Windows Genuine Issue, It says Genuine then say it is not, over & over

Q: Windows Genuine Issue, It says Genuine then say it is not, over & over

My HP Pavilion dv6 laptop suddenly has decided Windows is not Genuine. I put in the number on the bottom of the laptop and it says it is verified and good. But then after a while it goes back to saying it is not Genuine. I am out of the country at the moment, and I need to fix this in the meantime. I do Slui 3 and fix it, because if I try to go online to do this it won't finish it up, it just sits there loading. I haven't had issues with this laptop at all otherwise. Been using it for years. Bought it brand new. I do have virus protection but I am beginning to wonder if this is a virus? Or something like that? You would think that after entering the right number and getting the yes this is valid that it would be fine?

A:My Genuine activation issue although I have a genuine license

Interesting.
The error message
Notification Reason: 0xC004F063.
...is a pretty specific one, and almost always means that the machine has been reinstalled using media other than the manufacturer's Recovery media, while still using the manufacturer's OEM_SLP Key instead of the COA Key.

For what version and edition of Windows is the machine licensed - according to the COA sticker on the case (or inside the battery compartment)

There was a 5 page thread on trying to downgrade from Ultimate to Win 7 Pro but I thought I should start a new thread. I have a thead on a different forum but was hoping someone here might know the answer.

Users computer says Windows is not genuine, was 7 pro, in Sept 2013 we upgraded to Ultimate to use Bitlocker. System bought from Dell, used Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate. I spent ages on phone with Microsoft today, they have completely agreed both copies are valid, and the computer is saying they're not, in error, they will not admit that it's a Windows Update that caused it likely.

They took over remotely, and 30 minutes later gave up, none of the methods worked. She then advised me to BUY a copy of 8.1 and do a clean install. I don't want 8.1, if we have to reinstall I'd rather do Win 7 Pro again(same valid code) and then up to Ultimate again(same valid code), or go to Win 10 when it comes out. Of course you can't upgrade a "non genuine" copy of Windows 7 to win 10, even if it is in fact genuine.

We don't want to have to reinstall. MS also told me I need to downgrade to Win 7 Pro, put in the code, then upgrade to Ultimate. To do that they said I have to do a clean install. I've seen all the links to Windows Downgrader but we aren't exactly thrilled to be advised to use a 3rd party app. I have not tried the registry suggestions yet, I'm not particularly comfortable dealing with the registry. Two questions.

If MS had been willing to just give me a new U... Read more

Hi

I have an ASUS notebook (U31F i5 with 4 GB mem) which until recently I used only occasionally. It has Legit Office 2010, but no CD/DVD drive. My desktop hard disk crashed in a big way so I am using the notebook as my main computer.

It has just recently started throwing up messages that my Windows Homw Premium (x64) is not genuine. It is gebuine OEM and activated (back when I got the notebook), and I have not tampered in any way.

I have had a look at some other threads on this forum on this issue, and so have dowloaded and run MGAdiag.exe, but to my inexpert eye, it appears to report everything OK.

I have pasted text in below, and would welcome more expert advice as to whther I have missed something, and if not, what should I do next?

regards

PB

Hello and thanks in advance to whoever can help me.

A couple of days ago I was downloading some video files and since I wasn't paying attention I clicked an .exe instead of a video file. I know this makes me the idiot, but I have beaten myself up over it for a while and cannot fix this myself so I am now humbly coming forward with my idiocy to get my Toshiba Qosmio back up and health. So here's the deal:

I got the popup that I wasn't running a genuine copy of Windows 7 64 bit Pro (which I am...came from the factory). Tried to resolve it online and the only answer I got was to buy another copy of Windows, which I don't really want to do. Then I tried to run Windows Update and I get random error codes as to why I can't. I tried a system restore and got a message that there is an error on my hard drive, to run chkdsk. Tried that, nothing. Even when Windows rebooted it wouldn't let me. So then I boot towards the safe mode menu and see an option for Windows Repair, choose that and click on system restore. I pick a restore point a week or so ago and try to restore. Negative. Got a message that not only could it not restore but now that restore point was damaged (hooray). Tried rebooting to that screen and all I get is black: pointer works with touch pad but not mouse. Tried booting into safe mode and I couldn't get explorer.exe to run and had no icons. Then rebooted to Last Known Good Configuration which is where I am now.

I have a MSDNAA account where I downloaded my copy of Windows 7 Pro, so its genuine, but when my computer is idle for sometime, in the lower right corner of the screen, sometimes appears the "not genuine" text with "evaluation copy etc etc". I go to Control Panel - System, then windows activates itself again, turning genuine again. This happened two times, yesterday and today. Is this a bug or what?

Hello, I am using an Acer Aspire 5738G, which originally came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Later I got the free Windows 7 Home Premium update disc and never encountered any problem.

But since the last 1 month or so, I've been getting this 'Windows not genuine' message on a random basis. Microsoft Security Essentials says that it will disable itself within 30 days if the issue is not resolved. When I click on 'Resolve issue', an IE window is opened and takes me to Microsoft's website. When I do all the steps explained, everything goes back to normal and my Windows is again considered as genuine.

I am a bit worried, although I can always solve the problem, it still irritates me when I see the 'Windows not genuine' message. What could be the cause of the problem and what is the solution?

Thanks in advance.

Hello all, and thank you for the oppurtunity to post.
I got a Pop-up, titled Microsoft Security Essential, which states I am infected by a Trojan. At the same time I was surprised to see a Windows Genuine notification , which stated that because I have made major changes since I first loaded Windows XP Pro, I now have to reactivate windows. Is this for real? The Microsoft notice will not go away no matter what I do, it sits in the middle of the screen and resists all efforts to close. If this is a Virus I am sure I will need Help in removing. Thanking you in advance,

A friend of mine has a Windows XP Home Edition machine running Service Pack 2. She called me along this afternoon because she has been having problems with the machine for several weeks! Anyway this machine runs Norton Internet Security Center which was up to date as of a few weeks ago, but because of her problem it no longer seems able to complete its update process although she has 322 days left of her subscription. I tried several times but each time the update process terminated after doing some of the downloads. There is also an icon in her system tray area (right hand side) which refers to the non-genuine windows message and tells her to clickon it to resolve the non-genuine Windows problem.

The problem she has is that on boot up she gets a message saying that her version of Windows is not genuine (it is since it was supplied with the machine 4 years ago) and what is more it talks about Windows XP Professional whereas she has Windows XP Home. In addition to these messages which give her the option to resolve the problem now or later, she gets pop-ups at various times saying that her copy of Windows is not genuine, maybe counterfeit etc.

In addition when these problems started to occur she says she was no longer able to connect to the internet (she has a router and broadband) - I noticed that her connection was disabled so I re-enabled this and we can now connect to the Internet.

She also has problems with IE (think it is V8) whereby it comes up with an error aft... Read more

Dear all,

Based on Seagate Technical Support in response to the noises produced by Momentus XT, the recommendation is to do a fresh installation of Windows on the drive. However, I do not have the original Windows DVD shipped with my computer when purchased. Note: this drive is the upgraded drive not the original one.

Regarding this, is there any Windows Genuine issue if I download the Windows, install it on my system, and register with the product key came along with my laptop?

Thank you in advance for response,

A:Windows Genuine Issue

Hi MilkyWay,

No, there is no issue with doing that as long as its genuine product key. However, if this is an OEM installation of Windows, then some of the pre-installed drivers will be lost during the installation. These can usually be downloaded and installed as normal. I recommend making a note of all your devices before you start, so you know which drivers you will need.

Before you proceed, run this tool so we know what your hardware is, and it will give others a chance to go over my suggestions in case I have missed anything:

A:Windows non-genuine and activation issue

The installation is showing signs of having been hacked by installation of RemoveWAT.

Download WATFix - make sure that you UNTICK the box for the 'download manager, and click on the link on the left of the page, not the big shiny button on the right (which is an ad for the download manager!!) - and use that - extraxt the .exe file, and run it, then reboot.

Post back with another MGADiag report, and we'll then see what we can do.

Hi! I found your forum while trying to find a fix for why my version of Windows 7 was suddenly not genuine after having this computer for 8 months.

I bought the computer from TigerDirect in January 2012. It is a CyberPower Inc computer running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit edition. On Sunday, my roommate turned the computer on to have the validation error message. At the same time, Windows has 4 critical security updates it is trying to make but keeps failing on - 3 are security updates (KB2705219, KB2712808, and KB2731847) and one for IE9 for windows 7 64 bit systems (KB2722913). Every time we turn the computer off and on, it tries to make these updates and fails.

I ran malwarebytes to be sure I don't have malware causing the problem. I tried to do a system restore, but the system fails every time it tries. There was a thread that suggested trying rsop.msc, but my computer doesn't have that available. another suggestion looked at the registry editor users/1-5-20 (something like that), but that didn't work either. I saw a third suggestion on deleting a certain update, but can't find that one now that I restarted my system.

I ran the MGADaig.exe tool and got the results below. One interesting thing I noted is that when the tool ran, the product key listed agreed with the product key on the service tag on the side of the computer; however, when I go to control panel/system security/system and look at the key listed there, it doesn't agree. The system will not let me chang... Read more

Hi,

Have you tried this suggestion from Noel:
Windows 7 all of a sudden saying it's not genuine.

Background information:

I have an old laptop that came with Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit. My laptop had a ton of junk on it. So I decided to do a factory reset and start all over. This was about a month ago.

The sticker on the bottom of the laptop was no longer readable. I used a Key Finder program to grab the Windows key.

I received no Windows installation disc with the laptop. I downloaded the Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit ISO from digitalrivercontent.

I installed Windows. Everything was fine until yesterday. I had shut off my computer so Windows updates would install. I rebooted my laptop and got the following error message:

Error Code 0xC004F063
The software licensing service reported that the computer BIOS is missing a required license.

In the lower right-hand corner of my monitor is the message:
Windows 7
Build 7601
This copy of Windows is not genuine

I searched Google and read the forums to find out how to resolve the issue. I was quite surprised to read on the forum how it is assumed that the Windows software must be an illegal copy or that the user must have entered the wrong key. Those are very bold and erroneous assumptions to make. While it may be true I got my copy of Windows from Microsoft's digitalrivercontent website, I purchased a Windows key when I bought my laptop, I did not receive a Windows installation disc with my laptop, and no one informed me that if I did a factory reset that I would have to buy Windows all over again. I should be able to ... Read more

A:Windows Genuine and Activation Issue

Computers that come pre-installed with Windows from large manufacturers usually come with two Product Keys.

OEM SLP: This is the key that came in Windows (from the factory). It works by connecting to a BIOS flag (the SLIC table) found only on computers from that Manufacturer. It also checks for the existence of proper matching licenses in the OS itself. Once it sees both, it self-activates every time the machine is rebooted.

COA SLP: This is the key seen on the sticker located on the side, bottom or in the battery compartment of your machine. This key is for use if the OEM SLP self-activation stops working for whatever reason.

The Key in your report is the OEM_SLP Key - which requires that it be installed using the Recovery media.

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.
You may need to activate by phone.

Noeldp,
Here is the new thread for my windows 7 not genuine. Background info: Used your fix from my first post to fix the issue and it worked. After downloading Platform Update for Windows 7 x64-Edition (KB2670838) the computer rebooted and the issue came back again. I ran your suggestion and uploaded the root nt report. Also reposting the MGAD report that I posted earlier.
Ran sfc/scannow: report no integration issues.

Do you want me to run System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems?

Uninstall the KB2670838 - MS have admitted it's giving problems in a number of machines, and are working on a revision.
Hide the update for a while
Then post a new MGADiag report, and see what the notification looks like.

On a computer running Microsoft Windows non-core edition, run 'slui.exe 0x2a 0xC004F012' to display the error text.
Error: 0xC004F012

This is always an awkward one to diagnose
Let's start with the basics...

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at the next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Upload the CBS.log file (compressed, please!) to your reply - also post a new MGADiag report.

Seems this is a common problem. Tried several things, and tried MS support, to no avail. Figure I should ask before I just start over with the original image I burned.

I bought an Asus G73 laptop from Best Buy roughly 1 1/2 years ago. In the past 2 months, Windows has yelled at me for not having a genuine copy (which I do). Starting off:

Hello!

I am getting the famous 'your copy of Windows is not genuine.' I followed the instructions in the other post and here is my MGADiag report is below.

I noticed a few weeks ago in my Windows Update log that important updates have been failing for some time now. The Windows version I have was installed when I bought the machine new from Dell, and I believe I have a valid key.

I obviously want to avoid a complete reinstall of Windows 7 if possible. Can anyone spot what I might be able to do?

Thanks for any help!

After reading multiple topics and trying lots of different solutions for the 'Windows Genuine problem', I am following NoelDP's request by starting a new thread.

Since 2 days I'm getting a message, displayed at the right bottom side of my desktop, saying my version of Windows 7 Ultimate isn't genuine. Besides this I'm getting the occasional 'You may be a victim of software counterfeiting' message aswell. I have followed every instruction, I think. But after 'regfixing' I get an error message (see attachment 'Register-editor error message').

This here remains the problem:

Code:
C:\Windows\system32>reg query HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11cf-A4B0-0
0AA004A55E8}\InprocServer32

(standaard) REG_SZ C:\Windows\system32\vbscript.dll
ThreadingModel REG_SZ Both
C:\Windows\system32>
I have attached a Windows diagnostics report aswell. Don't know if it's needed or not. I hope the problem description is crystal clear. Now for the answer... Thanks in advance.

Hi,

This is really Noel's area of expertise, but I'll try help out with the obvious. The error code below (if I recall correctly implies that WAT is not validated properly).

Code:
Validation Code: 0
Cached Online Validation Code: N/A, hr = 0xc004f012
Please follow the instructions in this link to run the online validation, and report back the results please:

What is validation and how does it work? - Microsoft Windows

If this doesn't help, then the fault lies here with Windows 7 not being able to find the .vbs, as you already determined, and we will leave this for Noel to analyse and suggest a fix:

Hi,

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Used since Win7 came out with no genuinity issues until now.

A short while after the SP1 update I started getting popups claiming my Windows is not genuine. I know for a fact that my Windows is genuine.

Properties show my Windows is activated. I have activated both online and by phone yet the popup still keeps appearing. The MGA diagnostics show that there is a tampered file and apparently it is causing the validation to flag my system as not genuine:

Code:

Admin Service: Registered, Version: 7.1.7600.16395
HealthStatus Bitmask Output:
Tampered File: %systemroot%\system32\slcext.dll|slcext.dll.mui
I have tried to fix this for a while now. The file seems to be associated with MUI packages and Something called Vistalizator.

I have checked the registry and there are no MUI's. US-EN only. I do not have anything called Vistalizator.

I am rather frustrated with googling in microsoft pages as they all lead to the Vistalizator and MUI packs but I don't have them so the fix does not apply.

Thanks.

I've recently "inherited" a laptop from my father, who on a whim decided that the 17" screen (which was essential in the previous purchase) was now too big and he needed something compact to travel. Only problem is that he is dedicated to the cause of causing computer problems, and now I've got this Genuine Error popping up. I purchased the computer (online) for him with Windows, and it has a Windows sticker on the bottom - it is a genuine copy.

There are no recovery disks of any kind (who knows where they have been lost to) available.

Windows Genuine and Activation Issue Posting Instructions

   Information
This is a set of posting instructions to use so that you can get better help here at SevenForums.com when you have a Windows non-genuine and/or activation issue.

Here's How:

1. Click on either of the Download buttons below to download the MGADiag Tool from Microsoft.
2. Save the MGADiag.exe file to your desktop and run it.

3. If prompted, click on Run and Yes (UAC).

4. Click on the Continue button. (see screenshot below)
5. When the report is finished, click on the Copy button. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: Often, when clicking the Copy button, you may get an error message. Just ignore the error. All it means is that the backup copies of certain files couldn't be saved to disk (in the root directory). The Copy process will still work, and pasting to your post will still function as expected.
6. Right click on a empty area in your post here at Seven Forums, and click on Paste to place a copy of the MGADiag report into your post.
NOTE: The MGADIAG report does not contain any sensitive or personal information, and is best posted un-edited for us to be able to help.

7. In your post, select (highlight) all of the MGADiag report that you just pasted, and click on the code box # toolbar icon to wrap the report in a code box when posted. (see screenshot below)
8. Add any additional details you like about your issue before or after the code wrapped MGADiag report... Read more

You have a Trusted Store Tamper - often caused by malware...
Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from Malwarebytes | Free Anti-Malware Detection & Removal Software - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM Premium' at the end of the installation - and update it, then run a full scan in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.

Quarantine everything it finds

Then...

Please first try recreating Licensing Store.

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt
Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

net stop sppsvc
(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
REN tokens.dat tokens.bar
net start sppsvc
slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.
You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.
If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report.

(Note: the Line 'CD %win......\SoftwareProtectionPlatform' is all on one line - it may be broken in the Forum listing)

Hi,

My parents PC has run into some issues with genuine advantage (it is genuine - has been running fine for a year or two) and in attempts to fix that i've caused more issues (i know, i know ). Please note this is my parents PC, not mine - specs are not per my profile and it might take a while to get back to you at times.

Updates are set to notify, but not install. When i try to "Check for updates" i get the error:

Windows Update cannot current check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart the computer.

I also cannot update AV definitions in MSE.

Needless to say, a restart doesn't resolve. Firewall is TinyWall and has been opened/switched off at times to see if there was a communication block but all looks ok there. Internet connection is also fine.

I assume the Genuine issue is preventing updates, although 'service not started' is a mystery. When i try to "Resolve Online Now" (activation) i get an error running/installing the downloaded file WindowsActivationUpdate.exe:
"Update installation failed. Error information - 0x80072EFD (0)"

I don't know if this is helpful but i've seen it be asked for often enough so i've included it. MGADiag says (removed license/hash):

Okay, I am not sure where to start. A couple weeks ago, my Hard Drive crashed. Running diagnostics, it failed the tests. I could still access the files/boot from it momentarily, so I was hopeful for recovering files that had not been backed up by my NTI external drive.

I got a new Hard Drive, replaced the old one, and did a restore off of the NTI backup drive. Upon booting, I got the light blue screen with the "this is not a genuine copy of Windows 7" message on the bottom right. I called Microsoft and they apparently only employ nitwits there because the guy was unable to help me solve the issue. He said I basically needed to purchase another copy sense the copy I had was still being used on the old hard drive. According to my research, that is incorrect.

Either way, I decided to attach the other hard drive and still boot from the new one. This works. I am able to use windows on the new hard drive, and obviously access the files on the old one. I figured that since I am here, I would go through and move files that were not backed up to the new hard drive, and also run virus scans and such.

I noticed that Avira was not active, and upon trying to open it, I got the message "exception unknown software exception (0x40000015) occurred in the application at (location 0x734a7676). So, technically, I am unable to use Avira as a firewall. I am using it to scan the hard drives though, which works fine.

Upon clicking around more, it seems that my computer is running off of the old hard drive. Right clicking on desktop files and "my picture" and such and selecting properties shows that they are located on drive /C, not my new drive /D. I specifically selected the new hard drive in the boot menu, so I am unsure why my old drive booted instead. It seems the longer I spend trying to figure things out, the more confused I get. =(

I recently downloaded SP1 to my Windows 7 machine and shortly thereafter a message appeared on the lower right hand corner indicating that "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of windows is not genuine". I bought this machine used and so I verified the key with Microsoft and it is a genuine OEM key but try as I may there is nowhere to enter a product key. I go to start-computer-right click- and at the bottom under Windows Activation it states Status: Not Available - Product ID: Not Available and NO place to enter a product key. Also all of the DOS commands that I can find on the Net do not seem to work either. When I contact Microsoft support they are no help at all and tell me I need to do a CLEAN install with the disk that came with my machine. The only problem is that no disk came with this machine. I have also been told by "Tech support" since I have an OEM key I just cannot use ANY install win 7 disk. I have a TON of Apps. loaded on this machine and it TICKS me off that I have a VALID OEM key and seemingly no way to enter or fix which I suspect is a Microsoft bug to begin with as they have overshot to prevent piracy. Someone Please help!

A:Win 7 Prof not genuine and cannot enter genuine OEM product key

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

I had a non-genuine copy of Ms Office installed on my computer, and have now purchased a genuine copy. Uninstalling the old (non-genuine) copy is impossible because it doesn't have an uninstaller, and it doesn't even show in Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs. So I just installed my genuine copy in a different folder in Program Files, so that the non-genuine copy wouldn't interfere with the newly installed genuine copy.

The problem is that even though I tried opening Ms Word or Excel directly from the newly installed folder and not from the old link to the old version, it still gives me a message (like before) that says "Get Genuine Office - This copy of Office is not genuine".

How do I get rid of the old (non-genuine) Ms Office if I am unable to uninstall it? Please don't tell me to work on the registry - I don't want to touch the registry because I'm not a computer pro, and I won't know what I'm doing. I just want to get rid of the message that says get genuine Office.

I am using Windows XP Home.

Thank you

Greetings.

I have on my laptop (a thinkpad, from Lenovo) Windows 7 Professional, obtained via something called "MSDN Alliance" and my university.

A few weeks ago, I finally had the opportunity to upgrade my hard drive. Thus, I placed the new disk in a USB case, plugged it in via USB, and performed a disk clone via a software from a company called EASUS.

I then removed the old disk, placed the new one in its location (that is, inside the laptop), and removed the USB equipment. Good as new, I though.

And everything appears to be working fine -- except the "nag screen" that seemingly randomly pops up out of nowhere and tells me that I am using a (I don't recall the text exactly at this moment) less that legal/legitimate installation of Windows.

I can check if Windows has been activated -- and it has (of course, I did this after having installed it) (i.e., on the "old" disk).

I have tried searching for solutions, however I only find issues when similar clonings have changed the drive letters.

This is not the issue here, i.e. the "Windows partition" is still "C:".
Any suggestions?

Thank you
Olof Antonsson

A:Post-cloning of OS hard drive Windows Genuine nag screen issue

You didn't happen to use EASEUS Partition Master to perform the cloning, did you? I just used it to clone my own system HD and it changed the volume ID of the clone without me asking it to do so. So I used another tool that actually performed an exact, raw clone without any changes.

You would need to find out the volume ID of your original HD and set the volume ID of the new drive to match it. One tool which can do this easily is MBRWizard! - The MBR Management Utility

Starting today, seemingly out of nowhere, my custom Windows 7 desktop PC started giving me a message along the lines of "you may be a victim of software counterfeiting," asking me to validate windows, then asking me to reinstall windows. I got this PC less than 1 year ago with a brand new Windows 7 key. Up until this time, I haven't had many major issues crop up, but some minor things have had me suspicious, and even more so now.

I ran Microsoft Security Essentials (detected/removed nothing) and Malwarebytes (removed/detected some PUPs but no frank malware). I attempted to backup my computer today using Windows backup, but it was unable to complete fully due to some corruption (I believe is what it said) in the C drive.

Since this PC is less than one year old, I am hoping it's not hardware failure. If there's anything that could be done before I have to throw in the towel and get a new hard drive, then I need some help!

Whatever logs and specs you need, please guide me and I'll be happy to provide.
Thanks.

Rerun MBAM after allowing it to update. Post the results of the scan using the instructions below.
Once adware and malware are eliminated as the cause of the problem then instructions will be given for trouble shooting and repairing

After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.

Once MBAM opens, when it says Your databases are out of date, click the Fix Now button.
Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box for Scan for rootkits.
Click the Scan tab at the top of the program window, select Threat Scan and click the Scan Now button.
If you receive a message that updates are available, click the Update Now button (the update will be downloaded, installed, and the scan will start).
When MBAM is finished scanning it will display a screen that displays any malware that it has detected.
Click the Remove Selected button.
MBAM will now delete all of the files and registry keys and add them to the programs quarantine. When removing the files, MBAM may require a reboot i... Read more

Sorry about posting my request elsewhere.

Here's my dilemma: I had a desktop system where I virtually replaced all components except my Intel SSD (I only have Win 7 & "programs" installed on this drive). My old OS was Win 7, 32 bit. Since I got a nice 64 bit motherboard/CPU, I purchased Win 7, 64 bit. When I got my new system started, I had all kinds of problems (so many, I can't remember all the details). When I finally got the 64 bit version of Windows 7 to install, it never did ask me to enter the Product Key!?!? It registered/kept the product key from the 32 bit version! After several weeks of trouble-free operation, I now have the "black desktop" with "Windows 7, Build 7601, This copy of Windows is not genuine." Every-time I restart windows, it want me to enter a new product key and "I know" that I'm entering the correct characters.

The following quoted info seemed like a good place to start so I followed this information:

A:Issue: Windows 7, Build 7601, This copy of Windows is not Genuine

You say that you purchased Windows 7 - where from?
The installed License Type is COA_SLP, which is not available to the general public, and can only be sold pre-installed by a major manufacturer. If you did indeed purchase this retail, then it's a counterfeit.

Does the Product Key in the report agree with the one from your purchase?
If not, use the option to change the product Key to the proper one.

I have a laptop purchased several years ago off e-bay with Win 7 installed and it worked fine for well over a year but then I got the " This in not a genuine win 7 blah blah and black screen. It was a little late to return the computer like over a year or more so I have just been using it with ugly accusatory messages and black screen! Ok Microsoft you win, I bought a legit new two DVD 32 and 64 bit Win 7. Since the machine came with the Ultimate version I bought the ultimate version.

Here is what I want to know. How do I substitute this genuine version for my bad version without losing my other programs? I don't want to start all over as I have a whole lot of programs that I want to keep as is. Can I do that?

A:Installing Genuine win 7 over non genuine version

Hello w6k and welcome to Seven Forums.

If everythig is working OK on your computer it should be just a simple matter of changing the invalid Product Key with the PK from your newly purchased disk.

I have a laptop with Windows 7 Home Basic OEM pre-installed, it was genuine and had COA on the bottom of laptop.
Accidentally, at that time I was 12 years old, so I don't know about 'crack', 'hack', software counterfeit, etc. . Thus, I thought my Windows was 'low', I want to upgraded it to Windows 7 Ultimate version with Windows Anytime Upgrade.

I searched key generator (keygen) on internet, I found it and generated the code (for Windows 7 Ultimate). Then, I pasted the serial number (product key) to Windows Anytime Upgrade. First, it was failed. So I cancelled the upgrade. But, when the laptop's shutdown and I turn it on again, it was upgrading to the Windows 7 Ultimate. How weird!

Now, I know the pirated / not genuine Windows is not safe, against the law, etc.

My question, is, I restored it to the genuine version of my Windows (7 Home Basic OEM) using my product key.
But I downloaded the setup using the Windows 7 Ultimate pirated (using keygen) that I told you...
Is my Windows become 'not genuine'?
After I restored it, It is very good, clean, doesn't contain virus or error, works perfectly. Then I upgraded it to Windows 10 Home.
Is it okay? Or I should buy the DVD to perform clean install so it is 100% clean?

Need your opinion, please...
Thanks

Hello,
Im in a trouble, so im hoping that you will help me.
I had a genuine windows 7 for a laptop a while ago, then i sent the laptop to my parents in a different country.
So i bought a new pc, without a operating system, driven by a lack of money i downloaded the old not genuine xp. Along came problems, unknown errors, bugs, etc.
Like for example, now i cannot start safe mode, i cannot make a new partition thru cmd or partition magic cause of somekind of file xmnt.exe is missing.
Sadly, i want to keep my bought games and programs, 'cause my internet is pretty slow, so it will take for ages to redownload/reinstall everything.

The question is: Can i upgrade my not genuine windows xp to windows 7 by buying it and installing like it's a common program keeping all of the programs/games/etc.?

Thank you in advance.

A:Upgrade not genuine windows xp to genuine windows 7.

Sadly if you are looking to regain stability your best bet would be a fresh install of windows 7
Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

as outlined there you can do a fresh install with the upgrade disc, this would result in the loss of your games and programs, though do a straight upgrade from xp to win 7 without cleaning out the garbage is just going to make win 7 run horribly too.

A:My genuine issue

There doesn't appear to be anything amiss in the report - apart from the fact that it's not activated.
What happens if you attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using Internet Explorer?
It should pass.
Assuming it does, use telephone activation and speak to an operator.

telephone activation (operator calls)
Click on the Start button
in the Search box, type
SLUI 4
and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

I have XP Pro. I have been told by Microsoft that the licence is for a multi-user and should not have been used by the PC shop that I purchased my PC from. The shop has been no help. My questions are:

Would I be in my rights to purchase a copy of XP Pro in OEM Version? - As this is what I should have had in the 1st. place.

If I purchase the OEM software, will I be able to contact M/S, give them the new Key and in turn get a code from them to enter in to my PC to make it Legal?

If I can not do the above, Will I have to do a complete re-install? Will this wipe all the data from my C: Drive?

Do I have to run like for like - could I purchase XP Home and install it over XP Pro?

I need all the help I can get!

A:A Genuine Issue

Many places indeed sell OEM legitimately, often bundles with a trivial piece of hardware (such as a ribbon cable) to validata the "with hardware" purchase requirements. Stick to well known stores though.

Microsoft give specific and detailed instructions on how to change the key when you get your valid one.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q328874

There are also numerous utilities that will accomplish this, just use Google.

The installation is counterfeit.
You have an AXIOO motherboard - but the Product Key is from an ACER computer.

As far as I can tell, AXIOO computers are designed and built as vehicles for Starter Edition, and not Ultimate.

You need to reformat and reinstall using genuine media and Key.

Im not an expert at figuring out Windows activation problems but my guess wold be that you have a non genuine key a google search of your product key ("Q6MMK-KYK6X-VKM6G") turned up 12,400 results

This is almost brand new work computer. It is about 3 months old.

The PC ran perfectly fine for about 1-2 months. About 3 weeks ago we started receiving the genuine activation screen.

Our IT has attempted to validate it online (several times) and it takes the validation fine and confirms it is validated. Within a day or so it starts to throw up the genuine advantage screen again.

Below is the MGA report. Any assistance would be awesome. I am extremely limited on what I can install on this PC for trying to resolve this.

The original OS on this was Windows 8. IBM or the shipper installs our image (Windows7) onto the PC before shipping to us.

Thanks,

David

I also found this in the CBS log.

A:Genuine Advantage issue

This machine originally shipped with Win8 installed?

The installed Product Key is an MAK Key for Windows 7 Pro (common in company installs)

The problem is the result of the following error...

Code:
Tampered File: %systemroot%\system32\slui.exe|slui.exe.mui|COM Registration
This is often the result of mistaken use of registry cleaners/optimisers/destroyers (pick any one)

To confirm thatthe problem is what I think it is, please run the following commands in anElevated Command Prompt window and post the results.

Hi all,

I followed the instructions about this issue and I'm posting the results of the scan below:

I appreciate any help to get rid of the annoying message that I've started receiving. I believe that this should be the product of the installation of a new SSD drive and a rebuilding of the existing HDD.

A:My Genuine or activation issue

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194

(you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

Interesting report, that.
A SLIC table is present - but MGADiag reports teh Windows marker as missing, rather than damaged. The table is also reporting the wrong SLIC version.
The installation is counterfeit.

You need to reformat and reinstall using legitimate media and a legitimate Key

A:My genuine or activate issue

Hi BlueBot,

The install is counterfiet

The report is showing an Acer product key, on your Asus.
As well as an activation exploit to try and bypass activation, which has failed.

I believe that comp came with W8,
Suggest you re-install the original OS, so that you have a legitimate product.

further indicators include the Bios date 2014, no Slic table and the tampered file data.

Hello Folks!

I thought I would try my hand here to fix an issue that I'm seeing (from a glance in the forum here) is rather common.

I purchased my desktop, which happened to be refurbished and sold "open box", through Newegg back at the end of August. It of course, came with Windows 7 Home Premium already installed and I had no issues until I started getting the messages that Windows was not genuine and refused to activate, either on the key that was already listed, or on the key found on the COA sticker.

So hopefully, this will help:

This is a custom-built desktop that has been running since 2014. No recent changes to hardware (only change ever might have been RAM addition). After years of updates, recently started getting the notices with 0xC004F200 error on startup. Screen is now black with Build 7601 Windows is not genuine notice. I believe that I still have the COA, but will have to look. Though I didn't build it, I trust the guy who did. Any help is warmly welcome.

I appreciate all help on this matter. On my work computer (with genuine windows 7 pro x32), I started to get the "this computer is not running a genuine windows" pop up message. What I notice from the diagnostic report (see below) is that the Product key is not the same as the one printed on a sticker under my computer.

A:"This computer is not running a genuine windows" Issue

There appear to be no problems in your report.

Please attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate - what happens?

Are you still seeing the non-genuine message?

I just acquired a Sony VGC-RB30 desktop.
The pc allows me to surf the web, but it has a Windows issue.
Just looking for advice on where to start cleaning up this machine.
At bootup:
1) I get to the choice of OS: XP Pro or XP Home, only Pro works
2) after selecting XP Pro, then I need to choose one of 2 User Icons (both have admin rights)
3) then I get the message "did not pass genuine windows..." I choose- resolve later
4) and finally a home page opens up, and I can surf.
on the back of the case is a certificate of authenticity for XP Home Edition
I did not receive any original system CD's for this machine.
Can this "windows genuine" issue be easily resolved?

windows 10, I try clicking on the box and it tells me that" It cannot complete the upgrade because windows is not genuine". So I have to make my O.S genuine before I can obtain the free upgrade. So, does anyone know how I can fix this none genuine

Mmk, So recently I've been recieving these messages telling me that I may be a victim of piracy and that I did not pass the Windows genuine version test. This meaning that I may have a pirated copy of windows. However I know for a fact this isn't true.

I was just wondering if there might be some settings on, or there might be some trouble shooting I might have to do to get it to work. Basically whatever someone might think is a plausible reason as to why I didnt pass the "Windows Genuine Inspection" test.

Thank you in advance!

Hello Peach Pie, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if you may be able to activate Windows 7 online or by phone with your product key number if you have not already.

If that doesn't help, then try doing the Validate Windows option to see if it may afterwards.

Hope this helps for now,

Hello all and please let me know if I'm not posting properly as this is my first post here.  This issue no doubt was caused by December's MS updates so I'm not sure if I should be following this post or another one.

I'm also experiencing the not genuine message on my uncle's HP Win 7 Home Premium x64 laptop.  As my user name states, I'm the one all the family calls when they have computer issues as I've been involved with computer repairs and technical support as a career for many years.   The only access I have to his system is remote as he lives on the other side of the US and when I checked his system neither KB3004394 or KB3024777 show up in the list of installed updates.  I downloaded KB3024777 from Microsoft's site and ran it manually (twice) but it still doesn't show up there.  I think it probably doesn't actually install because KB3004394 isn't there to remove, but that's just a guess.  The problem is that although neither of these updates are present, the not genuine Windows message appears after every restart, but right clicking "Computer" and choosing properties does display it's genuine after about 30 seconds.

Is anybody else experiencing this?  I've showed my uncle how to alleviate the problem for the time being by right clicking the computer icon and c... Read more

First of all - welcome to BC !

Probably the simplest thing for you to do is to try activating this copy of Windows again. You will need the COA, the 25 digit alpha-numeric string that should be on a sticker on the computer somewhere. Click 'Start - control panel - System' and you should see a link 'Activate Windows'. If this doesn't work for you then you will need to give MS  a call. If this screen doesn't give you a free-phone number, google MS activation and you will find the number. It is usually a free call.

If this doesn't work, post back.

Hi,

My Aunt got her PC fixed a while ago and the guy was nice enough to update it to Windows 7 free of charge... which I thought a bit odd at the time. It was fine for ages but its now started coming up with messages saying its a counterfeit copy, and says Build 7601, this is not a genuine copy. We cant get back in hold of him now funnily enough...

So clearly the guy was a rip off, however it does ask for an activation key (which he obviously never gave us), but do any of you guys know a way around this?

I'm fairly ok with computers so you can give me normal instructions to follow if there is a quick download or something.

This is weird, I installed Windows Vista Business on a partition on my laptop...but my Windows 7 is now shot. For some reason all the settings are the same as the Business settings, I mean even the wallpaper changed...Now I cant even go to the control panel on 7 since it says that explorer.exe isn'r running but in the task manager it is.

As I said above, it is considered not genuine.\

I put the disc in and ran the startup repair, which it found problems and fixed them but the same problems still occur. My Windows Vista Home Premium has not been affected by this at all, still runs great without a hitch, no setting changes either.

Any advice would be great, if a reinstall is needed, I will just remove it from the pc. If that would be necessary how would I delete that partition even with a windows installation on it?

Thanks in advance,

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/234159-windows-genuine-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
