Backing Up Windows, general noob question.

Q: Backing Up Windows, general noob question.

I'd like to get a layman's answer to a question that has bugged me for too long: Why can't I backup my hard drive by simply cloning its contents?

I don't mean doing an exact "hard disk clone" including multiple partitions, MBR, etc., although maybe that in-and-of-itself is part of the answer, but I get frustrated trying to understand why Windows won't allow itself to simply be copied -- activation concerns aside. On my Mac or my Linux machines, I can literally do a rsync or cp or whatever I want to do and have the entire disk copied over to an external, a thumb drive, a secondary internal disc, etc., and can then boot off of that disk. There's no additional configuration, aside from first formatting the disk (if needed) to whatever file system the OS needs.

Is it because Windows relies in the MBR in a different way? Is it because of activation / security concerns? Am I wrong in my question in the first place?

A: Backing Up Windows, general noob question.

I'm not certain why a simply copy/paste doesn't work but I'm guessing it has something do do with hidden files/partitions/properties/mbr/etc.

Regardless of why a straight copy and paste doesn't work there are a few methods that you can use to "clone" your hard drive. You can use backup software to create a system image. This is basically a clone of your current hard drive's status and it allows you to restore your computer to exactly that point from scratch. You could also use disc management software to clone your hard drive in the manner you're speaking of. I'm not sure if it'll work properly on a boot disc but you could try. Keep in mind that it's best to clone the hard drive using a live cd so that you're not booting off that hard drive at the moment of the clone.

More about backup software...

Personally, I don't recommend using the Windows version of backup software because I've found it's unreliable. However, many people use both third party and Windows versions of backup software and both work. The key is finding a method that is reliable for you.

I use a free program called Macrium Reflect. It's a backup software that allows you to clone any partition and save a copy. You can then use a Linux Boot Disk to restore that image to any hard drive with sufficient space. The one thing you want to make sure of in this configuration is that the boot disk works for you.

For your first test, I recommend backing up all of your information before doing anything. Once you've done this, create a system image and place it on a secondary disk. Now create your Linux Boot Disc. Boot from this disc and attempt to access your system image. If everything works properly and you can access the system image on whatever secondary disc you're using, use that image to restore your hard drive. This shouldn't take too long as long as your primary disc isn't too large. Anyway, if everything works properly then you know you have a reliable backup method. Now you can create system images on a regular basis and keep a base system image from just after you've installed your operating system and drivers.

I highly recommend doing that last part. Once every few months, I revert to my base system image which is simply an image of my hard drive about a day after I installed Windows 7. It's configured the way I want it and has all my basic software/drivers installed. For me, it's the equivalent of formatting my hard drive. Even though most people use this method or something similar to simply backup their boot disc, you can use it to back up any disc you have.

Anyone know if it's possible to back up the Windows Media Player database?

Recently I lost much of the information mysteriously with no obvious way to retrieve it. I have a lot of music from LPs and such and it will not automatically recognize this music. I'd feel a lot better, with hundreds of albums, if this was backed up if that's possible.

I used to reinstall my O/S (win xp) about every 6 months. It was quicker than hacking through viruses and cpu clutter, but now I have 15-20 app's which I actively use for development. The pc is exactly how I want it (application wise) and reinstalling all this could take hours. I haven't used image tools before so I could use some advice on what kind of backup it creates.

In other words, if I use a tool like Ghost to create a backup to an external drive, can I, at anytime, wipe the master drive clean and get back to where I'm at now, with all the apps installed and ready to go? .. or does it do just an O/S copy? Also, will this enable me to deploy the same image to additional pc's??

Thanks for any insight..

Good day everybody ...

First of all I have low knowledge of computers...

My enquiry question is :

Where can I find my product code for Windows 7 ?

The reason is that I bought this laptop 1 year ago, and I've did a scan and it seems I have a lot of problems with the registries... so I am considering to do a Windows Repair.

I did a back to all my files and everything but...
My problem with this is that I don't have a disk with Windows 7, as when I bought the laptop it didn't come up with a disk, it was just saved on my computer... it is the genuine Windows for sure as it says when I activated...

So, can anyone offer any advice on how I could tackle this ?

Another problem is that I'm not sure what sort of drivers I should install after repairing the windows and where could I find them ? i.e. sound drivers / graphic drivers etc .

Will I have to find these before I do the Windows install repair? Or will the Windows automatically find them for me?

Thank you so much for your time -- look forward for your replies.

I am currently running windows 7 Ultimate on a versin activated by "extreme loader".It was worked fine for a few years but my new antivirus GDATA determined it was a threat and before I realised what had happened, did something to it.Cannot find log of what.Point is it now appears on the list of windows versions I have to boot listed as extreme loader. If I load it I get the "cannot find Xeldy" message repeating over and over.
I have now ordered a copy of windows 8 which |I ran a compatability guide for and found acceptable.
Now I seem to remember getting "ticked-of" by someone on this forum before for asking about extrreme loader. If that is still the situation forget the question.
What I do wonder is why the price of windows fluctuates so greatly on mail order companise.I know windows from Microsoft is $289 so how is it that many companies offer it on-line for $50-$100?They claim these are new sealed copies etc and of course because it sold under e-bay's "umbrella" does cover you if there is an issue.Still, if they are ligtamte copies, why the vast price difference.

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. My PC is 5 years old.

This is what I have done so far. I wanted your suggestions on how to continue.

So I bought a new hard disk and loaded Win 7. Then I downloaded all the patches and such. My PC frozen and unusable. Not even the mose worked. The only option left was pulling the cord. It was that bad. So then I tried again. Wiped the hard disk clean. Loaded Win 7. This time I did not download the latest patches. My PC worked for several days. Then one day when I turned off the PC, I saw a message on the screen that said "Don't shut off the PC, downloading patches." Then the following day when I started my computer, again. Same problem. My PC was froozen and unusable. Nothing worked. I couldn't get to tash manager. So I pulled the plug. Again.

I don't know how to proceed. At this moment, I feel like giving up on Win 7. It seems that if get the latest patches my PC will die. But if I don't patch my PC, then malware will get in. The reaon I wanted Win 7 was to protect myself from malware. But a fully pached Win 7 kills my PC. At this point I feel like Win 7 is not for me. So I considered going back to XP.

Opinoins wanted. So what do you all think. I am not sure how to continue. At this point I feel like screw it back to XP.

A:General question on how to continue with Windows 7

what patches are you referring to ,I have installed win7 maybe a 100 times or more on different computer and have never install patches ,just drivers and software ,so when you install win7 are you doing it from a dvdd or from a oem recovery partition on the computers harddrive

I've reinstalled Windows-- wiped the drive, started from scratch. Things went swimmingly until I got to the 149 important updates! I had automagic updating turned on, but it hung up for 24 hours, and I got an unknown error . I went in and cleared the attempted update using this temp.bat:
net stop wuauserv
net stop Cryptsvc
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution sdold.old
ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 crt2old.old
net start wuauserv
net start Cryptsvc

which worked.

In order to not get stuck in an endless cycle of not updating, I decided to update manually (it's my day off. ) Is there a specific order in which I should update? I thought they'd be on this list chronologically, but that would make sense.

Thank you,

hi im planning on upgrading my guest computers ram. currently the specs are:
1.3ghz AMD
128mb pc 133 sdram
250 watt psu
120 gb HD
128MB Nvidia

i was wondering if ddr means double data rate. then does that mean 1 512mb ddr ram. is about the same thing as 2 512mb pc133 sdrams? the most my guest computer can take is 1.5gb of pc133 sdram. im wondering if i need all 1.5gb or if i only need 1gb. i dont want only 512mb in it. my cpu is the most the board can handle. and i was wondering if my 250watt psu should be fine running the newer setup. with either 2 or 3 512mb sdrams.thanks..

A:noob question about ram...

PC133 RAM is not the same as DDR. DDR RAM is double data rate, 184- or 240-pin; PC133 is single data rate, 168-pin. 1GB of PC133 should be enough, and you can't put DDR RAM in your PC133 system. I'd say your power supply should be able to handle it when it's upgraded if it can now, cuz I dont think RAM takes that much power.

EDIT: sorry, I misunderstood your thread. Good luck w/upgrading your RAM.

Well, I just looked at a few photos of the case you got, and while it doesn't look like there are any spots made for an extra fan, I bet with a little work, you could add one to the left side-panel(facing the case), in the center or a little towards the back. Thats where I would put one if I wanted to add an extra fan. That or maybe the top, but that might be a little harder with the stealth panel being there...

hey guys,

Its my my first question so plz be nice

what exactly is meant (Automated Operating system image deployment to desktops)?

or just operating system image

A:Noob Question!

Do I really have to be nice? (just kidding!)

An "image" is commonly said to be an exact copy of a hard drive - both the contents and the location of the contents (so it can be bootable).

Automated Operating system image deployment to desktops - in a business, this automated process is used to transfer the "image" of the operating system and programs to many desktops. This makes things faster for the IT department, and it standardizes what's available to the user when the system first boots up.

An operating system image is simply an image of a disk that contains an operating system.

Nope. First it is UDP, not tcpip. Second the destination IP. Third the amount of date transmitted.

As long as you have a firewall and AV you dont need to be worried about this one.

I also have 2 sticks of OCZ platinum PC-6400 that runs 800 Mhz.

I realize it will not run higher if I don't change the stock Ram.

MY question is will my pc run faster with 4 gigs at 667 or 2 gigs at 800 Mhz ??

Second question will there be a noticable difference if I ran 4 gig at 800 Mhz ?? Versus 4 gig at 667

I also wanna know other stuff like overclocking and how to get into the menu to set to EPP . Anyone feel free to help me. I can access BIOS but cannot find anything to change for overclocking or EPP.

A:noob here Ram question

the ram will only run at the max supported by the motherboard, so if 667 is the max, then if you plug the 800 in, the memory will still only run at 667.
you have one of these Systems Your system has 667 where some of the other models are 800, with a maximum 4 gb supported.

Bottom line your system will run much quicker by upgrading your RAM, I really don't advise overclocking your PC...I think that is over rated, and you can damage your system.

The card will work just fine for you. Don't worry about that distinction.

I believe it has to do with how the card's GPU sends information to the graphics memory. It can use 64-bit strings, rather than 32-bit. It ends up being a similar distinction, but there's no issue. Just like a 64-bit processor can run a 32-bit OS, 64-bit stings can handle 32-bit.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I just need a quick answer before I go home.

For the life of me I can't find the place to change the security key for my network.

I have windows 7 and a linksys router (got someone from Geeksquad to install it, so don't know too much about it). I just wanted to change the security key on my main desktop computer, so all my passwords on my laptop (sign in/connect to internet, etc) are the same.

So how/where do i go to change my security key? I tried looking through the control panel, but no luck. (no patience is more like it )

Thanks for any help

A:Quick noob question

Usually the security key is first setup in the router's control panel. You need to know the IP or default gateway of your router for this, usually in the US it's or typed into the URL of your browser.

It can also be changed or adjusted in Windows 7 by going to the Network and Sharing Center, then look to the collum on the left and choose "Manage Wireless Networks" Once there you can choose a wireless network, click on it then you can use the Security tab and edit the security settings like in the picture below. Hope this helps.

OK I have HP Pavilion a1700n, I upgraded my video card, running dual hds, getting ready to update power supply, running 4g ram, want to upgrade my processor, current processor is

AMD Athlon? 64 x2 Dual Processor 3800+ 2.00 GHz

what can I upgrade to and what do I need to know to make my choice, this NOOB will apprecaite the help, thanks!

A:Noob with processor question

Okay, assuming your motherboard is socket AM2 and only supports AM2 here are a few options.

5200+ 2.7Ghz 65nm 512kb X 2 L2Cache GOOD

5600+ 2.9Ghz 65nm 512kb X 2 L2Cache BETTER

6000+ 3.0Ghz 90nm 1mb X 2 L2Cache BEST

Now there are more options if your motherboard supports AM2+. Check with CPU-Z

Now the problem is when playing medal of honor it gets extremely choppy, i turn down everything in the game and it doesnt change much. Turned down the effects on the 9700 and still nothing.
Weird thing is when i check the "Easy Info" under requirements it says i pass everything except Cpu speed. It says -1892????
Also under the systems tab in the easy info it says i have 512mb but only 274 free??
Last but certainly not least under the display tab its says that i have 1mb of video memory under display 1. And 128 under display 2???
The only thing that im running thats integrated on the board is the lan card and the usb ports??

Im a dual core newb, so Pretty simple question, basically what i want to know is: on Dual core processors is the clock speed the TOTAL between both processors, or is the total clock speed split in half between processors.

for example,

if i had a dualcore 2.8ghz CPU

would it be 2.8ghz for each processor

or would each processor be 1.4ghz?

I hope ive put the question forward clearley,

Thanks guys

A:dualcore noob question

first of all, we're talking about dual CORES. The thing you seem to mention is dual processors. (dual core=2 cores on the same processor)But I assume you mean the speed per core. As far as I know, if a dual core processor has 2mb cache, 1mb goes to each core. Also, if a dual core processor has 2,8 Ghz, this 'speed' is shared between the cores. Which basically means it's split.
I have to admit I'm not an expert on dual cores, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hey all,

I currently run decent Corsair Dominator 1600 Mhz RAM: 8 GB that has XMP profile latency of 8-9-8-24. Runs 1.5V

I was wondering about a minor upgrade to 2400Mhz 16 GB (just because I can ...) BUT I don't understand the latency thing.

If you take a reasonably high end RAM such as CORSAIR Vengeance PRO 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 2400MHz Desktop Gaming Memory , which is in stock with my local supplier, it has a latency of 10-12-12-31. Surely that means it is SLOWER than the 8GB kit? Also, is it less preferable if it runs at 1.65V or is that normal for 2400Mhz Ram like this?

A:Memory question, perhaps a bit noob :-)

Obviously, the more RAM you have is always better; however, the lower the timing the faster it will be. If you intend to purchase that Corsair package for gaming, you most likely will be overclocking it. That's why the timings are higher; cause it doesn't always matter since most people overclock their systems for gaming.

I tried Ubuntu and Kubuntu for a while to see if it was all it's cracked up to be. It certainly was:approve: , but I didn't find the available software useful to me.

I have XP on a 40GB HD, and an 80GB HD partitioned roughly in half and each partition has a Linux installation on it. And none of the OS's can "see" the others (i.e. where they are on the HD's)

I could just format the 80GB, but I'm worried the BIOS will still think Linux is there and screw the whole computer up permanently (plus I don't really know how ).

Any tips?

And just curious:
The two Linux distributions have somehow increased to eight :suspiciou (four of each). Was that supposed to happen?

A:Ubuntu isn't for me; How do I get rid of it? (noob question)

what you are going to want to do is boot into windows, and remove the partition with the windows disk manager. You can get there by right clicking on My Computer, and selecting the Manage button. Go to the Disk Management tool, and remove the partition. You also need to run the fixmbr and fixboot commands to get rid of GRUB, the boot loader for linux. You would need to boot to the Recovery Console to do that (If you have your Windows XP CD, pop it in, make sure you boot to that, and select to go to the Recovery Console).

Your best chance to do that is to change your windows theme. It would probably turn it grey.

Your other option would be to re-skin the interface. Google is your freind. There is also a program called windowblinds which may do what you want. Let us know.

Ok, I am very sorry about only posting problems here but i need some help. Its been the same problem for awhile. The first is the graphics being very... i dont know how to put it maybe pixely and looking fuzzy and not rounded off in game movies. There is also some gameplay lag i get in games. 2nd problem is that games freeze after a period of time and I mean every game. I tested them all and if one works then the other freezes after awhile... i had one freeze in the begging of Kohan 2's in game movie. My other problem, i dont know if anyone has had the same, is my windows hanging in the windows startup with the blue bar just goin across for about two mintues then loads up into windows. My specs are in the profile.... any suggestions on this? I narrowed it down to be either the power supply or the graphics card and mother board. I have an Antec True Power V2 550W.

If this is so I was goin to drop in my rig an Radeon X1800 XT 512mb, Enermax 620watt powersupply and maybe change the mother board. Need help because its too frustrating. This is my first built and everything is connected correctly, drivers all updated, flased bios. Dont know what temp its running at... dont know how to check that. Any help would be appreciated, if not then its understandable.

A:A frustrating noob question...

Sounds like an overheating issue. You may want to buy a can of electronics cleaner (compressed air) and blow all the dust out of your PC. (even if this isn't your main issue, its still a good idea). You may also want to check that all your fans are working properly by powering up the computer with the side off and watching the fans spin. (can be entertaining if you're easily amused like I am when I'm tired)

The symptoms also sound like a possilbly failing video card.

Edit: Also check your event viewer for suspicious occurances. If everything there is clean, then I'd definitely check for overheating.

So I tried going to when I got a message saying "privacy error your connection is not private" like this:
Well when I googled it I got that video
Well one of the top comments said to type "danger" and it would fix it. I figured it's best not to ignore messages like the one I was getting, but thought this is probably just this website messing up and I have no personal information on this account that could get stolen. Well after doing that (typing danger) the website still didn't work but I got a different message(it wasn't anything weird, just a thing with the site logo saying it didn't work). Then I read further in the comments about someone apparently getting a virus. So I x'd out and was gonna scan but then I realized, by pressing "danger" did I disable some security feature? And if so how do I turn it back on? Should I change passwords on that account just because?
My computer is also being unusually slow right now, though I'm not sure if that's related.

A:Real noob question

Where were you trying to access this site from ?  I have seen messages like this appear when using public wi-fi systems since Chrome and Firefox have got much more security conscious in the last year or two. I help with a group teaching mainly older people how to use their laptops and tablets better and two of our weekly sessions are held in a location using an open wi-fi system which is when I have seen this type of message.
Since I believe in living dangerously I went to the web-site in your image and they use 'HTTPS'. I seem to remember reading recently that Google are trying to get everything on to this standard rather than 'HTTP' but it only takes one link in the chain or one advert on a site using 'HTTP' to bring the security level down from secure to ordinary and I believe Chrome reacts to that. Certainly using up to date Firefox from my own computer at home I got no warnings going to this site.
If you are concerned about any penetration onto your computer I suggest you download Malwarebytes - a free download - from BC, you can get it here :-
Download, install and then run it. The first thing it will do is update the data files then run a 'quick' scan with it, normally a 'quick' scan is all you need. If it reports any problems it cannot deal with itself then raise a topic in the 'Am I infected ?' section of BC.

How come alot of motherboards only have one IDE connection now? What if you run 2 hard drives and 2 cd roms?

And what about SATA and RAID?

Once again, sorry for the noob questions.

A:noob question, please be nice...

I haven't come across many motherboards with only ONE IDE socket. But if there are on the modern ones, it's becaus SATA & SATA II are becoming more and more widespread in Optical (DVD, CD) Drives and Hard Disks (especially hard disks).

Not only are SATA cables easier to plug in (no pins to bend, smaller plugs) but they also a lot more compact (improves air circulation inside the case), but offer much higer transfer speeds (read and write) than IDE: 150Mb/s and 300Mb/s (theoreticaly) for SATA I & SATA II respectively compared to around 50Mb/s for IDE.

RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independant Disks. Basicaly it's setting up two or more hard disks in certain "Arrays" or configurations to improve speed or secure data.
RAID is broken down into RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5 and RAID 10...(there are more). The most common are 0 and 1. I myself use RAID 0. Here's what the two most common arrays do:

RAID 0: set up two identical (same size, speed, preferably brand, access time etc.) drives to forme one large drive of the size of the two put together. Half the data is written on one disk, half on the other. This should cut down writting and reading time by two (it's not actually by that much but still fast!).
Inconvenience: If one disk fails, you have lost everything. If you want to take your hard disk to a friends place and put it in his computer, you can't.

RAID 1: Again, two identical drives. All of the date will be written to both d... Read more

Welcome to the forum!

No. Dedicated GPUs in laptops are mostly soldered to the motherboard these days. If your model didn't come with a dedicated GPU besides the Intel graphics then you are out of luck.

That said, the Intel graphics on that CPU should handle most games although not at highest settings.

Im new here so sorry if this is a stupid question. My cpu cooling fan is making a ton of noise...enough to wake me up at night. So I bought a new one. Its a Pentium 4 and I got a 478 socket fan. Is that the right kind to get? Also, should I install this myself? I've installed a new power supply and various PCI cards on my own...but this seems a little harder and riskier.....thanks for your help.

A:Noob question...installing a cooling fan...

cpu cooler

Your cooler may or may not be right. Pentium 4's have been made in sockets 423, 478, and 775. So if yours is socket 478, then it should work. It shouldn't be too hard to install. Make sure you use thermal paste or a thermal pad between processor and heatsink. It depends on your motherboard design and your cooler's design as to how hard it will be to install. Some combinations are very simple, while others are a little trickier.

I'm new to the site (was here last week to follow advice on getting the Bad Image Virus off my PC - Finally got it ! - Thanks a million) and am trying to learn as much as I can about these things.  I'm still not quite sure about the way they launch.
Is the following statement true:
Once my computer gets a virus and I disconnect from all external storage/networks and reboot my PC (in Safe mode probably) the ONLY way a virus can re-launch is from a registry entry or malware in my MBR?
Thanks for such a helpful website in advance.

A:nOOb question on virus execution

Majority of viruses have registry entry and corresponding file that runs when your system boot up. Your question is little confusing, but I will try to answer you.
Viruses spread across internet/network, removable drives and so on. Once when you infect with the dropper it will try to contact C&C server and to download more malware, this can vary from malware to malware, some of them have one or two components, and some of them several.
Yes, your statement is right. Simple malware has HKLM\...\Run or HKCU\...\Run entry and corresponding file/s that starts when your system boot up.
More advanced malware installs service or driver/module and purpose of service/driver is to protect executable malicious file from deleting.
The most severe malware makes hidden partition or drivers/modules that block installing any other service or driver.
Hope you understood, if you have more questions, feel free to ask...

I run Firefox latest version.

Is there a shortcut to get to any of the completion steps
before using HJT?

I ran HJT just out of curiosity but the rules say an HJT log
will not be inspected unless these other step are done.

The short form is: What Firefox users do?

While I have little malware problem, I'm having a vsmon
error pop up from time to time and that is the reason for this question.

A:Noob question on the 5 step process

You have two options

1. Run this Firefox compatible scan:
Go to Trend Micro Housecall Europe. This online scanner supports most browsers and operating systems.

2. Open IE and run one of the listed scans. Be aware that after posting your log you may be asked to run one or more of these IE based scanners anyway as they help us detect files we cannot see in your log.

After you finish the process go ahead and post your log in this thread and we'll get you cleaned up.

First off, I'd like to begin by informing you that I'm not some noob that comes to these forums expecting to be spoonfed information without at least TRYING to fix it myself.  I do know basic troubleshooting steps, and I've tried everything I'm aware of before coming here.
Here's my computer specs:
AMD A10 7900K Quad Core APU @ 3.9GHz w/ integrated ATI Radeon R7 graphics adapter
16GB G-Skill Ares PC3-19200 DDR3 RAM
Biostar A58MD Motherboard
Seagate 500GB hard drive (Sorry, don't know the model)
Integrated sound card (probably Realtek?  All I know is that it's junk compared to what you can get from Creative, LOL!)
That said, the problem I'm having with my computer is very simple:  It won't turn on.  Nothing happens when I push the Power button.  The problem started when I was playing Path of Exile last night.  All of a sudden, my PC would shut down, so I turned it back on.  It would stay on, but only for a couple seconds.  Not wanting to push the system any further, I left it alone for a couple days.
Now it should be noted that I started off using the dinky old 450w power supply that came with my old computer.  (It was an old Pentium D from back in 2003.  Yeah, I know, that was a BIG mistake using such an underpowered PSU, I should've known better, blablabla, but it was the only thing I had, and it worked - all that happened was I would get occasional BSODs, probably from the PSU being so weak.) ... So I have a HP Pavilion a705w, I KNOW I KNOW. Before all the crap comes, I know it is a POS. But I would still like to put a graphics card in it. I had a Nvidia Geforce 6200 from like 3 years ago, still Brand new in the box. I know the card is not worthy of game play nor is the computer. But for a simple game like Counter Strke 1.6, even using the onboard graphics chip I was getting around 40fps. I figure with a decent card that the mother board will support I should get to 100FPS. ( HOPEFULLY)

So my question is to you, if you had this comp, and wanted better game play, WHAT CARD WOULD YOU USE that the mobo would support?
Thanks in advance - Jay

Edit- Comp stats are stock other than 2gb of RAM.

Oh and would I have to get a bigger power supply? If so what Voltage would be needed?

A:Serious NOOB question - Graphics Card on POS

The specs for the motherboard in your machine are on but it does not tell you what AGP slot standard it is.
Look up agp slots and find out what one you have (bars across the slot will tell you) and then see what is available. Choice will be limited.
I doubt you will need to upgrade the PSU

\\myserver\myshare\Folder1\File3.avi -> N:\1047483660\File3.avi
I want it to make the same folder structure on the destination path instead of dumping all the files into the 'root'

\\myserver\myshare\Folder1\File3.avi -> N:\1047483660\Folder1\File3.avi

I hope that makes sense, sorry, it's been a Loooooooooooooooooooong day lol!

i am not sure about overclocking, i know nothing about it or what the consiquences will be so i am asking if my pc would start smoking or what but before i say my pc specs i am gonna say that i play on my pc like everyday all day and i havent had a fault and my comp is kinda new. Now i will say my pc specs......

-intel core tm2 Duo processor T6400 (2.0 GHz, 800 MHz FSB,2 MB L2 cache)
-4 GB ram
-NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT turbocache

A:Noob question: what will happen to my PC if I overlclock?

It wont start smoking, well, Ive smoked old athlons, but you wont smoke anything.

But you can damage components, seeing as though this is a laptop what where your ideas for overclocking?

I mean it will produce more heat, and effect battery life. Ive never really delt with oc'ing newer laptops, in my CompTIA+ cert course we oc'd old donated p3 laptops and it wasnt worth the time.

I took a look at the specs of the notebook why do you need to overclock it?

If its just for fun don't you dont need to.

Hey guys,

I always run as Administrator and have UAC enabled on Default, but have a few questions regarding UAC, which I don't fully understand.

1. By using an Administrator account, I assumed that all programs installed would have Administrator privileges and didn't expect UAC prompts, I thought you'd only receive UAC prompts on a standard account. The only way I can understand why UAC prompts would pop up on an Administrator account is that UAC is not only a way for Standard account users to access Administrator privileges but also for Administrator account users to restrict Administrator privileges for programs? Am I Correct?
2. I've noticed that some software I've installed has the UAC shield on (that requires the prompt) and some software does not (and does not require any prompt). I've always kept these settings as is, assuming that Windows knows best and that they should not be changed for security purposes. Is it dangerous to change a program and not allow Administrator privileges? I've noticed Brink had a tutorial where you can disable "Run this program as Administrator".

The reason I ask is that I have a few computer games that when I installed had the UAC shield on them. I thought I'd better keep it as it is, but would it compromise my security by disabling Run program as Administrator so I don't get the prompts?

Appreciate any answers. Thanks.

A:UAC and security question (WARNING: UAC NOOB!)

Hello Templar,

Q1) Basically, administrator user accounts are unelevated accounts that have complete access to the computer and can make any desired changes. Based on your UAC notification settings, administrators may be prompted to provide their password or confirmation before being allowed to open or run anything that requires elevated rights (run as administrator) to do so, and make changes that affect the system or other users.
User Account Type - Change in Windows 8
Only the built-in Administrator account has elevated rights by default, and will not be prompted by UAC to approve any action that requires elevated rights. However, it's not recommended to use this account for everyday usage since everything that runs (ex: malware) while signed in to the account would have unrestricted access to the entire computer.

Q2) Correct. The UAC shield overlay on an icon indicates that it requires elevated rights to open/run, and that you may be prompted by UAC depending on your UAC settings. If the program requires elevated rights to run properly, then setting it not to do so would most likely cause the program to not run properly or at all.

Hope this helps,

Hey everyone,

I have my wired Dell Inspiron 570 PC that I use everyday in one room, and I have an old Dell Dimension 3000 in another room that I would like to be able to use by way of wireless usb adapter.
I have a Linksys E1200 router connected to the 570, and would like to know....

Will the dimension 3000 even be compatible with my router, and if it is which wireless adapter would be compatible with the router and the 3000? I'm willing to spend like $25

A:Wireless question(total noob)

Your router signal will be available to any wireless capable computer. Get a D-Link DWA-131 Nano for your Dell Dimension 3000. It's small (nano), elegant, fast and cheap.

HP Envy 14-2160se. Radeon HD 6630M graphics that is switchable (with the i5's integrated), but I just keep it on fixed mode and switch everything at once when I want. I'm now learning I can't upgrade my graphics card? It's soldered onto the motherboard? I thought that's what the integrated graphics was.. Soldered on. I didn't know my GPU was as well. I can't upgrade this? And I'm being told only very few laptops can have the GPU upgraded. If this is true, why all the simple tutorials about swapping them out? I didn't think this would be an issue.

A:Noob style question: I can't upgrade my GPU?!

The integrated graphics are in the CPU the discrede graphics are a card on the motherboard, usually. That's what you are switching between. On most laptops the CPU and/or the GPU and soldered on. Although I have never tried, I would imagine if the motherboard is built for switchable graphics, you would mess a lot of stuff up by changing them. And most laptops have locked bios, so there is no option there for you to change.

Alright so i'm a fairly advanced computer user (know enough to be dangerous) but not when it comes to graphics cards. I just upgraded the on-board graphics in my Dell Optiplex 745 with a Sapphire ATI x1650 w/512MB (i know its a low-end card, but i'm not a hard-core gamer, so its great for what i need). SO, my question is should i expect its little fan to run whenever the computer is awake? ... because it currently does and while its not that loud/annoying i simply don't know what to expect from a seemingly idle machine. so are there settings for this sort of thing, etc.

Thanks in advance for your help/suggestions!

A:noob to graphics card question

Yeah, that's pretty typical these days. If it gets louder when you start playing a game, you'll know it's working right.

If you take a look in the Catalyst Control Center, you'll see what temperature it's running at (look under the "Overdrive" settings. If your temperature is up in the red, then you should get concerned.

I'm currently running my q9550 to 3.0ghz. Used to be at 4 although a bit unstable. Recently noticed that while idling on desktop with cpu-z and real temp that it fluctuates from 2.11 to 3.ghz. However when i run intel burn test on any stress level my overclock is stable at 3 and i pass every time.
I'd like to know what is happening, whether it is good or bad and how to stop it. Hitting 4ghz stable would be nice bonus.

Also forgot to mention my mulitplier changes as well from 8.5x to 6x

Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency, which can result in decreased average power consumption and decreased average heat production. It can usually be turned off in the BIOS.

Hello all.

As the topic reads, my questions are about public proxies.

First of all, how do I successfully access a proxy? Do I have to type in the IP of the proxy?

Second, after accessing the proxy, how can I tell if I am anonymous?

I would tremendously appreciate anyone's help who has knowledge and experience with this topic.
Thank you,

A:Noob Question About Public Proxies

What browser are you using? I primarily use Firefox, but for both FF and IE you can go into the Options, then connection settings and manually enter the IP of a proxy server. FF also has several extensions that will do things like import a list of proxies from a text file, and then select which proxy to use from within the extension - extension takes care of changing the FF settings. You can also research utilities like Tor and Privoxy, which connect to a public network of proxy servers - you then add an extension to FF to use Tor.Note that this may make your browser use the proxy, but then things like opening streaming media into Windows Media Player may bypass the proxy server unless you configure those separately. To check if you're anon after enabling the proxy, you can go to various sites like or, which will check what your IP appears to be from their point of view.I found to be a good resource for finding out a lot more about proxies. Note that even if they show your IP as something other than your *real* IP, other details about your connection may be leaked by the proxy server. It's not easy to find proxy servers that can actually make you 100% anonymous.

I know this is going to sound so noobish and stupid i really need to find an answer to thi.
I am very new to computersm infact i just got one, but i forget how big my hard drive is, its either 40gb or 80gb, ive looked everywhere in the manual and such for an answer but i couldnt find one.
But here is the thing, i go into my computer ( i have windows xp)
and i promptly see the proper screen swith all the stuff and one heading HARD DISK DRIVES and then it shows, BOOT (C , BACKUP (D) and RECOVERY (E).
On BOOT C it says it holds 39gb on backup D it says 37gb and on recovery E it says like 3gb.
Now, does this mean i only have a 40gb hard drive(BOOT C) and the others are just there for whtever reason, even tho it says BACKUP D can hold 37GB, would it be safe to save stuff in it and put stuff in there?
So far everything is in BOOT C apart from some default files that automaticly are in BACKUP D.

as you can tell im a total noob, and im really not sure if its safe to use BACKUP D and to put/install stuff in there, so if anybody could give me some help i would really apeciate it?

i just bought this computer from my friend, link:

as you can see, under the "add in" card slots, it says this:
One PCI Express 16 (graphics interface)
One PCI Express 1
Two PCI conventional

and like i said, this is a noob question, that means i have a PCI express slot, right? well how do i tell if its PCI Express 2.0? i just need to make sure im buying the right type of graphics card today.

which leads me to my next question,
i play Counter-strike source, i want to increase FPS, now, im running off of 2gb of ram, so my ram is decent enough, but the integrated graphics card is barely good enough to play games, which is expected since its integrated, and i was wondering if i could get some help as to what kind of graphics card i should get to run games like Counter-strike source smoothely?
the catch is, i have a budget. a 50 dollar budget.
so i was wondering if its even possible to find a decent enough PCI express card for 50$ or under that would make playing CS:S smoother? i heard that even a 256mb graphics card would make all the difference, im trying to shoot for a 512, and heres the website im using for shopping, since there is a CompUSA store near my house:|c:1558|&Sort=4
edit: also, im running off of an old VGA monitor, and i have no VGA/DMI adapter, if it makes a difference.

A:noob question, recommended graphics card?

The graphics cards come with an DVI-VGA adapter. Here's about the best deal from CompUSA: or if you don't want to struggle with rebates:
These cards would eat those cards for breakfast: or
The real problem is not your 50 $ budget, it's the low quality power supply the Gateway comes with. None of these cards are actually supposed to work in the system. Its power supply is a low quality unit, with just about enough power for the original parts.

I do VERY simple websites for friends and have run into a problem setting password access (.htaccess/.htpasswd) on a godaddy-hosted (linux) website. For now, I have a single ('under construction') page at the root level, with a link to the real home page which is in a folder ('www'), also at the root level, along with the rest of the website pages. With the .htaccess file in the root directory, I get prompted for a login-password properly, but then I get a 500 'server error'.
Here is the .htaccess file:
AuthType basic
AuthName "Access limited during construction..."
AuthUserFile /www/.htpasswd
require valid-user

And the .htpasswd file (placed inside the www folder):

Can someone please (kindly) tell me what I am doing wrong?

A:Solved: noob with simple .htaccess question

I believe unencrypted passwords are only supported on Windows servers and by default MD5 encryption will be used unless otherwise explicitly specified. Try using an online htpasswd Password Generator to take your plain text password and generate the equivalent encrypted password to use in your .htpasswd file.

Hi, is this router any good for basic wireless use and security? Also, if your wireless adapter doesn't support WPA but the router does the connection is still insecure, correct? They must both support WPA right?

A:Is this wireless router good, plus a noob question.

Correct, both ends must support the encryption protocol you intend to use. The router is fine, though there are frequently much better deals to be had on routers. I suggest watching these sites for a week or two, you'd be amazed how many really cheap routers will come by.

I was looking at my display settings and it recognizes my current main display as HP s2031 wide screen LCD monitor. So that's good because it's right.

When I clicked the advanced settings in that same window and proceed then to color management tab followed by clicking on the color managment button in that same tab, it then shows the drop down list of devices.

The first one is my default monitor which is HP s2031 wide screen LCD monitor as I mentioned before.

There are two color profiles listed in the box under this monitor but the tick box doesn't say to use either one of them on this device.

those two profiles, assuming that I was to check that tick box become managable once ticked but I don't know two things.

First, do I leave the thing unticked as it is and second, If I tick the box that says to "use my settings for this device" then which profile do i use?

These are the two profiles listed should I choose to tick that box.

HP s2031 LCD mMonitor(default) --- HP s2031.icm

sRGB IEC61966-2.1 --- sRGB Color Space Profile.icm

Also, is there a reason that the box is unticked to "use my settings for this device" in the first place, I wonder?

Of course, in the middle of this posting, I clicked that "change system defaults" button in the advanced tab and it did something. I have no clue what, it was so fast.

Geez. I told you I was a noob at this.

A:Noob Question about default color profiles

It's likely that windows is already using the HP color profile. The RGB color profile is an image profile (of the color space assigned to the image), the standard profile for jpg images. For instance, I use the ProPhoto RGB color profile for all of my images until I save to jpg, at which time the sRGB IEC61966... profile is applied.

The HP profile is a device profile, created specifically for your monitor.

You can create your own color profiles for your devices using calibration software. You would check the 'Use my settings' option if you wished to use a profile you or someone else created, meaning really, any profile other than that windows assigned.

If you have no need for different color profiles (i.e., to ensure that your monitor or other device is displaying accurate colors, which you would need for image editing, etc.) and are happy with the appearance of your display, don't worry about it. If you're just curious and want to change the profile, you can always check the 'Use my settings..." box and choose any profile you like, switching it back if you don't like it. Try the HP profile first to see if you see any difference, although, as stated, it's likely already in use, esp. since Windows correctly identifies your monitor.

It may be wise, however, to create a System Restore point before making such changes, just in case things go south.

I'm being a little lazy and I know the answer already, but I'm asking anyway in the vain hope.....

One of my HDD's is failing quickly and I 'suspect' that it's the current drive that the beta is installed on (although I'm still not certain) and rather than go through all the nuisance of partitioning / installing on another drive, is there a way to copy the current install (6801) holus bolus to another drive and repair / modify the boot records / registry to make it function?

Alternatively, could I make a bootable image and use that to re-install on a new drive? I've never created an 'image' so that's new territory for me.

As I said, I doubt it's possible but as I've already spent days 'setting up' 6801, I really don't feel like doing it all again so soon, but the way my rigs been acting up, I may not have a choice.

(I've already installed a total of 5 fresh installations in the last couple of days and it's getting time consuming and tiresome)

A:Copying OS to another drive? nOOb style question :)

Yes. I use Acronis True Image. The only problem I have encountered have been with using the Drive copy from within Vista. It doesn't seem to work on the Boot Drive. But will mirror image any other drive. To get around this I dual boot XP on a different drive. I am sure there are other Diskcopy programs out there that work equally as well. On Xp I used to have a utility provided by Seagate that worked a treat.

A:Total noob Motherboard > processor question. Please help if you can :)

If you are looking to build a new system, I wouldn't recommend that CPU. It is a dual core, but Intel's newest dual cores are a HUGE improvement over the one you are looking at. You want a core 2 duo CPU. They walk circles around the one you are looking at. And I especially recommend the core 2 duo cpu if you are looking at that graphics card. It needs a very fast CPU to run at it's full potential.

Regardless, you would not be able to use your current ram in the new system. Either way, you'll need to get DDR2 ram (you currently are using DDR).

Then you'll need a core2duo compatible motherboard. Here is a budget level board:

Some ram:

And if you are going to get that GPU, you will also be needing a new power supply to power it up. That graphics card is a monster.

Hi All!

I just got a new laptop.

I went through the suggested 'break-in' cycle with the battery; that is, letting it drain, charging, letting it drain, etc.

So the question is this: Does running the laptop on AC power shorten the life of the battery? This may sound stupid, but I have other battery-run devices that suggest this is a bad idea.

What are best practices for optimizing battery life?
And what can I reasonably expect the life of the battery to be?

You don't have to 'format' a DVD+RW disk first. What you do need to do in Nero is to 'quickly erase' the DVD+RW content first before burning data.

You may want to do backups because you can't get certain files/foldders out of a system image (not easily). Also, if you reinstall Windows, then you can restore from backup and it will give you your music and pictures and documents. If you restore from a system image, it will erase your new Windows install and put the old one back on.
