Hi there,
My work laptop was being changed from a Dell to a Lenovo and I was using Windows Backup & Restore to backup my important documents and emails. I took a final backup to my external hard drive before handing my old laptop to IT.
Once I restored all my files I noticed the following;
1. Some files were not the latest versions, i.e. they were a month old.
2. Some subfolders simply weren't there. I had two subfolder in one of my folders and only one was resotred and not the other. I made sure that I restored from the latest backup file.
Any ideas why this happened? I have lost faith in this program and am now looking for alternate soultions.
I have no idea why it happened, but here are some alternatives for file and folder backup:
Karen's Replicator
Synctoy
Second Copy
FolderClone
Syncback
Freefilesync
None of these back up your Windows installation---they are for individual files and folders only.
I had a minor catastrophe last week. After updating a motherboard: Vista decided to not start anymore. It gave up the blue screen of death and restart right after the boot.
Someone on this board told me it could be a chipset driver problem, and to use a PE disc to install the chipset drivers.
http://www.techsupportforum.com/f15/...ml#post2147054
I started by making another Vista installation to create a PE disk -- using WAIK-- in the hopes of saving the original installation.
QUESTION:
Supposing that updating the chipset drivers did not help, and I couldn't make the first installation start up successfully, can I at least transfer my system settings and the registry from my original installation?
I never backed up my system...and it'd be a huge waste to have to install all of my programs again. But I have access to everything in the original installation.
So...please help.
Judging by the amount of OS' you have ,you probably deleted the recovery partition if there was one. Without that option I would say there is no way to do what you are asking.
Vista just kicked your [email protected]#!
PS. You don't want to use this registry anyways. As soon as you load this registry you will have the exact same issue.
Hi:
I have a Win 7 Enterprise Pro x64 laptop. Most of the files in my recycler/recycle bin mysteriously disappeared a few days back (I am guessing some OS quirk since desktop.ini also seems to have been modified then, though everything is still running smoothly).
So I want to get those files back. In my weekly backup to an external HDD using Win 7's built-in Backup and Restore I thought I have the recycler backed up:
Control Panel > Backup and Restore > Options > Change Backup Settings > Select where you want to save your backup > Where do you want to back up?: Let me choose > What do you want to back up?: Computer, Local Disk (C:, $RecycleBin is checked (my HD is partitioned and I also have the D: $RecycleBin selected here)
But when I select
Control Panel > Backup and Restore > Restore my files > Browse for files (or Browse for folders)
I get a explorer like screen which lists in the title bar,
Backup on <location> > Backup of C:
and lists all other folders I checked off in the Backup in the last paragraph but not the $RecycleBin folder.
Note that I have "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" selected and "Hide protected operating system files" unchecked in folder options (so for example ProgramData is listed in the folders in the last paragraph). I also am able to restore other files from my backup so I am rather sure the backup is not corrupted.
Is there someway to find and restore the recycler files or is this... Read more
Sorry to bump this but hoping someone might have a suggestion on this (or even to tell me that it is not possible to restore files from the recycler)

Hi,
I did a full backup using vista backup and recovery centre onto a seagate 160gb usb drive. The backup completed successfully so I rebuilt the machine.
On trying to rebuild, I run bakup and restore center and it cant even see the drive (it can see the C partition, the E (recovery) partition and nothing else. It doesnt see the D (Data Partition) or the USB device.)
Tried copying it to the E partition and forcing it to use it but get backup location not found which is mentioned elsewhere as an issue with mediaid.bin.
any ideas, i now have a shiny sparkly new machine with no data on it.
The data is there in a compressed form but id much rather restore properly.
grateful for any help.
Cheers
Hi, I had critical errors occur that kept me from logging onto my windows account (the only profile on my computer was the admin account) on my 32bit vista home premium install. This forced me to do a complete wipe and restore from the startup menu and I made a backup when prompted to in the process of the complete restore. I have this backup folder on my external hd but I can't seem to restore the files from it. I found some tutorials on the forums about restoring from a "backup set" but my backup can't be found using the backup and restore center. The folder on my hd is called "G:\MINWINPC\Backup Files 2010-11-18 182844" and I can't seem to figure out how to restore from it.
Issue solved.
Hi convert,
Welcome to Vista Forums!
Here's an article on the restore procedure: Restore Backup Files
Just to make sure you're doing it right. It's a selective restore of a full or selective backup (not a complete restore of a complete backup) - but since you did a full backup it matches your process closer than a complete restore would.

I also found the following (but don't know if it's true or not):
1. After starting "Backup and Restore Center"
2. I selected "Advanced Restore"

4. Selected "Files from a backup made on a different computer"
5. In the Dialog stating "Select the location of the backup to restore", select "Hard disk, CD or DVD......"
6. Under the drop-down box, select your drive/partition and continue
7. If there are any backups on your drive, it will show a list of them.

My laptop is currently running Windows 10 Anniversary Update and I have the Windows Disc from which I have installed this window but now I have installed bunch of Apps and installed Windows Updates. I want to backup all of my Apps, Settings and Updates. If I ever install Windows 10 again I just don't want to install all those updates and apps again (I might not even remember all of the apps I have now) so How can I create a backup now so in the future whenever I want I can just restore back to this point? Should I create a System Image or System Restore (Restore Point) or a Recovery Drive or Backup and Restore (Windows 7) ? I don't know which one is the right for me because I have never done any Backup, Restore or Recovery. Please Help.
More repliesI TRIED TO RESTORE MY COMPUTER TO AN EARLIER TIME (ABOUT 4 DAYS AGO). I THOUGHT IT WORKED BUT WHEN I TRIED TO LOG ON, A WINDOW POPPED UP READING "YOUR SYSTEM COULD NOT RESTORE" OR SOMETHING TO THAT EFFECT. IT DIDN'T SAY WHY, BUT MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE I GOT A TROJAN HORSE THE OTHER DAY. I THINK I GOT RID OF IT BUT I ALSO THINK IT DID SOME DAMAGE. THATS WHY I WANT TO RESTORE TO A DAY BEFORE I GOT IT. PLEASE HELP. P.S. I'M NOT REAL COMPUTER SAVY.
the best way to know for sure if u got rid of it would be to run another virus scan. I' d start there then if that doesn't work I'd back your data up somehow and redo my pc cause it sounds like your registry might have been effected somehow with the virus. But I am getting ahead of myself. Run the scan and if the virus is still there, go to your antivirus website and see if it has some sort of remover for that virus.
Please help if you can. Internet Explorer kept freezing with hourglass, So, I did a system restore to return the computer settings to the last date that it worked properly. I returned it successfully, but internet explorer will not load at all now. It keeps giving me the message that it has to close because of an error and directs me to press 'end now'. I tricked it into opening through my 2Wire gateway and went to microsoft update to try and re-install the missing components. Gave me error message that windows installer was not installed or was disabled because i was in safe mode (which I was not). Are there steps I can take to correct this. 3 more repliesI accidentally closed a Google Chrome window with many tabs and for some reason I no longer have the "Reopen last closed window" option in Chrome (just reopen last closed tab).
So I went to restore the Chrome state from my tape backup, but for the first time since I started a tape rotation, Yosemite backup insisted on getting every single backup tape I ever used even though all required data was on a single tape, there didn't seem to be a way for it to make it understand all the data was on one tape. I think if I forced it to use just the correct tape, it restored to what seemed to be several weeks ago, even though a backup from the day before was on the tape.
I ended up restoring it from my second emergency backup that's done to a removable hard drive.
I clearly don't understand how to do the restore I want in Yosemite backup, any idea why it insisted on getting like 5 tapes when all data needed was on a single tape?
Thanks

Here is the situation...
About a month ago, I did a complete Factory Restore on my HP desktop and returned it to it's factory condition. After removing the bloatware and performing all the necessary Windows Updates, the Factory Restore process went off without any issues.
Today, however, I needed to use System Restore due to an issue I was having with multiple monitors that I just couldn't figure out. So, I went into System Restore and found a "Date andTime" of a restore point that was right around the same time I did the Factory Restore. That Restore Point was also the oldest and since I knew it was a known & good restore point, I decided to use it. That restore point "Description" was labeled "System Image Restore Point" and the "Type" was labeled "Backup." (See Image)
I don't recall setting up or doing any backups although, between Windows Backup, Norton Backup and HP's Backup utilities some type of backup obviously happened. Hi,
My daughter's friend's computer was riddled with viruses and I offered to help. I got down to one virus (internet speed monitor toolbar at the left of internet explorer) and tried to run combofix. I somehow parlayed combofix into a \windows\system32\config\system error and could not boot to windows. I then restored windows xp home edition which gave me the option to save all personal files in C:\My Backup -- 08-01-05 0832PM. The computer now boots but I am unsure of how to restore the personal files and settings. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi recently i had to use samsung recovery to restore my laptop, before the recovery began i was advised to back up any files i wanted to keep as this would clear everything from the laptop, after doing this, and after the recovery prosess, i now have a smooth running laptop but i dont know where to find or how to restore these back up files. please can you help me.
Many thanks
Ok, I'll explain my situation:
So I have a macbook pro, and I use bootcamp to install Windows 7 on a partition. I prefer Windows, so the Windows partition is larger than OS X, though I find it advantageous to have both. Anyway, I recently picked up Windows 7 Ultimate, and at the time I had 7 Home Premium on the partition. I backed up everything, deleted the partition, etc etc.
The first time I installed 7 Ultimate, everything worked out, but I wanted to make the partition bigger again. So, I backed up what I had on 7 Ultimate, formatted the partition, then made it larger. Blah, blah, blah, reinstalled Ultimate, everything is working fine. Now, trying to restore my files this time, I'll go to backup and restore and it won't show my external hard drive as a backup and restore location when I click "select another backup to restore files from". So, I dragged the backup from my hard drive to the desktop to see if I could do that at all. Still nothing, even when I click on the backup itself, it will ask restore files or cancel and I click restore files, then it just brings up the backup location window again.
Is my only option to browse each backup file individually and bring them onto the computer? I have about 47 zip files in the backup. PLEASE help, I'm getting very frustrated.
You are probably best advised to do it manually. All Windows backup facilities are capririous - that's why I never use them any more. There are much better options.
4 more repliesHI,
I have three DVD's with backup files on they were all created at the same time back in 2006. they are files from an external each disk has two files on and they number from 1 to 6.
I want to restore the files onto an external I just purchased, so I downloaded the trial version of backup NOW! EZ.
the files are now recognised, but still not restoring. when I double click the first file the program opens, I change the destination drive nad click restore - nothing is showing in any of the boxes at this time - and it tells me I need to select a valid project. So I click on the folder symbol and select the DVD drive, it only shows the disk as DOCS. I click on it and the box clears but nothing shows in the restore pg, I click restore and it them says failed to restore...
any suggestions on what to do now?
thanks
Fi
Please anyone, if I have posted in the incorrect area - please put me right.
I have also spotted a few errors in my original request - the DVD's were from 2009 (not 06)
the external I brought is to replace the one that crashed (the DVD's are the back up of it)
I have tried opening them several times, with no luck.
should it matter in which order I open them?
do I need to have them all open at the same time?
what am I doing wrong?
any other program that I could use to try opening them?
please and thank you

I have an external hard drive that has two sets of backups (using Win 7 Backup & Restore). One set of backups is for my current PC (running Win10 after upgrade from Win 7) and another set of backups is for my previous PC (running Win 7). I'd like to look for something in the backups of the previous PC but I can't see how to get Win 7 Backup & Restore to access the older backups.
Is this doable?

PLEASE......I REALLY NEED SOME HELP HERE!
I had a series of issues and had to reinstall Vista. Required taking PC apart and removing HDDs C (operation) and D (backup). Long story short I installed Vista onto D (backup) instead of C.
In the process of moving, copying and deletiing files, I found a Backup Set 2010-06-25 which has two subfolders - a Backup File 2010-10-03 (which has 113 compressed folders) and a Catalogs. In the Catalogs folder is a single GlobalCatalog file. The 113 folders areGlobalCatalog file is dated and timestamped sequentially.
When I click on GlobalCatalog it opens Backup Status and Restore, but it says there are no backups available on this computer.
I tried copying the 113 folders onto a different drive but I get the same result with Advanced Restore - no backup files on the drive.
I'd REALLY love to get these files back. Does anyone have any suggestions?
You could try some of the options listed here.

I had to reinstall Vista Business x32 on my computer to solve several issues. Prior to doing so I did a complete backup to an external HD. When I go to restore, I can find the drive and the file but I get the error code 0x80070015. I goggled for help and found this:get error code 0x80070015 when I try to backup win.7 which I tried. In safe mode I am told that the restore feature is available. The second part of it I have no idea as to what is being said. Any suggestions as to how to get my files back?

I have taken a full (Image ?) backup of both my laptops to an external expansion drive.
I am now trying to recover some files and folders from one of the backups.
I have some folders in the C:\ root directory and some in the C:\users\fred\applications folder.
I cannot get the restore program to select the folder in the C:\ root, and whilst I can search for the folder called Applications in the C:\users\fred the restore program will not show all the folders under the user fred when browsing.
I've tried the search, browse, folders and files etc. but Micrsoft apear to assume that all users will only use the half dozen standard document music, video folders.
Does any body know how I can make Microsoft Windows 7 restore show all the folders when browsing?
I have read the help before posting this issue.

Wife's 64-bit Vista HP laptop, which has been junk ever since we got it a few years ago, is stuck on the latest Microsoft update. Everytime we try to start the laptop, it goes to the update screen, gets to update #3 of 3, then says "welcome" very quickly, before saying "Windows is now shutting down". Then, it doesn't shut down. The screen goes black, briefly, and the cycle starts over. I've tried starting in Safe Mode (all 3 options), and still get stuck on the update cycle.
I did a disk check. Took hours, but didn't help.
I went to system recovery, and then selected system restore, but it said I had to leave system recovery to start system restore, but didn't explain how to get to system restore w/o going through system recovery.

Hi all,
I have recently had to reinstall vista on my laptop but I have a problem reinstalling all of my files to their original location from an external hard drive. I used the vista backup and restore centre feature to backup the files, but I can't restore the files using the restore feature. the files are definitely on the external hard drive at different backup dates but I keep getting a message that the backup files can't be found-check your hardware configuration or restore from a different backup (0x8100001A). can anyone help please as nothing seems to be working although to my own admission I'm not very good with computers. why can't Microsoft make things easy for people like me. what could be simpler than a backup button to back up files and a restore button to restore them.

Hi all,
Hoping for a bit of advice regarding using backups to restore data.
I have recently had a partial HDD failure on my data drive, it is not fully backed up but my essentials are.
I am currently xcopying the contents to a replacement HDD (which seems like it is going to take several hours as every times it hits a bad file it sits around for a few minutes deciding what to do...).
Looking at the output I would estimate 2 - 5% of the files are failing CRC, other files seems to be copying across so far but of these some are also corrupted (somehow without CRC errors ) - such as noticeably corrupt .jpgs that have grey/random colours for the bottom part of the image).
Basically to summarise I'm not exactly sure how bad the damage is.
When the copy is completed I want to restore from backup anything I can but I am not sure how to determine what to copy over.
I have the following situations:
Non-backed up files - These are non-essentials e.g. games saves, nice to have but not the end of the world.
If they are corrupt I should probably remove them (is there a way to tell / do this)?
Otherwise keep them.
Thanks,
Ryulin

Hello techamni, and welcome to TSG...
How did you do the backup?
Did you use a backup program application. If so, what program?
OR
Did you simply copy the files to the pin drive?
I recently purchased Windows 7 Professional. I went with professional instead of home premium because both were $30 (student discount) and I thought a clean install of windows (current version: vista home premium) shouldn't be too hard.
I decided to partition my hard drive however, to dual boot vista and windows 7. The reason I did this was to make sure I got everything restored onto the Windows 7 partition before deleting vista.
But, I just found out that Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore isn't available on Vista Home Premium, which I find absurd. Does anyone know how I can go about restoring all my files onto Windows 7? Am I stuck doing everything manually?
Assuming you have already installed Windows 7 onto one partition and Vista is on another and you want to restore your personal files to the Windows 7 partition, then yes--restore them manually. Typically by drag and drop or send or whatever your normally use.
If you are not talking about personal files, that is another question.
If you've ever backed up your files and been unable to access the data you know it can be very frustrating. Often times users will attempt to retrieve their data from the discs only to find that one of the discs does not work. At first glance this appears to mean that you can not get back to your data. Luckily there is a workaround. This thread applies to backup CDs created using the "backup" feature of the HP System Recovery available through the F11 menu during boot. For more information on this feature take a look at this document. You will need to download and install 7-ZIP. Here is a direct link to their site. After installing 7-ZIP launch the program and navigate to your CD drive. You should then see a series of files named *number*.WIM. Double click on the first of these files and it will open showing your C: drive. You can then navigate through the files and select the ones you'd like to keep. To keep the files simply select them and click the "extract" button at the top of the application.
I hope some of you find this helpful!

3 files were created: .pch, 001.pce, and 002.pce and each file is approx 2 GB. How do I open these files? I did some research and didn't come to a conclusion because backup files are supposed to be .bkf
I was able to mount the vhd file and recover some of the files in there, but I still need some very important docs from the current backup, which is hidden in those files. Anybody know how I can open them?
Please, please help! I would appreciate it very much. Documents are court case files!
Hi,
My daughter's friend's computer was riddled with viruses and I offered to help.
Hello,
After doing the initial Backup, as files change on my Computer (Updates, more new files, edit old files), how do I save - backup so the old original Backup is changed accordingly without my having to do a complete Backup every time?
In other words does Backup identify new files and just copy them instead of a complete repeat of a total new Backup?

I have two Windows 7 machines, 1. 32 bit windows Home edition & 2. Windows 64 bit Ultimate. Is it the same method for both?
Thanks
I just used "system restore with backup" on my Windows XP SP2 eMachine T3104 because the computer was missing a startup dll file. I am back in windows, but the Hard Drive C: says that there are only 252MB left out of 90GB. I checked the six folders in the C:Drive and only one of the folders, "Backup Folder:, says it has 27GB in it.
Two questions:
1. where are the other 63GB?
2. Where are my files. I performed a search for .jpg and .mp3 and could not find any of my files I had on the PC. So how can I recover the files?
I tried using the System Restore function but it is looking for a .bkf file and there isn't one!
Try going to My Computer open it select your C: drive right click on it then select properties click on Disk Cleanup check all then click on ok. This may take some time. This will clean up your hard drive. When you are done with that also try CCleaner, this will do the same as above but it will do a more in-depth cleaning of your hard drive (Note do not use the Registry Cleaner on CCleaner not recommended by us Microsoft Support Team) Which is all safe.
5 more repliesOk, so recently I had to reformat my Windows 8 Pro ultrabook. I tried to refresh the OS, restore from a previous restore point and reinstall the OS before I had to format it. Unfortunately none of the previous methods worked as I could not get past an unending start up screen or a blue screen error. When I tried to reinstall the OS it backed up all my user files to an external hard drive in an .inp file format. In that folder location it also created a migr.xml and include.xml file. After going through the include.xml file in a text editor I saw all my files that were lost were in the .inp archives. Is there anyway to retrieve those files?
I know this is about a year too late, but if anyone else runs into this problem (like I did) there is a simple solution. Go to this dell website:
www.dell.com/.../en
and download the MigRestore software, this will enable you to recover the INP.files within your backup folder. Dell Backup and Restore software will not recover files that contain the XML document files which is a major flaw of course.
I spend hours looking for the solution, so hopefully this will save someone some time.

I backed up my My Document files using XP Home Edition to an external HD using the Backup utility program included with the OS. I installed XP Pro on my notebook and ran the Restore files, and files are missing. For example, in My Pictures, the subfolders are there, but not the pictures in the subfolders. But I don't have these problems with My Music files.
Is there anything I can do to find these missing files particulary my pictures, or are they lost. Got any ideas of salvaging them?
My hard disk was recently re-imaged as part of a laptop repair. I had backed up my files using Windoes Live OneCare. I then did a restore using Windows Live OneCare. I then tried to Import the restored Mail file, it seemed to work, but when I looked, my old messages were not there. The Imported file structure was there, but no messages. Can any one help me restore my old messages?
Thanks
After doing a restore I lost some important emails. Is there any way to get them back? Can I restore my computer to an even earlier time? I did this, I thought it was an earlier time, but it may not have been. It may have been the same restore point in fact.
If I restored my computer to an even earlier time would this restore the emails I lost?
If not is there any other way to get the emails? My backup drive is my E: drive and I tried getting the emails from there, but you know how microsoft outlook is , i just don't know how to do it. Is there anything I can do?
Maybe a system restore? I haven't tried that, although it's been a little while, I'd hate to lose something else :(. It would be worth it though to get the emails back.
Thanks a lot.
Brad
you should be able to reverse the restore if its what cause the lost of emails. However, normally your emails are safe during a restore.
you could also do a search and see if it finds your pst files. see this for more info
OK, so a couple of days ago, my HP desktop crashed and then went through the whole System Recovery loop(I couldn't login to Safe mode, wouldn't let me past the System Recovery Screen). Well I backed up the entire C drive using Backup your files in the menu. Then it shows you all the file types it will back up; i.e photos, videos, e-mails and bookmarks. So I did that to an external hard drive and it comes out to 143GB.
Then I did a factory restore to my desktop.
Now comes my problem. I've been able to copy everything from the external hard drive using RecoveryMgr.exe which opens the WIM files and saves them to my C: hard drive under System Recovery Files. However it does not seem to work when it comes to putting in my old Thunderbird e-mails, contacts and such or in Firefox to restore my bookmarks, saved passwords. Any help would be most appreciative. Thank you
A default Firefox installation has all configuration info including bookmarks in C:\Users\your user name\appdata\roaming\ in a folder called Mozilla.
A default Thunderbird installation has all configuration info including email in C:\Users\your user name\appdata\roaming\ in a folder called Thunderbird.
If those folders got backed up, you should be able to drill down to them and restore.
I assume you used Windows Backup to do the back up. I have no idea if it will include those folders.
If those folders from your original installation still survive, you can restore by copying them to the same location on new Thunderbird/Firefox installations, over-writing the new folders created when you reinstall Thunderbird/Firefox.
It's a good practice to back up the Mozilla and Thunderbird folders periodically as a matter of course--just as you would any other data.
Hi all,
my Latitude E6540 refused to boot this morning and all automatic repair options failed. No sweat I thought and installed a Windows System Image created about a month ago. Now I proceeded to restore the missing data using DBR - I'm doing automatic daily backups - only to find out that this software apparently requires a system backup to work. The problem is that after the last update, DBR refused to accept my Toshiba usb hard drive for system backups, stating that this media device could not be used for system backups - that's why I created a Windows System Image. Nowhere does it state that DBR does not backup data at all if a different software is used for system backups. It seems to me that this is a pretty sh.... piece of software (I bought the premium version). I have learned it the hard way. From now on I will not rely anymore on Dell software for backups. Just thought I'd let everybody know.
Hi. I'm using 500GB hdd(source) and 500GB ssd(destination) and I've some questions:
1. I Did 1:1 copy of disc (in norton GHOST) and on destination disk system restore is telling that i don't have restore points. Why?
2. Then On source disc I was trying to unlock some disc space by entering System Volume Information folder and deleting some files. I deleted all files larger than 3GB except one latest and one oldest. Now is like on destionation disc - system restore is telling that i don't have restore points. Why?

I have a Gateway NV78 running windows 7 home premium 64 bit OS. I can't create restore points or do image backups on this computer. Plenty of room on C: drive and on the external drive I?m backing up to for image backups. When I try to create a restore point, I get the error 'The restore point could not be created for the following reason The specified object was not found (0x80042308). It runs for about two minutes before this message. I see under the event log the following errors:

Ntfs 57 - The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.
atapi 11 - The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0
I have always had problems with this computer concerning backups and restore points.
I have taken the following steps:
1. Did a fresh intall of the entire system from the Gateway factory installed partition. Tried to back up - no go.
2. Disabled all firewalls and antivirus software
3. run chkdsk \R - disk is clean.
4. Ran SFC \scannow - file system is clean.
5. Got into services and made sure that VSS and SPP were set to run automatically. Stopped both and restarted. Still no go.
5. Checked vssadmin - All writers are OK before attempting to set restore point. Microsoft is the only provider. After attemping to create restore point, the following writers have timed out: task scheduler writer, system writer, WMI writer, COM+ REGDB writer, MS Servic... Read more
Hello mag45, welcome to Seven Forums!
I'm not much help with your issue right now I'm afraid, so I'm just going to put this out there for you to consider; I would suggest a complete wipe of the Hard Disk Drive but that will over-write all data on the HDD for good.
After you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media; if you can find an exact Windows version that the PC shipped with you can do a clean install using the activation key on the COA sticker attached to the PC though it may require a robo-call to MS to sort the OEM batch-key.
How to Activate Windows 7 by Phone
If you can't find an exact same version, you could use the info in this tutorial to create an "all versions" installer of any version Windows installer, to install using the same method I posted above.

After you have made backups of everything you care to save, the best method is to do a complete wipe (secure erase) of the entire Hard Disk Drive first, it over-writes everything, all the old Windows code including all the old drivers/programs, giving you the best possible space to install Windows to.

Well I had to restore my computer. I had a pretty bad virus and I didn't want to bother removing it. I created a backup of My Documents and everything through the computer.
When I went to access these documents gives me a box which says:
C:\My Backup -- 10-05-30 0836PM\Documents and Settings\Owner is not accessible.
Access is denied.
So after combing google, I tried to enter safemode (I'm on XP Home) and give it permissions or whatever via the security tab. I wasn't sure which account to use (there were two when I loaded safemode, Administrator and Owner). I tried administrator first and when I gave it all the permissions, it froze. Same thing with owner when I tried it today.
Do I have any other options? I really would like some of that stuff back.
Thanks in advance!
So you tried to "take ownership" of the folder and all it's contents? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
Are you saying that the folder is on the new computer now, or is it "stuck" on an external drive? If on an external drive I'd try using the command prompt's XCOPY command.
xcopy "e:\folder\*" c:\test /cevwh /g
(this will copy everything from folder (on the E drive) to a folder named ?test? on the C drive.
Using Win 7 Backup & Restore. During a backup, filenames are flashed right below the progress bar.
Are these the names of files being included in the backup?
I see tons of filenames of files that should not be backed up since they have never changed. I know that for a base level (terminology?) all files would be included but in the subsequent incremental backups only changed files should be included.
So, why do I see so many filenames for unchanged files during an incremental backup?

I don't use Windows Backup and Restore, but my guess would be that what you are seeing is simply an analysis of the files that's necessary for comparison purposes. NOT files that are being written to a disk. Only a portion of those analyzed will be written---those that are new and those that are modified. Which can only be determined after a comparison.
I could be entirely wrong, but that's how backup apps generally work. Read all, compare all, write some.
Not sure if this is possible but, my grandma backed up her laptop (then running windows 7 home) to her external hard drive, about two days ago, her computer stopped working and I had to reinstall windows 7, she then upgraded to windows 8 and asked if she could get her files back, I said I could try, is there some way to restore them? or at least access the backup info and somehow copy the files to there respectful places? NOTE: On her external hard drive are some hdd images, could I use those or no?
SOLVED! For anyone else's reference, just select the file with your computer name and voila, all your files.

Hi,
I was using Vista 32 bit and have everything backed up using the Windows backup tool. My 32 bit computer is completely disabled and I now have a 64 bit machine. When I try to restore my information, it gives me an error (0x80070015) and says restore did not complete and the device is not ready. Is it possible to get my files onto the new computer? If my old system were functioning I'd just manually move everything over, but that's not an option.
The Windows backup will NOT work across versions. Each version will only work the version it was made with.
I think you need to find a 32bit machine and see if your backup will restore there.
I am having problems restoring outlook 2003 .pst files to another machine. Duplicate folders are being created and I cant work out why
1st machine is running outlook 2003 on vista and I want to copy everything including message rules and account settings and replicate the original set up of outlook with all the folders etc and make an identical image on the XP machine also running outlook 2003.
Is there a simple way or program that will easily replicate everything and restore it all to the 2nd machine without changing folders or creating copy personal folders ? So that both machines show identical layouts and have identical settings and message rules
Also is there a reliable program or method of finding duplicate emails in outlook 2003 in several folders and removing them or moving them to a separate folder ?

So I just got a new computer, and I'm attempting to migrate all my files from the old computer's hard drive to the new one. So I'll list what I have tried so far:
System Image Backup: I made a system image backup of my old hard drive using the built-in Windows tool, thinking I could just pop my external hard drive into my new computer, restore from the image, and I would be good to go, right? WRONG. Apparently, Windows frowns upon using a system image from one device on another one. So that failed.Third party backup software: I've tried EaseUS and Acronis True Image, and both failed.
EaseUS: When I started the backup, the time to completion for the backup just kept going up, with no progress.Acronis True Image: the program starts the backup and gets stuck at 8.89 GB, refuses to go any further. Yes, I tried formatting and running a CHKDSK on the external hard drive. Still failed.Simple File Backup: This is where I am now. From the articles I've read, most of them only explain how to restore ONE file.
So my question to you all: Is there ANY way to simultaneously restore all of my files to my new hard drive at once? Because there is no WAY I'm doing it one by one.
Alternatively, if anyone knows of another way to create and restore a system image, that would be great as well.
Hi, if anyone can help, that would be awesome.
Had a Cryptolocker attack last Friday, encrypted all my files on my computer, so lost the lot.
Cryptolocker is now removed, but when I tried to open up my outlook email program it kept saying that the .PST file cannot be found and then Outlook shuts down again automatically.
I tried to restore my files (and I'm hoping my .PST email file) from a backup I did about 3 weeks ago, but when I try and restore the files from that, I get another message saying:
"Restore encountered a problem while validating the zip file: "NAME OF FILE". The backup file could not be found......."
My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5742G and I'm running Windows 7 and Outlook 2010. The back up is on an external 1TB harddrive.
Help please!
If I create a system image and then periodically create full backups of all drives would I be able to recover the system to the last backup? I am thinking I could recover from the system image and then recover using the backup.
Yes. Also use the previous versions feature at any time to restore a file several versions back. This works even without setting up windows backup, as restore points also create backups of your files. But windows backup will offer even more on days the backup is created. I have mine set like this:
2 internal hard drives, one is main, other is backup. Windows backup runs to it every 2 weeks and does a system image and backs up all my files. An external hard drive works well too, but then is hard to have on a schedule since you need to remember to plug it in.
I still recommend having a backup external hard drive as well, with your users folder dragged onto it just in case.
Just like time machine on apple. Of course microsoft removed this feature in windows 8, because they like to screw up good things.
When I try to back up and restore (my files) it does not complete. I get the message disk full. I tried to uncheck the (shut off and delte all files from system restore) but that does not help. When I check the amount of space available on the D drive, it shows as full, but system restore seems to work; any suggestions?
What are you using to backup your system?

I have been have some problems with my HP dv 8500 laptop. It has vista on it. I could not get any windows updates. So I backed up my files to a flashdrive and did a system recovery. Hello all, I was running vista business for a while, kinda testing it out. and decided I wanted to try vista ultimate, so i did a clean ultimate install, and when i tried to restore my pics form the external backup location it does not let me.it tells me that the back up location is not available, there is a button for restore all files to original location. when i click it , I get > the files you are trying to restore have security permissions for a user account which could not be found on this computer, please create a user accout with the same name, so the permissions will be transfered to that name. Anyway I tried that and I still get nothing. anybody have any ideas, Thanks , Ken
Can you see the folder on the drive that contains the files? If so, take ownership of the folder. Ths can be done in the Advanced section under the Security tab, or:

Hello,
I am looking to restore a complete backup in Vista. Vista is installed on a 500gb internal c: drive and the backup is installed on a physically seperate 500gb internal d: drive.
I have other files on the backup drive (outside of the backup images) that I want to be sure to keep. When trying to perform the backup, the dialog boxes are unclear as to whether or not any files will be erased from the backup drive. It just says that all files will be erased.
Will the full restore put everything on both drives as it was, or will it only affect the c: drive?
Hi infinitr, what did you use to make the backup?
1 more repliesOk, I first put explorer so I can see C:\System Volume Information. Then I move into the folder. I can create both a folder and a .txt file. But when I try to copy the restore point files themselves I get access denied. I cant seem to take owner either. I both logged on as admin and just started the explorer 'as admin'. I even did a cacls "System Volume Information" /e /p almighty:f. Still no go. I cant even see permissions on these files. Bit odd since I created them as my regular user (who is admin in a single computer environment). Any ideas, cause I ran out.
Restore points are unique in that it is much easier to designate a new location and manually create new points over trying to backup existing points. Once you have a few made Windows will automatically take over creating new ones to be designated to the new location.
Besides restore points another option besides the backup tools included in Windows would be manually exporting the entire registry as a single file. If a problem comes up that could be imported back into the registry. You can review the guide for restoration as well as backup at Registry - Backup and Restore
Recently, Windows XP could not Restore the system to Restore Points created by it, OR even to Restore Points set by third-party anti-Spyware programs.
I am using AVG Free Edition, PC Tools Spyware Doctor, and also Spyware Terminator, along with the Firewall of Windows XP, for on-line protection whilst surfing the Internet.
Additionally, CCleaner and CheckLinks ? both Freewares ? are used, once a week or so, to remove unwanted cookies, dead links, temporary files etc..
Since these Freewares also create Restore Points, I would like to know whether this affects Restoring of the system to EARLIER Restore Points created by Windows XP.
Would it be safe to run the above-mentioned Freeware programs without allowing these to create their individual Restore Points and then create new Restore Points with Windows XP ?
My Thanks, in advance for any guidance / advice that may be given in response to this Query.
Hey all,
I recently purchased a new Toshiba 1tb HDD. My old WD 1tb HDD has been giving me trouble of late. I occasionally get the BSOD. Also, on occasion, when I reboot the computer it automatically runs the chkdsk program and reports several bad clusters. However the chkdsk program never seems to flag the bad clusters, so periodically, when I reboot, it runs and reports them again.
I would like to image or backup all of the files on my problem HDD, then do a fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate 64bit (my current OS) to the new HDD, then restore the cloned or image system and program files to the new HDD. I don't want to have to go through the process of reinstalling everything again, when everything seems to be working okay. Since the Win 7 image program makes and exact image of the HDD, then to use that program would cause the new install of Win 7 Ultimate 64bit to be overwritten by the image restore. Therefore, if there should be corrupt data under a bad cluster from the old HDD, that data would not be transferred and my existing problem would be transferred to the new HDD.
On the other hand, if I do a disk clone, I am not sure that the existing programs would continue to operate on the new HDD, and would require a fresh install of each program after the fresh install of the Win 7 OS! I would have then wasted my time doing a transfer of program/data files to my newly formatted and freshly installed OS.
Does anyone know of any program (Acronis True Image, Paragon, No... Read more
Ed, sorry to break this to you but you can not restore an image of your old C drive to a new fresh install of Win7 without overwriting the fresh install. It would be a waste of time to install a fresh install and then overwrite it with an old image.
It is possible to image using Acronis to an external drive and the restoring it to a new hard disk.
You can either backup your data to an external drive and then restore to a new system but not the programs and windows special files.
I believe that Acronis won't backup bad sectors if they are giving you problems. But if your BSOD's are because some system files are on a bad sector. You might be out of luck.
I also believe that there are commercial programs that will move your programs and data to your new hard disk but haven't used any.
Maybe someone else can jump in on one of them.

I have an hp desktop running windows 7 home premium. recently I attempted to upgrade to windows 10 but something failed. I was forced to create backup cd's by the recovery manager (12 in total) AND run the restore cd provided by hp to repair my workstation. I have read numerous articles and forums that suggest booting from recovery cd 1 and also from recovery cd 12 ...that hasnt worked. The recovery manager application does appear in the recovery folder saved on disk 1 and also a configuration file, but when i click on recovery manager, the spinning pointer sits there (like its working the request) but after an hour or so , does nothing, goes right back to idle. I understand that 7-zip unzips wim. files if you want to go the long route of opening all 130 saved files and manually extracting each backed-up portion of my workstation but would really prefer to have the recovery software restore my files. what do i do??? can i get a functioning recovery manager, or is there another type of software out there that recognizes wim's and will restore my files for me.-William
More repliesHi Everyone,
I have a challenge regarding the recovery of 'offline files' in Windows 7 Professional (x64).
The challenge relates to a laptop computer that was initially setup in my companies head office (Victoria, Australia). The laptop was added to the head office Domain, and given access to a 'Shared Files' location ("S" Drive) on the head office File Server. Furthermore a section of the 'Shared Files' (the users personal documents - e.g.: Documents, Music, Pictures, etc) - called 'User Files' - was made Available Offline.
Later the user of the laptop was promoted and relocated to a satellite office (New South Wales, Australia), and no 'maintenance work' was performed on the computer before it was moved. The satellite office does not have access to the 'Shared Files' (Victoria) and it does not use the same Domain (in fact it uses a Workgroup).
For about six months the computer has been used in the new location - it still thinks that it is on the Domain, and that is has access to 'Shared Files' - so in essence everything that has been saved on the computer (to 'Documents, Music, Pictures, etc) has been saved to the CSC (Cient Side Cache).
Today the staff member using this laptop in the satellite office has bought to my attention the fact that he can no longer see 'Shared Files'.
I have Googled this issue; and came across the following instructions concerning how to 'backup' the Offline Files - Offline Files Storage Location Windows 7 - however as there is n... Read more
I used system recovery's backup tool to backup my personal files including my inbox for Windows Mail. When I tried to import the files into my new inbox after recovery, the file type for just plain old Windows Mail is not listed. Therefore the import tool doesn't see the files in the backed up Inbox. It shows Windows 7 and Windows Outlook, but not plain Jane Windows Mail. I did everything right and I have a complete backup, but now can not restore my messages because the Import tool doesn't have the correct file type. In the backed up folder all the files are .eml type. What can I do? I am running Windows Vista 64 bit.
Can you take a screenshot of what you are seeing?
1 more repliesIs it possible to resotre individual files from a full Image Backup? I Created a System Image. If this is possible, how is it done?
You certainly can with commercial products like Acronis, but I don't know about the Windows product. I would guess you can--if you can't, that would be a major shortcoming.
3 more repliesI stupidly decided that I would reset my hard drive to it's factory settings and start loading in only the program I really want. Well, it sounds easier than it was. Besides losing all of my stored passwords...things don't function the same. So I used my backup to try to get everything back, but it didn't all come back. In particular a file a really need that housed everything I've been doing to handle my father-in-laws estate since his passing. I had made a spreadsheet that retailed all of my calls , forms in and out his various holdings...like that. Is there any way I can recover this folder?
The other thing I iost were the buttons to click for EBAY, You Tube, Gmail...I'm having to look them up every time. I have tried searching for a way to add these buttons to my toolbar, but nothing,. I really wish there was a program that would let me create my dream toolbar.
So, how can I get my folder back and how can I get buttons.
I have recovered most of my passwords, but what a nightmare that was. I was going to start a password manager, but I don't know. I just keep a list.
I've seen posts on other forums discussing this issue, but the resolutions are not really directly on point...or they are so extreme they are unreasonable..unless you have lost a file that just cannot be replaced. Here goes.
Since running VISTA Ultimate I have encountered the issue where VISTA gets stuck at the WELCOME screen after entering login credentials. After having to rebuild several times because of this, I decided to get an external USB drive and back the machine up using the tool "Vista Complete PC Backup/Restore". I backed the machine up weekly. Several times the "welcome" issue appeared and I was able to restore the box back to the most current backup...without incident.
Yesterday the sticky WELCOME happened again, so I attached my USB drive and went into PC REPAIR and started the process to restore the entire PC from a backup.
I get the message Vista "Complete PC Restore" doesn't recognize backup files or something similar (no locations) and the option to enter a location manually is not available.
I rebuilt the machine using the HP recovery disks and it is now running in its base configuration, without any of my additional software or configuration.
I can see the USB drive, and I can see the directory where the backup files are held. (I named the PC to the exact name when I rebuilt it), but I still get the same message when trying to rebuild.
Any help is appreciated.
TKS.
Did you boot from you install DVD to do this?
2 more repliesHello,
I have a unique issue with a backup I am trying to restore to my PC. I am running WIN 7 Pro 64 bit and I have a backup from 10/31/11 I am trying to restore. Last week my PC was infected by the "Windows Security 2012" malware virus and my PC was caught in a boot loop. Luckily for me I backed up to an external drive so I went ahead and wipe my C: drive and re-installed windows. Everything is working great, but now I am trying to restore my user files (ie. Pictures, contacts, music, documents etc.) and I am running into an issue. See, when I restore the backup I get the file structure as it was in my old instance, but most of the files are missing. In fact all my user files are missing. I am not exactly sure why this is happening. The backup is the only thing on my external drive and it is well over 250GB. I have followed the instructions about backing up and restoring from another computer and made sure my user is the same.
Any help with this would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Hello Coleman, and welcome to Seven Forums.
You might see if you may be able to use the tutorial below to manually extract the files you wanted from the backup, and manually copy them back.
Backup - Manually Extract Files from in Vista & Windows 7
Hope this helps,

I'm trying to backup the pictures, music, and videos that are saved on my buddies laptop. He forgot the password for the main account and whenever I try to transfer files to an external hard drive, a screen pops up and tells me to it cannot transfer files without password. Is there anyway to get around this? EDIT: I thought maybe it would be important to add that the account that I'm using to get access to the files must not have permissions to change anything on the computer. Don't ask me how my friend figured out how to restrict himself from changing anything on the computer, but he did and this general lack of knowledge about computers, likely got in into the trouble, that now is going to require me to do a full restore.
Is this subject taboo or something?
Is it possible for me to work around this password? If not, I can always just lose the pictures, music, and videos... but I'm trying to avoid this.
I've been running Backups regularly using the Control Panel, Backup and Restore Center. I've recently noticed however that my movie files weren't being backed up.
The file type is '.MOD' saved by Panasonic camcorders.
The 'video' and 'additional files' boxes are checked in the settings dialog.
I spotted the problem after adding loads of movies to the computer and noticing the backup didn't need a new DVD (previous one nearly full) then I checked the backup files and '.MOI' files were copied from the folders but not the '.MOD' files.
Is there any way of getting the backup utility to recognise these files?
Thanks.
Still got this problem.
Can anyone help me with a way of defining which file types the backup will recognise.
Thanks
Hello,
I turned on my computer and realized that all of my files and programs were missing amongst all restore points. I ran Microsoft Security Essentials and no viruses were found. Is there any way to recover the lost data or is it a lost cause. I have a Toshiba, Windows 7, Intel Pentium. I am praying that I can recover this.
Thanks,
Ryan
Check your user's folder, are you using the same logon account ? Sometimes windows logon fails and you get directed to a temporary account + folders and all your files will seem missing, when instead you are not looking at your previous documents folder.
I'm not sure this is the place for this post... but,
User restored their computer data using an Access IBM protect and recovery tool.
- "IBM Rapid Restore Ultra" - I've contacted IBM PC support and all they told me was where to get hold of a manual (basic). I'm in the process of "googling" for more info.
From what I gather, this tool backs up os as well as data and allows a restore to a last "Backed Up" image.
Unfortunately the user restored "Data" to a date in "2006" and it appears to have wiped out all her latest "My Documents" and Pictures as well as Outlook data since that date.
It looks like it did what it was told. Note: 2006 was the last backup.
Question, does anyone know if there is a way to get the data back (or access it) to the time just prior to the restore. I'm hoping that the restore might do a "Backup" of the info and store it somewhere.
Any help direction appreciated.
I'm not an expert on this, and in fact just joined TSG trying to find out how to uninstall Rapid Restore. But in using RR successfully for years I've never seen any indication that it attempts to save anything when it does a restore. In fact, it seems to be careful NOT to, since one of its reasons for existence is to permit you to restore your machine back to what it was before, free of any infections you've gotten in the iterim. The warnings you get when you do a restore are pretty clear that you're going to be overwriting what you've currently got with what's been saved in the prior dataset by RR.
P.S. Any idea how to uninstall Rapid Restore? I've tried the 3 methods shown at the Lenovo site, but none of them are operative here...
It appears that I have created 2 files that system restore uses in creating restore points.
I found that by deleating on of them, system restore returns to functionalaity.
Unfortunately, I didnt make a record of the file name that gets duplicated (slightly different duplicate).
If someone knows the file created and maintaind by the system restore process, I would appreciate you letting me know what it is so I can delete one of them.
TIA
Neil
Wait what is your asking? System Restore creates restore points, which are hidden in a folder called "System Volume Information" on the root of your system drive. These restore points are actually folders inside System Volume Information, each folder contains versions of system files and data of changes to your system (such as software and hardware installs). If a problem occurs you can revert to a restore point.
If you are worried you have two restores are almost identical you can clear all the restore points leaving the most recent by going to Start (Orb on Vista)->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Disk Cleanup.
Vista - On Vista, dialog will open click "Files from all users on this computer", then on following dialog click "OK".
XP - On XP, click "OK" on the dialog that appears.
Now it will start scanning for files that can be cleaned up. When it's done scanning a new window will appear and on the top of that window there will be some tabs, click the tab labeled "More Options". Look for the section that talks about System Restore and click the Clean Up button. Then Click "OK" on the main window. This clears all the restore points except for the most recent and should resolve your duplicate restore point problem.
I do not recommend that you ever delete files or folders in the System Volume Information, as if you need that file and your system crashes you are pretty much screwed.

Hello, my computer(HP Pavilon dv6 Notebook, Windows 7 Home Premium) recently came back from a hard drive replacement and when I fully restored the new hard drive with all my old files I noticed that my main user account from before("John") is not the Administrator, and not even listed under user accounts. In fact all my restored files arent found are under this new folder also named "John" and Old My Documents, so I was wondering is there a way to restore my files EXACTLY the way they were before I had to replace the hard drive? "Exactly" meaning like a system restore, "John" user as admin and everything in its proper folders? If not, then how do I make my main user admin again and get the files where they were before?
I know that most files(word documents, music, etc) can easily be transfered just by "dragging" them under the new "Documents"/"Music" folders and so forth but how do I restore documents like Themes or Fonts that cant?
Thanks
This is also the first time restoring a computer, so sorry for being so lost. =P
If you reinstalled the OS then there is nothing you can do but start over. Replacing files does not restore accounts and or themes or fonts. You have to add all of thos bnack manually.
I recently cough a virus, and I decided to do a system restore instead of removing it.
Backed up my files, blah blah blah. Did the system restore.
Everything seemed to go well, but now I'm having several annoying problems.
The first one I noticed instantly. Everything looks blurry and stretched. It looks nothing how it looked before. I tried to change the screen resolution and the color quality, but no positive results.
The second problem I find really annoying. The windows seem to be laggy. The scrolling is laggy, the minimizing is laggy, moving the window is laggy. This didn't used to happen before I did the system restore.
The third problem is that I can't use wireless. I couldn't find the Wireless Network Connection program anywhere, so I had to look it up on search. Found it, but I couldn't open it with double click. I managed to open it by right clicking it and clicking "View Available Wireless Networks". The problem is, even if I opened it, it's not finding any networks. It immidietly tells me "No wireless networks were found in range". I click on "Refresh Network list". Again, instantly, "No wireless networks were found in range." I don't think it's trying to search for any.
All of these problems are extremely annoying. I hope you guys can help me fix them one by one.
Well - a system restore doesn't necessarily mean you are clean from any malware.
Follow these instructions and post in the appropriate forum. Our trained experts can help you further to verify your PC is clean.

I was attempting to burn a DVD with ImgBurn and the system appeared to freeze with constant hdd activity. I reset the system and noticed a slow boot to the desktop. I ran SFC /Scannow and the SFC indicated problems that it couldn't repair. I performed a System Restore and the system indicated that the System Restore was successful, but a subsequent SFC /Scannow indicated otherwise.
SFC indicates the CBS log recorded the files it couldn't repair. The most recent CBS log, compressed in a zip folder, is attached below.

I recently replaced my power source. When I turned on the machine It gave me "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"
I did a restore with the provided emachines system restore cd's,and I am still getting the message. The harddrive is being recognized in BIOS. I am running off a LINUX live cd right now.
Does anyone have any ideas? How could I check for a boot sector error on my harddisk?
Hello, so I have a slight problem with my Windows 7 after restoring it to factory configurations.
I installed Ubuntu 12.04, the installation smooth as butter, but after a few days of usage, the GRUB system screwed up. After a LOT of problems I managed to restore my Laptop to its default configuration.
Then, I tried to restore my personal files with the DVDs I made, but when the manager finished, it only showed a folder with all my files in it! And it didn't give me any option to restore these files or something!
Any clues of how to restore my data?

How did GRUB "screw up"? Need more info on that. Also, how did you restore your data from backup? You used Window backup? I always just copy data to a flash drive or DVD. Please describe the situation more completely.
What's the best practice if a System Restore operation doesn't fix the problem on the first try? Should I undo the System Restore operation and then try a different restore point or just try a different restore point?
The system recommended the most recent restore point, so I took that recommendation. But, although the system indicated that the System Restore operation was successful, SFC indicated otherwise.
I've got a few more older restore points. Should I give System Restore another shot, with an older restore point or do what?
Regards

Platform: Windows 7 (WinNT 6.00.3504)Few days ago I started getting incessant message from Norton about it disabling trojans. (never gave the name!). Noticed in task manager that I had lots of suspicious EXEs like win.exe (4 of them), winamp.exe (2 of them), debug.exe, hexdump.exe, etc.Looked in Norton's history and it has been "disabling" trojans nonstop for 4 days.Went into Notron's startup manager and disabled 40-50 suspicious startup items, most with random names like mqrtc and LzdZhfngotd... multiple instances of each. Disabled them all and restarted, but the phantom processes were back and got a windows popup dialog about a DLL that couldn't be found (random name).OK I thought, I'll just system restore to 5 days ago. Woops! "System restore has been disabled by the administrator". Scared. Regedit? 3 more repliesi want to restore my buds laptop. he had restore turned on until about 3 weeks ago he shut it off.
question: if you shut off restore does it still keep the last restore points? and is there a way to restore in safe mode (cant boot in reg mode) if restore is shut of. when i try and turn on sys restore in safe mode it say "i cant".
any suggestions?
when you turn off restore you lose all the restore points...thats why you cant use them...If you can boot in safe mode and backup all the things you can't live without...then we will try to fix the booting problem
I noticed my hard drive free space dropped, and I couldn't account for the space lost. I presumed at least some of it had to do with today's Windows Updates and the system restore point they triggered.
I used CCleaner to go and delete a couple older restore points, but I don't think I got back any space, at max a gigabyte if anything. I was wondering if anyone has an idea what is going on?
I've got three restore points, and Windows says they are using up ~80 GB and are allowed ~140 GB.
You can limit the size that System Restore uses. Limit System Restore Hard Drive Space
If you think there is space being used by something other then the hidden System Volume Information (system restore) Use Space Sniffer to find out what is being used.
Hi, I would really appreciate some advice before I go and get professional paid services. This is my business computer and I have important stock control and accountancy programs installed on it, loosing which would cause me big troubles.
Nevertheless, I was stupid enough to play around with it and try to install Magix movie edit pro 11 plus, original genuine program I bought some time ago. I thought it should be ok since it worked perfectly on my old computer. It didn't install correctly. I had to abrupt installation because everything hooked up. I tried to uninstall it, but it wouldn't allow me. Then I used Revo uninstaller pro which claimed to remove incomplete installations. I did install some other programs but I don't think they could have caused a problem.
After few days my computer won't start. It boots up to the windows logo and then freezes on a black screen with a white arrow.
I ran Start up Repair which didn't fix the problem. I also tried to do system recovery and to restore computer to the earlier point of time. For some reason I only got like 3 earlier points. I thought Windows it backing up computer regularly by default.
Start up repair returns these results:

I have windows 7. I lost my programs somehow so I did a system restore to a past date. After I restored the system my programs came back but I lost all my files under my documents. Is there a way to restore them? I've tried Recuva but got no where.
Hello Sifuentesjess and Welcome to TSF,
A system restore (From the Windows Restore Point GUI) should never ever remove personal files, so there must've been somethign else running/cleaning the system that removed those files. Either that or a malware.
If you had backup/restore features enabled, you could just retrieve it from the Previous Versions functions.
Simply rightclick the folder which contained the files > Choose Properties.
Go to the "Previous versions"-tab.
All previous backups of this folders will then be listed.
Just mark a folder/Date when the files were last there, and choose to restore them.
(If you're unsure, just mark a folder and choose the Explore/Browse button to view its content)
If this feature wasn't activated when you last had the files, and the data recovery tool didn't help you, you've lost your files.
Please make sure that you have a backup plan for the future!
I recently did a system restore and when I started it up some of the documents are gone from the desktop. Can someone help me retrieve them they where word files .
Hiyya ed and welcome mate did you try a search in Documents or even the Start search cos a system restore does not usually delete or change any of your current data ?
if they are not there then try Recuva for pirifrom that might help

If I boot the Windows 7 emergency recovery DVD it no longer finds any Windows image backups on my USB drive. I have tried it on 2 different Windows 7 PC's. I can however see the backups in the \WindowsImageBackup directory while booted from the DVD and going to the DOS prompt. The kicker is that I used these backup images before to replace hard drives on both systems. I do not know what changed. The search on the PC for the images takes only a couple seconds before failing. I have tried changing permissions and ownership on the files without success. Got any ideas?
More repliesAbout 6 files were repaired/deleted that someone from TechSupportGuy told me to delete. I do have backups in Hijackthis. How do I restore the backup?
Thanks!
Open Hijack This and click on "Config" in the lower right corner. Look at the top of that window and click on "Backups". Select the backup you wish to restore and click "Restore"
This seems to be an issue that has occured on more than one occassion.
When my laptop restarts it comes up with the error c:\windows\system32\wmnetmgr.dll and that it is not installed correctly or something like that. Therefore, my profile doesn't load up properly and loads up a temporary profile with everything lost on my hard drive.
This is such an annoying thing and I've already done all of my system restores which say that they have completed successfully, however it is always loading up with this temporary profile, which loses all data when it shuts down.
I'm a bit of a noob with these issues and any information to help me out with this would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!
You have some homework to do; review the following:

Problem: I keep getting this yellow ribbon error upon startup.
It says that Chrome didn't shut down properly and wants to restore the last session. However, closing tabs/windows and restarting Chrome will produce this same exact message. Additionally, tabs opened in Incognito will be reopened. I've went to Chrome://crashes, but I don't have a crash i.d.
What I've done: I have updated to the latest chrome version, as well as cleared browser cache/cookies. I have gone to user\appdata\local\google\chrome\userdata\default\cache and deleted that file, but the problem still persists.
I have no idea how to fix this problem and google forums isn't helpful at all.
Thank you to anyone that can offer a suggestion!
