Creative Console launcher "What U Hear" setting & GuitarFX 3 mega-feedback problem

Q: Creative Console launcher "What U Hear" setting & GuitarFX 3 mega-feedback problem

Hi, I have a Creative X-Fi Gamer, I'm using it to try & record myself playing guitar using GuitarFX. If I just use the Creative Console Launcher's "Microphone" setting combined with GuitarFX everything is fine (the effects in GuitarFX sound how they should) but if I select "What U Hear" In the Creative Console Launcher I get far to much sound coming through my speakers most of the time (some preset effects settings in GuitarFX are usable but most are wrecked), the sound bars in guitarFX go off the scale, it's like mega feedback. Just a constant screech or drone & doing anything on the guitar makes no difference. I've even tried it without my guitar plugged into the PC & the same thing happens.
I'm using the Creative Console Launcher's record function to record some guitar, all I'm interested in is some way for me to record the effects GuitarFX creates for my guitar as I hear them through my speakers when I have the Creative Console Launcher's setting in the "Microphone" position? ie GuitarFX sounding as it should. I'd rather find some way to record the guitar onto my PC rather than go through the hassle of plugging something into speakers jack to record it there.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

You may have to use a preamp between the guitar and the PC

A while back, I installed Creative MediaSource on my old PC, and could do "What U Hear" recording (recording exactly what would come out of the speakers). Now, I have installed CMS on my new PC (from the SAME disk), and I can't do "What U Hear" Recording. What gives? Can someone help me to do "What U hear" recording on my new computer?

Hi Kenmcfa

In case it's just a small detail you might have missed in the setup, here are some guides and question-and-answer pages from Creative -- in case you haven't seen these yet.

Otherwise, I guess we'll have to wait for a user or tech who has experience with your program [I'm more familiar with Pro Tools on the Mac (my brother-in-law is a recording engineer) - so this is the first I've heard of Creative's program. . . . Looks pretty useful, from the info on their site]

Best of luck

Hi, I have upgraded my XP to Windows 7 32bit. I have been trying to record from the net using a Rocketfish 7.1 sound board, but it will not allow to setup my source as What U Hear. I have tried to use the instructions by Corpsecrank written in 2009. My windows do not display the Disable Devices or Disconnected Devices. Is there something missing from Rocketfish install? Is there some additional later information for Windows 7 sound setup. It does display Rocketfish 7.1 Microphone, Line In, Auxiliary and my Webcam.

Did you remember to install the driver for it?

The one they have is for Vista but it should work in Windows 7 no problem.

Hello, I'm using Windows XP SP3 and creative console launcher v2.30.32. My sound card is Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio.

I have a problem with this application (creative console launcher v2.30.32) because I have to restart settings on each start up, means creative console launcher seems can't save my settings. For example: I have set the speaker setting to headphones mode and disable CMSS3D, and then it runs well, but after I restart my computer, the setting back to default(2.2 1 speaker, CMSS3D enabled) instead of my settings.

Why this problem occurred? Do you have any solution to this problem so I don't need to always set again the speaker settings on each Windows start up?
Thank you. I hope there is a solution to this problem.

A:Solved: Creative Console Launcher Can't Save Settings After Reboot

sounds like your application has become corrupted. i'd uninstall it, then reinstall it & then apply any relevant updates from creative's website.

After a catastrophic computer failure, I managed to recover almost everything. However upon booting up I got the message "BOOTMGR is missing". I used the original Windows installation disk to do Startup Repair, which recovered BOOTMGR. However now every time I boot up I get a message from Windows Boot Manager asking me to choose between "Windows 7...(recovered)" and "Microsoft WIndows Recovery Console". How can I get the computer to boot straight into Windows 7?

I need to programmatically make some adjustments to the Internet Explorer security settings. Most of these settings I have found but there are a few I have not been able to get a clear exact location for in the registry. I will be using a .BAT file to make
the adjustments on 100+ PCs.

Here is what I am looking for.....

Under the "Internet  Properties" found in control panel, under the "Privacy" tab there is an "Advanced" option button. When I click on it I get an "Advance Privacy Settings" options box. On it are several settings.
The first setting, "Override automatic cookie handling" needs to be checked in order to access the other options. I can do that by adjusting the DWord value of "PrivacyAdvanced" under the "Internet Settings" key in the registry,
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet settings", to be specific.

What I have not been able to find are the registry entries for the "First-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, the "Third-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, and the "Always allow
session cookies" check box. Please see picture below....

I just installed Windows 7 Premium Home Edition thinking that perhaps it would eliminate this issue I've been having (I had XP) but it didn't so I'm desperately seeking help.

I have a home built PC (mostly by a friend of mine that knows a lot more than I do about computers). The front USB ports work with some items all the time (one of my thumb drives, my scanner) but other items that I plug into them (another external hard drive, my digital camera) lock the entire system. This correlates with my DVD drive vanishing (it's there occasionally and when it is the USB ports work - when it's not there they don't work). The USB ports in the back of the system work fine and are no issue whatsoever. If I reboot enough the device will show up but usually they are not there and after using them they vanish or lock the system again.

The only thing I can come up with is in my device manager I have an item called "Mega Byte" which shows as unknown across the board (unknown manufacturer, category, etc) and offers no drivers (even using the disc that came with the motherboard). I believe this is my issue but I can't find anything on the internet about this device.

AMD Phenom 9950 2.6 Ghz Quad Core processor

Hi all

So I want to restore my computer to its factory settings because it is giving me a few annoying problems that I would like to get rid of. I go through the steps (given here), but I get stuck once I get to the step right before the system is about to be restored. I get an error message that just says "the parameter is incorrect". It doesn't give an error code. From here I have to do a hard shutdown of my computer.

I tried calling dell but since I'm out of warranty they want to charge me ~100 bucks to get this fixed. That seems way too high for me, especially for this problem given my budget. I did get some info from the tech guy though he said":

1- The recovery files may be corrupt, possible due to a virus (this could just be a scare tactic)
2- will have to use windows 7 re-installation cd if the files are indeed corrput

That's about all I got from him. I have the windows 7 cd that came with the comp and 2 other cds that have the drivers. The computer itself is a Dell insprion 560.

So basically does anyone know what my options are? Is there anyway to get around the parameter is incorrect problem or will I have to restore the computer another way?

Any help would be really appreciated!!

A:Problem restoring to factory setting, "the parameter is incorrect".

There is probably a way round that.

If somebody posts a screenie of their similar Dell recov partition , we wlll be able to see.

A:US Robotics Modem configuration setting problem "not set to dial-up"

Need to clean up some English along with that adware! I can barely tell what your problem is.

So you are in AL, and you bought a modem in your Walmart for someone in FL? Did you mail it to them or something?
What do you mean you set up your "IP" on her computer? You mean your "ISP" as in your provider?

Anyhoo, are you sure the driver is in properly from the CD? Check Device Manager.
And because it is a new modem, you may have to uninstall the ISP software and reload it for it to see the new modem properly.

Otherwise, could you clarify exactly what happened and what errors you get and what software you use, what version of Windows, and any other data you can share.

I tried to clean-up my PC a year ago and ever since then I get two error messages every time on start-up.

1. "Error starting Autosync Launcher. Autosync Launcher could not be launched. Please make sure that Autosync Launcher was properly installed and try again". I have no idea what this is. Please help!

2. "AppleSyncNotifier.exe - unable to locate component. This application has failed to start because CoreFoundation.dll was no found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem". I have no idea what this is or how to fix it. Is there a simple way to get CoreFoundation.dll back on the computer? I tried to do it myself online with a free download but nothing seemed to happen as I still get the error message every time on start-up.

Both these error messages have been going on for about a year now so I'm reluctant to do a system restore going back that far as I'm not sure what other programs I might lose that I've loaded up since then. The system I'm using is Windows XP. Any help on either or both of the above would be much appreciated.

I'm trying to clean up a friend's computer and hoping to avoid a complete wipe the HDD, start from scratch. I ran AVG & Spybot and removed a bunch of trojans, but now I'm getting the message: "Windows XP must restart because DCOM server process launcher service terminated..."

I was able to stop the countdown timer using Start/Run, "shutdown -a", enter. But there is still a lingering critter that needs to be exterminated.

Another error window popping up sporadically: "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close."

They install fine and show up in the "Sound/RecordingDevices" menu in Contro Panel/Settings ... and on all the programmes I'm using: Skype, Cubase etc. but no sound. And these devices work on other laptops, just not this one.

Does anyone have any ideas on what's going on and how to fix it, please?

I realize the title happens frequently in general. I myself have had to go in and restore the device countless times on reboot. That's not the issue (default device, device enabled, etc).

For some mysterious reason, my What U Hear is malfunctioning and picking up absolutely nothing as of last night's reboot. Prior to this for the last few years since being on Win 7, I've had no issues (other than the common restore the default, enable it, etc).

So what might have changed?
1. I had a power outage mid day yesterday. I'm pretty sure I didn't attempt to use my What U Hear after this outage, but DID use it just prior to the outage (but was not recording or anything when the outage hit, but SF 9.0 was open)
2. I have gone into the BIOS and disabled HD Audio (since my MOBO has onboard)... I really thought this second one was going to fix my problem, but no.

When I go to check my devices in the audio pop-up, it shows my speakers as the default playback device and the oscillator goes as I play something. When I look at the recording tab, with the What U hear device enabled & defaulted, the oscillator just sits there dead. When I go to properties and either select "default playback device" OR select my external speakers (both of which should be the speakers, WHICH DO oscillate and work just fine) it doesn't matter... What U Hear still does not pick anything up!!!

Any ideas?

I'm sort of frustrated here and am out of ideas.
Thanks!

A:Stereo Mixer "What U Hear" Suddenly Stopped Working

Two general ideas:

Try a system restore to a point in time before you had issues--before the power outage issue.

Uninstall audio drivers/sound card, reboot, and reinstall audio drivers.

Either might work.

It's at least possible that you had hardware damage due to the power outage.

Stereo mix is shaky on Windows 7 as I am sure you know.

Driving me crazy. I've used Spybot, Malwarebytes, Windows Defender, AVG, and have updated Vista. Nothing. Computer is very slow. Believe it's related to iexplore.exe running anywhere from 4-12 times in the background all at various usage, range is 30k to 200k. I also hear ads like "Lipton Chicken Soup, Delicious!" and "Congratulations, You Won!".

I've read forums related multiple iexplore.exe 's running in the background, and several recommend something called ComboFix. I haven't gone that far since there are other things techs recommend that I do not understand with out instructions.

Logs below.

Also, perhaps a separate issue(?), I get BSoD during every startup and post-update reboot. Once the dump occurs, it then reverts to a black screen that has a blinking cursor with two choices: Start in SafeMode / Start Normally. In either case, I get BSoD. However, I've learned that during this black screen I can push the power button to run the boot cycle again, and after 5-10 times, it starts. If I choose Start SafeMode or Start Normally, it never reboots. It just BSoD over and over. Now I just keep the thing on 24/7 until critical updates, then fight to reboot it over a coffee and much patience. Not sure if it's related to the above .exe problem, but thought I'd share. Thanks for reading this. I appreciate your hard work.

For the record, I don't have "Fast Startup" enabled in the Control Panel.

I hear the "critical stop" error sound almost every time I shut down my computer. After I click "shutdown" in the start menu, I see the words "Shutting down" followed by the error sound. Very annoying.

Hi,

I have 2 systems and the other is listed in my profile so here are this system's specs.

Intel e7200 cpu
Gigabyte EP43-UD3L Motherboard
4 gigs of ram
OCZ 120 gigabiyte SSD for OS
Seagate 1TB 7200rpm storage drive
Nvidia 9800 GT
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
Windows 7 64 bit

I just upgraded this system with a new SSD and a clean install from Windows XP 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit. I do a lot of audio recording with this system. I use Sony Sound Forge 9 and Sony Vegas 10 for recording editing and CD production. I have always kept my computer recording settings at "What you hear" so that I can record multiple sounds from the line in with a turntable and the computer simultaneously. This has always worked flawlessly with XP.

After installing windows 7 and the latest drivers from Creative I set things up with "What You Hear" and at first things seemed all right. But then I went to record something in Sound Forge and I could not get the volume above -12 db. I also noticed that if I was playing a song in iTunes and stopped it there was a reverb or echo that faded after I hit stop.

I tried reinstalling the drivers. No help. Then I turned off "what you hear" and the echo was no longer there but the volume was still low.

Is this a Creative driver problem? Or is this possibly some other conflict that I can't seem to find? I am looking for other new cards that may be more compatable with windows 7 like the Asus Xonar DSX which is in my pr... Read more

I have a Sonar (X2 Version) studio. I don't use my PC's sound card (or a SoundBlaster) for recording, I have a Roland Octa-Capture and an MAudio Fastrack Ultra 8R that I use with Sonar (and I also have Pro Tools MP9 that I can use the Fastrack Ultra 8R with).

Do you have any "Sound Enhancements" enabled in the Creative/SoundBlaster options?

Also, sounds like some type of "audio return" (output back to input) that could be causing this. Some sound features are handled differently in Vista/Win 7. Try disabling the other recording devices (e.g. mic, line in) one at a time in the Sound Panel/Recording section to see if it makes any difference.

One other thought. Since you are using a separate sound card, The Realtek integrated (on the motheboard) audio must be disabled in the BIOS.

Finally, if you have installed EasyTune, uninstall it. My new recording system is using a Gigabyte Z77X UD5H motherboard and when I installed the Gigabyte drivers I also installed the EasyTune. I was getting some pops in Sonar when recording, I ran the DPC Latency Checker and it showed large Latency spikes. Thanks to a custom recording studio PC builder who knew about EasyTune causing this problem, he advised me to uninstall it. That fixed my clicks and latency problem.

I have scoured the internet for a solution to this and have found nothing.

First my dxdiag is attached. I have had this issue for over a year now and I am getting fed up.

If I put my ear to my pc, I can hear computer noises coming from it. I can not compare it to another sound, as there is nothing else to compare it too... it just sounds like my CPU or Hard Drive... thinking...

That doesnt bother me though, I expect my computer to make ...some... noise... HOWEVER.. I dont expect to hear it in my speakers too.

I have a lot of speakers... and a lot of headphones.. no they are not the problem.

Right now I am using a knappenberger tube hooked up to a GK MB200, just cuz I can.

When I plug in any speakers I can hear the CPU sound through them regardless of the volume level. I can turn the speaker all the way down... and yet the sound will come through. This leads me to believe it is a grounding issue or electrical to some degree. I would like to try physically grounding my case, to see if it would eliminate this God awful feedback. However I can not find a guide as to the best way to do this, or any other suggestions. So here I am. Help me and earn my eternal gratitude!

Some notes.
If I unplug all of my cables except power and the speaker cable, I still hear it.
if I plug in my speaker cable to my monitor, instead of my PC, I still hear it.
Front port, still hear it.

I have yet to try a different sound card, as I dont have one. Once I find one, I will update.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Hi. I've had a CMI9739A onboard sound card for a while, and it has always worked fine. Now, suddenly I am hearing odd sounds from it. The sound is somewhat like sand being shaken in a bottle, and it comes in a pattern. Three sounds, pause, three sounds, pause, etc. I have tried turning off and relocating electronics, but nothing seems to be causing this odd feedback. I plugged headphones into the sound card and heard the sound, so I know it is not the speakers. Any ideas what it might be? It's very disruptive, and I'd like to solve this without getting a new sound card if possible. Thanks!

Bluetooth particularly can be such a pain in the you-know-what that it deserves its own panel.

Hello.

Yesterday, I had to perform a new installation of Windows XP because I somehow corrupted some system files beyond repair. Now I have everything up and running anew and have made all the Windows updates and it's all honky dory. However, I just went to the Disk Managent Console with the intention of re-assigning drive letter for my storage partitions (not the one that contains Windows) and ran into a problem.

I have a partition set up on my main hard disk to use exclusively for Window's pagefile. I have not yet set up Windows to put the pagefile there. This is the next partition after the primary partition that contains the OS. I wanted to set the drive letter of this partition to Z: to get it out of the way in Windows Explorer. However, the partitions shows as:
Healthy (System)
whereas the main Windows partition shows as:
Healtyh (Boot)

This is really weird because in the past, only the Windows partition would show up as (System). I'm afraid I might have somehow screwed up during the Windows installation.
Does anybody know why this is ocurring and any possible solutions that do not include re-installing Windows?

If it's any help, when I set Windows Explorer to show all files here are the files that are on that partition:
RECYCLER (folder)
System Volume Information (folder)
boot.ini
NTDETECT.COM
ntldr

Thank you.

Very recently, I switched to Windows 7, with the hardware listed in my profile System Spec.

A few times, the "Action Center" has alerted me to a problem with a "Creative Gameport" device not having a driver. In Device Manager, it shows up as a "PCI device" without a driver.

My research suggests that this is a fairly common issue for those using somewhat older Creative sound cards. Apparently, there is no driver for the device; Creative/MS simply dropped support for the gameport device with Windows 7. Some writers were quite irate, as they really wanted to use their gameport in Windows 7.

Thing is, my Audigy 2 ZS doesn't actually have a gameport. I'm pretty sure I know what a gameport would look like, because I previously owned the older SoundBlaster cards that definitely had the old-school, multi-pin joystick connectors (SB Pro, SB AWE 32).

That isn't the case with the Audigy 2 ZS. There simply is no physical connector for a joystick, aka "gameport." All I have are the various 1/8" audio jacks and a FireWire connector (probably for some add-on device I didn't buy).

So what's the deal here?

It's of largely academic interest at this point. W7's Action Center used to bug me about finding a driver for the "Creative Gameport," but I think it finally gave up. I'm still curious why W7 thinks there's a device there that isn't.

A:The mysterious "Creative Gameport" device, again

Your sound card may contain a connector to add a creative game port, my old Audigy 2 had a separate game port slot so the card could take up two PCI slots or you could take it out.

Hello, and thank you in advance for any help you may be able to offer,

I've just put my new computer together, and after having quite a few headaches getting my OS / Drivers working (Finally got the system bootable and stable and drivers working, etc.) I discovered a new problem:

My event viewer had a ton of disk error 7's:
"The device, \0\Device\HardDisk0\[?] has a bad block"
(This is probably due to all the brute-force resets and shut-downs I had to do during all the headaches of getting everything working.)

I'm using Windows XP x64, and even though my system was stable I wanted to try to fix that "bad block" before the disk got too populated, and/or it started causing more problems, or god forbid, failing altogether.

I booted into the "Recovery Console" and ran "chkdsk c: /r" hoping to repair the bad sector. (I have never run chkdsk through the recovery console before.)

Here is my question:

After hitting [enter] on the command, I got only this:
"Volume created on 7/[?]/2010
The volume Serial number is: xxxxx-xxxx"
And nothing else. So, should I be seeing any progress report? Should I be seeing "60% checked, scanning..." or anything like that? Or does chkdsk just run without giving you any info whatsoever?
Now I'm worried. I know killing power during a chkdsk can potentially destroy a drive, so I've left the comp alone for a while (probably over an hour by now) and there is still ... Read more

When previously on WIN 7 Pro 64 bit I was able to record with Audacity what ever was coming out the speakers using the "What U Hear" feature of my sound card (Creative PCIe X-Fi Titanium).

Having upgraded and subsequently a clean install of WIN 10 Pro 64 bit this no longer works. I have downloaded the latest Creative driver for the sound card (which shows correctly in Device Manager) right clicking the sound icon in System Tray and selecting "What U Hear" as default recording device same within Audacity itself.

I have noticed that within Control Panel - Devices and Printers that "What U Hear" actually shows up as a device and I don't recall this being the case with WIN 7. If I right click on this icon - Properties - Hardware - Properties - Driver it shows as a Windows Driver rather than Creative. Could this be the problem.

Hi Folks:

I'm completely frustrated with my Audigy SE Sound Blaster Card from Creative. I've read many posts and still can't find or get my sound card to record.

Under "recording devices": I do not have 'What U Hear' or 'Stereo Mix' even if I right-click the white space and ask the system to show all devices.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium Edition.

Any suggestions or am I looking at purchasing another item for Win7.

Hi, my first thread here. I have searched many forums and webpages looking for a solution for my problem.
I just bought a Sony Vaio VGN-NW26M Laptop for Recording Music and Video Editing. My audio card says its a RealTek High definition. I just can't seem to find any Line-In or Audio Mix.

I have tried checking the show disabled devices but all it shows it the microphone. I have tried updating the audio driver but windows 7 says I have the latest driver.

Would I need to go to the RealTek website and download a driver update or something?? So these hidden things can appear and if so there are so many updates there, which one

A:Windows 7 Can't record "What you Hear"

You can try going to Realtek and looking for new drivers.

But don't get your hopes up.

This forum has many posts from people who can't get "what you hear" going on Windows 7. Sometimes, you can get it going with Vista drivers in compatibility mode. Sometimes you can find a hacked driver. Sometimes you can struggle on your own for 20 hours and eventually stumble into a working solution.

Sometimes you will fail.

It appears to be a deliberate bit of cooperation between Microsoft and sound vendors to foil attempts at recording "what you hear"--probably out of copyright concerns.

Your ultimate alternative: buy another sound card that is KNOWN not to have this limitation in Windows 7. There are a few out there. That might be a problem with a laptop. Maybe an external USB sound card might work for you?

In the meantime, pound this forum for "Realtek" as a search term and you might find a solution. I have both Creative Labs (standalone card) and IDT/Sigmatel (onboard sound) and eventually got the onboard sound to provide "what you hear" capability---but I pulled out a lot of my hair in the process.

I'm fairly up to speed on windows sound mixing and i have set what you hear to default recording device. I've reinstalled the sound card driver and tried different ones, updated the mobo sound chipset, made sure the Mobo's built in audio is disabled in bios. Can't think of what else but i've tried a alot and read a lot about the issue in a google search including several threads on the subject here. The issue is no audio is reaching what you hear because when i play any sound and have the recording devices open, the meter next to what u hears isn't showing signal and in fact it looks greyed out. The meter next to speakers on the playback page does show signal in it's meter.

I don't know what could have happened since it last worked, but this is really driving me crazy because i have a important project i need to work on and have little time before the deadline, and what you hear is necassary to be able to work on it.

Will simply connecting Line out/Spkr to Line in work? I would like to use a splitter so speakers still work or will this create a feedback loop?

In Windows the recording inputs available are Digital in and Microphone. I guess I would need to switch to Microphone in Win as default recording source.

Hi,
I'm having an issue where when attempting to create a local port, on a remote PC via the Print Management Console in Windows 7, I get an "Access Denied" error message.

All machines are domain joined.Tried with W10 and Server 2008 R2, too - same issue.Firewall (all three states) off.AV solution completely removed.Tried with highest domain admin account.Tried with UAC turned off and on.Ran as admin when launching console.GP - Point and Print Restrictions - Disabled.GP - Allow Print Spooler to accept client connections - Enabled.Print and File Sharing - On.Network Sharing - On.
To clarify, it is simply creating the port element that fails.

Can create TCP/IP ports OK.Can create Local Ports on the local machine OK - just not on remote machines. Can install printer if an existing local port is used, so drivers install OK.Using PowerShell, can use the Add Printer Port command to add the local port, no problems there.
It just seems to be an issue where the console attempts to verify if the said port exists, that the issue occurs.  If a put in an invalid port name in, it will bring up the correct response of "the network name cannot be found".
Cheers!

I have Sound Blaster Audigy and I didn't know how to activate the 5.1 at first and what I had to do was go to the Audigy HQ in the Creative Folder in the Start -> Programs menu and had to set it to 5.1 in the speaker settings. If all else fails, double check your connections at the back and see if you reversed any of it and what not. Hope this helps!

I recently bought an Averatec laptop which, surprisingly, has been pretty dependable. Recently, however, I've been experiencing a problem where, from time to time, when I power up or reboot the computer, it boots into the Phoenix cME Console Launcher, rather than Windows. However, from there, I am able to load windows without a hitch via the "continue to load windows" button. I called Averatec and, of course, they had no idea what I was talking about, had no similar reports, and couldn't offer much of a solution. They basically said the only way this could happen was if I was holding F4 down while I was booting, but I wasn't. The supervisor was no help, either. Eventually they had me download a patch that MIGHT help. The instructions were to download the file and then run it form the desktop, at which point I would be instructed to burn the program onto a CD and then run it from there. I tried this several times and it would NOT burn to the CD. I tried burning a different CD from a different app and it worked fine, so it isn't the burner. My fear is that there is either something corrupted in Windows or that it might be an issue with the HD itself. I got a great deal on the laptop and just as soon keep it, but I do have the option of returning it to Sam's Club (6 mo. return policy). Does anyone have any suggestions what might be going on, what I can do about it, or whether it's an omen that I should return the laptop? I'd greatly a... Read more

Hey folks, newbie to the forum here...hope someone can help. My problem is two-fold:

1st, while in Mexico on a business trip my laptop running "XP-Home" crashed giving me the following error on startup:

"Windows could not start becase the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-Rom select "r" at the first screen to start repair."

Our local techie (in Mexico) decided to fix this problem using a "XP-Professional" CD-Rom which is all that he had available.

it worked, except then during the windows boot routine, the following error flashes on the screen, and then the computer re-starts automatically:

"System error: Lsass.exe
When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct."

According to Microsoft, the fix for this is here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

No problem so far. However, when I try to Login to the Recovery Console, now I get:

"The password is not valid. Please retype the password.
Type the administrator password: "

I AM TYPING THE CORRECT PASSWORD.

So now, MS says the fix for this problem is here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308402

I followed these instructions, but continue to get the invalid password message...I'm at a loss...any ideas???

Thanks,

Paul

A:"access is denied" in MS recovery console

You might have to remove the hard drive from this computer and install it in another computer as a slave drive and after it is able to be accessed by Windows on that computer you will have to manually backup all of your important data that you have to another media like CD-R's, DVD or Thumb drive. Then when this is done return it to the original computer as a master drive on the primary IDE cable and do the following:

REGISTRY WARNING: The details that follow require an above-average understanding of the technical topics involved. If you do not understand the Registry material presented here, either find a technically-knowledgeable friend or do not attempt to repair your system Registry yourself. Improper changes in the System Registry can render all data on your hard disk inaccessible.

I hope you have the Windows software for this machine. Please give this a try and print it out for reference

Greetings all. I accidentally saved data to the "D" partition on my hard drive, the designated recovery console, and now it's 100% full. Now each time I boot up the computer there is an indicator in the toolbar that says "disk space low on disk :D:". I have a recovery CD so I don't really need the recovery console on my hard drive, if Windows crashes I'll just boot it up off the CD. Right now I want to eliminate this toolbar warning on start up. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe deleting the overcapacity area is the best option. If anyone could give me some assistance on how to eliminate the "D" partition I'd appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

- Joyce

PS: It gives me options for "disk clean up" but it wants me to delete programs and files that are saved on the "C" partition so Vista's tool is little help.

A:How can I delete the recovery console and/or the "D" partition?

Hi Joyce. . .

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

If you are the one that saved the data then you should be able to go into drive d: and delete those items. If the free space suddenly disappeared, it may be due to an incorrect setting in Windows System Restore.

Have you tried to access drive d: in Windows Explorer?

Also, please make sure that drive d: is not being backed up by System Restore (drive d: should not be checked). Here are instructions and a screen shot:

START | type rstrui.exe in the Start Search box | right-click on rstrui.exe when it appears up top | select Run as Administrator | proceed through the screens - "Create a Restore Point".

If you have any questions, please let me know.

After reinstalling but a few of my previously installed apps and programs, I found several malfunctions--regrettably, I cannot recall the nature of these malfunctions. After piddling around with them (the malfunctions) for several days without success, I tried to solve the problem by running sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt, After two days of constant failure which consistently ended with the error message: ?You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility?. Hi all,

Last week my Windows (XP Pro SP2, legit. install etc.) stoped working. When I try to boot it says that Windows canno't start because of a file found in SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM or something like that.

After reading plenty at Microsoft FAQ, and because I don't have my install disc anymore, I decided I should give a try for the Recovery Console.

So I got an original WinXP Home disc from a friend of mine (don't worry, i'm just using it to get access to the Recovery Console, I have my own licence), and started Recovery Console.

The problem is that every command I write I get "Access Denied".
What's the problem damnit and how I fix it?

Best regards,
Roi.

Hey everyone,

I am having a problem with a Windows XP machine I have. One time I tried starting it up, and I randomly get this error message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Well, I looked it up on Google and found a solution at http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/restorehaldll.htm. So I go ahead and follow that process.

So all the drivers load up and I am asked if I want to Continue (press Enter), Windows Recovery (press R), or Quit (press F3).

I want to get into the Windows Recovery Console, so I press "R". Nothing happens. Then I try pressing Enter. Nothing happens. Then, just for kicks, I try pressing F3. Still nothing.

I have tried multiple keyboards! It's not like the keyboard is off either. The "Num Lock" greenlight is still lit, and if I press a key it still makes "beep" sound.

Any ideas? This is really bugging me!

Hey folks,

My first post on here but I'm in serious trouble. I got a "new" (to me anyway) desktop running XP today and found the audio hardware wasn't working. So I pillaged an old machine for its sound card, and inserted that onto the motherboard. Also connected the Aux and CD lines to the top of the daughterboard.

Since then, to my horror, the machine has failed to boot. All plugged in, keyboard working, screen on and being used on another box for this very post. All I get now is the usual chirps from the internal soundcard followed by a few very low notes, definitely depressing so I guess they're suggesting something's failed. There's no further action from the CPU, the fan still works, but there is no screen output whatever.

Have I fried the motherboard without realising?!

Also, ironically, the last failure tone was delivered by my speakers through the originally non-responsive audio hardware!

I'd love a bit of help on this one, because my knowledge of computers' insidey bits is pretty poor.

Many thanks,

Joe.

Hi everybody,

I suddenly lost the ability to connect to the internet through cable. I think it is related to the security update addressing a vulnerability in kerberus (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3011780). I have no idea what it does, but I'm reasonably sure that it happened just after the update.

The network connection keeps cycling between "identifying" and "network cable unplugged" every 2-3 seconds.

I'm running windows 7 on an older lenovo laptop and I've tried rebooting, system restore, reinstalling the drivers, removing lenovo's connectivity program, uninstalling the security update manually but all to no avail.

A thread with a similar problem led me to try changing the "link speed and duplex" from "auto negotiation" to "10 mbps full duplex" under the advanced tab of the network connection properties, this gives me a network connection but no internet access.

Connecting the cable through the side of the computer changes nothing compared to connection through the docking station.

I can access the internet just fine through wifi.

Any ideas? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Hello, TSG!

Just yesterday I was using the computer normally until I got a Blue Screen. Getting a blue screen is usually something normal that occurs to my every so often, so I didn't mind it and rebooted the computer normally. However, I got two more blue screens within the next hour. The 3rd time rebooting, my computer starts to act strange as if it had a virus. Upon powering up the monitor would just display a black screen with two lines about something --- which I don't remember, sorry --- and stayed like that unless I plugged out the power cord or held on the power button to shut down. Then when after a few tries it boots and displays a message "Floppy Disk Failure" and "Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1" (and the same message for Drives 2 and 3) show up. Also it asks me to continue loading by pressing the F1 Key.

When Windows loads the first time, it displays a message saying a bunch of hardware has just been installed and ready for use. Also, my internal clock resetted itself back to Monday, November 07, 2005 (Which, if I recall, is the date when I got the computer) and my speakers do not work.

TL;DR Version
3 blue screens within a short time
Floppy disk fail
Drivers 1-3 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1-3

Anyway, I browsed through Google but I haven't seen anyone with both problems. I disabled my Floppy Disk Drive and that message doesn't show up anymore, but the others do and my computer still isn't fixed. I ran a vir... Read more

html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Hello,
First let me tell you about my system.   This is an Inspiron
E1705/9400 laptop with the T7400 Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.16
GHZ.   It has 2 GB of RAM and a brand new 500GB Hitachi Travelstar hard
drive (7200 RPM).   It also has the GeForce Go 7900 GS video card.
It previously had Windows XP Professional (32 bit) and worked fine.
But, I have three computers in my home and home office and would like
them all to work better together on my wired home network, so I am
upgrading all three to Windows 7.   My two desktops (one is Dimension
XPS 420 and the other is Dimension XPS 430) seem like they will be no
problem to upgrade to Windows 7.   But, this laptop was not listed on
Dell's Windows 7 Compatibility List.   However, the Windows 7 Upgrade
Advisor that I downloaded and ran seemed to say that it was OK to do a
clean install of 32 bit Windows 7 and it only had a few minor concerns,
where it said to check for updated drivers from the manufacturer.   The
laptop originally came with a 100GB hard drive.   For my use, that is
getting very small, so I decided to get the same exact 7200 RPM drive
in the 500 GB size.   This will allow me to do a clean install of the
32 bit Windows 7 OS on the new hard drive and not have to wipe the old
drive to do it.   I can just hold onto the old HD and stick it back in
whenever I might ... Read more

Frequently I run into situations where the User has an XP disk, it just happens to not be the one that installed XP on their computer.

Recovery Console is sometimes effective in solving problems, however I am wondering if it's necessary to have the "actual" XP disk available in order to use Recovery Console, i.e. Can you run Recovery Console from a Gateway disk on an HP Installation, etc...

(This question includes the unlimited number of XP Disk/Installation variations you can think of.)

First, is there a "legal" issue with suggestion this ? If so, how & why ?

If not, how effective would this be as a technical option ?

I'm thinking this might require some experimentation and anecdotal reports of successes & failures in order to know for sure.

Hello everyone
Recently, I'm playing Anno 1404 (also called Dawn of Discovery) in my Vista Home Basic 32bit finely until I saw the problem with the "save/load" problem. First, it saves "systematically" but, the save is corrupted to a 5kb file. Second, the game can't load the 'properlly saved' save file, and also the corrupted one also.

Few of the players had the similar problem, and someone said that making another user account works, and I tried and really worked for me. Yes, I can play this way, but all of my files and infos are saved in the Administrator account, and I don't want to switch users just to play that game

Recently I found a useful MS program, which is runas, and found how to run as another account. It asks for the account pw, and everythis was fine, but it doesn't run my game
It just closes the cmd and nothing happens. What could be this problem?

What I've done thus far: I've run Spybot and Ad-Aware during a "safemode" session. These found a lot of "threats," which I removed. This did not fix the problem. I then tried to restore my computer to an earlier date, but that failed.

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?

I need help to solve a mystery. I have attempted use of several programs for audio capture of speaker sound. Strangely, all install with no apparent problem. However, when I attempt to use the program, it is immediately stopped by Windows, indicating error. Unfortunately, the error is unspecified, so I have no clue about what to do. I have tried using compatibility mode, disabling UAC, install as administrator, etc.

There was a time in the past when I did use such a program as FreeCorder, Huelix and StepVoice Recorder.

My sound card is built in to the motherboard.

System restoration is of no avail.

I suppose I could use a cable loop, but prefer to use appropriate software.

I will appreciate suggestions.

A:Can't Record "What You Hear"

I would suggest downloading the program Audacity. Then follow the directions at the bottom of the screen, in the last paragraph here.

I figured it out woot! I am excited right now haha.

So the reason I could not get my applications to record using the "what u hear" option is because it was hidden and not set as the default device.

It was so simple too

So for anyone having the same issue.

Open recording devices.
Right click and make sure there is a check next to "Show Disabled Devices"
In the list find "What U Hear" right click it and set it as default.

Record your sounds!

I can't believe I didn't figure this out sooner.

A:Record From "What U Hear"!!!

Good one.

Will make a lot of people happy.

Better put it in "tutorials".

Hello. I am hoping I can get some help with using the "What U Hear" option on my sound card.
I have enabled "What U Hear", and am using Camtasia to record audio. I have set Camtasia to use "What U Hear", but I get no sound recorded when I try and use it. I also notice that the volume bar does not move on "What U Hear" in the sound control panel.

I have disabled all other microphone inputs (I have a USB mini soundcard for my headset/mic when using Ventrilo/Teamspeak, and an onboard soundcard). I have also disabled all other playback devices, leaving just my speaker input enabled.

I have no idea how "What U Hear" works, as I only found out about it recently. do I have to plug anything into my sound card to get it to work? All I have plugged in is my 2.1 speakers in the green line-out socket.

Please help, I want to record what I am listening to, without having to hold a microphone to my speakers/headphones!

A:Cannot Get "What U Hear" Working.

If you have What You Hear enabled (this is what SoundBlaster calls the System Mixer) you should be able to record streaming audio - what you are hearing on the PC's speakers. By "enabled" the System Mixer must be set as the default Recording device in the Control Panel - Hardware and Sound - Sound Panel. If it's not set as the default recording device that could be the problem. The other problem could be the program you are using to record. Download the free Audacity recording program and see if you can get the what you hear recording with Audacity Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder

I'm trying to do two things
1) make Audacity record what plays through my speakers, like a midi for example
2) make my computer play sound files as it it was a microphone, to, for example, play music over a skype call.

I have realtec audio drivers/card/thing, and under XP all I would have to do is mute/unmute stereo mix. When it was muted, sound didn't play like a microphone, and unmuted, my output acted like a mic..

However, now, I can't figure out how to do that. When I run audacity under XP compatibility, it lists stereo mix as an imput device but it doesn't record anything. Also, the realtec program that is listed under control panel isn't the same; there is no mixer panel that lets me control stereo mix..

You might have to experiment to find which fix will work for you, but something in here ought to do it:

I have a Dell pc Dimension C521 running on windows XP.I am trying to record radio from the pc. I believe it's called streaming. I know that many people can record what is playing on the pc straight to audacity or free corder however I find that my recording is limited to line in or microphone.I did try connecting the microphone socket to the line in socket but the pc didn't like it at all. My sound card is a sigmatel codec. I have heard somwhere that Dell has disabled the "record what you hear" facility but that it might be possible to reestablish it by downloading an up to date driver. I have downloaded a zipped sigmatel driver but I now don't know how to go about installing it. I opened it but didn't find any exe. files. Can someone please take me thro' the procedure bearing in mind that I am not too savvy in this department.
PS I haven't visited the site for a while and was a bit disconcerted to find the " find your threads" facility doesn't seem to be around or have I somehow missed it.

About a month ago I did " something " and lost sound on my PC. My computer doesn't recognize it's gone so how can I get it back myself ??

A:Can't hear a "thang"

You don't mention your O/S nor what type of sound card your using.

If it's windows, then first try:

i) Control Panel, sounds. Add sounds to events and see if you can hear them.

ii) Check to see if the audio cable is connected to your CD ROM and the other end is connected to your sound card. Can you hear your CD's?

iii) Right click My Computer", "Properties", "Device Manager" tab, and double click your sound card entry. Check here for any conflicts, and if disabled, then enable it again, then restart.

It seams in windows 7 I can no longer "record what you hear". I boot over to XP and I have this functionality (SoundBlaster Live!) but not in W7. I've searched through the myriad of dialog boxes and settings that I now have to go through, but find nothing. I hope this isn't more of MS's DRM watchdog approach to assuming everyone is a thief. I'm a musician and this really hampers my working environment.

Anyone run across this and any fixes? Any official word from MS?

Hi all,

I have a problem on using IE to visit any web site with return message "The address is not valid" always.

Symptoms:
1. my IE home page is set to "Use blank" which it should display "about:blank" in the address input filed. However, it initial address is now changed to "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=76277" and the content area shows "Internet Explorer cannot be display the webpage."

2. Anyway, here is the major problem. Whatever I type, e.g "www.yahoo.com", "www.google.com", it just return "The address is not valid" in the content area and the address field shows "http:///"

3. I try to search some help on the net and it told me to use the comment:

ipconfig /flushdns

which may help. However, I got the error "The requested operation requires elevation." to run the comment. In fact, I have the administrator privilege.

4. On the other hand, my msn messenger works. i.e. I can use messenger normally. which means my network configuration is fine.

So, it seems that my computer is infected. Could anyone help on this?

I have "Photo Editor" in my "Office" suite. The "Zoom" and "Select" functions do not activate when I drag them from the Tool Bar. I have the installation CD for "Office." Would I be able to find "Photo Editor" on the CD and do a 'repair' reinstallation? Perhaps there is another solution to the problem.

Your response(s) will be appreciated.
