Backup Screen options/info screen blank; Error (0x80070422)

Q: Backup Screen options/info screen blank; Error (0x80070422)

I recently changed motherboards and removed a 2nd hard drive which contained win 8.1. The system now has one drive with Win 7 Pro on it. My backups have been going to a removable seagate usb 3.0 drive and was not always plugged into the system, so occasionally I got a notice that windows couldn't find the backup drive which was not a problem as I plugged it in weekly and backup ran fine then.

What I've done so far:

1) sfc /scannow from elevated prompt, no files had problems
2) ran MRT and virus scan, came back negative
3) Started system repair disk and selected Startup Repair and came back with no problems, ran additional available troubleshooter which came back with no problems found.
The full error message reads:

"The backup application could not start due to an internal error:

The service cannot be started either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. (0x80070422) "

When I select "Backup and Restore", the page comes up showing only the words "Control Panel Home" in the upper left in the blue area and the words "Backup or Restore your files" in the top white area of the page. The rest of the page is blank. See attached pdf ...
Not surprisingly then, the service doesn't show up in msconfig as a startup service.

The error is supposed to be, according to technet articles, indicative of a corrupted file, however as stated above System File Checker finds nothing.

Thanks in advance for any helpful ideas.

A: Backup Screen options/info screen blank; Error (0x80070422)

Windows Backup was disabled in "Services" for an unknown reason. Also, I was looking for "Backup and Restore" at the top of the list of services instead of Windows Backup at the very bottom of the list. I didn't look in "Linux Backup and Restore", either. Duh. Anyway, good news, easy fix. Done.

"Start > right click "Computer" > select "Manage" > select "Services" > select "Windows Backup" from list and double click it. When the pop up window opens, if the pull down says "This service is disabled" click on the pull down and select Manual. Click "Apply". "OK". Done.

Now, just go to backup and restore in the Maintenance folder on the start menu program list, click it and Backup menu is there ready to go.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1750 laptop with core 2 duo (I forget how many GB the hd is) that had Windows 7 Home Premium edition installed on it when I got it. (I have no idea where any of the CDs that came with it are now.)I had been having problems with the login screen just flashing from the blue background image to black and the mouse just showing the circle thing with Please Wait... showing, instead of loading the icons. Normally, there are two icons that show up. One is the Fast Access icon that has facial recognition and the other icon is the one to type my password.
It would only run in safe mode, and none of my restore points would make windows load normally, but I know next to nothing about computers and wasn't able to find a tutorial on how to fix it, so I downloaded Ubuntu instead by using Windows in safe mode with networking. I was having problems with Ubuntu freezing, so on the next startup I chose to run diagnostics tests and the monitor connection test & the sata confidence test both failed, while everything else passed, which I don't understand because I wasn't having any problems with dead pixels or colors or anything or saving any files. (I think the hd test said something about $I30 31344?) I went into bios setup and clicked factory restore or something along those lines, thinking that it would restore Windows to how it was when I first got the laptop and now, it loads the Dell circle at startup followed by a black screen with a white blin... I am running a windows xp pc (SP3) with a Radeon X850 XT display adaptor and want my monitor to turn off after fiveminutes of inactivity.

I have no problems setting this in the power saving options - and it works for a few days - but then it stops working and my screen is continually on.

I wonder if the power saving settings are being deleted by a virus scanner (I run Avira) or some other programme?

Any help much appreciated.

Hi all,

Starting yesterday my computer would go through startup... while loading the desktop it would crash to blue screen with white text (unfortunately, I can't remember the exact error message). If restarted, it either goes to a blank black screen or back to blue, and I could only get the computer to operate in safe mode with networking. My antivirus software (avast free, malwarebytes)scanned and found no infections.

I have Windows 7, Samsung laptop.

Today, I was able to start the computer normally and am functioning with internet (still acting a little funny), but I am sure something is still not right. I also did a system restore last night, with the same problems (crashing, not starting up).

Any assistance would be highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

PS: I (goofily) started a similar topic in the "Windows 7" forum section without knowing this section was down here... Sorry! I tried to delete the topic/post but couldn't. Thanks.

I'm not sure if this is one virus or if my computer has somehow picked up several, but it is pretty much completely screwed. I can't access ANYTHING properly so i am posting this message from another computer.

This is what happens when I turn my computer on:

1. blank blue screen with program error message: "explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows....".
2. if i click "ok" the message goes away and i am left with a blank blue screen and i have to reboot the computer
3. if i don't click ok windows starts to load up an looks normal at first but then another error message pops up (the same one) and the screen turns black and says some junk like "Warning! You're in danger!" and then some junk about spyware.
4. then a few seconds later another error message pops up and the screen turns white and says "Active Desktop Recovery. Microsoft Windows has experienced and unexpected error..." It gives me an option to "click here to restore" but nothing happens when i do click it.
5. and then another error message pops up and the screen goes black again, then another message and it goes white and so on.

I can't really open any programs properly because another error message will pop up and shut down the start menu before i get a chance to open anything.

I managed to run ad-aware and it found some problems that i cleaned up. then spybot found nothing. then i rebooted and was having the same ... Read more

Yes, you've got a few malware entries in there (a CoolWebSearch hijack, and a couple of trojans), though it's not going to be easy to remedy without seeing the complete HJT log. Can you possibly copy the log to floppy and then post it from the other computer?

What's the Windows OS?
eg. Is it Windows 2000 sp4? Or is it WinXP Pro sp2?

What version of HijackThis is it? v1.99.1 is the latest version.
Is HijackThis.exe running from a permanent folder, and not from within a zip file in a Temp folder?
This is important. Make sure HijackThis.exe is installed in eg.
C:\Program Files\HijackThis
Re: your questions at the end of your post:
Don't worry about WINNT / winnt and System32 / system32
They are both exactly the same (whether smallcase or uppercase or a mixture).
svchost.exe is legitimate and is an integral part of Windows NT/2k/XP (Services Host).
It is normal to have multiple instances of it running.

Anyway, try this for now...
If possible, please download the following apps and transfer them to the infected pc.

I cant format since i am not getting BIOS options and i looked online in some forum and it said that some sony computers have them locked. please help!

A:Blank screen after initial startup. BIOS options are locked

have you tried 'F2' ?
I've dealt with several vaio's and they do like to move the button around. F2 seems the most common. It's never del though which is what would be considered normal. ...and I've never heard of one being completely locked out. It's possible the person that said that just couldn't for the life of them figure out fn + pause or whatever strange key combination was used. There's pretty much always a way in.

First I run Windows 2000 and keep it updated as much as Microsoft releases updates. I also reguarly run anti-virus, anti-spyware, defrag, etc. The problem started 2 weeks ago when I booted the computer it showed the MB splash screen and then instead of the 2000 loading screen it just showed "Error loading OS." in the top left. Well I figured the hard drive was going so I pulled it out, blew it off, tapped on it, checked connections and stuck it back in. Rebooted and everything seemed fine and has the past 2 weeks. Well today I was playing Civilization 4 and the screen went blue. Yes the dreaded blue screen, but no error messages on the screen or anything. Just a solid blue screen. The computer didn't respond to anything so I pushed the power button on the case. Well upon restarting nothing happens. Just a blank screen. No MB splash screen or anything. Everything is powered up and I can hear the hard drive spinning, but nothing is on the screen.

History. The HD that is in there now STARTED to have WIN xp installed on it while it was in another computer. That computers MB was friend so what was happening to that computer was it was shutting down at random times. So needless to say the HD has a partial OS installed on it. I put it in the new computer hoping that I would be ale to start installing xp where it had left off , well that didn't work. Below is the current error that I am receiving when I turn the computer on.

I'm having issues running backup on my newly installed copy of W7 Pro. The problem is quite simple, and is illustrated by the image.

As you can see, when I try to actually RUN the backup, I get an error.

I have attempted to backup with all of the following services started.

- "Remote Procedure Call"
- "COM+ Event System"
- "System Event Notification Service"
- "Volume Shadow Copy" (this is the only one that I had to manually start)
- "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider"

I assume the following is okay:

I want to get a windows backup but it will not work,I have read here that someone got the same problem and in that case the backup was disabled, where can I change that to enabled?

A:Windows Backup will not Start (0x80070422),where do I enable it?

Here: Backup aborts with error code 0x80070422 - Microsoft Community

To check for the services, click on start, in the start search bar type services and then press enter.

Please check that the following services are enabled: "Remote Procedure Call" (RPCSS) should be enabled, Automatic.
"COM+ Event System" (EventSystem) should be enabled, Manual.
"System Event Notification Service" (SENS) should be enabled, Automatic.
"Volume Shadow Copy" (VSS) should be enabled, Manual.
"Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" (SWPRV) should be enabled, manual.
Once you make any changes according to the specifications listed above, you can try a backup and check if that resolves the issue.

I would also suggest you to run a SFC scan:

Recently my laptop screen had to be replaced due to a cracked screen. Original screen was a Samsung and the new screen is LG. After this, whenever I install Intel HD graphics, windows boots up till the login screen and then goes black, one bright flicker, then completely black again. However, when I boot into safe mode and replace Intel HD graphics driver with Standard VGA adapter, everything works fine, except for crappy graphics ofcourse. I tried installing various old/new/latest versions of driver software, upgrade/downgrade BIOS, install monitor.inf file from lenovo website for this laptop model, everything.
Odd thing: running Dxdiag shows my current display to be 1200x800 (32bit)(1hz).
So, I tried to change the display refresh rate in advanced settings> Screen refresh rate, no luck, no other option except ' Use hardware defaults'. So, I went ahead an modified registry values as given here:
How to Modify the Video Refresh Frequency in the Registry

Again, no use. After I reboot and go back and check, its set to 1 by default.

Tried 4 clean installs, installing on a completely new HDD, Windows 7 Pro, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8 , everything..

Is it a screen problem? Or some hardware ID kind of thing?
What should I do ?
Please help!

A:Black Screen/Blank screen after screen replacement

Not all laptop screens are the same. It is important to get a "replacement" screen, not a "compatible" one.

On the back of the laptop screen is a product sticker (you can only read this before you install the screen). On that sticker is the manufacturer and model #. You can use that number to find exact replacements.

How did you come to choose the LG screen?

it comes on the blue screen with a lot of other suggestions, none of which make much sense, like look for BIOS updates, change your video adapters, check your disk space..... none of these seem to be any reason why i would get this error. i have used the dell restore pc program by symantec. i have no cds to this computer to reformat to whole thing. but the symantec program started it over from day 1, still got the error and sometimes it will turn off on its own.

microsoft will not talk to me because it was preinstalled, dell wont talk to me for free since its 2 months out of warranty. its not really worth it to start paying to chat with dell.. yet.

I have a friend's Dell Inspiron 15 Laptop. It can't boot into anything. I have tried using a Windows USB stick, but it just goes to a blank screen. Even automatic repair won't boot - It just says preparing then fades to a blank screen!

Is there anything that will fix this?

First we need the actual DMP file. use these to find and upload it to us.

It is telling you that there is a problem with your video driver. You need to go to nvidia and download the newest version.

Completely uninstall the current driver, and only install the driver, not the other junk that comes with it

Hi, I originally posted this in the VISTA system repair forum, but they suggested I post here.
After going to a website my browser started opening tons and tons of windows and to stop it I had to restart. I had also downloaded smartFTP recently. The next day after my computer started up normally I got a blue screen with this message:
Techical information:
***Stop:0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0x00000000, 0xA0603A48)
The computer restarted itself and seemed to load fine. I logged into Windows and got to my normal desktop. But right away was sent to the same blue screen. I restarted in safe mode with no problems. I have tried System Restore several times and Start with last known good configuation. Each time the computer restarts normally until I login to Windows. As soon as I get to the desktop I get the same blue screen error. If I just restart the computer and then do nothing, I am eventually taken to the same blue screen.
Also, I have Macaffee, and (in safe mode) the macafee windows says I have to fix a bunch of things, but when I hit FIX I get an error message and can't fix anything.
Also, in safe mode there is an exclimation mark next to the networking drivers. I'm afraid of unistalling them and not being able to reinstall them (in safe mode I can't access the internet-I have aircard).
Basically I kind of think my next step might be to just wipe it and start over?, but I've never done this kind of thing before. Plus, I don't have my vista cd, and even if I did my cd/dvd ... Read more

I get the "cetihpz://errors/blank.htm" error messsage along with a blank window about half the size of the screen each time I start up. It is not interfering with computer operation but I know it doesn't belong. System Restore doesn't get rid of it. Any ideas on how to remove the message and blank screen?

When you click the "show me the message" button, it dumps me to a blank bluish-white screen that stays there for a little while, not responding to anything. If I alt-tab I see what looks like the interactive detection box (original box) and the WinVNC error, which never shows up in a window. Just the blank screen. After about a minute and a half, it dumps me back out at the user login (what some people call the welcome) screen, and I have to log back into my already running user. The interactive detection box is still there, and so I click the "X" button and close it, and about 5 minute later it pops back up again.

After successful POST, Windows attempts to start but goes to a black screen after the logo and sits there with a mouse pointer that occasionally animates a spinner. Two I/O (NTSTATUS value - 0xC0000013) errors then recur indefinitely: one for WerFault.exe followed by one for LogonUI.exe. This happens in normal and safe mode (including safe mode with command prompt, no command prompt shows up)).

Problems started to show up after I restarted the machine after installing Windows updates today morning. I use a Win7 64bit ultimate and have the OS installation on an SSD.

Repair your Windows automatically (in the advanced boot options menu) also reports an I/O error.

I also have to backup some important data from the system and would atleast like to recover that data in case I am forced to do a clean install.

What should I try do next? (I do not have access to a different 64 bit win 7 machine but I do hav a 32 bit win 7 machine available)

(Problem very similar to that posted by cristobal03 on 28-Dec-2011 under section Tech Support Guy Forums > Security & Malware Removal > Virus & Other Malware Removal with title I/O stop errors for WerFault.exe and LogonUI.exe, even though I suspect that my problem might not be beacuse of a malware/virus. But that thread was closed before a solution was provided and the problem in my case seems to be a bit different)

I am running Windows 8.1. After restarts, the laptop screen would be blank, yet the computer would load. If I hooked up a 2nd monitor, it would show the desktop on that screen but laptop screen blank.

Now when I try to type on that computer (I'm currently on a different computer) the typing of the keys is all off (none of the letters actually type what they are supposed to and some open up random windows and command prompts)

I am wondering if this is a virus. Currently running Malwarebytes. I did a system restore earlier and the problem wasn't solved.

A:Blank Screen error and typing issues

Could be a virus, but could also mean the motherboard is faulty. If still in warranty, RTM.

Does the laptop have a bootable CD reader? If so, then download and make a bootdisk of a small linux (e.g. puppy linux). Booting off that will virtually prove if the motherboard is faulty or not.

i am so desperate for your help right now. i've been reading the threads on the blank screen and explorer.exe error. but the info didnt seem to solve my problem.
i started out w/ 2 trojans. then i downloaded ad-aware SE, and AVG free.
after the reboot, an error message showed up:

Explorer.EXE - Application Error
The application failed to inititate properly (0xc0000022). Click OK to terminate the program.

i logged in thru all users, yet all i can access is the taskmananger.
i've tried deleting the HKEY's from the Registry, but i didnt find them in the folder specified!
they were already missing. i also tried sfc /scannow in cmd, it scanned the files alright, but it didnt ask me for the CD. when i restarted, the same error message showed up. and so did the same blank screen. when i try to type in "explorer.exe", the same error message occurs.
and i can't go online from my laptop.

Hey everyone.

I did a bit of research and this seems to have been an issue for a while, or has been in the past. Was upgrading to windows 10, I first had to restart my pc cause it was initially stuck on that preparing to install problem with the green bar being stuck around 25%.

It then got through that and began the installation process with the big circle and rebooting process. However around 91% when I last looked at it it was just black screen, this stayed this way for about 3-4 hours. I then decided to reboot the pc and it has now booted to the login screen. Is this a known bug or could there be a possible issue?

The problem seems a bit different as some people I saw have had to fall back on PC restore points etc. So not sure if it installed or what could be the problem.

Also side note, I upgraded my pc when windows 10 first publically released, but rolled back because I had about 5min shutdown times. So not sure what is going on and any info would be greatly appreciated!

A:Black Screen of Doom but Booted to login screen (no cursor just blank)

I never had a problem upgrading like you've experienced but I experiencing Windows 10 upgrading process is the longest time taken ever compared to previous versions. It took me 1 hour+ to finished.

Play around a little bit to get used to it then did a clean install. No problem arise, seems working fine.

The point is, problems always happen after upgrading, to solve it just perform installation from scratch (clean install).

i'm having to boot into windows xp. on power up sytem goes through the windows xp splash screen (with progress bar) and then instead of login prompt it goes just into the blue screen with moveable mouse pointer arrow.

issue seems to be similar to:
but recommended solutions didn't help so far.

symptoms just before issue - was not able to run use some system features - utility to turn off the display, utility to bring up battery info - everything was working fine before this

what i've tried:
boot to Last Known Good Configuration - resulting in the same blue screen

boot to Safe Mode / Safe Mode with networking / Safe Mode with comman prompt - resulting in blank (black) screen with "Safe Mode" in the corners and moveable mouse

test the hardware (hard drive / memory etc.) via build in PC Doctor - all seems to be working
i am able to use bootable XP CD from other machine to get into Recovery Console
i am able to boot to simple live XP using BartPE-XPE usb key and access the hard drive

could you please help me to find solution to this issue
thank you in advance

After the Starting Windows screen a blank black screen with a cursor that I can move pops up that lasts a minute (shouldn't happen with SSD, used to be ~10 second boot). Afterwards the login screen will appear as normal and everything works as normal. This doesn't happen when I boot into safe mode.

I attached a list of start up services, installs, and scheduled tasks, along with my latest boot log.

Any suggestions?

Very similar to the following problem but i do not have a raid, and it seems that this PC has a raid and i don't, plus it was never really determined what the actual solution was.
The basics: XP Professional Boot up screen, right before the windows loading screen, or direct after the F8 Menu if you hit "Start Windows Normally..." it will just lock up, no HDD activity, blank screen. now BSOD, nothing.

All 3 safe mods work fine.

Ran chkdsk /r in recovery.
Ran proper fixboot procedure.

Went into safe mode and checked the event viewer.

The only concerning message i got was: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:

Formatting really isnt an issue since i can back up anything i need through safe mode. However its just the fact that the Windows gremlin has struck me again and i must defeat it once more.

I highly doubt this is a hardware issue as it is more of a driver/software issue.

Anymore information for me, or from me that you need, i would be extremely happy.
Thanks for your time.

I have Dell XPS 15, (L501x) laptop. I dropped it and then the screen turned off but the laptop was still on. I tired moving my mouse thinking that the screen would turn back on. Then I turned my laptop off by pressing the turn on/off button.
Then I turned my laptop on again and the login bit showed but the screen resolution was down and the screen but showed large (meaning the view was pixelated and the view was streched). The user name and the password entering text box was off screen and not visible. The OS then displayed a Finding solution error box or someting like that. After finding a solution it told me to restart by clicking the finish button. I clicked on finish and the screen went blank and the laptop didnt turn off so i forcefully turned it off by pressing the on/off button.

But my problem is that when I turned on my laptop again the dell's loading screen appears and the loading bar loads up full but then after that the screen went blank (its on but black) and doesnt show anything. After about 10/15 mins the Status: 0xc00000e9 error and said that windows has encountered a problem while connecting with a device connected to your computer.
The error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device ..... and so on.

Ok . i did a diagnostics test from Boot Options by pressing F12 and it showed me that there IS a error with my Hard Drive.

Error Code: 0142
Error Code: 2000-0142
Status: 79

Please help me over here. Thankyou.

A:Dell XPS 15 Blank Screen and error Status: 0xc00000e9

I suspect that the hard drive was damaged during the fall.
Try these free diagnostics to verify that:
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link) - Test ALL of the hard drives.

Also, you may want to try reseating the drive. To do this:
- unplug the AC Adapter and remove the battery
- open up the part of the case that covers the hard drive.
- remove the hard drive (there may be additional screws to remove, and then pull on a plastic tab to disconnect the drive).
- push the hard drive back in firmly.
- replace all screws, replace the battery and AC Adapter and try to boot.
- you may want to try Startup Repair also: Startup Repair

If that doesn't work (and if the hard drive test above fails), then you'll have to replace the hard drive and reinstall Windows. Most Dell's come with a Win7 installation disk. If you don't have that, then please contact Dell for a replacement: Order Recovery Discs (USA)

Hello,One of my XP Pro computers got infected with the "XP Antivirus 2012" malware. I had followed the instructions to remove a "XP Antivirus 2012" infection (Removal Procedure). After a scan and removal, Malwarebytes informed me that I needed to restart to finish cleaning the system. The restart gave me a BSOD 7B error and now it only starts up with a blinking underscore cursor in the upper left. Currently I'm running a ChkDsk /r via the repeir console. From what I've read on the Net, I'm doubtful that this will help. Could someone please give some pointers as to where to proceede from here? Thanks!Chris

A:7B Error Then Blank Screen After XP Antivirus 2012 Removal

Black screen/blinking cursor is typically indicative of problem with XP boot files...I would try the fixmbr command from the XP Recovery Console, after chkdsk /r completes.

Before doing that...I would enter the BIOS and ensure that the hard drive is the first boot device...and no USB external drives are on.

Ok here's the deal... for several months my computer would randomly freeze up, the screen would go blank and would say No Signal. - for about 10 seconds, then it would come right back up and be fine. My computer tech guy could not figure it out. Today my computer would freeze, then the screen would go blank and NOT come back. I would turn off the computer and restart and then it would work for a while and the same thing would happen again. Sometimes the computer would freeze, the display would show very low resolution and I would get a dialog box that said: "The nv4_disp display driver has stopped working normally. Save your work and reboot the system to restore full display functionality. The next time you reboot the machine a dialog will be displayed giving you a chance to upload data about this failure to Microsoft." My tech came out today and reinstalled the display drivers. I couldn't get the dialog box/error thing to happen while he was here (of course) and he was unable to find out what the problem was.

Hello everyone. I'm new the the forums here (as in just registered), but I need some help please. Basically after attempting to open firefox today (as I have probably over 20 times a day for the last year at least), I received a blue screen of death, and now my computer seems to be shot. I know how difficult it is to diagnose something without being able to see it, so I made a short little 4 min video of me trying to turn it on and what it does. Hopefully this has happened to at least someone before.

Blue Screen of Death - YouTube

A:[SOLVED] BSOD help. Blank screen after BIOS pop up and blue screen while trying to re

From the video you provided (which is great, by the way)... your system is failing to POST. Essentially if the system detects that a device or component is failing to provide the accurate information, which ensures that it would then be safe to run, the system will not POST.

From the looks of it, your hard drive or memory appears to be the issue which is the issue in most of the cases like this as you're BSOD'ing right after loading the Windows disc and after it loads the files necessary for the install.

My current advice:

1. Clear / reset the CMOS and try booting up and or loading the disc again.

2. If possible using another system, possibly a laptop... etc, download and run Memtest86+ -

Download Memtest86+ here:

Which should I download?

You can either download the pre-compiled ISO that you would burn to a CD and then boot from the CD, or you can download the auto-installer for the USB key. What this will do is format your USB drive, make it a bootable device, and then install the necessary files. Both do the same job, it's just up to you which you choose, or which you have available (whether it's CD or USB).

How Memtest works:

Memtest86 writes a series of test patterns to most memory addresses, reads back the data written, and compares it for errors.

The default pass does 9 different tests, varying in access patterns ... Read more

Bonjour mes amis.

I recently have started getting the infamous black screen of death at my computer's startup, very similar to this fellow user's problem. Basically, Blank screen on boot up, before login screen; slow startup. The black screen lasts at least two minutes on average, before the windows login screen comes up. Everything else runs fine!

I think it might be my antivirus, Bitdefender Total Security 2013, and I've posted on their forums about it, and I've gotten responses from other users saying:

The Black screen issue is known by BD Support till now they have not able resolved that issue.
hope BD 2014 resolves the issue.

And the booting time issue is been solved.

However, I uninstalled Bitdefender and the problem still persisted. I proceeded to uninstall every program i could remember installing before the problem started, so before the start of June. This was painful because I updated all my software, so everything was listed as installed recently.
My startup time after removing all these software is attached below; 156 seconds, compared to before with the speed ranging from 200-500 seconds, with the worst at 472 seconds.

Although this sped about my startup, I still got the annoying black screen issue. I am sure it is a software issue because the black screen is present, but lasts no longer than about 5 seconds when starting in Safe Mode with Networking, and is present even int he low graphics.

I have a Compaq Presario C300. Somehow the screen cracked and of course was not under warranty. I purchased a replacement screen online and followed the directions to replace. It was relatively simple, however, now when I boot up the computer, the backlight comes on for the whole screen, but shows up blank. Did I just not fully connect something? Is there something simple I can check before I bring the whole darn thing in for service anyway? This is what I was trying to avoid in the first place. The whole laptop was only 800 and the new replacement screen was $199 (as opposed to the quote for $450 I got to have it replaced).

Anyone have any ideas I can try?

A:Replacing Compaq Presario C300 LCD Screen: blank screen now

You have to make sure you bought right screen for your laptop. Check your connection cable hasn't any damage on it. If it still shows only blank screen, i think not coming enough power for screen (wrong screen).

I cant get into my desktop. When i start my pc XP loads, and it starts the last known good configuration. I then seen the xp loading screen.

Next i should be able to see the login screen, however this is a blank black screen, the mouse is visible and i can move it around the screen, but i cant see anything to log into the desktop.

I dont know why this has happened, it was working last night. The only thing i can think of was my brother switched the power off as it was shutting down. The shut down had automatic updates running (i think) at the time the power switches were turned off.

How do i solve this so i can see the login screen and get into my pc?

Hope someone can help, cheers.

Hey, first time posting here, so sorry if this is the wrong section or anything.

Lately my laptop has been experiencing a problem when I boot it up. After the Starting Windows screen with the glowing Windows logo, a blank black screen pops up that lasts for ages (I'd say at least 5 minutes). Afterwards the login screen will appear as normal.

When I log in, the desktop appears quickly, but when I try to start any programs, like my browser, they are slow and freeze often (usually I can run programs with no problem when the desktop appears). Sometimes the laptop will hang every three seconds. It takes a bit of time before the programs and the laptop run like normal.

I've tried several things without success:
-Uninstalling and reinstalling graphics drivers (I've never updated my drivers because no updates are ever available for my driver; is that normal? My laptop is about two years old)
-Defragging hard drive
-System Restore (I don't seem to have any restore points)
-Clean bootup
-Startup repair (or whatever that first F8 option is called)

Hi everyone,

From last few weeks I'm having this strange and annoying blank screen of death. I could just see a blank screen (not a blue screen) while either waking up computer from sleep or while trying to turn on the display by moving cursor/typing something(waking up from power saver mode of display, I set display to be of after few minutes of inactivity). So essentially screen becomes total blank. Just once or twice I saw this BSOD "DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE" but for all other times my screen is just blank. I could see the Hard Disk activity LED on during this blank screen. And almost after all subsequent boots, I could see "Windows has recovered from unexpected shutdown/serious error - Check for solution" message.

Brought to it's knees this weekend enexpectedly, I am attempting to install Windows XP Pro. I have used the maxtor diagnostic util to wipe the HDD to all zeroes, leaving one big unpartitioned space.

When I boot from the Windows XP CD it goes though the install just fine, formats the space, and copies the files, seemingly alright. When it reboots, it goes through the whole BIOS screen fine, it again asks to press any key to boot from CD, and if nothing is pressed goes directly to a blank screen, no cursor, no loading, nothing. Leaving it for up to an hour does nothing. Monitor is on, and signal seems active, but nothing is coming though.

I can access recovery console, but I'm getting in over my head at that point. Can anything in there help me?

Any advice is good advice, I messed with this all weekend long and it is getting old.

A:Windows half installs, blank screen after BIOS screen

When the PC reboots after copying files it should then read from the boot device, it may be possible that the BIOS is set incorrectly with the boot device not being set as the bootable drive.

Go into BIOS and ensure that the first bootable device is the HD you are loading windows onto, also remove any devices attached to the bootable drive such as any slave drives and that the jumper is set to master, not slave or cable select, if the CD rom that you are loading windows from is slaved to the master drive then place it on its own IDE channel and rerun the setup from scratch.

The only other time I have seen this happen is when the drive itself is flaky, that was only once though and I had to replace the drive.

Need help here.

I have a HP laptop DV9543cl with 32bit Vista. Last Thursday (6/3/2010), Vista update icon showed up and asked me to install the update. As always, i did that. Once install was done, it asked for a reboot which i did. It started booting up again and when it finished Windows logo screen, it went blank and no display with all the other lights were in correct status. I waited for a long time before attempting a reboot. Since then i don't see anything on the screen after the initial BIOS screen (Which is also all jumbled up). I tried F8 (BIOS) and F11(Restore) but no screen. Don't know what to do but i am pretty sure that Laptop is working ok just not displaying anything. I am going to try Remote desktop on it now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try this, boot into safe mode.

When device manager opens, look at your graphics card normally under "display adapters" - any crosses or red splats?

I'm running Vista on my Gateway laptop. Twice now I've tried to create backup disks and both times it results in a bluescreen error message and a memory dump that disappears before I can read it. The error occurs after the DVD-RW is finished formatting and just a few minutes into the actual copying of files.

"Problem Reports and Solutions" popped up about 10 minutes after I re-started. Here's what that said:

Hello, Recently, my system was found to be infected with malware and was removed with assistance from Moderators- Pizza and Pepsi/Boopme here in this forum. However, I'm not able to to update MS Office 2007 to service pack 3 and it may or may not be due to malware infection found in the system. Additionally, upon PC bootup, an error screen with Window XP Advanced options Menu shows up every time. It must be noted that I'm able to logon to Windows XP in Normal mode without any issues. Malware infections detected by MBAM and ESETSCan were RECYCLERS- Rogue.FakeAV and Win32/MessengerPlus.A application variant. They were quarantined and removed successfully. Following Boopme's instructions, I had run DDS as well as GMER scans and I have posted them below for analysis. Please note that the scans were run 4 days ago and hopefully they are good enough for troubleshooting purposes.I have also posted the link to the topic posted in Am I Infected? thread for better understanding.Awaiting further instructions,Thank you - Referral LinkVarious Reports below.DDS (Ver_2011-08-26.01) - NTFSx86 Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702 BrowserJavaVersion: 10.5.1Run by Twinkle at 22:10:31 on 2012-07-01Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.894.202 [GMT -4:00].AV: Rogers Online Protection Anti-Virus *Enabled/Updated* {5B5A3BD7-8573-4672-AEA8-C9BB713B6755}FW: Rogers Online Protection Firewall *Enabled* .===========... Hello all, hoping I can get some help with this.

I have an HP Pavillion dv9000 laptop computer with an nvidia video card. I do not have all the specs handy but due to the problem I'll explain below.

I had been playing WoW for a while when occasionally the game would freeze and my monitor would switch off and on and there would be a message stating the display driver had to be reinitialized. I didnt think anything of it but then it happened one time and I got a blue screen message that flashed on and off quickly before the computer shut down. I couldnt make out much beyond "display driver error" and when i turned the computer back on the monitor was totally blank no matter how many times i rebooted. I let the computer sit for a while unplugged and with the battery removed and it began working properly but then it happened again and now it is not returning to normal. I cannot see anything but I can hear the computer working. Anyone have any ideas what I can do about this?

I was working on my pc today, when an error message came up that said something like windows has encountered a fatal error and must shut down... if this is the first time you have seen this message restart, otherwise... it said something about it may be caused by low disk space... After restarting, now I just get a blank screen...nothing.. no beeps, no bios. The fan on the cpu spins and the light on the board comes on, but no output... I tried putting in the ram sticks one by one to see if one was bad. I plugged another power supply in to no avail... Any advice on where to go from here greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I ran into a computer problem a week back, saying that my system was unable to start due to "boot critical file ci.dll is corrupt." I tried restarting to no avail, as well as recovery options. This is due to the fact that I do not have administrator access to my own computer. So, I purchased the EasyRE after reading multiple reviews testifying to its ease and help in solving nearly everyone's problems. It sounded too good to be true, and I guess it really was. Upon trying to fix my problems, it would simply stall, even if I left it alone for  up to 8 hours at a time; no resolution of my problems were made. Now, my computer upon booting, displays this message. "No g2ldr"
I ordered recovery media from my manufacturer, Lenovo, but when using it, it gets as far as loading its files, before I am met with a blank screen with a cursor on it. The CD in question is an OS recovery disc for Windows 7. Sometimes, I am met with a screen that tells me that a recent hardware or software change may be causing the problem, and the problem is a Boot\BCD error. So, I do not have access to the windows command prompt, but I do have access to the EasyRE command prompt. Could I repair the BCD or find a solution while in this system?
PS: I don't think I have a virus, having used the Avira rescue system to scan my drive for viruses/trojan horses.

A:No g2ldr, and blank screen with cursor otherwise, a Boot\BCD error occurs

Please help me. I am losing my mind. Also I am never ever buying an HP laptop again, this thing has been nothing but trouble for me.

My friend and I were watching videos on The Colbert Report website and let the laptop go into sleep mode while we went out to eat. Upon returning, it would not turn on. All of the LEDs turn on for a second and turn off. Sometimes, inexplicably, they will stay on longer and the computer sounds like it's trying to boot from the CD drive, but nothing ever shows onscreen and the lights promptly turn off, then on for a moment, then off again.

I'm getting a blank screen when my computer boots up. Not even a Bios screen or anything. But, Win 7 seems to boot up fine in the background. I can hear the welcome chime in the background after a little bit.
I was in the process of putting in a new SSD when this happened. Tried to unplug it and restart, but same problem. Now I have everything else unplugged but the graphics card, and the old hdds. Still nothing but blank screen.
I'm wondering if it's the graphics card or the power supply that are spotty. Fan is spinning on the graphics card, but I'm not sure what to make of that by itself.
Not quite sure what to do now....

I have a Win XP Home edition that fails to boot; the POST screen loads, then a choice of operating system configurations (see later), and selecting  one of them (the last on the list) returns can’t find hal.dll.
The other two options, one of which I have set up in the course of trying to sort this out, both end up with a blank screen.
Safe mode hangs up in the middle of the driver list.
The problem started after a power cut.
I have fairly exhaustively investigated and tried to fix this as follows:-

The files on all the partitions are all visible using file explorers on bootable recovery CDs (ERD Commander and HIRENS). I have been able to back up the important data. The operating system files are on C partition only.

I have a refurbished, out-of-warranty Gateway Profile 5 desktop. The screen is totally blank. I contacted Gateway. They are pretty confident the built-in display is defective. I was able to attach a second display which would also go blank just after the Windows XP Pro splash screen appeared. Using the 2nd display, I was able to access the bios. When I looked at the display setup, it was set to LCD & CRT. Not thinking, I changed the setting to LCD since I wasn't using a CRT. That disconnected my 2nd display, so I now have two totally blank screens. How can I re-access the 2nd display and then also avoid a blank screen when Windows XP boots up?

I've got a problem with my laptop, a 2010 HP G60-635DX. First, a little history. This was my wife's laptop until she dropped it and broke the display screen. We hooked it up to a monitor and she was good to go. Last Christmas I got her a new computer and again she was all set. In the meanwhile I've been using this old Dell laptop from 2006 with WinXP in it. Works, but is slow as all get out. A few months ago I decided to use my wife's old computer for myself. It comes with Windows 7 and works quite well. Last June I made the mistake of trying the Windows 10 upgrade, and what a disaster that turned out to be. So I reverted back to Win7, but I lost all the drivers that came with it, so I was stuck. So recently I bought a new screen for my wife's old computer, and I installed it today. So guess what? The screen works fine, but all I get is a blank white screen Nothing at all! It's as if the computer can't display anything at all. I just don't understand it. The computer fires up, but that's it. No start screen, no nothing. Just a blank white screen.
Anybody have any ideas as to what's wrong, and how I could fix this?

At this point I would only like to know everyone's opinion on whether I may be infected with a virus of somekind.....

Here is my problem:

After running Chkdsk yesterday my computer loaded the windows splash screen and then went blank. I am not sure if these two events are related. I can here the startup sound. My mouse does not show up and alt-tab or ctrl-alt-del does not work as other google searches have suggested.

Safe mode works fine.

Running with the video card driver disabled works fine.

Running either my main video card or my onboard video card with the driver installed causes a blank screen. I have dual monitors.

I have ran malware bytes and it finds nothing.

Here are some other strange symptoms:

Firefox beta 4 recently stopped loading with error 0xc000007b

IE (32bit) recently started downloading html sites instead of loading them, though this doesn't seem to happen in safe-mode. The 64-bit version worked fine.

In safe mode when help pops up I get the error "unable to download / from windows"

Windows update also doesn't seem to even open in safe mode.

As stated before, at this point I would like to know everyone's opinion on whether I may be infected with a virus of some kind, or if it may be a different problem such as a corruption in windows. Thanks

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Windows 7 has a very robust System Restore. Have you tried invoking System Restore? You can access System Restore from the Advanced Options menu by pressing F8 during startup, selecting Repair Your Computer from that menu, select the keyboard layout, then choose System Restore from the System Recovery Options screen which appears. Choose a restore point before the issue arose.

System Restore - Windows 7 Forums

If you're able to perform a System Restore, post new logs from DDS as this one shall be closed to place you in the queue.

There are at least 45 to 50 updates available for Win7. Please update Windows from Windows Update and see if that fixes your issues.

Once that's done, please resubmit the reports and we'll see what we can extract from them then.

When rebooting my computer, after the windows splash screen the screen just goes blank. A few days ago I put back an old Nvidia Ti4200 card into the machine (which has previously worked fine on it). It booted up with no problems. However, now it just won't boot (it's probably the second time it's had to boot with this card). The only think I can think of is that I tried installing the latest nvidia drivers which crashed (however it had not yet started copying the files).

Any ideas?

EDIT: Nevermind managed to fix it, the VGA drivers were corrupt

I'd say that faulty install was probably to blame. If you haven't already, try going into Safe Mode and doing a system restore (if you're using XP). Otherwise, I'm not sure at the moment.

Screen goes blank after the "Windows XP Home Edition" comes on. At first, it looks like a normal boot process. The indicator bar below the logo is moving. But after the screen goes blank, it does not reappear. The hard drive is still running, the audio is still working, but still no screen. Raster is visible, but no text or any other video. Works in safe mode, even tried to restore to a day that is was still working, but still no go. FYI- this a Dell Inspiron 8200. Would appreciate any help or leads before I using the system restore CD.

btw, I did do a search and looked through a ton of the posts but couldnt find this specific problem... and in fact I know a way to fix it when it happens.. but I'm more concerned with preventing it from happening...

Heres the setup: 50 computers all exactly the same (hardware/software):
Dell GX748 (i think thats the #)
Windows XP sp2
ATI x300 (i think - Regardless of the exact video card, it uses the ATI Catalyst control center...)

Ok, so i come to a computer - its past the point of screensaver to where windows "turns off" the monitor.. I try and get back in, but the screen remains blank, and is not responding. I'll hold the power button to shut it off, restart it... It will go through the start up process (dell splash, bios info, etc, windows loading screen) then BLANK, and unresponsive.. Now after shutting it down again, i will be prompted about how i want to start windows since it did not start normally.. I'll do safe mode and get in just fine.. The fix is to go to display properties and change the resolution & restart... after that windows starts normally!

So why is this happening?
** I know its not responding because, for one, there are no beeps when there should be (trying to press random buttons while the station is not logged in - CTRL+ALT+DELETE to enter password box), and pressing the power button does not shut it down as it would @ the login screen..

I was trying to remedy the "plugged in but not charging" problem, clicked on something in the power section in a screen that came up after clicking on the power icon, and the screen went blank. I tried re-starting. I removed the battery and AC and held the power button for 30s. No change. When I power up, everything seems normal until the Lenovo splash screen comes up, the spinny dots start going, then the screen goes blank and stays blank. If I pull the AC, the screen  blinks on for 0.1 second before the machine dies. HELP!

I think this is the right place to put this.

So I have a friends computer here. It boots up seemingly ok, but after the windows splash screen in goes blank, but a black screen, but the screen is still on. You hear the fans spin up to full speed for a bit, and everything then sounds like its running fine....just no picture

So i did some googling and I found another person with the same issue and it was caused by a faulty video card. So I put in a crappy video card i had laying around. Still get the same issue.

Next I tried booting to the last know good configuration. Same issue.

So i tired booting in same mode. I hangs on Windows\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys

If it helps the video card that was in there i think is a GeForce MX4000.

I do know its a Windows xp home system

Only other thing I know is its a custom built machine. It was running fine until a few days ago. My friend says he thinks the machine has over heated 3 or 4 times in the past.

Hope someone can help.

Our organization requires Laptops to be Encrypted with a PIN #. One of our Laptops is giving me trouble. I have Bitlocker turned on and fully encrypted and have require Startup PIN with TPM in the Require additional authentication at startup in GPEDIT. I also have the Enable use of Bitlocker Authentication Requiring preboot Keyboard input on Slates enabled. When turning on the Laptop Bitlocker comes up with the light blue screen where you enter the PIN but the screen is blank. It doesn't say Bitlocker or have a box to enter the PIN #. Now I can just type the pin # and press enter and it works and loads windows as normal. I obviously can't give this Laptop to a user like this.

Anybody have any suggestions as to a resolution to this issue.
Thank You.

Okay we were hooking our laptop up to the TV to watch hulu on it. Somehow I think we are stuck on the second screen because we can move the cursor and drag icons and stuff over to it. I don't know how to get back to the first screen. I can try to explain more if nobody knows what I'm talking about.

HELP!

This is a HP G70-227CL notebook pc, he has had it for a little over a year. He was on his email today and all of a sudden it went to a black screen and froze up. He rebooted it and when it restarted it gave us two options to restart normally or to let it fix the problem which was recomended and so we let it fix it.
It sat for about an hour or more with a black screen while we waited finaly changed to a dark blue then light blue then finally a box came up and wanted us to click on a opering drive below to fix the problem, but there was no operating drive listed in the box below.
It then said in the bottom to click load if nothing there, so we clicked load and it wanted us to insert an installation disk to load the drive and he had never got no instalation disks when he purchased the laptop. It took him about 20 min before he could get out of it, it was moving very very slow and not wanting to respond. It ended up shutting itself off and when it came back on it asked us again which option we wanted we tried the normal hoping it would give us something besides a blank screen, it started to come on normally then it jumped back to the first screen to give us the options again. it ended up deciding for itself to do the recomended option before we could click on anything and went back to a black screen. That is how it sits now, we have a white mouse arrow on the screen we can move around, it dont act frozen no more, but al lit has is a black screen.

Hey guys, Ive posted here a long time ago about virus problems, and I am back to ask a question about computers.

I had purchased an alienware computer in 2005 and not only has it been constantly giving me problems but I have had to install the OS several times.

Now, just today I was playing Garrys Mod, making a cool spaceship....Yea its really cool, haha, anyways, right in the middle my computer just shut off, then turned on by itself. Everything was fine, until it got to the user log in screen and it was just black, no mouse, nothing. It was still functional because when I used the arrow keys to log in it worked fine, but all my icons were invisible the start menu was invisible and only the desktop background was visible. I restarted the computer several times and it didnt work. Can anyone help me out? I dont want to get rid of all my programs.

A:Screen Goes Blank On User Log-in Screen

Also I have tried system recovery and it requires me to put in a floppy disk, but none came with the computer.

My screen blacks out randomly during games. As far as I can tell, the game/computer freezes as nothing I do changes anything and I have to go around the computer, yank out the power cord and stick it back in.

Games include:
Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War
Duke Nukem 3D
Bejewelled 2 [Deluxe]
The Sims
Medal of Honour: AA

I've d/led all of the latest drivers for my graphics card (Radeon X300), I have DirectX 9.0c, I've tried yelling at my monitor and now I don't know what to do next...

This is really pissing me off. I can't even complete the TUTORIAL of DoW before the screen goes black and I have to make my trip around the desk.

Note: The screen says "No signal detected" when it screws up, so it's not the screen recieving a "black" signal, it's not recieving any information whatsoever.

Maybe they've had a fight and don't want to talk to each other? My modem and PC had an argument like that a while ago... >_>

A:Blue screen? No - blank screen.

Probably heat related if it runs normally otherwise. Take the side off the case and point a house fan at it while playing, see if it makes a difference. If it does, you need to get better cooling, or rearrange the cooling you have for better airflow.

I've scoured the interwebs - including dozens of threads here - trying to find the solution to my problem. I'm trying to fix a Dell Dimension 3000 that was handed off to me. It appears to have no upgrades or replacements whatsoever. I don't have any info leading up to the issue.

The windows start screen loads, then the monitor goes blank. My first thoughts were: bad onboard video adapter or bad drivers. F2, F8 and F12 do nothing. Well, F8 and F12 gave me a split second glimpse at the generic "keyboard failure" message, minus the last line prompting for F1 to continue or F2 to run the diagnostic test (before turning blank). And pressing F2 at the start up changes the text at the top right corner of the screen to "Entering Set Up", but it will still immediately go blank.

I put a ps2-to-usb adapter on the keyboard and tried moving it to a USB port. That did resolve the "keyboard failure" message from popping, but that's all. I added a pci video card (GeForce 6200). That didn't resolve anything. I checked the CMOS battery. It was dead, so I replaced it, which also did nothing. I have an XP start/repair disc, but can't boot from anything but the HDD, so that's useless. I assume switching out the motherboard would be a fix, but I'd like this done sooner than it would take to order a motherboard. Any suggestions/insight would be greatly appreciated.

The motherboard would cost you a fortune. Trash it!

Please help me remove this blank screen.
It was fine some 15 days ago..... as soon as... the power was turned ON, the OS select screen appeared.

A:Blank screen before OS select screen

If something was fine and now it isn't we usually look for changes. Did you install any software or change anything?

Can you check the Windows update history to see if any updates were done around the time the problem started.

I've been using my laptop for a while now and had a friend install Windows 7 onto it (because i'm quite rubbish with this sort of thing) and everything has been going great until a few weeks ago.

I loaded it up one day and everything is going fine until it reaches the part where it's supposed to load the log on screen. Instead of a log on screen all i am getting is a black screen with the cursor. Now i can't give you specs to my computer or anything of the like because i simply don't have access to it but i can give as much aid as possible to help find the problem.

One of the things that happens is that when the black screen & cursor appears if i move the mouse or push any buttons the screen goes VERY dim as if i've put it into a lower power mode or i've taken out the power cable. If i push the power button to turn it off even if it's just a tap on the button the screen will go off immediatly even if the laptop is still running.

One of the green lights that i believe is showing if the hard drive is busy or not flashes during the process but after a minute or so of the black screen it'll stop flashing altogether.

I've tried all three safe modes with all the same results, F8 to system repair has given me no love with startup repair finding NOTHING wrong, memory check running through the process only for the same thing to happen and system restore has no restore points to go to.

I've looked for answers in several places and some say i have to use sticky keys to get the... Read more

A:Blank Screen with cursor but no log on screen

If you use Restore Points, have you exported one to a USB or CD?

I would try that and recover where you last were. It seems odd that this would just happen so suddenly, do you know of any recent changes that took place on the machine? New hardware or software? Updates?

As a last resort you can try and reboot the system and boot from a CD with a 3rd party OS bootable by USB or CD, create a new partition, and then copy any files you need to that partition. Wipe out the affected partition and try installing a fresh OS.

Can anyone help me solve this issue ... i have no idea why it's not accepting the upgrade.

That error code is usually associated with the Windows Firewall. What firewall software are you using? have you customised the configuration?

If it worked before and it's giving you an error now, you may have been infected. How does your antivirus work? Will it update?
