Used Robocopy and deleted my files - how can I recover them?

Q: Used Robocopy and deleted my files - how can I recover them?

Hi

I've just re-organised my hard drives and I've set up a batch routine to backup my files, using Robocopy.

However, as I swapped my drives around, I've copied in the wrong direction. Robocopy has consequently deleted entire folders of important data.

The data isn't in the recycle bin.

What should I do to try and recover the data?

Thanks

A: Used Robocopy and deleted my files - how can I recover them?

Is the partition unharmed and still visible in Explorer and Windows Disk Managment?

If it's unharmed, I'd consider PhotoRec or Recuva to recover the files. Both are free.

Ontrack Easy Recovery Professional is also said to be excellent, but I think you ultimately have to pay. Maybe $79?? It will show you the files it can recover, but won't let you actually recover them until you pay.

I'm assuming Robocopy doesn't have any type of "undo" capability.

A:Recover deleted files

It's possible the filles may still be there. First try to undelete in your recycle bin. If that's a no go, there are a few commercial recovery programs out there. The only way you can possibily undelete files that have already been deleted in the recycle bin is using such a program provided the files have not been overwritten. If you write something to the same disk it doesn't necessarily mean your deleted files have been overwritten.
If a file recovery program doesn't work, they're gone forever.

My non-technical brother bought an external hard drive then "synched" that drive to a folder on his internal hard drive that held (of course) all of the pictures of the kids. He claims he then deleted the folder from his internal hard drive and everything was gone from his external hard drive. Nothing in the recycle bin either.

I've never used an external hard drive, so I don't know if any of what he's saying even makes sense, but the bottom line is that he would like to get out of the doghouse and get the pictures back. Does anyone know if this is possible?

I've heard that no file is ever really erased from your hard drive its really just a matter of how much you want to pay to get it back.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

On one of my laptops I recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. Usually when I upgrade it automatically creates a Windows.Old folder in my C Drive where I can access all my files from before the upgrade. But this time there was no Windows.Old folder. So I downloaded and ran a file recovery program...it found 0 old deleted files. I ran that same program on a different laptop and it worked fine. So where could the deleted files have went and how can I access them?

A:Can't Recover Deleted Files

Upgrades do not delete any files. They would be in the same location as they were when you left them.

If you did not upgrade, but installed a fresh copy of 7, the files are most likely underneath the OS and lost. The installation of the OS uses about twice the drive space that the final installation uses, so everything would have been written over.

I need to recover deleted files from the hard drive. Someone suggested Recuva, which is a free recovery tool, but my scan says its not safe. Then i found StellarPhoenixWindowsDataRecovery, which is free download until you actually tell it to recover the file, then you have to buy it. This is the first time I had to use this type of tool.

Can you give me input and recommendations as to recovery tools that actually work, both free and paid for? I prefer free since I may not ever need to do it again. If I have to pay, I have to pay.

Hi all,

I deleted my Outlook .pst files and I need to recover; i purchased PC Tools data recovery program but it's not working for me.

At my work place we work on a roaming profile; i had problems loading my profile this morning and what i normally do is reload my profile by deleting my profile and then restarting my machine. I've done this before with no problems but this time it deleted my .pst file. Is there something else I can do to recover or get my .pst file back?

Thank you in advance.

Today I deleted sixteen files that I needed - they weren't sent to the recycle bin as I usually hold down shift and delete together so I don't have to empty the recycle bin often. I know there are many file recovery programs available that you have to pay for, but as I only need to recover around 16 files I was wondering if any of you knew about a deleted file recovery program which was free, even if it was for a limited time. I tried downloading some demos but they either only allowed small files to be recovered or didn't let you recover any files without paying.

The files I deleted were no more than 100k/b, and I use Windows 98 SE. Anybody know of any recover deleted file programs that would help me?

A:how to recover deleted files

Do a Google search for "File Recovery" and you will find hundreds (actually millions) of links to software that will do what you want. Bear in mind, though, a hard disk that has been in constant use (reading and writing) will have over-written many of the files (or parts of the files) and those will not be recoverable.

Hello
I used to have almost an entire hard drive (50 gb) worth of .wmv files (ripped my dvd collection). I had to delete all of it since I thought I would need the space for other files. That turned out not to be necessary so now I'm wondering if there is a way to get that data back. The entire folder was deleted - I think Windows said it was too big to put in the bin. I did not do any other work on that drive since.

I tried using some popular recovery programs: Recuva, Undelete plus, restore but they don't seem to get a trace of the files. Instead they display some bizzare files which appear to be from a previous windows instalation. Now I find it unlikely that the entire collection of over 100 hundred files would just dissappear without a trace. So maybe I'm doing something wrong or using the wrong software? I'd appreciate a hand.

edit: if you know about affordable commercial software that would do the job feel free to recommend

Oye. Where to start. I had a problem on my comptuer, so I had to reinstall XP. All is well. I have "roaming profiles" set up on a "server" [really is just my profile on a XP Pro machine w/ a big hard drive]. They are on their own partition. I set my new install machine profile point to the place where it should be. I wanted to use it right away and not wait for it to copy the 12gb of My Documents to my computer at the moment, so I moved them to a different folder. I logged on, and did what I wanted to do. Then I moved My Documents back to the profile folder on the server. Logged off of my computer and logged back on. My Documents is GONE! Apparently, since when I logged on there wasn't a My Documents, and when I logged off, it was there, Windows thought it would get rid of it...and it did. I tried several data recovery programs, and only one was able to recover some of my files, but about 90% of them are useless. A document is just a bunch of ??Ya94~9??A ect ect. Pictures are unreadable, music is corrupt. I'm very organized, and have everything set up into folders and sub-folders upon sub-folders ect. I'd like to not have to find out where everything goes, but if all else fails, I guess I could. Its about 12gb, and if there is any way of getting it back, I'd GREATLY appreciate it. I called a guy who does this for a living, $500 flat rate, and if successsful $100/gb. It's not worth that much, but it has a LOT of value ... Read more

i tried a system restore but it wouldnt give me back my photos.. and then ended up somehow loosing all my system restore poins after that..???
i have the recycle bin turned off so all files are deleted instead of being moved to the bin..

Hello,

I accidentally deleted a folder that has many files in my portable drive. They are not in the recycle bin as I set it for immediately deletion. So I purchased a data recovery program online and it found the deleted files. When I restored and opened the files, they were corrupted. Is there a reliable program that can recover the files efficiently? The Internet has so many programs and I don't know which to pick.

Many thanks.

A:How do I recover deleted files?

Has anything been copied onto the drive since the deletion? If it has, the locations where the deleted files were may have been overwritten by new files. If this has happened, recovered files will be corrupt, and no recovery software will be able to recover them correctly.

If nothing has been transferred to the drive since the folder was deleted, then it's a disappointment that paid software fails to recover them. Well-regarded recovery programs include Recuva, PcInspector and GetDataBack (paid). Other posters may have other recommendations from their experience.

I'm running windowsXP professional, I've deleted a folder from documents and settings/unknown user.

my logitech webcam had saved all its data files in there. Is there any way to recover the files. The recycle bin has been emptied already before I realized what I lost.
I've tried a utility called "drive rescue" , It found some of the files but not many and the jpg files that it recovered are not recognized as pictures, just get binary data. The folder was over 3.5 gigs, I know, I know, I'm a bonehead for not being more careful. I should never drink and pute.
Does anyone know of any better utility that can go into the free space and recover everything? I remember using Norton Utility when it was a DOS utility years ago. I hated NU 3.0 for windows.

There are many programs out there that profess to recover such files and may do the job, however most if not all are costly.
Here is a list of many of them. Some allow you do download and try in a view mode to see if the files are recoverable before you buy. I am also moving this thread to WinXP with a subject change so others may spot the problem and maybe have a better suggestion.
Here is the listing I mentioned.

i don't do/recommend the quick format.

even with the quick format, reinstalling overwrites the old data.

data recovery can be very expensive and if the oe fies weren't overwritten they may be recoverable.

i keep docs, address book on floppies, music on cd's and if i want to save emails, i email them to myself and recover them when i setup oe/outlook.

Hi guys,

However right now I'm in big trouble. My brother decided to install some linux distro
on the laptop that we both use. He decided me without asking if I have some important
info there. He told me that he wanted to make a dual boot system (I'm not fully aware how it works)
and he said that he did it before, but now just erased my whole disk by mistake.

I thought that this is some bad joke, but when I checked (I gave the laptop to friend of mine who run live some software to show partitions) the whole disk was emty except some folders of the new OS.

I cant describe how I feel right now. Is there a way something to be saved? He told me that he shuted down the system on the moment he realized what was going on and not even 1% of the new OS was instilled. But the fact is that there is nothing anymore...

Please help guys!
Thanks in advance!

It created a new user with the same name but none of the files were there. We tried to do a system restore from before the update but the files still weren't there and we got an error message saying the restore failed and the files were unchanged. Is there any way to get my files back that were saved under the account I need them. I use 64-bit.

A:Recover Deleted user and files

Hello UltimateHedgehog, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Unfortunately, a System Restore will not affect user files. It's only for system files and instead.

You might check to see if you have a C:\Users\(user name) folder with the old user account name still there. If your Dad only deleted the old user account from within User Accounts in the Control Panel, then it may still be there to copy over to the new account.

Since you have Vista Ultimate, you might also see if you can use Previous Versions with the C:\Users folder to see the old user name folder or files can be restored.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi, I used Puran to recover some deleted files from my external hard drive and when I open some of the files I get the following message:

"This document could not be registered . It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document."

The documents still fully open and they look like they are all there. Also, when I look at the properties of some of the folders they say there is 0 bytes in them. I did the recovery twice, once selectively with only the files that I thought I needed such as .doc and .pdf, and again with everything including files such as .cab . chm .dwg .hlp .mdf. Two identical recovered folders from each recovery say they have a different amount of data in them.

My question is: are there supporting files that need to be recovered along with the .doc and .pdf files to fix the issues and to make sure i have recovered everything, such as the .cab .chm etc?  I didnt the extra files were necessary but on further research they might be files needed by word. Are they only needed for the program and not individual files?

Thanks for the help!

I noticed I had two copies of the My Documents folder, one in my user folder where I want it, and the other buried deep in my pictures folder (I think I accidentally dragged and dropped it there once when I was trying to change the order of icons in the navigation pane). I deleted the one in my pictures folder, and both folders disappeared!

What happened?

I closed the screen out, re-opened "my computer," and see both My Documents folders back, but empty.

1) How can I recover my files? My last backup was last week, and I've written quite a bit since then. I was actually about to back up again when I saw the annoying second folder and deleted it, not realizing they were linked. The folder was too large and bypassed the recycle bin.

2) How can I fix the two folders issue? I have the same problem with my music folder also, and have had problems with the folders under my username seeming to disappear, reappear, and move for no apparent reason.

The computer has Windows 7 Professional.

Thanks for any help.

However I think I may have accidentally installed instead of doing a repair option. I canceled when I noticed it but I believe the installation already have maybe deleted the partition?

Anyways, is there a way to get back the files that were originally on there? I don't mind re installing windows after I have extracted the old files.

I was thinking of using a bootable flashdrive and running certain programs that will recover the old files. Any way of doing so? What programs/ bootable flashdrive should I use?

hello guys, got a problem
my ex got into my aptm and deleted some folders (my pictures folder) from my pc, tried to goto recycler but they are not there so i think she deleted from there too...

anyway to get those files back?.....

Thank you.

A:[SOLVED] Can i recover files deleted from the recycle bin

Yes. Don't delete anything else though as you may over write them. The files in the recycled bin aren't actually deleted, but rather Windows stops indexing them. Download Recuver and run it.

Hi guys,

I was using Windows 8.1 then upgraded to Windows 10, but all of my personal files has deleted and I tried best of recovery programs and they're not helped me.
So, if I roll back to my previous version of Windows, does my personal files recoverd?

Thanks for you.

A:How do I recover my deleted files after upgrading to Windows 10?

No. Rollback doesn't affect personal files. In fact to do a rollback would make chances of recovering files worse as you would be writing more to the disk.

If you don't have backup and can't recover them they are lost unfortunately.

I created another admin user account, deleted my original admin user account and did not save the files ( I thought the files related to the actual user profile only).Disaster! All my files, emails, years of work..gone.How do I begin to recover all my work.

A:Recover deleted user account and files - XP Pro

Deleted files can be recovered with file recovery software. I use PC Inspector File Recovery. There are others.

First off, when files are deleted, they're not really deleted. The pointer to the file location is deleted. All the data remains, it's just that the computer doesn't know where to find them anymore without file recovery software. If you keep using the computer that has the deleted files, the space the files are using could potentially get overwritten by other files, thereby making recovery less possible. Windows constantly writes temporary data to the disk. Any of this data could overwrite your files.

I suggest you turn off that computer, take the hard drive out, and put it in another computer as a slave drive to run the file recovery program.

Once the drive is in another computer, use a file recovery program (search google for 'file recovery' or 'undelete files', etc.) to scan the slave drive for deleted files. You should be able to get most, if not all, of your files back.

If that's out of your experience level, find a good computer technician in your area to do the recovery. Don't go to your local multimedia store to find one, go to an independent computer store. They usually know what they're doing.

The important thing is to stop using the computer until your files are recovered.

Well, if the saved data was overwritten with the new install of Vista, not likely recoverable without spending a ton of money. There is a possibility of recovery otherwise. Hello ktoffersen,

Welcome to TSG!

Please see the following (quoted from quietman8 over at BC).

When AdwCleaner is first run to clean adware, it will create a new folder located at C:\AdwCleaner. The AdwCleaner folder contains sub-folders for Backup and Quarantine. Each of these folders contain sub-folders of the exact location (full path) an entry was removed from. In the event you want to restore an item, simply run AdwCleaner again.

Click Quarantine manager.
A log file of what was removed will open in a new window.
Scroll through the list and find the entry you want to restore.
Place a check mark in the box next to the entry(s).
Click the Restore button.

Hello,

I have a simple question for which I could not find the answer after searching the web for hours. There are lots of applications to salvage deleted files and folders. However, when we have several thousands files to recover, it is almost impossible to relocate them to their original places because the time spent to do it could easily go over one year . Whoever tried it knows this is true .

For Mac there is an app with the ability to recover and rebuild the lost directories right to the locations where they used to be; it is DiscWarrior. I have about 13Gb of files and directories to recover, is is a complete branch of the root directory of a HD. They are my private files, not OS files easily replaceable. My question is: -Is there an app to do this job for Windows as DiscWarrior does for Mac? I know a few years ago there was nothing, even if DiscWarrior was already old, but with the time one might have came up and I can't find it .

This simple answer could be a great help as you can realise, and I would be very, very thankful for the tip.

To recover a file that was accidentally deleted

Locate the folder where the deleted file was stored (on the network), right-click the folder, and click Properties. The Properties dialog box will appear.

On the Previous Versions tab, double-click the most recent version of the folder that contains the file that you want to recover. A list of files that are stored in that previous version will appear.

Right-click the file that was accidentally deleted and click Copy.

Hi,

I have just lost a few extremely important images for work and hope with all my heart that I will be able to recover them. I transferred about 10 images from my phone's DCIM to a folder on my desktop using 'cut' (first mistake). Within the folder on my desktop, I started to rename the images. I renamed one of them incorrectly and started to press 'ctrl + z'. I pressed 'ctrl + z' one too many times and poof the images were gone. The folder that I had just created to store the images was gone as well. In panic I checked my recycle bin, my phone's directory, and then went back to my desktop spamming 'ctrl +y'. The only thing 'ctrl + y' was able to recover was an empty "new folder" on my desktop. Is it possible to retrieve these disappearing files?

I am at a lost. Please help

Hi All

ive spend a LONG time seaching the net trying to find a solution to this odd problem which im surprised can and did actually happen.

Basically i had the My Documents folder as a sharing file on my old network. After joining a new network when i moved i tried to remove the folder from My Sharing folder but seem to have deleted the actual My Documents folder and all the files contained within it.

As such all my photos and files are now removed/deleted or misplaced the within windows XP. My hard drive is still showing as having the same amount of free space as it did prior to me deleting my documents so im thinking that perhaps the files that were previously within my documents folder have been lost or moved somewhere? ive checked obvious places like Recycle Bin but cant locate them anywhere even via the Search function for all files.

FYI There is one account on the laptop which is password protected that i use to log in, its an admin account so should have full access to everything.

When i go in trying to locate the folder from My computer as per the below this is the message i get. Its the same from every shortcut to My Documents too.

'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents is not accessible

ive run Chkdsk and tried a number of other things but would really appreciate any suggestions as im now on the verge of accepting that ive lost all my photos (2 most recent sets werent backed up - im stupid i know!) and need to do a fresh insta... Read more

So, my problem started earlier this week when I tried to scan my Hard Drive using my antivirus system. Never do that.
My Vaoi laptop froze at 27% during the scan, and I had to manually shut it off (hold down the power button) and then restart it. Well, it started the scan again, and got stuck again, so I had to restart it again. The next time, I was able to read this millisecond long message about how to "cancel dskchk by pressing any key", so I did, but then it just took forever to load and opened on an error message saying that windows couldn't load, or something along those lines.

Eventually, after figuring out how to open safe mode, I tried to use a Restore point (which didn't work), Refresh the System (which couldn't complete), do a lot of maintenance scans (none of which helped), consult the internet off of my friend's computer (where I heard about the windows.old folder), and then I was finally forced to use the Vaio Recovery Tool and do an emergency backup onto my new External Hard Drive... I recently download a backup program that deleted everything off my external hard drive. There is now basically nothing on my external, so I doubt any data was overwritten. I have a Western Digital 800BB External USB 2 with FAT32. I've tried almost every program I can get a freeware/trial version of and haven't had any luck. A few of them have shown me some of the files I am interested in but are missing quite a few I want. I've also tried restoring a few .avi files that did show up and all I get is a bunch of my mp3 files oddly strung together. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I plug this USB drive mostly into my computer at work, which is on a huge network and very protected by our IT department, meaning I don't have administrator priveleges on the machine/can't install anything and probably can't recover anything.

I hesitate to ask for our IT department's help becuase they are... uh... not very helpful even when it's work-related. :-(

Where could my files have gone??!! They are not in my deleted folder. Can I get them back??

You'll probably need to install some data recovery software. If this is your personal drive then you can do the recovery at home where you should be able to install software to run a recovery.

Not with certainty. It's hit and miss. Don't count on it.

"Deleting" in effect removes the file from the drive's "index" so it can't be found by standard means.

Specialized software may still be able to locate and recover the file if that space on the hard drive has not actually been overwritten and occupied by another file.

Recuva and GetDataBack are two such programs.

Some free software will tell you if the file can be recovered, but may make you pay to actually recover it.

The original file name may be lost.

Then there are professional data recovery services that examine the drive in a laboratory for a high fee--$1000 or more. Such services may have a higher degree of success.

I've fiddled with the free software a few times, but never had much luck.

Thanks for the alert about the dup. thread. I closed it.

When you don't have a backup I don't know what can be done except for trying recovery software, as you have, or if the data has suddenly become very important there are companies who can, at least sometimes, succeed where free software fails.

A:Anybody with experience using backup to recover deleted files, not whole system?

It depends on what did the backup. With Acronis and most other imagers, you can mount the backup as a drive and get any files you want that way.

But, if the files you want are more recent, there may be multiple shadow copies of those previous files right on your hard drive. You can use Previous Version on the property sheet of a file or folder. Or you can mount a restore point as a drive and get files that way using System Restore Explorer.

WinMount is a program that can mount just about anything mountable to allow access to files.

If the computer hasn't been used much since the recovery most of your files will be intact.

The tricky bit is getting them back. The only real way to retrieve your data is to remove the hard drive, plug it into another computer as a second drive and run a piece if recovery software over it.

The first two links are to free recovery software, the third is paid for - this one does work very well.

You can find by the net EASY RECOVER PRO, WINTERNALS DISK COMMANDER and other similar recovering programs. But I checked these programs cannot truly recover deleted partitions and files. They just appearance ($) recover programs. These weak programs cannot recover files/partition from a disk which were just the MBR sector erased!
Do u know a program really works on recovering?

thanks!

A:Programs 2 recover deleted partitions/files [NTFS/FATx]

I have a utility called Lost and found that is the best I have found. I don't even know if it is still available or not. I'm sure you could find a copy somewhere though. I don't even remember if or what it costs. To use it, you run it in DOS from its floppies and point it to the disk to recover then point it to a place to save the files. It is easy to use.

As with all recovery software, it isn't going to recover everything and will possibly recover nothing. I have used it to recover much of the data from disks which have been formatted and repartitioned though I have also not been able to do the same.

First off I am not at the programs own forum cos I cant recall either my pword or username so cant login or re-register. Secondly, you guys here will give me an unbiased opinion. I use a freeware version of a well-known file erase program. I have used it for years and thought I was safe. However, needing to recover accidentally deleted (not erased) files I used the recovery program from the same company. As well as the deleted files it turned up a whole load (all? I dont know, there were hundreds) of files that I had intentionally erased. including 7-pass and 35-pass erasures. At first my reaction was - "this program does not work as advertised", then "hmm, it it because of the way I am doing it?" When I have files to erase I move them to a temp folder and when convenient run the program. Does this mean that I am somehow creating a copy which stays in some archive or memory and it is these that are being recovered? Another odd thing: Using the file recovery tool I have "recovered" files that were never even deleted - but they were opened in grafix programs and altered, but NEVER deleted. Do these programs create their own library of used files and then "delete" them when the program or the pc is shut down? If I overwrite empty drive space with any old rubbish will that "sanitize" the drive? Thank you.

Isn't there a way to recover files that have been deleted from your internet history? I know they don't go to the recycle bin. I'm needing to snoop on my husband. I think he's looking at things he shouldn't. (I don't need or want opinions on what he should/shouldn't look at, or whether I should be snooping.) We each have laptops. I can't install a filtering software w/o his knowing it. I will do this later, but first want to hack his laptop a little bit.

Thanks!

A:Recover Deleted Windows 7 Recovery Files from Recovery Drive

You might be able to use a free recovery tool like Recuva or MiniTool Partition Wizard. But there are no guarantees that all deleted files will be recovered or that they will be in a usable condition.

It may be safer to contact HP support and buy a set of recovery disks for your particular machine. I'm taking a guess that you are in India?

Hello Steve, welcome to Seven Forums.

I would try reinstalling, just in case you did not actually remove the pst file.

I was installing a fresh copy of Windows, when I wasnt paying attention and accidentally deleted the wrong partition(which was my full 80g hard drive that has everything on it!!). Luckily, I noticed what I had done BEFORE I formatted it. So now the partition is an unpartitioned 80g, and I installed a fresh copy of xp on the RIGHT hard drive i meant to install it on in the first place! Can anyone help me? That hard drive is very important to me, and I know there has to be a way to get it back. For right now I am leaving the unpartitioned drive alone until I get some feedback. So if anyone can help, suggest a EASY to use program, or give any support, IT WOULD BE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED! Thankyou very much!

Hi,

I'm new to using robocopy but I have used it for awhile with a couple of external drives to keep them in sync but using a simple command like:

robocopy g: f: /E /R:2

this copies everything from the g: drive to the f: drive including empty directories and tries 2 times for failures.

On my desktop which is a XP Pro machine as well, I've installed the Windows Resource Kit Tool which includes robocopy and am trying to do a similar thing to copy my "My Documents" directory on my c: drive to my k: drive which is an external drive on my mionet network. The copy does work fine but each time I run the robocopy command, a large number of the files get copied even though they haven't changed. I'm sure that I'm just missing something but I've tried adding things to the command line to not copy older files. Here's something that I have tried:

robocopy "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents" "K:\ImageThat\My Documents" /E /R:2 /XO /A-:A

each time that I execute this command, I get about 800 files that get copied and I don't understand why. Anyone see anything that I'm missing, or perhaps the way that I am understanding how robocopy works is the problem.

thanks in advance!
Bill

The default copy switch of robocopy is /COPYAT if you don't specify any copy options. This is the code I'm using:

robocopy C:\ D:\Backup RAMDisk.img /copyall /R:5 /W:15 /V /log:\Users\Kevin\Desktop\robocopy_log.txt

The RAMDisk.img file that I'm copying is a compressed image file. Now with that syntax /COPYAT will be used which means that it will copy all attributes of that file. Whenever I run this, I successfully copy the file but it doesn't retain the compression attribute of that file.

What could be wrong with this? Both source and destination are NTFS-formatted.

A:Backing up files using Robocopy

Although compression is indicated via a file's attributes, I'm not sure if that particular property actually transfers with the copy, even with Robocopy. If you copy to a compressed folder (folder and contents) then I would think the copy would be compressed. And if that folder is not compreesed, files that are placed there will be uncompressed (even if you are copying a compressed file to that location).

Hi, I just started using Robocopy to backup my files to my JBOD recently and I noticed that it does not copy anything in My Document folder. Here is the result log for Robocopy regarding the backup.

Even though it says that it copied 22831 files the destination folder says it has not been modified at all.

The strange thing is that when I was checking back on the progress in the cmd window, it showed that it was copying files. The problem is I have no idea where those files went, the files that were supposedly copied aren't there at all. Here is the script I used to back up my files.

I'm using robocopy (ver XP010) on a Windows XP laptop to copy user files to another drive for backup.

robocopy "c:\my documents" "Z:\myname\my documents" /XO /M /ZB /E /MIR /log:c:mylog.txt /TEE

It creates all of the directories and subdirectories but doesn't copy any of the files. The log shows no errors - total dirs 162 copies 162, total files 1458 skipped 1458.

To minimize variables I tried using a new usb external NTFS hard drive (Z) but it still skips all of the files. I've verified the permissions and owership of the files and everthing seems in order. The problem is limited to this computer, the other computers in the group are OK. Any suggestions?

I just found out that 2 of the 6 computers in this group fail so I will be compairing files and permissions etc. to see what the two failed ones have in common against the working ones.

hi,

I have a standard Windows 10 build and I'm using robocopy to backup my data to an external drive. The goal is just to capture all my data so if the PC fails/gets stolen etc. I can restore my data on to another PC.

I'm doing a backup of c:\users\ as this seems to capture all my data. Are there any other folders you think I should backup?

I've excluded the 'AppData' folder as this seems to have a lot of stuff which is not data. Is that OK or do you think that should be backed up? Are there any other folders you think I should skip?

Thank you very much for your comments.

Our Windows 7 backup machine uses robocopy to differentially refresh a file server backup each evening. Unfortunately, users use Microsoft Outlook with PST files, which are locked by Outlook. I often noticed that when users had not closed Outlook by the
time the backup reached their PST file, robocopy failed to update the file.
I thought that was a non-issue since such cases only happen to about 2 users each day, but I had the surprise to discover that when robocopy fails to update, it deletes the outdated files (/MIR implies /purge).
Do others get the same result? If so, can this be avoided? I did not find any option to ignore locked files in the documentation. I suppose this would not happen without /purge, but /purge is somewhat necessary (a simple directory rename could otherwise
largely inflate space usage).

Hi all
I have just found Robocopy and it seems the perfect tool for what I am trying to do....
I make an incremental Backup on one of my PC's (Called Server-PC) every day using AOMEI backupper and I want to mirror that folder on my main PC I have been fiddling with Robocopy for hours now have Googled everything I can think of and can't find out what I am doing wrong.

First of all I Mapped my E:\ drive on My Main PC onto my Server-PC and called it Z:
Using this script --- robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "Z\ServerDriveCopy" /R:5 /s /purge /COPYALL as a test I Get
Source : D:AOMEI\
Destination : C:\Users\mike\Desktop\Z\ServerDriveCopy\

It starts and then says "There is not enough space on the disk" There is still 700gb empty on the disk! I have checked if Quota's have been enabled and they haven't so can't work this out!

I just found out there is a GUI for Robocopy so I tried that and made a slightly different script:
robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "Z:\ServerDriveCopy" /MIR /S /V /NP /Z /R:10 /W:30 (The only difference is the colon after Z !
and that goes MAD keeps repeating in the cmd window forever but no error message and no files get copied.

So I tried it without using the mapped drive which gives me :
robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "\\Main\e\ServerDriveCopy"
and that says "Access Denied" !
I can drag and drop files in explorer OK so I am stumped.

If any one can help I would be very grateful
Mike

Hi, we are migrating a very large amount of data and we are using robocopy. Everything seems to work fine but now we find  thousands of files having the time stamp reset to 1-1-1980.
After many many tests we now sure the the /B switch is causing this issue (in our case).

But we MUST use the /B switch. Otherwise we will have big problems with access denied errors. to user data.
Now my question is how to solve this issue and keep using the /B switch.
The cmd line we are using is:
robocopy "%source%" "%target%" /MIR /NODCOPY /COPY:DAT /DCOPY:T /r:0 /w:0 /mt:32 /tee /v /fft /np /TIMFIX /xa:sh /xd $RECYCLE.BIN /log+:x:\mylogs\copylog.log

Started using robocopy to do my backups. In my command lines, i can specify directories on a external drive to backup to.Some directories show up and i see everything. My most important directory " my documents" DOESNT SHOW UP. I have confirmed a backup is occuring, via log file and properties on the backup folder. I edited it down to a backup of only that folder. Log file shows good, external drive shows the "backup" root directory and properties ( size, number of files) match log file. Open up the backup folder, NOTHING LISTED. I have to run the script as adminstrator , my user is admin also, but if i run it as myself, it cant access the folder. I think im dealing with a right issue, i have edited security on the external drive, even reformatted it , still nothing shows up.

Last week I used a robocopy tutorial on this site to create a backup script, and it was working fine. Today I tried to run this script, inputting new destination information but leaving everything else the same, and now it is copying all of the folders, but none of the files.

It counts a total of 509 Dirs but 0 files--no skipped, no mismatch, no failed.

My syntax/options are as follows:
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" /E /tee /log.Public_backup log.txt
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" /E /tee /log.Training_backup log.txt
pause

Does anyone see what might be causing this problem or have suggestions?

The source folder is directory:\folder and the destination folder is directory:\folder\subfolder\subfolder, if that matters.

A:Issue with Robocopy only copying folders, not files, in Windows 7

It should default to all files (*.*), but you could put the *.* in the command to see if it makes a difference.
i.e.
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" *.* /E /tee /log.Public_backup log.txt

If that doesn't work can you post the actual commands you are using, with the real folder names ?

Hi all, a while ago I had the idea to start from scratch to clean up the system and gain more performance. But I have not done yet because I have some doubts.

On the PC I have Acronis True Image Home 2011
--> In the part where it says My backups I see the image that I have saved.
--> When I click on "Explore and recover" :To the right I see 2 items to recover: "Reserved for System and Local Disk (C)"
Therefore, the partition (D)will remain intact. Right ? But if I want to restore everything, both partitions, i have to use the option "Files and folders" ?

Extra info : I did not create the image, other person is who created it :P

A:Difference between recover partitions or recover files and folders.

How long ago was that Acronis image made?

I guess I don't understand your intent. You talk about starting over to clean up and gain more performance, but then express interest in restoring "everything".

Was that image made at a time when your system was running perfectly? How has your system changed since that date? If you restore, you will have to reinstall any applications you've acquired since the image was made. And that image won't contain any personal data acquired since it was made. Maybe it contains no personal data at all?
If you are going to "start from scratch", I assume you mean you want to do a clean install of Windows.

If you were to do that, the only thing in that image file that might possibly be important to you would be personal files---pictures, videos, mp3s, Word documents, browser bookmarks, possibly email, etc. And that would be personal files as of the date of that image, not your current personal files. And not Windows itself.

If I wanted to "start over", I would:

1: back up all current personal files to some other drive, probably external. I would NOT use an image for this. I'd just copy them with the mouse.

2: reinstall Windows.

If I did those 2 things, the contents of the Acronis image would be irrelevant.

You should forget about Acronis if you don't understand it or know whats in any images you have. Particularly if you didn't make the image yourself. Images can fail you anyway. I'd never rely on them exclusi... Read more

I want to copy the contents of pen drive to E drive. The pendrive drive is F. Now i want all the folders and files to have the same date it was as in the pen drive, when i stored .
Normally when i copy, all the files retain original date but folders get todate. Meaning less if date specific creation of folder is needed.
I heard that robocopy feature in command would give me a way to it. Reading in microsoft or in other forums, including in this forum would not solve my problem. as it is total technical in nature of using switches in command.
My specific need is date of the folders and folder in the pendrive F to be copied to E: in one new folder, say Eendrive copy .
Dcopy is one of the sub command. I want total command for this . There may be experts in this commands. Please let me know , how to accomplish this. I have inadvertantly deleted a personal file (containing data and pictures files) from my laptop.I tried to use recovery programs to recover at least the pictures. I have recovered some of the files containing the pictures, but cannot open these pictures . When trying to open each picture (of the recovered ones) I've got the following note:"Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, ot its format is not currently supported"I checked the System Restore and found that a restore point is available to the date prior the delete. Can System Restore recover the deleted file?Note: The file was installed on the Desktop (before being deleted).I am using Windows XP ProThanks for your assitance.

A:Recover A Deleted File

The restore point may work for you, or it may not. Persoanlly, that's a tough call, because you risk erasing the deleted version where you can't retrieve it, and you risk the possibility that the restore point won't work, and at the same time, erased any possible chance of you recovering what was accidentally deleted. If possible, the best way you is to hook the hard drive in question to another computer as the slave. And then use the other computer to get the data off, because you stand the risk of that sector of the hard drive to be over-written with data if you add/install a program to the computer. It's not always true.. but that risk still exists. If you don't have access to another computer then you'll want to use a few FREE ones that are out there. Look in the Commercial FREEWare forum here on this site. Sorry, I forget the link right off hand. But whatever you do, don't keep deleting and (or) modifying the hard drive if you want your data back. By all means, just download what you need, and do as less installing/deleting on that computer as possible. And then again, if you feel that the Restore Point will bring back the data, then all I can say is go for it. But remember to weigh out your odds, no matter which route you take.a. connect the hard drive to another computer, and do it that way (safest known method)b. install a program(s) on the computer in question, and run it from there (risk/a workable method)c. Use the Windows Restore Point (ris... Read more
