laptop says copy of windows 7 not genuine but it is genuine

Q: laptop says copy of windows 7 not genuine but it is genuine

Recently a note has appeared on bottom right of screen on my laptop which says-This copy of windows is not genuine.
I know for a fact it is genuine as i only purchased it 0n the 3rd December 2010.
I have not had any problems with it until the note appeared on my laptop last week.
Can someone tell me how i can correct this please.
Many thanks

There was a 5 page thread on trying to downgrade from Ultimate to Win 7 Pro but I thought I should start a new thread. I have a thead on a different forum but was hoping someone here might know the answer.

Users computer says Windows is not genuine, was 7 pro, in Sept 2013 we upgraded to Ultimate to use Bitlocker. System bought from Dell, used Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate. I spent ages on phone with Microsoft today, they have completely agreed both copies are valid, and the computer is saying they're not, in error, they will not admit that it's a Windows Update that caused it likely.

They took over remotely, and 30 minutes later gave up, none of the methods worked. She then advised me to BUY a copy of 8.1 and do a clean install. I don't want 8.1, if we have to reinstall I'd rather do Win 7 Pro again(same valid code) and then up to Ultimate again(same valid code), or go to Win 10 when it comes out. Of course you can't upgrade a "non genuine" copy of Windows 7 to win 10, even if it is in fact genuine.

We don't want to have to reinstall. MS also told me I need to downgrade to Win 7 Pro, put in the code, then upgrade to Ultimate. To do that they said I have to do a clean install. I've seen all the links to Windows Downgrader but we aren't exactly thrilled to be advised to use a 3rd party app. I have not tried the registry suggestions yet, I'm not particularly comfortable dealing with the registry. Two questions.

If MS had been willing to just give me a new U... Read more

I got a notice after booting up my windows 7 ultimate today that it is not a legit copy.
It is a retail copy and has been running fine for a few years.
Nothing has been installed in the past few days and the only major thing I've done lately is to
remove a bunch of restore points to clear up a ton of space on my computer.
I'm at a loss at this point.
I've tried entering the product key, but it doesn't activate it.

any ideas??

Please can anyone help me....

Hi

I have an ASUS notebook (U31F i5 with 4 GB mem) which until recently I used only occasionally. It has Legit Office 2010, but no CD/DVD drive. My desktop hard disk crashed in a big way so I am using the notebook as my main computer.

It has just recently started throwing up messages that my Windows Homw Premium (x64) is not genuine. It is gebuine OEM and activated (back when I got the notebook), and I have not tampered in any way.

I have had a look at some other threads on this forum on this issue, and so have dowloaded and run MGAdiag.exe, but to my inexpert eye, it appears to report everything OK.

I have pasted text in below, and would welcome more expert advice as to whther I have missed something, and if not, what should I do next?

regards

PB

Hi,

Last November I built a new computer. I purchased a copy of Windows 7 Pro from eBay and it came with a product key. I installed the OS using the product key and everything was fine and everything has worked successfully since then.

A few minutes ago, I noticed that there was a message in small type in the lower left corner of my screen. It said:

Windows 7

Build 7601

This copy of Windows is not genuine.

I figured something had temporarily gotten screwed up so I did a restart, expecting the message to go away when the computer started up again. This time a window opened and the message in it told me that my copy of Windows was not genuine and it gave me the option to upgrade to a valid copy, or to "Remind me later".  I clicked Remind Me Later and when the reboot was finished, my wallpaper disappeared and I had a black background. All of my desktop icons still seemed to be there. And the message that I originally got was still posted in the lower right hand corner.

I noticed that there were some updates available, so I went into Windows Update and installed them, hoping that this would fix the problem, but no such luck. Same as before.

Does anyone have any idea why, after 9 months, this message should begin to show up, and how I can get rid of it?

Thanks in advance.

Lately when my computer starts up in the left hand upper corner it says "Serial number not detected", today it now says in the right lower corner on desktop "Windows 7, Build 7601, This copy of Windows is not genuine." How can I fix this???

A:Why does it say This copy of Windows 7 is not genuine

1. Quoted from THIS source:If you're seeing notifications that the copy of Windows that is installed on your PC might not be genuine, or that you might be a victim of counterfeit software, it's likely that your copy of Windows was not properly activated or is otherwise not genuine. To fix this, click the notification and follow the steps to either repair Windows or?if you have inadvertently obtained counterfeit software?buy genuine Windows.Until you correct the issue, you'll receive periodic reminders that Windows is not genuine. In addition, to more clearly display these messages, your desktop might turn black. You can reset it, but every 60 minutes, it will return to black until the issue is resolved. Regardless of genuine status, Windows will still be able to get critical security updates. However, access to optional updates or benefits available exclusively to genuine Windows customers, such as Microsoft Security Essentials, might be restricted.2. A:This Copy of Windows is not genuine. Help how to fix

Both the Windows and Office installs are counterfeit.
You have the infamous Lenovo Stolen Key installed on an ASUS machine, with an apparent HP SLIC table - ain't never gonna happen!
Your installation of Office is based on a stolen and blocked Volume License Key.

(and you got the same response in the MS WGA forums as well!).

After following those steps and I got now only a plain light blue screen on my desktop.
I'm trying to get back to the regedit , but I can't as it say the device is not ready.

I'm really trying to fix this ASAP.
Any help ???

A:This copy of windows is not genuine.

You shouldn't have edited your Registry without making a backup. Put your Windows 7 DVD in the drive and boot off of that and choose Fix Your Computer. Get to Command Prompt and type chkdsk /R and press enter. Check Disk will try and fix any errors. After you get Windows going again, you are going to need to activate it and make it genuine with a correct product key, if you have a Pirated Copy we cannot help you here due to forum rules

A:Copy of Windows Not Genuine

Hi liberts This message appears when the activation of your Windows product fails and therefore it warns you that you are using a non-activated version of Windows, which means it's not "genuine". Do you still have your Windows Vista product key? Did it come with your computer/laptop or did you buy it separately?

I've always downloaded the "Windows Update" that pops up on the task bar, and it suspects that I'm using a non-genuine copy of windows. Can this be because I share the same copy of Windows with a couple other different people?

Anyhow, my main point is, how do I uninstall those updates that I've installed so this "you may be a victim of a counterfeit copy of Windows" which appears at startup. I was going to try system restore, but if someone had a better solution, it'll be great.

Thanks.

Hi,

About 2 weeks ago I had an issue turning on my computer. I would get a blinking LED light after attempting to turn it on. I took it to a computer repair shop, guys said it was a motherboard issue, and said they could fix the issue. After fixing it, it worked fine for a few hours, but now my desktop background is black, and I get a message saying

"windows 7, build 7601, this copy of windows is not genuine"

Anyone have an idea what may have happened? I'm assuming it's not a computer virus? Not the most computer savvy guy here.

Thanks!

Suddenly my Windows 7 gave me that message. When I tried to activate I got a message that said there was a problem.

Got the run around but still can't activate. No way can I find the phone number to call and get support. What do I do now? Does anyone have the phone number for activation or support?

Welcome to TSG....

Call Microsoft and talk to them about the possibility of purchasing a legal copy of the Windows XP for your computer. Believe it or not this is the only way that you are going to be told thru this forum

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop which used to run Windows Vista until I upgraded to Windows 7 around a month ago. I verified the licence key with microsoft and it worked up until a few days ago. All of a sudden I turned my computer on to finds a windows error message telling me that i need to activate windows and that i may be running counterfeit software. I am sure that its not counterfeit.I dont have anything on my computer that isnt backed up so I tried to complete a system restore. This didnt work because my system says that I do not have any restore points. I tried reinstalling windows with the cd, but it says it cant because the disk is going to fail soon. The only way I have any functionality with my computer is when I use it in safe mode, but i still cant use and microsoft program because windows says its not activated. I have tried everything I could possibly think of to solve this problem including running free editions of avast antivirus, superantispyware, and malwarebytes, but nothing has worked. I cant run active kill disk or dban. Many programs say that locale data files are missing when i try and open them.

Is there any way that I can solve this problem?

Edit: When I start my computer normally i get prompts asking me to activate my windows software, but i cant activate it through these prompts. I get error code 0x800700B7

Out of the blue, with no warning whatsoever I noticed that in the corner of my screen it said something like build 7601 this copy of windows 7 is not genuine. Mine is and I am 100% sure of this because there is an authenticity sticker with activation code on the bottom of my laptop and my computer itself says that the copy is genuine in the 'properties' section of my computer.

Do I have a virus? My kaspersky has noted:

1)kernel mode memory patch which it says is an inactive PDM keylogger. It notifies me of this every couple of days, though when I looked in its reports for all time it only listed this one 'sighting' of this PDM thing.

Aaaand....nothing else.

Thanks for reading.

This error can be a pain to isolate - it may be quicker/simpler to do a repair install.

Having said that, please first try this.

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at the next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

I just bought an Acer Aspire 4730z from a shop owned by a friend of my mom... and I asked him to install Windows 7 on it for me before buying it, mainly because I hate Vista, which is what was originally on it. Now, for some reason it keeps saying that my copy is not genuine. Normally, I wouldn't care much about this, but every few minutes or so I get a little pop-up on the taskbar notifying me of this, and it keeps removing my wallpaper and replacing it with a solid black background. This is very annoying.

So, is there a way to keep this from happening? I'm a little afraid to download a verifier, because I'm afraid it will lock me out of windows or something if this is indeed a pirated copy of windows 7. Is there any risk of that? What should I do?

A:My copy of Windows 7 is not genuine?

did you get an original win7 retail disk and a microsoft coa (Certificate of Authenticity)? If not, then most likely you did not get a legal copy.

You have no choice but to contact microsoft if you feel you have a legal copy. nothing this forum can do for you.

I bought my DELL Studio One computer approx. 10 years ago.  It came with Windows Vista 64 bit (OEM).  WIndows worked fine until one day in October 2015, a pop-up window showed that I had to register my software.  I thought it was rare, but I did it anyway.  To my surprise, the message that appeared said that my windows was not genuine.  I called DELL to see if they can help, and they said that it was probably a malaware, and that they could look it at remotely, but since my warranty expired years ago, they want it money to do it.  I told them no thank you!  Next I called microsoft, explained the problem, they asked me for the key number so they can check it.  The representative said that he checked, and the key I have from DELL, is locked.  I told him what DELL said it could be a malaware, and he said that he didn't think so.  He then tried to sell me windows 10.  I said no of course, because if I paid for window vista when I bought the computer, then I should not be forced to buy any other software.  I have a laptop that came with windows 10, but I don't like it.   Can anyone help?

Also, my computer is running super, super slow.  Everytime I open any program, it freezes. HELP??????

Hi! I purchased a new HP and it came with a Windows 7 O.S. DVD. I installed it fine and it has been working fine. All of the sudden I started getting error messages and warnings that say things such as "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting" and "This copy of Windows is not genuine." It gave me the option to insert the product key for activation and when I entered the key I was given with the disc, it said that product key was invalid for this copy of Windows and I have to run a Windows 7 setup or enter a Windows 7 Professional product key. I am not computer illiterate, but I am pretty darn close! HELP!???

That's not your OEM Product Key, that's your Product ID. If you happen to have a genuine product key, Click Change product key and enter it, that will solve the problem.

First off you are using a rather ancient build of Windows 7. I would suggest that you scrap the build for 7100 which is the Release Candidate (you can still get a key for it) or go for build 7600 which is the final version in stores...

Hi -
I've been running Windows 7 since it was new. Now, out of the blue sky it's got this message in the bottom right corner saying "This copy of Windows is not genuine", and, just above that, "Build 7601".

When I googled this, it appears that there are many "fixes" for this. Some of them give complicated installs and uninstalls of Windows 7 fixes, updates and patches. Sounds like a great way to seriously mess my computer up.

Is there a known, simple fix for this?

Thanks in advance.

Doug

A:This copy of Windows is not genuine

First off, try just shutting windows down from the start button, and choose restart in safe mode. Mess about a bit in case Windows needs a bit of time to look around. I.e. run chkdsk in read-only mode just in case there has been a bit of corruption. Then if all is clear, restart again into normal mode. This has been known to work, and is quick and simple. Luck.

I have a 3-DVD recovery program that I used to reset my PC to factory install. After a while of tweaking with optimizations and stuff, I noticed the disclaimer on my background saying my copy is not genuine

I did many things, like before when I reset my BIOS firmware. Other than that, while tweaking I:

-Fine tuned visual settings for better performance
-Removed unnecessary startup programs
-Disabled/stopped the following services:

Quote:
Block Level Backup Engine Service
Bonjour Service (from iTunes)
Certificate Propagation
Group Policy Client (if not on domain)
HomeGroup Listener
HomeGroup Provider
Offline Files
Portable Device Enumerator Service
Security Center*
Software Protection (make sure you activate Windows first)
SSDP Discovery
Windows Defender*
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
Windows Search

The "Software protection" make me most suspicious. I didn't have an issue like this before.

I also Removed the installation and re-install Xubuntu. Also before I even did all this, I wiped my drive to all 0s.

A:Non-genuine copy of Windows 7 :(

Looks like you disabled Software Protection too soon. Windows takes a while to check on activation.

I have a Family Pack for Windows 7 Home Premium that was purchased from Office Depot about 6 months ago and only installed on one computer. About a week ago when I logged in I got a blue screen with "Windows 7; Build 7600; This copy of Windows is not genuine" in the lower right hand corner and Windows 7 will not start. I called Tech Support and they told my that the warranty had expired and it will cost me $59 for them to give me a fix. Why should I have to pay for a fix for something that is obviously a bug in Windows 7? Is there something I can do to correct this short of reinstalling Windows 7?

A:This copy of Windows is not genuine

Thats a stupid situation, I don't understand how can they say that.
Do you remember if you enabled auto updates or not? Do you have Service Pack 1 installed?

Hi! I'd love some help/advice regarding messages I have just recently started getting saying that I may be the victim of fraud because my copy of Windows is not genuine.

I purchased the pc used from a local pc store about 2yrs ago. I knew it was a used computer and have not really had any problems with it, so it surprised me to be getting these messages just now. I don't know how this works with reselling used pc's and the OS that's on them, and I have not yet had any success with contacting the sales person who sold me the pc.

I'm wondering if anyone has any advice or information regarding this issue. I'd greatly appreciate it.

A:Help! Non-genuine copy of Windows ?

This is the only fix and it is cheaper than purchaing it thru a store.

Microsoft did introduce a program where they would replace a pirated copy of XP if it was unknowingly acquired and you will find the details of that offer at this link. I think the best thing for the member to do is to contact Microsoft and they may be able to help the member out.

Next morning I tuned it on and on the screen came the Microsoft logo, Then the option to accept or decline window 10. I declined and it said it would try and restore windows 7. But , there's a message every time I turn it on to say its not a genuine copy. Now I am using as normal every thing is the same my passwords are still stored and my favs are still there. What to do? I still have the discs but I have no idea what to do and I do not want to use the use of my laptop. If I was to change to windows 10 would it be the better option.

A:This copy of Windows is not genuine

Interesting result that -
Notification Reason: 0xC004FE00.
is an error we don't often see, and is almost always (and should be) accompanied by a timestamp in the TTS error line.

I think in this case it's a bit of mis-diagnosis on the part of the tool - try this....

Please first try recreating Licensing Store.

Recreate the Licensing StoreGo to Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt
Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

net stop sppsvc
(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
REN tokens.dat tokens.bar
net start sppsvc
slui.exe
After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear.
You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.
If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

It's probably important to include whether your copy of Windows is actually genuine or not.

Getting the Windows 7 not a genuine copy.message and a black screen, about 2 monthe ago after trying Windows 10 tried to go back to Windows 7, P C then refused to work, tried a fresh install with the windows 7 disk that came with the PC (Brand new disk unopened), but that would not work, kept stating....startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically, then tried the Windows 7 disk from daughters laptop and that did the trick, any help how to get rid of this messge.

A:Windows 7 not a genuine copy.

Even if your daughter's laptop...is exactly the same as yours...using that as installation media should provoke that error message.

License mismatch...for OEM system.  The license on the install disk does not match the license for your system.

System manufacturer and model...for each system you have mentioned, please?

Hello, I just recently noticed I have a problem I got this message "this copy of windows is not genuine" It is genuine though it came with the e-machine when I bought it and has never given me this message before.

I just recently installed linux mint 13 mate. and so I deleted other partitions containing ubuntu. I ran into a little difficulty because apparently the MBR in windows did not exist or windows could not access it. I did not know what to do about that so I decided to install mint and have it boot up my pc and it worked from there I was able to open windows from the dual boot menu. Somewhere in this process I tried to repair windows hoping it would fix the MBR with my repair disks but it would not work it said not enough disk space to back up all my files so it stopped working.

Otherwise I thought everything was ok Linux mint booted up ran fine. And windows opened fine and ran fine. Until I saw this message that windows is not genuine.. Is there a way I can verify the numbers? by inputing them somewhere in the pc software? The pc has the OS validation numbers on the back. As the software came pre-installed.

I tried to validate windows on the web but it only tried to make be buy a new windows program.

I really don't want to go through the whole re-install thing I actually have the pc working fine except for this message..

Thanks for any attempts to help.

Dave

Hi everyone, thanks for reading.

I've installed Windows 7, ran Timer Nuke and Watermark Remover, yet whenever I open the Control Panel or during other times, the watermark returns and I'm once again warned that it's not genuine.

I don't know what to do, friends! community! Could someone help me resolve this headache?

I've had this computer, since probably March of this year. I had it custom built for me. I have had no trouble with it, nor have I had any reason to believe that anything was wrong with it. However, this morning when I started up the computer, it did not boot as it should. Instead a screen appeared reading that "this copy of Windows 7 is not genuine", and I believed it asked if you wanted to make it genuine. I clicked yes and it booted up. I think someone in my household mentioned something about this one time before (about this computer) but I cannot be certain, since I was not here when it happened.

I would like to know if I should be worried at all about this. Does Windows 7 have random times when it verifies its copy? I hope that this DxDiag is the correct information that you need. Maybe you could assist me. Thank you in advanced.

Lol, I used the exact same disc to install W7 Pro X64 on another PC this morning and I got a "THIS COPY OF WINDOWS IS NOT GENUINE", you must activate today and my desktop background turned black!

One my 1st PC using the exact same disc, I never got that message....the only difference during the installation was maybe I didn't enter keys (went downstairs) and I disabled the UAC right after installation...could this be the cause?

Anyway I entered the keys, went online to activate and all is fine now.....I just thought a clean instillation would give you 30 days before activation

A:This copy of windows is not genuine - why?

Quote: Originally Posted by ben07

It usually does unless you modify the any BIOS/hardware settings (drivers) or timezone/time settings after installation, You also probably left the "Auto Activate after first use" option selected on the setup screen and since it attempted activating on its first use and then failed it probably caused the "Activate Now" messages, You could always use the rearm command and get another 30days trial period

FYI: It doesn't matter what installation media you use, your DVD had absolutely nothing todo with it skipping the trial period

I'm not really that knowledgeable about computers so bear with me. Every time i start my computer a black screen appears and it says your copy of windows 7 is not genuine. I can't do anything on this screen. I tried setting my computer to boot from DVD and re install windows 7 but when i do this is just ignores my windows 7 disc and goes straight to the black screen with your copy of windows 7 is not genuine. I even tried booting from a flash drive and it still wouldn't work. I'm really not sure what to do, this is a custom built computer. Not sure if it matters but i'm using an SSD as well.

Help please. I've searched and saw many threads on this subject but my situation seems simple. Biostar MB and original copy of Win 7 Pro. I recently reformatted my HD and did a clean install of Win 7 Pro. Installation and activation went fine.

Because of some other issues I did another reformat and clean install. This time before the install I cleared the CMOS in the BIOS setup of my MB and reverted back to original CMOS settings.

On this Win 7 install I am now getting an error message in the lower right hand corner of the desktop saying: "Windows 7 build 7601 copy of Window not genuine". This message occurs after I do a Windows update.

I feel this has something to do with the clearing of the CMOS and it should be an easy fix. What's my next step to correct this? thanks

Simple answer, it may not be genuine.

A while back MS started sending updates to detect Windows that were not properly activated. It could, also, just be a glitch.

Where did you get your copy?

So i put the hard drive back into my main computer and when i logged in my desktop was black and said "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine" at the bottom right. I didn't buy windows for this computer because the hard drive is from a past windows computer (I believe). I keep getting a pop-up window that says"You may be a victim of software counterfeiting". Vista has been installed for a while, now it is suddenly saying it is not a genuine copy (was happy the six months or so I had it). Now it is suddenly saying it's not genuine and I have to reinstall, I have internet access over a phone line but since I have a mobile I don't pay for a landline on top of that.

Is it normal for people to have to pay extra on top of the originally buying price to reactivate a Vista or is there some way to reactivate without having to pay more money for something already paid for?

A:This copy of Windows is not genuine

This message is to remind people to activate their copy of Windows. You can get more information by visiting: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/.

If you have already purchased your copy, then you have no worries. You?ll simply need to verify a few things.

Please Help Guys,

Almost every time I turn on my laptop and log into my account a screen comes up saying something along the lines of Thank You For Validating Windows. This takes up the whole screen and I cannot exit unless I press OK. After my desktop is fully loaded a message comes up saying that Windows Aero has stopped working, you may be a victim of counterfeiting. There is then a link which takes me to Genuine Microsoft Software. I then run the validation test and pass. Also sometimes there is a message in white writing in the corner of my desktop which says:

Windows Vista (TM)
Build 6001
This copy of Windows is not genuine.

My Vista Ultimate is 100% genuine.
Please Help me find a fix which will stop these messages from coming up again.

I have had my system for several years. Today my windows is giving me the message "This copy of Windows in not genuine".
I don?t know if it is a side effect of having been infected by hijacker Groovorio a few weeks ago. I removed it with several freeware scanners.
I used a Key Finder to get my product key. But it will not take it, its says "The product key appears to be a default key".
I have rebooted and still get the same problem.
Can anyone help with this?
How can I find my real product key?

Having discovered that my copy of Windows 7 (Ultimate) is not genuine, I am in the process of purchasing the software from Amazon.

My question is a simple one:

When I have the new software do I need to reinstall Windows onto a clean disc, or is it sufficient to enter the key from the new package onto the already installed but non-genuine version?

A:This copy of Windows is not genuine.

Generally you can do that and it will work. Depends on where you got the pirated source from as I have seen cases where these copies are obtained from legitimate MSDN (or some other Microsoft) media and there's nothing inherently wrong with them until someone comes along and either gives you a bad product key or cracks it. If you simply were given a bad product key, putting in the new product key should be sufficient; if however the Windows installation came from dubious sources or was modified in odd ways, I would suggest you reinstall as you never know what bad software could have been included in it.

My laptop keeps telling me that I don't have a genuine copy of Windows 7.

I suspect that this is because I have moved Windows from the original hard disk to a Crucial SSD

When I run WindowsActivationUpdate.exe it fails to install and I get error code 0xC8000247

If I run sfc/scannow there are some unresolved errors. I could post the log file if that would help

Is there a way I can convince MS that my copy of Windows is genuine, aside from a re-install?

I left my laptop on sleep, and came back to it, to be greeted by this message in the bottom right of my desktop.. Attachment 276663 ....it almost blew me out of my chair.

OK. So I then did a check for Updates and found one from Windows Defender. Went ahead and successfully downloaded and installed it - my thinking being that if my system was NOT genuine, then the Update would have been denied and rejected? Correct??

I then went ahead and completed a system validation via Microsoft links, and when I got back to the Desktop, the message above was gone.

I then did a few more checks to verify that all was OK and genuine ... [Identifying detail have been removed]

Hi Everyone. I don't know if I am posting this in the right thread, but I need some help. I bought an Acer laptop in November of 2012 and it worked great for me for what seems like forever. About 4 months ago however, it crashed. I've had Norton 360 Anti-virus on it ever since I bought it a few months after I got the computer. It has helped me get rid of some nasty viruses before they got bad. Then about 4 months ago, within a matter of 15-20 minutes it pretty much just crapped the bed. It started out with a message saying that the copy of windows was not genuine. It was in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. I figured that it was a virus that had gotten through, so I tried to run Norton to clean my computer. It wouldn't work though. It wouldn't even open all the way. I even did multiple system restores and that wouldn't work either. It seemed like everything I tried to do to fix my computer made it worse. I can't even get my computer to turn on now. I had a friend who knows a lot more about computers than I do look at it. He says that I need the reboot disk so that he can try to reboot my computer. However, I don't think that that will work because, like I said before, the computer won't even turn on. Is there anything I can do to try to fix it? I really need it for school, since I go to college online. Anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Usually that situation signals a hardware failure. Did you get any documentation with the computer, does it show anything about a Reset for it. Have you tried removing the battery, unplugging it and let set for awhile before trying again? Most Notebooks [and Desktops] don't automatically come with the Factory Restore discs, rely upon a small program the User can run to create the set. I high-lighted the because usually only one set can be made.

I am trying to repair a Lenovo G585 Laptop for a friend. It was previously working fine running Win 7 64 bit. After upgrading to Win 10 it was restored back to Win 7. Now on start up it gives the error message, Windows 7*, Build 7601, This copy of Windows not genuine. It will not activate with the original product key and am prompted to buy a new product key.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Kind regards
Chris

I have a hp pavilion laptop d4 that all of the sudden says that the copy of windows is not genuine. Does the licensed of windows expire after a while?

A:Copy of windows vista not genuine

No, it does not expire. It normally means an infection or a failed MS update.

For the first case, you need to run standard malware tests see here http://www.techspot.com/community/forums/virus-and-malware-removal.28/

But before you start that, just in case of a failed update, try just shutting windows down from the start button, and choose restart in safe mode. Mess about a bit in case Windows needs a bit of time to look around. Run 'chkdsk' in read-only mode just in case there has been a bit of corruption. If errors are reported, repeat as chkdsk /r. Then if all is clear, restart again into normal mode. This has been known to work, and is quick and simple. Good Luck.

The Key in use is an MSDN Key from a not-for-resale MSDN account.
Unless you are an MSDN subscriber, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.
You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

Started the PC yesterday and got a message that my copy of Windows is not genuine, after several years of use. Have tried some steps I found online but generally come up with errors in activation (0x80070005). Last thing I did with the computer before this was install Comodo backup. Tried restoring to earlier backup but problem persists. Have tried Microsoft support but can never get through after extremely long waits. Any help?

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 which I purchased, used, from a former neighbor.
She had upgraded it to Windows 7 Home Premium and that is what is currently installed.
She had given me the MS box and info, when I purchased, but in a subsequent move it was
somehow lost or stolen.

A few months prior to the message appearing, I got a virus, or something on the machine
and discovered the recovery partition of the machine had been "corrupted" and did not work.
I do not recall how I recovered from this as it has now been so long ago; but I believe the
help was via Dell Support, or maybe in spite of them.

A few months ago, after owning this laptop for nearly 2 years, I suddenly started getting the
7601 -Not Genuine message. I was away from home and needed it fixed so I found someone
locally who charged me $30 to fix it. It seemed like all was well... that is, until a few days ago
when the machine started spitting up the same error message.

I seem to be able to use the laptop just fine, at this point, but the messages are soooo annoying...
so I turned to the internet to see if I could fix the issue myself. What I found, eventually led me here;
So I come pre-armed with the MGADiag results.

Two additional, perhaps useful, data points:
This machine is currently protected by Avast! and
I did try activating online and by phone without positive results.
I look forward to any help.
Here are the unedited MGAD results:

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Hi,

I was, up until a month ago, an avid user and supporter of Win XP Pro, (32 bit). However, I built a new pc last month and as it was a full 64 bit m/c I thought I'd give Win 7 a go and see how I got on with it.

I wanted to "try before you buy", so I downloaded a copy of Win 7 Pro from a torrent site. Installed it and all was good. I found I actually loved this version even though I was a devout XP fan up until that point.

Anyway, I decided a couple of weeks ago to purchase a genuine copy of Win 7 Pro, (allbeit an OEM version), so that I could use the key to make my current copy legal. However, 2 days before my OEM arrived, I was suddenly prompted with a message - This copy of Windows is not genuine, (or words that effect). My desktop image disappeared and a little "footnote" was left in the bottom right corner of the desktop.

I figured Windows defender had tried to update and that's when MS found me out.

So, my OEM arrives and I duly enter the key and the message goes away and I can reinstate my desktop image. "Great" I think to myself. 2 days later, the message reappears and if I right click My Computer/Properties, the "Ask for genuine MS s/w" sign is there and my desktop goes black again.

Seems nothing I do will make this legit copy I now own, legit.

Any ideas? (Diagnostic report below. I've removed a few more digits, just in case someone has a powerful decrypting tool to make my key visible )

A:Win 7 Pro - This is not a genuine copy of windows message

There are no obvious problems in your report -it's possible that one of two things happened...

1) You had a 'race condition' that sorted itself out in the normal way, when MGADiag forced a re-evaluation of the license.
2) MGADiag has a limited repair capability - and that came into play.

You need to go to the Validation site to confirm that all is well (www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate ) - and you should install the WAT Update (KB971033) from WIndows Update, which will enable better information-gathering if the situation recurs.

I got this error an hour ago and its really driving me insane.

What happened was windows update did its usual thing, however when it went to install the updates, an error window popped up telling me that my copy of windows may not be genuine and I need to validate it.

Down in the lower right corner of my screen rests an error code:

Windows 7
Build 7601
This copy of Windows is not genuine

The validation came back and told me my windows copy is indeed not genuine and redirected me to a screen to purchase a new windows activation code.

However, I know for a fact my copy of windows is, genunine. I bought this laptop nine months ago, I also bought the windows 7 software, and I installed it to my hard drive.

I have no hard drive damage, to my knowledge. The only major thing I have had happen is that monitor damage that happened a while back, that a few users helped me out with.

I did searches on this error. A lot of them are saying that its a Trojan. Well I did run my computer antivirus, along with windows defender and nothing was found. I checked my downloaded files, to make sure nothing snuck in. Nothing.

After nine months, it just suddenly comes up and tells me I have a bootleg copy? The hell?

Help please.

Edit: Here is the error code on my screen.

I was using my laptop as usual and I got a pop up. I then closed that pop up message and it restarted. I am able to login, but I can't do much more than that. I can't even type in a product key. I have no idea why this happened. I wish I could go back and do a system restore, but that's not possible right now for obvious reasons. If I try to type in a product key, I get this message in the screenshot. Also, I'm not looking to do a clean install as it would wipe all data I have on the HD and have no room on my external to back up otherwise I would do a clean install. I'm looking to undo any changes before this happened.

My son-in-law gave me a mini hp laptop he had purchased at Walmart. It came with Windows 7 on it. His family had used it for a year and no longer wanted it. I ran System Restore and restored it to it's original state. It was running fine for a couple weeks, now it suddenly says the Windows 7 is not genuine. Not sure if the Windows 7 product key is the same as the activation code or not, but it has mostly rubbed off with use. I was able to use software to get the Windows Product key, but it won't accept it. Not knowing what I need to do, I followed a post I found online and ran CHKDSK and something called SFC. That didn't produce anything but to tell me it didn't find any integrity violation.

I have also tried to restore it to original state again thinking I may have done something to corrupt a file, but it won't give me access to the recovery drive again. I can only restore it to an earlier restore point. I went back to the first one available, but that didn't help. The recovery drive is there, but I can't find a way to access it.

The notebook is an HP Mini 110 1116NR

I went online to correct it and followed instructions to re-enter code. It now tells me 0xC004F063 The Software Licensing Service reported the bios is missing a required license.

Can anyone suggest anything else I can do?

Thanks

Hello,

Since yesterday morning I've been getting the message "Windows 7 Build 7601 This Copy of Windows is Not Genuine" on my HP Pavilion Elite desktop computer, which I purchased in 2012.

I called Microsoft and they said that HP was blocking my copy. I then called HP, and they said they don't do that. I then explained to HP what happened. They thought it might be a virus that was the cause. I explained that I had a backup hard drive (a duplicate of the date and OS image, etc. from a month ago) and the same problem error popped up when I used that one. They said it might have been a "virus bomb" that's been on the system for months and set to go off on a date. It could also be in the BIOS.

I ran an Adaware scan and a MalewareBytes scan. Both of them found some malware that has been removed, but the problem remains. I'm currently running "Microsoft Safety Scanner".

Does anyone know how I can fix this problem? Are there any well known viruses or maleware that are known to cause this issue?

Additional, about a month ago I had the motherboard replaced by a professional computer company. The other motherboard was damaged due to a power surge, possibly. The replacement was not an upgrade. But that was a month ago, and everything was working fine until yesterday.

I ran MGADiag.exe. Here is the code:

So I've run into a bit of a problem with 7. I have purchased two copies of 7, the first was basic 32bit (7600) and after a using it for a while on my laptop I decided to add some RAM and purchased a copy of Ultimate 64bit for the same machine. After upgrading to 64bit I loaded the original 32bit copy onto a friend's computer. Just yesterday she started getting prompts that her copy is not genuine, blah, blah, blah. I've purchased two legit copies and have only installed on two computers, I am not using pirated software or simultaneously running the same key on multiple machines. Any suggestions on how to work this out? Is there a way to deauthorize the 32bit install that is no longer on the 64bit machine?

A:Copy of Windows not genuine question

Your friend was given a phone number to call when activation was denied. Call this number via a touchtone phone, if the activation does not go through explain the situation to the Rep, who will get on the line. Explain the situation, and you will be activated. This is not a problem if you bought 2 full retail versions of Windows or you have 2 upgrade versions with 2 qualifying OS to support the upgrade.

http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/e...n-centers.aspx

The important questions that the rep will ask are. How many copies did you buy. How many machines have windows installed?

I know this makes me the idiot, but I have beaten myself up over it for a while and cannot fix this myself so I am now humbly coming forward with my idiocy to get my Toshiba Qosmio back up and health. So here's the deal:

I got the popup that I wasn't running a genuine copy of Windows 7 64 bit Pro (which I am...came from the factory). Tried to resolve it online and the only answer I got was to buy another copy of Windows, which I don't really want to do. Then I tried to run Windows Update and I get random error codes as to why I can't. I tried a system restore and got a message that there is an error on my hard drive, to run chkdsk. Tried that, nothing. Even when Windows rebooted it wouldn't let me. So then I boot towards the safe mode menu and see an option for Windows Repair, choose that and click on system restore. I pick a restore point a week or so ago and try to restore. Negative. Got a message that not only could it not restore but now that restore point was damaged (hooray). Tried rebooting to that screen and all I get is black: pointer works with touch pad but not mouse. Tried booting into safe mode and I couldn't get explorer.exe to run and had no icons. Then rebooted to Last Known Good Configuration which is where I am now.

Ultimately I am trying to figure out why IE 11 won't install as it is standing between me and watching GoT via Roku, but there are a few other Windows updates that won't install either, and after some reading I wonder if Windows not being "genuine" is the culprit. The laptop is 5+ years old, I can't remember if I bought it with Windows already installed or if that was done after the laptop's arrival, but I do have that line of text in the bottom right of the screen saying "This copy of Windows is not genuine." I tried reading through some troubleshooting guides online, but figured it's time to consult the experts before I do any damage.

A:Copy of Windows 7 Not Genuine, Blocking Updates?

File Scan Data-->
File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\sppwinob.dll[6.1.7601.17514], Hr = 0x80004005

Unusual error there!

Let's go at this from a slightly different angle...

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file, and a new copy of the MGADiag report.

I have been using Windows 7 Ultimate, which I purchased about 2 years ago from Amazon.com, but recently had to do a repair install. Now when I try to activate Windows 7 it says that I can't and tells me that my copy of the OS is not genuine. But I have been using this copy for TWO YEARS. What can I do to activate Windows?

A:Windows 7 wrongly tells me my copy is not genuine

Did you buy from Amazon direct or from someone selling through Amazon?

Microsoft has a phone activation method or you could also call MS customer service and see if they are impressed when you recite your 25 character Product Key to them.
