Q: Windows Update no longer working, Windows now states not genuine

I recently upgraded my hard disk and operating system to Windows 7 Professional from XP Professional that was orignally on my Lenovo T61p Think Pad.

A:Windows no longer genuine after update

The installed Key is NOT a retail one - it's an MAK Volume License one, which is not valid for resale. The Key has been abused, and MS have blocked it.

I would NEVER buy software in eBay - particularly Windows software - as it's known that over 50% is counterfeit.

Here's a variation on my standard spiel...

The Key in use is an MSDN Key from a not-for-resale MAK Volumme License.
Unless you are a member of the Licensed organisation, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.
You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

and

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

Hi,  I have a Lenova Thinkpad model SL510 that I purchased almost 3 years ago, brand new right from the factory.  It came with Windows 7 Professional 32 bit operating system.  I have never reformatted the laptop, never touched the os.  I ran a  microsoft diagnostic tool but I don't understand the results: and don't know if I'm allowed to post it here.  I called Lenova but since the computer is out of warranty, they can't help me.  I hope someone here can help because I can not run updates, especially for microsoft security essentials.

I've tried everything I know of, and have even had two separate chat sessions with Microsoft support, giving them control of my computer to fix the problem. Both times they did pretty much the same thing of trying to reinstall it by typing in the product key again, which goes through and the window says that my windows is active and genuine. But then a few hours pass and the popup returns, which I have copied and attached to this post.

So I have a client PC that I don't have all the required info for (not logged in right this second) but I have the diag report.

PC says not genuine and won't update. The key that is coming up seems to be an evaluation copy. Is this just a bad update that may have caused her to become not genuine or is this a non genuine copy? Getting legal is no problem but I don't want to have her buy a new license if its just a problem and not because the previous tech gave her cracked software.

Tried to run CheckSur but it won't work. I was able to rearm the key because it acts like an evaluation key but that only helps for a couple days.

One error I was getting :
0xC004F063 computer bios is missing required license

I've been going around with this for a while now and I can't figure out what is going on. WU consistenly errors out on me when I try to download updates and system restore will no longer restore to any older points. I've also noticed that running all of the Microsoft Diskfix tools has somehow managed to lower my SSD space in the neighbourhood of 27 GB and I'd like to get that back. I don't even know where to start so can someone point me in the right direction. I've run every diagnostic tool and everything should be working. Safe mode doesn't help either. However if anyone cares to advise I would appreciate it.

I no longer can get Windows update to work; only getting a screen that reads:

"Windows Update can no longer check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." Please see attachment.

I have restarted the computer but still get the same message.

What is meant by "the service is not running"?

Any suggestions will be thoroughly appreciated.

Thanks

The other day, I wasn't able to log into my laptop. The login prompt would not show, and when it did after n restarts, it would get stuck logging in. I decided to refresh my laptop and start from scratch.
While updating my files and programs, I tried to use Windows Update. It wouldn't work, so I used Fixit tool found on Microsoft's support website. Everytime I run the program, it fixes the same couple of problems. It won't download updates or install them, and it alternates between saying there are updates and there aren't. The view update page doesn't load correctly, and restarting doesn't fix anything. I don't think it's a virus, since it's pretty much a clean hard-drive and all of my antiviruses come up clean.
Where can I go from here?

Hi,

I run into the issue where Windows update is no longer working (keeps searching forever) and the CPU usage is at 50%. I found that others encountered the same issue on this forum. However, it was not clear to me what the solution is.

I had the problem previously in which case a reboot and time seem to have resolved the issue. No longer.
I kept the PC up-to-date so far. However, I had to uninstall two updates to enable a function that MS eliminated.
(KB3185330 and KB3108699.). The feature it disabled: hosting IE inline a Silverlight app within Microsoft Media Center).

Does anyone know how to fix this CPU usage issue? Other than disabling Windows Update?

My laptop automatically updated Windows 10. The update seemed to go through okay, but none of my Microsoft Games work any more. I had installed the older versions of Microsoft Games (not the new versions, which I do not like), and they had been working fine since I installed them on Windows 10. I tried de-installing them entirely, rebooting, and reinstalling, but still no luck. When I click on the file to start a game, a small 'thinking' rotating circle icon comes on for a few seconds and then nothing happens, no application starts.

Hi,

I built my first custom PC about 4 months ago. I bought windows 7 ultimate off Ebay, installed it, entered my product key, installed Microsoft Security Essentials and everything worked fine. At the time it said my copy of windows 7 was genuine.

Now 4 months latter my computer randomly pops up with a message telling me my copy is no longer genuine. Microsoft Security Essentials is no longer running, my desktop background has turned black and in the bottom right hand corner of my screen there is a message saying

"Windows 7
Build 7600
This Copy of Windows is not genuine"

As far as I can tell my copy of Windows 7 is genuine. It came with a sealed COA, a proof of License label and holographic discs.

So does anyone know why this has happened, and what I can do to fix it? If you need more information from me just let me know. All help is much appreciated.

Thanks so much

A:Windows 7 no longer genuine??

There is a problem with TechNet and MSDN subscriber keys being sold on eBay.

Contact MS Customer Service to see if you have one of the bad keys. If so see if eBay can do something about this.

If Customer Service determines the key is good, they will open a Support case which will help you get it activated one way or another.

I had an issue where my hdd for my laptop had some bad sectors and was causing my system to be very slow and it took a very long time to login. A drive check program from Lenovo indicated the drive had issues reading the drive.

I replaced the original 500 GB Hitachi drive, with a 500 GB WD Caviar Blue drive. I used WD Acronis True Image software to clone the drive. Clone worked, system boots, everything looks okay. There were some errors, as a result of bad reads or block issues, but the drive was going bad so this was to be expected. (First copy resulted in Windows complaint that it was not genuine, so I redid the clone, not allowing Acronis to make any adjustments; that is why I started looking into whether or not my windows was now fixed).

Two methods indicate the Windows 7 Professional I have installed is genuine, however, two do not.
1. If I click on Start->Computer (right click)->Properties, it indicates that windows is activated.
2. If I type ?activate? in a run window, again it indicates it?s ?activated?
3. If I go to Genuine Microsoft Software I think it fails, because it takes me to a screen to buy Win7Pro for $149 4. If I run the MGADiag.exe tool, it indicates that there are some files that have been tampered with. All hardware is the same, except for the hard drive. You are going to have to purchase a new license or new copy of Windows (either 7 or 10 but if you plan on staying with 10 then that is what you should go for). If the license is high, you can purchase a new OEM version ($99. home, $139. The Key is blocked at MS's activation servers, because it's designed to self-activate on every boot using the certificate in the BIOS SLIC table and licenses built into the Recovery media. MS cannot assist in these cases as it's the OEM's responsibility under the licensing terms. In your case it seems that the licenses aren't being found for some reason. The normal reason for this is that you've used retail media to install the OS (or do a repair install) - such media doesn't contain the licenses, and so the system goes first into grace mode, and after three days it starts giving non-genuine notifications. The only thing that might help is to rebuild the licensing store - if this doesn't work, then a reinstall using the recovery media will be required. Please first try recreating Licensing Store. Now, lemme just say that the laptop is old and the casing clearly says "Designed for Windows XP" and he had told me that it was messed up and he got it fixed, so I'm guessing that whomever fixed it put Windows 7 on it. So last night, I booted it up to continue doing research on something else I was doing for him and it took about an hour to boot up because it was configuring something (I think it said it was the service pack). Before that though, earlier in the day, I actually downloaded two programs that would allow me to use the laptop as a WiFi access point. Once it finally booted up last night, it said that the copy wasn't genuine. "Windows 7 Build 7601 is not geniune" is in the bottom corner of the desktop now. I hope to get help here as the answer seem impossible to find elsewhere on the net!

I have (or had...) a validated and genuin OEM Windows 7 product key and everything has worked fine for several years.
The product has been validated and Windows Update has worked fine.

But now the Windows 7 is no longer validated!
"Status is not available"
"Product ID: Not available"

A Windows 7 validating on Microsoft sais that there are files missing or are corrupt.
So how do I fix this?
I have the product key, I just need to know where to activate it again and how!

Also the Windows Update has stopped working with error C0000022 so I guess these two things are connected somehow?

Will my system recovery CD (not system restore) help or will that just wipe the whole computer out?
(I don't want to do a complete reinstallation of Windows 7)

Tried another system restore point but that didn't help either.

Very greatful for help in how to solve this! Thank you!

Hello,

I bought a laptop from Lenovo (E545) with Windows 7 Professional x64 pre-installed with A LOT of bloatware. So stupid me decided to format and do a clean installation.

Lenovo did not provide me with a recovery disk or a Windows disk so I downloaded the image from Microsoft's website and made a boot-able USB as per their instructions. I used Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to get the CD key and product ID information I needed.

After the installation, everything seemed fine for a few days. Then I got the "This copy of Windows is not genuine" error, along with the black desktop background. When trying to re-activate, I receive error 0xC004F063. When I click on more information, I'm informed: "The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer BIOS is missing a required license."

I was hoping someone can take a look at the diagnostic report below:

Hi,

I am a tech idiot and I need help. I appreciate anything anyone can do.

For several months I have been getting messages that our windows may not be genuine. It came installed on our Dell and we bought directly from Dell so I basically ignored it. Recently we got a message that it is not genuine in the bottom right corner of the screen and windows things on the screen started to look clumsy and not run right.

I tried many times to follow the validation processes to fix this but it would never complete. I had my stepson try to fix it and he is a computer pro. He tried remotely and came back saying that the windows version itself was apparently too corrupt and I needed to reinstall it from the original disk - which seems to have got lost in a move. Ugghhh. Oh yeah, several times in my efforts I was told to run chkdsk - did so and it identified different issues, seemed to fix them but made no difference in my ability to fix the validation issue.

So, I bit the bullet and went out to BestBuy and got a Windows 7 Builders Pack. I tried to update windows several times using it - no go. It got to the same point every time and quit. It basically said there was a file that was not correct and install could not be completed. So, I decided to back up and do a full install. Same result. I am at my wit's end. I ran the diagnostic below. Before I try more dramatic moves like hard drive replacement - or new computer, I thought I would give it a last go here.

A:Windows 7 - Genuine Issues Leading to Unable to Update/Install Windows

So, youve reinstalled windows 7, youve downloaded the network drivers from dell.com and installed them, and youve tried to activate windows with the key on your COA or the key from the system builder pack, and it will not activate ?

And youre saying you went to BestBuy and they had a Windows 7 builder pack ????????

Amazing How much was that, if you dont mind me asking ?

If you used that license it should say OEM System Builder, but yours says OEM SLP which means System Locked Pre-Installation. Are you sure youre trying the right key from BestBuy ?

Hello! First post on here, and I have seen several posts that are similar to my problem but not one exactly.

I recently installed some Windows Updates, after a reboot and Windows Configured after the updates, I log in to a Black Desktop, with nothing on it, no start button or anything with
"Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine" In the right hand corner.

I purchased this copy legitimately almost 3 years ago and have done one major upgrade (2 years ago now).

I can't get to a prompt to run an MSDiagnostics.
(I have not had the time to try and boot into Safe mode or anything to see if I can get a prompt there).

After reading a similar thread, I am thinking it may be a damaged file as it froze during one of the updates and I had to perform a hard reboot.

Thanks so much!

I recently did an unusually long Windows update that took about an hour in total, and once my computer was running again, Windows gadgets said "Windows Desktop Gadgets has stopped working" and then I tried to open Skype which also said "Skype has stopped working". I tried updating Java, a second Windows update, uninstalling and reinstalling Skype, advanced uninstalling Skype and reinstalling, but nothing I'm doing seems to be having any effect. I'm completely out of ideas, and was hoping someone could help me to solve this?

A:After Windows update Skype and Windows Desktop Gadgets no longer run.

Bump. This is at 100 views with no one offering any advice. I'm really stuck here, I've exhausted everything that I know how to do to fix faulty computers. I would really appreciate any advice. Thank you in advance.

I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct sub-forum, but it all started out with problems with activation and windows update, so whatever .

A couple of days ago, I suddenly had a watermark in the bottom right corner of my screen saying that I should activate windows. I have a legit copy of windows and had it registered before when I installed it (about 5 months ago) and had no problems until now. When I go to the activation window and attempt to re-register, I get this message:
"Windows can't activate right now. Try activating again later. If that doesn't work, contact support. Error code: 0xC004F012"

After trying this during different times of the day for about a week, I started checking other stuff and found another quite big problem: I can't start Windows Update.

The service is set to "disabled" and when I change it to anything but this, it automatically changes back after around 30 seconds. Up until now, Windows Update never had any problems and ran regularily. So then I started googling this problem and found some solutions, all of which do not work:

I tried resetting the Windows Update (https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Rese...), but that didn't help either, since it coulnd't complete every step. It failed when running "sfc /scannow" at around 15%.

So I searched for solutions to that problem and found this: https://www.infopackets.com/news/9620/how-fix-sfc-scann...
Checkdisk worked fine, but then I noticed... Read more

Just read this on Broadband Reports forum and thought I'd share this info, as many have issues with the Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage & Notification software installations now being forced upon Windows OS users during regular security updates/patches:http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,16402494~start=0#endI was wondering how long a class action suit would take. You'd think MS would have learned something from the Sony Rootkit mess.

About time. I wonder how much time and bandwidth are wasted on things the user neither needs nor wants. I wonder how much anti-piracy protection will be enough. And I wonder how long before the government plants chips in our brains to monitor us for our own good? If that seems like a stretch, think about all the video cameras on every street in London.

On another forum, I have this quote from Ayn Rand in my profile:

"Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris.
"We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's
not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power
and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only
power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals.
Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One
declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible
for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of
law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just
pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted ? and you create a nation of law-breakers
? and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system,
Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be
much easier to deal with." (Atlas Shrugged 1957)

Hi,

My parents PC has run into some issues with genuine advantage (it is genuine - has been running fine for a year or two) and in attempts to fix that i've caused more issues (i know, i know ). Please note this is my parents PC, not mine - specs are not per my profile and it might take a while to get back to you at times.

Updates are set to notify, but not install. When i try to "Check for updates" i get the error:

Windows Update cannot current check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart the computer.

I also cannot update AV definitions in MSE.

Needless to say, a restart doesn't resolve. Firewall is TinyWall and has been opened/switched off at times to see if there was a communication block but all looks ok there. Internet connection is also fine.

I assume the Genuine issue is preventing updates, although 'service not started' is a mystery. When i try to "Resolve Online Now" (activation) i get an error running/installing the downloaded file WindowsActivationUpdate.exe:
"Update installation failed. Error information - 0x80072EFD (0)"

I don't know if this is helpful but i've seen it be asked for often enough so i've included it. MGADiag says (removed license/hash):

My computer ran some updates overnight this week, and ever since then i've been getting a popup telling me my copy of Windows is not genuine. I bought the computer a year or two ago with Windows preinstalled and haven't made any changes to my system recently. I'm still showing that my Windows is activated in Properties, but i keep getting the popup, and running the validation link from the popup itself at microsoft.com results in it just sort of...dangling there spinning, and nothing happens. Any ideas?

I was having an issue with Windows reporting as not genuine, and found some advice online to uninstall and reinstall KB971033. I uninstalled it fine, but when trying to reinstall it, it is failing with error code 800706F7. This is a volume license Windows 7 install, installed with a valid MAK.

I'm sure the two issues are related.

From some research online I have tried to run the Windows Update Readiness Tool to no success.

So I upgraded my asus p8z68-v lx bios recently to version 4003 and now my desktop is displaying the annoying messages. I also attached the other two HDDs to the SATA ports that were unplugged and might have moved some of the sata cables around in the process. I had this installed by a network admin and I'm pretty sure the windows 7 isn't a fake. It was all working fine until I decided to upgrade my bios and some drivers, then that showed up. Also I don't have a key for it. Any help on this is much appreciated.

I've had this disk for probably 3 years or so - pretty sure it came with my custom built PC (from Silent PC). Its worked flawlessly. Now last night my Windows went through an automatic update (as they do) and suddenly I'm getting this 7601 Build Windows not Genuine.

I've got the disk and the code right here, but when I put the disk in it fails as it says the disk is older than the version currently on the computer.

I've got another windows 7 disk that I think came with a dell machine, but haven't tried to use that - I figure it will fail.

I've copied and pasted this MGADiag info below - any ideas? Or whats a good number to call MSoft to resolve?

Hello I'm new here, I have what I (and apparently the service center rep on the phone) think is a unique problem/conundrum. I am posting from my laptop because there is no way for me to access the Internet on the desktop.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and for the past month the desktop has had no access to the Internet. Originally, when it would boot up it would show an error that says something like DNSAPI.dll is missing. I believe this is somehow connected to the fact that I can no longer use the Internet on any browser or software. The problem got worse once my girlfriend tried to find solutions herself and the computer started saying Windows is not genuine.

My gut reaction is to backup and completely wipe the computer, but the problem is she has some games on her computer that she doesn't have cdkeys for. She can not re-install these games unless she has the cdkeys. In summary, I'm at a complete loss.

Here are the details as per the Windows not Genuine Instructions:

After updating Windows 7 Pro, my computer stopped booting with an "Error loading Operating System" immediately after BIOS is done.

Right now, I'm using an EeePC running Ubuntu. I formatted an USB flash drive to NTFS and used dd to write the Win 7 64-bit Recovery disc onto it. I added "Removable Device" to the top of the boot order in BIOS, but the computer still displays "error loading operating system" immediately after exiting BIOS, regardless of which USB slot the flash drive is in (my computer has four USB slots).

Now, I'm out of ideas and looking for help.

I have my laptop with Win 8.1 set to automatically download updates and to notify me when any are available so I can see what they are before installing them. When I realized that my almost-daily Windows Defender definition updates were not showing up, I investigated and found no check for updates had occurred since August 4th. Trying a manual check, I got an error message with a code of 80244019. Nothing I found in Windows Help or on the web has been useful.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem? Other than installing updates, I haven't made any changes whatsoever to the laptop in months.

Windows Update no longer works from Start Menu or manually from Microsoft's website. From the start menu, when selecting Windows Update, it opens IE window but IE reports that "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and has the "Diaognose Connection Problems" box. Typing the url to Mircosoft.com connects fine. Once on the Windows Update page it starts Checking to see if the computer has the latest version and then stops and reoports "X The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view."

Connecting to internet using the Desktop IE icon works and navigates to other sites ok too but often getting a Windows box stating "Generic Host Process for Win 32 Service has encountered a problem and needs to close. Do you want to report this to Microsoft..etc." I have selected to report it many times and then IE will usually shut down. Typing a search phrase in the IE search box returns Google results to the page but when selecting any of the search results it ends in a redirect to some unrelated page. This does not happen if you type the url for Google in the address box and then do the search. All of these things happening seems to be some kind of virus infection that keeps... Read more

I just noticed today that My windows update won't run anymore. It's the red X image that lots of people are describing and when I try to turn it on it says it can't turn on because it's not running. Windows update is not in my services at all, nor is BITS. I've tried getting in command prompt and as far as it tells me, Bits is an invalid service name. wuauserv is also an invalid service name. Its like all of the sudden Windows update and the programs people recommend messing with to fix it are all gone. Windows defender is also not present on my computer anymore. I don't know why. I tried downloading it and it is telling me I already have it. I can see it in my search box but when I click on it to turn it on it says "the specified service does not exist as an installed service."

I am in the process of getting rid of a trojan dropper so I wonder if these problems could be related. I have been able to update just fine in the past.

All worked fine - problems have only arisen since installing updates on 29th Feb.  No configuration has changed.

When I say not working - the VPN connects successfully, and I get allocated an IP address in the remote LAN (10.x.x.x).  However, I can access nothing in the remote LAN, either by browser, ping or tracert, always using IP address (so it's not a DNS
issue).  Events in the system log all report successful connection.

There is no internet access via the VPN, as I have "use default gateway on remote network" switched off (intentionally) for IPv4 on the VPN config (this has been the case for months).  Switching this back on does not help.  However,
I do manually set up routes to some IP addresses to run through the VPN - this was working fine but also no longer works (the routes set up correctly according to the "route" command, but the server is not accessible).  Internet access via the
local connection continues to work fine when connected to the VPN (now, as before).
It's very much as if everything is fine, but no routing is taking place for IP addresses on the other side of the VPN connection.

The remote end is a Vigor router - this also has not changed.

I'm running Windows 8.1 (standard) with a reasonably full set of updates, on a Lenovo Yoga 3 11" (UK variant) with up to date drivers from Lenovo (which were updated several weeks ago and have been working fine).  The VPN client is t... Read more

Hello!

I am running: Windows 7 64bit
On: Acer Aspire 5750 laptop

For a couple months my computer has been locking up at random intervals for several seconds each time. I got no error messages and each time it came back acting fine, so I just assumed I had too much running. Now, I'm not so sure it wasn't the HD failing, because...

Last week, I noticed the shield on the shutdown button indicating windows needed to run an update. I closed out of everything and pushed the button to shutdown/install updates. The computer immediately crashed almost as if I had held down the power button. When I attempted to restart it, my only 2 options were to start normally or launch repair mode. Normal didn't work, so I launched repair. Repair ran for close to 4 days. In the first 36 hours it asked to be restarted twice, after that it just kept running until finally I gave up and shut it down with the power button.

Like a moron, I do not have a recent backup of my files and really wish they could still be saved.

Since then:Tried to rescue files with Umbutu boot stick- error said it could not mount to drive.
Tried to launch safe mode with command prompt via F8- system went back into repair mode instead.
Tried to launch to last known good configuration via F8- system went back to repair mode, again.
Tried to launch via Windows Boot Disk- the screen it gave me was not the same screen as the screenshots on the forums suggested I should get. My screen was an Acer logo with 3 option... Read more

Hi there. I have a major problem as I can no longer get any security updates for vista through the windows update.
Whenever I click on it, the window opens, and just a white background is presented, then I get a message saying not responding.
Then the entire windows explorer crashes, and then reloads quickly.

Does anyone have any ideas in relation to how I can get this windows update working again?

Many thanks!

Hi, my problems began with a reoccurring failure to successfully install Windows Security updates. I could manually install some, but the rest refused to install. I kind of ignored it at that point. Then I started getting a pop up in the last few days saying "This computer is not running genuine windows 7". The link the pop-up sends me to just has a page selling Windows 7 on it.

Interestingly enough...

One of my co-workers brought to my attention the new windows update (KB905474) was coming out soon and it will cause illegal copies of XP to notify the user that it may not be genuine. While we all try and use legal software, it can often be difficult in a work environment to do so. Concerned about this, i decided to check my WSUS server for the mysterious update.

After going through it several times i could not find it, but my test computer group (that i test updates on) recieved the update! I have searched everywhere and I can't find where it is getting that update from. Is this proof of microsoft's 'phone home' updating even though the computer is on a domain that uses a GPO to point Windows Update to the WSUS server?

Has anyone else seen this?

Hey all, I am hoping someone can help me with this.

I awhile ago (a month and some change) I had gotten infected by Ad-aware viruses, look2me, sidekick, and a few others which with some help was able to get it cleaned up. I noticed a few weeks later, and especially now that it seems my Windows Installer was either corrupted, deleted or just simply messed up. And I can no longer install most programs that use the WinStaller to put new programs on my pc.

Any help out there for me on this?

I get a error usually that says "1607: Unable to install InstallShield Scripting: Runtime Error".

Or something along the lines of "Windows cannot install program. This usually means your win installer is no longer working corretly, currently being used or your are in safemode.".
Any help would be much appreciated, I need to install some new software on to my pc and im screwed at the moment. I just moved and I no longer have my XP cds, and I cant do updates anymore, for SOME reason Microsoft will no longer allow me to. Though ive done them up January of this year, I get error messages or messages that just tell me I cant use their service

My windows 8 library is not working....nightmare

Anyway, I've researched how to delete and then reinstall/programme (sorry if my jargon aint with it). What I cannot understand is why this library facility has so many awful reviews on the forum, who are slatting this facility and how it eventually clogs up memory with duplicated files. Then there are others, they proclaim if you take the time to learn and understand how to use it, it will transform your searching experience

What confuses me more is that there are many attempting to disable or totally eradicate it from the computer There is a "registry hack" website for windows 7, which disables the library.

I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on this matter AND also If anyone would feel temptation towards disabling it completely. If these people don't want the library to work, is there a reason why they do not just leave it as mine is now. Whenever I save a word doc, it warns me library not working, but the files stores elsewhere no problem. Maybe I shouldn't bother repairing or perhaps that affects the overall performance

I'd be grateful for any thoughts

A:Windows 8 Library is no longer working

Learn to use Libraries. They can make it real easy to have a single place to access similar data spread across multiple folders/partitions/hard drives. Entries in libraries are nothing more than pointers to the real location of data. They take up almost no space at all so there is no reason to ever delete them except for when you no longer want to access something that way, then just right click on the entry and select Remove entry from library.

Likewise, when you want to add an entry, right click on it and select Include in Library then pick the library you want it included in or create a new library.

For instance, I have 3 library entries under Documents, my personal documents folder, my wife's personal documents folder and My Documents which is the root of the above two and has all the stuff that is not specific to either of us.

I haven't used Divx Plus. For most things avi/divx I use the free XVid codec or tools that use it. For HD stuff either mkv or mp4. This search tool should find most free and paid converters. Just enter the From and To codecs/containers and hit Search.

Hello,

I recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Windows 7 and noticed my USB 3 WD Passport external hard drive stays powered on as well as my round LED's (Lock/Start/Reset). With Windows 7 I just enabled EuP in the bios and that powered everything down when I shut down including the LED's. Now with Windows 8.1 that function doesn't work. They all stay on. I tried disabling all the power functions in Power Management for the USB but still, the power stays on. For some reason the EuP enable function does not work like before. I believe its related to Windows 8.1 since it worked fine with Windows 7. For some reason they locked USB power after shutdown. Does anyone have any ideas?

PS: I already tried resetting the bios to no effect.

I'm running Windows 8.1 Core 64bit, I'm logged in with Local user account, so device encryption is off and there is no way to enable it.

I have set Windows update to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". I usually wait several weeks after windows updates are released before I install them.

First when optional updates were released on September 15th I could see KB3084905 listed in available optional updates list, but 2 weeks later when I decided to install optional updates KB3084905 was no longer offered to install.

Was it pulled by Microsoft because it's not applicable to my system since I'm logged in with local user account or for some other reasons?

I had some issues installing my updates initially, so I did them in small chunks in order to prevent my computer from freezing up. Finally I was ready to install service pack 1, but the installation continued to fail. After trying many things, Windows thinks that I have never installed any updates at all, and can't search for new ones. When I try, this is the error I receive:

Error(s) found:
Code 8007370B Windows update encountered an unknown error."

It also says:

Most recent check for updates: Never

Which is of course not true. I'd like to try uninstalling these updates so I can try again, but I can't do that if it thinks they aren't there.

I have tried using the Update Readiness tool, which claims to be successful, but changes nothing.

I have run the update troubleshooter which claims to fix two issues, but changes nothing.

I have tried to run sfc /scannow as suggested by many people, but I receive this error:
"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

I have tried stopping the Windows Update service, deleting the Software Distribution folder, and restarting the service, but it changes nothing.

I'm at my wit's end; this is a company computer and I really need to get it working again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Yesterday evening (wednesday 14 Januari 2015) a few updates were downloaded for my PC. As I shut it down for the evening it wanted to install 6 updates. Normally this takes a minute or so and it's done. This time it stayed for a while on update 1 of 6. Instead of waiting for them to be done and turning off the power I decided to let it update while I went to sleep.
This morning the PC was shut down. When I tried to start it up again it just hummed a bit, didn't show anything on the screen and then shut off again, only to turn itself on again in an infinite loop.
Thinking it might be stopped by draining the energy, I shut it down completely by holding the power button. Then took the power out and activated it so it would use up all remaining power in the system (the lights flashed for a moment and went off). Then I turned the power on again and tried to start the PC, but I got the same results as before.

The PC itself wasn't showing any signs of problems before the update. I was playing a game (planetside 2) with unstable servers that sometimes would hog my internet connection so much during a lag spike that all internet traffic from my PC stopped momentarily.
The PC has been cleaned a few weeks ago and is still reasonably clean right now.

If the latter, then it's a hardware problem, and you need to seek specialist advice.

It fails to install updates and claims that updates have never been installed.
I attempted to install the latest SURT, twice, but it failed both times.
I was considering going onto SFC scan step, but since SURT failed, I thought I should ask first.

A:Windows Update no longer functioning properly

Yep - do the SFC scan, and post the full set of data. Hopefully CheckSUR got far enough in to leave traces behind that we can work out what broke it.

I had installed the original Windows 7 beta build 7000 on a Shuttle X100 XPC and when I ran Windows Update, it pulled down a nice pre-release version of a Windows 7 driver that worked very well. This XPC is about the size of a hard-back textbook and uses an ATI Radeon Mobility X1400 GPU chip. This is much like many mid-level notebooks from a few years ago. It's not great, but has enough power to play most any multimedia and supports full Aero.

Today I decided to install one of the newer betas of Windows 7, so I performed a fresh install and foolishly expected the nice video driver to show up in Windows Update. IT"S GONE! After some web searching, I discovered I'm not the only fool who trusted Microsoft concerning this ATI driver. I was able to install a Vista driver from Levono in compatibility mode. It does work, but I'd prefer the real thing.

Bye.

A:ATI X1400 Driver No Longer in Windows Update

That's often the problem when counting on seeing everything through the MS updates. A quick trip directly to ATI.AMD might spare you some problems there since that's the manufacturer.

Tadaaa.... Look under Vista 32/64>ATI mobility at Graphics Drivers & Software The X1400 is in plain sight!

For 7 drivers the wait will be there since it's an unfinished version of Windows also seeing an unfinished support base. The one saving grace however is being able to still use Vista drivers while Vista couldn't use XP drivers!

For some reason after updating, my sound will not work anywhere, but what's odd is that Firefox will play sound without a problem (YouTube, for example).. Note that I can't do a System Restore since it was disabled (for space reasons).

A:Sound no longer works after Windows Update!

Hi

my sugguestion would be to unistall the sound card via device manager, the to re-install using the Scan Hardware changes icon... this should solve the problem...

after an update, can no longer use the fax. The computer can see the modem and it is working properly, but Windows Fax and Scan cannot see it. I tried everything to no avail. I am unable to add an account for the fax.

We bought a new HP laptop with Win 7 Pro (64 bit) preinstalled in July 2013 from a reputable (I think) online dealer. I installed the free version of Avast and initially all was well, and bootup time was very quick. After about a month or 2, I was prompted to update Avast, which I did. Immediately 2 problems cropped up. First, bootup time became very painfully slow (sometimes up to 5 minutes or more before the computer is fully operational). Once it was booted up, it did not seem particularly slow anymore. Second, we began to get the message in the lower right that "copy of Windows is not genuine (build 7601)". This message shows up only occasionally (most of the time it does NOT appear), and it does not seem to have any noticeable effect (unless it is related to the slow bootup time). The screen shows our normal wallpaper. Reading somewhere that Avast may have caused the slow bootup time, I uninstalled Avast and instead installed the free version of AVG, which I still use. But both problems persist (slow bootup and occasional "windows not genuine" message). I believe my copy of Windows is genuine, but interestingly, the computer does not have a COA sticker, at least no that I can find. We also do not have Win 7 disk from MS (only from HP). I strongly suspect that Avast caused the problem, but I don't know how to fix it. Below is the MGADiag report.

Thanks!

A:Copy of Windows is not genuine (build 7601) message after avast update

Your symptoms are typical of a race condition - most likely caused by a conflict between your AV and other software.
I would suggest uninstalling Avast completely, and running their cleanup tool.
What other AV's have been installed (even if not activated?) - most will come with a 'free' trial install of either Norton or McAfee, so it's worth running the removal tools for both.
Please do things in this order....

Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.
Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.
right-click on MCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator' to run the removal tool.

when complete, reboot.

Close all other programs, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.

After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.

Now uninstall Avast - using the normal Control Panel uninstaller.

Then
Follow the instructions for running it, and when complete, reboot the machine.

When I purchased the laptop it cames with Windows 8.1. I upgraded to an SSD myself and put Windows 8.1 back on and almost immediately upgraded to Windows 10. Sadly, I do not remember if the backlit keyboard worked on 8.1 with the SSD. I assume I am missing some driver or something simple like that but I have had my laptop identified on the HP site and installed all the drivers for it. If I recall correctly pressing F5 should do the trick but it does not. Just an FYI, when I hit caps lock and the mute button it lights up orange as it should.

Yesterday windows wouldn't get past the black log on screen. I did a restore from a couple of weeks ago and it started fine. Today, same thing. So I tried the restore again, using a slightly older restore point. It got me in and I immediately opened malwarbytes and updated the file but the system locked up before it finished. I tried opening in safe mode but it locked up again. I tried another restore but was prompted to run chkdsk /r because of freecell problem. Didn't work. I tried again and received unspecified error (0x8000fff). Not sure where to go from here. Thanks

Like the title says, something happened. I don't really know what.
I can open the store and search for apps but when I try to click on an app to see more info, I get this screen. Tried a bunch of stuff such as changing locale, fixing corrupted files and whatnot. Nothing helped. And that sucks, considering the 8.1 update will be released tomorrow and I won't be able to access it.. Any kind of help will be appreciated.
