Dell System Diagnostic, or something else?

Q: Dell System Diagnostic, or something else?

Hi,

decided to run a system diagnostic on my Dell PC today - just because it had never been done on this particular PC. Received a msg telling me Microsoft .Net Framework 4 Full would be required in order to install the Dell Diag. We have the lesser version .Net Framework 4 Client Profile. Was about to install the full version over top of Client Profile when it occurred to me that perhaps there was a better System Diagnostic tool out there anyway.

In fact it looks like there are quite a few. So I am here for recommendations. Would prefer not to pay for one if possible but certainly don't want to be cheap since this is our primary PC. Or should I install the Full Version of .Net Framework 4 & stick with the Dell diag?

Perhaps a little more info:

I ran something called Free PC Health Scan on the Dell website which then called into play iolo System Mechanic & it found a number of issues. Two items removed from startup which I already knew about & was going to remove myself when was certain there would be no negative repercussion. But what concerns me:

1) are the over 100 registry entries it flagged - I do run CCleaner several times throughout the week to remove old/left over/invalid registry entries. But apparently iolo found around 104 that need to be removed? & yes I know we're not supposed to muck about with registry but have been letting Norton, McAfee & CCleaner do their thing for a number of years now & to my knowledge have not damaged a registry yet. No longer run Norton or McAfee, have installed only Microsoft Security Essentials & Malwarebytes at this time.

2) Also indicated there may be some data corruption on the HD. It was a bit ambiguous on that point.

This is when I decided to run the diag.

iolo System Mechanic is not free, guess just the PC Health Scan was. Found some Dell threads where users had run System Mechanic on brand new Dell machines & because of all the Dell bloatware System Mechanic found all kinds of problems - on brand spanking new PC's.
Thank you

A: Dell System Diagnostic, or something else?

Dell used to have hardware diagnostics on the hard drive, accessed by F12 at power on? Have they stopped that?

However, all the "repair" programs such as System Mechanic and the one advertised on TV, etc that fix and speed up your PC and remove hundreds of registry entries are very suspect. Most techies compare them to "snake oil".

Ccleaner has a registry scanner program, if you really want to do that. Its the least intrusive.

I am running a Dell OptiPlex 745 with Windows Home Premium with SP1.
Service Tag: 6QRCGC1 | Express Service Code: 14678745265

But I am unable to Run a quick test at Dell.com for common hardware problems. I get a pop up "install Common.dll" to continue.

I do have the Dell System Detect update and that's working fine.

Where can I downlod the Common.dll somewhere safe?  Does it go into System32?  Can I use my installation disk?  If so, please explain how I can accomplish this. I need complete installation details please.

Thanks

Hi,
I ran the Windows XP diagnostics tool and got an error message saying there is no diagnostic utility found...
what does this mean ?

A:Ran Dell Diagnostic Tool

Hello,If it is one thing that I have noticed from working on Dell computers, it is that most of them use the tools provided by Dell a little differently from model to model. Especially if your PC is a few years old. You may need to insert one of the disks that came with your PC, if you have one that is a couple of years old. The newer Dell's don't come with any of the disks unless you beg them, and pay $10.Most of the newer Dell's that have the diagnostics onboard, are generally accessed like this.1. Turn on (or restart) your computer.2. When the DELL? logo appears, press F12 immediately.3. When the boot device list appears, highlight Boot to Utility Partition and press Enter.4. When the Dell Diagnostics Main Menu appears, select the test you want to run.Hope this helps, nos

Dell Latitude D620 2gb ram, bios revision a08

This Sunday my computer was getting stuck on the Dell logo screen with the progress bar at the bottom. The bar advances about one eighth of the way and stops. Sometimes it did not do even go to that screen. Well, I turned in on and off a few times and it finally started and worked the rest of the week.

Today, Friday we are back to where we were on Sunday. Thank goodness I got to back up my files this week. I was able to get logged on today, but then the mouse stopped working. Now, it is again getting stuck on the Dell screen or before.

I tried to boot up after taking out the hd and then after taking out the 1 gig chip that pops out of the bottom. No luck. I tried a different power cord. I have a new battery, but it only takes me about an hour to use it up.

Before I pay someone to tell me to pay some expensive part or a new computer, is there anyone out there who could tell me what's wrong or is there a procedure for figuring out what is wrong so I could buy the part without consulting the expensive expert?

Thanks.

PS I just got it to boot up again normally with cursor working. What can I do to see what is going on?

I reset all of my ram slots, video card and sound cards tonight. I also removed my processor heat sink fan and cleaned it b/c it was full of dust. When I put it all back together my computer turned on fine. I went into bios to check some things and when I saved and exited bios my monitor went black and my processor fan went full blast and the lights 3 and 4 on the front of my tower light up. Now every time I try to start my computer it keeps just doing that. Fan full blast and 3 and 4 lit up. I can't figure out whats wrong.

If anyone can help me with this, you will have my eternal gratitude and love.

Thanks

I believe those were btx type mb. They are very prone to failure and one of the indications of failure is the fan running at full speed.

What was the original problem that caused you to reseat ram, video card, etc?

This morning I turned on my computer and it is making a loud noise but it will not start. The diagnostic lights on the front say 1 3 4. This happened a couple of times before, and I would shut it off, wait a few minutes and turn it back on and everything would work fine. However, this time it did not start at all. I am thinking it might be the processor, but I am not sure? If it is, how would I know what kind of processor it needs? Dell will not tell me unless they troubleshoot and determine what the problem is and then they would send their technician out to fix it (too costly). Help!!

On Dimension desktop with ABCD diagnostic lights (Dim 4700), the lights show G/Y/Y/G green/yellow/yellow/green. The Dell Service Manual and the Owner's Manual neither show this G/Y/Y/G series among the lights shown in the manuals.
One problem is that the POST procedure doesn't complete and it is extremely difficult getting into the F12 Boot Menu for troubleshooting or making changes there. Pressing F2 indicates "Entering Setup" but it doesn't enter Setup, probably because it doesn't finish the POST. Regarding the part on the monitor showing the POST procedure progress, it gets almost to the end and stops there. Whatever that last POST step is, that is probably where the main problem is which we cannot find. Does anyone know the final POST steps and/or what the yellow lights for the B and C indicate.

I have a Dell E521 desktop, which I've had for nine years and one day I suddenly discovered the front power button was flashing an amber light and then over time the power gradually died completely. I then looked online to confirm it was the power supply at fault and so went on ebay and bought a new power supply the exact same as the original.
The problem I have now is that everything powers up fine with a front green power light, but it is now showing green diagnostic lights on the front panel which are clearly 2 & 4. I've looked in the manual and it says, 'a possible graphic-card failure has occurred'. I've tried taking my Radeon HD6450 graphic card out and reinstalled it and I've also tried booting with just the integrated graphics on the motherboard, but the lights remain stuck at 2 & 4 and the computer will not boot up properly. Only the Dell logo screen appears on my monitor and the bar underneath that fills white as it boots is only three quarters of the way white. It's really frustrating to be greeted with yet another problem which I don't think is the graphic card, because how can both go down at the same time?
On the motherboard there is an LED that's showing an amber/orange light, it used to always be green, so what does this orange light mean? Can anyone please help me diagnose what the problem could be and a possible fix. I really like my Dell E521 and really would like to get it up and running again. Hope you can help.... Read more

A:DELL E521 - diagnostic lights stuck at 2 & 4..?

Try clearing BIOS to clear that error:

Power off, unplug
Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
Open case and remove motherboard battery
Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
Make sure RAM modules, video card and other PCI cards are correctly seated in their slots
Reinstall the battery - use a fresh one since the old one may be weak/dead. CR2032 3-volt lithium ion battery
Close case and reboot

We have a Dell OptiPlex 745 desktop system which will often fail to boot after a restart.  The diagnostic lights show a 1-2-3 pattern which has no definitive solution in the manual.  Pressing the power button shuts down the system immediately after this particular boot failure.  Pressing the power button from an power off condition always results in a successful boot.  This problem only occurs after a Windows restart and then not with every restart but intermittently.

Hi Guys,

Let me start by warning you that I am not a whiz when it comes to computers!

My Dell Dimension 4600 has been getting a little cantankerous of late, to the point where it failed to boot up today (I'm on the laptop!).

I've looked for solutions, and the end result after getting a "blue screen" with an "Unmountable Boot Volume" message is the following:

IDE Hard Drive Diagnostics
Primary SATA
Drive 0: No device
Secondary SATA
Drive 0: No device

Primary IDE
Drive 0: WDC WD600BB-75CAAO - Fail. Return Code: 7
Drive 1: Maxtor 6E040l0 - Pass

etc...

Is this the dreaded hard drive crash?

Any advice gratefully received!

A:Dell IDE Hard Drive Diagnostic: Fail!

It is either a dead hard drive or the motherboard has stopped talking to it. My bet would be the drive, given the symptoms.

A:Dell ePSA Diagnostic Beep driving me crazy

It should not be running at every boot. Did you initiate it? Explain what you did or what problems you had or are having. For starters, check your Startup programs by right clicking on the taskbar and selecting Task Manager. Expand the Details and look at the Startup tab. Disable anything that looks like it might be causing this. You can always re enable if necessary.
Another place to check is msconfig. Open the Run box and type msconfig to make sure diagnostics startup is not selected.

My XPS One 2710 has stopped turning on and attempting to boot.  I've looked through support/forums for info on this, but nothing matches my symptoms:
- press power button...  fans start, the power button illuminates white and a small LED indicator above it also illuminates in white...  5-7 seconds go by...
- the screen is illuminated, but is black.  No Dell logo appears.
- then the screen illumination turns off (darker black) and the white LED above the power button turns off.  The power button maintains its white illumination but the LED indicator turns off.  Fans keep spinning.
- pressing F12 to get the system diagnostics during this process does nothing.

I can't seem to get any text/BIOS/UEFI or anything to appear on the screen.  Anyone know what the source of this kind of problem is or what other indicator I should look for?   Is it likely I need to ship this back to Dell for repair?

thx

A:XPS One 2710 - Can't get Dell logo or any boot/diagnostic info. Help?

Did you install Win 10 on this XPS 2710?
Dell hasn't tested this model for compatibility with Win 10. And if you search these forums, there are many posts about a "black screen of death" that Win 10 may cause on the XPS 2710.
There aren't many reliable fixes, aside from a new motherboard, for this problem, and quickly reverting to whichever version of Windows was installed prior to Win 10. But XPS 2710 motherboards are expensive and hard to come by...
And other fixes that seem to work for one user don't always work for other users.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5150. The other day, it went into standby after idling while on the battery. Since then the far right diagnostic light (battery charge status) has been flashing three quick orange and one long green. The computer runs fine off of AC power and battery power, and the battery is fully charged. Has anyone ever seen this before or know what it means? Even though it seems to be working, I don't want to risk anything going wrong. Any recommendations? Thanks!

A:Solved: Dell Inspiron 5150 Diagnostic Light Problem

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron 5150. About 2 years ago the exact thing happened with the light. I spent a lot of time on the phone with Dell tech support. We checked all kinds of things (I can't remember exactly what now as it has been 2 years), but eventually they said that they didn't know what was causing the probem and that I'd have to live with it. The light still blinks exactly the same to this day although the laptop has always seemed to work just fine all along.

Hello -
I hope Bev is still around as she has been so helpful to me in the past.  I have and 8400 that shut off while I was working.  I thought the power to the house went out...but it was just my computer.  Blinking amber light on the power button, no diagnostic lights in back.  Tried to start up, nothing.  Read posts here about it and tried removing CMOS for 10 minutes, removing PCI cards and disconnecting all power and connections from drives to MB (no change...still blinking light, nothing else), then did the jumping test from green to black (yes, I probably should have done that first...) and got nothing on that.  No fan, nothing.
Can I definitely say it is the PSU?  If so, is the PSU from a 2400 interchangeable with this one?  If it isn't, are there particular brands I should look for or stay away from when purchasing a new PSU?

Thanks so much!

Blinking Amber means Bad Power Supply.
This particular model needs tin snips to cut a hole in the back for a regular power supply.  If you buy the startech model it will fit without requiring case modification.
Or you can buy one from an OEM vendor.

I bought this a couple of years ago from a local computer store. It's been very reliable and I run Ubuntu 16.04 Linux on it. This afternoon I had a power drop of a second or so and since then when trying to boot the issue in the subject happens. I can get to boot as usual by pressing the power supply test button which gives me a green light on the power supply and then pressing the power button will let it boot normally. I don't have any version of Windows installed so it's not possible to run any diagnostic unless there are some Linux based ones.
Thanks for any help

A:Dell Optiplex 780 MiniTower, power light flashes amber diagnostic lights 1 & 3 flash

Blinking Amber power: Initial state of light at power up. Indicates system has power, but the POWER_GOOD signal is not yet active. If the Hard Drive light is off, it is probable that the power supply needs to be replaced. If the Hard Drive light on, it is probable that an onboard regulator or VRM has failed. Look at the diagnostic lights for further information.
1+3:  Memory modules are detected, but a memory configuration or compatibility error has occurred.
You could try resetting BIOS to see if you can clear the error.

Reboot and press F2 to open BIOS setup
Copy down all current BIOS settings
Power off, unplug
Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
Open case and remove motherboard battery
Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
Reseat RAM modules in their slots
Reinstall battery- good time for new CR2032 coin cell, if this one is old
Close case and reboot

If that helps, go back into BIOS setup, and confirm that all settings match what you wrote down. Be sure to save any changes before exiting setup.

Is there a way to gauge a PC system's gaming ability?

Since video cards and add-on programs (Direct X, etc) are so fundamental to game play, if would be nice to have a utility that would give a yes or no on the question "Will this game work on my computer?"

Bottom line is I don't know if my PC is 3D, GL rendering or what anymore since video card evolution is non-stop. A utility program to scan the computer's capability would help.

What specific errors are you seen in the diagnostic report?

Regarding Event Viewer:

If I spent 10 minutes investigating each different error found in Event Viewer, I would never have time to eat or sleep. If you can't or won't ignore most of them, you are destined to have a full time job, working for EV.

I look at it maybe once a year and would never look there if my system was running well.

I ran the System Diagnostics Report that is generated in Computer Management under Performance--Data Collector Sets--System?System Diagnostics. Here is a screenshot summary of the results (the full System Diagnostic Report is 123 pages long).

My system appears to be running fairly smoothly so I was surprised by these results. No other programs were running during the test. The UEFI diagnostic shows no hardware problems and I doubt that all of the poor results are valid.

Someone at Microsoft said that incompatibility issue(s) might cause these results. However, they would give me no further insights and said I would have to pay to have them figure it out. In another forum, I was told that the results are just Windows internal reporting and to ignore them. However, this makes no sense.

There are two Abnormally Stopped System Services: Interactive Services Detection (UIODetect) and Windows Encryption Provider Host Service (WEPHOSTSVC). What should be the settings for these services?

Question: How can I determine what, if anything, is conflicting with the diagnostic test?

Question: Could the problem be a flaw in the diagnostics test itself, rather than any problems with my system?

Question: If there really are some issues, how can they be resolved?

I hope that someone can help me understand what to do with these results. I would be happy to share the full diagnostics report as well as the associated system performance report.

hey, a friend reccomended me this website after he tried to help me get rid of this problem himself, but everything he tried hasn't gotten rid of the issues.

last night i was on my machine (windows xp) and it threw a few warning boxes up, then it shut down. i turned it back on and all the icons on my desktop were gone, and one of those fake virus scanners started running, calling itself system diagnostic. it's also hidden everything in my program files (except if i download something new)

so i've tried all the usual fixes (according to friend) which was running rkill, then malware bytes and super anti spyware. both find errors and apparently remove them, but on system restart the problem still occurs. also when these programs say the virus is gone, the desktop icons and program files are still gone. something which i read will return after this virus is deleted.

Hi,

I have a Toshiba a200 Satellite laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit (which I recently installed as a fresh install to try and solve my problems). I have several problems, and I'm not sure if they are related or seperate to each other. Here they are:

Often, when I am away from the computer, even if it's only for a few minutes, when I come back it is frozen -- the screen looks normal, but the mouse won't move and the system won't respond to Ctrl + Alt + Delete. I have to hold down the power button until it goes black, and then reboot.
Often when I reboot, and almost always when I boot up for the first time of a morning, the computer fails to start -- it will get to a black screen and freeze forever, or it will freeze on the "Windows is Starting Up" screen, and I will have to hold down the power button again to shut it off. It will usually start after the second or third time.
Sometimes, firefox (and sometimes other programs too) stops responding for about 30 seconds, and then comes back fine. It's not that bad, but it seems a bit odd. This is just a minor annoyance -- the other two problems are more worrying.
I've attached a zipped folder containing the reports from the SF Diagnostic Tool.

I hope someone can help me. I'd be really grateful.

Thanks,

Matt

it says that the error fixes itself when i restart my comp which i did a few times. i am puzzled at why this is showing up and worried it might fry my computer. my desktop gave me a black screen saying drive failure was imminent and my laptop is all i have left, and can not afford another one. so please tell me how i can solve this problem if i can. thank you!

A:norton 360 operating system diagnostic puzzle

Norton 360 is anti-virus/security software and your question has nothing to do with that, so why is that in the title? Am I missing something?

Hard Drive Failure is imminent message is usually from SMART and frequently it is correct meaning that the hardware of the hard drive is failing (not the software). That might also explain chronic hard drive errors that are "fixed" and then reoccur at reboot.

If the desktop only boots to black screen then how did you get the text of the error message (above)?

What happens when you turn the desktop on?

Is the laptop also broke? If so, start a separate thread for that, otherwise things will get VERY confusing.

Hello all. I'm currently talking to you from Safe Mode in Windows 7 32 bit.

I've been running Windows 7 for quite some time now and I haven't run across any hiccups like with the previous versions of Windows... until now.
I recently bought a copy of Star Craft 2 from Gamestop. Doing this allows you to be in the beta program... so I figured "Oh, good stuff".

I tried to patch the program and I received an error during the patch process. To make a long story short, Blizzard informed me that I should run the Windows 7 memory diagnostic tool to make sure that my RAM wasn't at fault, using the extended test. I figured "Ok, no problem".

I ran the tool, selected "Save work and restart the system".

The tool loads up and starts to run with 1 pass with a "basic" check. I realized after about 10 minutes into the check that I could hit F10 and change the options. I hit F10, changed the test to Extended and hit continue. The screen refreshed VERY slowly with the updated changes, except the progress went from 10% complete to look like "_%" for every spot that could have a % at it.

I thought that was odd, so I hit the Exit button.

The system rebooted.

The system started to hang at the BIOS POST screen a little longer that it usually does... normally it only stays there about 2-3 seconds... it now stays there for around 10-15 seconds.

The Windows 7 logo starts to load and then freezes half way through loading graphic. The system han... Read more

I started experiencing issues on my computer today.  The first thing I noticed was that my power system tray icon was missing.  I looked to make sure that it was set to display and despite checking that was set to display, the icon was missing.  At this time, I was at a hotel and wasn't attempting to connect to the internet.

When I got home this evening, my computer would not load a web page despite the fact that my connection icon stated that I was connected to my home wireless connection.  I troubleshot the problem and it states that "The Diagnostics Policy Service is not running." I performed a google search of how to start the policy service and it appears to be enabled.  At this point, I ran a system restore.  The system restore brought back my power system icon, but did not resolve the connectivity issue.

Please help.  Also, just to save time - if I need to restart my computer in safe mode will you please explain how.  I attempted to do it and couldn't figure out how to get it to work in Windows 8.  I'd heard it was difficult and confirmed it tonight.  Thank you in advance for any advice.

After running the System Health Report from here;

System Health Report

......at the System Diagnostic Report, I get a warning advising that the scan failed to detect running anti-virus, anti-spyware etc. protection, here -

......and yet at Start>Control Panel>Security Centre, all protection requirements are shown as up and running, here -

......is there any way that I can get the scan to recognise the Security protection setup, and so include it in the System Diagnostic Report?

I've had no problems with viruses, malware or spyware. This is purely an administrative issue to try and get the System Diagnostic Report to give a true account of the system.

A:System Health [Diagnostic] Report doesn't recognise avast! anti-virus, as installed.

Same here. If it doesn't recognise Norton 360 I think its a glitch. If security centre is satisfied then all is fine, otherwise it would be complaining.

I bought a new Dell i3847 and it has Windows 7 Pro 64bit factory installed on it.
I wanted to do a full system backup, but the Dell Backup and Recovery software will not allow me to do a system backup.  Further, I have been unable to create a system recovery disk using Dell Backup and Recovery.
I can't use the Dell provided system disk for recovery because it is clearly marked Windows 8.1

1) Why is a Win 8.1 disk included with a Win 7 Pro 64bit system?
2) What is wrong with Dell Backup and Recovery that it:
a) can't create a factory recovery disk
b) won't allow me to create a system back up so I can return it to the factory state

Help!

It's been 2.5 hours and it is still "initializing disk" to create a factory recovery.  It usually fails somewhere during initialization or writing.    Spending hours for each failed attempt to create a factory recovery disk is NOT GOOD!

Hi there. I bought a Dell Inspiron 17R-5720 back in September 2012, and have been having this issue pretty much since I bought it from Amazon. The computer is running Windows 7 64 Bit, 6 GB RAM, Intel Core i5-3210M @ 2.50 GHz. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed and run scans regularly.

Pretty much what happens is that the screen will turn to colored static, and the computer will be unresponsive. In order to make the machine usable again the power button must be held down and the computer restarted. The odd thing about it is that it almost always happens when I am in the process of moving the laptop from one place to another. For example moving the computer from my lap to the table next to me. It has happened once or twice when I just touched the computer while it was on the table next to me. A few times the screen just turned black.

Since it is still under warranty, I called Dell support and they sent out a technician, who didn't seem to do any sort of troubleshooting. He replaced the motherboard and the LCD display. This of course did not fix the problem, so I called Dell again. This time, they had me send the computer to them. They received and sent it out the very same day, again, it doesn't seem that they did any real troubleshooting. When the same malfunction cropped up again, I of course called Dell and they said that when they received the laptop there was some sort of cable inside that was "loose", so the connected this cable and sen... A:Dell Laptop, Display Turns to Static/System Freezes, Dell Can't Fix

The technician Dell sent came to my house today. He replaced the motherboard (again), the LCD screen (again), and the hard drive. Fast forward five hours later, and guess what? The problem still hasn't been fixed. I just got off the phone with Dell support, of course their first suggestion was to send the computer in again and have them "fix" it. It took about an hour of going back and forth being on hold/arguing before they finally said they would "elevate" my case and and have someone call me on Monday to discuss it. I think I've given them plenty of chances to solve this, now I just want a replacement computer. Though with their track record, I'm not holding my breath. I'm even doubting that I'll get a phone call.

Does anyone think that this is power supply related? Not the power cord itself (I've used two different cords), but whatever is inside that powers the system. Sorry, I'm not that computer savvy.

I have a nasty nasty infection on my pc. I've tried several things to remove it myself and I can see that the forum for HJT logs and malware removal is swamped here...

So, I'm considering a reformat. My Dell Dimension came with a utility called the DSR--Dell System Restore. It's a hidden partition users can go to to easily set the OS (Windows XP in my case) to it's original "from the factory" state.

I haven't been saving a lot of my files to disc the way I should have been. And now this infection has disable most of my operating system's peripherals--I can't burn cd/dvd, can't print, I don't even have audio right now. I'm in Safe Mode With Networking because it's the only way I can get onto the net.

I've read a few good turtorials about using the DSR but, none of them mention whether I can just re-install my snapshot to my main drive (C and leave some files I backed up to D: or, if all my disc will be wiped clean--including the files I moved to D: ?

Does anyone know anything about this? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

A:Dell inspiron - Dell recovery system

Did you buy your Dell New?The recovery system is usually part of a Dell computer. It enables you to recover your operating system in the event of a crash. What does android have to do with your issue? Unless there is a specific page that tells you there will be a charge,I wouldn't think so ,unless they are wanting you to upload to the "Cloud". Can you be more specific?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

If you have access to another computer I'd suggest you create a system repaiir disc.

System Repair Disc - Create

It won't re-install Windows, but it will get you into the advanced recovery environment, from where you can run chkdsk.

It does seem highly likely there is a major problem with your hard drive.

I just saw the new Client System Update utility for my E6500, downloaded, and installed it on Win7 x64. I've been talking about Dell creating such a util for years and finally Dell did.

However, it does not work. After I press the Check for updates button, after a bit it comes back with "Check for updates failed" and the GUI-U15 error in the logs. I tried many times, including after a reboot. Also, the app just disappears (probably crashes silently) when I go to Advanced->system details.

Any ideas? I was excited to spread the word around about it but can't as it doesn't work at all.

I just had to reinstall the OS on this system because something went wrong. After the clean install, everything was working fine until it got time to install the Dell System Software (found here: Drivers & Downloads )

When I installed this and rebooted, the "Starting Windows" screen took a little longer than usual. Then there was a blue screen for half a second and then the system restarted. I was able to revert using startup repair to a previous restore point. Do I really need the system software that much, and if so, how do I go about fixing this problem?

Hello,
I'm about to order a system fan for my old Dell since the old one died. I've searched around and the best place I can find to buy from is: Used-Pcs.com
Problem is, there's a slight difference with the part number. I'm not sure if it matters, but on the dead fan's casing it has "DC 12V 0.50A". On the site it says "DC 12V 0.5A". So, are they the same thing? Excuse me if this is a stupid question, but I'd rather not order it to find out it's the wrong fan, since I'm really short on money. Thanks in advance.

HELP WANTED Insights -DELL vs. my old Pentium III System

I'm in a bit of a dilemma right now...I was having some problems with my old system which is a:
-Pentium III 800 MHz
-Memory: 256MB
-Windows XP Pro
-ATI Rage 128 GL AGP graphics card

and in the mean time had to order a Dell:

-Dimension E310 Series, Intel Pentium 4 Processor 521 (2.80GHz) and 1MB cache
-1GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
-Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelator 900

but I now got my old system up and running and I'm wondering if I should just upgrade the RAM to 512MB (old Rambus style), update my video card and send the DELL back for a refund????...., although the bus speed is only 100 on the Rambus...and in the meantime, save up for a better system..

I had to kinda jump into something because my wife needs the home computer for school/work daily and I was in need of something quick and inexpensive (paid ~$550 w/ 19 analog flat screen, 80GB HD)

I don't do too much intense gaming, mostly mess with movies/music although I did just pick up Half-Life 2 Episode 1 and I'm pretty sure my old ATI Rage 128 GL AGP graphics card isn't going to cut it and I'm wondering about the Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelator 900 that comes with the Dell..

any thoughts/ insights into this issue???

any intergrated gfx are jsut crap and will not run most new games and if they do they will probibly be laggy, im not to sure on the rage but if its agp you can upgrade for under 100 dollors to play half life 2 on a decent setting, about the rambus it can be quite expensive to upgrade over 60 bucks per 256mb or more so i would look on ebay for it as many reatilas tdo not sell it any more, you can build yourself a decent system for about 700 dollors so i vote to save your $$ and build a completly new system

I have a Dell Optiplex with Win XP Pro pre-installed. Due to virus I need to restore the operating system. Problem is, I don't have the Restore Discs.

Anyways, I tried installing off an XP Pro disk I have (retail) but it will not accept my key as printed on the case.

I contacted Dell who told me that the Win-Key is stored on the mobo and that I must have their CD to restore. Problem is, their quoted me $86 and 3 weeks for delivery.

Here's my question, I remember that they had an "XP Pro restore disc" + another "Drivers" disc. Are the "XP Pro restore discs" generic (for all Dell systems)? My friend has a Vostro with XP Pro and I can probably borrow his and download the system specific drivers...

Will that work?

Thanks.

I have tried 2 identical pieces of Dell 256MB PC133 RAM in my system (Biostar M7VKG and Athlon 1.33). Both pieces cause WinXP to give blue screen error messages almost immediately on start up. Some Kingston PC133 seems to work fine in the same system. Could I have 2 bad pieces or RAM or is it possible for there to be some type of incompatibility? Thanks.

A:Can (Dell) RAM be incompatiable with my system?

if u have another pc laying around that u know works take the ram out of it and put the dell ram in and see if it works. if it does then obviously the ram is fine and its an incompatibility issue. proprietary parts such as dell ram or compaq motherboards etc. sometimes conflicts with parts that arent designed by that manufacturer or for that manufacturer

Hi all,

While trying to run chkdsk on my Dell Windows XP Home Edition (Svc Pack 2) computer it won't run and I get the following error message: 'The application or DLL c:\WINDOWS\system32\ulib.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.' Would someone be so kind as to give me a hint on what to do to get chkdsk to run? Or at least how to check this against the installation diskette and make it right (Actually I only have a Windows XP reinstallation CD). I have had a few bad volumes/sectors before that chkdsk (when it ran previously) was able to fix.

Thanks for any help that someone may be able to give, Mark

A:chkdsk won't run on my Dell XP system

Hi Mark, welcome to TSF....

It may be an idea to pop your XP installation disc in the drive the click Start -> Run -> type:
sfc /scannow
Click OK

If the ulib.dll file is damaged or corrupt, it should copy across a fresh copy from the install disc.

Have you got any details on the dll file...as in size/version??

Hope that helps :)

Hello all,

This is my first post. I have a Dell XPS 400 system and I want to upgrade it so it is faster for gaming. However, I wonder if I'm wasting my money and should start over with a new computer. If I was to upgrade something on my current computer I would think the graphics card would be the first to upgrade. Although my processor isn't a dual one like most are now and that could prob use an upgrade, which in turn might mean upgrading my motherboard, which also may need a bigger power supply and different type of RAM......which is why I'm writing for a recommendation. I can't throw a lot of money into this, but I definitely don't want to put money into something that won't help me and end up replacing anyhow.

My specs are listed below, and you assistance is much appreciated!

Thanks!

In the log file

I have a Dell Dimension 4500 that has the typical "lights on - nobody is home" syndrome; it will not power up when the power switch is depressed. The power switch LED is green/amber. I checked with the computer manual that only states to check all internal connections, which I have, or otherwise call tech support. Since warranty is expired, Dell wants $$$. I tested the power supply unit out of the system - tested good. Removed PCI devices one at a time, but to no avail - no luck. No changes in HW occurred at the time of problem.

Is there another way I can get this puppy to power up? Anyone with similar problems or alternative tests - please advise.

Thanks and hope to hear responses.

I use Windows XP on a Dell laptop and about once a week this DadTray operating system thing pops up and really slows down my computer, I have read some things about it and Dell says it is standard protocol because it provides text enhancement or something. So I would love to delete this but I am not sure how or if I should. Any feedback would be great!

If you just do a google search for DADTRAY.EXE a bunch of web pages will pop up giving you information on. Most say not to diable it unless it's suspected of causing problems, so I don't know if that applies to you or not. Your best bet is to google and do some research on it.

GTA IV on PC does lag noticeably on most computers. I have not found a way to completely fix it yet. I do believe it has more to do with a Hard Drive bottleneck then anything else - unless you are running a SSD?

One way you can make it a bit better is by turning the rendering distance down in the graphics settings (so it doesn't try to draw the scenery that is ages away).

If you can run other demanding games fine on high-res/high-detail then I would not worry about it.

I've been working on a Dell system and have gotten rid of several games, programs described as spyware or adware when I googled them and that's about all. Now, however, the system simply won't boot up. It just keeps looping after the Dell screen comes up. I tried booting from a boot disk from drive A: but can't even get in that way. Does anyone have any ideas what I might have done and—moreover—how to get in to the darn thing so I can fix it? Appreciation to anyone who can help.

Hi all;

I know this question gets asked a lot (yes I have searched the forums), however none of the previous posts have been particularly relevant to me. This is my first post, so here we go:

I recently won a competition where the prize was Windows 7 Ultimate (full, not upgrade, version). I also just bought a new Dell Studio XPS desktop (please see the specs. in my profile... if you can) which came pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) (OEM version with no disc, of course). My question is this:

I want to (clean) install Windows Ultimate onto the new Dell PC. Will I run into any problems in doing this? I basically also want to get rid of all the Dell crap and 3rd party software that came with the computer, and set it up the way I want it. I have heard that Win 7 will install all my drivers automatically, so would I be right in saying that I do not need the Dell "drivers and utilities" disc that came with the system?

The internet is littered with people bitching about how their Dell keeps screwing up or how Windows isn't compatible with this or that, and I'd like to try and avoid becoming one of those people. Basically, I'm just wanting to know if there are any issues in straying from the Dell OEM operating system, and installing my own full retail version of Win 7.

Any and all help will be appreciated.
Also, I am not really a "tech savvy" guy, so simple terms would be great.

Cheers,
Kraney.

Guys,

I have a new computer from Dell, registered with Dell through their on-line process. The problem is that when I log out from the site it is showing my old PC that I no longer have. How do I remove that old PC from my profile and say to Dell, "Hey, I want the site to remember my new model?" This is through the "Drivers and Downloads" section of their website.

It seems like I may have to wait till I need to download a driver and than it will remember my current model. It detects my new service tag automatically, but it does not hold.

Hello.
I have a Dell Dimension E530 that came with XP Home installed. They provided me with re-install and drivers disks.
I don't believe it's compatible with Windows 7 (although I could be wrong even though I checked with the Win7 upgrade utility) and would therefore like to upgrade to XP Pro. I just replaced the harddrive and re-installed XP Home, but I want the fuller features of XP Pro with out all the other Dell software that is usually "included".
I would think that installing XP Pro and grabbing the needed drivers off my disk or the 'net should work sufficiently. But I wonder whether Dell's hardware configurations are "proprietary" to an OS that has been configured by Dell.
Am I way out in left field here?!?
Any guidance is appreciated.
Thank you.
Thom

But I wonder whether Dell's hardware configurations are "proprietary" to an OS that has been configured by Dell.Nope. You can proceed as intended. The latest drivers can easily be sourced from the Dell Support site.As far as Win XP drivers are concerned, the only variation would be with the 32bit and 64bit releases.

ok, so I have a Dell Dimension 8250, 2.4Mhz P4, with the standard 128Mb RDRAM. it takes PC1066, 533 Mhz RDRAM. I want to upgrade my RAM, and I am getting conflicting information from several different sources that say I either *must* or *do not have to* purchase RDRAM for my computer through Dell. I would just go through Dell for it, but they want around 350 bucks or something for 2 sticks of 256Mb RDRAM. other sites sell it for as little as around 150 bucks for a pair. I might as well buy a new computer if it's going to cost over 300 bucks for 512 Mb of RAM. Dell's tech support is worthless. within the same conversation, with 2 different people, the tech support guys told me I HAVE to go through Dell, and then later in the conversation they said that I could buy from another vendor, and the only difference would be that if anything went wrong with the computer or memory, they wouldn't help me. can someone please help me with this?

Actually, that's not quite true.  Sometimes, it shuts down properly... and sometimes, it hangs.  Everything appears to shut down normally; programs close, logs off, shuts down, monitor loses signal... and then the computer just sits there humming, all night if I let it (the front power button/light remains on).

I usually force power down with the button on the front (held for 5 seconds), but I hate doing that every single day.

I thought it might be due to certain peripherals plugged in, but it doesn't seem to be because even with or without these, I cannot predict what it'll do, and >90% of the time it will not shut down all the way.

Any quick n' easy fixes?  It's a newish system, bought back in January.  No updates waiting to install - that I can see - or anything weird going on that would prevent a complete shutdown.    And as I said, it gets almost all the way there, just needs a bit of help to get all the way off.  :-(

Any help much appreciated!

A:Win 7 (Dell) System won't power down at Shutdown

Better scan your whole computer and go to control panel> default program and manage or change the actual setting means from there we can change our setting as our requirements. If not than check the boot system of the computer.

I wen to the Dell website to update my drivers and it asked my to install Dell System Detect - so I downloaded and installed it.  When I went to the start menu to run it I noticed that  I had two instances; one of them had a '1' at the end of its name.  I hopped over to 'Programs and Features' to see what was going on and I found two instances installed on my machine.  The second one was there with the '1' after the name.

I had a bunch of slowdown and glitch problems recently, I've had glitchy problems with Dell software since the beginning, it's changed over time as Dell updates its own software automatically, including freezes and crashes (not to mention the root cert vulnerability a while back), so I just uninstalled as much as I could, and the problems mostly went away, but now I've noticed the Sleep option is gone from power options, I can only shut down and hibernate now.
(Screenshot at bottom of post)
I went in to Dell support to see what I needed to install again, and it guided me to the Dell System Detect download launcher, which now crashes. I tried uninstalling all of the remaining Dell software (Data Protection, Power Manager (which had no Hibernate/Sleep options anyways), but not Touchpad), and it says DDP needs other things uninstalled first...
I just need a normal Windows 7 experience, I want the absolute base minimum Dell software necessary to have that experience without all the Dell bugs and problems... what do I do now?

I have an XPS 8100 I just got two months ago. It has had problems with crashing from day one. I have been on the phone with the wonderful customer service of Dell, located somewhere in India, several times. I say wonderful very sarcastically.

First they sent me a new graphics card that has not helped. Then they told me it has to be software or OS related. So, I reinstalled from my OS and started installing programs slowly one by one. Then I installed Firefox... everything is fine.... World of Warcraft... everthing is fine.... itunes... BAM the crashes come back. I am not sure what is causing my BSODs, which to me are more like SNAP, black screen, reboot, request safe mode screen. It seems to happen any time completely randomly, no overheating, fans going crazy just a silent blackout, and then restarting.

Can someone please help me out, I will attempt to attach my dump file.

Trying to restore an old Dell System 210 286 machine and I am having a real tough time finding the EMS or expanded memory driver for this machine.  Looking on the old support pages there is a reference detail to the Expanded memory driver and the switches.  They say the driver is MM.SYS  Does anyone that works for dell or has access to some archived files might have this driver file.  I know its 25 years later, but it would be an awesome testament to get this 286 working again 100 percent like it did.  This is about the last step to having the system back up and running like it would be back in 1991.

Hello,

- I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place; I hope so

My problem is

* I have a DELL Dimension 3100 (purchased in 2006).

* My Windows XP Home crashed (seemingly because of malware)

* I've installed another Windows - parallely - on my second HDD. It's only temporary solution: what I'm going to do is move all my data from C: and re-install Windows on my primary HDD

* I heard that Dell computers (including desktops) provide the "System Restore" option - restoring the operating system to the out-of-the-box state, from hidden partition.

* It doesn't seem to work though: I'm pressing Ctrl+F11 (I tried F11 as well) when the computer is booting up, but it doesn't do anything.

* I haven't found any "recovery disc", nor a Windows disc among the CDs I have got.
I'm not sure if the computer was shipped with anything of that sort (I can't remember), I have to assume it wasn't.

* I know that I can, and perhaps I should contact the Dell support, but I hoped I could get a quick answer here...

My questions, precisely, are:

1. How can I check whether I have this hidden "system recovery" partition at all?
(I've certainly never removed it, since until now I haven't even known such a thing may exist).

2. Do I need any CD to perform this System Recovery?

Thanks in advance for any help

A:Dell T1700 MT system fan speed

The system is at least 3 years old. The first thing I would do is open the case cover and blow the dust off/out of all the fans and the entire chassis. Then retest. If still too loud, consider replacing it WC236.

i just installed dell NSS on my laptop.. and it says it's supposed to manage USB drives and such, but i can't access it.. i'm probably being stupid asking this, but does it just run in the background and monitor, or can i actually use it?
thanks

A:what's dell notebook system software (NSS)?

From what I've read on the net, Dell Nss is not an application, it provides driver support for USB devices. You can't interact with it, it just runs in the background like any other driver.

My mom has a 6-year-old dell desktop and she wants to completely start over. She doesn't have the restart disk and I was wondering if there was a way to burn a disk on my computer that resets hers. She does have a disk with the drivers on it but I think i need a windows xp boot disk plus some kind of disk that deletes everything.

A:system reboot/restore (dell with xp)

No, you will need a Windows installation disk and a valid license (product key).

What make/model? It may have come with a recovery partition with the Windows installation files on it.

There is no XP "boot disk". The XP CD boots itself for the installation. But only a Dell licensed version will work with the Dell product key on the sticker on the machine. Do you see that key?

From time to time, I use iOBit uninstaller to check existing programs, and sometimes find ones I've never seen before. This morning, it was Dell System Detect. I did some research and found out what it is, what it does and that it is a vulnerable program, so I wanted to uninstall it.
When iOBit does the second scan, it comes up with a lot of leftover appdata files and a warning comes up that says:
Warning! Multiple programs detected in the current directory. Please be careful when selecting items to delete.
The files are all under this directory, and there are approximate 60 of them.
C:\Users/MyName\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0\DPH8J4AT.54N\6DK4VGY9.TZJ\DELL..TION_E30847F5D4A30E93_0006.0006_E3E278AC9F13D46\(Hope I got all that right)Is it safe to delete these files the regular uninstaller left behind?

A:Uninstalling Dell System Detect

Hi DSA2591,
What is the exact system model? What is the current OS installed on the system?
The files in the local appdata folder are all temporary files stored by the programs / applications that are  installed on the system. So, yes it is safe to delete these files, however, I would suggest you to create a system restore point, such that in any case, if there is an issue with the system, you could always restore the machine back to its functional point.

Having said this, the Dell System Detect is a Dell application to detect the system details and check for any required updates on the system. So, it is your discretion whether or not you would want to remove this from your system.

Dell Dimension Desktop 8400 Windows XP Pro

I received a message a day or so ago alerting me that my System Battery Voltage was low. I then read a couple of forums at Dell with people saying that it, for them, was their Belkin Surge Protector (I use one with my computer). I want to find out if my System Battery actually does need replacing or not, but don't know how to see my battery's charge. It's nearly 2 years old and I don't think it would need one by now

How can I find what my system battery charge is so I can determine whether or not I actually need to replace it??

A:Dell Dimension System Battery??

It is probably referring to the button-cell battery (usually a CR2032) on the motherboard that is responisble for keeping the CMOS memory. This battery is important for keeping the bios settings and system clock correct. You can buy a replacement at any Radio Shack and most computer shops. These batteries usually run about $3.

I left my laptop on and unattended for a while and when I came back into the room my cat was sleeping on the keyboard. I moved her off and my keyboard was not responding. I had to force a shut down (held down the power key) and restarted the computer. Everything was fine, except my computer was running really slow. So, I shut down the computer via Ctrl + Alt + Del and restarted. This time, however, the computer was very slow to restart and before the Windows logo screen appeared I got an error message:

Code:
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM
Operating System not found
Dell tech support said that I had a missing or corrupt File Allocation Table. They suggested I reinstall my operating system but there was a good chance I would lose my files on the computer.

So, I tried recovering my files using Knoppix Linux Boot CD but it would not recognize the hard drive.

I pulled the hard drive and put it in an external dock and it would recognize the hard drive but I could not access it. Additionally, the hard drive was not showing up correctly. It is a 640 GB drive but it was only showing up as a 600 GB drive.

The hard drive is now back in the lap top and it is still showing Operating System Not Found. The drive is showing up in BIOS Setup Utility. I just tried Hiren's Boot CD using their Mini Windows XP option but I kept getting the automatic shut down "Blue Screen of Death."

Unfortunately there are files on this driv... Read more

Have you tried a Windows "Repair". You boot with the Windows disc but instead of install you select "Repair". This should fix any hard drive MBR or whatever problems, along with any missing OS files. You won't lose any user data although you may have to reinstall any XP SP's and possibly some software

There is also the Windows XP Recovery Console option. One of these two should get you going.

If you don't have a Dell OS disc and are in the US, you can request one from Dell
