A: EVGA adapter provides more power to your PCIe bus

I'm not sure. I had thought that was what the power connectors on the PCI-E devices (ex: graphics card) were for.

I can also see someone possibly frying their motherboard if this adapter was connected incorrectly in the PCI-E slot.

so heres my issue. i just picked up this card yesterday and its in great condition but used. this card also doesnt need any external power source, cuz it is the pcie version. currently i have a geforce 7300 le pcie that im replacing.
both cards share the same driver package from nvidia.
so first i plainly shutdown my computer, then swapped out the cards and turned it back on....no go blank screen.
plugged my other card back in. a go, still worked fine.
went to my cmos and changed it from auto to onboard/peg setting. still no go, so i changed that back to auto.
then i booted up, uninstalled the drivers. shutdown, replaced, still no go, booted back up reinstalled the latest package from nvidia, still no go.
so then i took out the card, left the pcie slot open, then the system booted with the integrated card.
then i shutdown the computer, then put the new card in, and still no go.
then i plugged the cable into the integrated vga port, with the new card in the slot, and its not switching to onboard.
so heres what ive gathered.
the card is getting power cuz the fan is spinning( but maybe not enough?), the mobo is recognizing that "a" card is in the slot (but doensnt know which one?).
and i dont hear any beeps or noises either, and i blew out all dust or anything that could create a bad connection in the slot, and the guy who sold it to me said it worked, i think he just pulled it right out of his computer.
im stumped anyone who has any ideas at all please help me, i r... Read more

Hi all, long time no see. I was at work this morning when I noticed a product sitting on the counter. n ow this isn't uncommon as there is often product laying around before the store opens, it's my job to put it all away. Anyways, this particular product was an EVGA USB-VGA Adapter. I took a closer look at it and it appears that what it does is allow people that don't have secondary monitor outputs to use an open USB 2.0 port to achieve the same effect. Now, I do have 2 DVI ports on my computer, and 2 monitors, but my question is not related to that, it's this, would I be able to reverse the...flow, meaning instead of going from the computer through USB to the monitor, could I go from something outputting a VGA signal and put it into the computer? Here is the product on Circuit City's (where I work) website:

Maybe FRAPS or some screen recording software.

I edited this question a few times because new stuff keeps coming up. Sorry for all of that...

I have 2 different Medialink Wifi adapters. They both show my network on my dad's PC but won't show my network on my PC. My PC just recently started taking longer to connect to my network and now when I turned it on it just won't see my network. When I plugged the older adapter into my PC, my network came up for a split second and then disappeared. I am restarting my PC now but I am getting frustrated with this thing. If it's not a BSOD from a bad cable or bad drive (as diagnosed by you guys) then it's something like bad Wifi or my graphics card fan getting disconnected from the graphics card motherboard.

My PC is about 10 feet away and has always had 4 out of 5 bars for strength. If it were my adapter going bad then I would not be able to access the internet from this PC I'm using now.

edit: I plugged the adapter into the USB slot right on the board instead of using an extension dongle that connected to my front panel USB port. It seems to have fixed the issue but this brings up another point. Should I just get a PCIe adapter with some long antennas? That seems to be the best option at fixing my connection. I need my connection right when Windows shows up because I have a few startup programs that need an internet connection and if they don't detect a connection then they will just crap themselves. Steam, Skype, Origin, and Skydrive.

A:USB adapter not working like it should. Should I get a PCIe one?

Hi thready,

Longer antenna doesn't mean greater wireless coverage, the higher the dBi means greater coverage. Please see the different specs here.

my laptop has a espresscard54 slot and i would like to get an adapter to connect a PCI express video card. i am looking for somthing that will cost $200 or less

A:expresscard to PCIe adapter

I've seen a few adapters like your asking, but they are kinda hard to find, and run about $600-700+ Asus is making the XG station soon supposedly, which will likely be less than $700, but I don't really know what pricing will be, but I'd guess still above $200. Also, using an expresscard to pci-e setup reduces the pci-e bandwidth to pci-e x1, so there's no real point to using a really high end card, since the single pci-e lane will be a bottleneck. Most any pci-e x16 card will be better than integrated though....

I just bought an ASUS PCE-N53 PCI-E adapter for my PC that I built several months ago. Previously, I was just using ethernet. Put the card in my PCI-E 1 slot, and installed the drivers from the installation disc, but nothing shows up in Device Manager and I have no wireless option in my Network Connections settings. Any idea why it's not showing up, minus it being dead out of the box? I can't try it in my PCI-E 2 slot because my graphics card is in the way. Thanks in advance!

A:PCIe Wireless adapter is not being recognized

This sounds like the motherboard is not detecting you have the card installed. Make sure it is fully inserted, also, I wonder if you have a setting in the BIOS that needs to be applied to activate the PCI-E slot.

If the board is detected there should be some evidence of it in Device Manager, do you see anything in Other Devices with a yellow question mark?

This is a new build of mine and this is the last little bug to be ironed out. My network adapter is not being recognized by windows(it does not show up in device manager. The card has power as the LED on the back flashes consistently on and off. I have disabled the two on board ethernet ports so there should be no interference there. I have tried the card in at least two other PCIe slots and still nothing. I have tried installing the drivers but the setup program fails to find the card. The last thing I an think of to try is testing the card in another system but it might be a few days before I can make that happen. At least that might tell me if the card is DOA or if maybe it's my fault. Any thoughts, help or input will be much appreciated, thank you.

I have a mini pcie mSATA card that I want to use for a desktop of mine. Kingston sm200s3 60GB

I believe there are only 2 options.
1. SATA > SATA adapter > mSATA card
2. PCIe slot > PCI adapter > mSATA card.

As far as 2. goes; I have found a card that fits into a PCIe slot which has an input for the mSATA card.

I know that this is not the ideal way to hook up the card but I don't see any more options.

Which is there better way to go or what am I missing?

A:Mini PCIe and adapter VS. SATA

Whatever has an mSATA interface for it will work.

From here SSD Kingston 60GB SM200S3/60G mSATA p/ Ultrabook,tablet - Atera Inform?tica

its a SATA 3 device, so for optimal performance you should use something that can guarantee enough bandwith to not bottleneck it.

PCIe bandwith depends from number of lanes used (a x1 card has one lane, a x2 card has two and so on) and the PCIe revision/version of both devices. The panel on the right here gives all speeds https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express so just multiply that by the number of lanes the card has and you will find out its bandwith. SATA 3 has 6 GB/s of theoretical max bandwith, although actual transfer speed does not go above 1 GB/s afaik.

are examples of what you listed as 1, and stuff I would orient myself towards if my mobo had SATA 3 connectors already. Because... hey, why waste PCIe slots for that?

What im ultimately looking for is a way to power up my notebook video-wise. I have a Toshiba Satellite M45. I want to be able to play games better. I have already upgraded my RAM to 1GB and looking into upgrading it further to 1.5 GB. However, my current video card is a complete let-down. It is an ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M (mobile). I was looking for a way to make my video performance better. I do not want to take apart my notebook, and i DO NOT want to get a new computer (and i cant) so dont say that. Here are my options:

1.Get an external video card. I dont know if these have come out yet, but i tried looking it up on google and just got paragraphs of people ranting about how sweet theyre gunna be when they come out.
-OR-
2.Get some sort of external adapter than let me use PCIe or AGP cards. Maybe there is a USB connector that you plug into your laptop, and it leads to a box where you can input an AGP or PCIe video card. Does this exist? i looked on google but i couldnt seem to phrase it right and always got results of PCIe or AGP cards that have USB inputs, not the other way around.
Thanks for any suggestions, or please is there is another way to inprove my performance WITHOUT BUYING A NEW COMP, please let me know. Thanks!

Hey all,

I'm upgrading my SSD from an Intel SATA II 320 120GB - which has worked very well for me - to a Samsung SATA III 840 EVO 250GB. My computer doesn't have any native SATA III hookups, but I do have several PCIe 2.0 slots that are open and ready to be used. As such, I've decided to purchase a PCIe to SATA III adapter so that I can run the drive through the adapter, and hopefully get better performance than using SATA II.

My first question is, is there a recommended controller or card that anyone here has used? I've heard that while sub $100 cards can work, most use Marvell controllers which have mixed performance. However I'm still unsure. For example, here's an affordable SATA 3 card, and the reviews are mostly positive, but it is a Marvell controller. I've read that LSI is a reliable brand that makes excellent controllers, but the cost is prohibitive for most upgraders.

I know that if I get any PCIe card, the first thing I should do is get at least a dual lane x2 or x4 card. Anything higher than that will be overkill, but x1 will probably be too little bandwidth.

To clarify, I'm not going to be running RAID with any of my drives. I have a standard 500GB HDD that I'm going to leave on the SATA II port on the mobo. I'm not sure if I should use HyperDuo mode or not if I get a card that sports such a feature. I've read that while HyperDuo is a convenient feature, SSD performance does take a dive, as opposed to a manual SSD+HDD setup.

This problem is posted all over the inet - but no solutions yet that I could find. I have a VLI VL-800 device connected to the PCIe 1x bus. It creates 4x USB3 ports on the front panel, one being used for a card reader. When it is inserted and I plug in a USB device it will function for a time then either stop operating or worse freeze the system. The operation appears random but MAY be triggered by my FF browser as it seems like most, maybe all, of the freezes occur when I am browsing. The freeze generates no info file as a BSOD would so I am totally lost as to how to troubleshoot this. It occurred with 2 different MB. It has been reported with Linux OS as well as Windoz. (I don't use Linux). Does anyone have any tips on how to troubleshoot this - or even where the problem may lie? I really don't want to just trash this product.

Hi ruggb,

As you have checked a different motherboard and also on different operating system as well so we are left with a faulty card only.

If this is a new card check if you can return it for a different model. Otherwise, it would be better if purchase a different model USB 3.0 PCI card for the system.

Hope it helps.

Unfortunately, at my school you need a dual band wireless adapter in order to connect to the internet. With my current laptop, there are certain requirements it must meet in order for it to work.
it must be a full height card. An adapter will not work as the antenna wires won't go that far.
It needs to have 2 antenna ports. I have found a few ones which fit all the other specifications, but they appear to have 3 ports.
Obviously it must be PCIe-mini and dual band, as stated in the title
Does anyone know what one to get, or even if there is one that meets those specifications?

A:buying laptop PCIe mini dual band adapter

Your post is confusing for a few reasons:
Laptops do not have expansion slots, PCIe or otherwise. Everything is expanded through the external ports.
Very few laptops are made with dual band adapters right now. It is curious that a school would require something that is only available on top end laptops.
Wires? Network connectivity is done through CAT5 or 6 Ethernet wiring or wirelessly.
Dual band refers to the frequency of the wireless signal: 2.4GHz or 5GHz.
The antennas on a wireless device correspond to the channels that the wireless signal is sent out on. 2 antennae do not equal dual band.
Full height or half height cards are only configurations. The configuration of a card has nothing to do with performance. Where are you going to put a full height card for desktop PC in a laptop?
PCIe-mini makes a little more sense, but contradicts the earlier need for a full height card. These are opposites.
Perhaps it would be better to explain what you are trying to do.

Ok so I just got a used Intel Dual Gigabit 1000/PRO PT PCIE network adapter.

My Hardware is as follows:

Intel i7 3770k
ASUS Z77V-PRO mobo
8GB Ram
AMD Radeon HD 7850 video card
Audigy2 ZS PCI sound card

I have the most up to date BIOS on the motherboard

So I installed the network adapter into 1 of my 2 free pcie slots.
In BIOS I disable the onboard LAN adapter.

Load into windows and I get a new hardware installation message saying that the drivers for my "Xeon processor E3-1200 v2/3rd Gen Core processor PCI Express Root Port - 0155" has been installed and ready. That is my first WTF.

I try to install the newest Intel drivers provided by the Intel website, I get an error saying "There is no Intel Network Adapter installed on your computer" error. 2nd WTF

I have no tried numerous combinations of using my 2nd free pcie slot in the mobo, no change in situation.

THe odd thing is, is that on the network card when its plugged in and computer turned on the green lights on the ports are on solid (not flashing) as I have no cable in them yet. So I dont think the card is dead. The card was used but looked to be in perfect condition.

What is the problem, can anyone help? I cant find any other people having many issues with these cards online.

does anyone know if there is an optimum power setting for the pcie 2.0 slots? I have 3x HD 4830 (i found out are really 4850's) but i think the max power draw is the same on both, anyway my pcie slots are defaulted to provide 25w and the rest comes via the 6 pin power connector. is there a optimum setting for the power provided from the pcie bus? or does it not make a difference? ** the pcie slots can be set from 0w - 255w**.

Thanks

A:PCIe power draw

The PCI-E slots provide 75W each and not 25W, assuming we are talking about PCI-E 2.0 slots here. So an x8 PCI-E 2.0 slot is equivalent to a PCI-E 1.1 x16 slot, and thus has the same electrical characteristics. The maximum power draw for a 2.0 x16 slot is 150W.

And no, there is no optimum setting AFAIK.

Here's the situation. I have this old mITX computer I built a few years ago that I'd like to hook up to Dad's big-screen TV so he can Skype from his living-room. Problem is, the computer is VGA only and his TV is HDMI only. The MoBo has just one PCI (not PCIe) slot with a maximum output of 75watts.

I tried a PCI video card with HDMI output, but the slot couldn't drive the card. Didn't even detect it.

I believe DVI uses less power (the cards are definitely cheaper), and I could just use a simple DVI-to-HDMI cable. A native HDMI port would be better. As long as it works, I don't care. But w/o an external power input, the card can't draw more than 75watts from the PCI slot.

Anyone know of a card that fits this very specific bill? Thx.

ADDENDUM: PC only has a tiny 300watt PSU.

A:I need a PCI (not PCIe) DVI card (either <75w or w/power input)

Check this one out: Zotac GeForce GT 610
It is a PCI Card (non express) that has DVI / VGA / HDMI. It is also a Low Profile and requires a 300w power supply or higher. It looks like it should work with your situation.

After looking at my 6600gt, the picture of the motherboad, and the picture of the cooler, I don't think it will work. You use the blue pci-e slot right?
I guess there are several options. If your chipset stays plenty cool you could try slowing the fan either using a software program, or by using a manual fan speed controller. Or I've seen people with the same heatsink and a similar board layout cut some of the spokes(or bend them), so that it wouldn't interfere with the card. There also might be replacments with a fan that is quieter available.

Do both cards work fine if you just have 1 installed?

Sounds like it could be a power issue if so.

My computer's main power supply is an average 1250 watt unit, which is sadly not enough to power both my computer and the video cards that are in it, as a Titan X (Nvidia Reference design) and Titan Z (Dell OEM card pulled from Area-51 R2) draw about half of that under load on their own. This is why I use an external 12v server PSU to provide the top power to the GPU's in my PC. The external PSU usually works great, and has never had issues with providing the Titan X power.
The external PSU has a Gigampz adapter on it to convert it into PCI power connectors for use with GPU's and such. I have a relay attached to the 5 volt power pin coming from a Molex drive power cable, which allows the relay to switch off when the PC's main power supply is turned off (also turning off the 12v external PSU attached to the system).
The rather frightening issue is, however, that when powering the Titan Z, the external power supply does not switch off anymore, and neither do the fans or LED's on the card. This leads me to believe that somehow the Titan Z has a botched power delivery system that is feeding either 5 volts or 12 volts through the PCIe slot back into the system, which is an issue for obvious reasons (endangering my motherboard, and the GPU itself, among other things).
When the PC's main power supply cuts, the relay controlling the external PSU does not loose power, meaning that even though the system's internal power supply is off, there is still somehow... Read more

I am looking for the best pciE video card under $100 that would be compatible with my Dell Inspiron 530 preferably without having to buy another power supply like I did my other computer ( Dell Inspiron 531) because it didn't have anything but sata cables so there was no way to plug in the 8 pin connector I believe it was from the video card to the power supply. The video card I had for the other computer was a nvidia 9600 gso 384 mb.

I am trying to get a video card of equal or greater performance than that video card because that video card played all the games I played on high settings such as Left 4 Dead, Call of duty modern warfare, call of duty world at war, and fallout 3 etc

Keeping my current oem power supply isn't too important though, however if I can find a video card that will run on this 300 watt power supply that can beat or match the video card listed above for under $100, then all the better!

I have a system that I just built with Win 7 64bit Ultimate. A Biostar A85w with Realtek PCIe GBe family network card. I am trying to get WOL to work and can get it to work if the settings in Power Management is all checked on.

Allow the Computer to turn of the device to save power
Allow this device to wake the computer
Only allow the magic packet to wake the computer

If I just sleep the computer the settings are remembered. If I restart the computer all of those settings become unchecked and I am unable to WOL.

I have updated Realtek 8111 drivers and nothing helps.

I have tried to change advanced settings such as enabling and disabling SHUT DOWN WOL but it never remembers the setting after a reboot.

How can I get these settings to stick after a power off or restart?

Thanks for any suggestions.

The tips I got with this Kensington 33197 power adapter have numbers stenciled on them like N3, N5, N19, etc. The tips sold on their web site make no mention of the "N" numbers and have numbers like K20059, K20050, etc. and there is no cross reference.

You can also see a complete reference for "N" numbers to all the laptops they support at the above link. Again, no mention of the numbers Kensington uses on their site.

I need a cross reference for these kinds of numbers.

Kensington referred me to their telephone tech support; but, there is a language or cultural barrier that prevents their understanding what I need.

Does anyone know of such a reference?

My laptop will no longer turn on.  When the AC adapter is plugged in, the LED light is white indicating power is arriving at the laptop. However, nothing happens when I push the power button. Troubleshooting steps I have completed already include: Hard reset (several times including after each step below)Tried starting without the batteryRemoved all removable components and reseated themRemoved all removable components as well as bottom cover. Cleaned with compressed air. Put everything back.Nothing appears wrong and nothing happened between the last time it turned on and this time that I am aware of. The laptop is out of warranty, and I am pretty handy with computers. Is there anything that can be suggested short of a hardware replacement that would help get this resolved? TIA

Yesterday I installed a Samsung 950 pro 256gb m2 pcie nvme ssd into a Dell E7270
Older configuration was with a sandisk regular sata 3 ssd. After replacement did a bios reset twice, once factory reset, once custom. (I left sata on ahci.)
I chose to install windows 10 pro x64 by using the uefi/gpt methode. Legacy options off.
Installation went without a problem. Afterwards I installed the Samsung nvme driver 1.4.7.17.
Also the Samsung magician software. It reports a link speed 8Gbps (is ok), link width 16 Gbps (should be 32?) .
Is there a way to change the pcie link width from 2x to 4x? I thought this ultrabook did support x4.

Hi,

I currently have Motherboard Asus P5B-Plus Vista edition which has
1 x PCI-E x16, 3 x PCI-E x1, 3 x PCI 2.2

I plan to build a data server with this motherboard and buy Promise Supertrak EX8350 which is PCI-E x4 Raid controller card.

My question is. Instead of buying a new motherboard that has PCI-E x4 slot.
Can I just install the PCI-E x4 Raid controller card into PCI-E x16 slot which is normally for video card? And Just buy a cheap regular PCI video card for PCI 2.2 slot?

Hopefully someone could help me with this and I thank you in advance.

This is a common problem (I see lots of posts)
The problem source is the [Dell] AC adapter.  PA-21 Family, 65W, P/N: NX061.  It is made in China.
I have an XPS M1330.  Using Dell after warranty service, replaced the Mother Board twice, replaced the battery twice, replaced the AC adapter twice - not fixing it.
Turns out the power warning message is very informative.  It states "Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance".  So, I plugged in my Dell 95W adapter - WOW Problem Solved.
A lab test of my new Dell 65W AC adapter shows it to be 64.6 watts.  If this unit gets hot (like after several hours of use), it may not put out the full 65 watts - the system may not recognize the adapter, it may power the system ok, but won't charge the battery.
These units burn out after only a few months of use. Their cables are too fragile. If Dell's or their supplier's Quality Control can't produce a reliable 65W product - I found seveal "Made In USA" universal adapters.

A:AC Adapter - Alert - "AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined"

Well my solution was simple.
I just removed the battery pack and powered up my notebook. Then I turned off the notebook replaced the battery pack and VOILA. The error message was gone.

I'm strongly considering a P9X79 WS MOBO for the 40-48 PCIe lanes it has available (depending on who you are talking to; I want to run a GPU, an LSI Internal SATA/SAS 9211-8i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 RAID Controller Card, a couple of TV tuners and a WiFi card). Because of space constraints in the case, the graphics card has to be kept down to a certain length to keep it from getting into the HDDs (please don't suggest a larger case; I just don't have room for it not to mention I'm a handicapped senior citizenn and need to keep weight down as much as possible). The card at the top of my list is a MSI R7850 Twin Frozr 2GD5/OC Radeon HD 7850 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16. Even though the MOBO's PCIe x16 slots are rated for PCIe 3.0, the most I can get on it is PCIe 2.0 because the only CPUs available for the LDA2011 socket on it, the Sandy Bridge E CPUs, will support only PCIe 2.0. An Ivy Bridge E for the 2011 socket won't be available until later this year, assuming Intel doesn't change their minds.

This PC will be used for office applications, basic photo editing, data storage (my books, music, movies ripped from DVDs and BDs, and personal reords), web surfing, listening to music, and watching movies (no gaming; I'm too old and slow). Although I'll initially just be running a single 22" monitor (1680 x x1050) and a 32" TV, I eventually want to replace the monitor with three 23" monitors (1920 x 1200). A:Running PCIe 3.0 Graphics Card on PCIe 2.0?

PCIe 3.0 is still irrelevant at this point, there is simply no current card that can effectively make use of the full bandwidth of 2.0 let alone 3.0. It is overrated and offers no real life performance advantage over 2.0. Running any PCIe 3.0 card in a PCIe 2.0 slot will not affect performance, the benefits of PCIe3.0 are only visible while running intensive applications with a multi-GPU setup.

Here is something I recently found out. I have tired this and it works.

You can use a PCIe x1 card, or a PCIe x4 card in a PCIe x16 slot. They work fine. So if you think you are short of PCI-e slots, you may not be. A shorter PCIe card works fine in a longer slot.

On PCIe X1, X4 and X16 slots, the first 18 pins are all wired the same, so as long as the PCI-Express card fits in the PCI-Express slot, it should work.

This is not the case for the legacy PCI (32-bit, non-express) slots, that are not PCI-Express. Those are not compatable with PCIe cards.
Picture of assorted PCIe and PCI slots.

The top four slots, in the picture above, are, from the top to bottom,
PCIe x4 slot , PCIe x16 slot, PCIe x1 slot and another PCIe x16 slot. A PCIe card that can physically fit in any of these slots will work, even if it doesn't fill the entire slot.

The bottom, 5th slot, is a PCI legacy (32-bit) slot. PCIe (express) cards will not work in this slot. It only accepts legacy PCI cards.

Here is the PCI-Express page on Wikipedia showing pinouts, etc.

Hi All
First time making a new thread here so im sorry if i do something wrong.

OK i built this rig two years ago, here some of the specs:
CPU: AMD 6000+ (3.3ghz)
Motherboard: Asus M2n32 deluxe WiFi
Ram: 4gb 800mhz ddr2
Video card: XFX 6800xt (i know had to make do)
so as you can see i need a new video card.

I play games like cod 4, left 4 dead, Crysis warhead and GTA IV and i like these game in the highest video settings i can have. I play at a res of 1440x900.
The GPU i would go for is a 9800gtx+ or a GTX260 (Core 216).

So the problem im facing is would my motherboard having PCIe 1.0 slow the card down (9800gtx+, GTX260 (Core 216)) or and work.

If it would slow down the card, i would upgrade the motherboard (could you tell me a model).

Thanks Offbow

BTW: im not a very good speller so im sorry for that

i want to try and crossfire two ati radeon 5770 cards on a MOBO the has one PCIe 2.0 and one PCIe 1.0 will both cards default to 1.0

A:PCIe 2.0 to PCIe 1.0 Crossfire will there be any issues

You might need to be more specific.
I don't think I've heard of a motherboard that natively takes a 2.0 spec lane (500MB/sec upload/dl per lane) and splits it to 1.0 (250MB/sec upload/dl per lane) - that is usually the function of an onboard bridge chip (or lane extender) such as Nvidia's NF200.

Now, taking your comments at face value -although if you could post the motherboard vendor/model it would certainly help- then it is likely that the PCI-E lanes would be 1.0 spec.
The bright side is that, the HD5770 doesn't use enough bandwidth to make any difference whether the lanes are 1.0 or 2.0 (or 3.0 -soon to be added), unless the slot is labelled PCIe x16 but is actually x4 electrical (or lower).

For the last two weeks, every time I start my Dell INSPIRON E1705 while using the power supply I am greeted with the following message. "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation". I press the F1 Key and everything works fine. I've read about this on other websites and most say it's a design flaw in the power supply after the cord has been properly wound around the supply as designed. Apparently a few of the cords internal wire strands become broken and cause this message. My computer is from June 2006 and shouldn't be having this issue so early...or ever. This seems like a flaw that should have created some type of manufacturers recall since so many people are having this issue. I'm of course out of warranty, will Dell replace this free of charge?

`

A:Power Supply - "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined....."

You are correct, the failure is due toloss of the power supply ID signal. Sometimes this happens because of strain on the plug, which breaks the signal wire. Some even are so severe that the insulation breaks away from the plug; this is due to rough handling. The other cause is one or more of the power socket solder connections to the system board become broken. This also is related to severe handling. I have seen one case where all three power connections and three of four mechanical connections were disconnected. If the power supply is bad, a replacement will cure the problem. If not, then the socket is bad, and this will require a system board replacement. If you are experienced, you can try to resolder the connections. I am experienced and was not able to get my daughter's E6000 to work by resoldered. More recent Dells are using a replacable power connection board which is a much cheaper repair.

A:Power adapter

Hi SUSMI,
The system is designed to support both 45W and 65W adapters - see the specifications here - http://dell.to/2fhPLIf
When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

A:Power Adapter

Hello aaronbaron,

Reseat the power adapter just means make sure the power adapter is plugged in good on the laptop and the wall outlet. I would try powering off the laptop, unplug the power cord, take the new battery out. Reinstall the new battery only and try to power on the computer. If that does not work plug in the power cord and power up with the new battery installed.

Though I had posted this previously, but cannot find it anywhere!

Got an Altec Lansing Multimedia Computer Speaker System ACS41. Apparently they were used on a Gateway 2000 PC.
However, the power adapter was lost.
The speakers do not have any electrical specs on them regarding voltage, amps, and polarity.

Anyone have a similar set of speakers, or,
know of any way this type of info can be found out, in order to get the right power adapter for them. Do not care to fry them with an overkill. The speakers probably came with PCs running Windows 98SE, or Windows Millennium.

Prefer not to go to Radio Shack, they normally are rather expensive, and the people who own this do not want to go that route.

Thanks for the help.

A:Power Adapter for Speaker Set

We had a system crash here and some posts were lost. There was an answer, but I forget what it was. It may be as cheap to buy a new pair of speakers as to buy a power adapter.

Hello,

Recently I purchased a VX1945WM monitor and I was not given a power adapter to run the different integrated features that the monitor offers such as powered speakers and iPod dock among others. I tried contacting Viewsonic, but that was to no avail. If anyone knows the model number or distributor, please let me know.

Thanks,

Matt

The Yoga 3 Pro power adapter looks like a normal USB brick, and the cord looks like USB, except with a kink in the connector at the Yoga 3 Pro end. Can I charge my phone or tablet with it?

A:What's with the Yoga 3 Pro power adapter - it's a ...

Yes the Yoga 3 Pro power adapter is a USB charger too!

How does it work?

The special "fool proof" charging cord has two extra pins on the AC adapter end and two extra pins on the Yoga 3 Pro end. The extra pins only make a connection when the fool proof cord is plugged in to the Lenovo charger and the Yoga 3 Pro. When a regular USB cord is plugged into either the charger or the Yoga 3 Pro, it makes a regular USB connection.

Can I charge the Yoga 3 Pro with any USB charger?

No. The Yoga 3 Pro requires 2A at 20V, which is what the provided 40W Lenovo AC adapter supplies.

Can I charge a USB device with the Yoga 3 Pro AC adapter?

Absolutely. In addition to 2A at 20, the Yoga 3 Pro AC adapter supplies 2A at 5.2V (10.4W), enough to charge a phone or tablet. Works for iPad.

Where can I buy spare AC adapters and cords?

AC adapters with cords are sold in the accessories section of the Lenovo store.

Where do I find the part numbers for the AC adapter and cord?

Look for AC Adapters In the PDF Yoga 3 Pro Hardware Maintenance Manual.

What are the USB specs of the Yoga 3 charging port?

It's a USB 2.0 port. It provides enough power to charge an iPhone, but not enough to charge an iPad. If you want to charge an iPad, try the USB 3.0 port on the right of the Yoga 3 Pro.

This is a recent problem - a previous adapter broke and now subsequent adapters use 100% CPU and sloooow my laptop.

It's an hp 6720s 13 months old, XP Home, HP 65W power adapter.

Laptop running fine on battery only. Laptop runs fine when battery removed and power adapter is connected. Laptop does not run fine when battery and power adapter connected - 100% CPU.

Also, the charge indicator light no longer works and the power icon does not show that the battery is charging, although it is.

I've updated the BIOS, restored factory power settings and tested the power adapter during startup and have the same prob with the CPU usage.

What could cause the power adapter to use 100% CPU? Please let me know if you need more info, cheers.

A:Laptop power adapter uses 100% CPU

Is this an Adapter obtained from HP as a direct replacement for the proper adapter as shipped from HP with the laptop?

I have a Precision 7510 updated with the latest Bios and drivers. Today my TB15 arrived. I haven't tested connecting a monitor to it yet only a network cable and USB 3.0 stick - this worked fine.
I also tried starting the laptop from the button on the TB15 which also works fine.
However on startup I receive an error message:
"Alert! You have attached an undersized 130W power adapter to you system, which is less than the recommended 180W power adapter" ... message carries on a bit.
Now the thing is both the TB15 power adapter and 7510 power adapter are the same (identical part number) and  are shown to be 180W output.
What's the problem here and what do I need to do ?

A:Undersized power adapter

Any one any idea on this error ? Message appears at Bios post stage... i.e. early on just after switching on.

I have a 20 pin motherboard but the power supply I have available has a 24 pin connector. I've read that you can simply plug them together by offsetting the 24 pin one but so far I don't see that working at all (and 'never the twain shall meet', so to speak). I've found adapters but they all say something akin to

'allows you to connect your existing 20 pin power supply to your new 24-pin compatible motherboard'

You can use it the other way around, correct?

thanks

A:20 to 24 pin power supply adapter

Some mainboard connectors are 20+4 pins where the 4 pins unsnap from the 20 pins for use with boards with a 20 pin connector. If your power supply doesn't have that feature you would use an adapter such as this.

I have this mode laptop: toshiba satelite p305d-s8900 And am going to have to replace the power adapter pretty soon. It cuts out all the time and the cord is so flimsy it will probably break pretty soon. Any idea where I can get a new one for under $50.00? I'd prefer to have an actual duplicate, not another brand thats just generic and cheap. On Toshiba's website the replacement is $89.00.

A:Toshiba - new a/c power adapter - where can I get a new one?

You can try NewEgg.com. Anything under $80 is going to be generic and cheap.

I have an hp pavillion dv 6000 that I lost the power adapter to. My friend has an adapter for an hp pavillion dv9000 that he does not need anymore and he wants to sell it to me. I want to know if it will work with my computer. The adapter puts out 19volts 4.74 amps 90 wants max. The replacement adapters for my model (dv6000) list the power output as 18.5 volts 3.5 amps 65 watts.

Will an adapter that was higher voltage amps and wattage work for my laptop that requires less??? This is assuming that the connector is the same which I'm not sure of.

Hello!

I received the following message when I am booting up my Dell ATG Laptop. Does this mean I need a new power cord? If so, is there anywhere recommended to purchase or do I just go to the dell website?

The AC Power Adapter Wattage and Type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance. To resolve this issue, try to reset the power adapter. Strike the F3 key (before F1 or F2 key) if you do not want to see the power warning again.

Strike the F1 to to continue. F2 to run the setup utility, Pree F5 to run onboard diagnostics.
Thank you so much for the assistance!

Hi everyone.

I know that this is not really entirely related to a Windows 7 computer and especially to these forums, but I really need some advice on this and it would be great if anyone who has experience in voltage, amps and safety for laptop power adapters would be perfect.

My friend has just traveled down to my house for a week but has foolishly forgot his plug for the power socket on his power adapter. He uses this for his computer. Again unrelated becuase it is an Apple 45W MagSafe2 adapter.

So I was wondering if he could simply use a cord like this one below to plug into the adapter?
The black cord is 2.5A 250V~

The adapter is 100-240V~ 1A

These are both for input.

Any help would be greatly appreciated .

A:Power Adapter Problem

That white 'thing' appears to be for an Apple Macintosh MacBook/MacBook Pro [I have a MacBook Pro] and you might not be able use the black cord due to fit, the V-shaped notch in the black plug would have to let it be inserted. But it probably won't hurt to try as it's still a 110/120Volt source.

The MacBook power adapter also came with a piece that replaced that cord and has the prongs to plug directly into a wall socket/extension cord, maybe it's in his Notebook bag.

Can anybody answer the following questions about a laptop power adapter?

Is there a maximum length for the dc cord? In other words why do they locate the adapter 1/2 way down the cord instead of closer to the outlet.

Is the small cylinder around the cord about 3" before it enters the laptop some sort of choke/filter?

Thanks.

There is no particular reason for this, either side of the power supply could be lengthened or shortened.

My neighbour was given a second-hand computer and asked for my help setting it up.

It is a Dell Optiplex 755 running Win7.

Currently installed graphics is NVidia Quadro FX 3500.

I looked up the service tag and this is not the original card (Original was ATI HD2400XT).

The issue I have is that the FX3500 is an 80W card, with the PCI-E slot having a max of 75W. On booting I get low power warnings from the NVidia card.

The card has a 6 pin PCI-E connection available for the additional power, but the PSU has no PCI-E power cable.

The only free power cables from the PSU are a couple of 15pin SATA cables. I have seen adapter cables for 15pin SATA to 6 pin PCI-E. Are these any good for my situation?

If not, what are the alternatives? New PSU? Different GFX card?

A:Power adapter cable for PCI-E

Based on what you just told us, one of those adapter cables should work just fine.

What is a good, affordable universal power adapter for a laptop. My dad's power adapter for his Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop went out and I need an affordable replacement as I can't pay for a direct replacement right now. The output for the dead power adapter is 19.5V and I believe it is a 65 watt power adapter.

Do check the Seller Rating. I also look for closest shipper (I want what I want when I want it). You should see all the details in the Ad for what you need, if details are not there, you can move on to the next, or contact the Seller. Either way, they have a very fast return policy if what you ordered does not suit your needs.
