Windows 7 - Genuine Issues Leading to Unable to Update/Install Windows

Q: Windows 7 - Genuine Issues Leading to Unable to Update/Install Windows

Hi,

I am a tech idiot and I need help. I appreciate anything anyone can do.

For several months I have been getting messages that our windows may not be genuine. It came installed on our Dell and we bought directly from Dell so I basically ignored it. Recently we got a message that it is not genuine in the bottom right corner of the screen and windows things on the screen started to look clumsy and not run right.

I tried many times to follow the validation processes to fix this but it would never complete. I had my stepson try to fix it and he is a computer pro. He tried remotely and came back saying that the windows version itself was apparently too corrupt and I needed to reinstall it from the original disk - which seems to have got lost in a move. Ugghhh. Oh yeah, several times in my efforts I was told to run chkdsk - did so and it identified different issues, seemed to fix them but made no difference in my ability to fix the validation issue.

So, I bit the bullet and went out to BestBuy and got a Windows 7 Builders Pack. I tried to update windows several times using it - no go. It got to the same point every time and quit. It basically said there was a file that was not correct and install could not be completed. So, I decided to back up and do a full install. Same result. I am at my wit's end. I ran the diagnostic below. Before I try more dramatic moves like hard drive replacement - or new computer, I thought I would give it a last go here.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Ed

A: Windows 7 - Genuine Issues Leading to Unable to Update/Install Windows

So, you`ve reinstalled windows 7, you`ve downloaded the network drivers from dell.com and installed them, and you`ve tried to activate windows with the key on your COA or the key from the system builder pack, and it will not activate ?

And you`re saying you went to BestBuy and they had a Windows 7 builder pack ????????

Amazing How much was that, if you don`t mind me asking ?

If you used that license it should say OEM System Builder, but yours says OEM SLP which means System Locked Pre-Installation. Are you sure you`re trying the right key from BestBuy ?

Hello, everybody. I've had a rather rough time, lately, with my computer. For whatever reason, I could not update my computer via Windows Update. I constantly had errors. I could not figure out why nothing was downloading, and I found no solutions to the problem. Fast-Forward to about 5 days ago, and I encountered another, more annoying issue. I started to receive a pop-up notification letting me know that my version of Windows 7 (Home Premium, 64 Bit) was Not Genuine. I wondered... how could this be? I've had my computer for just over 2 years, with Windows 7 coming pre-installed. So I checked online on sites like this one, and I found a couple different solutions. One was to try to re-input the key. That did not work. Windows 7 was appearing as 'Activated', prior, but the issue of the "Non-Genuine" pop-up had risen.
From searching up the error code, I came across this suggestion:

HTML Code:
Recreate the Licensing Store
1) Click Start button.
2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
7) Type: cd %windir%\system32

Hi, when trying to run my network troubleshooter I get 'A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from opening', so I clicked error details and managed to get somewhere on windows that told me to run the 'SFC /scannow' function in an elevated CMD prompt. So I ran it and it gets to 12% then says: 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.'

So I printed a log file and this is it:

I, again, apologize for double posting. I figure I should include the host of other issues I'm having. Maybe they can all be inter related.

-my DVD/RW drive, when connected to mother board in ANY SATA slot, causes the BIOS screen to freeze forever. I have disconnected the drive at this time while trouble shooting. I have tried known-good SATA cables so I know it's either the DVD/RW drive or perhaps a driver or mobo failure.

-I have run the memory diagnostic tool in windows. No issues were reported.

-I have NOT run memtest86 because I do not have a disk drive connected.

All of these could be a result of bad RAM.

I have purchased new RAM as a means to fix my problems. It seemed to work for 2 weeks, then the stop errors returned.

Hey all,

So I am currently reinstalling Windows on my dad's old laptop after the hard drive decided up die on us, and I stumbled on a problem that's a bit too hard for me to fix.

Namely, I am completely unable to install any Windows Update. Not even MSE will install.

I tried running SURT, but got error code 0x8000247
I also tried running SFC /SCANNOW, it ran the verification fase until 98% and then stated that there where unfixable problems.

The displayed error codes are:
In WU: "8024A000"
In SURT: "0x8000247"
Whilst installing MSE: "0x80070643".

Attached you will find CBS.log and MSINFO with my system specs.
Cheers and many thanks in advance,

That's very reminiscent of similar errors in Win7 - and I wouldn't be surprised to see it being non-genuine.
Please post an MGADiag report BEFORE doing the below potential fixes.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Storage Matrix Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here -
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&DwnldID=17882

(IATA89ENU.exe)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

If nothing has changed, try this...

Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt

NET STOP CRYPTSVC
REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2 CATROOT2OLD
NET START CRYPTSVC

once complete, leave the system alone for at least an hour to rebuild the database, then reboot, and run another MGADiag report and post the results.

If neither of them work, we'll re-evaluate.

So for about 2 weeks now I have been having this horrible issue with my Lenovo Y510p laptop where after about 20:00 to 22:00 minutes after booting or being left inactive for about 5 minutes, my computer comes to screeching halt with every program becoming non responsive. When they become non-responsive and even choosing to kill the process does nothing and I am forced to hard restart every time. At first I thought it may be a nasty virus however after scanning my computer with Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, and Hitman Trial version, I removed everything I thought to be malicious or causing issues. After all, the problem still persists and actually seems to be getting worse with boot times taking up to 15 minutes now before even getting to the login screen!
Fed up and thinking that maybe my issue is with overheating of some sort or a short in the cpu fan, I cracked it open, tested the fan to ensure its working properly, reapplied a new dab of Arctic Silver 5 to the CPU and GPU to see if maybe that would make any difference but of course... the problem persisted.
After all of my attempts, I decided to see if maybe I could rid of the issue by just upgrading to windows 10 and perhaps running a repair file. When running the Win 10 launcher I get a new issue when attempting to update "WindowsUpdate_80240FFF OR WindowsUpdate_dt000". So after running SCF to scan and attempt to fix any broker or corrupt windows file, it returns with plenty of errors that it says it is... Read more

I found some questionable files this week that had been downloaded by my son. I have since spent a great deal of time trying to scan and clean the computer. Each malware/spyware/anti-virus scanner has had varying levels of success.

It seems that the bulk of my issues have been resolved but I am still unable to install the following update from Microsoft: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2719177)

Each time I try to update it, it aborts and gives me an error code (80073712), that is not showing up in any google searches or searches of microsoft's site.

Additionally, every time I shutdown or restart the computer it shows that new updates are being installed.

I am using Windows 7 home premium 64-bit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Went through the steps of help below, but I cannot find SQL Server VSS Writer program installed in my system, please let me know where to find this program to download and install it. Due to this update issue i'm seeing the blue screen crash of the OS. Please help me out how to resolve this issue.

Windows Update error 780

If you receive error 780 when you try to install Windows updates, Windows was unable to start the SQL Server VSS Writer service. To fix this problem, follow these steps.

Check the SQL Server VSS Writer service startup type
Click to open Administrative Tools.

Double-click Services. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Right-click SQL Server VSS Writer, and then click Properties.

Hello I have recently got an email from my friend saying that I could get some free iTunes voucher codes. so I opened the program while using AVG 9.0, My computer then changed its theme to the windows 98 theme. and started to shut down but I went into the Run tool and aborted the shutdown.I then scanned with avg for viruses but I had no luck, so I installed Avast 5 then uninstalled AVG.Avast found 7 Infected files then I deleted them and was told to restart, so I did and everything was as normal. But then Windows was asking to update so I did but 3 security updates failed(Those 3 updates were the only ones there). So I tried going to the update center but this message popped up"Connection closed by remote server" Image below. While I was trying to find out why Windows Update was not working random pop-ups opened every so often. Some of the websites tried to download Viruses on opening but others were just scams. Avast stopped the viruses from downloading immediately. I then ran a boot scan with Avast and found 3 Infected Files(Deleted). Then more pop-ups opened more frequently and many websites on Google.com were redirected to the same websites as the pop-ups. I was then told to get Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, this program found 5 infected files(Deleted).Pop-up Exampleshxxp://cndot.net/?xurl=http://hytr81zz02.com/RKL2oxJe6w6qwGo093f67c7b910289f036f95a2a1501b0eb06c&xref=http://cndot.net/search.phphxxp://currenteliminator.com/?xurl=http://hytr81zz02.com/KZN1pyLD734jSDs... Hi there, as you can tell by the title, I've been having this problem for quite a while (several years now) now but haven't had the time or knew where to go to get help until now. I've tried installing both updates together and individually, but whichever way I do it the updates fail to install. I've also tried installing IE9 in the past from the Microsoft website, but that also failed to install.

Other than these two particular updates, I've never had another failed update that wasn't able to resolve itself after a computer restart for example.

I followed all the steps as per the Windows Update Posting Instructions including installing SURT from the provided link, running the SFC scan (3 times in total after being notified in the first scan that there were corrupted files that weren't fixed), and jotting down the error codes produced after the failed installations. I have attached the CBS log to this post.

The error code produced after attempting to install Windows 7 SP1 was Code 2.
The error code produced after attempting to install IE9 was Code 490.

Both errors are followed by the statement: "Windows Update encountered an unknown error"

If there's anything else you need please post and I'll post it up her ASAP. Thank for your help

EDIT: I also forgot to mention that the system I have is an Acer laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium, 3 GB of memory with NIS 2014.

So long story short i was continuously getting notification to install some particular updates again and again .

They were : KB2446704 , KB2418241 , KB2539631 . ( All of them are security updates for .net framework 2.0 sp2 and 3.5 sp1)

So whenever i installed them and restarted my pc they used to show up again . So today i decided to download Windows install clean up utility and uninstall and reinstall .net framework 2.0 sp2 .I uninstalled but when i tried to install it again i couldn't . It showed as a " setup error " .

Note :
Also i have an windows xp sp3 .

A:Can't install 3 windows update and now unable to install .netframework 2

Here's what I'd do, Caveat Emptor & all that stuff...1. Run the FixIt in KB 971187 - How to fix MSI software update registration corruption issues http://support.microsoft.com/kb/9711872. Retry the Update(s).3. If the Update(s) fail(s), proceed to Step 4.4. Download .Net Cleanup Utility: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx5. By using the Cleanup Tool, uninstall all .Net Framework entries. (You will not be allowed to remove the .NET Framework 2.0 on Vista and 3.5 on Windows 7 because they are Operating System components.)6. Reboot.7. Download and install the .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 by clicking the link below (this will also install .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2):http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=AB99342F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7&displaylang=en8. Reboot9. Check for & install all important/critical updates/security patches/etc (do not select any optional .Net updates yet) for .Net thru Windows Update.Hope this helps.

I'm unable to download Windows security updates (I use Windows XP-Pro) and I can't figure out why.

When Windows Automatic Updates attempts to download, it's unable to complete the installation. Here's a list of the updates that I was unable to unload today:
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB945185)
Security Update for Microsoft Works Suite 2005 (KB943973)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Word 2003 (KB950241)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (KB945432)
Security Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB947355)
Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB953465)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2003 (KB943985) v2
Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (KB953432)

I've tried turning off my spyware blocking software and disabled my antivirus software, too. I have no problem downloading other software from the internet.

Any ideas where I should look to for a solution to this problem?

Thanks.

Try Dial-A-Fix. Maybe your installer just needs a flush. And Dial-A-Fix is very safe and will do the job. Download here from BleepingComputer: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/160132/how-to-use-dial-a-fix-to-repair-windows-internals-problems/

Dear Subscribers and Contributors:
After three hours and probably 2 dozen reboots, I have given up and I will no longer try to update Windows 8 and will probably turn off automatic updates. It seems that I'm not alone in this issue and the internet is full of posting with frustrated clients.
Updating Win 8 has become more annoying than a root canal and at least the latter is purposeful.
It's hard to believe that Microsoft can't get its act together after all these years.
If anybody has found a viable solution to this problem (without returning to Win 7 or buying a Mac) please let me know.

Arturo

A:Unable to install any Windows 8 update

Have you tried the MS Apps troubleshooter http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=268423

Read that one guy had used it for some buggy Win 8 apps and it gave him some missing security settings that he wasn't aware existed - could be an unseemingly associated issue, but you could try the Win updates again after running it.

Someone else had found (via MS) that carrying over Office was the cause and uninstalling that resolved - but you've probably already come across these in your own search.

Also have you tried this with a clean boot ?

Hi,

I seem to have been infected by something (my guess is malware). I am unable to update Win Defender (error code 0c80072efe), and I randomly get a redirect to random software pages on firefox. I have run a whole host of programs for removal. I have run the following in both Normal and Safe Mode:

Adaware
Spybot
SuperAntiSpyware
MalwareBytes
Avast free
A squared free
HiJack This
Windows Defender

Each has caught something or another at one point and deleted the files, however the issue still remains. I have the latest HJT log as well as the latest SAS log. I can post them upon request. I am running Win XP SP3. Any help will be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance. :-)

First off, thank you to whomever helps me work this out.

The problem: I have recently inherited a Eee PC c/XP sp3 and wanted to install Openoffice on it. Attempting to install open office triggered an error, which requested I update to the latest version of IE. Upon trying to activate windows update in order to install IE and any other necessary updates I run into a series of errors preventing me from activating it. I then tried to dwnld/install IE 8 from microsofts update page, which was on 50% successful. During the install I encounter a ieseptup.exe - Bad image error which reads:

The application or D:: C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuapi.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

And that is where I am currently at.

A:Unable to activate windows update/install IE8

You do not need to update IE8 to install Open Office. Any browser Firefox, Chrome etc will work
For your other errors, go to Start/Run and type SFC /scannow put the XP CD in and it will replace any missing or corrupted files from the disc

Thanks for your time. For some time now, Vista (64-bit) has not been able to install two updates on my computer, specifically KB943899 and 943411. The two always fail. Other updates that appear will come along and install fine, leaving these two as fails everytime. The code in Window's Update is 800736CC. I click "Get Help" and see nothing helpful.

I moved onto trying stand alone updates and they fail as well. Once downloaded, I run them, and get "wusa.exe - Bad Image C:\Windows\system31\wuapi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support" followed by "Installer encountered an error: 0x800700c1 %1 is not a valid Win32 application". This is the same error for both WUs.

Did a little looking around, haven't seen anything at seems to match my problem exaclty. Did see some people with the same error message under Windows XP who were asked to Run sfc /purgecache and sfc /scannow. Did both, sfc /scannow results in a few minutes of scanning then the window closes at 100% with no information, I assume it had no problems to report.

1) Go to your "Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" folder. You should see
a bunch of folders with random looking names

2) Look in each of these folders until you find one that has a .cab file
with a name that contains the update number that failed (i.e.
Windows6.0-KB929427-x86-EXPRESS.cab or something similar). If you can't find
the cab file there should be some other file in the folder that indicates its
number.

3) Backup then delete the entire folder (the one with the random looking
name) that contains that cab file

4) Repeat for each of the updates that are failing for you

5) You might have to reboot at this point but I didn't have to

6) Either wait for the updater to notify you or manually check for updates

7) The updates should be available for download again

8) Let the updater download and apply the previously failed updates and it

Hi All,

I dont know if any one will be able to help me but thought I would give it a tryn.

Here is the story.

I have a desktop and my wife has a laptop. I, not knowing much about computers, posted a thread in the network forums to get help setting up a home network for us for when she is home.

After getting the network set up everything was working fine. My wife went to bed so I done some updates on her laptop. Windows updates and driver updates.

Well she took the laptop to work with her the next day and when she went to log in..it started loading her personal settings and then got a warning saying that windows was unable to load the stored personal profile. Possible causes are insuffucent security rights or corrupt personal profile. I posted this problem in my thread n the network forum since i thought maybe it had something to do with just setting up the home network.

Got a reply that basicly said i would need to delete and create a new profile. So i thought I would use system restore and then just go through the network setup again.

This worked fine except now I can not get ITune to load. I double click on the desktop short cut and get a message saying "ITunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the incovience. Send error repot to microsoft or dont send."

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times and still no luck getting it to work. Have tried redownloading thinking I got a bad download. Still no luck.

I recently built a new desktop. Since installing Windows 7 64bit and running the updates I seem to be getting an update loop for the following updates...

kb2894854
kb2972107
kb2972216
kb2979578
kb3023224
kb3035490
kb3037581

It always says the updates installed successfully but when I restart the updates appear in Windows Update again and do not seem to have taken affect.

Due to this I am unable to update Windows further and receive the future updates including the free Windows 10 update.

Read many articles for possible solutions, try repair tools for Windows Update, .net cleanup tools, manual installations of the updates all to no avail.

Any help regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

Did you install .net framework 4.5.2 ?

I don`t have a KB2894854 update, but I do have a KB2894844

On checking for updates instead of finding window stating Windows updates are up to date, it shows Windows 10 requesting restart to commence install. If I request check for update check, pop up displays, cannot check for updates until restart is carried out to install present updates. If I do that Win 10 will begin to install which I do not want.

Windows update history shows two statements:KB3035583 installed successful (Win 10 upgrade) ,also shows Update for Win 7 to upgrade to Win 10 Failed.

How can I, if possible get this Windows 10 up grade completely out of my system and go ahead and check for outstanding updates?

Hi guys. Another n00b with a problem, regretfully.I have a problem with Google & Yahoo being hijacked in Firefox, which is starting to get on my nerves. If I wanted to visit dodgy casino websites, I wouldn't be Googling for vacation ideas!I have tried running AVG, Malwarebytes, Spybot & even gave AdAware a shot, but this has failed to fix the problem. I have tried to update my software for new detection rules & also to check for the updates for Vista & Windows Defender, but something seems to be be blocking these programs from updating. Either they fail to connect to the net (or site), or programs will indicate there are updates & then say they cannot install.I have given up with Firefox for the time being & have have used IE to find your site through Google. So far, the problem doesn't seem to be as bad, only redirecting me or opening an unrelated pop-up for valid links about one time in five, as oppossed to virtually every time in Firefox. I have also been booted out of of IE when trying to access information on AVG's website.Prior to this problem appearing, I had a bit of trouble with my computer blue-screening a few times on start-up: switch on - loads normally - blue screen a few seconds after login screen appears - reboot - shows start mode option screen (I left it on start normally) - blue screen as above (lather, rinse, repeat). Usually after three blue screens or so, it would start working normally. Damn thing! This problem ... Read more

Hi,

I have recently done a clean Windows XP Install followed by installing Service Pack 1 then 3.

Everything was running smoothly and I was able to log into the desktop.

However when I tried to check for updates via Windows update, in Internet explorer however it always says the 'Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage'

After diagnosing the issue, it found no problems.

I can browse any other website but sometimes when I click on an item through doing a google search, it sometimes sends me to a random search engine page!!

I then installed spybot, fully updated it however it showed nothing in the scan results.

I think that my browser maybe hijacked because when I opened internet explorer today, a webpage immediately loaded up with the address:

http://chinabytemail.com/search.php

Sometimes Eset Smart Security reports that addresses have been blocked and I have attached a screenshot of the message it displays.

I have attached a hijackthis log below.

Please reply

Thanks

This happens at my house and at his house with different routers.

Try scanning your computer for viruses, I suggest a boot-scan then see if you can connect after.

Hi, I'm having a major virus/malware issue as my McAfee firewall protection stopped working suddenly. Called McAfee to reinstall the virus software and they were unable to install it. They said that since my Windows Update feature is not working (there is a big red X and updates are not downloading and installing) the McAfee installation is failing. Asked me to fix this issue first and then try McAfee installation.

Not sure what to do, any adivse? thanks.

A:Unable to install McAfee Virus software due to Windows Update error

You say your Windows Update is not working, yes? Try this Windows Update - Reset then try reinstalling McAfee. And it might not hurt to do this SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Hello, I have recently been having issues with my computer following a nasty WoW account hack. After my account was hacked I have been unable to use Windows Update and get a connection error or no result. I have tried to follow the Microsoft help and none of their troubleshooting has helped. I have ran AVG scans multiple times as well as MBAM and sometimes find infections but have them removed. Currently neither show any infections. Rkill also finds nor terminates anything but C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe. Today I am unable to connect to the internet using IE7 or connect to many of my online games, but can connect via Firefox. I have Hijackthis logs if requested. After reading this I realize I gave very little information... Sorry Please feel free to ask additional questions. A sorry story - I went to download a copy of Opera, and must have gone to a non-genuine site because all of a sudden I got a host of pop-ups, inc one telling me about a wonderful "Optimiser" product. Had a go at cleaning the virus and then performed a windows update that had come along.
Next boot i have lost my user profile..

Long story short, I think I have cleaned the virus, fixed the user profile issue, but now am lost in the non-genuine Windows nightmare. Diagnostic report below.

A:Virus, Windows update, user profile and now Genuine Windows problem

If it gives you a access denied message while trying to activate windows; you may very well need to change the permissions for your user name in order for you to have access to it as windows 7 has quirks about having access to certain items even if your user name is a administrator. As for the non genuine windows thing; I strongly advise you in the future to never go to a non genuine site for any free browser. Always type the url directly into the address bar of the browser you use as that way you will encounter less issues. To get rid of the non genuine opera copy. I would download and install revo uninstaller from the link below and that should help to get rid of any registry entries in windows as well as the program folder:

http://www.revouninstaller.com/downl...e-portable.php

download, install, and run the uninstaller from the above link then do a google search for opera browser. Thats your best bet at this point.

I have tried to install several Window updates that are supposed to fix these issues but they will not install. The SURT did run and install. When I try with other programs it says error: 800706F7

Hi,

It all started pretty innocently. I first noticed a problem when the Windows update flag had a red marker on it. So I dug a little deeper to find out that Windows update was failing. It seems it could not do the check for updates any longer for some reason. This did happen suddenly and no recent changes were made to my system before this happened. I searched this forum and googled until the cows came home and ended up trying a few solutions that seemed reasonable - Deleting the contents of Software distribution, running CHKDSK. Neither of these helped. I tried another suggestion - sfc /scannow which could not run so I tried running it from a command prompt boot up. That did not work either. So, I kept going with the suggestions I have seen. I did find one suggestion to download the latest Windows Update readiness thingy from Microsoft which made the red splat on the windows update flag go away but still could not run windows update. Always comes back with the same error 80070002.

My last resort before contacting the forum was to try a windows upgrade from the original DVD that I got when I bought the system about 2 yrs ago. Well this did not help either as it fails after going through a bunch of preliminaries and then states 'The upgrade was canceled' 'setup can't continue'. Not sure if that spelling error on the 'canceled' is a clue to something bad?

If anyone can help me sort out this fine mess, I will really appreciate it. Of note, everything else ... Read more

Hello! First post on here, and I have seen several posts that are similar to my problem but not one exactly.

I recently installed some Windows Updates, after a reboot and Windows Configured after the updates, I log in to a Black Desktop, with nothing on it, no start button or anything with
"Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine" In the right hand corner.

I purchased this copy legitimately almost 3 years ago and have done one major upgrade (2 years ago now).

I can't get to a prompt to run an MSDiagnostics.
(I have not had the time to try and boot into Safe mode or anything to see if I can get a prompt there).

After reading a similar thread, I am thinking it may be a damaged file as it froze during one of the updates and I had to perform a hard reboot.

Thanks so much!

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Have a fake Windows XP Recovery virus so I downloaded and ran Rkill to remove it, then downloaded and ran TDSSKiller to get any rootkit infections. TDSSKiller comes up clean now. I downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, but can't finish the installation to launch and update it. It tells me access denied then when I try to run it again it says it needs to reboot because it wasn't fully installed the first time. I reboot and the Windows Recovery virus starts all over. Hello! I received a very fun surprise today after church when my computer abruptly restarted. The computer wanted me to run a "disk check" saying "checking system file on C: the type of the file is NTFS". I let it run the check, and then upon loading the sign in screen a couple of different error messages appeared, most of the saying something along the lines of "C:\windows\systems32\exampleprogram is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error. So far the list of things where it says "example program is:
SmartcardCredentialProvider.dll
credui.dll (wtih system32 capitalise)
credui.dll (system32 not capitalised)
d3d11.dll
Try installing the program again using the original installation media". It is also now randomly insisting that my copy of Windows 7 is not genuine. When I click the button option to get a genuine copy of Windows since there is no other option, it immediately says "An error has occured", the code is 0x800700C1, and in the bottom right corner it just constantly displays that Windows is  not genuine, and says it's Build 7601 (whatever that means?).
It also says, when I restart, that "The exception unknown software exception (0x40000015) occured in the application at location 0x3f3397t6" and asks me to terminate, and does the same thing for similar programs.
I am unable to connect to the internet (my phone is connected so I know it's working). I had a lot of steam games downloaded who's icons are now gone, but they are apparently still ins... Read more

Hi all

Just bought a used Lenovo Thinkpad and I'm thinking about doing a fresh OS install on it to try and fix a couple of problems and also just to give me the "new" Windows feel.
Unlike my Desktop for which I have a Windows OS CD, this one doesn't have a CD. It does have the sticker on the bottom but when I used Magical Jelly Bean KF it came back with a different key #. I'm not sure if these numbers should be the same or not but I read somewhere that they're not the same, which I find it confusing. And the question is, if I want to do a fresh OS install, do I use the # on the sticker (assuming it's the original sticker)?

The other problems I'm having :

The now common problem of Windows Updates just hanging on searching for updates, even though when I first got the PC the updates seemed to work but now they just stopped all of a sudden. Tried just about everything but none has worked. SFC/scannow and chkdsk all come back ok.

The second problem is all of a sudden CPU usage is at 50-100% almost the whole time even with nothing open. I don't know but it seems this started happening after downloading Lenovo Solution Center and some other Lenovo software but I'm not sure. I already tried running only basic Windows Services but CPU is still as high. No malware or Virus either.

Anyway, that's why I just thought maybe I'd do a fresh install and see what happens but first I wanna make sure I have genuine Windows even though it does say "windows is activated"... Read more

Unable to complete genuine windows validation

Hi,
Here is the file log as per instructions.
I disabled mstray in sys32 folder, by creating empty file (old file is still there). Thet seems to do nothing.
Still after 2 minutes I'm out of any updates.
I currently don't have any anti-virus that can download in 2 minutes.
My work computer doesnot allow any downloads.
Do I have bad Windows?
Thanks,

Here is the DDS file log.

Hello all. First let me say My computer crashed over a year ago. I took it to a specialist I know, he actually installed a new motherboard for me & all. It is a Gateway Model, but basically rebuilt. The original version of winodws had XP, he installed a GENUINE version of Microsoct windows 7.

I then somehow was infected by a virus around feb 25 or so of last month. It appeared in MBAM as Trojan.BHO
I actually think the name of the BHO that gave me the trojan was VisualBee Toolbar, through google chrome.

Anyways, to make a long story short I tried to fix the issue myself. I uninstalled chrome. I ran MBAM, ADW cleaner, combofix, and a variety of other programs. I then made some progress. I still was having a black background, with This version of Windows is not Genuine at the bottom right build 7601. I had to pull some strings myself but I fixed that error. Now my computer is back to normal. I have my background again, the message is gone. I revalidated windows through microsoft's webpage and it was successful.

I now though am still experiencing a couple issues. First, I remember seeing in Combofix previously a log with LOCKED registry keys. Some of them were suspicious to me, but I'm no expert. My computer runs smoothly now, but it seems to run with a lagging effect like I have too many programs going, except I have tons of free space on my drive and barely anything on this computer. I have a 298 GB HD, only using 22.1 gigs.

Hello again sevenforums.

I'm having some issues with my partners laptop. Her ex-boyfriend upgraded her laptop with an illegal copy of Windows 7, not sure what version.

Now I was unaware of this and updated her system with Windows update, and now I get the WGA notifications after I login and the blank desktop with WGA tray notification bubbles.

My issue is that I cannot undo what has been done to this system and would like to remove WGA from the system.
But first, a few things you need to know.

1. I do not have the original disk to restore her system to Vista, like she had before.
2. We do not have the Internet at our house at this time either.

What I am asking is this. Is it possible to remove WGA from her system completely manually via deleting singular files/folders from the C:/ drive or registry?

I've looked over a few tutorials pertaining to this and they all explain about finding wgalogon.dll from the system32 folder, which I cannot find there, even with hidden folders visible. Nor can I find the wgatray.exe from startup via msconfig.exe.

It would be nice to be able to resolve this, but If you have a strict policy against tech support for illegal copies of Windows products then I completely understand, but I would like a response in any case.

Thank you.

Hi!

I've been recently infected with a virus, which with help from the malware section of this forum I've managed to clean. However, now I'm getting an "Unable to complete genuine Windows Validation" icon in the task bar. I've followed the link to the Microsoft site and followed all the 10 steps listed there, but without any success.
I'm assuming that with this problem still active I will not be able to download any updates.
Can anyone suggest what to do to clear it up?

I'm running Windows XP Version 2002 with Service pack 2 and an AMD sempron 3000.

Thanks

So I have a client PC that I don't have all the required info for (not logged in right this second) but I have the diag report.

PC says not genuine and won't update. The key that is coming up seems to be an evaluation copy. Is this just a bad update that may have caused her to become not genuine or is this a non genuine copy? Getting legal is no problem but I don't want to have her buy a new license if its just a problem and not because the previous tech gave her cracked software.

Tried to run CheckSur but it won't work. I was able to rearm the key because it acts like an evaluation key but that only helps for a couple days.

One error I was getting :
0xC004F063 computer bios is missing required license

I'll add more info when I can get back on the PC.

1. What are the system specs of trouble computer?

3. What is a evaluation copy?

Your first post states.

From the log shows
<Manufacturer>Hewlett-Packard</Manufacturer><Model>HP Pavilion dv4 Notebook

The only bios date I find in the log is.

<SMBIOSVersion major="2" minor="6"/><Date>20091210000000

My understand of these things are.
The date is Jan. 21 of 2009 for the bios.
Window 7 didn't come out until later.
I don't think that HP made a Notebook in 2009.

The log shows

A:Windows no longer genuine after update

The installed Key is NOT a retail one - it's an MAK Volume License one, which is not valid for resale. The Key has been abused, and MS have blocked it.

I would NEVER buy software in eBay - particularly Windows software - as it's known that over 50% is counterfeit.

Here's a variation on my standard spiel...

The Key in use is an MSDN Key from a not-for-resale MAK Volumme License.
Unless you are a member of the Licensed organisation, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.
You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

Just read this on Broadband Reports forum and thought I'd share this info, as many have issues with the Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage & Notification software installations now being forced upon Windows OS users during regular security updates/patches:http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,16402494~start=0#endI was wondering how long a class action suit would take. You'd think MS would have learned something from the Sony Rootkit mess.

A:Windows Genuine Advantage Update

About time. I wonder how much time and bandwidth are wasted on things the user neither needs nor wants. I wonder how much anti-piracy protection will be enough. And I wonder how long before the government plants chips in our brains to monitor us for our own good? If that seems like a stretch, think about all the video cameras on every street in London.

On another forum, I have this quote from Ayn Rand in my profile:

"Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris.
"We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's
not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power
and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only
power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals.
Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One
declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible
for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of
law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just
pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted ? and you create a nation of law-breakers
? and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system,
Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be
much easier to deal with." (Atlas Shrugged 1957)

when i bought my first computer dell inspiron 1545,3 years ago,i knew nothing about OS genuine/not genuine issue. It came with windows vista preinstalled (OEM).Into the first year, and it got infected with a virus(newfolder.exe).I took it to the place from where i bought it,and they fixed it.The guy there asked me if i wanted windows 7 to be installed on my system.I was offcourse lured(i knew windows 7 was better) and i said
yes.So he installed windows 7 ultimate on my system. It ran fine for another year ,until i installed this Update for Windows 7 (KB971033){windows activation technologies}.My deskop background went black,i started to get a 'windows not genuine' at the bottom right side and my ms office degraded to office 2003.and loads of other restrictions and problems.
it was then that i came to know that there was some 'hack'going around in'oem'based windows that times where you could get windows 7 and bypass genuininity activation. The guy had done the same thing to my windows. And i had fooolishly installed the update which caught the hack.
But i wanted to get rid of windows 7 and get back my genuine windows vista. So i thought of reinstalling. But i could not find the product key.i looked at the backside and in the battery compartment.but it is not there.Since it is oem installation, and someone said that your bios is configured with your product key ,then there must be some way to get back my windows vista back.

Having two major issues with my computer at the moment, it's not a year old yet so still under warranty until september 22nd. My first issue that began appearing a few weeks ago is when I start my computer up and go to desktop, its REALLY slow and sluggish, and i have to restart it for it to be fast again and actually normal, and two is, i started my computer up today and got this "your copy of windows is not genuine" pop up, even though I got it from the windows free upgrade last year around December. I clicked okay, and just went on with my day, I googled it and I wasn't getting any other pop up's or restrictions that it said it was suppose to do. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

A:I have a genuine copy of Windows 7 but issues with product code

Hello and welcome Ranger mate whether you have a retail or OEM the code is very difficult to read are you absolutely sure it is not just typing error - I have done that so many times the zeros can look at first glance like an O or a Q the B also can appear as an 8 etc etc flipping etc .

Microsoft in their wisdom also print these details so small and over patterns too which I think is pretty ordinary.

Hey all,

Firstly I hope i have posted this in the right forum.

As the name states I can not use any of my windows security I know this is because of a fake anti virus i had at one point, I also can't install any other virus protection or firewalls onto my computer.

I'm assuming this has to do with what the virus has done with my computers registry, correct me if I'm wrong.

I want to restore my registry back to its default I have tried the reg restore /? command in cmd but it comes up with (see attached picture) and am not sure what this means or for the next step for me to take to continue the command.

Is there any down side to restoring my registry to its default as well?

I bought a brand new Asus N53S i7 with Windows 7 on it 2 years ago. The same minute I bought it I bought a Windows Professional anytime upgrade. It installed fine. I recently had an optical drive issue, I backed up my data and reinstalled windows from the partition, and entered the anytime upgrade key. Everything seemed fine. My computer began all the windows updates (over 100 of them). Everything was fine until after about a week of updates, it said my windows is not genuine. I've looked on the internet for solutions, called tech support, they agreed I had a valid key then hung up on me with no solutions. I looked here and many had the same problem but had pirated software or started with xp. I am the original owner of this laptop and I purchased the upgrade myself when I bought the computer. I also read through the MS support on the issue here:

~the plug and play service on my laptop is "not defined" as they say it should be. I also found someone that said deleting and re-installing ms windows update KB971033, then trying to validate would solve the issue, It didn't. I'm going to bed it's 5am. I'll check in as soon as I get a reply, I'm sure it might take a few hours at least. Cheers for any suggestions.
I'm sure if anyone can solve this issue, you guys can.

Windows Genuine and Activation Issue Posting Instructions

Okay, so I've got two problems here. The first is that my windows keeps randomly deciding not to be genuine. I run notepad or any other default windows program and a box comes up saying windows isn't genuine and gives me a link to go make my windows genuine. I go to the link, (which takes me to a microsoft web page, I don't remember the exact url, but when it happens again, I'll make sure to note it down so I can post it here, if you want) and I download a windows activator program thingy, which then makes my windows genuine again and all's well. I've noticed that, when the problem happens, if I pull up system information (windows key + pause) I see that windows activation status is not available and my windows key is not available, but once I run the activator, then they both go back to normal. It's happened about 4 times, now. It doesn't cause any major issues for me, but it does worry me greatly.

My second problem is really confusing and I've asked a few other computer savvy people I know for help, but none seem to know what's going on. When I try to run any games in windowed mode, or even when I watch movies, I get triangular shapes on the screen. The shapes seems to be sections of the video that lag behind by a frame or two. There's nothing visually there, it's just that sections of the screen seem to lag behind, kind of like when you try to run a game on a really old system that can barely handle it, but the games don'... Hi,

My parents PC has run into some issues with genuine advantage (it is genuine - has been running fine for a year or two) and in attempts to fix that i've caused more issues (i know, i know ). Please note this is my parents PC, not mine - specs are not per my profile and it might take a while to get back to you at times.

Updates are set to notify, but not install. When i try to "Check for updates" i get the error:

Windows Update cannot current check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart the computer.

I also cannot update AV definitions in MSE.

Needless to say, a restart doesn't resolve. Firewall is TinyWall and has been opened/switched off at times to see if there was a communication block but all looks ok there. Internet connection is also fine.

I assume the Genuine issue is preventing updates, although 'service not started' is a mystery. When i try to "Resolve Online Now" (activation) i get an error running/installing the downloaded file WindowsActivationUpdate.exe:
"Update installation failed. Error information - 0x80072EFD (0)"

I don't know if this is helpful but i've seen it be asked for often enough so i've included it. MGADiag says (removed license/hash):

What problems did your parents' pc have? What have you done to try to fix it?
What errors does the pc have now?

I was having an issue with Windows reporting as not genuine, and found some advice online to uninstall and reinstall KB971033. I uninstalled it fine, but when trying to reinstall it, it is failing with error code 800706F7. This is a volume license Windows 7 install, installed with a valid MAK.

I'm sure the two issues are related.

From some research online I have tried to run the Windows Update Readiness Tool to no success.

I have uploaded the CheckSUR.persist.log file to this post, and here is my MGA Diag Report:

So I upgraded my asus p8z68-v lx bios recently to version 4003 and now my desktop is displaying the annoying messages. I also attached the other two HDDs to the SATA ports that were unplugged and might have moved some of the sata cables around in the process. I had this installed by a network admin and I'm pretty sure the windows 7 isn't a fake. It was all working fine until I decided to upgrade my bios and some drivers, then that showed up. Also I don't have a key for it. Any help on this is much appreciated.

My computer ran some updates overnight this week, and ever since then i've been getting a popup telling me my copy of Windows is not genuine. I bought the computer a year or two ago with Windows preinstalled and haven't made any changes to my system recently. I'm still showing that my Windows is activated in Properties, but i keep getting the popup, and running the validation link from the popup itself at microsoft.com results in it just sort of...dangling there spinning, and nothing happens. Any ideas?

I've had this disk for probably 3 years or so - pretty sure it came with my custom built PC (from Silent PC). Its worked flawlessly. Now last night my Windows went through an automatic update (as they do) and suddenly I'm getting this 7601 Build Windows not Genuine.

I've got the disk and the code right here, but when I put the disk in it fails as it says the disk is older than the version currently on the computer.

I've got another windows 7 disk that I think came with a dell machine, but haven't tried to use that - I figure it will fail.

I've copied and pasted this MGADiag info below - any ideas? Or whats a good number to call MSoft to resolve?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi All,

I was hoping someone could give me a hand on a recent issue with my Dell Studio XPS 1645 (laptop).

To give you some background, I purchased this machine from Dell a little over a year ago – it came pre-installed with Windows 7 Premium Home Edition. Since that time the computer has been terrific (aside from running a bit too hot for my liking), and I really have experienced no performance issues.

A week ago Sunday (7/31) I was poking around my taskbar and noticed that I had some updates to install from Microsoft – I always thought these were automated but apparently the service pack isn’t – I have no clue how long that potential update was sitting there, could have been a while. Regardless, I decided to upgrade to “service pack 1” and for about a week nothing dramatic happened.

However, beginning yesterday my computer started to behave a bit odd, almost as if I had a virus. My Internet stopped working, I was getting random errors when attempting to open files. I was getting absolutely pummeled with windows errors (i.e not genuine, windows has stopped working etc. etc.). I was ultimately met with a flashing white screen and computer crash. I attempted a re-start and was met with a blue screen, safe mode wouldn’t work, and ultimately after a couple tries it just seemed to randomly start. On that re-start though, I was met with text at the bottom right hand of my screen that said Windows 7 Build 7601 not genuine.

Luckily I... Read more

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

For a start, I'd try uninstalling SP1 first to see if that cures the problem.

In any case, I think you'll need to contact Dell as Microsoft won't offer support for an OEM version of Windows.

Hi,

My Dad recently upgraded to a laptop with Windows 7 but misses playing his old games which are not compatible. I have successfully rebuilt his old vista laptop on Windows XP (best compatibility) but it requires activation and the code I have won't work.

He owns the Windows XP as it came with an even earlier laptop but I think the automated system can detect it has been used on the earlier computer.

Do any of you know how I go about getting Microsoft to recognise that he is no longer using the old laptop and instead wants to use Windows XP on this newer model?

He owns the licence for the software so surely he has the right to (solely) install it on any machine he wishes?

The laptop which I have installed XP is a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo LI 1718.
The Windows XP version he has comes without any service packs (it's that old!) but I have installed all the updates up to and including SP3.

If you need any other information to answer this let me know, i can provide a dxdiag report etc.

Thanks to all who can help me out!

This happened relatively out of the blue:

i was trying to get drivers for my printer. After restart, screen went black. I restarted in safe mode with netwking to find out what to do. So I eventually found out my graphics card had no driver; it had a generic vga adapter. So I search for my graphics card to find it is an Nvidia GeForce fx 5200 and I get the drivers for it. I restart in normal mode: no success. restart in safe' with net' . starts and am notified that drivers have installed. Now on next restart in normal mode, application error 0xc150002...press ok. Then i get a message in the bottom right hand corner that says 'windows is not genuine build 7600'...
I have seen how to change it with/without cmd, but either requires normal mode.

So how do I re enter my product key?

Do you know how to remove windows genuine install message?

It pops up everytime I start my computer in the middle of my screen...
I must click Cancel to close it (cancel installation of wga, cause this pop up offers me installation). It's so annoying.

I don't wanna install it, it was installed on my computer already and it was hard to completely remove it!
I've must downloaded it with my updates for windows or someone else did, who uses my computer...

A:[SOLVED] Windows genuine install message

WGA was probably downloaded with a normal Windows update. Windows Update installs the WGA as part of the standard update package.

It will keep popping up until you install it. Is there a reason why you don't want it installed? If your copy of windows is legit, there's no reason not to have it installed.

You could always install it, and then have it removed. There's a ton of patch programs out there that will remove that portion of the update. Do a google search for WGA remover.

Hi, my problems began with a reoccurring failure to successfully install Windows Security updates. I could manually install some, but the rest refused to install. I kind of ignored it at that point. Then I started getting a pop up in the last few days saying "This computer is not running genuine windows 7". The link the pop-up sends me to just has a page selling Windows 7 on it.

Interestingly enough...

One of my co-workers brought to my attention the new windows update (KB905474) was coming out soon and it will cause illegal copies of XP to notify the user that it may not be genuine. While we all try and use legal software, it can often be difficult in a work environment to do so. Concerned about this, i decided to check my WSUS server for the mysterious update.

After going through it several times i could not find it, but my test computer group (that i test updates on) recieved the update! I have searched everywhere and I can't find where it is getting that update from. Is this proof of microsoft's 'phone home' updating even though the computer is on a domain that uses a GPO to point Windows Update to the WSUS server?

Has anyone else seen this?

A:Windows 7 Suddenly Not Genuine, Can't Install Vefification Tool

Hi Encryptonite,

You are using a Dell key on a retail motherboard, and you do not have the required SLIC table.
