Hi, my problems began with a reoccurring failure to successfully install Windows Security updates. I could manually install some, but the rest refused to install. I kind of ignored it at that point. Then I started getting a pop up in the last few days saying "This computer is not running genuine windows 7". The link the pop-up sends me to just has a page selling Windows 7 on it.

A:Not running genuine windows / Update failure Code 8000FFFF

Hello and welcome zatoichi mate the chkdsk running sounds rather suspect to me as you have to start that process - as far as I am aware.

Do a Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware scan/s

Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download

SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!

(the scans can be done in safe mode - tap F8 on power up)

if clear then try this then try this

Hi all,

Instructed to create a new thread for this error.

I am running w7 x64 ultimate.

As per the instructions Windows Update Posting Instructions here are my results

1) SURT
still running

2) sfc /scannow
No problems, nothing in log (no CSI entries)

3) Error code is 8000FFFF, additionally two errors are logged in event viewer when trying to run the update file manually (Windows6.1-KB2758857-x64.msu)

-a- Error: Windows update client
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8000ffff: Security Update for Windows (KB2758857).

-b- Error: WUSA
Windows update "Security Update for Windows (KB2758857)" could not be installed because of error 2147549183 "Catastrophic failure" (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "D:\Users\xxxxxxx\Downloads\Windows6.1-KB2758857-x64.msu" ")

4) CBS.rar attached

5) Other things tried

Apart from running various microsoft fixit utilities suggested elsewhere, I also tried to run the update with msconfig, selective startup, only windows services active, and of course failed.

A:Update fail w7 x64: KB2758857. Error code 8000FFFF

Your CBS logfiles are generating at a very high speed - and it's therefore likely that you have a huge amount of corruption.
There is no CheckSUR data in your upload - either you uploaded before it ran, or it failed before being able to generate a log.

please try again......

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply.

Hi, When I try to use Windows Update I get an error message 8000FFFF. I have looked up some solutions, one of which tells me to launch REGEDIT and then go into HKLM|\components. I realise that I am very slow here but when I use the 'SEARCH' function on Vista and type in REGEDIT it just populates an evert growing list, rather than acting as just a search for REGEDIT. The solution suggested if I could ever get to REGEDIT under Components delete PendingXmididentifier NextQueueEntryIndex and AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving. Anyone know if this is a good solution but more importantly HOW DO I ACCESS REGEDIT!!!! Sorry for being so slow, Mick

A:Windows 7 Update Error Code 8000FFFF

Hello Benjamin and welcome to Seven Forums.

My usual disclaimer: I'm not an expert at anything.
However, I recently began having problems with updates very similar to yours. I poked around and found out that a Windows Update from May 7 (KB3022345) was causing issues for a lot of people. See this previous Forum thread:

Windows 7 update (KB3022345) causing corrupt files

I uninstalled and hid the offending update and ran the Microsoft Fixit tool. It solved my problems.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

Another possibility that might help is if you have a System Restore Point from before the issues began. You could try restoring your computer to that earlier time.

System Restore

Hopefully others will jump in with additional suggestions.

I have been trying to install the latest windows 7 updates for several days and all of them (14) keep failing. The same error is received for all of them, Error 8000ffff. I researched what the updates were for and it looks like they are for Windows 7 x64, I have Windows 7 x86. Also, just before this happened I started getting an error message that my windows was not genuine. But I ran the activation and it says it is genuine (I have had Windows 7 Professional for a couple of years). I did some googling and ran into several post that suggested uninstalling KB971033 (for the windows not genuine error), so I did that and the error message no longer shows.

The windows Malicious Tool update worked just fine.

Any ideas?

A:Windows 7 Update failed error 8000ffff

Uninstalling KB971033 just hides the problem, it does NOT solve it.
Please reinstall KB971033 from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033 and then post an MGADiag report.

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/234159-windows-genuine-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Hello everyone,

recently i started having a pop up saying "your windows version is not genuine..." (text from memory)
(my windows is genuine, already installed when I bought the Asus computer)

I tried to update windows (quite a few updates to do, I could not use the computer for more than a month) thinking that it would solve the issue, but unfortunately the updates all stop with error 8000ffff.

Following the microsoft help, I tried this solution: Windows Update - erreur 8000FFFF . It was not enough to solve my problem.
Following your advice, I downloaded Microsoft Genuine advantage diagnostic tool, result is below.

I am also in the process of installing "System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)" (just taking a lot of time to finish). I will update the post with the results when (if?) it finishes and I can save the results.

I also did a scan with Avast, it came out clean.

EDIT : attached the CBS logs

Can you please help me understand the problem, and how to correct it?

Thanks,
Erwann

Days and Days of trying to repair this. This: Windows will not update. Periodic messages that my Windows is not genuine. One entire day of failed installation of clean install with Windows 7 USB stick provided by Dell. A few hours with a very sweet techie, who did the most basic stuff. I have run I think everything I could find on the internet. Nothing has worked. I've not tried the clean install in 2 days; at this point I don't want to give up on the repair, now that I've invested half my life in it. Help?!

A:Error Code 8000FFFF and Windows 7 Update

Commonly this error is caused by moving the Windows partition.

Quote:
On a computer running Microsoft Windows non-core edition, run 'slui.exe 0x2a 0x1AD' to display the error text.
Error: 0x1AD

... although I also see references to MDAC in a Google search.
The error is extremely rare, and there are no currently-known solutions, but let's do some basic checks first...

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

Also...

Open Event Viewer

click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.

Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.

Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...

Save the file as Appevt.evtx

Repeat for the System log

then zip both, and upload them.

At my wit's end. Cannot find the right answer anywhere. I had to use restore points to get Media Center TV Pack installed on SP1. It is working pretty well. Windows update had lots of problems but finally got SP2 reloaded. Now I'm looking to get Windows Live Family Safety installed, but it requires Platform Update. I read about how this fails because of issues in Update, but the "fixes" don't do any good. I've tried using the FixIt. I've tried installing standalone Update packages, related and unrelated. I've tried the manual fix that edits the registry. I haven't seen any other suggestions, besides start all over with a new install of Vista and try to do it all in sequence the right way the first time. I'm not even sure what that would be anyway and I really don't want to start all over just to get a peripheral bit of software to work. Anyone else find the "magic key" to this problem that is not sharing it out on the Internet?

I have an Acer Aspire Ethos laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. SP1 is installed according to system properties (came installed).

Windows update was working fine until maybe June or May of this year.

I have tried a number of hotfixes, several microsoft fixit (automatic normal and aggressive runs), the sfc /scannow in admin CMD mode, and also uninstalled the last ten or so updates. I have also deleted the contents of the /Downloaded Installation Files/ within C:/Windows but that also did not fix the error.

Have also tried disabling my antivirus but that did not change anything, windows update will not self-update at all.

Nothing seems to work. Please help.

Below see a typical update attempt from the log (repeats almost every other day more or less the same.

Hello and thanks in advance to whoever can help me.

A couple of days ago I was downloading some video files and since I wasn't paying attention I clicked an .exe instead of a video file. I know this makes me the idiot, but I have beaten myself up over it for a while and cannot fix this myself so I am now humbly coming forward with my idiocy to get my Toshiba Qosmio back up and health. So here's the deal:

I got the popup that I wasn't running a genuine copy of Windows 7 64 bit Pro (which I am...came from the factory). Tried to resolve it online and the only answer I got was to buy another copy of Windows, which I don't really want to do. Then I tried to run Windows Update and I get random error codes as to why I can't. I tried a system restore and got a message that there is an error on my hard drive, to run chkdsk. Tried that, nothing. Even when Windows rebooted it wouldn't let me. So then I boot towards the safe mode menu and see an option for Windows Repair, choose that and click on system restore. I pick a restore point a week or so ago and try to restore. Negative. Got a message that not only could it not restore but now that restore point was damaged (hooray). Tried rebooting to that screen and all I get is black: pointer works with touch pad but not mouse. Tried booting into safe mode and I couldn't get explorer.exe to run and had no icons. Then rebooted to Last Known Good Configuration which is where I am now.

I was trying to upgrade to windows 8 Pro on my Lenovo G580, as I got my student license from my University. There started the problem, when trying to upgrade from the DVD (burnt ISO) the upgrade immediately sends "Setup failed to initialize the startup folder" error.

So after few searches, I found on lenovo website that I need to install all important updates first. That's where I found another problem, which is my thread about. I tried so many methods until I found this forum.

Few other problems I ran through while trying to fix it alone:
Updating seems like stuck at 0KB total, 0%, and returns the same error after a while.
Can't enter safe mode from F8, it gets stuck at some CPNP file while loading. However, I can enter the safe mode by choosing Safe Boot from Msconfig and restarting the system.
Running CHKDSK from CMD [Admin] gave "F Parameter not specified, running in read-only mode", and then runs normally.
Tried to download and install updates alone, they all fail when trying to install.
One of the times where the update readiness tool was running, my pc encountered BSoD. And once when I was scanning with malwarebytes.
SFC Scannow command scan returns that no violations in integrations where found.
Note: I just ran the SURT, it said installation successful after a while of running it!

Thanks in advance,

Rahmani

My computer ran some updates overnight this week, and ever since then i've been getting a popup telling me my copy of Windows is not genuine. I bought the computer a year or two ago with Windows preinstalled and haven't made any changes to my system recently. I'm still showing that my Windows is activated in Properties, but i keep getting the popup, and running the validation link from the popup itself at microsoft.com results in it just sort of...dangling there spinning, and nothing happens. Any ideas?

I was having an issue with Windows reporting as not genuine, and found some advice online to uninstall and reinstall KB971033. I uninstalled it fine, but when trying to reinstall it, it is failing with error code 800706F7. This is a volume license Windows 7 install, installed with a valid MAK.

I'm sure the two issues are related.

From some research online I have tried to run the Windows Update Readiness Tool to no success.

Did the best I could reading the posting rules for the forum and the Update forums, but please let me know if there's anything else I need to do.

I attached a screenshot of the Update that has failed to load for months now and the error code it gave me (both are also in the post title).

I was unable to download the SURT as I didn't see the correct one for my system and I wouldn't want to download the wrong one. For this reason I attached a screenshot of my system spec.s so if I need this for you to help me, you can let me know which to download. Also following the links on the Update posting rules took me to this link: I'm fairly certain my system is x32 based (could be wrong) which I don't see as an option.
System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008

Also, I'm not sure it helps but I saw that someone had, had the same Update fail but with different error code. I doubt it helps but just in case here's a link to his thread:
KB2742599 won't install

I did not follow those directions, I just thought I'd mention that it had been on here before.

This has been a problem for a long time now that I've been ignoring and when I got annoyed with it I found this site. I followed all steps in the Update posting guide (except the aforementioned 1st) but let me know if there's any other information needed. Hopefully someone can help me out, thanks so much in advance!

Odd - your SFC scan doesn't appear to have complete properly, either, although it does seem to have fixed one minor file error.

I have a suspicion I know what may be the problem - this may help isolate the cause....

I've been looking for a solution to this for ages to no avail.

One thread on these forums looked promising but then just ended with 'I restarted and it worked.'

Well, here's the deal. I have Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit running on my PC and it is fully activated.

When I go into Windows Update and click 'Check for updates' it says 'Checking for updates' and roughly 5 seconds later it says 'Windows could not search for new updates' with error 8000FFFF.

I tried installing the WindowsUpdateAgent-x86.exe but it fails to install, giving the exact same error code (says 'Install failed with following error number: 0x8000ffff')!

So far I've tried manually installing the updates, running WindowsUpdateDiagnostic, running Tweaking.com Windows Repair (All in One), Microsoft FixIt. None of these have helped and am a loss.

I've included the CBS files as well as the SFCFix.txt to this post. Any suggestions on what to do next? Let me know if you need more info...

Thanks!

Wanted to report to the world that I was getting this failure during automatic updates for Windows XP Home edition.

After a day of trying to follow the Microsoft suggestions, I finally tried to execute the individual updates manually. When doing so, I had an error copying the file c:\.....\branches.inf.

I found a post on this site by MOXYLL (http://www.techsupportforum.com/show...t=branches.inf) in which she suggested changing the following file to read/write from read only:
c:\windows\inf\branches.inf.

Guess what?!?! It worked!! All my Windows Update failures went away.

Now if I could somehow reclaim my day! ... ARGH!

Hope this helps some frantic frustrated person out there!

Best,
Dan

I had already installed, successfully I might add, a Definitions update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB3115321). The Update already installed and now it keeps coming up with the same error unable to install update:
Definition Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB3115321) 32-Bit Edition - Error 0x80070643
I tried uninstalling the installed update and Windows won't do it returning an "Unspecified error" response. I have Windows 10 Home (32bit) installed and I cannot find a way to get Update, as you used to be able do, to HIDE the offending update. (THANKS Microsoft for removing functionality from Windows YET AGAIN).
I'm at my wits end with this. . I have asked about this problem before directly reporting the issue to Microsoft (Surprise surprise... NO RESPONSE. I'd get a better response from a brick wall). Seriously not happy; considering cutting my losses and reverting (AS I STILL HAVE MY INSTALL DISCS) to Windows 7 or moving to Linux. Way to go to p**s off users!

Forums/MS suggest removing three registry enties from Hkey_Local _Machine as follows:

None of these are in the registry.
Where do I go from here (apart from bonkers mad!)

Alright, I think I got it. I hope this helps. This is from the MS technet forums:

Hi guys, seems like a recurring problem here. The fault is registry based and there's a simple solution to this one, it works for both 32 & 64 bit OSs. When you have tried to install this update restart and you'll be confronted with WU (Windows Update) saying an installation failed and it will allow you to a) try again or b) install - do neither! First click your start menu and look to see if the red shut down button has a ! on a shield - this means "shutdown & install" updates. if it doesn't show this click option a or b above until it does. Go to "Programs & Features" and click "View Installed Updates" (top left of dialogue box) - you then get a long list of KB?????? files, scroll down until you come accross the KB929777 update (i know! it must be installed if it's in the list! this is where the probl... As some of you may recall, I have two different strings in this forum on the subject of Vista SP2 refusing to install, and as of this moment I never did get it to install in my laptop running on 32-bit Vista Home Premium. Finally, after four days of phone calls with MS Tech Support, who I am convinced were only guessing, they finally cleaned off the entire hard drive, then did a "clean install" of Vista (with no service pack). Vista still didn't work right, and finally after calling the laptop manufacturer (Dell) they got it done to where at least it functioned properly.

Now then, the latest problem is that after Dell fixed Vista and I downloaded 98 updates and such to my new Vista installation, THE PROBLEMS CONTINUE. Only 97 of the 98 updates installed. The one that did not was "Update For Windows Vista (KB9299777), a "recommended" update dates way back in 1/29/2007, and for that I have repeatedly gotten a "Code 8000FFFF Windows encountered an unknown error."

What does this error mean, and is this update really necessary? After 2 or 3 tries it remains UNinstalled, but is there really any great need for it? If so, how do I install it. After all this ongoing trouble installing Vista SP2, I am now back to Vista with NO service packs and I am going to leave it that way, simply due to all of the trouble they have put me through. Hi,

I'm using Win 7 x64 and I've got a problem with KB2937610 and KB2972211 for a long time now.
Neither of them installs. Errorcode returned is 800B0100.
I tried a bit everything I normally do like installing the update directly from the knowledgebase but nothing seems to bite.
It looks like you have been succesful solving this for others so I hope you can help me.

Attached the CBS log folder. I had to remove some .cab files or it would have been to large but all log files are there.
Attachment 340490

I also run SFC /SCANNOW but that came up clean (no integrity violations).

Thank you in advance for your help

I think most of the file problems are related to a single update, so I'll try and post a fix some time tomorrow.

I'm encountering some update issues as well as receiving a message that my Windows install is not valid. Looking at my update history, it appears as though updates have been failing since September 9th. I'm hoping the MGADiag report below will provide some useful info for the guru's on this forum. I have installed Windows 8.1 Update 1 Pro Version a few weeks back on my desktop computer running 64 bit version of the OS. The OS was running perfectly fine until today when it started showing activation error. This is not right since I had installed Windows 8.1 Update 1 with a legit key since I have an MSDN subscription
As you can see in below pic. It says that you can activate the Windows Machine now

Now I went ahead and tried to activate the windows by the key which I had intially activated and also with a new fresh different key which I haven't any activated windows machine yet. Both the steps didn't yield any fruitful results
Please find below snapshot that show how weird my machine behaves.
1) When I hit "Activate" button

2) When I click "Error Details"

3) When I click "See Support info online" - Nothing happens
I have tried below troubleshooting steps but nothing happened yet

Good evening all,

Just to flag that this has also been posted in W7 Support sub-forum here:

Other thread

Re. the instruction thread - the link to DSS doesn't seem to work, and GMER is for 32-bit only. If there's anything I can do to kick things off, please let me know and I'll do it!

I've googled extensively around the issues I am facing, and tried all proposed solutions, but none have worked thus far.

Symptoms:I have 1-2 minutes of freedom after booting, then I can no longer run new programmes. I also cannot close some programmes e.g. Skype. Tabs in Chrome spazz, flash player dies, and any new navigation ends up with an eternal hanging/loading problem.
Unable to restart/shutdown conventionally (I have to do it physically)
I get the error "Failure to display security and shut down options ..." when I try ALT+CTRL+DEL

Safe mode is absolutely fine, so I assume it's not anything hardware related (though please correct me if I'm being naive). My second drive which runs off XP, which I only use for storage now, boots fine and has no problems.

I have not installed any new drivers, programmes, or otherwise made any meaningful changes recently.

Solutions I've tried:Reset winsock.
Shut off all start-up programmes using MSCONFIG.
Run virus scan at boot-up, deleted 2 items (win32 installmate ... prob trojans? Was an .exe that I had downloaded but never ran).
Run Malwarebytes scan, deleted 1 fairly innocuous item.
Run full scan-disk check.
Run a SFC scan... Read more

Hi,

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Used since Win7 came out with no genuinity issues until now.

A short while after the SP1 update I started getting popups claiming my Windows is not genuine. I know for a fact that my Windows is genuine.

Properties show my Windows is activated. I have activated both online and by phone yet the popup still keeps appearing. The MGA diagnostics show that there is a tampered file and apparently it is causing the validation to flag my system as not genuine:

Code:

HealthStatus Bitmask Output:
Tampered File: %systemroot%\system32\slcext.dll|slcext.dll.mui
I have tried to fix this for a while now. The file seems to be associated with MUI packages and Something called Vistalizator.

I have checked the registry and there are no MUI's. US-EN only. I do not have anything called Vistalizator.

I am rather frustrated with googling in microsoft pages as they all lead to the Vistalizator and MUI packs but I don't have them so the fix does not apply.

Thanks.

Hi,

After reading a few posts about this issue and trying to fix it, it seems it hasn't resolved.

I have read a lot of NoelDP's comments, so would love one of your 'easy fix' replies rather than the one or two 'reinstall!' replies.

I loaded up my computer yesterday and it showed me barebones non-Aero desktop with none of my icons, etc. The sound was not working. Failed to connect to windows service errors were showing in the taskbar.

I restarted and it seemed to work fine.

After a while my a message in the taskbar told me my windows was not genuine.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I have started my computer up again this morning and it's showing from the start that it's not genuine.

I have entered my Key in to SLUI.exe 4, and it seems to have activated for now. The results below are from AFTER this activation and that means the computer is looking quite fine right now. I will restart and post another MGADiag if it comes up as not genuine again.

Anyway, I think this is what you need. The MGADiag.exe results:

A:Virus, Windows update, user profile and now Genuine Windows problem

If it gives you a access denied message while trying to activate windows; you may very well need to change the permissions for your user name in order for you to have access to it as windows 7 has quirks about having access to certain items even if your user name is a administrator. As for the non genuine windows thing; I strongly advise you in the future to never go to a non genuine site for any free browser. Always type the url directly into the address bar of the browser you use as that way you will encounter less issues. To get rid of the non genuine opera copy. I would download and install revo uninstaller from the link below and that should help to get rid of any registry entries in windows as well as the program folder:

http://www.revouninstaller.com/downl...e-portable.php

download, install, and run the uninstaller from the above link then do a google search for opera browser. Thats your best bet at this point.

Hi,

I am a tech idiot and I need help. I appreciate anything anyone can do.

For several months I have been getting messages that our windows may not be genuine. It came installed on our Dell and we bought directly from Dell so I basically ignored it. Recently we got a message that it is not genuine in the bottom right corner of the screen and windows things on the screen started to look clumsy and not run right.

I tried many times to follow the validation processes to fix this but it would never complete. I had my stepson try to fix it and he is a computer pro. He tried remotely and came back saying that the windows version itself was apparently too corrupt and I needed to reinstall it from the original disk - which seems to have got lost in a move. Ugghhh. Oh yeah, several times in my efforts I was told to run chkdsk - did so and it identified different issues, seemed to fix them but made no difference in my ability to fix the validation issue.

So, I bit the bullet and went out to BestBuy and got a Windows 7 Builders Pack. I tried to update windows several times using it - no go. It got to the same point every time and quit. It basically said there was a file that was not correct and install could not be completed. So, I decided to back up and do a full install. Same result. I am at my wit's end. I ran the diagnostic below. Before I try more dramatic moves like hard drive replacement - or new computer, I thought I would give it a last go here.

Any help appreciated.... Read more

If you used that license it should say OEM System Builder, but yours says OEM SLP which means System Locked Pre-Installation. Are you sure you`re trying the right key from BestBuy ?

The Windows as purchased from Micro Center was an OEM system builder pack.

Since the end of March a window has popped up saying that windows is not genuine. I have had Windows 7 Home Professional x64 since I bought this computer, so it is genuine. I have run Malwarebytes Super Anti Spyware, and I have AVAST. Windows also will not update no matter what I do. System restores will not work either. I have tried to install several Window updates that are supposed to fix these issues but they will not install. The SURT did run and install. When I try with other programs it says error: 800706F7

A:Windows 7 update fails and Windows not genuine message is appearing

That's a new set of errors to me!

Let's start with the basics....

You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply
Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

Try System Restore to before the problem began. This might force Updates to install correctly this time.

If not work through these steps:
Windows Update - Reset - Windows 7 Forums
System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008

If these don't help check the System File integrity: SFC /SCANNOW Command

Hello! First post on here, and I have seen several posts that are similar to my problem but not one exactly.

I recently installed some Windows Updates, after a reboot and Windows Configured after the updates, I log in to a Black Desktop, with nothing on it, no start button or anything with
"Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine" In the right hand corner.

I purchased this copy legitimately almost 3 years ago and have done one major upgrade (2 years ago now).

I can't get to a prompt to run an MSDiagnostics.
(I have not had the time to try and boot into Safe mode or anything to see if I can get a prompt there).

After reading a similar thread, I am thinking it may be a damaged file as it froze during one of the updates and I had to perform a hard reboot.

Thanks so much!

When I left my laptop alone for a while it suddenly started updating tot windows 10. I did not start this update. An hour later when the update should have finished it stopt because of a problem that couldn't be solved so my laptop started to 'backtrack' I guess. the message displayed on the screen "restore to previous operating system" something of that sort. But then this failed as well. Now when I try to start or restart the computer I end up on the light blue screen of the recovery Manager. Leaving me with a few options:to use a disk to install windows 10to restore the original factory settings of the computerto only restore the operating system, drives and a selected software For all of these 3 things I should make a backup, because with some of these options I will lose everything, which is not the best timing because my exams start next week. So I tried the automatic and manually selected backup and both of these failed as well. giving me the errorcode: FFFFFF0C. Is it still possible to restore to window 8.1 or windows 10 I don't care but where I keep all my files and documents? All of my schoolwork is stored there and I don't have an external backup. Thanks for the help..

A:Update to Windows 10 failed and recovery to Windows 8.1 fail...

jensvr Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you can thank Microsoft and their obsessions with forcing Win10 on everyone for the predicament you are in. While Microsoft tells you that there is no risk in the Win10 Upgrade, because they let you believe that you can always revert back to your original OS and setup within 30 days, the ugly fact of the matter is that the Win10 GoBack function has proven to be unreliable -- and when it fails, it can leave machines in a corrupted state -- which doesn't always happen, but it does happen often enough to be a problem and you won't get any warning in advance that it is going to trash your PC!The Win10 Upgrade is know, in some cases, to corrupt the Recovery partition stored there by the OEM that built the original machine.  This pretty much guarantees that no HP Recovery is going to work. Are you still able to boot into a working OS with a desktop?  IF so, instead of relying on an internal backup function, which tends to be unreliable, my suggestion would be to use a third-party product known as Macrium Reflect. Macrium Reflect (MR) provides a FREE version that can be used to image and restore partitions or entire drives. What I recommend is the following:1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR)2) Run MR and choose the option: "Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows" to write a full backup to an external drive or USB stick3) Use the option to create a boot USB stick ... Hi all,

I got a BSOD during a windows update (I think it was something related to .net 4).
Since then when I start windows it gets to the loading bar with windows logo over it but then I get a black screen, same thing for safe mode. I have tried to repair with a win 7 installation disk but it fails, I tried to do a systeme restore after that but it failed too.

I have access to an old working partition (which I cloned onto my SSD a couple month ago)

What are my other option ?

It's been a while I've been having this issue but since I couldn't find a solution to it I decided to create an account and plead for some help.

I'm currently using a Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 Bits.

A lot of odd things happened to my computer these last months, as I realized that it was starting to get much more slower than usual (opening applications, etc), and then it started giving me a lot of blue screens, making me lose a lot of work etc. When I went to check it, I saw that my Windows Update had stopped working and ever since then my computer became terribly slower, especially when it comes to turning on and off. It goes on a very prolonged loop of updates, shuts off, turns on, get on the updates loop again and finally lets me login. This takes about 15-20 minutes, a lot more compared to before. Of course, it doesn't update a thing. This happens everytime now. Sometimes it simply shuts off and starts beeping and doesn't let me turn it on again. This really terrifies me.

Anyway, recently a file named 'wermgr.exe' has been bugging me by using an odd amount of processing power. It's really bugging me, since my Norton Antivirus is sending me notifications about it every single time. It's very unusual and never happened before.

Last but not least, I've been installing a game but everytime I close it it's like I never installed before, and I have to do it all over again. Not sure if it's related to all the t... Read more

Hello,

I restarted my windows 7 Compaq NX 7400 laptop yesterday after an automatic windows update and since that time I have been unable to reboot my laptop. I have tried all recovery/repair options on the windows installation disc but to date now have worked.

The message shown is "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause". I having exhausted all the repair options and now worked, I opted to to do another installation on the same partition;after all files were copied and the machine rebooted I ran into the same problem; only this time the error was "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: File: \windows\system32\winload.exe status: 0xc000000f"

I need some urgent help please.

A:Windows 7 fail to boot after windows update

I am unclear as to whether safe mode will boot right now.
Have you tried that?
It sounds like you have a corrupt windows file (possibly an indication of a failing hard drive) normally I would just start safe mode with command prompt and run
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

I'm unclear if you are able to do that at the moment though.

I'm thinking I'll have to go with failing hard drive if this has happened twice in a row though.
Though I also notice there is no official windows 7 support from compaq/hp for your laptop either.
It could simply be a bunch of drivers failing.

Either way if you are unable to run a SFC a repair install is probably your best bet. It will reset the windows settings but should leave programs and files still functional.

I purchased a new notebook with Windows 7 in October. During the first weeks I uninstalled McAfee and replaced the harddrive. Since November Windows Update fails with error messages and defender does not start anymore. I made several virus scans (complete) with multiple antivirus programs but nothing showed up.Since it took my days to install various software, I do not want to re-install W7. I also have no good backup that I could restore. I am really surprised that there is not even a single entry regarding the error code in the Microsoft Knowledge base or elsewhere.I really would appreciate help.

Hi there,

I'm trying to update my windows 8 to windows 8.1 on a HP Pavilion g7-2261sb.

However, after numerous trials, every time, the installation stops and says "failed to install. error code 0xc0000374".
EDIT: I checked again and it comes after the "collecting data" part.

I've ran the update checker (compatibility), and that gave no problems or errors.

What is the problem here, and how could I solve it?

Thanks a bunch in advance!

Martin

A:Fail to update to windows 8.1

Jus a hunch but it could be some background process that is interfering with your attempted update so I would suggest the following:

Disable all startup programs via task manager and try your update again. Also unplug any peripherals (including the printer) and test again.

Good luck.

Hello.  first off - thank you for being here! I am stumped by computer problems. I see that the guide says to list only one problem.  However I have many and I don't know if they are tied in to each other.  I have a Windows 7 with service pack 1 installed.  It's a home premium version.  64 bit.  the problems go back a ways but seemed to have started when I began to explore other search engines and downloaded a few to try (slimjet, comodo, tor).  I cannot update windows.  I get an error 80072EE2.  I did some reading and tried a winsock reset.  I installed and ran a MS fixit tool which only fixed one of two problems, but the computer still cannot update.  I can't remember why I ran sfc /scannow - but there were no issues when I ran it.  the other problems that started are that I can't send an email with attachment in gmail. I can't upload pictures on facebook. videos won't play properly on facebook,  the computer is very very slow.  I have run Norton security scans which usually just show tracking cookies which I remove.  I have installed and have run tuneup utilities, malwarebytes, CC cleaner, I routinely run disk cleaner and clear history.

Hey guys. So, i seem to be having another problem with Windows 7 (#2 to be exact). Windows Update fails to install nearly EVERY SINGLE UPDATE!!! And each time it fails, it returns the same two error codes: 800B0100, and 800736B3. Regardless of what it is, whether it is Critical, Recommended, Optional, etc... it fails! I never had this problem with XP. Does anybody have experience with this problem? Thanks!

A:Windows Update Fail

When you tried to update, did you get any error messages?
Changing major components, such as a motherboard you may have to re-activate XP with a phone call to Microsoft. Just explain what you did and have your activation key handy
To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:

1. Click 'Start', point to 'All Programs', point to 'Accessories', point to 'System Tools', and then click 'Activate Windows'.
2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.
3. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next.
4. When activation is completed and you receive the following message, click OK.
"You have successfully activated your copy of Windows".

Hi, I have just signed up here as I'm having loads of trouble trying to install a windows update. The update is Windows 7 service pack 1 (KB976932) and I get the error code 8024200D. I have tried the System Update Readiness tool and it didnt help. Help please.

A:Windows update Fail

That error means that the system thinks the updated files the installer is attempting to update already exist at a newer version. As with all SP1 installation errors, please stop the Windows Update service, make another attempt to install SP1 (and reproduce the error), and then post your cbs.log file (%windir%\logs\cbs\) showing the failure. You can re-start the WU service at that point.

My Dell XPS 8700, I bought from Dell has been a pretty good machine. But then I started seeing the modem failing to initialize. It would do this for so long, I'd have to get up an walk away for awhile. Other times only a system restore would fix it, but even that wasn't guaranteed. I noticed when I gave up and finally just want to reboot that it would hang on "Windows is shutting down," but never would. My last resort then is to do a hard shut down. Only problem then is that it would hang on "Please wait while your computer is updating." Only it would never boot back up. If it leave it like this overnight then sometimes I wake up to the desktop but the modem is still not engaged. The modem is a cable modem and it was JUST changed out to a newer one about three weeks ago. But this intermittent problem has been going on for well over a year. Now the most recent development is that the lower right corner of the desktop says that my Windows is not genuine. The ONLY thing that is not OEM from Dell on this computer is my sound card. I installed a Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi on it the day I got the computer.

I run CCleaner both for windows cache and registry cleaner on average once a week, and it is constantly active. I'm on my computer mostly for college but I also play a lot of games on Pogo. I'm not what you would consider a "gamer" utilizing other online platforms.

Currently getting the error 0xC004F057 - Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine. A couple of months ago I upgraded to a SSD and cloned the previous HDD using Acronis. I didn't have any activation issues at that time, although I can't remember if I did activate (1st time I have done this). I followed this by upgrading to Windows 10. The upgrade worked but the system was slow so I reverted back to Windows 7. Everything was fine until a couple of days ago. I have since tried typing in the product key from the sticker but it says it is not a valid. The other thing I note is that the sticker is saying I have Windows 7 Home Premium, but the report below is saying I have Windows 7 Professional. Appreciate any guidance to fix. Cheers

Hi all,

Randomly had a not-genuine error pop up on me last night. The copy of windows IS genuine, I purchased this PC directly from DigitalStorm and never had any issues until last night. I'd like to repair any missing/corrupt files if possible.

After searching high and low I've found a few steps to try and diagnose the issue: I've run chkdsk on the OS HD, and then ran SFC SCANNOW from elevated cmd.

I've included the CBS.log and I've also run the diagnostics tool, here are the results (below)

Thank you SO MUCH for any help you can provide!!!

All the best,

Mike

Hi,

I have owned my laptop for 1 and a half years now and all of a sudden I'm getting this error. I brought the laptop in to the shop 2 weeks ago after it started smoking from the power input plug area and it works fine up until today's error.

The scenario was kind of weird. My battery was plugged in and the blue light on the battery was on but my laptop was indicating that it wasn't plugged in. I shut down, and tried the plug again. The battery light lit up on the front of the laptop, so I powered back on. Upon loading up, I get the Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine error. Not sure if these events are related. I updated all my windows updates and restarted. Then I am now getting a prompt for an invalid activation key.

I ran a windows activation validation, and it says "Windows has not yet been activated with a genuine product key. Not to worry, we can help with that"

And then lists a bunch of prices for windows 7...

Laptop:
Asus K53S

I'm not very good with computers. I had a sticker on my laptop that was peeling off so I removed it and apparently my activation key along with it, not realizing I might need it again... I have the box it came in but I don't see an activation key on that.

Help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

A:Windows 7 error: Build 7601, this copy of Windows is not genuine

Oh geez... I called up Asus and the guy informed me that my key was on the back of the laptop. Putting that in fixed my issues, hahaha.

Hello

So after almost a year with a legit copy from a PC dealer, im now getting this "This computer is not running genuine windows" error pop up a couple times a day.

Im unable to open the validation site in IE even with active script on, and the legitcheck.hta says it's not a valid windows. I have tried the method of cmd.exe with admin rights and it successfully activated the windows product code on my case. Still no change.

slui.exe and slui.exe 4 doesn't open at all for me. Neither does the "Activate Windows" shortcut.

I have multi language installed from dealer if that makes any difference (Norwegian & English)

Im leaning towards it might be either malware or an error with either an AntiVirus or a registry cleaner.

Please help

from where did you get the Win 7 copy that you are using? If you bought it, seems like the copy that you have is not legit. Normally you can just go to MS site and activate the windows.

A:Windows no longer genuine after update

The installed Key is NOT a retail one - it's an MAK Volume License one, which is not valid for resale. The Key has been abused, and MS have blocked it.

I would NEVER buy software in eBay - particularly Windows software - as it's known that over 50% is counterfeit.

Here's a variation on my standard spiel...

The Key in use is an MSDN Key from a not-for-resale MAK Volumme License.
Unless you are a member of the Licensed organisation, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.
You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

So I have a client PC that I don't have all the required info for (not logged in right this second) but I have the diag report.

PC says not genuine and won't update. The key that is coming up seems to be an evaluation copy. Is this just a bad update that may have caused her to become not genuine or is this a non genuine copy? Getting legal is no problem but I don't want to have her buy a new license if its just a problem and not because the previous tech gave her cracked software.

Tried to run CheckSur but it won't work. I was able to rearm the key because it acts like an evaluation key but that only helps for a couple days.

One error I was getting :

I'll add more info when I can get back on the PC.

Just read this on Broadband Reports forum and thought I'd share this info, as many have issues with the Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage & Notification software installations now being forced upon Windows OS users during regular security updates/patches:http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,16402494~start=0#endI was wondering how long a class action suit would take. You'd think MS would have learned something from the Sony Rootkit mess.

A:Windows Genuine Advantage Update

About time. I wonder how much time and bandwidth are wasted on things the user neither needs nor wants. I wonder how much anti-piracy protection will be enough. And I wonder how long before the government plants chips in our brains to monitor us for our own good? If that seems like a stretch, think about all the video cameras on every street in London.

On another forum, I have this quote from Ayn Rand in my profile:

"Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris.
"We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's
not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power
and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only
power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals.
Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One
declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible
for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of
law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just
pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted ? and you create a nation of law-breakers
? and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system,
Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be
much easier to deal with." (Atlas Shrugged 1957)

As per the posting instructions I have done SFC and SURTool. Logs attached. Looks like I have a whole heap of corrupted files.

Win 7 Pro x64
Update Error Code: 80073712 (Windows Update encountered an unknown error.)
