for up to a day, but it's never permanent.  At first, I thought this had something to do with reinstalling the Realtek driver.  I took my laptop to the IT guys at my college, and it seemed like they had fixed it after installing a package of Lenovo drivers, but the sound disappeared after a day or so.  Two days ago, I reinstalled the Realtek driver myself and the sound came back again for a day.  However, I tried doing it again today, with no luck.

Thanks so much in advance for your help!

Best,
Pearl

A:Audio problems after Lenovo T430 hard drive replacement

Looks like I fixed it for the time being.  Turned out to be separate problems.  To fix iTunes, I opened Quicktime preferences and under the audio tab, clicked "Select Audio Playback and Recording Devices" and selected the Realtek speakers.  The streaming video problem was possibly Chrome-exclusive.  I downloaded both Shockwave and Flash.  After installing Flash, sound worked fine on IE.  I then disabled the Shockwave plugin in Chrome, which apparently fixed the audio in Chrome.  I've seen people on the internet talking about problems following from there being multiple Flash plugin files in Chrome, but I only had one file.

A:Random floppy drive seek and hard drive light flashing

I have a fix for the floppy drive problem. Unplug it!

But er, it could easily be the AV software doing it, or possibly the Windows indexer.

To track it down you could try catching it in the act (if it's prolonged enough) by using the "Resource Monitor" found on the Performance tab of the Task Manager. Click on the "Disk" tab and wait for it to happen and see if something new shows up as doing disk IO.

Though also, disabling the AV software temporarily and see if it stops might be a first try...

Yesterday, my brother asked me to look at his computer because he couldn't connect to the internet. I took a look and realized he had viruses and the best solution would be to reformat.

I had an extra hard drive that was larger than his so I went ahead and just installed that one instead. Now, I can connect it to the internet and everything but when I do it keeps freezing.

He has an old system that my cousin built like 8 years ago. The hard drive he had was only 20 gigs and the one I just replaced it with is 250 gb. Is there some compatibility issue that I'm not getting or something? Or could there be a virus in the RAM? I thought this would be an easy deal, but its taking me all day.

Please shed some light.

A:New hard drive freezing

Take out that old 20GB out..
Install the 250GB
Go into the BIOS and see if the BIOS can see the 250GB. Most likely it can't but don't worry about it. When you install a fresh copy of Windows you need to partition that 250 into either 50GB for the OS on C and D and E you need to see how large you can make the second drive if you not then you need to have D and E partition form that 250GB.
Install Windows OS XP.

We had just got our hard drive replaced, but now I'm realizing that it is freezing up at times, especially when playing a game that the previous hard drive ran easily. The processor, or whatever loads data, decides to stop working at times. I can hear when this happens because the computer won't make the "scratching" sound it does when it loads. It has also frozen once even when the game wasn't running. The amount of RAM is the same between the new and old HD, and it is using the same OS, Vista. Some people have been saying that I need to replace the fan as well, but I've noticed that there are some places where the fan is not cooling too well. There is a metal structure on the chip board (sorry, I don't know much about hardware), that is don't remember being there and is getting quite hot to the touch. There is also the board perpendicular that the board that the metal is attached to that is a little hot as well. I should only have one anti-virus on the desktop, so there shouldn't be any conflicts there. As far as I know, all that is changed was the hard drive, so I'm trying to figure out what is the problem.

Hello everyone,

I have a month-old Samsung Series 7 laptop that has been giving me hard drive trouble as of late. Basically, I will randomly notice that the laptop's disk I/O light is solidly on, and it seems like the only things I can do on my computer from that point forward are things that don't require reading from/writing to the disk. The problem does not seem to go away on its own, and after a while even my cursor becomes unresponsive and the computer is then completely frozen. I have already run CHKDSK, which found nothing of interest, and the Windows Event Log was similarly unhelpful.

Based on what I have seen other users post, I went ahead and ran both SuperAntiSpyware and Malware Bytes, and I grabbed the uninstall list produced by HijackThis. Any help would be massively appreciated.

Hi Arcuna

Test the hard drive with Seagate SeaTools for DOS diagnostic software which runs from a bootable CD which you have to make from the downloaded ISO file. Click "Downloads" on this page: http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/

Install IMGBurn to create the CD from the SeaTools ISO file: http://www.filehippo.com/download_imgburn/

Then boot your laptop from that CD (you may have to set "CD/DVD" as the first boot device in BIOS Setup).

If the test proves that the drive is okay, please mention that if you post again concerning the same problem.
That will avoid you being advised to test the drive when you've already done so!. Thanks.

Hello,

I have a 3 yr old Samsung laptop which I thought was behaving properly. Today, Outlook froze and then as I tried to open other programs, each thing froze as well. I left it alone and things eventually sorted themselves out and the computer became functional again.

I looked in Event Viewer and I am seeing a LOT of disk warnings and errors, going all the way back to March. That's as far back as it goes, to the date when I installed Windows 10. (Laptop came with Windows 8 installed, I upgraded to 8.1 and then to 10.) This is in Hard Disk 0, which contains Drive C and several recovery drives.

The errors are mentioning ominous things such as "bad block", so the first thing I would like to do is actually see if the physical hard drive itself is failing. In looking at Settings, I see no indication that it is, it says the drive is healthy.

I've seen reference to software called CrystalDisk, but I would like to be assured of a safe download site for that, or is there other software someone here can recommend?

Thanks.

Thanks.

Hi.
The first thing you should do is run CHKDSK on your drive.
Drive Error Checking in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Then you can download and install PassMark DiskCheckup, to see the values of the SMART attributes. Let it run for a bit so the numbers can settle in.

I've used Crystal Disk Info, and it's good, but it tends to install other garbage, so you have to be cautious.... Read more

I have two hard drives (both Seagate 80 GB, coincidentally) that "crashed" in two of my friends' computers.

The first one would not boot to Windows, so she took it to a shop and the guy just replaced it without really investigating the problem. I actually had to do some data recovery for her, where he did not even try. I was able to slave the drive and get the data with no problems.

I did a scan using SeaTools and found just two errors (bad sectors, if I recall correctly). I repaired them and am now using this drive in an external case for backup storage.

The second crashed in a similar fashion, but rather than just replace the HDD, the owner decided to buy a new system.(?!?!) They hobbled along on a repair installation of XP for a few months, then went out and bought a Vista machine.

After scanning this HDD with SeaTools, MANY (100+) errors were found. I again was able fix them, filled the drive with zeroes, and now the scan comes back OK.

Here is my question: Can both of these drives be trusted? I figured the first one would be OK, as there were only two problems. I thought it would make a good backup drive. You think?

What about the second one? Should I just trash it?

Thanks,

Paul

I have the TuneUp product which states I have file system errors. When I execute their Disk Doctor utility, as suggested, it states I do, in fact, have file system errors. The utility then asks me to execute it further to find them. When I execute as stated the utility comes back in two seconds stating I DON'T have any errors. I ran it again with the same error/no error situation.

Is there another utility that can check my hard disk for errors.

Thanks to all

Hello,

I have Windows XP SP3 installed on my laptop. Recently, the following problems arose:

A) The hard disk led started to flash repeatedly and my computer froze for several minutes

B) I checked the System Events log and found several warnings regarding my hard disk partition D (error event 51 - "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging operation.")

C) During boot I get the following error message:
"Cannot determine file system of drive \??\D"

So any ideas? On the command prompt, I executed CHKNTFS /X D: and I correctly got the result that the type of the file system is NTFS. I even checked drive D for errors but that didn't return anything. Everything seems fine. I even defragmented it but that did not solve the problem.

Is my hard disk drive dying?

A:Errors regarding hard disk drive D

Unless I read this wrong chkntfs is a scheduler and will tell if there
is a problem.
It then says to fix the problem run chkdsk.

Have you tried to run chkdsk /r on d:?

So,

I have a SimpleTech 350 gb external hard drive that I store essentially every music, movie and picture file on. I tried to share it across a home network. It immediately said I did not have permission to access the drive.

After about two weeks of trying everything (restarting, restoring, attempting to open in safe mode, etc.) I finally got access to the drive, only to find that all the folder permissions had been changed. I took ownership of the drive (checking that subcontainers and files received the same.) Then I changed all the permissions to give the owner full control. When I went to open a music file, it would either tell me I didn't have access, or it would give me the usual Vista security prompt.

I manually went through each file (oh man that was a day) and checked full control on the owner permissions. The entire hierarchy of files and folders states the owner has full control.

Most will open as a single file now. But I still get access denied on external programs like itunes when I try to sync an ipod.

I have been forum scavenging since this happened, and I'm come across a few people who seemed to have similar problems with sharing drives and some weird permissions being locked on them. But no one has solutions.

Please help. I have tried everything I can think of. I'm about to throw the damn thing out.

A:Hard Drive Permission Errors

Hi doublefunk,

I'd be the last person to pretend that I know how Vista's permissions and sharing work, but I had similar problems.

What I ended up doing is:

1. Set up Network and Sharing Center as

File Sharing - On
Password Protected Sharing - Off

2. Changed ownership of the various drives/folders to Administrators (I'm assuming your user account has administrative privileges).

3. Set up identical user accounts on all machines (I have 3). Identical, in this instance, means that they have to have the same names in the C:\Users folders, not just on Welcome screen.

Been working fine since.

Hope this helps.

My new 80GB (actually 74.5GB) Seagate SATA hard drive is showing an incorrect reading somewhere. Right clicking on the drive in My Computer and clicking on properties, it says that 48.6GBs are used and 25.9GB are free. But when I go into the C:\ Drive (that hard drive) and when I select all the folders in C:\, it says that they only take up 37.8GB. I have selected all hidden files to be shown, and I definitely do not have an 11GB page file... does anyone know whats wrong? Is the hard drive defective or does it need defragging or something? I'm a real newb when it comes to hard drives so I'd appreciate if someone could shed some light on this for me

Thanks

well for one, your restore points are still hidden.
reduce the space allocated for restore points, reboot, and sleep easy --
not a significant issue here.

OK, so I copied HiJackThis to a cd from my friends computer and have tried to install it on mine (whatever is wrong with mine wont let me access the internet) but I run it and nothing happens. I am also trying to install a different virus scan since my mcafee gets shut down, but when the program goes to the install page it has a popup which says "Setup failed to launch installation engine. the RPC server is unavailable". Which then kicks me out of setup.

I have been able to run ad-aware, which I already had installed, but it found nothing. I also deleted all my temp internet files, but no change.

Anyone have any advice to install HiJackThis?

Why would it be that a hard drive has a clean SMART report and passes extended tests without error yet is still slow, and what might be done about it?

Thanks.
