Robocopy - Copying Folders With Spaces in The Title.

Q: Robocopy - Copying Folders With Spaces in The Title.

Hey guys,

This may sound like a really silly question, but I'm just getting to grips with using Robocopy.

How do you copy folders with spaces in the title? E.g: T:\Admin Tools
I keep getting an error.

Any help would be great thanks.

A: Robocopy - Copying Folders With Spaces in The Title.

It's ok, I've worked it out. I didn't realise I had to put Quotation marks in!

I want to use Robocopy to backup the data from my external hardrive D to a file called 'Backup' in a cluster storage W.
I only want to backup the modified and new files. In other words, I don't want to back up all the files in D every time I run Robocopy.

This is what I wrote by reading other posts on the forum:
title Backup personal files
robocopy D:\ W:\Backup /e /mir /np /tee /log+:backup_log.txt

However, the script below does not back up all the files.
Any suggestion on how I can improve the robocopy script?

Thanks a lot for your help!

I've set up a back up batch file to copy my Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos folders from my computer to an external hard drive.
However, while running the Documents backup, it seems to find, the pictures, music, and videos folders all inside the documents folders labelled "My Music", etc.
However, these folders do not exist. When I navigate in explorer to C:\Users\username\Documents\ I cannot find a folder labelled "My Music". When I try to navigate to C:\Users\username\Documents\My Music it tells me that "access is denied". I cannot find them through command line either.
As well, when I try and find the folders on the backup drive, they do not seem to be there either.
I just don't understand where this is coming from.

It sounds like you are running foul of junction points. You may need to use the /XJ switch.

Last week I used a robocopy tutorial on this site to create a backup script, and it was working fine. Today I tried to run this script, inputting new destination information but leaving everything else the same, and now it is copying all of the folders, but none of the files.

It counts a total of 509 Dirs but 0 files--no skipped, no mismatch, no failed.

My syntax/options are as follows:
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" /E /tee /log.Public_backup log.txt
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" /E /tee /log.Training_backup log.txt

Does anyone see what might be causing this problem or have suggestions?

The source folder is directory:\folder and the destination folder is directory:\folder\subfolder\subfolder, if that matters.

A:Issue with Robocopy only copying folders, not files, in Windows 7

It should default to all files (*.*), but you could put the *.* in the command to see if it makes a difference.
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" *.* /E /tee /log.Public_backup log.txt

If that doesn't work can you post the actual commands you are using, with the real folder names ?

Hi, I just started using Robocopy to backup my files to my JBOD recently and I noticed that it does not copy anything in My Document folder. Here is the result log for Robocopy regarding the backup.

Even though it says that it copied 22831 files the destination folder says it has not been modified at all.

The strange thing is that when I was checking back on the progress in the cmd window, it showed that it was copying files. The problem is I have no idea where those files went, the files that were supposedly copied aren't there at all. Here is the script I used to back up my files.

I have the following issue: I want to copy files
including all their attributes and ACLs from my
computer to a network storage.

Our architecture is quite simple: a single domain
controller (I believe it's Windows Server 2008 x64)
and many desktops connected to domain.

Our administrator said we could do this with robocopy
utility which is installed on our desktops (which vary from Vista to
even Windows Server 2003 - just because it's more stable than
XP). She said we have all the permissions required for the operation.

When I tried to perform the following operation:

robocopy C:\MyDirectory \\Storage\TeamA\MyDirectory /E /SEC
I get the message "Access Denied" on 3rd file. When I spoke to our admin,
she told me to find exactly what set of permissions should be defined, and she
will set it as I say.

So, can anyone explain me exactly what permissions/settings/anything else should
be existing for C:\MyDirectory and \\Storage\TeamA directories?

Should our users be defined in some specific way? Anything in policies?

I'll be really appreciative.

In addition: does robocopy perform privileges elevation? So it can accomodate the
minimal required level to perform the operation?

Thanks a lot.

Hi all
I have just found Robocopy and it seems the perfect tool for what I am trying to do....
I make an incremental Backup on one of my PC's (Called Server-PC) every day using AOMEI backupper and I want to mirror that folder on my main PC I have been fiddling with Robocopy for hours now have Googled everything I can think of and can't find out what I am doing wrong.

First of all I Mapped my E:\ drive on My Main PC onto my Server-PC and called it Z:
Using this script --- robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "Z\ServerDriveCopy" /R:5 /s /purge /COPYALL as a test I Get
Source : D:AOMEI\
Destination : C:\Users\mike\Desktop\Z\ServerDriveCopy\

It starts and then says "There is not enough space on the disk" There is still 700gb empty on the disk! I have checked if Quota's have been enabled and they haven't so can't work this out!

I just found out there is a GUI for Robocopy so I tried that and made a slightly different script:
robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "Z:\ServerDriveCopy" /MIR /S /V /NP /Z /R:10 /W:30 (The only difference is the colon after Z !
and that goes MAD keeps repeating in the cmd window forever but no error message and no files get copied.

So I tried it without using the mapped drive which gives me :
robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "\\Main\e\ServerDriveCopy"
and that says "Access Denied" !
I can drag and drop files in explorer OK so I am stumped.

If any one can help I would be very grateful

Hi All,

I have one folder A and have another folder B in the same drive E: I need to move all the content from folder A which are more than 2 years old to folder B. Hence when I ran the robocopy it just copied and I lost all disk space in drive E.

My question is even though I used /MOV command why it is not copied and deleted from the source?

robocopy E:/A E:/B /e /MOV /MINAGE:730

Please suggest..

A:Robocopy /MOV command copying but not deleting from source directory

I created folders Test and Test2 on drive E:, copied some files over and under two years old and tested with command

robocopy E:\Test E:\Test2 /e /mov /minage:730
Works perfect. All files older than 730 are moved, copied to destination and deleted from source. I can only think of two possible causes for your issue:System considers files to be newer than 730 days old
A syntax error in your command
Please run the command, take screenshot of the last part of summary (under the dotted line, highlighted in screenshot below) and post it here.

And maybe something with securities as well? There were some "Error 5"s. Other than that, what do I need to do? The files themselves are copied. Now it's a matter of the hidden stuff, I think. Hi there,

New to the forum, please go easy

I've got a robocopy moving a file using /MOV from one folder to another.

Is it possible to add a second destination so that the contents of the original folder will be moved to both destination folders? How would the syntax look? (below is current syntax)

robocopy "\\source path" "\\destination path" /S /E /V /NP /MOV /XD in /R:10 /W:30

A:ROBOCOPY - /MOV to two destination folders

Hi mate.

You could do two things:

1. You can try to use ROBOMOJO to run multiple robocopy jobs
more info here: Running multiple Robocopy jobs in one batch file

2. You can run two separate robocopy jobs, with 10 minute interval between them.
Check this post: One source to multiple destinations with Robocopy

I have created a batch file for copying my Documents folder to an external hard drive:

robocopy C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents J:\Desktop-Backup\Documents /copyall /e /LOG+:c:\users\USERNAME\documents\backuplog.txt

The log file shows that it is backing up C:\users\USERNAME\documents\My Music and C:\users\USERNAME\documents\My Pictures.
That's fine, because I want those backed up anyway, but when I go to J:\desktop-backup\Documents, the Music and Pictures folders aren't there (or anywhere else on the J: drive).
I have "view hidden files and folders" turned on. It seems that the files are actually there because my Documents folder is only 700MB, yet several GB have been taken up on the J: drive.
Anyone have any thoughts?

I am trying to use robocopy to backup files over our home network, from my daughters computer, to my backup drive. Unfortunately, she is sharing about 20 folders on her computer, and the only way I can get it to work is to write a separate command for each folder:

robocopy "\\CHRISTINE\Music" "K:\Christine\Music" /mir /z
robocopy "\\CHRISTINE\Photos" "K:\Christine\Photos" /mir /z
robocopy "\\CHRISTINE\Video" "K:\Christine\Video" /mir /z

I tried entering just "\\CHRISTINE" but this results in a path not found error.

Is there a way to get Robocopy to locate all the shared folders on her computer automatically (in case she shares new folders without my knowledge)?

Hey there,

I'm attempting to use the guide posted on lifehacker to move the users folder to a different drive as W7 is installed on a rather small SSD.

The guide is here: Move the Users Directory in Windows 7

I followed the directions to the letter, except of course, when it came to fixing the drive letters. C: was swapped to e: while the drive that I would like users on is f:

I've tried it with and without /copyall. I've tried changing the switch to - instead of /, and I've tried using /xjd instead. But every single time, robocopy skips 37 (of 195) directories and the process fails.

Does this guide simply not work? Or am I missing something? I'd really like to move the whole thing (especially Appdata), not just documents.

I'm using upgrade media of W7 home premium 64bit and a fresh installation of W7 (unactivated as yet - though I had the same problem before with a fully updated/activated version of windows.)

I doubt it's needed, but specs:
i5 2500k, 8gb ram ddr3-1300, p67 gigabyte motherboard (I can't recall the model offhand), 1tb wd caviar black, 64gb crucial m4, radeon hd 6850. The partition I'm trying to move the users folder to is freshly formatted ntfs with nothing on it as of yet. I checked the drive - it's apparently healthy. It's also only 2 weeks old.

Thanks in advance - this is rather frustrating.

I've had some issues with mirroring my root directory to a backup folder on my netbook in that the backup folder becomes hidden and a system file after Robocopy has run (note the backup folder existed beforehand).
To stop this happening i believe i can include the switch /A-:SH which would remove the system and hidden attributes to the entire backup folder and all folders under it?

However if i wanted to maintain the hidden attribute on a particular folder could i add /A+:H "//netbook/C Drive/Backup/hidden_folder" to the command line as well?
I'm assuming this would have the same affect as attrib +h "//netbook/C Drive/Backup/hidden_folder" ?

I currrently have:-
robocopy /MIR d:\ "//netbook\C Drive\Backup" /XA:S /XD d:\windowsimage d:\downloads d:\bittorrents "d:\bittorrents completed"

I'm intending to change it to:-
robocopy /MIR d:\ "//netbook\C Drive\Backup" /XA:S /A-:SH /A+:H "//netbook/C Drive/Backup/hidden_folder" /XD d:\windowsimage d:\downloads d:\bittorrents "d:\bittorrents completed"

(making all folders unhidden and non-system but add the hidden attribute only to the hidden_folder folder).
Would you say this is correct and will produce my required results?

in my opinion it is strange because you don't use /COPY: or /COPYALL switchers

robocopy /MIR d:\ "//netbook\C Drive\Backup" /XA:S /A-:SH /A+:H "//netbook/C Drive/Backup/hidden_folder" /XD d:\windowsimage d:\downloads d:\bittorrents "d:\bittorrents completed"

In my opinion it won't work. You can't use /A+:,/A-: switchers for only particular objects. You can use it only for all copied objects.
In my opinion it will be appriopriate -unfortunatelly it require two commands:

robocopy /MIR d:\ "//netbook\C Drive\Backup" /XA:S /A-:SH /XD d:\windowsimage d:\downloads d:\bittorrents "d:\bittorrents completed"
attrib +h "//netbook/C Drive/Backup/hidden_folder"

Is it possible to change the displayed title of folders, which have been pinned to the Quick Access list to something other than that of the folder-name itself? IOW, change it to a title of my choosing.

I do realize I could simply change the folder-name itself, but that's less than ideal under this system's circumstances since this it has specific folders backed up daily, and they occasionally need to be restored, which would overwrite this change each time a backup was applied.

A:change the displayed title of folders?

Use desktop.ini files to do this. Use the ones already in your documents folder as a template, you need the localized name entry.

Next open a command prompt and use the following command on the folder.

attrib +r c:/folder
attrib +h +s c:/folder/desktop.ini

Apologies if this has already been covered. I did try a search but got nothing specific to my problem.

I currently have 4 Windows 8.1 Pro units around my desk.
One is general day to day.
One is gaming, audio & video work.
One is a currently retired 'server' for backups.
One is the replacement 'server' for backups.
This contains an SSD system disk, a 2Tb HDD for Macrium Reflect images and 2 Storage Space pools.
One consists of 2x250Gb HDD's called DATA & assigned to drive letter 'D'.
The other consists of 4x1TB HDD's called STORAGE & assigned to drive letter 'E'

The replacement 'server' unfortunately decided to go do-lally :(
All I know is, it suddenly decided to reboot 4 days ago and everything went haywire.

As a result I purchased a new motherboard, CPU, ram with the intention of building a fresh install of windows 8.1 on the basis the storage pools would show up in the new system.

Here is the problem !
The pools show up in Control panel /Storage Spaces as DATA (F:) and STORAGE (G:)
Both pools show as OK and all 6 drives show as OK.
If I click on 'view files' nothing happens :(
If I go to windows explorer they show up as Local Disk (F:) and Local Disk (G:)and if I double click to open I get a 'Location is not available. F:\ is not accessible. The volume repair was not successful'. Same for G:

Why is Storage Space manager saying they are working properly when nothing else can access them?
Are they recoverable somehow or have I lost everything ?

Note: If you don't see a pop-up when you mouse over a folder, you need to enable a couple of settings. In explorer, click Change Folder & Search Options, and then select the View tab. Then, in the Advanced Settings list, select the check boxes for

Will leaving the old thumbs.db and various .ini files in the folders I copy have an conflict on the new Windows computer?

I don't think I ever had a problem before, but as it will be the wife's new computer I surely can't have any problems or I will never hear the end of it!

You might come into some Overwrite conflicts but you can Not copy those when you copy the files over however if you do the Folder icon will have changed to one that looks like XP and maybe the folder view (Desktop.ini)

If that happens then you might want to try the following - Folder Template - Default

Ok, so I have a model T2082 emachines, bout 4 years old w/Windows Xp.
Here's my problem. I have a ton of digital pics saved on my PC in my documents/my pictures. They've been eating up my memory-soooo, today I go out and by a 2 gig Lexar JumpDrive Firefly memory stick, you know to put the pics on. I fit just about all of them on there, except for just a few folders. Well, there were some videos mixed into these folders, and I forgot the boyfriend told me to leave those on the PC to make room for more pics. Anyways, I download away. Works fine. When he gets home and sees I put some vids on the stick, he unloads the stick back onto the comp.
NOW, not only is everything back on my desktop (in folders), but some of these pics have copied themselves--some more than once, and in a totally diff folder than they were in originally. I have noticed this happening before, why i don't know.

So my question is, to fix this mess, am I just going to have to go through one by one and delete the copies? Some of them are mixed in with original folders I've put on the comp and some made their own folder that just says (copy) next to the folder name. Any advice will be great. THANK YOU!!

A:Picture folders copying themselves!! ugh

I am assuming your boyfriend “moved” stuff from the flash drive to the desktop. If he “copied” them you probably wouldn’t be asking since you could just delete the folders on your desktop and then copy only the movies back to My Pictures like he should have done in the first place.

The easiest thing would probably be to run this software on your desktop:,25706-page,1-c,downloads/description.html Set it for “Name And Size” to avoid the possibility of deleting files with the same name but different content.

Once you have removed the duplicates I would do a Windows search for the file extension of the movies. If you just search the desktop Windows search shouldn’t find extraneous files. Edit > Select All. Then Edit > Copy. Right click on My Pictures and “Paste”. Make sure they all showed up OK in My Pictures then “Select All”, right click on one of the highlighted files and “Delete”. Copy the folders back to the flash drive.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my post. Here is my question/problem. I created a folder on my computer and right clicked it. I chose properties > Advanced and clicked on Encrypt contents to secure data. I have some files in this folder that should now be encrypted.

I now copied this folder to my Dropbox account. Using my OS X machine, I was able to open the folder and access the content. The OS X machine does not have the certificate created by Windows in my personal certificate store.

Why was I able to access these files from my other computer when I put the file on Dropbox?

A:Encrypted Folders Accessible After Copying

My first guess is only the hard-drive contents are encrypted. If you password a zip-file, that would remain scrambled on the cloud.

Hi Brad. . .

Just so I understand correctly - let's call external HDD drive k: for now

1. copied laptop c:\users to k:\users
2. renamed k:\users to k:\users2
3. copied desktop c:\users to k:\users and got "merge message"?

Assuming #2 worked, I don't see why the merge message would have appeared

What I do -
1. create k:\HP
2. create k:\Toshiba
3. HP system - copy c:\users to k:\hp, result = k:\hp\users
4. Fujitsu system - copy c:\users to k:\fujitsu, result = k:\fujitsu\users

Hi everybody.
I have a problem copying customized folders.
Before Windows 10 correctly copied customized folders from a disc to another or inside the same disc. Now, when I copy a customized folder, the customized look goes lost.
I make a practical example below.

1. Open Local Disc (C) and I create two folders. Let's call them "Folder 1" and "Folder 2"
2. I right click on "Folder 1".
A menu appears. On this menu, I select "Properties".

On "Properties", I select "Customize". Here I have the chance to change the look of my "Folder 1".

I choose a look of my choice ( any is ok ).

I open the "Folder 2" and I PASTE my "Folder 1".
What do I get?

"Folder 1" without the previous customization. Why??? It is wrong. I'm copying something. It must be copied as it is.
5. I delete the copy.
I exit "Folder 2" and go back to Local Disc (C).

I left click click on "Folder 1" and, keeping clicked, I move it inside "Folder 2".
I open "Folder 2" and I find my "Folder 1" with its customized look. ( !!!! )

A:Problem copying customized folders

Noted that if I set a folder picture or icon, (and don't hide system files) desktop.ini appears in that folder.

The desktop.ini file is present in the copied version of the folder, but the copied folder appearance is default. That is, the desktop.ini file is present, but not expressed.

I also noted that if you copy that folder, then move it to the same destination, there's no notification that the folder already exists. Further, the copied and moved folder appears as default.

If having customise a folder, I delete it and then create a new folder in the same place, the new folder has same desktop.ini in it- the same picture/icon. Only by manually setting the customisation to default can I eliminate that.

(Noted that there have been several reports of customisation being lost in copy to external drives).

How do you solve it? I don't know.

I don't know if this is the correct forum to ask this question but here goes anyway. Does windows have, or is there a program that anyone knows about that you can copy one file to multiple folders(directories). My operating system is windows 98. I've searched for such a program but have not been successful. Any help or advise would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am running Windows XP home edition and I was copying two folders to a new hard drive (external) and seem to have lost them!!! I had a session of an image browser up (to do visual review as these were image files) and within that browser I had the entire list of subfolders displayed for the 2 folders in question. I had been actually using Windows Explorer to copy/paste from the c: drive to the new drive and just browsing using the image browser during the copy process to prepare for the next session. When I came to these last 2 folders, I decided to drag them over and move instead of copying as I really didn't need dual copies of them (at least not on those 2 particular drives as I had plans to make a second copy on yet another external drive). Well in the process of dragging, my cursor went wild, flipped out and dropped them before I actually released the left click. It was not apparent exactly what folder it dropped them into, so I figured I could find them by doing a search. I have 12 unique subfolder names that I searched on. None of them were found anywhere on any drive!!! I looked manually too, opening each possible folder that they might have dropped into - no luck.

Can anyone offer any advice on finding these folders? I know that a "placeholder" is assigned by windows in order to find stored files and I am assuming there must be some way to get windows to "find" that placeholder in a case like this where apparently it has lost it's way ... Read more

This problem started today. Whenever I try to copy a file or a folder, the pasted one doesn't show up. No error sounds or messages. I have never had this problem before. And hidden folders and files are set to show.

I tried System Restore; I tried checking if the clipboard was locked (it wasn't); I tried rebooting; I checked for signs of pushow; all to no avail.

On the other hand, TeraCopy works, with the exception of copy/pasting to Program Files. It appears to work fine if I try to, but no file shows up.
Strangely, though, if I try copying the files again, it asks me if I want to overwrite the old ones, which as far as I can tell do not exist: Windows Explorer tells me the folder they are meant to be pasted to has the same size, and the files themselves aren't shown. I repeat, hidden files are set to show.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

A:Folders and files not copying in Vista

I've discovered that copying through the command line works (using copy or xcopy), even to Program Files (given Administrator credentials, of course).
In addition, I've found that copying text works fine.

This is becoming more confusing by the moment, and it's pretty urgent. Does anyone have any idea how to fix it?

The file is on my "D" drive

I have tried 3 different USB ports with same results.I am using Windows XP SP2 and windows explorer to drag and drop.

Do I need to format the new flash drive?

im experiencing extremely slow speeds when i copy files. im copying my website folder as a backup, the folder size is arpund 300mb, and contains hundreds of small files. in xp it would take a few seconds, but in 7 its taking over 30 mins!!

anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? im running AVG free, and not a lot else.

AVG can slow it down as it is scanning all accessed files. You can verify if it is AVG by shutting it down for a while.I recommend you avast! antivirus which is free and low on resources.

Hey guys,

I'm searching like crazy but I can't seem to find a solution. I like to disable to protection that prevents me from copying files from a mapped network drive directly to \Windows\etc. I need to copy the file to a local drive first and I find that annoying.

I've already disabled zone security warnings and the open file warning but this one I can't seem to find.

And please don't preach security to me, I'm aware of the risks and I'd like to decide for myself what I can and can't do, thank you :P.

Thanks for the help!

A:Allow copying from network to protected OS folders

You would have to make an Admin share, rather than a Homegroup share. Enable the administrator account and give it a simple password, then use that account in Advanced File Sharing. Give it ALL permissions. Use that account to access the Windows 8 system when you map the System drive.

I've always used this kind of MS networking for LAN's and it's never prevented me from moving stuff into my windows folder from a remote machine.

Let me make a screenshot of my share

There you go, you can add either "Administrator" or "AdministratorS", the settings are in "Permissions" - Give these users all three permissions.

I took a friend's hard drive out of their computer as Windows won't boot and wanted all their data saved. I plugged into my computer, saw the extra drive, and prepared to copy their "Documents and Settings" folder, which has all their subfolders and files.

That folder has 18.3 gigs, 3.047 folders, and 72,827 files. When I copy the Documents and Settings folder to another drive, it is just 543 megs, 518 folders, and 2,319 files. ???

Obviously, I am missing a ton of content. Why can't I capture the entire contents of the Documents and Settings" folder? How do I capture it all?

Thank you.

Hi Everyone

I am new here and new to Windows 7 which I installed on the weekend in order to run my media through the Win7 MC.

I ran into a problem when I try to copy from external HD (USB external drives) or shared network folder.

Every time I try to copy something, and it doesn?t matter how I do it whether it is CTRL+C or right click and then Copy, Windows Explorer crashes.

This is very annoying since I have to then switch to Vista (dual boot) and do it from there.

Is this a known problem?
Are there any workarounds or solutions to this?

Hi all,
Windows 7 Pro 64
I am at my wits end with using windows 7. I am sure this must have been beaten to death on here and I am sorry but I am not sure how to word it to search for the answer.
I hook up a spare HD to the USB with the same operating system and every ******** file I try to open on it I have to adjust it for administrator and da da da and I am sick of this, it will take forever to look at the data. How the heck to I fix this once and for all so I can just open what i want to ? I am the administrator...I don't want to be flagged about administrator anything any more.
Secondly, if I want to back up data on a stick and there is already a folder of the same name it asks me if I want to merge it. No I dont so I change the name of the file to something different and it STILL always tells me there is a folder that has the same name do you want to merge it ???   Good grief the name has been changed there isn't another folder with the same name.  I NEVER had these issues with XP.......what a pain.
Thanks for any help on this.

After comparing (e.g. with a synchronization program) two folders (with or without sub folders), I often would like to move special files / folders instead of copying (synchronizing) them.

E.g. there are 10 folders on the left side, 5 ones of them (having the same name like the ones on the right side) are already existing on the right side. The ones being on the left side not existing on the right side (having different names than the ones on the right side) shall be moved (not be copied) to the right side.

How can I do it? Is there a (freeware) program?

And which program can just check whether folders with same names are already existing on the other side (regardless from their contents / files)?

Nice greetings, Dirk

For reasons I won't explain, I want to have one large folder on a large external hard drive that will contain all of my pictures. The problem is that my pictures have been downloaded (by various cameras and software) in multiple folders and places on my C drive. I know that normally an easy way to do that would be to search in windows for all pictures and then copy them to the new drive and single folder. The probem is that several of the pictures are named the same but are actually different pictures. Additionally, the pictures have been downloaded from the camera multiple times in the small folders, each containing many duplicates.
What program (or windows application) can I use to copy them into the one folder so that I don't have duplicates and I don't have one picture (named the same as another) copy itself over the other.

Hello there!

Recently i purchased this rig:

evga gt8800 supeclocked
Asus P5N-D
HDD- samsung HD753LJ -750Gb
some crap dvd burner

System is:Xp 32-bit sp3
Latest drivers and bios

So i started to copy some of the files from my full to the brim laptop Acer Aspire 5610 thought LAN.
2-3 times the system hangs. 2 of them when watching from VEOH
Well not exactly just became so slow that the mouse need 15sec to move 5cm on the screen. Keyboard responding with same speed.Cant open the process manager even.

So i have the following ideas:

1st HDD heats up too much maybe some failsafe feature ?
Was really hot before i installed a cooler and monitored the temp -26 deg. If the program shows it right. Still hanged 1 time after the installation of the cooler.

Tho i couldn't c the temp in the moment before it hangs as i was watching something on the VEOH full screen.

2nd guess is somth from the Flash player ?
Tho normally the Firefox shuts itself down if there is any problems.
But i had some dab experiences with it as well.

3rd guess SP3 ?
I am thinking of uninstalling it?
Some final thoughts if it were a single processor rig i would understand if that happens(explolrer get screwed or somth), but on quad core

oh and I am talking folders > 6GB with lots of files.

Any insights or ideas are appreciated.

I have UAC completely turned off. When I try to copy any file into the Program Files sub-folder, I'm denied by Windows. I tried applying full permissions to a folder, that didn't even succeed, so I can copy a few files to a sub-folder within program files.

I know Windows has tough security features, how can bypass this, especially within a standard user with elevated Administrator ?

A:Copying Files to System Folders Denied

Windows does this to protect itself. From threats (malware) and drive by downloads. If you had UAC on you could easily elevate yourself to fix this issue. I am not sure why you have it off. This makes windows 7 security similar to XP. It should never be turned off.

A standard user account in no way shape or form can alter the program files folder. Standard users do not have permission to install or change software. This is kind of the main point of a standard user account. (As well as restricting access to system settings.)

A few questions:

1.) WHY are you trying to copy something there?
2.) How are you trying to copy it?
You could try using the build in administrator account to do this.

Hi All,

Just found this forum, first time poster. I'm a programmer but don't know too much about hardware/screen dumps etc...To get to the point, I'm encountering the problem below:

Just bought a new cyberpowerpc from Fry's, installed a 3rd hard drive (Western Digital 3TB). Everything seems okay except when I try to copy any large files/folders to the new drive. I'm using a folder that is 11.3GB with 686 files. I can copy it from drive 1 to drive 2 no problem. When I copy it from drive 1 or drive 2 to the third drive (the 3TB one), it will start copying then sometime soon after, explorer will close itself down and the computer will end up rebooting itself. Sometimes there will be a BSOD and sometimes it will just reboot without the BSOD.

I have tried to attach the dmp files etc...using the recommendations of the forum. Any help would be very much appreciated. I'd like to use this new drive for backups (it's the reason I got a new pc, my old one crashed and I didn't have a good backup system).

Thank you for your time, please help if you are able.

EDIT: I've run chkdsk, scanf, sea tools etc..on all drives and they all appear to be okay if that helps...

A:BSOD Copying large folders to new WD 3TB internal drive

110 Views - any ideas out there? I'm clueless as to what the dmp files are telling me, but am happy to update drivers etc...just looking for some options. I can reproduce this consistently so will know right away if something fixes the problem. Just downloaded and ran the WD DataLifeguard diagnostics and the hard drive passed all tests.

Sometimes I see a message saying "Intel Rapid Storage Technology - Disk on port 0...removed" - could this be a bad driver or something? Also, the HD didn't come with a cable so I just bought the only one i could find at Best Buy - could that make a difference? Thanks!

Windows backup wizard sucks because it keeps telling me I don't have enough space on my 1TB HDD to create a system image (if someone could help with that, awesome).

I have 4 drives in my PC. A 120GB SSD for Windows, a 2TB HDD for storage, a 256GB SSD because I had a coupon and some spending cash (lol), and a 1 TB HDD for backups.

I am tired of messing around with Windows Backup and Restore so I figured that I would just copy and paste the important foldersto the HDD. I want to copy everything in my user folder (the one that has My Documents, My Music, ect.) and I also want to copy game saves and a few programs that are not easy to replace.

I have a few questions. I guess I will just list them.

1) Should I just copy and paste folders to the HDD? Is there a better solution out there that is relatively noob friendly?
2) What folders do you suggest I do that for?
3) How do I backup Firefox and Chrome settings and bookmarks?
4) What types of other things should I backup that I might not think of or that you think are also important?
5) If I do this every week, how do I keep from creating duplicates or overwriting folders with identical folders? I know when I copy and paste a folder it asks me to merge stuff but it doesn't ask me to skip any folder I already copied and pasted.

A:Questions about performing a manual backup by copying certain folders.

You should think in terms of two things:

Backing up Windows itself and backing up your personal files (everything else you care about other than Windows itself).

The best way to do the former is to use an imaging application, but not the Windows tool due to issues such as you are seeing. The image file would be a single very large file that must be "restored" to be useful. You could use Macrium, Aomei, Acronis, or others. Macrium is probably the favorite around here.

The best way to do the latter is to use an ordinary file-by-file copying program that just replicates the files and folders of your choice from one drive to another. There's a lot of these programs, most of them free. I use FreeFileSync. Others include Karen's Replicator, Second Copy, Synctoy, etc. They all work pretty much the same way, but differ in their interfaces. You can include or exclude any folder or file or file extension, etc.

You can configure these file by file copying apps to do either of the following:

Delete a file on the backup if it has been deleted from the original drive. This is usually called "mirroring"--the backed up stuff is an EXACT match of the original.

Don't delete a file from the backup, even though it has been deleted from the original drive. Keep both.

You could just copy and paste, but the above apps are smart enough to only copy files that are new or changed since the last backup. I do it daily. Takes FreeFileSync less than 60 seconds.

I have been using Thunderbird for several years; now with 9.0. I recently had need to replace my HD, as the old one would not Start in Windows 7 (separate thread).

I have downloaded / installed Thunderbird; and I can locate all the data on the old HD. This is connected to the Computer by a Docking Station, which have given me access to everything I need. I tried to copy over the profile in on the old HD; and it carried over the Address Lists, but not the Local Folders.

Perhaps I am missing something, and would welcome any suggestions. It might be best if I remove Thunderbird from the new HD; start again and hopefully some good soul can provide a step by step guide. Question; If i do this again; should I set up the Email Accounts and the Lightning add-on; before attempting to copy over the old profile.

A:Solved: Thunderbird: Problem Copying Local Folders

If you have the complete old Profile, simplest is to do a clone of it to the new drive.
If you have T-bird already set up on the new drive do the following.

Open T-bird and click Help>Troubleshooting Information.
In the Application Basics section, click the "Open Containing folder" button to open the Profile in use.
Close T-bird but keep the Profile folder open.
In the Profile folder, click Edit>Select all.
Click File>Delete.
The folder should now be completely empty. DO NOT delete the folder itself.

Open the old Profile folder on the old drive.
Click Edit>Select all.
Click Edit>Copy.

Go to the empty Profile folder on the new drive and click Edit>Paste.

You should now have an exact copy of the old Profile in the Profile folder on the new drive.

Open T-bird and it should be the same as it was on the old drive.

I am looking for a way to quickly copy/move/import IMAP folders and their contents to a local folder in Outlook Express 6? I wish to convert two of our sale's department's e-mail accounts from IMAP to POP3. The users have set up about 30 folders on the server to sort incoming mail by customer. I would like to move all of those folders and their contents to a local folder on one computer in the office and then switch the account to POP3. The mail server on our hosting service (Lunarpages) supports both IMAP and POP3.

Is there a simpler way to do this short of manually recreating matching folders in Local Folders and copying the remote IMAP folder contents, one folder at a time?

Hello everyone,
I'm trying to copy the user profiles from a few different Windows 7 PCs onto a 500 GB Western Digital Passport portable hard drive. I'm doing this for a friend who's getting rid of a few PCs as she may get a new one and/or a Apple laptop. I'm familiar with Windows transfer but didn't feel safe using that as I'm not sure what OS she'll be using later on. For the first machine (a Dell laptop w/Vista), I copied the user profile folder from the laptop to the portable drive. All the files were copied, except for the ntuser files and one other that couldn't be copied. When I tried to copy the user profile on her desktop to the portable drive, I first confirmed via properties there were 48,159 files at 65 GB. Problem is, when I pasted the files into the portable drive folder the copy window that popped up said only 1911 files at 1.22 GB were being copied. All user profiles were copied but many of the files within the profiles were missing such as my documents, my pictures, my videos etc. In the main profile, only eight items out of 24 were copied. I did do a small test and successfully copied the My Pictures folder from the desktop to the portable hard drive.

Any idea what could be causing this? I tried using both the copy command as well as drag-and-drop all with the same results. The portable hard drive is new and I was able to successfully copy a user profile from her laptop to the portable hard drive.

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

I noticed this about a 4 days ago...

If I went to download a file, it wouldn't let me save it - it was grayed out.

Last night, I was trying to write a data DVD w/some files on it, and I couldn't drag/drop files into the window of CDBurnerXP. It also wouldn't let me add them, thru the program menu.

I also discovered that the drag/copy function wouldn't work, between folders.

Cut/paste works fine.

Also, the Win7 taskbar at the bottom of the screen is non-functional at bootup, but if I go to task manager and quit explorer.exe and then run it again it comes back.

Actually, just opening Task Manager brings it back.

Browser windows for all programs are also acting funny - not being able to close them and such.

If I need to fill out a form online, I can't select from a dropdown menu.

I did a Malware and MS Security scan, in safe mode, and ran scf/scannow in admin mode, w/no joy.

Any clues? I haven't found anything about this thru Googling.

Thanks in advance!

I have the habit of customizing folders' icon for easier management and nicer look, when needed. When copying a folder or many folders/subfolders with Microsoft Explorer, no matter where the destination is, the customized icons are showing up properly rather than the standard yellow folder icon.
I started using a synchronization application as I need to replicate some data on different devices/places and the synchronization should be two way so that no matter where I work and what I do I have a perfect mirror of the data.
Sadly, I noticed that any kind of software, even xcopy (from MS-DOS), fail to replicate properly the customized icons. So, I end up with plain standard folders on target path.

I read this article on this forum but it does not apply (see below). I also opened a new support question on (it is in Italian) but nobody seems to answer with a solution.

The goal is to be able to replicate/reproduce custom folder's icons without any manual interaction exactly as if I would do this via Explorer. It is not acceptable that a user has to manually modify what was synchronized having to go through thousands of folders...

I am trying to understand what does Explorer do that makes it capable to reproduce the correct icon when, instead, any other software fails and how to apply the solution to third party software.

Please anyone can kindly help?
Thank you

Hi everyone!

I'm having very annoying issues with my computer and need help...

Basically, opening any folder takes at least 30 sec, moving, copying and deleting give me time to grab a cup of coffee (or 2!) and so on... Opening applications isn't easy either, the Start menu takes a long time to pop up as well.

But... applications do work once they're open. Even games such as the Sims, heavy ones, I mean.

I'm puzzled... my tech guy had kind of repaired a similar episode 2 months ago by replacing the network adapter (hope that's the right word for it... English is not my first language... I mean the plaque that will connect me to the internet) and formatting the computer. How large is your profile? To find out:

1) Open Windows Explorer

2) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings

3) Right click on your username and select properties

If the Size is more than 100GB, I'd strongly suggest either deleting stuff you don't need or moving stuff that you to use often to some sort of "archive" folder outside of your profile.

Let me know if this helps. If not, we'll look a little deeper into the issue.

I tried IE8. This seemed to interfere with Mcafee. When I opened the security centre there was only a plain white box.
Couldn't 'uninstall' IE8 so I restored to before IE8.
This rectified the Mcafee problem but now IE7 seems corrupt.
There is no text in the title bar. The menu bar (favourite, tools etc is missing. Right clight on the title bar offers only restore, close etc.
Downloading is not working too well. There is no 'pop up blocked' menu displayed to allow downloads.
It's running on Xp home.
Everything was fine until I tried IE8 and then restored.
Nearly forgot to mention that the tabs are missing too!

Any ideas????

A:ie7 menu bar missing, no title in title bar

This MAY NOT be your exact problem, but....

IE7 uses Vista display criteria. Normally the Menu seems not to be there.

What they (idiots at Microsoft) did is replace the Menubar with a Context Menu. Right-click the Titlebar and you should see your Menu listing, and if you select View, you can check Classic Menubar(?) and get the Menubar back.

The other problems MAY be solved by resetting your Internet Options, especially the Advanced tab.

Hello, I remember the time when moving or copying folders to different locations used to keep their "Date Modified" detail exactly the same as the original, yet now when I move or copy a folder to a different location, the Date Modified is updated to the date and time that I moved/copied it. Why has this happened? What fix can I do to keep that "Date Modified" detail to be the same exact as the original?
"Date Created" is supposed to apply the new date and time, Not "Date Modified".

Hello. I'm just wondering if there's any way to get the behavior from Windows XP back when copying a folder that already exists? In Windows XP there was a yes to all button, now I first have to tick the small box at the corner and then select yes, and I need to do this twice as I need to do it for the specific files too. Hi, I have 2 questions which I desperately need help with. Here's the question: 1. robocopy shoud Run in a separate terminal window and recheck file system changes every minute. 2. write a continous logfile that contains all detected file system changes including full pathnames of affected files. How do I do this?

A:Robocopy (help please)

This is one way, put this in a batch file:

robocopy command here
timeout 120 > nul
goto Start

Lots and lots of robocopy parameters, one of which is /log:file (file being the file you want info logged ion). > nul hides the Timeout in n seconds message.

I have created a robocopy.bat as below :

robocopy C:\Users\Faust_000\Documents\Alfredo "F:\Backups Documents" /e /mir /z /np /tee /log:Alfredo_log.txt

and I have created a Planned Activity into the Planning Utility to run at certain time every day.

Now my question is :
1. if manually activeted by double click robocopy.bat it perfectly works and the log.tx file is created
2. if I execute the robocopy by the Planned Activity (by manually Excute or automatically at the planned time) the robocopy is done correctly but the log.txt file is not created or updated.

I did both on W7 Professional 64bit and on W8.1 64bit but no difference.
Could someone help me to understand why the difference of results manually and via Planned Activity ?
Thank in advance.

I don't use Robocopy or Planned Activity but it might perhaps be related to the current directory when the bat file is executed. If so, the other log file should be somewhere on your system and you could search for it.

I mean when you manually run the bat file you get a certain "current directory", but in the other scenario you get another directory. You can try to include a path for the log parameter or move to a certain directory with the cd command in the bat file, before the robocopy command.

We are looking to migrate a SQL database to a new server. The database is for an imaging software and has pointers to the images. We are going to move the database in the next week or two. I wanted to start copying the image files to the new server to prepare for the migration (about 300 gig of 17k files). I understand that robocopy is a good program to accomplish this. I am looking to copy all the files, folders, and subfolders over, then copy only the changes over nightly. What is the correct command line that I should use to accomplish this? Can I save it to a bat file and use windows task scheduler to have it run nightly?

Are you migrating to a server that will be running the same software? Why not use an SSIS package? That way, you can migrate the complete database to the new server and just point your programs as necessary.

Hi there,

I want to use ROBOCOPY to move any file that is older than 30 days.
I've tried this command but it seems to move the file anyway, even though the file is only 4 days old:

robocopy * C:\b2d C:\archive /mov /minage: 01-04-2011

From "/minage: 01-04-2011" i thought it would only move files that are at least 30 days or more old. But this seems to move everything.

Can anybody explain why this is happening? Is it because i used a wildcard on files, will that not look at the file age?

I have been using xcopy to copy data from a file server to a flash drive. That works OK, but after some time the flash drive is cluttered with files and folders that have been moved or deleted from the file server.

I want the flash drive to mirror what is on the file server, so I decided to give ROBOCOPY a try (version XP010 on a Windows XP computer). Here is the line in my batch file:

ROBOCOPY \\fileserver\share\frank\somefolder E:\somefolder /COPYALL /B /MIR /R:0 /W:0 /LOG:MyLogfile.txt

This works fine except the log file reports Error 3 "The system cannot find the path specified" for files in only one subfolder, and deletes all the files in that subfolder from the flash drive.

The subfolder name is "Computer" (which as far are I know isn't a reserved name), and it has the same attributes and NTFS permissions as all of the others.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

Hi all, quick question.

I have used Robocopy to back up all my photos etc. for yonks, set it so that it mirrored by files on my main laptop. I have since had the need for faster and bigger storage and so have invested in a NAS. Awesome.....BUT...

when I run my script it no longer detects that a copy of the file already exists - it thinks every file is 'newer' and so it copies everything again (not funny given it's 50Gigs!)

My script consists of several lines like's very simple(!)..

robocopy "c:\Users\Steve\my pictures" "\\LS-XHLA97\backup\sr-backup\pictures" /mir /xd *.lrdata

robocopy "c:\Users\Steve\Modo" "\\LS-XHLA97\backup\sr-backup\Modo" /mir

Any ideas? Or suggestions for another way of doing this type of backup?

Problem description: after my Vista laptop crashed (hung up in windows start-up loop) I used

robocopy c:\ d:\complete /mir ..... from the restore cmd prompt to make a backup of ca. 50gb to external hdd.

I then installed Windows 7 on the machine and used

robocopy d:\complete c:\complete /mir ... so I would be able to pull whatever folder I need to the new system.

The problem is the in both version I can see robocopy in the cmd shell copying the files in their respective folder hierarchy (which takes ages!). But on both, C: and D:\complete, I only see a folder "4d0a0xxxxx00e8e4c7332a3a394c". Right-click on the folder gives a size of approx. 6mb only, although my c: hdd space was reduced by ca. 50gb???? So, I assume the restore did work, and this is a permission problem.

I tried to take ownership of the folder under the new system to no avail. (just to clarify: i use the same username and pwd under win7 as under vista, and lost pwd is not an issue, in case i would need it to gain access)

All input highly appreciated! Thanks,

I've been using Robocopy for a while now and I have found it to be a simple and mostly efficient tool to mirror contents from one drive to another, and I've created a couple of batch files to simplify typing in parameters, like "AF ? ?" to copy my data files from one drive to another.

The thing is, for the last two days my data contents have been mirrored to my HDD partitions and a USB device absolutely fine - only a few files have been modified each time and I can rest assured that the contents are identical. The whole process has only taken a few moments.

But last night, the clocks went back and then earlier today I ran Robocopy once again to mirror my data contents. The HDD copy went without a hitch, but when running it to mirror contents to the USB device it started to recopy EVERYTHING over to it, naming all the files "Older"! What's more, I check the "modified" date/times on both sides and they're identical! I can only assume that the change in the clock from yesterday is the cause, and something unique to FAT32 file format (which the USB is).

The least I want to do is not to copy files with an older timestamp on top of new ones (if that's what's happening) so is there a way I can still use /MIR and use the /XO (exclude older) switch as well?

A:RoboCopy Query

Robocopy doesn't rename files.

Welcome to TSG!

For this, I'd use RenameMaster, and just remove the last 9 characters of the file name.

It's on the Scripting tab, about 8th item down, Remove Beginning/Ending

If this is a daily occurrence, you could write a batch file to remove the date after all the files are copied. Not too hard to just remove the last 9 characteers in a name.
If you need to check for resulting duplicates or confirm it's actually an underscore followed by a date it would get more complex.
Setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion
Set _Folder=C:\Location of Files
PushD %_Folder%
For /F "Tokens=* Delims=" %%I In ('Dir /B "%_Folder%\*.*"') Do (
Set _Fname=%%~nI
Rename "%%I" "!_Fname:~0,-9!%%~xI"

With the Robocopy command of Windows 8.x, how do I do a copy of a file (renaming it) in the same directory of the source file?

A:Robocopy and same directory

You can't. Use copy or xcopy if you want to rename.
xcopy c:\test\old.txt c:\test\new.txt

Note xcopy will always prompt you with "Does c:\test\new.txt specify a file name or a directory name on the target" so you would probably be better off with
copy /v c:\test\old.txt c:\test\new.txt

where the /v verifies the copy.

I've just recently realized that copying folders to a backup hard drive resets their "created" date. Should my computer ever crash, all my backup files will state to have just been created on that certain date.

Me, being the organize-freak I am, have been looking for a solution so my backed up files can have the same time stamps as on my computer right now.

I've done a little searching, and have found that people always recommend Robocopy. Problem is, I can't understand a word of the tutorials. Is there anyone with a layman's explanation for how to run Robocopy to carry out what I want?

And also just for the heck of it, is Robocopy the only solution? Is there some sort of back up program on Windows 7 that can do that?

Hello balubeto,

You can trythis:
First, create a new folder named "Test" under "C:\Test\Media", then enter the following code:
robocopy c:\Test c:\Test\Media\Test /move

If you want to move the whole "Test" directory, you cannot do it because the location you want is still under "Test" directory.
