Control Panel Backup & Restore link doesn't work

Q: Control Panel Backup & Restore link doesn't work

How can I get the Windows 7 Control Panel Backup & Restore link to work? When I click on it it does nothing

A: Control Panel Backup & Restore link doesn't work

Have you run
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
lately?
Either there is a problem in the windows file structure which sfc will check for, or a service the feature depends on has been disabled.
That's about the only two scenarios I can come up with.

I have a 256Gb SSD partitioned into 121GB (Volume label left at default "Local Disk") (C:) and 116 GB Data (D:) (sizes select by default in initial access to Disk Management). I also have an internal SATA 6Gb 500Gb Backup (E:).

Apparently this label of my E: drive is both "meaningless" and "meaningful" for Win7:

When I wanted to make my first SystemImage, Win7 suggested that my destination choice was not a good idea. It makes perfect sense for me, but I can see that Win7 might prefer an external USB hdd.

But I went ahead and made the System Image on Backup (E:) and it appears to be in good order: I allowed Win7 to name it with its default folder "WindowsImageBackup" with the subfolder named from my system name, with add'l subfolders:

Backup 2012-01-03 (+ some 6 digit id #, I presume)
Catalog
SPPMetadataCache

However, this System Image is not recognized in Control Panel\...\Backup and Restore and the "Select another backup to restore files from" dialog does not recognize the E: drive nor allow me any means to select it.

However, if I select "Setup backup" Win7 immediately selects Backup (E:), adding the comment [Recommended].

I can see the statement near the top of the dialog about recommending a backup on an external drive, but this is not what I consider an intelligent backup approach. I prefer to make both internal backups on my additional internal hdd and external usb hdd copies of backups. ... Read more

A:System Image is not recognized in Control Panel\...\Backup and Restore

in backup and restore there is a option to create a rescue disc. you will need this disc to access the system image should the system crash. You can backup an image to your external hdd and access it with the bootable rescue disc.

Well I dont know what caused this but I can open the control panel but when I click on something eg. "uninstall a program" or "change the theme" there comes a message saying windows explorer has stopped working, thus restarting explorer.exe

I'm running windows 7 professional 32 bit.

Edit: it also crashes when I reopen the control panel when the control panel is already open.

I'm running Microsoft professional, Internet Explorer and have a Google toolbar.

All attempts to add software are blocked and the add remove feature in the control panel won't open. For example, I can't update my old version of Itunes because the popup for the update gets blocked. I know about the popup blocker in the Google toolbar, and how to handle that, that isn't the problem. In Internet Options, the security setting is at medium and under the advanced tab I reset all options to default.

A:Add Remove In Control Panel Doesn't Work

What version of IE are you using?

What other security programs do you have on the computer? It's possible that one of them is blocking the pop-ups.

Windows10 Recovery USB Media/Drive - Control Panel ( Backup & Restore )

I have upgraded to Windows 10 from Widows 8.1 (pre-installed) , on my "ACER Aspire E1 472P- 6491" laptop by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer and successfully activated Windows 10 . I do not have a Windows (8.1 or 10) product key , as the Windows was pre-loaded on the laptop .

I just spent the last 30 hours downloading and installing all the update for 8.1 on my new Acer Laptop. Now the system will not shut down, update will not open and restore does not work. Also the sound system does not work. I've tried the recovery options but all I get is unending aero. Shutdown produces background apps still running and will only work if I physically turn off the power.

I'm at a loss to know what to do next. I did not expect to have these problems with a brand new system and by following all the proper procedures for updating.

Problem: Windows Backup and Restore does not work. When the link is clicked, nothing happens.

Background: At one point Acronis True Image Home was installed. The uninstaller left behind an entry in key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B98A2BEA-7D42-4558-8BD1-832F41BAC6FD} that continues to point to Acronis True Image Home.

My research indicates that this is an issue known to Acronis. They have made a "fix" available which is supposed to restore Windws 7 Backup and Restore functionality. The "fix" is a registry entry "ResourceDLL.reg" which is to be merged into the registry.

However. when merger is attempted the message "Cannot import ...... Some keys are open by the system or other processes" is displayed.

I have tried starting the computer is Safe Mode but the same message is displayed.

I have tried to manually make the change via regedit but get the message "Cannot edit Rescorce.DLL. Error writing the value's new contents.

Ownership and permissions for the key have been changed.

These have had no effect - the same message is shown when merger/editing is attempted.

It would appear that the change must be entered before Windows 7 starts but I have been unable to find a way to do that.

Looking for assistance in getting the Acronis "fix" implemented.

Thx,
C.

ALSO -FYI! I saw the previous post about this issue, but the solution posted does not work on my machine even after making the ownership and permissions changes suggested.

Hi!

This problem occurred a few years ago. I made a backup file to my external HD. Then I thought that I would make a different kind of a file (different content), so I deleted the first one and started to make the new one. Now the Backup didn't start! I click 'Back up now', nothing happens. From that on, any button or link (for example 'Turn on schedule') hasn't worked on that backup panel.

So, what to do? This isn't the end of the world. I can use other programmes, but I want my OS to work seamlessly.

I was wondering if there is a way in Windows 7 to find the shortcut path to Control panel.

To explain what I am trying to do, I use the program RocketDock for the icons on my desktop. With my laptop, I have the text size at 100% when out and about with it, and I have it on 150% when I am at home and I hook it up to my 42" LCD. So I wanted to create a button/shortcut path to the "Make text and other items larger" link in the control panel.

Not sure if there is a way to get that path or not but if someone knows would you please give me a reply? Thanks

A:Link To Path Within Control Panel

Welcome to the seven forums turbo!

Where do you want this shortcut?

The path to contol panel is: %SystemRoot%\system32\control.exe

You can also add it to the right side of the Start Menu easily... right click the taskbar and choose properties, then choose the Start Menu tab... and click Customize... then put a check next to Display as Link inder Control Panel.

Hope this helps you!

How can I get in? Thanks.

Check for your router model here: http://www.default-password.info/d-link/

If you still are not able to get in, then you may need to do a hard reset on your router in order to reset your password back to the default.

Hi everyone, i'm new to this community and i'll help in what i can. As for now my comp is running almost perfect, just a little thing annoys me and that's my question about.

I don't know how or when did my control panel link together with the printers link on my start menu got broken.

I use the classical view for the start menu and i have to click on both links or icons to open those sections. When I do it tells me there is no program asosiated with the file and tells me to create one for it.

Since i couldn't make it work undoing any changes i've done the last time with JV16 Powertools (which i use for reg manteinance) i tried changing the view style of the start menu and I can enter both sections with no problem, also if i stay with the classical view but chhose to have control panel and printers expanded in the start menu i can access those sections with no problems.

Everything works fine but this 2 links on my comp.
I have a AMD 64 3000 with 1GB ram running WIN XP PRO SP3
I use AVG (check with panda online regularly) for viruses, Spybot S&D for spyware, ccleaner for thrash files, perfect disk for defragmenting and used to have your uninstaller to remove software, but now i'm trying revo uninstaller.

I'm most certain that one of my mainteinance software may have deleted the registry string for this action, but I'm not used to put my hands on my register cause it requires quite good knowledge of what you ar doing so you don't leave a mess on your comp. ... Read more

A:Control/C Control/V control/alter/delete doesn't work

Mary, keyboard problems are not invariably software or malware-related. First things first - what OS are you talking about ? XP, Win 7, Win 8 or what? What type of keyboard is it? PS2, USB or wireless?

Disconnect it and reconnect it a few times, reboot and try again. Turn the keyboard upside down, placing one end on the edge of a thick book, and thump a few times on the back with your hand. Sweep the crud onto the carpet.....

Is it just a keyboard hardware problem, and if so which keys? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/keyboard-shortcuts#keyboard-shortcuts=windows-7 tells you a lot of key combinations with ctrl and shift and alt. Tell us if any or none work?

Open a document and try typing a bit of text. Do all the characters work?

If it appears the keyboard is faulty, can you borrow another to test?

Quite often, keyboard problems are down to wireless problems: and can often be solved by re-installing the keyboard driver.

When I go to the Control Panel to bring up Backup & Restore, all I get now is basically a blank screen, as illustrated in the screen shot included.

I don't know if this may have contributed to this dilemma or not, but I recently added a new SSD on which Windows 7 has been installed. Backup & Restore was working fine after these changes. I was able to schedule backups and set the file location to an internal hard drive I now use exclusively for all backups. It did perform one back up two weeks ago, shortly after I first booted from the SSD. But the next two scheduled weekly backups were not performed. Sometime after that initial back up the program disappeared and became what is seen in the screen shot. (Though the words "Back up or restore your files" appear in blue type, they are not a clickable link.) Can anyone tell me how to restore Backup & Restore?

A:Help, Control Panel doesn't let me in (Hijackthis log)

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

I have to tell you that is a very infected machine!

The P2P programs you have installed expose you to risks because of the nature of the P2P file sharing process. File sharing/P2P programs rely on members giving and gaining unrestricted access to computers across the P2P network. This practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. It also exposes you to very malicious worms and trojans. You change those risky default settings to a safer configuration but the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection.

Go to add/remove programs and remove all P2P programs from your machine!

Please download (save) SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your desktop. SmitfraudFix runs under W2K, XP only.

Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. Select all of the contents and Extract them
to a new folder called SmitfraudFix.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may aler... Read more

is there a solution for this coz i really like it at first glance coz its a full screen control panel and i like that metro style

A:Control Panel App doesn't show up nor open

Hello Skream,

Do you mean that the Control Panel app is not on the Metro Start screen?

Control Panel - Open in Windows 8
If so, then you could create a Metro Apps shortcut from the first tutorial below, create a shortcut of Control Panel to pin to Apps, then pin it from Apps to the Metro "Start" screen in the second tutorial below.

Odd problem. Yesterday I wanted to check the status of the batteries in my Microsoft wireless mouse, so opened Control Panel, and clicked "Printers and Other Hardware" (whose icon actually shows a mouse). Choices are Pick a task: View installed printers or Add a printer. Under "or Pick a Control Panel icon, I have only Printers and Faxes, and Scanners and Cameras. THE MOUSE ISN'T A CHOICE, AS IN NOT THERE! In order to get to the mouse, I have to switch to classic (Win98) mode, which contains an icon for the mouse.

Wasn't that way we I first got the computer. Why doesn't my mouse show on the XP style of the Control Panel?

Hi ,

I don't know what had happened , i just on my computer and a couple of error messages appear. I can't open control panel now, when i clicked on it , it just open and closes by itself in 1 second.
I also can't update windows , an error message will appear.

It says :
You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. To use all microsoft windows features , such as all updates from windows update; get the latest updates and receive product support, your copy of microsoft windows must be validated as genuine.

Go online and resolve now : http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=64187 (seems like they gave me a broken link)

I also can't use my snipping tool to take a screenshot of the error. I don't know why it can't even open.

I used windows defender and they found an error : code0x8024402c

Hi I'm a new user on this forum so let me know if I'm doing anything wrong by posting here. Thanks!

I recently installed the 306.23 whql driver for my nvidia geforce gt 525m on my laptop. After the installation I can no longer open up the nvidia control panel. I also had the issue of slow right-click on my desktop but I solved it by following this thread here: Right Click on Desktop lag issue

Would really appreciate your help and happily welcome your guidance, thank you in advance!

I use an application that installs itself as both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. I have no idea why, just bad programming I guess (I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit). As such its control panel shows up twice in Control Panels. It's a small complaint I know but for the sake of having OCD I'd rather there only be one version of the cp.

Despite Googling for a while on this subject I can't find a proper solution. I've seen plenty of suggestions mentioning removing/renaming the associated cpl file but, this control panel doesn't appear to use a cpl file, I can't find one at any rate. The only thing I can even vaguely find referencing it is in the Registry. I tried deleting those keys but the 32bit control panel persists (so I restored them for now).

Those registry keys mention a DLL file, inside the program's installation folder, and sure enough there are two, one called ControlPanelResources.dll and the other ControlPanelResources64.dll. As stated the app is configured to install itself twice, seemingly, the 32bit and the 64bit version, all in the same place -Program Files (x86).

I have also looked in the registry under the usual areas relating to control panels; HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Control Panel, but there are no keys in there referencing these control panels. The keys I found are elsewhere in the registry.

Any ideas? All I want to do is remove the 32bit instance from control panels, nothing else. But clearly the cpl (if there is one) is h... Read more

Hi Everyone,

I have been struggling with getting my SLI to work.

System:
| i7-2770k 3.5gHz | ASUS P8Z68-V Pro | 2x4gb Kingston Hyper X | PoV Nvidia GTX 550 Ti 1gb | Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 550 Ti 1gb | Cougar 750watt PSU | Windows 7 Enterprise |

The VGA cards are:
Connected via SLI link.
Connected to power.
Connected correctly on the Mother Board.

My Mother Board is SLI compatible.
My PSU is SLI compatible.
My drivers are installed and up to date.
I have re-installed my drivers as well.
I have updated my Bios as well. (During which my Primary drive got corrupted and I had to start all over)

Nvidia Control Panel is STILL not giving me any SLI configuration options. It detects that both VGA cards are connected and I can select which core to use, but nothing about SLI.

I'm stuck and need to be pointed in the right direction.

Can anyone offer some advice?

Thanks in advance!

A:Nvidia Control Panel doesn't show SLI options

I know you said you've updated the bios but have you checked for settings related to SLI in the BIOS? There may be a setting to enable it.

Also from some of the forums I've read, people have resolved a similar issue by rolling back the Realtek Ethernet driver, apparently this is related to the Z68 boards. May be worth a shot at least since updating the driver would be simple enough.

Hey everyone,

This is the first time I've posted about any kind of computer issue, so please respond if you need any kind of information that I don't give... but anyway...

Every time I go into the control panel and try to open up Network Connections, it simply freezes. Nothing loads, it just sits there with the little hourglass until I ctrl+alt+delete out of it... I am running Windows XP, SP2 I believe. Any help would be greatly appreciated, let me know if you need me to find out any more information about my computer as well.

Also, I don't know if this is relevant or will help in any way, but I usually have a problem with svchost.exe... when I open up process explorer, it is generally using upwards of 80% of my CPU... so I double click on that process and kill each of the ones that are using high amounts of my CPU, usually around 2 or 4 that I end up killing. Don't know if this can be tied in at all... but just thought it could possibly help.

Win 7 64 bit SP1 Home Premium.
I have two problems that I have been trying to solve for some time.
1. System hangs at "Log Off" on shutdown or restart. Every time.
2. When I try to bring up "Control Panel" I get this error msg:
::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}\0
Application not found
This happens for all apps within control panel, but with different msg.
So I can't get to any control panel apps.

What I have tried:
. Works the same in safe mode. (Except for log-off)
. I have run the following programs for both virus and root-kit.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
RogueKiller
Spybot - Search & Destroy 2
SpywareBlaster
SUPERAntiSpyware
Avast
No reported errors.
. I have googled and found similar problems but not the same. Their fixes don't work.
. My two latest image backups have the same control panel problem.
I didn't notice it until the log-off problem started.
Please let me know if I need to post any logs or info.
I am not a computer wizard! That's why I am asking you guys.
Thanks in advance for any help.

A:Log-off and Control Panel don't work

The only times I've seen that Control Panel couldn't open, on various versions of Windows, was when the computer had serious infections.

As for "My two latest image backups have the same control panel problem", if the computer has problems they will be in the backup and restore to the same condition as when the backup was made. Or in other words, Windows has to be in good order before a good backup can be accomplished, so the problems probably existed before the earliest of those 2 backups.

Have you tried putting the words control panel in the Start, Search box then pressing Enter to see if that works?

Try the fix at Kelly's Korner. Restore the Control Panel - #256 on the left.Right click on it and save the .reg file to your desktop. Then, double click on the file icon (on your desktop) to merge it into your registry. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take affect. With any fix like this you should create a new restore point and backup the registry first. For backing up the registry I like to use ERUNT.

Hi Windows Seven Forums,
I'm walking through what should be a very easy FTP server install from the Windows 7 Features. This walkthrough is great...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrzNPq-B6Ts

Unfortunately, when I click on:

Control Panel
Programs and Features
Turn Windows features on or off
Internet Information Services plus sign
FTP server plus sign
FTP Extensibility check box is clicked which highlights all FTP server check boxes
Click OK.
Microsoft Windows then says Please wait while Windows makes changes to features. This might take several minutes.

Once installed, I click on:
Control Panel
Administrative Tools (click on View by: Large icons if you can't see Administrative Tools)
...and no Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager?

I have restarted the PC and removed unchecked the FTP server and restarted...what's happened?

Hi,
My new system was working OK I installed acronis ATI 12 + plus pack to try to get a clone that worked - it did not - my new drives are 2T & most of my other sata drives are 1T or 1.5T. I like to clone disks.
I noticed that I could not switch back from acronis controlling the backups in control panel to the windows backup system - it just did not switch over. I un-installed Acronis
NOW the link in control panel will not launch the windows backup. i have tried a few unsuccessful "fixes" that do not work. I do have a windows backup & system backup that is about a week old - but a lot happens in a week on my machine.
I think that I could get this partition to restore with my windows rescue disk OK, BUT before I do I would love to know how to fix this problem.
Could someone please help?
cheers

I have two current problems with Windows (XP). They seem unrelated but, as well as I can remember, occurred simultaneously. They may?possibly?also be related to a problem I had with Firefox, a problem that caused me to return to IE?s browser.

First, I can no longer access Windows System Restore. When I touch the System Restore tab in the Help and Support Center, nothing happens. Nor does it if I touch the Use Tools tab. For the record, underneath where it says ?Did You Know??, the date given is February 18, 2006, rather than today?s date.

Second, when I go into Control Panel, Display, Desktop (to change my desktop wallpaper), my system often hangs up, leaving Control Panel, Display permanently visible but not allowing me to change anything. The only way I can get back to normal is reboot. When Control Panel, Display hangs up, it is almost always accompanied by a message that says: ?Run a DLL as an app has encountered a problem and needs to close.? Before Windows closes when I reboot, I also get a message stating: ?rundll32.exe (ending program).? At times, I also get one of the following messages: ?DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close.? On at least an occasion or two, I have also gotten a message describing ?DDE Server Windows? or ?Font Capture? as ?ending programs.?

Thank you.

Hello,Well let me start off by saying I'm a newbie here! I am currently running Windows XP and just recently installed Norton 360. The problems below did not start until after I had successfully installed Norton 360. It was working fine until later that night. My wife had went on to the internet and after she finished that's when the problems showed up.My first problem is I can't restore my Active Desktop. When I press the restore button I get an error message. The error message reads:Internet Explorer Script ErrorLine: 65Char: 1Error: Object doesn't support this actionCode: 0URL: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/BigSheriff/Application%20Data/Microsoft/Internet%20Explorer/Desktop.httDo you want to continue to run scripts on this page? Yes / NoProblem 2:I can not open the control panel, printer and faxes, my computer, etc... (the tabs on the start menu) The screen simply blinks (going to my orginal desktop) and goes back to that white (restore active desktop) screen. It seems like it resets it self because my quick launch icons disappear then reappear as if I restarted the computer. I have run my Norton virus scan, Spy Sweeper, and a couple of online virus scans but they could not find a problem. Please help I'm stumped! Usually I can figure these things out but I guess this one has got me!

A:Can't Restore Active Desktop or open Control Panel

Active Desktop script error fix * Open an explorer window. * Go to tools > folder options > view, and uncheck hide protected opsys files. * Apply and ok. * Then do a search in your sys drive [usually c: ] for desktop.htt. It will be in Docs and Settings\User\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer. * Delete them [One or more]. * Close the explorer window, re-click your desktop and click Refresh. * Make sure to then go back and RECHECK that box for view, and uncheck hide protected opsys files.. you really don't want those special files exposed all the time!madcraic.com

I am running ATI Catalyst, latest version. The Catalyst control center allows me to adjust display resolution but not wallpaper (or themes..)

When I right click on desktop, and hit Properties, nothing happens (brief white flash as popup quickly opens and closes).
Same thing when I select Display in Control Panel.

I've tried Kellys Korner 'restore all display tabs' - nada

All values in registry curent_user/software/microsoft/windows/current version/policies/system are 0.

I tried the following (below, found here), value was already zero.

thank you
bob

>Click on START, RUN and type REGEDIT, press OK. This opens the Registry Editor. Be careful not to change anything!!!!

Look for HKEY_CURRENT_USER - click on + to expand it.

Click on - Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Policies, System.

Then, under System, look for the file called NoDispCPL - this means it's the settings for displaying the Control Panel.

Highlight NoDispCPL and double click - a box will appear called "Edit DWORD value"

In the box called Value Data, it will have the number "1" - change this to zero "0".

When installing applications they appear to install correctly. An icon is created on the desktop and I can access the program.

In control panel under programs and features... the application is not showing up. I cannot uninstall the programs, because they aren't showing in programs and features to uninstall.

Yes, workarounds can be used to delete the program, but there is something wrong. The programs are not installing properly.

I ran sfc/ scannow as admin no problems indicated
After a couple hours messing with this:

Thought I should add this... When I right click on the installer/setup exe file and select to run as administrator the installer works and does show up in programs and features... Also, I can delete the program as well from programs and features.

I have never had to do this before even though I am admin...(in name mostly) unless I am willing to allow more vulnerability to my system by turning on all the time. Still having to run as admin does seem a bit much for installing programs. The worst part...the installer will run, installs the program, yet leaves off the ability to uninstall or change in the programs and features page of control panel

I have a recurring "Trojan.KillerAV" or "Trojan.AVKiller", either way, I just need to be able to turn of System Restore. I can't do this because I can't open Control Panel, "this action is restricted, please contact system administrator" or something to that effect. I downloaded a .reg edit file, but was restricted from running it. Here's my HJT log:

Three problems that I think are related.

(I'm running Windows XP, factory installed. I installed SP2, successfully, a few months ago.)

1. I can't get to System Restore. I choose System Restore from the System Tools menu and nothing happens. The cursor turns to an hour glass for a second, then changes back, and then it's as if I hadn't chosen any menu option--nothing at all happens.

2. If I type into the Run window msconfig, I get the following: "Windows cannot find msconfig. Make sure you typed the name correctly. . . . etc. . .."

3. Problem in the Control Panel. Some of the ten categories in the Control Panel I can click on and get to immeditately. But others, including Network and Internet Connections, when I click on it, I get the message "An error occurred while Windows was working with the Control Panel file c:\windows\system32\netsetup.cpl." I click OK, then the same box comes up again; after maybe ten times, finally the error box stops coming up and I do in fact get the Network and Internet Connections window.

Hi

I'm suddenly finding that I'm unable to open Display and others (e.g. System) in Control Panel on my laptop running Win7 professional 64 bit..
If I try a system restore I get an 0x80042302 error message ref. the Volume Shadow copy service.
If I then try to run Services.msc as administrator to check if the Volume Shadow Copy Service is running I get a box saying:
'MMC cannot open the file.............
This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to view the file.'

Display worked OK a couple of days before this, when I changed the resolution to connect to an external monitor.

Any advice please?

I have a 4y old Sony VAIO (VGN-NS11J) that stopped working today morning after making a whirring noise

Repeated attempts to restart failed and after many attempts, I managed to get to the Startup Repair mode - after a long time, startup repair says it failed to automatically repair the problem

I managed to run system restore but after a while I got the following message: "System restore failed due to an unspecified error. The disk strucgture is corrupted and unreadable (0X80070571)

My laptop did not come with a Windows Vista CD/Recovery disk

My first priority is to recover a few files in the laptop - if I am able to do this, then I dont mind junking the laptop

Since this is an old laptop, I would prefer not to use an expensive professional to recover the data

Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hello, thanks for taking the time to look into this issue.I have Windows XP Pro Corp, SP-3 and have just re-installed a fresh copy on my Dell Dimension 4500. It is updated up to SP3 and everything appears to be running normally. However, in checking the Control Panel in category view and going into the Performance and Maintenance, then into Administrative Tools, I click on Admin Tools and sometimes the shortcut works, other times not. The start navigation click is heard, but the window does not go into Admin Tools. The same with Scheduled Tasks. I click on it to open it, however the start navigation click is heard but the window does not open Scheduled Tasks. It can work occasionally, but other times it simply sits on the Performance and Maintenance screen. In Classic View it is the same case. All the icons are there, I click on Administrative Tools and sometimes the shortcut works, other times not. The start navigation sound is heard but the option does not execute. If I right click those functions and hit Explore they work every time. I created an administrative tools folder in the start menu and all the shortcuts function normally. No problems. But inside the control panel is entirely different. The left click "open" command is what is at fault I think, being intermittent. The other control panel options all work normally. I thought at first it may have been another program blocking the access to those shortcuts. I have PC Registry Mechanic 10.0, Glary Utilities,... Read more

A:Control Panel Icons Work Intermittently

You may have already messed up the registry by using Registry Cleaners, they should never be used and can do more harm than good, don't believe all the hype that the manufacturers try and tell you, they are a waste of money.

One thing that is not quite clear from your opening post is if the shortcuts were working when you first re-installed Windows and have since failed.

Were there any other problems with the performance of the PC that prompted you to re-install Windows?

Hi All,

First sorry if this is one of those disaster problems gone wild! But this one is puzzling me and im ussually happy to work through problems.

A freind of mine has a labtop and according to him he doesn't use it for much of nothing. But recently the labtop freezes as windows xp is at the loading screen. I saw it and it actually freezes within moments of the blue lines going across the screen in the little box.
Anyways, so I booted it in safe mode, now in safe mode theres no explorer bar at the bottom of the screen. used task manager to load explorer and it pops up for one second and dissappears.

Next, I went into msconfig and tried to check if there was anything in there that might trigger this affect. So I found two files which were called "[][][][].[][][]" im not sure how many boxes it made but I immediately unchecked those two. And I went on to uncheck a couple more like anti virus software and etc.

This time when it started up it actually went through pass the start up screen. He logged in for me and that started looking goood. But all of a sudden again no explorer bar and I could only work from task manager.

Hes running Windows XP on a P3 by the way. Anyways, if anyone has any ideas for me to try I would greatly appreciate it. What sucks to me the worse is, this is a labtop so I can't really use a bootdisk to help me tool wise.

I figure this may be some sick virus that I have no clue about cause im sure he doesnt update his Windows ... Read more

I have a set of usb speakers and a logitech Headset.

Both work fine. When I can finally by chance get one or the other playing. See pic. Nothing seems to be easy to switch between the two. Why does the panel not acknowledge both are plugged in? Its a big drama to try to switch from speakers to headphones & vica versa.

Is there a 3rd party gadget that'll make life easy here?

Yesterday i notices that i have 40 GB unallocated in my primary hard drive(i have two; the main one with vista has 160 GB and 320 on the second one.) and i couldnt extend the drive using disk managment, so i saw this really good program called MiniTool Partition wizard, but when i run the program and tried to extend it told me I had to reboot because the drive is in use or something, so i rebooted and then i got this BootMgr not found error. Hey Folks,

I am running build 7127 of Windows 7 x64, with the latest N-Vidia Drivers from their website.

Basically the problem I have is that my N-Vidia Control Panel settings do not seem to be applying.

I have the advanced settings option set, with anti-aliasing, and all of the other settings turned up to max, however these settings are not applying to any of my games or programs.

I was previously running build 7067 with the March Drivers and these settings worked fine, however they do not seem to be working here.

I tried rolling back to the March drivers however this did not resolve the problem which leads me to suspect some issue in the OS?

Any solutions people?

Thanks
Zach

Over the last week or so, I've had a number of issues that I've spent hours trying to solve, with no luck. I think they're either virus issues or registry issues - or both. Nothing I've tried so far has worked...

Right now, I can't open my Windows Control Panel at all. I click it, and it starts to open and then closes. I also can't open System Restore. I click it and nothing happens.

I also can't print anything, and all my printers have been removed (printer, PDF, etc.). When I try to print (or add a printer), I get an error saying the local print spooler service is not running.

And presumably unrelated, I also can't right-click any files of any kind anywhere in Windows. I get error "explorer.exe fatal application exit" saying module cannot be found, referencing Adobe CS4 Version Cue.

I tried a registry repair program, AVG anti-virus (which removed viruses, but made no improvement in these problems); ran MS OneCare anti-virus, and did a system restore a couple of days ago (when Restore was still opening). I also tried restarting in diagnostic mode, and there was no difference.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Hello.

I am having some difficulty describing exactly what my problem is, because the many issues I'm experiencing seem to be unrelated. I'll just give a list of the symptoms that I have noticed:

1) Some things simply do not work. When I click "connect to...." from the start menu, I sometimes get a blank window which simply freezes and does not respond to alt+f4. This is also true for vista's backup and restore center and the "system restore" option. This isn't even always true; Sometimes they load, but just extremely slowly.

2) When I use ctrl+alt+delete, and select task manager, the task manager seemingly loads (it appears in the taskbar), but I see no window and right clicking and left clicking does nothing. This also happens when I load the task manager directly from system32.

3) I'm trying to install spybot search and restore right now. It stalls forever on one of the steps. (specifically, getting file information during 'download') Hitting cancel brings up "Do you want to cancel this download?" Hitting yes either does absolutely nothing or takes an extremely long time to cancel the install (I ignored this window for about 5 minutes and was surprised when I saw it had closed seemingly on its own.)

4) Some programs seem to be taking much longer to get started, but not taking longer after that.

5) Turning off the computer either takes forever or a very very long time.

6) A few times several weeks ago, and a few times a fe... Read more

Anyhow i can't get any programs to work but files associated with the program seem to be able to open (for example i can open a Word document file but not the individual program). Hello to the community. I am glad you all are here to help us less technologically savey folks.

ok. My computer was attacked the other day. I have Norton Antivirus and it seemed like it caught it. I did a full system scan again Norton caught some Trojan (witch caused the pop ups to stop) and told me to restart to complete the clean.

When I did I got this message in an error box.....

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this task. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

I went to that option but have no idea how to "create an association". I also tryed to restart with the last known good configuration in the safe start menu. It did not work. Also when the error message came up the picture I have for my back ground goes away. Then when i hit OK on the error box I just have a blue back ground.

Do I still have a virus? Does anyone here know how to "create an association" for my control panel files? Oh yeah the task manager has been disabled by the administrater also. I have no idea how to do that so.

Hope to here from someone on this soon. and thanks again for this site.

I present to you today a most peculiar computer with a MYRIAD of problems, it seems.

The computer in question has been in use for about two months, I'd say. It's about six years old, but we just recently had a need to use it, so I had a tech person clean it off, fix any problems, and it was sent back to me in working condition. I loaded up my programs without many problems, except one...

The scanner portion of my printer/copier/scanner combo device never would operate. The printer is fine, but the computer ALWAYS gave me the "Found new hardware..." bit, regardless of what drivers I installed. I get the sneaking suspicion that this is related to my current woes.
Otherwise, the computer operated just fine. UNTIL, that is, last week. A friend tried to install a game to the computer, and finally gave up, having never gotten it operation. Files installed just fine, but my DirectX wasn't up to date. We tried to update it, but to no avail. Always got the same error messages that DirectX needed to be updated in order to start the game.

A few days after, I'm trying to connect a "MagicJack" to the computer for my grandmother. The MagicJack doesn't work. I spend a few hours with the abomination that is MagicJack Technical Support only to have them tell me that I need to restart/unplug-replug/install some updates. Surprise, surprise, the updates won't install. The MagicJack never works.

And finally yesterday... I was attempting to ins... Read more

Hi all,
I am having major problem with my new Vista based laptop.

Whilst setting it up I seem to have been infected with spyware/adware/malware and whislt it is now clean thanks to a combination of Norton, Registry Mechanic and Spyware Doctor when I try to use control panel or windows explorer it opens momentarily and then closes automatically without being able to see any icons etc

I have tried system restore but this won't work on any restore point as it comes across and unexpected error.

I am at a loss what to do, the Compaq laptop came with Vista preloaded so I cant reload, I am worried as because my laptop was working ok after transferring all my files from my old laptop I havent had chance to make a backup and the files on my old laptop have been deleted to re build that for my son.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

A:nvidia control panel shows 2nd monitor as vga but is dvi andoesnt work

Could you clarify your question a bit for me? I can see that you're having a problem with NVIDIA recognizing a DVI monitor as VGA but beyond that I can't understand what you wrote. Also, please confirm that particular monitor can be connected via DVI and work properly. You can do this through another computer if you have access to one.

Regardless of what you meant to say, most NVIDIA Control Panel issues will be solved by uninstalling the NVIDIA drivers and then reinstalling the most recent set of drivers from http://www.nvidia.com

Hi

I was swamped with virus recently. I removed most of it... but my mouse Right CLICK doesnt work on Windows Explorer and Control Panel, though it works fine on all other applications and desktop. I have run McAfee, Kaspersky, MicroTrend etc... but still it doesnt work. The fact that it works in 'SAFE' mode, makes me wonder if there is still some Virus on my system [Windows 2000].

I am posting the HijackThis log below..... Can someone please help. Thanks

A:Right CLICK doesnt work on Control Panel and Windows Explorer

Hello rajarsi and welcome to TSF,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any of browsers open while you are fixing this.. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. Again, you should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Do not run it yet.

Download CWShredder at http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CWShredder.exe and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree with it. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Click here to download ETRemover. Unzip it, but don't run it yet.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Run ETRemover.exe now. When it's done, follow the prompts, but don't restart yet. Do the ... Read more

I send mail to numerous people simultaneously, many times with one or more embedded links. One of the recipients complains that the link does not work, i.e., it does not re-direct to the linked site. No one else has any problems with the link, and the person who complains has no problems with other links.
Is there someplace I can look, or something I can do to find and fix the problem??
Thanks.

A:Solved: Link doesn't work...

I don't thinkt it is your problem on your PC....I would think the other persons settings are different

Did you send in normal format?

Hi all. I've purchased an upgrade to a graphics prog.(Xara3D). On my Xara account site is a link to download the file. I've tried the link with 3 different systems. First system is running Windows 98SE, IE 6 and Opera 9. Second system is WindowsXP Home Premium with IE 6. I've tried to download the file(xara3d.exe) from both machines and browsers, with and without firewall/antivirus, also with every setting for cookies and popups(no proxy is involved). My ISP is a local provider(Southnet.net). Everytime I try the download, I get the infamous 'Cannot find server' & 'This page cannot be displayed'. I don't have any problem downloading anything else. The third system is Windows XP Home with IE 6 which belongs to my brother. His ISP is Bellsouth.net. From his machine, the file was available and downloadable. We then came back to my machines(both) and he logged into his Bellsouth account and tried the download on both my systems. Both worked fine. The file was able to be downloaded as normal. I called my ISP to see if he could explain the situation but couldn't. He said there weren't any restrictions on my account so he didn't think the problem was Southnet.
Sorry for the long discourse. Hope someone can offer a bit of advice. TIA, RAS
