LCD Brightness control doesn't work after resume from sleep/hibernatio

Q: LCD Brightness control doesn't work after resume from sleep/hibernatio

Occasionally, when resume from hibernation/suspend, display brightness control doesn't work. Means that Fn + F2,F3 doesn't work, change from Windows Power Options doesn't work, change from intel graphic doesn't work.
Anyone know if I have to restart some services to get it working? It's occasional and I can't find anything exact in EventLog.
My system is HP Probook 4230s with Core i5-2410 with intel HD3000. Latest patches on both Win 7 Pro 32-bit and intel driver.
Restart machines solve the problem, re-hibernate or re-suspend machine occasionally solve the problem, but mostly not.

See if HP have an update for their firmware or function key control drivers. I know its a new pc, but its worth a shot.

Many people having problems with the brightness control (doesnt work) when you resume your notebook from sleep/hibernate. I noticed that the problem only occurs if you set the action (sleep/hibernate) for when you closing the lid. But if you set the sleep/hibernate action for the powerbutton, the brightness works fine on resume.I have search many sites but no one has a fix yet. Does MS knows about this brightness problem for W7 ?

I have HP pavillion DV6703TX laptop and there is a problem with brightness in it. When it resumes from sleep its brightness change control stops working, means it cannot be changed either by F7 and F8 keys or by power management option in vista settings. Also brightness option in windows mobility center is not shown after this happens, every other options like sound, battery state shows on hitting WIN+X. So to change brightness I have to restart windows then it works completely fine and brightness option also shows on mobilty center box. Is there any hotfix for this like there was one for sound problem after sleep in vista. I have upgraded the latest available video driver on driver download support section but the problem persists. please help :-(

Yeah, when I put my lappie to sleep and then wake it up again in the morning, it's usually on a lower birghtness setting and the function keys seems to have stopped working so I either have to reboot or adjust it via Start > Control Panel.

The volume control also fails to show up on the screen, but appears to still work.

Anyone know what I need to to do fix this? Sony Care Centre or something?

There are countless threads with people who can't change brightness on Windows 10. Easily solved, switch to the generic Windows graphics driver. However, to me this solution removes the Sleep option in Power menu. Only Hibernate is left, but I don't want to use it. I just bought a small SSD for the OS and I want to save the write cycles.

So as the situation stands, I can either choose to have the Sleep option with Intel Graphics 4000 driver, or have the brightness control with the Windows graphics driver. I chose the former, because I use sleep a few times a day, but don't change brightness very often. But I want both.

I am just checking, is there any option to have both sleep power setting AND working brightness control in Windows 10? Is Microsoft or Intel working on fixing the problem?
- I use two graphics drivers at once - NVidia and Intel 4000. Can't have just NVidia, that removes both brightness and sleep.
- Yes, I have the latest Intel 4000 driver.
- Yes, I have disabled adaptive brightness.
- No, I can't adjust brightness manually, if I try that, the screen is totally dimmed and I have to switch the drivers to fix it.
- I have Lenovo Z500, Windows 10 with the Anniversary package - didn't help.
- I made a clean install of W10 after my old W10 install got stuck in update-remove update loop.

Hi guys,

I'm running windows 7 pro 64-bit and whenever my asus U31F goes into hibernate and i try to system resume, it takes over 5 minutes. The screen freezes on just saying system resume for a minute or two, then as the coloured balls that come in to make the windows logo - they come in frame by frame, pausing for ages on each frame. This whole process means i have to hard reset my computer if i need it quickly and is really really starting to annoy me. Is there anything i can do???

Note: On further inspection - i've realised that the drive doesn't start spinning while the screen is freezed, and then when it does that's aboutwhen they balls start to come into the screen.

Any insight would be much appreciated! Thanks!

A:System resume doesn't work!

Welcome to Seven Forums Longy99.

Using hibernate will sometimes corrupt files upon resuming. You might try Sleep instead and it should wake nearly instantly, saving what you were doing when it went to sleep.
Run sfc /scannow
Hibernate also creates a big, 2-10GB, hiberfil file too. You can try this: Hibernate - Enable or Disable to disable Hibernate, or re enable it if you still want to use it.

Help please and thanks, Mary

Here is my hijackthis text file.

A:Control/C Control/V control/alter/delete doesn't work

Mary, keyboard problems are not invariably software or malware-related. First things first - what OS are you talking about ? XP, Win 7, Win 8 or what? What type of keyboard is it? PS2, USB or wireless?

Disconnect it and reconnect it a few times, reboot and try again. Turn the keyboard upside down, placing one end on the edge of a thick book, and thump a few times on the back with your hand. Sweep the crud onto the carpet.....

Is it just a keyboard hardware problem, and if so which keys? tells you a lot of key combinations with ctrl and shift and alt. Tell us if any or none work?

Open a document and try typing a bit of text. Do all the characters work?

If it appears the keyboard is faulty, can you borrow another to test?

Quite often, keyboard problems are down to wireless problems: and can often be solved by re-installing the keyboard driver.

I have an Acer Aspire 8935G with W7 HP 64 on an SSD and Vista HP 64 on an HDD. The Fn keys controlling the display brightness control work on the Vista boot but not on the W7 boot. All the other Fn keys function as they should on the W7 boot. The Aspire has an OEM ATI Radeon HD4670 graphics card. I've tried all 3 available driver versions for the card & OS from AMD but these two Fn keys won't work. Any ideas what's going on here? Do the W7 drivers override or deactivate the Fn brightness control keys?

I purchased Dell Inspiron 5558 (with Windows 10) just two months ago (Nov 2015). Everything was working fine. However, recently I started to notice an annoying thing with the function keys F11 and F12 for reducing and increasing the brightness respectively.

Without using the Fn key (next to Windows key), if I hit F11 it was reducing the brightness and F12 was increasing the brightness earlier - as expected. Now, sometimes, the laptop monitor goes to sleep mode the moment I hit F11 or F12. I have to press the power button again to wake it up. This behavior is very off and on and not consistent.

Did any settings get changed? How to fix this? Please help.

FYI - I have not changed the BIOS settings from default which could be multimedia. I can say this because other multimedia keys in the same row behave normally (even when this strange behavior is noticed in F11 and F12).

A:Function keys for Brightness control (F11, F12) do not work as expected

Hello Shashi,
The settings for those FN keys are handled by the Dell Quickset Utility, and later the Dell Command Configuration application, so any changes you would want to make would be done in that application.
I would suggest going into that application and seeing if you can change the settings.   Putting a system to sleep is one of the functions available so perhaps the configuration has changed.   If you want additional help please click on my Dell Todd username and send me a private message with the Dell Service Tag of the system and I'll see if I can help.   Please keep all discussions and troubleshooting here in this thread so that others, with the same questions or problems, can see what is done to resolve.

This has been going on for ages. Upon a fresh boot, keyboard brightness dimming does not work until I put laptop to sleep. Then, the FN+up/down works fine. I can't remember if this has always been the case, but I know when I first got my laptop, Win7 pre-installed, the auto-dimmer was working. Now I am not sure it is (not that I mind, I don't want it on). Now, when I check Advanced Power Options, the "enable auto dimmer" isn't even listed.

I pretty much need to have quick brightness keyboard control due to my light sensitivity. Win+X is annoying to resort to.

Also, when the FN+up/down keys DO work to change the brightness, it says:
"Ambient Light Sensor Disabled". If that helps for anything. (Also also, I checked, and I have no "sensors" installed, so says my system.)
Also, my keyboard has a FN+Auto Dimmer key that is the 'left' key in the arrow set, but it doesn't appear to do anything. Or am I completely missing that THIS might be what I need to hit in order to enable keyboard dimming commands? (I haven't tried, but right now, after coming out of Sleep mode, the dimming commands are working and the "auto" option does nothing).

I bought a top of the line XPS 15 9550, with 1TB M.2 SSD, 4k touchscreen and 16GB of RAM. Had frequent blue screens of death that I fixed by replacing the SSD drivers with the Samsung ones.
Now my biggest woes are that quite often the speakers crack and that I cannot put the laptop in standby/sleep.
If I have the power supply plugged in and I put the laptop to sleep, when I wake it up from sleep the internal keyboard no longer works. The keyboard backlights react to my typing but windows doesn't see me typing anything. Even the CAPS LOCK led doesn't light up if I try to toggle that key. Luckily if I connect an external keyboard, that one works.
If I don't have the power supply plugged in and I put the laptop to sleep, when I try to wake it up from sleep, it instead tries to boot and complains about a missing loader file. At that point if I plug it in and I hit retry it proceeds with the rest of the boot but of course since this is a fresh boot all of my work prior to attempting to go into standby is lost.
Please advise.
thank you!

Hi michelewjy,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

I recommend you go to the laptop manufacturer's web site and find the drivers, firmware, and/or software appropriate to your graphics card and your monitor and your version of Vista and download them and update your system with the revised versions. Let's see if that helps. This may also be related to the SFC problem in your other thread - so I will check especially for anything that seems to apply to this issue.

I hope this helps. If not, post back and we'll try something different.

Good luck.

After updating to W10 insider fast ring build 14393.10 on my Lenovo G580 notebook, the Fn+Up brightness control key combination has stopped working. To check if Fn+Down was working, I pressed them and the brightness went down to "0" and now the screen is always black both while plugged-in and unplugged. Hence, I'm not able to increase the brightness anymore.
FYI, the "Up" arrow button works normally but the combination "Fn+Up" doesn't work while "Fn+Down" does.
Safe Mode doesn't allow adjustment of brightness since it cannot load the display driver.
I tried installing a third-party brightness control software while in Safe Mode but then realized it won't work until I log in to my account, in normal mode, which I cannot do since the brightness is at zero.
Please help me asap!
PS:- I have managed to increase the brightness for now but still the combination isn't working. Fn+Left arrow key combination also not working for volume down while Fn+Right arrow for volume up is working.

Every time I press the 'sleep' button on my keyboard my PC will go to sleep for maybe 10 seconds and then wakes right back up again. Even if I go through the start menu and select 'Stand By' it still doesn't work. There's no reason from what I can tell as to why it would be waking itself up on its own, so I was hoping maybe someone had an idea.

Could you please help me with this issue. Basically whenever I want to put my PC to sleep or hibernate, the monitor goes black but the computer keeps running. I can hear at least one HDD power down, but the rest of the hardware keeps going, all the fans (CPU, GPU, case), lights etc. I can try clicking the mouse buttons, pushing some keys - nothing; it will keep running until I reset it or cut the power off.
Also, sometimes, when I try to put it to sleep and it works, the problem is that it doesn't stay asleep for too long and it turns on by itself after 5-30mins.
I had suspected it was a messed up Windows, but recently I also formatted my drive and installed a clean Windows and the issue is still there. So I suspect either some program preventing sleep/hibernate or a faulty hardware (if it's possible, because I really don't know how it works).

I've bough a Dell Inspiron 1564 with win7 home premium x64 last month and everything was fine until a few days ago, when sleep mode stopped working. When I close my lid and open it up after some time there are 2 things that might happen:
1. The screen is just black, all the buttons are lit, I hear the fan, but no reaction at all. So I just forcibly turn off and turn it on again.
2. After opening the lid, nothing happens, when I try to turn it on, it loads up, but informs me that windows has not shut down properly last time (or something like that).

I currently run win7 ultimate 64bit, 8gig ram, intel i7-2600k cpu, and my OS runs on an OCZ SSD (all specs are in my profile)

Sleep mode is set to S3 in BIOS, I have hibernation disabled (so no hibernation.sys file on my c drive)

When I put my computer to sleep then immediately wake it up, the login screen shows instantly, I type in my pass and it loads in like 0.5 seconds.

When I put my computer to sleep but wait for around 1-2 hrs before waking it, it shows the login screen instantly but after i hit login, it gives me the Welcome spinning circle thingy for like 20 seconds before I can see my desktop. That's like longer than my entire boot-up time excluding POST.

Event viewer doesnt show any performance delay, and I dont think my OS drive (OCZ vertex 2) has a cache so I have it disabled. I'm sure all my mobo drivers and graphic drivers are up to date.

Suggestions on why this might be so? Any idea would be much appreciated!

A:Slow resume from sleep if sleep for long time

My laptop has this issue. I've just accepted the fact that it just does it and simply wait the time it takes or shut it down instead of putting it into sleep mode.

I noticed about a week ago that my system won't go to sleep unless I force it to sleep using the using the Function and F1 buttons on the keyboard. I also noticed about the same time that I tried to set it to use the ribbon screen saver and that doesn't work either. The screen saver looks fine in preview but it won't start up on it's own.

I tried working through the "Vista sleep problems" tutorial that was posted in a previous thread but none of that helped. I also tried doing a system restore several times and each time I get a window telling me that "system restore did not complete successfully becasue system restore couldn't access a file, probably due to anti-virus software. An unspecified error occured during system restore 0x80070005." I've tried disabling Norton Anti Virus and running system restore -- same result.

The rest of my system seems to be running fine and I really don't want to get into advanced recovery methods or doing a full restore of Windows if I don't have to. I don't know if this would matter but I did install a second internal HDD. It's not in any kind of RAID configuration or anything. I use it to capture/store video footage and I keep backup copies of several personal folders on it. I think sleep was working for a time after I installed the second drive.

Any advice to get sleep to function again? Thanks.

Came across my first major problem. When I try to go into sleep mode (either through the Start menu or pressing the power button), the hard drive light blinks for a second then the screen goes black. BUT... my power light stays on (should be blinking) and pressing it again, the mouse button... nor any key press on the keyboard will wake it up. I had to hard shutdown (holding the power key down for like 5 seconds) for the light go off and had to keep rebooting from scratch.

That's a major pain since waking up out of sleep mode is normally much faster and convenient. To make things worse.... it seems like 10 takes longer to boot up from scratch than 8.1 did. I've yet to see if SHUTDOWN works properly or not. Not a happy camper on the sleep mode issue. It worked under 8.1 just fine. Anybody else?!?

EDIT: Shutdown goes through a longer process, but ends the same as sleep does...... The power light stays on.

I'm using an HP Envy w/ i7-4510u CPU / 8GB RAM / 4GB Nvidia GTX 850M / 1TB drive

EDIT#2: Now SLEEP and SHUTDOWN appear to be working properly and Windows 10's boot up times are as fast or faster than 8.1 now. It's like a car and trying to clear out the lines of bad fuel before it runs right. Just some weird hiccups.

EDIT#3.... Now it's doing it again!

A:Sleep Mode doesn't work right nor does it wake up.

Identical issues here. Also an HP Envy. Also sleep/hibernate works sometimes and not others.

This will be a deal breaker for me if I can't turn off my computer and turn it back on with my status still intact. I'll (gulp) be forced to return to 8.1

Will post here if I figure out a solution

Hello, my computer (an 8510w HP laptop) doesn't play sound after returning from sleep mode (didn't test with hibernation but would suspect similar). The computer thinks it is and shows everything is well when checking the device manager and testing sound it will show the volume output for the played sound. So I'm curious if anyone has any ideas as to how this works.

Now I may have solved my problem, or learned more about it when I did the following:

Rightclicked on the speaker icon => Playback Devices => Opened Speakers => Advanced tab => Changed the sound quality; I got a message saying another program was using the speakers at the moment and asked me if I wanted to stop it. I said yes and the sound began working again as normal. I then got a message from S proxy I believe, which is either something I don't know of or its part of the Saver2 program for pandora.

Anyway that's what I know, any thoughts?

A:Sound doesn't work after sleep mode

After looking into this a bit I found a few people were able ot solve this problem by disabling Driver Level Enhancements.

I hope this helps!

Am i doing something wrong with this command? -REQUESTSOVERRIDE Process "IDMan.exe" SYSTEMpowercfg -REQUESTSOVERRIDE Process "IDMan.exe"powercfg -REQUESTSOVERRIDE Process IDMan.exe

Hi Zexeta If you go in your Device Manager, right-click on your headset and select Properties, you'll have a tab called Power Management. Under it, there's an option called Allow this device to wake computer. Simply uncheck it and this should solve your issue

I've seen similar issues, but not this. When I initially turn on the computer, Windows Media Center works just fine, tuner and all. But anytime after it's been in sleep mode, Media Center is almost unusable. Picture is sporratic, DVD's don't play properly, even iTunes Quicktime has playback issues. If I reboot it, everything is fine again....any suggestions?

Hello, its so bad, i reinstalled windows7 and now sleep mode doesnt work properly, it should permanently powerdown computer only rams are power-on, but now when i click sleep mode on my PC it goes to sleep, but computer is still working.

First in an administrator account type cmd in search, when it comes up type sfc /scannow. That may fix the problem

If not take you windows DVD and do a repair install. One of these should work. A repair is just an upgrade.

Hi Guys...I'm using the Lenovo multi touch driver for my X61T. With Windows 7 build 7000 the same driver when I wake my laptop from sleep the touch screen works. Starting with build 704x (i can't remember the exact build but it was the first leaked x64 build) when I wake the machine from sleep the touch screen doesn't work (both pen and finger touch)

I have tried to change USB settings but I haven't seen any fix. A restart of the machine means the tablet works again. Any ideas about a patch until Lenovo makes new drivers for Windows 7?

A:Touch Screen doesn't work out of sleep

There is a registry patch for better USB connectivity after waking from sleep, available from Lenovo.

Lenovo Support & downloads - Registry patch to improve USB device detection on resume from sleep for Windows Vista - Notebooks

How's the touchscreen working for you? Hope it's great! I don't like touchscreens because the screen can heat up and flicking your finger around on it can really burn.

I clicked on "Turn parental control on and deny computers access to ONLY these sites", entered the website url in the box, ticked it and set the schedule to always. But when I try to access the blocked web page it takes a little longer than usual but then loads on the website normally.

The two sites entered in the boxes are the ones I've tried to test the feature with, but both are not being blocked.

Can someone see anything I've done wrong?

I have tried emptying the cache and rebooting the computer and router, but still the pages just refuse to be blocked.

What's happening??? Advice would be appreciated.

Not sure if ths belongs here or in the security thread??

I could swear I've seen similar problems on this forum, but I did a search and didn't come up with anything.

3Ghz Pentium 4 512 MB of RAM running XP Pro. Last night a user on this PC installed MS updates, by logging off via the "install updates and shut down" option. When she came in this morning, the PC didn't respond to control + alt + delete. She asked me for help in logging on. I clicked on the help link in the control alt delet prompt, and the password prompt came up!?

The MS update button(at the bottom right corner of the screen - not sure what this is called) on her login still had the exclamation point on it, so I clicked on it to install the updates again. It installed and prompted for a restart. So I clicked on the restart now option. Nothing happened. I went to Start->shutdown, and nothing happened. I hit control alt delete, and nothing happened.

Ran spyware checks via spybot and ad-aware and they only turned up cookies. I am in the process of running a virus check right now.

My userid on the same computer has no problems. When I hit control alt delete, I get the standard prompt.

I'm running Windows XP SP2 and I have all my sound drivers installed (I can get sound just fine in every app), but I can't control the main volume in the Volume Control. I can adjust the volume with the Wave slider, but the main one doesn't do anything, including mute. Individual applications' volume controls work fine too, just not the main Windows one. It wouldn't be a problem, but it might be the reason why I'm not getting any volume on the Stereo Mix recording option. I just finished a clean install of XP (for a different reason) and it wasn't working before, either. Any ideas?

I'm running Microsoft professional, Internet Explorer and have a Google toolbar.

All attempts to add software are blocked and the add remove feature in the control panel won't open. For example, I can't update my old version of Itunes because the popup for the update gets blocked. I know about the popup blocker in the Google toolbar, and how to handle that, that isn't the problem. In Internet Options, the security setting is at medium and under the advanced tab I reset all options to default.

What version of IE are you using?

What other security programs do you have on the computer? It's possible that one of them is blocking the pop-ups.

I am currently using an Ethernet cable plugged directly into my motherboard for internet access. The other end is plugged into an electrical outlet adapter that I believe uses the electrical wires in my house to transmit the signal from my router. When I first boot up the PC, everything works fine. However, after the PC goes into sleep mode and I wake it up, the Internet connection no longer works. Usually it has the yellow ! icon and says limited connection. Why is it doing this, and how can I fix it?

A:Ethernet connection doesn't work after waking from sleep

Make sure the adapter is not set to go to sleep state in the device properties, in Device Manager. Also it could be an issue with the Ethernet over Power adapters losing the connection during the computer sleep state.

I just purchased a refurbished Inspiron 3147. The computer does not wake from sleep mode. Instead, there is a blip of power and then the system shuts off completely. Some things I have determined through testing and observation:
- The power does come on momentarily. This is confirmed by the flicker of light in the power indicator and the brief charge indicator for a USB connected phone.
- The hard drive does not Shut Down. It just goes dead. I confirmed this by testing a handful of software items, including Open Office, Evernote and Chrome. All had recovery dialogue on restart, though there was no Windows shutdown error dialogue.
- This doesn't matter how sleep mode is initiated. All of my Power Management options are set to Sleep Mode. It happens when I initiate it by closing the laptop lid. It happens when I initiate it through the start menu or charm bar. It happens when I initiate it via the login screen.
There is another issue which may or may not be related and that is the touchpad. I'm given to understand that the touchpad is a real issue with this particular model and I intend to address it in a separate post. For the purposes of this post, I will just say that it will not initiate until I manually go in and disable/reenable the trackpad through the control panel. The trackpad settings are inaccessible on startup through the system tray even though the icon is there and clickable. It just won't load. Sometimes it takes several attempts to load it thr... Hi All,

I had a problem about ipv6 on windows 7 for a long time. I have a ipv6 & ipv4 dual stack network.
Every time I wake up my computer, the ipv6 cannot work. The appearance is that I can't ping and access ipv6 website.
But after some research, I realize that only the DNS part is broken.
When I ping the ipv6 site like, it tells me it find no host, but if I use nslookup, I can find the ipv6 address. And the following are my tries:
ping -- not work
ping 2a00:1450:8001::68 -- does work, the ip is the address
ping -6 -- does work like the above

Thanks for your reading, any suggestion will be appreciated.

I have a Dell XPS L702X (i5 -2.3 Ghz, 6GB RAM) laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit that has been giving me issues for some time now and I haven't been able to find a solution. Windows explorer works fine when I start the computer. However, after resuming from sleep, 90% of the time trying to open any explorer window (my computer, my docs, etc.) will not work. I can open up documents within their respective applications (a word doc by opening word first, for example). But double clicking folders doesn't do anything, neither from the desktop nor from the start menu. When this happens, I've noticed 2 instances of explorer running in the task manager, in order to get it to work again I have to force quit both of them and log off. When I log on again, it usually works again. HOWEVER, if I leave an explorer window open before putting the laptop in sleep mode, it works fine upon resuming.

All drivers are up to date, as well as the Bios version. This has been driving me crazy for some time, would appreciate if anyone has an solution. Thanks!

A:Tecra P5 - Volume control doesn’t work properly

As far as I know volume control in the past was mechanical but now it works on different way and it is controlled by specific tool/utility.
To be honest Tecra P5 is not known to me but obviously it is Australian notebook model and according to Australian support page this notebook model is not supported for Windows 7.

That doesn?t mean you cannot use it but this means there is not software package designed for Windows 7 that can be installed so I think there is no much you can do about it.

I know it is annoying but for volume control you can use Windows option placed in task bar.

Yesterday I reinstalled Windows 7 on my notebook PC. I had to use a Microsoft installation disk because unfortunately, serious errors resulted after I installed from the HP recovery program. Consequently the HP drivers that were installed automatically with the recovery program weren't installed on my system. I had to install several of them from the HP support site. I got everything to work except for the Touch volume control, or the Volume Scroll Zone as referred to by HP in the service guide. This is the device located just above the keyboard that increases or decreases speaker volume when you drag you finger on it. I installed the Quick Launch button driver but that only applied to the mouse and pointer touchpad. I looked at the devices listed in my startup configuration. I saw the synaptics pointing device and the HP quick launch buttons listed. So is the IDT PC audio driver.  What am I missing? Where I can I find it to activate the touch volume control?

I am hoping someone on this forum can help me. I have a Thinkpad X60s, about a year old and I am running XP. Randomly my computer becomes sluggish so I try closing programs. I then figure out that one program is frozen (come to think of it, that program may always be IE) and I can't close it. I then try to warm boot with ALT CONTROL DELETE but it doesn't work. In fact, instead of getting the task manager, my screen saver comes up without any icons on my desktop. I have no cursor and can't do anything but unplug or take out battery and manually crash the computer. It then will start normally though it takes longer for the icons to appear.

I regularly download both IBM and Windows updates, I defrag regularly, do virus scans etc using Norton 360. I also have run Think Pad Productivity Center maintenance tasks.

Other than that and the slugglishness the computer runs ok.

Any help out there? I am frustrated and IBM has not been able to help, except by telling me to change the hard drive or send it to them.

A:Freeze, alt control delete doesn't work, lose all icons

Yes I think this is a hard drive issue too. Check to see how much space you have left on it. Go to My computer and right-click on the C drive icon. Click Properties... Also, you might consider checking the hard drive with a utility like Seatools from Seagate. IBM notebook drives are noted for their high failure rates...

Back up your important data please, ASAP

Good luck

Hello, I have a problem with connecting my SE K700i cell phone with Windows 7 notebook via bluetooth. I have paired them, file transfer is available, the problem is remote control (HID profile) - when trying to connect either desktop, presenter, kmplayer or any other, it always shows "Bluetooth connection failed. Hello all,

I'm dumbfounded on this one. Here's what I know...

I have Win7 Home Premium, and am using it on a Media Center PC. When I put the PC to sleep, sometimes it will wake up properly, sometimes it won't. When it does not wake up from sleep...I have to manually press the power button on the computer for it to turn on (as if the computer "shut down" rather then sleep), and during boot I receive the "windows did not shut down properly" screen with the 30 second count down to select if I want to start up normally, or try safe modes. This is KILLING my recordings and driving me insane.

It seems to be that it happens mostly when I leave the PC sit overnight and I do NOT try to check on it in the morning. In other words, use the PC at night, put it into sleep mode before I go to bed between 10pm and 11pm central, and leave it alone until it is supposed to wake up on it's own to record usually around 7pm or 8pm central. So it's in sleep for around 20-22 hours.

If I put it to sleep at night around 11pm central, and in the morning before I go to work I wake it up myself around 8am central, it wakes up. I then put it to sleep & go to work around 9am central, and come home and it's recording what it should between 7pm or 8pm central.

So there definitely seems to be a timing issue, but what? It sits too long and crashes while in sleep mode??? Why? If I leave the computer running all day, it works fine, and does not crash.

Interestingly enough, I a... Read more

However, sometimes when I open the lid to my laptop, it is temporarily unresponsive for a minute or so when resuming from sleep mode. It's pretty annoying. I think it has something to do with my USB settings because it only seems to do it when something is plugged in there. For example, thumb drive, external hard drive.

Anyone know what the issue could be? Thanks for your help.

can someone tell me why is it like this?

For anything that "just started" happening -- try a "System Restore" >Start > run: msconfig > Launch System Restore and choose a date prior to the problem

They can be undone if you like.

Most problems that SR does not fix are hardware related.

Hello, first post, need some help debugging a homebuilt system. Since built have had trouble with sleep/resume crashes. Tried updating drivers, several settings in device manager, and BIOS changes to no avail. In the end, I nuked the hard drive and did a complete re-install from the ground up. Seemed to go ok initially, but have again begun having crashes around the sleep/resume times. The computer is my wife's machine, built exclusively for photo editing. Win7 x64 Home Premium. Built Jan '11, last OS install about 2-3 months ago. Thanks so much for your help!

A:BSOD with sleep/resume

Welcome to SevenForums.

Your dump files indicate a hardware error, the system couldn't initialize the HAL (STOP 0x0000005C: HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED).
Usual causes: Hardware, file system, boot corruption.

Check the connections to your hard drive (both power and data), make sure that your PSU is powerful enough to drive everything in the system. Make sure that the cards inside the case are properly seated. If you've added things recently - remove them. Ensure your Windows Updates are up to date. Please scan for malware with Malwarebytes

Run those tests:
HDD Diagnostic: HD Diagnostic / Disk Check
Memory Diagnostic: RAM - Test with Memtest86+
System File Scan: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Post back with your results.

There were also a lot of unrecognized drivers which were being loaded on your system. This can either mean that you're using an old (possibly an incompatible [Chinese?] program/driver) or that the system has some Malware infection(s).

Hi everyone.

I had some trouble today with my computer. I seem to have fixed it, but thought I would share my experience to see if I can help others who may be having similar issues.

System Specifications

AMD FX-6300
4 GB 1333 mhz GSkill RAM
NVIDIA Geforce GT 630
320 GB HDD
600w Modular Ultra X3 Power supply
Thermaltake Versa H25 Gaming Case
Windows 10 PRO 10240

For 2 weeks or so I was having an issue where my system would not wake from sleep properly. Fans would spin and HDD would power up, but no video, or if video came on, it would be at the lock screen, and screen would shut off. Had to do a hard reset to get the computer to boot.

I had noticed as the computer tried to resume from sleep mode, the CPU LED would not blink, indicating that the CPU has reinitialized. Strange since that never happen before. Although I do remember I removed my CPU to test in another FX Board to see if the other board was DOA. It was and I reinstalled it in my system.

I decided to recheck everything today. "CPU, Memory, SATA Cables, etc." I reseated the memory, saw no change. Took the heatsink off of the CPU, which came off easy, and behold, I see a tiny gap, where my CPU was not fully seated. No bent pins. I'm surprised my system was even booting or running. I reinserted the CPU, fully seated it and put it back together, checked the SATA Cables, and found that one of my SATA Cables was slanted on my backup hard drive. Pu... Read more

A:Resume from sleep issue

I would say this has something to do with the drivers or the bios. my friend is having the same issue and i had it before i updated the bios.

if there is something to do with the bios you could check the motherboard manufactures website to see if there is an new update for the bios. These things can also come with windows updates and if the windows version is changing something in the power management it can also effect the bios in one way so there must be an update for the bios for this to be fixed.

Here is the link to the Asus page for bios and drivers: M5A99FX PRO R2.0 | Motherboards | ASUS USA

if there is anything in the OS that have changed i would consider you to either check some power option or try to reinstall a fresh version of windows to see if that would help.

I'm having some problems whenever i resume from sleep. Typically, I'll resume and I'll get a message stating that the display driver failed to respond and has recovered. Sometimes, I'll resume and get a black screen, so I'll reboot and then I'll get the BSOD pointing to nvlddmkm.sys I tried reverting to many different driver versions, but the problem still persists. Any insight on what might be happening and how to fix it would be appreciated.

Like this?

I know that the display driver version that you are using right now is the most stable one lately released, but I will suggest you to install the latest one, on a test basis.

Get the latest driver by following the option 2 here:; install it using the advanced mode. Dont install anything other than the "display driver" and "PhysX Software".

If you already tried that version too, then it would be better to test the situation with a replacement GPU.

I personally experienced the display driver failed to respond and has recovered issue, on my desktop. Similarly no driver version can make the situation better. I had no way other than replacing the GPU.

Did a wide research on it, and it appeared to be a hardware issue, provided multiple versions of the driver is giving the same result.

You may perform a stress test of the Graphics Card using Furmark.

But this issue is too occasional to be caught by furmark.

A:Can't resume from sleep (hardware?)

What graphics does the laptop use? Intel,Nvidia, etc

Look on the sticker on the bottom (Service Tag) and post the exact model number of the laptop.

Normally this issue can be narrowed down to the graphics driver.

Did you install the driver from the HP site or Nvidia or ATI/AMD site?

Since replacing my old HDD with a SSD, Windows will no longer resume from sleep (it hibernates just fine). It goes to sleep seemingly fine, but when it's time to wake up, the system appears to resume as expected, but the screen remains black. The system must then be shut down by holding the power button for 6 seconds and then restarted.

Sleep had worked fine with the HDD.

General specs:
Dell XPSM1330
2.2GHz Core2Duo T7500
4GB RAM (Corsair upgrade from original 2GB)
Kingston SNV425S264GB SSD (discontinued drive, attempted to find new drivers for it but was unable to)
Dell Bios A15 (latest BIOS I can find for it)

I recall reading something about this previously, but could not recall where, nor if it had been resolved.

I suppose I'm not expecting miracles, but I do miss sleeping. Hibernating takes as long as rebooting anyway. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

I'm hoping to get some help. About a month ago my pc started going to BSOD while trying to resume after being put to sleep. PC is 16 months old. I read the forums, etc and updated the ATI radeon display driver and the Realtek network driver but the problem persisted.

I also rolled back the system using restore to before the problem began but no change. I then reinstalled windows 7 64bit using the OEM CD rom and installed all the MS updates - no change. Last week, it occurred to me that it might be a monitor hw issue so I swapped out the monitor with another I had. That seemed to solve it - for 4 days - now it's doing the same thing with the second monitor.

I've attached the zipfile with the minidmp and perfmon.

Appreciate any insight - Bob

New install of windows 7 ultimate x64, reformat, old os was a linux variant
older hardware, dual core amd 4200, nvidia gt2 250, 2 gig ram
Besides the windows 7 drivers, I had to install a realtek ac 97 audio driver, which works.
I installed nvidia's latest drivers.

Computer seems to work when waking up, but it seems to me that the network is trying to reconnect over the LAN and when this doesn't happen the computer will prevent me from opening any other apps or click on anything. Then if I wait long enough, I will get the BSOD and the computer will reboot to a working environment. Very weird!!

A:BSOD on resume from sleep

I fixed this issue. here it is!

The MB I use is an old Abit ultra with the nforce 4 chipset. You guessed it, windows 7 drivers are the culprit. As soon I installed the legacy drivers from nvidia 15.23 the computer not only boots up faster but it goes to sleep and wakes up on command.

This should probably be sent to microsoft seeing as how it is their drivers that are at fault, but I assume they will do nothing about it since nvidia has even decided to depreciate nfroce 4 chipset. It is how they force you to upgrade your hardware to keep other companies in business.

I recently replaced my 320gb boot HDD with an Intel X-25 160gb SSD using the Intel migration tool. The system worked fine except the nVidia drivers don't support TRIM. So I tried the Intel SSD Toolbox which is supposed to manually send the TRIM command to the SSD. The tool box can see the SSD but the button to send the TRIM command is greyed out.

I did some reading and found some had success with this configuration by switching from the nVidia IDE/ATA drivers to the default Windows drivers. I did this and voila, the SSD Toolbox works and sends the TRIM command. But now I have a new problem.

Whenever the system recovers from sleep, my secondary HDD is missing. It doesn't show up in Disk Manager and rescanning the disks does not find it. The only way to get the HDD back is to reboot. The BIOS never has an issue seeing the disk and neither does Windows after boot. Only after sleep. I'm assuming this is because I'm not using the nVidia drivers.

Am I stuck choosing between a disappearing HDD and an SSD that will eventually fill w/ junk?

A:HDD Disappears on Resume from Sleep

Are you using AHCI drivers and is your second drive large?

You receive various Stop error messages in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 when you try to resume a computer that has a large SATA hard disk

In the case above it ends up with a stop because it is the system disk. disks other than the system just won't show up. I am pretty confident it is because your hard drive isn't spinning up fast enough. From the above it is apparent that if hard drive doesn't come up fast enough from sleep, windows will ignore it, even if you scan for hardware changes.

Anyhow, the above hotfix resolved my disappearing drive issue.

I am having a few different issues resuming from sleep. With (powercfg -h on), putting the computer to sleep and resuming from sleep takes 20 second to sleep, and 45 seconds to resume from sleep. This is extremely slow because with an SSD in my system, I can cold boot in less time than it takes to resume from sleep. With (powercfg -h off), putting the computer to sleep takes only about 2-5 seconds, but resuming from sleep will display a black screen with my mouse cursor, nothing else. I would prefer having hibernation disabled as the hyberfil.sys file on my system is 8gb, and with only a 60gb SSD, I need to conserve space. I have installed the most recent drivers for motherboard, sound card, video card, BIOS, etc. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Thanks in advance for your help.

Over the last week or so my system does not find the 3 spinner HDDs on resuming from sleep. My searching has not found a description of a similar issue. My system has 2 SSDs, (both single partition, the Intel 520 has w8.1 and all apps, the other SSD has W10TP) 3 HDDs, and 2 optical drives. On resume from sleep the 3 HDDs are missing, a reboot finds them again, and all is well till I put the system in sleep mode.
I am now not certain just when this issue began, I installed all the applicable November patch Tuesday updates, and the 2 out-of-band updates issued a week later. I also updated the Windows 10 Technical Preview when that was issued. The Windows 10 install is on a (single partition) separate SSD.
This issue also is present on resuming after sleep when running the Windows 10 TP.
I did not disconnect the other drives when updating W10. Could that be the culprit?
Motherboard is an ASUS P8Z77-V. I have reset the BIOS to "Optimized Defaults" - no change to this issue. All drives are visible in the BIOS screens, and on the Post screen.
My most recent image is nearly 2 months old (yes, I know I should image more frequently, but have been away.) So I'd like to find a fix to this issue without reverting that far back, if possible.
All suggestions appreciated. TIA

Have you tried disabling both Hibernation and Sleep in Power Options to see if that's where the problem lies? I find both features to be more problematic than they are worth, prefer the screen saver setting to blank the screen and the Windows key plus L to lock the screen.

Hi, I have run into an issue with a Pavilion g60-230us laptop that I can't seem to resolve. After going to sleep or closing the lid, when I open the lid again the laptop wakes up, but the display never resumes. I can see it kind of try to come on, but nothing ever shows on the screen. I am currently on Windows 8.1 Pro. The system is 32 bit and not running a separate display adapter, just the integrated Intel configuration. I have tried downloading the latest Windows 7 driver from the HP support page for the g60 but it didn't help. They don't offer drivers for Windows 8 on this model. I have also deleted the display in device manager, rebooted and let Windows find and install its own driver, but this also didn't help. Keyboard and mouse both have the box checked for allow this device to wake the computer in the power settings.

I'm hoping someone has run into and resolved this issue and has an answer.

My x230 has developed problems sleeping and resuming from sleep. These problems are new and remain after a clean install, so I think it may be a hardware issue. Symptoms: 1) Laptop doesn't sleep properly. I notice this because of the battery drain, even though the "sleep" led is on 2) Laptop doesn't wake. The power led blinks, but pressing it has no effect.  I have to press and hold the power button to force a hard off, then press it again to turn on. Like I said I've never had these problems in the many years I've had this laptop, so I assume some hardware part has failed. The question is which?

A:x230 - Does not resume from sleep

I have the same problem with my 1 yr old X1 Carbon Thinkpad. It seems like the computer is on, but the screen is blank. The only option I have at that point is a "hard reboot."

Hi there.

My computer runs Vista SP1, and has always (from new) had sporadic issues sleeping/hibernating and resuming.

The success rate of resuming from sleep or hibernate is about 40%. I know that sometimes it just doesn't work, but this is FAR lower than on my old laptop.

I've run full virus scans etc. Avast is my current antivirus. I've used Glary Utilities and IOBit Windows Care to check for problems. I've got the startup entries down as low as they can go. Here's a current list:

- Apoint (laptop touchpad utility)
- RtHDVCpl.exe (laptop built in sound driver)
- ISBMgr.exe (something Sony related I'm told is important).
- Carbonite Backup (a subscription backup service).
- Avast.
- Bluetooth.

I've recently disabled a few other things in the hope that they might be responsible. Sadly, it's looking like the solution isn't going to be that simple.

Any ideas?

A:Sleep resume problems

This may fix it.

Go in control panel topower options and click "change plan settings" under the selected power setting then click "Change Advanced Power Settings" expand "sleep" and then click on "hybrid sleep" and turn it off.

This is a wide known issue with Vista, however it usually works if it wil never wake from sleep.

I have been unsing sleep with XP and Vista for years now. Typically it took about a second or 2 to resume. The longest thing was to wait for it to resume the wired ethernet connection. Maybe a couple more seconds.

Now with Windows 7 it takes quite a while. I have not timed it yet, but I can actually boot my shutdown PC faster than resume from sleep. My PC has one of those motherboards that has speed booting.

The odd thing on sleep is I get this pale blue (I am color blind) with words something like Resuming from hibernation. Then goes to a black screen with the animated windows icon with test below stating resuming Windows.

I kid you not, I can do a cold boot and get to use my PC sooner.

Can someone help me fix sleep?

Only happens when I try to wake the computer from sleep. Already tried video card's beta driver, current driver, previous drivers but to no avail. Remove video card and use on-board video instead seems to fix the problem. But it's very slow coming out of sleep (took at least 10 seconds or more). Really wanted to use the video card instead of on board video. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A:BSOD resume from sleep

BSOD's blame video - both the onboard and the video card.

I suspect your DeathAdder mouse as it's drivers date from 2007 - and these drivers are known to cause BSOD's in Windows systems.
Remove the DeathAdder software and physically remove the mouse from your system to test.
If that's the cause, then try more updated DeathAdder drivers that are compatible with Win8.

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

I am having problems with my Win7 PC which is periodically slow to resume from sleep, it will either:

1. take about 30 secs to go from password screen to show desktop
2.Go straight to normal screen of app that was open and allow typing etc. there but for about 30 secs is slow to open new programs or open for example Control Panel.
3.Get back from sleep in a few seconds and function normally.

I have checked "view performance details in the event log" and see a few things but nothing seems to correspond with 30 seconds of slow response. I do get errors corresponding to a USB driver, but they seem to only occur if I have something plugged into the USB hub ports on my Apple Cinema Display. It goes away if I use a port on the PC itself.

See if this finds anything new for you.
Intel? Driver Update Utility

This could help stabilize the usb problem possibly.
IT would seem a older driver is getting in the way. That's my first guess anyhow.

Here is something else you can do that may help prevent usb faults.

To Disable Selective Suspend:

open the control panel
go to power options (you may have to set view to small icons)
click change plan settings
in the window that opens:
click change plan settings
click change advanced power settings, expand usb and ensure usb selective suspend is disabled.
(I do this on all my systems, the feature seems to cause more problems than anything.)

1.      Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, and then, under System, clicking Device Manager.‌  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
2.      In the list of hardware categories, find the device that you want to prevent from waking your computer, and then double-click the device name.
3.      Click the Power Management tab and then clear the Allow this device to wake the computer check box.
4.      Click OK.

My Win7 Ultimate desktop PC was working fine but in the last few days has developed a problem where the internal PCI wireless network card (Realtek 8185-based) will not restart after sleep mode. When I enter Device Manager it is not listed, but if I "Scan for hardware changes" it gets found and reinstalled so that it's working again.

Any suggestions on how I can get this back to working normally? Thanks.

From MS, about Vista. Since 7 is essentially Vista, under the hood, this would apply to you to. Maybe not the definitive solution, but a clear road on where to look.

I see this is a farely common problem with Windows 7, but there seems to be many different causes. I downloaded and installed all the latest Hotfixes I could find on it and my hard drive is not over 1TB which could be a cause. I would like to get this fixed as soon as possible so I don't keep losing all my work everytime I take a break from the computer. I have included an attachment with all the requested Dump files and system reports.

Please e-mail me if possible with any additional questions.

Thank you for the help and your time.
